A symbol of remembrance Why wear a poppy?

In the language of flowers, the poppy, stands for consolation, while red is a symbol of passion and love. Thus, wearing a red poppy on Remembrance Day and the week’s leading up to it, are a way to remember those that have given and continue to give their lives in service to our country.

World War I, although named The Great War, was devastating. Trench warfare meant that very little territorial advancement was made or lost by either side fighting in the war.

The majority of fighting took place in Western Europe, a place which before the war was of lush green grass and a beautiful countryside. The war quickly turned the landscape from a beautiful, serene place to one pockmarked by shells exploding.

The land was barren, except for the mud, which had enveloped the no man’s land between the trench lines.

Nothing grew except for the fears of being in a war; a war which looked impossible to resolve. A war, which was supposed to be over quickly turned into four years of brutal battle.

During the springs of the war the barren land where battles were waged and lives were lost battlefields of bright red flowers – poppies – began sprouting up. The Flanders poppies (Papaver rhoeas), although delicate, are resilient and grew amongst the devastation. The soil had in fact been enriched with lime by the rubble and bomb debris, which made for good growing conditions.

For the Canadian doctor, Lt Col John McCrae, he was struck by the poppies, which were growing in a cemetery where his friend had been buried. In May 1915, he had lost a friend at Ypres, and as the poppies grew, blooming a brilliant red he was inspired to write, the now famous poem, “In Flanders Fields.” A poem, which became a representation of the sacrifices servicemen and women give.

That poem, which was first published in England’s Punch magazine in December of 1915 inspired an American woman from Georgia, Moina Michael, to wear a poppy year-round in memory of those who lost their lives in the war. She also wrote a reply to “In Flanders Fields” which was called “We Shall Keep the Faith.”

In 1920, Anna Guerin of France, visited Michael.

Guerin was inspired to sell poppies, handmade by widows of war, as a way to raise money for children affected by war in France.

The movement grew and poppies became a symbol of remembrance. In 1921, nine million were ordered by the Royal British Legion, they were all handmade by veterans that year, and were sold on Nov. 11. The next year, following a successful poppy campaign, a poppy factory was established to keep up with demands by Major George Howson. Funds raised were then used to help WW1 veterans with employment and housing.

In Canada the Great War Veteran’s Association, the predecessor of the Royal Canadian Legion, adopted the Poppy as its Flower of Remembrance on July 5, 1921.

Today, in Canada, the Poppy Campaign begins the last Friday in October. It is worn on the left lapel, or simply near the heart. Many people will wear the poppy until the end of the Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11, where they lay their poppy at the base of the cenotaph in their community as a sign of respect.

Funds raised through the Poppy Campaign supports veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP, as well as their families.

The Poppy Trust Funds are put towards, as stated on the Legion’s website (www.legion.ca): • - Grants for food, heating costs, clothing, prescription medication, medical appliances and equipment, essential home repairs and emergency shelter or assistance • - Housing accommodation and care facilities • - Funding for Veteran Transition Programs that are directly related to the training, education and support needs of Veterans and their families • - Comforts for Veterans and their surviving spouses who are hospitalized and in need • - Veterans visits, transportation, reading programs and day trips - Accessibility modifications to assist Veterans with disabilities

Poppies are available in many stores throughout communities across Canada. Consider making a donation to the Poppy Trust Fund and picking up a poppy to pin to your jacket as a way to remember those that have sacrificed so much for us to live the lives we are able to.

- Educational bursaries for children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Veterans - Community drop-in centres, meals-on-wheels, and seniors services in communities where Veterans would benefit - Community medical appliances, medical training and medical research which will assist in the care of Veterans in the community - Support the work of Legion Command and Branch Service Officers across Canada in assisting and representing Veterans - Donations for relief of disasters declared by federal or provincial governments which impact Veteran in those communities - Promotion and administering of Remembrance activities to ensure Canadians never forget the sacrifices of Canada’s Veterans

Parenting Tips from Regional Kids First Pleasant and nutritious meal times

Mealtimes can be chaotic. Everyone has different likes and dislikes. Here are some suggestions for helping your children enjoy eating nutritious food at mealtimes: • Be consistent with meal times. Serve breakfast, lunch and supper at the same time daily.

