SCRC back in action Kelly Running Observer Staff

In 2007 the Southeast Cornerstone Racing Circuit was established. It has grown over the years from a starter series to being a culture of racing in the southeast that caters to beginners all the way up to seasoned veterans.

This year sees Kate Lees as President, Ronald Himmelspeck as Vice President, Trevor Branvold as Treasurer, Jasmine Gelowitz as Secretary, and Michael Tomolak as the Race Day Coordinator.

Races this year are already underway with the first one being held in Oxbow on May 20. The next action is in Assiniboia on June 24, followed by action in Carlyle on July 7, Estevan on July 28, Oxbow on Aug. 26, Weyburn on Sept. 8, and it finishes up with a race day in Carlyle on Sept. 15.

Registration begins at 7a.m. and is open for an hour. A quick rider’s meeting is held at 8:30 a.m. followed by practices at 9 a.m. Moto One follows 20 minutes after practice and Moto Two is held 30-45 minutes following the first heats.

Membership for the SCRC, which includes a CMA membership, is $50. Membership files can be found at https://scrcmx.com/memberships.

Classes raced include A Class, B Class, C Class, Vet Class, Youth Class, Two Stroke Class, Women’s Class, Supermini, 85cc, 65cc, 50cc, and Small Wheel Beginner Class.

Points from each race are awarded with 25 points going to first, 22 points to second, 20 points for third, 18 points for fourth, 16 points for fifth, and points are reduced by one through 20th place.

These points are added up at the end of the season to determine season winners, while plaques are also awarded on race days.

Carlyle races are set for July 7 and Sept. 15. Other communities that host events within the SCRC are Oxbow, Assiniboia, Estevan, and Weyburn.

South East Regional 4-H Public Speaking on March 18 Hosted by District #41 and held at the Oxbow Prairie Horizons School in Oxbow, Sask.

4-H Public Speaking is an annual event that all 4-H members must participate in to be able to complete their 4-H year. Although it can be intimidating speaking in front of others, it can also be rewarding.

On March 18th, 2018, 34 speakers traveled from Districts 1, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 37, 39, 41 to compete against each other. It was a highly entertaining afternoon,

as approximately 120 family members and judges listened to the members recite a speech on a topic of their choosing. 12 judges traveled from Estevan, Arcola, Alameda, Oxbow, Carnduff and Carievale and they all had a very difficult decision to make in each of the age categories, but in the end, all of the speakers were worthy winners. There was a first and a second place member in each category chosen, and they earned the right to represent

our region at Provincial Public Speaking on April 7, 2018, in Melville SK. Every speaker was presented with a medal for their efforts.

There were 32 speakers from the Cloverbud, Junior, Intermediate and Senior categories.

Weekly RCMP report Kelly Running Observer Staff

Members of the Carlyle RCMP attended a variety of calls through Thursday, May 17, to Thursday morning, May 24.

911 calls There were two 911

calls received: members were unable to locate the individual or cellphone of the first call and the second was a static line.

Assistance There was a report of someone broken down on the side of the road and were potentially in distress. RCMP attended and gave the individual a ride home.

Cattle escaped from a pasture. It was reported to RCMP, but

they were unable to locate the cattle. The complainant called back to say they had found their cattle and returned them to the pasture.

An individual fled from members while handcuffed. An off-duty Estevan Police Services officer assisted in the apprehension of the individual.

A cellphone was reported as lost to the detachment.

Two Mental Health Act files were looked into during this time.

A wounded fox was reported and members attended. The fox was beyond saving and RCMP dispatched the fox.

Assault There was an assault in the Carlyle area, but there were no charges laid.

An individual was arrested, but not charged

at Kenosee Lake.

Charges were laid for an assault in Carlyle.

There was a sexual assault reported.

Break and enter There was a break and enter at the Manor Hall, but it didn’t appear that anything was damaged or stolen from the building.

Two cottages at Kenosee Lake were broken into.

False alarm

There was an alarm issue at the Royal Bank in Carlyle. Members entered to ensure all was well. The door deadbolted when members left and local individuals do not have the key to the deadbolt, which is why the bank was closed on May 21.

A second false alarm in Redvers was attended to.

From Page 6 - RCMP report Alcohol related offences There was a report of someone consuming alcohol contrary to their conditions. Members looked into the report, but no charges developed.

An impaired driver was reported and patrols were made. The vehicle was stopped, but the driver was not impaired.

There was an impaired driver reported.

Members located the vehicle, but there were no occupants in it.

