Hockey Day in Lampman: in memory of Eric Hanreider Kelly Running Observer Staff

It was a day of great hockey action in Lampman on Saturday, Jan. 7; one that had youth out enjoying the game they love for the day, while honouring Eric Hanrieder, a man from the community who had been highly involved with the happenings at the rink over the years, who unexpectedly passed away in April of 2016.

Hanrieder had committed countless hours of his time to the rink and to coaching, while he had recently taken a job working at the rink. It was his passion and for that reason Hockey Day in Lampman was dedicated to him.

His son, Jordan, spoke fondly of his father.

Smiling he explained, “Like myself he wasn’t great with words, but he was a man of action. He was involved in this community and this rink. He ended up working here, but he was always volunteering his time to help even before that. He had a construction job, so would fix things that were broken and do repairs as needed. It was the type of thing needed to help keep small town rinks functioning.”

“He was born and raised here – lived his whole life here – and much of his time was spent at the rink as a player, then as a coach. He was coaching before I was even born, he loved being involved here.”

Jordan added, “I’ll always be fond of how he showed he cared through actions, stepping in when people needed help, and it shows at the rink where he worked – he gave his time and labour – to help ensure we have a nice facility here.”

A presentation was held before the final game of the day – the Midget game between Lampman/ Arcola and Weyburn.

Michele Walter, a family friend of the Hanrieder’s, read a letter on behalf of the Saskatchewan Hockey Association’s Mary Ann Veroba (Chairperson): “Eric spent many hours in hockey rinks in lots of different roles. A player, a coach, a worker, a volunteer, a parent, an administrator of a hockey league, and a fan of the game,” Veroba wrote.

“When the community of Lampman was presented the task of managing the Moose Mountain Hockey League – the person that was asked to do this was Eric Hanrieder. He knew hockey, he was fair and honest and would work hard to do the job of League President. We do know that Debbie was a great support to Eric and her role in the league was also a large factor in the great success of Eric’s time as president.”

“His knowledge and skills are greatly missed.

Last year Eric told me he had his dream job. He loved hockey and liked kids – this way he got to be around both. And what guy doesn’t dream about having your other truck as a Zamboni.”

“At the annual meetings of SHA and Hockey Canada we held a moment of silence to recognize Eric’s lifelong contribution to our game. His spirit will stay – in the hearts of the players he coached, in the hearts and minds of those who noticed all the little things Eric did.”

Following the presentation, Jordan walked to centre ice for a ceremonial puck drop.

Hockey Day in Lampman began at 8 a.m. with breakfast served by the Lampman Fire Department, while games were held all day: Lampman Initiation took on an Estevan team, Lampman’s Novice team played Bienfait, Lampman/Bienfait Atom’s took on Kipling, Lampman/Arcola Pee Wee played Alameda, Lampman/Arcola Bantam’s were up against Carnduff, and finally the Lampman/Arcola

Midget’s played Weyburn.

The rink kitchen was open throughout the day, while a roast beef supper was held at 5 p.m. which sold out.

A large variety of raffle items were available throughout the day as well and a 50/50 draw was held throughout the day with the winner, Don Wilhelm, drawn during the Midget game. Wilhelm won $707.50.

The day was a true testament to community as numerous individuals volunteered their time to ensuring the day went off without a hitch.

Carlyle’s business licence rates change Lynne Bell

Carlyle Town Council held its first regular meeting of 2017 on Wednesday, Jan. 4. Council’s next meeting will be held Wednesday, Jan. 18 at the Carlyle Civic Centre.

Business licences Bylaw No. 2017-01 was passed by members of council and includes changes to business licence rates within the Town of Carlyle. Class A, Class B and home-based businesses are now required to pay $24 per year for a business licence. New doctor The Town of Carlyle looks forward to welcom-

Fire Hall renovations Council is currently exploring the cost of necessary renovations to the Carlyle Fire Hall.

Emergency Measures Notification System Council is currently working with a consultant to create a comphrensive Emergency Measures Notification System for the Town of Carlyle.

Information courtesy SGI: January is intersection awareness month for the RCMP and SGI. Statistically, 44 percent – nearly half – of all collisions in the province occur at intersections (based on a three-year average from 2012-2014).

For Staff Sargent Darren Simons, defensive driving is an important aspect to avoiding collisions, “Even if I have the right of way – a green light, through street – I always look both ways. Defensive driving is a must because the person in the right can still end up in the hospital or with vehicle damage. Always take the time and no ‘farmer stops.’”

It is recommended that drivers be aware and scan the road ahead for any hazards, including pedestrians looking to cross the street. Pedestrians have the right of way at intersections.

At intersections do not run red lights, roll through stop signs [farmer stop], speed through intersections, follow too closely to the vehicle in front of you, make unsafe left-handed turns, or rely on having the right of way.

Approximately 25 percent of fatal collisions, 57 percent of injury collisions, and 40 percent of property-damage only collisions occur at intersections.

Failing to yield to a pedestrian at a marked pedestrian crossing carries a fine of $230 and four demerit points. Pedestrians always have the right of way at unmarked intersections or stop sign unless otherwise indicated by signage.

Pedestrians must ensure they: Stop. Look. Listen. at intersections and also look out for possible dangers when crossing the street. They are encouraged to make eye contact with the driver before crossing the street to ensure they’ve been seen.

Canadian agriculture benefits from low dollar

By Calvin Daniels Canadian agriculture producers have long prided themselves in being among the best in the world.

In terms of dryland farming there is little doubt Canadians producers are good at getting the most bushels out of every acre.

Certainly the technology is there.

There are numerous companies working to create ever better varieties to grow, not to mention working on the nutrient concoctions to optimize production, and of course the chemicals to combat disease, fungus and weed issues.

At one point the production of the highest quality grains was a definite edge in the marketplace.

Bakers desired Canadian wheat for its milling quality. The production was targeted to premium markets.

That seems less an advantage today.

Of course as consumers we too tend to look less at the quality of food, or at least we tend to balance that consideration with price.

