The Moose Mountain Royal Canadian Air Cadets held their annual inspection at Carlyle Elementary School on Monday, May 14.

Visiting dignitaries included Reviewing Officer – RCMP Staff Sergeant Darren Simons, Member of

Parliament – Dr. Robert Kitchen, Member of Legislative Assembly – Dan D’Autremont, Air Cadet League Representative – Rob Wilson, and Carlyle Legion President – Nedra Clark.

Lord Strathcona Medal Of Excellence – Is an award to recognize exemplary performance in both Physical and Military Training in the Cadet Program. This year’s recipient is: WO2 Tucker Sharp.

Cadet Perfect Attendance – This year we have one senior cadet attend 100% of parade nights and over 100% of optional weekend cadet activities: FSGT Shackleton.

First year cadets were then asked to speak about their experiences in the program, which were very positive with notes regarding fall and spring campouts, the Camp Saskadet trip, physical training, and building rockets.

Opportunities they would have otherwise not had.

Cadets that have been within the program longer spoke on the uniform and how the program has affected them in life. Stating that drive, determination, respect, and discipline have become a part of who they are.

Following this the cadets performed a squadron drill. When finished the visiting dignitaries said a few words about how cadets teaches numerous life lessons regardless of whether they choose to join the military, the police, or pursue a civilian career.

Staff Sergeant Darren Simons of the RCMP acted as the Reviewing Officer for the Moose Mountain Royal Canadian Air Cadets’ Annual Inspection.

Pat Ross’ son and daughter affix his new ranking to his uniform upon being promoted from Second Lieutenant to Lieutenant within the Canadian Air Force Reserves.

“The skills you acquired here, you will use for the rest of your lives,” Wilson stated. “Be proud you are an air cadet and take advantage of all it has to offer you. You get out of this program what you put in.”

“As cadets you learn to take responsibility,” D’Autremont said. “We always learn that we have rights, but we don’t often look at the other side of that, responsibility. Cadets teaches you responsibility. You learn that there are consequences for every action and you have to take responsibility for those

actions. As cadets you’re prepared to do that.”

Derek Huenison added, “I’ve seen a positive change in each and every one of you. You became friends, teammates, and family. There are extended benefits of training. When you’re sitting in a job interview… asked to make a presentation in the boardroom… or to make a toast at a wedding [you’ll reflect on your experiences here].”

Following all speeches, Pat Ross, was promoted from Second Lieutenant to Lieutenant within the Canadian Air Force Reserves.

Classroom Champions: Olympian Barret Martineau stops by Carlyle Kelly Running Observer Staff

Crescent Point hosted a BBQ on Thursday, May 17, for the participating students and families of Classroom Champions.

Classroom Champions focuses on using national team level athletes as mentors.

Students are able to interact with national level athletes and are then given challenges to do regarding various lessons their mentor

speaks about.

Carlyle Elementary School welcomed Barret Martineau, a three-time World Champion and Olympic athlete in skeleton.

“This is my second year with the program,” Martineau explained.

“My two teammates, Tristan Walker and Justin Snith, have been involved and Tristan has been my bestfriend for a long time. So, I was introduced to the program through them. I wanted to be involved

in it and I was recently sponsored by Crescent Point, which works with the program, which worked out really well.”

“I liked the idea of being a mentor and being able to tell my stories to children.”

Martineau has long been an elite level athlete having been an alternative ski jumper for the 2010 Olympics before becoming interested in Skeleton.

“After the 2010 Olympics, skeleton was just electric in Canada and I was really interested in trying it. There’s a lot of aspects that are similar between ski jumping and skeleton: intensity, focus, and exhilaration. They’re both speed and power based sports. So, I knew I had the core concepts to excel as a skeleton athlete.”

Crescent Point’s Jodi Third welcomed the classes that participated in Classroom Champions as well as their families.

The mentorship focused on addressing long and short term

goals; always doing your best; exploring diversity and how everyone is unique; the communities we belong to; perseverance; courage; and healthy living. The students were also excited to be able to watch Martineau compete at the Olympics; cheering for him as he took to compete from their classrooms.

