Arcola’s Creative Tables for Cancer fundraiser was once again a sold-out success, as over 400 diners packed Prairie Place Hall for an evening of fun and philanthropy. This year, the 10th annual evening of inspiration benefitted the “Look Good Feel Better” program, the Moose Mountain Medical Recruitment Committee and nine-year-old guest speaker Payton Sernick’s project supporting the Jim Pattison’s Children’s Hospital Foundation in Saskatoon. Event founder Darlene Olsen of Arcola (pictured here at this year’s event) says: “Thank you to everyone - and there are so many of you to thank. When all of us work together, miracles can happen. Thank you all.”

Businesses, organizations and individuals once again generously donated to the event, which in just 10 years, has raised well over $400,000 for Look Good Feel Better and more recently, the Moose Mountain Medical Recruitment Committee.

Michelle Pilon, Look Good Feel Better’s Western Regional Manager, made the trip from Calgary for this year’s event and told the crowd: “This is one of the best events I’ve ever been to. It’s off the charts; the creativity is off the charts. It’s a beautiful way to bring friends, family and community together and I can’t wait to share it with my colleagues.”

“Thank you for supporting our charity. We couldn’t do what we do without volunteers and funding.”

Sunita Prasad of the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation in

Mississauga, Ontario agreed, adding: “Of every dollar donated to the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation - which donates the money back to Look Good Feel Better - 96 cents goes to the charity, with only four cents of every dollar to administration.” “ Thank you and congratulations on 10 amazing years of Creative Tables in Arcola!”

This year, two guest speakers touched attendees with their stories of battling cancer.

Thirty-seven-year old Charmaine Wudrick of Radville made her first visit to Creative Tables with a group of girlfriends for the fundraiser’s 10th edition.

The mother of two was diagnosed with breast cancer, underwent a double mastectomy and underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy. She met Olsen at Regina’s Allan Blair Cancer Center while participating in a Look Good Feel Better workshop.

“Going through cancer is a personal journey that most women go through alone,” said

Wudrick. “ I was fortunate enough to have an army of girlfriends rally around me and accompany me to each and every appointment, chemo round and surgery date.”

“But what I mean when I say that most women who go through cancer alone is that our besties aren’t diagnosed with us. They can’t offer advice because they haven’t gone through loss of hair, eyebrows, eyelashes or how to dress for our new shape.”

“When we don’t know something we usually turn to our mother figures for advice and help,” explained Wudrick. “Darlene and the Look Good Feel Better group do this every month for a group of women diagnosed with cancer and undergoing treatments. She is the mother of all mother advisors and brings all her little peeps together.”

“I can assure you, we all left Look Good Feel Better with a little more sparkle than we went in with,” concluded Wudrick. “And many of us have built lasting friendships far stronger

Nine-year-old keynote speaker Payton Sernick of Estevan told the capacity crowd: “Cancer is a disease that can happen to anyone even kids.’

Payton - assisted by her seven-year-old brother, Beckham and her mother Andrea gave a slideshow chronicling her cancer journey, which began when she was in grade one, when she was diagnosed with both Stage 4 leukemia and Stage 4 lymphoma.

“I was six-years-old and I had stomach pains a lot of the time and leg pain in my right leg,” she explained. “I had hundreds of little tumours and three major ones.”

After over 200 days spent in hospitals - including a stay in Regina General where she spent 40 days in one room without leaving - Payton earned 1,280 “Beads of Courage.”

A large container of necklaces made of glass beads - each colour representing a different medical procedure - and her stuffed monkey, Bananas were reminders of Payton’s years of treatment.

“My monkey Bananas went to school for me. I didn’t go to school for me,” she said. “I did school in the hospital when I could. I did my music class with Facetime and sometime it worked and sometimes it didn’t.”

“Each bead represents something I did,” she said. “A treatment or a scan or something...”

“And I am one of the reasons Saskatchewan needs a children’s hospital.”

As a result of her experience, Payton is now a Junior Ambassador for the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan and with her family, has already raised over $35,000 for the cause – and this year, Creative Tables

White Bear First Nations was home to a celebration at the Post-Secondary School where 11 individuals graduated from a program ran by Brass Enterprise.

Annie Brass with Brass Enterprise began offering programming in 2005, but Brass has been working with people in this capacity since 2003. Although

she is based mostly in Saskatchewan “Every year we challenge ourselves to find new and helpful ways that will inspire people on their healing paths,” the program is described on their website: www. brassenterprise.com.

