Happy Nun STARS fundraiser soars with $21,356 raised Kelly Running Observer Staff

STARS Air Ambulance is something that people in rural communities need. It’s importance is constantly demonstrated and when the Humboldt Broncos crash occurred on Friday, April 6, the world rallied together for the survivors, their families, and the families of those who passed in the tragedy.

Seeing that response the graduating class of Stoughton School wanted to do something in honour of the Humboldt Broncos, their classmate Trey Stocker was playing for the Broncos but had grad photos with the Stoughton class as he planned to graduate amongst them, so was not on the bus. After a discussion, the graduating class approached Leon and Gayla Gilbertson about hosting a STARS fundraiser in memory of the Broncos; a cause that the Gilbertsons were more than happy to support.

“It’s been an emotional time for everyone in Saskatchewan,” Gayla said. “In small towns where we have to drive for everything and nothing is close, we understand the importance of emergency services and STARS. And if you’ve ever wondered why you live where we

From Front page - Happy Nun STARS fundraiser Frank Bedecs with Bedecs Ready-Mix presented official Humboldt Bronco flags to STARS – to put up at each of their bases – and to Trey Stocker of Stoughton. Stocker was playing with the Humboldt Broncos, but was not on the bus that day as he was having grad photos taken with his Stoughton classmates. Stocker is the first of the team presented with the flag, but it is Bedecs intention to give one to each of the team.

“We sell flags and flag poles [at Bedecs ReadyMix], so when the accident happened we phoned the Town of Humboldt to see if we could purchase a Humboldt flag to fly,” Bedecs explained. “The administrator went silent and I asked if there was a problem. She said they didn’t actually have a flag and I told her we’d take care of it. The manufacturers did them at cost and the first flag we had was sent to Humboldt immediately. It was up by the next Friday, for the first funeral.”

Sales of the flag are going to the SJHL Assistance Program.

Later on in the evening an auction was held, which saw numerous big ticket items including jerseys donated by the Big Six Hockey League. A jersey from each of the teams was donated with a “Broncos” nameplate on the back and auctioned off individually. The Carlyle PureChem Cougars jersey was the sought after item out of those there.

There was also a surprise auction item – a team signed Phoenix Coyote jersey – which was very popular.

Following the bidding action, Saskatchewan’s singing sensations Brad Johner and the Johner Boys performed.

It was a beautiful evening of remembrance and a way to honour the Humboldt Broncos through a local connection in a meaningful way.

Carlyle & District Lions donate 35K to charities and community causes

The Carlyle & District Lions Club dispersed $35,000 dollars to charities and community causes on Tuesday, May 1 at the Happy Gang Club. Lion Wayne Wilson - chair of the club’s annual March fundraising supper - said: “At this year’s supper, we raised $35,000, which we’re distributing to 22 groups tonight. This money was raised at our March supper and I’d like you to mark your calendars for our next annual Lions supper, which will take place Thursday, March 7, 2019.”

Pictured are representatives from organizations who received Lions’ donations and who were in attendance. In addition (not pictured), the Carlyle & District Lions donated: $3,000 to the Carlyle Sports Arena, $1,000 to the Moto Cross Club, $2,000 to STARS Air Ambulance and $2,000 to the Lions Club Guide Dog program in Oakville, Ontario, which was matched by an anonymous donor, making the Carlyle club’s total donation to the Guide Dog program $4,000.

Weekly RCMP report Kelly Running Observer Staff

Staff Sergeant Darren Simons would like to reiterate the importance of following bicycle laws: “There’s been too many people that just go through stop signs as if they didn’t exist. I’d hate to see repeat offenders be ticketed even before they have their driver’s licences. Follow the Traffic Safety Act and talk to your kids about how to properly ride their bike around town.”

The Carlyle detachment of the RCMP responded to a variety of calls between Thursday, April 26, and the morning of Thursday, May 3.

911 calls Listed here are 911

A child called 911 from an unregistered cell phone. RCMP were unable to locate the child, but knew it originated in Carlyle. Patrols were made, but I didn’t appear anything was out of sorts and the child didn’t seem distressed on the phone.

Assault There was an assault reported in the Manor area. The witness of the assault did not get the licence plate of the vehicle that drove away from the scene.

An assault in the Kisbey area was determined to be unfounded.

An investigation into an assault in the Carlyle area is being conducted. Two individuals were lodged in cells for the evening.

Assistance RCMP assisted EMS on a call with a patient.

Members offered advice and support for someone possibly leaving a violent relationship.

Assistance was given to the Carlyle Fire Department with a fire in the Carlyle area; members also assisted with a fire in the Manor area.

