Arcola Optmist Snowmobile Rally to celebrate at Jan. 27 rally Lynne Bell

The Arcola Optimist Club Snowmobile Rally will celebrate 25 years of sledding on Saturday, Jan. 27 - and the event will go ahead whatever the weather.

“We typically expect 500 riders at each rally,” says Optimist Club member and snowmobile rally trail coordinator, Kevin Paton. “And we go ahead with the rally, regardless of the weather. It’s become kind of a spectacle.”

“We’ve had years with ideal snow conditions and years with little or no snow,” says Paton. “Naturally, we’re hoping for snow, but we’ve found that even with little or no snow, riders still come - because there are still lots of activities such as our prize draws and also, they seem to enjoy getting together to mingle with other snowmobilers.”

“Our prizes every year are great,” adds Paton. “But this year, they’re phenomenal and along with riders, we welcome anyone to purchase our raffle tickets and enjoy a day of socializing at Prairie Place Hall.”

This year’s event features a total of over $30,000 in prizes. In addition to a silent auction and other draws, anyone - rider or not is invited to purchase a $20 grand prize raffle ticket. The winner of the grand prize will have the chance to choose between a 2018 AC XF 8000 Snowmobile, a 2018 Alterra Mudpro Quad, a 2017 Wildcat Trail SxS or an AC HDX 700 XT SxS. Second and

third prize winners will receive two prizes of $1,000 cash.

“There are only 2,500 of these tickets, so we encourage people to get them early,” says Paton.

“We also sell tickets for rider prizes that are sold at the registration desk the day of the rally,” he says. “And those are reserved for the riders only. But there are lots of chances to win whether you’re a snowmobiler or not. There’s a silent auction and other draws.” “ As I said, the prizes this year are phenomenal.”

“And along with the prize draws, people can eat, drink and socialize all day at Prairie Place Hall,” says Paton. “There’s a pancake breakfast, lunch, snacks and a beer garden. Last year, we had an ice bar outside and this year, we’ll do something different. We try and keep it the same event that people look forward to every year, but we try and improve it every year, too.”

What hasn’t changed throughout the rally’s 25 years is the stunning 100 km of groomed trails that wind through the scenic Moose Mountains.

“The Moose Mountain Snowmobile Club grooms the trails and they do an excellent job,” says Paton. “In fact, we couldn’t do what we do with this rally without them. They work really hard.”

“And we have a check point for the riders with something to eat, so we want them to have a great day and be well-fed and enjoy the experience,” he says.

Paton says the rally’s 25- year success story can be attributed to a few factors.

“We have a beautiful hall - Prairie Place which can easily accommodate everyone. The riders can mingle and it’s a pretty comfortable place to be after a long day’s ride.”

“Our proximity to the Moose Mountains is another big factor. And we have well-thought out trails, so no one is lost. They can enjoy the ride and the rally.”

“And our club and community partners and members are committed to this rally,” says Paton.

“There’s a lot of dedication, volunteerism and expertise that make this a well-run event that attracts hundreds of people and raises thousands of dollars every year.”

“But above all, Arcola continues to welcome all snowmobilers to this great event,” he says.

“We’d like to thank everyone who has supported us for 25 years and we’d like to welcome you back or welcome you to the snowmobile rally for the first time.”

“And whatever the weather does or doesn’t do, we promise to make it fun.”

A successful snowmobile rally hosted by the Arcola Optimists has endured 25 years and is attributed to location, the beautiful trails looked after by the Moose Mountain Snowmobile Club, and the strong community made up of all of the people and various organizations that come together to pitch in. “There’s a lot of dedication, volunteerism and expertise that make this a well-run event that attracts hundreds of people and raises thousands of dollars every year,” Kevin Paton explained.

New Year Resolutions

Every New Year celebration one of the most asked questions is, “What is your New Year’s resolution?”

The tradition of resolutions is actually steeped in a lot of history… People have traced the act of resolutions back to the Babylonians who would promise their gods at the beginning of each Kelly Running year that they would return anyObserver Staff thing they borrowed throughout the year and repay any debts accumulated. The Romans – pre-Christianity – would make promises to the god Janus –namesake of the month of January and known as the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, and ending.

During Medieval times it’s said that knights would re-affirm their commitment to chivalry at the end of the Christmas season with a “peacock vow:” knights would place their hands on a roast peacock, which they would all pledge to uphold chivalry before the peacock was then shared amongst all present.

