Below normal precipitation in February and the melt that occurred in mid-February resulted in a reduction in the snowmelt inflow expected at Alameda Reservoir.

This reduction in the forecast decreases the amount of storage WSA is required to create in Alameda Reservoir under the terms of the international water management agreement with the United States. Carlyle & District Lions Club continue community giving with sold-out fundraiser Lynne Bell

The Carlyle & District Lions Club held their 26th Annual Supper, Raffle and Auction Thursday, March 2 at Carlyle Memorial Hall. Since its inception, the event has raised over $500,000 for local causes. Although an exact figure was not available at press time, over $35,000 was raised at this year’s fundraiser, which was a sell-out with 216 people in attendance.

Wade Trippel was the winner of the $1,000 cash prize, while Brian and Michelle Romaniuk won the $1,000 travel voucher.

In its 54-year history, The Carlyle Lions Club has raised over $1,300,000 which has benefited numerous causes and initiatives, including Lions projects: Cavalcade for Diabetes, Journey for Sight, Lions Eye Bank, Sight and Service Foundation and leadership training. as well as sports such as golf and curling. Throughout their history, the Carlyle Lions have also supported the Carlyle Leisure Complex and the Carlyle Memorial Hall as well as the town’s library, golf course and sports arena- in addition to other athletic and cultural causes.

Carlyle Lions Park and campground is the organization’s most well-known project and most recently, Lions members have partnered with Carlyle’s Homespun Committee on a walking path through the park- a legacy project which will celebrate 100 years of Lions Clubs International.

Lions member and event chairperson Wayne Wilson starts preparing the fundraiser in January and says: “The support we receive from businesses, individuals and other organizations is just phenomenal. The proceeds of this event directly benefit the communities in our area. None of the money raised goes into the Lions’ coffers-everything goes into community coffers. But we couldn’t do any of this without the support and generosity of everyone who supports us.”

“It’s a two-way street.”

Evidence of the Lions’ largesse decorated the walls of the Carlyle Memorial Hall as 216 attendees enjoyed a social, a pork and turkey dinner with all the trimmings (prepared by caterers Linda Chapman and Eileen Corrigan) and silent and live auctions, raffles and other contests featuring hundreds of prizes-which raised over $35,000.

Auctioneer Ward Cutler has stated that he has auctioned “Honey, gold eggs and even balloons!” at past Lions fundraisers and this year’s event was no exception, as the hometown hero and world-class auctioneer got top doller for items ranging from concert tickets to coolers and autographed memorabilia from curler Guy Hemming and golfer Graham DeLaet.

A Carlyle Lions tradition was upheld as Lions Club member and beloved baker Dennis Feduk donated a ‘Pie of the Month’ subscription to the auction, which fetched a final price of $325. Feduk also presented Ward Cutler with a Saskatoon pie as a token of thanks for Cutler’s donation of his time and talent to the event.

A visibly-moved Cutler told the crowd: “It’s always good to come home and I can tell you that these pies are worth every penny.”

Anglers reminded to remove ice fishing shelters With ice fishing season winding down, all fishing shelters south of Highway 16 must be removed by March 15 and shelters in areas north of Highway 16 must be removed by March 31.

Ice fishing shelters are abandoned on the ice each year. Shelters not removed pose a danger to boaters, water-skiers and others enjoying our lakes. Pieces wash up on shore and can also cause environmental hazards.

If shelters are not removed, owners may be prosecuted, and the structure and contents may be removed and confiscated.

Litter must also be removed when ice shelters are taken off the ice and structures must be moved to a location above the high water mark. Ice fishing shelters must have the owner’s complete name, address and phone number on the outside in legible letters that are at least 2.5 cm high.

Ice fishing season closes on March

31 in southern and central Saskatchewan and on April 15 in the north. Information about fishing in the province can be found in the Saskatchewan Anglers’ Guide and online at www. saskatchwan.ca/fishing.

Anyone travelling on the ice should take extreme caution. Slush indicates that ice is eroding from above and below at an advanced rate and changing temperatures can cause thermal cracks and pressure ridges, which are indicators of unsafe conditions.

Life After Lymphoma - Pt I

When Manor native Cheyenne (Geysen) Chartrand spoke to The Observer in 2015, she was undergoing treatment for Stage IIA Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and documenting all aspects of her battle with cancer with unflinching honesty on her blog, ‘Dancing With Dr. Hodge’ http://dancingwithdrhodge.wordpress.com.

Since then, the 27-year-old has been given the allclear health-wise and her blog was named one of the Top 10 Cancer Blogs of 2016 by www.ihadcancer.com.

She also has a new job and is also planning to ascend Mount Everest with her husband, Evan Chartrand during a charity climb which will raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.

Chartrand says she started her blog “Selfishly. My blog was for me. It was a way to get out my thoughts and feelings, because I’m not good at talking. But later, one of the things I wanted was for (the blog) to be available to someone else. And even after treatment- with survivorship- I want to let people with cancer know ‘What you’re going through is normal- especially if you’re young.’”

“For me, it’s a way to find people who aren’t near you physically, but whom you can still help.”

Chartrand’s blog was named one of I Had Cancer. com’s Top 10 Blogs of 2016- and she was up against submissions from around the world. Her site was rated ‘Best For: No B.S. Advice on Changing Your Perspective on Your Own Cancer Journey.’

The judges explained: “The I Had Cancer community is centred around our belief that sharing experiences leads to the inevitable sharing of strength...”

“There are thousands of cancer survivors, fighters and supporters all over the world who are actively sharing their stories and doing what they can do to raise awareness, inspiration and encouragement for their community.”

