Jarred Valentine of Carlyle, seen here (above photo) playing on the Rural Manitoba Football League’s South All-Star team in May of 2017, has been playing for six years and has earned a spot on the Sask Selects 16U Football Team heading to San Antonio this February.

At 16-years-old, Jarred Valentine, son of Kevin and April Valentine, has earned an exciting opportunity to compete in San Antonio, Texas. Jarred’s hard work and perseverance has led to him being chosen for the Southeast Selects 16U Football Team which is based in Moose Jaw. The young man, a multi-sport athlete playing hockey and competing in golf as well, began playing in Grade 6 out of Estevan. When that league ended, Jarred had developed a great passion for the game and a new opportunity to play arose with the Moosomin Generals.

“He played with the Estevan Steelers for two years and when that team folded, we found out there was a league in Moosomin,” April explained. “He’s been there ever since. It’s a really great program that they’ve built up there.”

Jarred added, “We’ve made it to the finals the last two years.”

(This included the opportunity to host the league final in 2017 as well.)

With the Moosomin Generals, Jarred earned the opportunity to play

on the All-Star Team of the Rural South Manitoba Football League.

They competed against North Manitoba in Winnipeg last year in May. Over the past few years, Jarred is thankful for the support of his family and friends, as well as his coaches, which includes Dexter Mondor and Jason Schenn with the Generals.

With the Generals, Jarred plays as a fullback, but after try-outs for the Selects team were held in Moose Jaw, Nov. 18-19, he was asked back the first weekend in December for the coaching staff to see him in a different position.

“They couldn’t decide what position really fit him best,” April explained. “They decided that a D-Lineman was a better fit and offered him a place on the team.

We were told as we were leaving to expect a call within the week as they had others retrying out as well, but that same night he received the call saying he was on the team.”

With football becoming ever more popular, Saskatchewan is sending a 12U, 14U, and 16U team, while Manitoba is sending an 18U team to San Antonio, Texas this February for the week

long round robin tournament.

Jarred is particularly excited for the opportunity in Texas as the football program in the United States is very strong.

“I’m really looking forward to just the level of football,” he explained. “It’s pretty hard hitting.”

Which when his favourite part of the sport is the hard hitting contact, Jarred will do well and rise to the challenge.

“We’re very proud of him,” April stated on behalf of herself and Steve. “It’s a big opportunity. Playing through the Sask Selects teams opens up potential offers to schooling in the future. If someone notices you they follow you. There are always scouts out during their regular season as well.”

“I’m hopeful of being able to work towards schooling with football,” Jarred added.

This opportunity with the Selects offers another level of competition as well as an extra opportunity to be seen by scouts for his future.

It is the sixth year that the Selects have organized teams to attend the tournament and elite football in Saskatchewan has seen a dramatic rise over the years in skills and abilities.

Calendar Girl: Raina Miers pictured in ‘Enchanting Forest’ Lynne Bell

Four-year-old Raina Miers has been one of The Observer’s favourite cover girls, and now, the pre-kindergarten student is a calendar girl - featured as the month of June’s fairy in 2018’s ‘Enchanting Forest’ wall calendar by Regina’s Free Lense Photo Graphic.

The calendar features images of Saskatchewan children with Down Syndrome and plans are underway for a photographic exhibit - tentatively scheduled for Fall 2018 in Regina - featuring images of the children pictured in the ‘Enchanting Forest’ project, which sales of the calendar will help to finance.

Regina photographer Svetlana Tsybizova and her husband, Alfred Zumpano were inspired by kids with Down Syndrome and say both the calendar project and the

exhibit they are planning are dedicated to “shedding stereotypes” and “life without labels.”

Their website www.FreeLensePhoto. com - states: “Through the talent and vibrancy of children with an extra chromosome, we would like to remind everyone that every person is complex and different.”

“For any other calendar, $25 would be a lot, but not this one. It doubles as a daily reminder to believe in yourself and in people you love and helps to raise money for a very beautiful cause.”

The pair contacted the Saskatchewan Down Syndrome Society and Raina’s mom, Kellie Jones says with a smile: “Some of the other parents we knew messaged us and said: ‘Raina has to be in this.’”

“She’s always loved the camera,” adds Jones.

“And even though we couldn’t make it to the initial shoot with all of

the other kids, they held it off for Raina. We went in November to the studio in Regina and it only took an hour.”

“It went really well,” Tsybizova says of her photo projects involving Saskatchewan kids with Down Syndrome: “I believe in the transformative power of art. By taking an idea and turning it into something tangible, art alters our perception of the world and inspires a change.”

“I hope our exhibit will open a little window into the world hidden behind the Down Syndrome label,” she adds.

“I would like more people to see the sincerity, ingenuity and most of all, the remarkable intelligence of the heart these children have.”

No cost games for toddlers

Toddlers love to play games. Don’t feel you have to rush out and buy the newest games and gadgets. Just look for things around your house and try these nocost games: • Obstacle Course: Use blankets, furniture, boxes, pillows and chairs to set up an obstacle course. Show your child where to go. Get down on the floor and do it with them. Climb over pillows, go under tables, behind chairs and up or down stairs. As you go, use words like “over”, “under” “on” and “behind” to describe where

your child is.

• Little Artist: Toddlers love to scribble.

Give your child big pieces of paper to scribble on, such as paper grocery bags. When you give them markers, pencils, crayons, or chalk, make sure they are nontoxic, as they will likely try to put them in their mouth. Draw with your toddler. At first they will probably just scribble, moving their arms in different directions. After a bit of practice, they will gain better control and start to imitate the straight lines, circles, squares and triangles

Weekly RCMP report Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to a variety of calls over the holiday season between Dec. 28 and Jan. 4.

