The milestone 10th edition of the Bow Valley Jamboree showcased the talents of musicians and artists, as it has in the past, to the delight of the people who gathered Saturday at the Bow Valley Park south of wascapacity,approximatelynoon,year.onCommittee,bowMoncriefspectacular,”wascrowderablyyear’speopleApproximatelyOxbow.900attendedthisfestival,consid-morethanthetheyhadlastyear.“IwouldsaythedaynothinglessthansaidLoriwiththeOx-ArtsandCulturalwhichputsthefestivaleachEarlyintheafter-theparkwasatone-thirdwhichshesaidbusierthannormal.“Theylikethe flow of the acts. There were no breaks. The crowd was up dancing early. And everybody was happy to be together,” said Moncrief.Fans were excited about the lineup. After a performance by a bagpipes and drums band, the crowd was treated to seven acts: Downwind, Dusty Rain, Teagan Littlechief, Chris Henderson, the Bromantics, the Tilted Kilts and the Blu Beach“WhenBand.the Tilted Kilts got up to play, we had a lot of kilt wearers in the audience. A lot of the local guys chose to wear kilts, so that really added to the day,” said Moncrief.Littlechief’s powerful voice was a highlight, she said. The Bromantics had people up and dancing, Dusty Rain is an up-and-coming local act, Henderson is always a solid performer, the Blu Beach Band entertained the crowd late at night and Moncrief marvelled at Downwind’s ability to still perform more than 40 years after being“Theyformed.stillhave what it takes. Dianne Twietmeyer’s voice is absolutely phenomenal,” said Moncrief.Theyexpected it to be one of the best lineups they’ve had in a while, and she believes the musicians delivered. A congo line formed at one point during The Bromantics’ set. Feedback from the spectators has been positive, Moncrief said. Food vendors were sold out or down to their final servings of food. Moncrief cited other reasons for the larger crowd besides the strong list of performers. The weather was more cooperative this year, since it wasn’t so hot outside, and people are more willing to gather in large crowds than at this time lastAnyear.artist display was part of the festival this year, too. Run by committee member Kim Friesen, who is an artist, Moncrief was excited about displaying local artisans’ work. “Right at the gate, people paid admission, and then they saw a great display of artwork, so that’s important to our committee. We want to promote artists’ work and we want to promote culture,” said Moncrief. Friesen’s work was on display, and she was joined by James Allan, Amy Brook, Caleb Severson, Jeremy Maffenbeier and Colin Baldwin. People could view and even purchase the artwork. Pre-sale tickets were available for the festival for the first time, and the organizers were able to sell about 120. Moncrief believes advanced tickets will be available again next year. “It’s good promotion, and then when we sell that many [in advance] it shows we should do it again,” said Moncrief. Moncrief estimates approximately 40 volunteers make the event happen. Each year they try to add a few more. “We have a group of people who have been doing it for many, many years, and we need their guidance and their experience, but we also need new blood. We can add some more volunteers for next year. It only improves an event like this for Oxbow and area.”There has been talking about adding a Friday evening attraction for the festival, which they believe would draw more people to the town. They could stay in a hotel or at the park, and have a weekend in Oxbow. PM40011904

Neon Light Night in Carnduff Carnduff ’s pool was filled with swimmers and neon lights. Photo by Corey Purves.
By Paul Kimball It was Neon Light Night at Carndu ff ’s pool on Aug. 5. Pool manager Corey Purves wanted to do something to raise money for some pool enhancements. As she and her sta ff pondered the possibilities, they decided to have a late swim, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. and to make it unique by brightening things up with neon lights. All the lights were donated and the lifeguarding team donated their time. Every cent of the admission fees would go towards making the pool even better. On a rather chilly evening where the temperature dipped to 15 C, 84 swimmers showed up. Thankfully the water temperature was almost twice as warm at 29 C. Everyone was quick to get into the water and slower coming out. When everything was added up, $440 had been raised.

