White Bear First Nations Aboriginal Head Start Center officially opens Lynne Bell

White Bear First Nations officially opened he community’s Aboriginal Head Start Center, Friday, Sept. 29. The event started with a traditional ceremony and ended with a feast - and appropriately, took place the day before ‘The Orange Shirt Campaign - Every Child Matters Day’, which is held annually on Sept. 30 in regognition and remembrance of Indigenous children in Canada who were forced to attend residential schools.

One of the dignitaries in attendance, Director of Children’s Programs and Initiatives for the Dederation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN), Vonnie Francis said: “What better way to celebrate ‘Every Child Matters Day’ - which is really the recognition of the residential schools on our people language and culture – than opening his new facility to revitalize our language and culture with the children.”

Francis explained that the centre - which will benefit children from infancy to age six – will offer six components in its daily programming: Education, Language and Culture, Nutrition, Social Networking, Health Promotion and Parental Programming.

Alex Campbell, Regional Director General of Health Canada for Saskatchewan underscored the importance of the centre, addressing the crowd in both Cree and English, saying: “I think we can all agree that strategic investments in a child’s early years lead to greatly improved long-term health outcomes and this new space is an important step in extending the reach of your health programs to those who need them the most - our children.”

“Health Canada recognizes the positive im-

pact that the Aboriginal Head Start program is having in communities, particularly on children’s readiness to learn and the learning of Aboriginal languages.”

The morning’s events opened with an open-air prayer in the playground, as preschool children - many of them wearing orange – took part in a small ceremony just for them, led by Brent McArthur and J.R. McArthur, who also opened the indoor ceremony with traditional singing and drumming.

“This was something Sandra Lonechild, the director asked us to do,” said J.R. McArthur. “We said a prayer for the new building, for her staff and for the little ones.”

When we do community functions, prayer, song and food are always involved.”

“The song was specifically for the kids,” he added. “We’re here to honour the little people; we;re here to honour the opening of this beautiful building.”

Inside the centre, Elder Nora Kakakaway opened the ceremony with a prayer and later said, “It’s great for me to be here today with all of the little ones here.”

Each of the special guests in attendance spoke of the facility’s importance to the children of White Bear First Nations.

Executive Director of WBFN Ken Lonechild said: “This ceremony is informal. The kids are here playing during the opening ceremony and it’s informal, because it’s all about the kids - and promoting our traditions, our culture and our language.”

Councillor Bernard Shepherd said: “Seing my daughter and grandchildren here today enjoying all of this – it’s become a full circle. We all have said we hoped to see something like this happen in our lifetimes and now it has.”

Former White Bear

First Nations Chief, Brian Standingready said: “This program is an important part of our educational system here at White Bear. We have post-secondary, school to grade 12, the daycare and now, Head Start.”

Sandra Lonechild, WBFN Head Start director was praised for her commitment to helping to bring the Head Start building and program to White Bear.

“It takes an entire community to raise a child,” she said. “There are so many people who have contributed to this project and so many people who will do so moving forward.”

“This day was touching and wonderful,” she added.

Health Canada’s Campbell summed up the day by saying: “This is a significant investment in a child’s early years and prepares them not only for their school years, but also for a good start in life.”

Artist Michael Lonechild added: “It’s a new beginning.”

Oftentimes people think of their loved ones that have passed on and wonder how they’re doing. Visiting Kenosee Lake last week was Psychic Medium – Jodie Rollins – who was helping people answer these questions.

As a young child, Rollins, had the ability to speak with people who had passed on. She was also able to speak with her guides – her guardian angels – which has led her down this path.

“I kept hearing my guardian angels telling me I should do this for a living and I kept saying, ‘No,’” Rollins explains of what led her here. “I had lined up a show in Ireland and was asked to do readings too; I ended up loving it. While I was in Ireland I received a call from a lady to clear Blarney Castle, the new one that’s 450 years old. So, it kind of created itself; Ireland was helpful because no one knew me.

I could see how people enjoyed it and how it brought them closure.”

Rollins has found that many people are interested in her work and that was reflected during her Night of Spirit on Friday, Sept. 29, with her audience ranging in age and genders.

Using her gift, Rollins spoke to people that had passed on as well as to individual’s “team” – their guardian angels.

“It’s like somebody just comes in and I can chat with them,” Rollins explained. “And it’s a service to them, so I do

In addition to the Night of Spirit, Rollins and Julie Veresh (an Intuitive Energy Coach/ Body Talk Practitioner – who works out of Lotus Tree in Carlyle and monthly sessions at Kenosee Lake), held an “Ignite Your Intui-

tion Workshop” which focused on developing one’s psychic muscles.

“Part of the intuition workshop is focused on how to work with your team and receive messages from them,” Rollins explained. “So, we learn how to focus our thinking.”

“We’ve had a great response here; there’s a great energy,” Rollins stated. “Everyone has been really open and we’ve had a huge response for a small area, which is wonderful.”