The idea of non-brand name products on the store shelves seems to be increasing. We are even now seeing store-specific label lines, getting aggressive ad campaigns, even though they are often marketed as lower cost options.

The cost is definitely more of a factor on many levels today.

Recently Farm Credit Canada (FCC), noted Canadian agriculture benefited from a relatively low dollar throughout 2016 and this trend is expected to continue into 2017.

That was report at least according to J.P. Gervais, FCC’s chief agricultural economist.

“There are certainly other factors that could

influence Canadian agriculture, such as the global economy, the investment landscape, commodity and energy prices,” said Gervais in a release. He was speaking to his top five agriculture economic trends to watch in 2017. “The Canadian dollar, however, has been a major driver for profitability in the last couple of years and could have the biggest influence on the overall success of Canada’s agriculture industry in 2017.”

Gervais is forecasting the dollar will hover around the 75-cent mark and will remain below its five-year average value relative to the U.S. dollar in 2017, potentially making the loonie the most significant economic driver to watch in Canadian agriculture this year.

The dollar means Canadian production can be purchased at a lower real cost. Marketers can walk into a foreign purchasing agent offering the usual quality we are known for, but at a price made lower by the dollar.

There is of course a flipside to that dollar, as anyone who turns to online sources such as Amazon.com and ebay.com will recognize at present.

And, a lower Canadian dollar will make a number of farm inputs more expensive, at least those imported to this country.

It does come down to a trade-off, determining if the low dollar stimulates sales enough to offset increased input costs.

Gervias says it will.

“Given the choice, producers are better off with a low-dollar than one that’s relatively strong compared to the U.S. dollar,” he said.

Whether those same economic realities will extent to the non-farming Canadian is perhaps less clear though.

Redvers-raised Sydney Hill has parlayed her hockey prowess all the way to the Ivy League.

Now playing defence for the Dartmouth College Big Green, in Hanover, New Hampshire, Hill credits her hard-won confidence and innate stubborness with getting her there.

“This biggest challenge? Well, honestly, it’s feeling like I belong here- everybody’s so smart,” says Hill. “But the best advice I got came from one of my favourite profs, who told me: ‘There’s no need to worry about being here. You’re already here.’”

“So it was up to me to make the most of this opportunity.”

Hill’s hockey career began in Redvers, when as a nine-year-old, she started to play simply because “all of my friends did it.”

“My dad played goal, so for a couple of games, they put me in goal,” she smiles. “I was not good- I was terrible. After only a few games- when I let in so many goals that some of the boys on the team were bugging me about how we were losing because of me- I got pulled.”

“It really hurt my confidence, but stubborn me thought: ‘I’m not taking this. I’m good at skating backward- better than I am skating forward’- so I thought: ‘I want to play defence.’”

After her years as a Redvers Rocket- where as a member of the Rockets’ Bantam girls team, Hill’s hockey career began to take off.

“In grade nine, I played Triple A in Weyburn. That was after not making the Moose Mountain Wild (team). After that, I just went home and worked harder and I made Weyburn as an underage player.”

“I was 13 and that’s really rare. I had to make a decision, so I played for the Weyburn Gold Wings Triple A team. I was so young, I was at a different school away from Redvers, but I did grade nine in Weyburn and after that, my parents and I started looking at universities.”

“We eventually went to a showcase in Warner, Alberta with no intention of me going to the (Warner Hockey) school there. I was 14 then and my dad thought maybe I could go later in grade 11 or 12, but Mikko (Makela, former NHL player and school

director) met with us and I was a 14-year-old going to a U19 team.”

“I was very on the fence, but I ended up getting a lot of ice time that year and I played a large role on that team from a young age.”

“Mikko taught me a lot and I gained a lot of confidence. He’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever had and he definitely believes in his players.”

During her high school hockey career- she graduated from the Virden Collegiate Institute- Hill was a five-time letterwinner in hockey and softball, represented the province as part of Team Saskatchewan’s hockey squad at the Canada Winter Games and the U18 Hockey Nationals and was named to the JWHL (Junior Women’s Hockey League) All-Star team, while earning an Academic Gold Diploma.

Hill says, “My goal was to play hockey at the CIS or NCAA level and kind of use hockey to get a great education. Now that I’m here-playing in the NCAA at Dartmouth- my biggest hurdle is self-confidence in a way and finding a way to make yourself happy, even though you have hockey, essays and all of that stuff, you have to separate yourself from the fact that those are jobs, but you have to prioritize things so you live your life, too.”

“There are a lot of bright people here, all with unique perspectives,” she adds. “I’m also very aware that for a lot of kids, this is their dream school and they work really hard to get in.”

Hill committed to the Dartmouth Big Green in October 2015. “There was an early decision deadline, so I applied that way, under kind of a tight deadline. In three days, I put the package togetherI wrote two essays, filled out the forms, gathered recommendations, everything.”

“But it’s super-intense and I was relieved when I heard from them in December, accepting me contingent on my marks. When I got there, some people told me they wrote 12 different essays, so I’m really glad it worked out for me.”

“School’s great, but there are a lot of misconceptions about the whole Ivy League thing,” says Warner. “Everybody’s really readying you for the real world thing. As I said before, the school encourages you with that balancing act. For people in sports, you do make a social life, but your friends are probably studying on Friday night, instead of going out, so you socialize a different way.”

“We have games every weekend, so if we’re not playing at home (in Dartmouth’s Thompson Arena), we use those bus trips to do homework and study.”

“We play all of the Ivy Leagues except Columbia,” she says. “And a few more.”

“Our team has incredible fan support- especially from our men’s teams. So the games can get pretty loud and there’s even a tradition involving tennis balls being thrown on ice. When we play away, it gets pretty noisy, too.”

“Boston crowds are really fun, Cornell has a really cool marching band, Clarkson (University) have fans who heckle you all the time and Princeton is one our rivals. But we all get fired up to play Harvard. Everybody on every team wants to beat Harvard.”

“Our team of 24 people is made up of people from Canada and the U.S., mainly. There are 14 Canadians and 10 Americans, so there are more Canadians on the team,” smiles Hill. “Most of the Americans are from places like Connecticut, Boston, the New England area. Some of the Canadians are from Toronto, Winnipeg and there’s a girl from Melville, too.”