• Between meals, offer light, nutritious snacks.

Try vegetable slices, fruit pieces, whole grain crackers, hard boiled eggs or yogurt.

• Let your children feed themselves. Praise their efforts.

• Make several foods your children like, along with something they haven’t tried before. Don’t worry if they don’t eat the new food. It can take up to 7 tries before children learn to like a food.

• Let your children decide when they have had enough to eat. Make it clear that snacks will not be allowed for at least an hour after they leave the table, though.

• Limit the amount of drinks at mealtime, as they can be very filling.

• Try not to nag your children when they don’t eat much of what you have made. Meals will be more enjoyable if you don’t stress about how much or which foods your children eat.

Goliath Disposal donates fire truck to Kisbey Fire Department Kelly Running Observer Staff

Goliath Disposal of Weyburn – a full service waste and recycling hauler serving Southeast Saskatchewan – wanted to do something different for the communities they serve. Deciding on purchasing a City of Calgary fire truck they would present it to a local Fire Department in need. This is exactly what they did on Wednesday, Oct. 25, when the Kisbey Fire Department was presented with the fire truck – a newer model than their previous truck.

“We looked to see who in our area of Southeast Saskatchewan was in need of a fire truck, so while we were investigating I spoke with John [Voutour] and asked him some questions,” Teresa Sterling with Goliath Disposal explained. “We

decided this community needs it. We wanted to give something back to the communities that support us, and the Village of Kisbey and R.M. of Brock have supported us and were in need of a fire truck.”

The decision to donate a fire truck was the want to do something different and the realization that it would make a big impact – everyone needs emergency services and the volunteers put a lot of time into ensuring the service is available. The donation of a fire truck helps volunteers to best be prepared when attending a fire call.

“It was a total surprise,” John Voutour, Kisbey Fire Chief, stated excitedly. “I can’t say enough about their generosity. I’m just flabbergasted. It’s a huge donation for us and will make a big difference.”

In all humility we have to admit to other disorders we have created like the pro abortion movement. It is unnatural and disordered to cause the death of the

unborn. This evil gives rise to other absurdities.

Who Has It. Many positive changes are giving us hope that respect for live is emerging. Bills are being passed in legislatures to eliminate late term abortions. Scientific knowledge is advancing to make us aware that a preborn baby can feel pain as early as eight to ten weeks.

Employees of the Southern Plains Co-op in Carlyle served up a delicious pancake breakfast for Manor School on Monday, Oct. 30. The idea for the pancake breakfast originated with a Branding Committee being formed by the Southern Plains Co-op and each of their stores. “Decia Knockhaert is the main coordinator of this event and there’s several other volunteers from the store that came to help today,” Derrick Edwards – Carlyle Branch Manager – explained.

Weekly RCMP report Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle detachment of the RCMP responded to a variety of calls between Oct. 19 and Oct. 26.

911 call Four 911 calls were received by RCMP: the first call was an accident as an individual attempted to connect a conference call, one call involved a pocket dial, one was made by mistake, and the fourth was someone abusing the emergency line.

Animal call There were cattle reported near Wawota on the highway. Patrols were made, but the cattle had “moo’ved” on.

Assault An alleged assault in Arcola resulted in charges for both assault and uttering threats.

There is an assault investigation ongoing in the Carlyle area.

Assistance RCMP assisted Surrey RCMP in locating an individual.

Carlyle RCMP assisted the Prince Albert Police Service with a warrant.

RCMP assisted Weyburn involving the use of someone else’s name at a traffic stop conducted.

RCMP attended mental health calls.

A well-being check was conducted for a family on an individual.

There was an incident involving a youth who took a nude selfie of themselves and it was forwarded on to others within the detachment area. Staff Sergeant

Darren Simons explains, “If you receive the photo of an individual who is under age, think it’s funny, and send it to someone else you are now actually responsible for transmitting child pornography.

Taking inappropriate photos is risky, if they do go out, it’s something that stays out there; it never leaves the digital world. If you receive something like this go to a parent, teacher, or the police right away.”