“It’s been fun and it’s been great to meet such incredible individuals, it’s an honour to be able to work for them.”

Wawota & District Museum Committee Wawota & District Museum Committee held their meeting on Monday, September 25th with 6 members attending. Minutes of April 18th and July 4th meetings were adopted as was the Financial Report. Correspondence was read.

Business discussed: report on the Spring Tea & Sale (attendance and funds generated were less than last year); donations received with thanks from Mountney District, Lions Club, Playschool, Donors’ Choice, plus some individual donations; grants received with thanks from Recreation Board, Sask Heritage, Sask Culture and Town of Wawota. Three sets of Wawota History Book were sold.

Displays over the summer were: a photo display of early Wawota businesses over the years, a log cabin built by Harold Holloway, Canada 150 flags & birthday cake in museum window plus several western items to advertise the Ranch Rodeo weekend. Two Can-

ada 150 T-shirts were awarded as door prizes.

A report was given on the Heritage/Rodeo weekend with positive comments on the entries in the parade (Wawota’s old fire wagon and the Model T car); the western photo booth; and the very popular Dino Dig for children 12 & under.

The museum handed out $122 in toonies to children who found the “golden circles” in the sandpile. It was suggested that we contact Ken Wilson to see if they would like to partner with the museum in next year’s Old Time Harvest days on the Wilson farm.

Most of the repairs to the museum buildings have been completed over the summer. One museum committee member attended the Museum Assoc. of SK provincial meetings in Regina in May, the Parkland Network meeting in Langenburg in April and the Sask Connections Workshop at Kenosee in September. Two pre-school classes toured the mu-

seum in the spring and it is planned to have more school classes tour in the spring of 2018.

A report on museum visitor numbers over the summer season (who signed the register): 218 local residents, 101 out of town residents (from USA, BC, AB, MB and SK) plus 4 families used the museum records/ displays for research.

It was noted that some did not sign the guest register so this should be stressed next summer. The Museum will be contacting the Town about hiring and sharing a summer student next year. Wawota Museum will be hosting the Parkland Museums Network meeting on October 29th.

Christmas promotions were approved – Christmas Tea & Bake Sale and sponsoring the Santa Surprise Raffle with the cooperation of local businesses.

Other items discussed were fundraising plans for 2018.

Winter work plans for the museum were also discussed.

Ag safety day reaches many students Kelly Running Observer Staff

Maryfield was an arena of learning and excitement on Thursday, Sept. 28, with a Progressive Agriculture Safety Day held at the Maryfield Rink. Students from grade three to grade six attended from Maryfield, Wawota, Redvers, Bellegarde and schools from Manitoba.

The all-day event sponsored by Saskatchewan Association of Agricultural Societies and Exhibitions or SAASE, Enbridge, Farm Credit Association, the Maryfield Agriculture Soci-

ety and the Maryfield Health Centre was both an educational and fun day for the attending students.

The students spent the day rotating between stations and spending 10 minutes at each of the demonstrations. They participated in hands on activities and learning lessons focused on health and safety at home. Much of the day had an agricultural focus, but it also is general safety information such as fire safety, internet safety and sun safety included as well.

“Many in agriculture know someone whose life has been affected by

a farm related injury or death,” Nicki Ford and Sandra Johnston with the Maryfield Primary Health Centre explained when inviting The Observer for the day. “Most incidents could have been prevented with a few simple safety precautions.”

A total of 20 stations were set up to focus on everything from safety on the farm, to being home alone, to fire prevention, internet safety, and much more.

The educational day saw the community come together to ensure its success with many volunteers helping the day run smoothly.

Terry’s legacey continues to live on

Elementary students walked and ran around the Arcola School track on Friday, Sept. 29, to honour the memory of Terry Fox. They were joined by teachers and family.

Smiles abounded as Arcola Daycare youth partook in the Terry Fox Run at the Arcola School on Friday, Sept. 29.

Members of the Carlyle Elementary School Student Representative Council led the way on Friday, Sept.

29, during the annual Terry Fox Run.

Student leaders of the pack make their way to the school after being dropped off five miles out on Friday, Sept. 29. Arcola School raised $5,577.55 for the Terry Fox Foundation.

Carlyle Elementary School participated in their annual Terry Fox Run on Friday, Sept. 29. Students, teachers, family, and RCMP participated in the walk. Together they raised $7,061.60.

Weekly RCMP report Lynne Bell

The Carlyle RCMP detachment dealt with several calls from Thursday, Sept. 21 to Thursday, Sept. 28.

911 An individual called 911 to inform police about a property dispute stemming from a personal relationship and involving a matter which RCMP members had dealt with previously. This person was spoken to and reminded not to use 911 for this (nonemergency) purpose.

Another person was also warned by police about the misuse of 911 when they called to inform RCMP that their vehicle had broken down.

A hang-up call to the 911 emergency number from an unregistered phone was determined to be made from the Manor area. RCMP attempted to locate the caller, but were unable to do so.