“With it being a new year we would like to request the communities’ assistance in making this a better and safer year for everyone,” Staff Sergeant Darren Simons asks. “Don’t use your cell phone while driving, don’t drink and drive, and make sure you lock your vehicles, homes, garages, and sheds.”

911 calls There were two 911 misdials: one from Redvers and one from

the Carlyle area.

Assistance Members of the Carlyle detachment assisted Regina Police Service regarding a collision.

They also assisted the Fire Department with a fire call. Carlyle RCMP also provided assistance to RCMP from British Columbia concerning a serious file by taking statements.

A child welfare case was attended to.

On a particularly cold night an intoxicated individual left a business walking home. The business called RCMP concerned with the individuals safety; the RCMP had already picked him up and took him home as on extremely cold nights they proactively keep an eye out for people in need.

Four false alarms occurred within the detachment area.

Failure to attend court

An individual failed to comply with an undertaking.

Unwanted visitors Members received a call of an individual who was unlawfully in a residence. No charges were laid.

There was a dispute at a property in the Carlyle area, which police attended, and it was resolved.

An intoxicated individual was at a residence in the Carlyle area and they were not welcome.

No charges were laid.

A person in Redvers was causing problems at a residence. The individual left when RCMP were contacted and police presence was no longer required.

Driving infractions A case regarding driving with undue care and attention is currently under investigation.

There were three impaired driving investi-

gations during this time: in the first no charges were laid, the second patrol was unable to locate the suspicious vehicle, and in the third case the subject was located however police were unable to prove they had been behind the wheel.

A Liquor Act file was dealt with.

Three motor vehicle insurance issues were dealt with.

An intersection related incident occurred.

There was an individual that was stopped for speeding and also given warnings for tint and mud flaps, as well as an inspection notice.

An individual driving with an obstructed licence plate was stopped.

A warning was given to someone who was unable to produce a vehicle inspection ticket.

There was an individual who was given a warning for driving left of the centre line.

An individual reported a driver who shouldn’t be driving for medical reasons. The driver was stopped, however, there were no restrictions on their licence.

An erratic driver file is currently under investigation.

A driver was stopped and found to be failing to comply with licence endorsements or restrictions.

An inspection notice was given to an individual to repair the white licence plate lights on their vehicle.

There was an individual fined $150 for driving without a licence.

Two minor collisions were reported to the Carlyle detachment during this time.

There were an abundance of speeders stopped including three high tickets of $208, $206, and $200.

Simons reminds people to keep care on the roads and to please not rush as a way to ensure everyone’s safety.

He light heartedly adds, “I don’t think the heater will work better at higher speeds.”

Mischief Damage was reported at a residence in Carlyle. It had involved an intoxicated individual, but was determined to be unfounded.

A third party had reported damage to a building. RCMP investigated and determined the report was unfounded.

Property damage reported in the Carlyle area is under investigation.

Hunting There was a report of an individual hunting illegally in the Kisbey area. Patrols were made, but members were unable to locate the hunters.

Cannabis to be sold by private retailers, regulated by SLGA

The Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) will issue approximately 60 cannabis retail permits to private operators in as many as 40 Saskatch-

ewan municipalities and First Nation communities.

“The federal government has established very aggressive timelines for the legalization

of cannabis,” Minister Responsible for SLGA Gene Makowsky said.

“Our government is being diligent to ensure the sale and regulation of cannabis in Saskatch-

ewan strikes a balance between public safety and access for consumers. It’s also important to our government that the 40 municipalities and First Nations selected for retail locations have the opportunity to decide whether they want cannabis retail stores in their community.”

The initial allocation of retail store permits will be in municipalities and First Nations with populations of at least 2,500, with larger communities being allocated additional permits. Eligible First Nations and municipalities will have the option to opt out of having a retail cannabis store in their community if they choose. The final number of retail permits will depend on the number of community leaders that decide to opt out.

Both wholesaling and retailing of cannabis will be conducted by the private sector and regulated by SLGA. Cannabis retailers will be required to establish a standalone storefront operation,

with the option to also operate an online store.

Stores will be limited to selling cannabis, cannabis accessories and ancillary items. Stores must also have the ability to track and report cannabis inventory to help ensure consumers only have access to safe, legal product from regulated wholesalers.

An independent third party will be engaged to assist SLGA with selecting retail operators using a twophase process.

The first phase will be initial screening for financial capacity and the ability

Phase two will be a random selection (lottery) of the qualified applicants. Successful proponents will be required to meet ‘good character’ criteria as part of the permitting process.

Specific details regarding application criteria, permit licensing fees, application timelines and other associated details will be finalized over the coming weeks. A decision on the minimum age for cannabis consumption will be made later this spring.

Carlyle Town Council holds first meeting of 2018 Lynne Bell

Carlyle Town Council held their first meeting of the new year Wednesday, Jan. 3 at the Carlyle Civic Centre. Council’s next meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17 at the Civic Centre.

SUMA Convention The Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) will hold its 2018 convention Feb. 5 to 7 in Regina. Mayor Wayne Orsted, Town of Carlyle Administrator Natalie Miller and councillors John Brownlee, Devin Faber, Brian Romaniuk and Jenn Sedor will attend.

Annual Audit Cogent Chartered Professional Accountants LLP of Weyburn will conduct the Town of Carlyle’s independent financial audit on Feb. 20 and 21.