It was New Year’s Eve. Allen Wilson was at a dance in Oxbow when his eyes happened to land on a young lady by the name of Joyce Glaspey.Hisheart skipped a beat so he decided to ask her to dance. She said yes and during that dance, her heart skipped a beat as well. They ended up dancing most of the night away. They had met previously at the Tripp Drug Store in Oxbow where she worked. But it wasn’t until the dance that they felt their hearts beating for each other. Joyce went to school for a year in Regina shortly after and they kept in touch, mostly by phone but also by letter-writing. When she returned to Oxbow, she began working for the Royal Bank. On New Year’s Eve, two years after that first dance, Allen proposed. Again, Joyce said yes. On June 28, 1952, they wereAndmarried.onJuly 2, at the Oxbow Senior Centre, about 70 people gathered to celebrate their 70 years of marriage. Those years have been happy ones for the Wilsons. Top of the list was family. Ten years after tying the knot, the children started coming. First it was Deanna and then a year-and-ahalf later, along came Marlis. They have enjoyed sharing life together. They’ve hardly ever fought. They’ve spent lots of time dancing, of course. They’ve also curled and bowled together and have traveled to places like Hawaii and England. They’ve also taken driving holidays throughout North America. In recent years, Joyce has been falling a lot and decided to put her name on a waiting list at the Bow Valley Villa in Oxbow. That was tough as it would mean moving out of Heritage Court and living apart from her Shortlyhusband.after their 70th anniversary, she received word that a room was available. Four days after the celebration, she moved. They both found that day difficult. Allen and Joyce have heart issues in their medical history. In 1999, Allen had a seven-way bypass and a valve replacement. In 2016, a pacemaker was inserted. Joyce has had a transcatheter aortic valve implantation. Their hearts are weaker. Despite this, their hearts still beat strongly for each other, even after 70 years. They’re hoping to make it at least to 75 years. As Joyce said, they’re both ornery enough that they’ll likely make it. (306)

To suggest the Saskatchewan Party was ever truly a Progressive Conservatives-Liberal amalgamation has always a stretch. What is true, however, is that it was formed as a vehicle to defeat the NDP and it has demonstrated a willingness to grow and adapt. It has had little choice. Since the Sask. Party’s formation 25 years ago on Aug. 8, 1997, this province has seen massive change Whether this party can continue to adapt to a continually changing province is a huge challenge for any party. The conflicting problem for political parties is that people want them to consistently stand for some meaningful philosophies or principles. However, that can never appeal to everyone and people. People also want and expect political parties to adjust to changing times and circumstances. For the bulk of the past quarter century, the Sask. Party seemed to find a sweet spot that has appealed to a majority of Saskatchewan. To be historically precise, the Sask. Party came into being when four former Liberals and four Progressive Conservative MLAs came together to form a new party that would immediately become the Official Opposition to an NDP government then in the sixth year of what would be a 16-year run. That, however, is surely not the whole story. The story of the Sask. Party was always one of pure political pragmatism — the culmination of lessons learned from history that the only way to defeat the NDP that consistently formed government with less than 50 per cent of the popular vote was to avoid splitting the province’s centre-right/right-wing vote. That said, the Sask. Party was always more than centre. The founding PCs members – Bill Boyd, Dan D’Autremont, Ben Heppner and Don Toth – were never really “progressive” conservatives. Somewhat similarly, the four original Liberals — Ken Krawetz, Rod Gantefoer, Bob Bjornrud and June Draude — all tended to the be on the right side of the party. While the PCs were escaping the political past of the 1980s Grant Devine PC government leading it to oblivion, the Liberals were escaping ties to the then Jean Chretien federal Liberals and its gun control legislation and party infighting. But it generally worked in a changing province — especially after the selection of the more charismatic and slightly more “progressive” Brad Wall as leader in 2004.The Sask. Party even managed to attract and keep former Reform MPs like its initial leader Elwin Hermanson and Alan Kerpan. The Sask. Party success was further aided by a strong economy. But even as the province’s resource-based economy weakened in the last decade, the Sask. Party was bolstered in the past two elections of defining Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the enemy. But where does it go from here? The problem for the Sask. Party is that after its first re-election in 2011, it’s become obvious the NDP has not posed a serious threat to forming government in Saskatchewan.Newemerging threats come from the Buffalo Party and the United Saskatchewan Party, which sees old Reformers drifting off to these new, even more rightwing and anti-Trudeau movements.

