Carlyle PureChem Cougars home opener attracts 500+ fans Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle PureChem Cougars’ home opener saw more than 500 people attend, which was a pleasant surprise as the Cougars had hoped to pack the rink prior to the doors opening. The rink was filled with fans on Friday, Nov. 4, and it was an exciting night of hockey.

“We just want to express our gratitude to the fans that came out,” Dallas Lequyer, President of the Cougars Board and player, stated. “It was overwhelming. We had in the neighbourhood of 500 people through the door and the 50/50 was $950!”

“We are going to do free admission again to our game Sunday night [Nov. 13] at 7 p.m. against Midale.”

For the first time, the Carlyle Skating Club will host the Region 1 and Region 6 Invitational Skating Competition, January 14 and 15, 2017 at the Carlyle Sports Arena. Up to 150 skaters, their families, and spectators from throughout the province will visit Carlyle for this weekend event.

Carlyle Mayor, Councillors sworn in for new term

Carlyle’s Mayor and Councillors took their Oath of Office for a four-year-term on Wednesday, Nov. 2 in Carlyle. Carlyle’s Mayor and Councillors took their Oath of Office for a four year term at Town Council’s regular meeting, held Wednesday, Nov. 2 at the Carlyle Civic Centre. Mayor Wayne Orsted was re-elected by acclamation and welcomed council, saying: “Welcome back to the table, everyone. Congratulations on your election and re-election.”

Returning councillors are: John Brownlee, Dean Hoffman, Darcy Moore, Brian Romaniuk and Jenn Sedor; while Devin Faber is Carlyle’s newest alderman.

Making Hockey History: Lampman’s Robin Ulrich Lynne Bell

As the first-ever full-time female hockey head coach at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, 30-year-old Robin Ulrich describes her new role as “A fantastic opportunity. It’s basically the highest level of women’s hockey outside of the national team.”

This season, the Lampman native was appointed interim head coach of the University’s Huskies women’s hockey team, while the team’s head coach Steve Kook takes a one-year sabbatical for professional development.

“I was able to get a leave of absence from my contract with my school division,” says Ulrich, who teaches high school Physical Education in Lampman.

“They were awesome letting me take the opportunity.”

“The entire community of Lampman has been really supportive and they’ve always helped me celebrate. Even last weekend, four of the kids I taught last year showed up to cheer the Huskies on. They had a sign that said ‘Go Coach DJ Rob’. The players joked that the coach has a sign, but they don’t.”

Ulrich says her hometown has supported her hockey ambitions from the very beginning.

“I started out figure skating as a kid, but I was friends with all the guys in my class and they all played hockey. So I figured maybe I should play too,” she says. “I went from figure skating to playing hockey.

When I was about nine-years-old, I started to play hockey. It was a pretty natural thing in Lampman. I was friends with all the guys who played and there were a few girls from town who played hockey then in Lampman. I wasn’t the only one. There was another girl from my grade who played on the same team as I did.”

“I never had those terrible stories about girls playing hockey,” adds Ulrich. “People just accepted it in Lampman. I got dressed in a different dressing room than the boys, but it wasn’t like one of those stories with the lone girl player shoved behind a furnace, sitting on a pail or something like that.”

“As for challenges, there’s nothing I ever recall being horribly bad,” she says. “If you had a ponytail-and I did- that made you a bit of a target with other teams sometimes. And sometimes, with checking, but they were all just things that as a player, you learn to deal with.”

“I was lucky enough that I got to play on both boys and girls teams every year growing up, except for grades 11 and 12 when I only played girls hockey.”

“There was one year I played for four different teams-boys peewee house, girls peewee, a boys provincial tier team and midget girls.”

“My Uncle Buzz (Allan Fleck) and my cousin Tyler (Fleck) both played hockey at a pretty high level, so they encouraged me a lot, too.”

Ulrich’s mother, Maureen Ulrich has written young adult novels which take their inspiration-in part- from her daughter’s early days as a hockey player.

“Mom’s books were inspired by the stories of all the things that happened while I was playing hockey as a kid,” says Ulrich. “But by no means are they about me. I’m not a character.”

“I was in university when they came out, and for me it was very inspiring to see her perseverance, especially with the first book. She approached a number of different publishers and eventually, she got one.

It would have been very easy for her to quit, but she pushed through and that’s very inspiring to me.”

After being scouted, Ulrich agreed to play hockey for the University of Saskatchewan’s Huskies, starting in 2004. In addition to her successful university hockey career, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology degree and a Bachelor of Education degree.

During her five-year tenure playing defence, she was voted team captain and won the CanadaWest Conference Student Athlete Award and the Huskie Athletics Female All-Around Athlete Award.

After her playing career, she was a Huskies assistant coach for five years and a scout for two years, some of it dones double-duty from a distance while she taught full-time in Lampman.

“Coaching is very similar to teaching,” says Ulrich.

“It’s all about your relationships with people. With your players, you trust and believe in them. Our players are scouted, so there’s a reason that they fit our Huskie hockey player mould. We have high expectations for them- in hockey, in the classroom and in the community. “They do an amazing job,” she says, adding that she continues to learn from the players she coaches.

“We ask a lot of them, too. Every day, they do four or five hours of hockey, besides school. And they keep their(academic) averages up, too. I see them on the bus on our way to a tournament, for example and I see how hard they work.”

Ulrich says that members of the team come with both talent and an excellent work ethic.

“All of our players are recruited,” she says. “They might come from a AAA team or their provincial team.

Our players are from Saskatchewan, Alberta, B.C. And Manitoba.”

“They all come with their different backgrounds and systems and they’ve all come from different teams. Everyone’s a good player at this level, but the challenge is to make them a team.”

“Something you notice every year is skating, shooting and ability with the puck is across the board much higher. The kids just seem to be getting better every year.”

“It’s really exciting and inspiring,” she adds. “With our older players, it creates an internal competitionwhich is good because it pushes everybody to be better.”

Weekly RCMP report Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle Detachment of the RCMP responded to a variety of calls between Friday, Oct. 28, and Thursday, Nov. 3.

911 calls A 911 call was received during this time, which was a non-emergency.

Assault There was an assault reported in Redvers, but no charges were laid.

An assault at Kenosee Lake resulted in charges.

Assistance Members are preparing for Remembrance Day and attending services in Red Serge.

Individuals’ release conditions were modified, so RCMP conducted checks to ensure they were being followed.

Members provided assistance in mental health calls and child welfare calls.

An individual called about a photo being shared on Facebook.

RCMP remind people to be careful of what they post on the internet.

Driving infractions An individual was stopped and found to be driving while disqualified.

There was a vehicle stopped for improper

signage and it was found the driver was disqualified.

Patrols were made for an individual in the Carlyle area who was driving while disqualified.

Two individuals were fined $580 for not having their motor vehicle insured.

Three people were fined for not stopping at stop signs. Each ticket was for $230.

An individual was stopped for speeding and ticketed, they were also given numerous inspection tickets for insufficiencies regarding their vehicle.

Approximately 30 speeders were dealt with in the last week and two high tickets included one for $380 and the other for $396.

Three seatbelt tickets were issued during this time. Each ticket was for $175.

A careless driving investigation took place.

Several inspection tickets were issued.

An individual was fined $150 for improper or no driver’s licence.

Two people were charged with unsecure loads; this is a fine of $175.

Fraud A fraud occurred and the individual’s bank is helping them address the matter.

There was a fraud reported in the Carlyle area.

A fraud was reported in Kisbey.

Alcohol related offences An impaired driver was reported in the

Wawota area.

There was an impaired driver reported in the Carlyle area, but the individual was not located.

An intoxicated individual in a residence left once police were called.

There was an intoxicated individual from the Carlyle area who was picked up and lodged in cells until sober.

An intoxicated individual was left at the gas station at Kenosee Lake. The individuals the intoxicated person was with drove away without paying for gas.

The intoxicated person was lodged in cells until sober and the payment for gas was made.

2018 Tim Hortons Brier awarded to Regina There will be a distinctively green flavour to the Tim Hortons Brier in approximately 17 months.

The 2018 Canadian Men’s Curling Championship will be staged at the Brandt Centre in Regina from March 3-11, it was announced today by Curling Canada.

“Curling’s roots go deep in the province of Saskatchewan, and based on past history, I have no doubt that the city of Regina will embrace the 2018 Tim Hortons Brier,” said Peter Inch, Chair of the Curling Canada Board of Governors. “The Tim Hortons Brier is the world’s most famous curling championship, and Regina is in for a memorable nine days of thrilling action, on and off the ice.”