Martineau shared with the youth, “I was at the Olympics, freaking out, I was days away from competing and it didn’t matter if I sat on

the couch or went out and bench pressed all day. There was nothing else I could do to prepare. So, I went onto Google Plus and I saw everyone cheering me on. The lessons of courage and perseverance you all retaught to me while I was at the Olympics. All of you kids were in my heart and I was just enjoying the moment.”

“You guys are all the champions. Thank you for being a part of my story and go out and tell your story.”

Language, culture and forever faith Recently I was awake in the wee hours, and in an attempt to return to peaceful rest I started to recall Christmas carols. Suddenly their magic inspired me with deeper realizations.

I had a faith-filled childhood. I was born into a German Catholic culture and actually spoke German as my first language. The language was part of a rich culture that had survived 148 years in Russia before my grandparents moved their family to Canada in 1912.

As a child you don’t argue with your cultural and religious roots. You accept truth and meaning as a soul-inspiring blessing. You wear the secure, warm and sheltering blanket of Faith.

Language has an inseparable connection to our experience of meaning as it applies to our encounter with reality and in turn, soul.

Suddenly I was gathering meaning from those lyrics I heard and sang as a child.

enter the heart at the level of meaning and soul. The shepherds are back in the rich inner landscape of childhood’s imagination. The Angels whisper heavenly peace just as himmlischer Ruh of “Silent Night” expressed it so long ago in that small village church with the broken organ.

The shepherds awake from the slumber of night in another hymn. The children, Ihr Kinderlein kommet, are invited to Bethlehem in yet another hymn from the musical landscape of my childhood.

My childhood German hymns leave no room for doubt or debate. The spiritual realities of first language and culture reassure the soul just as the loving embrace of parents enflesh the meaning of Divine love come to earth.

Dashing through the snow in a sleigh sharing Christmas wishes gave flesh to the love shared

in family and community. That was the physical embrace of metaphysical realities.

The dreamland of childhood is embodied in the physical memory of family and neighbours and cultural celebrations. This was as real as Grandfather and Grandmother Rolheiser and their prayerful journey to the new land of Canada. The domestic church they built in their home is as real as the country church they built with their neighbours.

The old stone church still stands, as does the spiritual house built on the rock foundation that wind and rain and storm cannot destroy. (Matthew 7:24-27) My early childhood reminiscences gradually moved to popular English carols that I have shared not only with family and faith community, but with friends and colleagues at work

The joy of justice

Obviously, none of us can nor, it seems, can any single nation, bring peace to the world but we have both the responsibility and the privilege to do all we can to demonstrate peace and justice to our own circle of friends, family, neighbours and acquaintances. In other words, to demonstrate honesty and integrity in our personal world.

When Cain was confronted by God, after murdering his brother Abel (Genesis 4), he retorted with these words: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” These words aren’t meant to explain the conversation between God and an evil man nor to justify a “holier than thou” attitude, they’re meant to lead us to appreciate the need to do what is right, no matter the consequences.

Proverbs 21:15 says: ”It is a joy for the just to do justice….”

To show justice – is it duty or joy? Well, in all honesty, it can be both.

When there is a positive outcome, it feels good; when our attempts are ignored or rejected it can hurt. Sometimes it comes naturally, other times it takes great effort.

For the one whose heart is set on pleasing God, negative reactions from those around us can hurt deeply, but His approval brings joy.

Weekly RCMP report Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to a variety of calls between Thursday, May 10, and the morning of Thursday, May 17.

Assaults An intoxicated individual was causing issues, but the com-

plainant didn’t want to press charges.

There is an investigation being conducted regarding rocks being thrown.

Assistance Well-being checks were conducted. One involved two individuals having an argument, a check was conducted, and there was no violence involved it was simply an argument.

A complainant called in worried that someone had fallen down, but all was well.

There was a cell phone

turned into the detachment.

RCMP assisted Regina Police Services by transporting a prisoner to court.

Breach of peace The RCMP attended and offered assistance in the Carlyle area.

Disturbing the peace Members attended a call regarding someone disturbing the peace; no charges are expected.

False alarms There were false alarms at Wawota School as well as at a residence in Redvers.

Fires RCMP assisted with three fire calls: two from Arcola and one from Carlyle.

Firearms A 42-year-old male was charged with the careless use of a firearm in the Carlyle area.