“We decided to host our first-ever blog awards to help get some awareness out there for just a few of these thousands of writers. We received hundreds of submissions. These blogs are picked for the community, by the community, to recognize the crème de la crème of cancer-related blogs of 2016.”

“Cheyenne writes to remind herself and her readers who are going through their own battles of what’s important. She hopes her blog can be used as a tool for others like her to draw inspiration from, and gain a better idea of what to expect when facing cancer.

She writes how her days have been different, what’s stayed the same, and what ‘normal’ means to her now as a survivor.”

Chartrand-a former journalist who now works fulltime as a communications specialist for Ranch Erhlo in Regina- says: “When I was first diagnosed with Hodgkin’s, I said: ‘I’m not going to let this define who I am.’ But that frame of mind lasted about an hour after my first chemo treatment.”

“Before I began my own treatment, I scoured the internet in hopes of finding out more of what to expect. During my treatments, I drew inspiration from people who had successfully completed theirs.”

Chartrand was diagnosed with cancer on November 26, 2014, after months of feeling unwell. Her symptoms started in late July of that year, but by the time she received a definite diagnosis, the cancer had spread, resulting in her illness being categorized as Stage II.

She started intensive chemotherapy immediately and later underwent radiation. She was declared cancer-free in the summer of 2015, but not before suffering severe physical and emotional side effects from her gruelling drug regimen and dealing with some hard questions unique to young cancer patients- among them: future fertility, formidible financial challenges, wig shopping and more.

“My oncologist let me know that my PET scan was clear on June 2, 2015,” says Chartrand. “ But I completed 10 days of radiation after that-it helps prevent recurrence- so I wasn’t actually finished treatment until July 22, 2015. I have scans every six months with the last one scheduled for May 2017.”

“After that, I kind of felt like I had nothing new to say on the blog,” she says. “I was in remission, my hair was a satisfactory length and I was back to nothing new to say. I felt like there was nothing new to tell people related to my cancer diagnosis or treatment, so I really slacked on writing.”

“But something told me to apply for the IHC Blog Awards.”

“So I did and I promptly forgot about it- and by the way, I didn’t tell anybody- not even my husband, Evan.”

“So I was pretty shocked when I was sitting on the couch, casually checking my email when I learned I’d won. And I had to explain it to everyone,” she laughs.

“But it’s one of my proudest accomplishments and I’m so honoured,” adds Chartrand. “When I started the blog, I did it with the intention of helping others.

But it also helped me a lot, too.”

“My blog was a place to get my jumbled thoughts out and it was a saving grace, both before and after treatment. But overall, I just wanted to help other people going through the same situation.”

“I wanted them to know they weren’t alone and that things would eventually get better.”

“This award is such an honour, but I’m also honoured that this humble little venture of mine has reached- and helped- other people with cancer.”

“People helped us out and I want to pay that back.”

Stewart Kerr, Community Outreach Coordinator for Southeast Saskatchewan, is looking for volunteers across the area to assist in times of need.

“We would like to boost the volunteer numbers,” Kerr said of the Southeast.

Volunteers for the Emergency Response Team (ERT) assist at registration centres, which are set up in an emergency. If the community is displaced and in need of food, shelter, and clothing, volunteers are quintessential in ensuring these centres are

set up and operated as intended, including taking care of vulnerable people.

“An ERT responder volunteer is not confined to their own area either,” Kerr explained. “So, there is the opportunity for people across the province to help. Last year with the fires in northern Saskatchewan and Fort McMurray, we had volunteers from all over.”

“Volunteering with the Red Cross provides a great opportunity for people to gain knowledge and skills to help in an emergency.”

Training is required, but is provided by the Red Cross, Kerr says, “If you already have your First Aid, fantastic! If not, then we

do train First Aid on a regular basis. We also give courses on filling out paperwork properly, dealing with people who are emotionally or psychologically devastated, as well as training on Red Cross as a humanitarian organization.”

The R.M. of Tecumseh made a large donation to the Stoughton Legion on Wednesday, March 1. Currently the Legion is the only hall in the community and the R.M. wanted to show their support in the maintenance of the Legion building, but also in support of the Legion branch itself.

The donation, which was earmarked for lighting in the hall and work to the kitchen floor and countertops, was made by the R.M. of Tecumseh for $15,000.

A very generous donation according to Legion secretary Peter Piper, “I went to an R.M. meeting and made a presentation there, I was hoping for $5,000, but they made the decision to give $15,000, which is appreciated.”

“The support of the community of the hall has been really good, it’s now the only hall in town, so people are coming together. We do need ongoing support from the community to help keep us viable.”

In addition to the interior work needed in the hall, the Legion will also need to look at redoing the roof sometime soon.

The power of the brain

The other day I was speaking with someone about the power of the brain. It’s truly an amazing thing, you can convince yourself of nearly anything if you simply believe in it.

What came up was the idea of ghosts and the afterlife. I’ve read accounts of people who have died for a moment on an operating Kelly Running table or in an accident, then Observer Staff brought back to life. Although there are some similarities to what people described, there are also many differences.

Some people report seeing a light, others say they saw themselves from above as they floated away and then were pulled back, while others stated there was simply nothing.

Now, I don’t know if there’s an afterlife. I like to think my soul will go somewhere whether that’s Heaven or you’re reincarnated, whatever it might be, but it seems like believing that something will happen, does happen. So, is it your mind’s last effort of giving you peace as you die, providing the afterlife you imagine there is?