The Brandt Centre, part of the Evraz Place complex, is home to the Western Hockey League’s Regina Pats. The arena also has a significant history of hosting major curling events — most recently, the 2011 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship, won by Canada’s Jeff Stoughton. This 6,000-seat arena with executive skyboxes and full-service concessions regularly hosts large sporting events, concerts, championship curling, award shows, conventions and trade shows.

The Tim Hortons Brier has been played at the Brandt Centre twice — in 2006 (won by Quebec’s Jean-Michel Ménard) and 1992 (won by Manitoba’s Vic Peters). Previous Regina-hosted Briers took place in 1976 (the memorable victory by Newfoundland/Labrador’s Jack MacDuff) and 1955 (equally memorable as Garnet Campbell of Avonlea and his three brothers won Saskatchewan’s first Brier title).

Other major past events at the Brandt Centre include the 2008 and 1998 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the 2002 World Financial Group Continental Cup, the 2001 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Canadian Curling Trials and the 1983 World Men’s Championship (won by Canada’s Ed Werenich).

Rick Folk’s 1980 victory is the most recent for a Saskatchewan entry.

“This is an exciting time for Saskatchewan curling, and the 2018 Tim Hortons Brier will be a great opportunity to continue building our sport in this province,” said Ashley Howard, Executive-Director of CurlSask. “The bid committee did a wonderful job behind the scenes in convincing Curling Canada to bring the Tim Hortons Brier to Regina, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store, on and off the ice, in 2018.”

A 16-team field will make its Tim Hortons Brier debut in Regina. The expanded field is being utilized as a pilot after the format was approved at Curling Canada’s Annual Meetings this past summer in Cornwall, Ont. The field will feature the 14 provincial/territorial champions of Curling Canada’s Member Associations, along with the defending champion Team Canada. The qualifying process for the 16th team is still being determined and will be announced later.

While more teams will be competing, the Tim Hortons Brier will be played over its traditional nineday, 22-draw schedule, using a two-pool, two-stage round-robin format similar to that used at the Canadian Juniors and Canadian Mixed championships.

The 2018 Brier will mark the 14th year of title sponsorship by Tim Hortons, one of North America’s largest restaurant chains in the quick-service segment.

“Tim Hortons is a proud supporter of Canadian curling and we are honoured to return as the title sponsor of the 2018 Brier,” said Sami Siddiqui, President of Tim Hortons Canada. “We look forward to celebrating this exciting event alongside the Regina community.”

The winner of the 2018 Tim Hortons Brier will represent Canada a month later at the World Men’s Curling Championship in Las Vegas. Additionally, the winning team will qualify for the 2019 World Financial Group Continental Cup, and will return to defend its title as Team Canada at the 2019 Tim Hortons Brier.

“It was a long process, and our bid committee put in a lot of hours, however the end result was worth it,” said Bid Committee Chairperson Bernadette McIntyre. “We were ecstatic to hear that Curling Canada had faith in our committee, and our city, to host the 2018 Tim Hortons Brier, and we’re going set our sights on putting together an amazing event for the players, fans and visitors from across the country.”

Tickets for the 2018 Tim Hortons Brier, the 89th edition of the championship, are expected to go on sale early in 2017.

The Brier has been played in 31 cities across Canada, from Victoria to St. John’s. Manitoba and Alberta are tied for victories with 27 apiece. New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut have yet to win.

The 2017 Tim Hortons Brier is scheduled for March 4-12 in St. John’s.

Winter driving reminder

The RCMP would like to remind individuals that with winter weather on the brink drivers should be cautious.

The RCMP recommends: - slow down, posted speed limits are for ideal driving conditions, and it’s important to adjust your speed accordingly.

- Leave more distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you to give yourself more stopping time.

- Give yourself extra time to get to your destination so you’re not tempted to drive too fast for the road conditions.

- Clear snow from your vehicle and be sure your windows are completely defrosted before you drive.

- Make sure your headlights and taillights are functioning properly and are clear of snow so that you can see (and be seen) in low visibility.

- If you do have to travel, check the weather forecast and the Highway Hotline before you go and make sure your vehicle has an emergency kit.

- Consider installing winter tires if you don’t have them already, but don’t let them give you false security. The most important thing you can do while driving in winter is to slow down.

Fruit cocktail and bearing fruit that will last A sweet seven year old showed her grandfather a small tomato plant she had started from seed in a second-grade school project. She explained that from one tiny seed would come a plant which would grow many tomatoes that would each have many seeds.

“And if all of those seeds were planted and grew more tomatoes, and you planted all of those seeds, in a few seasons you would have millions of tomatoes. All,” she said in amazement, “from one little seed.”

Then she said, “I almost killed my plant. I left it in a dark room and forgot to water it. When I remembered the plant, it was all wilted and dead looking. I cried because I thought of all of those millions of tomatoes that would never grow.”

Maybe all it needed was some water and some light to bring life back. Russell Ballard) What great joy the little girl experienced with her success. What a biblical metaphor it suggests.

A Chilean gardener has cultivated an awardwinning tree that grows apricots, plums, cherries, peaches and nectarines. Some call it the “fruit cocktail” tree. The process involves grafting branches from different species, but it is the tree’s sap that flows through all the limbs.

“If you think about it, this isn’t all that different from the way the Lord is grafting his own spiritual fruits into your heart.” (from The Word Among Us October 2016) To expand the comparison still further, in a sermon “Bearing Much fruit” Bob Ashcroft cited statistics of church closures in America and spiritual apathy. He explained that a secular study projected that by the year 2050 Christianity will be so obscure that it will have absolutely no effect on the moral and ethical condition of America.

Check your experience of church and worship to see how true this statement is. How important is the future of faith and church life to you? To your children?

In notes on his reflection on John 15:1-17, Ashcroft noted the following points: “Jesus is the vine; He is our source. He is the true vine… We are the branches.

“A branch has no life by itself. The branches are many, growing all over the place but all connected to the same vine. He is the center of our unity…

Though the Earth is the Lord’s, it bears no fruit unless He works it.

The RCMP also recommends precautions are taken to prevent problems before they even occur: 1. Get your vehicle ready for winter in the fall.

2. Consider installing four matching winter tires.

3. Pack an emergency kit.

4. Learn and practice winter driving techniques before you need them.

5. Plan your trip, check roads and weather condi tions.

6. Remove all snow and frost from your vehicle before each trip.

7. Give yourself extra time in bad weather.

8. Avoid using cruise control on slippery roads.

9. Travel with a fully charged cell phone.

10. SLOW DOWN and WEAR your seatbelt.

Prevention is better than recovery. Winter driving can be risky, so be prepared. Traction changes with temperature.

If you do get into a collision, always make sure its safe to get out of the vehicle. If your vehicle is driveable and there are no injuries pull off to the side of the road away from traffic. If your collision involved another vehicle make sure to exchange information before leaving the scene.

If you can, take photos of damage on both vehicles. Make sure to get the plate number, make, and model of the vehicle, and the other drivers’ customer number. This will assist your adjusters in linking the files once both parties have reported.

If your vehicle isn’t driveable contact your local police department. In most cases the vehicle is towed to an SGI centre where damage is appraised.

Thoughts on the carbon tax

Alright, so I’m going to tackle a bit of a controversial topic this week. Whether you agree with me or not, this is simply for the sake of discussion: The Carbon Tax. The Federal Government has developed a minimum $10 per tonne tax/levy to be in place by 2018 or it must be met in a capand-trade system. In the latter, Kelly Running the “cap” sets a limit on emissions, Observer Staff which is then lowered over time to cut greenhouse gas emissions, while the “trade” opens a market to buy and sell carbon allowances. The “trade” allows companies that produce more pollutants to purchase allowances.

In Saskatchewan a carbon tax will greatly affect the province’s major industries. The petroleum industry and the agriculture industry in particular will see added strains if a carbon tax goes through, which I’m not sure this juggernaut can be stopped. The petroleum industry is essentially mass carbon release. The agriculture industry relies on heavy equipment, as well as the use of synthetic fertilizer which is made through a process involving natural gas, and there is no real way to avoid these costs.

However, the carbon tax, to the best of my understanding is being forced on provinces, but the provinces are to keep any revenue made through the carbon tax. So, if we can or can’t stop the carbon tax, is it really unmanageable in Saskatchewan?

An article I read the other day focused on the carbon capture and sequestration technologies out at Boundary Damn near Estevan. According to the Leader Post, 400,000 tonnes of CO2 were captured in the past year. Considerable.

So, what if the Saskatchewan Government decided to accept the carbon tax and put more research into sequestration and created more of these carbon capture facilities?

