Irene Doty is proud of her Ukrainian ancestry

By Gord Paulley With developments in Ukraine changing minute by minute, it was timely to meet with Irene Doty, who is extremely proud of her Ukrainian heritage.

Doty and her husband Jack live on the century farm 10 kilometres south of Carlyle on Highway 9. They have three children and four grandchildren.

Her parents emigrated from the Ukraine to Fort Frances, Ont. Her father came to Canada in 1912 and started working for the Canadian National Railway. Her mother arrived in 1922. They eventually became farmers and it was there they raised Irene and her two sisters.

According to the 2016 federal census, there are 1.4 million residents of full or partial Ukrainian origin in Canada.

Manitoba is home to 15 per cent, Saskatchewan 13 per cent, and Alberta 10 per cent.

Ukrainian-Canadians are the country’s 11th largest ethnic group.

Canada has the third largest Ukrainian population in the world, behind only that of Ukraine and Russia. Irene has Ukrainian family living in Sas-

katchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Alberta.

Doty’s parents grew up in Kitsmen, located in southwest Ukraine and only a few kilometers from the Romanian border. Her cousin Marushka lives in the city of Chernivtsi, a few kilometers east of Kitsmen.

Doty and Marushka have been in regular contact for years and now with recent developments are talking virtually daily.

Marushka is extremely worried about the ongoing conflict, but Ukraine is a proud country and willing to fight for their independence. The Ukrainian people have many relatives in adjoining countries, including Russia. While they don’t really have a problem with the Russian people, they do have a problem with Russia’s government, its leader and its ongoing corruption and intimidation.

Marushka remains diligent and defiant, but extremely positive that peace will eventually prevail.

Doty is extremely proud of her Ukrainian heritage.

She is fluent in her native tongue and told us that English could not be spoken in their household growing up even though they spoke only English in school. And

Doty is extremely concerned with the recent unrest in her family’s homeland.

The couple visited Ukraine and her relatives in 2008 and came home with many fond memories.

Integrity Maintenance earns prestigious Saskatchewan Snowmobilers Association Award

By Gord Paulley Owned and operated by Mark and Tracy Slykhuis, Integrity Maintenance recently received a Diamonds in the Snow Award from the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association for their efforts in maintaining and grooming the snowmobile trails at Moose Mountain Provincial Park.

Mark Slykhuis was employed by Carson Welding and Maintenance for 17 years and in 2007, decided to go into business for himself. He owned a single oilfield service truck and together with his brother Nathan, started working for Talisman Energy.

He and Tracy have two children. Cody, 27, is the current owner of Allison Stores, the resort store located at the park. Trinity, 22, lives in Stoughton with her partner David Charles and Trinity’s daughter Oaklyn. She owns and oper-

ates Rising Moon Collective and Allure Attitude Aesthetics. Trinity also specializes in lashes.

Mark and Tracy steadily built up their business and with local work obtained from several large oil companies, notably Crescent Point Energy and Pemoco, quickly expanded.

“We are the plumbers of the oil patch,” he said.

Integrity Maintenance is an oilfield management business that specializes in battery installations, vessel and tank installation, and inspections. It also does flow line installations and repairs, pump jack services and pipeline work.

In just 14 years, Integrity has expanded at a breathtaking pace and now employs 54 people, including two full-time heavy-duty mechanics and three office staff.

While it also has a field office in Weyburn, most of their employees live and

work in the Carlyle area.

Their main operation is located just a few kilometers north and west of Carlyle. It is there where Mark and Tracy reside along with their many oilfield buildings and offices.

Mark and Tracy are a modest couple, but they and their company are well known in the oilpatch and very well respected. They are very hard workers and in fact Mark is still in charge of all dispatching duties.

Both Mark and Tracy are avid snowmobilers and love riding the trails at Kenosee Lake. This winter, Integrity was nominated by the Moose Mountain Snowmobile Club for their efforts.

Then, Integrity donated all of the costs back saving their local club in excess of $10,000.

Mark and Tracy are good corporate citizens and donate to many worthwhile causes in Carlyle and area. Concluded Tracy, “Mark and I are happy to be in business and have great customers and great employees, many of which have been with us for years. Our employees are like family, we respect and appreciate them completely. Without them and our clients we wouldn’t exist as a company.”