Several misdials were made to 911.

Alcohol-related offences An individual was charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving and refusing to provide a breath sample.

An intoxicated male was arrested and lodged in cells until sober.

RCMP made patrols after receiving a report of a possibly-impaired driver in the Wawota area.

Members responded to a report of an underage youth who was alledgedly consuming alcohol.

Police made patrols after they received a call reporting an impaired driver.

Assault One person was arrested regarding a domestic assault which took place in the Carlyle area.

RCMP charged one person with assault and another individual with obstruction, outstanding warrants and giving police a false name regarding an assault which took place in the detachment area.

In Redvers, members found a reported assault to be a verbal argument. Police dealt with the situation, which was determined to a be civil matter.

Members are currently investigating an assault which allegedly took place in the Carlyle area.

Animal call(s) A motorist collided with a horse near Kisbey.

The animal died as a result of the accident.

RCMP were called to the Carlyle area after receiving a report of some bones being found.

These bones were determined to be non-human and were those of a large herbivore.

Assistance Carlyle RCMP assisted the Crown Prosecutors’ office by serving documents.

Members are assisting the Estevan Police Service with an investigation.

Breach of conditions Members are currently investigating a report of an individual who may have breached their release conditions.

Firearms/Weapons RCMP are currently investigating an incident in which a person or

persons fired a gun into the windows of a school, breaking windows.

An individual found knives in the Carlyle area and called police, who disposed of them.

Lost property RCMP received a report of lost keys.

Mischief Members are still investigating a mischief call regarding a possible fight.

Property damage A truck in Moose Mountain Park was vandalized.

An individual called the RCMP to report property damage. RCMP determined that the situation was a civil matter and advised this person accordingly.

RCMP received a report of property damage in Redvers. This was reported for information purposes.

Theft A theft in the Carlyle area is currently under investigation by RCMP. Traffic offences/ Collisions A collision on Hwys 9 and 13 resulted in minor injuries. An individual was charged with driving with undue care and attention.

A hit-and-run in Redvers resulted in damage to a vehicle.

A driver in Carlyle was charged with driving while suspended from doing so provincially.

Another individual was found to be driving while suspended from doing so.

RCMP dealt with four motorists who were using cellphones while driving. One driver was

Police issued a fine of $230 to a driver for not stopping at a posted stop sign.

RCMP issued several speeding tickets during this period, including one which resulted in a $352 fine.

Members issued four fines of $175 each to motorists who were driving but not wearing seatbelts. RCMP also issued several tickets and warnings to drivers for windshield, tailight, seatbelt, muffler and brake light violations.

A driver who was hauling an oversized

trailer with improper signage received a $90 fine.

RCMP responded to several complaints regarding motorists.

An individual driving a golf cart in Redvers was located by police and spoken to.

Uttering threats An individual contacted the RCMP after they received a letter in the mail. Upon investigation, members found this letter to be slanderous in nature.

A report of uttering threats from the Redvers area was deemed to be unfounded by RCMP.

A discussion of race sparked

Recently more and more NFL players are following Colin Kaepernick’s example of kneeling during the American national anthem. This peaceful protest was done to bring attention to the high number of unarmed people of colour being killed by police. Since Kaepernick took his stand by taking a knee, conKelly Running versation has sparked.

Observer Staff The other day a friend shared something on Facebook.

It was written by someone who claimed to be a marine (I don’t know if they were or were not for sure, on the internet you can be anything), but the gist of the message was that he fought under the flag and he knew people who gave their lives under the flag, thus it should be respected.

However, sport has forever been at the front of creating conversation on political and social issues: 1906 Olympics – Irish long jumper Peter O’Connor scaled the flagpole where the British flag was flying and waved the Irish flag himself, 1968 at the Olympics John Carlos and Tommie Smith raised their fists in the black power salute, and in 1967 Muhammad Ali refused to enlist in the Vietnam War. Athletes have a large following. They’re celebrities in our world and for them to use their stage to create meaningful dialogue based on their world, then by all means. One of the freedoms in North America is to have basic human rights and for many people of colour these rights are inhibited, so refusing to stand during the national anthem is simply a way to create conversation surrounding the inequality allowed under that flag.

I asked this individual about their thoughts and in the end they told me that as a white person they have faced racism. Yes, that is possible, I don’t disagree. However, it is not the same systemic racism felt by people of colour and I don’t think white people can actually understand that difference.

A different friend reminded me of Jane Elliott’s Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes exercise. Following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Elliot wanted her grade three class to understand why he was killed. In her classroom she split up kids due to eye colour… blue eyes were treated as inferior, while brown eyes were treated as superior. She has held this workshop throughout the world over the years to help white people understand what kind of racism people of colour feel every day.