What if Saskatchewan decided to take the taxes collected and give money back in some form to farmers and ranchers that could show they were aiding in sequestering carbon? Having been around speakers who focused on holistic management, that was one of the biggest topics they addressed, that they were actu-

ally taking carbon from the air and with their practices were putting it back into the soil. Surely, a system could be developed where the government put a price on that and paid those farmers an amount from the coiffeurs of the carbon tax.

Additionally, the idea of a cap-and-trade system makes sense to use as the industries that release carbon could work with industries or businesses that wouldn’t be so heavily taxed and find a way to share the costs in a way that would be fair to everyone.

Do I think the carbon tax is a good idea? Yes, I do actually. But I don’t think ours is one that has been particularly thought through, nor do I think the timing is right. Our economy is currently rather poor and exactly what it will look like needs to be addressed; two years I don’t think is enough to fully understand the implications or create a proper system. I think it’s going to be rushed and what it turns out being will be frustrating to everyone involved.

I do believe, however, that if a carbon tax is intro-

duced that money shouldn’t enter the general funds of the government, but should be earmarked to lessening our carbon footprint as a province in whatever form that might take. That way the tax can make itself defunct by our government putting effort into sequestration research and technological advancement on this front.

What of the petroleum industry? Well if we put efforts into sequestration and the petroleum industry works alongside the government on that front it should be able to keep clipping along without much trouble.

So is Brad Wall’s government going to stop the federal initiative, I honestly don’t think so, but I do hope that as soon as they realize the fight is futile that they will put their efforts into making a carbon tax in Saskatchewan into something as useful as possible for the citizens.

In search of peace His name is Ron. His was one of the pictures I clicked on as I spent time searching the Memory Project website, an initiative of Historica Canada to honour veterans. Interviews, digitized artifacts, and pictures are amongst the memorabilia that seeks to record Canada’s involvement in global conflicts, wars and peacekeeping missions.

There are pages and pages of Shelley Luedtke pictures--each one representing the story of another young man or woman who served. After clicking on Ron’s picture I began reading the account he gave of Dieppe.

He spoke of being stationed in Littlehampton on the south coast of England as the city was bombed.

Children were killed. People were trapped. “We immediately went to work and started to dig people out of the rubble,” he remarked. Just days later he found himself on a boat, mounting the raid on Dieppe. His regiment entered a very narrow tunnel-shaped beach where they took fire from the front, rear, left and right. He explained, “So we were in the total enfilade of fire. My regiment put 500 men on the beach, 300 men were killed in less than 20 minutes. And how I

survived, I’ll never know. All I know is that I did.”

With the regiment taking so many casualties the senior officer asked if anybody had a white towel, handkerchief or piece of paper that could be attached to a bayonet so they could surrender. Ron spent the next 33 months as a POW. I can’t imagine the horror of what Ron saw, heard and felt. I can’t imagine the fear of storming a beach under a hail of bullets. I can’t imagine watching your friends to the right and left of you fall. I can’t imagine feeling the only option is surrender. But what is beyond my imagination was very real for these soldiers and that is hard for me to reconcile.

I wear a poppy. I attend services of Remembrance. I read the stories. I give thanks for peace. But shouldn’t there be more?

Historica Canada commissioned a study that found while most Canadians like the individual cenotaphs and memorials in communities across the country, 76% support the idea of a national memorial listing the names of all who died in service. Having a national memorial would be a powerful symbol of the respect and gratitude we have for those who lost their lives. It is also absolutely vital we remember those who came home; because although there is tremendous joy and relief at their homecoming, there is also the need to confront the difficult physical and

profound psychological wounds many brought with them.

Ron made it home. There is a picture of him taken in 2012 but no information about his life after World War II. I I hope the intervening years brought good things to him; that he was surrounded by people who loved him, had a home he was comfortable in and pursued a job he found fulfilling. I hope that’s his story because for many--it just isn’t. A 2015 Canadian study estimated 2,250 formers soldiers are homeless. Advocacy groups believe the real number to be much higher and say the alcoholism, drug addiction and mental health issues faced by returning vets need to receive greater acknowledgement and far more resources if we are going to help them face the battles they engage in once on home soil.

Ron’s story ended with the words, “And it was a camp called Eleffos and we were liberated from there by the British Army.” Liberation. Freedom--at least from being a POW. Into what? We aren’t told, but at least we know his story continued.

My story continues. So does yours. So it’s important we remember. We must remember the sacrifice of those who lost their lives in service and we must stand with the others--hoping that the peace they fought so hard to secure, is the peace they can find when they return home. That’s my outlook.

Remembrance Day thoughts Kelly Running Observer Staff

I’m not sure why, but Remembrance Day resonates with me and it always has. I remember being about seven-years-old, it was Nov. 11, and I was at my granny’s condo. I was sitting there on the white chesterfield - as she would call it – with light blue and pink flowers on it, checking my watch every few minutes to make sure I didn’t miss 11 a.m.

I know we had talked about Remembrance Day at school and I knew my granny had served during World War II, I knew I had a great uncle who had fought and gave his life for the Netherlands during a war, but at seven-years-old I think what really got me was the numbers of people that had served. The number of people that had given their lives, so that I could live mine.

It wouldn’t have been long before that that my grandfather had passed away from cancer and that I had really felt the loss of death. So, to be told that people had fought for their freedom was touching, but being told how many people had given their lives in battle meant there were many people who had experienced a loss and had grieved for their loved family and friends.

So, about 20-years ago, I watched the seconds tick closer to 11 a.m., checking my watch more frequently. And at 11 a.m. I stood up having a moment of silence, I was by myself in the room, but for some reason I simply felt it was important I do it.

There’s a good chance my love of history began developing around that time as well. But as I’ve grown and learned more about our history and the history of the world, I’ve found it even more important to go to a Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11 and take a little bit of time out of my day to give thanks to those that were and are serving our country.

I make sure I find a poppy on the last Friday of October, and I wear it diligently until Remembrance Day: one for my jacket and one for my regular clothing. It’s a small symbol, a tiny action to take, to remember those that have given and give their lives and livelihoods for us.

I also hold off on Christmas decorations until after Remembrance Day, as a personal choice, because I feel like we oftentimes forget about the importance of Remembrance Day when caught up in the speed of life. Every once and awhile we need to slow down and just breathe, to just take a moment and say thank you before moving straight from Hallowe’en into Christmas. But, that’s just my personal choice, there’s nothing wrong with setting up a Christmas tree earlier. We live in a free country after all. :)

This past September, I was walking along a bustling Banff Avenue, filled with tourists and townspeople, all enjoying a long weekend that marked the official end of summer, while looking up at the stunning sight of the Rocky Mountains in the near distance.

It was actually there in a churchyard, right in the heart of this crowded resort thoroughfare, where I saw a plaque that read: “They will never know the beauty of this place, see the seasons change, enjoy nature’s chorus.

All we enjoy we owe to them, men and women who lie buried in the earth of foreign lands and in the seven seas.

Dedicated to the memory of Canadians who died overseas in the service of their country and so preserved in our heritage.”

As I looked around at people enjoying that place and that day, the meaning of Remembrance Day resonated with me personally, where and when I least expected it.

That weekend, I was at home in Canada-in one of our beautiful, peaceful national parks, no less. I was travelling with my daughters-who grew up in a country where they are deemed equal under the law to any of their fellow citizens. We enjoy freedom of movement and other freedoms, too. These are privileges we all grew up with and therefore, like many people, I probably, unwittingly take them for granted.

That’s why I think the little plaque in Banff

resonated with me. I try hard not to do so, but all of us are probably guilty of taking our privileges for granted, because we’ve been blessed to have always had lives-and a country- that was underpinned by the idea of a free, equal and ultimately, democratic society.

But like anything, you get what you pay for and my freedom-and that of my daughters- didn’t come cheap. In fact, the price was-and continues to be- pretty high. Throughout the conflicts in which Canadians have been called to serve, the numbers of casualities and injuries is almost too overwhelming to contemplate.

In both World Wars, Canada’s contribution was much greater than our status as a young country with a relatively small population would dictate.

Therefore this country’s losses were disproportionately large, leaving gaping holes in entire communities.

In more recent conflicts and in peacekeeping missions, losses of life may be fewer from a statistical point of view, but people aren’t statistics and the sacrifices of our servicemen and women are still innumerable, unimaginable, and made entirely on our behalf.

Thoughout the entire country-and in this small corner of Saskatchewan-nearly every hamlet, village, First Nation and town has a roll call of names of those who sacrificed their young, precious and irreplaceable lives so that we could, at the very least: “Know the beauty of this place, see the seasons change, enjoy nature’s chorus.”

