The local Lions have raised nearly $1.5 million for charitable and community causes since the Club’s inception 55 years ago. Carlyle & District Lions host annual fundraiser Lynne Bell

The Carlyle & District Lions Club entered March like a lion - as members hosted their annual fundraising supper, raffle and auction.

This year, the Lions are celebrating the annual fundraiser’s 27th year and 55 years of charitable and community giving, totalling “well over” $1 million, according to past president and Lions member, Gord Paulley.

During its 55-year history, the Carlyle & District Lions have raised close to $1.5 million, all of which has been donated back to worthy charities, individuals in need and community projects including Lions Park and Lions Pride housing in Carlyle, to name two. The Lions have also supported Cavalcade for Diabetes, Journey for Sight, Lions Eye Bank and the Sight and Service Foundation. They have also assisted area families with emergency expenses due to unforeseen medical circumstances.

The Thursday, March 1 event filled the Carlyle Memorial Hall as 215 attendees dined on a chicken and pork supper prepared by caterers Eileen Corrigan and Linda Chapman of Arcola (with pork supplied by Jack and Diane Wilson of Carlyle). The

sold-out crowd bid on an impressive array of auction items and prizes all donated by area businesses, organizations and individuals.

Event Chairperson and Lions member Wayne Wilson says: “None of this would be possible without the help of many, many people. Because of them, the Lions can donate every dollar back to causes we support - none of this goes to supporting our club’s operations.”

This year’s $1,000 cash winner is Dallas Robinson, while Martin Tourand picked up the $1,000 travel voucher.

“We have a couple of new ideas this year that we’re trying. One is a 50/50 with a guaranteed payout of $500, as well as 50 mystery items that we’ll sell at the end of the auction to the first 50 people with $10.”

“Every year, we start to prepare about the day after this event, getting ready for the next one,” he adds. “And everyone is so generous that it’s not too long before we’re filling up a shop storing donations for the auction.” “(Auctioneer) Ward Cutler comes out every year - and he has come out every year for 23 years. Eileen (Corrigan) and Linda (Chapman) have prepared a great supper for us here tonight and Jack and Diane Wilson supplied and

cooked the pork. The Hall Board set up the PA system and Cornerstone Theatre Group is running the bar,” he says.

“But most of all, we have to thank our many generous sponsors and donors and to everyone who comes out, year after year.”

Although the Lions added a few new twists to the auction action, two traditions were upheld.

Auctioneer Ward Cutler returned to preside over the evening and as usual, he garnered top price for a years’ worth of pies prepared by Lions President, Denis Feduk, with a $1,350 winning bid from Jolyn Schultz of Carlyle.

And as usual, Feduk presented Cutler with one of his prized pies, adding: “This is the only ‘live pie’ here tonight.”

Cutler summed up the evening by saying: “It’s always a pleasure to come back to Carlyle and to be part of such a wonderful event.”

Past president Gord Paulley says the success of the annual fundraiser is gratifying.

“It’s our 27th year for this event and we’re doing great,” he says. “”It’s still a sell-out and prior to tonight, we’ve raissed in excess of $1.4 million over time.”

“And we’re seeing a good turnover of people and some new faces this year, so our fundraiser is still going strong.”

New owners at Carlyle Collision excited for opportunity Kelly Running Observer Staff

Carlyle Collision, located at 102 Railway Ave. W. is now under new ownership as of Wednesday, Feb. 14; excited for the new venture are Kyle Whitman and Mariah Dayman who now own the business.

Whitman had been a silent partner for the past two years as the third owner of the business, while Dayman was a journeyman working in the shop for eight years.

“I saw her talents early on and realized I couldn’t see her go, so we discussed it,” Whitman said. “She phoned me and said, ‘You know what, we can do this.’

She’s the brains, I’m just the janitor.”

Both agree that being managing owners is an exciting turn in their careers.

“It feels way different; it’s a night and day difference,” Whitman stated referencing being a silent partner to being able to make decisions.

Dayman added, “We’re really excited about this. We’re looking forward to being more involved in the commun-

ity and stepping forward with a fresh start. We have a super motivated, young staff who are willing to learn.”

Currently they employ six people with a new journeyman hired and on their way to make seven total.