“When I committed to Dartmouth, the head coach that I committed to retired,” says Hill. “My new head coach- Laura Schuler- is the new head coach of Team Canada now. But even though the coaching staff I’d committed to had changed, it worked out.”

“It’s interesting, because she has us doing a lot of different stuff,” adds Hill. “She has me playing forward sometimes. It was scary at first, I’ve never really played forward before. We even have a little freshman line.”

“Everybody’s an alpha female,” says Hill. “It is what it is. I’ve been on teams like this since I’ve been young. Everybody has the same goal- to win.

There’s lots of sacrifice, but lots of gains, too.”

“I’ve learned that it’s not the drills or the equipment or stuff like that when you’re working toward your goal. It’s the time and effort and focus and work you put into it.”

Assistance RCMP responded to numerous calls of vehicles, which had broken down on the sides of highways. RCMP recommends people regularly check the maintenance of their vehicle, especially during winter in the cold weather or before a long trip.

Stray horses were reported.

An individual phoned for a ride from the Carlyle area as they suspected they would be assaulted where they were.

In Carlyle an individual complained of snowballs being thrown at them and lost money in the process.

RCMP assisted EMS with a patient.

RCMP responded to false alarms in the area.

Members assisted with mental health files during this time as well.

A firearms investigation took place.

Assault An assault occurred in the Carlyle area and it resulted in a breach of release conditions charge.

There was an assault reported in Arcola outside

of a business, which is currently under investigation.

An assault was reported in Parkman, RCMP responded and an individual was lodged in cells.

Allegations of an assault with a weapon was reported, but the alleged victim refused to cooperate.

Fraud Various scams and frauds are continually reported in the area.

Recently an internet scam, involving a pop-up ad stating that a virus was detected on your computer and that you should contact a number with your information to allow them to fix the issue. After looking the number up, the individual thought it looked like a legitimate answer as the number appeared to be associated with Microsoft, however, it was not.

Traffic infractions In a hit and run, someone hit a tractor and drove away without reporting it.

Five individuals were found to be driving without proper motor vehicle insurance.

Four tickets were issued relating to intersection violations.

Various speeders were stopped and ticketed; two individuals were fined $190 each for speeding.

Seatbelt violators were fined.

Various tickets for vehicle equipment regulations were issued.

Traffic collisions occurred: one involved a vehicle hitting a ditch and in another incident someone struck a pole.

Liquor related offences Two separate reports of impaired drivers were made, but RCMP were unable to locate the individuals.

An individual who was intoxicated and walking was given a ride home.

Breach of conditions It was found that a few people breached their release conditions.

Harassing communications Reports of harassing communications through Facebook are under investigation.

Mischief Two different occurrences regarding individuals causing problems were reported.

In the Carlyle area there was a fight outside of a business reported. One was lodged in cells.

Property damage was reported in Carlyle.

In the Carlyle area windows were smashed.

Theft There is a theft investigation underway in the Carlyle area.

There was a break and enter including a theft, which is under investigation in Carlyle.

RCMP are seeking information regarding the theft of two Canada Goose jackets from mannequins at the casino.

Narcotics One drug investigation took place the first week of the New Year.

Uttering threats Reports of threats were issued in Carlyle and Arcola.

Am I a police officer?

By Staff Sgt. Darren Simons I remember when I was first sworn in as a member of the RCMP. I had attained my childhood dream and I knew I was fortunate knowing that it is not something everyone has been able to do.

When I subsequently graduated from Depot and received my badge I had become a “Police Officer,” a Mountie. I had a badge, handcuffs and a gun and I thought to myself: “I am now a Police Officer” or was I? I was still a son, a brother, a child, a cousin, a nephew and a grandchild. becoming a police officer? No, I hadn’t. In reality, I had more to come.

I became a coach and volunteer and I moved with my career and met my future wife. When we got married, I became a husband, son-in-law, brother-in-law and uncle all in one day. We were later blessed with the birth of our son and I became a father.

I continued to volunteer and coach and gained more friends and family, in addition to losing some to natural causes and tragedy. Thoughout the last 25 years I was still a Police Officer, or was I? I realize that I am a “Police Officer” but I know that I am not just a “Police Officer.” That is what I do; however, it is not what I am, and not what defines me. I am first and foremost “Me”- a family member, a friend, a neighbour, a coach, a volunteer. I am not infallible, or without fault, rather I am just a regular person. Unfortunately, to many

I am a “Police Officer” and they do not see me as anything else. They forget that I have a family, friends and a life outside work. They forget that I am a person with feelings, aspirations and hopes, an individual, like many others- except that “I am a Police Officer.”

All I ask is that when you see a “Police Officer,” remember they are much more than that, just as everyone else is much more than their chosen profession.

Start your engines: Annual Optimist Snowmobile Rally to be held Jan. 28 Kelly Running Observer Staff

In 2016, the Annual Optimist Club of Arcola Snowmobile Rally was hosted, but weather didn’t cooperate and there was no snow; however, many people were still out to support the efforts of The Optimists.

This year the weather has decided to cooperate and there has been substantial snowfall in the area and The Optimists are looking forward to the 24th Annual Snowmobile Rally, which will be held on Saturday, Jan. 28.

The event is based out of the Prairie Place Hall, where breakfast will begin – courtesy the Arcola Fire Department – at 8 a.m. and run until 11 a.m.

Registration will take place from 10 a.m. to noon; the registration fee is $20 per rider and enters you for a chance to win over $8,000 in rider prizes.

Riders have the opportunity to head out on over 100 km of scenic Moose Mountain Country trails after registering between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

While out on the trail snacks and hot chocolate will be available as well.

Trail guide, Kevin Paton, says, “We have snow this year and will be using the Moose Mountain Snowmobile Club’s trails, so we’ll be working hard alongside them to get the trails marked up – they’re always well marked for people to follow – and the Moose Mountain Snowmobile Club always has the trails groomed for us as well.”

