New impaired driving laws take effect January 1 Cellphone Law Also Changing SGI is reminding Saskatchewan residents that impaired driving laws are changing in the new year. Tougher legislation was passed earlier this fall, with strengthened laws taking effect January 1, 2017.

“These changes reinforce that driving when you’ve been drinking is the wrong decision,” Minister responsible for SGI Joe Hargrave said. “Tougher consequences around vehicle seizures, licence suspensions and mandatory ignition interlock drive home the point that you risk not only your life but the lives of everyone else on the road when you choose to drive impaired. Don’t risk it. Make a New Year’s resolution to plan a sober ride – every time – so you and others get home safely.”

Changes build on laws implemented in 2014 to strengthen impaired driving legislation in Saskatchewan.

Starting January 1: • Experienced drivers who are charged for the first time with having a blood alcohol content (BAC) over .04 will have their vehicle seized for three days; • There will be zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol for all drivers 21 and under and all new drivers; and • Ignition interlock laws will be the strongest in Canada, with mandatory ignition interlock for drivers who register a BAC of .16 or greater or refuse to provide a breath sample (1st offence - two years; 2nd offence - five years; 3rd and subsequent offence - 10 years).

Residents are reminded they can report suspected impaired drivers to police by calling 9-1-1.

In 2015 in Saskatchewan, there were nearly 1,200 impaired driving collisions, killing 54 people and injuring 580 others.

A new cellphone law is also in effect January 1. To help prevent distracted driving, the cellphone law is expanding from “using” a cellphone while driving to “holding, viewing, using or manipulating” a cellphone while driving.

The following applies under both the current and new cellphone law: • All drivers are prohibited from using hand-held cellphones.

• Experienced drivers can use hands-free devices, but new drivers can’t.

The Carlyle RCMP dealt with several files from Wednesday, Dec. 21 to Thursday, Dec. 29. During this period, members of the detachment aatended several weather-related calls. Staff Sgt. Darren Simons reminds motorists: “This is Saskatchewan. We neighbour Alberta and Manitoba as well as North Dakota, so we really must plan on winter weather. Use technology to check the weather forecast and highway conditions. Make sure your vehicle is sound enough to travel and make sure your cell phone is charged. We recommend snow tires instead of all-season tires.

Remember, driving a four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive doesn’t mean you should travel. I’ve seen many of those vehicles in the ditch, too.”

“No matter what you drive, slow down and travel for the weather conditions,” adds Simons. “And if it’s not an emergency, don’t be driving at all if travel isn’t recommended.”

911 calls Three 911 calls of a non-emergency nature were received. Please dial 911 only in case of a genuine emergency.

Alcohol-related offences RCMP conducted two impaired driving investigations during this period.

Reports of intoxicated individuals causing problems in the detachment area were resolved with the assistance of police and resulted in no charges being laid.

Assistance Police responded to several calls for assistance which were due to adverse winter weather conditions.

Members assisted local EMS on two occasions, with one situation related to inclement weather.

Police assisted Social Services.

RCMP assisted Sask Justice in serving documents.

Members received a call from the Carlyle area requesting assistance regarding a raccoon.

Criminal harassment Members responded to an incident of criminal harassment via Facebook in the Carlyle area.

Failure to comply with release conditions

New rules on access to birth registration now in effect for adult adoptees and birth parents On January 1, new regulations came into effect to make it easier for adult adoptees and birth parents to access birth registration information.

The Government of Saskatchewan originally announced the changes in February 2016 to provide notice to individuals involved in the 37,000 adoptions that have occurred in Saskatchewan since 1922.

“Adoptees, their adoptive families and their birth families have been asking for us to improve access to birth registration information,” Social Services Minister Tina BeaudryMellor said. “These changes will help support individuals involved in an adoption in learning more about their history, and even potentially strengthening their connections to their culture and birth family, if this is something they wish to move forward with.”

Birth registrations contain information such as the name of listed birth parents, the name of the child at birth and the location of the birth, along with name of the hospital.

The regulatory changes improve access and replace the requirement to obtain consent with the option for birth parents and adult adoptees to file a veto or a contact preference. A veto prevents the release of identifying information. A contact preference indicates how an individual wishes to be contacted.

All adult adoptees and birth parents are encouraged to call 1-800-667-7539 or visit www.saskatchewan.ca/adoptionrecords to learn more about the new regulatory changes that improve access to birth registration information. They can access forms to apply for birth registration information or file a contact preference or veto.

An area individual failed to comply with their release conditions.

False alarm One false alarm- originating from Carlyle- occurred during this period in the detachment area.

Fire A fire at an abandoned building in Redvers is believed to be linked to other fires in that community and is currently under investigation by RCMP. In Alameda, a grain truck caught fire.

Mental Health Act Members attended to several calls under the Mental Health Act. Property damage Damage to the Arcola Post Office is currently under investigation by RCMP. An individual damaged property at an Arcola business and has stated they intend to pay for repairs. No charges were laid regarding this incident.

Members responded to a report of property damage in Redvers.

RCMP responded to two separate reports of property damage at residences in the Carlyle area.

Theft In Carlyle, an unlocked SUV which

was running with the keys in it was stolen. Police remind the public to keep all property- including vehicleslocked and secure to prevent theft.

Traffic-related offences Carlyle RCMP responded to five collisions throughout the detachment area during this period, with some related to weather conditions.

In Redvers, an individual was injured by a vehicle. This matter is currently under investigation.

