GFK’s senior boys capture curling’s top title Lynne Bell

The Senior Boys Curling Team from Carlyle’s Gordon F. Kells High School became Saskatchewan’s provincial curling champions, Saturday, March 11 in Assiniboia. Skip Lane Newell, third Zach Romaniuk, second Ethan Newell, lead Jace Fischer and alternate Brayden Hill- led by coach Brian Romaniuk- captured the Saskatchewan’s top high school curling title in Assiniboia, competing against teams from Regina, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Tisdale, Assiniboia, Carrot River and Spiritwood.

The team from GFK curled three games on Friday, March 10- where they defeated Regina’s Campbell Collegiate 11-7, closely followed by a 6-2 win over Spiritwood. Their last game of the day ended in an 8-4 loss to Tisdale. However, their draw to the button score was the best overall, which gave them the edge and put them in their first pool.

In Saturday’s semi-finals, they defeated Saskatoon’s St. Joseph’s team 6-3, which put them in the gold-medal game against Spiritwood, which they won 9-2, clinching the provincial title.

Their coach, Brian Romaniuk says, “They were excellent. During Districts, Regionals and Provincials, they only lost two games. Every time they started to struggle, they picked themselves up and came back strong. It’s definitely gratifying; the boys made me very proud and their hard work definitely paid off.”

GFK principal Maurice Saltel agrees, adding: This is what makes this such an amazing story: In high achool athletics, there’s only one sport where the size of the school doesn’t matter- and this is it.”

“That’s what makes this such an extraordinary achievement.”

On their return from Assiniboia, the team was treated to an impromptu welcome home as teachers, family members and friends gathered at Carlyle’s curling rink late Saturday night.

“I think that’s when (winning) really hit home for me,” says skip Lane Newell. “Walking into the curling rink and seeing all of those people.”

“I think I speak for everyone when I say it hasn’t sunk in at all yet,” says Brayden Hill, the team’s alternate. “And I wasn’t expecting the welcome we got- none of us were. But once I saw all of those cars at the rink late Saturday night, I realized that something was up.” “(The welcome) was awesome,” adds lead Jace Fischer. “It really hit home then. All of those people- the whole top of the curling rink was full.

Walking into that building, that’s when it really started to hit me.”

“It was our first full year curling together as a team,” says second Ethan Newell. “This year, we practiced lots; we practiced together and our coach helped us out a lot. I thought we had a pretty good chance at Provincials, especially when we won the skills night on Thursday.”

Third Zach Romaniuk agrees. “I still kind of believed we could win, but not at first. What stood out for me was the Thursday night before (Saturday’s)

That really made me think we had a chance.”

“After the first two wins, we really started clicking,” says Lane Newell. “After the third game...We kind of had a bad game against Tisdale, we screwed up and lost.”

“Then the next day we had a team meeting and decided it didn’t look so bad,” added Lane. “We decided that even in our school, we’ve never won a banner for curling. So even if we just take home a silver, we’d still take home a banner for our school.

But it turned out to be better than that.”

Throughout the season, the team of five curlers has come together- and persevered on the path to provincials.

“Brayden (Hill) really stepped up during Regionals, as our alternate,” says Ethan Newell. “I fell on the ice and my knee was in a brace and he really came through for our team.”

“Basically, we’ve known each other and we’re friends in curling and outside curling,” Ethan continues. “Our coach has coached us all the way through. This year, we practiced real good and worked as a team.”

“We’re really good friends and we gell really well together.”

Hill says, “Ethan was injured and I stepped up.

That’s what you do when you’re on a team. Because I’m in Cadets, I can’t practice with them every practice, but we’re still a team.”

“In Saskatoon, we were a very different team,” adds Hill. “We’ve learned a lot this year and (Brian Romaniuk) is an amazing coach. And in recent months, he’s also been coaching the juniors. But after that, he was working with us constantly.”

Skip Lane Newell says of winning a provincial title: “It feels great- unbelievable. We just did what we had to do and what’s really great is that we won against smaller schools with 200 kids or so and schools with 1,600 students.”

Fischer says, “On behalf of all of us, we’d like to thank all of the people who supported us through the season and everyone who came out to the curling rink in Carlyle to welcome us home.”

“We’re a young team,” adds Lane. “Two of us are in grade 11 and three of us are in grade 10. We were the youngest team at Provincials and we’d like to go back next year, too- to win.”

Weekly RCMP report Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle detachment of the RCMP responded to a variety of calls between Friday, March 10, and Thursday, March 16.

Stolen vehicle On Wednesday, March 15, officers were dispatched to a stolen vehicle from Regina being tracked by OnStar in the area. Confirmation it was the right vehicle was received when OnStar turned the

four-way flashers on the vehicle to signal RCMP. RCMP requested the vehicle pull over, but it increased its speeds.

The vehicle was stopped and a high risk take down ensued as RCMP did not know who the occupants of the vehicle were – thus side arms were drawn.

In the vehicle were two young offenders male, a young offender - female, and an adult male. The adult male was charged with failing to comply to release conditions and being in possession of stolen property. The female was charged with possession of stolen property and was later re-

leased. One of the young males was charged with possession of stolen property and failing to comply with their youth release conditions. The other young offender was driving and was charged with dangerous driving of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving of a motor vehicle while being pursued by police, possession of stolen property, and possession of marijuana.

The three males were wanted on warrants and are still in custody. Two of the individuals are facing charges in Regina.

Assault There was an assault in the Redvers, which is now being investigated.

An assault was reported in the Carlyle area. No charges were laid.

One was arrested after an assault was reported in the Carlyle area, but they have since been released.

An RCMP member was assaulted while dealing with someone at the Arcola Health Centre. The individual was also charged with two breaches of probation and two other assaults.

Break and enter There was a break and enter in the Carlyle area, which also involved the theft of a television.

Assistance RCMP assisted with several child welfare cases.

An individual reported they had found damage to their vehicle.

Someone failed to reply with cognizance.

Members are currently conducting an investigation of fraud involving a substantial

amount of money.

RCMP attended to Mental Health Act calls.

Assistance was provided to social services.

Driving infractions There was a complaint of an erratic driver on Hwy 9. RCMP patrolled, but were unable to locate the vehicle.

Seven motor vehicle insurance violations were issued during this time, each for $580.

An individual was fined $230 for not stopping at a stop sign.

Fifteen speeding tickets were issued during this time with the two highest being $185 and $188.

Three seatbelt offences were tickets $175 each.

Two people in separate incidents were found to be operating vehicles without licences. Each were fined $150.

RCMP dealt with an individual who didn’t have their licence plate properly attached.

An individual was fined $115 for tint.

RCMP issued a $280 ticket for someone using their cellphone while driving.

Various other equipment regulation tickets were also issued during this time.

A truck failed to display proper labeling as required by the Dangerous Goods Act and was fined $250.

Mischief People in Redvers were arguing with each other. There have been no charges at this time.

Liquor Act An intoxicated male was arrested in the Carlyle area for public intoxication. He was lodged in cells until sober.

Property damage was reported to have been done by an intoxicated individual in the Carlyle area. RCMP responded and the individual was lodged in cells until sober.

Harassment The RCMP are investigating harassment allegations through text messages.

There were reports of threats uttered in the Manor area, but were determined to be unfounded.

Theft A water truck was stolen from the Kisbey area, but was later returned.

An individual reported the theft of a vehicle, however, it was determined to be unfounded and the vehicle had not been stolen.

Council continues assessment rate discussion Lynne Bell

Property Taxes Council is considering lowering the 2017 mill rate and is discussing other options concerning this year’s

property tax assessment. In addition, they have already decided to eliminate several major expenses from the Town of Carlyle’s 2017 budget in an ongoing effort to reduce the burden on property taxpayers.

Carlyle welcomes new doctor The Town of Carlyle welcomes Dr. Ishpinder Singh Ranu and his family to the community. Dr. Ranu is practicing at Carlyle’s medical clinic.

How Carlyle & District Food Bank helps the hungry Lynne Bell

As the new chairperson of the Carlyle & District Food Bank, Theresa Luedtke is committed to raising awareness of hunger in area communities and seeking out innovative ways to serve people in need of what she calls: “A hand up, not a hand-out.” “ There’s been a food bank in this area since 1989,” says Luedtke. “And we have a great group of volunteers. The ladies have really welcomed me and it’s wonderful working with them.”

“And because they have things so well-organized, we’re looking at adding ways to serve people in our area who may need the food bank as well as working with Food Banks of Saskatchewan to ensure we’re using our resources in the most efficient way, in order to do the best work we can.”

Since January, Luedtke has produced a newsletter for food bank clients and is in the process of setting up a Facebook page, is actively working on volunteer nights where community groups can help pack hampers and is working with area businesses and liasing with area charitable organizations and Food Banks of Saskatchewan.

In January, the Carlyle & District Food Bank distributed 42 hampers to area individuals and families in need. These hampers fed 123 people, 62 adults and 61 children. In February, the food bank supplied persons in need with 52 hampers- 101 adults and 113 children.

“These figures tell the story and I can say that there’s an ongoing need for the food bank in our area,” says Luedtke.

“The food bank will be open in July and August,” she says. “Because even though food drives are popular around Christmastime and Thanksgiving, the need is year-round- and we provide hampers each and every month.”

“We already have donations of fresh produce lined up- and we welcome more. I know with my own garden, there’s a lot more food than our family will ever use, so the food bank is a great place to donate.”

“We are also accepting donations of reusable cloth grocery bags.”

“The committee have also started a pilot project that we’re really excited about,” she adds. “We surveyed our clients- with a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ question asking them whether they’d like to try growing their own produce. So far, we’ve got 12 families lined up with seeds and we’re eventually hoping to have them planting lettuce, onions, cucumbers, corn, potatoes, carrots, peas, tomatoes and more.”

Luedtke says projects like this are also meant to empower clients to maximize the nutritional value of the food they receive in their hampers.

As the new chairperson of the Carlyle & District Food Bank, Theresa Luedtke is committed to raising awareness of hunger in area communities and seeking out innovative ways to serve people in need of what she calls: “A hand up, not a hand-out.” Here, Luedtke is pictured with signs that will appear on the shelves of Carlyle’s Southern Plains Co-op grocery, which will alert shoppers to staples needed by the food bank.

“For example, with chickpeas, we included recipes and instructions on what to do with them in our client newsletter.”

“It’s a simple, useful thing to do, but it also allows me to introduce myself to clients and have a conversation with them.”

Luedtke says raising community awareness about the food bank’s work is always a priority.

“We’ve steamlined our systems around packing hampers, so we’re able to welcome groups to our space (in the Carlyle United Church) to help us pack hampers on Tuesdays. Pick-up day for clients is the third Wednesday of each month and our core group of volunteers will add perishable items then and distribute hampers to clients, but the Tuesday volunteer sessions not only allow groups to help out our volunteers- but they also give visiting groups the opportunity to learn about the food bank and to generally gain awareness about hunger in our area communities.

that we have the chance to inform and educate the next generation,” says Luedtke. “We’re also reaching out to schools and other charitable organizationsboth to ensure that people in need of the food bank are receiving food and to work with other food banks and charities to make sure we’re making the best and most efficient use of our resources.”

“And locally, we’re very grateful to individuals, organizations and businesses for their support of the food bank,” she says. “We couldn’t do what we do wihout their support and I’m excited to work with them on some of the food bank’s new initiatives.”

“One thing we’re working on right now with Southern Plains Co-op in Carlyle is putting signage on the shelves beside items the food bank may be short of for a particular month,” explains Luedtke. “(Manager) Derrick Edwards was right behind this idea and it’s an easy, cost-effective way to remind shoppers of the food bank and its needs.”

“It all helps to get the word out,” she says.

Luedtke draws on her background in communications and public relations in her new volunteer role.

“Before we moved here in 2000, I worked for Imperial Oil in Calgary in various departmentsincluding marketing and PR,” she says. “And as a volunteer, I’ve worked with the United Way, school boards and church committees.”

“When my husband Kelvin and I moved back to the family farm with our daughters (Sarah and Maria), it was a deliberate decision and it had a lot to do with the lifestyle and values we wanted our daughters to grow up with.”

“Now the girls are off to university and I’m ready for a new challenge,” says Luedtke. “We’ve been so blessed in our home life and living here that I wanted to give back. I think that’s so importantwhether it’s joining a service organization, doing something in your church, whatever...”

“One of the things I’ve already seen while working in the food bank is people who pick up their hamper and say something like: ‘I’m hoping this is my last hamper. I’ve got a job and as soon as I’m on my feet, I’ll be back to help like I was helped,’” she says.

“As a food bank, we’re trying to do more than hampers every month, because we can. If we can help people help themselves, then that’s what we want to do.”

Annual Redvers Music Festival fast approaching The Redvers and District Music Festival is fast approaching! Many talented young musicians from the area (Redvers, Carlyle, Stoughton, Arcola…) will be performing on March 27, 28, 29, April 3 and 4 at Knox United Church in Redvers. This year’s festival has competitors in band, piano, voice, choral speech and solo speech.