“We’re big on treating our employees well because if you make your employees happy, tell them they’re doing a good job and encourage them, they know they’re appreciated,” Whitman said. “Other than the customer, they’re everything.”

“We have an amazing bookkeeper too, her name is Leslie Boulet,” Dayman explained. “We wouldn’t know what to do without her.”

“She’s been our saving grace before and after this transaction,” Whitman added. “She’s been a breath of fresh air.”

The company has various focuses from customer’s personal needs to oilfield needs.

“We do pipe coating – interior and exterior – for the oilfield, as well as all of the work in the body shop,” Whitman stated.

Still available is the powder coating of box liners, which is currently only available in black, but options for colour coated box liners are in the works.

“We’ve been in talks with a company about the coloured box liners, but we’ve been getting a lot done around here right now, so it’s in the works and we’ll have that option soon,” Whitman explained.

Rider Eddie Steele speaks at Arcola School’s Pink Day Kelly Running Observer Staff

Pink Day began in 2007 when a young student was bullied in Berwick, Nova Scotia, for wearing a pink shirt. Two students in an older grade went out that evening and acquired 50 pink shirts, handing them out the next day at school. In a stand against bullying the two older students: David Shepherd and Travis Price helped start a movement that swept the country and has since spread internationally.

This year for Pink Day, Arcola School welcomed Eddie Steele – a defensive lineman with the Saskatchewan Roughriders – to present Red Cross’ Pink Day presentation, while also using instances from when he grew up to explain why it’s important to be good to each other and the differences between bullying and joking around with friends.

“We all face tough times in life, but it’s about how we respond to those tough times,” Steele said.

He began the presentation by asking students to think about a group of three or four friends and what a healthy relationship between them looked like – laughing, smiling, sharing, joking around, etc. . . .

“When you see someone smile it makes you feel welcome, it makes you feel safe,” he said. “When I walked into this school I didn’t know anybody, but people smiled and welcomed me. It made me feel good.”

Key words that Steele focused on regarding healthy relationships included respect, trust, communication, conflict resolution, fun, supportive, equal, safe, and respectful of each other’s

boundaries.

Steele then spoke about bullying and how it is repeated, unwanted, aggressive behaviour involving some form of a power imbalance.

The different types of bullying include verbal, physical, social, and cyber bullying.

“If you’re being bullied you need to know it’s not your fault,” Steele said. “Bullying is a learned behaviour.”

“When I was in school I wanted to be liked so badly that I’d make fun of others; I was self-conscious though. Looking back I can’t believe I had that kind of lack of respect for others. I teased kids so badly that they cried and as a 29-year-old man now looking back on that, I’m ashamed of it.”

When it comes to whether the banter between people is joking or bullying Steele told the students to check four things: is the joking going both ways, are both people having a good time, is this behaviour fun, and has anything happened between these people before?

In the cyber bullying realm it becomes easier for bullies to say things that they may not otherwise say; thus, Steele brings to light four rules to think about before posting online.

The Golden Rule – treat others how you want to be treated.

Trusted Adult – what would one of your trusted adults think if they knew that was what you wrote?

Front Page – if that what you wrote appeared on the front page of a newspaper with your photo, would you be alright with what you said?

Real World – would you say what you wrote in a face-to-face conversation with that person?

From Canada to Conde Nast: Saskatchewan’s Willow & Grey Jewelry featured in Vogue, Vanity Fair Lynne Bell

In just over two years, Willow & Grey Jewelry has gone from small-town Saskatchewan start-up to gracing the pages of fashion’s top titles - namely, Vogue, Vanity Fair and GQ magazines.

“I never imagined it,” says company founder and creator

Kayla Glidden, who grew up in Manor and Carnduff, and now lives and works in Southey.

“In late January, I got an email from Vogue,” explains Glidden. “It was from a strange address and it came in at 4 a.m. The next day, I was swiping through my emails and deleting my junk and I accidentally deleted it.”

“But I forwarded it to some marketers I work with and asked them to look into it,” explains Glidden. “And it actually was from Vogue!”

“Once I knew it was legitimate, I didn’t ask too many questions,” she says. “I just decided to hear what they had to say and what they had to say was pretty surprising and exciting.”