Carlyle Free Dump Day Kelly Running Observer Staff

The council for Town of Carlyle met on Wednesday, May 16, to discuss town matters.

Free Dump Day The Town of Carlyle will be having a free dump day between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 26, for Carlyle residents.

Daycare The Government of Saskatchewan did not allocate any seats in Carlyle; but, the council is continuing to work towards bringing a day-

care to Carlyle.

Sask Energy Municipal Surcharge Last year there was no Sask Energy Municipal Surcharge placed on bills by Sask Energy.

This year the surcharge has been reinstated.

Ice plant Prior to the 20182019 hockey and figure skating seasons the Ice Plant will need to be replaced. Council is currently looking at their options in this endeavour.

Town truck With it being increasingly more difficult to use a dump truck,

council is considering purchasing one.

Fire caution/bans There is currently a fire ban in the R.M. of Moose Mountain, but there is not one within the Town of Carlyle.

However, an emphasis on ensuring fire caution and safety is encouraged.

Fire guarding includes making sure flammable debris is removed from the area, keeping a water hose handy or at least eight litres of water to act as a fire extinguisher, and ensuring the fire is completely out before retiring for the evening.

Chase the Ace gaining momentum

By Lynne Bell and Kelly Running The newly-formed ‘Moms on a Community Mission’ and Carlyle Minor Hockey have joined fundraising forces for their respective causes in the form on an ongoing ‘Chase the Ace’ fundraiser has begun and runs – almost – every Saturday at the Carlyle Sports Arena; concluding on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Tara Cure, Jennifer Deimuth, Britainey Vandewoestyne,

Bobbie Dee and Nicole Currie will use half of the money raised to purchase safe, updated outdoor play structures at Carlyle Elementary School, while the Carlyle Minor Hockey Association will use their 50 percent of the profits to benefit local minor hockey programs.

“So far so good,” Cure says, adding, “We’ve had different crowds each night. The more people the better!”

the Carlyle Cardinals there to help. They’re volunteering their time this weekend.”

This weekend’s meal is a pulled pork platter, which includes BBQ pulled pork, coleslaw, and French fries; but, there’s something else very exciting on the go as well.

Movies that have stood the test of time

Do you ever sit down and watch a movie or television show from when you were younger? Are they just as good now as they were then?

One movie that I had kind of forgotten about was The Sandlot. A young boy moves to a new community in the early 1960s and there’s a group of Kelly Running eight boys that play baseball Observer Staff every day during the summer at the Sandlot… so although the new kid wasn’t good at baseball, he figured he could stand in the outfield and take up space at least since he can’t catch or throw a baseball.

As the summer evolves the kid gets better.

There’s a variety of shenanigans that happens… and before you know it he smokes a home run over the fence and into the Beast’s yard. The Beast destroys any balls that end up over the fence. The problem… the ball belongs to his stepfather and had been signed by Babe Ruth. His eight new buddies are flabbergasted as to why you’d play ball with such a special memento, but vow to get it back.

The movie although set in the 1960s was released in 1993 – surprisingly the video quality itself still holds up, but the movie itself was still exceptional. It could be that nostalgia meant rewatching the movie was going to maintain itself in memory; but, I’ve watched others from the 90s - like Power Rangers: The Movie and it was not what it once was when I was like eight-years-old.

The Sandlot, however, remained to be quite funny… it in fact stood the test of time in my opinion. Everyone can still relate to idolizing a sports hero (I suppose Google would allow a kid to look up who it is the other kids are talking about) and when autographed memorabilia is used to play in a game and look like it would be destroyed… it would be devastating to the young group of kids.

There’s the iconic line, “You’re killing me, Smalls,” which is used by people in pop culture still, just as “Stay golden Pony Boy,” is even if the ones using it haven’t read or watched The Outsiders.

Ultimately though it has a message of encouragement at its roots.

“Let me tell you something kid; everybody gets one chance to do something great. Most people never take the chance, either because they’re too scared, or they don’t recognize it when it spits on their shoes.” The Babe tells Benny.

“Remember kid, there’s heroes and there’s legends. Heroes get remembered but legends never die, follow your heart kid, and you’ll never go wrong.”

I’m not sure how many movies really stand the test of time, but I have to say The Sandlot is one of them in my opinion. The Outsiders – which I mentioned above – is as well, although it was an exceptional book first as well.