For that-at the very least-we must remember them.

SHSAA volleyball conferences and regionals Kelly Running Observer Staff

Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association (SHSAA) Girls Conferences were hosted on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Local schools competing in the 1A division from The Observer’s coverage area included Manor, Maryfield, and Bellegarde. Manor has advanced to Regionals to be held this weekend in Lemburg.

Arcola hosted 2A Conferences in the area where they were narrowly beat out by advancing teams of Whitebear and Chief Kahkewistahaw. Also attending these conferences were Wawota, Whitewood, and Redvers.

In the 3A division Oxbow, Lampman, Carlyle, Carnduff, and Radville faced off against each other in Oxbow. Oxbow and Lampman will be moving on to Regionals from this pool.

Boys Conferences will be held this weekend, as with Girls Regionals. Boys 3A Conferences will be hosted in Oxbow with the host team, Carnduff, and Redvers attending.

Bantam Cougars have busy October Marissa Logue Sports Contributor The Bantam Cougars have started their 20162017 season off with a busy October. The season started with some clinics the players could attend.

There was a skills and drills clinic that ran October 3-7, shooting and scoring clinic on October 13th, and a checking clinic on October 22nd. Practices started on October 20th.

The team attended an exhibition game on October 27th in Arcola that they lost 8-2.

Their first league game was the following Saturday, November 5th, on their home ice. They faced off against the Estevan Bears, but weren’t able to pull of a win for this game either with a final score of 5-1. Our one and only goal was scored in the 3rd period by Tyler Colpitts and assisted by Bryce Gibson.

Our week will have us practicing on Tuesday and Thursday and facing off against Arcola on

November 12th.

Atom Cougars look forward to the new season Danielle Benjamin Sports Contributor Welcome to another great year of Carlyle Atom Cougar hockey for the 2016-2017 season. Our team will be coached this year by Kirk Himmelspach (Coach), Ashley Miller (Assistant Coach), Jeff Humphries (Assistant Coach), and managed by Jared Riddell. We have a roster of 13 kids this year who will play with all they have a also have a ton of fun.

We started out the year with the Arcola Conditioning Camp Tournament which was held in Arcola on Oct, 15 and 16, where we played 5 games against surrounding towns/cities. We won 4 out of the 5 games and played very well! It was a great tournament and we all had a lot of fun!

Our first league game was on Oct. 30 in Redvers against Redvers 1 at 1 p.m. We played hard

and fell short by 1 point. The final score was 7-6 for Redvers. Next game action was on Sunday, 6 Nov 2016, when we faced off against Lampman in Lampman at 3 p.m. Our team played well and passed a lot and we ended the game with a hefty score of 16-0 for us.

Next Atom action will be this Saturday, Nov. 12, at 3 p.m. when we face off against Oxbow 2 on home ice at the Carlyle Sports Arena.

Everyone is welcome to come and watch our Atom team this year. We practice on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 5 pm at the Carlyle Sports Arena, and our game schedule is on the website at www. carlyleminorhockey.com as well as will be posted in this article each week. Come on down and watch some great hockey, eat yummy rink food, and try your luck at winning a 50-50 pot of money! See you at the rink!

Novice Cougars back for another season Danielle Benjamin Sports Contributor Welcome back to the 2016-2017 Carlyle Novice Cougars season. I’m sure it will be a great season with the players, coaches, and parents having a lot of fun. Our large team this year will be coached by Steve Kostal (Coach), Kristi Macdonald (Assistant Coach), Danny Kachur (Assistant Coach), Brett Standingready (Assistant Coach), and managed by Natalie Miller. We have a full roster this year with 17 players. Some have been playing for a few years and others are new this year! It is great that there is so much interest in hockey in Carlyle!

We have been at the rink enjoying practices and getting prepared for the season. Our team practices on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. and Thursdays at 5 p.m. We had our first game on Nov. 5 at 11 a.m. at the Carlyle Sports Arena. We faced off against Oxbow 1 and finished the game with a score of 13-9 for Oxbow. Our next game is set for Saturday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m, in Bienfait.

Everyone is welcome to come on down to the CSA for some hockey action and delicious rink food, as well as a chance to win the 50-50 jackpot.

Ethan Anderson and Delan Robertson were given special recognition at the Carlyle Chamber of Commerce Awards Night. The young men were awarded the Young Entrepreneur Award. “These young men will do whatever work it is that you need done, and they will do it to the best of their ability, taking pride in their work,” Nicole Currie explained.

The Growth and Expansion Award – an award to congratulate a business that has made significant changes which has created more employment and investment opportunities in the area. Nominees were Canadian Energy Services and Home Hardware. The winner was Canadian Energy Services, here Mike Lothian accepts the award on behalf of Jason Waugh, from Nicole Currie.

Finally the Business of the Year – awarded to the business that demonstrates exceptional performance in the execution of a successful marketing strategy. They work to make an impact on the greater business community and show great pride and support for our local community. This business has adapted and/or improved their products and service to keep pace with the times and needs of its clients. They are successful, involved in the community, and provide exceptional service. Nominated were King’s Department Store and Canadian Energy Services. The New Venture Award was presented to a business that has been in operation for three years or less. They exemplify the concept of corporate social responsibility and/or mentoring at the grassroots level, having worked to make an impact in the greater business community. Honourable mentions were given to the Carlyle Bakery, Pearl Boutique, and Carlyle Motor Products.

Nicole Currie owner of The Pearl Boutique accepts the Community Involvement Award from Steve Schultz. This award was to recognize a business person who is active in supporting arts and culture, sports, education, healthcare and voluntary groups. They maintain a strong business image and set an example for commitment to public service.

Although Currie was the winner, two honourable mentions included Ron and Lois Paul, and Canadian Energy Services.

Drought ends as Cubs win a classic

As if seven games in a seven-game series didn’t extend the anxiety …

As if an extra innings weren’t needed to settle the issue…

As if a rain delay prior to the start of the 10th inning didn’t make the situation even more tense.

But in the end — Cubs win! Cubs win!

Cubs win!

One of the best stories in all of professional sports — the inability of the woeful Chicago Cubs to win the World series — now has a new twist because the Cubbies confounded the baseball world by beating Cleveland four games to three with a nail-biting 8-7 10-inning victory on Nov. 2.

Reggie Jackson might be Mr. October, but the Cubs are Team November. Winless as far as world championships go for 108 years, but undefeated in November.

“I had the wildest dream last night,” tweeted Sports Illustrated columnist Steve Rushin on the morning after.

“No work in Chicago today — a city-wide sick day,” somebody else tweeted.

This year’s version of the Cubs also overcame the powerful SI Cover curse — the starting roster was shown

on a pre-Series cover in 1908-style packaging — and the Curse of the Billy Goat is also history.

Now, manager Joe Maddon and his Cubs can concentrate on 2017 and the beginning of a World Series dynasty.

It could happen. Team president Theo Epstein, the man who was the architect of the Boston Red Sox team that ended its 86-year futility with a World Series victory in 2004, moved to the Cubs in 2011 and resurrected the Windy City franchise, too. If that doesn’t earn him a plaque in Cooperstown, nothing will. Epstein and his staff need some bullpen help, perhaps another starting pitcher, but the pieces are in place around which a dynasty could be built — pitcher Jake Arrieta, slugging infielders Kris

Bryant and Anthony Rizzo, young shortstop Addison Russell, hot-hitting outfielder Kyle Schwarber are five planks in a powerful foundation.

Meanwhile, fans of the Cleveland Indians, who were tantalizingly close to winning their first World Series since 1948, will have to wait at least one more year.

Leading the series 3-1 and going back to Cleveland for Game 6 and, if necessary, Game 7, most of the baseball world thought it was inevitable that manager Terry Francona’s team would extend the Cubs’ misery to 109 years.

But, miracles happen.

The Cubs are World Champions. Sounds funny to say, but it’s true.

QUESTION 1:

Kenojuak Ashevak helped define modern Inuit art, both in Canada and on the global art scene. While remembered primarily as a graphic artist, she also made stone-cut prints, etchings and soapstone carvings. Among her most recognized work is Enchanted Owl, a print that was reproduced on a Canadian postage stamp in the 1970s to commemorate the centennial of the Northwest Territories.

Born in 1927, Kenojuak took her first breaths in an igloo within an Inuit camp off the southern coast of Baffin Island.

The tribe she was part of was semi-nomadic and she grew up moving between a number of camps in the area. At the age of 19 she was married to a man named Jonniebo, with whom she had children and eventually put down roots in Cape Dorset.