-Programs can be purchased at Today’s Enterprises, Redvers Pharmasave, Kings in Carlyle, and Carlyle Pharmasave.

Toronto Children’s Chorus, the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus, VOCA Chorus, the Toronto Classical Singers, and the Second City. She recently taught a public masterclass to Bachelors and Masters level students for the music department at the University of Mississippi, and recently joined the roster of teachers at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church’s Choir School.

Active as a performer, she has been engaged by Tapestry New Opera, Soundstreams, the Aldeburgh Connection, Toronto Summer Music, Winnipeg’s Women’s Musical Club, Saskatoon Opera, the Arts and Letters Club, Chorus Niagara, Pax Christi Chorale, Toronto Concert Orchestra, Toronto Philharmonia, Toronto Classical Singers, Calgary Civic Symphony, Regina Symphony Orchestra, Tallis Choir, and Regina Philharmonic Chorus, among others, for solo opera and concert appearances. Internationally, Allison has sung with the Bachakademie (Germany), the Aldeburgh Festival (England), the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy, the International Vocal Arts Institute (Israel), and the Franz Schubert Institut (Austria).

Mrs. Epp and her husband moved to an acreage near Brandon/Minnedosa, Manitoba four years ago. She teaches all levels of piano and theory, currently teaching at the E-Gré Conservatory of Brandon University as well as maintaining a studio from her home and in the Minnedosa area. She serves as pianist in her church, accompanies local choirs, instrumentalists and vocalists, and cheers for the Saskatchewan Rough Riders.

Victoria Sparks Allison Arends Bio: Soprano Allison Cecilia Arends is a graduate of Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artist Program, and received her Masters of Music at the University of Toronto Opera School and her Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance at the University of Victoria.

Her various teachers and mentors have included W. Stephen Smith, Mary Morrison, Timothy Noble, Wendy Nielsen, Selena James, Alexandra Browning, Diana Woolrich, and Norma Bertsch.

Bio: Victoria Sparks holds a bachelor of Music and Education from the U of M, where her teachers included Jauvon Gilliam and Rob Gardner. She graduated from Butler University completing a Masters in Percussion Performance.

Sparks currently teaches percussion techniques, directs the percussion ensemble, and runs a private studio at Brandon University. She also runs the percussion studio at the U of M and directs their percussion ensemble, as well as teaching at the Canadian Mennonite University. Wrestling Banners Congratulations to the GFK students who wrestled at Provincials in Warman on the weekend. Nathen Schmidt won his second Provincial Gold Medal, Dennis Bridge won a Silver Medal, and Jordan Patriquin won a Bronze Medal. It was an amazing weekend for coach Monte McNaughton and his team. Congratulations!

At the Sr. Boys’ Regional Basketball Playoff in Saskatoon, the GFK Basketball Team had an impressive showing against last year’s Provincial Champs, but came up short. Still, Mr. Brocollo and the GFK team should be proud of a terrific basketball season!

GFK badminton has started.

Both junior and senior teams will be practicing twice a week and taking part in tournaments and exhibition games throughout the season.

I always try to choose my topic mid-week, thus allowing plenty of time to mull it over and mentally outline my article. By the time we left for church this morning, however, I still had nothing in mind and I was getting desperate. “Talk to me please, Lord,” I prayed, “I want to say something of value”. He answered, but not in the way I’d have chosen.

Simply put, I flubbed up while playing the piano for the service. First of all I returned to my seat instead of waiting for the next hymn, a mistake brought about by intense nervousness but one which our pastor graciously overlooked. He simply moved on to the sermon. Following an excellent message I opened the hymnal and played the introduction to the wrong song and, of course, in the wrong key for the right song. to my God-given ability to transpose and play by ear and the overwhelming graciousness of pastor and congregation, we sang it but I was mortified. A warm hug from several folks following the last amen helped alleviate my pain, though not entirely.

I arrived home, opened my email and hoped against hope there would be something to ease my self-disgust.

Thank God, there were two messages. The first, a beautiful note from above named pastor assuring me of my worth and value and then, from a friend who often sends what I call pre-packaged messages. I confess that I often just skim through them before deleting them but today the words hit home: live simply; love generously; care deeply and speak kindly “…have compassion…be tender hearted, be humble” (1 Peter 3:8) Thank you Pastor Dave, thank you Irene, you were all those things and I feel renewed.

Men fined $3,000 for illegal hunting activity Two Kamsack-area men were fined $3,000 in provincial court after pleading guilty to poaching and night hunting offences.

On October 18, 2015, Ministry of Environment conservation officers received a call to the Turn In Poachers line about hunters using spotlights to hunt at night in an area northwest of Kamsack. A few days later, the officers were on a night patrol in the same area and observed the occupants of a vehicle shining a spotlight in a field.

The officers stopped the vehicle where the two individuals claimed they were exercising their Treaty right to hunt for food. Through the investigation, it was also determined they were hunting on private land without permission from the landowner.

Anyone exercising Treaty hunting rights must obtain landowner permission to hunt on private land or occupied Crown land. The use of a spotlight is prohibited in Saskatchewan, except on First Nation Reserves.

A controversial topic

I’ve tried thinking of ways to address this topic before, but I found that there weren’t really words to put together that would make sense in regards to the prochoice versus pro-life debate.

That was until I heard someone say they were pro-choice, but not pro-abortion.

This resonated with me. I think Kelly Running women should have the right to Observer Staff choose. Who are we to say that they absolutely have to have a baby. What if they can’t take care of the child? So, they give it up for adoption, which just means more children in need of homes, growing up in tough times. What kind of a life are they going to be given?

I know we’re looking at the “what if’s” of the future; but, is it merciful to choose not to have a child if their future is uncertain?

Personally, however, if I were ever in that position, I don’t think I would be able to choose to have an abortion. However, you never know what you would do until you’ve been put into that position.

Currently I feel as though I have the means to take care of a child and the support system behind me that I could. Not everyone has those two big factors in their life and one person’s situation is not the same as another’s.

So, I’m pro-choice because I feel as though for some women, they need to be allowed to have a choice and for it to be a safe option. I can’t tell anyone what decision they should make because I’m not them. If raped, would that individual want to keep the baby? Perhaps some could, but that child would be a constant reminder of that trauma. Are we really expecting a woman who was violated to bring a child into the world like that?

What if they took all of the precautions and they didn’t work, but they’re not in a position to raise a child? We expect them to go through the nine months of carrying the child and give the child up for adoption? I feel like that would be extremely difficult to do and as previously stated, you don’t know what that child’s life will be. You would have to hope for the best, but you would always wonder if you did the right thing.

Just as I’m sure you’d always wonder if you did the right thing after an abortion. Or even if you kept the child, would you always wonder what life would have looked like and potentially resent the child?

Before abortion became legal, women found ways to not have a child and they were risky. The techniques used would abort the pregnancy, but it could also put the woman’s life in jeopardy; potentially losing two lives.

Now in the United States, funding has been pulled from places such as Planned Parenthood because they offer the option of abortion. President Donald Trump wants organizations such as Planned Parenthood to continue offering women’s services, but not provide abortion services. Thus, nearly $400 million in Medicaid which goes to the group may be pulled back which would result in approximately 400,000 women losing access to healthcare.

What are they really doing there? Providing services to prevent (not abort) unintended pregnancies, provide pap tests and breast exams, test and treat for sexually transmitted infections, educational programs, outreach programs, and abortions.

However, through statistics reported it seems as though they are attempting to do everything in their power to avoid that option as only three percent of all Planned Parenthood services are abortion services.

So, I am pro-choice because I don’t think anyone can tell another person what’s going to be the best thing for them. Only they know what they will be able to live with and what they wouldn’t be able to.

Where have all the trees gone?

I had the opportunity to walk around my alma mater recently.

Well, more to the point I took the opportunity to drag my family around my former college campus. I’ve been back to that city a few times but never took the time to stop and tour the place as it looks today. Regular updates and fundraising appeals attempt to keep alumni in the know, but since we had time this Shelley Luedtke trip I wanted to check it out in person.

So on a bitterly cold Saturday morning we trudged across the campus and through the buildings as I pointed out what was new and what was familiar. But I had another purpose for the visit.

The day of my convocation the university started a tradition of having the graduating class plant a tree. We don’t know the process that led to our selection but a friend and I found ourselves brandishing shovels and planting the tree on behalf of our class. The practice continued in subsequent years creating a line of flourishing vegetation. This was the other reason for my campus visit. I wanted to take a picture in front of that tree as it stands today.

Except it doesn’t. It isn’t there. My tree is gone-or at least moved. New facilities and walkways have taken the space where the trees used to stand.

They were likely relocated but given the dropping temperatures of the day and the fact that it was a Saturday there was little incentive to try and locate someone who might know.

It’s an interesting feeling visiting a property where you once lived. If many years have passed there might be some adjustment to perception, particularly if you last saw it through the eyes of a child. I remember the startling feeling of visiting the “forest” where my friends and I used to play as children. It was located in our large, unfenced

backyard, bordering our neighbour’s driveway.

It could be a pirate ship one day, a jungle, or a hide-out from the bad guys the next as we climbed from branch to branch or leaped from limb to limb. Returning as an adult meant seeing the forest through more realistic eyes. That dense, immense, adventured-filled forest was… a few scraggly trees-covering a few square feet of otherwise barren land.

Things that once seemed so big can turn out to be far different than what our memories were holding on to. Although it may be jarring to see how much different it looks, there may be something helpful about it as well. A look back can be filled solely with sweet remembrances and comforting nostalgia, leading us to believe that life was so much better in another time or for another generation. Or it could be more painful and result in focusing on nothing but hurtful situations. It can cause one to get stuck because in either case the years of thinking back or reliving it may cause those remembrances to become bigger than they really were or at least bigger than they needed to be.

That’s when we need to become gardeners and refine the landscape a bit. We need to prune back those things we are holding on to so they won’t become overgrown and take away from what we are meant to experience. Perhaps we need to fully uproot things from the past that have ensnared us so that we can relocate to where there is better light and life.

Looking back is natural and important but we shouldn’t let the past take up too much space. Just like the hills we climbed and the forests we played in, it is vital to bring a renewed perspective and not allow things to extend too far and too long into our todays. A walk along memory lane to see where we once were can be an interesting endeavour, but hopefully we will discover that the places we visit have changed as much as we have.

That’s my outlook.

Welcome to Spring! As I write this, Monday morning, today officially kicks off Spring 2017! The temperatures have been creeping above zero most days, but that just means there is a LOT of water lying around.

This particular time of year drives me crazy, it doesn’t seem to matter where I drive or where Krystyn Gillies I park, I always leave huge ruts and run out of momentum at the top of the driveway and make a bigger mess. The amount of snow we received has made the melt forecast very deceiving. It looks like it is melting quickly, but I am sure we will have some of these drifts well into the end of May. I am glad to see the sun this morning and I hope its heat and the little bit of wind will help dry things up because with the season change comes the end of renovations for the season. We have been working our tails off this winter, trying to finish our seemingly never ending second level remodel. I am happy to announce though, that we finished laying the floor this past weekend and are working on trim work.

That means there is an end in sight! The transformation is mind boggling! The rooms were functional when we moved the house, but needed the electri-

cal upgraded, which meant running all new wires.

When we started, we hummed and hawed about what the best course of action would be. Gutting the entire level was about the best bet because we had very little knowledge about what was under the walls.

When we started, we took load after load of debris out, drywall, insulation, scrap lumber, carpets, you name it. As well, we needed to rethink the footprint of the room as well. Originally, the rooms only used a small portion of the space available, which made sense, but we wanted to utilize any square foot we could.

After restructuring the peaked ceilings, we reinsulated and installed all new drywall throughout. After that, we realized that the attic space in the kitchen shared floor joists with the rooms up there with no blockage between the spaces. This meant that all the cold air in the attic was flowing right into the upstairs room, making it very cold in the winter. We decided to insulate the floors as well, to make sure the rooms could be as warm as possible.

After that, we laid all new subfloor and began the ridiculously tedious task of mudding and taping.

Mind you, the timing between drywalling and mudding and taping spanned from late 2015 to 2017, because we don’t renovate in the warmer months, (because who has the time). When it cooled off last

fall, we really put the pedal to the metal because we knew it needed to be finished.

I suppose another factor of why it took so long, was that we did everything ourselves as we could afford it.

Meaning evenings and weekends had to be split between remodeling and retrieving the supplies needed.

Thankfully, we were able to procure the last of the goodies needed a few weeks ago, so we have been pushing really hard to finish.

Last weekend, we finally could finish laying the floor. What a difference that made! I couldn’t believe how a few packages of flooring could make the rooms look so finished. We still have a few things to do, some trim work in the south room, more trim work in the hallway and to paint the stairs and doors. I am hoping we get it all done before the snow is fully gone, but time will only tell!

I cannot wait to look back and remember all the work that went into that level of the house and know that it is all done. When I think back to when we gutted and redid the main floor, the sheer amount of work we did astounds me. It made the rooms upstairs look “easy”, until you actually got going of course.