The Wizard of Oz, Braveheart, The Godfather, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Taxi Driver, Groundhog Day, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Jaws, The Shining, Pulp Fiction, Casablanca, The Breakfast Club, Die Hard, The Princess Bride, Citizen Kane, Top Gun, Grease, Rocky, Psycho, Indiana Jones, The Sound of Music, Pretty Woman, Gone with the Wind, Home Alone, Back to the Future (it’s actually surprising how much they got right in these movies – although we’re still waiting on an actual hover board), Reservoir Dogs, Saving Private Ryan, The Goonies, One Flew Over the Cuckoo Nest, Forrest Gump, The Green Mile, and Schindler’s List are a quick list that come to mind for movies that, in my opinion, have stood the test of time.

Heart of the Moose Mountains

It just keeps getting better I was attending a banquet recently when one of the MC’s shared words that can send shivers up someone’s spine: “Break into small groups and discuss…..”

Actually, at this banquet it wasn’t quite that bad, but in between presentations we were given questions to discuss with those sitting at our table. Topics My Outlook like words of wisdom we would Shelley Luedtke give our younger selves, or the places we would most like to visit. The question that intrigued me the most, and the one that I am still pondering is, “What is the best thing someone has done for you, and what is the best thing you have done for someone else?”

The first part of the question sent my thoughts in a multitude of directions. Example after example came to mind of people who have done kind, thoughtful, unexpected or overwhelming things that left me surprised, humbled and so appreciative. In the weeks since that night the list has grown as memory has brought more and more moments to mind. But it was the second part of the question that left me unable to come up with a response: what is the best thing I have done for someone else?

I had to come to terms with the fact that there is a definite imbalance. I have been the recipient of far more than I have given. Which of course runs contrary to the teaching I have known since I was a child--it is better to give than to receive. So how do I address the imbalance?

Some acquaintances who work in camp ministry shared that while attending a special event, they met a couple who, at the end of the evening, gifted them with a trip to Hawaii. I remarked to my husband what an amazing moment that must have been for them. My husband agreed but then added, “I think I would rather have been the one in a position to give that gift.” Imagine being able to

do that for someone. Perhaps you already have-and you’re not done.

Many people can think of ways to help so easily and naturally it seems to be second nature to them. Maybe not a trip to Hawaii, but things like picking up the tab at a restaurant for people you know…or not, sending groceries to someone’s front door, organizing a fundraiser, visiting with someone who needs company, giving gifts on no particular occasion, doing far more than could reasonably be expected, or simply finding a meaningful way to brighten a day, however briefly.

When I consider my family and friends, the colleagues I’ve worked with, the acquaintances who have crossed my path and even the strangers who have briefly stepped into my life, I am utterly overcome by the generosity of care and encouragement I have experienced. And there are a lot of people who likely don’t even realize that what they said or did meant more than they could have ever thought.

What’s the best thing someone has done for me? There isn’t enough space to even begin.

What’s the best thing I have done for someone else? I have absolutely no idea. But that’s okay.

Because doing things for others should never be about needing response or reaction. There is nothing quite like the feeling of giving; of helping; of blessing someone in a manner that may seem small but could be huge to the ones who finds themselves on the receiving end. Nothing else is necessary.

What’s the best thing I have ever done for someone? I don’t know…yet…but this is where it gets intriguing--exciting even--or at least pretty encouraging. Because whatever I have done in the past can be bettered today. Imagine for a moment what things around us could look like if we made an intentional attempt to out-do what we did yesterday. Just picture it--the best things we have ever done could be happening tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after that. Nothing will ever be the same. That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money: Dynamically diversified investing As an experienced investor, you know that asset allocation is a vital strategy when it comes to assembling and maintaining your investment portfolio. Asset allocation simply means dividing your assets among the different asset classes – stocks, bonds and cash. With these currently highly correlated sectors so dominant, it is difficult to offset losses through investments in relatively small, less-correlated sectors such as Healthcare.

So, achieving true sector diversification within the Canadian market is difficult at best. That is why savvy Canadian investors have traditionally sought diversification by investing in various areas of the world. But rather than taking a do-it-yourself, hitand-miss approach to diversification, many investors are now choosing a dynamic asset allocation strategy.