The email Glidden almost deleted resulted in pieces from her jewellery collection featured in the pages of British Vogue, Vanity Fair and GQ magazines for three consecutive months February, March and April.

For each issue, the Willow & Grey founder was asked to select one creation from her collection - to be featured alongside jewellery from companies headquartered in Europe’s fashion capitals and from as far afield as Ethiopia.

“It’s huge exposure and I don’t think the extent of the reach has really hit me yet,” says Glidden. “But since our first feature in Vogue, Google Analytics shows that people are checking out our website from L.A. and other parts of the world. And because it’s British Vogue, we’ve had a lot of page views from thoughout the UK.” Choosing which Willow & Grey piece to showcase in each magazine, each month, was a process Glidden relished.

“For the February issue of British Vogue’s Jewellery Edit section (which will hit Canadian newsstands in March), I chose the Opal Halo studs, which Vogue described as ‘beautiful’ and ‘the perfect way to treat yourself or a loved one.’”

“For February’s Vanity Fair, I chose our ‘Mila Choker,’” adds Glidden. “They described it as ‘a dainty, rose-plated chain featuring micropave chains.’ I chose that piece for that edition of the magazine because it’s a longer piece and it’s a pretty piece. It’s a little more dramatic and it has some sparkle, too, so I thought it was perfect for Vanity Fair’s Hollywood issue.”

“And having one of my pieces appear in a magazine (Vanity Fair’s Hollywood Issue) that has Oprah, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Tom Hanks on the cover...I never imagined it! It’s amazing!”

“Men are starting to come out of their shells when it comes to expressing their personal style with jewellery,” adds Glidden. “I’m doing a lot of stacking bracelets and men seem to really like them - especially the younger guys.

That’s why it’s great to that Willow & Grey is in GQ, too.”

As a result of her exposure in Vogue, Glidden was invited to attend this year’s London Fashion Week in February. “I wasn’t able to go this year,’ she says. “But we have a standing invitation from Vogue, so I’m hoping to take Willow & Grey to the UK in the future.”

Glidden - the mother of three girls ages five and under - works out of her home studio in Southey, Sask. She says she “never imagined” her work would be featured in Vogue - or any other fashion magazine.

“It’s funny,” she says. “I don’t have a fashion background. I’ve never been a part of that.

And my lifestyle dictates that most of the time, I dress for comfort.”

“I started making jewellery because my sister-in-law opened a spa here in Southey,” explains Glidden. “She wanted to carry some jewellery for her customers, but she was finding it difficult to find suppliers who would let her place smaller orders.”

“I come from a pretty creative family,” she says. “So I thought I’d give making jewellery a try. Her customers seemed to like my work and they bought the pieces I made. A few other stores here in Saskatchewan started to stock Willow & Grey and that’s how it started.”

“When I create jewellery, I try and keep my customer in mind by making pieces that are both unique and wearable.”

Glidden uses semiprecious and man-made stones and says opals and moonstones are favourites.

“Opals are an easy stone to work with,” she says. “And they’re a really flattering stone for every age and complexion.”

Currently, Glidden is hard at work on Willow & Grey’s spring/ summer collection while balancing the life of an entrepreneur with family life in rural Saskatchewan.

“We do a lot of wedding pieces,” she says.

The Carlyle RCMP responded to several calls from Thursday, Feb. 22 to Thursday, March 1.

Corporal James Barnett of the Carlyle detachment says that during this period, police dealt with an especially concerning sitiation.

“On a weekday at about 9 a.m., a semi-truck driver hit the ditch on Hwy 9,” says Cpl. Barnett.

“This individual was impaired by alcohol, but not to the extent where charges could be laid. However, members issued a 72-hour driving suspension.”

“I don’t need to point out the potential danger of this situation. However, the RCMP would like to remind all drivers that driving while impaired is not only illegal, it could result in tragedy. Please, please don’t drink and drive.”

911 Several calls of a non-emergency nature were received by the RCMP this week.

“Carlyle RCMP continue to welcome public engagement and calls with regards to community policing and safety,” says Cpl. Barnett. “However, calling 911 and/or the detachment with regard to parenting issues puts a strain on police resources.”

“Recently, the Carlyle detachment received a call from a parent asking us to assist them in getting their child to school,” he explains. “While we understand the parent’s frustration, these types of events are not a police matter.”