An incident of hit and run at a Kenosee Lake business is currently under investigation by RCMP. Members assisted with the removal of a vehicle from a ditch on Hwy #9.

Traffic offences included motor vehicle insurance violations, a motorist driving without a valid licence, several speeding tickets, failures to stop at intersections and non-moving violations.

Uttering threats A report of uttering threats which originated from the Manor area was proven to be unfounded.

Well-being checks RCMP members performed several well-being checks throughout this period.

It’s a Wrap! Carlyle and Area Toy Drive a Santa-spirited success Lynne Bell

Christmas 2016 was a little cheerier for some area kids, thanks to the people behind the Carlyle and Area Toy Drive. Elves from the Cornerstone Family and Youth’s (CFY) Girls Group and The Bargain!

Shop as well as the Carlyle branches of RBC/Royal Bank and Southern Plains Co-op grocery store joined forces to provide a Christmas stocking and wrapped gift for area kids in need from infants to young people aged 17.

“It’s been a really, really tough year for a lot of people,” says Shannon MacLeod, manager of Carlyle’s The Bargain! Shop. “We see it in the store everyday and it’s really heartbreaking. But it also really touches your heart in a positive way, because our customers have been so generous and all of our staff are really behind the toy drive.”

“When we were loading up my car with donations to take to the school to wrap the gifts, a gentleman on the street asked what we were doing,” adds MacLeod. “I told him and he handed us $100 right there. He said he was moving to Carlyle and what better way to start out in the town than to donate to something like this.”

“Equally,” adds MacLeod,“Every family who received a gift or gifts from us last year donated to the Toy Drive this year. “It may only be five dollars, but for those families, five dollars is a lot.”

CFY coordinator Jenn Sedor agrees. “The toy drive really is a local effort. Every child in need who was referred to us receives a stocking and a gift from Santa. Those kids range in age from infants to 17-years-old. And those gifts were made possible by the generosity of people, businesses and organizations from throughout our corner of Saskatchewan. We can’t thank them enough.”

Shop in Carlyle, the Carlyle branch of RBC Royal Bank and Southern Plains Co-op Grocery in Carlyle- all combined forces to help St. Nick. Shannon MacLeod, manager of The Bargain! Shop says: “It’s been a tough year for a lot of people in this area. We’re happy to help and people have been so generous. We couldn’t do any of this without them.”

Sedor. “That year, our CFY Girls Group got involved and they were equally excited to get involved in 2016. I think everyone- especially at Christmas time- feels the need to give and these girls are no exception.”

“They were very excited to work on the toy drive,” says Sedor. “Donations of money or gifts could be dropped off in Carlyle at The Bargain! Shop, the RBC or Southern Plains Co-op Grocery store. Some of their staff members and some members of our area communities joined us at our Wrap Party on Dec. 19.

We’re grateful for every pair of hardworking hands, because we wrapped, labelled and sorted over 500 gifts.”

Those gifts were given to kids from Alameda, Arcola, Carlyle, Kennedy, Kipling, Kisbey, Manor, Maryfield, Ochapawace First Nation, Oxbow, Pheasant Rump First Nation, Wawota and White Bear First Nations and MacLeod says the community response to the toy drive has caught the attention of The Bargain! Shop’s headquarters in Mississauga, Ontario.

“This was so different from 2015,” says MacLeod.

“We’re more organized. But both years, people have been so generous. Head office says our store was

number one for cash donations in the country.”

“We are grateful for whatever donations we received,” adds MacLeod. “Some people brought gifts, some donated cash. In some cases, 15 or 20 people’s donations of a dollar or two enabled us to buy a toy.”

“In this economic climate, people are watching their pennies,” continues MacLeod. “They’re a lot more conscious about how they spend- and donatetheir money. I want them to know that we spend their cash donations wisely. I know when the sales are coming and we shop those for the toy drive. We do this one dollar at a time.”

“We had a last-minute rush of requests for gifts during the last few days of the toy drive,” says MacLeod. “And I knew we would. It’s not about the adults- it’s about kids.”

“We just started this toy drive to help a few people out, she says. “It’s such a hard thing to ask for help and on behalf of everyone involved with the toy drive, we’d like to thank everyone who donated.”

“Their generosity really gave a lot of their neighbours a very Merry Christmas.”

Leko’s Conservation Corner – Sharing the landscape with cougars

By Lindsey Leko In Saskatchewan, the elusive cougar has created quite a stir with the local media and residents over the last several months. So I figured that now is a good time to discuss the cougar and what to do if you see one.

Contrary to what many believe, cougars once ranged across the prairies but were displaced to more remote mountain regions as settlement advanced. Over the past two decades they have been expanding their range eastward and are recolonizing much of their former range.

In Saskatchewan, cougars are a natural part of the landscape, especially in the Cypress Hills region and along the entire length of the forest fringe from Meadow Lake to Hudson Bay. These animals are a sign of healthy ecosystems and sightings often go unreported. This being said, we have to understand that cougars are around and part of our environment.

We often go into bear country and not even bat an eye when we see a bear. Because we anticipate bears to be around, we behave differently and take precautions in our outdoor activities. We have to learn to do the same thing with cougars.

Other provinces and jurisdictions have learned to co-exist with these elusive creatures for many years.

Once you have a better understanding of cougar behaviour and how to react when seeing one, you’ll be that much more comfortable when in cougar territory.

