Tianna Kennett grapples her way to gold

Manor native Tianna Kennett (pictured, centre) earned her place at the top of the podium at The Canadian Junior and Senior National Wrestling Championships March 24-26 in St. Catherines, Ontario. Kennett grappled her way to a gold medal in the 59 kg weight class. Her win qualifies Kennett to compete in the Pan-American United World Wrestling Championship in Lima, Peru in June, as well as the Junior World Championships in Finland in August.

The University of Calgary student also earned the opportunity to be part of wrestling’s Canadian National team for another season.

As of April 1, residents can return ‘ready-to-serve’ milk containers to any of SARCAN’s 72 depots to receive a refund of the deposit paid at the point of purchase.

“SARCAN does a great job of running the beverage container recycling program, and through their efforts more than 80 per cent of containers are returned,” Moe said. “We have a great partnership with SARCAN and we are pleased to add milk containers to this important program.”

The new refundable deposits for milk containers are: • $0.10 for plastic milk containers, paper milk cartons or tetra boxes, between one and 999 ml. $0.25 for plastic milk containers, paper milk cartons or tetra boxes, one litre or more.

“Saskatchewan dairy farmers are proud stewards of the environment, and support this program that encourages the recycling of dairy containers in all areas of the province,” SaskMilk Chair Melvin Foth said.

SARCAN will accept fluid beverage containers including milk, buttermilk, cream, fluid coffee creamers, lactose-free milk products and drinkable yogurt. It will not accept containers from concentrates such as frozen juice mixes, infant formula, meal replacements, non-fluid coffee additives, pre-whipped whipping cream, evaporated milk or condensed milk. SARCAN will only accept milk containers with best before dates after April 1, 2017.

An environment handling fee of $0.03 for paper and aseptic/tetra cartons, $0.06 for plastic containers, and $0.07 for glass containers will apply to milk containers at the point of purchase. Environmental handling charges cover the environmental cost of collecting, consolidating and recycling milk containers, and are non-refundable Residents can begin recycling eligible milk containers immediately at any SARCAN depot.

The Redvers and District Music Festival hosted their Competition Awards Program on Monday, April 10, at the United Church.

The weeks prior saw a great showcase of local talent from across the Southeast, while the Competition Awards Program hosted some of these winning performances. The range of talent and hard work was vast as they performed; their hard work and dedication showing through.

“The Redvers and District Music Festival wishes to thank all its committees and volunteers for their time and hard work,” writes the Redvers and District Music Festival. “Thank you also to the performers, the teachers and accompanists, the parents, the donors of awards and scholarships, the sponsors of ads, the patrons of the festival, and the members of the audience. We value and appreciate your contribution to making the festival a success, and we look forward to your continued support.”

Although celebrating the success of the 2017 showcase, it is imperative the Redvers and District Music Festival find a President and Vice-President moving forward. If these positions are not filled, the festival will not be held next year.

- Games to play with your baby (0-6 months)

Even though your baby is very young, there are many opportunities for play!

Here is a list of just a few ways to enjoy your time with your baby: • Making objects and people disappear and reappear, with games such as Peek-A-Boo, is sure to delight your baby! Try different variations.

• Toys that make noise are fun for your little one. Being able to shake something and have an immediate response (noise)

encourages your baby to experiment with objects.

• Using your hand to “act out” games and verses will help your baby pay attention to the rhythm of words. As baby gets older, baby can imitate the actions.

Some favourites are “Hickory, dickory, dock, the mouse ran up the clock,” “Eensy, weensy spider,” and “I’m a Little Teapot.”

• Rocking and bouncing games can encourage your baby to learn about music and rhythm and about

their own body. These can be played on your lap or on the floor as your baby gets older.

An example would be “Ride-a-Horse” while you gently bounce baby on your lap. Your baby may want to stand up and bounce too. Make sure that your baby is enjoying the game – don’t force it.

• Objects with different textures are fun for your baby to feel, such as textured fabric or different types of paper, like corrugated cardboard – under your supervision, of course.

Shayna Nicolay: Saskatchewan Changemaker Lynne Bell

In honour of her community service, Carlyle’s Shayna Nicolay was named “Saskatchewan Changemaker” at WE Day March 18 in Saskatoon. Nicolay also received one of the RBC Foundation’s #Make150Count grants, but the 17-year-old says that performing 300 hours of volunteer work wasn’t nearly as challenging as appearing on the SaskTel Centre stage in front of 15,000 of her peers in recognition of the honours.

“It was really scary,” she laughs. “I just came on stage in my regular clothes and about a half an hour before, they touched up my hair and makeup for the camera.”

“But WE Day was also really motivating,” adds Nicolay, a grade 12 student at Gordon F. Kells High School. “They do a really good job of pumping you up for the WE Day broadcast-especially during the commercial breaks. There was even a WE Day dance.”