Annual volunteer recognition awards presented in Kipling

Each year, the Town of Kipling recognizes volunteers who work to make the community a better place.

The recipients are nominated throughout the year by various individuals and organizations, and adjudicated by a committee made up of one Lions Club member, the leisure services manager and three members from the community.

Nominations are accepted all year long with a deadline of Dec. 31. Forms are available on the Town of Kipling’s website as well as at the town office.

These awards are normally presented at the Kipling Young Centre’s Hearts for Youth banquet, but due to COVID-19, they were presented by Mayor Pat Jackson at the Kipling Community Centre with a small gathering on hand on March 1.

Sharon Cowley received the award in the senior category. Cowley has entertained, with her vocal selections, the residents of Kipling Long-Term Care Home and formerly at Willowdale

Lodge for almost 20 years. She has always encouraged her audience to sing along by carefully choosing songs that are familiar to them. Cowley’s mission is to spread cheer among the residents to enliven their days.

Aaron Borja received the award in the youth category. Borja has volunteered to play the keyboard for the St. Anne’s Catholic Church choir in Kipling since August 2017. He is the only person who plays the keyboard in the parish and plays weekly. As well as playing at regular services, Borja volunteers to play at extra services and funerals. He has a very respectful attitude and is a role model for the younger congregation.

Susan Long received the award in sport and recreation.

Long has devoted many years to the development of volleyball for Kipling and area players of various ages. As well as coaching high school teams for more than 30 years, she coached teams in the youth division of Saskatchewan Volleyball for many years. Long assisted with Kipling School’s recent hosting

She has also been an active volunteer on the Kipling Swimming Pool board and fundraising group for many years.

Florence Poirier received the award in culture and heritage.

Poirier has been involved in the Kipling Music Festival for many years. She values the role that musical education plays in the lives of children and youth, and has been a huge source of encouragement for all participants through the years. In particu-

lar, Poirier has assisted with the annual sponsorship acquisitions of the Kipling Music Festival.

Robert Balogh received the award in the senior category. Balogh has been involved with baseball as an umpire for many years.

He works diligently to keep the sidewalks clear of snow and ice at various locations around the downtown area. Balogh has been very involved with ensuring that Santa is able to visit from the North Pole and attend many December events in Kipling. (He was not in attendance but will receive his award at the end of March.)

Close connection to Ukrainians brings war home

By Murray Mandryk You don’t likely know those people bravely defending their homeland against Russian invaders, yet they probably feel familiar to you.

It’s because you likely know or may know some of their distant cousins.

They now farm next to you. They run the local co-op. Their kids have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, dentists and politicians. A few of them even became journalists.

Our connection to Ukraine is undeniable. It is one reason why what’s now happening in Ukraine hits close to home for all of us.

There are those who argue that close ties shouldn’t be a reason — or at least, shouldn’t be the only reason — for our reaction.

A minority argue that the suffering we are seeing in Ukraine is no different than the suffering we’ve seen in the war-torn Middle East or in African nations.

Still others argue that while we need to support Ukraine in whatever way we can because they are people suffering, we shouldn’t feel obligated to do so simply because they came to Canada in search of a better life. After all, lot of pioneering settlers from Europe came for a better life.

Humans are tribal by nature. Really, it’s why we see invasions and wars like we now see in Ukraine.

Sadly, tribalism sometimes brings out the worst in humanity. At best, it often makes us overly protective of those we consider our own tribes and hesitant to accept those from the outside.

But another very human thing is not really understanding or taking the time to try and understand other the dynamics in which other people are now existing or have existed.

The first such dynamic is that what is happening in Ukraine is a threat to all of us.

Since the last Great War concluded almost 80 years ago, we’ve been forced to live with the understanding that we now have the technology to blow the planet apart.

Those Cold War fears of the Cuban Missile Crisis 60 years ago, or the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan 40 years ago, have largely subsided for past three decades because of the demise of the Soviet Union.

But with Russian President Vladimir Putin reacting to potential Western intervention with threats of making intervening nations suffer like they have never suffered before, what’s now happening in Ukraine has quickly escalated into something different than regional conflicts between nations elsewhere in the world.