An impaired driver was stopped on Hwy 9 and blew samples of 190 mg and 180 mg.

There was another impaired driver arrested. They blew samples of 100 mg and 90 mg.

Two intoxicated people were seen staggering around Carlyle, but members were unable to locate them.

Seven tickets for open liquor in a vehicle were issued - $360 each.

A warning for having alcohol in a vehicle was issued.

A ticket for $250 was issued for consuming liquor in a place other than a private

place.

At Kenosee Lake a door was partially burned and ashes were on the step.

Disturbing the peace Campers were reported for being too noisy in the Carlyle area and members issued liquor tickets.

Traffic infractions There was a hit and run reported in Redvers.

There was a minor traffic collision when an individual mistook the gas for the brake.

A $100 ticket was issued for failing to display their licence plate.

Two individuals had no insurance – $580.

Two people failed to produce their registration upon the request of police officers - $100.

An individual was given a warning for not having insurance on their trailer.

There was an individual stopped for having unsecure cargo.

They were fined $175 and given a ticket for $580 for not having insurance.

Seven intersection related tickets were issued - $230.

Speeders were stopped in the area.

There were high tickets of $200, $208, and a potentially record high in the area of $742.

There were warnings given out for speeding as well.

An individual was stopped and given a ticket for $175 for not wearing a seatbelt.

A vehicle was reported for being all over the road. RCMP located them and stopped them determining the strong winds were a factor.

There was a report of a semi all over the road near Wauchope.

Go Golden Knights

As an Avalanche fan, I was quite pleased to see they made it in with a Wild Card slot and that they gave Nashville a pretty good run, but I knew they weren’t making it all the way.

Within the NHL this year, there’s a fairy tale story unfolding with the Las Vegas Golden Knights going from noKelly Running body’s to the Stanley Cup Final Observer Staff where they will be taking on the Washington Capitals.

It’s impressive to take a team that hasn’t played together before that far. Being an expansion team they began picking up free agents and were afforded the opportunity to select players through the NHL Expansion Draft – where they acquired players like Marc-Andre Fleury from the Pittsburgh Penguins (who has been on fire between the posts for the Knights) – and James Neal – a winger from the Nashville Predators.

They also developed farm team relationships with the Chicago Wolves in the American Hockey League and the Quad City Mallards of the East Coast Hockey League.

Being that they were all experienced players – whether free agents, acquired in the Expansion Draft, or pickups from farm teams – they knew their positions and had skills… it was just a matter of chemistry really, which can be one of the most difficult things to develop in a team I find from a coaching perspective. Teaching skills and systems are easy, but having things mesh between different personalities and understanding the “team first” mentality – which may see one person with less playing time than they expected.

Looking at the line-up though… it might be a team out of Las Vegas, but out of the 34 players on the roster 20 are Canadians… whereas the Capitals only have eight Canadians off their roster, which means I’m cheering for Vegas to win in the Stanley Cup Final.

Besides… Cody Eakin, who I remember watching play for the Swift Current Broncos – my WHL team of choice being from southwest Saskatchewan originally, plays for them, so I feel as though I might as well cheer for them.

I also like a good underdog story and although they don’t look like underdogs on the ice, in all intents and purposes that was what they were heading into the season.

They don’t have the big, big names like Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin, Patrick Kane, Carey Price, Jonathon Toews, Connor McDavid, etc…

They do have Marc-Andre Fleury, who was integral in last season’s Stanley Cup victory by taking the team to the Final after Matt Murray became injured during warm-ups in Game 1 of the playoffs against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Then with Murray back and one bad game against the Ottawa Senators, the starter position was flipped. Although it was his third Stanley Cup win, the switch, without an opportunity to start again in the following series, looked like he was on the way out.

However, he has definitely proven that he’s definitely not on the way out, as his first game with the Golden Knights against the Dallas Stars saw him stop 45 out of 46 shots taken on him leading to a 2-1 victory.

Everyone on the team seemed to have been given the opportunity to play their game and instead of one or two names standing out, it’s a group of solid players that are working well together. And if I were to make a prediction, I’m going to say Vegas will take the cup in the end.

Don’t trifle with the trivial I was searching for a copy of meeting minutes from a community group I work with when I clicked on the correct date but the wrong year. What came up caused me to take a second look because amongst the list of those present at the meeting were two names I didn’t initially recognize. I’ve been on this committee for a number of My Outlook years so I questioned how it could Shelley Luedtke be that I did not know these people. I started reading the document and could not believe the first item. It stated that since the secretary was leaving the following morning and would be gone a few days, she asked Shelley to be the recording secretary. Me. I took the minutes! One of the items I included indicated that promotional items were available from the head office including bookmarks, balloons and maracas.