Why is Jay’s Vlad Guerrero, Jr. still in the minors?

How long can the Toronto Blue Jays keep Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., down on the farm?

That could be a question that goes on all summer, or until the Jays trade third baseman Josh Donaldson and finally call up the 19-year-old son of the former Expo with the same name.

When he does arrive in The Show, Guerrero, Jr., will be the youngest player in Major League Baseball and if hype was cash, he’d be rolling in dough.

A Canadian, by virtue of being born in Montreal while his dad was patrolling the outfield for the late, lamented Expos, Guerrero, Jr., has been ripping up the minor leagues and legions of Jays’ fans, eager to see the future today, are calling for the Jays to bring him up to the big club.

While scouts say Guerrero, Jr.’s bat is definitely major-league calibre, some of them say his defensive work is still minor league. So what? Toronto happens to play in a league that uses the designated hitter. They could bring him up, let him loose in A.L. batters’ boxes, and work slowly through the rest of this season and

over the winter on his glove work. Does Hollywood care that Meryl Streep might be a bad cook?

Through May 18, Guerrero, Jr. — listed as the No. 2 prospect in all of MLB and somewhat of a legend in New Hampshire, where he’s ripping the cover off the ball for the AA Fisher Cats — was batting .407 with 24 extra-base hits, including seven homers, and 41 RBI, in just 37 games. Great plate patience, too, with as many walks as he has strikeouts.

A story on deadspin. com in mid-May was headlined: “Please Just Call Up Vladimir Guerrero Jr., He’s Too Good For The Minor Leagues.”

So why aren’t the Blue Jays calling their travel agent and making flight plans for the young phenom to shore up their roster? The Jays’ braintrust isn’t talking about it much, but they probably just don’t want to be accused of rushing Guerrero, Jr., into the big leagues, which might prematurely force their hand on Donaldson’s future.

When Guerrero, Jr., finally does get the call, another son of a former big leaguer, Bo Bichette (remember Dante Bichette?) might not be far behind, although he may need one more year of minor-league seasoning. Both are starring with the Fisher Cats, which, by the way, is a member of the weasel family.

C’mon, Jays. Quit being weasels. Get at least one of those kids

up to the big club.

When the lights go out, get the latest with SaskPower’s outage map New online tool gives status updates, estimated restore times SaskPower is officially launching its new online outage map today, giving customers an easy-to-use way to get the latest information on outages across

the province.

“We’ve piloted the outage map over the last few weeks and have been really happy with the feedback we’ve received,” said Acting Vice-president of Distribution and Customer

Services Nidal Dabghi.

“SaskPower is always on the lookout for new ways to get information to our customers. Through the new map, a customer can see status updates on current outages in their neighbourhood,

including estimated restoration times, and also get information on upcoming planned outages as SaskPower works to improve the electrical system.”

The outage map provides the same information that is distributed through Twitter and SaskPower’s mobile

app alerts. It’s currently available on SaskPower. com, but is scheduled to be added to the SaskPower mobile app in July. The map also offers customers the ability to search for different addresses in the province to see the status of an outage. It can be used on a desktop, tablet or mo-

bile device.

While customers can now use the map to get restoration times in the event of an outage, we ask that you continue to report new outages to our Outage Centre by calling 310-2220.

Red Market Barn opens for the season Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Red Market Barn is a staple in southeast Saskatchewan.

Located 2 km north of Kenosee Lake it is a popular Sunday outing, which involves food, music, and vendors promoting a wide variety of products.

Harold and Brenda Johnson have put in a lot of work over the past five years and continue to host the ever popular Sunday outing.

The loft of the barn this year commemorates the passing of Cheryl Winkler – she had operated Moose Mountain Recoup and Release Wildlife Re-

habilitation – and used to sell feather paintings to help fund the wildlife rescue. Now, where her art was once displayed, a memorial plaque is prominently displayed.

They are working to raise money in order to purchase a bench in the Moose Mountain Provincial Park in Winkler’s honour.

The vendors at the Red Market Barn came in from different parts of Saskatchewan with a myriad of items for sale.

This included handcrafted items – big and small, food items, clothing, and the Arcola Girl Guides were even selling cookies – raising funds for the upcoming year of activities.