We all have an interest and responsibility to condemn what Putin is doing, which makes it extremely bizarre that there are those — even on the Prairies — still endorsing the Fox News/Donald Trump views in support of Putin that resonate with a lot of U.S. Republicans.

Second, while we are likely more inclined to support Ukraine because of the contribution of Ukrainians to Canadian history, that doesn’t necessarily mean we understand their history.

Why “freedom” and “opposition to oppression” is associated with Ukrainians has a lot to do with a millennium-long history of warding off invaders and dictators form the Vikings to the Mongols to the Tartars to the Poles to the Austro-Hungarians to the Russian czars to Russian Soviets to the Nazis to now Putin.

Such oppression is why so many Ukrainians fled to Canada where many endured prejudices including First World War internment camps.

Yet through it all, they became great contributors to our country while holding on to language and cultural ties to where they came from.

It is admirable. But far more admirable is the current Ukrainian resistance to tyranny.

The ship is off course so what can we do?

A new junior high student in a new city headed nervously to lunch. He chose the first bench he could find and sat alone until a student came over and invited him to join others at another table.

The new student said he always remembered the kindness of that invitation.

A newly licensed driver pulled into a gas station and realized that while they knew how to drive, they hadn’t learned how to fill up their vehicle. A stranger who noticed the struggle walked over, pulled out his credit card and gave a quick lesson in how to do it. He paid for the gas in addition to offering the lesson. The

grateful driver never got his name.

A college student lost her mother to cancer over the summer break. When asked over and over about her summer, she had to talk repeatedly about helping plan her mother’s funeral.

A girl who lived across the hall and who attended several of the same classes took note of the pain. Several months later, on the day of her mother’s birthday, the girl across the hall showed up with a cupcake and a candle. A friendship began that resulted in being a bridesmaid down the road.

There are very kind people among us.

Hopefully all of us have the propensity to be kind but it seems some are more naturally inclined to it. Or maybe it’s just that they act on the urge when others have the idea but are unable to follow through. Or choose not to follow through.

Or feel they’re not equipped to do it, believing somebody else will do it better.

We want people to feel welcome but do we think to invite others to our table? Or better yet, to go and sit with them? Moreover, we’ve probably seen someone struggle with a cart of groceries, being stuck in a snowbank, or try-

Carievale area resident Michael Gordon Jackson and his daughter Sarah found safe in Vernon B.C. The search for Michael Gordon Jackson, who has resided in the Carievale-area, and his seven-year-old daughter Sarah came to a peaceful end last week. They were found 1,300 kilometres away from Regina in Vernon, B.C., at around noon on Thursday, according to Sgt. Maj. Darryl Milo, who delivered an update on the case during a press conference held at RCMP Headquarters in Regina on Thursday.

Vernon RCMP officers located Michael Gordon Jackson and Sarah Jackson in a vehicle parked outside of a business in Vernon. No one else was with them.

Sarah is safe and was soon reunited with her mother, Mariecar Jackson, in Regina.

Michael was arrested without incident and was in police custody in Vernon. He has been transferred back to Regina, and made his first court appearance in Regina provincial court on Tuesday. He was to have a bail hearing on Thursday.

“Mariecar has been waiting for this day, and that phone call, from our investigators since last year. She would like to thank everyone who played a role in helping locate her daughter. This includes every single person who took a moment to listen to her pleas released today and last week. Those that shared these videos and kept the conversation about her daughter going,” Milo said.

“Mariecar has asked for privacy at this time as she understandably takes some time to reunite with Sarah.”

He added that they received a lot of help, tips and information from the public from all over, which significantly helped the work of the police officers and the investigation.

“We can say that we received tips and information from multiple provinces. The first video we released on February 15 reached over 440,000 people and was shared over 13,000 times. In the first hour after posting the second video today the video was shared 177 times and reached over 4,500 people,” Milo said.

“To the public and our news partners – those here today, thank you.

You played a role in assisting us with this investigation.”

At this time, no additional people were charged in connection with the case, but Milo said that the situation may change down the road.

“Anyone who was aiding or assisting Michael Gordon Jackson could be charged with the same offence or possibly other related offences,” Milo said. While many details about the role of the public’s tips in locating the Michael and Sarah over the course of the investigation, which lasted for about three months, couldn’t be revealed at this time as the investigation continues, Milo not-

“When Saskatchewan RCMP investigators stand at this podium, often times we are not speaking about good news. This is the nature of the work we do. Today, we achieved the outcome we have been diligently working towards: reuniting Sarah with her mom,” Milo said.

