Raina’s Run: Supporting the Saskatchewan Down Syndrome Society Lynne Bell

Four-year-old Raina Miers is a Carlyle Elementary School pre-kindergarten student who also studies dance, creates all kinds of crafts and loves music - both as a listener and an as enthusiastic singer and drummer. She’s even appeared on the cover of The Observer twice.

Raina was born with Down Syndrome and last year, she inspired her family to fundraise and run for the Saskatchewan Down Syndrome Society.

This year, Raina’s Crew will run again in support of Saskatchewan residents with Down Syndrome and their families at the SDSS’s GO21 Regina Fun Run, Sunday, June 3 at the city’s Rick Hansen Park.

The SDSS states: “Our mission is to enhance the quality of life of individuals with Down Syndrome and their families through advocacy, awareness and education to ensure full participation in their communities.”

Or as Raina’s mom Kellie Jones simply says: “They’re my lifesaver. Since the day Raina was born, someone on their board from Regina contacted me.

Through them, I met another mom whose daughter also has Down Syndrome. She’s about two years older than Raina, so any concerns or victories I have or resources I need, she - and the SDSS - are there for me.”

Last year, Jones, Raina’s dad Roger Miers and

her sisters, Tori and Sidney Jones, joined Raina for the family’s first-ever run and fundraised $700 for the SDSS. “Our goal last year was only $200,” says Jones.

“We didn’t know what to expect, so our goal was pretty modest. We surpassed that and thanks to some pretty generous people who supported us, we raised $700.”

“Raina was in a stroller last year, but this year, she’s going to walk the (2017) run with us,” she says.

“Our goal this year is to raise $400 and I’m happy to say that we’re over halfway there - and all of the money raised stays in Saskatchewan to help people with Down Syndrome and their families in this province.”

Jones says the generosity the family has experienced goes beyond the monetary.

“Carlyle Elementary School’s peer inclusion is amazing,” she says. The principal Mr. (Tyler) Fehrenbach and Raina’s teacher, Ms. (Karla) Ilchuk and the entire school community have been just great.”

“I’m just so proud of our community and the peer inclusion that Raina has experienced,” says Jones.

“Having a child with Down Syndrome has opened my eyes in a way that previously, I knew nothing about,” says Jones. “It’s a journey that I couldn’t have imagined and it’s a beautiful journey, too.”

Council supports Carlyle Fun Dayz Lynne Bell

Carlyle Town Council held their regular bi-weekly meeting Wedneswday, May 17 at the Carlyle Civic Centre. Council’s next meeting will take place at 7 p.m.,Wednesday, June 7 at the Civic Centre.

Carlyle Fun Dayz Council voted to support the second annual Carlyle Fun Dayz with $5,000. The Town also agreed to all requested road closures. Carlyle Fun Dayz will take place Saturday, Aug. 19 and will celebrate the community and this year, Canada’s 150th birthday.

Taxes Carlyle Town Council is currently dealing with 26 assessment notice appeals. Tax notices will follow shortly.

Sidewalk Repairs Carlyle Public Works staff will soon be undertaking repairs to sidewalks.

Moose Mountain Air Cadets hold annual inspection Kelly Running Observer Staff

The #723 Moose Mountain Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets hosted their 55th annual inspection on Monday, May 15.

Throughout the year the Moose Mountain Air Cadets were busy. They undertook a Fall Campout at Little Kenosee, RCMP/Regina Tour, Aviation Day in Oxbow, Run and Shoot/Biathlon in Yorkton, Remembrance Day Services, a winter campout at Saskadet, 15 Wing Moose Jaw Tour, Spring Mudroller Campout at Little Kenosee, Operation Fire in Oxbow, and Tri-Squadron Sports Day in Estevan. That was in addition to weekly meetings on Mondays.

This year the reviewing party included Reviewing Officer – Major Stuart Smith, Air Cadet League Representative – Rob Wilson, Commanding Officer – Lt. Derek Huenison, Parade Commander – WO1 Tanner Dufresne, and Squadron Warrant Officer – WO2 Parker Weatherald.

The evening began with “O Canada,” sang by SGT Kendra Ross. The reviewing party then walked through the ranks of cadets. Asking the cadets questions and checking over their uniforms, the reviewing party was very pleased by what they saw.

Squadron Drills were conducted that evening to showcase the squadron’s disciplined, hard work throughout the year.

“It’s good to see the support these youth have and the Saskatchewan Air Cadet League appreciates the efforts you put forth,” Wilson said to the parents and volunteers.

“Be proud of what you’ve accomplished. Continue to work hard and take advantage of all you are able to within the Air Cadet program.”

The hard work and dedication of the Air Cadets was also commended by Lt. Huenison: “I commend each and every one of you for your commitment; I’m very proud of you… This commitment has taught you that you can earn things that instant gratification can’t do; you can’t just push a button. This is hard work and I’ve seen each and every one of you commit to the program. You’re setting yourself up for success. Keep up the hard work.”

These sentiments were reiterated by Major Smith: “You inspire me to do a better job. We recognize the hard work you put in and I encourage you to take advantage of all of the opportunities: travel, pilot’s licence, and more.”

Summer Longie to Compete in North American Indigenous Games Lynne Bell

Eighteen-year-old volleyball player Summer Longie is taking her talent to Toronto. As a member of Team Saskatchewan, the resident of White Bear First Nations will join other elite athletes as they compete at the North American Indigenous Games, July 16-23.