It will be so nice to go from a one bedroom house to a three-bedroom house very soon. I suppose it will be a few more square feet to clean, but it will be amazing to not have a makeshift bedroom in the dining room.

Off the wagon Even the strongest among us fail. Being able to recognize a weakness gives one very little power to overcome it. Even those who have walked this path before can succumb to sweet temptation over and over again.

All those promises I’ve made to myself to bolster self control, all those private pep talks to curb an Jocelyn Hainsworth unhealthy, unreasonable fixation, all those post-frenzy moments of clarity when it becomes crystal clear what I have done – yet again. All undone (as usual) when I was at my most vulnerable; snow still piled high on my gardens, spring fever raging in my blood.

Hello. My name is Jocelyn, and I am a gardenaholic.

This weakness - this tendency of mine - is hereditary. It affects all the females in my family to some degree. And, because we women tend to spend a lot of time in each others’ company, not only does the actual genetic weakness exert its influence on us, but hanging out with other addicts is a bad thing. They warn you about that sort of thing. It’s what you call a double whammy.

To make matters worse we have all managed to marry enablers - guys who are easily talked into cultivating another stretch of ground for a perennial bed here and a strawberry patch there, here some asparagus, there some raspberries, here a bush, there an apple tree ... e-i-e-i-o. They can even be sold on the idea of hauling massive rocks into the front yard and inserting them into a hillside for esthetic appeal.

Trust me, I know.

On the surface there doesn’t seem to be a big problem. I mean, what’s another flower bed? It can easily be rationalized as ‘curb appeal’ or ‘doing our bit for the bees’. An addiction dressed in environmentally friendly clothing can fool a lot of people, but while these things don’t seem bad to the casual outside observer, living on the inside with the day-to-day consequences of weeding and watering every waking moment is another story.

It can tear families apart ... or indoctrinate the next generation into the family failing; it can go either way.

Just ask my own children about their childhoods of conscripted slave labour spent out in the potato patch.

I confess all this to show you how my life has been a rocky path of self-inflicted gardens. But I also want you to understand that I have gained at least a small modicum of insight into my struggle. I do comprehend the magnitude of my weakness, and I know I am helpless to battle it alone. There are twelve step recovery programs out there for everything and if I ever find one for gardening I hope I have the strength

of character to join. Until then I’m on my own.

Over the years I’ve had my ups and downs. Sometimes I’ve been able to hold the line on reasonable expectations – you know, making sure the tilled square footage/available manpower ratio is in balance. And other times a friend will be giving away loads of perennials and I say ‘yes’ to everything, only to come to my senses when I get back home and remember that every square inch of my flower beds are already full.

My willpower ebbs and flows on me: I’m never stronger than at the end of a hot summer day, having weeded all morning, picked beans all afternoon, and made pickles after supper. And I’m at my weakest in front of a gardening bulb and seed display in early March ... as the VISA bill will attest to when it comes next month.

It was the old case of one plant is one too many, one thousand is not enough. If I could have just walked on by I might have been okay, but I had already made a premeditated decision to buy begonias ... which

derailed my self control and led into a question of ‘which ones?’ which grew to ‘how many?’ which in turn spiraled downward to ‘how many of each?’ In no time at all, with ringing in my ears, my eyes glazed over, and my pulse elevated and erratic I piled a large bag of gladioli into the cart to keep the twenty begonia company and topped them all off with seed packets of sunflowers, cosmos, marigolds, and zinnias. As I furtively stowed this contraband in my car for the trip home I knew I had fallen off the wagon yet again.

I’ve got them hidden in the basement at the moment while I try to figure out where on earth I’m going to put them I know this is just me rationalizing my failings here, but it could be worse, right? But I am helping out the bees. And it does make the yard look pretty. And, now that the kids are gone, I’m only harming myself.

I’ll move on to promising myself it will never happen again the day I plant 45 gladioli in my brand new flower bed.

Wawota sweeps series for Big Six title Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Wawota Flyers had returned to the Big Six championship in hopes of earning another title after getting past Redvers in the semis. The Wheat Kings came in as a new team this season in the Big Six and in an unexpected turn of events during the semi-finals took out Bienfait – who were sitting first after the regular season.

The first match-up came on Saturday, March 11, where Wawota won 5-4 over Yellow Grass. On Monday, March 13, Wawota earned a 6-5 win over Yellow Grass. Back on home ice Wawota dominated the Friday, March 17, game as they pulled away with a 7-2. The fourth game of the series was do or die for Yellow Grass who played hard, but were unable to capitalize on their efforts. In the end Wawota earned a 4-1 win to end the series and earn the champion title for the second year in a row.

The game was exciting for fans, the approximately 980 people through the doors in Weyburn were watched as the teams battled.

The Flyers took to an early lead scoring a goal in the first period with Riley Riddell capitalizing on a two on one opportunity after being set up by Devin Stewart.

In the second period the teams battled and Kevin Lincoln found the back of the net off of an assist from Riley Riddell and Brent Struble. Yellow Grass answered back with 29 seconds left on the

The Carlyle Atom Cougars had a successful run this season in the Moose Mountain Minor Hockey League coming out on top over Redvers in the final.

During the regular season Redvers Rockets 1, topped the league with 18 wins for a total of 37 points, while the Carlyle Cougars trailed with 17 wins and 34 points for the season.

The Cougars took on the Carnduff Devils in the semifinal, before coming up against the Redvers Rockets who defeated Oxbow to move onto the final.

Throughout the season the Cougars were unable to beat the Rockets. Entering the final, the young Cougars were determined and ended the first game on March

10 with a win of 8-7 in a high scoring battle in Redvers.

The next day the teams faced off against each other again. This time with a lower score, but the same result. The

Carlyle Cougars won the league with a 3-2 win on home ice.

“They played their hearts out and deserved it,” Coach Kirk Himmelspach said of the team.

“I’m really proud of the kids, they worked hard.”

GFK Senior Boys Now Curling’s

Provincial Champs

Carlyle’s Gordon F. Kells Senior Boys High School Curling Team captured the provincial title, Saturday, March 11 in Assiniboia. Coached by Brian Romaniuk, skip Lane Newell, third Zach Romaniuk, second Ethan Newell, lead Jace Fischer and alternate Brayden Hill were greeted by wellwishers at a surprise welcome home reception, late Saturday night at Carlyle’s curling rink. “That’s when (winning) really hit home for me,” said skip Lane Newell. “Walking into the curling rink and seeing all of those people.” Here, in front of another large crowd-this time in Assiniboia- Team GFK joins competitors from throughout Saskatchewan at the Provincial Championship opening ceremony.

Gordon F. Kells High School Principal Maurice Saltel says of his school’s championship team: “This is what makes this such an amazing story: In high school athletics, there’s only one sport where the size of the school doesn’t matter- and this is it. That’s what makes this an extraordinary achievement.”

The GFK Senior Boys Curling Team not only made provincial history when they captured curling’s top spot in Saskatchewan this year; they also made their mark at their school, too. “We’ve never had a curling banner at our school,” says skip Lane Newell. “And now we do.”

Team alternate Brayden Hill says that a big part of the team’s success is due to their coach, Brian Romaniuk. “He’s an amazing coach. And in recent months, he’s also been coaching the juniors. But after that, he was working with us constantly.”

Coach Brian Romaniuk says of his provincial championship-winning team: “They were excellent. During Districts, Regionals and Provincials, they only lost two games. Everytime they started to struggle, they picked themselves up and came back strong. It’s definitely gratifying; the boys made me very proud and their hard work definitely paid off.”

As lead Jace Fischer makes a shot, third Zach Romaniuk and second Ethan Newell sweep- as the GFK Senior Boys curling team make their way towards the province’s top title in Assiniboia, Saturday, March 11.

Take action now to prevent water damage to your home Above normal spring runoff may cause property damage in some parts of Saskatchewan The spring melt is about to begin and some areas of the province are likely to experience above-normal levels of spring runoff in the coming days and weeks.

SGI CANADA encourages homeowners provincewide to take immediate steps to prevent unnecessary water damage to their homes. Last year, about 60 per cent of all SGI CANADA claims were related to water damage.

“Predictions are that the southeast corner of the province and the Hudson Bay area may see the biggest impacts. Homeowners may experience water damage, which can be expensive and frustrating,” said SGI CANADA Chief Operating Officer Don Thompson. “But, there are things you can and should do right now to prevent damage to your home.”

SGI CANADA recommends all homeowners, especially those in areas where flooding is more likely, do the following: • Make sure your sump pump is working properly.

A malfunctioning sump pump can result in massive water damage.

• Direct downspouts away from the foundation and make sure gutters are free of debris, snow and ice.

• Shovel snow away from your foundation. Ensure your yard is properly graded so surface water flows away from the foundation of your home.

• Check that storm sewer grates in your neighbourhood are clear of debris.

The face of Lent and being a good root Pause for Reflection

Minnie Pearl’s husband supposedly said she looked like a breath of spring. Minnie replied, “He probably meant I look like the end of a long, cold winter.”

Lent is a time for a refreshing look at our lives.

How we look at the end of this Lent is probably an indication of where we are going in life’s journey.

There is so much Good News all about us, even in the March cold and the dreary work-a-day world that saps our energy and time. But God works outside of time.

After Christ’s death on Good Friday he descended into hell to bring the good news of salvation to all who had waited for centuries for the salvation promised by the prophets. The gates of heaven were opened, and indeed, souls like the good thief on the cross could join Jesus “this very day”.

God’s infinite love is our hope. Just as Jesus forgave sinners and rescued them from the absence of heaven, so we also have faith that God works

even outside of the constraints of time.

It just struck me recently that you can pray for someone even after an event in time. Someone you love is dying and you pray for them Then you find out God had already called them home. That prayer loses nothing in its effectiveness.

We are sinners still locked in time, but we are surrounded by hope and joy. My granddaughter was singing Hark the Harold Angels Sing this Lent.

Thoughts of the “new born King” are appropriate year round.Too easily we forget how approachable is Our Lord and Saviour. Children don’t have that problem.

Recently I observed a flower blossom in dirt and grime. How can such a creative wonder come from dirt and grime. Then I though how we can, with God’s help, take nutrients from the dirt of our lives and produce flowers and fruit.

Father Brendan McGuire shares a Lenten reflection on Christ’s temptation. The Spirit was with Jesus as he went into the wilderness and struggled with the devil. The Spirit stays with us as we fight temptation, and that should give us hope.

Pope Francis was once asked who he is; «I am a sinner,” he replied. You and I can say, “I am a sinner, Lord. Take me back to you. Help me to continue my return this Lent.”

Another way of improving on the fruits of Lent is to follow the prescripts the church gives us. Fasting, prayer and almsgiving are proven tools to help us turn from sins and be faithful to the gospel.

Ash Wednesday’s sign served to humble us and tell us that we are sinners in need of repentance and grace. Fasting helps clear our minds from distractions and focus on prayerful thoughts.

McGuire adds these helpful suggestions this Lent: Give up something that is really going to hurt.

Give up having the last word.

Give up having to say something or always saying something negative.

Choose to change, and in that discomfort of wanting to say something, say no [to yourself]. And turn toward others.

Whatever swamp or quagmire we find ourselves in this Lent, with the Holy Spirit in us we can be a solid root and push upwards to produce a flower and fruit pleasing to God.

What affects farmland values?

Regional Farm Business Management Specialist Many farmers and ranchers are interested in changes in farmland values as they make purchase and/or sale decisions in order to strategically plan for the future. Many agribusinesses understand how fluctuations in values can affect farmer’s decisions regarding capital purchases. Even the financial institutions are interested in the future movement of land values because they understand how these values affect the customer’s balance sheet and ultimately their collateral position. Since farmland values are the largest driver in both farm assets and farm debt it is important to monitor how these values change and understand what affects them.

According to Farm Credit Canada’s Farmland Value Trends information, Saskatchewan farmland values have been trending upward since 2006.

Whether these values will stay the same, drop or

increase will depend on a number of factors. Some of these factors include the current commodity prices, average net farm income, land rental rates, technology and production, availability of land, regulations/laws, individual’s available credit, interest rates, currency and even urban sprawl.

One of the ways land is valued is by multiplying the assessment of land by a certain multiple to arrive at a fair market value. Before doing this, it is important to note that SAMA conducts revaluations based on a four year cycle. 2013 was the year the last revaluation was done, and the 2017 revaluation will see assessed values updated to reflect a new base date as of January 1, 2015. The legislated base date means that 2017 values reflect a property’s value as of January 1, 2015. The reason values may change every four years may be due to one of two things occurring: • The real estate market may have changed.

Market forces are the usual cause of a change in assessments, or • A property may also have been changed. For example, the buildings may have been upgraded and this change in physical properties can happen at any time.