The four-week program on Life Skills which was run in White Bear focused on communication skills, writing resumes, prepping for interviews, dressing for success, and focusing on the skills they already have and building on them.

Brass was very proud of those that participated saying, “I’d like to recognize Gaylene Sparvier and Germain Desnomie for facilitating a great program.”

“The program focused on building skills and expanding on the qualities people already had as individuals. The program was a big success.”

“The group members really opened up and got to a place where they could really learn and see the path they want to go on. Cross Country Congratulations to the GFK Cross Country Team who competed at the Provincial Meet in Turtleford on the weekend. In races of up to 140 athletes, Taylor Sharp finished 65th in the midget girls’ category, Jonah Dyck 61st and Nathan Simons finished 31st in the midget boys’ category, and Ethan Dyck finished 69th, Brayden Hill finished 50th, and Tucker Sharp finished 12th in the junior boys’ category. They all conquered “Heart Attack Hill” and made their school proud.

Also, congratulations to the junior cross country runners who competed at Districts in Rocanville last week. In the grade 7 girls’ category, Kerri Lachapelle finished 7th and Kadence Desrosiers finished 3rd. In the grade 7 boys’ category, Mitch Himmelspach finished 3rd. Way to go cross country runners!

“Carol:” A unique new take on the classic tale for Dickens Festival Kelly Running Observer Staff

Every year Cornerstone Theatre brings a unique version of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” to the stage. The musical production showcases the talented local thespians each year and this year they’re bringing a completely original production – including music – to the stage with “Carol.”

For Jesse Twietmeyer – a long time member of Cornerstone Theatre, ideas for a revamped version of the story had been coming to him over the years, but logistically he wasn’t sure how to make it come to life.

“The idea for this particular adaptation came to me about three years ago,” Twietmeyer explained. “I had a lot of ideas stewing, but about three years ago it started coming together.”

“It was very specific and I finally realized the only way it would work was to make the music

entirely original to fit the story I wanted to tell.”

With that, he began writing a week after the 2016 production concluded and enlisted the help of his mom, Dianne Twietmeyer, in writing the music.

“Mom is an excellent song writer, so she came up with the music,” Jesse stated. “My sister Sam contributed to the lyrics – while she was in Ireland – and Clay Johnstone wrote one song.”

Dianne added, “They’re catchy tunes and the cast loved the songs when we first played them for the cast.

They’re instantly familiar, so even though they’re original songs, the audience will feel like they know them.”

She explained that the genres throughout the production ranges including Latin, a hoedown, rock and roll, pop, blues, jazz, and even old style Broadway/Vaudville; so, there’s something for everyone.

The playwright describes the play as “a

modernized version that takes place on Wall Street and the Scrooge character is named Jonathan Anderson and he’s a big Wall Street guy. The purpose of the story is to look into the events of his life that led a person to make the decisions he made. There’s a focus on his relationship with his sister and nephew and how those elements affected the way he treats people and the way he views the world.”

Efforts to learn the music and script started earlier than usual, as the entire production is original. They’ve been learning the music since September and are just beginning rehearsals with the script.

“We’ve got a really great group here and they’re really into the new music,” Dianne added.

“Everyone’s been really supportive,” Naomi Twietmeyer, Jesse’s wife, added.

A unique new take on the annual Dickens Festival play is being brought to the stage this year with an original script and original music. Set in New York City, a Wall Street mogul is the focus of this year’s production. The script was written by Jesse Twietmeyer, while his mom, Dianne Twietmeyer, and sister, Sam Twietmeyer, contributed to the musical stylings along with Clay Johnstone who wrote one song for the production. Tickets are on sale now at Fengche Flowers.

Flowers on Main Street in Carlyle. The production will be held on Friday, Dec. 1, and Saturday, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m., as well as a matinee on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m.

Locals are encouraged to reserve tickets for the Friday and Sunday productions if it works for

their schedule in order to save seats for those coming in from out of town.

Stoughton Co-op celebrated new features at Grand Opening

The Stoughton Co-op hosted a Grand Opening on Wednesday, Oct. 11, with a BBQ and ribbon cutting.

Deric Reaney – General Manager – explained that there’s been a lot of work put into the C-Store and Card Lock: “We are celebrating the expansion of the Card Lock today, our C-Store, and all of the paving that was done.”

“Over the past few years we’ve been building up to this and it’s been a great opportunity for us. We’re excited to be able to do this for this community and for the surrounding area.”

Reaney went on to say, “We’ve received nothing but compliments. While we were putting everything in people were watching and excited, and once it was all opened up we’ve received a stream of positive comments and compliments.”