There was an abandoned car reported for blocking access to the complainants property.

A child welfare file in the Carlyle area was opened.

There was a well-being check completed.

A spike on a highway was removed.

An off-duty member observed a person removing remnants of road kill from a highway.

It was partially frozen to the ground. Members have decided to send the individual a small gift.

Failure to comply An investigation was conducted regarding an individual reportedly failing to comply with their release conditions.

This was determined to be false.

There’s an investigation into an individual for breaching their conditions by contacting an individual they are not to be in contact with and is allegedly harassing them.

False alarm There was a false alarm in the Carlyle area.

Fraud There was a report of fraud was determined to be a civil matter – buyer beware.

A fraudulent email scam saying they are with Revenue Canada and you will be arrested if you don’t pay is once again quite prevalent.

An individual reported a fraud where they sent money down to the United States for a rental site, but never received the rental. Again this is considered a buyer beware situation.

Alcohol related offences An impaired driver was reported in the Carlyle area. RCMP located the individual and arrested them. Their screening test showed a blood alcohol content of 200 mg and 210 mg.

Youth were reported to be drinking while walking up and down streets in the Carlyle area. RCMP were unable to locate them.

An intoxicated individual was reported for causing problems at a residence.

There was a family member that damaged property at a residence, which is under investigation.

Intoxicated individuals were reported for causing property damage in the Carlyle area.

The caller was not willing to cooperate.

Two intoxicated individuals were reported at a residence: one drove away impaired prior to police arrival and the other was transported to

hospital for treatment.

There were two intoxicated individuals that were causing issues: one was given a ride to another residence and the other was arrested and lodged until sober.

Driving infractions Two tickets for uninsured motor vehicles ($580) were issued.

Two were stopped for intersection related issues: one was given a warning and the other was given a ticket ($230).

Approximately 30 drivers were stopped for speeding: half of those were given warnings, while the other half were fined. One was stopped for speeding and given a warning as well as warnings for not having their driver’s licence on them and for inadequate mirrors.

The top fine for speeding was for $218.

This individual was also given a warning for excessive damage to their windshield. The two other highest fines for speeding were for $174.

Six people were fined $175 each for failing to wear their seatbelt.

A semi-driver was stopped for not having an up-to-date log book as well as for weight and dimension regulations.

Inspection tickets were issued for obstructed licence plates; licence plates on the wrong vehicle; inadequate muffler, taillights, daytime running lights, headlamps, obstructed windshield, and window tint.

Tickets were issued to people failing to produce their registration ($100) and another for an unsecure load ($175).

An erratic driver was reported in the Kenosee area and is under investigation.

Theft An X-Box was taken.

It was later returned.

This occurred in the Carlyle area.

There is an investigation into an ex-employee stealing fuel.

Information RCMP received information regarding the trafficking of drugs in Redvers, however, the information was limited.

Mischief An individual was reportedly knocking over garbage cans in Wawota. This matter is under investigation.

Uttering threats An unsubstantiated claim in the Carlyle area was reported.

There is an instance of uttering threats currently under investigation.

Carlyle Town Council held their regularlyscheduled meeting Wednesday, May 2 at the Carlyle Civic Centre. Council’s next meeting will take place at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 16 at the Civic Centre.

The buzz may be out and about in town, but I wasn’t sure how to word it. After six years here at The Observer – my first “real job” – I will be moving on at the end of this month.

Last week I wrote about graduating and having wanted to go into the RCMP, well 10 years later I applied and I recently received a call that I have Kelly Running been conditionally accepted into Observer Staff Depot.

I was trying to put off writing this as I wasn’t sure if I could find the right words, but I have learned so much here and have enjoyed the communities that our paper covers immensely.

When I think about what I will miss most of this area – you never know maybe if I graduate Depot [I say if because I’m told it’s hard work and long days] I’ll be placed in Saskatchewan and maybe even near the southeast – what comes to mind though is the people.

Everyone that has ever called me, sent me an email, a letter, a thank you card – you’ve all made my heart soar. It solidifies that what local newspapers do is important and it told me that I was doing something that the communities we service appreciated.

I’ve had a great amount of support over the years from those that I’ve befriended here as well – there are some truly great people here. My co-workers over the years, those with the United Church that took me in when I first moved here – they all helped me find myself in my new community, as I sat living in a fifth wheel trailer for the first month wondering if I had made the right decision.

I then got into coaching volleyball with Eugene Brown and from there met an abundance of amazing families from throughout the southeast who came to play for the Vipers. This is something that I’m going to miss immensely – I know you can coach anywhere, but it’s not the same people and families… and at the end of the day that’s what life is about – those connections.