2018 Meetings Carlyle Town Council will hold regularly-scheduled meetings at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Carlyle Civic Centre. Risk Management is more than watching the weather Brenda Stefanson, PAg Regional Farm Business Management Specialist Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, Watrous After weeks of above seasonal temperatures, we were slammed with a cold snap during the holidays.

Many of us had to change plans because of the dangerous cold and the havoc it wreaks on our vehicles, equipment and animals. We are used to cold weather on the prairies. It is the sudden temperature fluctuations that are causing concern for plants, livestock and infrastructure.

The calendar has flipped to a new year and planning for the next growing season is back on the front burner. Weather is top of mind in our risk assessment after last year’s drought and previous years’ excess moisture. However, there are many other risk factors to keep in mind.

Farmers make decisions every day. However, they don’t always have accurate information, nor can they predict the outcome with 100 per cent accuracy. The uncertainty about the outcome of our decisions is known as risk.

Risk exists in all aspects of farming. Farmers will face production, marketing, financial, legal, environmental, and safety risks. Risk can be mitigated by having a risk management strategy. As part of your risk management strategy, you need to identify and understand the risks facing your operation. In addition, it is helpful to determine your risk tolerance and the impact this has on your risk management strategy.

Risk tolerance is your willingness to accept risk.

Farm managers make better decisions when they recognize their attitudes towards risk. There are three broad categories of risk tolerance – risk averse, risk neutral and risk taker.

Risk averse individuals are very cautious and are more likely to choose a risk avoidance strategy. These individuals may be willing to pay extra for the security of knowing a risk has been removed or minimized. Risk takers thrive on risk. They are excited by a challenge and may seek out risky ventures as long as there is the potential of a positive outcome. Between the two extremes are risk neutral individuals who recognize and carefully analyze the degree of risk in a situation before taking action.

Wheat losing its popularity

By Calvin Daniels Hailing from a region of Canada long-known as ‘the Breadbasket of the World’ because of the wheat grown here on the Prairies, as a farm writer I have been rather keenly aware of the importance of wheat.

The region was basically developed to grow the crop, and the export of high quality wheat has been an integral part of the region’s economy from the time of the earliest settlers.

But, in recent time’s wheat, which predominantly becomes flour, with a key product of that flour being white bread, the crop has lost some of its shine in terms of consumer interest. Certainly wheat flour remains important, and bread and related products are part of most of our diets, but it is not always seen by consumers as the healthiest option today.

In part because of the health concerns wheat, which once dominated farm crop rotations in western Canada has seen a decline, with canola, a crop noted for producing healthy oil, taking over as the key crop.

But farmers here can’t just abandon wheat either. The region is ideally suited to its production, and farmers here are also expert at its production.

That combination makes it a crop well-suited to being produced in a way that means a reasonable return on crop inputs investment.

Research may hold the key to at the very least allowing wheat to maintain its current acres in terms of overall cropping, and it could push the crop back to the top of the heap in terms of importance as well.

There is little doubt moving forward agriculture will see new varieties of a variety of crops offering new properties that did not exist at viable levels to be useful. The new properties, whether achieved through traditional plant breeding methodologies, or by genetic modification, are going to push many crops into new and exciting niche markets.

Take for example a new type of wheat being grown in the Idaho, Washington state and Oregon in 2017. According to a recent article at www.producer. com, “the wheat is high in amylose, a type of dietary fibre that benefits digestive health and helps ward off Type 2 diabetes.

“Flour from the wheat is being marketed in North America as HealthSense.

“Australian scientists, in collaboration with French researchers, have been working on the high fibre wheat since 2006. They formed a company called Arista Cereal Technologies to commercialize the wheat and its unique health traits. Bay State Milling has the licence to sell the wheat and flour in North America.

“The Australian and French team of scientists boosted the fibre content by controlling two enzymes within wheat (using a conventional breeding approach).”

Whether the new wheat emerges as a major development is not the key here, but rather that its development of something new for a very old crop to open new markets based on current consumer demands.

October 1st was our registration meeting at the school in Arcola. This year our club members are Emma Lees as secretary, Kyla Lees as the reporter, Becca Lees, Lane Newell is the Vice President, and Ethan Newell is treasurer, Christin Dixon, Kylee Dixon is our club president, Kayla McLaren, Tyson McLaren, and Briana McLaren. Our leader is Jeff Lees. Assistant leaders are Corey Lees, Garth Newell and Lyle McLaren.

Our club is still doing the bottle recycling at businesses around Arcola and Carlyle.

November 4th was our second meeting of the

year. We had our Christmas party at the bowling alley in Weyburn on Dec. 3. We bowled then had pizza for supper. We also did a gift exchange that day. We then had a little meeting after our supper. On Dec. 9 we cleaned up after the JJ Christmas party as a fundraiser for our club. Our next meeting was Jan. 7.

We discussed speech day. They will be held Feb. 4 at Arcola School in the art room at 2p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend! We will weigh our steers in Jan. 20 at Troy Gordon’s farm.

911 tips for the New Year If you unwrapped a new smart phone recently on Christmas Day, Sask911 reminds you to do your part to protect the integrity of the 911 system by making sure you understand how your high-tech gift accesses emergency services.

“Smart phones are great tools that make our lives easier, but they also have functions that need to be used properly,” Saskatchewan’s Emergency Management and Fire Safety Commissioner Duane McKay said. “Everyone can do their part to ensure 911 operators and emergency service dispatchers are available to serve those in need.”

For example, iPhones with newer operating systems can have their lock button clicked five times to have the option to swipe SOS. After swiping SOS, the smart phone dials 911. However, this function does not ping your location to Sask911.