Cougar Facts First of all, they do not like people and do their best to avoid us. I have been an officer for 25 years and have never seen one in the wild.

They are active at night and in the early mornings and tend not to travel in broad daylight.

Historically, there has not been a documented cougar attack on a human here in Saskatchewan.

Their primary food source is deer, but they will also prey on elk, rabbits, beaver, porcupines, raccoons and grouse.

Cougars tend to hide or stash their food and will avoid eating where they could be spotted.

On average, an adult male cougar is about seven to

eight feet long from nose to the tip of their tail. The tail is the key feature here as it is about one-third of the cat’s total length, is thick and has a black tip at the end.

Cougars can leave tracks as well that may serve as an indicator. Cougar tracks show four toes on both the front and hind paws. There will be no claw marks as they are retracted when they walk. There will also be an M-shaped heel pad with two lobes at the top or leading edge, and three lobes at the base.

A male cougar’s territory can range from 100 to 1000 km/sq. in size depending upon terrain, vegetation and prey abundance.

Cougars are very protective of their young and their territories. Scrape marks, urine, and feces are common markers used to mark territory and attract mates.

Contrary to what some believe, cougars cannot roar like other big cats. It can however purr like a house cat and growl like….well a larger house cat!!

So now that you know what a cougar looks like, what should you do if you see one?

Well, as difficult as this may be to do, keep calm. If it is at a distance then it should just keep moving on.

If it is a close encounter, make yourself look as large as possible and back away slowly, keeping the cougar in view, and allowing a clear exit for it.

Pick up children and small pets immediately. Never run or turn your back – as sudden movements may provoke an attack.

Report all sightings to your local conservation officer.

Many times we have no idea of cougar activity because no one reports it. We would like to come out and investigate it, to either confirm or quash the sighting in hopes of avoiding panic in the area.

Have there been attacks on domestic livestock?

Yes, but very few. Some domestic animal attacks get blamed on cougars even though they had no involvement. Many times other predators like coyotes, bears, wolves or even pet dogs are the ones responsible for the attack.

If a cougar is spotted on someone’s property, can it be killed?

Landowners do have the right in Saskatchewan to kill any predator, including wolves, bears and cougars, on their own land if the animal is posing an immediate threat to their family, property or livestock.

This means that just because you see a cougar, you cannot simply shoot it because it is near your house, or might be a problem later.

NEW YEARS

Cougars are protected in Saskatchewan and all cougar kills are investigated.

If a cougar is taken under the authority of a landowner’s right, the local conservation officer must be notified.

A permit can be issued if the landowner wishes to retain the cougar.

Is there any truth to the rumour that cougars were intentionally released into Saskatchewan?

Folks, please believe me when I say that the government did not implement a plan to release cougars into the wild to control the deer population.

Some residents and landowners are convinced of this, even though it goes against every wildlife management practice on the planet. This rumour is false.

Why can’t a cougar be captured, removed from an area and then relocated?

If the cougar is acting and behaving the way it should be, then there should never be an issue.

Problems arise when the animal becomes comfortable around humans. At this point, re-locating a problem animal is simply moving the problem from one area to another.

What should a producer do when they suspect a predation kill?

When any predator is suspected of killing livestock, producers should contact the nearest Saskatchewan Crop Insurance office to report the incident.

Onto 2017 and five years here

Quite often people will ask me how I am able to write a column each week. For nearly five years, I haven’t missed one. People will then ask how I can write on such varied topics from week to week as well.

My friend once printed off a small comic strip, which now hangs in my office. In the comic Kelly Running one of the characters asks if the Observer Staff other one has an idea for a story, while the individual he’s talking to says he’s “waiting for inspiration” and “to be in the right mood.” When asked what mood that it, he replies, “Last minute panic.”

And sometimes this is true, as the deadline sneaks up, I feel more and more pressure to write something, anything, and somehow I squeeze out something.

Other times this is far from the case and a topic that I feel strongly about or have been thinking a lot about simply flows out… without the pressure of last minute panic. But, I’ve never missed a deadline and I think that’s pretty crazy.

Once April rolls around I’ll have been here for five years, so a milestone. But, five years will also mean 52 weeks in a year times five years of columns… I

will have written 260 columns. That seems insane to me.

Initially moving to Carlyle and working at The Observer was a two year plan. I figured that if someone was willing to hire me that I had to take it and earn some time in the work place, because most positions require schooling and experience… which experience is nearly impossible to find. This job was that, experience. I thought that two years was a great goal because that shows other employers that I have “stick-to-it-ive-ness.” No, that’s not a word, but you get my point.

The first six months were a struggle. I moved here not knowing anyone, which is alright because I was learning my job and was intensely focused on it. But, it gets lonely. After that I started meeting people who would welcome me into their lives, which I was very thankful for and I continue to meet great people.

But, at that six month point I began questioning if I should stick around or not… should I follow the plan? It was around that time I became involved with coaching and the next year, I was fortunate enough to join a ladies volleyball team. Those two things turned my view around, I had something to look forward to, which wasn’t work related.

I think this is extremely important when it comes down to it. In life, you need something to look

forward to. Last week I wrote about my existential crisis and what life means and I must say, it’s about doing things that make you happy and that make others happy.

Coaching is a joy because I love watching the girls improve and thrive. It’s a lot of fun seeing girls I’ve helped coach make things like Team Saskatchewan or win a gold medal at the Saskatchewan Summer Games – knowing the amount of work they’ve put into reaching these goals makes me so proud of them. Although not everyone gets to make those types of teams, I’m proud of the progress that each one of them makes.