The Grand Opening BBQ was a fundraiser for the Stoughton Legion.

“It’s the only large hall in town now and it’s important to support it,” Reaney stated.

This is the second fundraiser that Stoughton Co-op participated in to raise funds for the Stoughton Legion. Last month they participated in Co-op’s Fuel Good Day and donated 5 cents/litre of fuel sold to the Stoughton Legion for a total of $375 from the day.

Weekly RCMP report Lynne Bell

The Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to several calls and requests for service between Thursday, Oct. 5 and Thursday, Oct. 12.

This week, members dealt with someone parked illegally near Carlyle Elementary School. Staff Sgt. Darren Simons of the Carlyle RCMP detach-

ment says “The reason we’re concerned about people obeying the parking signs elementary schools is that many of hese young children are shorter than a vehicle and as a result, are often very difficult to see.”

“We request that everyone respect the no parking zones and area in front of the elementary school for this reason.

We don’t want to have to enforce these areas by issuing tickets, but if we do, it’s because we have no choice.”

which the caller hung up. Police made several attempts to reach the caller, including leaving a voicemail message.

One call made to 911 was determined to have been made by a fiveyear-old who was playing with the phone.

Two false alarms originated from the same location.

Alcohol-related offences Carlyle RCMP charged two impaired drivers within two days on Hwy 9 near Carlyle.

While both motorists were driving with blood alcohol levels over the legal limit, one was found to be driving with blood alcohol levels two times over the legal limit.

Patrols were made by police after Carlyle RCMP received reports of intoxicated people in a Carlyle area residence.

Animal calls Carlyle RCMP received several calls regarding numerous cats running loose on Hwy 48 near Wawota. “Unfortunately, we received these calls the day after this happened,” says Staff Sgt. Simons. “The time delay made it too late for us to be of any assistance and we do not monitor social media. If anyone has anything to report to the RCMP, please call us immediately.”

RCMP received calls reporting cattle on area highways this week.

Arson The matter of a stolen truck which was burned on the drive-in road north of Carlyle is still under investigation

by Carlyle RCMP. Assault

An assault in which a youth allegedly assaulted their parents is still under investigation.

An assault which allegedly occurred as the result of the theft of a phone is still under imvestigation.

An assault in which an adult was alleged to have grabbed a teenager is still under investigation.

Assistance Carlyle RCMP were called by local EMS to assist with a possible Mental Health Act call in Redvers.

Breach of conditions/Failure to comply An individual was arrested and later released after being warned to comply with their release conditions.

RCMP received a report of an individual who allegedly failed to comply with their probation order. Upon investigation, this report was deemed to be unfounded by police.

Break and enter A break-in at a residence in Manor is still under investigation by Carlyle RCMP. A break-in at a building in Manor remains unsolved.

A vehicle at Kenosee Lake was broken into.

A break-in at a Carlyle-area cabin is still under investigation.

Child welfare Carlyle RCMP are currently conducting a child welfare investigation in the detachment area.

Firearms Firearms and hunting knives were stolen from a motor vehicle in Carlyle.

A report of firearms being discharged near Carlyle remains unsolved.

Mischief Police made patrols after receiving reports of several intoxicated people in the Carlyle area.

Property damage RCMP are investigating after property was damaged at the White Bear Lake Golf course.

Stolen property An individual in Carlyle found stolen property in their unlocked vehicle.

Theft Two vehicles - one stolen in Carlyle and one at Kenosee Lake were both recovered by RCMP, after both were reported as stolen earlier this week. Staff Sgt. Simons of the Carlyle RCMP detachment says: “Many of the vehicles that are stolen in our area are due in part to individuals not locking them or leaving the keys in them. Even keeping your vehicle in your garage and your keys elsewhere in your garage can be an invitation to theft.

The best thing to do is secure your garage, lock your vehicle in your garage, and keep your keys somewhere else entirely.

Thinking this way will help you secure your property effectively and will also act as a deterrent for thieves. Criminals are opportunisitc, but they’re also basically lazy. Don’t make it easy for them and don’t make yourself an easy target.

The more difficult you make it for them; the more difficult you make it for them.”

An iPad was stolen

and the owner’s banking information was accessed as a result.

RCMP are still investigating and Staff Sgt. Simons reminds people not to share their banking information and/or passwords.

A theft in Redvers is currently under investigation.

Ten dollars was stolen from an unlocked vehicle in Carlyle.

Traffic offences/Collisions Carlyle RCMP responded to the report of a dangerous driver near Forget. Police passed the information on to Fillmore and Weyburn RCMP detachments, but the driver and vehicle were not located.