We also talked about ghosts. Although much of the supernatural is no longer believed, ghosts have somehow endured. Whether people have seen them or have felt something off about a room, whatever experience that might be. However, is it the supernatural, or is it your brain playing tricks on you? Is your brain trying to fill in an answer for something and unable to do so then tells you, “ghost,” as a way to explain it? But, how can multiple people experience it? Typically if you hear that there’s a ghost somewhere, then you do some research as to what was seen, so you influence your brain by doing this and almost prep it to see something along those same lines.

The idea of gaslighting for example was first brought to pop culture through the stage play “Gas Light.” In the play, which was also turned into a film, tells the story of a husband who attempts to convince his wife that she is in fact insane by simply manipulating the environment, then insisting that she is wrong when she points out these anomalies.

The gas lights used in the house dim, which the wife states as fact, but the husband keeps insisting that she imagined it all.

The book, which has also been turned into a movie, “The Girl on the Train,” written in 2015 again deals with this theme.

This isn’t just something made up for television or novels either, it’s documented that sociopaths and narcissists frequently use gaslighting tactics to deny something they did. But, it also works on ourselves.

If you tell yourself something enough times, you’re likely to start believing it… in mental training that’s where confidence comes from. You tell yourself positive “I” statements, positive self talk, and before long, you’re feeling more confident in yourself.

So, it’s kind of amazing what a brain can do.

Stellar... and cellar... moments

Yes. It happened. A mistake was made. The wrong envelope was put in the hand of the presenter. Enough of the handwringing and replaying of the moment. Those who thought they’d won the Oscar for Best Picture, and those that actually did were part of a moment that was exhilarating and utterly heartbreaking for those involved--and will forever be Shelley Luedtke part of Academy Awards history.

At the end of a long event a mistake happened, one described as the worst in Oscar history, and it’s all anyone seemed to want to talk about. Makes one wistful for the endless ‘best and worst dressed’ lists of other years.

I can rattle off a list of my mistakes with ease.

Things I wished I’d never said or done. Moments I would like to re-write. They didn’t take place in front of a global audience but they seemed pretty big at the time. But is there anything to be gained by any of us reliving hurt, embarrassment or shame?

In my final year of university a blizzard hit that pretty much shut down the campus. Some classes were held—others weren’t. So with some time to fill before my final class of the day I headed to an empty classroom where I figured the space would provide a quiet, but different place to catch up on some work. Someone else had the same idea; a guy I was in a couple of classes with but who I knew by name only. We struck up a conversation about school, professors, and what prompted us to choose this program, and before long we were having a really good talk where he ended up sharing the series of mistakes that brought him to this university after having started school in another.

I asked him where he was planning on going after getting his degree. He hesitated and then told me he rarely got that question any more. People didn’t

usually ask about his future, they just wanted to talk about his past.

If we look for mistakes we are sure to find them.

But when we do find them, what are we hoping to accomplish? Perhaps we are authentic in our desire that something get corrected or turned right-side up, but I wonder if much of the time we just want to take delight in the misfortune of others. Why show a video repeatedly of someone making an unfortunate mistake? It quickly goes from being a news item and simply becomes amusement at the expense of someone else.

Professionally over the years in different jobs I have done some really unfortunate things. I broke a photocopier, I lost keys to a public building, I messed up on a financial report, and on and on and on. In my personal life the list is lengthy. I have said things I regretted. I have passed up opportunities I should have grabbed. I have had days when I wasn’t a very good spouse, or parent, or friend. But…I have also had countless amazing days on the job doing what I enjoy. And in my personal life…well, there are no words to describe the moments when I did okay as a wife, mother and friend. Moments that can’t be contained to the page. That says it all.

So what’s the best thing you’ve ever done? I hope the list of nominations is long--and that they come to mind far more quickly than any regrets or mistakes you would relegate to the “worst of” list. Because life usually doesn’t get lived in those extremes. Most of what we do falls in between, which is good since it gives us a chance to truly appreciate the stellar moments but also be reminded we can move past the cellar moments.

Maybe we should leave the “best and worst” lists to red carpet fashion, and remember that while people generally don’t remember who the winners and losers are, they remember the encounters and events that taught, inspired and encouraged them.

Imagine being as ready to acknowledge someone at their best as we are to revel in their worst.

That’s my outlook.

I am writing this on Sunday evening and there has been plenty of social media shares about this “big winter storm” that makes me a little nervous.

Not because I don’t like winter, I do, but my heifers were due March 1st and it seems the rule is to pretend to be almost having a calf but hold off until Krystyn Gillies the weather gets yucky. I will hopefully have an update for you next week. Fingers crossed, everything goes well.

We are getting very, very close to finishing our renovation upstairs. I can almost see the finish line!

We spent the day today, Sunday, laying flooring up there and I will tell you what, even though we are saving piles of money doing it ourselves, I often wish I could pay someone to just do it up. We are too cheap for that, if we can do it ourselves, we will.

I decided to do a little “fun, girly décor” in the toddler’s bedroom, so that meant I needed to be crafty. I wish I could say I was one of those Pinterest moms, who scours the internet for DIY projects for kids, but I am not. I have decorated cakes myself, which taste great, but sometimes look like the toddler did it. I also try to do simple crafts with the kid as well, but crafty is not one of my shining qualities.

I’ve been asked many times over the past four years whether I miss work. That would be the paying kind of work where a person shows up for predetermined hours, performs designated tasks and gets a paycheck for the effort. As far as I know there is no retiring from the non-paying-and-it-neverJocelyn Hainsworth seems-to-end kind of work.

The short answer to their question is “no”. I drove to town to work for 31 years – that’s half my lifetime – and I’m not sad to be set free from that. But that’s not the complete story; the last thing I would want people to believe is that I wasn’t grateful for such a good job or that I didn’t enjoy my time with customers and coworkers over the years, because I am and I did. It’s just that life is short and I had other things I wanted to do.