Saskatchewan’s WE Day event was part of a larger initiative which is meant to encourage and inspire young people to make positive change-locally, nationally and globally. WE Day Charity was founded in 1995 by Canadian Craig Kielburger. Since 2007, participants have raised over $45 million which has aided over 1,000 charities.

Due to the recognition she earned, Nicolay-along with the CFY Girls Group were seated in the front row of the SaskTel Centre for WE Day and were invited to a pre-WE Day celebration the night before the main event.

“At the ‘Evening of Inspiration,’ we met Miss Universe Saskatchewan, Siera Bearchell,” says Nicolay.

“There were so many inpsiring people there, but she was someone we all really connected with- and we invited her to come to Carlyle to speak.”

“Siera talked about body image and that’s something we’re focusing on this year in Girls Group. Her message really resonated. Another person was the singer Tyler Shaw. He was one of the people who presented me with the award. He was nice, really humble and a great singer.”

“I had no idea that this would happen,” says Nicolay. “For me, this all started with Girls Group. I started in October of grade 11. I started mentoring younger girls there and it grew from that.”

In addition to acting as a voluntary mentor with the CFY’s Girls Group, Nicolay was a regular assistant at Cornerstone Family and Youth’s after-school art classes at the Carlyle Library and will be running her own all-day camp for elementary school kids as a special credit project. “ Jenn and I taught art classes to between 10 to 20 kids from grades one to six at the CFY art classes,” says Nicolay. “My mom Margaret (Nicolay) has an in-home daycare, so I kind of grew up with kids in the house. Working with them was really rewarding and it was also really interesting to expose them to art and watch them grow creatively.” “ It was really cool to see them progress in different things. Not just creatively, but socially.”

“With the camp I’ll run, it will be a day-long special project that I’m doing with the high school. In the morning, they’ll be about 25 younger kids and in the afternoon, 25 older kids in two separate sessions,” explains Nicolay.

“We’ll focus on the importance of a healthy mind and body, along with with self-confidence and a healthy self-image, which is similar to some of the things I do as a mentor with Girls Group.”

“Right now, people are trying harder to find solutions to problems,” says Nicolay. “People are starting to talk about problems more and more openly and that hopefully, will lead to solutions.”

Nicolay is also chair of Gordon F. Kells High School’s student leadership team and a member of the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance. She is also a member of the school’s Senior Drama Club and works part-time.

“They’re really rewarding responsibilites and as far as WE Day, I only knew about a week ahead,” says Nicolay. “ I got an email from the WE Day people that I was nominated. I texted (CFY coordinator) Jenn Sedor and she said: ‘I may have nominated you.’”

“I want to thank Jenn (Sedor) for all of the opportunities she gives me,” says Nicolay. “And my family’s been so supportive throughout everything.”

Sedor says Nicolay’s potential as a positive changemaker was evident even before she became a Girls Group mentor.

“Shayna was on the high school’s student leadership team before she joined the CFY Girls Group,” says Sedor. “But when she joined Girls Group, she just took off with it. She was always doing something extra and contributing ideas. Regarding her upcoming day camp, she even wrote and submitted the application herself.”

“She’s very socially-conscious for someone so young,” says Sedor. “And the ‘Saskatchewan Changemaker’ award is definitely a recognition of what a special person she is, as well as how hard she’s worked on behalf of others.”

“She’s very caring with the younger girls she mentors,” continues Sedor. “Young girls today are dealing with so many problems, pressures and stresses. Shay-

Nicolay-who will be studying journalism this fall at Toronto’s Ryerson University- says: “I definitely try to be a positive person and I try too look at things from the positive side. I didn’t volunteer to receive an award, but being honoured like this kind of meant that people were recognizing what I was doing and that it really was making a difference.”

“I just want to empower youth and let them know they can make a difference.”

Redvers Ag Ex draws crowd Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Redvers Ag Ex Tradeshow hosted a successful bi-annual gathering on Tuesday, April 11, where 92 exhibitors and approximately 500 people attended.

The event, which began in 1975, was first held by Blain Hjertaas – current Chairperson – in which only 10 exhibitors attended.

The show has since grown averaging 100 exhibitors now and has grown to a committee of

eight.

Exhibitors this year included various innovative crop technologies, environmental information, farm equipment and auto dealers, insurance companies, as well as a variety of home leisure and lifestyle vendors. Added attractions included the SGI Rollover Simulator, agriculture in the classroom, a petting zoo, bouncy house, face painting, and 4H cattle display.

“The Alida 4H Beef and Redvers Roughriders helped set up and will help take everything down,” Ann Wiszniak explained. “The Moose Mountain Air Cadets are also helping serve lunch today; we always have great volunteers.”