“Our goal isn’t to place charges; we’re focused on preventing it from happening and prevent it from continuing.”

Property damage at a recreational facility in the Carlyle area was reported.

Theft A “gas and dash” – theft under $5,000 – was determined to be unfounded. An individual stopped for gas and some items from inside.

The employee had the individual pay for the products inside, but had forgotten about the gas.

There was a theft in the Redvers area involving equipment and is currently under investigation.

A theft of a motor vehicle from the Carlyle area was reported. The individual knows who took it.

Lost cell phone An individual’s cell phone went missing and they received a bill for over $1,000. This matter is under investigation. RCMP would like to remind readers that if they lose or misplace their cell phone it is important to contact their service provider immediately.

A stolen phone was recovered by the owner.

Drug related incidents An investigation regarding drug use was conducted. Two were arrested and one was charged.

Marijuana and drug paraphernalia was seized in Carlyle.

Uttering threats While RCMP were doing a search of a residence, the occupant threatened a police officer and the individual was arrested and charged.

A report of threats uttered in Carlyle was reported.

Phishing: How many take the bait?

Information from Get Cyber Safe When it comes to cyber safety, it is important to be vigilant and know that if you feel something is off, it likely is.

“Using fake emails and crafty scams, phishers trawl the cyber high seas for your banking information, credit card numbers, and passwords,” Get Cyber Safe writes. “Roughly 156 million phishing emails are sent globally every day, so even if a fraction fall for the scam, phishers score big.”

According to Cyber Safe of these 156 million emails, a total of 16 million will find their way through filters: “Many phishing emails end their journey destroyed in spam filters; 10 percent make it through.”

Of those 10 percent that make it through, Cyber Safe states that approximately half of those are opened: “Of those emails that are opened, 10 percent lure someone into clicking on a phishing link.”

Face covering bans

With Quebec and countries around the world like Austria introducing a face covering ban, things are likely going to get difficult for law enforcement.

The laws are essentially directed towards the burka and niqab that Muslim women wear to practice their faith and dress modestly, however, the laws are written a little more ambiguously though to as not infringe upon the rights of any particular

group of people.

So, the laws in Austria permit masks or makeup at special events or covering your face for sickness or medical reasons. The law in Austria, however, meant that police were led to a store earlier in October to arrest a Lego Ninja mascot promoting merchandise and the Lego Ninjago movie because of the ambiguity surrounding the law.

In Canada, during our harsh winters, we’ll often bundle up to the point that only our eyes are visible and depending how long we’ll be in a store or on a bus for, we may not take that off – it’s a hassle to get all bundled up.

For security reasons, if someone needs to see someone’s face, then I do believe they need to show it. Going through the airport, verifying a bus pass, etc… however, because for some women covering the face is a religious choice, they should have the option of doing it in a closed room with a female security officer.

Some say I’m too liberal in my views sometimes, but I was raised to respect all people and although they may be different than me in their views of the world, we should still respect them as people. Our country was essentially built on immigration, so we have a wide variety of individuals with different beliefs and it’s important we honour who we are as a country.

We respect each other and have Rights and Freedoms in place to ensure this… a Freedom of Religion – which is stipulated in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms – is part of our foundation as a country, but the limit comes when it infringes upon someone else’s Rights and Freedoms; so, security and safety should be at the forefront of everything we do. Yet, at the same time we can’t be taking away someone else’s legal Rights and Freedoms.

People always talk about a melting pot when it comes to Western nations; however, someone once called what Western nations should be is a salad. A salad is made more delicious with each individual vegetable, meat, nut, seeds, dressing, etc… added to it; a salad would not be very good blended up into a smoothie. Our nation is the same; every culture adds something to who we are. I love living somewhere that I can learn about different cultures and religions; I love living somewhere that embraces foods from all over the world – I wish I could learn how to make bannock, butter chicken, pad Thai, and so much more, because I have fallen in love with each of those foods. That opportunity to enjoy such a variety of food never would have happened otherwise.

The world is small in this day and age. We are essentially global citizens as the world is so very interconnected.