The most common popular resolutions according to Tripsavvy.com: - Spend more time with family and friends - Find more time for physical fitness - Lose weight - Quit smoking - Enjoy life more - Quit drinking - Get out of debt - Learn something new - Help others more - Get organized According to the magazine “Fast Company,” the best ways to stick to your resolutions throughout the year is to: 1. Phrase your resolution as if you’ve already achieved it.

2. Set smaller goals throughout the year – instead of making a huge change at the beginning of the year, progressively make smaller ones throughout the year.

3. Repetition – start every morning stating your goal and emphasizing why it’s important to you every day.

4. Find people who have attained that resolution already and see if they will help support you in your endeavours.

5. Create a plan for dealing with temptations and setbacks – if you’re goal is exercise and you find you’ve missed two weeks of it because of life, don’t fret, simply start again.

6. Send written progress reports to a friend – a study from Dominican University of California states that over 70 percent of participants that wrote their goals and then shared updates with friends achieved their resolutions compared to 35 percent of participants who kept their resolutions and progress to themselves.

Last year my focus was on making time to read more… this season I’m going to focus on being more active. I’m not inactive currently, but I do need to hold myself more accountable to doing my own workouts three times a week.

I’m dreaming of a white new year The noisemakers and balloons have been put away and the postholiday return to routine is underway. New day planners of the virtual kind have been downloaded, or the first pages of the latest paper versions opened, while calendars have taken their place on our desks, walls and screens indicating that a new year is ready to My Outlook Shelley Luedtke play out.

As 2017 came to a close, news agencies shared their lists of top stories of 2016--as determined by their journalists based on their perspective, which makes it interesting when you compare the lists. A story deemed ‘top ten worthy’ by one agency doesn’t crack the list of another organization. One of the mass shootings made some lists, but not others. Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Katia topped a newspaper list but not the top 10 of one TV network even though they had devoted extensive coverage when the hurricanes were occurring.

There was also what one commentator called a “lot of white noise” last year, the type of noise created when sounds of all different frequencies come together. Although not the most accurate use of the term, the commentator was referring to the rhetoric, the over-reporting, the bemoaning of fake news, the incessant posts, and the continuous barrage of information that gives us little time to sort through what is true, accurate or important, because the noise just keeps coming. Just like white noise, we are exposed to every imaginable tone, opinion and idea the human ear can hear, hitting us all at once.

When we take a look back at the year just ended, some events some come to mind immediately, while others fade a bit even though at the time they may have loomed large. Something that shocked or dis-

turbed earlier may not be remembered as clearly as something more recent as we file things away in our memories in a manner that allows us to process the impact they had and the place they will hold.

So I thought about what I would put on the 2017 Top Ten List; not around the world, but in my own life. The first few came to mind easily, but they were followed quickly by a bunch of other events that had me saying, ‘that one, no, that one!’ But then it wasn’t big events that I was recalling, but rather smaller, special, poignant occurrences. Unexpected experiences, and emotions, and simply…moments.

As we get those planners ready to take us into the new year we have likely already filled in some of the blanks. Perhaps a vacation is in the works, or a wedding, or a family gathering has been set. There may even be some meetings or appointments pencilled in. But hopefully there is a lot of white space-portions of the pages that are unmarked--the margins, the blank spaces that fall between the lines, and the boxes between the columns. These are the empty places that invite our input. Not only do we need to manage carefully what gets put in, we need to be the diligent keeper of what we know needs to get left out. All too quickly the slots are filled and we neglect to carve out time for the moments that mean the most.

In just over 11 months the lists will again be compiled, and we will have that chance to look back and take note of our own top ten. So that means right now we are at the outset of what those months can look like. Much will be decided for us--but much we will have the opportunity to shape.

As we embark on this new year let’s be sure to think carefully before we fill our planners and clutter our calendars. The best way to create those lists of moments that could make the Top 10 is to work at keeping the white noise out of the white space.

That’s my outlook.

Why you still need stocks in retirement Here’s an old investing rule you’ve probably heard and maybe even ascribe to: When you’re younger, hold more equities and when you’re older hold more bonds.

Why? Because bonds aren’t risky; they don’t fluctuate as much as stocks. And, if you’re like most people, you’re likely to become more risk averse as you move toward retirement – which means you’ll probably move your portfolio away from equities and into bonds to reflect your shrinking appetite for risk.

Here’s another reason for the conventional recommendation to switch from equities to fixed-income investments as you reach retirement age: Younger investors have longer investing horizons but, when you’re older, you have

less time to overcome downturns in the stock market so less potentially volatile investments are a safer choice.