“It’s been a really good day,” Wiszniak added. “We have exhibitors that attend from Regina to Brandon and everywhere in between; often they’re localized businesses, but reps from further away make the effort to come.”

The event, which had been held in June, was switched back to April as a way to better cater to the agricultural community who has yet to get into the fields.

Overall the event was a great success drawing attendees from across Southeast Saskatchewan to see what’s new in the world of upcoming agricultural trends.

Not only was the curling rink and hockey rink in Redvers filled with exhibitors, some brought along the newest in technology for farmers to inspect.

The Southeast Research Farm was present to talk about their work; but one of the fun features at their booth was for kids to plant beans and corn to take home and grow in their garden; a perfect natural bird feeder.

Weekly RCMP report

The Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to several calls between Thursday, April 6 and Thursday, April 13.

911 calls Three 911 calls were made during this period. Staff Sgt. Darren Simons reminds members of the public that 911 is for “emergencies only. We appreciate any calls we receive from the public, but we ask that for non-emergency matters that they call us at the detachment or at 310-RCMP.” False alarms Members dealt with three false alarm files from the detachment area.

Alcohol-related offences An intoxicated male was arrested and lodged in cells until sober.

Assistance Carlyle RCMP assisted the Regina Police Service by serving a warrant, which resulted in an individual’s arrest.

RCMP assisted the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice by serving subpoenas in the detachment area.

Members are currently assisting animal protection in the Kisbey area.

RCMP responded to a report from the Kisbey area in which an indivual was walking on a road. The caller was concerned about the safety of this person.

Police are preparing to assist with a triathalon which will be held at Kenosee Lake this summer.

Assault An assault which took place in the Carlyle area resulted in an individual being charged with assault, breach of release conditions and mischief.

In Redvers, members responded to the report of an assault involving two youths who were too young to be dealt with by RCMP. However, police spoke to both the youths and their parents.

Drug possession RCMP are currently conducting an investigation in Carlyle regarding the possession of illegal drugs.

Failure to comply with release conditions An individual from the Wawota area failed to comply with the conditions of their release.

Fire RCMP assisted at a fire in the Carlyle area.

One person was trans-

ported to hospital with burns.

Firearms An individual in the detachment area was found to have improperly stored a firearm.

Harassment RCMP responded to a report about an individual in the Carlyle area who was concerned about comments made on Facebook.

Members responded to a report of harassing communications from the Kisbey area.

Mischief RCMP responded to a report of an intoxicated male who refused to leave a residence in the Carlyle area. He was lodged in cells until sober.

Members are investigating a report of mischief at the Manor Library.

Youths and their parents were spoken to by RCMP regarding non-property damage mischief in Carlyle.

Sexual assault A sexual assault which occurred in the Kisbey area resulted in an individual being charged.

RCMP are investigating a sexual assault which was reported in the Carlyle area.

Traffic violations/collisions RCMP responded to a single-vehicle rollover south of Carlyle. Charges will be forthcoming.

At a traffic stop at Kenosee Lake, an individual was charged with having liquor in their vehicle, driving without a valid driver’s licence. This motorist also received inspection tickets.

A rollover accident in the Carlyle area is currently under investigation by RCMP. It is thought that the driver lost control on a gravel road.

In the Kenosee Lake area, RCMP are investigating a case of a driver stopping their vehicle in an attempt to cause other vehicles to collide with it. Members made patrols, but the vehicle has not yet been located.

An individual was arrested for driving while disqualified and will appear in court.

Two individuals were charged with driving without a valid drivers licence.

RCMP are investigating a report of a damaged vehicle.

Police are investigating six incidences of driving without vehicle insurance in the detachment area. The fine for this offence is $580.

Members issued several tickets during this time, including fines for speeding, not wearing seatbelts, license plate issues and

various other inspection tickets.

Staff Sgt. Darren Simons says that of late, RCMP have encountered two motorists driving vehicles with obstructed windshields. “If you have a chip in your windshield, get it fixed,” he says. “It’s cheaper than a new windshield and a windshield that is undamaged is integral to vehicle safety in two respects. First, visibility is key when driving.

And during a rollover or collision, a cracked windshield is an added safety issue.”

Uttering threats Members are investigating a report of uttering threats in the Kisbey area.

In the Arcola area, RCMP responded to a report of uttering

threats. However, the individuals involved are not cooperating with police.

Threats which allegedly originated in the Manor area appear to be unfounded.

Holiday traditions

I was kindly invited out for Easter supper this past weekend and being that I was raised you can’t go empty handed I offered to make coleslaw, then because of my family traditions I decided to make shrimp aspic salad as well.

Now it took me about 18 years, eating my one table spoon twice Kelly Running a year – at Easter and Christmas Observer Staff – to get used to shrimp aspic, the flavours and the textures, but I’ve grown to love it over time.