“They’ve been called ‘the Olympics for Indigenous people,” says Longie. “They’re only held every three or four years. In 2014, they were held in Regina. There were hundreds of folks competing, so it’s really exciting.”

“In 2014, the people I know who competed at the Games in Regina say it was one of the most memorable experiences in their lives,” she says. “And they still have friends from all over North America that they made there.”

“I tried out before but I got cut,” adds Longie.

“And I definitely wanted to try out again this year. I didn’t think I was going to make it, but I did.”

The first of three tryouts for the 2017 provincial team was in December in Fort Qu’Appelle. “It was drills and scrimmages,” explains Longie. “The

second one was in Saskatoon in February. It was a two-day tryout. The first day was made up of drills all day and on the second day, we did scrimmages.”

“I wasn’t confident at all that I’d played well enough to make it to the third round, but somehow, I did,” says Longie. “But I didn’t feel like it was a done deal.”

The final tryout meant a return to Saskatoon in March.

“I was just so happy that I made it that far,” says Longie. “There was a Facebook page and the names of the players who’d made the team were released about a week later. That’s when I knew that I would be competing in Toronto.”

“I thought ‘That’s crazy!’ But I was so happy and I’m super-excited to go to Toronto, because I haven’t been anywhere far.”

Now that Longie is officially a member of the Team Sask Indigenous Games volleyball team and will definitely compete in this year’s Games, she reflects on how reaching her goal required sacrifice, hard work and more than a little help from her friends and family.

“I graduated last year and until then, I played high school volleyball in Carlyle until grade 12, when I

played with the White Bear Cubs and club volleyball with the Redcoat Rebels who are coached by Mickey Adams.” says Longie. “When Mickey found out I made Team Sask, He let me practice with his younger girls. I really owe him a big ‘thank you’ because when he started training me last year, I was only good at one thing and that was hitting. After training with him, I was better at all aspects of volleyball.”

“It definitely made a difference between making it and not making it,” explains Longie. “I didn’t have a coach dedicated to volleyball. But he loves the sport as much as I do.”

Longie also credits the White Bear Education Complex community – especially school principal Sherri McArthur-Cappo – for their support.

“She let me train in the school gym and she let me use the school for a fundraising tournament I had planned,” says Longie. “It makes me so proud to represent the White Bear community at the Indigenous Games.”

“My mom (Renita Paul) drove me to every single practice,” adds Longie. “And my sister Schuyler helps me out a lot, too. She throws hundreds of balls so I can practice setting. And she trains with me, too.”

Longie’s training regime includes workouts with Adams, cardio and weightlifting in the gym and runs up Heart Hill with her sister.

When asked if she has any pre-competition rituals, Longie says: “I don’t have any supersitions or anything like that, but me and my mom pray before every game that I play good and don’t get injured.”

“I’m really excited to go to Toronto, but there’s not a lot of down time. But that’s okay, because I’m there to do a job. We received a schedule with everything on it and we were told: ‘If you want to look at the Niagara Falls, you’d better look at pictures on the internet,’” she says, laughing.

“We fly to Toronto on July 15,” she says. On the 16th, the opening ceremonies are held and after that we practice and play almost all of the time until the (July 23) closing ceremonies.”

“It’s really an honour to represent the White Bear community,” says Longie.“I think it’s cool that we get to do something like this for Native people from all over North America.”

Young authors at G.F.K. published in provincial magazine Kelly Running Observer Staff

Gordon F. Kells students are thriving as published authors. Earlier this year a group of eight students in grades 7 and 8 were selected as finalists for the Polar Expressions Publishing poetry competition.

Now three young authors: Morgan Robertson (Gr. 8), Jessica Moffat (Gr. 8), and Rylee Himmelspeck (Gr. 7) have been published in Windscript, a Saskatchewan high school writing magazine.

Moffat wrote a short story titled “Monkey Bars,” while Robertson and Himmelspeck both submitted free verse poems. Robertson’s is titled, “Body Contact in Ball?” and Himmelspeck’s work is titled “i will.”

Robertson and Himmelspeck’s poems were both works created from an assignment given to them in English class, while Moffat’s short story was a piece

she had written at home for herself.

“I want to be an author, so being published now, I can already say I am an author,” Moffat says proudly.

“I thought I’d just go for it, there’s nothing to lose,” Robertson said.

“I just thought I’d try it; it’s my first year writing poems,” Himmelspeck said. “My first poem didn’t make it [into the Polar Expressions competition], so I thought I’d try again.”

Their English teacher, Morgan Wasylyk, explained that she sought out a variety of competitions this school year for students to enter in order to give more meaning to their work: “The purpose was to give students the opportunity to be published. Each month I would let them know what competitions could be entered and it was their choice if they wanted to.”

them and it’s nice to let them have the freedom to write what they want.”

The three students all agreed that some topics in English class aren’t as interesting to write about as others; but, that overall English is their favourite subject in school. It allows their creativity to flourish, which is something their teacher points out.

“They are exceptional writers,” Wasylyk stated. “Getting to read their work, it’s really very mature. For instance, Jessica’s short story “Monkey Bar,” is actually a metaphor for love.”

Interestingly the magazine is a for high school students to publish in, typically grades 10 through 12 students submit their works, so the accomplishment for the grade 7 and two grade 8 students is exceptional.

“We actually left out their grades when we submitted them, so that those choosing wouldn’t possibly dismiss them based on that since it is a high school publication,” Wasylyk said.