For the first time in four years, I was able to make it to a Saskatchewan Roughriders’ home game last month. My folks were visiting as part of their cross-Canada trip, and Dad and I thought it would be a good idea to watch the Riders take on the Toronto Argonauts. Ironically, the last time we went to a game was also between Saskatchewan and Toronto, but that was in Toronto. (While you don’t see many fans at Argo games, BMO Field in Toronto is a great place to watch a game. The view of Lake Ontario can be rather distracting).Granted, this game had a lot going against it when it came to fan support. It was supposed to be played the day before, but had to be pushed back a day due to a COVID-19 outbreak on the Riders. There were some players on the Riders unable to play. And the Green and White were starting their No. 3 quarterback. He certainly showed why he was a thirdstring quarterback. Not exactly a recipe for a game that will appear on ESPN Classic for years to Saskatchewancome. actually held the lead in the fourth quarter, but ultimately lost by 10. But still, you have to wonder why the Riders attendance hasn’t been better since the CFL resumed at the start of the 2021Theseason.

first game in 2021, against the B.C. Lions, was a sellout. And they had a great crowd on Labour Day last year against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but that’s Labour Day. You could have a Labour Day game in which both teams are 0-9 to start the season, and it would still draw a bigThecrowd. announced crowds have been fine, usually north of 25,000, but still thousands of fans short of a sellout. The actual attendance has been much lower. A lot of nights, it seems like there are more empty green seats than green-clad fans in the stands. We’re not at the point in which we’re going to be seeing a Save the Riders Telethon any time soon, and the Riders’ brass hasn’t sounded alarm bells about the future of the team, but the number of fans present has been disappointing.Lastyear fans were pointing to the proof of vaccination policy as a reason for the disappointing crowds, but the crowds were low even before that requirement was enacted. (Last August, people were saying a proof of vaccination policy would help). Bottom line, the majority of people in Saskatchewan were double-vaccinated, even last summer and fall, and the vast majority of those in Saskatoon and Regina had two doses of the vaccine.Last year the CFL was not an entertaining product, and that definitely played a factor in the high volume of empty seats. But the league has made changes to make the game more exciting to watch. Those have paid off, although a lot of work remains before the CFL gets back to 60 points a game we once saw. Some people might still believe they aren’t getting enough bang for their buck. A lot of people want to see lower ticket prices. Sometimes I think the CFL forgets its place in the football hierarchy. In terms of the calibre of players, it’s the No. 2 football league on the planet. But it’s not the NFL, and its tickets need to be affordable. For a family of four from outside of greater Regina area to attend a game, it’s expensive, especially if you want to watch from excellent seats. You also have to factor in food, drinks, fuel costs and possibly even a hotel, along with anything else associated with the cost of a game. However, the Riders and other teams will point out that if they lower the price of tickets, they have to sell a proportionately higher number of tickets. Yes, a large crowd looks better on TV, and it creates the feeling of a place you want to go, but will revenues be better if tickets are lower? Is going to a Rider game the same priority that it was three years ago, even for season ticket holders? Or are they looking at other options for summer entertainment, especially this summer, which is the closest we’ve had to a normal summer in terms of opportunities? It’s still fun going to a Rider game. Mosaic Stadium is still a wonderful place to watch a game – the best in the league. And the fans are still passionate. But it is frustrating to see so many empty seats at a Rider game, even if it’s a rescheduled game happening at 5 p.m. on a Sunday night.
Where have the fans gone?

Current Premier Scott Moe has made Trudeau and the Liberals such a popular target, he’s created a market for those with more extreme views on federalism that are seeking out other parties. There is no question the Sask. Party has achieved remarkable success in its short 25 years of existence. But there’s no question that it’s facing future challenges. faces ne

Without an increase, international recruitment of employees will be delayed. A proportionate share of national immigration, as contemplated in the Saskatchewan Immigration Accord, would see, at minimum, 13,000 positions allocated to the province in A2022.Saskatchewan Accord similar to the Quebec Accord will enable our immigration strategy to meet the needs of Saskatchewan employers and improve the outcomes for our new neighbours. It could also speed up the process with current wait times reaching 40 months, something our province could help with. Currently, it takes Saskatchewan two to six weeks to process a request on the selectionWaitingside.on the sidelines to cause additional issues are the newly announced federal government’s fertilizer emission reduction targets. This arbitrary goal wasn’t even on the agenda when provincial and federal agriculture leaders met in July, yet the announcement came just days later. Provinces tried to push Ottawa to have a conversation about the targets but were disappointed to learn they were already set.