“We want to thank the many police officers from multiple police agencies and in multiple

provinces who assisted with this investigation since November of last year.

“While we cannot go into detail about the specific steps our officers need to take, we want to say this investigation is not over.

“The return of Sarah to her mother is very new and the investigation is ongoing.”

The investigation covered several provinces and numerous police forces within the RCMP and

outside the agency were working side by side. Milo said “there was no limit to where we looked for both Sarah and Michael.”

On Jan. 21, the Saskatchewan RCMP charged Jackson with one count of abduction in contravention of a custody or a parenting order, contrary to Section 282(1) of the Criminal Code, and they obtained Canadawide warrant for his arrest. Sarah’s mother has full custody of her.

Kipling U18 Royals win Round 2 of provincials

By Laura Kish The Kipling U18 Royals are set to go to Round 3 in the U18 provincial C playoffs.

The Royals beat out the Rosetown Redwings 10-1 and 9-5 in the first round.

Game 1 of Round 2 saw the Royals travelling to Gull Lake to face the Greyhounds. Kipling led 3-1 after the first period on goals by Kegan Ksenych, Cyson Romanow and Dawson DeClercq.

Gull Lake scored one each period of the game to tie, but Romanow scored the winning goal in the third

with 43 seconds remaining on the clock.

Both teams were assessed penalties, Royals with five minors and the Greyhounds with seven.

• • • Kipling Royals hosted Gull Lake Greyhounds in Game 2 on Feb. 26.

The first minute of the game had the Royals coaches and fans a bit nervous as the Gull Lake Greyhounds scored at the 45-second mark in the first period.

That woke up the Royals to bring on their best hockey moves.

The first period ended with Kipling leading by

3-1. Goals scored by Peyton Balon, Romanow and Johanson.

The game ended 3-1 with no goals scored in periods two and three.

Penalties were plenty in Game 2, with each team being assessed six minor penalties.

“The players were pretty pumped about the win,” said assistant coach Clayton Romanow.

The Royals will go on to play Round 3 against the Carlyle Cougars.

Romanow gives coaches advice to the team regarding the next round of playoffs.

“Stay healthy and

stay out of the penalty box.”

“We’re down a few players due to absences and injuries,” explains Romanow, who has been an assistant coach since 2019.

He explains the team’s play through the season thus far: “They’re playing pretty good. We have a pretty strong team. They are playing well in the league. We had a couple of rough games and a couple of good games.”

Their league playoffs will also start soon. The Royals are in second place with an 18-3-1 record.

Said Robertson, “Carlyle finished in the middle of the pack and we ended up fifth in a nine-team league. Four of our losses were by only one goal and we played hard and competitively every time out. The Cougars were often short players due to work and COVID related issues, but we never quit and I felt we delivered an entertaining product.”

Robertson added, “We had a good goaltending tandem of Ryan Kulyk and Landon Audette. Nearly half of our players were new to the team, namely Kulyk,

Koby Morrisseau, Derek Fleck, Rhett Palmer, Colby Himmelspach, Devin Fafard, Matt Lavallee and Gavin Froese. These new additions meshed well with the other veterans: Ben Johnstone, Jon Gaudet, Brent McLean, Zach Brown, Tyler Fleck, Dakota Rose, Brett Turgeon, Cooper Fox, Billy Greenwood, and Branden Lequyer. Morrisseau, Johnstone, and Gaudet all finished in the top ten in league scoring. Froese is one of the top three defencemen in the Big Six.” Robertson thoroughly enjoyed his first year of coaching the senior Cougars.

Ocean Man officially recognized as Treaty 4 land Ocean Man First Nation signed a landmark agreement Feb. 23 with Marc Miller, the federal Minister of Crown Indigenous Relations, which officially recognizes Ocean Man’s status as a Treaty 4 First Nation.

Ocean Man adhered to Treaty No. 4 on Sept.