Bookmarks, balloons and maracas? How could I have no memory of this?

Our ability to recall information is a function of several things but at its core is the encoding, storage and retrieval of data with a key component being the perceived impact on our life. The more we believe we will need the information in the future the greater the chance we will take note of it. Yet some people are quite adept at recalling information on practically any topic.

I am a big fan of trivia games and have spent many happy hours attempting questions. As opposed to games where you have to be able to draw and few people are willing to play on a team with me, when it comes to trivia I am considered more of an asset than a liability. For some reason I retain rather inconsequential and decidedly weird information and am the go-to at the table if we are trying to come up with some obscure name or event.

Trivia refers to matters that are inconsequential or nonessential--details relating to information that is not considered important. But these seemingly small bits of information can mean big money. Con-

sider the world of game shows. From Jeopardy to Hollywood Squares to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, the ability to recall or deduce nuggets of trivia can mean a shot at big prizes.

Closer to home, think of the board games that get retrieved from closet shelves when friends and family drop by that rely on the question/answer format, including the granddaddy of them all, Trivial Pursuit, which is sold in 26 countries and in at least 17 languages. It launched a craze as people were eager to prove their knowledge with questions like: What is the most populous city in the world?

(Tokyo); Which actress has won the most Oscars?

(Katherine Hepburn) or Who was Henry VIII’s first wife? (Catherine of Aragon) It also launched several lawsuits including one in which the publisher of a trivia book claimed the creators of the game took about a quarter of the content from his book. In his ruling dismissing the case the judged declared, “You can’t steal trivia.”

But the other question to be asked is “Who decides what is considered trivia?” For every question about science, sports or politics there was someone who did the experiments, scored the runs, or won the elections. Those things were not inconsequential to the ones involved. In fact, they would have been, at one time, among the biggest things to happen in someone’s life. So while it may seem trivial to know who invented a now-obsolete machine, or ruled a long-gone territory, or wrote something not published until after their death, that information is absolutely not trivial to the individual was part of it.

It’s why everything we try has value. Why every opinion should be heard. Why everyone present at a meeting, matters. A long shot today could have considerable impact on someone’s tomorrow because even bookmarks, balloons and maracas had to start somewhere.

Although it might make for a great game and bragging rights within the family circle, nothing should be considered trivial because to someone, somewhere, it matters a great deal. That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money: Millennials - the new transformers Millennials are now the largest cohort in the Canadian workforce. Small wonder they are driving workplace transformation and are destined to reshape our country and possibly the entire world.

And yet, many of them still live at home.

According to the 2016 Canadian census: • 34.7% of young adults aged 20 to 34 were living with at least one parent in 2016, a share that has been increasing since 2001.

• 62.6% of Canadians aged 20 to 24 years lived with their parents in 2016 – compared to 58.3% in 2001.

Millennials choose to remain at home for reasons that range from the financial constraints they now face, staying in school longer to effectively compete in the job market (while shouldering steadily increasing post-secondary

education costs), to escalating housing costs.

Parenting styles like “helicopter parents” (who hover over their children and micromanage their lives) may also be a factor in the millennials’ decision to linger longer at home.

One downside for parents of many millennials is having double-duty responsibility for their older children and their own parents. These are “sandwich generation” parents, whose emotional and financial support of both their parents and their children can take a tremendous toll on retirement savings.

While it’s true that for many young adults, living with parents is a fiscally responsible decision even when they are working full-time and can be an ideal way to save for a house or start a business – leaving the nest is an important rite of passage for

both parents and children.

And whether the move is months or years away, it’s a good idea to set a date and make a plan. Here’s how to prepare for nest-leaving: • Pay off debt – especially high-interest debt, before it’s competing with your rent or mortgage payments.

• Establish a good credit history – get a credit card for small purchases and always pay the full balance by the due date.

• Save for major purchases – pay cash for furniture, appliances and other large purchases.

• Build an emergency fund – for minor setbacks like home or car repairs.

Both millennials and their parents should talk to a professional advisor about strategies to help avoid hefty debt and to balance priorities while maintaining a sound, long-term financial plan.

Bellegarde Chaz Sylvestre earned a second place finish with a discus throw in the Midget Boys category of 38.48m.

