A couple that has been riding horses across the country recently spent a few days in southeast Saskatchewan from Aug. 23-26.Itwas a beautiful sunny morning in St-Veronique, Que., when Patrick Venne and his partner Dominique Lebel saddled their horses on April 29 and began their cross-Canada journey.Aweek earlier they had a received a snowstorm. Luckily, the weather cleared up and the trip was back on. Venne has long had a childhood dream. He wanted to ride on horseback across Canada. Venne and his childhood friend were 13 years old, and they spoke of it often. As they grew older, life changed. They had to work and had a family, so their dream was put on hold, but Venne never forgot about his dream. Venne and Lebel live off the grid. Venne built a cabin by the river where he hunts and traps. He is also a farrier by trade. Now, with Venne’s children grown, it was time to fulfill his dream. With three horses and their huskie named Buckie joining them, they began to Theirride.horses are extremely well broke and calm, and Buckie is well mannered. They are all shod, vaccinated and have their negative Coggins tests.“We are travelling and don’t want our horses sick,” said Lebel, The weather was great until they reached the Ontario-Quebec border. It was at that time the conditions turned and it was feared they may have a tornado. Their hosts invited them into their home to ride out the storm. As they continued on their journey, one of the horses became lame, so a friend picked her up and brought her home. Through northern Ontario they decided to trailer their horses. Venne and Lebel felt it was too dangerous to ride on the two-lane highway, plus the weather could turn and make it more difficult. They began to ride again when they reached Manitoba. They try to ride three to five hours a day, which is usually about 50 kilometres.Once they arrived in Winnipeg the search for another horse was on. They came across Octane, a seven-year-old Morgan gelding that fit the dream team. The couple were hit with another storm which produced hail. A host’s garage became a welcome shelter.“We had storms that were scary. One caused our tent to nearly blow away and the lightning was intense,” said Lebel. As they rode through Moose Mountain Park, it was 30 degrees C. They rode into Elaine Connaughty’s farm, hoping they would be able to make camp Connaughtythere.lives just north of Kisbey. She offered them a paddock for the horses, a barbequed supper, a shower, and a dry place to stay. “They are the nicest people, and their animals are so well trained and behaved,” Connaughty said. The next morning, they were sent off with April Breault as their next contact. Breault lives east of Stoughton on Highway 13. Breault was also happy to help. She loaded their horses and took them to the Stoughton Rodeo grounds. This way the horses could have the arena to roam. Breault also provided them with hay and water for the equines.

By Gord Paulley Carlyle resident Blaze Dunn was involved in a very serious bicycle accident on Aug. 16. At his home on First Street West, Dunn rode his bike down his driveway onto the street and into the side of a moving half-tonne truck. The accident happened at 5:20 p.m. Blaze’s father Perry rushed him to the Arcola Health Centre. Shortly thereafter, he was returned by ambulance to the Carlyle Airport where he was transported by airplane to the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon. He arrived there at 11 p.m. A five-hour surgery began first thing the nextBlazemorning.broke both his humerus bone and his femur bone. The femur, or thigh bone, was broken in six places and the assortment of screws and a plate will have to be surgically removed in the coming months and years.Blaze was born to Perry and Carole-Lyne Dunn in 2014. He has had several medical issues in his young life and this recent surgery was his fifth. Fortunately for the family, Blaze has been recovering from his accident in record time. The doctors in Saskatoon were astounded at his extremely high pain tolerance.Blaze was permitted to come home under his mother’s supervision one full week ahead of schedule. Prior to moving to Carlyle, Carole-Lyne worked in Ontario for 13 years, providing home care for individuals with disabilities. The Dunns had nothing but praise for the Saskatchewan healthcare system and the quality of its pediatrics program.“Thecare and attention we received at the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon was fantastic,” said Carole-Lyne. “The doctors and staff were top notch and second to none. Blaze, Perry and I are very thankful for the excellent care we received.”“Weare also grateful for the prompt attention we received at the Arcola Health Centre. The two ambulance attendants that drove from Wawota were exceptional,” added ThePerry.Dunns were also thankful that Blaze was riding his bicycle with his helmet “Withouton. the helmet, doctors advised us that Blaze could have incurred a traumatic head injury, resulting in either permanent disability or even death. We were extremely fortunate,” said Carole-Lyne. While Blaze started Grade 3 this week in a wheelchair, he has a very upbeat and positive attitude. He has many friends who just gravitate towards him and his personality. His parents feel that he is a born leader in the making. Blaze blames only himself for the accident. He offered this safety tip to all his school friends and to everyone in general.“When riding your bike, stop, look both ways, and have your helmet on. Play safe and stay safe,” he said.