Playing is then a blast because of the team I’m on.

Wins and losses don’t really matter, although we are a relatively competitive bunch, but more than that it’s the people. We have a great group of women who play and I thoroughly enjoy getting to catch up with them each week, play volleyball, and have some laughs.

So, although I was intending to be here two years, and it’s now stretched to five, it’s the ties that you start making in a community and the things you can look forward to that keeps you there. Although mine is heavily volleyball related, I did find other aspects to the community and area to enjoy as well.

Heading into 2017, I can say I’m excited to see what the year brings and am happy to be where I am.

You’ve probably been on the giving and receiving end of many Happy New Year wishes because it begins again. Another new year.

Commemorations of a new year have been held since about 2000 B.C. but the date and the ways in which it is observed Shelley Luedtke differs greatly by culture and country. Games, fireworks, food, envelopes of lucky money, visits to ancestors’ graves, parades, and church services mark celebrations from Canada to Korea, Cyprus to Switzerland.

Traditions vary around the world: jumping from a chair at midnight to bring good luck, shattering plates against the front door hopeful that with more broken pieces come more friends, hanging green plants and bamboo to signify hopes for life and health, or baking a coin in dough believing that whoever finds it will be the recipient of good fortune.

Whether it is children in Denmark or adults in Sri Lanka the hopes and wishes are much the same: good luck, prosperity, health and love. New year hopes that are similar since we as human beings are so very similar.

As the year came to an end we were told how divided we are. Nation against nation. Region against region. Left vs right. East vs west. Bullies vs victims. Rich vs poor. The divide appears to be so deep and polarizing that conversation breaks down and there is increasing doubt the chasms can ever be crossed.

Countries blame one another for not doing enough to assist in some places or are accused of interfering too much in others. Regions are in constant conflict with little to show for the mediation that has been tried. Those calling themselves liberal are said to be in direct opposition to those who carry the label of a conservative.

Division. Conflict. Rivalry. Strife. So much that would seek to separate and put us in opposition to each other. And the canyons keep getting bigger.

Some may choose to look to leaders, or the wealthy and powerful to find a way to bridge the chasm. Others aren’t content to wait for anyone else.

Like 16-year old Natalie Hampton who knew what it felt like to be ostracized in the school cafeteria.

She developed the “Sit With Us_” app enabling students to coordinate safe places to eat lunch and make new friends. Natalie has received an outpouring of thankfulness from students who can find a table at which to sit without fear of rejection.

Emily Duffy lives in Ireland. She invented a new type of sleeping bag that is being used by those who are homeless, after seeing that cloth bags get dirty and are hard to keep dry. The production of the bags is being undertaken by people who used to live on the street but now have a job--thanks to her company. Oh, by the way, Emily is 15 years old.

But don’t think the job of bridging the gap is work for the young only. An 86-year old former engineer named Ed Mosely heard about an effort to knit caps

for premature babies. Never having knit before, his daughter bought supplies and an instruction booklet and Mosely learned. As the pile of finished caps grew, his efforts inspired others to provide a gift of warmth to the more than 2,000 babies that enter the neonatal intensive care unit each year at their local hospital, and is a comfort to the parents who know there are people reaching out to them in love and care.

No matter who we are or where we live, we share similar hopes and dreams as we step into the new year: health, love, good fortune and friendship. Yes there is much that divides us, but so much more that can serve to unite.

So...Stastny Novy Rok! Ein gluckliches neues Jahr!

The way we express the wishes might be very different, but the wishes themselves are very much the same. It’s a place to start.

New Years Thoughts

Looking at a calendar at the beginning of January is kind of like surveying your front yard the morning after a fresh snowfall. There before you lies nothing but possibilities. The history of what has gone before – the path to the road, the dog’s favourite bone, the empty planter – all things of the past.

Jocelyn Hainsworth You still have an idea of where to find these things, if you want to do some digging, but that choice is yours. The untouched landscape of the New Year in front of you gives you an opportunity to make a new path if that’s what you want to do ... it’s the inspiration behind every New Year’s resolution ever made.

Good luck to everyone who has made them – it’s so hard to forge a new path when the old one always took you so easily to where you wanted to go.

I guess this probably shows my age, but as time goes by, and each New Year’s Day rolls around, I tend to see this pristine landscape in front of me not so much as my own personal front yard but the distance I will journey over the next twelve months. I wonder: who are the people I will travel

with? What will they teach me? What sights will I see? What work will I accomplish? What will bring me greatest joy? Or deepest sorrow? Who will come into my life? Who will leave? Will the things that I believe in today still make sense to me a year from now?

How far will these next twelve months take me? Is my goal merely the horizon, or what lies beyond it?

Do you see? The questions go on and on; the possibilities are endless.

I have no plans to make anything as solid and forbidding as an actual resolution. I’m pretty sure that I have had a zero success rate with them thus far in my life, so why would I set myself up for more frustration? As much as I would like to be two sizes smaller, if that’s all I’m aiming for during an entire year of my life, how shallow is that?

With 365 days of wide open space in front of me, surely I can do better.

So, I stand on the doorstep of 2017, and I survey the beauty of an untouched landscape, and I think about the year to come. I have plans to expand the gardening projects that I started last year, and talking about writing a second book doesn’t seem to be getting the job done. I need to ‘dig in’ to that untouched snow and show some progress.

