2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games celebrate winter’s best in North Battleford NORTH BATTLEFORD, SK (February 25): After an exciting 7 days of sport and culture that showcased the best young athletes in the province, the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games have officially come to an end. From February 18th-24th, North Battleford hosted 1,800 athletes, coaches, managers, officials and mission staff from over 300 communities. Over 1,200 volunteers from the Battlefords and surrounding area donated their time and energies towards ensuring that the province’s largest biennial multisport games impressed both the participants as well as the thousands of spectators and family members of athletes who took in the Games.

Games Manager Nicole Clow was left smiling after Saturday’s Closing Ceremony concluded. “We feel that we’ve left a big legacy in the community, both in sport facility and equipment upgrades and in civic pride. It was just a ton of fun -- the athletes were happy, and that’s the biggest goal.”

The week-long event saw 1,356 athletes compete in 17 different winter sports, with youth from the ages of 11-17 making up the majority of participants. For most, this was their first exposure to the exciting and fast-paced atmosphere of a multisport games. For many, it will serve as a stepping stone to a higher level of competition. “This week these athletes have participated in something bigger than their sport,” said Chantelle Patrick, Chairperson of the Saskatchewan Games Council. “They represented their entire District team, and they represented them well. It’s our hope that these Games have challenged, motivated and inspired these athletes towards a successful future in sport and in life.”

The timing of the Saskatchewan Winter Games coincided with the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang -- an inspiring look ahead for the young athletes competing in North Battleford. Three of Team Canada’s 2018 Olympians got their start at the Saskatchewan Games: White City’s Marsha Hudey, Speed Skating; Regina’s Kali Christ, Speed Skating; and Saskatoon’s Emily Clark, Olympic silver medalist in Hockey.

For the first time in Saskatchewan Games history, a parasport was included in the sport calendar.

Prince Albert’s Krystle Shewchuk and Cherish Nontell of Christopher Lake competed in Para-Nordic Skiing and were coached by ten-time Paralympic medalist Colette Bourgonje.

While countless personal best results and performances were achieved by individual athletes at the Games, the Saskatchewan Games sees nine different sport Districts compete against each other for two major honours: the Games Flag and the Joe Griffith Trophy. The Games Flag is an impressive award given to the District who achieves the best overall performance at the Games by accumulating the most flag points. The amount of flag points a District team collects is determined by the scoring system for each sport; teams and individuals are awarded points based on their final placings. In a repeat of its success from the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games in Estevan, Team Saskatoon took home the title with a total of 108 medals and 184 flag points.

Comparison is made on a summer-to-summer and winter-to-winter basis. With an improvement of 15 flag points from the 2014 Winter Games in Prince Albert, Team South East was awarded the trophy. Team South East boasts athletes from Weyburn, Estevan, Balgonie and surrounding areas.

In addition to being an exceptional amateur sporting event, the Saskatchewan Games provide a spotlight for the host community’s spectacular volunteer dedication and civic pride. “We owe an enormous thank you to all of our volunteers,” said Games Co-Chair David Schell. “We couldn’t have done any of this without them -- they stepped up in a huge way to showcase our community to the entire province.” Over 1,200 people from the Battlefords and surrounding areas volunteered for the Games. This includes both the volunteers during Games time

and the volunteer Host Organizing Committee, who spent the last two years planning the Games.

The 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games will leave behind a half million dollar legacy of upgraded sporting venues and equipment in the Battlefords, as well as a trained and enthusiastic volunteer corps. “One of the goals of the Saskatchewan Games is to enhance community development through a sport legacy of upgraded equipment, facilities, experienced officials, cultural understanding and appreciation, and a core group of volunteers,” added Patrick. “The Saskatchewan Games Council is very impressed with the legacy left behind in the Battlefords.”

The next edition of the Saskatchewan Games will be in Lloydminster, who will host the 2020 Summer Games. The Saskatchewan Games will celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2022.

The cost of epilepsy: Appeal to assist Daytona Maygard Lynne Bell

Three-year-old Daytona Maygard is “full of personality, strong-willed and stubborn,” according to her mother, Jade Maygard.

“She loves babies, kids, animals and people.”

Daytona also has Primary Generalized Epilepsy and her ongoing journey through the medical system has

resulted in a significant financial challenge for her parents, Blaize and Jade Maygard of Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation. As a result, Jade has launched a GoFundMe page, hoping to raise $5,000 - in an effort to assist with the family’s expenses related to their youngest child’s illness.

“I really didn’t want to do this,” says Jade.

hours to convince me and she said if I didn’t do it, she would. I’m a proud person. I work.

My husband is employed, but there’s been no work,” says Jade.

“We’ve tried everything before asking for help, but we also have bills that are falling behind.”

Many of Daytona’s medical expenses aren’t covered by insurance “because her epilepsy is a pre-existing health condition,” says Jade.

“So we pay for ambulance rides, medication and medical travel.”