15, 1875. A reserve was subsequently surveyed and set apart for Ocean Man near present day Stoughton, and the people of Ocean Man occupied that land until 1901, when Canada wrongfully amalgamated Ocean Man with two nearby First Nations, Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation and White Bear First Nations.

After the amalgamation, Canada stopped recognizing Ocean Man and Pheasant Rump as First Nations separate from White Bear. The people of Ocean Man and Pheasant Rump were moved to the White Bear reserve, and continued to reside there for decades.

In 1989, Ocean Man was formally recognized as a First Nation

by Canada, despite the wrongful amalgamation of 1901. However, there was disagreement over whether the Ocean Man First Nation that was recognized in 1989 was the same band as the one that adhered to

Treaty 4 in 1875.

Ocean Man and Canada signed the agreement under which Canada officially recognizes that Ocean Man has existed continually since 1875, has never been lawfully extinguished, amalgamated or dissolved, and has never surrendered its treaty rights.

"This agreement formally recognizes Canada’s ongoing Treaty relationship with Ocean Man First Nation, and their inherent rights under Treaty No. 4," said Miller. "We look forward to continuing to work together as treaty partners to advance reconciliation and build a better future based on community priorities. Congratulations to Chief (Connie) Big Eagle, Elders and community members on this historic day."

The agreement was signed at a private ceremony held in Regina, attended by Ocean Man leadership and elders, and virtually by Miller and other federal government representatives. The signatures were followed by an exchange of gifts between Ocean Man and Canada, and ceremonial songs by a traditional hand drummer from Ocean Man. The agreement is the product of years of negotiations between

Ocean Man and Canada at a recognition of Indigenous rights and self determination (RIRSD) table, and marks the end of a prolonged period of disagreement between Ocean Man and the Government of Canada with respect to Ocean Man’s status as a Treaty 4 First Nation. While there remains much to be done at the RIRSD table as Ocean Man and Canada work towards reconciliation and righting the wrongs of 1901 and afterward, Ocean Man is hopeful the agreement will lead to meaningful progress in the months ahead.

Of the recognition agreement, Big Eagle said: “Ocean Man has been working toward and waiting for significant progress in our negotiations with Canada for many years. I want to acknowledge and thank all past and current Ocean Man leadership for their contributions in bringing us to the signing of this recognition agreement between Ocean Man and Canada.”

Ocean Man also wishes to thank Pheasant Rump and White Bear for their support at the RIRSD table and in advancing Ocean Man’s aim of having its rights, history and nationhood finally recognized.

From mother to daughter - an ownership change at Carlyle Home Hardware store

By Gord Paulley Nancy and Gilles Matthewson have been proud owners of Carlyle Home Hardware and recently have handed the reins over to their daughter Katie Gavelin.

The Observer had the opportunity to discuss the transition with mother and daughter at their store located on Railway Avenue East.

The Matthewsons purchased Carlyle Home Hardware in 2005 from Boyd and Betty Cochrane.

The store had been situated on Main Street Carlyle for decades. At the time, both Gilles and Nancy operated successful businesses.

Gilles owns and operates G.M. Construction Ltd., and to this day continues to build and renovate residential and commercial properties. Nancy owned and operated New Dimensions Hair Studio after apprenticing under Marsha McLean back in the mid- 1980s.

Said Nancy: “We knew that the Cochranes were ready to retire and we made them an offer.

Originally, we purchased Home Hardware thinking that Gilles would manage it and exit the construction industry. Like many

things in life, our plans changed.”

Gilles continued with his construction business and in 2009 Nancy sold New Dimensions. A plan was then set in motion to building a new store, and property on Railway Avenue East was purchased. The brand new 12,000-square foot store, which includes 9,000 square feet of retail space, was opened in 2011.

Employed under both the Cochranes and Matthewsons, Leslie Moore worked for Home Hardware for nearly 40 years and retired in December 2015. She was the Matthewson’s store manager from 2005 until the move to the new premises took place.

Said Moore, ”I was proud to be a part of the Home Hardware family all those years. I hired and worked with many fine people and was more than happy to have Boyd, Betty, Gilles and Nancy as my employers.”

Gilles and Nancy have three sons, Tyler, Jesse and Sam, and the one daughter. Katie graduated from Gordon F. Kells High School and then attended university in Regina. She returned home after only a few weeks and resumed

working at Home Hardware. Gavelin, now 27, is married to Skyler, and they have two boys, Maverick, three, and Grayson, one.