In the 1950s, during a three-year stay at a Quebec hospital (where she was treated for tuberculosis) Kenojuak met an art teacher and subsequently began crafting. She made beadwork and leather dolls during her hospitalization, but it was only upon her return to Cape Dorset that she took up drawing. Her early creations caught the attention of artist James Houston, Inuit graphic artist and sculptor Kenojuak Ashevak, who encouraged Kenojuak—and others in the community— West Baffin Cooperative. A graphic Library and Archives Canada / PA-140556 arts workshop and cooperative was opened in the area and became a means for members of the community—including Kenojuak—to supplement their income.

Kenojuak created thousands of pieces during her lifetime and—almost from the get-go—received high praise for her efforts. Her colourful, imaginative depictions of animals and fanciful northern landscapes constitute some of the most emblematic examples of modern Canadian art. Her work has been widely shown over the years, from a 30-year retrospective of her career at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection Gallery in 1986 to the 2011 exhibition “Truly Canadian”: Inuit Art and National Identity at the Carleton University Art Gallery. Her talent has been commissioned for various projects, including multiple Canadian coins and stamps, a stained glass window at the John Bell Chapel in Oakville, Ontario, and a mural featured at the 1970 World’s Fair in Osaka, Japan.

Kenojuak received countless awards—including the Governor General’s Award for Artistic Achievement in Visual and Media Arts in 2008 and the Order of Canada Companion in 1982—and widespread recognition for her artistic contributions. She passed away in 2013, but her pioneering work remains a lasting legacy of her talent and vision.

CANADA’S KOREAN COMMUNITY One of Canada’s largest trading partners is also one of the country’s primary sources of immigrants. As of the 2011 National Household Survey, 161,131 Canadians identified themselves as having Korean roots. While a first wave of Koreans came to Canada shortly after the Second World War, it was only after 1965 that their numbers became substantial.

Korean-Canadians contribute to our nation’s rich offerings in every sector including the arts, academia, and athletics. Actress Sandra Oh, News anchor and producer Mi-Jung Lee, NHL player Jim Paek, pianist Wonny Song and mathematician Rimhak Ree are just a few of the notable Korean-Canadians making significant strides both at home and internationally.

The majority of Korean-Canadians live in Ontario (49 per cent) and British Columbia (35 per cent) with the remaining population scattered through the other provinces. Toronto has the most concentrated population—over 50,000—of Korean-Canadians and the city is home to Canada’s only Korea Town. The district has numerous restaurants, shops and grocery stores that cater to the community.

The Korean-Canadian population supports several newspapers both in Vancouver and in Toronto. Some major universities in Canada offer Korean Studies programs as well as student exchange programs with South Korea.

Our country’s population of Korean-Canadians continues to grow and add diverse richness to our national identity.

Government taking action to combat impaired driving Government is taking action against impaired driving through effective legislation, more tools for law enforcement, and doing more to build awareness.

“Drinking and driving has taken far too many lives in this province and people need to get the message that it is never acceptable, period,” Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Government Insurance Joe Hargrave said. “Our government is committed to reducing the number of lives lost and people injured due to impaired driving.”

Saskatchewan has the highest rate, per capita, of impaired driving fatalities in Canada. In 2015* in Saskatchewan, there were nearly 1,200 impaired driving collisions, killing 53 people and injuring 578 others.

Amendments to The Traffic Safety Act will be introduced this fall to: Add a three-day vehicle seizure for experienced drivers who are charged for the first time with having a blood alcohol content (BAC) over .04; Apply zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol to drivers 21 and under; and Strengthen ignition interlock laws to be the most effective in Canada, by extending mandatory ignition interlock to drivers who register a BAC over .16 or refuse to provide a breath sample (1st offence - two years; 2nd offence - five years; 3rd and subsequent offence - 10 years).

“These amendments build on changes the province made in 2014 to strengthen impaired driving laws,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said. “Once passed, Saskatchewan will join Alberta and British Columbia in having some of the most effective im-

paired driving legislation in Canada. Our government also continues to explore other avenues to bring down the number of impaired driving deaths and injuries in the province, including closer examination of the full B.C. model.”

If approved, changes will take effect January 1, 2017.

“We support these changes,” MADD Canada CEO Andrew Murie said. “MADD is happy to see Saskatchewan strengthening consequences for people who continue to drive impaired. Alberta and B.C. experienced significant decreases in impaired driving fatalities after implementing vehicle seizures for low BAC drivers. We’re confident this measure will also save lives in Saskatchewan.”

Government is also further supporting law enforcement efforts through more tools and funding.

SGI will invest $800,000 in 32 more Automated Licence Plate Readers (ALPRs) to help police catch disqualified drivers. This brings the total to 47 ALPRs, enough to equip all vehicles in the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan pilot.

This pilot dedicates 60 officers to traffic safety enforcement, targeting problematic roadways and intersections in the central and southeast regions of the province, with a focus on impaired driving, distracted driving and speeding.

SGI is also providing $500,000 for law enforcement to increase check stops targeting impaired driving.

“We know that if drivers perceive their risk of being caught impaired as being higher, they’re more likely to change their behaviour,” Hargrave said. “Having police checking drivers is a way to do that. Knowing there will be more po-

lice check stops provides that extra motivation for people to plan a safe and sober ride ahead of time.”

“I have watched this process unfold, and I can say that government was very serious about making sound and impactful change,” active advocate against drinking and driving Allan Kerpan, whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver in 2014 said. “With this game changing legislation, the government can take great credit in knowing they are saving lives in Saskatchewan.”

SGI is also supporting drivers in changing behaviour by raising awareness of impaired driving consequences through multi-media advertising campaigns and social media channels.

Campaigns are underway now and will continue into 2017 and beyond.

To combat distracted driving, and in response to recommendations from law enforcement, government is also strengthening cellphone legislation by changing the offence to “holding, viewing, using or manipulating” a mobile device while driving, instead of the current “using” a mobile device.

“While The Traffic Safety Act is open to strengthen impaired driving consequences, it made sense to make this change to cellphone legislation at the same time,” Hargrave said.

“We need to make it clear to drivers that using a cellphone while driving is not acceptable – the distraction simply isn’t worth the risk.” *2015 data is preliminary and will change as investigations are ongoing and SGI receives additional police and coroner reports. These figures reflect information that is known to SGI as of October 11, 2016.

Visiting with Neil and Gloria McBride recently was Gloria’s mother, Irene Schappert from Vernon, BC. Gloria Edwards has returned after spending several weeks visiting with family. Her son Greg picked her up and they traveled to Winkler and Morden, MB. They attended five hockey games of the Midget AAA League. Gloria’s granddaughter, Bree Edwards is a member of the 2016/2017 Midget AAA Pandas Hockey Team. After the tournament they went home to Edmonton where they attended more hockey games. While there the family celebrated grandson, Hayden’s birthday and Gloria’s birthday.

Sympathy to Ken Lincoln and all family members on the passing of Lillian Lownsbrough of Red Deer, AB. she passed away on Oct. 31 at the age of 88 years.

The community was saddened recently on the passing of Gerry Wyatt. He passed away on Oct. 31 at the age of 64 years. He is survived by his wife Betty and blended family of Bradley, Chad, Amanda, Corey, Trevor and Ryan and their families. His

funeral service was held at Prairie Place, Arcola on Nov. 4. Although he had only lived in Wawota since July many got to know him as he was out going and very personable.

Four hundred and five dollars was realized from the sale of the Halloween stickers sold at the Post Office. This has been sent to UNICEF. These sales save seniors from worrying about answering their doors time after time and for some, the burden of spending a lot of money on treats. For the few people who thought the money should stay in the community, I don’t know of any local children whom are fleeing from wars, don’t have enough to eat, don’t have a home or clothes to wear, don’t have fresh drinking water or the opportunity for education and health care!

The Alida Community extends sincere sympathy to Sherry/Ross Shier and family (Auburnton) on the death of her mother Mavis Spearing, who passed away Oct. 30, 2016 at the Galloway Health Centre, Oxbow. Condolences are also extended to Al Spearing (Oxbow, formally of Auburnton) and to all other members of the Spearing family. Funeral service was held on Nov. 3 at Oxbow United Church.

Kelsey Rydberg (Estevan) visits with her mother Shelly Cowan for a little while every Tuesday evening before offering Yoga classes. Exercise classes are also held weekly Monday and Wednesday morning under the direction of Stephanie (Boutin) Campbell (Redvers). Anyone who is interested is welcome to come and join in the fun with either Kelsey or Stephanie (or both) at the Golden Gate Centre.

(November 4-6) with his parents Gray and Edel, his brother Tim, Shelly and Ainsley as well as with friends in the area.