Submitted by Betty Walker The first week in August we have had much going on. We had our Appreciation barbecue and was it something. First we gathered in the courtyard to listen to Keith and Gary’s music for an hour and the smell of hamburgers and hot dogs being prepared for supper.Inside the tables were filled with buns, salads and soft drinks, and we ended with cake and ice cream. Thank you for the social time. About 40 were in attendance. We had adults and children come from the Maryfield Mennonite Church to lead us in singing, a message and prayers. If Fred Krukoff is reading this, they asked about you and said they sure missed your voice, as we all do. Sarah and her two daughters came and gave us another painting class. This time is was a sunrise over the ocean. It is just amazing to see how it ends up. Thank you.Sarah and girls go to so much work and we have a fun time. We’ve been having lots of fresh raspberries, and some of our own beans, onions and tomatoes. We had a gift of some baby carrots and they were so good. Thanks to the people who are so generous to share and think of us.
Maryfield Sunrise Villa report by Daryl Harrison Just when Canadians should be coming together after two difficult years, the federal government is driving a wedge between east and west. In recent months, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal minority government has made several decisions that will negatively impact Saskatchewan and Western Canada. We will always stand up against these divisive and damaging policies to ensure our province has sustainable growth for the Sincefuture.the Russian invasion of Ukraine, our province has been helping those impacted by senseless violence. Saskatchewan residents and businesses have made donations, opened their communities and helped hire Ukrainians who have arrived in our province. We should be helping as many people as we can, but Ottawa has diverted flights with newcomers away from Saskatchewan with no explanation.Withthehelp of philanthropist Enrique Pineyro, our government organized a private flight to assist those who wanted to get to our province. A second humanitarian flight is being organized this month out of Warsaw.

We have the jobs and the capacity to assist these new residents, all while supporting a growing province. We know our province’s needs and the labour market better than the Government of Canada. Their current approach does not align with the direction of Saskatchewan’s growth. To address our economic needs and gaps in the labour market, we need more autonomy and flexibility with immigration. With that in mind, our government has put forward a detailed proposal to give Saskatchewan similar authority over immigration as the province of Quebec. Under the Quebec Accord, Ottawa reviews immigrants only based on national security concerns. Quebec then selects the applicants destined for that province.Saskatchewan is asking for the same rights so that our province is not limited to applicants who fit into economic categories deemed important by the federal government. We should also not be limited by caps on provincial nominee programs that Ottawa sets out. Saskatchewan will likely exceed our cap of 6,000 people under the Program.ImmigrantSaskatchewanNominee

By Gord Paulley During the past few months, the Town of Carlyle has been upgrading its recreational facilities and the Carlyle Sports Arena has been the benefactor of numerousEarlierupgrades.this spring, the artificial ice plant required a new condenser which has been installed. The three components that facilitate heat exchange in an indirect refrigeration system include the chiller, the compressor and the condenser.Thecondenser uses cooler ambient air to extract heat from ammonia gas. It is hopeful that the upgraded system will provide the skating rink with good quality artificial ice for years to come.Last month, employees of Vermilion Energy provided the Town of Carlyle with hours of goodwill labour repainting the sports arena bleachers.Clayton Geiger is employed as a lead operator. Vermilion Energy entered southeast Saskatchewan through the acquisition of a private oil company in 2014. They significantly expanded their footprint in the area with the acquisition of Spartan Energy Corporation in 2018.

“All Vermilion employees are expected to volunteer up to two days a year to assist their hometowns in free time and labour. These are known as care days and eight of us decided to help our skating rink with some much-needed painting.”Thesports arena’s ice resurfacer was 30 years old and had to be upgraded. A new Model 446 Zamboni was purchased and delivered to Carlyle last week. The old Zamboni has been sold to the town of Manitou, Man. That community was still using the old tractor method of flooding and was very excited about moving up to an actual iceFinally, resurfacer.the Sports Arena was also in dire need of an upgraded sound system and a new one has been ordered. Hopefully installation will occur before the start of hockey season, which is slated for October.Mayor Jenn Sedor is a promoter of recreation in Carlyle and is pleased to see the recent upgrades and improvements to several of its facilities.
“I am very happy to see all the progress coming from our recreation team and volunteers. There is so much to be proud of in our community. Thanks to all for your efforts in the maintenance of our facilities.”