If the sun light off this metaphorical snow I speak of is too bright for my eyes, or if the snow is too soft and fluffy to support my weight, will I need an aid of some kind, like sunglasses or snowshoes?

Hopefully I won’t be afraid to offer or accept help if I see someone struggling – even if that someone is me.

Will I remember to use the landmarks that rise above the fresh snow as my compass? The “tree” of family values taught to me as a child? The traffic sign at the corner to guide my decisions?

The fence in the distance as a moral line not to cross?

And, the child in me sees the potential for a great game of Fox and Goose. Will I be smart enough to take time to play this year? I sure hope so.

I guess what I’m saying is the future is full of so much more than the desire to shed those last fifteen pounds, and while it’s true that every new day is the beginning of the rest of your life, the beginning of a whole new year and the pristine snowscape that comes at this time of the year makes it easier to think about starting fresh.

Maybe the best and simplest plan of all is to aim at leaving beautiful tracks to look back on next December.

There are several reasons, which includes; crickets being “gram-for-gram one of the most efficient protein creators on the planet. By dry weight, a single cricket ranges between 65 per cent – 70 per cent pure protein.

In contrast, beef is between 17 per cent – 40 per cent protein, with the rest being primarily fat content. But what about the quality of the protein you ask?

five losses at the Christmas break, three fewer than next-best, Pittsburgh and Washington.

Columbus faced a stern test in the final week before the Christmas break, coming off a successful Western swing and then having three home games in four days — the final two on back-to-back nights against Eastern powers Pittsburgh and Montreal. The result?

A 7-1 shellacking of Sidney Crosby’s Pens, and a 2-1 win over Montreal, the team’s 12th straight win.

A surprise? Yes, absolutely. The upstart Blue Jackets, who have made the NHL playoffs only twice in their 16-year history, finished last season with the fourth worst record in the league. Teams simply don’t go from almost worst to among the best in one season, do they?

So what’s changed? The intense Tortorella is in his first full season behind the bench. The play of rookie defenceman Zack Werenski, 19, has been sublime.

He’s the highest-scoring rookie defenceman in the league and has the best plus-minus mark among firstyear blueliners. The Jackets have no quit. This is the team that had a player, Matt Calvert, take a puck off his forehead, get 36 stitches, and return to the game to score the game-winner. Shorthanded, no less.

Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky (GAA under 1.90, with a .935 save percentage) will be in the all-star game. Journeyman Sam Gagner has finally found a home, among the team leaders in goals. Cam Atkinson and Alex Wennberg are emerging as two of the NHL’s best forwards. Brandon Saad and Nick Foligno are solid and dependable vets. And the Columbus defence, led by ex-Western Hockey Leaguers Ryan Murray and Seth Jones, is among the best units in the league.

Tortorella has his team playing at a high-octane pace, moving the puck quickly and tenaciously forechecking opponents into mistakes. They’re a fun team to watch and the resulting success is fun for the players, and fans.

It has been quite a run lately for Ohio sports teams. Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA title in June. Cleveland Indians came within a whisker of winning the World Series. Ohio State Buckeyes are two wins away from the college football national championship. And now the Blue Jackets are carrying the Ohio torch on the ice.

Thirty-two games does not make a season but as far as half-seasons go, fans in Columbus are anything but blue about their red-hot Jackets.

Again the Mosaic Meal and annual GFK Invitational Post-Mosaic Meal Volleyball Classic were a success. Thanks to all of the members of the Carlyle Fire Department, Carlyle Emergency Medical Services, and the RCMP who participated. It was a great afternoon.

Fitness club is still a popular attraction for students and teachers at GFK. Lots of kids are attending and they are all at different levels of fitness.

Anyone and everyone is welcome at any time.

Fitness club runs every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning from 7:45 – 8:30.

A sense of community at Gordon F. Kells Submitted by Shayna Nicolay The Mosaic Meal continued its tradition of 25 years on December 21st, at Gordon F. Kells high school. The high school welcomed many paramedics and members of the police department. Many alumnus and alumna also made an appearance at the school for the meal.

The Mosaic Meal is heavily promoted by the school’s food drive that ran from December 1st until December 16th. This food drive brings competition between the grades of Gordon F. Kells since the grade that brings in the most non-perishable items gets to eat first during the meal. The need for donated food in our communities’ food bank has increased a lot over the past few years.

This year the food drive brought in a total of 3,200 non-perishable items.

The grade 9’s brought in the most items this year and were rewarded with eating first for the Mosaic Meal pot luck lunch. The meal consisted of many different types of food including: Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Ukrainian, Filipino, appetizers, and desserts.

Gordon F. Kells teacher, Trent Johnson says: “[The Mosaic Meal] demonstrates a sense of community and allows students to experience different cultures. It’s also a nice intro into the Christmas holidays.”

When asked why he likes to lead this event, Johnson says: “I have such an amazing staff and students that promote and participate in this event so well.”

From Page 6 - Conservation Corner The crop insurance adjuster will contact a conservation officer to meet on site for the claim and to look at the kill site to determine the cause of death.

If there are multiple predation events in one location, Crop Insurance has qualified predation management specialists available to help solve the problem by removing the suspected predator.

In most cases this is used for coyote predation on sheep or cattle. The specialist will come in and evaluate the situation and then make suggestions to the producer and attempt to remove the predator.

If you have any questions or concerns about cougars in your part of the province, please contact your local

conservation officer. Please remember to report all cougar sightings to your local officer as well.