People tend to turn their nose up at it when you tell them it’s base is lemon jello and tomato juice, so instantly it sounds odd. Then there’s green olives, onions, cucumbers, and celery in there… and somehow, it is absolutely delicious with turkey.

It’s a recipe that my granny always made and my mom continues to make because my dad absolutely loves it, and everyone else in the family has developed a taste for it now too. But, headed off to this family’s house for supper I wasn’t sure what their reactions would be. One disliked it, but decided it wasn’t as bad as it sounds, another one liked the taste but didn’t care for the texture – although she did have seconds, and the other three all ate it.

For one person, however, I brought up some memories as it was once her dad’s favourite salad.

I think it was one of those recipes that people once made when jello salads were the trendy thing to make. A “grandma” or “granny” salad as one of the dinner goers said.

So, that was kind of fun, sharing something that we always eat, which isn’t too popular and people invited to the Running household typically give it a funny look although they’ll try it, but finding out it was something that their family used to have as well was a nice surprise.

It’s always kind of fun learning about other people’s traditions and what they do for their holidays.

I remember spending Christmas in Australia and although here turkey is the must have, there we enjoyed jumbo prawns for our Christmas dinner.

Although cooking a turkey with all the stuffing and extras would have warmed the house a little bit too much considering their Christmas is actually held during their summer, since their seasons are the inverse of ours being that they’re in the southern hemisphere.

Take care of that... it could spoil Check the vegetable crisper, pop the lid on a container of berries, or open the milk carton and you quickly know if what is inside has spoiled. Sometimes the aroma is the tell-tale sign and sometimes it’s the colour or texture that lets you know.

There’s another kind of spoiling that some believe can take place: the spoiling of children. It’s a hot topic for parents, or grandShelley Luedtke parents, or people that don’t have children--in other words anyone and everyone has an opinion on what spoils a child and what outcomes could result.

Being spoiled evokes ideas of being indulged, selfcentered and demanding. Psychologists caution casual observers to not be so quick to assume a child is spoiled when confronted by difficult behaviour since there could be other factors at work. Nonetheless, the term is often applied to describe a child who is overly indulged and manipulative, and who has no sense of gratitude for what they have.

Lest we look down our noses at the ‘spoiled children’ or ‘entitled millennials’ in our midst, perhaps we need to take a second look. To end up spoiled-someone had to do the spoiling. To lived entitled-someone must have made them feel that they were inherently deserving of privilege or special treatment.

Privilege. Special treatment.

Well, if that’s the case it starts with the person looking back at me in the mirror, because when it comes to privilege I represent a percentage of the world at the top of the list.

Canadian Labour Law says I am entitled to a vacation.The Canadian Elections Act says I am entitled to vote. A search engine on one Government of Canada website came up with 20, 600 occurrences of the word entitled. In addition, we have protections under the law, rights in regard to freedoms, and a

host of civil liberties. Most of these we likely don’t think too much about since they are so entrenched in how we live. There is an uproar when any of these are violated--yet rarely an expression of gratitude as they are lived out each day. Hmmm, kind of like the “spoiled child” who is unaware of how different their life is from most.

So what is it we should feel entitled to? Clean water? Why us, and not the 783 million people who don’t. Health care? Why us, and not the 56% of people living in rural areas worldwide who have no access to care. Comfortable home and full refrigerators? Why us, and not the 1.3 billion people in the world people who live on less than $1.25 a day; or the 900,000 Canadians who need assistance from food banks each month. By these standards, I am spoiled. I have so much that others simply don’t, and there is no easy answer to why us and not others.

I happen to have been born and continue to live somewhere that makes these things somewhat of a given, and not an extraordinary luxury. Therein lies the issue--thinking these things are a given…or will always be there. Because there is no guarantee that this will always be true. So I best be cautious with how I use water; I need to show gratitude for the x-rays, ultrasounds and blood work I can get; and I should be mindful of what I already have before I go purchase more.

If I live like I am entitled I put it at risk, because I am neglecting to place value on it. Entitlement can fester inside us, causing a rot to grow, and that attitude leads to total spoilage. It’s root? Ingratitude and selfishness.

The key to keeping perspective is remembering that if we are the beneficiaries of so much, we need to be the stewards of it all. What we value we will cherish--and treat with care. Like anything potentially perishable it requires even closer attention and greater vigilance, because if we don’t--it is more than our attitudes that risk spoiling.

That’s my outlook.

In our own sweet time

We’ve reached those years when we get to call the shots because our time is our own. Personally speaking, I’m officially retired and conventional wisdom has it that retired people have nothing Jocelyn Hainsworth but free time. I don’t think I would go quite that far as there aren’t too many days that I sit around watching the grass grow, but I do enjoy the freedom of planning my own days. The Farmer isn’t exactly retired but the job he has is seasonal and sporadic. When he’s working it’s big projects for long hours but when he’s home he has down time too.