Unlike most May long weekends, the weather was sunny and although the wind picked up a little bit in the afternoon, it was a beautiful day to spend outside with a cold beverage seeing the unique items Saskatchewan people are making.

The yard was full all day and even calling ahead to let Brenda know they were coming was a group from Estevan out for a tour on their motorbikes.

The kick off to the season at the Red Market Barn was a hit.

The barn is open June 3, June 24, and then every Sunday throughout the summer from July 1 to Sept. 2.

Southern Country had people up and dancing, sitting and tapping their toes, and/or singing along to the music at the Red Market Barn.

National Health & Fitness Day is Saturday, June 2nd, 2018 (Notes from the National Health and Fitness Day website/Canadian Food Guide) Our world has increasingly become more sedentary and Saturday, June 2, is National Health and Fitness Day (NHFD).

The day is described as, “an initiative to make Canada the Fittest Nation on Earth, starting with marking one day, the first Saturday in June as the day when Canadians get out and get active in any way they wish.”

National Health and Fitness Day Act, Bill S-211, became law in December 2014.

According to self-reported stats from 2014, Stats Canada, showed that 20.2 percent of Canadians aged 18-years-old and older (roughly 5.3 million adults) were obese for the height and weight they provided.

This was an increase from the 2003 study.

Obesity has been linked to chronic diseases: hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, and certain types of cancer.

Eating well and being active is an important part of life; but, what is being healthy and fit?

Eating well Eating well doesn’t mean cutting out all treats, it means moderation of those treats, and following the Canadian Food Guide.

This includes a recommendation of eating at least one dark green and one orange vegetable each day. As well as eating fruits and veggies more often than drinking fruit or vegetable juices.

They suggest making at least half of your grain products whole grain each day – barley, brown rice, oats, quinoa, and wild rice. This also includes whole grain bread, oatmeal, and whole wheat pasta.

The Canada Food Guide states that it’s a good idea to have 500ml (two cups) of milk every day for Vitamin D or drinking the equivalent of a soy based or alternate that is fortified with Vitamin D if you’re not a milk drinker.

Cardinals Home Opener

Brett Turgeon was catching for the Cardinals against the Fireballs, while local umpire, Kruz Wilson, called the game from behind home plate.

The Carlyle Cardinals hosted their home opener on Thursday, May 17, against the Southeast Fireballs.

With a crack of the bat, the ball goes flying, and the Cardinals take off around the bases.

The Cardinals’ won against the Fireballs 7-3.

Craig Savill was partnered with Kruz Wilson in calling the game.

And it’s off to first base for the Cardinals. The next home game for the Cardinals is on Tuesday, May 29, when they host the Redvers A’s.

Word has been received of the passing of Lynne(Allison) Wheeldon of Vernon,BC. She passed away on May 16

at the age of 77 years.

Sympathy to her family, her twin sister, Beth Moss and her family and the family of the late Keith Allison.

It is with great sorrow that the family wishes to announce the sudden passing of Robert Richard Bauche, late of Regina, SK and formerly of Redvers, SK on Friday, May 11, 2018 in Regina, SK at the age of 50 years.

Robert was predeceased by his grandparents and his brother Gilles Bauche.

Left with fond memories are Robert’s daughters, Lacey Bauche and Hilary (Joel) Mack and their daughter Parker Mack. Robert will also be missed by his parents, Harvey and Yvonne Bauche; sister Diane (Dale) Kenler and their children, Kelsey Kenler (Candra Morris), Jesse Kenler (Kimberley Denslow), and Janessa Kenler (Tyson Fletcher); brother Allen Bauche and his children, Shalissa Bauche (Josh Gabrielle) and their daughter Brynlee Busby and Gilles Bauche (Sam Frederiksen); as well as numerouse aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Celebration of Life was held on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bellegarde Community Hall, Bellegarde, SK with The Rev. Michelle Moore presiding. Interment took place at the St. Maurice Parish Cemetery, Bellegarde. A time of lunch and fellowship was held at the Bellegarde Hall.

Rita Beauchesne

February 28, 1920 - May 1, 2018 Rita Beauchesne, of Wawota, beloved wife of the late Lucien (Shorty) Beauchesne passed away at Deer View Lodge, Wawota on Tuesday May 1, 2018 at the age of 98 years.