On Youtube in these exercises she places those with the “wrong coloured eyes” in a situation that minorities experience every day, giving white people a small glimpse of what racism looks like. (www. youtube.com/watch?v=KHxFuO2Nk-0) She brings up race relations in a video from a 1992 Oprah Winfrey Show and points out that even when someone says, “I don’t see colour,” they’re acting in a prejudiced way. She brings up an African American man next to her asking if they see differences. The first thing people say is height, gender, age, and then - after some prompting - the crowd finally says colour.

She asks the young man if his colour is important to him and he says yes, many in the crowd nod in agreement. “Colour is important to people of colour,” she states and she continues by saying that pretending colour doesn’t exist it is like saying there is something wrong with colour and that she’s going to look past it.

So, I don’t feel as though I can judge someone going through something that I can’t understand because I can’t comprehend what they have been through to reach that point.

Please, thank you and no worries?

We were taught so well it became conversation we didn’t need to think about. If we wanted something we said “please.”

When someone did something for us we said “thank you”, to which the acceptable response was “you’re welcome.” It was a demonstration of good manners.

My Outlook Increasingly though, the Shelley Luedtke response “you’re welcome” has been replaced by phrases like “it was nothing”, “the pleasure is mine”, “no problem” or the even more casual “no probs.” My sister’s pet peeve is when people respond with “it’s the least I could do”, because if you really listen to the words, it’s like saying, ‘I wanted to do something to support or help you, and I considered all the options of what I could offer and I chose the smallest gesture that was an option to me’!

Get a group of people talking about politeness and manners and you will no doubt enter the fray of what connotes an appropriate response to an expression of thanks. Some eyes roll at the phrase “no worries” which we hear a lot, while others question what it even means. Were we worried about the impending interaction and whether or not there might be a successful outcome? Is that why “no problem” is in such abundant use?

Research suggests there are generational differences that indicate how we will respond to an expression of thanks. Millennials are more likely to say “no problem”, and will use “you’re welcome” only sarcastically--to point out if they haven’t been thanked. Baby Boomers on the other hand favour “you’re welcome” and find variations of the casual “no problem” rather annoying. The Gen Xers meanwhile say they feel caught in the middle because one response or another is likely to upset or confound one generation or another.

sion, a psychologist determined that saying “you’re welcome” was actually a missed opportunity, and insisted instead we should be responding with “I know you’d do the same for me.” He remarked that amongst its advantages it sets up a reciprocal agreement and ensures the other individual feels obligated to pay back the favour at some point in the future. So, according to his thesis, an expression of gratitude should be marked by dialogue ensuring you understand I am expecting you will do something, someday for me. Power and payback, in his estimation, shouldn’t be overlooked as a response to a remark of “thank you.”

Wow. Someone please explain how we got politeness and gratitude so messed up.

Good manners and civil dialogue are important and we don’t need to look too far to remember why. But instead of getting caught up in how someone responds to our words of thanks it’s perhaps more meaningful to take a step back and remember why we are expressing thanks in the first place.

Someone has done something for us, and whether it was an everyday courtesy or an elaborate gesture, what matters is that we let them know we appreciate who they are and what they have done… when we can, of course. Because some of the most memorable and touching gestures are often done at a time when we are simply unable to find any words--let alone the right words. Yet our hearts swell with a gratitude that cannot be contained.

We can, of course, continue to get exasperated over how politeness is expressed and what we feel meets the bar as far as manners are concerned.

But that will only result in frustration. Instead of getting worked up over how the dialogue should go, it might be best to worry less about adequate or inadequate responses and focus more on what we are expressing gratefulness for. Rather than worrying about their mouths being filled with appropriate words, we can work on our hearts being filled with abundant thanksgiving.

That’s my outlook.

Whether you enjoy hockey, baseball, football, soccer or any other sport, the roaring crowd, sights and smells that fill an arena or stadium have something to offer everyone. A little planning can help keep your costs under control, and you can apply the ideas below to almost any sporting event.

Save money on the tickets.

You may be sticking with your home team through thick and thin, but you can still look for ways to save money. Avoiding the most popular games, such as those scheduled on the weekends or when your team plays against big-name teams, can be help. To further maximize your savings, consider the following tips: • Find tickets on reseller websites. Buying tickets from a scalper could save you money, but it also opens you up to the

possibility of getting scammed or involved in unlawful activity. Instead, you could look for secondhand tickets on legitimate reseller websites that verify authenticity and guarantee your purchase.

• Connect with a season ticket holder. Try to connect with a season ticket holder who can’t make a game and offer to buy their tickets. Even if they’re going to the game, a season ticket holder might be able to get you a good deal. For instance, Major League Soccer (MLS) season ticket members can sometimes get a discount on additional tickets.

• Check for an employee discount. Some companies offer their employees discounted tickets to sporting events as a benefit. Government employees and current military members or veterans may also be eligible. However, sometimes you can only choose from a limited list of games.

• Join the fan club. Becoming a member of a team’s official fan club can cost approximately $20 to $40 a year, depending on the team, but could more than pay for itself with discounts on tickets or gear and access to special events.