Monkey Bars

By Aleatha (Jessica) Moffat “And she knows,” I said. “She knows holding onto him is just like monkey bars. The longer she holds on, the worse her hands feel, the more cramped they get. Everyone is watching her, waiting for her to drop to the ground, or grab onto the next bar. Dangling, holding onto him with both hands: she can’t push herself forward, or back. She’s too attached.

“Each person has their own set of monkey bars and each goes at their own pace. He has moved ahead of her by so many new lovers, so many bars. Her face is twisted, because she knows she has to grab the next bar, and move on. The sun is shining on the metal beneath her fingers, a flame under her palms. Her hands are slipping. She’s going to drop.”

“Mommy?

What happens if she drops?”

Her wide blue eyes look up to me, filled with wonder and awe. For a split second I swear I see the stars.

“When she gets the strength to get back up, she will get to start on the next bar,” I whisper to her, wrapping an arm around her. I need to stay calm. It’s just a story.

“If she stays on the bar forever?” She leans in closer, her tiny hands on my thigh now.

“Her hands will ache with a constant pain, and she’ll never be able to reach for the next bar because they hurt.”

“And if she only grabs the next bar with one hand?”

“She won’t be able to fully move on.”

“What would that do to her?”

“Hurt her. If she can’t move with both hands she won’t be able to go on.”

“Is that you, mommy?” Her brown hair curls around her fingertip as she buries her face behind her hands, peeks between the cracks of her fingers at my hands. She stares at them as thought she can see the blisters at the base of my fingers.

And the burn marks at my fingertips.

“Maybe. And it does hurt sweetie, but it’s love.”

She stands and wraps her arms around me, as she did the first gift he gave her before leaving us. “It doesn’t have to be, Mommy. I love you,” she whispers into my ear.

I want to yell at her to never say that, because any of us who have said it has died.

Now, she is infected.

Now she begins on her set of monkey bars.

Weekly RCMP report Lynne Bell

The Carlyle RCMP detachment dealt with several files between Friday, May 12 and Thursday, May 18.

Staff Sgt. Darren Simons says a recent concern is that of golf carts not stopping at stop signs.

“Golf carts are not stopping at stop signs,” he says. “Anything with wheels operating on a roadway is subject to the rules of the road and we will issue tickets if necessary.”

911 calls Two 911 calls were placed during this period. One was a misdial and the other call was abandoned due to a computer issue.

False alarms Six false alarms occurred within the detachment area.

Alcohol-related offences Two intoxicated individuals caused damage at a Carlyle area residence.

Assault An assault with a weapon which took place in the Carlyle area resulted in an individual being charged with that offence as well as several other offences. This individual was lodged in cells until they could appear in court.

RCMP members responded to the report of an assault in Carlyle.

The complainant did not want to press charges, so the incident was recorded for information purposes.

Assistance RCMP assisted an individual who was retrieving their property as the result of a breakup.

Break and enter Police are currently investigating three incidences of breaking and entering from garages in Wawota.

A vehicle in the Manor area was entered by an unknown person

or persons. Staff Sgt. Simons urges members of the public “To secure your property – especially residences, garages and vehicles.”

Child-related investigation RCMP are currently investigating a report of an individual peeking at a child in a washroom in Carlyle.

Criminal harassment An incidence of criminal harassment which took place in Moose Mountain Provincial Park is under investigation by Carlyle RCMP. Police are investigating a case of criminal harassment in the Carlyle area. In this case, a suspicious vehicle was reported to RCMP. Individuals - who had not seen the vehicle themselves - also made numerous reports to the RCMP. Police found that nothing unlawful had occurred.

Harassing communications A case of harassing communications which occurred in the Carlyle

area is currently under investigation by Carlyle RCMP. Mental Health Act RCMP dealt with several files under the Mental Health Act. Mischief Lights were damaged at a Carlyle business. Police are investigating.

Sexual assault Carlyle RCMP are currently investigating a sexual assault which occurred in the detachment area.

Theft A vehicle was stolen in Wawota. Police are investigating.

Two incidences of theft under $5,000 which occurred in the Carlyle area are currently under investigation.

RCMP are also investigating a theft of under $5,000 which occurred in the Manor area. This theft also included the theft of cigarettes, a wallet and a credit card. The credit card was used by the thief.

Items were stolen from a vehicle at Kenosee Lake.

Traffic offences/ Accidents A rollover collision occurred in the Manor area. There were no injuries.

An individual will appear in court for driving while their licence is suspended.

Casing in so many ways

By Linda Wegner Like the rest of the world, our household experiences good times and some not so pleasant; be they health challenges, unexpected financial expenses or just plain old ‘trials of life’, some things are easier to navigate than others.

These past ten days have been adventuresome, to say the least, for me.

One such episode was associated with the simple act of weeding.

As I stood to dig out a particularly stubborn plant, I lost my balance, banged against the house and worst of all, in an effort to steady myself I put my hand against the metal siding. My hand slowly slipped down the wall until it made contact with a sharp piece of pipe. Simply put, a quick visit to the emergency department, a lot of wincing with pain and needles and a trip back

home with stitches has ended my weeding for awhile.

Although that wound continues to throb, it is other matters that have caused greater stress but I’ll spare you those details. Mulling over matters, a Scripture verse found in 1 Peter 5:7 is both a challenge and a comfort: “Casting all your care upon Him for He cares for you.”