Carnduff
By Paul Kimball In 1992, Annette Bayliss began working for Carnduff as an assistant herwasadministratoringforandpaper,ingtrator.asnettetown.stillthatLittleadministrator.didsheknow30yearslatershe’dbeworkingfortheSheisnowAn-Brownandworksthetown’sadminis-Shehadbeenwork-forthelocalnews-theGazette-Post,wasgoingtoschoolcomputeraccount-whentheassistantpositionavailable.Thoughquali fications fell short of the requirements, she successfully applied. The town held the job while she finished her final month of schooling. That schooling stretch was a tough nine months for Brown. A single mom with two children, she attended classes in Saskatoon. The kids’ grandmother looked after the children while she studied. Brown came home on weekends and the kids were brought up to Saskatoon for the summer months. The rest of the time, she cried herself to sleep due to missing her children so much. However, the sacrifice paid off. For 10 years, she worked as Kevin Stephenson’s assistant and when he left, she was encouraged to apply for his position as administrator. She didn’t, as she felt that she was not yet ready. For another eight years, she continued on in her role, working with Rodney Audette. When he stepped down, she was urged to apply by many people, including the mayor and council and perhaps most important of all, her husband Sherman. This time, she went for it, as she felt more prepared. Her only hesitation was that the new position meant that she would be spending less time with people and more time with a computer. She took a few courses to meet the job requirements and in 2010 she became Carnduff ’s administrator.Her30years of working for the town were recognized on Aug. 2 in council chambers. Town residents came and went for a couple of hours, passing on their congratulations and enjoying cake, cupcakes, coffee and iced tea. What does a town administrator do? Brown makes sure that all the policies and bylaws are kept updated, ensures that taxation and assessments are correct, draws up a rough draft for the yearly budget, works with those who are delinquent in paying their bills and even, by her own choice, goes up and down the streets of Carndu ff to take water metre readings.Metre-reading might seem like something that can be farmed out, but Annette chooses to do it because it saves taxpayers’ money. That is a high value for Brown, to be extremely careful with how tax money is spent. She is as careful with town money as she is with her own. She always looks for sales before making any purchases. She has such a reputation for spending frugality that when council got together to plan her 30th anniversary party, they volunteered their time for the meeting. She is proud of many things that have happened under her tenure. Carndu ff ’s lagoon project began in 2010 and she’s looking forward to the day when that will be completed. New water metres were installed in every home in 2016 and much to Brown’s delight, it was covered by a grant and didn’t cost the town’s taxpayers a cent. Brown is an administrator who sees herself as serving her community and she has no immediate plans to retire.