“For example, one of her meds costs $200 a month - and that’s if she isn’t sick.”

“In the last week of February, she has three appointments that are 45 minute to two-hour drives away. And in early March, she’ll spend a week in the hospital in Saskatoon,” says Jade.

“She’ll spend her fourth birthday there.”

Daytona is also battling additional effects related to her illness.

“I can’t name everyone, but Trish from the Arcola Pharmacy has gone above and beyond for us,” says Jade.

“And this whole experience has made me want more people to know about epilepsy. Until something like this happens in your family, you just don’t realize the affect it has.”

“(Daytona) requires attention all of the time, but we love her to pieces,” adds Jade.

The Carlyle RCMP detachment will hold a Town Hall Meeting in Carlyle, Tuesday, March 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Carlyle Memorial Hall.

Detachment Commander Staff Sgt. Darren Simons says: “We’re hoping to do three other Town Hall meetings - in addition to the Carlyle event - within the detachment area. We want to hear from our communities about their concerns and we encourage everyone to attend. “ “It is our desire that the RCMP focuses our efforts in the proper direction to meet the expectations of the communities we serve,” explains Simons. “We are hoping that this meeting and subsequent meetings throughout our detachment area will give community members the opportunity to provide input in developing policing priorities.”

From Thursday, Feb. 15 to Thursday, Feb. 22, members of the Carlyle detachment dealt with 47 calls to service.

911 Carlyle RCMP received two RID (Report Impaired Driver) calls via 911. One impaired driver was located by police on a grid road south of Carlyle after almost side-swiping another vehicle. An RCMP vehicle also sustained some damage during the pursuit of this motorist. As a result, a male was charged with two counts of impaired driving (one for a blood alcohol level over 80 mg.), dangerous driving and breach of undertaking.

A second RID call resulted in police locating the vehicle in question. This incident is still under investigation by RCMP. Members received a call reporting unwanted and intoxicated individuals at a residence in the detachment area. This incident is still under investigation.

Police received a call regarding an individual choking.

Alcohol-related offence(s) Members located an impaired driver within the detachment area.

Assault Police responded to a report of an assault within the Carlyle area. A 26-year-old male was arrested, charged and held for an appearance in court. Subsequently, this individual was charged with assault, assault with a weapon and obstructing police. After his court appearance, this individual remains in custody. During this incident, a 29-year-old female was also charged with three counts of breach of undertaking. She appeared in court and was released from custody.

Assistance Members responded to a call about an intoxicated individual. The caller was concerned about this individual’s safety and well-being. Members located the individual and ensured this person was safe.

RCMP assisted a bailiff regarding information.

Members provided assistance to a police service in British Columbia by serving subpoenas in the detachment area.

RCMP members met with representatives from the R.M. of Walpole as a part of their Crime Prevention Outreach program.

False alarm An alarm went off in error at a Carlyle area business.

Harassment Members investigated and dealt with a complaint of an individual sending harassing messages.

The suspect was warned by police and the messages have since ceased.

Mental Health Act RCMP members assisted EMS responders in the detachment area with three situations involving the Mental Health Act. Municipal bylaw(s) RCMP assisted the Town of Redvers with regards to a municipal bylaw.

Traffic offences/Collisions A single-vehicle rollover north of Manor resulted in minor injuries for both of the vehicle’s occupants.

An unoccupied vehicle was damaged during a hit and run in Wawota.

A motorist received a warning from police for accessing a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle.

The fine for this offence is $280.

RCMP received a report of a vehicle abandoned on a grid road.

A motorist was fined $230 for failing to stop at a posted stop sign.

A driver was charged with failing to wear a seatbelt.

Several motorists received fines and/or warnings for speeding, with fines reaching a high of $352.

Two individuals received warnings for towing trailers without valid registration.

Several warnings and/or inspection tickets were issued during this period, including: a vehicle with no clear view from the front or sides, a vehicle with auxilary lamps mounted higher than the vehicle’s head lamps, inadequate tail lights, inadequate head lamps and improper window tint.

Uttering threats After receiving a report of uttering threats by youths, members investigated and issued a warning to those involved.

Carlyle Town Council held their regular meeting Wednesday, Feb. 21 at the Carlyle Civic Centre.

Council’s next meeting will take place at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 7 at the Civic Centre.

Waterworks The Town of Carlyle received grades of “very good” during the province’s annual Waterworks Compliance Inspection, with the facility’s operations and records singled out for praise.

Audit The Town of Carlyle’s 2017 audit has been completed by Cogent Chartered Professional Accountants LLP and was found to be satisfactory, with a final report to come.

Bear Claw Community Development Corporation The Town received notice that the Bear Claw Community Development Corporation has received funding and will be accepting applications for funding both new and continuing projects from non-profit groups and agencies from: Ochapowace, White Bear, the Village of Kenosee Lake, Carlyle, Manor and the R.M. of Moose Mountain No. 63.