I’d like to say that I’ve done that, clapped my hands and now can declare that my stress has been totally eliminated but that simply isn’t true. In an effort to follow Peter’s directions, I decided to check more carefully into a few definitions of the word “casting”. People’s Personalities

The other day in the office we had a conversation about personalities and the Myers-Briggs test.

The test points to your personality type out of 16 different ones classifying you as either introverted (I) or extroverted (E), intuitive (N) or sensing (S), Thinking (T) or Feeling (F), and Judging (J) or Perceiving (P). The 16 personalities Kelly Running come through the different comObserver Staff binations of these four different aspects.

These four personalities are split into four personality types: Analysts, Diplomats, Sentinals, and Explorers, according to the site I used.

I’ve taken a free online version of the test at different times in over the last couple of years and I typically come out as INFP called the “Mediator,” although I have came out as INTP “Logician” as well. My thinking and feeling scores the last time I took the test was 46 Thinking and 54 Feeling.

The conversation in the office went to similarities and differences of each of our types. I find that knowing someone’s personality type actually helps you understand them better because it’s oddly accurate in stating how people think and will react in certain situations.

My friend, who is an INFJ originally asked me to take the test – that personality type in particular is drawn to these tests and knowing about people. She explained that it is something they actually did in school to determine what career path they should choose.

Oddly enough, my personality type is drawn to becoming an author… so, somehow with all of my uncertainties through what I wanted to do with my life in high school and university, I fell into a job that fits my personality according to this, which I find quite interesting.

One of the biggest things we discussed was after first taking the test and reading about our personalities how we didn’t really realize things. For example, one of my coworkers stated that they hadn’t realized not everyone spends time in their head; it’s not that she’s daydreaming, to be honest I spend a lot of time in my head too, it’s that she’s constantly thinking and questioning things, asking herself questions and seeking answers. A lot of life can be figured out by simply thinking on things, but to others it looks like people who do that are daydreaming and are not in the now.

That’s not quite the case, although you can travel quite a ways in your own head.

It’s an interesting way to understand people, if you know their type essentially you can get along better with any type of person.

A couple of years ago, Shelley Slykhuis did a smaller version of this test which separated personalities into four general types: orange – risk takers, green – thinkers, gold – task oriented, and blue – heart or feelings.

When I first walked into the gym she asked if I would like to participate and I physically backed away from her unconsciously saying, “No, that’s quite alright.”

Afterwards she came over and asked if I would be interested to fill the test out and figure out my colour. I agreed and she smiled, she said that she suspected I was green because of my reaction when she offered me the test. I had been given no time to prepare for the test and I needed time to think about if I wanted to do it. Sure enough once I completed the test I was green.

So, I find it quite interesting to think about the numerous differences between people and how the world is made up of so many different people with vastly different personalities.

Jump, drive or paddle wherever it takes you From the moment I started school until the day I graduated, I attended four different schools in towns and cities of different sizes, but I always lived within walking or biking distance of the school’s front door. Students like me were often fascinated by the big yellow school busses that brought others to class. It seemed like such a fun way of getting to school.

Shelley Luedtke I loved the occasional opportunities when we got to climb those steps onto the bus, decide where to sit, and be taken on field trips, or to someone’s birthday party.

For bus kids it was more of the same. Town and city kids felt like we were riding in style.

We are people on the move. That’s why disruptions to how we get from one point to another can become so problematic. Cancel a flight, re-route traffic for road construction or encounter waters that are too rough to cross and it can bring out decidedly unpleasant results. Impediments, delays or problems that change how our travel was supposed to go can become quite problematic to be sure.

How we get somewhere can be a function of time, budget and accessibility to choice. There may be a wide array of transportation options available or they could be very limited, depending on where we are starting from and where we are trying to go. And why.

Brides and grooms sometimes look for unusual ways to travel to their ceremony or reception so a portion of their budget will go to horse drawn carriages or hot air balloons or even helicopters to help the couple make a grand entrance. Limousines are in high demand during prom and grad season when it is felt that the grandeur of the milestone should be matched by the luxury of the vehicle. Ask those who

enjoy cruising and they will tell you the activities on the ship are just as enticing as the ports of call. How they get there is as significant as getting there.

Since 1975 BMW has invited renowned artists to create a canvas on a car to race in the Le Mans endurance race. Of course it’s most important that the car’s engine is ready to race but the artistry exhibited on the car adds another layer of interest and excitement to the function of what the car is intended to do. It’s not just about crossing the finish line but making a statement while doing so.

If you talk to a group of people discussing how they prefer to get from place to place you quickly see how individual preferences vary and the method of travel that suits one is decidedly not right for another. Thank goodness for that. It’s why we have such a wonderful array options to choose from to move around. Necessity, creativity, technology, population density, climate, terrain and money have all affected the number of ways we are increasingly people on the move.

Tram, ferry, monorail, catamaran, jet, speed boat, snow shoes, people mover, RV, canoe, ATV, skis, raft, dirt bike, kayak, and the host of other ways we have to move around says a lot about the human spirit and the initiative we continually take to get from point A to point B. Getting there is sometimes the bigger story, while the destination becomes the footnote.

Whether we run, skip or jump on a pogo stick; float on an air mattress or sail on a luxury yacht; take the Maglev in Shanghai, a canal taxi in Bangkok, or an Explorer on the Columbia Icefields, sometimes the goal is to get there, while at other times the journey is what will be remembered.

The destination may be the goal of the itinerary, but the way you get there may provide just as much interest. So where are you going to head to next, and how are you going to get there? It’s not so much about arriving in style, as it is arriving in a style that suits you. That’s my outlook.