Carlyle Kris Bjarnason earned silver in the 200m with a time of 00:25:01s to advance to Provincials in the Midget Boys category.

Alameda Kierra Rutten took first place in the Midget Girls 80m hurdles with a time of 00:14:02s; she also earned a first place in high jump with a 1.44m jump. Rutten finished second in aggregate points with 26.

Dixie Martens earned first place in shot put for Midget Girls with a throw of 9.73m

She also earned first for Midget Girls aggregate points with 36 – 10 points more than the second place finisher.

Brayden Hill placed second in the Junior Boys 3000m race with a time of 11:37:11s.

Gracie Schutz earned first place in the 400m with a time of 01:02:62s in the Senior Girls category. Schutz has also qualified to run in the 4x100m Senior Girls relay with the South East District as well as the 4x400m relay.

Jorja Bendtsen ran the Senior Girls 800m in 02:54:95s for a second place finish. She is also an alternate for the girls’ 4x400m relay for the South East District.

Karli Colpitts launched a shot put 10.24m for a first place in the Senior Girls division. She also let loose a discus, which traveled 31.55m for first place.

Although they didn’t take first in the Senior Girls aggregate points, four grade 12 students from Carlyle earned a top five finish – Taylor Sargent got second with 28 points, while Jorja Bendtsen, Karli Colpitts, and Gracie Schutz all tied for fifth with 20 points.

Rawson Marsch qualified to run in the 4x100m relay for Senior Boys in the South East District.

Carnduff Meg Brown ran 200m in 00:29:14s for a first place finish in the Junior Girls category.

She also earned first in the 400m with a time of 01:09:52s.

Bronwyn Douglas earned a second place in Senior Girls high jump with a leap of 1.47m.

Lampman Gavin Fleck earned a first place in high jump for the Midget Boys with a jump of 1.75m.

Katie Weinrauch placed second in the 1500m Midget Girls race with a time of 6:10:04s; she also finished first in the 3000m with a time of 13:13:49s.

Manor Madison Cuddington ran the 3000m in 14:32:74s to earn first place in the Junior Girls category.

Mykel Biermann finished second in triple jump for Senior Boys with a distance of 11.79m.

Micheline Biermann competed in the Quad event for Junior Girls placing in each of the categories: 100m – first with a time of 00:13:55s,

With these finishes she earned first for aggregate points for Junior Girls Quad with 40. Biermann will also compete in the 4x100m relay for the South East District’s Junior Girls.

Oxbow Dawson Greenshields earned first in the Midget Boys 100m with a time of 00:12:01s; he also won the 100m hurdles with a time of 00:15:34. He finished third in aggregate points with 24. Greenshields is also on the Midget Boys 4x100m relay team.

Olivia Grandy took home second in the Midget Girls 800m race with a time of 2:45:46s.

Nathan Muir earned second in the 200m for Junior Boys with a time of 00:25:27s. He also earned first place in the 100m hurdles with a time of 00:16:33s. Muir also finished second place for Junior Boys aggregate points with 28, he tied with Evan James of Redvers. Muir will also compete in the 4x100m relay for the Junior Boys’ South East District relay team.

Cassidy Klatt moved on with a second place in the Junior Girls shot put with a throw of 8.10m.

Preston Carriere finished second in the Senior Boys 400m with a time of 00:57:96s. He also earned first in the 100m hurdles with a time of 00:15:87s and earned second in long jump with a leap of 5.98m.

Redvers Carson Henrion took first place at Districts in the Midget Boys 800m event with a time of 2:23:90s; he also earned first in long jump with 5.19m and second in triple jump with 10.81m. Henrion finished first for Midget Boys aggregate points with 38.

Hillary Matthewson took second place in the Midget Girls 100m dash with a time of 00:13:62s.

Evan James took second in the Junior Boys 800m race with a time of 2:24:96s. He also took first places in both the 1500m with a time of 5:06:92 and the

Cale Piper launched a discus 34.21m for a first place finish in the Senior Boys category.

Vegas continues to defy the odds sports time-out with

Bruce Penton Here’s how a National Hockey League expansion team is supposed to act in its first year: Play hard. Win the occasional game. Be loveable losers.

Promise their team’s diehard fans a brighter future. Lose a lot and prepare for Year 2.

What’s not supposed to happen is what’s going on with the Vegas Golden Knights, who have set every possible expansion team record and are currently — unbelievably! — in the Stanley Cup final, causing concern about the Apocalypse, the earth stopping rotation of its axis and dogs suddenly refusing to chase cars.