SAMA has just completed the revaluation for 2017 and have forwarded the new assessments to each of the Rural Municipalities, who will in turn be make rate payers aware of these values when sending out their tax notices. Optimist Club of Arcola supports community Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Optimist Club of Arcola, a “friend of youth,” has been active in the area for 24 years. They have contributed to a lot of service groups and youth involved activities during this time with their main fundraiser being their annual Snowmobile Rally.

“Having so many service clubs involved makes our job easier and we appreciate all of the help,” Brownridge said of the Rally.

This year the rally was hosted on Jan. 28, where it attracted 522 riders and sponsorship from 92 cash sponsors and six merchandise sponsors.

“We appreciate the support of our sponsors and are thankful for their continued support each year,” Brownridge added.

Each year the Optimists also host a lottery, with ticket sales going towards different clubs directed at providing youth with opportunities. These various clubs sell the lottery tickets and in turn earn their sales from the Optimists.

On March 15, the Optimists came together with everyone who sold tickets for their annual rally banquet where the donations are made.

The lottery was sold out, with 2,500 tickets sold. Of that 1,053 tickets were sold by Optimist

members, while the Arcola Curling Club sold 177 ($3,540), the Arcola Daycare sold 286 tickets ($5,720), the Arcola Figure Skating Club sold 120 ($2,400), the Arcola Rodeo Committee sold 95 ($1,900), the Moose Mountain Wado Kai Karate Club sold 189 ($3,780), Moose Mountain Wildlife sold 86 tickets ($1,720), Prairie Place Complex sold 97 tickets ($1,940), and the Southeast Vipers Volleyball Club sold 397 tickets ($7,940). Ticket sale donations thus reached a total of $28,940.

“Thank you to all of the service clubs who helped us sell tickets this year,” Brownridge stated.

In addition to ticket sales donated, the Optimists gave $3,000 to the Moose Mountain Snowmobile Club: “We enjoy working with the Moose Mountain Snowmobile Club,” Brownridge explained. “We’ve never had to worry about the trails and they are always top notch to work with.”

Finally, the Optimists donated the 50/50 earnings from the rally day to the Carlyle and District Food Bank, which totaled $1,000.

In total they donated $32,940 during the rally banquet held in Arcola.

With additional funds raised the Optimists will continue upkeep to The MacMurray Theatre, which is in need of siding. They recently installed air conditioning in the Legion Hall. While they will also be finishing off work at the play park in Arcola and are going to be assisting the Crescent Point Leisure Complex – the Carlyle swimming pool – in their upgrades.

The evening also saw those in attendance recognize efforts of Jason and Karen Dukart in the community.

When anything is needed, Brownridge stated the Dukarts would be there to help in anyway possible.

“They do a remarkable amount of volunteer work in the community,” Brownridge said. “And they’re never given enough thanks for all that they do.”

In response the room got to their feet for a standing ovation to join in thanking the Dukarts.

It was a big night at the annual banquet as a Life Membership award was also awarded. Doug Brownridge, a charter member of the Optimist Club of Arcola, was awarded the honour.

“He was a charter member and believed strongly in what the Optimists do, he saw the potential in the theatre and in several other things around town,” Blake said as he called Doug up to accept to he honour.

A man of few words, Doug simply said, “Thank you very much.” Then laughing added, “If you live long enough.”

Thanks that evening were also given to Linda Chapman and Eileen Corrigan who catered the event with their team: “They always provide an excellent meal and have been very good to us over the years,” Blake stated.

Focus was turned to the future as next year’s Optimist Snowmobile Rally will be its 25th anniversary, which is quite a milestone. Additionally, the Optimists feel that with good sponsorship and great effort from the community, the potential to reach $1 million donated since their inception is within reach, which would be another exciting milestone to celebrate in its 25th year.

“It’s not just this community or this club that comes out for the day, there’s people from across southeast Saskatchewan,” Blake said. “I’ve been involved for the past seven years and I know that anyone from southeast Saskatchewan knows about the rally. Patients will receive state-of-the-art radiation therapy in Regina and Saskatoon Patients receiving radiation therapy at the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency’s Allan Blair Cancer Centre in Regina now have access to the most advanced equipment available, with the $5.08 million installation of a TrueBeam linear accelerator (linac) and completion of the associated renovations.

The provincial government has also approved $3.8 million for a similar replacement linac in Saskatoon.

“Cancer has impacted the lives of many people in Saskatchewan, my family and myself included,” Rural and Remote Health Minister Greg Ottenbreit said. “This investment will provide patients with more advanced and accurate radiation therapy, and reflects our government’s commitment to accessible treatment.”

The TrueBeam can deliver higher doses of radiation more quickly and with greater precision. It also provides better integration with imaging systems than any current or previous machines used. The customizable system will allow the Cancer Agency to provide cancer patients with leading edge treatment techniques.

Tracy Peterson was home visiting his parents Ben and Marcelle Peterson from March 9 to 14 before returning to Calgary. Guests over the weekend to visit with Ben, Marcelle and Tracy were Michelle, Reg and Scott Needham (Oxbow), Joanne, Brad Longphee and family, Carson, Paige and Nicole and her friend Mitchell (Redvers). Also visiting and having supper with everyone on Sunday evening were Glennis Peterson, Lyle and Donna McDonald (Lang, SK).

Sincere sympathy is extended to Don and Linda Akins on the death of his brother Robert Akins of Manor on Mar. 12 in Arcola. His funeral was held March 17 in Carlyle. Condolences are also extended to all other family members.

Dale and Holly Anthony attended the funeral of Bernard (Bert) Neumeiur on Mar. 17 in Estevan. Bert passed away at the age of 82 years on Mar. 11 at Estevan Hospital.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan spent Mar. 17 night in Weyburn. They attended the dance competition early Saturday morning and later in the evening when Ainsley and friends competed. During the afternoon they travelled to Regina did some shopping and visited with Jeff Cowan before returning to Weyburn for the final competition then returned home to Alida.

On Mar. 18 we (Gray and I) received word that our son, Murray Cowan had been promoted to Deputy Chief by the Estevan Police Service and the Estevan Board of Police Commissioners. An official promotional ceremony will be held on Mar. 27 at City Hall.

Shelly Cowan travelled to Bismarck, ND on Mar. 19 where she visited with her mother Orlys Nilsen who is a patient in hospital recovering from an operation. Shelly also visited with other family members who were there. Get well wishes for a speedy recovery Orlys, hope to see you around and about soon.

Gray and Edel Cowan spent a few hours in Regina on Mar. 20 where Gray had a medical appointment and they also spent time visiting with their son Jeff Cowan.

The Alida Recreation Board wishes to advise you that this is your last

The deadline is Mar. 31 to make a tax deductible cash donation to the Village of Alida towards the rink project. All donations will be put towards the rink mortgage. They have currently raised 70% ($486,500) of their goal ($695,000) – ALMOST THERE! They greatly appreciate all of the contributions made and the continued support of their fundraisers.

We are almost at the end of Sunday Breakfasts at the Hall for another season. On Mar. 19 had Kitchen Group #1 at the helm and they served up a total of 48 breakfasts – Way to go Guys and Gals.

During the week of March 8 to 12 was the week for the Men’s Brier Curling as well as our local drama week, so needless to say I didn’t get the chance to watch as much of the Brier as I would have liked to, but that’s the way things turn out sometimes. However the final result was to my liking – Team Gushue (NFL) was the lucky winners and will be representing Canada at the Men’s Worlds which will be held in Edmonton (beginning of April). The Women’s Worlds Curling is now on and I’m enjoying being able to watch as many as the games as possible.

These games are being held in Beijing, China and the time schedule is a bummer, however with replays one can enjoy watching the good curling. So far Canada’s Team Homan is doing good, having no losses yet (4-0) – Go Canada Go. One could also watch more curling this weekend – the Pinty Elite Curling was also televised – resulting in Team Morris (BC) winning the event.

Finally I do hope and believe the winter weather is behind us and we can hopefully say that March is going to go out like a lamb – please – please, I’m tired of winter.

A birthday celebration was held at Hilltop Manor in Weyburn on Mar. 4. It was to honour Bud Pleckham on his 92nd birthday and Mary on her 86th birthday. Mary’s daughter Darlene and Wayne Coderre and Corey of Stoughton, Dennis and Joan Fisk and their son, Jeff and Candice Fisk and their family Brittany and Brayden and Colt, Mackenzey and Wyatt. Kay Steele from Lethbridge was also in attendance.

Pictures of the five generations were taken at this time.

Doug and Sherry Wight have returned after spending several days holidaying in Cuba.

Terry and Gwen Curzon have returned home after spending the winter in Mesa, Arizona.

Visiting with her mother, Liz Luscombe for a few days last week was Myrna Quigley of Souris, MB. Tom and Cheryl Weatherald motored to Regina last week. Tom

attended some hockey games while Cheryl, Sandra Weatherald, Darcy Weatherald and McKenna enjoyed the Swan Lake Ballet.

Tim and Brenda Hamilton, Jay and Carmen, and Deb and Glen Sorenson along with 8 others enjoyed a seven-day cruise in the Caribbean, the Dominican, US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Grand Turks. They spent three days in Florida where they went to Disney World.

Eileen Shatford enjoyed a trip to the West coast where she visited with her brother Bud, and nieces and nephews. She also visited with daughter Jill at Sechelt and son Jeff in Victoria. Eileen reported that their spring is late this year so the few blossoms that did appear were a welcome sight.

Congratulations to the Wawota Flyers who won the big 6 League in four straight games against Yellow Grass.

Connecting Canadians from coast to coast THE TRANS-CANADA HIGHWAY

================================================= On September 3, 1962, Prime Minister John Diefenbaker officially opened the Trans-Canada Highway at a ceremony in Rogers Pass, British Columbia. However, the highway, which stretches 7,821 kilometres between St. John’s, Newfoundland, and Victoria, British Columbia, was in fact only completed to determined specifications in 1971.

Formal construction began in 1950 under the Trans-Canada Highway Act, which set up parameters for cost sharing between the federal and provincial governments to build the roadways. Some sections had already been constructed, such as Highway 17 in Ontario, while others were yet to be formed at all. The project was scheduled for completion sometime in 1956, but certain stretches proved more difficult to construct than anticipated. The two most challenging sections were the passage alongside Lake Superior between Sault Ste. The task was at last completed in September of 1960. In British Columbia, work was delayed and plans were revised due to the site being under constant threat of an avalanche. Snow sheds and earth dams were constructed to ensure the safety of workers, and the Department of National Defence was enlisted to help guard future motorists against potential calamities—a job it still performs to this day.

The stretch was opened to the public on June 30, 1962.

As all roadways do, the Trans-Canada Highway continues to evolve, with many provinces electing to add new stretches to the already established route. In many locations, twinning—the process of broadening the highway to add two full lanes on either side of a median—is also underway (or already compete in the case of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba).

In addition to the 7,821-kilometre main stretch, several alternative routes are considered official segments of the Trans-Canada Highway, bringing its total length to 12,800 kilometres of pavement. For example, in the Maritimes, one passage crosses Prince Edward Island while another avoids it, venturing exclusively through Nova Scotia. In Ontario, motorists can either follow the coast of Lake Superior or head north and cruise through the forested area of Kapuskasing. And west of Winnipeg, travellers can choose to stay on the original stretch and pass through Regina, Calgary and Banff, or take an alternate route further north, along the Yellowhead Highway, that traverses Saskatoon, Edmonton and Jasper.

No matter which route you take or how much time you spend on the highway, however, one thing you’ll never come across is its end: both St. John’s and Victoria claim the prestige of being mile zero of the world’s longest road.

CANADA’S INDIAN COMMUNITY There are over a million—1.26, according to the 2011 National Household Survey—Canadians of Indian descent who live in and contribute to our diverse society. Indian Canadians are positively influencing every sphere of our national identity, with valuable contributions to academia, sports, entertainment, science, business and politics. A few of the more recognizable figures include our current Minister of National Defence, Harjit Sajjan; comedian Russell Peters; award-winning novelist Rohinton Mistry; NHL centre Manny Malhotra; and cardiovascu-

lar research scientist Naranjan Dhalla.

Indians first came to Canada in substantial numbers at the beginning of the 20th century. The majority were Sikh farmers from the Punjab region who settled in British Columbia to make a livelihood in the forestry and mining sectors. However, members of this group were met with widespread racism and discrimination—a regrettably commonplace attitude at the time in western society—and many chose not to remain. Around the same time, government policies were put in place that prevented new waves of Indian immigrants from settling in Canada. These discriminatory policies were held in place for several decades before finally being lifted around the halfway mark of the century.

The next substantial influx of Indians started to arrive in Canada in the late 1960s. This group consisted mainly of skilled professionals, who found employment or started businesses using their expertise within Canada. Many established themselves in Ontario, while a smaller but still significant number chose to build their new homes in British Columbia. These two provinces are home to the largest population of Indian Canadians. Since the late 1990s, approximately 30,000 more Indians immigrate to Canada every year, making them the second most populous ethnic group coming to Canada (behind only the Chinese).

By Calvin Daniels ‘King Wheat’ has been deposed by ‘Queen Canola’ on the Canadian Prairies in terms of being the big-acres crop, and of course in gross dollars generated.