“Sask911 has received some calls from people testing the feature, which ties up valuable resources,” McKay said. “We want to be proactive and remind people to please call 911 only when there’s a real emergency. If you do accidently dial 911 for whatever reason, please stay on the line so staff can

verify quickly that there isn’t a real emergency.”

Smart phone users should also ensure their phones are locked when carrying them in a purse, pocket or bag to prevent accidental 911 calls.

From January to November of this year, Sask911 operators took 330,281 calls. Of those, 58 per cent or 190,296 were from a cell phone, and 12 per cent or 40,046 were abandoned – meaning a caller hung up after dialing.

Other tips to help prevent accidental 911 calls: • Manually dialing 911 instead of preprogramming the number in your phone; and • Teaching your children the importance of 911 and when it should and should not be used.

General 911 tips: • When calling, say where you are and identify which emergency services you require, such as police, fire or ambulance.

• Try to remain calm and be able to provide additional information, if requested by an operator.

• Don’t hang up until an operator advises you to do so.

Pause for Reflection

The reality and the dream of ancestry Some family trees have beautiful leaves. Ours has a few nuts. But there is nothing I would change.

Some of my favourite family tree humour includes I think my ancestors had several “bad heir” days. And after I die my face book status should read: Is visiting with ancestors. And: The witness protection program explains why I can’t find some relatives.

In December I was driving up town about dusk when I saw the most beautiful Christmas tree decorations. The tops of the tall spruce trees were glowing in gold. This was something artificial lights could not attempt.

I thanked God for outdoing all the decoration attempts in town. The setting sun somehow broke through the cloudy afternoon and blessed me with this beauty and inspiration.

Some days later I was observing family members entering Queen’s House Retreat Chapel for our Midnight Mass New Year’s gathering. I saw branches of the family assemble in the rows of seats. There were newly weds and expectant mothers, grandparents and grandchildren.

The Family Tree is a rich symbol. If you stretch

out your arms you can touch the branches. Our tree is more than 100 years old and the foliage is thick and expansive near the bottom.

The uppermost branches are bare and white, reaching into heaven. These sentinels point the way, the direction all the growth is going. Every branch tip is pointing upwards. The Communion of Saints comes to mind.

There is a spiritual dimension to the Christ centered family: I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.(John 15:5) As I looked around at my family tree I realized how rich and blessed we all are. Money is insignificant here. Only membership and witness are important. And for the next hour and a half everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, all shared the blessings and news of the past year.

After our prayerful celebration I realized more of the graces that being family includes. A niece asked me, “How did your parents pass on their spiritual values? How did they witness. Can you tell us more about their life stories?”

Choose wisdom

By Linda Wegner Over the past three decades I’ve made it my habit to read through Psalms and Proverbs once a month; for Psalms, that includes five per day and for Proverbs, one chapter a day. What I find most inspiring is that I never cease to discover some new nugget of truth. As I’ve mused on what to write about in the coming year, I decided I would, at least for a few weeks, share some of those nuggets with my readers.

To begin with let me establish the fact that I am no expert, not an highly educated Bible scholar and no interpreter of language - I just know how God has spoken to my own heart through the writings of King David and his son,

Solomon.

Solomon wastes no time in spelling out the importance of wisdom by defining what we are to know, understand, receive and seek out.

That’s so much different that merely collecting information.

In Chapter 2 of the book he notes that wisdom, also called the fear of the Lord, provides us with strength to better avoid giving in to evil, immorality and wrong decisions. That involves actively seeking out God’s will and strength through reading His Word.

As encouraging as is the strength we receive, are the results of pursuing wisdom: “discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you…so you may walk in the way of goodness

I remember my parents’ faith when they faced the challenges of life, like the death of a loved one.

When financial worries surfaced, faith was there.

All through the bumps and bruises of living they clung to their prayer lives and their spiritual commitments.

The daily family rosary was always a chance to assess the events of the day and a chance to realize the workings of grace. “And lead us not into temptation” meant the same in German. “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death”. We knew Mary was our companion through life.

Gratitude and thanksgiving were always part of our family. At weddings, funerals and important celebrations our elders would always celebrate with song: “Holy God we praise thy name…”

There are many young shoots springing up in our family tree. May they be protected by the shade we offer and the roots that ground us to this tree started in Russia so many years ago.

Faith is caught in so many ways, sometimes including the quiet witness of everyday faithfulness.

and keep to the paths of righteousness…” On top of that, we’re human so we fail but He’s faithful and He forgives!

With the World Juniors having just wrapped up – Go Canada Go – it got me wondering why the NHL seems to pick up players straight out of high school, whereas almost any other sport there’s a huge college following.

Turns out this kind of just comes down to the rules of Kelly Running the governing bodies. For exObserver Staff ample, the NBA put into effect the rule that players must complete one year of college or be 19-years-old. The idea is that it would be a stepping stone through high school basketball to a more intense program and finally to the professional level.

Then for the NFL the ruling bodies state that players can’t be drafted until three years after their high school class graduates. This is why College Football in the States is such a big deal, it’s those College Football teams that are carrying the future talent of the NFL. In hockey, however, scouts are on them early and junior hockey like the WHL is where the action is. Those are the future NHL players and for those that don’t make the NHL out of it are off to university and to the professional leagues in Europe.

The NHL sees no reason to postpone someone’s career and do not have the rules that the NBA or the NFL have regarding age requirements.