Break and enter The Wawota Forum (arena) was broken into.

Technology & society as depicted in Black Mirror

Recently I’ve been watching the British television show, Black Mirror, and I’m finding that it’s quite an interesting take on what the future might hold. The show is sci-fi and can be quite out there; but, the writers of it have brought up some interesting storylines.

The show’s episodes, although Kelly Running you can tell they are set in the Observer Staff same universe, standalone – you don’t have to watch the first episode of the first season to follow along in a different season. There are a few Easter eggs in which you see something that occurred in a different episode, but otherwise they standalone.

One thing, Season 1 Episode 1, is a lot, so I’d suggest maybe starting somewhere else; I started Season 1 Episode 3 and then worked my way back. (Just be aware that the show is rated as Mature meaning the episodes may or may not include – sexual content, crude language, and violence.

It’s unfortunate in a sense, however, because of the dialogue that the show could elicit for people of the younger generation that have grown up with technology.

In Season 3, Episode 1, “Nosedive,” it looks at the importance of social media and the “likes” one receives. Every single interaction you have with someone is followed by your choice to give them one to five stars. Those with 4.5 stars or higher are put on a pedestal; which even comes with deals on real estate, etc… while those with lower scores are considered the dredges of society.

The episode follows an individual who is focused on working her way up from a 4.2 to a 4.5; but, in her quest to improve her score by attending a friend’s wedding – who hasn’t dipped below 4.7 in six months – backfires and the woman’s score drops as she attempts to attend the wedding resulting in her “friend” telling her to simply no longer come.

The show heavily features technology like this including some interesting thoughts of where society may end up one day. 3D games are being developed to be processed by your brain; camera’s are in people’s eyes which allows them to take still pictures or recall a memory as if a video camera had taken it – with the capability to post it on a television screen for all to see; you’re able to block somebody which results in a fuzzy, white void and you can no longer hear that individual – and the block extends to all photos/videos of them as well as to their offspring; or a soldier is given an implant which makes him see the enemy as a terrifying monster in order to make killing easier for them.

In each episode I always marvel at the technology they allude to or use; but, at the same time humanity somehow uses the tech in a way that humans pervert and use in ways to harm each other.

It not only begs the questions of – how far will we take technology? And are those crazy storylines that far off or is it depicting a possibility of what our society is hurdling towards? – but, it asks philosophical questions regarding human nature and technology – are we innately good or evil or a blank slate? If we lose the connection to people because of technology will we be more indifferent to each other? (And yes, I’m already thinking about how people “troll” social media saying things they would never say to someone’s face.)

Overall, the show is an interesting look at what society’s fears might be with the ever increasing advancement of technology.

In memoriam : deifying or vilifying?

Many years ago I was asked to provide music at a memorial service for a man who had spent much of his life living and working in different places around the world. When he died he didn’t have one place to call home so his service was held in the small town where one of his siblings lived.

It was a private service with about a dozen family members, Shelley Luedtke the pastor, and me. A brother and a nephew spoke during the service and shared a handful of stories that were rather unique in that they weren’t the typical fare you hear at these events. The remembrances included highlights of his travels and some of the unusual jobs he took, but there were also stories speaking of his inadequacies and shortcomings. It was perhaps the most authentic recounting of someone’s life I have ever experienced, because, as the family members explained, he faced challenges few outside his family knew about but were pivotal in shaping the decisions determining how he lived. It was clear he worked hard to carve out a life that made sense to him, even if others couldn’t understand his choices.

In the days that followed that service there was talk within the community about this man but it was evident many seemed to be craving gossipy, negative anecdotes to satisfy their curiosities about the man they did not know.

When a celebrity or someone in the public eye passes away interest in them often increases. Retrospectives of their lives garner attention even amongst those who didn’t necessarily follow their careers. But how much of the postmortem coverage is intended to give a place in history to the one who has passed, and how much of it is intended to deceive and cast aspersions on the memory to raise ratings and readership.

Often there is an attention grabbing headline like “The Truth about…” or “The10 Awful Things You Need to Know about…” I was reading an online article from a legitimate news source following the passing of a famous man. According to the running tally there were just over 6,000 people who had

seen the story I was reading. An item under “Sponsored Content” contained the headline “The Hidden Truth” about the man who had passed. There were more than 18,000 hits on that item--three times more than the real article. People seem to be drawn to the negative, to the salacious, and to the unseemly.