The reasons for the switch over the last half decade, or so, are numerous, including the world appetite for vegetable oil, the unique characteristics of canola oil, the dollars the crop generate, and seed technology in particular herbicide tolerant varieties.

The result is that in the summer the colour yellow is seen in areas that a decade ago farmers would have been reluctant to risk growing the crop.

And as gross dollar returns remain strong farmers have been pushing rotations to the limit, and increasingly past what has long been considered reasonable.

We now see many instances where canola is being planted into fields that grew the crop the year before. That reality inches the growing of canola closer to a monoculture system, and that would seem to hold a high level of risk for canola

down the road.

There is, for example the risk of weed pressure build up, because the same crop tends to have the same chemical packages to work with.

Certainly, herbicide resistance in a growing number of weeds is becoming a problem producers must be aware of.

The first herbicide tolerant weed was discovered in 1975, BASF Technical Marketing Specialist Bryce Geisel told those attending a BASF Knowledge Harvest event held in Yorkton recently.

Since then the number of herbicide tolerant weeds has shown “a pretty strong trajectory going up,” he said at the event, adding “I’m pretty sure the line will keep going up as years go on.”

Additionally, canola has always been a crop where the risk of disease has been a factor, in particular blackleg and sclerotinia stem rot.

More recently clubroot has emerged as a growing issue.

The harder rotations are pushed, the less years between canola plantings, the greater the chance for disease build up. That is com-

mon sense, and something producers have long known, even if they have chosen to push those rotations.

In fact, producers have pushed things so far there are now voices suggesting some pretty stringent procedures to protect the industry.

In a recent Western Producer Keith Downey, one of the researchers who created canola, told the Canola Council of Canada convention March 8, measures may need to be taken.

Downey said in the article he worried the current three resistant genes “are not going to be enough,” and that new ones might not be soon enough. He suggested that existing legislation allowing municipalities to require adequate rotations could be used to stop some farmers from growing canola too often and creating the conditions for chronic clubroot infestation and other problems.

It would be a dramatic step should RMs become involved in legislating what farmers grow, and when it is grown on a piece of land, yet protecting the ‘Queen” may require such steps if producers are not willing to police the situation themselves.

MVP selections could be big hairy deals

No guarantees, of course, but the Most Valuable Player awards in the National Hockey League and National Basketball Association this season could go to players with two of the most famous beards in their respective leagues.

Defenceman Brent Burns of the San Jose Sharks, whose scraggly beard and toothless grin would scare small children even during daylight hours, is getting a lot of MVP love these days, while James Harden of the NBA’s Houston Rockets, with a nicely-groomed beard that covers most of his face, is a strong contender for MVP in his league.

Burns is the first defenceman in a couple of decades to actually challenge for the scoring title, sitting in the top 10 most of the year. His 27 goals are more than double that of the nearest defender. The veteran blueliner, who leads the league in shots on goal (Alex Ovechkin is second), has his Sharks just a few points out of the Western Conference lead.

“It’s amazing to watch,” Sharks coach Pete DeBoer told the San Jose Mercury News. “He’s a generational talent.”

In the NBA, meanwhile, Harden and Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook are making regular news with their ‘triple doubles’ (double figures per game in points, rebounds and assists) and making more headlines than the NBA’s former big two, LeBron James and Steph Curry.

Golden State’s Curry, winner of the last two MVP awards, said he feels Harden should have the upper hand for the MVP award because his team is doing better than is Westbrook’s. Harden’s Rockets are third in the Western Conference while Westbrook’s Thunder languish in sixth. If the award ultimately goes to the best player, Westbrook — who is averaging an unprecedented triple double per game — is likely a lock.

Still, Harden will be the choice of many MVP voters.

“He’s doing everything and not only that, his team is winning,” his teammate, Trevor Ariza, told Michael Lee of Yahoo Sports. “We have a chance to compete for a championship. What he’s doing, I don’t think I’ve personally seen it – live – seen a person play the way he’s playing.”

Next policy framework survey results released Released on March 20, 2017 An online consultation on Saskatchewan’s priorities for the Next Policy Framework (NPF) has wrapped up. The survey ran from November 14, 2016 - January 31, 2017 as part of preparations to replace Growing Forward 2 (GF2). GF2 is the current five-year, federal-provincial-territorial agricultural policy framework agreement which will expire in March 2018.

“Thank you to all who participated,” Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart said. “What we heard from our farmers, ranchers, industry members and the public through this survey will ensure we can focus our efforts and meet the needs of our agriculture industry.”

Survey results from more than 880 respondents show trade and Unreserved Public Farm Auction access to new markets and growing the valueadded/processing sectors are considered the greatest opportunities for Saskatchewan’s agriculture industry. Consumer perceptions of agriculture and changes to market access are among the greatest risks facing the sector. Almost 75 per cent of the survey responses came from Saskatchewan producers. Leko’s Conservation Corner – Trapping For some time now, I have wanted to do a short feature on trapping in Saskatchewan. There seems to be quite a few more people interested in trapping and I am seeing a growing trend of younger people taking up the practice.

There appears to be some misinformation around trapping because coyote prices have been pretty good and there are people out there who think they can make a quick buck. The truth be told, the people who are active trappers and good at it, work very hard at what they do. If you do not take care of your furs, they will be worthless.

In Saskatchewan, we have two main areas in relation to trapping. They are the Northern Fur Conservation Area and the Southern Fur Conservation

Area. Without drawing a map, the northern area is basically all nonleased land in the provincial forest in central and northern Saskatchewan.

This northern zone is broken down into 89 trapping areas that you have to be a member of before being allowed to trap. Those with licences who are voted into a Northern trapping block may only trap on the parcel of land where they are a member. Some Northern Fur Conservation Area trappers own the trapping rights to a specific area and on occasion these areas are offered up for sale.

Common species of animals trapped in the north include: fisher, lynx, marten, mink, wolf and fox, to name a few.

OBITUARIES Edith Shirley Killoh Scott 1934 - 2017 Edie passed away at Arcola Health Center, Arcola, SK., on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017 at the age of 82 years.

Edie’s memory will be forever cherished by her husband Rodney, her daughters Dianne (Jim) Mackey, Valorie Purser (Jake Big Eagle), Patti (Brian) Efford, Vicki (Jim) Thul, Geraldene (Neal) Geysen, Carolyn (Kevin) Lawrence, Linda (Kevin) McAuley. 18 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

She will also be remembered by her brother Lyle (Barb) and sister-in-law Faye as well as nieces and nephews.

Edie was predeceased by her parents, Russ and Sadie Killoh, and her brother Ross.

Edie’s love for cooking and baking was well known and when she opened her own business The Coffee Pot her home made meals and pies were very popular and kept her busy until she retired, but there was always coffee and goodies to be had at her house.

Edie’s girls and their families were her life, she enjoyed attending as many functions as possible, or hearing about the ones she couldn’t.

A funeral service was held at Manor Legion Hall on Saturday, March 2 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Michelle Moore officiating. Internment followed at the Manor Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Orsted Funeral Home, Carlyle, SK. There’s no greater love than the love you have for your mother. But there’s no greater loss than when she leaves and goes to heaven.

Edie’s family would like to thank Orsted Funeral Home, Michelle Moore for the lovely service.

Betty Jack for sitting at the register and heart warming poem. Grace, Teresa, Karen and Micki for organizing and serving lunch, and for everyone who donated food. Also thanks to Teresa for making the bulletins. Special thanks to Toby, Tim and Nolan for all your help. Thank you all for the food brought to the house, flowers, cards, hugs and words of comfort.

Anita Thornton Anita Thornton passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at the age of 83 years, following a short hospital stay where she was surrounded by generations of family at her side. Wife of the late Edgar, Anita was dearest mother of Nancy; Jill (Kevin), granddaughters Sarah and Randene (Christopher), great-grandchildren Hannah and Alex; David (Mary-Lynn), granddaughters Kate and Halle; Jeff (Christine), grandchildren Maya and Carter. She is also survived by her brothers Gary (Vivian) Hofley, Dale (Jill) Hofley and Mark Hofley; sisters Karen Klenk, Andrea (Jack) Gillespie, and Terri Lynn Tomaszewski; as well as sisters-in-law Isabel Harvey, Bernice Patterson and Lois Stewart.

Anita was predeceased by parents Norman and Veronica Hofley; sister Janet Lawitzke and brothers Neal and Brian Hofley; mother and father-in-law John and Mary Thornton; brothers-in-law Mac Harvey, Lloyd Stewart and Bob Lawitzke. The oldest of ten children, Anita was born in Lampman, SK. Anita was a teacher until the birth of Jill, when she turned her attention to teaching at home. Her children are grateful for that attention, love and support and are all in agreement that there could be no better role model or Mom than Anita. She also served as a librarian, was an active farmer with her husband Edgar, and was very busy in the church and community and in provincial and federal politics. Funeral Service for Anita was held at St. Andrews United Church, 220 Carlyle Street, Arcola, SK, on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. followed by a lunch at the Arcola Legion. The family would like to express deep gratitude and appreciation to the Pasqua Hospital emergency staff, nurses on the third floor and particularly to the Pasqua Palliative care staff. Margaret Helen Chicoine June 15, 1931 - Nottingham, Saskatchewan March 17, 2017 - Calgary, Alberta Margaret Chicoine of Calgary, AB, passed away on March 17, 2017 at the age of 85 years.

Margaret was born in Redvers, Saskatchewan to Hugo and Johanna Nissen on June 15, 1931. The youngest of five children, she attended school in Redvers and worked for a short time as a telephone operator. On December 10, 1953 she married Alcide Chicoine in Storthoaks, Saskatchewan and entered her chosen field as that of a homemaker for her husband and three children. As a musician, Margaret played at countless dances, strumming and singing her way through Southern Saskatchewan, Manitoba and North Dakota with her band, ‘The Drifters’. Her skills as home decorator and landscaper extraordinaire were on display at each of her homes: the first on farmland outside of Storthoaks, Saskatchewan and her second (after Al was transferred in 1979) in the city of Calgary, Alberta. Margaret and Al also spent many fun-filled summers at their beloved cabin at Carlyle Lake, and after Al retired, they spent many more fun-filled winters down south in Florida.

Margaret is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Corinne and Andy Martel, and Beverley Chicoine and Harry Enevoldsen; her son Blaine; her grandchildren, Shannon Martel (Trevor), Dallas (Kelley) Martel, Kent (Randi) Martel, Graham (Amanda) Martel, Ryan (Shelby) Enevoldsen, Adam Enevoldsen, Tyler Chicoine, Reagan Chicoine and Kirsten Chicoine; as well as nine great-grandchildren, Shayden, Sierra, Roen, London, Briar, Addison, Nixon, Aubrey, and Nova.

Margaret is predeceased by her husband of fifty-eight years, Alcide; her daughter-in-law, Rose Warnock; her parents Hugo and Johanna Nissen; and her siblings, Louise, Hugo, Johanna and Christina.

From Page 23 - Conservation Corner The southern zone is a different concept. This zone is south of the provincial forest and is made up of primarily privately-owned land.

Licensed trappers must obtain permission from the owners of these lands in order to legally trap there.

Common species harvested in the south for their fur include: coyote, fox, muskrat, beaver and weasel.

Trapping is a learned skill that is often passed down from parent to child.

There are procedures and practices that some do which makes their form of trapping a true skill.

Trapping has changed greatly in recent years with significant changes to the types of traps allowed to be used. International humane trapping standards have been instituted and Canada is a leader in the development of humane traps. In Saskatchewan, The Wildlife Regulations require certified traps for the capture of furbearing animals. The annual Hunters’ and Trappers’ Guide lists the lawful traps for each species. Only certified traps or traps that have been modified to improve humaneness may be used.

Common traps which are lawful for use include body gripping (quick kill) traps and restraining (foot hold or cage traps). The use of snares is specifically regulated and requires special authorization before use.

Please check with your local conservation officer before doing this, as we do not issue these to just anyone with a licence. There are also a variety of other regulations that licensed trappers must follow while preforming regular trapping activities. These rules regulate how often traps must be checked, procedures when trapping near homes, land right of access and firearm and vehicle use. Once again, it is best to check with a conservation officer if you have any questions.

Q: How do I get a trappers licence?

You must be a minimum of 12 years of age, a Saskatchewan resident, and have successfully passed a recognized trappers exam or course, regardless of your age.

If you have held a trappers licence in the past, you are exempt from the trapper course.

In addition to the trapper course, you must also pass the Saskatchewan Hunter Education Course.

Q: Is there an open season for trapping in Saskatchewan?

Species like the coyote can be hunted all year round in the south, but not in the north zones.

Most fur species are managed similarly to other game species, with established seasons. These seasons generally correspond to the time period that the fur animal is prime – meaning the pelt is fully developed and has reached maximum value.

Depending upon the species, most seasons start on either October 15 or November 1. Check the Saskatchewan Hunters’ and Trappers’ Guide for correct opening and closing dates, available each year at saskatchewan.ca/ hunting.