For some people the student-athlete at the college level is simply there to sell tickets to their games and bolster sales. Many students wouldn’t become college level athletes if those requirements weren’t in place and besides the NBA’s one-year-clause and the NFL’s three-year- clause doesn’t actually allow for that individual to get their degree. Degrees are four years and often for athletes a little longer as they don’t take full course loads in order to be able to be a student-athlete.

When I first started thinking about the situations surrounding professional athletes, I figured it was a good thing they had to go to university as a transition – learn how to thrive in more competitive atmospheres and how to handle yourself; but, as I read more about it, it’s not really needed… Look at before the NBA’s rule came into effect, LeBron James went straight to the pros and is considered one of the best out there. His transition went well, so is that college aspect needed and should it be written into the rules?

For the NHL, the junior programs really act as that transitional step; do you have what it takes or not? That’s usually determined in those junior hockey years where they experience elite competition and even play on national teams in competitions like the World Juniors.

So, although at first I thought it was odd that many professional sports almost require athletes to do a transitional university tour, it does actually make more sense to me the way the NHL operates. If you’re good enough, you’re good enough at whatever age, and that determination has already been followed for at least three years within the junior hockey programs out there.

“Dress in layers and cover up as much skin as possible to avoid frostbite. Keep an eye on those you are with for signs of hypothermia. Watch out for each My Outlook other.”

Shelley Luedtke These are some of the warnings that get extended during extreme cold weather conditions. Alerts warn us of possible or impending danger that the biting cold can bring.

As hurricanes ravaged Caribbean Islands and many areas along the east coast we heard countless warnings by weather services and government officials who urged residents to evacuate to higher ground or head to storm shelters in advance of what they felt would be damaging floods.

We are given other warnings too: warnings about terror alerts, smog levels, the UV index, wind, forest fire and flu warnings. So what do we do with all of them? Which ones do we heed and which do we choose to ignore? Often it depends what’s on the line.

In November 2003 the NHL played its first outdoor game as part of the regular season. Even though the wind chill that night plunged temperatures to -30°C nearly 60,000 fans packed Commonwealth Stadium to watch the Oilers taken on the Canadiens. Described as “bone-chilling”, the players, officials and fans took precautions to withstand the elements. Montreal goaltender Jose Theodore donned a toque to protect his ears against the cold that cut right through his mask. Fans dressed in layers, huddled under blankets, and stomped their feet for warmth, and the referee’s whistle was wrapped in tape near the mouthpiece to prevent it from freezing to his lips. I wasn’t in the stands that night, but if I’d had the opportunity I don’t know of any weather condition that could have kept me away. When it comes to extreme weather we can heed the warnings--or take our chances.

There are other warnings that we may not be able to take such direct action against. A financial group has warned of a crash as large as the one that happened a decade ago. Security experts say we are not adequately prepared for coming cyber attacks and others say a global tech cold war is in the offing.

We have also been informed we will face increased terror threats, growing isolationism and more extreme weather.

Many of these dangers are beyond our influence, and there are factors nationally and globally that will come to bear on our lives and raise cause for concern. Yet this doesn’t tell the entire story. We do get a say.

By being intentional about getting to know others and making them feel like they belong we are fighting isolationism. By being generous with what we have we are fighting the effect of economic downturn for those least able to withstand. By digging deep when a natural disaster hits we are fighting despair.

The extreme cold and storm warnings that were issued urged people to have three days of food and water on hand just in case they were stormed in.

This wouldn’t be a possibility for some at any time of the year, let alone in these conditions. But we can change that.

We were told how important it is to dress in layers and take shelter. This wasn’t a possibility for some. But we can change that.

The warning is just one part of it--the way we react is the other. It’s more powerful than weather, more dynamic than the economy, and stronger than the individual. It is what happens when we assess the risk, determine a course of action and then follow it through.

The alert can warn of a potential danger; but our response is the safeguard. Storm preparedness, savings accounts and warm clothing are places to start.

But how much more effective would be our response if we were to check on a neighbour, offer a ride to someone, share blankets with those who have none , and provide toques to all in need. The best warning ends with the words good for every and all situations--watch out for each other.

That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money

The four times you need to update your will One thing that many people forget to do after a life change is to update their will.

Most people write it, file it and then forget about it. However, “wills need periodic updating, especially when a change comes along,” says Christine Van Cauwenberghe, VicePresident, Tax and Estate Planning for Investors Group.

Here are four times where taking another look at this critical document is a must.

It’s a girl – or boy! A newborn needs lots of attention early on, but the child will need even more care if something happens to you and your spouse. It’s in the will where you’ll indicate who will look after your child if you can’t.

“Designating a guardian is crucial so that someone is prepared to take physical custody of your children and their assets,” says Van Cauwenber-

ghe. Ensure the new child gets a fair inheritance, especially if you already have other children who are already named in the will.

Getting married, again Getting hitched later in life, when one or both of you already has kids, should trigger a will update, too. But be prepared – it’s going to be a complicated revision. You’ll likely need to make sure that your child’s inheritance is not entirely up to the discretion of the step-parent. The will needs to carefully state which children get what, and what happens if a surviving spouse remarries. “It’s important to ensure that children from a previous relationship aren’t disinherited when you have a new spouse,” says Van Cauwenberghe.

Caring for the disabled Having a special needs benefi-

ciary in the family — such as a child born with health issues or a family member who develops them later in life — could necessitate a will change, too, as you’ll need to think ahead to that person’s needs over the long term.

Common law and divorce If you’re living common law, you should definitely be drawing up a will as surviving common-law spouses don’t have the same rights of inheritance as a married person in many Canadian jurisdictions. “It’s important to know the rules in your province and to structure your will and estate plan in a way that best reflects your intentions with respect to your partner,” says Van Cauwenberghe.