Fishing weekend

I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend as much as we did!

We always get together with family for May long, usually at my grandmother’s place, but this year, we spent the weekend at the lake. I am not usually a “lake person”, as we never have time to go, but it was a lot of fun this year.

The plan was to head east after I was finished work on Saturday Krystyn Gillies morning, so packing commenced the night before. We had lists upon lists and by the time we were ready to leave, thankfully most of the lists were scratched out. We packed everyone in the truck and headed out.

Earlier in the week, I had made sure we had bought our fishing licences for our neighboring province to the east so we could cast a few hooks into the giant lake we got to stay right next to. So, when we got there, we visited for a few minutes then grabbed our gear and headed to the shore.

It was super windy on the water, but it didn’t phase us! We were fishing no matter the conditions! After a few casts, I remembered how much a disliked my reel from last year. For some reason, it wasn’t working properly and wouldn’t cast out the line further than a few feet.

To say it was frustrating, was an understatement! I finally figured a way to make it work just in time to land

a 35”(ish) Northern Pike. When it hit my hook, I almost fell off the rock I was standing on. I reeled it in slowly, trying to make sure I didn’t let it snap my line. When my husband and his brother asked what I had caught, I told them it felt like a shark!

When I finally got it up onto the rocks, we noticed that I shallow hooked him, so it was fantastic that I managed to get him all the way back to shore. I snapped a photo of him and we tossed him back. A while later, my brotherin-law brought in a large pike as well so at least the fish were biting.

Of course, this is when my reel started acting up again, this time losing a nut off the handle, making it almost impossible to cast without everything falling apart in my hands. Finally, I gave up for the time being and we headed back to the house. My dad said he was going to throw a few more casts, so we left him and his determination to catch something.

As we visited at the yard, I mentioned how my reel had fallen apart and as the guys brainstormed on how to fix it, my dad came bounding up to the trucks holding his phone. There, on the screen, was another jack fish and he was beaming. We headed out again after supper but the fish weren’t biting anything we tried offering them so we called it a night.

The following day, we headed on a little side trip to my husband’s parents farm a few miles to the south of the lake and tried our hand at fishing there too. My husband’s brother mentioned that he and his son caught 11 Walleye there a few nights earlier so we were excited to

try it out.

After a few casts, my reel blew up essentially, sending line out and in the end, I had to cut apart the tangled line and start again. I maybe threw in 12 casts before this happened and when I had it all back together, I immediately snagged on a branch a few feet from the shore and lost my hook. I had to call it a day then because I was really ready to toss the whole works of it into the drink.

Later that evening, we decided to head back to the lake and try again. We noticed quite a few people were fishing near the bridge earlier in the day, so we tried that spot. The fish were jumping almost right out of the water so we hoped we could trick one into biting a hook but to no avail. Not a single nibble, what was the old saying?

A jumping fish never bites? That was a true statement for sure.

When the sun set, we forfeited again and headed in.

While we were in the truck on the way back, my husband thumbed through the mail and noticed one of the stores in the city had fishing rods on sale. I contemplated this, stating that I could probably fight through it instead of buying a new rod. The following morning, right before we left, we threw in a few more hooks and my reel failed almost every time I cast.

That was that, I was buying a new reel for sure after that! As I browsed through the displays later that day, I settled on a slightly more expensive than the last, rod with a different reel set up. I haven’t had a chance to use it yet, but I sure hope I have better luck than last time.

Bring on the fish!

Happy Birthday Dad My first thought this morning was “dad would have been 99 today”. Well, actually, it went more like this ... It’s dad’s birthday, I wonder how old he would be?

And then there was some clumsy not-quite-awake math, and then the startling realization that the answer was one year short of a century. It was startling not beJocelyn Hainsworth cause 100 years old is unattainable – his own father made that mark and a few years more. My surprise at dad’s ‘would have been’ age was all about me. How could someone as young (?) as me have a father who was so old? But some more early morning math showed that it wasn’t unreasonable at all. He was only 37 when I was born.

Early morning math is a little unsettling.

I carried on with my day. This time of year there is always lots to do and between the yard and gardens I had a full day planned. I did it all with my dad close by.

It’s been almost 13 years since he’s been gone. The mourning period is well behind me now, but even during those first few months there wasn’t the devastating kind of grief that some people feel when their parents die. We had lived far enough apart that we weren’t a part of each other’s day-to-day so it didn’t seem like something physical was missing in my life. That’s not to say I didn’t have times that I really did miss him – every once in a while some bit of neighbourhood or family news would come up and my first thought would be “I have to call dad; he’d like to know that.” The letdown I would feel then would be another mini-mourning period, but I would counter it with imagining how our conversation would have gone if he had been available to take it. Memories would warm my heart. It was all good.

Of course, as time goes by these moments happen less. The habit of being able to call dad with news has faded so it is different things now that conjure up his presence ... like his birthday today.

As I spent the day in my flower garden one of my first memory triggers were the fresh crop of volunteer Bachelor Buttons already in bud. They always remind me of dad and a conversation we had when I was very young.

I had asked him what a ‘bachelor’ was and he had explained that it was a grown man who didn’t have a wife or children. My life experience so far had been a large family and a full house. I had a hard time taking in this information. I couldn’t imagine a ‘dad’ without kids.

Dad had gone on to point out that his two brothers – my dearly loved uncles – were bachelors; this information further destabilized my simplistic understanding of the world. It seems like a silly story now, but it must have been quite the revelation to me at the time or I would have forgotten it long ago. And Bachelor But-

tons always remind me of dad.