Rita was born to Claudemir and Valeda Giroux of the Dumas district. After her marriage, she and her husband, Lucien (Shorty) lived on the farm at Dumas until 1955 when they purchased the John Deere dealership in Wawota. They raised a family of 5 children.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Shorty and all of their siblings and spouses.

She leaves to celebrate her life �ive children: Anita (Doug) Cudmore, Richard (Carrol) Beauchesne, Lauraine (Joe) Weatherald, Dennis (Vickie) Beauchesne, Wanda (Jim) Roberts; 13 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren as well as a large extended family.

Funeral Service was held in the Wawota Town Hall on Friday, May 11th at 1:30 P.M. with Fr. Felipe Faustino of�iciating.

Arrangements were in care of Carscadden Funeral Chapels. Interment followed in the Dumas Cemetery.

I was informed the other day that there had been 74 guests who attended and enjoyed the Mother’s Day Brunch at Marcy’s Diner on Sunday, May 13.

Way to go – can’t wait until the next one is scheduled.

Guests with Marcia Gervais on Sunday, May 13 were Gorman and Anita Orsted (Brandon), Joanne Orsted (Brandon), Lucien and Linda Wilvers (Redvers), Brad, Corinne and Josh Bulbuck (Redvers), Nicole, Zadie, Karsyn and Tenley Gervais (Carlyle), Tracy and Alix Rai (Carlyle), Pierre and Brenda Boutin (Alida), Sheila Sterling (Regina) and Eric Wilmont (Carnduff). They all celebrate Mother’s Day at the Diner.

Gloria Girard (Sylvan Lake) is down visiting with family members for a few days, and is spending time visiting with her mother Dot Girard at the Sunset Haven in Carnduff.

Margaret Peet and Brenda Junk spent Thursday and Friday (May 10 and 11) in Regina and attended the musical “Dirty Dancing”.

Gary and Lorne Junk went to Regina on May 17 where they visited with their brother, Ken, Dina and Hayden Junk. While there they also attended the Eagles concert.

Tim and Shelly Cowan, Ken and Diane Potapinski, Jason and April Junk all attended the Eagles Concert in Regina on May 17.

The Baseball season is now in full swing with schedule games being held every week as well as some tournaments on weekends keeping parents and grandparents busy following their children and grandchildren as they compete in their baseball games. Good luck kids – enjoy your games.

It was the May long weekend this past weekend – hope everyone had a good holiday. I’m sure many made their way over to their summer camping spot to enjoy the weekend away from the hustle and bustle of their daily jobs. I imagine that this long weekend had many of you out in the garden if you haven’t already gotten that job done. I know I’m hoping to do most of my gardening done, especially if we should receive some rain. Sure do need that moisture to help germinate those little seeds. The flower plots, planters etc. surely do look nice now, hope the wind doesn’t raise too much havoc with the plants.

Gee looking at the month of May we are nearing the end – only a week left. Where does the time seem to go – I just can’t seem to keep up with it. Now thinking about it – Graduations are being planned and soon being held – my but time does fly by. Good luck to everyone as you plan for and head into your next adventure.

There’s not that much news this week, due to an early deadline on Thursday, but we’ll be back on schedule this coming week when the news is submitted on Monday, May 28, that’s 1.5 weeks since this one was submitted, should have lots of news for the column. By Calvin Daniels There is a reason people are reluctant to open a can of worms, and that is simply once it is open the wiggly critters tend to escape and can be very hard to get back in the can.

It perhaps is an old adage United States president Donald Trump should perhaps have thought of before

forcing a renegotiation of the long-standing North American Trade Agreement.

Of course Trump has shown he very much marches to his own drum in terms of how he does things, even if his drum appears badly out of tune with common sense in general, and reality on more than a few occasions.

But questioning Trump’s reasons for opening NAFTA now is pretty much worrying about why someone left the barn door open after the horse has escaped, to continue in the vein of old sayings.

Regardless of the reasoning, the NAFTA deal needs to be renegotiated, and from the perspective of Canada in general, and Canadian agriculture specifically, the sooner the better.

Perrin Beatty, the president and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce touched on the need for urgency when he spoke at the annual Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce Conference held in Yorkton recently.