Alameda’s 4-H Club meets with Premier Scott Moe
By Paul Kimball Aug. 4 was a special day at Alameda’s campground.Premier Scott Moe was scheduled to attend a town hall meeting in Arcola that night and he made a point of having a meet-and-greet time for the 4-H clubs in the morning.Hewas joined by local MLA Daryl Harrison and judging by the turnout, the 4-H kids and members of municipal councils were eager to meet the government officials. There are seven chapters of 4-H in District 41. Three of them attended. The majority were from Alameda; many others came from Carnduff and one made the trip from Redvers.Thehour-long get-together began with Madeline Christensen presenting the premier with a gift on behalf of the 4-H clubs. Moe didn’t open the gift when it was presented.Moe introduced himself and Harrison and then spoke a few words which expressed his appreciation for the work of the 4-H clubs. He asked if anyone had any questions. Surprisingly, it was fairlyMoequiet.andHarrison then began asking questions they had. Had anyone recently been involved in an exchange program or travelled someplace with 4-H? Some responded that they had recently travelled to Ontario and Moe used this as a springboard to talk about how 4-Hers have a unique opportunity to be ambassadors for this province.Later in the morning, he addressed this again, talking about how Saskatchewan leads the world in sustainable production. He also added that this province’s agricultural business is the cleanest on the planet. And 4-H is a contributor to those distinctions and should talk of those things wherever they go. Moe asked again if there were any questions. Levi Freitag raised his hand. When he was acknowledged, he asked, “Can I have your autograph?” Everyone chuckled over that. Moe said sure and Freitag went up and got his autograph. Levi’s grandmother is a huge fan of Moe and he wanted to get the autograph for her. He had practised asking the question for a week just to make sure he would get it right. Unfortunately for his grandmother, but good for Levi, Moe signed the autograph, personally addressed to Levi. When it became apparent that the children didn’t have any other questions, parents and local council members started asking their own. The meet-and-greet time began to take on a town hall meeting look. Moe used the opportunity to reinforce his personal commitment and that of the Saskatchewan Party for the province’s agricultureHebusiness.mentioned that career agricultural opportunities in Saskatchewan are great. Ninety-eight per cent of agricultural students find jobs in their area of study right here in Saskatchewan upon graduation. Half of those areAtwomen.onepoint, he asked his audience what the government could do for 4-H. When a reply came back that he could provide more funding for 4-H, he responded that because he sees 4-H as an integral part of Saskatchewan’s agricultural economy, his government is the number one funder of theBeforeorganization.wrapping up, he spoke to the 4-H members about how to deal with nervousness when it comes to public speaking. He indicated that he stills gets nervous when he has to stand up and talk before a crowd. He stressed the importance of keeping to the point and using illustrations to drive home that point.
The hour went by quickly. Before leaving, Moe and Harrison posed with the 4-H members and then it was on to his next stop. He left behind many children and adults who were excited about having met their premier in person.

By Paul Kimball Ian, Jo-Anne, Liam and Anna Cushon hosted a day-long tour on their Moose Creek Organic Farm north of Oxbow on July 25. Close to 60 farmers showed up. The farm is about 5,000 acres. Several crops are raised, including flax, wheat, oats, alfalfa seed and hemp. Most who attended, like Bill Armstrong, have been farming organically for a number of years and the day gave him the opportunity to acquire new wisdom in becoming an even more effective farmer. The Cushons have been raising crops organically since 1989 and are very innovative. They’re constantly trying out new ideas to raise better crops, and they’re willing to share their findings with farmers to save them the time and money required for experimenting.GrahamPusch transitioned from conventional farming to organic farming because of concerns he has about the health impact of the chemicals being used. That concern became personal for Pusch. His brother Rod, whom he farmed with, developed cancer shortly after the switch to organic farming and Pusch believes that the cancer resulted from working with chemicals. Rod passed away two years ago. Like Armstrong, Pusch saw the tour as being of great value in becoming a more productiveSeveralfarmer.hadgiven up on traditional farming because they saw an increasing portion of their income going to chemical companies. They, too, wanted to discover how organic farming could become more profitable to them. Organic farming is considerably different than conventional farming. Because chemicals are not used, other means are used for weed control and soil nutrition. This is done naturally, using natural elements like chicken manure and clover to provide the necessary nutrition.Threeattendees came from the University of Manitoba. Martin Entz is a professor, Sarah Wilcott is a research coordinator and Michelle Carkner is working on her PhD in phosphorous use efficiency. They have a vested interest in the Cushon farm as they have research sites in their fields that they monitor closely. Entz was sharing that the difference between conventional farming and organic farming is comparable to the difference between checkers and chess. In checkers, moves are reactionary, on the spur of a moment, where in chess, a player needs to look several moves ahead. The Cushons cannot simply add synthetic fertilizers to add phosphates and nutrients to the soil. They need to give their fields the opportunity to replenish those things naturally and that means that on any given year, up to about 40 per cent of their land is unused for crop, allowing the fields to rejuvenate by letting clover and alfalfa grow and then plowing it down. That is costly, resulting in new ideas being constantly tried out to make the years of planting even more productive. The day was spent taking a bus from field to field to see the results. At each field, Cushon explained what was going on and then a