The other extreme of course is when someone passes and is suddenly elevated to a status that belies the reality of their life. While on a two and a half hour road trip I was listening to a radio show which spent the entire morning talking about a music icon whose death had been announced the night before.

In the days that followed, he was talked about on every newscast, morning show and digital platform imaginable in very glowing, adoring terms--until the tide turned and the public seemingly grew weary of that mundane information. It then became a feeding frenzy of scandalous stories designed to spark public interest once again using words like “alleged dealings” and “sources close to the star” to give the stories a sense of credibility without having to back it up with any facts. Innuendo is enough to go on, and the more shocking the better. And while there was truth in both extremes; incredible musicianship along with a series of bad choices; it’s most likely a lot of his life was lived somewhere in the middle-a musician whose talents were widely enjoyed, and who struggled with some of the pitfalls that come with fame and fortune.

That’s where most of life is lived--in the middle.

Somewhere between the summits and valleys of highlights and low points; settling out in the range in-between where there is opportunity to savor the pinnacles while reflecting on the mistakes that allowed for the growth to get us there. But hopefully those who take time to acknowledge the passing of someone--whether they are personally connected or not--will choose to focus on the elements of their life that are part of a shared experience, and not whispered about by those who know little.

Whether it’s an acquaintance with an intrusive question or clever marketers trying to get us to click on digital bait, we should demonstrate the kind of respect…and restraint…we hope will be shown to us when the day comes that our lives will be recounted.

That’s my outlook.

(Updated as of Monday, March 5) Action in the Big Six League is coming ever closer to a close as teams compete in a best of five semifinal series. Games scheduled for Sunday, March 4, were rescheduled to Tuesday, March

6 – after The Observer deadline.

The series currently see the Carnduff Red Devils tied with the Wawota Flyers with one game each. In the other semifinal the Redvers Rockets need one more win over the Bienfait Coalers to clench a spot in the final round.

The Flyers took on the Red Devils in Carnduff on Friday, March 2. The first period saw the two teams post goals with Carnduff scoring one, while the Flyers buckled down and took two to the net. Goals for the Flyers in the first were Taylor Ernst off of Hunter Smith and Kayle Swanson from Taylor Ernst.

The second period had the Flyers coming out on fire as they scored a goal within the first two minutes of play: Ryan Taylor sounded the horn off assists from Riley Riddell and Justin Lamontagne.

Carnduff went without scoring in the second and both teams failed to capitalize on opportunities in the third leaving Wawota with the win and a tied series after March 2.

Rockets vs Coalers In the other semifinal match-up the Redvers Rockets lead the way with two games to zero as of March 5.

The two teams met on March 2 in Bienfait where the Rockets controlled the game. It was a shutout for the Rockets who also went on to score three goals. One came in the first from Drew Hoff off assists by Kevin Mann and Corey Jones in the first period.

The second period was dry, while the third saw the Rockets come to life earning two goals: Dakota Rose capitalized

on an unassisted opportunity, while Todd Gervais marked up a goal off an assist from Brady Gaudet.

On Saturday they played LeBoldus High from Regina in a very close & tense game, losing 6-5. Then they beat Campbell from Regina to win the B Qualifier & advance to the SHSAA Provincials.

Arcola Ice Show: a season of hard work showcased

The Arcola Skating Club put in a lot of work this season and were able to showcase their abilities on Sunday, March 4, at their annual Ice Show. Youth performed solos, pairs, and group skates all themed to the Enchanted Forest this year.

“Many disputes we encounter are between neighbours,” says Cpl. Barnett. “Often these escalate and if they continue to escalate, events can lead to criminal charges.”

“With regard to some of these disputes, I’d like to remind people of what my mother used to say to me,” he smiles. “‘If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.’”

Mental Health Act RCMP responded to one call under the Mental Health Act. Municipal bylaws Carlyle RCMP have responded to calls from area Rural Municipalities reporting heavy truck traffic on roads that are not designated for these vehicles.

“We would ask on behalf on the R.M.s that drivers stick to roads designated for their vehicle weight,” says Cpl. Barnett. “The damage caused to roads by these vehicles is an extra expense for area R.M.s and the damage to roads and the repairs also inconvenience other drivers.”