RCMP Town Hall The Carlyle RCMP detachment will be hosting a Town Hall meeting, 6:30 p.m.,Tuesday, March 6 at the Carlyle Memorial Hall. This meeting is open to everyone and the discussion will focus on policing priorities in the community.

By Linda Wegner The purpose of the entire thirty-one chapters of Proverbs is to give instruction for wise and godly living and although I have no intention of addressing most of the topics, this week I’ll look briefly at the matter of self-control and avoiding extremes.

They’re also some of the bad habits I’ve had to work hard at mastering – just so you don’t think I’m pointing fingers!

In chapter 23, Solomon points out a number of necessary things that we humans often take to extremes, namely food, work and budgeting. As necessary as they are, it’s when they get out of control that they cause problems. All three, self-indulgence, over working for wrong purposes and the matter of how we spend money, are essential and a blessing when kept in right order.

Regarding self indulgence, in the first verse of this chapter Solomon speaks about the dangers of over eating. “While dining with a ruler, pay attention

to what is put before you; if you are a big eater, put a knife to your throat.” In this case l am not commenting on the warning given regarding our dinner companions (that’s another subject) but rather on our appetite. I know from personal experience that great harm can result from gluttony and thankfully, as a testimony to God’s help, I’ve been learning that lesson and have shed the excess weight I carried for so long.

Over-working simply for the purpose of amassing wealth often takes its toll on health, family and other relationships while diverting attention from the really important things of life. “Riches certainly make themselves wings,” Solomon noted, then added, on the other hand “drowsiness will clothe a man with rags”. Wise handling of finances with the goal of pleasing God is essential in these days of easy credit.

Mostly quiet on baseball’s free agent front sports time-out with

Bruce Penton ‘Collusion’ is a hot word these days in the world of American politics, but it’s also being whispered around Major League Baseball as dozens of solid major leaguers wait patiently for their agents to strike a deal with a team willing to shell out millions of dollars for their services.

Actually, ‘collusion’ is a word to be avoided among Major League teams, because it’s a word that cost owners millions of dollars in the 1980s after an arbitrator found them guilty of deceitful practices that kept free agents from signing massive contracts.

Today, the ‘C’ word has been replaced by what owners call the Double C — cost consciousness — to explain why so many free agents are still unsigned. In a normal off-season, a player coming off a 25home run season would be wined and dined by a number of MLB teams before bringing his talents, his family, his agent, his chauffeur, his masseuse, his banker, his financial advisor and his pizza delivery man to his new city. Invariably, the player — a veteran, obviously, because young players haven’t built up resumes to command large contracts — performs well below expectations because: a) his talents are eroding with age; b) he has

so much money in the bank that motivation to excel is, except in rare instances, lacking.

Team owners are in the business because they love baseball, but even moreso because they love making money, and the realization has occurred to many of them that their team might be able to contend without expensive free agents, going instead with lower-paid younger players.

But what team couldn’t use the services of slugger Carlos Gonzales (32 years old and a .288 career batting average)? How about pitching? Jake Arrieta, coming off a 14-10 season with the Cubs, is available, as is Lance Lynn (71 wins in the last five seasons with the Cardinals). Slugger J.D. Martinez, 45 homers with Detroit and Arizona last year, was ignored until Feb. 19 when finally signed by Boston.

Columnist Greg Cote in the Miami Herald ripped the new Marlins ownership and Derek Jeter, their front man, for breaking up a potentially competitive team for the sake of profits, leaving the fans out to dry. Olympic silver for Canadian women’s team

It was an exciting game… I was up until like 2 a.m. watching, and hoping that the Canadian Women’s Hockey Team could clench gold at the Olympics. It was a great game. People say women’s hockey isn’t physical because checking isn’t allowed… but it was definitely a physical game and the refs were (from Kelly Running my vantage point) letting both Observer Staff sides away with a little bit.

Although ice dancer Scott Moir was irate in the stands when the refs didn’t call something against the Americans… somehow Poulin got away with a heavy hit in front of our net with no call.

But, when all was said and done – overtime, shootout, and sudden death shootout – it was the Americans that ended a 20-year gold medal drought in the sport… and to be honest I think they deserved the win, they were flying on the ice, while Canada was looking a little flat footed. There were still standouts on the Canadian side of things, like our goalie Shannon Szabados, on defence Reneta Fast, and our captain, Marie-Philip Poulin. Also, that goal

by Haley Irwin off a pass from Blayre Turnbull was a thing of beauty.

It’s too bad that at this level a tie after a single overtime is determined by an individuals’ skill competition. However, having said that both sides did a phenomenal side in the shootout, that goal by Melodie Daoust was sublime. She came in wide on the right, came over for a forehand shot and when the goalie went down brought the puck around to her backhand nestling the puck in the net with one hand as she went tumbling over the American goalie. It was a thing of finesse.

What really has people talking, however, was when Jacelyne Larocque took off her medal. Now a similar thing happened at the World Juniors, when Sweden’s captain took off his medal and actually chucked it away.