Kirhofer sang for the first time in front of a crowd in 2014 and it just snowballed from there. He often sings at the nursing home in Carlyle. With his love for Christian music, he also leads the service at the Railway Avenue Mission in Kisbey, where he often performs live.
By Stephanie Zoer Kisbey’s Music in the Park had all ages gathered together to listen to music performed by three acts.

David and Krista Meisner organized the musical event, held on Aug. 28 at the Kisbey Recreational Park. The Meisners felt it was important to reach out to the Kisbey community as there are new families in town and seniors love the music.“It is a great way to share God’s message and show God’s love,” said Krista. This is the first year for the Music in the Park. Approximately 70 people enjoyed the music by Curtis and Bonnie Szakacs and family, Timothy Kirhofer and Troy MacNaughton.Themusic and songs were Christian-based and could be heard throughout the Whilepark.people brought their own lawn chairs, they could sit under the canopies out of the hot sun. Byelection may prove to be a test
Saskatoon Meewasin is a city seat last held by former NDP leader Ryan Meili. Notwithstanding Meili’s struggles to hold the seat in the 2020 general election (a seat he easily won with 54 per cent of the vote in a March 2017 byelection a year before he became NDP leader), this is NDP country. In fact, in the 55 years since 1967, this area of Saskatoon has had an NDP MLA for all but 15 years.Asfor any momentum that would be created by NDP candidate Nathaniel Teed winning, it should be noted that during the last term, the NDP was on a roll with three consecutive byelection wins in city seats before losing three consecutive rural byelections and producing the same results in the 2020 general election as the elections in 2011 and 2016.The greatest predictor of a byelection is who last held the seat, although they do sometimes say something about the current political climate. In the last two elections in Meewasin, it was an all-out Sask. Party effort to keep Meili out of the Saskatchewan legislature. With all due respect to Sask. Party candidate Kim Groff — a local businessman who unsuccessfully ran for the party in Saskatoon Centre in 2020 — there were rumoured to be other preferred candidates for the party like former riding candidate Rylund Hunter or Saskatchewan real estate CEO Chris Guerette, who also ran for the party in 2020.

Everyone should bring manners to work
- Aphra Behn AUDITED By Murray Mandryk

Travelers know to prepare for numerous construction signs when they hit the road in warm weather months, but this summer “Now Hiring” signs vastly outnumbered any other type of sign in places my husband and I travelled. Everybody was hiring. Retail. Fast food. Manufacturing. Hotels. Construction companies. Insurance agencies. Health care facilities. We saw all kinds of banners, billboards and notices taped to doors detailing starting salary, perks and opportunities forApromotion.surveyof Canadian businesses found that one in four employers felt they had to hire someone they normally wouldn’t, simply due to the shortage of workers. Another study found that of the 64 per cent of places trying to hire, 91 per cent were unable to doSomeso. places are raising wages, providing signing bonuses or encouraging people to come out of retirement. But the seismic shift coming out of the pandemic has changed the employment picture drastically. Turnover is high in some sectors as people use this opportunity to search for greener Hugepastures.numbers have taken early retirement, foreseen in some industries, surprising in others. Some have not returned to full-time work for one reason or another. The employee pool simply isn’t as big as needed and the crunch is being felt. The first Friday of September is called Bring Your Manners to Work Day, a day encouraging positive interactions with bosses, colleagues and clients so the workplace can be a good environment for all. To be sure, employees need to bring a good set of manners to their work to create a healthy workplace.Butperhaps we also need a day (or 365 of them) reminding clients, customers and the general public that they need to bring manners, too. Because how are we going to fill employment vacancies in industries where individuals are increasingly subjected to poor treatment by the very people they are trying to serve?