A more in depth answer is that although there were bad days (everyone has them) my years of working for a paycheck were, by far, a happy experience. Conversations with both customers and staff kept things lively; some were happy, and some were very serious and sad but they all built a connection to my community that I still feel very much. The opportunity to bond with my fellow Redversites on such a regular basis is something that I do miss.

The silly and sometimes borderline crazy moments we staff members had behind the scenes are some of the happiest work memories I have: taking a time out from the boredom of sorting fliers to dance to some music (eh Terry?), the challenge I would set myself to get the Coop statements sorted faster than the last week (summer afternoons were pretty long and boring), and then there was that gift thermos of Christmas coffee that will go down in history (eh Rhonda?). Good times.

And, this might sound strange to anyone who hasn’t been a wife and mother in a busy household, but that quiet drive to and from work, even though it was only seven miles, was a precious pocket of solitude I looked forward to every day. You have to have walked a mile in those shoes to appreciate it but trust me, it’s a real thing. And if I hadn’t had my job I wouldn’t have had that; I guess you could call it a perk.

The advantage of a paycheck is obvious. Having a job with a pension plan; likewise.

But yesterday when this prairie storm came howling in I was reminded of one of the best ‘extras’

In her bedroom, I decided, instead of doing a “theme” room that most moms do before their babies are born, I just want to do something simple that can easily be painted over and changed in the future. When I went to the store to pick out colours, I wanted the base to be VERY neutral, a colour that went with everything.

I ended up choosing a very light grey, in a paint that is very durable and washable. It is by the way, but I will save that story for next time. The grey turned out exactly how I pictured it, so now onto my décor plan. I wanted to do a chevron pattern in dark grey and pink along the north wall, giving the room a pop of colour, but keeping it neutral at the same time.

I scoured the internet for some templates and found nothing. I am not going to lie, I didn’t try to hard, so I printed off something I kind of liked, gathered a pencil, an eraser, some painters tape and a level. I started by marking off a level line along the bottom of the window trim and then sectioned out points to intersect, making the pattern even.

Once the points were finished, I started to draw the diagonal lines. The four-foot level turned out to be too long to get into the space along the peaked ceilings. I couldn’t find anything else, so I used the screen out of the window because it was the only thing with a straight edge within reach. I slowly

Actually it wasn’t me who thought of it first. The girlfriend I used to stay with called to say how much she missed having country friends who worked in town, stirring up memories of those happy times.

There are so many levels of being storm-stayed that make the experience special. There’s something about sharing a meal with friends – breaking bread together – that we humans value no matter whether the menu is a simple bowl of soup or a full course meal. made my way across the wall, towards the ceiling/ wall.

After I finished the left side, I made my way to the right side and did the same thing over again.

Satisfied with my work, I began the ridiculously tedious job of taping the lines. I am pretty sure it took me over an hour to meticulously follow the lines I had drawn, making the diagonal chevron pattern almost perfect. I took care to make sure I pressed the tape firmly into place, reducing the risk of paint bleeding underneath.

Bring on the paint! I carefully painted inside the lines with a small roller and after a few hours, did it again. Once everything was dry, my husband and I peeled off the paint but much to our horror, the tape peeled off the light grey paint as well as the drywall primer in some spots and I almost cried.

Thankfully, I was able to patch those spots and move on to taping the pink lines. Again, after two coats, we peeled the tape off and only a tiny amount of light grey paint came off. Insert patching and touch ups and by the end of it, the pattern turned out beautifully.

Every time the toddler comes into the room, she says, “there it is! Nice!” It makes it all feel worth it, even though she is two and had no idea how much time and effort I put into it. I really hope she likes it for a long, long time, so I don’t have to paint up there any time soon!

But when you wrap all of these things up together inside a cozy house with warm-hearted people, when a storm is raging outside while you and everyone you love are safe inside, when to try to get home would have been dangerous or even deadly but instead you find yourself invited to a mini holiday: well, there’s just not a better perk to working outside the home. I hadn’t thought about it until she called, but missing a storm sleepover is a definite downside to being retired.

So, in answer to the question “Do I miss work?” the long answer is “kind of”, especially at a time like this.

In Big Six action, last year’s champions are still in the running as they took out the Redvers Rockets in a series three games to one.

Last week Redvers met Wawota on Tuesday, Feb. 28, Wednesday, March 1, and Sunday, March 5.

Prior to that Wawota had earned a win over Redvers on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

The games were battles as Redvers visited Wawota on Feb. 28, where the Rockets earned a 3-2 victory.

Goals scored came down to two in the first period for Redvers: Jordon Miller was assisted

by Jarvis Ducharme and Koltyn Miller, then a second goal was earned

by Drew Hoff off of an assist by Ducharme.

Wawota answered back with 5.8 seconds left in the first with a goal by Ryan Taylor assisted by Warren Hunter and Dylan Lamontagne.

Heading into the second Redvers led 2-1.

The game was physical, but scores remained the same for the rest of the night leaving Redvers with a 3-2 win over the Flyers.

With a series sitting 1-1, the teams met in Redvers on March 1.

The physical series continued with Game Three going into overtime for Wawota to earn a 4-3 win.

Wawota came out to an early lead with a goal in the first by Rob West assisted by Lucas Hislop and Warren Hunter. The second period saw Redvers come out with two goals within minutes of each other: Jordon Miller earned one with assists by Drew Hoff and Kevin Mann, as well as a goal by Remi Lamotte with assists by Jarvis Ducharme and Drew Hoff.