Now, although these two instances are similar, I do find them quite different. In a team sport, a silver medal means you lost… you earned your way to the final, but you don’t earn a silver medal, you lose to win it. It’s not like figure skating where each one of the people receiving medals earns them – women’s figure skating: no one fell, each of the medalists had small wobbles or mistakes, but they were by far the deserving medal recipients – each medal earned based on their merits.

Also at that kind of level, you’ve been working towards gold for the past four years and the range of emotions you’d feel as you represent your country would be huge… after all you’d feel like you let down your teammates, your coach, your family, your friends, and your entire country. So, wearing a medal that you got for losing that game would be tough.

The difference between the two events, however, is that Larocque simply held the medal, while the Swedish captain literally tossed it away. Larocque has explained that she just couldn’t appreciate it in that moment, but in time she will because it is still an accomplishment.

Although, yes, it’s disrespectful in my opinion to have removed it, I can understand why she would. She never tossed it away and she apologized, explaining herself afterwards, which I think takes courage. You could just avoid the press and not bring up those emotions you were feeling at that time again; but, she chose to confront what she did which is respectable.

Twel ve people we cannot do without I was working near a teacher who was marking first semester final exams. He set a paper to the side not knowing what to do with it.

The student had not achieved a passing grade which meant her parents would not allow her to continue in extracurricular activities. She had pretty amazing talents she enjoyed putting to use in those activities, which would no My Outlook Shelley Luedtke longer be an option if she didn’t pass all her classes. Yet he knew he couldn’t submit a mark she hadn’t earned. He shared how difficult it was making a decision that would have that kind of impact.

A coach I worked with was faced with benching an athlete just as the team was preparing for regional competition. She had to decide if she could deal with the rule violation in a manner other than sitting him out and hindering the team’s possibility of advancing to provincials. She explained how hard it was having the fate of the athletes in her hands.

In homes across our nation people are receiving a summons for jury duty. It is a weighty responsibility that we ask people--people like you and me--to take on. If selected, they are put in the position of holding the fate of someone in their hands.

I was summoned to serve several years ago but asked to be excused because of job responsibilities and medical issues I was dealing with at the time. It’s not something I felt good about then--or now--but the reality warranted it. But to be honest, if I were summoned again I would feel conflicted.

During a trial a juror is asked to listen to hours of testimony by witnesses, arguments by lawyers and instructions by the judge. Then a group of strangers from disparate walks of life must enter a room and come to a unanimous decision. When it’s all over, regardless of what they have heard, seen or discussed, they are not allowed to tell anyone about it. Or explain their decision. Or defend themselves.

Some jurors says their experience left them with anxiety, depression and other ongoing mental health problems. A lawsuit launched by a juror following a 2014 murder trial argued that the gruesome evidence he had to consider left him with trauma, and

little help in dealing with it. It led the Ontario government to establish a Juror Support Program a year ago to provide free counselling to jurors who request it.

A jury member in a high profile American case (where jurors are allowed to speak about their experience) described her frustration that after listening to three weeks of testimony followed by careful deliberations and a decision led by the rule of law, she was accused of discrimination and labelled racist by people who knew nothing about her. A juror in another case said he applied the law to the evidence his jury was given, and even though he disliked the defendant, he felt the prosecution had not proved their case. Now this man is having trouble eating, sleeping and focussing because of the strain of the backlash he has had to endure.

It is not surprising that “how to get out of jury duty” is a frequently searched topic. This should alarm us. Recent trials in Canada have unleashed a torrent of opinion regarding our justice system and outrage over decisions juries have made. Yet many of the people criticizing them are not the ones who sat through days of a trial paying careful attention to all that was being said and then coming to a decision based on what was presented. It’s pretty easy deliberating the verdict outside the court room on what we think the case involved. We need to be concerned about the lack of accurate reporting by some media outside of the province in which the case took place, and the way jury members have been talked about by people who were not there. How can be possibly encourage future jurors to serve?

Reforms to our justice system need to be looked at continually, and we have to find ways to address how job security, lack of transportation, previous convictions and peremptory challenge affect an individual’s ability to serve on a jury. But in the process of doing so, we need to stop vilifying the very people that are trying to work within the system we currently have. They have the fate of people’s lives in their hands.

Before more voices are added to the cries of condemnation against a group of people who carried out a duty most of us will never have to, let’s remember that the strength of any system is dependent upon the people willing to step up and do their part.

That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money

Five ways to figure out your risk tolerance Every investor knows that risk and return go together. When it comes to risk tolerance, though, everyone’s different and how much you can endure on the downside depends on several factors, including years to retirement, lifestyle and more.

Sandra Sigurdson, Investors Group Director of Strategic Investment Planning, says, “Risk tolerance is subjective. For some investors, losing a few thousand dollars is no big deal.

For others dropping even a couple of hundred dollars is a big deal.”