Because of this we seem to be under the impression that we have all the time in the world to plan stuff we want to do, as well as all the energy we ever had to get it done. This spring I’ve begun to question this.

There are people out there who are just Johnnyon-the-Spot. They see something that needs done and they are on it immediately. That would not be us. We are more into lengthy considerations and long term planning.

Take this spring’s big project for example: the first few shingles on the shop roof to let go years ago, but no action was taken. Each year it got a little worse and eventually the obvious was accepted; we needed to do something about it.

More time passed before we reached the stage where it was decided that the shingles would be replaced by metal roofing.

After another summer of pondering the next step the pricing-it-out stage was reached and I was handed some colour samples to choose from. We ordered it last summer. It arrived in the autumn.

We actually hauled it home around the time of the first snow fall. Eventually it was placed inside the shop and we waited for spring. The project finally officially kicked off when he started stripping shingles off last week.

Not that I’m pointing any fingers of shame for this slow-pokey-ness though, my projects tend to be long term as well.

For example, I have this rock garden built into the side of a hill. It’s very pretty, but as gardens go – it’s also very high maintenance. It’s not like a person can get in there with a tiller because of the rocks ... and the steep slope ... and the perennials growing throughout. For years the plastic edging has been either too high and the lawn mower catches it, or too low and the grass grows right over it, but it wasn’t until early last summer that I decided to tear out the old edging and lay in landscape cloth and a stone border. I even started ripping out the edging last fall: it was still just half done when the snow melted this spring. And to show further commitment I began a nice little collection of suitable stones last June and then

proceeded to weed around them for the rest of the season.

This spring dawned and I got the itch to go out and play in the dirt. There were the stones and the loose edging waiting for me. All full of fresh new 2017 garden energy I made the momentous decision that this would be the year of the rock border and before I could back out I commenced digging the trench and fetching more stones and crawling along on the ground fitting them into place. I’ve been at it for two days. I’m getting about 12 feet done a day. At this rate, if I don’t die of aching muscles, I’ll be done by May. I hope I can find enough stones – who knew that this garden was so big?

So there we are – working away at each our own projects in the yard, striving for improvements we can be proud of, putting in a satisfying day’s work.

Sometimes we make it all the way to 5:00.

When the alarm clock went off this morning we both gave getting out of bed a first try: it was not a success. It occurred to me that at sixty-something there seems to be a longer period of getting back into summer job shape. There always is that achybreaky adjustment from winter-couch-potato mode to getting-summer-stuff-done mode, but this spring it seems to be taking forever. Right now I feel we will be lucky to survive the transition.

And also, maybe retired people actually NEED all the time in the world to get things done, whether they have it or not.

Making muttins I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter last weekend with family and friends! We spent the weekend FINISHING the upstairs renovations. That’s right, you heard me. We finished the upstairs! I can’t believe it is Krystyn Gillies finally finished, but our almost two years of hard work finally paid off! There are a few little things that need to be finished before winter next year heat wise, but everything is in, cleaned and furniture has made the move!

The toddler has no idea what is coming her way, but she loves it up there. Here is hoping everything transitions smoothly and having a baby sleep in the dining room will be a thing of the past! My story this week, of course, involved the toddler being her mischievous self. Let me fill you in on a little bit of back story so things back sense.

I have an auto-immune disease called Celiac Disease, so I cannot ingest or digest gluten in any way, shape or form. It is believed to be a genetic disease, meaning there is a very good chance the toddler has it too. Our household is gluten free because cross contamination is a very real thing that could cause sickness for me. Anyway, finding gluten free food that is fully nutritious and made of real ingredients is tricky.

When you take gluten out of things, chances are, the food doesn’t taste like much, so companies add sugar and other things to make the food taste better.

With that in mind, I make A LOT of our food from scratch so I have a better understanding of what we are eating. I want as many whole foods as possible and I would like to limit the added sugar as well.

Anyway! I make a lot of muffins these days. The toddler loves them and it is a quick and easy snack or breakfast on the run. I have to make a couple dozen every week or so to keep up, so the mixer is almost always in use. The toddler loves to help me make “muttins” as she calls them, sitting on the counter and dumping all the dry ingredients into the mixing bow.

She can turn the mixer on and off herself, which has mostly resulted in very expensive flour being poofed all over my kitchen. We pretty much know the recipes by heart, so I always bring out most of everything I need ahead of time so I can just toss it in and mix.

So, a couple of weeks ago, as I was working in my office, doing tax preparations, I knew she was playing in the kitchen. I guess I must have really been into my work because I didn’t hear her for a few minutes until I heard, “uh oh, mess!” That was very concerning to me, so I yelled out to her to ask her what she was doing.