That said, there is added interest in this byelection largely because oF outside political forces that may be having an effect on this province’s two major political parties. Besides Teed and Groff, also running in this Meewasin byelection are Liberal leader Jeff Walters and former People’s Party of Canada candidate and anti-vaccine crusader Mark Friesen, who is running for the Buffalo WaltersParty.ishardly known outside social media circles. Also, the Liberals only ran three candidates in 2020 who garnered less than 400 votes combined. Walters may be hard-pressed to get the 180 votes last Liberal leader Darrin Lamoureux received in the 2017 Meewawsin byelection.

To suggest the Sept. 26 Saskatoon Meewasin byelection is a huge test for the Saskatchewan Party government is overstating matters. History tells us that when it comes to a byelection being a predictor of the next general election, it’s about as accurate as a coin flip.

Obviously, a traditional NDP city seat isn’t likely to elect a rabid right-winger like Friesen. But if Friesen does put in a strong showing, it may be telling for the Sask. Party. Similarly, if Teed exceeds expectations, this also may say something about how Moe has frustrated many.
Walters is running from the left and the left is unhappy with the way new leader Carla Beck has been positioning the NDP more towards the centre. If Walters does do better than expected, it might be a sign that the NDP has problems on its left flank. It likely hasn’t escaped your attention how much time in the past two years Moe has spent catering to the right by endorsing the e fforts of the Freedom Convoy and meeting with anti-vaxxers like Nadine Ness. Much of this has to do with not wanting to yield that vast anti-Trudeau network to anyone else on the right, which might explain why Moe and his government persists in insisting that there is some massive trespassing scandal in federal workers taking water samples to test for pesticide levels.
As such, this might be one byelection that tells us more than byelections usually do.
“Faith, sir, we are here today, and gone tomorrow.”

We were at a restaurant that had a nowfamiliar hiring sign on the front door as well as a notice inside apologizing for wait times. That should have been indication enough, shouldn’t it? A woman peered into the dining room and exclaimed there were empty tables, and demanded she and her party be seated.Thehost told her that, yes, there were empty tables but they didn’t have the staff needed to take care of them all. This was unacceptable so she turned on her heel and walked out, party in tow, announcing she would find somewhere else to go. I guess she hadn’t yet realized it was the same everywhere else in the region.Several times we saw customers speaking harshly to staff. My heart went out to them. How many customers had spoken to them the same way that day? That week? This summer? A recent medical situation required a trip to the emergency department for someone in my family. We’ve all heard the stories. Long wait times in the ER. Tensions building. Frustrations taken out on the medical staff – the very people we need to take care of us. I saw it all. I also saw the staff respond gently and professionally. I couldn’t help but wonder how someone shows up for work each day knowing what likely awaits them. Is it okay to advocate for what you are paying for? To expect a good level of service? Of course. But the way insults are being hurled, profane language tossed about and the personal attacks levelled at someone simply trying to do their job is further damaging an already stretched staff everywhere.Asemployees are reminded to bring their best manners to work, perhaps the rest of us could follow suit. It can make a difference. In every store, restaurant and attraction we were in, we encountered hardworking, earnest people and tremendous service. It’s pretty cool what happens when you treat someone with respect and politeness. It usually comes right back to you. Amazing how that works.Aswe grapple with trying to get enough people on the job to meet the needs of the population, it is good to take a moment and remind all in the workplace that poor behaviour is just bad for business. But what also needs to be remembered is that bad manners are a bad look on all of us. If we want to attract the best, let’s treat them with respect. That’s my outlook.