• Go during the preseason. Preseason tickets can be especially cheap. You may not get to see your favorite players on the field, but you could still save money while spending quality time with your kids or friends.

• Try the minor league. A minor league game can be a fun alternative to a major league game. Some of the teams have an enthusiastic and loyal fan base and the venues are often smaller, which lets you get closer to the action. The extras, like parking and snacks, are often cheaper as well.

Timing your purchase can also be important. If you suspect a game will sell out, it may be better to buy early than risk having to pay above face value on a reseller site. With less popular games, ticket prices tend to drop as game day approaches.

Compare transportation options. Public transportation isn’t a guaranteed money saver if you’re going with a large group. Carpooling or splitting the cost of a ride from a car-sharing app could be cheaper. If you’re driving, look for off-premises parking lots.

You may need to walk a bit, but you’ll also be able to save money and avoid some of the post-game traffic.

Eat before or, if permitted, bring snacks. Everyone knows stadium food is expensive and filling up on a big meal before the game can help you avoid cravings. Unbeknownst to some fans, some venues might let you bring in outside food (like the Rogers Centre). However, there’s often a strict bag policy, which could limit the size of your bag and may require bags to be transparent.

What you need to know about rabies Rabies is a virus that infects the nerves of the body, and then travels up to infect the brain. Once an animal or human has developed symptoms related to the virus, there is very little chance of survival. In animals, it is nearly always fatal. Rabies is transmitted through saliva, by either a bite from an infected animal or saliva entering an already present scratch. The scary part about rabies is that it can be found in any mammal and is easily transmitted from one animal to another, including humans.

Rabies is endemic in this part of the world, meaning that is always present. Every year there are several cases of wild animals found to have

rabies, and even a few cases of domestic animals found to be positive. The best defense against rabies is vaccination.

The vaccine works by causing the animal to produce antibodies that will bind to the virus as soon as it enters to body, making it unable to cause disease. But no vaccine is 100% effective, so if you believe your animal has been bitten by a wild animal you should see your veterinarian and receive a booster rabies vaccine. We recommend The timeline between contracting the virus and developing disease is unpredictable. An animal can become sick within five days of contracting the virus or five years, there is no way to know when

it may happen. There is very little chance of successful treatment as soon as symptoms develop. Symptoms can be vague at first and can manifest as either the rabid form or the paralytic form. Meaning they can either become aggressive and agitated or they can be paralyzed and die from respiratory failure.

If you believe your animal has had contact with rabies you should call your personal health care provider because you will also need to be treated for potential rabies exposure. When it comes to rabies it is better to be safe than sorry.

Darlene Olsen named Look Good Feel Better Heritage Hero Lynne Bell

Arcola’s Darlene Olsen is one of only 25 honourees from across Canada who have been named “Heritage Heroes” by Look Good Feel Better - in recognition of Olsen’s 20 years of fundraising and volunteering for the charity, which works to empower and support women with cancer.

“Darlene has not only dedicated countless volunteer hours over 20 years, but has also been an enthusiastic and impressive fundraiser for Look Good Feel Better, having raised more than $200,000,” says Look Good Feel Better CEO and president, Dee Diaz.

“Because of her time and philanthropic investment in the program, women and teens with cancer can feel more like themselves again.”

“We are incredibly grateful to Darlene - for whom making a difference is just part of her

DNA, coupled with the Mary Kay culture of giving back.”

Olsen - described by LGFB as a “volunteer/ fundraiser extraordinaire,” says: “I feel so humbled. It’s an honour, but it’s not about me.

I get much more back volunteering than I give.

And I couldn’t do any of it without the help of many, many people.”

“It’s really rewarding to help other women and to be at the Look Good Feel Better workshops and see what a difference it makes.”

“I just do it because I enjoy it and I enjoy helping the women feel better about themselves.”

As a senior sales director for Mary Kay Cosmetics and as a volunteer of two decades for the Look Good Feel Better program at the Allan Blair Cancer Centre at Regina’s Pasqua Hospital, Olsen says raising money for the cause via Arcola’s Creative Tables For Cancer fundraiser (and other initiatives)

was a natural next step for her as a volunteer.

“I’ve been with Mary Kay nearly 40 years,” says Olsen. “About 25 years ago, Look Good Feel Better came to Canada and 20 years ago, it came to Regina. When I heard about it and the opportunity to volunteer, I thought: ‘Geez, I’d like to do that.’”

Olsen says Look Good Feel Better is a free program dedicated to empowering women to manage the effects of cancer and cancer treatments - specifically as they affect a woman’s appearance.

“If a woman can look more like herself, she can feel more like herself and manage the disease and her life with greater confidence,” says Olsen.

“And the workshops are a reprieve from the effects of cancer on a woman - physically and emotionally.”

“I have never had cancer, so I really don’t know what people go through,” she adds.