Finally, with the beginning of a new year, I would be remiss if I did not take the time to thank those of you who reported a violation, an injured animal or took time to get involved in the protection of our fish and wildlife. Thank you, to the RCMP officers who assisted with injured animal calls that a conservation officer was unable to get to; the highway workers for picking up these animals off the road; and to the vets and wildlife rehabilitators who assessed and treated injured animals brought to them by the public.

I would also like to remind everyone that conservation officers are only a part of a bigger team including biolo-

gists, dispatch operators and our very helpful customer support staff who assist you at our offices. On behalf of each of us, I hope that you had a great

holiday season and that you have a safe and happy 2017.

Toree performed “Jingle Bells” on her xylophone for the audience amassed in the Manor gymnasium for the Talent Show.

With a comedy sketch, Vincent embodied an “Elf on the Shelf,” during his performance.

Manor’s grade three/four class performed the comical “Chubby Little Snowman” at their annual Talent Show, which was held on Wednesday, Dec. 21.

The final number was a dance number to “Christmas Clap.” Grades three, four, five, and six took to the stage to perform the dance and did so exceptionally well. The hip hop song included students’ break dancing skills.

CANADA’S GREEK COMMUNITY The 2011 National Household Survey found that 252,590 Canadians claim to have full or partial Greek heritage or ancestry. The actual number is likely much higher, as ethnic Greeks born in other countries—Turkey, Cyprus and Egypt, for instance—may not be included in the tally. While well-established Greek populations exist in urban centres throughout the country, an estimated eighty per cent of Greek Canadians live in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario.

Greek immigration to Canada began in the early nineteenth century and saw a marked increase following the end of the Second World War. The 1911 census recorded 3650 Greeks in Canada; between 1945 and 1971, that number rose by more than 100,000 individuals. Greek Cypriots, a segment of ethnic Greeks that are native of Cyprus, also came to Canada in large numbers starting in 1974 after the Turkish invasion of the island. These English-speaking refugees mainly settled in Montreal, Toronto and Kitchener, where most of Canada’s 25,000 Greek Cypriots still live today.

Culture-wise, Greek Canadian newspapers like the Hellenic Tribune and the Greek Courier continue to play a large role in helping Greeks integrate into life in Canada while keeping them informed about their homeland. Celebrations of Greek national holidays are held annually in many major Canadian cities; the most noteworthy of these festivities takes place on Greek Independence Day, March 25. From television personality George Stroumboulopoulos to Mike Lazaridis, creator of the legendary BlackBerry mobile phone, Canadians with Greek roots stand out across our country’s social, economic and cultural landscapes—not to mention its culinary scene. The 1900 Paris Olympics were an odd beast. Not only did they span five months, unfolding simultaneously with the Paris World’s Fair, but they also lacked some fundamental elements of the Games as we know them today. Indeed, neither medals nor national teams were part of the equation; participants competed for independent teams, and winners received only a title. Nevertheless, an Olympiad did take place in Pierre de Coubertin’s homeland that year, and it was the scene of a milestone moment in Canadian history—although no one really knew it at the time.

George Orton, who was born and raised in Strathroy, Ontario, spent part of his childhood paralyzed from an injury. He was able to regain full mobility thanks to a rigorous exercise regimen, and never stopped training. By the time he started his undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto, Orton was one of the top track and field athletes in North America. He competed mainly in one-mile, two-mile and steeplechase footraces and won several national titles in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. Orton transferred to the University of Pennsylvania to pursue his doctorate in 1893 and received an enthusiastic welcome from the institution’s athletics department. While at Penn State, he stood out as an incredible athlete who excelled in hockey, cricket and soccer in addition to track and field. He also carried a reputation as an outstanding sportsman and brought great pride to the school until he completed his Ph. D. in 1896.

Orton remained active in track and field long after his varsity career was over, and was eventually called upon by his alma mater to join the American team at the upcoming Olympic Games.

Orton accepted the offer and flew to Paris in 1900. The Canadian athlete’s stellar performance at the Games earned him the top spot on the podium in the 2500 metre steeplechase as well as a third-place title in the 400 metre hurdles. However, since he’d travelled to Paris with Americans— Canada sent its first delegation to the following Games—his Canadian connection went unnoticed for decades. In fact, Orton himself died before the IOC finally recognized him as Canada’s first Olympic gold medallist.

It’s difficult to argue the fact that George Orton was an incredibly talented individual whose intellect rivalled his athletic prowess. While in Paris, he impressed many with his fluency in nine languages. Later, he became an accomplished author and member of the American Society of Poets. His published works include a history of track and field at the University of Pennsylvania and several tomes about running, as well as a series of popular youth novels promoting an active lifestyle.

Orton passed away at age 85 in Meredith, New Hampshire. While he spent much of his life in the United States, his crowning achievement was, like his place of birth, decidedly Canadian.

By Ken Rolheiser You have probably heard of the drunk who stumbles upon a baptism by a river. The minister turns to him and says, “Mister, are you ready to find Jesus?” “Yes sir,” he says. The minister dunks him under the water and pulls him right back up. “Have you found Jesus?” “Nooo!” After the third time he goes down for 30 seconds: “Have you found Jesus yet?” The drunk wipes his eyes and says, “Are you sure this is where he fell in?”

I am reminded of Stephen Leacock’s discussion on humour where he says primitive man laughed at someone falling through a hole in the ice. The cream of the joke was if he didn’t come back up. How far have we evolved since then?