By Gord Paulley Local hairstylist Marsha McLean will celebrate 50 years in the industry in Carlyle on Sept.Growing2. up in North Portal, McLean completed her high school in Estevan and graduated in 1972. From Grades 10-12, she was able to complete the 1,400-hour cosmetology program while also attaining her Grade 12. Ed Brittin was her cosmetology teacher and continued to mentor her for years after, which she is forever grateful for.McLean started working in 1972 for Marilyn Ast, who owned and operated Cut n Curl in Carlyle. McLean decided to move to Carlyle as she knew the area, having worked at Kenosee Lake during her high school summers.TheCut n Curl business was purchased by McLean in 1974 and operated in the Wayling Block, which is now the Affinity Credit Union building. She moved to 206 Main Street in 1983, where the old government liquor store had been. Her first employee was Joy McLeanJordan.has employed and mentored many hairstylists over the years. The pandemic changed people in a lot of ways. People dress and look a lot more casual. Many of the baby boomers have quit colouring their hair. There are not as many special events happening. All of this means less frequent visits to the salon.Geiger became a coowner of Cut n Curl in 2011. She bought out McLean in 2016 and then renamed her business Salon 206. McLean is still employed by Geiger on a part-time basis.“It’s been a privilege to work alongside Marsha for 17 of the 50 years she’s been in this industry,” said Geiger. “I truly admire her passion and excitement she still has every day. She has a huge heart and I have learned she is a big marshmallow. I am so thankful for all she has taught me over the years. We all learn from each other and with the trends ever changing it is so great to work beside someone who has so much knowledge. “I’m sure having someone walk in and take your business over hasn’t been easy, but she has always supported me. I will forever be thankful for the opportunity Marsha has given me. If she hadn’t reached out to me 17 years ago, I would not be where I am today. I wish her nothing but the best, and I hope she continues to keep doing what she loves.”McLean and her husband David have three children – Kim, Brent and Michele, who were born in the 1980s – and three grandchildren, Rogan, Renner and Raine. McLean has many interests outside of work and family. The centre’s main demographic is ages zero to five, but they offer different kinds of events for other age categories as well. For their main patrons, they have a pre-K program on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-3 p.m., and a drop-in program, which is free and takes place Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30-11:30 a.m. “Our doors are open those days for patrons, and then we have lots of sign-up programs in afternoons and evenings that you’ll find on [the Expressway Family Centre] Facebook page or in our three months calendar that can be picked up at the centre as well,” MorrowForsaid.the drop-in program, the centre invites guest speakers, offers different crafts, helps kids learn about different arts and, of course, lets patrons play in their sensory room. The pre-K program will mainly take place in the classroom at the centre, but kids will also have opportunities to have fun with all the new equipment. The programming is set to start after the Labour Day long weekend. People can register through their FacebookMackenziepage. Valentine, interim program co-ordinator/preschool teacher with the centre, said the new building will allow for more activities for their“We’vepatrons.knocked down a wall to make one big classroom, so we’ll have lots of room for them this year,” Valentine said. Now that they have the space, they will also be able to host bigger events for a broader audience. “In September, we’re doing a Collage Night [for all ages], and in October, we’re doing a Bread Class [for adults only],” Valentine said, adding that now they are able to offer programming for all age groups from newborns to adults. The centre also hopes to run a Halloween Spooktacular event the weekend before Halloween. The day of the re-opening included a ribboncutting ceremony, cake and refreshments, tours of the place, as well as indoor crafts and outdoor games for the kids. The centre also unveiled their new sign, which was created with the help of the community earlier in the year. People were invited to send in their designs, and one would get chosen as the new logo. Reid Barnes, son of the centre’s program co-ordinator Stephanie Barnes, designed the winning sign with his mother. “We had a logo, and we revamped it this year. We had a contest back in April and May to submit ideas. And then we did a silent vote on which one we liked the best. So now we have a new logo,” MorrowTheshared.new location also has a backyard space, which they hope to develop more for the next summer.“Anoutdoor space for patrons will be awesome,” MorrowRenovatingsaid. the new location for the not-forprofit, which operates on grants and fundraising, became possible thanks to many volunteers, mainly board members and their spouses. Stephanie’s husband Dylan Barnes was a “huge asset”, Morrow said.“He just knows how important the organization is to the community, so he did a ton of work for us.”Valentine added that many people donated needed items to the centre. And they had some professional help with renovations where it was required.TheExpressway Family Centre is now located at 408 Main Street in Oxbow, and in November it will celebrate 22 years in operation.