RCMP have responded to several collisions this week, many of which are due to deer crossing roadways. Staff Sgt. Simons says: “Deer are a contributing factor to a lot of collisions right now, so it’s up to all of us to be extra-vigilant on our roadways.”

A motorist in Arcola was fined for using a cellphone while driving.

A motorist received a warning from the RCMP for driving with undue care and attention.

Two motorists were fined $580 each for operating uninsured motor vehicles.

Carlyle RCMP issued several speeding tickets this week, with fines reaching $188.

Uttering threats An incidence of an individual in the Carlyle area uttering threats is still under investigation

by RCMP.

Right now it is mostly cribbage and darts but if anyone is interested in any other board games that can be arranged.

We are working on renovating the bathroom in the Legion hut.

The building is old and some areas are in need of work. This work is done by volunteers and we hope to have it completed by Christmas.

I guess it’s that time of year… the one where I’ve got myself being pulled into a few different directions that I almost forgot to write my column this week. Luckily Lynne asked me where it was hiding as she looked over my other stories for me… it was that moment I realized I hadn’t had my coffee yet.

Kelly Running I know caffeine is addictObserver Staff ive and that if I go without it for a couple of days I tend to have a headache… but, it’s a vice I don’t mind… there’s both benefits to drinking coffee and problems that come with it.

Coffee is a traditional coming together for people, there’s cafés around the world and socializing over a cup of coffee is a big deal. In fact, in university I took a couple of basic Arabic lessons that a grad student was putting on as part of his work.

One of the first phrases that he taught us after general greetings was “Tishrab qahwa?” which translated is along the lines of “Would you like to drink coffee?”

The word “coffee” that we use comes from Arabic in fact, which translates to “wine of the bean.”

I started looking into coffee a little bit and here’s a surprising fact I came across. Coffee is the second most valuable, traded commodity in the world! It trails behind the number one – petroleum. Related to this apparently people around the world consumes nearly 2.25 billion cups of coffee every day.

Also, my mind was blown when I discovered that coffee beans are not actually beans… it’s like when I found out peanuts aren’t nuts. Coffee beans are in fact fruit pits from a coffee fruit called a cherry; they are called beans, however, because of their resemblance to true beans. Also, since I brought up peanuts, they’re in fact a legume and not a tree nut.

When I was younger I always thought coffee smelled so good, but I hated the taste of it. In fact learning to drink coffee started with half-coffee and half-hot chocolate, then coffee with cream and sugar, slowly I weaned myself off of the sugar, and on occasion I still take it with cream, but I’m good to go with a cup of black coffee. I discovered through researching coffee a little bit though that coffee doesn’t taste the same because as we’re “swallowing the drink it sends a burst of aroma up the back of the nose from inside the mouth, activating a ‘second sense of smell,’ in the brain that is less receptive to the flavour, causing a completely different and less satisfying sensation,” ~Why does coffee never taste as good as it smells, Nick Collins, The Telegraph.

Additionally, without its smell, coffee would be sour/bitter tasting due to the organic acids within it… the flavour will change slightly by simply taking a sip while holding your nose and cutting off the primary scent leaving just the secondary scent for your tastes to go by.

Studies also found that caffeinated coffee improves blood flow… so, there’s lots of people that are now drinking it before sporting events or competitions because blood carries oxygen throughout the system and making your body more efficient in carrying oxygen means there is more for it to be used by the body.

Additionally caffeine in the evening can delay the brain from releasing melatonin and also interrupting our circadian rhythm by 40 minutes… melatonin being a hormone your body releases to control your sleep and wake cycles; circadian rhythm – your physiological 24-hour clock.

Sincerely and uniquely yours It would be a dream job for me. Yes, I wanted to be a journalist on Parliament Hill or the producer of a talk show, but in my heart of hearts the dream would have been to write messages for greeting cards. While touring the Hallmark Centre in Kansas City I harboured a touch of wistfulness as I watched artists and writers My Outlook talk about the creative process Shelley Luedtke that goes into making and marketing cards.

The industry has taken a hit as people send an increasing number of electronic messages and greetings, yet there are more than 7 billion cards sold each year. On-line messages are easy, but there is something special about holding a card in your hand knowing that someone went to the effort to send it.

I love giving cards, especially the ‘just because’ kind and I often do so without identifying myself.