She kept saying the same word over and over again,

but it wasn’t clear enough for me to hear. I asked her politely to use her words more clearly and she said this. “Eggs, chicken… doodle doo!” Did she just say eggs? It clicked in my mind and I instantly pushed back from the desk and took off to the kitchen. She met me in the dining room with an egg shell.

Uh oh. Sometimes when we collect the chicken eggs, we leave them in the pail to be washed beside the sink. I asked her where the rest of the egg was and she said “Muttins!” Apparently, the toddler pushed a chair up to the counter, saw the eggs and decided it was time to make “muttins” whether mommy was there to help or not.

I then spent five solid minutes playing where did the toddler put the rest of the egg, when it clicked

in my mind that if she is making muffins, she would be using the mixer. Sure enough, she had pulled the bowl attachment off the drying mat, flipped it over and cracked an egg inside. She mostly hit the bowl, as there was a little bit of egg on the floor in front of the counter as well.

I had to explain several times that making “muttins”, was a job for MOMMY and the toddler both. No more unsupervised baking in the kitchen.

I wish putting the eggs in the cartons in the fridge would help, but I assure you, she can get what ever she wants out of the fridge as well. Thank goodness it is warming up outside; hopefully we can use our extra energy out there instead of in the kitchen. “Muttin” anyone?

Hitting marvel Ichiro still amazing at 43

By Bruce Penton He’s Japanese, so he hasn’t received the adulation in the United States that an American might, but 43-year-old Ichiro Suzuki — just Ichiro, thank you very much — is one of the most amazing baseball players of all time.

With not a single apology to Pete Rose, Ichiro is professional baseball’s hit king, compiling more than 4,300 in a career that started in Japan, where he dominated that country’s top pro leagues, and then in the United

States, where he arrived in the year 2001 as a 27-year-old rookie and took 16 seasons to accumulate 3,000 hits in North America.

And now, at an age when a rocking chair, not a major league batter’s box, would be more appropriate, Ichiro continues to play, continues to hit, continues to amaze.

Now in his second season with the Miami Marlins, for whom he played 143 games last year, Ichiro says he might play until he’s 50.

“I’m not joking when I say it,” Ichiro told the Miami Herald. He hasn’t taken a vacation in 10 or 12 years, saying the last time he took one it disrupted his workout routine. He lives to play baseball, using his

To All Community Organizations: The Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Grant Program is again available to community organizations.

The purpose of the program is to provide funds to volunteer organizations that provide programs and services in sport, culture and recreation. Funds are provided through the Town of Carlyle to maintain, improve and expand on programs and opportunities for people of all ages to derive the benefits from involvement in sport, culture and recreation activities. For this reason, only those expenditures that can be directly related to programming will qualify for grant assistance.

The Town of Carlyle is now accepting applications for assistance under the Community Grant Program. Wawota Lions inaugural live auction hockey draft sparks interest Kelly Running Observer Staff

What’s it like to create the perfect team? As a General Manager, you’ve got decisions to make when it comes to playoff hockey drafts. With the Wawota Lions no longer able to host their annual quad derby, the service group had to look at finding a new fundraiser which would aid the Lions in bettering their community and to continue funding projects in Wawota.

The plan was formed by Joel Carpenter: “It’s a live auction style hockey draft. So, we’re auctioning off the top 120 players going into playoffs with a max of 30 teams. It was something we used to do at Precision Ag, where I work, but they weren’t doing it this year and they decided to give it to the Wawota Lions to use as a fundraiser.”

“The Lions lost the quad derby and we needed a new fundraiser to continue doing community projects here; and it’s Canada, everybody loves hockey.”

With 17 preregistered teams, Carpenter was hopeful of having at least 20 for the first year. In the end, although the Lions didn’t reach 30 teams in the pool, they did take in 25 total, which Carpenter was very pleased with.

gave each team 1,000 points to work with. From there Rhett Parks – auctioneer – took over. With the 1,000 points, team captains bid on the top 120 players headed into playoffs.

They were also given a goalie list and would take one goalie on their team as well. Players earn points through goals and assists, while goalies earn points through wins and shutouts.

The draft saw Parks auction off the top 120 goal scorers from the regular season starting with Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers.

Each time someone was up for auction, they were listed at the front on a slide with a variety of information to help individuals make their decisions.

Every 10 spots a goalie was up for picks and once everyone used their 1,000 points the team captains could round out their 10-player roster with players that hadn’t been bought.

Additionally, a Calcutta was held with 10 teams being able to be bid on to be the winning team, losing team, loser to the winner, and loser to the loser.

A cash payout will take place for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd; while first place will also take home bragging rights and their team name will be etched into a miniature Stanley Cup trophy, which will sit on their table next year at the event.