Property damage A youth was held in custody and appeared in court. This matter concerns damage to a store window at Kings Department Store in Carlyle.

Sexual assault Carlyle RCMP are currently investigating two reports of sexual assault.

Traffic/Collisions In addition to the impaired semi-truck driver mentioned earler in this report, RCMP responded to another motor vehicle accident involving a driver’s alcohol consumption. This case resulted in an individual having to be transported to hospital in Regina with injuries.

RCMP members have responded to four incidents involving impaired drivers operating motor vehicles during the past two weeks.

A motorist hit a moose. Fortunately, this person was not injured, but their vehicle was “a write-off,” according to Cpl. Barnett. “There is a lot of wildlife on the road

this time of year. We urge drivers to be aware and to adjust their driving speed accordingly.”

A traffic collision in Wawota did not result in injuries.

“The Carlyle Traffic Unit is currently concentrating on both stop sign and cell phone violations,” says Cpl. Barnett.

“Stop means stop. And we’d also like to remind motorists that you don’t have to be actively using a cell phone while driving to be charged with an offence. If you’re holding it in your hand or otherwise manipulating it, that can result in charges.”

Sixteen speeding violations occurred this week, with fines reaching $214.

Three motorists were fined $580 each for driving an unregistered vehicle.

Boy, oh boy – I surely did goof-up in last week’s (March 2) issue.

I sent in the wrong picture for The Alida All Stars who had placed 1st in A-event at the Alida Ladies Bonspiel. I had the wrong team name on the wrong picture, causing my great mixup. The Alida All Stars were Michele Anderson, Skylar Maihliot, Chelsey Mailhiot, and Stephanie Campbell. Sorry girls for the mix-up. Nipples, Arms & Legs were Shandi McMillian, Donna Fraser, Cheryl Boutin and Joey Mailhiot who all wore the NAL hockey uniforms.

Gail McLachlin spent Family day, February 19 and an extra few days visiting with her parents Ken and June McLachlin.

Faye Walker spent March 1 – 5 in Saskatoon to stay with her granddaughter Olivia and attended a musical tryout and recital where Olivia played her tuba. The rest of the family, (Deidre, Jeff, Abby, Claire and Piper) travelled to Edmonton where Abby attended a Soccer event.

The Men’s Brier curling begins in Regina this weekend (March 2) and carries on for whole week – Go Saskatchewan Go. There were quite a few from Alida who were planning on attending this event sometime throughout the week – Weather permitting.

Some of these folks were Gille and Cheryl Boutin, Gary and Brenda Junk, Leonard and Lil Patton.

Gray and Edel Cowan travelled to Regina on March 2 where they visited with son Jeff and also attend a couple of Brier games – if weather permitted.

Preparations and decorating at Alida Hall is now in full swing as the drama productions begin this coming week – first night Thursday with Dessert Theater, Friday – Cocktail Theater, Saturday – Dinner Theater and Sunday Matinee with cookies during intermissions.

Hopefully you have your tickets. However Sunday is pay at the door and is first come, first served.

Happy 98th birthday to Rita Beauchesne a resident of Deerview Lodge. She celebrated her birthday with family and friends on Feb. 28.

Happy birthday also to Bud Pleckham who was 93 years old on Mar. 2. Bud is our last surviving veteran of World War II from Wawota. He and Mary live in Weyburn.

Stan Niebergall enjoyed a holiday in Stoney Plain, AB. While there they attended an Oilers vs Boston Bruins game and several of the grandchildren’s hockey games. Stan, Dennis and Cash enjoyed some fishing. Stan also visited with daughter Shawna and family.( Some interesting facts: the 50/50 at the game was $68,205.00, the escalator at Rogers Place is the longest in North America, and the clock which measures 46 feet across is the largest in the NHL.) Congratulations to Bud and Kelsey Beauchesne on the birth of their son, Eli Dane. He was born on Feb. 20.

The World Day of Prayer was celebrated at Deerview Lodge on Mar. 2. It was the 100th birthday of this event. Canada has participated in the World Day of prayer since 1920.. Different countries prepare the service emphasizing concerns of the area and how these needs are being met.