Bree Ryan kindly got me into playing volleyball in the local ladies league, which has been amazing and again I have met so many fantastic people through this means.

And to Michael Ellis for talking me through a decision last year. I was feeling as though I needed a change and after my sister and her boyfriend encouraged me to become a pilot; I took an introductory flight class in Estevan. It was an amazing experience getting to fly a plane and it’s something I could see myself doing, but I wasn’t sure if it was the right move.

When I returned to Carlyle that day I went for a coffee and Michael happened to be having lunch, so I asked if I could interrupt him. Of course he let me and I spoke to him about how he came to where he is today; he told a story of coming full circle. Of having once worked in a bakery when he was younger, to becoming a pastor, to deciding to open his own bakery and coffee shop. My story although different followed the same full-circle – why would I randomly choose to become a pilot when my intention out of high school was to join the RCMP? When I was in grade 12 my parents encouraged me to get a degree and life experience before applying to the RCMP and if it was still something I had wanted to do down the road then to go for it. Their wise words have definitely left me more prepared today than I would have been at 18-years-old.

I would also like to thank all of the RCMP members that have worked or are currently working in Carlyle. They have been encouraging and supportive as I look to make this change in my life, which I appreciate greatly.

Listening for what isn’t said It doesn’t seem to matter how many times it is reworked, the list of “Things You’ll Never Hear Your Mother Say” always makes me smile. Nuggets like: If everyone else is doing it I guess it’s okay; Just because you were too sick to go to school today doesn’t mean you can’t go hang out with your friends now; or When you My Outlook get there, you get there; no need to Shelley Luedtke call. They are funny because they stand in contradiction to what moms ‘always’ say.

Mothers are attributed with offering sage advice gleaned from years of experience, and those of us blessed with wise mothers can draw on a treasury of lessons. So yes, it’s easy to find humour in statements that we know wise moms would never say.

We find it easy to celebrate the concept of motherhood. There is a sense that once you have joined this group of women you belong to a club of superheroes who share in the marvelous experience of what it means to be a mom. But there is another side to this that is rarely talked about, because frankly, there are a lot of other things we never hear mothers say. Or at least things they don’t feel they can say.

I’m lonely. I’m inadequate. I’m overwhelmed.

The United Kingdom has established an official government portfolio with a Minister of Loneliness to deal with issues that come with aging, social isolation and…for new mothers. Their survey found that 90% of mothers reported feeling lonely since having children and 54% described their life as friendless after having given birth. At a time when others expect them to bask in the wonderment that is motherhood, they are trying to carve out a life that is now so different--and perhaps not as easy to adjust to as they expected.

There are moms whose daily life and hopes for the future look very different than when they held their child for the very first time. Physical or emo-

tional complexities are part of a parenting picture they did not anticipate. These are moms who wonder if they are up to the challenge, question whether or not they can deal with the future, and often don’t get the kind of support they are due. But it’s hard to talk about feeling inadequate when few people know the situation.

We speak highly of the important role of mothers and the work they do but then seem to slip easily into a critical mindset when it comes to reacting to the realities of childhood and adolescence--and beyond. There’s rarely a shortage of opinion about how a child is behaving--and little reluctance to share that opinion--no matter how uninformed. Yet a simple word of encouragement could, instead, relieve a mom who is overwhelmed.

I was sitting with a group of women, visiting over coffee, when one began speaking about the difficulties she was having with her daughter. We tried to encourage her and very quickly others began sharing struggles they had, or were continuing to have with their children. It didn’t betray confidences, nor did it put anyone’s child in a bad light.

It wasn’t an attempt to pry into each other’s lives or fish for gossip. It was a group of moms. Talking.

Saying things we rarely hear moms say. I’m overwhelmed. I feel so inadequate. I’m lonely.

Later, that mom was commended for being so brave. Brave? Imagine attaching a label of bravery when someone is just trying to be…real. By turning moms into superheroes we’ve created unrealistic expectancies. We’re getting better, and we’re having more conversations about this, but we still have room to grow.

The flowers, cards, and gifts are so special--and so appreciated the second Sunday in May. So is a chance to be open and honest, and an opportunity to speak without fear of criticism or becoming an object of discussion amongst others.

There are a lot of things we may never hear moms say, but those are the things we need to be listening for the most. That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money: Your affordable dream home You’re in the market for a new house so you have a host of important choices to make. What neighborhood should you live in?

Does your lifestyle suit a condo or a house? Do you build or buy? But before you start choosing between granite and laminate, your first choice should always be a house you can comfortably afford.