The recipients don’t necessarily need to know it’s me, just that someone cares about how they are doing. Yet I don’t know how effective that supposed anonymity is because my handwriting--like yours-is a pretty loud calling card. Once you see someone’s handwriting a few times it becomes quite recognizable. Mrs. Hanlon, my grade 6 teacher, had the most beautiful handwriting I had ever seen. Oh how I wished I could form my letters the way she did but all my attempts were in vain. My handwriting was uniquely mine.

Computer scientists at the University of Buffalo set out to answer the question of whether the handwriting of individuals is truly distinct. Researchers examined 11 characteristics and determined their software was able to distinguish, with 96% confidence, whether two documents were written by the same person or different people. Although the science is necessary for inclusion of this evidence in the legal system, it is knowledge the rest of us have always functioned by. Handwriting is so uniquely individual it is a mark of our identity.

As more of our work and communication is tied to keyboards we require handwriting less and less.

For someone like me whose penmanship is not the prettiest this is probably a good thing. But we are

losing something in the process. No, not simply some nostalgic skill. Something far more important-the way in which we think, learn and understand.

Handwriting causes our brains to mentally engage with information and this improves our literacy as well as our reading comprehension. It enhances our focus and fosters creativity, and results in greater information retention. Schools throughout Canada and the United States were doing away with teaching handwriting since keyboarding was more convenient, neater and easier to copy and send. However there is a move by many to re-incorporate pen to paper learning, noting increased and expanded neural development in language, memory and word recognition, supported by brain scans demonstrating that forming words by hand as opposed to a keyboard led to increased brain activity. Drawing on mounting research, students in several states began studying penmanship again, and private school and after school programs are becoming popular options for parents who recognize the benefits of children learning cursive.

Just as handwriting improves a student’s ability to think--the research says the same is true for adults. Wielding a pen leads to longterm information retention, better thought organization and an increased ability to generate ideas. It’s why some corporations are asking employees to leave behind their devices when they come into meetings and instead jot notes on paper. It has increased creativity, focus and even satisfaction in the outcomes of meetings.

A lot of our day is spent on keyboards but that doesn’t mean we can’t take advantage of the benefits of putting pen to paper. But we have to be intentional about it. There are some daily things we can do: make lists and reminders on paper instead of our phones, keep a journal, or close up our laptops and iPads and pull out a notebook instead. But perhaps one of the best ways to use that sharpened focus and creativity is to impact someone who may not expect it. A message on a greeting card, or a piece of looseleaf or even a simple sticky note can be a powerful gift of encouragement, support or comfort. The wishes, just like the penmanship, can be uniquely yours.

That’s my outlook.

Practical financial planning for parents-to-be Planning for a baby is exciting and sometimes a little frightening for expectant parents, especially first-time Carla Hindman p a r e n t s .

Along with the joy and fulfillment that a new baby brings, you’ll also have new financial responsibilities. Some costs are unavoidable, while others may largely depend on your discretion. Sticking to a financial plan could help provide wonderful opportunities and experiences for your child while keeping your family’s costs under control.

Preparing for the cost of birth. Paying down debt, creating a new budget, building an emergency fund and reviewing the beneficiaries on your account should all be on your pre-birth checklist. You might not have the time or energy for these tasks when you’re parenting a newborn so it’s a great idea to get a head start on them now.

Parental Leave. Canadians can qualify for employment insurance to help re-

place some of their income when they take time off after the arrival of a new baby.

Under the current program, mothers can take 15 weeks maternity leave, and then both parents can share an additional 35 weeks of parental leave. Benefits will be paid for a maximum of 50 weeks. Employment Insurance benefits may pay out 55% of a salary capped to a certain amount.

Recently, the 2017 federal budget announced the option of an 18-month parental leave, which would allow for an extra six months of leave, but at a reduced benefits rate of 33% of the maximum salary level.

It’s important to consult applicable legislation to explore what parental leave you may be entitled to, which may vary according to your province of residence. And don’t forget to research your work’s parental leave policies, as some companies offer top-ups to EI. To find out more about what you qualify for, check in with your employer’s benefits department and Service Canada.

Group benefits. When you finally welcome your new baby into the world, it’ll be nice to have a little extra space for your growing family. Many employers offer group benefits plans which allow employees to upgrade to a private or semi-private room in the hospital. Be sure to review your coverage to see if you’re eligible and remember

you may also be covered for an upgrade if your spouse has a benefit plan as well.

Know what things cost.

It’s amazing how many “things” babies need. Musthaves include a car seat (required by law for car travel), crib and bedding, stroller, diapers, clothing and home babyproofing. Add in things like a baby monitor, baby classes and toys and we’re talking thousands of dollars before your baby can even crawl!