On the flipside, a separation or divorce will necessitate a will change. Pay special attention to beneficiary des-

ignations on your pensions, RRSPs, RRIFs, TFSAs, insurance and group benefits. You don’t want those dollars going to your ex.

Revising a will is easier said than done. That’s why it’s a good idea to enlist your lawyer and professional advisor in the process.

Effective Dec. 1, 2018 a veterinary prescription will be needed to use medically important antibiotics in animals The Canadian Animal Health Institute (CAHI) is reminding farmers, feed mills and veterinarians that as of December 1, 2018 a veterinary prescription will be needed to use medically important antimicrobials (antibiotics).

This change is a result of regulatory and policy changes made by Health Canada to promote the responsible use of antimicrobials in animals.

Many of the chemical classes of antimicrobial drugs, or antibiotics, used in animals are also used in humans. Medically important antimicrobials are essential for the treatment of serious and life-threatening infections. If these drugs become ineffective due to the development of bacterial resistance, alternative antimicrobials may not be available.

Drugs with limited or no al-

ternatives for the treatment of human infections are considered more important than others.

These drugs will no longer be available for purchase at livestock medicines outlets, co-operatives, or other places where over-the-counter animal medications are sold. In addition, from November 13, 2017 on these antimicrobials can no longer be imported for own use. Medically important antimicrobials will only be available, with a veterinary prescription, from a veterinarian, pharmacist or as a mixed medicated feed from a feed mill.

In recognition of the importance of antimicrobials for

animal health and welfare, and the need ensure these important tools remain effective, the manufacturers of veterinary drugs are voluntarily removing growth promotion claims on their antimicrobial products.

Further, a voluntary logo will be included on labels to remind users of the importance of responsible use.

The Carlyle PureChem Cougars rang in the New Year with their first game of 2018 on Saturday, Jan. 6, against the Oxbow Huskies.

The first period saw the Cougars come out with the first goal by Ben Johnstone assisted

Atom Cougars end year on winning note Tammie Riddell Sports Contributor The Cougars hosted the Carievale Storm on Saturday, Dec. 23.

This was the last game of the year and we had many spectators who were back in town for the holidays to cheer on the home team. The Cougars drew first blood and scored at 16:07.

The game continued with passing and great saves at both ends. Carlyle slipped one by the Carievale goalie at 8:53,

the buzzer blew, and the teams headed down to the dressing room with the Cougars leading 2-0.

The Storm scored their one and only goal at 17:54 in the second period. The Cougars were relentless and scored five goals in the second to end the period 7-1.

The Cougars continued their attack in the third with an additional four goals, Ending the game and the 2017 season with a 11-1 victory over the Carievale storm.

The Cougars hit the road to Redvers on Friday, Jan. 4, to play the first game of the year! The parents knew this game would not disappoint.

The last time we played each other, the game ended in 6-6 tie. The Cougars came out with their teeth bared and claws sharpened. They skated hard, passed the puck, received some penalties and scored 4 goals, ending the period 4-2.

Knights spinning on - ice magic in Vegas

Bruce Penton There’s a magic show on almost every corner in Las Vegas, from Criss Angel to David Copperfield, but pulling more rabbits out of a hat than anyone in Sin City has been the Vegas Golden Knights, the best National Hockey League expansion team in history. And that’s no illusion.

This column has been three months in the making. At first, it was going to be about the Knights getting off to a great start but predictably fading back to the middle of the pack, eventually out of a playoff spot. They’re an expansion team after all.

After a couple of weeks, with higher numbers in the ‘W’ column, this story was going to be about the amazing first couple of months the Knights put together and wasn’t it fun while it lasted?

Now, it’s January,

and it’s ridiculous. The Golden Knights are the best team in the NHL’s Western Conference, with no fall in sight. A record of 28-10-2 on Jan. 6, an astonishing 17[2-1 at home.

The Knights, under general manager George McPhee and coach Gerard Gallant and propelled by a bunch of players who were veritable ‘nobodies’ within their original organizations, have become somebodies on the Vegas strip. Bona fide contenders.

Like William Karlsson, a third-line player with Columbus last year who had 20 goals by mid-season. Like goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, who had some success with Pittsburgh Penguins before losing his job last year to Matt Murray.

Like Deryk Engelland, a household name only in his own house, who has been a rock on defence and the face of the franchise after a sombre opening night when the Knights organization paid homage to the victims of the Oct. 1 mass shooting on the Strip.

The Golden Knights have smashed every expansion team record ever thought of, and only

the most pessimistic — or drunk — oddsmaker on the Strip would envision a scenario where they miss the playoffs. In fact — don’t laugh — the Knights are Stanley Cup contenders.

Why? How is this possible, with a roster of rejects, third-liners, rarely-weres and hangers-on? One reason is simple: They work harder than any other team in the league. One opposing coach complained facetiously that the Knights were playing in October with playoffstyle drive and that it was upsetting the applecart in the otherwise gothrough-the-motionsregular-season of the NHL. Playoff style? By April, the Knights will be accustomed to that style of play, so watch out.

Vegas may be overrun by rabbits — and playoff crowds — this spring.

The annual Holiday Mosaic Potluck Meal and Volleyball Competition was again a big success. Thank you to

the community RCMP, Firefighters, and EMT members who came out to play some volleyball against the students and staff. A big thank you to Mr. Johnson for organizing the event.

The GFK Students Against Drinking and Driving chapter sold “Mocktails” and cotton candy the last week of school before the break to raise funds for programs to raise awareness of the drinking and driving issue.