Risk tolerance is also both financial and emotional. “For financial, it’s about needing to make the investments that meet the objectives of a long-term financial plan,” she says.

“For emotional it’s about making investments that don’t stress you out and negatively affect other aspects of your life.”

Here are five things to consider when determining your risk tolerance.

Do you understand the market?

“If Alpha and Beta are all Greek to you,

consider wading in slowly, until you grow your confidence and understanding,” says Sigurdson.

Have you experienced losses?

If you’ve been through a downturn before, think about how it made you feel. “Did it cause you to pull back on your investments and perhaps sit on the sidelines or move into “safer” investments?

Did it cause you emotional turmoil or were you able to stick to your plan, participate in the recovery and get on with your financial life?” asks Sigurdson. “Answering those questions will give you a good read on your risk tolerance.”

Are you afraid of uncertainty? “Your tolerance for uncertainty in your work life and the people you choose as friends are good indicators of your tolerance for uncertainty in the value of your investments,” she says.

Do you have other money elsewhere? If you have other sources of income, like a pension or maybe a sprawling estate you can one day sell, then you may be able to take on more risk

in your portfolio.

Are you aware of what you can lose?

Research has found that if you put potential losses in percentage terms, you won’t really be able to evaluate how much of decline you can stomach. Put it in dollar terms instead. “Instead of a 30% drop, tell yourself that it’s a $30,000 drop,” she says. “How would that feel?

What would you do?”

Sigurdson says that there are ways to maximize the potential for higher returns in your investment portfolio and manage risk at the same time. “Spread out the risk by diversifying your portfolio and use asset allocation to assemble the mix of investments that best suits your goals and risk tolerance.”

How to deal with a fever Humans’ body temperature normally hovers around 37 °C. It’s generally a bit lower in the morning and a bit higher in late afternoon. A body temperature above 38 °C (100.4 °F), measured orally, is considered a fever. Fevers mainly occur as a symptom of infection and are self-limiting in most cases.

If you have a fever, it’s important that you get plenty of rest and drink lots of water (avoid icecold water, though) to replenish fluids lost from sweating. Acetaminophen, ibuprofen and cold compresses can also be used to reduce unpleasant symptoms. Dress lightly and turn down the thermostat slightly (or turn on a fan) for further comfort.

If the fever is high (39.5 °C or higher), persists for more than 72 hours, occurs in a child younger than six months old or

Sargent to play collegiate volleyball with Valley City Vikings Observer Staff

For the past eight years Taylor Sargent (grade 12 at Gordon F. Kells High School), daughter of Dean and Shelley, has been honing her skills on the volleyball court. Her determination and dedication to the sport recently led to bigger things and a future playing volleyball for Valley City State University in North Dakota.

“I have always loved the team aspect of playing volleyball,” Taylor said of the sport and why she’s been working towards this goal over the years. “There is no better feeling then playing your best with your team and having your hard work pay off. It has been my goal for a long time to be able to play volleyball after high school.”

Coach of the Valley City Vikings, Adam Longmore, announced the momentous occasion on Wednesday, Feb. 14, on the Valley City State University Volleyball website welcoming her for the 2018 season.

“Taylor is an exceptional young lady that we are happy to have join our program. She has excelled both on the court and in the classroom. She exhibits all of the qualities we look for in the student-athletes we recruit, athletically, as well as in character,” said Longmore. “Taylor will provide some depth for us on the pins which we really need. We are excited to get her in the gym and begin coaching her. She hits a heavy ball and will flourish in the type of system we run offensively.”

For Taylor the opportunity is an exciting one.

“I am looking forward to a new experience and opportunity to further my academic career and play a higher level of volleyball,” Taylor explained. “When I went for a tour I had the opportunity to meet the 18031JJ0

While attending Valley City, Taylor will not only be focused on volleyball, but will also be taking Business Administration.

Over the years, Taylor has also seen success

in Track and Field and has garnered the honour of “Athlete of the Year,” for the last four years.

This past season with her high school team, she helped the Cougars earn a 4th place at the 3A Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association Provincials. She has also received numerous academic awards over the years, which makes her an ideal pickup for collegiate volleyball.

University is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and a conference member of the North Star Athletic Association. The Viking volleyball team posted a 15-13 overall record during the 2017 season and finished fourth in the NSAA standings.

Looking forward to the future, Taylor made a special statement of appreciation to everyone who has supported her over the years: “A special thank you to my family and friends for their support and encouragement that they have given me as I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.

PureChem Cougars’ season comes to a close Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle PureChem Cougars put up a battle throughout the season, able to make their way into the final seed of Big Six Playoff action. They came up against the tough, seeded as first place after the regular season, Carnduff Red Devils.

Although the PureChem Cougars had lost the first game of the series against them, they were hoping to take the Red Devils to three, but lost out in a tough fought 1-4 game.

Carlyle’s single goal was posted by Brett Turgeon off an assist from Kelly Currie in the third.