Visiting with Margaret and Brian Peet for a few days this past week was her mother Claire Germain of Regina. She also attended the Alida Fall Supper on Sunday.

There were a number of Alida people who attended the “Christmas is November” event held at the Redvers Rec. Centre on Nov. 5 – it was very interesting to see all the different booths.

Nov. 6 was the annual fall supper held here in Alida – there was a very good turnout with over 300 attending this event. Everyone seemed to enjoy the delicious food and awesome desserts. Do keep up the great work ladies and hopefully we’ll see everyone again next year.

Canadian rail sector proven inadequate november 11th

By Calvin Daniels Inadequacies in the Canadian rail sector have plagued western grain producers in the last few years.

The situation was most blatant in the fall of 2013, and throughout 2014, where the system proved woefully inadequate in moving a record crop to port position in a timely fashion. Granted it was the largest crop ever recorded in Western Canada when 76.8 million tonnes of all crop types were harvested in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, but production numbers have been higher on a regular basis of late because of acres planted, crop genetics, and a better understanding of nutrient requirements of various crops.

A system might be expected to have occasional issues with moving record crop, but the system basically bottlenecked the system to weeks and weeks, and that impacted farmer delivery and timely sales.

The decision has received support within the farm sector, including SaskBarley Board Chair Jason Skotheim, who noted in a recent release the announcement is a good one for farmers.

The Western Grain Elevator Association (WGEA) also commended the Government of Canada on a big step forward in addressing several longstanding inadequacies with Canada’s rail transportation policy. The announcement by Minister Garneau to introduce reforms in Spring 2017 will go a long way to addressing key problem areas identified by the WGEA. “This is an important day for not only grain shippers but for every grain farmer across the country who relies on dependable and accountable rail service,” said WGEA Executive Director Wade Sobkowich in a release. “We’re thankful that Minister Garneau and Minister MacAulay understand just how fundamental this is to grain farmers and the industry.”

But there is also a feeling more is needed.

In their release SaskBarley also noted a hope to see more action taken in coming months.

In its September submission to the Federal government’s CTA review, SaskBarley put forward several recommendations based on the principles of increased transparency, accountability and competition at all levels within the value chain.

Specifically, SaskBarley has pushed for keeping the Maximum Revenue Entitlement (MRE) in place to protect Saskatchewan farmers.

The situation as it exists may be tested again this winter, as the current crop is another huge one.

It may have set a new record, at least some estimates earlier this season hinted at the possibility, although harvest issues due to rain may lower production somewhat.

It will help that softer oil prices than in 2014, may reduce oil movements by rail, helping free engines and lines for grain movement, but if the cold, snowy winter predicted hits, the system will be tested and the needs for more regulations and control shown yet again.

Christmas Toy Drive kicks off Nov. 12

Carlyle’s The Bargain Shop! will kick off its annual Christmas Toy Drive on Saturday, Nov. 12. Store manager Shannon MacLeod (pictured) says that last year’s toy drive served “Our entire area. We helped families from our immediate area, as well as from Broadview, Oxbow, Maryfield, Ochapowace, White Bear and even Weyburn and Estevan.”

MacLeod says that most children are referred to the program by social service agencies, but adds: “We do get calls saying ‘There’s a family who really needs your help.’ That’s what happened last year, we got an influx of calls on the last weekend.” Cash donations and/or toys can be dropped off at The Bargain Shop! in Carlyle starting on Nov. 12. Canadian war memorials

The history of Canada comprises hundreds of years of armed actions in the territory encompassing modern Canada, and the role of the Canadian military in conflicts and peacekeeping worldwide. Much of this military history of Canada is commemorated today with memorials across the country and around the world. Canadian memorials commemorate the sacrifices made as early as the Seven Years’ War to the modern day War on Terror. As Newfoundland was a British Dominion until joining Confederation in 1949, there are several monuments in Newfoundland and Labrador and abroad which were dedicated to Newfoundland servicemen and women.

There are currently 6,293 war memorials in Canada registered with the National Inventory of Military Memorials, which is under the Canadian Department of Veterans Affairs. There are also war memorials across the world, some of which are operated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, which are dedicated to Canada as well as the Commonwealth members. There currently are 17 in France, six in Belgium, four in the United Kingdom, two in Afghanistan and in South Korea and one each in Egypt, Hong Kong, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. A symbol of remembrance

In the language of flowers, the poppy, stands for consolation, while red is a symbol of passion and love.

Thus, wearing a red poppy on Remembrance Day and the week’s leading up to it, are a way to remember those that have given and continue to give their lives in service to our country.

World War I, although named The Great War, was devastating. Trench warfare meant that very little territorial advancement was made or lost by either side fighting in the war.

The majority of fighting took place in Western Europe, a place which before the war was of lush green grass and a beautiful countryside. The war quickly turned the landscape from a beautiful, serene place to one pockmarked by shells exploding. The land was barren, except for the mud, which had enveloped the no man’s land between the trench lines.

Nothing grew except for the fears of being in a war; a war which looked impossible to resolve. A war, which was supposed to be over quickly turned into four years of brutal battle.

Lest We During the springs of the war the barren land where battles were waged and lives were lost battlefields of Remembering All Who Have Fought For Our Freedom bright red flowers – poppies – began sprouting up. The Flanders poppies (Papaver rhoeas), although delicate, are resilient and grew amongst the devastation. The soil had in fact been enriched with lime by the rubble and bomb debris, which made for good growing conditions.

etery where his friend had been buried. In May 1915, he had lost a friend at Ypres, and as the poppies grew, blooming a brilliant red he was inspired to write, the now famous poem, “In Flanders Fields.” A poem, which became a representation of the sacrifices servicemen and women give.

That poem, which was first published in England’s Punch magazine in December of 1915 inspired an American woman from Georgia, Moina Michael, to wear a poppy year-round in memory of those who lost their lives in the war. She also wrote a reply to “In Flanders Fields” which was called “We Shall Keep the Faith.”

The movement grew and poppies became a symbol of remembrance. In 1921, nine million were ordered by the Royal British Legion, they were all handmade by veterans that year, and were sold on Nov. 11. The next year, following a successful poppy campaign, a poppy factory was established to keep up with demands by Major George Howson. Funds raised were then used to help WW1 veterans with employment and housing.

In Canada the Great War Veteran’s Association, the predecessor of the Royal Canadian Legion, adopted the Poppy as its Flower of Remembrance on July 5, 1921.

Today, in Canada, the Poppy Campaign begins the last Friday in October. It is worn on the left lapel, or simply near the heart. Many people will wear the poppy until the end of the Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11, where they lay their poppy at the base of the cenotaph in their community as a sign of respect.

“I wear a poppy as a way to show my appreciation and thankfulness to those that have offered and continue to offer their lives and livelihoods to serving our country. Because of them I live in a free country; a place where I feel safe. I think about my paternal grandmother who served and had told me a little bit about her time in service and I think about my maternal grandparents who immigrated to Canada from Holland. Why Canada?

The Canadian National Vimy Memorial is a memorial site in France dedicated to the memory of Canadian Expeditionary Force members killed during the First World War. It also serves as the place of commemoration for First World War Canadian soldiers killed or presumed dead in France who have no known grave. The monument is the centrepiece of a 100-hectare (250-acre) preserved battlefield park that encompasses a portion of the ground over which the Canadian Corps made their assault during the initial Battle of Vimy Ridge offensive of the Battle of Arras.

The Battle of Vimy Ridge was the first occasion on which all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force participated in a battle as a cohesive formation, and it became a Canadian national symbol of achievement and sacrifice. France ceded to Canada perpetual use of a portion of land on Vimy Ridge on the understanding that Canada use the land to establish a battlefield park and memorial. Wartime tunnels, trenches, craters, and unexploded munitions still honeycomb the grounds of the site, which remains largely closed off for reasons of public safety. Along with preserved trench lines, several other memorials and cemeteries are contained within the park.

The memorial took designer Walter Seymour Allward 11 years to see built. King Edward VIII unveiled it on 26 July 1936 in the presence of French President Albert Lebrun and more than 50,000 Canadian and French veterans and their families. Following an extensive multi-year restoration, Queen Elizabeth II re-dedicated the monument on 9 April 2007 at a ceremony commemorating the 90th anniversary of the battle. The site is maintained by Veterans Affairs Canada. This Vimy Memorial and the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial are the only two National Historic Sites of Canada outside of Canada. November 2016 – People often can’t help but smile when they see six-yearold Kamryn Bond lay a wreath with her friend, Shannon Krasowski, 40, at their local Remembrance Day ceremony.