Here’s what an expansion team’s record is supposed to look like: 8-67-5 (Washington Capitals, 1974-75); 1260-6 (New York Islanders, 1972-73); 10-70-4 (Ottawa Senators, 199293); 14-57-7 (Atlanta Thrashers, 1999-2000).

Sure, the expansion drafting rules were different for the Golden Knights than they were for teams 30 and 40 years ago, but maybe that’s what you deserve these days for an expansion fee of $500 million.

A chance.

The brilliance of the Vegas braintrust cannot be underestimated.

They scouted exceptionally well. They made astute deals (“we’ll promise not to take Player A from your team but you have to give us Player B, plus a draft pick, in exchange.”)

They hired a coach, Ge-

rard Gallant, whom the players love. He asked them to work harder than the opposition, realizing that effort sometimes trumps talent. He instituted a ‘five-foot’ rule — don’t give your check more than five feet of freedom — and the Knights have followed it. Vegas opponents get a split second to make a decision about what to do with the puck and, if it’s a split second and a half, the Vegas player has disrupted his opponent, stolen the puck, or created a turnover. Resultingly, wins, wins and more wins.

No matter what happens this week as the Stanley Cup championship unfolds, sentimentality will prevail. Vegas has the underdog role locked up, and on the other side of the ice is Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, whose Hall of Fame career is lacking one key ingredient — a Stanley Cup. Hockey fans from coast to coast would love to see Ovechkin finally win a cup, but the ever-increasing number of fans of the Golden Knights don’t see it that way — they want this fairytale season to end with Cinderella wedding the handsome prince and living happily ever after.

And Year 2? Unfortunately, there’s nowhere to go but down if the Golden Knights reach the pinnacle this year. Such sadness for their fans, who will have to look elsewhere for a brighter future.

ATV trails at Moose Mountain Provincial Park open June 15 The season for riding your ATV in Moose Mountain Provincial Park is June 15 – Labour Day! If you are planning to head out to Moose Mountain to ATV this season, please note: ATVs are to be washed prior to entering the park to avoid the spread of invasive species or noxious weeds and trailered to the unloading area west of the Kenosee Lake Riding Academy.

The designated trails are along Centre Road to the Bennett and Horse Lakes Trails (only). These are the only allowable ATV trails.

Each ATV must display an ATV trail permit available at no charge from the campground office.

Helmets must be worn while riding; boots, long pants and sleeves and eye protection are recommended.

You must have a

valid driver’s license to operate an ATV and have third party liability insurance to ride on Crown land and be able to produce a copy of your insurance if requested by a peace/conservation officer.

Children between the ages of 12 and 16 must be supervised by a person who has held a continuous/valid license for one year.

Harold and Jane Laich have returned

from an European trip.

They visited Paris, Belgium, and did tours of the Beaches of Normandy- Juno Beach, Vimy Ridge, Flanders Fields and the Last Post. They also toured the Eiffel Tower and Versailles.

One week was spent in various regions of Germany where they visited with Harold’s relatives.

Sympathy to Jim and Dolly Greenbank and family on the passing of Dolly’s brother, Joe Ikert of Saskatoon.

He passed away on May 12 in his 74th year.

Word has been received of the passing of Violet(Richards) Moffitt of Regina. She passed away on May 20 at the age of 79 years. She was the eldest daughter of

Alida News Submitted by Edel Cowan

Margaret Peet attended the Eagles concert on May 17 in Regina.

She also stayed a few extra days visiting her mother Claire Germain, her sister Pauline Craggs and brother, Maurice and Cynthia Germain before returning home to Alida. Her mother accompanied her home to visit for a few days here in Alida.

Jeff Cowan (Regina) spent a day (May 19-20) visiting at the Cowan farm with his grandpar-

ents, Gray and Edel, as well as with his brother, Tim, Shelly and Ainsley.

He also spent some time visiting friends.

Adam Cowan (Estevan) spent a couple of days (May 20-21) at the Cowan farm where he enjoyed riding the quad and helping transport Grandpa and Uncle Tim from field to field, also visited with all of the other family members.

MARYFIELD VILLA Submitted by Janet Mark The event of the last week was our Seeding Tour, my first time out of Maryfield since last November. Our drivers were Mary Thiessen, Marion Gray and Linda Mulligan, with three residents each.