They built a new residence and have lived on Hayward Drive since 2017.

Her husband has been employed as a carpenter with GM Construction for several years. While Gilles continues to enjoy working and building homes, Nancy decided that it was time to retire and enjoy whatever life brings. After years of being in business including managing Home Hardware, she and her husband have decided to hand ownership over to their daughter.

Said Katie, “I think I am ready to take over managing the store and with the help of my family, I’m confident I will be able to handle the day-today operations.”

Carlyle Home Hardware has won numerous awards over the years and was Saskatchewan’s top area store from 20122015. It was selected as the Carlyle and Area Chamber of Commerce top business of the year in 2017. Despite the ongoing pandemic, the Carlyle store achieved record sales volume in 2020, and

Said Nancy, “With the medical restrictions, more and more people are shopping locally. Carlyle has everything to offer and you don’t have to go to the city to find virtually anything else.”

Home Hardware happily contributes to many local charities and causes. Recently they installed new basketball nets at the elementary school, and purchased and planted trees at the golf course, swimming pool and elementary school. Every June in their parking lot, they sponsor a barbeque with all proceeds earmarked for that year’s Gordon F. Kells High School graduating class.

Regarding Nancy, she is extremely active in retirement. Her mother, Grete Smith, lives in Carlyle and Gilles’ parents are alive and well in Redvers.

She and Gilles are building their seasonal home at Kenosee Lake and are on leasehold shoreline with an incredible view of the water. Katie’s two boys keep her busy, as do the triplets of Jesse’s;

Nancy also enjoys baking and cooking. She is very athletic, is an avid walker, and enjoys kayaking and paddle boarding.

And she recently added another interesting hobby to her many activities.

Nancy changes the information sign at the Carlyle Elementary School.

Her jokes on the bulletin board are becoming legendary and her granddaughters, students, and teachers alike cannot believe how corny they are.

Kipling Fire Department called to fire Kipling Fire Department responded to a structure fire 12 miles south of Kipling at 10:00 am on Monday morning. Three units and eleven firefighters responded to the call but despite their efforts, the building itself and its contents were a total loss other than some items outside the shop. Celebrate Seniors Group is seeking participants from the southeast The Rural Dementia Action Research (RaDAR) team at Usask is seeking participants from the Carlyle and Kipling areas for a new project.

Dr. Debra Morgan is a professor at the Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan and leads the RaDAR team. The RaDAR team consists of a group of researchers from various disciplines that have

been working together for 20 years to improve access to health care and services for people living with dementia and their families living in rural Saskatchewan.

Back in 2004, they started a specialist Rural and Remote Memory Clinic at the university to provide diagnosis of the less common, more difficult-to-diagnosis cases of dementia. But they found that they receive many referrals for

The Rural Dementia Action Research (RaDAR) Team at the University of Saskatchewan is

LOOKING FOR PARTICIPANTS To take part in a telephone interview about local community-based programs and services that might be used by people living with dementia and family caregivers of people living with dementia.

Research Participant Criteria:

Alzheimer Disease, the most common type of dementia which Canadian guidelines recommend be diagnosed by primary care providers (i.e., family physicians or nurse practitioners) in the person’s community, because they know them best and also the community services available.

“But we know that making a dementia diagnosis can be challenging, so we began to partner with rural primary health care teams to find ways to support diagnosis and post-diagnostic care right in the rural community and also save travel to specialists,” the RaDAR team said in a news release.

What came out of this partnership is a one-stop memory clinic where the person and their family are seen in their community by a team of healthcare providers. A team-based approach is what the RaDAR team called “the gold standard” for dementia diagnosis and care.

So they started working with one team and now have memory clinics in several communities in southeast Saskatchewan, and they are looking to continue scaling them up to other locations.

Part of this environmental scan involves telephone interviews with people who are living with dementia and family caregivers of people living with dementia, who reside in and around the communities where they currently have rural memory clinics, including Kipling and Carlyle, to explore their experience with local community-based programs and services.

The interview will take about 45-60 minutes and persons living with dementia and family caregivers can choose whether to participate on their own or together in a joint interview.