Morrow, Expressway Family Centre president, said that after several moves and a few years of being in smaller places, the board was happy to find a new home, which was also a separate standing building on Main Street. They got possession of the building, which used to be a house, at the end of April, and from then until the grand re-opening, they were renovating the place to make it work for the family centre’s needs. “We basically redid every room in the building except the kitchen for the most part. We upgraded the electrical, which was a huge financial undertaking. We took out the tub that was in the washroom to make room for a changing table for moms that bring their littles. We took out a wall between two bedrooms to make our classroom larger. We redid the flooring throughout. And in our main play area, we took another wall out there to open the entryway and have more space for play,” Morrow said.Outside structural renovations, the centre also put a lot of work into developing the play and learning areas for their patrons.“The really exciting room that we’ve put into place is the sensory room. We had Ane Warnich come in and do some artwork for us, so the wall is covered in all sorts of tactile things that the kids can touch and play with. And we put up a small jungle gym in the sensory room with a Tarzan-type rope and some monkey bars. It’s quite neat for our super active kids that need an energy outlet,” Morrow shared.

Due to an ongoing medical problem I was hospitalized for four days coming home on Monday. The following day, I won twice at card Bingo along with several others.
The Maryfield German Mennonite Church group came again and we spent another enjoyable musical evening. Thank you for coming; it’s always enjoyable.Wednesday we had our usual sing along with Mary on guitar and Thursday was card Bingo again. Exercises keep us in shape on Fridays with Marlee.Sunday evening we had the Kola EMC group come to enjoy an hour of singing, worshipping and visiting. It was so nice. We have a new resident to welcome. We hope this person enjoys their stay here.

Arrangements are pending. Aug. 28 was the last day of fun at the Alida Swimming Pool. They had lots of fun games, treats, hot dogs and movies planned, but the weatherman didn’t co-operate. There was a small crowd on hand to enjoy the festivities, eat hot dogs and to say good bye to the swimming pool for another year. Back to school for students and staff on Sept. 1. Good luck to everyone this school year.

Darlene Olsen is not new to helping out people. She has been holding the Creative Tables for Cancer fundraiser in Arcola since 2008.Creative Tables is a fundraiser which helps women who are going through cancer treatment or have just completedOncetreatment.amonth, a workshop is held to help these women; it is called Look Good, Feel Better. When COVID-19 shut events down, the Creative Table event could not be held, but Olsen felt the need to do something.Olsen decided to shave her head for cancer. Ten other volunteers joined her. It proved to be successful, but not something that Olsen wanted to do again. In 2021, it was decided to do a walk/run/ ride event. Participants could go five, 10, 15 or 22 kilometres. There are no prizes or placings, just the satisfaction that one had completing the race.On Aug. 14, the second annual walk/ run/ride marathon was held in Arcola. This year 13 kids took part in the event. A 600-meter mini marathon was set up. Although the kids could go at any speed they liked, they all chose to race to the“Theend. kids were incredible,” Olsen said. No prizes were given for placings, but the kids were asked to collect a minimum of $50 in donations to sign up. Thirty-five adults signed up this year for theThemarathon.weather was perfect, at 26 C and the sun shining all day. Last year it was extremely hot, so they were grateful for the great weather. “This is a fun event. It is not who comes in first or last, but that everyone has a chance to complete the marathon,” said Olsen. “This event could not happen without all the volunteers or the donations that we receive, like the bottled water. It is the participants that raise the money, and we areThethankful.”event raised $10,000 through the determination of all that took part in this marathon.
Congratulations to Mari Lemieux who has now become Alida’s young author at the age of 16, as she had her book The Sock Momster published, and it’s available at the 361 Café. Great story Mari and keep them riebestCongratulationscoming.andwishestoLoganBar-andChristinaGervais who were married Aug. 19. An outdoor wedding was held in their yard on the Wood Mountain Reserve. It was a beautiful ceremony with three bridesmaids and three groomsmen, and their two sons, Lincoln and Bentley, as ring bearers. There was approximately 90 people in attendance and the reception was held at the band hall. A bonfire and dance were then held back at the young couple’s residence.
Eager participants took part in the annual walk/run/ride event in Arcola on Aug. 14.