Elsewhere in the league the Redvers Rockets took two games to beat the Huskies, Bienfait earned two wins over the Midale Mustangs, and the returning

champions – Wawota Flyers – beat out the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings to reach the semifinals.

The Flyers will now take on the Red Devils in a best of 5 match-up, while the Redvers Rockets will battle the Bienfait Coalers.

Redvers hosted Bienfait on Friday, Feb. 23, which saw an intense game erupt with a 6-4 win for the Redvers Rockets.

Future games are scheduled for Friday, March 2, in Bienfait and Sunday, March 4, in Redvers.

Carnduff visited Wawota on Sunday, Feb. 25, where the home team put up a fight, but the Red Devils earned a 4-0 win.

MANOR SKATE-A-THON The “Youngest Skater” went to Ruby Sharpen.

Manor Skate-a-thon was a big success on Monday, Feb. 19. Presley Onufreychuk (third from right) wanted to host a fun day for youth while giving back to the community. Cody Thul was awarded the “Oldest Skater” award at the Manor Skate-a-thon.

River Onufreychuk earned “Top Fundraiser” by raising $235. The next highest were Nathan and Kyle Bye, who each raised $170, and Tucker and Ryder Seabrook who both brought in $70.

A total of $2,500 was raised at the Manor Skate-a-thon for the rink.

Darcy and Tania Easton, Jack and partner, Julia headed to Bali, Indonesia for three-week holiday with Tania’s parents and her sister for a family holiday. On their way home they stopped in Australia to visit other members of Tania’s family and Barry and Nicole Easton and family.

Ross and Joanne Corkish and Nathan Oliver of Wapella travelled to Lethbridge to do some work for Joanne’s uncle this past week.

Sympathy to Roger Boutin and Lisa Lincoln on the passing of Roger’s father. He passed away on Feb. 15. He was a resident of Deerview and was 82 years old. His funeral was on Feb. 19 at the Roman Catholic Church in Carlyle.

Congratulations to Ben and Christa Taylor on the birth of a daughter on Feb. 10. She weighed 7 lbs. 6 oz. and has been named Naomi Lorraine.

Congratulations to Jeff Corkish, the former head coach of the Hastings, MN girls hockey team for 17 years. On Feb. 22, at a ceremony held in St. Paul’s, Jeff was inducted into the Minnesota Hock-

ey Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He stepped down in the 2015-16 season as he has three children all active in hockey.

Congratulations to Kristie Whitcome and Jay Leader who were married on Feb. 24 in Mexico.

Alida News Submitted by Edel Cowan

Alida Community extends their condolences to the Dancey families on the death of Robert Arley Dancey who passed away Jan. 21 in Regina at the age 81 years. Arley was born and raised in the Nottingham area. Memorial service will be held at a later date.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the Boutin families on the passing of Robert Boutin (Manor).

He passed away Feb. 15 at the Deer View Lodge in Wawota, at the age of 82 years. He was born on the family farm near Cantal and later farmed near Manor. His funeral mass was held Feb. 20 in Carlyle with interment in Manor Cemetery.

Donald and Shelley Boutin spent a few days from Feb. 15 to 19 in Toronto where they visited with their daughter Aimee.

Shelly Cowan and daughter Ainsley visited in Minot from Feb. 17 to 19 with the Nilsen family.

On Feb. 17 Joyce, Jackie George (Redvers), Pat and Shirley Toby (Creston, BC) met up with Gray and Edel Cowan at Marcy’s Diner and enjoyed visiting and having lunch together. Then on Sunday Pat and Shirley visited at the Cowan farm for a few hours, enjoyed afternoon coffee and later a tour around the area which included the Bailey farmstead.

Sunday breakfast on Feb. 18 had Kitchen Group # 2 at the helm and they served up 44 breakfasts – way to go guys and gals.

Next breakfast will see Kitchen Group # 3 at the helm. Will they or won’t they? That is the question – the Breakfast Challenge is on.

The following families who enjoyed a couple of days skiing at Asessippi on Feb. 20 and 21 were Parry, Lynette, Wendal and Thomas Peet, Jason, April Junk and family, Neil, Melissa Gervais and family, Ken, Diane, Julie and Sadie Potapinski.

Claire and Alice Mowchenko, Estevan spent a few days of their school break with their grandparents, Brian and Margaret Peet. They also spent time with other members of the Peet family before returning home on Feb. 23.

Feb. 24 proved to be a very busy and exciting day at the Alida Rink – It was the Ladies Bonspiel.