Lenders typically use two formulas to determine the maximum loan they are prepared to offer you, and the mortgage interest rate utilized in the formula calculations are typically higher than the actual rate you will be charged (this is known as the “stress test” rate).

• The Gross Debt Service Ratio (GDS) requires that your housing costs are not more than 30% of your gross (before-tax) monthly income. The GDS calculation includes your mortgage principal and interest payments, property taxes,

100% of the expected heating costs,, as well as 50% of condominium fees (if applicable).

Only assured income sources count in the calculation. Variable income, such as tips, bonuses or overtime earnings do not count ,unless they have consistently been received and reported on your tax returns for a minimum of 2 years– however two-income households can use a combined “family” income amount.

• The Total Debt Service Ratio (TDS) takes into account other debts, such as loans, lines of credit, car payments and credit card payments. No more than 40% of your gross (beforetaxes) monthly income can be allocated to your housing costs and other monthly debt obligations.

While these calculations will create the foundation for the amount of the mortgage you will qualify for, they don’t necessarily

paint an accurate picture of the mortgage amount you can comfortably afford.

To do that, you must look at your complete financial picture – the property taxes you will pay, the cost of homeowners insurance, maintenance costs, the new furniture and appliances you plan to buy, your preferred lifestyle (eating out, travel and so on) and potential lifestyle changes like having children or moving from a dual- to a single-income situation.

Also keep in mind that your mortgage interest rate could increase over time.

Once you’ve accurately established the real costs of your dream home, be sure you won’t end up “house rich and cash poor” with too much of your money going towards home expenses and mortgage payments by: • Creating a budget.

• Considering a smaller house and mortgage that gives you more lifestyle and

spending flexibility.

• Working with a professional advisor and a mortgage planning specialist to incorporate housing costs into your overall long-term financial plan – and to determine which mortgage options work best for your unique situation.

Finding your affordable dream home is a giant step toward personal comfort and financial security – and with the right overall financial plan, you can comfortably accomplish all your other life goals.

Local athlete Nathen Schmidt devastated with the U of R’s decision to cut teams Kelly Running Observer Staff

Wrestling became Nathen Schmidt’s passion, one that came with it an opportunity to wrestle at the collegiate level. On Monday, April 30, however, the University of Regina announced the wrestling teams as well as the men’s volleyball team would be cut.

Nathen’s reaction to the announcement “I was sitting at the kitchen table playing board games with my family and I checked my phone. I had a text from a friend saying, ‘Sorry the team got cut,’” Schmidt explained. “Then everyone was freaking out in a group chat and that’s how I found out.”

Schmidt says an email was sent out to the team as well, but that not all of the athletes on it received the email

as they were not on the email list.

The U of R completed a report in January of 2017, which stated that the 16 teams operated by the U of R were not sustainable.

“To us it was out of the blue and spontaneous,” Schmidt said.

“The biggest question is ‘Why didn’t they tell us?’ After we found out on April 30 we were told that it was to do with the budget, performance, and community engagement.”

“Wrestling is one of the cheapest sports at the school. Our performance was quite good – we had four new recruits medal and go onto Nationals, and we placed second overall in the standings at Canada West. And the girls team were doing well medaling too.”

“The only excuse they gave us that I can

understand is that wrestling isn’t the most popular sport to watch… but, we’re wrestlers and we like to fight and this feels like the school forfeited a match for us.

We would have liked the opportunity to fundraise, build community engagement, and prove ourselves. So right now we’re trying to fight and get the program back.”

“I’ve had a lot of messages from other coaches to go wrestle somewhere else, but the timing of this also means that I can’t apply because I’ve missed all of the deadlines.”

“Recruitment season is over and we had others committed to coming here in the fall, so now they’ve also lost their opportunities for other schools because they chose to come here.”

Schmidt added, “It’s been really tough.

It makes me upset to talk about it. I feel very disrespected from the University. I’ve spent so much time training – leaving my blood, sweat, and tears in there – to represent Regina and it just means nothing.

They just kicked me away. It’s heartbreaking.

I have a bag full of Regina clothes here and I don’t even want to look at them.”

Schmidt added that although wrestling was a growing sport in Saskatchewan, southern Saskatchewan will be very much affected by this: “It damages so many opportunities for kids. I was 16 and at a tournament when Leo [McGee] the coach here came up and asked me how my grades were. I shrugged and said they were alright. He gave me all his contact information and I gave him mine, and he told me, ‘Get your grades up and we’ll talk.’ That’s when I realized there was a possibility for me to go to University; it hadn’t really looked like an option until then.”

Right now Schmidt’s future in wrestling is a little bit up in the air: will they be able to convince the school to allow them a trial period to improve community engagement, performance, and fundraising efforts; or will he be taking a year off before joining another program?