So, yes, security and ensuring safety of citizens should be at the forefront of every law made – which I think it is – but, when it comes to facial coverings it needs to be an across the board law which includes balaclavas, scarfs, costumes, etc.

When the lights go down A day of shopping with me has become pretty predictable to my family. If we find ourselves separated they know I will be looking at either cards, containers or candles.

I’ve shared before how much I love sending cards so those racks would be a good place to start, and as for the containers—well, I am drawn to just My Outlook Shelley Luedtke about any size, shape and type of basket or box. Professional organizers tell you to sort through your stuff and then determine what types of containers you might need.

I buy pretty containers in the certainty I will use them to hold something, somewhere, at some point.

And then there are candles. How I love candles!

Clearly I’m not alone. Candles are found in 7 out of 10 households generating $3.2 billion in revenue, not including accessories—which for me can be an equally satisfying purchase. Pretty candles inside pretty containers…perfection.

With the invention of the incandescent light bulb the primary use of candles changed but they continued to be valued as items of decoration and celebration and they play an important role in religious ceremonies and festivals all over the world.

They are so central to much of what we do we automatically associate them with other events--Christmas Eve and candlelight; a bubble bath and candlelight; a romantic dinner and candlelight.

Beyond creating ambience and casting a glow in which to bask, the 10,000 scents available to consumers can elicit powerfully emotional responses.

Breathe in cinnamon or gingerbread spice and let holiday memories wash over you, or picture yourself on an island with any of the tropical or sea breeze options. A recognizable aroma drifts through the rooms and hallways of the Hotel Costes in Paris thanks to candles infused with the formula created by a French perfumer. Guests can take the memories…and the aroma…home with them thanks to its best-selling candles infused with the signature scent. Candles decorate our birthday cakes, mark unity in marriage, and prove themselves tremendously valuable during storms and power outages.

They can also be a beacon of hope and a symbol of solidarity.

The word candle is derived from the Latin ‘candere’ meaning to be white or to glisten. Though we may invoke layers of ceremonial meaning and emotion into the flickering of a flame, the light of a candle is really meant to do one thing--to shine; to bring light into a darkened space. It’s why candlelight vigils often follow events of unspeakable tragedy whether carefully planned or a spontaneous outpouring of sorrowful expression. They are a way of saying we want to bring a glimmer of light into the situation, that we desire to shine a ray of hope into the moment and symbolically dispel the darkness. It’s a statement of coming together, of drawing close as a community to support each other despite the shadows in which we find ourselves. No matter what has happened, we refuse to let it have the last word.

From the rubble of downed towers in New York City, to the cenotaph on Parliament Hill, to the sidewalks of Las Vegas, Nevada, candlelight processions have provided a sense of community, fellowship and strength against acts that have taken innocent lives and shattered too many dreams. Tiny flames of individual candles meld with countless others to bring a brilliant beam of light and a beacon of hope.

Although the materials and processes used to make candles has changed, their ability to evoke powerful sentiment has not. Whether it’s in the glimmer of a flickering votive or the dance of flames on a candelabra; in the majesty of tapers adorning cathedrals or the ones held in small hands on a darkened night, candles induce quiet, a time for reflection, and the promise that there is hope for another day.

I love having candles burning in my home, but I will admit many remain unused. They are sitting in places or from occasions that don’t easily allow for them to be burned. Yet I know that those candles aren’t doing what they were intended to do.

Sometimes I wonder if we are kind of like those unlit ones. It would seem those operating in the dark are having their way right now. So we need to grab opportunities to light it up again. We can’t hold back or feel too timid to step forward. We have to do more than sit. We need to ignite our desire to act so the flame can grow and the light can spread. We have the same call as the candle--in all its accompanying sizes, shapes, hues and scent. We simply need to let it glow. That’s my outlook.

Practical Money Matters: Planning that affordable holiday trip

Generally, families with children or those who need specific seating and/or direct flights may need to plan earlier to secure such reservations.

More flexible travellers can roll the dice on last-minute deals.

Here are some ideas to explore: Be open-minded about scheduling. Most people know red-eye and early morning flights are typically cheaper.