“I’ve had close friends who have had cancer and some have lost their battle. What I do know about cancer is that it’s all about the cancer and when people with cancer are in the hospital, it’s all about the treatment.

And if that’s done, it’s talking about the next treatment.”

“Even when people with the disease leave the cancer clinic, they’re asked ‘How are you?’ or ‘How can I help you?’

And even though it’s said with the very best of intentions, it’s still all about the cancer.”

“At the Look Good Feel Better workshops, that’s two-and-a-half hours where it’s all about them,” says Olsen. “We don’t talk about cancer; we laugh and it’s a time where they can forget about cancer.”

“At first, a lot of the women are nervous, but within 10 minutes, they’re laughing. That’s because they find out their Team Leader - me is a goofball,” laughs Olsen. “But they don’t have to pretend, either.”

“But I would say that almost all of the women we see at our workshops are really, really happy at the end of the session.”

Olsen says that when she makes the two-hour trip into Regina from her Arcola-area home to conduct a Look Good Feel Better workshop, she “has no idea who I’ll see that day, or what their story is.”

“When I first started volunteering 20 years ago, the ladies were all older women and most of them were homemakers. Very few women we saw at workshops back then had jobs outside the home,” she says.

“Now, we see a huge cross-section of women of all ages and from all walks of life.”

“The youngest I’ve seen was a 16-year-old and the oldest was an 85-year-old lady. And we’re also seeing younger and younger women with cancer at our Look Good Feel Better workshops. We’ve seen young moms in their thirties with kids, full-time jobs and busy lives.”

“People often ask me if volunteering with Look Good Feel Better breaks my heart, but it doesn’t<’ says Olsen. “It warms my heart.”

“That’s why I volunteer. I get much more out of it than the wonderful women we work with.”

Each participant in a Look Good Feel Better receives a makeover as well as a case filled with cosmetics and skincare, body care and nail care products.

“The products are donated by many cosmetics companies,” says Olsen. “And every

“Each case is actually sealed shut,” she explains. “That way, when we start to work on a client’s makeover, we cut the seal, use those products and that kit is hers.

At the end of the session, each woman walks away with about $300 worth of product and they know how to use it. The products we use are provided by Look Good Feel Better and they’re from a lot of different cosmetic companies - Mary Kay, MAC, Revlon and many, many more.”

“But we are not at a workshop to sell product,” says Olsen. “And confidentiality is key, too. To the women in our workshops, I’m just Darlene. I don’t know the ladies and they don’t know me.”

The ladies who do know Olsen are many and if they haven’t been the subject of her generosity and joie de vivre at a Look Good Feel Better workshop in Regina, they’ve seen her commitment to supporting women with cancer at Arcola’s annual Creative Tables For Cancer fundraiser, which she founded.

The annual event will be marking its 10th year of fun and fundraising in 2017, and Olsen says: “It’s an event that happens because of the efforts of many, many people - not just me.”

Creative Tables routinely sells out as individuals, businesses and organizations enjoy an elegant and inspiring

evening at extravagantly-decorated theme tables.

“It’s people coming together who really care about other people and I really believe that if all of us work together, miracles can happen,” says Olsen.

“When people are at cancer clinics, they have so much more on their minds than paying attention to the program brochures,” she adds.

“In addition to supporting Look Good Feel Better financially, Creative Tables and other events and fundraisers I’m involved in make people aware that Look Good Feel Better is right here in Saskatchewan. So unfortunately, if someone does receive a cancer diagnosis, they’ll remember Creative Tables and check out Look Good Feel Better.”

“As far as volunteering and fundraising, the more people that know about Look Good Feel Better before they get a cancer diagnosis, the better,” says Olsen.

“Look Good Feel Better is a fantastic program,” she adds. “It’s not about the makeup or the wigs. It’s all about making the women fel better about themselves.”

Did you know that one in nine Canadian women are predisposed to developing breast cancer? Thankfully, researchers are always looking for new ways to help prevent, detect and treat this destructive disease. Every October, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) invites all Canadians, whether personally touched by the disease or not, to step forward and help raise funds and awareness in support of breast cancer research.

New methods of diagnosis A key area of research looks at better ways to diagnose breast cancer. Currently, the most reliable method to detect the disease remains mammography screenings; however, the test is subject to certain limitations. Here are three noteworthy examples of groundbreaking alternatives: • Digital breast tomosynthesis detects cancer more easily in patients with dense breasts and helps radiologists see more clearly whether or not a suspicious area contains cancerous cells. This type of imaging may help lower the number of false positive and false negative results sometimes produced by standard mammography testing.

• Radioactive seed localization helps doctors better target abnormal tissue in the breast that can’t be felt by hand. Radiologists implant the radioactive seeds in the area of concern during an X-ray or CT scan to effectively detect the presence of cancerous cells.

• Circulating tumour cells are found in the bloodstream of certain women diagnosed with breast cancer. Instead of directly targeting cancerous cells in the breast, doctors may perform a CellSearch circulating tumour cell (CTC) test to confirm a positive diagnosis.