Surely the crown jewel of our civilization is the birth of Christ and the discovery of Jesus’ teachings. We hold so much more love and empathy in our hearts.

There is a Cloverton Christmas version of Leonard Cohen’s “Broken Hallelujah” which includes these words: I’ve heard about this baby boy Who’s come to earth to bring us joy And I just want to sing this song to you …

With every breath I’m singing Hallelujah… A couple came to Bethlehem Expecting child, they searched the inn …

goes on. And the most wonderful part of Christmas is holding the baby in our arms and in our hearts.

As a grandfather I remember holding my first grandchild for more than an hour, sitting in peace and quiet, and contemplating the wonder of this little miracle that would grow and do wondrous things.

And I remember holding my first born in my hands and being filled with awe. A miracle made up of his parents and God’s marvellous mix of gifts and talents.

And now we can sit in wonder and awe and hold the Christmas baby in our hearts and in our arms and contemplate the real presence of Jesus. We can enjoy the peace and quiet and think of the wonderful ways we will share this with the world in the New Year.

We can make this a reality. When we share with the poor, the sick, the refugee, and those we meet on the way, then Jesus is present. When we donate to a cancer fund or visit the sick or the aged, we are being Christ.

We help those whom we find along the way.

Life in 2017 has got to be exciting.

Once we have found the Lord, life as a Christian has got to be the greatest opportunity to serve.

Our job is to “bring the good news to the afflicted”, to “bind up the broken hearted” (Isaiah 61:1). The world is looking to us and asking us if this is the Saviour. We can show them when we come to serve and not to judge.

We are the Public Relations Officers of the Church of Christ. So it does not matter whether we come from the7th Day Adventist, Anglican, Catholic, Orthodox, Pentecostal, United… we are God’s Church, serving others.

Praising with prepositions

By Linda Wegner All week I’ve tried to come up with some intriguing, or at least unique, start to this article; it is the first week of a new year, after all. I conducted a bit of on-line research, I mulled over snippets of my personal history that might be considered interesting and I even put out subtle hints to several friends. Nothing. So I’ve decided to just exhort each of us to make this a year of giving God our prepositional praise.

Here’s the simplest of explanations: using a juicy apple as an example I can say it is on the table, in a bowl on the table, beside your plate or under a paper serviette. On, in, beside or under are prepositions. In Psalm 150 the Psalmist David uses the same pattern. I call it worship from a prepositional perspective.

First, David exhorts us to praise God in His sanctuary and indeed, in the expanse of His creation. At first

glance we could limit and formalize our praise as strictly universal until remembering that when we invited Christ into our lives, our hearts became His personal sanctuary.

Praise, a Hebrew word for Hallelujah, should flood our private world; viewing His total work of creation should result in praise welling up within us.

Then, we are to praise Him for His mighty works and His excellent greatness. Does that mean we are to rejoice over the evil that confronts us and our world? No, but we do give praise because He has promised to be with us through it all.

Finally, David exhorts us to employ the “with” of worship and the list is long! All kinds of musical instruments and indeed, our very breath, are to be used to praise Him. The medium isn’t the only thing; it’s our response that counts.

Classroom Lockdown Kits

By Dave Robinson School officials are understandably jumpy these days. School shootings are unspeakably tragic, they get nationwide attention and no school administrator wants to be caught unprepared in the event the unthinkable happens in their school. Consequently most schools have developed a lockdown procedure which secures each classroom and isolates safe zones in the building. Some states have even enacted legislation mandating that schools develop a viable lockdown policy and conduct periodic drills, much the same as the fire drills with which we are all familiar.

Schools activate their lockdown plan for a variety of reasons. The primary reason is when the safety of the students is at stake. Another reason is when the police are conducting a drug search, usually with a specially trained dog and they don’t want several hundred kids milling about. Also if an event is occurring nearby the school, such as some kind of “person with a gun” situation, bank robbery or other incident which could be potentially hazardous to the students, the school will lockdown. Different schools do lockdowns differently. The first step is to secure the students in their classrooms, secure all entrances to the building and block visual access to the rooms. Students are directed to position themselves in an area of the room away from the door. Often the classroom lights are turned off.

Students are usually required to remain quiet for the duration of the lockdown.

Lockdowns can last from a few minutes to several hours. Not all classrooms are directly connected to a restroom. Can you see where I’m going with this?

Human nature being what it is, there will always be the kid who just finished off a 44 ounce Big Gulp moments before the lockdown was ordered. Other students may have skipped breakfast, then sometime during first period the school building locked down and now it’s two periods after lunch.

Newly marketed inventions such as door-jamming tools and other security devices are finding their way to classrooms. Some schools are designing classrooms to make it more difficult for intruders to see into the room.

Disaster preparedness doesn’t always mean stocking your own pantry. It is regrettable that we find ourselves turning schools into fortresses, but with the right amount of planning and supplies on hand, we can make our schools safer for our kids.

Public notice is hereby given that the Council of the Town of Redvers pursuant to Section 207 of The Planning and Development Act, 2007, intends to pass a bylaw to amend the Zoning Bylaw No. 167/1982 as hereinafter provided.

1. Map Change The zoning district map referred to in Part 5E: C1, shall be amended by rezoning from C1- Commercial District to R- Residential District.

The land is legally described as Lots 19 and 31 Block 2 Plan 49333 at #22 Broadway Street and shown in bold line and highlighted on the map forming part of this notice.