However, holiday travel presents its own set of opportunities for pricing and availability if you don’t follow the crowd. Choosing a different scheduling window, including travel on the actual holiday,

may not only save money but considerable stress getting to and from clogged airports, trains and bus stations.

If you’re driving to your destination, drive smart or leave the keys at home. If you’re using your own automobile, make sure your collision and liability coverage are adequate to cover potential medical and repair costs for other motorists if you’re in an accident out of town.

If you’re planning to rent a vehicle, speak with your auto insurance agent before you go. Many personal policies do extend domestic collision and liability coverage to rentals, but it’s particularly important to confirm coverage if you’re travelling outside Canada. Of course, if you’re visiting a place with excellent public transportation or safe bike routes, check pricing. An affordable bike rental (pack a helmet) or multi-day city or regional bus-and-rail pass might eliminate the need for a car altogether.

Sleep cheap.

Saving money on accommodations is another area where you

can save significant dollars by either planning in advance or trolling for last-minute bargains. Top family destinations generally require reservations months in advance, but see how full they are closest to the actual holiday dates. Many family members may travel a week before or a week after the actual holiday. That leaves more rooms and activities available during the actual holiday. The same goes for stays in other popular tourist locations around the world.

Check destination hotels closer to the date to see if they’re offering special rates or packages.

Put your membership dollars to work. If you belong to an auto club or have credit cards with particular travel benefits, see whether any of those benefits – from actual mileage points to coupon discounts – can be used to save money.

Household items that are toxic for your pet The fridge can be an exciting place for your pet, full of many different treats. But it can also be full of harmful foods that you may not be aware of. Just because something is good and even healthy for a human to eat, does not mean it is good for your pet to eat.

Onions and garlic are a staple in our diets, we even grow them in our gardens.

However, they contain a compound that causes damage to red blood cells in cats and dogs. The symptoms can be delayed several days as more red blood cells become damaged and non-functioning.

Symptoms can show up as pale gums, weakness, and increased breathing rate. If you believe your cat or dog has ingested garlic or onion please call your veterinarian immediately. The sooner treatment can begin, the more likely your pet will have a positive outcome.

Chocolate is a well-known substance for being toxic to dogs. The toxicity of chocolate depends on the amount eaten, the size of your pet and the type of chocolate. Baker’s chocolate and dark chocolate are most toxic as they contain more of the substance Theobromine. Symptoms include excitation, increased heart rate, tremors that can lead to seizures and difficulty breathing. If you believe your dog has ingested chocolate please call your veterinarian immediately. Have an idea of how much your dog weighs, how much chocolate they have ingested and the type of chocolate so that they can determine the appropriate treatment needed.

Another toxic food that many people don’t know about is grapes and raisins.

The toxic substance and the mechanism of action are not well understood, but it is linked to acute kidney fail-

ure in dogs. Symptoms are those of kidney failure: small amount of urine produced or no urine produced, and very dilute urine produce. The issue with grapes and raisins is that even a dog who has eaten them several times throughout their life and never had an issue, can react at any time to develop kidney disease. So it is safest to avoid ever giving your dog grapes and just pick an alternative treat.

While lilies aren’t a food item found in a home, they are often a decoration. Lilies are exceptionally toxic to our feline friends. Cats have an enzyme in their livers that cause lilies to be converted to toxic compounds that cause acute kidney failure. So symptoms will be reduced urine output and dilute urine. If you believe your cat has ingested lilies, treat it as an emergency and see your veterinarian immediately.

Bottom line: Holiday travel bargains can be found months in advance and sometimes at the last minute. Your flexibility will determine the deals you can get.

World series homers leave lasting memories tied 3-3 after nine. It was 5-5 after 10. Houston went ahead 7-5 in the 11th; the Dodgers came back with one of their own in the bottom of the inning, a homer

It certainly ranks with one of the best of all time, but what are some of the others?

If you’re of a certain age (like mine), you won’t forget Oct. 13, 1960, when Bill Mazeroski of Pittsburgh homered to lead off the bottom of the ninth, breaking a 9-9 tie and giving the Pirates a seventhgame, walk-off (more like ‘jump-up-anddown-off’) victory over the New York Yankees.