Dad was a quiet man with a sense of fun that I like to think I inherited a bit of. He wasn’t a heavy disciplinarian. I can remember lots of times mom used the threat “just wait till your father gets home!” when she had reached the end of her rope, but although she might have been implying a spanking, dad wasn’t into corporal punishment. The time I remember most vividly was when I was 12 and dad sat me down for a ‘chat’ about having found a package of cigarettes in my desk drawer.

Naturally, he asked me where I had got them. Obviously, I lied. I fervently denied any knowledge of their existence (all the while seething at the sister who had gotten me into this (it was she who had taken them, convinced me to smoke one with her so I was complicit in the crime, and then decided I should be the one to conceal the evidence). He didn’t believe me (Why would he? With my cheeks burning red with shame

and my fists clenched in rage at my sister? My guilt was obvious.)

He didn’t call me on my dishonesty though. I don’t recall where the conversation went from there but I knew I hadn’t fooled him. It was much worse – I had disappointed him. No physical punishment could have affected my future behavior more than the weight of that lie did. It’s a tactic that I have employed in the raising of my own children. Letting the guilty stew in their own remorse is powerful medicine.

I had posted a tribute to dad’s birthday on Facebook in the morning and at the end of the day I found that a friend had tagged me in a meme about a daughter’s wish to have one more dance with her dad – it was another lovely memory conjured up out of the ether. I loved dancing with my dad.

The perfect ending to the day was the rhubarb pie I made for dessert – always his preference over a birthday cake. Happy birthday dad.

Saskota ball back in action Kelly Running Observer Staff

In the first week of action, the opening day for Saskota Baseball took place on Tuesday, May 16.

The Wawota Pats travelled to Estevan to take on the new Southeast Fireballs. The Pats earned a demanding win scoring 19 runs, while the Fireballs were kept down to 4.

In Carlyle the Cardinals took on the Estevan Tower Wolves in a close battle. The Cardinals, last year’s champions, walked away with a win of 5-4.

The Oxbow Chiefs visited the Arcola Threshers where the Chiefs were victorious by one run with the game ending 6-5.

The Kenosee Cubs hosted the Redvers A’s for the season opener. The Cubs were successful, winning 8-5 over the A’s.

Elsewhere in the league the Windthorst Pirates visited the Carnduff Astros. The Astros earned a win, 10-3, over the Pirates.

May 18 saw the Wawota Pats fall to the Estevan Tower Wolves 15-1, while the Arcola Threshers lost to the Kenosee Cubs 5-3 and the Windthorst Pirates beat the Redvers A’s 6-2 on Friday, May 19,

The class would also like to thank all the parents who helped out with the BBQ fundraiser last week and all the businesses and community members who purchased burgers and hot dogs.

As a result, GFK will send 17 athletes to the District meet in Weyburn on Wednesday, May 24.

NBA’s “foregone conclusion” should be thriller

By Bruce Penton Let’s just call the upcoming National Basketball Association final the Foregone Conclusion.

For the third season in a row, it appears to be a certainty that LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers will tangle with the Golden State Warriors, led by Steph Curry (and this year, a co-leader, Kevin Durant).

At the time of writing, neither the Cavs nor Warriors had officially qualified for the NBA Final, but the Warriors held a solid 3-0 lead on San Antonio Spurs in the West, and King James and the Cavaliers were up 2-0 against Boston Celtics after two blowout victories. The Cavs were 10-0 in this year’s playoffs and it would be an upset of gigantic proportions to see them lose four out of the next six against Boston. (However, it’s not impossible: A LeBron James broken leg? A UFO landing outside Quicken Loans Arena and snapping up King James as he exited the facility? A sudden inability to dribble the ball?)

OK, so on June 1, let’s just assume the Cavaliers and Warriors will tip off the NBA Finals in what is essentially a rubber match stretched out over three seasons. It will be the first time in league history that the same two teams have been finalists three years in a row.

In 2015, the Warriors beat Cleveland in six; last year, the Cavaliers roared back from a 3-1 deficit to win the championship in a Game 7 thriller. Now, basketball fans will be getting what has been a Foregone Conclusion for the last couple of months: The two best teams, the two teams with the most avid TV following, the two teams with the most polarizing players (James and Curry), the undisputed, no-flukes-here, best in the business in a best-of-seven battle that could go either way.

Golden State has its two-headed monster in Curry and Durant, with great support from the likes of Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.

But the Cavaliers have King James, the best player of his generation, this era’s Michael Jordan, who seems to have the ability to carry a team above and beyond the norm. His supporting cast is more than merely decent, too: Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving and Toronto native Tristan Thompson are no slouches.

It should be a dandy.

My pick: Warriors in six.

King James will be dethroned.

5 CANADA: NATURAL SOURCE OF PRIDE SINCE 1867

MAPLE SYRUP

AN OLD CANADIAN TRADITION THAT’S SWEETLY SUSTAINABLE North American indigenous people discovered how to convert maple sap into syrup long ago—possibly thousands of years before our time—and eventually taught the practice to early European settlers in Canada. The first known written account of their methods is a journal entry from 1606, in which French writer and lawyer Marc Lescarbot describes native people collecting “maple water” and then “distilling” it to make syrup.