There were eight teams that entered in the oneday bonspiel. They were as follows: The Alida All Stars (Shandi McMillan, Cheryl Boutin, Joey Mailhiot, Donna Fraser); The Furry Friends (Lyndsey Jensen, Sarah Purvis, Samantha Peet, Kelli Maher); The

Old Fogeys (Margaret Peet, Jean Ball, Edel Cowan, Brenda Junk); The Bare-naked Ladies (April Junk, Sheri Patton, Diane Potapinski, Lesa Bendtsen); Marcy’s Diner (Marcia Gervais, Nicole Gervais, daughter Zadie, and Vashti Wardrobe, both girls 12 years of age); The Superheroes (Erika Carlsen, Leanne Dubuc, Shelly Cowan, Trisha Schulhauser); Nipples, Arms & Legs (Michele Anderson, Skylar Mailhiot, Chelsey Mailhiot, Stephanie Campbell); Team Canada (Lynette Peet, Melissa Gervais, Cheryl Harrison, Trudy Boettcher). These eight teams all came dressed in their best clad attire for the event. This surely caused much laughter. The day began with Kitchen Group # 3 serving up 31 breakfasts, which included most of the curlers. The curling games then got underway at 9:00 am when the first four teams made their way onto the ice. The Old Fogeys were even able to make it out onto the ice okay with the assistance of their canes and a walker. They were particularly pleased that these were only six-end games. As one can imagine there were many crazy antics by the participants which also caused much laughter both on and off the ice.

Before the final games were played a delicious stuffed-pork supper was served to over 90 guests which included the curlers and was enjoyed by everyone. This was followed by a Loonie Auction which brought in

approximately $1065.

The curling soon got underway once again with final games in each event. There was a slight change in the line-up, as the Old Fogeys were now out of steam, so they had a substitute team step up to take their place. The Furry Friends shed their costumes and donned on the Old Fogey’s attire thus becoming The Old Fogeys (Lyndsey Jensen, Sarah Purves, Sam Peet, Diane Potapinski) – appreciate the assistance girls. The results of the bonspiel were as follows A-side: The Alida All Stars placed first by defeating the Nipples, Arms & Legs team; 3rd Bare-naked Ladies, 4th Marcy’s Diner. B-side: The Old Fogeys (substitute team) won first defeating Team Canada, 3rd Furry Friends and

4th Superheroes. A great time was had by everyone in attendance – both audience and curlers.

The Curling Club greatly appreciates everyone’s support. Here’s hoping that this will become a yearly event now and that we will see you there.

Sunday breakfast on Feb. 25 had Kitchen Group # 3 at the helm and they served up approximately 50 breakfasts – way to go guys and gals. During the breakfast members of the Alida Rec Board made the draw for the elegant “Gourmet Dinner for 8” and the winner was Daryl Harrison (Alida).

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a dear husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. Robert Boutin, of Manor, SK, died peacefully to eternal life on Thursday, February 15th at Deer View Lodge in Wawota, SK at the age of 82 years. Dad was born on the family farm near Cantal, SK on April 10, 1935, son of Alcide and Flore-Emma Boutin (née Donais). He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Solange (née Paulhus); his daughter Diane (Gilles-Brett, Courtney, Jaime-Lynn), his three sons, Roger (Lisa-Ty), Edward (Elaine-Cody), and Brian (Julie-Amélie, Jonah). He is also survived by his sisters, Armande, Irène, Isabelle (Ken), Gisèle (Greg), Hélène (René), and Eveline (Roger); his brother Wilfrid (Alyse), as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Robert is predeceased by his parents; his step mother Bernadette; close uncle Allyre; his sister Jeannette (Hervé & Alex); his brother Lionel (Marie Anna) & brothers-in-law Howard, Laurier. Dad raised his family on a mixed farm of grain and cattle. Dad enjoyed socializing with all those who crossed his path in town at the café and in the countryside. Dad was a model of �inding balance between family, leisure and work. He spent the later years of his life on road trips camping, dancing or jamming with his fellow musical friends. Robert spent his �inal years at the Deer View Lodge in Wawota and appreciated the support of the health care professionals who cared for him and all the friends and family that visited him. He will remembered for his jolly manner, contagious smile, and his gift of conversation. Prayers were said on Monday, February 19th, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, February 20th, 2018 at 2 :00 p.m. Both services were held at Church of Our Lady in Carlyle, Saskatchewan with Father Yodel Cereno celebating. Interment followed at Manor Cemetery, Manor Saskatchewan. In lieu of �lowers, a donation may be made to the Health and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan at www.hsf.ca.

Marlene Caroline Hannah (Fessler)