Carlyle Legion news 2017 is already proving to be a busy year for the Carlyle Legion. The largest event we have taken on will happen on the 19th of January when our Legion hosts the Provincial Legion Curling. This will involve rinks from Legion branches all over the Province. As this is one of the first times the event has been held in the south, we are hoping for a good turnout of Legion curlers. Registration will take place on Thursday evening at the Legion hut with the opening ceremonies on Friday morning at the curling rink. The games will begin on Friday afternoon and continue until Sunday depending on the number of rinks entered. It is going to be an exciting weekend.

We received a grant from Affinity Credit Union to use toward the expenses of the curling bonspiel and are very appreciative of it.

The refinishing of the floor in the Legion hut is finished and the floor looks great. We are planning to repaint the main room and renovate the bathrooms as soon as we can. This will make the facility much more pleasant for people to use. Because we are a small group, work progresses slowly, dependant on the available work force.

Another Millennial rant...

The other day I read an article titled, “Under 35? You face at least 3 tough challenges in the 2017 economy;” I’m under 35, so CBC got me with their title. Millennials apparently have to worry about precarious work, high home prices, and questions of whether retirement will ever be a Kelly Running reality.

Aside from a couple of interObserver Staff views with people who have spent their earnings on “vacations and snowboarding,” the struggle was real. How in the world do you save enough to put a down payment on a house? I’m actually to the point I feel like I might be renting for life, because at the same time you need to be saving for retirement.

Then I zipped down to the comment section. Bad idea. An individual in the comment section decided to say that previous generations had it much harder than the current generation… Well, yes and no, yes his view was correct because I don’t know what he went through, but no he’s not correct because he didn’t grow up in this generation. He then mentioned that his own kids were a bunch of snowflakes, that they have it too easy and expect everything to be handed to them.

I was never once told that anything would be handed to me, I was told I could do anything, which has caused some issues figuring out what I wanted to do with my life and I still question it; BUT, I was told I could do anything if I applied myself and worked hard. Since I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, I simply applied myself to school and learning everything I could, in high school I was a 90-something student and by the time I figured out university I managed to go from struggling to the Dean’s List. I was taught hard work and respect get you places, and they did.

It’s more so the financial situation. I save and save and feel like I’ve gone nowhere in being set for life. A quick Google search brought up information, which took inflation into account, looking at costs in 1975 versus 2015, in the United States… in 1975 a new house cost approximately $48,000 (with inflation $209,417), which in 2015 was $270,200 and college sitting at $3,776 in 1975 (with inflation $16,475) versus $42,419 in 2015. So, although certain things were more expensive like gas and movie tickets, technology has improved thus bringing these costs down, but there are financial concerns for seeming necessities that weren’t quite the same cost as they were then providing more of a burden.

Additionally the Canadian Pension Plan has been said to be running dry essentially. I’m paying into it, but may never actually see any of it because people are living longer in this day and age needing more assistance.

So, instead of saving for a house, I’m saving for my retirement already… I admit, I don’t know much about financials, but in my mind that seems like a better use of my savings at this time. They definitely need a class in school regarding financials, the best ways to save, what the stock exchange is (I own no stocks because it would create unnecessary worry for me. I just know history and that means I know Black Monday – the Wall Street Crash before the Dirty Thirties hit – so the entire market system we use, the stock exchange, everything, actually terrifies me.

Knowing me, knowing you I had been part of two, maybe three conversations with a woman before she and I worked together in a community group. I had an idea of who she was…or at least who I thought she was.

But I quickly discovered my perception was a bit off. She was funnier and more carefree than I had suspected and we became friends through that experience.

Of course it doesn’t always work that way. Getting to know someone well might reveal things we don’t want to know, and we may come to wish we had never peeked behind that metaphorical curtain since it can change the way we feel about someone.

With distance an image is more easily cultivated and maintained.

I took part in a songwriting workshop a few years ago led by one of my favourite musicians. As much as I was excited about the event, part of me was nervous. What if he didn’t live up to my expectations? What if he said or did something that was disappointing or not in keeping with the image of who I thought he was?

The problem with getting to know someone is--we get to know them. And that means getting to know them as they really are—not as what we thought or perhaps even wished. Becoming familiar results in becoming real…and there can be some pitfalls with that.

The saying ‘familiarity breeds contempt’ goes back to ideas from an Aesop fable, and even though his moral was different from how we use it today, the saying has endured. It’s the feeling that the more acquainted we become with someone, the more we discover their shortcomings and the easier it is to dislike them. Psychologists talk about the idea of familiarity leading to boredom, frustration and unhappiness. But is it actually possible for it to lead to outright contempt? Real contempt?

To be in contempt is to be scornful and disrespectful; to show disregard for something. Do we

allow over-familiarity to grow to the point of contempt toward our friends, neighbours and fellow citizens?

As we live, work and move within our communities we find ourselves interacting with many of the same people. Our paths criss-cross in business, at social functions, church, sporting events, committee meetings, and organizational gatherings where our roles ebb and flow as participants, observers, leaders, coaches, volunteers, those in charge, and those carrying out the work. It’s as these interactions take place over and over again that we get to know one another better, become more familiar and, potentially, more vulnerable to conflict. Why? Because those interactions are not always going to go smoothly or to our way of thinking. As too many paths cross too many times and baggage from one encounter gets dragged into the next, our resentments build. We have so much history with one another we get tangled up and it colours each new interaction. What happened on a ball diamond a decade ago is remembered. A confrontation at a meeting hasn’t been forgotten. The feeling of being disrespected on that last project is too hard to get past. Our encounters are so loaded with what we know about each other it leads to scorn and disdain for anything the other might have to say.

Meeting singer/songwriter Paul Baloche turned out to be an amazing experience, but even if it hadn’t I likely would have given him extra latitude. We tend to do that. So if we are willing to do that for someone we are meeting for the first time, shouldn’t we be all the more willing to do that for those who are part of our life on a more permanent and important basis--the ones we will continue to live and work amongst--the ones we know well? We have history to be sure, but we also have the heart and hope for what we want to do and where we want to go next--if only we’re all willing to put aside the things of the past. So while it might be true that familiarity could breed contempt, the far bigger truth is that if forgiveness and selflessness undergird that familiarity, it can give rise to the greatest of initiatives and the strongest of communities.