The Wawota Drop In sponsored two fund raisers for Telemiracle. They realized $279.00 from a lunch served and $360.00 from the continental breakfast and $639.00 was sent in. There was a record of $7.1 million dollars raised. What a great accomplishment and what a bunch of generous people who live in Saskatchewan.

So many books, so little time. Every now and then someone will give me the name of a book to read. Recently Aunt Pat Sotkowy recommended, “The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Wall. It is a memoir of resilience and redemption. When somber the father was brilliant and charismatic, when drunk he was dishonest and destructive Her mother abhorred responsibility and spent her time painting. The 4 children learned to look after themselves and each other. It was hard to believe that the children grew up as responsible adults, all successful in their own right.

Ron and Shirley Carson and family have donated $ million to the Jum Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation in Saskatoon. The Carsons -parents of five children and the grandparents to 13 grandchildren - consider their gift to be a family legacy that will bring Saskatchewan families confidence in knowing their children and future generations can receive world-class healthcare without ever leaving home.

Lampman, SK, Ron Carson acknowledges that meaningful contributions to his homegrown community are a part of life in Saskatchewan.

After marrying his wife Shirley in 1965, the couple stayed true to their roots in Lampman, building a life together on Saskatchewan soil while raising their five children – Tracey, Travis, Troye, Trent and Tricia. Although the couple has had good fortune with the health of their children and 13 grandchildren, they believe in having a dedicated maternal and children’s hospital close to home for families who unexpectedly need it.

The generous gift will support a Family Space & Kitchen located just outside of the Pediatric Intensive Care and Observation Unit (PICU) in the new Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital. The unit specializes in the care of critically ill babies, children and teenagers and will be the only one of its kind in the province of Saskatchewan. The Family Space & Kitchen will give families visiting the PICU a quiet, comfortable and stress-free environment

away from their child’s hospital room, which is essential to their emotional well-being and key to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation’s commitment to family-centered care.

“Saskatchewan’s new dedicated maternal and children’s hospital, soon to be a provincial landmark for generations, will prosper because of selfless donors like Ron and Shirley Carson,” said Brynn Boback-Lane, President and CEO of Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. “Their gift exemplifies what it means to ‘pay it forward’ to those families who have served alongside them for so many years.

The Moose Mountain Lions hosted a family Winter Fun Day on Saturday, March 3, which was very well attended.

The day began with a Pancake Breakfast at 9 a.m. held at the Moose Mountain Church of Christ. It continued until 11 a.m., when the activities were moved over to McNaughton Heights hill and the shelter at the bottom of the hill.

There was tobogganing, sleigh rides, a skating rink cleared on the ice, and snow shoes and cross-country skis available for rent from the Lions at Kenosee Inn. “Everything went really well,” Will Sinclair, President of the Moose Mountain Lions,

Even with very little snow, youth were having a blast sliding down McNaughton Heights hill. explained. “There wasn’t as large of a turn out as usual, but the weather would have played into that. The wind was cold; but, the breakfast was really well attended and the outdoor activities saw many families enjoying the themselves.”

“This particular event is about the Lions giving back to the community. They support us all throughout the year with our fundraising efforts – which are going to the green space in the village here – so our winter carnival is a way for us to do something to give back.”

Phase 1 for the Green Space has been nearly completed, which included help from the Federal Government through a Canada 150 grant, which matched the Lions’ fundraising efforts.

“Phase 1 is the gazebo, play park, and the benches; we’ve been selling benches and picnic tables and putting sponsors names on them for the park, which we still have tables available for

sponsorship,” Sinclair added.

“Phase 2 is the outdoor hockey rink and the heated change rooms.

We’re still looking for sponsors. It’s the type of project that you spend what you have and can still upgrade after. The total cost of the project, for the bare bones, is about $250,000 for the whole thing.”

Fundraising has been going well and there has been a lot of support in place for this venture.

“This is our commitment to the village, which can be used by everyone visiting Kenosee,” Sinclair explained.

“The Lions are focused on celebrating family and community, so this is the perfect project for us to be a part of.”

Watch for further fundraising efforts including another Mexican Night in May. “It’s a welcome back to the park [for the season],” Sinclair said.

“Last year it was super popular and people are already asking us when it is this year.”