The group garnered front-row seats, backstage passes and access to pre-We Day activities, thanks to member Shayna Nicolay’s status as We Day’s ‘Saskatchewan Changemaker.’ “WE Day was a wonderful event and also an encouraging one for the girls,” says the CFY’s Jenn Sedor. “They don’t do the things they do to receive recognition, though. CFY Coordinator Jenn Sedor says that as the Girls Group’s year comes to a close, the “fun and philanthropy” isn’t over yet. “The next thing the community can expect from us are random acts of kindness and thank you notes to strangers. National Student Leadership Conference Four members of our Student Leadership Team are fundraising to go to the National Student Leadership Conference in Waterloo, Ontario, this fall. They will be hosting a Paint Night on Monday, May 1st in the art room. The first session at 4:00 will be for youth, while the second session at 6:30 is for adults. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased in advance from Brittany Smoliak, Makenna Morrison, Gracie Schutz, or Sydney Flynn. They will also be hosting a Community BBQ on GFK’s front lawn on Friday, May 5th from noon until 1 pm. Hamburgers, hotdogs, cookies, and drinks will be for sale and all proceeds will go to their trip to Waterloo.

The SLT will be hosting a tropical-themed dance on Friday, April 28th. Doors open at 7:30.

Early spring doesn’t necessarily mean early planting

By Calvin Daniels It might be just what the doctor ordered for Prairies farmers this year, an early dose of spring weather.

After a fall harvest season in 2016 which was marred by day after day of bad weather, pushing harvest into November for many, and even then leaving thousands of acres to winter in the field, an early start this year was a near must.

Many farmers face the unenviable task of trying to finish last year’s harvest, and then to get those acres into some shape for planting this year, otherwise long held crop rotations could be lost, or acres simply left to fallow.

While it is just past Easter, meaning just about anything weather wise is possible for another few weeks, so far things are looking good.

For most areas snow cover was not severe, and has already melted, causing little in the way of

run-off, a good thing as most areas went into winter with more than sufficient moisture.

That said, an inch of rain on a warm day would not be a bad thing to get the grass growing, and the soil starting to warm.

Conditions in the spring have to include warm soil otherwise seeds will not germinate quickly, and that impacts emergence, and potentially overall crop vitality if the seeds sit in the cold ground too long.

Producers of course want to get their crops in as early as is reasonable. Take in any cropping seminar or check research data, and early seeded crops, generally outperform those seeded later in the planting season.

This year getting some acres in early will be impossible because of the aforementioned crop in the field, but with the snow gone by Easter, the potential to handle this spring’s challenges are tilting a bit in the farmers’ favour.

What to grow when farmers do hit the fields will be a more difficult question.

South America is anticipating a huge soybean crop, so a price pop in that market is unlikely, and that puts pressure on all vegetable oils, including canola, in terms of price increase potential.

Certainly oilseed crops have been the strength in the crop rotation the last few years, with China a steady buyer, but that demand is not assured moving forward.

Cereal grain carryout on a worldwide basis has climbed in each of the last five-years, which is not exactly an indicator of an area where process will rally higher.

At least with the early start we seem to be in for, farmers have as many options as possible, as they try to maximize returns in a year of some market uncertainty.

Championing equality for all Canadians DOUGLAS WILSON (1950-1992)

===================================================== In 1975, Douglas Wilson was a graduate student in the College of Education at the University of Saskatchewan. Recently out of the closet, he wanted to form an on-campus gay association and placed an ad in the student paper to recruit members. The university’s Dean of Education was appalled by the idea and rapidly revoked Wilson’s eligibility to supervise practice teachers. When news of this got around, students, staff and teachers at the university elected to fight the decision. The story was picked up by the media and gained national attention, thereby bringing to light the seldom-discussed issue of gay rights. While the courts ultimately ruled in favour of the university, Wilson refused to skulk back into the closet. Instead, he dedicated the rest of his life to human rights activism, believing that every individual deserved to be treated with the same respect regardless of race, gender, religion or sexual orientation.

Wilson got involved in a number of initiatives that supported gay and lesbian causes. He helped form the Saskatchewan Gay Coalition, served as fourth president of the Gay Community Centre of Saskatoon, and was instrumental in creating Metamorphosis, a Doug Wilson on the cover of the December festival celebrating diversity and inclusion in the Prairies. He also 1975 issue of Body Politic. © University of Saskatchewan archives. established Stubblejumper Press, which published literary works penned by gay and lesbian authors from across Canada. Around this same period, Wilson was hired as the executive director of the Saskatchewan Association on Human Rights, an NGO that focused on defending the rights of marginalized individuals throughout the province.

In the mid-eighties, Wilson relocated to Toronto, where he took a position working for the Toronto Board of Education in its Race Relations and Equity Office. He also formed the Rites! collective, which published Rites: For Lesbian and Gay Liberation. Additionally, Wilson volunteered with the Federation of Toronto Tenants’ Association, the Friends of Downtown, AIDS Action Now! and Mission for Peace.