Q: If I shoot a coyote, can I sell it to a trapper?

No, the only way you can legally sell any fur is if you have a valid trappers’ licence. The person buying the fur must also have a fur buyer licence. A licensed trapper cannot purchase furs from a non-licensed coyote hunter.

Q: What is the cost of hunting and trapping licences now that fees have gone up?

Effective April 1, 2017, the cost of a Saskatchewan resident hunting and trapping licence will increase by $10.

There is also an increase of $5 for Wildlife Habitat Certificates.

Canadian and non-resident hunting licence fees are also increasing and a new $50 wolf hunting licence will be made available to Saskatchewan residents.

Fees for angling licences have also increased, as have fines for fishery and wildlife offences.

Consult the 2017 Anglers’ Guide at saskatchewan.ca/fishing for specific changes to angling licence fees, and the Hunters’ and Trappers’ Guide when it becomes available later this year.

Gov’t. must take on tough drainage issue

By Murray Mandryk There are worse things than Saskatchewan’s division between urban and rural people, something that’s been apparent in the lead-up to week’s provincial budget.

What may be worse is seeing rural people are pitted against rural people.

And, sadly, that’s exactly what issues like illegal drainage are now doing … and have been doing for several years.

If you live in rural Saskatchewan, this issue will not be new to you … although it might not be the kind of issue that you have cared to ever bring up in pleasant conversation.

As Ray Orb, Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) put it in a recent interview: Put 100 farmers in a room and you will get 50 farmers complaining about drainage on their land and 50 other farmers wanting arguing for more drainage with less restrictions.

As such, it’s one of those issues that clearly pits neighbour against neighbour, something that’s never good for rural communities that must pull together to deal with issues.

This is where government must step in and demonstrate some leadership. To some small extent, this is what Environment Minister Scott Moe is at least attempting to do.

Last fall, Moe’s Saskatchewan Party government moved Bill 44, Amendments to the Water Security Act, that aim to bolster existing regula-

tions.

“The goal is to control (drainage),” Moe said in a recent interview, adding that he sees little need to impose a moratorium on the practice.

During second reading debate on amendments to the Water Security Act, Moe stressed his government’s co-operative approach to the issue.

The biggest change will be a move to a “permit based” system rather than the old “complaint based” system that seems more inclined to pit neighbour against neighbour.

He also noted last month’s success of the Dry Lake agreement. It’s a joint agreement involving 73 landowners in the Gooseberry Lake Watershed in southeastern corner of the province designed to co-operatively control overflows and reduce flooding. Included in the agreement is the operation of 30 gate structures to hold back the water in critical situation.

However, many people, from hydrologists to farmers, see this response as far too tepid to deal with the magnitude of the problem.

In fairness, to Moe and his Sask. Party government, the problem of illegal draining has occurred over decades and many different governments that were also reluctant to even enforce what laws were in existence.

However, the ability and motivation to use trackhoes to drain sloughs and dig drainage has changed the game.

The Saskatchewan Water Security Agency

(WSA) now estimates there are between 100,000 and 150,000 illegal drainage distance in the province.

That has created dozens upon dozens of situations like Dry Lake, many of which translate into hostilities in the communities.

Farmers complain bigger operators give them a choice between either digging an illegal ditch through their land that’s being flooding or selling their land.

The problem is, all this water eventually makes its way somewhere and that somewhere is often swollen creeks.

Often, it’s individual farmers or cattlemen (who locate operations need good water and good hay land) who bear the brunt.

But nowhere in the province is the problem bigger than at the Quill Lakes. What were once three lakes have become one that’s now exceeded its banks by 6.8 metres. There are 30,000 acres flooded by the Quills’ salty waters.

John Pomeroy, Canada Research Chair in Water Resources and Climate Change at the University of Saskatchewan, puts it bluntly: “We stop what we are doing.”

Moe said his government simply can’t fix things overnight, but the minister doesn’t think the drainage problem is insurmountable.

“Its like how you eat an elephant,” Moe said.

“One bite at a time.”

Agricultural Safety Week Proclaimed in Saskatchewan The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed March 12 to 18 as Agricultural Safety Week in Saskatchewan.

“With spring seeding approaching, it’s important that our industry keeps on-farm health and safety in the forefront of our minds,” Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart said. “This week serves an important reminder for all of us to review our farm safety plans and ensure that anyone who works, lives or visits a farm is staying safe.”

Agricultural Safety Week in Saskatchewan is recognized each year in conjunction with Canadian Agricultural Safety Week, a partnership between the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, as a way of raising awareness of on-farm safety issues.

“Farming is physically demanding and often hazardous work,” Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan said. “I’d like

to remind everyone working in agriculture that the best way to ensure safety is through a safety program. Make sure you and your employees have the training to operate equipment, and that you stay rested and alert so you can keep yourselves safe.”

This year, Canadian Agricultural Safety Week is focused on appealing to adults. It focuses on providing adults the tools to understand the challenges unique to their farm and how to best keep every generation in their family safe.

“These products have some cutting edge traits that farmers are looking for and Pioneer really tries to be a step ahead with their varieties,” Stacy added. “For example there’s two new canola varieties this year: the 45M35 variety is a shatter tolerant variety which you can swath or straight cut depending on what works best for you and the 45CS40 is both clubroot and sclerotinia resistant which with how wet everything has been, wet can be a breeding ground for fungus, that can be devastating. They really have some leading traits that we’re interested in.”

Stacy explained that in the area corn and soybeans are both relatively new crops, which Pioneer offers a variety of to best suit your operation.

“Corn is fairly new to the area, it came in about 10 years ago, and wasn’t really common before,” Stacy said. “But, with varieties that have shortened growing days we can now grow it here.”

“We grow grain corn on our operation and there are quite a few growers in the area now for grain corn, but a lot of local guys who are ranching are also getting into growing corn for silage – that’s getting to be a pretty standard practice for the cattle guys now.”

Stacy also spoke to soybeans: “Soybeans have been a popular crop in Manitoba, but it is rather new to Saskatchewan.”

“Soybeans are in high demand this year because it’s been so wet in recent years and when you’re growing pulses like peas and lentils, the excess moisture can set up mould in the plant, which hurts your yield; so, soybeans are an alternative to the standard wheat and pulse crops in Saskatchewan. Pioneer has a range of products that adapt well, both earlier and later maturing varieties, depending on what works best for growers.”

The Brownridges conduct trials each year as well to provide information to growers interested in the Pioneer varieties: “By doing trials we can actually show growers the product and give our findings to Pioneer, but for the best understanding of a crop in an area it’s important that the trial is done locally.

Growing something here is different from somewhere else in Saskatchewan.”

Excitingly, one of their customers, Todd Wilson, entered the Pioneer Yield Hero competition this past year, which is open to those using Pioneer va-

rieties. While growing canola, 45H33, Wilson realized his crop was doing rather well and entered the competition. The Brownridges went out to weigh the bushels per acre being brought in, at 68 bushels per acre, they were sure it would be a finalist. It turned out they were the runner’s up with a farmer from Milestone bringing in 75 bushels per acre. However, the Milestone farmer was unable to attend the award, which was a trip to the Brier semi-finals in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

“It’s a neat opportunity,” Stacy stated. “It’s a reward for growing a great crop and showing great results achieved through this product. It’s just something different and a nice reward for a real achievement.”

It’s a basic truth that every farmer MUST understand.

You could be the biggest...richest farmer in the area.

You might have brand new equipment that is worth millions of dollars. You might farm the very best land.

You might be watching the ‘perfect season’ that you always thought was a myth...unfold right before your eyes.

But if you don’t make SURE that you are putting good seed in the ground in the spring...then everything you do after you seed could be a waste of time... and quite likely a HUGE waste of money.

Everything...begins with the seed.

Helping farmers be certain that they are using good seed...the RIGHT seed...is work that Brent McCarthy and the people at McCarthy Seeds takes very seriously.

Brent explains that McCarthy Seeds grew up out of a desire that is common to most farmers.

“My Dad started the company in 1980. He’d sold the cows...and he wanted to find something else that he could do to ‘keep busy’. So, he bought a Seed Cleaner and began doing custom cleaning. That was what the business was.”

It was after Brent took over the business and decided to take the company in a different direction.

“I took over the company, and five years ago I decided that we weren’t going to do custom cleaning anymore. Instead, we have gone into pedigree seed production and sales. As the company has evolved, the farm evolved with it. My dad used to farm 2,000 acres. The farm has since expanded to 4,000 acres... and 70% of the land is used for pedigree seed production.”

Brent explains that the process of putting new seed varieties into farmer’s hands starts with the Plant Breeder.

“A Plant Breeder’s goal is to produce a new variety of seed for sale. When we decide to go with a particular seed variety, we go to the Plant Breeder and obtain a 15 Kilo bag of the seed. That bag of seed might represent ten years of effort for the Plant Breeder. These people do good work, and they invest a lot in the varieties that they develop. When they hand a bag of seed to us, they really are trusting us NOT to mess up all of their hard work!”

Once they have that bag of seed, Brent says that it can take another 4-5 years before the seed becomes available to the farmer.

“When we begin growing the seed in order to propagate it, there are several stages that we have to go through until we’ve taken that variety to the point where we can start selling it as certified seed. Through each stage, there are very specific specifications involving purity rate and isolation rate (along with other factors) that we have to meet. And every year, independent inspectors come in to examine the seed. So, when a farmer buys certified seed from us, they can be certain that seed has gone through a very rigorous process, to make sure that it is EXACTLY what we say it is.”

Brent notes that there are several benefits to using pedigree seed for farmers...no matter what kind of farming operation they are involved in.

“Different plant varieties are being developed to deal with specific challenges. There are varieties of wheat, for example, that are specifically bred to be resistant to things like Wheat Midge and Fusarium. Things

And, because an organic farmer can’t use spray to control these things; they are very happy to be able to get some assistance from the plant’s genetics. And of course, there is always work being done to improve things like protein and yield.”

Brent notes that McCarthy Seeds offers a variety of different crop options to their customers.

“We offer a broad range of different crops. Most of our crops are cereals. But, we also have flax and pulse crops (particularly peas available too. We are also moving into soybeans, and the future for that crop looks very bright.”

Brent says that pedigree seed production can be much more ‘labor intensive’ than commercial farming.

“Being a seed grower means that you have to worry about things an average commercial farmer doesn’t have to consider. You have to make sure that each seed variety is grown so that it is properly isolated. And, you have to be certain that EVERYTHING is clean. I don’t know of many farmers that take their combine down to the dug-out and wash the entire thing out...each time they move into a different crop. But, things like washing out the combine...and all of our equipment...is just a normal routine for us.”

Intercropping cash crops gaining popularity Kelly Running Observer Staff

Many will know Colin Rosengren of Midale for his efforts as part of the Three Farmers Brands, although part of his notoriety, Rosengren is a mixed farmer who has taken to intercropping annual cash crops; a practice which is just now gaining momentum in the prairies where monocropping is the norm.

“We’re still learning and still adapting this system; there’s lots to learn as we go,” Rosengren stated during a talk at the Moose Mountain Ag Day held in Arcola on March 8. “If we take a look back in time and look at what the ground was before we got here; it was a multispecies ecosystem. Native land, all around the world, there are multiple species growing, it’s not a monoculture anywhere; so, what we’re doing in Saskatchewan isn’t a natural process. A mixed cropping system is more natural.”

In North America, First Nations people had developed farming practices which allowed them to cultivate corn, beans, and squash – the Three Sisters.

“It was a sustainable system for them,” Rosengren stated. “They didn’t have mechanization or chemistry like we do now, but they had a system which allowed them to grow crops every year.”

“In other areas of the world, in Indonesia, they harvest corn by hand in that area, and they harvest it in amongst the palm trees. The trees shade the corn and keep it from getting sunburnt and it helps keep the soil stable when the crops aren’t there. It’s not highly productive, but if they took everything else out and just grew a monocrop they wouldn’t be able to sustain it for very long.”

As with the majority of farmers in the prairies, Rosengren monocropped; it was tradition, mechanization of the agriculture industry meant that it was simply easy for farmers on the prairies to efficiently

seed a large area with relative simplicity. Additionally, chemistry and the ability to use fertilizers or use herbicides/pesticides/fungicides allowed monocropping to succeed.

“Why did we start doing this system?” Rosengren asked the rhetorical question.

It was in 2004-2005 and were looking for a way to maximize their efforts in the field: “We had read some research out of the University of Manitoba where they were doing canola/peas and the net returns were higher… and the risks were lower; it appeared the only challenge was going to be how we make it work.”

“It looked good on the spreadsheet,” Rosengren stated, however, the change made sense. “We went back and looked at a natural ecosystem: different species were growing together, we don’t see the saline like we were in our fields – there were spots where things didn’t grow in our annuals, but we didn’t notice that in our pastures – so we felt by getting a more diverse cropping mix we’d be able to take advantage of the natural system and have productivity in different areas of the field.”