We went east and down past fields already seeded and waiting for rain. Mary and Bob raise goats, one of which had triplets. We stopped by the barn while Mary brought four bottles of milk to supplement the needs of the smallest ones. While the barn swallows flew in and out, several of us had a chance to bottle feed them. We drove south through Cromer Oil Field, to turn at Leora’s old homestead. Just short of it, Mary Thiessen had a flat tire, but Rob and Freda Hill came to her rescue. We transferred her passengers to the other tow cars. Two big tandem seeding outfits were going south of Maryfield.

One week later we had a much needed .6” of rain. June Thompson and Lois Humeniuk are hard at work transplanting in the courtyard for the second day. Out my window the apple blossoms and purple lilacs have burst into bud.

Roy Bortolotto and Charlotte Kovach, from the United Church, brought us communion. Charlotte also ran a one hour movie on Friday night. Fred and Mariann went to the Library, where Judy Moore did a plant demonstration.

Visitors this week included: Nancy Larsen James, Redvers, who brought Janet pictures of the family’s baptism, and confirmation. Jack Lemoine visited Edith Gagnon. Marvin and Brenda Thiessen visited his mother, Jessie. Joe and Shirley Blaise had their regular Sunday visit with the Wawota friends.

Anne Silversides and Wendy Longman were Freda’s visitors. Gladys Meansley and Ted Benson came to see others.

The Alida community extends their sincere sympathy to the Day family on the death of Tony who passed away May 24 at the age of 85 years.

Yahoo – we finally finished up (May 24) with the seeding this past week. I’m sure that most farmers will likely be done by the end of the month if all goes well for them. Then it’s on to the spraying season – keep a close look out for those weeds, bugs, etc. one is always on the go. Guys are hauling some grain right now too. Busy – busy time of the year.

Alida had a town-wide garage sale on May 25 and 26 with approximately eight different stations to tour. Do believe they were happy with the turnout.

On May 26 the Rabies Clinic was held in Alida at the Rink. We were among the first ones there, but I’m sure it was another successful turnout and our pets will be safe for another year or so.

Adam Cowan and his friend Chrissy came and spent the day (May 27) at the Cowan farm visiting with Grandma and Grandpa and enjoyed riding the quad around the farm before returning home to Estevan.

Welcome back home to all of our secondary students, I’m sure you all had an exciting year at college, university or where ever it was that you went. Enjoy your holiday and also for many of you good luck in your summer employment as well. See you around and about I’m sure.

Have you been watching the 100 Memorial Cup Hockey this past week?

Regina Pats were in this tournament as they were the host team and boy did they do an excellent job at playing fantastic hockey. The Pats made it to the finals where they played the AcadieBathurst Titans from NB on May 27 at the Brandt Centre in Regina and of course the game was televised (as all the games were). Unfortunately the Pats lost in a close and very gruelling game of hockey. Thanks to their goalie Paddock he played a terrific game and kept the guys in the game which finally ended 2-0 for the Titans.

Way to go guys – it was great hockey to watch.

The football season is now upon us – the pregames are now on. The Riders played Edmonton on May 27 in Edmonton.

The game was also televised, so one could get a chance to see the Riders in action and of course learn who the players

are. Unfortunately the Riders lost 35-12. Oh well the season has just begun. Go – Riders – Go! Alida will be a busy place this coming weekend – the annual sports day begins on Friday. I want to send global, sky-writing airplanes telling the life-change that happens beneath a steeple. I want to install a police microphone on top of my car and cruise the streets screaming to the masses about the magical Utopian community of believers waiting for them just down the street! (Ned Flanders) Do we want Millennials, 22 to 35-year-olds, to be as excited as Ned Flanders about going to church on Sunday mornings?

In his article “12 Reasons Millennials are over Church” Sam Eaton cites: only 2 in 10 Americans under 30 believe attending church is important. 59 % of millennials raised in the church have dropped out. 35 % of millennials have an anti-church stance believing the church does more harm than good. Ouch!

Eaton suggests what is needed in his metaphorical nailing of 12 theses to the wooden church door of the Millennial-less church: 1.Nobody’s Listening to Us - Nobody cares what we think.

2.We’re Sick of Hearing About Values & Mission Statements – get back to the heart of the Gospel… actions and service.

3.Helping the Poor Isn’t a Priority – clock the number of hours spent serving the least of these.

4.We’re tired of You blaming the Culture – focus on real solutions and real impact in our immediate community.

5.The “You Can’t Sit With Us” Effect – Church hasn’t always felt exclusive and “cliquey” to some.