Today, Canada is the world’s top producer and exporter of maple syrup, making approximately 80 per cent of the global supply. Exports for the year 2015 were valued at $360 million. The majority went to the United States, but Germany and Japan also purchased much smaller, but still significant, People tasting maple taffy, 1945. Credit: Canadian National Railways/Library amounts. The province of Quebec alone and Archives Canada MIKAN no. 3356818 produces 90 per cent of our country’s maple syrup; the remaining 10 per cent is made in Ontario, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.

The sugar maple is the predominant species of maple tree that we harvest sap from, but some producers also use red or black maple. Canada’s eastern provinces fall right within what’s known as the maple belt.

This region of hardwood forest experiences a mild seasonal transition between winter and spring that’s characterized by warm days and frosty evenings. These conditions enable maple trees to convert starch into sugar, which then mixes with water absorbed through the roots.

The maple industry is considered sustainable as the same trees are tapped year after year. Additionally, the amount of sap taken from each tree is never enough to harm it. Many maple trees that get tapped every spring are over a hundred years old.

It takes approximately 40 litres of maple sap to make one litre of maple syrup. These days most producers have given up the traditional practice of collecting the sap in buckets hung from a peg on the tree. Tubing systems, reverse osmosis, and high performance evaporators, among other innovations, have made gathering sap and transforming it into syrup much more efficient than it was even a few decades ago. However, despite this modernization, the old Canadian tradition of “sugaring off” in the spring remains, and each year thousands of families visit the many maple producers scattered throughout the eastern provinces.

Maple syrup is both a treasure and a tradition that all Canadians can feel proud to call their own.

As the third-largest ethnic group in Canada, numbering over 4.7 million (15% of the total population) according to the most recent National Household Survey, those with Scottish heritage represent an integral part of our country’s cultural, political, structural and economic formations. Many of our place names reflect the impact and influence of Scottish presence in Canada. The name Calgary, for example, is borrowed from a Hamlet in Scotland, while Nova Scotia is Latin for New Scotland.

The Scottish were among the first Europeans to establish themselves in Canada, with settlements cropping up as early as the 17th century; however, large-scale migration only began in the late 1700s. Those who arrived in the very beginning were mostly Gaelic speakers from the western Highlands region. They chose to settle down in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Upper Canada (Ontario). Some Highlanders eventually made their way to Red River, Manitoba, where they formed a colony made up of Scottish settlers with Aboriginal wives.

When migration increased still further in the 19th century, newcomers came from the Scottish Lowlands as well as the Highlands and tended to no longer settle in the Maritimes, preferring to make the Province of Canada (present-day Ontario and Quebec) home instead. Many early Scottish immigrants were farmers and artisans, while others were clergymen and teachers. Once here, they played a role in shaping all aspects of Canadian life.

The first two Prime Ministers of Canada—Sir John A. Macdonald and Alexander Mackenzie—were of Scottish descent, as were the founders of the North West Company and many other early business giants.

More recently, well-known Canadians of Scottish descent include film director James Cameron; Nobel Prize laureate and author Alice Munro; cartoonist and entrepreneur Todd McFarlane; musician Sarah McLachlan; and even current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who claims partial Scottish ancestry.

A Graveside Memorial Service was held at Dannevirke Lutheran Cemetery on Saturday, May 20 for Hazel Jorgensen of Saskatoon. Hazel was pre-deceased by her parents Robert and Ethel Kane (Nottingham), husband Carl Erik Jorgensen, her inlaws Chris and Dorothy Jorgensen (Redvers), four brothers Clayton, Ken, Elmer and James and her sister, Mary Goodward. Attending this service were her family - son David, daughter, Shannon and grandchildren Jennifer, Carly, Erika and Conor (all of Saskatoon), her nieces Darlene Sylvestre (Bienfait) and Dot (Lawrence) Zelionka (Alida), nephew Bob (Barb) Goodward (Oxbow), Don Fallis (Estevan), and daughter Shelly Anderson (Brandon) and special friends, Margaret Zelionka (Weyburn), Erik, Shirley Hansen, Dianne Hansen, Valerie Hansen and family (all of Redvers), and Edel Cowan (Alida). A fellowship luncheon was held at Dannevirke Church following the committal.

Visiting over the long weekend with Garnet and Jean Ball were Garrett all and Natasha Osmond and their two dogs Duke and Maddie all of Airdrie, AB. Margaret Peet spent the Victoria long-weekend in Regina visiting her mother Claire Germain and sister, Pauline Craggs.

Hope everyone had an enjoyable Victoria long-weekend. Weather was fairly decent, very little moisture, lots of wind but still warm. The farmers are making headway with their seeding (leaving lots of flooded acres, but otherwise moving right along – lucky if one doesn’t get stuck). Do believe

one will likely begin to see some of the seeding being completed soon (another good week, anyway) – let’s hope.

I haven’t done any gardening yet (as men have been too busy in the field) so my garden area has to wait (still fairly damp out there anyway).

I’m in no hurry. The grass mowing keeps one busy anyway. Noticed that my rhubarb plant is expanding and growing by leaps and bounds, guess one could begin using it now after having it transplanted over a year ago. Will soon transplant my flowers into their pots and garden spots, now that the long weekend is over plants should be safe from frost. Say that 40-day weather saying should just about be done – no more strong winds (could that be true)?

The month of May is coming to an end very quickly now (8 more days) and we’ll be welcoming the month of June. That means an extra busy time for teachers and students. Graduations will be coming up soon too with lots of planning going on and those dreaded exams – oh well always something bad with the good – good luck students, the month will go by quickly I’m sure. Also make sure you’ve got your Slow-pitch team put together and are entered in Alida’s Sports Day which is coming up shortly in June – it’s always a fun day. Hope to see you there.