Rosengren added that intercropping also acts as a way to mitigate disease/pests as an alternative to chemical treatments: “They say we can’t change the weather or the environment, but we actually can.

Half of that environment we’re dealing with is the soil, so by changing the soil structure, the soil health, learning and managing things differently we can improve the soil. That improves the environment.”

“We can also do something about the host. When we mix the crops and get a more diverse cropping mix there, we’ve weakened that host; we don’t have a monoculture that is 100 percent dense of that same crop, so that disease isn’t going to take hold as much.

A pest isn’t going to come and prefer that field nearly as much because we can mask it.”

“We’ve observed things over the years such as flea beetles. I had an etymologist tell me that if a flea beetle doesn’t land on a host crop four times in a row it keeps moving. So, when we have a mixed crop of peas and canola the odds of him hitting the canola four times in a row aren’t very high; they keep moving. We have seeded canola that’s been untreated and sometimes there’s been flea beetle damage, but we’ve also had neighbours in those years that were spraying their canola fields that were treated seed; where as in the mixed crop we weren’t seeing that.”

Chemical treatments tends to be one of the first questions people ask when it comes to intercropping. Rosengren admits that they do use some chemical treatments, but not to the same extent as most.

“There’s different approaches to controlling weeds,” he explained. “Only one of them is herbicides and we do still have that option with mixed crops, but there’s other options. The take home note is the more vigorous your crop is, the earlier jump you have, and the more you manage your crop ahead of those weeds then they’re not going to compete.”

“One of the main tricks that organic farmers know, is to seed heavier. Why don’t we seed our normal crops heavier?

Well, that introduces problems with lodging and problems with disease; but, with a mixed crop, now the optimum plant density can be higher because we’re not dealing with that lodging and disease again. We can have a higher plant population which sets up a higher yield potential and it competes better with weeds.”

They began trials, starting with canola and peas, because of the pains peas are during harvest: “You’re scraping in the dirt for lodged peas; bringing in rocks; which, that goes away when you seed them with canola because canola keeps them standing. Likewise with the canola, we wanted to be able to straight cut it and the older varieties were pretty much swath only. Additionally nitrogen costs have become quite high and we looked at how we could reduce costs, so planting peas with the canola actually helped fix the nitrogen in the crop.”

As with any new practices, it’s been a learning experience in the field discovering what grows best with what and how.

“We’ve found it’s more beneficial for the crops to be mixed, so their roots can grow together, as opposed to separate rows; so we’ve gone to mixed crops with the exception of flax and chickpeas,” Rosengren explained.

Rosengren’s first experiences growing corn had a large learning curve: “The first year we tried corn, we seeded it with an air drill and it was kind of a disaster. There were a few plants here, then a large space, and a couple plants there. So, we just went in and did a burn off operation that killed off everything except for the corn and we figured we spent too much on the corn, so decided to drill flax into it at that stage.”

“It worked quite well because the corn was up high enough before the flax became a pest that it had decided on its yield potential already and it was shading the flax. It was keeping the moisture down there and when the flax began to flower it was in a sheltered environment. …there is likely a CO2 fertilizer effect happening here too, same as in a greenhouse where they pump in carbon dioxide to improve the plant’s growth. We’ve seen studies of corn and soybeans where it enhances the growth of the plant underneath it because it will hold in the respiration from the soil, it gets trapped in the canopy.”

The next year, they attempted to seed the flax and corn at the same time, but because of the way the plants grow, this time the flax took off quickly and the corn was left behind: “It looked like a flax crop, the corn was trapped underneath and it was trying to decide its yield potential with all this competition around it.

Intercropping cash crops gaining popularity Then when the corn shot up it was at the same time my flax was trying to fill and I ended up with flax straw and empty bulbs and corn stalks with short cobs. We learned how important it is to understand the growth habits of each crop to get the staging right. Two crops that can work very well together can be disastrous too if we don’t manage them correctly and understand how they’re growing.”

Camelina, which is what Three Farmers is built on, was one that Rosengren was growing as a monocrop.

“It became very disease prone, which was affecting our oil quality, which we were bottling ourselves, and it was affecting our yields,” Rosengren explained.

“So, we tried to grow it with red lentils and as soon as we did that the camelina yields rebounded and the red lentil yields were also high… It had a specific reason, to clear up the disease problems we were having in our camelina, but the other thing it did was make it easier to clean – there’s the little pods with camelina and the little cups will break in half making it nearly impossible to sift out – and when we combined them with the lentils, that extra grain sifting down through the mixture was enough for the seeds to sift and sort from the pods; so, our harvest speeds were doubled and our sample was cleaned up. Even if the lentils weren’t worth a cent per pound we would still grow the two crops together for these benefits.”

They began growing corn and soy beans as well, which has spaced out the corn in their fields better through using an air seeder and have not had to buy a corn seeder to grow corn. By putting the beans with the corn, Rosengren has found that the beans are yielding the same as what a monocrop would, while adding approximately half to two thirds of a corn crop to that with minimal added nitrogen and no need for corn equipment. According to Rosengren, even harvest doesn’t require special equipment because if an ear of corn falls off, there is enough matter that it’s caught and brought through the header.

The only difficulty with growing these two together is that they have had to seek the smallest soy bean variety to grow and they harvest them when the bean is dry and the corn is tough as a way to get the greatest size difference. Then they sort through: the corn

“So the 10 percent in the middle we can’t separate,” Rosengren explained. “but we’re using it in our cattle rations and it turns out it’s a perfect balance when that is mixed half and half with barley.”

The only time intercropping looks a little bit dif-

ferent on his farm, however, is when he is growing chickpeas and flax: “In this crop we’re really trying to grow the chickpeas and the flax we’re using as a wind break to stop the spread of the ascochyta in the chickpeas. We seed it in two rows of flax and two rows of chickpeas, then we seed it on an angle against the predominant wind to stop the spread of ascochyta spores.

Hope for the best but prepare for the worst Head for the Hills Veterinary Health Services Carlyle, Redvers & Kipling, Saskatchewan With many producers about to embark on another calving/lambing season, it is good to review the stages of calving/lambing. Gestation length varies between 279-289 days in cattle and 144-155 days in sheep.

There are three stages: 1. Cervical Dilation (softening of ligaments, udder development, nesting behavior, mucous plug expelled, but no abdominal pushing) –about six hours 2. Fetal expulsion (water bag appears, abdominal pushing)-about 2 hours long • Give 1.5 hours of “pushing” for part of calf or lamb to appear • Give another 30-45 minutes after part of the calf or lamb is showing for it to be born 3. Placental expulsion (usually “clean” within 2-6 hours, longer than 12 hours is considered a retained placenta) If any one of the stages takes longer than

anticipated, it may be a sign that the animal is in distress and needs assistance.

Although the above times are a guideline to a normal calving or lambing, sometimes difficulties arise. A dystocia is a difficult or problematic birth. A producer can expect about 10-15% dystocias in heifers and 3-5% in cows. Rates of dystocias can be influenced by choosing easy calving bulls, culling cows with a previous history of problems, proper nutrition, breeding cows at an appropriate weight and age. Breed, age, nutrition, body condition score, pelvic area, genetics, sex of calf/lamb, size of dam and calf can all play a role in whether things go smoothly or not. If a calf/lamb is in a forward presentation, that is much easier than a backwards or breech (bum first) presentation.

An upside down position or an abnormal posture (i.e. leg or head back) are also examples when someone needs to intervene.

Variations from the normal: Ring womb- This is when the cow’s/ewe’s

cervix only partially opens despite having adequate time to dilate. Ring womb prevents the calf/lamb from being able to pass through the birth canal. Often a C-section is required.

Uterine torsion- This is when the uterus flips over thus blocking the birth canal. When the producer puts his arm in to check the cow, the arm tends to twist or rotate in a corkscrew fashion, indicating a problem. Occasionally the veterinarian will try to detorse the uterus with a detorsion bar or do a c-section.

Twins/Triplets- This is when multiple babies are born at one time.

Backwards- A cow can calf a backwards calf on her own; however, her birth canal needs to be larger to accommodate a backwards birth.

Sometimes these end up needing a C-section.

Breech- This is when the calf is trying to be born “bum first” (no legs are visible). Breech births require intervention.

Intercropping cash crops gaining popularity Continued from page 10 We sort of think about a fungicide application by the time most farmers are on their fourth application in a monoculture. We’ve never sprayed more than one pass of fungicide in this system.”

Two plants, which could be a couple of feet apart, might look very different. One could be diseased, but the other one is healthy: “With flax rows in between it can only spread to the plants beside it, it can’t spread 360 degrees. …In monocultures I’d find that you’d find this plant diseased and then from there a big tear drop shape spread in the direction of the wind where all of the plants are getting infected… the architecture of the layout of [the chickpea/flax] crop means we don’t have to be quite as on top of it. I might lost this one plant, but it’s not the same economic effect as if it were spread massively in a field.”

Taking intercropping a step further, Rosengren is now working with combining three different plants into one crop: “We went back to nature and noticed that a crop needs to not only be mixed, but that it needs to be a different mixture according to the soil, water availability, and topography. We noticed there’s a different mixture of plants over very short distances. It’s not this guy’s field and that guy’s field, but within a couple of feet in the same field.”

“Canola is more saline tolerant, lentils grow well in dry – so on hilltops, and peas grow well in the wetter areas. We don’t completely turn the peas off

within the mix, because we’ve found that just canola and lentils means the canola is prone to shattering because it’s higher up than the lentils and when it’s swathed the lentils are on the bottom and the canola on the top; but if you just use a half a bushel of peas, then that’s enough to tie the mixture together. It lets you swath it and it stays mixed, or you can straight cut it because the canola is tangled up in the peas.”

“What we’re working on and moving towards is that something is always alive when you look to nature and something is always growing; so, we want to take advantage of what’s there and keep the biology active in the soil.”

Making this goal work is a challenge, but Rosengren has also been involved with Clean Seed Capital’s new CX-6 SmartSeeder, which will allow the most varied application of a field to date based on this focus.

“Certainly we’re working on developing this machine that we’re going to use this spring, so we have some extra capabilities, but there’s always a way,” Rosengren stated. “The first intercrops we grew, we used an old outfit, you can make it happen, it’s just a manner of planning ahead of time and seeing how and what you need to do.”

When it comes to harvest, Rosengren explained that things actually got easier: “The pulse crops were standing taller, there was better clearance, the peas held the canola together and the swaths weren’t blowing away or we found we could straight cut it too. It’s been an improvement for us: it cleaned the

grain sample for us, there was less losses out of the combine, and we could travel at higher speeds in the combine.”

“We just had to think ahead when it came to separating seeds and at first just used a rotary drum cleaner.”

It then evolved from having bins in a line and a little bit of work to move equipment once a bin filled to putting their grain bins in a circle, putting their conveyors on pivots, and adding a large scale market cleaner. Now with three crops to be separated, they’ve raised the system off the ground and let gravity do the work. The two largest seeds are separated down conveyers, while the third type of seed filters into a grain truck underneath.

Rosengren says that the practice offers low risk as he is using less input costs – less fertilizer, less chemical – while also benefitting from increased yields. Additionally, in the event of a dry year, the mixture of crops simply means his lentils will be more dominant in the mixture or if it is a wetter year then the peas would be more dominant.

Occasionally the breach calf is too big to be repositioned, or having been repositioned, it is discovered the birth canal is too small to accomodate that calf. In those cases, a c-section may be the next option.

Uterine prolapse- Otherwise known

as “throwing her calf bed”, this is a veterinary emergency. This is when a cow continues to push after the calf is born, and she pushes her uterus completely out. The cow must be restrained and the veterinarian called immediately, as this can lead to the cow bleeding to death. If the cow survives this, she can go on to have many more calves and rarely repeats the uterine prolapse. A difficult

pull, a lack of calcium, magnesium, protein, or giving birth on a slope can predispose the cow to a uterine prolapse. Getting the cow up as soon as possible following calving will help prevent this. Your veterinarian may be able to recommend medications and mineral protocols to help prevent this as well.

Hypoxic calves-These are babies that lack oxygen because of a stressful or too slow birth. Often they have a yellow discoloration. This is due to the meconium or first feces being passed by the calf, while in the uterus. Yellow discoloration indicates an emergency and the calf will need to be born soon or it will not survive. Once a hypoxic calf is born, a bit more attention to making sure it gets colostrum

The best way to get through calving/ lambing season is to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Muddy lots, crowding, and chilling can increase numbers of sick and severity of disease significantly. A safe place to put a cow needing assistance (i.e. a calving pen with a head gate and sides that swing around) will keep the handler safe as well as prevent the cow from injuring themselves or the unborn calf. (Calving pens should be cleaned and disinfected between calvings.) Having a plan for transportation, in case an emergency trip to the veterinary clinic arises can cut back on the stress of having to line up a trailer or get roads plowed in the face of an emergency.

Healing comes without words Connie Schwalm Kipling Citizen staff

There can be a particular intimacy woven into the relationship between a person...and a horse.