The purpose for the proposed amendment is to permit residential use on this property.

The Bylaw may be inspected by any interested person, at the Redvers Town Office, Monday to Friday (excluding statutory holidays) between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Council will hold a public hearing to receive submissions on the proposed bylaw at 7:30 p.m. on January 18, 2017 in the Council Chambers to hear any person or group that wants to comment on the proposed bylaw. Council will also consider any written submissions received at the hearing, or delivered to the indersigned at the Municipal Office before the hearing.

Wawota News Submitted by Myrna Olson Cher Badger spent the holidays with her daughter, Kelsey and family in Tijuana, Mexico. It was the coldest, wettest week of the year there. Cher enjoyed watching the grandchildren, Alina and Fabian open their gifts. She banked lots of cuddles to last until her next visit.

Les and Trena Van Meer, Kye and Breck and Lauren Wilson enjoyed an 8 day holiday to Orlando, California. The visited the Disney Theme parks and had an airship ride on the Jessup River.

Visiting with Moe and Saundra Corkish for Christmas were Pat and Kellie Corkish, of Two Hills and their grandchildren, Chad and Robynn Corkish from Calgary.

Tom and Cheryl Weatherald spent the holidays in Regina visiting with their sons and families. Christmas Eve was spent at Pat and Darcy’s with Connor, McKenna and Kenzie and several members of Darcy’s family. Christmas Day was with Michael and Sandra, Logan and Tyson along with Sandra’s mother, Mary Essen and Sandra’s sister and children from Saskatoon.

Ken and Anne Wilson left on December 13th and travelled to Abbotsford,BC where they visited with daughter Shannon Aleksic and granddaughter, Brooklyn. On their way home they stopped in to visit with Anne’s sister, Marjorie and homer Touchette and family in Calgary.

Kennedy/Langbank News Submitted by Doreen Cancade Happy New Year to all readers---There is a season for everything and a season for every activityóWilling workers have been making ice at the rink, keeping streets and driveways open. This past Friday members of the rink board had their first Friday night supper which was well attended (and I understand very good) this will continue every Friday evening until March 17thó During the month of December many folks enjoyed the Kennedy Langbank school concert, the United Church ladies supper (other folks from town were welcomed) the Kennedy Friendship Centre supper and entertainment, Blue Christmas service, to name a fewóboth Christmas church services were very well attended .

Dec. 24th a very special birthday party was held at the Kennedy Friendship Centre for Zita Sandor, yes her 90th. The family were all home and they had a very nice afternoon, with extended family and friends.

Congratulations to the proud grandparents Stewart and Connie DayleóDan and Danielle Frank of Regina had a boy weighing 9 lbs 3 oz on Dec. 20th, a brother for Ava and Porter.

Sympathy to the family and friends of the late Edith Boehmer of Saskatoon. She passed away on Christmas Day in her 100th year. A funeral service will be held in Saskatoon on Jan.7th and the burial in Wawota on Jan.8th.

Family and friends gathered at the Carl Johnson home on New Year’s Eve to celebrate the New Year and also the 50th wedding anniversary of Carl and Lynn. Their son, Rae was home from the States. Congratulations!

Elaine Fisk of Moosomin enjoyed Boxing Day at Val Puskas where they had a gift opening with their grandchildren.

Our company over the holidays included Harry and Stacey Heffernan, Sarah and Kate, Kale Broad, Kenton and Stacey Olson, Carter and Emmett all of Regina, and Jake and Carey Lamoureaux, Jack and Will.

Alida News Submitted by Edel Cowan Ernest and Dianne Lemieux spent the Christmas holidays at Lloydminster with their son Michael, his wife Lynsey and family returning home December 27.

Gail McLachlin spent the Christmas holidays visiting her family in Calgary – son Mitchel Cowie and Andrea Gohn, daughter Grace and Luke Mckenna and granddaughter Thea. She also visited with her parents Ken and June McLachlin in Cabri.

The Alida community extends sincere sympathy to Marilyn Larsen on the death of her sister-inlaw Gloria Larsen (late of Redvers, formally of Parkman) who passed away December 28, 2016 at the age of 82 years, in Weyburn. Gloria will be remembered for her continuous work in the Redvers Hospital as the “lady-of-many-talents” – she worked in the office, did lab work and took X-rays, drove ambulance and later the handi-van. She was an avid curler, taking in many bonspiels in the area as well as in Brandon and Regina. Gloria was also involved in municipal government, being on council for many years and also the mayor of Redvers. She will surely be missed and fondly remembered.

to the Hull families on the death of Dorothy Hull of Carnduff (formally of Alida) on December 29, 2016 in the Gainsborough Health Centre. Dorothy had just celebrated her 90th birthday December 24. Funeral service will be held Carnduff United Church January 6.

Congratulations and Best wishes to Michele Boutin and Cody Anderson who were married in Regina on December 31, 2016 and held their wedding celebrations at the Delta Hotel.

There were many family members, neighbors and friends who travelled to Regina to attend the Boutin/Anderson wedding and enjoying the ringing in of the New Year.

Canada lost their game against the United States, but they now in the quarter finals where they meet CzechRepublic this Monday night – it’s do or die for them – Go Canada Go. Wow what a game that turned out to be, we did come out on top with a score of 5-3. Canada now plays in the semi-finals against Sweden on Wednesday evening – Go Canada Go – let’s bring the gold home.