“I know that my athletic career isn’t over,” Schmidt said. “Right now I just don’t know where, how, or when; but, it’s not over.”

Response from the University Harold Reimer, Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies, spoke to The Observer about the decision.

“There were a number of reasons and all were taken into consideration; all programs were subjected to the same evaluation,” Reimer stated. “There were three primary reasons: budget is an important consideration, the levels of community involvement both the community to the teams and the teams in the community, as well as the program’s ability to attract top athletes.

However, those three reasons are only part of the evaluation the programs were subjected to.”

Nathen Schmidt of Carlyle (centre) just finished his first year at the University of Regina where he competed on the men’s wrestling team. The team was notified on April 30, that the university would not be funding it, the women’s wrestling team, or the men’s volleyball team. Schmidt and the other wrestlers who had committed to the team are extremely upset that they weren’t given more notice (recruitment and application deadlines to other schools is well past) or a chance to improve community engagement, funding, and performance.

“At the University there has been an athletics deficit for a number of years and the deficit has been growing as costs go up. Cost is increasing faster than our revenues. In our last fiscal year the deficit was in the neighbourhood of $500,000, which is a significant amount. By making this move we’re anticipating to save anywhere from $350,000 to $500,000 over time.”

Funding for athletics comes from two sources: internal and external.

“Student fees are collected from each student that attends, every semester,” Reimer said of the internal source, adding, “Externally fundraised, in some way, shape, or form – whether it’s coaches, staff, sponsorship obtained, gate receipts, or donors – that is all external.”

“So, we needed to find a means in which to live and to find ways to do that.”

“It’s not a decision we take lightly. I know it’s emotional and we anticipated it would affect people; but, we needed to make decisions despite that to be good stewards of our resources and ensure the future of athletics.”

“The easiest thing we can do is nothing; and I know this affects many people, but if a change wasn’t made it would affect more people down the road and it’s not fair to drag out that decision.”

When asked about the late notice to athletes, Reimer explained, “It did cross our minds and we did look at it, but there were other

factors we had to take into account. For those looking to go elsewhere we will assist them in that process. Last week I contacted a Dean at another institution and a president at another institution to see what the best route for these individuals is to take. We’re working with the student athletes that want to continue to compete to do so.”

“I am also aware of three athletes that were recruited for the fall and we have been in contact with each; one of them I met with personally.

There was one from Regina and two from elsewhere. The one I spoke to here has already paid an application fee and paid for housing, they will be provided refunds if they decide to go somewhere else.”

“It’s the right thing to do.”

Ultimately the University of Regina says a change was needed in order to ensure the athletics programs at the university would be viable into the future.

“We needed to reduce the number of programs to do that,” Reimer explained.

“There are also other changes that we need to implement and we need to attract resources from external sources because we will never have enough to fund athletics internally.”

“It’s a difficult decision, it’s been difficult for many people. People were chocked by it and we certainly understand that; we don’t want to diminish anyone’s feelings, but it doesn’t lessen our need to ensure a future for athletics.”

Wheatland Wild go wild in Winnipeg Submitted The Wheatland Wild 2011 team participated in the North American Hockey Classic in Winnipeg from April 26-29.

They started the tournament strong, defeating the Manitoba Mustangs on Thursday and the Manitoba Lightning on Friday before their match against the Regina DR Junior Titans.

The Titans were hungry for a win as the Wild had challenged, and reigned over them previously in Moosomin and then again in Wilcox. It was a very tight game up to the third period and then the Wild were able to pull ahead for a 14-11 win.

Saturday afternoon, the Wild came up against the MB Team Xtreme, the tournament favourites; both teams were at 3 and 0 and were looking to finish first in the round robin heading into the playoffs. After a very entertaining game with the score volleying back and forth, the Wild came away with a 15-12 win.

The gold game, Sunday afternoon found the Wild and NB team Xtreme playing once again. Fans were kept on the edge of their seats as the battle raged. There was time served in the sin bins for players from both teams as they both fought hard for the win.

Score after the first had the Wild on top 4-2; the Team Xtreme in the lead 9-8 with two periods complete. The third period saw Team Xtreme go ahead by three goals at one time before Wheatland went wild and scored five in a row to come away with the gold. Shots on goal in this game were 28-29 in favour of Team Xtreme.

Overall in this tournament the Wheatland Wild went 5 wins, 0 losses and 0 ties for a total of 10 points.

Education & Inspiration: Runner Rilee Manybears’ motivating message for WBEC Lynne Bell

Gold medal runner and motivational speaker Rilee Manybears delivered an inspiring message to the staff and students of the White Bear Education Complex and members of the White Bear First Nations educational community, during WBEC’s April 24-25 conference at the Bear Claw Casino.