The goal with this part of the project is to explore their perspec-

tives of, and experiences with, community-based programs and services.

They hope to identify what programs and services they are aware of, which ones they use and do not use and why, barriers to accessing and using services, unmet service and program needs, and recommendations to overcome barriers and improve services.

Even those who have not used services can provide valuable information about what changes would be needed to make services more accessible or useful. In addition, participants may learn about available programs and services they were previously unaware of.

Alida news - ladies bonspiel a fashionable event The Alida Ladies One-Day Bonspiel was held on Feb. 26 with six teams registered. As always, most of the teams came all decked out in their finest Get-ups: The entries were Under Cover Agents (Jean Ball, Margaret Peet, Brenda Junk and Anita Boutin); Team Wide and Heavy (Lindsey Humeniuk, Cheryl Ohander, Dawn Eilers and Samanatha Peet); Beauty Queens (Melissa Gervais, April Junk, Diane Potapinski and Sheri Patton); Sweeping Beauties – (Michele Anderson, Skylar Mailhiot, Stephanie Campbell and Kara McNish); Witchy Ladies (Marcia Gervais, Shelly Cowan, Melynda Charles, Ainsley Cowan and coach Edel Cowan); and Fringe Minority Convoy (Shandi Boutin, Aly Poirier, Rayna Real and Tristen Boutin).

Teams showed off their curling skills and how not to walk on very icy ice. Results of the bonspiel were as follows: the A event was won by Wide & Heavy when they defeated Fringe Minority. The B event saw Beauty Queens win over Under Cover Agents. The

best dressed team was Fringe Minority Convoy.

A very good time was definitely had by all participants and the spectators as well. Also during the day a trade show was held with five vendors showing off their wares. A silent auction table was on display with many great prizes to be had and at the end of the evening these items were soon drawn for and winners picked up their prizes.

The proceeds of this auction brought in a total of $1,300 which will be donated to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan. A fried chicken supper was served to approximately 90 people.

The Alida Wrecks hockey team also hosted their annual tournament on Feb. 26 with four teams participating. The results of this tournament were as follows: the Alida Wrecks won the trophy when they defeated Storthoaks 4-3. Bellegarde placed third and Maryfield fourth. Overall it was a good tournament.

Showing support for Choose Life Ministry People gathered on Saturday to support the Coldest Night of the Year walk for Choose Life Ministry.

The Estevan Gospel Chapel was the startfinish point. Participants walked distances of two or five kilometres on a cool, late February evening.

Choose Life founder Shelley Boyes was pleased to see that the temperature did warm up in time for the walk, as frigid temperatures had gripped the southeast in the days prior to the walk.

“The walkers were all

excited to be there and take part,” said Boyes.

“We had everything from a baby in a stroller to six people in their 60s walking.”

They seemed to have a good time and were eager to walk for Choose Life.

A total of 39 walkers participated, with seven teams and a few individuals registered. There were 145 donors and the event raised more than $11,000, with some pledges still to come in.

The top fundraising team was the Giant Slayers, who brought in $4,245. Two people

raised at least $1,000: Brenda Johnston of the Giant Slayers and Leslie Hunstad, who entered as an individual.

After the walk, people returned to the church for hot beverages, soup and snacks, in addition to fellowship. Everyone she talked to said they would be back next year.

The money that was raised will be directed towards programming at Choose Life’s Homestead for Hope, located outside of Gainsborough. It provides assistance to young adult women with life controlling issues. Boyes noted that they are cur-

rently at capacity.

It was also a great opportunity to build awareness of Choose Life.

“It really helps spread the messages, and every year we’re hoping it will get bigger and broader and include more people,” said Boyes.

Coldest Night of the Year walks are held in communities throughout the country to support charities. The walk is billed as a chance to support the hungry, hurt and homeless.

The ministry also operates several Second Chance Thrift Stores, including one in Carlyle.

Carlyle RCMP report - concern about break and enters

By Sgt. Dallyn Holmstrom I guess it’s human nature to always try and get something for free. However, people that steal or take property that doesn’t belong to them should be ashamed of themselves.

Everywhere I go, I am constantly surprised how brazen thieves can be by going into people’s homes or onto people’s property to steal items that don’t belong to them. There is absolutely no excuse to steal someone else’s property and if you’re caught, you can count on being charged criminally.