Practical Money Skills offers a handy calculator that can help you estimate baby-related expenses.

Plan for the worst-case scenario. As a parent, you’re responsible for the wellbeing of your child. Now may be the time to prepare or revise a will and consider who you will appoint as your child’s guardian.

Also, if you don’t have life insurance, this is a good time to start shopping for a policy. If something were to happen to you, life insurance can help provide financial support for your child in the coming years.

Investigate tax advantages. There are several tax benefits available to parents to help alleviate the extra costs.

The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) replaced three previous programs- the Canada Child Tax Benefit, Universal Child Care Benefit and the National Child Benefit Supplement in July of 2016. The Canada Child Benefit is a monthly taxfree payment made to eligible families to help them with the

“The veterinary technology profession is vital to the quality care of animals in Saskatchewan and we value the work these professionals do in a range of workplaces across the province,” Stewart said. “The annual proclamation is an opportunity to recognize the positive contribu-

tion they make to our agricultural industry and to animal health care in general.”

“Registered veterinary technologists are dedicated professionals whose daily work ensures animal health care excellence in Saskatchewan,” Saskatchewan Association of Veterinary Technologists Board President Lois Ridgway said. “As part of the veterinary health care team, veterinary technologists promote public health, food safety and the delivery of progressive, compassionate and humane veterinary medical care for all animals. This declaration celebrates all veterinary technologists who

demonstrate the highest ethical standards in both their veterinary medicine-related work and their professional advancement.”

Saskatchewan has about 400 registered veterinary technologists who work in a variety of settings, such as veterinary clinics, livestock operations and veterinary pharmaceutical and supply companies.

will also receive an additional $100 bond each year until the child reaches the age of 15, to a maximum of $2,000.

Every year, Creative Tables for Cancer fills Arcola’s Prairie Place Hall with hundreds of people uniting to support a great cause and gathered around imaginatively and elegantly decorated tables such as this one “Adventures Await” - By New Dimension Hair Studio of Carlyle.

Nine-year-old Payton Sernick of Estevan (right) was the keynote speaker at Arcola’s Creative Tables for Cancer fundraiser, Thursday, Oct. 12. Payton was diagnosed with Stage 4 leukemia and Stage 4 lymphoma as a grade one student, but is now cancer-free. Every year, Darlene Olsen’s Creative Tables for Cancer fundraiser continues to be an evening of inspiration and entertainment. Ten years in, the event is still going strong with over 400 attendees seated at elaborately decorated tables like this one, created by Monica Galloway and Dianne Nehrebecky.

Fine food, fellowship, fundraising and fun were on the menu at Creative Tables for Cancer on Thursday, Oct. 12 at Arcola’s Prairie Place Hall.

There are situations that most people hope they never have to face – a life threatening emergency; but there are many people who have found their way into a profession or volunteer position that requires them to put their lives on the line to save another.

They have trained and prepared for being called to emergencies. However, no two situations are ever alike and their ability to stay calm in a stressful situation in order to serve those in need is to be commended.

To those that have chosen to serve people by providing emergency services and first response in the event of emergencies within our communities on a daily basis. Thank you.

Thank you for taking that call to respond to an emergency and answering it. We appreciate your efforts. It’s not an easy job, but it’s a necessary one.

Emergency medical services: dispatchers, physicians, nurses, EMS, RCMP, volunteer fire fighters, STARS, and first responders – you never know what situation you may face in a day or when you might be woken up by that call to service, but you continually go above and beyond the call-of-duty to ensure those in need receive the highest level of emergency care.

The teams of emergency service professionals and volunteers are very well trained and respond to incidents 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.

Our communities take comfort in knowing that if family member, a friend, or we are in need that you will be there for us and will do your best to ensure our lives and our safety. We are continually grateful for your efforts.

Many people in emergency response positions, whether volunteer or as a profession, are also asked to handle great personal emotional distress as the scenes they see and the situations they face can take a toll. So, thank you for putting yourself in that position.

Your dedicated service and your efforts are truly appreciated by the communities you serve.

We all want to reach our destinations safely when we’re on the road, but the safety of others we encounter while we travel is just as important.

“On average each year in Saskatchewan, there are 60 vehicle crashes involving an emergency vehicle, resulting in approximately 17 injuries. Prevention, by following safety guidelines when meeting emergency vehicles, can reduce the number of crashes and injuries,” said Shannon Ell, SGI’s Manager of Traffic Safety Promotion.