Manybears’ talk chronicled his triumphs as an elite athlete and a successful student - one who is currently considering scholarships to four U.S. universities.

However, the 22-yearold also walked his audience through the many challenges he has overcome on his journey to athletic and academic success.

The 22-year-old was raised on Siksika Nation, near Calgary where he lived with his parents and three younger siblings.

“I saw and sometimes experienced the negative effects of trauma - poverty, drugs and alcohol,” he says. “And sometimes, my family had no food. But you use humour during tough times. One of my younger siblings said to me once: ‘Rilee, what’s for supper? And I said: Sleep!’”

“Desperate times call for desperate measures and for me, school was often an escape from a negative environment.”

“An Elder told me that education is our buffalo,” he says. “You can use it for everything.

That diploma, degree, Masters or PhD is like the buffalo - it gives you food, shelter, everything.”

An elementary school teacher encouraged him to join his school’s track and field team and later, Manybears became a cross country runner as well as a member of basketball, volleyball and golf teams throughout his school years.

“When I was introduced to track and field by that grade five teacher, I showed up and everyone else had nice running gear,” says Manybears. “I didn’t, but I took the race in these big, bulky DC shoes. And then I won the 400 (km) in socks, with bleeding feet.”

“I ran a lot just between my house and my two cousins’ houses,” says Manybears. “I saw one of my cousin’s medals and I wanted that, too.”

During grade 12, he set a record by competing in four different ASAA (Alberta School Athletic Association)

Provincial Championships in one year, as he competed in track and field, cross country, volleyball and skills.

However, Manybears began struggling with drugs and alcohol in an effort to numb his pain and grief as he experienced the death of his father and the suicides of other close family members. As a result, he continued to struggle on and off with addiction.

“I figured out that negative role models could really contribute to a destructive lifestyle,” he says. “I struggled too, but during times that were heartbreaking for me, I was still active and I would often play every sport I could to keep my mind off things.”

“My parents were young and they did the best they could,” he says.

“They suffered from trauma, too.”

“By the time I was almost finished high school, I had failed my core classes and I almost quit - but where would I go?” he says. “I didn’t want to be that stereotypical native kid who drops out of school.”

“I was still trying to pick out positive role models and then a senior Siksika member said to me: ‘Are you going to be the next Billy Mills?’”

“I soon learned that Bill Mills was a Native American who ran the 10,000 metres in Tokyo in 1964 who won the (Olympic) gold medal.

I thought: ‘He’s my role model - even though I hadn’t even met him yet.”

“In my senior year of high school, I wrote a list of goals,” explains Manybears. “One of my goals was to go to postsecondary. I was planning to move to Calgary, where I was accepted into the U of C (University of Calgary).”

“My dad walked up to me and told me ‘I’m so proud of you; so proud you’re my son and that I’m your father.’”

Soon after, Manybears received a devastating phone call.

“Dad passed away,” he says. “Then I just broke. I couldn’t pick myself up. I just saw him the night before.

That summer, I drank, I dropped out of university after two weeks and I got into that lifestyle I said I’d never get into.”

Eventually, his younger brother helped Manybears realize that this self-destructive path was hurting his family and with his sibling’s encouragement, he began running again in an effort to heal.

“Basically, he was babysitting a big 18-year-old,” says Manybears. “But I moved

back in with my auntie, got therapy and was still training.”

“But that lifestyle kept pulling me in until an Elder invited me to a sweat.”

Just a year later, Manybears began training for the 2014 North American Indigenous Games in Regina. There, he won the gold medal in the 3,000 meter race and was awarded two bronze medals in the 1,500 meter race and the 6 km cross country event.

“I literally cried meeting him,” says Manybears. “I shook his hand and he signed my shirt.”

“But the most important thing I took away from (Billy Mills) was that message of perseverence and hope.”

“I literally followed him around in Portland,” says Manybears.

“Being around someone you really admire feels really good.”

Marley’s Dance Effex 2018 Recital

Adorableness abounded in the Tiny Tot Tap dance to “Crazy Cajun Stomp.”

It was a “Dynamite” performance by this hip hop duo: Callie and Emma.

From Page 13- Rilee Manybears “It was a celebration honouring his Olympic gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics,” he says. “I learned that he was an orphan and that he’d experienced racism growing up in Kansas, but he overcame all that to win a gold medal and inspire other people.”

Manybears began training with the University of Calgary Track & Field team in preparation for the 2014 Canadian Cross Country Championships in Vancouver, which led to a triumph on the international stage.

