Christmas of the past fondly remembered Christmas of the remembered
Edgerton Milligan
I was raised in the Arcola area, and I have a fond memory of Christmas.
I remember one time very well. I was around the age of six and I was not a particularly good little boy. My mother told me that if I continued to be a bad boy, Santa would not be coming to our house that night and leaving gifts. I sure changed my attitude quickly and tried extremely hard to stay awake so I could see Santa, but I just could not.
The next morning, I saw the gifts under the tree and was happy I had been good the rest of the night.
I live here now at the New Hope Pioneer Lodge, and I remember my parents being so kind. They always had a large meal with all the trimmings. My mother made many of our gifts as she was a seamstress. My dad worked at the pool agency and would bring home scraps of wood and make little items from them for us for Christmas. It was always a wonderful time when my aunts, uncles, and cousins came over for Christmas
dinner. We would play games and the older people would talk.
I remember all my siblings and parents having our special Christmas dinner. We always had a big turkey because we had nine people in our family. The food always smelled so good. My mom always made a lot, and the table was filled with bowls and pans.
Most of the food came from our garden and from our farm. Sometimes other people would quickly visit, and they would stay for dinner as well. It was fun.
I worked at this lodge when it was being built when I was younger. I loved to socialize, it was always the best and now I just have the memories as most of them are gone. I remember the excellent meal my mother would make and how good it smelled and tasted, and she always made a lot in case the family would drop in. I have always lived in the Stoughton area, and I am grateful for all the visitors I receive.
Light up the world... it’s Christmas!
All the halls are decked and bright With candles, wreaths and strings of light. The tree is trimmed, and snow is falling; the windows glow, and friends come calling to spread good wishes, and to say, “Merry Christmas to all - have a great holiday!”

Christmas of the past fondly remembered Christmas of the remembered
Inga Hill
In the winter I reside in Stoughton and come summer I live out on my farm.
My memory comes from grade school where I attended school in Hudmore. The teachers always had a Christmas concert and all the kids at my school, and in every class, took part in the pageant. We would all sing and our parents would come out and watch us. Santa would arrive when the event was over.
At one time, all 10 of us siblings attended Hudmore School. It is a great memory.
Dellan and Donna Mohrbutter
My name is Dellan Mohrbutter, and one of my memories of Christmas was the excitement of receiving a present from Santa at the school Christmas concert. I looked up to thank Santa and stared right into my brother’s eyes.
My name is Donna Mohrbutter, I am married to Dellan and my fondest memory of Christmas is when my dad bought my brother and me BB pellet guns for Christmas.
I live in Alameda, but I grew up in the Glen Ewen area.
My fondest memories of Christmas are the family gatherings. My grandparents hosted the traditional dinner with all my aunts, uncles and cousins. It was such a great family event, and I looked forward to it every year.
I remember the house being filled with the great smell of the meal and hearing the chattering and laughter from all my relatives.

Merry Christmas!
Treasured Christmas memories
By Shirley McCarron of Heritage Court
As a child, I had many memorable Christmases with all my aunts, uncles and cousins.
As a mother of two little girls, we lived in Manor but Christmas was always in Arcola at my parents. I (Santa) would shop like crazy and leave everything at mom and dad’s.
In 1975, the girls were two and three. Woke up to a storm, off to catch the Greyhound, girls bundled and on a toboggan. Ever try and keep two beach balls on a toboggan?
We made it to Arcola but dad’s yard was blown in. The Greyhound bus driver let us off on the highway. Again they kept rolling off the toboggan. I was at my wits’ end. I grabbed Jodi and carried her to the house, then went back for Jacqui who I had left laying in a snow bank.
I thought I was doing the right thing getting them to spend Christmas with grandpa, grandma and my siblings.