“It was nice to be able to hold this event locally and not travel miles and miles for this annual softball tournament. I’m so grateful for everyone that helped, a huge thank you to Morley Watson of Ochapowace for running the draw and lining up the umpires. To Ken Thomas, for all his guidance and assistance.
“A big thank you to FSIN for taking the time to review and approve our proposal allowing the community of White Bear to host this event. Thank you to the Carlyle District Lions Club and the Town of Carlyle for providing the venue. And a final big thank you to everyone who was involved this past weekend, to come together and make this event happen in such a short time frame. “One day, we would love to see the FSIN Summer/Winter games in White Bear, bringing together all nations showcasing our athletes, volunteers and organizers.”

This past week, the Town of Carlyle warmly welcomed Genco Asphalt of Estevan to its streets. Crews were busy for nearly a week repaving various areas around town. Sebastian McClement is the project manager.“Wewere pleased to be able to be hired on by the Town of Carlyle and Carlyle Lions Pride. We repaved 2 1/2 blocks of streets for the town and paved the lot of the newly built Southern Plains Coop liquor store. We also repaved the entire circle of Lions Pride and several of their driveways. We had great weather and the jobs were completed on time,” said McClement. Genco has two asphalt plants, one in Estevan and one in Kisbey. The plant in Kisbey was used due to its closer proximity to Carlyle.Frank Faber is the chairman of Lions Pride Estates.“We were happy to have hired Genco and they did a great job. The crew was professional, and the finished product looks“Wegreat.”have been looking at repaving the circle and several driveways for three or four years now and it is nice to have the repaving done,” added George Anderson, who is the president of the Lions Pride Tenant’s Association. “I am confident that our tenants will be completely satisfied.” Alice Savill is one of those tenants. “I am very pleased with the new pavement,” she said. “The paving crew was very polite and did a fine job in such a short amount of time. We were barely inconvenienced. Lions Pride looks great, and I am happy I live here.”

Guenter and Justin Black were married this past summer in an outside ceremony at Sandy Lake, Man. Rheanna is the daughter of Maureen Jensen and Steve Guenter and the granddaughter of Marie Jensen. Justin is the son of Tom Black and Linda Benner and grandson of Edna Benner. Valerie Puskas, Edna Benner and Jean Miller travelled together and spent the weekend at the Sandy Lake Motel and Campground. Justin and Rheanna reside in Carberry, Man. On Aug. 14, Pukas and Marie Jensen travelled to Carberry for a family dinner with Steve Guenter and Maureen Jensen. Marie visited with four of her granddaughters and great-granddaughters.threeThe final meeting of the Heritage Committee was held at the Village Inn on Aug. 29. Overall it was a great day, beautiful weather and good attendance. The gymkhana and children’s events were busy and the fireworks and cabaret were enjoyed. I was part of the committee and appreciated the eight other members who each worked hard in their areas to produce a firstclassHappyevent.85th birthday to my sister, Nola Mowbray on Sept. 1.

The family of Thomas Wesley Busby is saddened to announce the passing of Tom on Friday, August 26, 2022 at the Regina General Hospital, Regina, SK at the age of 74 years. Tom had a passion for animals, the outdoors and sharing his opinion (whether you wanted to hear it or not). He wasn’t a man to share his feelings, but he showed his love for family by working hard and giving advice. He valued honesty and dependability above anything and would always show up when you needed him. He may have added a few “I told you so’s” but he would still help for whatever mess we had created.
Tom always had a coffee on for friends, a story to tell, and a twinkle in his eye while he cracked a joke or slipped a sly little comment in. We will forever miss him and are forever grateful for out time withTomhim.is survived by his daughter Gayla (Leon) Gilbertson and her children, Remy, Lexy, Ryder, Aiden and Ella; son Ross (Kiesha) and children, Elexia, Kyler and Brynlee; as well as one sister Carol Carter. Tom was predeceased by his loving wife Freda and parents, Verna and Burton Busby. A Private Service will be held at a later date. “The Last Goodbye is the hardest one to make, this is where the cowboy rides away” If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Estevan Wildlife Federation, Box 105, Estevan, SK S4A 2A2 in memory of Tom. Hall Funeral Services in Estevan is caring for Tom’s familyYvonne Clark, Funeral Director.