He earned a gold medal at the first World Indigenous Games in Palmas, Tocantins, Brazil in 2015.

He came first in the 8 km event as he joined over 1,500 fellow Indigenous athletes from 20 countries in competition, but also in a spirit of cameraderie.

“I was a world champion,” he says. “But that wasn’t it. It was me being proud of being Indigenous.

At the invitation of his mentor and 1964 Olympic gold medallist, Billy Mills, Manybears ran the 2016 Boston Marathon after being selected as a member of USA Team Running Strong.

“Billy Mills invited me to run the Boston Marathon,” he says. “Before I ran, I had heart surgery. The first operation didn’t work, so we tried ‘Operation B.’ It was really risky, but I ran the Boston Marathon.”

“It all started when I was almost selected for the 2015 Pan Am Games for Team Canada,” says Manybears. “It was a hot summer day and I collapsed and woke up in the ER. I was told I had a heart condition and that I’d never be active again. As a dumb 19-year-old teenager, I drank. But then I got the invite to the World Indigenous Games in Brazil and I quit drinking, got back into shape and with the help

of a cardiologist, started training smart.”

“If I would have stayed in that negative lifestyle, I would have missed so much.”

Currently, Manybears is considering scholarship offers from four U.S. universities - one of which is Billy Mills’ alma mater - the University of Kansas.

“It’s my modern buffalo,” he says. “I told my siblings ‘I think it’s time for me to go back to school.’”

“I’ve learned that the world isn’t always a nice place,” says Manybears. “It can knock you down, but you can choose whether you get back up.”

Rilee Manybears produced a short documentary film,“The Failure Way” was released in 2016.

He continues to speak at various events in Alberta and now Saskatchewan - in an effort to inspire youth with his message of perseverence and hope.

Coding Quest Arcade event a success Kelly Running Observer Staff

The ability to use and understand electronics is becoming an ever important skill for the youth of today.

South East Cornerstone School Division has taken this into account and students are now coding in school. Joining with The Learning Partnership, Cornerstone was able to have grades 4, 5, and 6 launch their own games with the Coding Quest Arcade event.

Three events were hosted: one in Weyburn, one in Estevan, and locally one in Redvers.

Students from Carlyle Elementary School, Maryfield School, Redvers School, and Wawota Parkland School were all present for the event hosted in Redvers on Tuesday, May 1.

Not much news this week! It seems the more news created the less is passed on to me. Guess everyone is to too busy.

Visiting with Denis and Norma Lamontagne recently were Lea Kushner of Swift Current and Rennee Lamontagne and Emett from Canmore, AB. Shirley Corkish had a visit from her grandson, Eric Corkish of Regina this past week.

Sympathy to all of the family and friends of the late Rita Beauchesne. She passed away at Deer View Lodge on May 1 at the age of 98 years. What a long and productive life she had.

Once again I am amazed at the success of all of the fund raisers held this past five weeks. There were at least 8 and all were well attended with donations of food, work and prizes for silent auctions. Last week a pork lion meal was held for Janelle Lamontagne who is under going cancer treatments. This past Saturday saw a sold out crowd for a steak supper and musical evening with silent auctions and 50/50 tickets. This was for Doug Wight who too is receiving cancer treatments. The funds raised are great but think that the thoughtfulness and caring of the commu-

nity is of equal benefit to those in treatment.

Faye Walker had the misfortunate of dislocating her shoulder on Apr. 29, spent the night at Galloway Health Centre and is now recuperating at home.

Here is to a speedy recovery Faye.

The Alida community extends sincere sympathy to Ralph and Sheila White on the death of his brother Charlie White (formally of Glen Ewen) who passed away May 1 at the age of 88 years at Carnduff Sunset Haven. Condolences are also extended to all family members and friends.

Adam Cowan spent Sunday, May 6 at the Cowan farm enjoying some quad riding, helping to shuttle the men around the fields and also mowing the lawn – had a busy day before heading back home to Estevan.

I didn’t receive too much news this week – guess most of the folks are getting ready to head out in the fields very soon – if they haven’t already begun seeding. The men here started seeding on Saturday and are going strong. Now that the farmers have begun

Course selection/options meeting May 23 has been set aside for the start of course selections for next year. Parents of students in grades 11 and 12 (next school year) are welcome to come out to school at 7:00PM to go over student options and select courses for next year. Science teachers and math teachers will be there to talk to parents about course content and what it takes to be successful in topics dealing with things like quantum physics, genetics, or calculus. Finally, we’ll talk about the connection between the courses taken and the ability to get into post-secondary programs. Once again, the meeting will be held May 23 at 7:00PM in the high school library.