Drivers must slow to 60 km/h in highway construction or orange zones, when encountering emergency vehicles (ambulances, fire trucks, and police vehicles), tow trucks stopped on the roadside and around snow plows in winter.

There are some rules that apply specifically to meeting emergency vehicles on the road: The emergency vehicle always has the right of way when its siren is sounding and lights are flashing.

You must stop and let the emergency vehicle through at intersections.

If your vehicle is approached by an emergency vehicle with its lights or siren activated, you are required to move as close as possible to the right side of the road (or choose the nearest curb when driving on a one-way street). You should not enter the next intersection until after the emergency vehicle has passed through. The only exception to this is if a peace officer gives you other directions.

If the emergency vehicle is stopped on the highway with its lights engaged, you must slow down to 60 km/h when passing it (unless you are travelling in the opposite direction on a divided highway).

Do not try to follow the emergency vehicle as it goes to or comes from an emergency.

PureChem Cougars partner with KidSport for Nov. 3 home opener

Every youth deserves to participate in extracurricular activities. Locally Carlyle and Area KidSport intends to do just that as they work towards ensuring youth from the area are able to participate.

Statistics from KidSport show that in Canada show that more than 30 percent of Canadian youth under the age of 18 are unable to afford to play organized sport.

Their Mission Statement reads: “We believe that no kid should be left on the sidelines and all should be given the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of organized sports.

KidSport provides support to children in order to remove financial barriers that prevent them from playing organized sport.”

The not-for-profit organization focuses on providing financial assistance for registration fees and equipment to kids that are aged 18 and under. A confiden-

tial application process ensures that kids in need are given the support to participate.

The Carlyle and Area KidSport chapter encompasses the communities of Carlyle, Arcola, Manor, and White Bear.

“KidSport believes in the values and benefits of kids playing organized sport and we know that sport will provide them with the opportunity to: become physically active, improve their self-esteem and self-confidence, learn life-long skills, improve their academic performance, make new friends, share and celebrate their culture, and contribute to a strong and healthy community.” ~ www. kidsportcanada.ca Locally Carlyle and Area KidSport has been in operation since 2003.

“We have supported kids by covering the cost of registration fees for them to take parts in activities approved

by KidSport Saskatchewan,” Shelley Sargent.

“We have collected some used hockey equipment

and figure skates over the years that families can access as well if needed and if we have the right size available.”

“Over the years we have paid registrations fees for the following activities: Soccer, Swimming, Baseball, Softball, Hockey, Figure Skating, Karate, Football, and Gymnastics.”

Over the past four years, Sargent explained that in 2014 they received 25 applications totaling $5,100, in 2015 there were 22 applications which covered $4,916, in 2016 there were 24 applications which covered $6,045 of costs for kids, and this year there have been 23 applications totaling $4,485. “[We] have received an additional 18 applications this fall waiting approval totaling an additional $6,695,” Sargent added.

She further explained, “We receive a yearly operating and allocation grant from KidSport Saskatchewan. The majority of the funds come through

local donations and/or fundraising opportunities.”

Thus, the Carlyle PureChem Cougars organizing a guaranteed 50/50 for $5,000 is a huge help in ensuring youth in the area are able to participate.

“I will be at the game on Nov. 3,” Sargent added. “We plan to have a KidSport tent set up and will have some giveaways for the kids such

as stickers, balloons, tattoos, and Frisbees.”

For Sargent, she has been a part of it since 2003, “We have had various people give their time over the years to be a part of Carlyle KidSport. I have been fortunate to recruit a couple of new committee members, but would invite anyone interested in joining our committee to please let me know. It

is a great opportunity to get involved in helping to support the youth and families of Carlyle and area.”

So, come on out to the Carlyle PureChem Cougars 2017/18 season opener on Friday, Nov. 3, against the Arcola Combines. Admission is FREE! So come on out and enjoy the game, while supporting two local teams, and KidSport.

No professional sports team — other than perhaps a certain basketball team from Golden State — has had a run of success like the Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders.

And the excellence continues this year (13-1-1 through 15 games). Now, if they can just turn that incessant regular-season winning into a Grey Cup this November, everyone in Cowtown will be happy.

Since 2013 and up to an including games of mid-October this season, the Stampeders have posted an astounding record of 70-14-2.

John Hufnagel, the veteran CFL quarterback and coach, must have got tired of winning, winning, winning and turned coaching duties over to another former QB, Dave Dickenson, who has continued the string of success in this, his second season.