That’s my outlook.

Omens and Portents

Even the non superstitious get a little peculiar about their beliefs at this time of year. There’s something about starting out a brand new year that has us all wondering what to expect and looking for Jocelyn Hainsworth signs that might prepare us for what lies ahead.

There are lots of old wives’ tales about things that are supposed to bring either good or bad luck to the next twelve months. One of my favourites to bring good luck is welcoming a tall, good looking man into your house as your first guest of the year – and it’s important that you open the door to him, not that he should let himself in. I call prejudice here, but apparently welcoming a woman has the opposite effect.

Welcoming a whole bunch of uninvited guests is very beneficial, though, and I remember one year when that happened here and it did turn out to be a very fortunate year, so maybe there is something to that one.

There is the superstition that you shouldn’t take anything out of your house on New Year’s Day unless something else can be brought in, and another that says that you should start your year off with your salt shaker full if you want prosperity throughout the next twelve months.

It is advised by some cultures not to wash clothes or dishes on January 1st because you are ‘washing away’

your good luck and will likely cause a death in the family, but conversely in Japan you are to have your house completely cleaned or Fortune will not visit you for the year. I guess you can decide which tradition you want to follow depending on how ambitious you feel after the big party on New Year’s Eve. And speaking of that party, did you know that the simple things we think are just part of the evening also come from superstition? That kiss we all share at midnight is to begin the New Year with the affection and caring you want to last all year, and setting off fireworks is to make such a loud noise you scare away all misfortune.

There are also good luck friendly foods to consume on the first day of the year; most notably lentils (because they look like tiny little coins, and all leafy green vegetables (again because the green leaves resemble paper money).

The theme through all of these things seems to be that what happens on the first day of January, whether it be good or bad, planned or accidental, sets the precedent for the rest of the year.

So, as you can imagine, when the first thing that happens to you in the wee hours of New Year’s Day as you are driving home from the neighbour’s house party is to get stuck in the middle of the road a mile from home, it gets a person to thinking ... “this can’t be a good omen for 2017!”

And yet, the circumstances weren’t that upsetting. I once read a book on interpreting dreams; the bottom line that the author stressed was that it wasn’t the individual facts of the dream that conveyed a message (if there was one) but the overall feeling you were left with when you woke. Were you troubled? Terrified?

Happy? At peace? No matter what craziness happened in the dream, did you feel threatened, or just amused?

As we pulled on our extra hats and mittens, set the cell phone to flashlight mode, and headed down the road for home the over-riding feeling I had was “We’ve got this”. Once we were home the tractor started on the first try even though it hadn’t been plugged in, we changed into more suitable snow rescue clothing and headed back to free our vehicle. I dug out around the wheels while the snow blower on the tractor cleaned a path wide enough to get us out of the mess. I drove home with no further trouble and before putting the tractor away the driveway was cleared out too – it was 2:00 in the morning on New Year’s Day and we had everything under control.

It would be easy to say that getting stuck was bad luck, and that if superstitions are true, 2017 looks to be trouble, but I can’t help but feeling that luck doesn’t really have much to do with it ... or that maybe we make our own luck. 2017 will be what we make of it.

The toddler is two A week ago, our sweet little baby turned two. How that happened, I have no idea, but when she woke up that morning, she was two. I remember that day two years ago very vividly, I had been in labour on and off for alKrystyn Gillies most 48 hours and we made the decision to have a c-section since I wasn’t progressing and we were ready for a baby already.

Since that day, our life has changed dramatically but for the best reasons. She has always slept good, which has made our lives significantly easier. When she was just over the year and a half, she learned to crawl out of her crib. No fun, because instead of playing with toys or something like that, she will dash across the house, into our room and into our bed, waking every soul, (two and four legged), along the way.

We made the decision to drop her crib mattress right to the floor, making it impossible for her to climb out and potentially hurt herself. This worked really well until two days before her birthday. She goes to bed every night between 8:00 and 8:30 and will sleep until her dad’s alarm clock goes off at 6 a.m. normally, she will have first breakfast with her dad and after he heads off to work, she goes back to bed for a couple more hours.

Two days before her birthday, I had put her back in her bed and apparently must have been tired because I went back to sleep too. I heard her yell mom, which woke me up so I kicked off the warm covers and just as I swung my feet to the floor, she appeared in front of me.

A bit stunned, I looked at her with a puzzled look as she said HI 43 times. Did I forget to put her in her bed? Where did I put her? How tired was I? Then I remembered clearly laying her down and covering her up a few hours before, but how is she standing in front of me right now? Then it hit me. She escaped.

She somehow scaled her four foot crib, hauled herself over the top and dropped to the floor without making a sound. I asked her if she got out of her bed by herself and she tilted her head to the side and smiled her mischievous grin. I asked her if she could show me how she did it and she replied no and headed to the fridge for second breakfast.

I sent my husband a text, explaining what happened and I’m not even sure he believed me. Anyway, later that night, at 4:30 a.m. to be precise, she woke up and started to whimper our names.

Normally she will whine for a few minutes and then settle down and go back to sleep. A few minutes went by and she quieted down, so we closed our eyes to resume our own sleep.

Then I heard it. The sound of feet barreling across the laminate floors, headed straight for our bedroom. Sure enough, a resounding HI was heard followed by several requests for Cheerios. Apparently she can’t tell time and assumed it was time to get up. We tried telling her it was still sleep time and she was having absolutely none of that.

I am awful without sleep. I feel crappy and I’m grouchy and I’ve been spoiled for almost two years and have had the luxury of sleeping at least eight hours every night. How are we going to keep her in her bed? Her bedroom isn’t quite done, I’ve been working hard up there, but it isn’t done. If we transition her into a toddler bed, she will be free to

trash any room in the house.

That will never do. I had to go to extreme measures.