If you’re of a more contemporary age, then Joe Carter’s World-Serieswinning home run for the Blue Jays over Philadelphia in 1993 might be your most unforgettable World Series moment.

Baseball has taken its lumps lately — drawn-out games, too many pitching changes, s-l-o-w and s-l-o-w-er. But it’s known as the national pastime for a reason and this year’s World Series was the best advertisement the game could ever hope to get.

The Series featured two outstanding teams, Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers, both of whom won 100 or more games (only the seventh time in baseball history the Series has featured two 100-plus winners), and fans were treated to the best the game can offer.

In fact, historians and fans of the great American pastime are suggesting Game 2 — won 7-6 by Houston in 11 innings — may rank among the all-time best.

Dwayne and Shannon Linder, Pat Linder, Bailey Pryce and Dawson travelled to Medicine Hat last week where they spent several days visiting. They visited with Colin and Anita Hyde, Tony and Judy Hyde and Charlene Hyde and families.

Sympathy to the Edwards family on the passing of Bob Hancock. He was married to Doreen Edwards and lived in Carnduff. He was 87 years old. Also Randy, son of Ron and Pauline Edwards of Estevan passed away at the age of 61 years.

As a result of Ken Frederickson’s bronze sculpting shown at the Shurniak Gallery he has

been asked to contribute a bronze sculpture for the Calgary Stampede next year.

Frida Puskas has moved to Saskatoon. We wish her well in her new home.

Irene Husband is moving to the Maryfield Villa. She will join May Hambleton, Ruth Holmstrom and Ruth Dennis there.

Wende Brady of Maryfield passed on October 16th. She was 75 years old. Her funeral service was held at the United Church in Maryfield on Oct. 20.

Ron Olver of Fairlight also passed away recently. He was 80 years old and his funeral was held on Oct. 21.

Our big news this past week was the marriage of our youngest child. Craig and Nicole Wen were married in Pingtung, Taiwan on Oct. 25.

It was a Spooktacular Saturday on Oct. 28 with a Family Halloween Fair and Monster Bash hosted at Carlyle

Youth were able to come dressed in their Halloween costumes and participate in a variety of activities planned for the afternoon.

Helping out for the day were these two young ladies, who volunteered to help with activities throughout the day.

The Photo Booth held at the Spooktacular was sponsored by the Southern Plains Coop.

Cornerstone Family and Youth hosted a successful fundraising event on Saturday, Oct. 28, as they celebrated Halloween in Carlyle’s Memorial Hall.

From scary to cute, there were a variety of awesome costumes and a lot of fun had at the Spooktacular Saturday held

by CFY on Oct. 28.

Roy Zander Roy Zander passed away at the Redvers Health Centre, Redvers, SK on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at the age of 92 years.

Roy will be forever remembered and loved by his siblings, twin sister Tillie Daku, Annie Sylvestre, Kay Daku, Rose Zander and Nestor Zander, as well as several special nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Justinus and Rose Zander; siblings, Mary (Harry) Tasker, Adam (Nettie) Zander, Joe (Alleen) Zander, Tony Zander, Jack (Joan) Zander, Betty (Paul) Beriault, Helen (John) Medvedev and Bill (Carol) Zander; sister-inlaw Marjorie Zander; brothers-in-law, Joe Daku, Louis Daku, Alfred Sylvestre and Bert Mailhiot.

The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, Redvers, by Rev. Wilfred Calinawan.

Luncheon followed in the church basement, after which interment took place at St. Regis R.C. Parish Cemetery, Wauchope, SK. If friends so desire, donations in Roy’s memory may be made to the St. Regis Parish Cemetery Fund, Box 37, Wauchope, SK, S0C 2P0.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Hall Funeral Services, Redvers.

Andy Girard returned home October 22 after spending a week moose hunting around Hudson Bay area.

On Oct. 23 Edel Cowan accompanied Shelly Cowan to Redvers to attend a dance recital at the dance studio where they watched Ainsley and her class preform their dance lesson.