Alida, SK By Gord Paulley Kelvin Rutten has farmed all his life. Residing 13 kilometres southwest of Carlyle, Rutten, 63, owns and rents 1,900 acres of farmland located in the Rural Municipalities of Moose Mountain and MooseTogetherCreek. with his brother Larry, Rutten started organic grain farming in 1987. This year, he has 700 acres sown to oats, hullless barley, wheat and einkorn wheat. The remaining acres are either hay land, clover, alfalfa or summer fallow. A successful organic grain farmer will continuous crop using very varied and extensive rotations. In June, clover and alfalfa is plowed down which results in an excellent base for next year’sThiscrop.isonly the third year in 35 that Rutten has not planted rye. As well, peas and flax were not sown this year. Instead, he has been experimenting with einkornThiswheat.variety contains gluten and has a higher percentage of protein than modern red wheats. It is considered more nutritional because it also has higher levels of fat, phosphorus, and potassium. It also benefits people that have mild celiac disease.
Wild oats and yellow mustard are the main adversaries of organic grain farmers. Contrary to popular belief, farmers can spray their crops using natural or organic herbicides including sulfur. There are only a handful of organic farmers in the RMs. The operators must be certified and are strictly governed by the Canadian Food and Inspection Agency (CFIA). Rutten belongs to TCO Cert, which is a unique organic certifier because it is made up of member run chapters located across Canada. It is headquartered in Humboldt.Hiscertification number is 005, which shows how long he has been involved in the organic grainOrganicbusiness. fields are inspected annually and there must be a 25-foot “buffer” cultivated between conventional grain lands. For years, Rutten has sold his organic grains mainly through Canadian brokers with most of his products transported to the United States. Rutten loves talking about the organic grain business.“I’ve been farming organically for 35 years and have been happy with the results. Neighbour George Coffey was a mentor to me. Yields are lower than conventional crops because we can’t use fertilizer, but prices are often higher too.
Proud to be part of the agricultural community!
“My inputs are far lower than the average grain farmer and I don’t need any hired help. I do, however, have several friends and relatives that assist me: my stepchildren Corey, Brittney and Greg Wilson and, of course, my 91-year-old neighbour LorneSadly,Luedtke.”Rutten has seen a lot of tragedy in his life. Both brother Larry and sister Cathy died of ALS many years ago. Brother Ron and his family died tragically in an automobile accident over 30 years ago just a couple of kilometres away from his home quarter. He also had two nephews pass away far tooHesoon.was common-law to Sandi Wilson of Redvers for 16 years and she died from cancer in 2015. His three older brothers all halter broke cattle, Michael halter broke chickens,” he said with a Ruttensmile.isan avid reader and is never afraid to ask a question. He enjoys studying alternative medicine practices and likes the odd game of Deepgolf. down, Rutten loves the farm and the rural way of life. Seven women hit the green, including Sarah Brownridge, Sheena Grimes, Shawn Dunn, Skyla Mayert, Lisa Morrison, Carrie Hengen and Tammy BrownridgePetzel.was the sixth golfer through and her shot of eight feet, one inch from the hole stood up all night long as being closest to the pin. Her foursome was the only ones to birdie the hole. Noreen Brady won the longest putt on hole nine. All participants enjoyed the meal after their round. Organizers are looking forward to hosting this popular event again in 2023. Ladies nights are held every Tuesday at the Carlyle Golf Club. Earl Silcox loves to play at the White Bear Lake Golf Course. Photo by Gord Paulley
By Gord Paulley Local resident Earl Silcox and his family have lived at White Bear Lake for decades. Now 86 years old, he enjoys excellent health and has been a fixture at the White Bear Lake Golf Course since it opened back in the late 1980s.For years, he, wife Doreen, daughter Kelly and son Kirby would tee off every Saturday and Sunday at 6:15 a.m. It then changed to 7:15 a.m. and now his regular family tee time is 7:40 a.m.Kirby passed away in 2017 and his weekend foursome also includes longtime friend Clarence Gelowitz.Silcox started golfing late in life. He purchased his first set of golf clubs from Lonnie’s Golf Shop in Regina and played his first golf game in Maple Creek in 1987. He was a great golfer back in his day, at one time sporting an 11 handicap. He now plays from the forward tees and has shot his age or lower on many occasions.During his lifetime, Silcox has had four holes-in-one, three of them at White Bear and one in Arizona. He aced hole No. 2 in 2002, hole No. 8 in 2010, and hole No. 16 in 2020. He has eagled every hole at White Bear except for the par-3 11th. His favourite hole is the par-5 17th.Silcox golfs five or six times a week with Doreen, and Kelly drives down from Regina to join him every weekend. During the week, he plays with Gelowitz and anyone else who needs a partner. He was one of the first to own an electric golf cart at White Bear and now owns two. Silcox golfs the Bear from May to October and then travels and golfs in Arizona for three months every winter. Until recently, Silcox had for years assisted in running the weekly Wednesday men’s nights. He has enjoyed knowing all the clubhouse managers and staff but did want to highlight golf course superintendent Larry Palmer.“Larry is the blood and soul of the White Bear Lake Golf Course,” said Silcox. “He is truly an icon and does not get the credit he deserves. White Bear is in immaculate condition and our family is honoured to be long-time members of this fabulous golf course. Thank-you Larry, for all that you do.”Silcox just simply loves the game of golf. “I like the fresh air, the personal challenge, and developing lifelong friendships along the way. And I can’t forget the regular opportunity of learning the many variances of the English language. Health permitting, I am looking forward to many more years of striking the ball and enjoying the great game of golf.”