Perrin said there are also some key issues before the country now which business needs to be keeping abreast of, and have a say in depending on how things progress. The first are the ongoing negotiations around the NAFTA. Beatty said NAFTA is “something that is special in North America,” adding it has been a benefit to the three countries involved.

So the key in negotiations is not to do anything which hurts the

signatories in terms of trade.

“What is crucial is we do nothing that undermines it,” said Beatty.

That said, Beatty did suggest some changes are warranted, noting as an example at the time of the original negotiations and signing for NAFTA “e-commerce didn’t exist.”

There are also new job classifications today which should be covered in the deal which are not because they also did not exist at the time, he said.

Beatty said the next days are crucial in the current negotiations as a deal

needs to be in place soon ahead of presidential elections in Mexico this summer, and Congressional elections in the United States this fall.

The Congressional and Mexican presidential elections were thought by many to be the motivation to hammer out a deal through May, but the reality of a complex document with each side having agendas they see as important have pretty much scuttled the likelihood of deal anytime soon.

Robert Lighthizer, the U.S. Trade Representative came out recently suggesting a deal

is a long way off, and there are now indications from some quarters that a deal might well not be achieved before sometime in 2019.

A lot can change in that time, including the potential of a new Mexican head less supportive of NAFTA and a change in the congressional mix stateside.

And at risk is a deal that while never perfect through its history, or even fair on every commodity, at least provided a known framework of rules to follow which was a general positive for trade among the three countries.

While attending Normal School in Regina in 1942, Freda Longman went to Tommy Douglas’ nomination meeting; and Janet heard the future Civil Rights Leader, Martin Luther King, sing negro spirituals. McKenzie King,

shook the hand of ten year old Ralph. Others had met John and Olive Diefenbaker, Pierre and Margaret Trudeau, and politicians from our local member, Dan D’Autremont, to other national levels. Mariann and Jessie spoke of teachers who had a formative influence on their lives.

Fifteen children of the United Church Sunshine Club came to sing at the Villa, and brought us crafts they had made when they meet on Thursdays.

Dale Thiessen and Janet led us in a Hymn sing Sunday night, and sang our favourite, In The Garden as a duet with guitar.

Some of the residents were able to go out to spend the day with their families. Joe and Shirley Blaise came to have dinner with Alice. Linda Mulligan, Elkhorn; and Doug and Diana Longman, Rocanville; visited with Freda. Clarence and Betty, Ruth Purvis visited Janet, and Philip Mark came for supper.

Saskatchewan community airports receiving a lift The Government of Saskatchewan is investing $700,000 in cost-shared grants to 12 community airports across the province for repairs and upgrades through the Community Airport Partnership (CAP) program.

“Community and regionally-owned airports support vital services like air ambulance, law enforcement and firefighting,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister David Marit said. “We are pleased to be able to partner with 12 communities to upgrade and maintain their local community airports.”

Grants are cost-shared up to a maximum amount of $275,000.

CAP is designed to help offset the capital costs of rehabilitation and infrastructure improvements.

“A mile of highway gets you a mile down the road; a mile of runway gets you the world,” Saskatchewan Aviation Council President Janet Keim said. “I applaud the smaller communities in realizing the potential and value of their airports in both economic growth as well

as the social benefits for their region.”

Airports benefiting from the CAP program this year include: • Carlyle - $14,920 – runway and apron crack filling; • Kindersley - $4,000 – runway asphalt preservation; • Lucky Lake $61,669 - runway preservation: crack sealing and slurry seal; • Melfort - $52,478 – rewiring and upgrading lighting; • Moose Jaw $30,000 – runway and taxiway crack sealing and replacement of aerodrome beacon; • North Battleford $275,000 – rehabilitation of the runway; • R.M. of Eldon $40,966 – runway, taxi-

way and apron crack sealing, fog seals and line painting; • Shaunavon $10,000 – lighting upgrades; • Swift Current $46,500 - re-designation of runway, asphalt maintenance, lighting upgrade, runway and taxiway markings; • Tisdale - $27,000 – runway patching and crack sealing; • Weyburn - $8,800 – line painting and fence installation; and • Yorkton - $128,667 – apron extension.

Since 2007, $7 million has been invested in the Community Airport Partnership program, benefiting 36 community airports through $14 million in airport rehabilitation.