This week the Carlyle RCMP responded to several break and enters and thefts with several items stolen, which I will discuss further in this week’s report.

Nothing makes police happier that catching people with sticky fingers.

Even though sometimes our justice system isn’t as strict as we would like, here in rural Saskatchewan, where everyone knows everyone, your reputation is everything.

On Feb. 25, RCMP responded to five break

and enters in Wawota.

Front Porch Interiors, McCarthy Veterinary Services, Andrew Agencies, the RM of Wapole shop and the Wawota Curling Rink were all broken into when the door was pried open. In each of the break and enters, the degenerates stole money from the cash register. Forensic Identification Services attended and processed all the scenes. Fingerprints were able to be lifted from a couple of the scenes so hopefully we can identify who was responsible for these break and enters. All the break and enters took place during the night. If you happened to see anyone driving around on the night of the 24th or know any information about these break and enters, please call the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

The Carlyle RCMP spent a lot of time at the hospital this week, making sure people were okay. The current mental health crisis in Canada only seems to be getting worse. I want to ensure that if someone needs the suicide prevention phone number, that it is always available in the

paper for them. Mental health calls this week varied from people with dementia, people suffering from drug and alcohol psychosis, to people suffering from depression. We want to encourage everyone to reach out for help and talk to someone if they can. No matter how bad things may seem, remember that they will always get better. Life can be very difficult to say the least.

Please reach out and check in with friends, co-workers and family to see how they are doing. It’s a perfectly normal question to ask people how they are. Don’t let people suffer in silence. If you see someone that you believe needs some help but won’t accept help from you, please let the police or their family know.

In Saskatchewan you can call/text the mental health crisis line at 2-1-1, Counselling Connect Saskatchewan Canadian Mental Health Association 1-306-384-9333 The Carlyle RCMP was busy conducting traffic stops this week, issuing 29 tickets for speeding, inadequate

lights and failing to have a driver’s licence, to name a few. The most expensive tickets this week were for unregistered vehicles, with fines coming in at $580.

The highest ticket of the week for speeding was $312 for traveling 118 kilometres per hour in an 80 zone.

On Feb. 22, officers took a complaint from a concerned motorist on Highway 13 who was following a semi and trailer travelling at a slow rate of speed and swerving from side to side. Members located the semi on the highway near Arcola. The driver of the semi advised that he was very concerned about the icy roads and that he would be pulling over at the next rest stop. The driver was not impaired.

On Feb. 23, RCMP responded to a house on the White Bear First Nations due to the door being kicked in. The homeowner did not think anything was missing from the house and did not know who would have kicked her door down. Carlyle RCMP is requesting anyone with information about this incident to call 306-453-6707.

On Feb. 24, officers responded to a report of a gas and dash at the Esso in Redvers. The culprits were tracked down by the RCMP. This turned out to be a miscommunication and both the driver and the passenger of the vehicle had thought the other paid for the gas. They then phoned, paid for their gas and apologized for the inconvenience.

On Feb. 27, RCMP responded to a call from a frantic 34-year-old man in the area, stating that a bear was in his house. RCMP, along with conservation officers, attended the residence and determined that there was no bear in the residence and that a dog had gotten its paw stuck in the door.

The caller was a little em-bear-assed.

That same day, the RCMP received a call of a vehicle driving on Highway 13 on its rim with no tire near Redvers. RCMP located the vehicle parked. Both occupants in the ve-

hicle were intoxicated but RCMP were unable to determine who was driving when the complaint was made. RCMP also observed open alcohol in the vehicle.

The occupants in the vehicle were arrested and charged for open alcohol in a vehicle and breaching court conditions. Both occupants were then transported to Carlyle RCMP to have a sleep, even though they weren’t tire-d.

On Feb. 28, members received a call of a female refusing to leave a residence in Redvers.

The caller stated that he and a female spent the night drinking in his house and she was now refusing to leave.

The RCMP attended and spoke to the intoxicated female, who said she was too intoxicated to walk anywhere and didn’t have anywhere else to go.

RCMP arrested the female for mischief as she was not welcome in the house. Police lodged the female in their bed and breakfast to provide her a safe place to sleep and sober up. The female was released the next morning with no charges.