By Paul Kimball Carter Beck, Saskatchewan’s U18 AAA MVP, was in Saskatoon recently, where he was able to show the Toronto Blue Jays his baseball abilities.Blue Jays scouting camps take place across Canada. Scouts are specific in what they look for. For non-pitchers, they’re interested in throwing speed and accuracy, running speed and hitting skills. An outfielder, Beck was given two opportunities to field balls and throw them to third base, and two more opportunities to make throws to home plate. All four throws were on theHemoney.rangood times in two 60-yard dashes. One further test allowed Beck to showcase his hitting skills. He faced 20 pitches over two rounds and homered three times. The other 40 players combined for only one homeAlongrun.with what the scouts observed, they received player information from Baseball Sask’s high performance coach Greg Brons. Across Canada, 120 players are being chosen to take the next step, going to Toronto from Sept. 20-24 to be looked at more closely. When the first list of 75 players was released, Beck’s name was on it. In the meantime, he and two other local ball players, Callum Hollinger of Carnduff (baseball) and Raivyn Millions of Oxbow (softball) are in Niagara, representing Saskatchewan in the Canada Summer Games. Make sure to pick up future copies of the Observer to find out how they fared.

By Paul Kimball When Paul Carriere married Pat Audet back in 1956, little did they know how big of a family tree they were about to plant. He is 87 years old and widowed, as his wife Pat passed away in 2011. Carriere is still active, managing Carnduff ’s landfill Recently, site. the family had a reunion at the Merkley farm north of Glen Ewen, and family came from as far away as Chilliwack, B.C. That trip was made by Makenzie Rae, one of Carriere’s granddaughters. The weather was beautiful for the weekend of celebrating family and allowed for a lot of outdoor activities like badminton, bocce ball and water hoses for the kids. Trailers were parked and tents were set up to accommodate the whole family. All the meals were homecooked. The family tree is very large. Paul and Pat had seven children, who in turn gave them 24 grandchildren, who provided 40 great-grandchildren (with two more on the way) and they have contributed throwdren.great-great-grandchil-twoAddtheseupandinthespouses

Paul Carriere loves his large family tree and their reunions
and the result was that there were about 80 mouths to feed that weekend.Thiswas the second time the Carriere family had a reunion. The first came three years ago when it was decided that Paul, the family patriarch, wasn’t getting any younger and that it would be great to enjoy family while everyone was able to. Now the planning for reunion number three begins.

Marchand is the learning support teacher at the Bellegarde school and has also taught in Carlyle. Teaching is Marchand’s full-time job, and she absolutely loves the kids. She feels teaching is not just about the children learning, but also providing support for her students. Marchand is also an artist. She always felt she had the talent and began to paint steadily 12 years ago, when her youngest child was six months old. She paints with her heart, as each piece has a meaning. Marchand feels that art is an excellent way to help with mental health.Roses and peonies are among her favourite flowers to paint, although she does paint an array of other flowers.
Marchand’s pieces can take up to 60 hours to complete, while others may only take eight hours. “It all depends on the piece,” said Marchand. While at the colony, Marchand offered henna tattoos, which turned out to be a big hit with the kids. Along with the tattoos she performed face painting. She had approximately 200 kids take their turns for the tattoos.
Chylisse Marchand loves painting and each piece she paints has a special meaning.