I found a pair of PJ’s that were much too long and I taped the very ends of the toe material together so she couldn’t lift her leg over her crib rail. I essentially made the PJ’s into a sleep sack, as they didn’t bother her ability to sleep, just kept feet together. Thankfully it worked for a few days and we have had a few nights of normal PJ’s and no wake ups or escapes.

Keep us in your thoughts as we plow through the to do lists to finish the bedrooms upstairs so we can make the move up there and into a big girl bed. How is our little baby ready for that kind of step? Like I said, wish us luck!

Brady, Patriots rolling toward another super bowl

By Bruce Penton That Tom Brady will one day be a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame is a foregone conclusion.

But whether he’ll be honoured as a four-, five-, six-time (or more) Super Bowl winner remains to be seen.

Brady, who was suspended for four games at the start of this season due to the infamous ‘deflategate’ scandal and still led his club to a 14-2 record, is the odds-on favourite to be the Super Bowl winning QB when the game is played Feb. 5 in Houston. And since Brady says he sees no reason why he can’t continue to play at a high level until his mid-40s, an unprecedented age for a starting quarterback, it’s possible he may set an SB-winning standard future NFL quarterbacks will never be able to reach.

Brady, almost an afterthought of a draft choice (sixth round) in 2000 by the Patriots following an undistin-

guished career at the University of Michigan, goes for his fifth super Bowl title this year.

New England went 3-1 during the 39-yearold Brady’s four-game absence, and lost only once in the 12 games he started. The Patriots were the No. 1 seed in the American Football Conference, giving them a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Experts give only a couple of teams a chance to derail the Patriot train as it rolls toward Houston. Pittsburgh Steelers won the last seven games of the regular season and are considered the biggest AFC threat to the Patriots. In the NFC, Green Bay had a similar run to end the season (six wins in a row), the rejuvenated Dallas Cowboys earned the No. 1 seed and the playoff-hardened Seattle Seahawks are always tough foes.

But it will be a surprise if Brady, coach Bill Belichick and owner Robert Kraft aren’t standing on the post-game podium in Houston hoisting the Super Bowl late in the evening of Feb. 5. New England won most games with ease, racking up, by far, the best points for-against ratio in the league (plus 191).

The loss to injury of key players, such as receiver Rob Gronkowski, has had little effect on the Patriots’ success. The loss of Brady might be a different story, however.

The player who may go down in NFL history as the best ever to play the quarterback position might be the most irreplaceable Patriot. The football world is likely to see his legend grow through January and on Feb. 5.

The Carlyle Cougars were back in action for 2017 having played on Friday, Jan. 6. The team headed down to Midale where they lost 2-3 in a tough fought battle.

Midale came out to an early lead with a goal in the first period

The second period saw Midale capitalize on a power play with Josh Gustufson finding the net, assisted by Brad Tomiski and Tyler Hoium.

With momentum in their favour, Midale came out with a goal in under a minute of play in the third period with Rylan Kolke scoring, assisted by Tyler Hoium and Garrett Sherlock.

The Cougars rallied in the third and put pressure on Midale though with Carlyle’s captain, Ben Johnstone, earning an unassisted goal; then a second goal this time assisted by Brett Turgeon and Brent McLean.

The Carlyle Cougars then made their way down to Carnduff on Saturday, Jan. 7, where they took on the Red Devils.

Both teams would continue to battle in the second, each scoring two goals: Carnduff’s goals were earned by Trevor Geiger who was assisted by Shawn Gallant and Landon Senchuk in the first and by Blake McMillen in the second. Carlyle’s goals were earned by Jesse Matthewson assisted by Brent McLean and the second was by Ty Currie assisted by Ben Johnstone.

Heading into the third, Carnduff’s Trevor Geiger capitalized on an opportunity, which earned him a hat trick.

Battling for position the Cougars put in the effort, but were unable to claw back with the game ending 4-2 for Carnduff.

Chronicling the stories of Canada’s First Nations PAUL KANE (1810-1871)

In the nineteenth century, Paul Kane sketched, painted and wrote about First Nations people and the vast Canadian landscape. He was the most prominent painter in Upper Canada in his time and may have been the first Canadian painter to earn a living from his artwork alone. His works represent a piece of Canadian history that can’t be found elsewhere.

Born in Ireland in 1810, Paul immigrated to Toronto—then called York—with his parents and siblings in 1819. Though primarily a self-taught artist, he did study painting to some extent at Upper Canada College. His first exhibition of nine paintings in 1834 showed much promise, and he eventually made his way to Europe to study the works of the masters. It was during this tour that he met George Catlin, a lecturer and painter. Catlin felt it was important to capture the life and experiences of First Nations people—whose culture he believed to be on the brink of extinction—in the United States. Kane, inspired by the idea, decided to return to Canada and do a similar thing for the First Nations tribes of the Canadian northwest.

Kane conducted two lengthy trips to Canada during which he witnessed, sketched and wrote about more than 80 First Nations tribes. The first trip took him from Toronto to Sault Ste. Marie and back; the second brought him as far west as Victoria. This cross-country excursion took him two years to complete and required that he travel by canoe, horseback, snowshoe and on foot.

Upon his return to Toronto, Kane began the work of transforming over 700 sketches into vivid paintings that embodied a European esthetic. While the sketches were recordings of what Kane saw, the paintings were interpretative and often favoured the creation of dramatic scenes. The works proved to be popular and he sold many of them, including 12 that were purchased for display inside the Canadian Parliament. Kane also wrote a memoir of his travels that was published in 1859 and is now considered a Canadian literary classic.

In 1871, just over a decade after his ailing eyesight forced him to abandon painting, Paul Kane passed away in his Toronto home. He was declared a National Historic Person in 1937, and in 1971 Canada Post issued a postage stamp in his honour. Today, his works can be viewed at the Royal Ontario Museum and the National Gallery of Canada.

CANADA’S HUNGARIAN COMMUNITY Writer George Jonas, film producer Robert Lanos, and musician Alanis Morissette are among the better-known Hungarian-Canadians of today, but many more have contributed to our national culture. Canadians of Hungarian ancestry have influenced our country’s identity across multiple spheres including the arts, science, business and music. According to the 2011 Census, 316,765 Canadians claim some Hungarian ancestry, making them the 23rd largest ethnic group in Canada.