The Oxbow Black Knights Jr. Girls team earned first place at the Arcola Jr. Girls annual tournament. The five-team round robin only saw the Black Knights lose one set throughout the day, for a nearly perfect record leading up to the final. The Black Knights took on the host team in the final.

Another sorry note – we had to say good-bye to Gloria Girard and Dave Ince who have decided to move from Alida and make their new home in Sylvan Lake, AB where they would be closer to her son Steven and Brandi Bradshaw and the grandchildren.

Visiting with Margaret and Brian Peet over the weekend were her sister Pauline Craggs and her mother Claire Germain (Regina). On Sept. 30 the Peet family (including Brian, Margaret, Parry, Lynette, Chad, Sam and their families, as well as Grandma Claire and Pauline) all met in the field for a picnic supper in honor of Margaret’s birthday. Claire and Alice (Estevan) visited with the family.

Gray and Edel Cowan attended the fall supper in Storthoaks on Oct. 1 where a good crowd was in attendance. Lots and lots of delicious food, as always, was available, especially those deserts, m-m-m good.

We are officially into the fall season, and now right into October – when this comes into print there will ONLY be TWO WEEKS (14 days) until the doors open for the first night of the ALIDA HAUNTED HOUSE. Oh my gosh – time is a going and still much work to be done. That’s right folks – the HAUNTED HOUSE is back home at the Alida rink. Check out the social media, ads and posters for dates, times and information – or give Shelly Cowan a call (evenings 306-443-2295).

Speaking of the Rink – I must mention that most of the work at long last has now been completed – HALLELUJAH! There were days and times that one was wondering if the renovations would ever be done – but perseverance does pay off.

Now furnishings etc. have to be put back where one wishes for things to go. If nothing else make sure you come visit the rink during the Haunted House evenings or/and Fun Fair day. Until then we will be kept BUSY. See you soon - hopefully.

Angela Down, Gordon Lucier, Luther and Janice Boehmer, and Doug and Yvonne Down travelled to Saskatoon to attend Hayley Down’s white coat ceremony. This was a very impressive luncheon and ceremony where first year students were presented with their white lab coats and stethoscopes.

There were 81 students enrolled this year from the Yukon, BC, Sask., Man., and Alberta. Out of the 81 students only 9 were males. This same evening they all attended the veterinary medicine student and faculty awards banquet and ceremony. Hayley received the Dr. Bankier Award in recognition for outstanding achievement. This award has a monetary value of $1800.00 and was one of the 6 awards presented to 1st year veterinary students.

Newcomers to Wawota would include Renee Baudu and her family, Kinley, Raelynn and Bostyn Jones who will be renting Linda Siebel’s home on Choo Foo Crescent; Gwenn Glasser and her daugh-

ter, Baylee are renting Blair Toms house on Pipestone Ave. The Roman Catholic Church welcomed a new priest, Felipe Faustino.

In 1919 a large brick building was built on Main Street. This building housed The Union Bank. In 1925 The Union Bank became The Royal Bank and until May of 2017 served the Wawota and District well. Since then Dee Brickley has a new business, “The Beauty Parlour” started there. They will offer, facials, pedicures, manicures, skin tightening, body contouring and much more. Joan(Birnie) Werner will be in charge of the manicures and pedicures.

Wendy Brehaut sold her flower shoppe, Grammie’s Gift Emporium to Sydney Shire in the spring. Sydney has renamed it “Ivy and Elm” and also has her photography “Sydney Boustead Photography” The Wawota Garage has been sold to Field’s Trucking of Radville. Dan and Margreuite Van Dresar and staff can take a well deserved rest.

Flyin’ High at the Eagle Showdown offers racing fans a weekend of cars, camping and cabaret. The annual event offers stock car racing fans a weekend of action and excitement at the track, west of Manor.

Manor’s Flyin’ High at the Eagle Showdown features a day at the races and a night at the cabaret, all of which is made possible by the Big Eagle and Galloway families, as well as a devoted cadre of volunteers. Derrick Big Eagle’s community involvement extends to both welcoming drivers and fans from other parts of Canada and the U.S. to the facility, but also encouraging stock car drivers of all ages. BigEagle is pictured here giving a pep talk to some of the day’s youngest racers prior to the competition’s start.

Every year since it started, Manor’s Flyin’ High at the Eagle Showdown has welcomed competitors and fans of all ages. This year, 8-year-old Jagger Ashworth of Weyburn brought his slingshot (vehicle) to the track. Jagger has competed in Estevan, Williston, North Dakota and now, Manor.

The 2017 edition of Flyin’ High at the Eagle Showdown once again thrilled racing fans at the Big Eagle race track west of Manor. Presented by Eagle Motorsports and Joey Galloway Racing, the event featured competition in four classes of stock car racing: Hobby Stocks, Street Stocks, Modifieds and Slingshots. The event attracts veteran and new drivers and longtime competitor Riley Raynard, 20, of Lampman (pictured) says: “I’ve ben coming here since it started. It’s my favourite and Derrick (Big Eagle) always puts on a great show.”