Tom was a loving and loyal husband to Freda staying by her side everyday from the time they met until her passing. He first became a Dad by choosing to accept Gayla as his own when him and Freda married in 1991. They challenged each other and thrived in the back and forth. He always taught her “If you fall get right back on” and she has taken that with her every day of her life. For his son, Ross, Tom worked everyday to be an example of what a good man was. Dependable, honest, and strong he exceeded in this in doing and so raised a man that was more like him than either one will admit.

There was excitement amongst the residents at the Stoughton Pioneer Lodge on Aug. 28, as they enjoyed the Country Fair. The weather was not the greatest. It was cool and windy and then the rain came down, but the residents refused to allow a little rain to ruin their afternoon.RuthKlatt, the organizer of the Country Fair, debated about cancelling the event, but decided to go ahead as rescheduling takes a great deal of organizing and everyone was well on their way with the animals. Luckily, the rain did not last and the afternoon was a success. Klatt began the Country Fair to bring the farm to the residents, as many of them are retired farmers, and this was a way she could deliver a farming experience, even if it was only for a short while. This is the third time for this event, and although the crowd was smaller this year, it was a fun time. Anyone was welcome to bring their well-mannered pet to the fair. Klatt brought her two terriers. John and Terri Palmer entertained the residents with a young duck and his friend the Guinee hen. A rooster and chickens were also among the critters. Two goats were part of the herd.Courtney Dickie came with her 10-week-old kittens, which enjoyed the cuddles from the residents.LesGriffin brought Joanie the cockatoo. She is very laid back and enjoyed the rides on the resident’s shoulders.Jeremy and Rhonda Garling came with two ponies, two goats and baby bunnies. One goat is a bottle baby who thinks he should be on people’s laps. After residents and visitors received refreshments, the animals once again returned home. Klatt hopes to continue with the Country Fair, but also hopes more kids will take part in the event. The residents love kids and animals, and it is a way to give back to the committee.
Jacqui Beckett is a full-time artist who also loves pottery.

Jacqui Beckett was a teacher for 32 years. When she retired, her art became her full-time job, and she displays it at the Artist Colony of Moose Mountain Provincial Park. She was born and raised near Moosomin and then moved to Saskatoon to get her education degree.Beckett and her husband Gary moved back to the Moosomin area to farm cattle and bison, and to raise their three daughters, Aimee, Kari and Breanne.Theycontinued to farm while Beckett continued with her teaching career. After teaching, the time came for her to retire. She loved her teaching job, so the last two years, she taught every other day to ease her way into retirement.Beckett always loved art and her first inspiration for art came from her Grade 3 teacher Marion Donald.Once retired, Beckett began to attend workshops and art classes, mostly from local artists. While Beckett continues to take classes, she teaches others the beauty of art.Beckett’s art is designed in silk painting, acrylic, Indian ink resist, watercolour batik and pottery. She works from photo references and draws out her design on paper or canvas. Belonging to the Hamiota Art Club of Manitoba, Beckett meets weekly with other artists at a beautiful historical building to work on art and share ideas withBeckettothers. also creates chalk pastel art. She will draw on fine grit black automotive sandpaper. She chooses four values of colour from light to dark. Working only with these colours, the entire painting is done. Once dry, other colours may be added on Buttop.right now her passion is pottery. This began three years ago, and she absolutely became hooked. Beckett belongs to the Estevan Pottery Club. She displays these pieces at the colony along with her paintings. Her talent has been passed down to her daughters. They also enjoy painting, drawing and mosaic art. Beckett’s grandchildren also have the artist bug. Being one of the Kenosee Lake Retreat committee members, she plans to be there daily, and hopes to return to the Artist Colony next year.