Wawota answered back in the second period to tie the game up with a goal by Kevin Lincoln assisted by Rob West and Drake Bodie.

Heading into the third the teams were tied 2-2. With a power play Wawota earned goal number three with Drake Bodie finding the net off an assist by Dylan Lamontagne and Victor VanDresar. But, with seconds left and Redvers gaining a power play, Craig Gaudet stepped up and earned a goal off of an assist from Jordon Miller and Drew Hoff.

Moose Mountain Wild’s comeback season in SEMHL Kelly Running Observer Staff

Southeast Saskatchewan has produced over 30 hockey players from within an 80 km radius of Carlyle, from the WHL to CIS to the NHL. There have been many youth that have grown up in pursuit of a dream to play hockey at an elite level, all while inspiring younger generations to pursue their dreams.

For many stepping out onto the ice is a passion and local AA Atom team (otherwise known as a Tier 1 team), the Moose Mountain Wild, was formed to help support advanced development of players.

Playing in the South East Minor Hockey League, the Wild took on teams from Yorkton, Swift Current, Weyburn, Moosomin, and Estevan.

“Our intention was to create a high calibre team,” coach Wade Robertson explained.

“I’ve noticed individual improvements throughout the year in every kid on the team. We haven’t won too many games throughout the year, but I truly believe any team can win this league.”

“There’s a difference of opinion over AA Atom teams, but in my opinion, the higher level of any sport pushes that individual to excel quickly, which is why we went about this team.

It’s also been great for the community here as we’ve had parents and teams driving from other communities that have taken advantage of the amenities in town.”

“Cities tier their hockey from six-yearsold and on, so this is tiering a team for a rural community; it’s a way to create the same opportunities as city kids have.”

There was a lot of work put in bringing back the Wild program to the area.

“It’s been seven years since we’ve had the Wild program in town,” Robertson explained. “It was a lot of work to get it going again. I was even suspended for one month by the SHA over a misunderstanding of the rules. There wasn’t much for guidance; the Peewee AA rules are different than for Atom… it was just a misunderstanding by everybody

involved. It was a big learning curve.”

“But, I spoke with every organization and made sure that if we took three players from here or there that the house team would keep going; so, we made sure everywhere we took kids from had an atom house league still going.”

“I learned a lot and there was a lot of work put into the team, but we turned a bad experience into a good one and I’ve had good dealings with the SHA.” During his one month suspension, Robertson says he got to stand back and watch for the first few games, analyzing for when he was able to return to coaching the team. During this time the assistant coaches stepped in: Jody Jorgensen, Jamie Barnett, and Tyler Fehrenbach.

Robertson added, “The parents were a huge asset this year; the support of the parents and businesses was great.”

The year has been one of development for those on it: Chase Borreson (Redvers), Ty Fehrenbach (Carlyle),

“For me, I was focused on individual development, not the wins and losses; which, I’ve had numerous parents say that they’ve noticed a visible improvement in their kid’s intensity and aggressiveness because of the high calibre hockey.”

In addition to the individual improvements, the team has improved over the year as well. Heading into playoffs, in best of three

series, the Wild recently beat Moosomin in the first round and will now face Yorkton in the next round.

“A huge thanks to everyone involved this year and thank you to the assistance from Randall Smith and Roger Fafard, who ran this program in the past,” Robertson stated.

“Come cheer on the Wild, Sunday [March 12], at 5:30 p.m. for Game Two versus Yorkton!”

The GFK senior boys curling team played in Regionals in Estevan over the past weekend. They won 2 of their 3 games and advance to provincials.

Carlyle Town Council held their regular meeting Thursday, March 1 at the Carlyle Civic Centre. Council’s next regularly-scheduled meeting will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 15 at the Civic Centre.

Tax Assessment Values The total worth of residential and business properties in the Town of Carlyle has increased from $145,398,985 in 2016 to $188,677,680 in 2017. Town Council is currently working to achieve an equitable weighting between business and residential properties regarding the shift in assessment values.

Airport The Airport Commission is ap-

plying for funding to cover the cost of painting the lines and numbers on the runway.

Land Purchase Funding Council passed Bylaw 2017-04 which will allow the town to borrow $700,000 by way of debenture.

These funds will be used to purchase land.

New Administrator Natalie Miller will replace retiring Town of Carlyle Administrator, Huguette Lutz. Miller will take up her new position May 1, 2017.

Redcoat Rebels bring home silver from Moose Jaw Submitted by the Redcoat Rebels Volleyball Club The Rebels had a tough start Saturday, March 4, in Moose Jaw ending the day with two wins versus Prairie VC and QCVC Blackout, but losing to QCVC Royals and the Oxbow Black Knights, which ended the day third in Pool B. The Rebels were determined to turn it around and came out strong on Sunday. In a crossover match versus Esterhazy (2nd in Pool B), the Rebels came out on fire and won in two sets straight advancing them to the semi finals in a rematch with Oxbow (1st in Pool B).

After losing to Oxbow in the previous pool play the Rebels turned it around and quickly came out on top again winning both sets 25-16 and 25-12. They advanced to the gold medal game against the undefeated Moose Jaw Element. The game was a hard fought battle of three sets:25-16, 24-26, and 13-15.

Earning a silver medal the Rebels were happy with their play overall. This weekend the Rebels will be competing in the QCVC tournament in Regina.

Carlyle District Lions 26th Annual Fundraiser The Carlyle District Lions Club held their 26th annual supper, raffle and auction Thursday, March 2 at the Carlyle Memorial Hall. Since its inception, the event has raised over a half million dollars for local causes. Over 200 people attended this year’s sold-out event, with over $35,000 raised for area causes

Lions members Pat Anderson and Myrla Holland, two of the many volunteers who have made the community fundraiser a success for over a quarter of a century.