The track is back! After a one-year hiatus, The Flyin’ Eagle Showdown made a welcome return to the area on Saturday, Sept. 20. Four classes of racing thrilled spectators this year - Hobby Stocks, Street Stocks, Modifieds - and new this year - Slingshots.

No matter what the rest of the year looks like, it always seems as though things just “shift into high” at this time of year. Not only are the days becoming noticeably shorter, but the hours seem to be clicking past me much more quickly than they did a few weeks ago.

Certainly the farmers are likely feeling the time fly by. While the moisture we’ve received isn’t “unwelcome”, it has created complications for those with crops still in the field. Hopefully, the cold and damp conditions will ease off long enough for everyone to finish bringing in the harvest soon.

September was certainly a busy month for Jennie Wilton. Over the

Labour Day Long Weekend, Trudi Morrison (Jennie’s sister) came from Calgary for a visit. The following week, Jennie traveled up to Winnipeg to visit with Darlene Grenkow and her family. Then last week, Jennie went into Regina to spend some time with Cory and Jodi Wilton and their family.

At the end of the month, Jennie was also pleased to welcome Margie Istace into the 6-plex.

Terry Lynn Gittens and Faye Cummins from Bentley, AB enjoyed a week in Kennedy, visiting with several people including members of the LaRonge, Cummins and Cancade families.

While here, they had the chance to attend Anita Margett’s 75th Birthday Party in Moosomin.

They were joined by: Joe and John LaRonge (Whitewood), Margaret Debenham and Yvonne Bertalon (Kennedy), Doreen Cancade (Kipling), Ralph Margetts and Michelle Davidson (Moosomin). As well, they took the opportunity to visit Dorothy and her son Darin Domes in Weyburn; and had the chance to take in the delicious pulled pork supper at the Care Home in Kipling.

Bill Kell has been home with Bonnie and recuperating for a little while now. He is doing well, although he still has to rely on a wheelchair.

Clair Dorrance is also home and is doing well.

on September 28th was a great success. Things got under way at 10 am.

There were a total of 44 players – 12 tables – taking part in the tournament. Those in attendance were treated to a lunch and dinner, both provided by members of the Kennedy Bridge Club and the Kennedy Friendship Center. All the proceeds from the event will go to the Friendship Center.

The UCW Supper held on Sunday, Oct. 1st was also a tremendous success. Approximately 300 people turned out, from the Kennedy area as well as from several other nearby communities including: Wawota, Whitewood and Kipling.

As always, the meal was delicious. Hats off to all who were involved for their dedication and hard work.

Students at Kennedy Langbank School did well in their first volleyball games of the season. The Panthers played against the team from Broadview at home on Monday night. They will travel up to Broadview on the 16th.

Cecile H. George 1924 - 2017 Cecile passed away on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at the Redvers Health Centre Long Term Care Facility, Redvers, SK at the age of 93 years.

Cecile will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Lorraine (Leon) Magotiaux and Joanne (John Proznick) Toms; grandchildren, Brian (Shaundell) Magotiaux, Jason (Heidi) Magotiaux, Jody (Andrea) Magotiaux, Ryan (Melissa) Toms, Sherri (Jody) Toms; great grandchildren, Dakota and Justice Boutin, Sasha Toms, Taylor, Braeden, Kyliegh, Kennedy, Colby, Blair and Josh; sister, Agnes Nogue; sister in law, Madeleine Remillard as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Cecile was predeceased by her husband Alphonse; parents, Henry and Jeanne Stringer; daughter Lorraine; numerous siblings as well as Alphonse`s siblings.

The Funeral Mass was held on Friday, September 29, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Maurice R.C. Church, Bellegarde, SK with Rev. Wilfred Calinawan presiding. Interment took place at the St. Maurice Parish Cemetery with lunch at the Bellegarde Community Hall.

If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Redvers & District Community Health Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 766, Redvers, SK, S0C 2H0.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Hall Funeral Services, Redvers.

Thank you A special Thank You to Fr. Wilfred Calinawan who spent time with mom the evening of her passing and celebrating the service. To the church choir, CWL ladies for lunch and to all the grandchildren and great grandchildren for making mom’s farewell special, to all who attended the service and all who participated, for the many cards, flowers and kind words expressed through social media. HALL: Albert Edward Hall passed away Friday, Sept. 15, 2017 in Arcola, SK at the age of 90 years.

Bert is survived by his loving wife, Florence; daughters Barb (Ed) Szasz, Cheryl Hall, special niece Margaret (Gene) Buniulis; 4 grandsons; 1 great grandson and 1 great granddaughter. The funeral was held Wed., Sept. 20, 2017 at Carlyle United Church.