Bo Levi Mitchell has been brilliant at quarterback. While his 2017 stats show him to be a mid-top-10 performer, his outstanding career marks are starting to pile up. In fact, since he took over as Stamps’ starter in 2014, Mitchell has racked up a record of 56-8-2, the best winning percentage among QBs in CFL history. The Katy, Texas native, who starred at Eastern Washington, has won a bushel of awards, including the CFL’s most outstanding player award in 2016.

More are likely to follow.

Jerome Messam has been a workhorse carrying the ball, and the Stamps — thanks in large part to a 60-1 win over Hamilton in late July — have scored more points than anyone in the CFL. That’s fine and dandy, but it’s November performances that count, and that’s where the Stampeders want to change things this year.

They coasted through the Western Division playoffs last year, but suffered a 39-33 overtime loss to Ottawa Redblacks, who won their first Grey Cup in only their third season of existence.

There could be karma in the air in Ottawa on Nov. 26 when the Stamps almost assuredly will show up as the West’s representative in the Grey Cup

game. It was Ottawa that broke Calgary’s hearts in overtime last year and it will be in Ottawa — with most of the Redblacks players likely watching from the seats or opposing them on the field — where the Stampeders rise to their rightful position atop the Grey Cup presentation podium.

not only is it a partly new building with all the renovations almost complete (just some finishing touches left to do), but the decorating right now is FANTASTIC – very creative and “Halloween-y”. Aja L. Noyes 1978 - 2017

Aja Lyle Noyes was born in Weyburn, SK on October 3, 1978 and passed away in New Westminster, B.C. on September 30, 2017, aged 38.

Aja is survived by his partner Jamie Oswald and their children, Riley and Emma; father Darrell (Sherry) Noyes; mother Valerie Creighton; sister Ira Noyes; step brothers, Todd, Chris and Devon McCubbin; grandparents, Erna Creighton and Ed and Lois Goudy. Aja will also be remembered by his uncles, Don (Marnie) Richardson, Tom Creighton and Gary (Andrea) Goudy, as well as numerous cousins, close friends and loved ones.

He was predeceased by his grandfathers, Lyle Noyes, Harry Richardson and Don Creighton and aunt Janice Kibben.

Aja will be forever and deeply missed by everyone that knew him.

A Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Stoughton, SK with Pastors Robert Fenn and Ken Stoddard of�iciating. A luncheon took place at the Legion immediately following the memorial service.

If friends so desire, donations in Aja’s memory may be made to the Hospitals of Regina Foundation (designated Pediatric Oncology at the Pasqua Hospital), 225 - 1874 Scarth Street, Regina, SK, S4P 4B3.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Hall Funeral Services, Estevan.

Boy one can sure tell it is now fall weather, really gets cold at night when the sun goes down, but these last few days it’s been darn cold almost all day long – hopefully we will get some more nice days. I did finish cleaning up the garden (still have carrots out in field, but that’s Gray’s gardenha), also got my flower beds all cleaned out, just have to cover up my rose plants sometime, the lawn ornaments are also put away – so I guess you can say I’m ready for the blanket of white to arrive someday in the future (don’t want to mention the four letter word beginning with s just yet – not ready for that). Drive Away Hunger Kelly Running Observer Staff

Farm Credit Canada (FCC) partnered with Redvers School and Carlyle Elementary School (CES) for their annual “Drive Away Hunger” campaign.

The Redvers School came together to raise 466 lbs of food for the Carlyle and District Food Bank.

As the result of a little challenge within CES the school was able to raise 1,587 lbs. This totaled 1,800 items with the two classrooms to bring in the most receiving a pizza party.

The Grade 5 class of Mr. Bloomfield and the 5/6 split of Miss Greve’s took these top spots with the Grade 5 bringing in 286 items and the 5/6s bringing in 285.

“Everybody put in a great effort,” CES Principal Tyler Fehrenbach stated.

“You did an amazing job,” he said to the assembled student body.

“Respect, Responsibility, and Belonging are important to us here.

You should be proud of the effort you put in. You might not realize how many people

you’re helping by doing this; but, whether you brought one item or 20 items, it all helps.”

Although the top two classrooms to bring in food were to receive a pizza party, a parent of one of the students was moved by the efforts put in by all of the youth in

the school and decided to sponsor a pizza party for the entire school.

In total FCC – Carlyle collected 2,910.2 lbs of food between participating schools, the FCC office, and other contributing local businesses.

“When it comes to

the basics, food is at the top of the list,” the FCC writes on their webpage.

“While most of us are fortunate to have enough to eat, not everyone is so lucky. In fact, children make up over a third of those who rely on Canadian food banks.”