Nancy Maurer has seen the healing that can grow out of that connection.

Nancy made the decision to transform her farm into ‘Discovery Ranch’ not long after she retired.

“The ranch has been in our family forever. We used to be a mixed farm and dairy operation. After that ended...we were left with this place...three dogs...and the horses. When I retired form my ‘paying job’, I decided that I really wanted to do something with the horses.”

Along with her riding horses, Nancy owns miniature horses. It was the ‘minis’ that first gave Nancy a glimpse of what her horses might be capable of doing.

“I had been taking my minis to the care home. When I saw the way that the people there reacted to them, I was inspired to look into what I might be able to do that involved the therapeutic use of horses.”

Her on-line research led Nancy to EAGALA...an organization that promotes the use of horses to assist people in healing a variety of emotional and psychological hurts. Nancy decided that this was the ‘right fit’...and the process of transforming Mainline Holsteins...into Discovery Ranch...began.

Healing comes without words From Page 13 “Making this happen involved travelling along a HUGE learning curve” Nancy says with a laugh. “There were a lot of choices that had to be made.

For example, I had to decide whether I was going to do this for profit...or go the not-for-profit route. I actually tried doing it for profit at first, and it didn’t go well. So, we became a not-for profit organization. It means that we rely completely on grants, donations and fees for service. But, it seems to work much better this way.”

Nancy says that working with horses can be therapeutic for people facing a variety of different challenges.

“This type of therapy can be applied to so many different kinds of issues.

People with mental health issues...PTSD...behavioural problems...eating disorders...grief...communication difficulties...and a range of other issues...can ALL benefit from this kind of therapy.”

She notes that a person’s age does not create any barriers in this sort of therapy either.

“The youngest client that we’ve had so far, was six. The oldest, so far, was in their fifties. We do approach therapy differently for a child than an adult.

With a child, we lean more towards making it a learning session. With adults, there is more metaphorical learning. We encourage them to visualize how what happens in the arena can apply to their lives outside of it. It helps them look at their lives from a different perspective and gain some new ideas about how to move through their challenges.”

The results of this therapy can be striking.

“I remember one young man in particular” says Nancy. “He’d been in foster care since he was four. By the time he came here, he was into drugs and self harm. He cared nothing about school. When he first came, he wasn’t very willing to open up. One of the first exercise we had him go through was to set up various obstacles into an obstacle course. We told him that he wasn’t to tell us what each obstacle was...but each one was to represent an obstacle or challenge that was preventing him from moving forward in his life. We then had him take the horse through the obstacle course.”

“He was able to take the horse through every obstacle...until he came to the last one. The horse absolutely REFUSED to have ANYTHING to do with that last obstacle...wouldn’t even go near it. That refusal made a huge impact on the young man. He told us afterwards that that particular obstacle represented his thoughts of suicide.”

Nancy pauses...remembering the moment. Then she continues, “How did the horse know? We don’t interpret things like that for people.

But the impact of that moment was very powerful. That young man has been with us for two years now. He’s moved away from the negative influences

The horse says ‘hi’ to a couple of kids from 4H who were visiting the Ranch. that were damaging him. He’s no longer engaging in self-destructive behaviour. There are still some issues that he’s working through...but he IS working through them. He’s loves coming here. He tells us that this is his ‘Happy Place’.”

For Nancy...moments like those validate her decision to launch Discovery Ranch...and are the best reward that all the hard work could ever bring.

“That’s what I do this for...those ‘goose-bump moments’. That’s when you really know that you’re having an impact on somebody’s future.”

Although Nancy admits that there may come a day when she and her family are no longer involved in this work...she remains certain that Discovery Ranch will continue.

“The farm itself belongs to Darryl and I. Discovery Ranch operates out of our facility and uses our horses for its work. Someday, this place might be sold. None of our kids are involved in farming, so it’s not likely that it will stay in the family. But even if that happened...Discovery Ranch WILL continue to exist somewhere else. It has to. The work that’s done through Discovery Ranch is just too important.”

Page 11’s article discussed calvings, and some of the difficulties surrounding them. Once you have struggled through getting that live calf on the ground, there are some things that can be done to encourage its survival.

• Making certain the mother and calf have bonded well will ensure the calf gets good opportunities to nurse whenever it is hungry. It will help if a predator tries to take the calf, to have a cow that knows she has a calf to defend and keep close.

• A newborn calf may be stressed at the time of birth if it is born too slowly, if it was a difficult pull, etc. Yellow discoloration is actually the calf’s first

feces passed in utero because it was severely stressed. Special care of the newborn to get it up and running can pay off in the long run.

• Getting the calf dry and warm will help it to survive. Calves that get chilled or have a low food intake are prone to pneumonia and scours. A hotbox or area with a heat lamp can be invaluable, but even bringing that chilled calf up to the house until it is dry and given colostrum will suffice in a pinch.

Sometimes kids can be a great asset when it comes to giving that extra bit of attention to a newborn. Bottle feeding the calf is fun and teaches responsibility at the same time.

We’ve gotta live calf! Now what?

Continued from page 14 • If a calf is born alive, but is not breathing well on its own, setting it upright and rubbing its sides to stimulate it, and the good ol’ piece of straw up the nose trick may be all it needs. There are respiratory stimulants (pharmaceutical products) your veterinarian may also recommend that you keep on hand for such emergencies. The practice of hanging the calf upside down and letting the amniotic uid drain has fallen out of favor; because the pressure of the calf’s abdominal organs on its diaphragm may actually hinder its ability to inhale. If the calf seems really full of uid, hanging it upside down for just a few seconds should suďŹƒce.

Every newborn needs colostrum (Mom’s ďŹ rst milk) as soon as possible.

The colostrum is essentially the calf’s only chance at survival, because it is the calf’s immune system. A calf that does not get a proper amount of colostrum soon enough following birth, will not form a mature immune system until about 6 months of age. A farm/ranch environment is much too contaminated with everyday germs, viruses, and bacteria for a calf to live half a year with little to no immunity. A calf that does not get colostrum (or enough of it) tends to get ill over and over again, eventually succumbing to a virus or bacteria. If there is a question as to whether or not a calf has received enough colostrum, the veterinarian can do a simple blood test to give a rough estimate as to whether there has been a failure of passive transfer. Ideally the calf should get colostrum within the ďŹ rst 2 hours of being born. Colostrum ingested up to 6 hours after birth is still quite eective. By the time the calf is 12 hours old; its gut is beginning to shut itself down to the availability of absorbing colostrum antibodies. Two meals of colostrum are recommended.

Commercially packaged powdered colostrum is available in dierent concentrations (i.e. dierent amounts of antibodies/immunoglobulins) or one can simply make sure the calf gets sucking from its mom. Some people will milk a cow once she has calved and store some of that â€œďŹ rst milkâ€? or colostrum in the freezer rather than purchase commercial colostrum.

Calves absorb the antibodies the best when they suck from their mother or a bottle, but for the sake of saving time, a bag feeder can be used. The cow’s vaccinations will determine the kinds of antibodies and immunity her colostrum provides the calf. Your veterinarian can make recommendations as to what vaccines should be given and when.

An injection of Vitamin E/Selenium will help prevent White Muscle disease (a disease that causes weak muscles including the heart muscle of calves). Our area is known for being low in Selenium; therefore, it is a good idea to give the calf a shot of Vitamin E and Selenium at birth as well as supplementing the cows ahead of time with a mineral tub or injectable Vitamin E/Selenium.

Vitamin E and Selenium can go out of date, making them ineective. Always check that the supplement or mineral tub is not stale dated.

Celebrating

Keeping the environment where the calf is born and raised, dry and clean will decrease the chances of it getting scours, umbilical infections (naval ill), etc. The practice of dipping the naval with an iodine solution is no longer recommended, because it can cause the cow to overzealously lick at the calf’s naval leading to trauma or even herniation. If a clean environment is not feasible, occasionally, an antibiotic may be recommended by the veterinarian to help treat naval ill. An infected naval can lead to septicemia (infection of the blood stream) which in turn can cause severe, permanent arthritis, meningitis, and other problems. Whenever possible a clean environment is a big key to success for the newborn calf.

Dehorning paste now will prevent unwanted horns later. Calf castrations with bands are an option. If this is done now; however, it is a really good idea to put an implant in the calf’s ear to replace the natural testosterone and encourage better growth rates. Tagging the calf now will help to identify the cow it belongs to, and helps to keep track of the calf. If calves are tagged, it is easier to identify if one has become ill or has gone missing. Creep feed will help calves grow faster. It can also provide a way to mass medicate calves to prevent coccidiosis scours. Occasionally producers will put out diatomaceous earth for calves. It does not actually have an active ingredient to prevent scours; however, it gives the calves something clean to lick rather than the ground which often has manure contaminating it. With cattle prices rising, keeping the newborn calf alive and thriving will certainly help with the bottom line. A good/healthy start for calves will help them grow to their full potential.

Imagine for a moment that you are a farmer who has decided to ‘diversify’. What idea would you move to first? What possibility would sound like a good idea? What would that look like to you?

There are quite likely an endless array of answers to that question.

But, when Kevin and Janet Czerwonka heard the call to diversify, his was a very matter-of-fact response.

“They said that farmers should ‘diversify’...and I thought ‘buffalo’,” Kevin says with a chuckle. “We had farmed south of Candiac, but we moved to this farm in 1991. We got into buffalo a couple of years later.”

Kevin says that the decision immediately yielded positive results. “We had a good calf crop and did well with them that first year.”

But, it quickly became apparent that the market for buffalo was vulnerable to the same circumstances that often cause volatility in conventional livestock markets.

“After that first year, the ‘BSE Crisis’ hit the cattle market. Suddenly, there was no market for buffalo either,” remembers Kevin. “It was about five years ago that we saw the market start to smarten up.

And now, it’s just gone completely off the wall...it’s unbelievable! Live weight calves right now are selling for twice as much as they were a few years ago.”

While there is no guarantee that the favorable market conditions will continue, Kevin points out that there is a strong demand for bison meat and related products in the United States.

“I was talking to the fellow in Colorado that I ship my buffalo to. He tells me that he can’t get enough animals to meet the demand. We actually toured his operation once. The day we were there, he had 63,000 lbs. of ground bison meat that was on its way to a major retailer. He’s told me that he even has pet stores contacting him. There’s a market for various bison products that people want for their pets as well.”

Kevin notes that while the market for buffalo can be just as ‘wild a ride’ as the conventional cattle market...buffalo are actually much less labour intensive to raise.

“People sometime think that buffalo are harder to handle than cattle. But, if you have a good set-up... that isn’t really true. For example, calving generally goes very well with buffalo. We VERY seldom lose a calf. The cows rarely have any calving problems... the calves are actually quite small when they’re born. So, we basically let nature take its course.”

So, if they were faced with the call to diversify now...would the couple still choose Buffalo?

“Oh, if I was just starting out right now, I’d certainly get into buffalo again. Granted, right now it would cost a person some money to get into it. But, I think they’d find it was worth it. You never can be guaranteed anything with livestock of any kind.

But, the market for buffalo is good right now...and it looks like it’s going to stay that way for a while yet!”

Forages as a tool to rescue saline and erodible soils Nadia Mori, PAg, Regional Forage Specialist Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture

Protecting soil health and increasing crop production can go hand in hand. Perennial forages are not just a good source of livestock feed, they are also an invaluable tool in stabilizing saline soils and soils at risk of erosion.

Perennial forages can reduce soil salinity. It’s not magic, just science. Salinity is caused by excessive evaporation of water containing dissolved salts. When the water evaporates at the soil surface, the salt crystals are left behind and can increase soil salinity over time. Salt-tolerant forages help lower the water table and reduce the amount of salt crystals deposited on the soil surface. Alfalfa in particular is a thirsty forage legume, and its taproot can access moisture deep in the soil. So long as salt concentrations are low enough that seedlings can be established, alfalfa is a great legume to include in forage mixtures for saline areas.

Perennial forages are overall great soil builders. The extensive root systems of forage grasses can access nutrients deep in the soil layers beyond the reach of annual crops. As roots die and are replaced, they leave behind fine soil channels which increase soil aeration and water infiltration, essentially giving the soil a sponge-like absorptive quality. The year-round vegetative cover provided by forages holds the soil in place, captures snow and slows spring runoff. Any soil at risk of erosion can benefit from perennial forage cover.

The Farm Stewardship program, funded under the federal-provincial territorial Growing Forward 2 initiative, helps producers protect high-risk erodible and saline soils through the establishment of perennial forages. This Best Management Practice (BMP) is offered as a rebate, meaning that, after the forage establishment work has been completed, cost-share funding is provided to qualifying applicants. Because certain restrictions apply, it is best to discuss the project with a Regional Forage Specialist prior to purchasing any forage seed. Forage seed should

be ordered early, as certain forage varieties can sell out. If you plan on taking advantage of this BMP funding, 2017 is the year to do so. Rebate applications have to be submitted by January 31, 2018, which only leaves the 2017 growing season to get those seeds in the ground.