World champion auctioneer Ward Cutler once again donated his time and talent to the Carlyle District Lions Club’s annual fundraiser. This is the 22nd year that Cutler-who grew up in Carlyle- has returned to support the event.

Weekly RCMP report Lynne Bell

The Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to several files from Friday, Feb. 24 to Thursday, March 2.

911 Members responded to two 911 calls during this period. One call reported a disturbance at a residence in the Kisbey area, which was resolved before police arrived. The second call reported a situation in which both the RCMP and EMS were required.

Assault An individual struck several bystanders and damaged several vehicles at a Carlyle-area gas station. This person was arrested by RCMP and held in custody.

An assault in the Carlyle area which was reported to RCMP by the Ministry of Social Services is currently under investigation.

Police are investigation an assault which occurred in the Carlyle area.

Assistance The Carlyle RCMP detachment assisted both the Estevan Police Service and the Moose Jaw Police Service regarding warrants.

In Carlyle, members assisted an individual in obtaining their property from another individual.

Alcohol-related offences In the Kenosee Lake area, an intoxicated individual was found to be unlawfully in a dwelling. This person was arrested and remanded in court.

In Carlyle, an individual was fined $360 for having open liquor in a vehicle.

Break and enter A break-in at the Wawota Forum is believed to be linked to several arena break-ins in the area. Recently, break-ins have occurred at the Broadview, Redvers and Whitewood rinks.

A break in at a cottage in the Carlyle area is still under investigation by RCMP. A reported break-in in Arcola was found to be an alarm going off in error.

Breach of probation Police are currently investigating a possible breach of probation order in the Manor area.

Fire Members responded to a grass fire near Hwy 9 in the Carlyle area.

RCMP assisted at a fire north of Arcola.

Fraud Members are currently investigating a fraud in the Manor area.

Harassing communications RCMP are investigating a report of harassing communications in the Carlyle area.

Mental Health Act Members dealt with several files under the Mental Health Act during this week.

Mischief In Redvers, a white pickup truck was smashed and burned.

This matter is still under investigation by the RCMP. A suspicious individual was reported in Carlyle. Members made patrols.

Sexual assault Police are currently investigating a sexual assault.

Theft A theft of under $5,000 in the Redvers area was investigated by the RCMP. The complainant did not wish to lay charges.

In Kenosee Lake, a theft of gasoline is under investigation by RCMP. A theft of a cellphone and a credit card at a detachment-area high school is under investigation by RCMP. In Manor, a possible theft of mail is currently under investigation.

A reported theft in Manor proved to be unfounded, as police deemed this to be a civil matter.

Traffic offences A motorist who was prohibited from driving was charged as they were found driving on Hwy 9.

Two separate reports of possibly-impaired drivers on Hwy 13 near Carlyle were reported to the RCMP detachment. In both cases, members located the motorists and found that they were fatigued, rather than intoxicated.

Carlyle RCMP Staff Sgt. Darren Simons says: “We do not mind these calls at all. Often, just being stopped by police will serve as a wake-up call to these drivers in more ways than one.

We all need to work together to ensure our highways are as safe as we can make them.”

Police fined three motorists $580 each for driving unregistered vehicles. “Our traffic vehicles have automatic licence plate readers,” says Staff Sgt. Darren Simons. “These devices read licences automatically, so the camera sees what we can’t see- including if the vehicle is registered.”

RCMP members issued 25 speeding tickets, with fines reaching $476. Three motorists were fined $280 each for using cellphones while driving. Police also issued tickets for seatbelt violations, driving without a licence, failure to stop at a posted stop sign and other matters during the week.

In Redvers, members responded to the report of an erratic driver. The driver has been identified and this matter is still under investigation.

Uttering threats A report of uttering threats from the Manor area was deemed to be unfounded by RCMP members.

GRAVEL HAULING TENDERS The Rural Municipality of Storthoaks No. 31 is accepting tenders for the hauling of a minimum of 15,000 yards of crushed gravel within the municipality. Gravel hauling is to be completed by July 1 st , 2017 (weather permitting). Please state separate costs for the loading of crushed gravel, hauling of crushed gravel, loading of pit run, hauling of crushed gravel and pit run on private lanes and yard sites. The awarded tender must be available for spot gravelling throughout the year with minimal notice.

LOWEST OR ANY TENDER MAY NOT NECESSARILY BE ACCEPTED. Tenders for the service of gravel hauling as stated above will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 17 th, 2017.

Off to Regionals The GFK Senior Boys’ Curling Team won Districts last week in an extra end and are heading off to Regionals on Fri. / Sat. March 3rd and 4th. The Provincials are slated for Fri. / Sat. March 10th and 11th.

Basketball season is well underway at GFK and both junior and senior teams have been busy with practices, exhibition games, and tournaments. Just last week, the Junior Boys’ Basketball Team defeated Fillmore and Redvers. GFK senior basketball will be hosting Conference Basketball at the GFK gym on Saturday, March 11th. Important dates: Junior Basketball Districts – Thursday, March 9th, Senior Basketball Conferences – Saturday, March 11th at GFK, Regionals – Fri. / Sat. March 17/18, Provincials (HOOPLA) – Thursday, Friday, Saturday, March 23/24/25.

GFK badminton has started. Both junior

From its humble beginnings as a two-day French-language event in 1983, Montreal’s Just for Laughs festival has evolved into the world’s biggest comedy-centric celebration.