Although an unlikely pair, they are both amputees and are part of a legacy that goes back nearly 100 years.

Kamryn is a member, and Shannon a graduate, of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program. It was war amputee veterans who created The War Amps in 1918, its Key Tag Service in 1946, and later, the CHAMP Program. Since 1975, thousands of child amputees across Canada have received financial assistance for their artificial limbs through CHAMP and attended regional seminars where they learn about growing up as an amputee.

When Kamryn was 11 months old, both of her legs, right hand, and several fingers on her left hand, were amputated due to a respiratory illness.

Shannon’s left leg was amputated when she was 13 years old due to bone cancer.

They met three years ago at their local Kamryn and Shannon laying a wreath on behalf Remembrance Day ceremony. That year, Kamryn of The War Amps. watched Shannon lay a wreath on behalf of The War Amps Operation Legacy, but ever since, it has been a tradition they share.

While growing up as a Champ, Shannon met many war amputee veterans and heard their firsthand accounts of the devastation of war. “They passed this legacy to us younger amputees and now it’s our turn to share their stories, so that we never forget their sacrifices,” Original camp at Shilo, Manitoba, World War II. she says.

The Cenotaph, in Regina, Saskatchewan, was built in honour Regina’s fallen heroes of World War I. The cenotaph replaced the fountain that honoured Nicholas Flood Davin, which had stood in Victoria Park since 1908. The Cenotaph was unveiled on November 11, 1926.

SP MLAs block disclosure

By Murray Mandryk Last week’s federal election may finally bring an end to Canadians looking down their noses at the massive flaws of American’s electoral system.

In fairness, there are big problems with a disengaged US electorate.

What this year’s America’s presidential race clearly demonstrated is many U.S. voters live in an echo chamber where nonsense is repeated by partisan media commentators and on social media echo chamber until it’s accepted as fact.

No doubt, this is the very thing that’s nurtured the irrationality in U.S. politics where common sense has followed honesty and truth out the window.

But while one might easily point out the problem in America caused by partisan blinders, consider what’s going on in our very own backyard as it relates to Regina’s Global Transportation Hub (GTH) land deal.

The very day of the U.S. election, Saskatchewan Party government MLAs were voting to refuse to bring before the legislature the people behind the decisions that led us to pay $103,000 an acre for 204 acres valued at $10,000- to $15,000 an acre a year earlier.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Those who you elected, many of them rural MLAs, made it their job at the legislature to ensure that you have less information and government accountability than you would have otherwise had.

Like Donald Trump, many of these elected Saskatchewan people like to claim they are not politicians … or at least, not career politicians.

But regardless of political stripe, it’s rather amazing how quickly non-politicians adapt to acting in the political interests of themselves and their party.

The NDP Opposition wanted to bring before the legislative committee three former chief executive officers of the GTH and deputy ministers who were all involved in the land deal.

Instead, Sask. Party government public accounts committee members Glen Hart, Larry Doke,

Warren Michelson, Jennifer Campeau, Herb Cox and Randy Weekes used their majority to ensure the only ones coming before the committee would be new GTH CEO Doug Moen (hired long after the mess) and the current Highways Ministry (who had no role in the land purchase).

This is more than wrong. It was a blatant attempt by the Sask. Party to use its majority to conceal any potential embarrassing information.

Admittedly, digging up embarrassing information was what the NDP was clearly hoping to accomplish by demanding these individuals be brought forward and forced to testify before the legislative committee.

Some might argue that Sask. Party and NDP committee members were both playing games. To some degree, this is true.

But the huge difference here is the opposition was trying to get the bottom of this mess and the government members were clearly trying to stop anyone from getting there.

And less there be any doubt that this remains a mess, consider what Provincial Auditor Judy Ferguson stated in her June report.

Ferguson said the land was bought “at significantly higher price and not in a fiscally responsible manner” because of a “unique board governance (that included) the active involvement of the GTH/ chair (who happened to be former economy minister Bill Boyd).

From there, we have since learned that Boyd take to cabinet a proposal to sell the land that had to be rejected because the owner of the land was not known.

Finally, SaskPower in December 2013 (a time when Boyd was minister) spent $25 million to buy other GTH land, a huge convenience, because the GTH didn’t otherwise have the money to buy the 204 acres. Boyd assigned his chief political aide to negotiate the $103,000-an-acre deal, negotiates the GTH didn’t even know about.

In sure sounds like there still are questions to be asked.

But like in the U.S. some voters may choosing to see only what they want to see.

Minutes, days and hours

By Linda Wegner Earlier this week our six year old granddaughter announced that she had counted up to 100 all by herself,” and I’m not sure who was more proud: she, her parents or I. In any case her pronouncement reminded me of the significance of numbers and, consequently, of time.

In my musings on her observation I realized that each day I have the opportunity to utilize 1,440 minutes. I’ve also got seven days this and every week. Each of these minutes, days and weeks add up to nearly 8,800 hours in a year. Somehow that seems a lot more significant that simply checking my watch every once in a while.

It was interesting, then, that our pastor’s sermon this morning dealt with the matter of the uncertainty of “tomorrow”. We can make all sorts of plans concerning our financial, social and family futures but the working out of those strategies is

often beyond our control. On the lighter (or duller) side of things, we West Coast dwellers can probably expect rain and wind for the next ten days based on meteorologists’ forecasts.

In all my ramblings, I’m going somewhere with this. We can’t control the weather, and even if we could, individual preferences and priorities would result in as mixed a bag as we already have. So it is in life; good things happen, so do bad things but in all that, we still are responsible to choose our attitude.

Each day is an opportunity to truly live. Sobering but exciting stuff. My today, tomorrow and every day’s prayer is that I would fill those minutes, days and weeks with the things that really count. “…Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that’” (James 4:13-17) PS: Granddaughter would be proud of my ability to calculate such numbers.

Flu shots are for sissies

A spunky, elderly neighbour of mine told me a few years ago, “You guys spend so much time trying to sell your darn flu shots. Flu shots are for sissies. I’ve never been sick a day in my life and I don’t need one!”

I went to his wife’s funeral that same year, just before Christmas. Her doctor believes she got the flu from her husband. He wasn’t really sick; just a bit of a head cold and an upset stomach for a day or so. She was in a higher risk category. The virus can be spread a full day before a person feels sick.

There are three types of influenza viruses, called influenza A, influenza B and influenza C. Influenza A and B are associated with seasonal influenza and the cause of most outbreaks and epidemics of influenza. Influenza C is relatively rare and does not usually cause epidemics or outbreaks. Influenza B and C are human pathogens.

Influenza A can infect humans as well as birds, pigs and other animals.

Influenza A causes a more severe illness than influenza B, often resulting in hospitalization and sometimes death in the elderly and others at risk, such as people with chronic disease. World epidemics and pandemics, like H1N1 a few years ago, have been due to influenza A. Influenza is spread from person to person through droplets (e.g. saliva, sneezing) and by touching objects and surfaces that are contaminated with the virus (e.g. doorknobs, telephone receivers). The influenza virus may persist for hours in dried mucus and be transmitted by direct contact. It is spread very easily indoors, which is why it is so prevalent in the winter months in northern countries, when people like us spend more time together inside.

The flu vaccine is the first line of protection. The second, to be used in conjunction with immunization, is good hand hygiene practices, like hand washing with soap or use of an alcohol-based hand rub, especially after contact with the eyes, mouth, nose or secretions.

Always avoid handling soiled tissues or objects used by an ill person and cough or sneeze into your elbow.

Lastly, stay at home when you’re sick, although that may not have helped my neighbour’s wife because it just threw two sickly people together without protection from each other.

So get your flu shot. It is readily available at flu clinics throughout the Region, your community pharmacist, your family doctor or nurse practitioner.

Three tips for booking with a travel agent Last year, a Kindersley travel agency went out of business. The closure affected a wedding party and caused many people to miss out on the trips they planned. Many of the customers placed deposits worth thousands of dollars in cheque, cash and credit to the agency to reserve their spots. he Consumer Protection Division of the Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) was able to help some consumers get their money back but others were not so lucky.

Consumers should take three steps to protect themselves in the event something goes wrong with their travel agency: 1. Pay with a credit card. It is easier for consumers to get a refund through their credit card provider.

2. Minimize or avoid cash or cheque deposits.

It may be more difficult or impossible to get a refund if something goes wrong.

3. Do some research, read customer reviews,

check with the Better Business Bureau and the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies, and confirm that the agency is well established and has a good reputation within the community.

Minister Tina Beaudry-Mellor said. “Adoptees, their adoptive families and their birth families have been asking for this, and that’s why we have taken steps to improve access to birth registration information for those individuals.”