Fitness Club continues in the New Year on Tuesdays, Wednes-

days, and Thursdays, from 7:45 – 8:30AM. All fitness levels are welcome. Come out and get your day started with some fitness.

They scored at 23:10 in the second, the Cougars answered back quickly with a goal. The rockets continued with pressure and scored another two goals. When the players retreated to the dressing rooms the Cougars were leading 6-5. The Rockets continued their assault on the Cougars in the third by scoring four goals. The Cougars peb-

bled the Rockets’ goalie with shots, but he managed to shut the door on every shot. The Cougars lost 6-9.

On Saturday, January 6, the Cougars faced the Oxbow Huskies in our barn. The Huskies found the back of the net first at 20:43, and scored another quick one at 19:36. The Cougars continued skating hard, passing the puck and shooting on goal. Finally, their efforts paid off and the boys scored at

14:25, they scored with 2:24 left in the first, ending the period in a 2-2 tie.

Both teams battled hard in the second! There were some fantastic saves at both ends by the boys between the pipes.

Our forwards were skating, passing, shooting, and back checking. The D men were stopping the opposition, passing to the head men and rushing the puck. At the end of the second, the two teams entered the dressing rooms in a 3-3

tie. The Cougar coaches must have had a major motivational speech at intermission! The boys came out spitting fire!

The Cougars pounced on the Huskies and scored six goals in the third.

Our goalie made some incredible saves and denied every shot. The final score was 9-3, another “W” for the Cougars.

Our next game is on Sunday, January 14, 3:00 in Kipling. See you at the rink!

District #41 4-H curling report Submitted by Redvers Wranglers 4-H Light Horse Club The Redvers Wranglers 4-H Light Horse Club hosted District #41 4-H Curling on Saturday January 6, 2018. 41 4-H members from Redvers Wranglers, Carievale Beef, Alameda Beef, Alida Beef, Carnduff Beef & Glen Ewen Mixed 4-H Clubs participated.

There were 7 fun curling teams, as well as a junior competitive team from the Alameda Beef Club, and senior competitive teams from the Alameda Beef and Glen Ewen Mixed Clubs.

The senior competitive team from Alameda Beef 4-H Club includes Paige Freitag, Reegan Frey, Shaelyn Walls, Grace Christensen and Genevieve Pryce. The Glen Ewen Mixed competitive team includes Gina Bayliss, Jill Bayliss, Mariah Warriner and Morgan Bayliss. Everyone played really well.

Thank you to Katrina Lynch for officiating the competitive curling for the day.

The junior competitive team, consisting of Madeline Christensen, Kate Nielsen, Summer Arthur and Laura Chris-

tensen, participated in fun curling for the day, then played the senior team from Alameda for extra practice.

The Junior and Senior teams from the Alameda Beef 4-H Club will be advancing to Regional 4-H Curling to be held in Lampman on January 13. We wish them all the best!

The fun curling teams played 2 – 4 end games, then participated in “Bingo Curling” where they had the chance to try some different moves to mark off their bingo cards such as curling with the wrong hand, backwards, 1 handed or

2 handed, curl with a partner, different draws and take-outs, throwing the rock while laying on their stomach, and much more. They had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs.

The Redvers Wranglers 4-H Light Horse Club would like to thank all of the curlers for coming out for the day, the Redvers Curling Club for running the kitchen & looking after the ice, all of the clubs, families and businesses who donated items for the prize table, the parents and leaders who helped out with Bingo Curling, and to everyone who helped the day run smoothly.

On Dec. 29 they travelled to Saskatoon to visit with Phil’s parents. On Dec. 31, Faith attended a New Year’s celebration in Moose Jaw before leaving to spend the next 3 months in Africa.

Several Wawota residents attended the birthday celebration for Jim Brownlee last Saturday. He was honored on his 80th birthday with an afternoon tea and supper.

I read 84 books in 2017 and saved almost $3,000.00 by using our public library. On New Year’s Eve, my 7-yearold grandson asked if I was going try to read 100 books for the year. I may be a fast reader but knew that was an unattainable feat.

I am still looking for holiday news.

Jason, April Junk and family spent December 28-31 visiting in Sylvan Lake, AB with Jody, Jill Junk and boys, as well as with Kara Junk and her daughter Morgan. They also took in the West Edmonton Mall before returning home.

Supper guests with Gray and Edel Cowan on December 31 were Faye Walker, Dale and Holly Anthony. Happy New Year everyone.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan spent a couple of days in the new year visiting the Nilsen family in Minot.

Parry and Lynette Peet spent a couple of days in Melfort, SK where they watched Lynette’s sister, Amber Holland and her team participate in the Saskatchewan Provincial Women’s Curling.

Unfortunately Amber didn’t make the playoffs, better luck next year.

On Jan. 4 April Junk drove her daughter Adrianna and Ally Schulhauser to Weyburn where the girls participated in their dance routine for their dance competition.

Faye Walker spent some quality time with her granddaughter Abby Nickel on Thursday afternoon when she took Abby to the hairdressers to have her hair all done up to her own specifications (color, cut and curl).

Happy Birthday Abby – it must have been fun!

Faye also spent a while visiting with the rest of the Nickel family before they returned home to Saskatoon.

I am soooo angry with myself (can’t read my text messages correctly) – I missed getting over to Redvers on Saturday, January 6 to watch granddaughter Ainsley participate in her first curling experience – dang it! Oh well, did receive some pictures of the event and she did seem to enjoy it.