This Canadian success story can be told today thanks to Just for Laughs founder Gilbert Rozon and his simple, yet ambitious mission: rendre les gens heureux—“make people happy.”

Just for Laughs—whose upcoming 35th edition coincides with both Canada’s 150th and Montreal’s 375th anniversary—takes Montreal by storm every July for three jampacked weeks of hilarious hijinks. Each year, an average of 1.35 million comedy lovers from around the world come to Montreal to experience this gigantic celebration of laughter. The festival’s ever-growing popularity has led to the creation of satellite events across Canada and abroad, such as JFL42 in Toronto, JFL Northwest in Vancouver, and Just for Laughs London in the United Kingdom. There’s even a Just for Laughs offshoot Down Under that takes place in September at the legendary Sydney Opera House—more than 16,000 kilometres away from the Montreal theatre that welcomed the first-ever Festival Juste pour rire back in 1983.

Over the years, a number of household names—Roseanne Barr, Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart and Jim Carrey, to name a few—took their first steps in the comedy world on a Just for Laughs stage. The festival is known as a talent incubator of sorts and includes an industry component, Comedy Pro, aiming to help upand-comers catch their big break. Another way Just for Laughs shows its support for the next generation of performers is through its Zoofest event, which debuted in 2009 and features a multi-disciplinary lineup of offbeat talent that begs to be discovered.

In addition to its signature festivals, Just for Laughs has created several television shows in both of Canada’s official languages. Outside of its home country, however, the organization is perhaps best known for its Gags. This iconic series of candid-camera prank shorts with absolutely no dialogue has made millions of viewers laugh in more than 130 countries and counting. As Just for Laughs continues to fulfill its founder’s mission both at home and abroad, its resounding success reminds us that comedy is as universal as laughter is contagious.

CANADA’S FILIPINO COMMUNITY Though their presence in Canada was small until the late twentieth century, Filipino Canadians now represent one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the country in addition to being the third-largest Asian-Canadian community. The 2011 National Household Survey found that 662,600 Canadians have some degree of Filipino heritage. Among the better-known Filipino Canadians in popular culture are singer-songwriter Emm Gryner, graphic novelist J. Torres, NHL defenseman Mathew Dumba, actress Shay Mitchell, and politician Mable Elmore. Filipino Canadians have made (and continue to make) countless contributions to every level of Canada’s society and culture, from politics and business to sports and the arts.

The very first Filipino immigrants—about 700 individuals—arrived in Canada during the first half of the 20th century. It wasn’t until the 1960s, however, that the influx of this ethnic group began to pick up, with a marked increase occurring a decade later. This demographic spike coincided with the 1972 declaration of martial law made by Ferdinand Marcos, the president of the Philippines at the time, and the resulting turmoil. Over the next two decades, the number of Filipino Canadians rose to over 200,000.

The vast majority of Filipinos who choose to put down their roots in Canada are English-speakers with highly marketable skills and a solid education. These factors go a long way in helping them quickly adapt to the social and cultural realities of life in their new home. About 50 per cent of the community resides in Ontario, half of which are located in the Greater Toronto Area. Substantial populations are also found in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Montreal, Calgary and Edmonton. The Filipino community in Canada has over a thousand associations spread out across the country as well as a number of media outlets, including five newspapers in Toronto and four in Vancouver.

Congratulations and Best wishes to Kailey Betts and Jacklyn Lievaart who were married Feb. 20 in Punta Cana, Dominica. The young couple will be making their home near Estevan.

Leonard and Lil Patton visited with Glennis Peterson on Feb. 24. She is staying with her daughter Donna McDonald at Lang while recovering from her surgery. They report that Glennie is doing fine.

Gray and Edel Cowan were in Estevan on Wednesday, March 1 where both had medical appointments, Edel with the denturist and Gray at St Joseph’s Hospital.

Gary and Brenda Junk left on Mar. b2 to spend some time visiting with family – Jody, Jill, Jaxon, Jace, Kara and Morgan in Sylvan Lake, returning home Mar. 7.

Hip hip hooray – The Brier is now on this week with finals on the weekend – oh joy of watching the great curling games. It is my favorite sport to watch (then it’s football, CFL that is). Team Saskatchewan is doing fairly well so far, so guess will keep cheering for them, although I do like Team Manitoba, Team Canada (Koe) and Team NFL (Gushu) – I do think anyone of these four teams would represent our country well at the Worlds Curling. Good luck to all the curlers.

Well did March come in as a Lion or Lamb? I believe it was lion cubs, good mixture of both cool and nice weather. However looks like we are going to receive some more winterlike weather didn’t really want more snow but then would sooner have snow than rain that turns to ice.

Guess we have to take what we’re given and hope that the month ends like a lamb – the days will pass by quickly as they always seem to do.

It is a busy week for us here at Alida getting ready for Act One Productions 25th performance.

OBITUARIES Roseina Schrader 1920 - 2017 Roseina Schrader passed away at Newhope Pioneer Lodge, Stoughton, SK on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at the age of 96 years.

Roseina’s memory will be forever cherished by her daughters, Marlene (Bob) Craig, Joyce (Bob) Skuce, Donna (Pat) Slater and Sheila (Rob) Singleton, as well as her many beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will also be lovingly remembered by her brother Bill (Betty) Curtis and sister Eva Schrader; sisters-in-law, Yvette Long, Betty (Albert) Nelson and Elaine Curtis, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Roseina was predeceased by her parents, William and Ada Curtis; husband Corwin Schrader; son Larry Schrader in infancy; grandson Curtis Slater; siblings, Gertrude, Irene, Dennis and Mel; parents-in-law, Albert and Freeda Schrader, and her special in-laws.