Faye Walker left on Oct. 25 for Saskatoon to visit her family, daughter Deidra, Jeff Nickel and granddaughters Oliva, Abigail, Claire and Piper. While in Saskatoon Faye attended the STS President meeting on Oct. 26 and in the evening attended the SK Quilters Guild Award Night. On Friday she attended an event where 500 quilts were on display. Then on Saturday Faye and her granddaughters Olivia and Abigail attended a Trunk Show of many different quilted paraphilia. Faye returned home Oct. 29.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Harvey, Bob and Cecille Harrison on the death of their brother Billy Harrison of Whitecourt, AB on Oct. 21 in his 77th year.

Condolences are also extended to all other family members and friends.

There were family members and many friends who attended the come-and-go baby shower in honor of little Oliver, infant son of Cody and Michele Anderson (Carlyle). It was held on Oct. 28 at the farm of his grandparents, Don and Shelly Boutin. Oliver is bound to be the best dressed little fellow in town, as he received lots of useful gifts including many gorgeous outfits.

361 Café held a customer’s appreciation supper on Oct. 28.

Debbie Fuller and Lori Phenix are giving up the management of the café on Oct. 31 after operating it for two years. We will all miss your happy faces and joyful greetings, but we do wish you luck in your next undertaking and adventures.

We will still see Debbie around town, but will now say so long and best wishes to Lori as she will be joining her children, Alexis and Teigan at their new home in Carlyle. Don’t forget us Lori – do keep in touch and we hope to see you around either here in Alida or in Carlyle sometime.

Restaurant serves for the next few days (November 1-3) will be available at the Alida Rink under the management of Margaret Peet. Do join Maggie for

breakfast or for morning coffee or lunch while she provides this service for the community and help support the rink.

The restaurant will re-open on Nov. 4 under the management of Marcia Gervais and will be now known as Marcy’s Diner. Good Luck Marcia and we will be seeing you soon.

Members of the Golden Gate Centre will host an Alzheimer’s Coffee Break on Thursday, November 9 from 2:30-4:30 at the Centre. Please come in and have a coffee and cookie and visit with friends while supporting the Alzheimer’s Society. This event is usually held in September but this year we were kept busy with harvest so it was put on the shelf until now. It’s always better late than never – do hope to see you at the Coffee Break and do remember the motto “Forget Me Not”!

WE DID IT AGAIN – another AWESOME weekend. All spooks, goblins, witches, clowns from the age of 8 to 80 visited our rink again this past weekend and made appearance noted throughout the evenings on Friday and Saturday and again on Sunday afternoon. By the comments we received it was one of our best ever Haunted House. Some of the visitors were very apprehensive to get started down the alley towards the entrance of the “Halls of Terror”. Some even turned around and headed back out to try to build up their courage to try it again. There were lots of screams and hollers and yells as the brave ones would came out holding their sides with much laughter as tears ran down their faces. We had a total of 512 visitors from near and far (including Switzerland, Minot, Manitoba as well as from the local towns in the area). Some swore they’d be back again next time while others said never again.

On Sunday afternoon was our Family Fun Day as well as the Haunted House tours. The children really enjoyed this event as they played the different games on display. One popular game was the cake walk of musical chairs where the lucky one would pick out their favorite cake.

At the end they even held an adult walk which proved to be very exciting and comical. Winners of our lucky draws were as follows: Halloween Cake was Erika Land (Redvers); Candy count – Jacob Dubuc (Alida) with a count of 142; Fairy Garden – Lil Patton (Alida); Towels/

Lotion – Curtis Hughes (Stoughton); Assorted clothing – Marcelle Peterson (Alida); Boo Sign – Melissa Gervais (Alameda); Trivia game and a Reaper Hanger – Melissa Collier (Oxbow/Carnduff reporter).

Much appreciations goes out to all of our spooks (out of towners as well as our locals), volunteers and to all of you who came out to support our Haunted House/Fun Fair event. Your support helps to make our event a success. A BIG BOUGET goes to Shelly Cowan and Dale Anthony if it weren’t for your many hours of assembling the displays, decorations etc. the Haunted House wouldn’t be SOOO SPOOKY and popular. This year the event brought in over $7000 for the Alida Rec. Board – another HUGE SUCCESS. Way to go everyone.