Today, though, it can make sense to hold stocks for longer. That’s because we’re living longer. -- in 1990, life expectancy was 77 years now it’s 82 years and climbing* -and a longer life means that more portfolio growth is required.

But bond yields are low – much lower than in years past -- so they generate less income. In 1990, bonds returned 10%; in 2017, they yielded just 1.5%.

Today’s low interest rates for fixed-income investments are part of the problem. The other part: The impact of inflation on a portfolio which can erode your income over time.

Enjoying a longer retirement means you have to keep your money growing – and it’s a simple fact of investing life that equities compound at a higher rate than bonds -- and the longer you stay invested, the more your portfolio will grow.

So instead of rushing to reduce your equities exposure as you age, consider this three-bucket approach.

1. Save longer-term monies in growth equities to mitigate the effect of shorter-term market volatility.

2. Invest short-term needs in bonds and defensive equities for a more assured income stream.

3. Put daily expenses in a savings account where the funds can be easily and quickly accessed.

The Carlyle RCMP detachment dealt with several files from Thursday, Dec. 21 to Thursday, Dec. 28.

911/False Alarm(s) Two 911 calls were received - one of which was a young child who dialed the number after seeing a commercial for 911 on television.

Both calls were of a nonemergency nature.

One alarm was triggered in error in the detachment area this week.

Assaults RCMP responded to

two assaults during this period. One was a domestic assault and one incident is still under investigation by police.

Assistance Members provided assistance to a member of the public.

Breach of Conditions An individual was found to be in breach of their release conditions.

Child Welfare Act Members responded to two incidents under the Child Welfare Act. Curfew Check(s) Police conducted several curfew checks during this period.

Drugs An individual was charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. This matter is still under invesigation by RCMP.

Fire Police responded to the report of a fire. Upon investigation, the fire was under control and was simply a bonfire at a residence.

Mental Health Act Members responded to a call under the Mental Health Act. Mischief One report of mischief within the detachment area was solved this week, one is still under investigation and two incidents resulted in no charges. One of these incidents was alcoholrelated.

Sexual Assault Carlyle RCMP are currently investigating a sexual assault.

Traffic Offences/Collisions Four non-injury col-

lisions occurred within the detachment area this week. RCMP remind motorists to drive to road conditions.

One hit and run involved one vehicle colliding with another.

There were no injuries.

Police issued tickets, fines or warnings regarding the following offences: driving without vehicle registration and/ or insurance, operating a motor vehicle without a licence and failing to wear a seatbelt.

In addition to Santa stopping for a visit youth and their figure skating coaches played numerous games, including one where you had to outline everyone in your group with a bingo dabber before the other side.

NHL teams readying for Tavares sweepstakes

Bruce Penton John Tavares, perhaps the most underappreciated superstar in the National Hockey League, will find out this summer that he’s truly appreciated after all when he becomes a free agent.

There will likely be 31 teams, including his

own New York Islanders, trying to woo the 27-year-old with a truckload of money because he is eligible to be signed with no strings attached, no compensation required.

Signing Tavares without having to give up a comparable star or a slew of prospects or high draft picks would be like winning a major lottery for the NHL team lucky enough to get his signature on a contract.

It’s like Mike Trout going on baseball’s open market, or Kevin Durant given the right to offer his services to any NBA team.

Which sweater he will be wearing next season could be one of the most intriguing stories in the NHL during the next few months, leading up to the July 1 date when he officially becomes free to sign with anyone.

Tavares was a boyhood, McDavid-like phenom in Ontario when he was a young teen. The Ontario Hockey Association tabbed him as someone to watch by allowing him to play in the major junior league at the unprecedented age of 14, and he responded with 45 goals to lead the Oshawa Generals in scoring. At age 15, Tavares scored 72 goals in 65 games and if NHL bird dogs weren’t drooling before, they were slobbering all over their scouting papers in 2005-06. Tavares spent a mandated two more years in junior — ages 16 and 17 — and tallied 42 and 56 goals respectively before becoming the slam-dunk No. 1 pick in the 2009 NHL draft by the Islanders.

Since then, surrounded by mediocrity, Tavares has had a rather quiet NHL career, with 256 goals in 623 games through Christmas.

Three trips to the playoffs didn’t accomplish much: no advancement past the second round.