6.Distrust & Misallocation of Resources – frugality and transparency are needed…dollars to be used to better serve the Kingdom.

7.We want to Be Mentored, Not Preached At. 8.We Want to Feel Valued not manipulated: We want to be heard and thanked – not “you’re letting your church down.”

9.We Want You to Talk to Us About Controversial Issues (No One Is).

Millennials and Church and jumping the S curve 10.The Public Perception – Church needs to be visibly involved and serving the community…being the aroma of Christ.

11.Stop Talking About Us (Unless You’re Actually Going to Do Something).

12.You’re Failing to Adapt – talk to the millennials you already have before they ask themselves, what am I still doing here?

Dramatic changes are needed to reach our millennial church avoiders. To prepare our minds for these changes let me borrow a metaphor Father Brendan McGuire used in discussing the “Abundance Theory”.

Imaging you have a beautiful orange tree in your garden. You pick all the oranges you can reach. Now you say the tree is done. Then someone brings a ladder. You climb the ladder and take all the oranges you can now reach. Next someone invents a cherry picker and you can pick the ones on top. The business world calls this “Jumping the S Curve”.

It is time for Jumping the S Curve. We, the church, have picked all the oranges we can reach.

We need a ladder. More radically, we need a cherry picker and more advanced technology to reach the millennials.

Three things needed in the church are: prayer, discerning the Spirit’s guidance and commitment to action. Tawnya Huhn responding to “12 Reasons” said, “Intense, deep pondering over scriptures is vital as it shows us the Father’s story…Good deeds flow from a heart surrendered.”

Part of the solution suggested in #12 of Eaton’s “12 Reasons” is to 1)Look at the data and take a risk.

Don’t keep trying the same things. 2)Admit that you’re out of your element…and talk to the millennials.

Farming on hope and keeping fingers crossed

By Calvin Daniels When it comes to farming there has always been a generous amount of hope and finger crossing involved.

Farmers hope frosts in the spring and fall will stay away until crops are grown and harvested.

Throughout the year they hope the rains will come when needed, that it doesn’t get too hot, and that hailstorms stay away.

And, then there are the hopes that grain and oilseed prices will be good, and that the transportation system will operate without glitches so they can access the best markets in a timely fashion.

In recent years the transportation system, or more specifically the rail system, has not worked glitch free. In fact, it has been a choke point at times in terms of getting Prairie grain from the farm to port, and that has caused shipping delays which have hurt farmers in their efforts to realize the best prices.

Farmers have been impacted by rail planning and performance issues since 2013/14, and the poor performance of the railways in the spring of 2018 has again resulted in problems such as higher onfarm inventories, lost sales, and increased demurrage costs.

The recent issues are not the first which have had farmers questioning how the rail companies handle grain.

The situation has been one where the federal government has been looked to in the past to smooth the relationship, or more accurately to create a structured ruleset which in essence force the rail companies to do a better job of handling grain.

That process continued recently with the recent passage of Bill C-49, which amended the Canada Transportation Act. “The new legislation includes requirements

for railways to disclose data and increase transparency on performance metrics, service and rates. It is hoped that these transparency initiatives, along with the potential for reciprocal penalties in railway service agreements, will improve accountability and system performance,” detailed a release from the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission (Sask Wheat).

“Bill C-49 also provides for the maintenance of the Maximum Revenue Entitlement (MRE), which ensures railway profitability while protecting farmers from excessive rail freight rates. This was a key demand from farm groups. The new bill also introduces long-haul railway inter-switching

to 1,200 km, or half of the Canadian haul, which has some potential to increase competition between railways.”

The situation is one which has had a range of grain commodity and Prairie farm groups lobbying for changes.

Bill C-49 is essentially the federal government’s response to the lobbying effort.

“The passage of Bill C-49 is the culmination of a lot of hard work by producers, farm organizations, shippers and federal government officials,” said Laura Reiter, Sask Wheat Chair in their release. “The provisions that modernize the movement of grain will improve the relationship between farmers and those in the handling and transportation

system and will provide the buyers of Canadian grain greater confidence in our ability to deliver the crops they need.”

The Bill may already be having an impact as Canadian National Railway (CN) announced that it would be purchasing 1000 new generation hopper cars to bolster shipping capacity.