Roseina’s faith in God never wavered and that faith seen her through the storms of life. Her devotion to the Lord is the example she set, not only for her family, but for everyone.

She always had a scripture to share and made sure we all knew who Jesus was and is.

Roseina’s treasured and well worn Bible was her guide for life and she studied it faithfully, reading cover to cover 17 times and memorizing countless verses.

She loved everyone and everyone loved her. She had a very forgiving heart and could never stay angry. She believed in saying sorry first no matter what the situation.

On August 27, 1946 she married Corwin Schrader. A very devoted wife, she worked alongside him for much of her life while also caring for their four daughters. She considered being a wife and mother to be the greatest calling for a woman and she excelled at it - baking, cooking, cleaning, teaching and loving her beloved family. She truly was an angel here on earth. Her daughters feel so grateful to have been blessed with such an awesome mom.

Roseina also loved to knit and crochet, making beautiful doilies, doll clothes and a special sweater set for each new grandchild which will forever be a special keepsake. She loved to rock and sing to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had a special touch with the babies and they brought great joy to her as she loved them dearly.

Roseina will surely be missed by all who knew and loved her. Heaven gained a very special angel on February 8th. We will all miss her so very much but also celebrate her beautiful life. Her life was lived with the goal of spending eternity with the Lord and we rejoice in that.

We love you mom, grandma and GG-Ma. A Funeral Service was held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Stoughton Apostolic Church with Pastor Ken Stoddard officiating. Interment followed at the Heward Cemetery, Heward, SK, after which a luncheon was held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Stoughton.

If friends so desire, donations in Roseina’s memory may be made to the Stoughton Apostolic Church, Box 122, Stoughton, SK, S0G 4T0 or the Newhope Lodge Activity Fund, Box 38, Stoughton, SK, S0G 4T0.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Hall Funeral Services, Estevan.

Thank You The family of Roseina Schrader would like to thank all our family and friends from near and far who attended mom’s funeral, all those who participated in it and those who helped with the preparations. It was a beautiful service for mom.

Thank you also to Stoughton Newhope Pioneer Lodge for your tender loving care given to mom and your attentiveness towards her family.

Thank you all for the many lovely cards, words of condolence, flowers, donations, food and phone calls. We appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Kelly and Wendy Greenbank, Mark and Shawna Cudmore, Kerr and Kellyn enjoyed a holiday in Florida recently.

Dennis and Norma Lamontagne spent several days visiting with family in Saskatchewan and Alberta.

On Feb. 10 they traveled to Swift Current where they spent time with Dennis and Lea before going to Calgary where they spent a week with daughters, Michele and Rennee and their families. On their way home they had a brief stop over in Swift current before returning home on the 20th.

Garth and Tanya Brisbois spent several days on

a vacation in the Dominican Republic.

Sympathy to Florence Metz and family and Dale and Jan Metz and family on the passing of Larry Metz.

Larry passed away in Regina on Feb. 25 at the age of 74 years. He was an active sportsman, playing and coaching baseball and hockey. He worked for the city of Regina for 27 years. At Larry’s request there wasn’t a funeral service and interment will be held at a later date.

By Calvin Daniels Maybe I’ve been writing about the field of agriculture too long.

At least it seems that way when I begin reading stories in the farm press suggesting the sector is slipping toward what some are suggesting are the worst of times.

Excuse me, but this is hardly a new lament.

I have been pounding out this weekly look at agriculture for three decades now. I have seen the days of farmgate blockades to thwart the auction hammer coming down on foreclosure sales. There have been tractor parades on highways to slow traffic to draw attention to the plight of farmers. There have been mass rallies in Regina and Ottawa to grab the ear of politicians in tough times of the not so distant past.

So when we talk of current concerns, they are no doubt worrisome, the sector has been here before.

The problem is an old one. Agricultural commodities by nature work on a supply-anddemand system. When supplies are tight and demand high, farmers do well.

Look back just a few years to China in the midst of an unprecedented economic boom and hungry for all commodities, farm products included, and prices jumped, many to record highs.

But everyone associated with farming has to realize what goes up, will inevitably come down.

The reasons are twofold.

The first is because farmers are very good at producing whether it’s beef, cabbages or canola. When prices rise farmers react by increasing production to capture the good returns.

But, in so doing, they can often glut a market, which has buyers lowering prices because they know they can find product.

And then there is the demand side.

China carried the commodity world on its back for a number of years, but the expectation they could maintain their growth numbers

But dollar amounts aside the situation is still one based on the old rules of supply and demand.

Of course the current clouds over the sector are tempered by those who look down the road to the potential of farming; the grow-

Three of my four weekly hours at the Post Office are on Saturday morning. After opening up, my next job was to tune in to CBC and the Vinyl Café with Stuart McLean. This has been on going for many years. Just recently Stuart passed away with melanoma at the age of 68 years. How I miss him!

But what wonderful memories we have with all of the great stories he shared with us.

Isn’t it wonderful, especially with all of the negativity in the world to see the great response Saskatchewan gave to the Telemiracle last weekend? Over 5 million dollars raised and that was close to the record in 2012. This was the 41st Telemiracle which over the years has raised over 100 million dollars. So many books, so little time. I usually read around 50 books each year.

However with T.V. programming not to my liking, I have read 11 books in January and nine in February. One of my favourite books that I read was , “This Was A Man” by Jeffrey Archer. It was the final book in the Clifton series. Jeffrey Archer has written so many good books, “Kane And Abel” and “First among Equals” being two of my favourites.

You can always expect can enjoyable book from this author.