It was the 4-H curling taking place at Redvers rink, hopefully there will be some coverage of the event that one can enjoy reading about and seeing pictures. I’m also

Sunday, Jan. 7 was the first Breakfast of the season held at the Alida Rink with Kitchen Group # 4 at the helm. They served up 34 breakfasts, a job well done guys and gals. This sets the total for the challenge to begin. Kitchen Group # 1 will be in charge next week. Special recognition goes out to Brian Dangstorp who generously supplied the “special” orange juice – appreciate it Dangy – it was good!

Just a reminder – have you gotten your ticket for the “Gourmet Dinner for 8” which is sponsored by the Alida Rec. Board? The draw will be made on Feb. 25 and the winner has a choice of three different meals that will be delivered and served at the destination agreed upon by the winner and the committee. The dinner must be held sometime on or before Mar. 31, 2018. Good Luck to those who purchase a ticket.

The skating ice is in and everyone is enjoying the activity of skating. Do come and lace up your skates for a tour around the ice surface. The Alida Wreaks Hockey team have been utilizing the ice and have had a couple of games as well.

The Alida Curling Club is hosting two events in the very near future – A Family Funspiel in January and the Oilmen’s Bonspiel in February. The Funspiel will be held in conjunction with the Alida Rink’s Grand Opening.

Do come out and participate in the activities during this big day – curling, skating, hockey games, auctions, and delicious rink food as well as a special supper and much more – come support the Alida Rec. Board. It will be a great time to see the new renovations made to the rink after the 2014 flood.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

February 23, 1952 - December 24, 2017 Sandra would like to let you know that her work here is done. Early on Sunday, December 24, 2017, she received an offer she couldn’t refuse for an appointment from which she will not be returning, a reunion with family and friends she has not seen in a long time, security that far exceeds any other. This wonderful place where she will be gardening, sewing, socializing, beaching, crafting until her heart is content.

Music, laughter and love are guaranteed.

She left instructions for us to celebrate her departure here. Sandra was a strong, independent woman whom spoke her mind and we minded when she spoke. We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons during her 65 years. We will remember, well everything, she was a master of all tasks set in front of her. She made a difference in the lives of many.

She was predeceased by her parents, Russ and Mary Kyle; and her sister Shirley Darby. Remembering Sandra is her brother Ron (Shirley) Kyle; her children Derrick (Shelley) Big Eagle, and Misti (Charlie) Big Eagle-Bayliss; grandsons, whom she was also very proud of, Masen and Jett Big Eagle and Wyatt Bayliss who will continue to remember the many times with Grandma San; many nieces and nephews; along with her close friends, who were like her family.

So, with all that knew her, we invite you to join us and celebrate together at the Four Seasons in Kenosee Lake, on Friday, January 12, 2018 from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. She always was a night owl.

As the Executive Director, you will represent the Board at meetings with other Agencies dealing with water management. You will also deal directly with the Secretary-Treasurers of the 100 C&Ds and 13 WABs located throughout the province. You will also be responsible along with the Board to organize an Annual General Meeting as well as any other meetings that may be called. You will be expected to keep the SaskCDA website current.

The Executive Director is responsible, along with the Board, to determine an annual budget and to set and collect the membership and insurance fees for the C&Ds and WABs. The Executive Director maintains accurate accounting records and has the books audited. The Executive Director is also responsible to ensure that the SaskCDA maintains its status as a Non Profit Organization.

Lorraine Ethel Beatty (nee McCrea) Lorraine Ethel Beatty (nee McCrea) passed away at the age of 88 in Crysler, ON, December 21, 2017. Lorraine was born to William and Evangeline McCrea on April 6, 1929 in Baldwinton, SK. Lorraine grew up on a farm in the Baldwinton area. After graduating Grade XII, she attended Teacher’s College in Saskatoon and taught at the Robinson School in the Manor area. She married Clifford Beatty in 1952 and raised three sons in Manor.

She worked for many years as a waitress in the Duck Inn Café. In 1969 Cliff and Lorraine bought the Red & White Store in Manor. A company travel plan allowed them to travel to Hawaii, Acapulco, Las Vegas, Florida, the Caribbean and San Diego. Lorraine and Cliff also visited Europe where she was very happy to dip her toes in the Danube River and see a Lipizzaner stallion in Vienna. She also made trips to Ireland to visit relatives – on one visit she even kissed the Blarney Stone. They had a successful business until they sold the store in 1986. Lorraine was very involved in community activities, sitting on Town Council and was active in the Ladies Auxiliary, Knox United Church, the Manor museum and the Regional food bank.

Lorraine enjoyed the companionship of her family and friends and a good game of cards. She had a sharp wit and would always try to �ind the best in people although she did have a bit of an Irish temper and was never reluctant to say how she really felt. She was extremely proud of her three boys who all joined the Canadian Forces and served across Canada and on several international operations accumulating more than 100 years of total service.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years. Cliff Beatty of Manor, SK in 2005.She is survived by her sons Master Warrant Of�icer (retd) Douglas Beatty (Katherine) Kemptville, ON , Lieutenant-Colonel (retd) Warren Beatty (Catherine) Port Alice, BC and Master Warrant Of�icer (retd) Kimberly Beatty (Caterina) Crylser, ON, six grandchildren,seven great grandchildren, her sister Victoria, brother Ted and many nieces and nephews.

We honour our mother’s wishes in having no funeral and know that she is loved and will be forever in our hearts. Lorraine was cremated in Ottawa on Dec 28 2017. Her ashes will be reunited with Cliff’s at a graveside service at the Manor Cemetery on June 9, 2017.

In lieu of �lowers, donations should be made to a charity of your choice that will improve the lives of others.