The HCC Nurse is responsible for providing, participating and directing staff in the delivery of a high standard of community health. The HCC Nurse is part of the Health Care Team and is responsible for liaising between clients, families, community and health care providers to ensure clients and families understand their conditions and treatment and to ensure band members are receiving the appropriate care. The goal is to minimize the effect of the disability and/or illness and support the independence and well-being of individuals.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES • Perform initial assessments and reassessments in a timely manner and as client’s conditions change in order to develop client centered care plans that promote independence; • Provide and delegate nursing care in accordance with best practice standards; • Assign client care based on assessed need; • Maintain complete and confidential client records; • Consult with the client’s physician and other health professionals/agencies; • Complete statistical reporting as required; • Ensure all reports are completed in a timely manner and submitted as required; • Provide direction and supervision to a staff of 2 Home Health Aides; • Prepare annual nursing work plan and budgeting requirements through identified community health priorities; • Act in a manner consistent with professional code of ethics, responsibilities and standards of practice; • Other general duties as required.

Alice “Doreen” Holyoak born March 13, 1941 passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at the age of 77 years.

Doreen was predeceased by her parents, Hubert and Helen Lackey and grandparents, Isadora “Dora” & Emil Griep. Funeral lunch and fellowship followed the interment at the Creelman Hall. In lieu of �lowers, donations in memory of Doreen, may be made to Weyburn General Hospital “Palliative Care” room.

How do you give?

By Linda Wegner Cup of tea in hand, I sat on the front porch yesterday afternoon and thought about Proverbs 25:14 (New King James Version). My musings on this verse took me in two seemingly opposite directions: donating and the weather.

“Whoever falsely boasts of giving is like clouds and wind without rain,” Solomon warned his son.

The matter of donating money to charity has always been subject of discussion and sadly it’s also been fraught with emotions ranging from self-glorification to condemnation. That’s not what Solomon said nor are those the reactions what Jesus nor a host of others meant.

The first question, then, is this: how much of my time, talent, resources or money am I supposed to give to church or other charities? The simple answer is that in the New Testament we’re not commanded to give a certain amount. While many people use the tithe (ten percent) standard, others choose other options and while some donate to religious organizations, others contribute to other needy causes.

Where and how much are not the topics of Solomon’s admonition, one’s attitude is.

Frankly, it’s more a matter of how much I selfishly withhold rather than about how much I give; He’s pleased with our offerings, no matter how large or small, when they are given out of honesty, thanksgiving and humility.

Today there’s a faint promise of rain, complete with lots of clouds. We need the moisture but it’s also a great reminder that while grey skies don’t necessarily produce rain, so ostentatious giving neither waters the soul nor blesses the Lord.

If you have the money, give liberally; if not, give what you can because it’s not the amount, it’s the heart that makes the difference.

Provincial fire ban lifted - restrictions remain in some parks With rainfall in many areas, the ban on open fires for all provincial Crown land south of the Churchill River, including provincial parks, has now been lifted.

The ban was put in place on May 14. There are now no active provincial fire bans in Saskatchewan.

However, burning restrictions remain in some parks.

Campfire restrictions remain in place for Saskatchewan Landing, Pike Lake, Blackstrap, Great Blue Heron, Candle Lake, The Battlefords and Narrow Hills provincial parks. Because of continuing dry conditions in those areas, a serious fire risk remains.

Campfire restrictions in all other provincial parks and recreation sites are lifted. The fire ban for Prince Albert National Park remains in place.

Municipalities, regional, and national parks may have burning restrictions in place that are not affected by lifting the provincial ban. Please check with local authorities to see what, if any, restrictions apply in your area or where you are planning to travel. When using fire for any purpose, please take care.

For fires in or withWanted in 4.5 kilometres of the provincial forest between April 1 and October 31, you need a burn notification number, available free from your nearest Ministry of Environment Forest Protection Area office.

On February 3rd, 2018 Glen Ewen Mixed 4-H held District Public Speaking. Mistress of Ceremonies for the day was Gina Bayliss with Judges – Mrs. Rosemary Ching, Pastor Jason Schultz and Mrs. Christine Kendall.

Nineteen members from the Clubs of Alameda Beef 4-H Club, Alida and Area 4-H Beef Club, Carievale Beef 4-H Club, Glen Ewen Mixed 4-H Club, Glen Ewen Trailblazers Light Horse

4-H Club and Redvers Wranglers 4-H Light Horse Club spoke.

Cloverbud winners were: 1st place – Kamilah Pineda of Redvers Wranglers 4-H Light Horse Club, 2nd – Kylar Kamp of Alida and Area 4-H Beef Club, 3rd – Mya Gilliland - Carievale Beef 4-H Club.