Visiting with Eunice Rogers last week was her son, Dwayne from Medicine Hat. He spend several days helping with some outdoor chores. Also visiting was Florence (Down) White of Regina along with her daughter, Betty Rader and granddaughter, Rochelle.

Florence was reminiscing about her employment at the Wawota hospital in 1948 as a laundress.

Phil and Carol Reddekop motored to Saskatoon on the weekend of May 13th to attend the 80th birthday celebration for Phil’s aunt, Ann Dyck.

While there they also visited with Carol’s aunt, Stella Enns.

Sympathy to all of the family of the late Ron Bratvold. He passed away May 10 at the age of 65 years.

His funeral service was held at Midale on May 15th.

Sympathy also to George Campbell and his family and the Brisbois family on the passing of Shirley Campbell. She passed away on May 14th at the age of 59 years. Her funeral service was held at Fairlight hall on Thursday, May 18th. Shirley will be remembered for her love of baking and abundance of Christmas goodies she shared with the public.

Sorry I missed putting this in my news. I wanted to commend Blake Lamontagne on the great effort he made to participate in the Disabled Waterskiing this spring. He travelled to Australia for several weeks of training before being joined by his mother, Melanie and brother Blaine.

Although he was hoping for better results the journey was important and the purpose of the journey even more so!

How nice to see that the Wawota Pats Baseball Team will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of fame on August 19th. They were started in 1952 and have had great success through out the years.

Last Thursday the 3 and 4 year olds from The Wee Care Day Care in Wawota enjoyed a tour of our local museum. They had many hands on activities which included; pretending to churn butter, experiencing washing clothes on a scrub board and with a clothes plunger, viewing pictures through a view master and a stereoscope and having their pictures taken in the Democrat. It was reported that their favourite part of the tour was the cookies.

quilt, which is being raffled off this summer. Tickets will be available all summer. The beautiful work of art was created by the local Piecemakers Quilt Club.

They are currently raising funds for the Canada Day fireworks during their 150th celebration.

An entire day has been planned for Canada Day in Redvers to celebrate. This includes their fifth annual slo-pitch tournament being held by the Twisted Sisters: Alicia Stewart, Nadine Pryde, and Joleen Colleaux. The fundraising efforts began when three sisters decided to participate in the MS Bike tour in Waskesiu as a sisters’ weekend. During their first few years the funds raised were donated to MS research (just under $15,000), while recently they’ve also donated to community organizations in Redvers as well including child care centres, swimming pool, arts centre, and the ball diamonds (approximately $5,000).

The Redvers Rec Centre is also finalizing plans surrounding kids’ activities, but there will be a free swim day at the Rec Centre on Canada Day. Another fun attraction Redvers has planned is the Redvers Arts Council’s 150th Art Display. Gwen Arthur explains, “We’re hoping to have 150 pieces of artwork to display. We have local people submitting to as far away from Regina.”

Contact Arthur at 306-452-3855 to enter a piece of artwork. Art must be created in 2017 and are encouraged to be Canadian themed. They accept any type of art including sculptures, paintings, *drawings, homemade jewelry, etc…

Entries must be done by Thursday, June 15, and must be ready to be displayed.

The day will begin with a pancake breakfast in the morning. Throughout the day a concession will be available serving hot dogs and hamburgers. For supper P&A Catering will be spit roasting a pig on site, something Hainsworth says is quite special.

Tickets can be pre-purchased at the Log Cabin.

“Tickets will be available there too, but it is a pig roast and once we’re out, we’re out.”

A parade will be held at 1 p.m. on July 1st , bouncy castle, Canada Day cake, music and karaoke will be held from 4 p.m. until it’s time for fireworks.

To enter the parade with a float, decorated bicycle, golf cart, etc… contact the Log Cabin at 306452-3276.

“Last year we had quite a few antique tractors and vehicles, which entered the show ‘n shine following the parade,” Hainsworth explained.

During the day the CIBC, Credit Union mascots, and the Redvers mascot will be in attendance: Percy, Fat Cat, and Ricky.

A dunk tank is also booked for the day. Currently they have a large list of volunteers to sit on the bench, “some of them are teachers,” Hainsworth said.

Redvers wants to make it festive, so boys and girls are encouraged to wear their Disney princess dresses or superhero costumes and group pictures will be available of the kids.

Valerie A. Young June 23, 1937 - April 13, 2017 It is with deep sadness that we announce that Valerie “Val” Andrade Young (nee Hoskins) passed away on April 13, 2017 at the Victoria General Hospital. She was born on June 23, 1937 in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Val had a long and fulfilling teaching career specializing in children with social, emotional, and academic difficulties. A love of travel brought Val around the world, to visit South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Scotland, England, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Madagascar, and Russia.

She was predeceased by parents Marjorie and Clive Hoskins of Craven, Saskatchewan, husband Lorne Young of Carlyle, Saskatchewan, and sister Anne Ismond of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Val is survived by her husband Roy “Mac” McGregor, sister-in-law’s Audrey Young of Carlyle, Saskatchewan and Velma Clark of Victoria, BC, brother-in-law Glenn Ismond of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and many beloved nieces, nephews, step-children, and step-grandchildren.

You can make the world a better place by making yourself a better person. Val definitely made a difference in this world. Rest in peace until we meet again.