Hungarians started to immigrate into Canada in the 1800s and up until the First World War, this first wave settled mainly on the Prairies where they became homesteaders, miners and loggers. Later migrants, those from the 1920s onward, more commonly made the cities and towns of southern Ontario their homes. Today, one out of two Hungarian-Canadians lives in Ontario.

The largest influx of Hungarians into Canada—37,000 of them—occurred from 1956 to 1957 due to a large uprising in Hungary against the Soviet regime. This last wave contained a wealthier and more educated demographic.

Hungarian-Canadians have preserved their cultural heritage in Canada in a number of ways including via the publication of several Hungarian newspapers and the establishment of Hungarian schooling at all levels including a Hungarian Studies program at the University of Toronto.

Visiting with Denis and Norma Lamontagne over the Christmas holidays were Lea and Dennis Kushner of Swift Current, Michele and Mike Taillon, Sam and Jake of Calgary, Rennee Lamontagne and Emett of Banff, Paul Lamontagne, Evan and Mac and Lisa Hrabarchuk.

John and Carol Husband traveled to Glastonbury, Conn. to enjoy the holidays with

son, Jason and Pamela and family.

Sympathy to the family of the late Wayne Brimner who passed away on Dec. 28. He was a few days short of his 80th birthday. A funeral service was held on Jan. 7 in Saskatoon.

Sympathy also to the family of Norman, “Bud” Hoey who passed away at Moosomin on Dec. 26. He was 82 years old. His father was

the Section Foreman in Kelso for many years.

By request there will be no funeral service.

Audrey McVicar spent 4 days in Saskatoon where she celebrated Christmas with son, Dale and Heather McVicar and family.

Eileen Shatford spent the holidays in Regina with, Donna and Ken Burnett, Andrew and Lindsey Longstaff and their families.

I had a Christmas card and letter from Tony Thompson. I always enjoy this communication as he touches on world situations, events closer to home and of course an update on his family. It is hard to believe that his older boy, Stefaan is almost

25 years old, Niklaas has completed a twoyear course in Computer Science. Tony had a trip to Venice this past summer and celebrated 35 years in the ministry.

His mother passed away in August at the age of 91 years. Until her passing Tony had Saturday morning phone calls with her and wrote her a letter every Monday morning. He was honored to officiate at her funeral service.

March 17th. Again there was a good response to the supper—it certainly is one way of the seniors helping by supporting the cause---what would Kennedy do without the rink after the many years it has served adults and children with a lot of exercise and fun.

Congratulations to the people of Carlyle for all the gifts and goodies distributed during the holiday season—Kennedy, Langbank have been helping out once again with food,clothing and furniture, I believe every town helps their community all through the year. We are all sharing and caring residents.

OBITUARIES Gloria E. Larsen 1934 - 2016 Gloria Larsen, late of Redvers and formerly of Parkman, passed away peacefully at Tatagwa View, Weyburn, SK on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at the age of 82 years.

Gloria is lovingly remembered by her sister Janice (Robert) Chapman; sister-in-law Marilyn Larsen; nephews, Darcy (Wendy) Pritchard and Axel Larsen; niece Tracey Forsyth-Lundy (Dennis Lundy) and their children, Daniel (Haylee and their daughter Alexia), Jason and Ashley.

Gloria was predeceased by her parents, Axel and Dagmar Larsen, Stepmother Dorothy Larsen and brothers, Harold and Ed Larsen.

A Memorial Service will take place in the Spring.

Myrtle Brehaut It is with mixed feelings that the family announces the peaceful passing of Our Beloved Mother joining Our Dad, singing & rejoicing with our Lord & Savoir.

Myrtle was born June 11, 1924 in Estevan to Merrill & Anna Tromburg, & passed away at the age of 92 years on January 02, 2017.

She met the love of her life, Robert Brehaut, in 1941, & they married December 31, 1942.

Alongside of Robert, they farmed 8 miles south of Wawota. Myrtle was blessed musically, & the Family spent many evenings around the pump organ singing by lamp light.

In 1974 Myrtle & Robert moved to Lethbridge, Alberta. Following Robert’s passing, Myrtle returned to Regina to be closer to her Daughters.

In 2011 Myrtle entered Parkside Extendicare where she resided until her passing.

Myrtle is survived by her Children, Garry (Ruth), Karen, Carlie, Beverly (Bruce), Brian, 4 Grandchildren, 6 Great Grandchildren, & Brother Paul.

Mrytle was laid to rest at a private Family Celebration of her Life.

Happy New Year from our Atom Cougars Danielle Benjamin Sports Contributor After the Christmas break, we got back into our hockey routine with twice a week practices and games on weekends or weeknights depending on our schedule.

We started off 2017 hosting our home tournament. We held a twoday, 11 game, tournament with teams from Rocanville, Redvers, Arcola, and two teams from Estevan. We won our first 3 games and advanced to the A final. We lost to Redvers in the final

so 2nd place for the Cougars. Big thanks to the coaches, players, all the tournament organizers, rink kitchen workers, clock and 50-50 workers, community sponsors for raffle table items, other teams for attending, Mary for stocking the kitchen and to Brent for cleaning our ice! It takes a lot of planning and a lot of hands to pull off a successful tournament and ours definitely was! Thanks again everyone!

Our team will be in a two-day tournament in Redvers on January 14 and 15th. Wish us luck!

OBITUARIES Mary “Irene” Davis Mary “Irene” Davis formerly of Arcola, passed quietly on December 19, 2016 at Estevan Regional Nursing Home. She was born February 1, 1921 at Arcola and spent her lifetime in the Arcola area. She is survived by sons, Darwin (Merle), Dwain (Kathy), four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, sister Isabel Cann and many nieces and nephews. Irene was predeceased by husband Wayne Davis in 1990.

The family wish to thank the Estevan Regional Nursing Home Staff for their compassionate resident centered care; Halls Funeral services for guidance through a difficult time; Prairie Place ladies, family, friends and neighbours for acts of kindness and donations made.