Birth registrations contain information such as the name of listed birth parents, the name of the child at birth and the location of the birth, along with name of the hospital. The regulatory changes replace the requirement to obtain consent with the option for birth parents and adult adoptees to file a veto or a contact preference. With almost 37,000 adoptions having occurred in Saskatchewan since 1922, this change may impact many individuals.

“Six out of 10 individuals will be connected by adoption in some way during their lifetime,” Adoption Support Centre of Saskatchewan Interim Executive Director Sylvia Cholodnuik said. “This month serves as a reminder of how many individuals have a personal connection to adoption and the many ways our organization is here to help.”

The Adoption Support Centre of Saskatchewan has organized a variety of exciting events across the province to celebrate Adoption Awareness Month.

The organization began in the 1980s as a group of adoptive parents providing support to one another.

It has since grown into a province-wide confidential information service that provides referrals, resources and pre- and post-adoption support relating to domestic, international, private, step-parent and adult adoptions.

Government taking action to combat impaired driving Government is taking action against impaired driving through effective legislation, more tools for law enforcement, and doing more to build awareness.

“Drinking and driving has taken far too many lives in this province and people need to get the message that it is never acceptable, period,” Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Government Insurance Joe Hargrave said. “Our government is committed to reducing the number of lives lost and people injured due to impaired driving.”

Saskatchewan has the highest rate, per capita, of impaired driving fatalities in Canada. In 2015* in Saskatchewan, there were nearly 1,200 impaired driving collisions, killing 53 people and injuring 578 others.

Amendments to The Traffic Safety Act will be introduced this fall to: • Add a three-day vehicle seizure for experienced drivers who are charged for the first time with having a blood alcohol content (BAC) over .04; • Apply zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol to drivers 21 and under; and • Strengthen ignition interlock laws to be the most effective in Canada, by extending mandatory ignition interlock to drivers who register a BAC over .16 or refuse to provide a breath sample (1st offence - two years; 2nd offence - five years; 3rd and subsequent offence - 10 years).

“These amendments build on changes the province made in 2014 to strengthen impaired driving laws,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said. “Once passed, Saskatchewan will join Alberta and British Columbia in having some

of the most effective impaired driving legislation in Canada. Our government also continues to explore other avenues to bring down the number of impaired driving deaths and injuries in the province, including closer examination of the full B.C. model.”

If approved, changes will take effect January 1, 2017.

“We support these changes,” MADD Canada CEO Andrew Murie said. “MADD is happy to see Saskatchewan strengthening consequences for people who continue to drive impaired. Alberta and B.C. experienced significant decreases in impaired driving fatalities after implementing vehicle seizures for low BAC drivers. We’re confident this measure will also save lives in Saskatchewan.”

Government is also further supporting law enforcement efforts through more tools and funding.

SGI will invest $800,000 in 32 more Automated Licence Plate Readers (ALPRs) to help police catch disqualified drivers. This brings the total to 47 ALPRs, enough to equip all vehicles in the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan pilot. This pilot dedicates 60 officers to traffic safety enforcement, targeting problematic roadways and intersections in the central and southeast regions of the province, with a focus on impaired driving, distracted driving and speeding.

SGI is also providing $500,000 for law enforcement to increase check stops targeting impaired driving.

“We know that if drivers perceive their risk of being caught impaired as being higher, they’re more likely to change their behaviour,” Hargrave said. “Having police checking drivers is a way to

do that. Knowing there will be more police check stops provides that extra motivation for people to plan a safe and sober ride ahead of time.”

“I have watched this process unfold, and I can say that government was very serious about making sound and impactful change,” active advocate against drinking and driving Allan Kerpan, whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver in 2014 said.

“With this game changing legislation, the government can take great credit in knowing they are saving lives in Saskatchewan.”

SGI is also supporting drivers in changing behaviour by raising awareness of impaired driving consequences through multi-media advertising campaigns and social media channels. Campaigns are underway now and will continue into 2017 and beyond.

To combat distracted driving, and in response to recommendations from law enforcement, government is also strengthening cellphone legislation by changing the offence to “holding, viewing, using or manipulating” a mobile device while driving, instead of the current “using” a mobile device.

“While The Traffic Safety Act is open to strengthen impaired driving consequences, it made sense to make this change to cellphone legislation at the same time,” Hargrave said. “We need to make it clear to drivers that using a cellphone while driving is not acceptable – the distraction simply isn’t worth the risk.” *2015 data is preliminary and will change as investigations are ongoing and SGI receives additional police and coroner reports. These figures reflect information that is known to SGI as of October 11, 2016.

Gerry Wyatt, passed away after a brief illness on October 31, 2016 in Regina General Hospital with his loving wife, children, sister and brother by his side.

Born December 30, 1951 to Jean and Harold Wyatt of Kisbey, Gerry farmed for 38 years south of Kisbey supplementing the farm by working as an oilfield contractor for 29 years. He developed the Black Harvest Bull test feedlot and later tested the Sun Country Shorthorn bulls, building a sale barn, where many ranchers sold their purebred cattle through.

In 2010 Gerry and Betty sold the farm and retired to a home at White Bear Lake Resort where they resided until July of this year.

They then sold the lake house and moved to Wawota where they developed their dream home.

Gerry’s love of farming, the oil industry and retirement was surpassed only by the love of his blended family, Bradly and Chad Wyatt, Amanda (Wyatt) Klatt, Corey, Trevor and Ryan Branvold and their spouses Lorelie and Bethany Wyatt, Jesse Verbin, Danielle and Cheryl Branvold and Joline Bergen, 17 grandchildren and his loving wife Betty (McKenzie) Wyatt.

Predeceased by his parents Harold and Jean Wyatt he leaves to mourn his family as well as brother Doug (Leanne) Wyatt, sister Connie (Bob) Milligan, numerous nephews, nieces and extended Wyatt/McKenzie families, special friends Arlie and Darlene Altwasser, Dean and Eileen Leach, Collin, Michelle and Hillary Sauder, Harold and Elaine Coderre and Bonnie Thompson.

A Service of Remembrance and Celebration was held on Friday, November 4, 2:00pm from the Arcola Prairie Place Hall, Arcola, SK with Rev. Koshy David officiating. Interment was held at the Percy Cemetery, Kisbey, SK with lunch following at the Prairie Place Hall.

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to Arcola Health Centre, 607 Prairie Avenue, Arcola, SK S0C 0G0 or the Hospitals of Regina Foundation, Cardiac Care, 1874 Scarth Street,

Kim Elizabeth Robitaille (nee Lownds) 1950 - 2016 Kim peacefully passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Moose Mountain Lodge, Carlyle, SK at the age of 66 years.

Kim is survived by her 2 brothers, Gordon Lownds and Taylor Lownds and two nieces, Jody and Elizabeth. Kim was predeceased by her parents, Martin and Phyllis Lownds.

Kim graduated from Lawrence Park Collegiate in Toronto and she was voted best cheerleader in Toronto in her senior year. She graduated from Ryerson University where she studied Business Administration. Kim was an entrepreneur and had run two antique furniture restoration businesses in Ontario before moving to Saskatchewan. Kim established her own business doing book keeping for many businesses. She took great pride in doing an excellent job.

She was a superb business person, going above and beyond, for her clients.

Kim loved dogs. Her hobbies were gardening, gourmet cooking, classical music, and was a trained symphony musician (piano). She had a brilliant mind and was a very compassionate friend. She will be deeply missed by her friends, clients, and family.

To celebrate Kim’s life, there was an informal gathering of friends for a Memorial Tea at the Kisbey Recreation Center- 285 Morley Street in Kisbey at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 8, 2016.

In memory of Kim memorial donations may be made to the Moose Mountain R n R Wildlife Rehabilitation Inc. Box 516 Carlyle, Saskatchewan S0C 0R0. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Hall Funeral Services, Redvers.

Bedecs Ready Mix cements donation to Rusty Relics Museum Frank Bedecs (left) of Bedecs Ready-Mix presented Rusty Relics Museum Chairman Ron Paul (right) with a cheque for $3,250 at the museum on Wednesday, Oct. 1 in Carlyle.

Bedecs Ready-Mix covered the entire cost of the museum’s new front concrete entrance-which is now wheelchair-accessible-as well as the cost of landscaping the front entrance. Paul says: “The Rusty Relics Museum would like to thank Frank Bedecs and Bedecs Ready-Mix for this generous contribution to our facility. At a time when obtaining funding is becoming more difficult, people like Bedecs have really stepped up and have also made visiting our museum much easier for a lot of people.”