Surrounded by her family, Marlene passed peacefully to God’s arms at the Moose Mountain Lodge in Carlyle Saskatchewan, at the age of 82. Marlene is predeceased by her parents, John and Vera Fessler, sisters, Thelma (Cliff) Elder, Addie (Bob) Ferguson, Hazel (Ken) Coward and her brother, Bill (Phyllis) Fessler. She is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Dale Hannah; son, Richard (Denise), Rick’s daughter, Cara Leigh (Rob) and their children, Chase and Paige and Denise’s son, Dontae; daughter, Heather (James) and their daughter, Hannah as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Marlene grew up in Drinkwater, Saskatchewan surrounded by family and wheat �ields. She met the love of her life Dale, while hanging over the hockey boards at the ice rink in the nearby town of Roleau, Saskatchewan. They were married February 19, 1955. Marlene was a stay at home Mom who prided herself on keeping a clean house, cooking and looking after her family. Marlene excelled in this role, and was a wonderful loving wife, mother and grandma. Marlene and Dale enjoyed many happy summers at White Bear Lake, where they hosted and attended numerous celebrations, golf tournaments, and bon �ires. Marlene loved to have fun, play the piano and sing. For many years Marlene and Dale spent winters in Texas and Arizona enjoying their retirement. Their prayers were answered when the grandchildren arrived. Dressing up, singing, going to the beach, boat rides and parades were shared during this chapter of life. In Marlene’s last years, she resided at Moose Mountain Lodge where she received the best of care. Our family is so grateful to all the staff there. Thank you for all your kindness.

The Memorial Service for Marlene will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. from Carlyle United Church, Carlyle, Saskatchewan with Sandy Dalziel and Jaclyn Evaschesen of�iciating. Next Winter Olympics are to be held in Beijing, China in 2022 but first comes the Summer Olympics in 2020 in Tokyo. Go Canada Go. Farming and technology

By Calvin Daniels It should be stated from the outset that I am generally pro technology.

While there have been missteps at times, in general technology, especially in agriculture has taken the industry forward.

While we sometimes fail to remember, the first iron plow was a technological step forward from its wooden predecessor, and a huge step forward in terms of soil tillage.

And while I am still a huge fan of the draft horse, I in no way lament the emergence of tractor technology and what it meant in terms of farming.

The combine is a huge step forward from the stationary threshing machine, direct seeding technology was a huge step in preventing soil erosion, and geo-mapping has been an aid in the most productive applications of fertilizer.

And I do not doubt as the world population grows and land acres capable of growing traditional crops decline, we will become more reliant on technological advancements to meet our demand for food.

But there are times I admit to shuddering when I read about the cutting edge of technology and just where it is headed.

In this space in the past I have written about worldwide concerns that bee populations have appeared to be in decline.

As recently as last August, time.com wrote that the problem might be reversing itself writing in an online story; “The number of U.S. honeybees, a critical component to agricultural production, rose in 2017 from a year earlier, and deaths of the insects attributed to a mysterious malady that’s affected hives in North America and Europe declined, according a U.S. Department of Agriculture honeybee health survey.”

looked at as an immediate positive, but since we don’t seem to have an understanding of what caused the decline or more importantly how to prevent it happening in the future, it is unsettling.

The majority of crops around the world, an estimated threequarters such as apples to canola, rely on pollination by bees and other insects.

There are concerns the pollinator insect population is being negatively impacted from a wide range of things including land clearing and climate change to the use of pesticides. Severe population declines would cause problems for farmers.

One solution might be to use technology, in this case robotic drones which can pollinate flowers much as bees do.

“Eijiro Miyako at Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, and his colleagues have used the principle of cross-pollination in bees to make a drone that transports pollen between flowers,” according to an article at www.newscientist.com “The manually controlled drone is 4 centimetres wide and weighs 15 grams. The bottom is covered in horsehair coated in a special sticky gel. When the drone flies onto a flower, pollen grains stick lightly to the gel then rub off on the next flower visited.

“In experiments, the drone was able to crosspollinate Japanese lilies (Lilium japonicum).

Moreover, the soft, flexible animal hairs did not damage the stamens or pistils when the drone landed on the flowers.”

It’s certainly intriguing tech, but the science fiction reader in me worries about a world that could become reliant on patented technology to pollinate our food supply. The potential to use the tech for financial gain with the threat to our food production a threat that would not need to be spoken to know exists is a bit too

real.

While one has to marvel at the new tech, one is left hoping as much effort goes into ensuring pollinating insects prosper naturally so that the drones become a fascinating but little used.

Wawota’s Jeff Corkish honoured for 17 years of coaching Submitted Former Hastings MN girls hockey head coach, Jeff Corkish, who coached the team for 17 years and helped build the program into what it is today, was inducted into the Minnesota Girls Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Thursday, February 22nd in a special ceremony held in St. Paul.

Corkish came to Hastings after finishing graduate school in Grand Forks, ND, tak-

ing a teaching position at Hastings high school.

It was not long before he got excited about the possibilities of the Raider girls hockey program. He took over the program for the 19992000 season. Corkish stepped down as head coach after the 2015-16 season in order to watch and help coach his three kids who were all playing hockey in Cottage Grove, MN where he, wife Laura, children Owen, Addison and Mason re-

side. However he still remains heavily involved with youth hockey and developing young players, as well as teaching high school in Hastings, MN. Corkish played hockey in Wawota, then with the Pipestone Valley Jets, later in the SJHL with Melville Millionaires and Lebret Eagles, and with Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. Jeff is the son of Shirley Corkish (Wawota) and the late Clare Corkish.