Lorraine Woroniak

Lorraine passed away peacefully surrounded by love, peace and her family, on December 30, 2016, in Abbotsford, B.C. Beloved mother of Tony (Debbie McMahon), Terry (Sylvie Bourget) and Lynda (Jerry Vanc), she will be missed by them and her cherished grand-children, Jessika, Vanessa and Sasä; her sister, Louise Downing, her brother-inlaw, Les Downing, her sisters-in-law, Annette and Dale Van Loo; and many wonderful nephews, nieces and friends.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Ted, and her dear brothers, Maurice and Wilfred.

Lorraine was the third child of four, born in Pipestone, Manitoba to Annette Olivier, from Oak Lake, Manitoba, and Désiré Van Loo, from Belgium. Raised on a farm surrounded by supportive neighbours and nature, Lorraine was later schooled in a Catholic boarding school in Winnipeg. She then worked as a town clerk in Wawota, Saskatchewan.

She married Theodore Woroniak and they established their family in Wawota. Her husband unfortunately died a few years later and she bravely raised her three children.

She is remembered for her quiet strength and generosity, her optimistic outlook on life, her love for her family, her kind heart and her great sense of humour. Special thanks to the caring staff at the Menno Home of Abbotsford for their kindness, professionalism and support.

Respecting her wishes, a celebration of Lorraine’s life will be held in early summer in Virden, Manitoba. Details will be organized by her sons and daughter.

Melda “Ruth” Dixon 1923 - 2016 It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Melda Ruth Dixon (nee Quigley) at the Misericordia Health Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba on Friday, December 23, 2016 at the age of 93.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband Walter Dixon; sisters, Grace, Elsie, Nina, Eileen and her brothers, Don, Jim, and Frank.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Wendy (Leland) and son Wayne (Penelope); cherished grandchildren, Christy, Brad, Chelan (Ryan) and Geoff (Rachel) and great granddaughters, Lily, June, Quinn and Mila. She has a great many nieces and nephews across Canada, England, Scotland and in the USA. Ruth was born in Mawer, Saskatchewan and lived in the following Saskatchewan communities: Bemersyde, Corning, Ryerson, Maryfield, Estevan, Moose Mountain Provincial Park and Carlyle.

She spent the last two years in Winnipeg. For several years she was a teacher in several schools, and spent several years on a farm at Bemersyde. She was active in line dancing, and loved listening to music as well as playing her piano.

She loved cross country skiing and curling. She enjoyed playing card games and shuffleboard. She also loved to feed her birds and did a bird count for the Western Producer newspaper.

With her husband, Walter, they built a cabin in Moose Mountain Provincial Park which was initially a weekend/vacation escape but ended up being a permanent home for many years. Throughout her life Ruth had a tremendous work ethic and an open heart for anyone needing a helping hand. She sponsored a child through World Vision for a number of years. She was a enthusiastic hockey fan and never lost hope that her Toronto Maple leafs would once again win the Stanley Cup! She and Walter made numerous trips to watch their grandchildren, participate in their sports of choice. She also loved baseball and was a huge Toronto Blue Jays fan and cheered them on at every opportunity.

Family was always important to Ruth; as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother she organized and hosted many family gatherings. She loved seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She always greeted them with a big smile when they arrived for their visits.

The family would like to thank the home care staff while she was in assisted living at Devonshire House II, the staff at the St. Boniface Hospital and the staff at the Victoria General Hospital for their care and support. A special thanks to all the nursing staff and health care aides of Cornish 6 at the Misericordia Health Centre in Winnipeg for the excellent care provided to Ruth.

There will be a Celebration of Life gathering for Ruth in Carlyle, Saskatchewan in the summer of 2017. Details will be posted at www.hallfuneralservices.ca closer to that time.

Alida community extends sincerest sympathy to the Couture family on the accidental death of Jonathan Couture of Grenfell, SK on Jan. 3 at the age of 16 years. Jonathan was the son of Denise Couture and twin brother of Anna, grandson of Gilbert and Priscille Couture of Redvers (formally of Alida).

Condolences are also extended to all other family members.

Home to attend the funeral on Jan. 6 for Dorothy Hull at Carnduff were son, Lowell and Betty Hull (Fresno, CA), daughter, Jo-Anne and Lyle Swanson (Zehner, SK), grandson, Joey Hull, granddaughter Rebecca Macalpine (both also of Fresno, CA), sister, Lois and Don Mann (Beausejour, MB).

Also here were nieces (Bob and Ethel Kyle’s daughters), Sharryn and Wayne Black, and Lynn and Ken Hull (all from Calgary), and there were many other relatives in attendance as well.

There were many Alida folks who attended the funeral for Dorothy Hull in Carnduff on January 6. Also attending was Rod and Janice Heise from Lajord, SK. Rod was administer of our RM #32 for a number of years before he moved to Lajord. He reported that he has now retired as of December 31, 2016.

Alida community extends sincere sympathy to the Antonio Boutin families on the death of Antonio on January 8, 2017 at Redvers Health Centre.

RM of Reciprocity #32 and raised their family on the farm before retiring to Estevan and then later to Redvers. Funeral Mass will be held Jan. 13 at Cantal with a fellowship luncheon at Alida Hall. Condolences are also extended to all other Boutin and Poirier family members.

Jan. 8 was the first breakfast of the season held at Alida Hall. There were 45 breakfasts served at this event – way to go Group 3 – The Breakfast Challenge is now officially on.

Act One Productions have now began their weekly drama practices. Unfortunately there will be a change in the cast as Kim Carlsen is unable to continue in his roll and had to withdraw. His character as “Stinkweed” will be filled as soon as possible. Other club members are beginning to make plans for each of their production positions with the menus, decorations, workers etc.. It will surely be a busy time happening around Alida.

Hopefully you got a chance to watch the Meridian Canadian Open Grand Slam of Curling over the weekend – once again there was lots of great curling happening at these play-offs held at N. Battlefield. The Brad Gushue Team (NL) was the winner over Team Edin (Sweden) with an 8-3 score.