Many parents and students attended Student Led Conferences last week. Remember, if parents/caregivers ever have questions or concerns about their children’s progress at school, they are encouraged to contact their children’s teachers.

I do believe that there are fire bands being put on, so check it out before you light that match – do take care. One more thing – watch out for those tiny little critters that are now out and about and love to stick onto anything that moves. Yah, that’s right – those blink-e-dee blank little WOOD TICKS – they are out there and I HATE THEM TO PIECES. It is Mother’s Day this coming Sunday, May 13 – Happy Mother’s Day to all Moms – hope you have a great day.

The PAC is the largest Christian evangelical congregation in Canada and during the past two years, OneChurch.ca has become known as a thriving presence in this part of the province, known for its hands-on missions both locally and internationally.

The growth of OneChurch.ca from its beginnings in 1993 to its current dual campuses in Carlyle and Redvers is “an example of God’s timing,” says one of the church’s founders, Karen Olmstead of Carlyle.

“Three households started out above the current (Affinity) credit union building on Main Street in Carlyle in April 1993,” says Olmstead.

“We wanted something family-orientated and we wanted to live out our beliefs and practice them in our everyday lives.”

“It was (formerly) Carlyle Building Supplies and our landlords - Cliff Walker, Al Mossing and Ron Paul - were great.

But even after we bought the building, we were dealing with things like only having one washroom for a growing congregation.”

“Some families planned their bathroom breaks around church,” laughs Olmstead. “The move from that building to where we are right now was really due to the space factor. And we still believe that it’s important for families to come to church together and that kids are our future.

And since we started, we didn’t want kids to be squashed up and uncomfortable in church.”

“But the big thing is, it taught us to trust,” says Olmstead. “We had a timing, but it really was God’s timing. If it had come easy, we wouldn’t have learned and experienced some things we needed to.”

Pastor Louis and Jenny Halbgewachs have been at the spiritual helm of OneChurch.ca

for 15 years. The couple’s story - like the church they serve - is also an example of what they both attribute to God’s timing.

“In 2003, we were living in Saskatoon,” says Jenny. “We hadn’t been married that long and we’d just bought a house...”

“I was completing my schooling (to become a pastor) and I was working at Shaw Cable, earning pretty good money,” adds Pastor Louis. “Roy Olmstead was calling a friend of mine - asking for references for another pastor to come to Carlyle. At the time, I didn’t know any of this, but my friend said the pastor they were calling about was great, but he thought I might be the guy for the job.”

“Without knowing about any of this, Jenny asked me if I was ever going to do anything I was passionate about again.”

“And the next night,” continues Pastor Louis, “My friend said to me: ‘So Louis, what are you going to do with the rest of your life?’”

“Then he told me that Roy Olmstead would be calling me.”

Circumstances -

from the sale of their home in Saskatoon to Louis becoming a full pastor and more - led the couple to believe that their move to OneChurch.ca was “a God thing.”

“The question was: ‘What does this life look like if Louis isn’t pastoring?” says Jenny.

“You graduate from Bible school and try to find a church,” adds Pastor Louis. “But really, the church finds you.”

Today, OneChurch. ca is located on two campuses and hosts biannual mission trips to Mexico. The church also ministers to its members and others locally - and often, confidentially.

A mainstay of its mission is its “4-Week Challenge.”

“We invite people to try church again,” says Jenny. “It’s a way to do life, really.”

“We challenge people to try church again,” adds Pastor Louis.

“Within a local body of believers - and God. There is meaning and purpose in life now and an abundant life in the here and now and that’s what we try to continue to convey.”

The trio agree that celebrating One Church. ca’s quarter-century anniversary is, as Pastor Louis says: “Celebrating what God has done and looking forward to what God will do.”

“God has brought us on a wild ride,” he continues. “And we have been privileged to hang on. When I think aabout what three families in a rented space started 25 years ago to this little church in southeast Saskatchewan having a national and international impact...”

“But it’s still that same heart,” says Jenny.

“God can do anything if we let him in.”

Twenty-five lovingly-crafted quilts created by area quilters were delivered to Humboldt by former Carlyle resident, Carol Eaton as part of the province’s ‘Quilters Call to Action.’ The project aims to provide quilts crafted in the Humboldt Broncos team colours of green, gold, black and white to members of the Humboldt Broncos team, their families, first responders and others impacted by the tragedy, which occurred on April 6. The Saskatoon Modern Quilt Guild said of the project: “As quilters and makers we are able to show love and appreciation by pouring our hearts and souls into handmade items. These items are meant to show love, give comfort, and are a tangible reminder that we care.”