Now that he has become eligible for free agency, NHL teams are lining up. Tavares is second in NHL scoring this season, trailing only Tampa’s Nikita Kucherov, and the combination of Tavares and Josh Bailey (third in the scoring race) has helped the Islanders become the second-highest-scoring team in the league.

The Islanders recently announced plans for a new arena in Belmont Park, N.Y., which would be a big improvement from the team’s current Brooklyn location and speculation was that the new rink would

be a development Tavares would welcome, leading to his signature on a long-term contract with the Islanders.

Meanwhile, let the free agent hype begin.

No matter what happens, Tavares will soon be a wealthier man and the team he chooses will be one step closer to the Stanley Cup. • Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “Russia has been banned from the 2018 Winter Olympics for systemic statesanctioned doping. Guests with Ben and Marcelle Peterson the week before Christmas were his sister Carol, Paul and Jeremy Weger of Brandon, as well as his sister Beth George of Redvers. Then on another day supper guests the Petersons were their nephew David and Vanessa McDonald of Indian Head.

On Christmas Day guests with Ben and Marcelle Peterson were their family – Michelle, Reg and Scott Needham (Oxbow), Miles Needham (Estevan), Bob, Deanna and boys Owen, Nathan (Weyburn), Joanne, Carson and Paige Longphee (Storthoaks), Nicole Longphee (Brandon), and Mitch Bisenthal (Redvers).

Shelly Cowan and daughter Ainsley travelled to Minot on December 22 to spend a few days during the Christmas break with the Nilsen family. Tim Cowan joined the family on Dec. 24 to celebrate

Christmas before returning home to Alida.

Faye Walker spent the Christmas break (Dec. 23-26) in Saskatoon with her family – daughter Deidra and Jeff Nickle and granddaughters Olivia, Abby, Claire and Piper.

Jeff Cowan (Regina) arrived at the Cowan farm December 23 to spend the Christmas long weekend with his parents, Gray and Edel. Murray and Adam Cowan (Estevan) arrived Dec. 25 to celebrate Christmas with the family which also included Tim, Shelly and Ainsley.

Christina Cornforth passed away at Deer View Lodge at the age of 84 years. Her funeral service was held at the Church of Christ at Kenosee Lake on Dec. 20.

Interment was in the Wawota Cemetery.

He passed away on Dec. 16 at the age of 57 years.

His funeral service was held at the Wawota Town Hall on Dec. 23.

Day with no complications despite the -34C weather.

PUBLIC NOTICE RM OF BROCK NO. 64 Public notice is hereby given that the Council of the RM of Brock No. 64 intends to adopt a bylaw under The Planning and Development Act, 2007 to amend Bylaw No. 1983-40, known as the Zoning Bylaw.

INTENT The proposed Zoning Bylaw amendment will allow for two residential subdivisions with no maximum site size in the Agricultural District. It also repeals the requirement that the residential subdivisions must not occur on lands with an agricultural capability rating of class 1,2 or 3.

AFFECTED LAND The affected lands include all lands in the Agricultural District.

REASON The reason for the amendment is to allow for two residential subdivisions with no maximum site size off of a quarter section in the Agricultural District. It also repeals the requirement that the residential subdivisions must not occur on lands with an agricultural capability rating of class 1, 2 or 3.

PUBLIC INSPECTION Any person may inspect the bylaws or the proposed plan of subdivision at the RM of Brock No. 64 office located in Kisbey during regular office hours. Copies of the bylaw will be made available.

None of us braved the cold, but Alice Zimmerman, Mary’s longtime friend came from Moose Mountain Lodge in Carlyle. They went to school together, and taught in adjacent schools. Alice always came to Mary’s birthdays at the Villa, but Mary had moved when Alice came here.

Pastor Hans and Wendy Elgby called in, en route to their new home north of Winnipeg. Other visitors at the Villa included Clayton Jensen and his sons Cole, Luke and Blake, to visit Ferne Mills. Chad and Leanne Jackson visited Alice Chaput. Larry and Marion Husband had Christmas dinner here with Irene. Harold Hilary, from Wawota, and Kelly and Wendy Greenbank, and Sherry Wilson visited Ruth Holstrom and Ruth Dennis.

Bill and Linda Mulligan had New Year dinner with Freda.

Our New Year’s Eve party, at 2 P.M., featured three tables of board games, organized by Doris Erickson and Gloria Oliver. One table played crocinole.

Another played Leora’s marbles, a long time family favourite, featuring a board with cards giving directions. The third table stuck to the familiar spades.