In 1988, Wilson became politically mobilized and was nominated as an NDP candidate for the Rosedale riding. He was the first openly gay candidate nominated by a major political party in Canada. However, in the midst of campaigning, Wilson was diagnosed with HIV and dropped out of the race. He spent the rest of his lifetime as an AIDS activist and was founding chair of the Canadian Network of Organizations of People Living With HIV/AIDS. He died of an AIDS-related illness in 1992.

Doug Wilson’s incredible legacy lives on through the Doug Wilson Award, which is given annually to University of Saskatchewan students who help advance the cause of LGBTQ rights on campus. The tireless activist made an impact on society that goes beyond any single cause, and his courageous fight played a crucial part in building the open, forward-thinking Canada that we share today.

CANADA’S GERMAN COMMUNITY German people have lived in Canada since the 18th century. The very first German settlement was established in the 1750s in Nova Scotia, and evidence of this early community survives to this day in the names of towns and churches along the province’s south shore.

The Little Deutsch Church in Halifax, founded in 1752, is the oldest surviving German church in Canada and has been a National Historic Site since 1997. Elsewhere, a smaller group of German settlers established communities along the St. Lawrence River during the 1760s. The American Revolution prompted further immigration, with German Loyalists fleeing to Canada in considerable numbers throughout the 1770s.

Waterloo County in Ontario was a hub for German immigrants from both the United States and Europe during the 1830s, before Western Canada took over as the destination of choice. German settlers in Manitoba were mainly Mennonites from Prussia, while those in British Columbia came by way of the U.S. during the Cariboo Gold Rush. By 1911, there were over 150,000 Germans spread out across virtually every province in Canada.

Things changed dramatically during the World Wars. Immigration slowed significantly, and German Canadians who had once been widely accepted were suddenly ostracized. Many were interned for being disloyal to Canada. As a result, numerous German Canadians elected to change their names and even deny their German heritage. Thankfully, the end of the Second World War brought an end to this trend.

From 1945 onwards, Germans once again came to Canada, this time in greater numbers. By 1994, the community reached 400,000 individuals. Today, there are over three million Canadians who claim full or partial German ancestry. Many towns still bear German names, and German is the mother tongue of 430,000 people across Canada. Prominent German Canadians include Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger; award-winning author Miriam Toews; architect Eberhard Zeidler; former Prime Minister John Diefenbaker; and NHL left winger Dany Heatley.

The lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) was chosen to become Alberta’s provincial arboreal emblem in 1984. Its wood was once used to make railway ties that connected Alberta to the eastern provinces.

Managing Your Money - The real way to build an emergency fund It’s an unsettling fact: most Canadians don’t have money put away for an unexpected event.

According to a 2015 survey by Pollara, a strategic insights firm, 44% of Canadians have less than $5,000 set aside for unexpected expenses, and a quarter of working Canadians are living paycheque to paycheque with no emergency cash at all.

If that sounds like you, don’t stress out because building an emergency fund is not an impossible task – here’s how to do it.

How much? So, how much should you have in your emergency fund? Ideally, your fund should equal three to six months of your take-home salary

but at the very least, you should save enough to cover your basic needs, like buying food and paying the household bills.

How to? An adequate emergency fund won’t happen overnight – build it steadily, progressively and as aggressively as your finances will allow by: • Determining how much you need in your emergency fund and how long it will take you to reach your goal based on a realistic monthly contribution.

• Authorize automatic monthly payments from your chequing and/or paycheque account to your emergency fund account.

• Trim unnecessary monthly bills by eating out

less often, by setting up a carpool or using public transportation, or by reducing household costs and putting that money into your fund.

• When you get a bonus or an unexpected tax refund, don’t blow it all on a vacation. Instead, put some into your emergency fund and perhaps into an RRSP, and, yes, set aside a few dollars for fun.

How not to? Even if you have a line of credit, you still need an emergency fund. Drawing on a line of credit increases your debt and whatever you buy with it will cost even more because of the interest you’ll pay. Plus, getting too comfortable with one kind of debt can snowball into other types – like credit card debt, which is extremely expensive.

That’s why it’s always better to pay for emergencies with cash on hand.

And don’t be tempted to use that emergency fund for a vacation or another impulse purchase.

Pause for Reflection

Tick, tick says the clock Tick tick says the clock Tick, says the clock, tick, tick, What you have to do, do quick So goes a Cameroon children’s song usually sung at the end of the school day.

I want to direct this article in part to the more than 2,000 Grade 12 students I taught over the years. You may feel that you are powerful, invincible. That you will live forever in this time… but I have seen some of you move on to your eternal kingdom. Others have struggled with illness and carry permanent marks of our fragile human condition.

I don’t want to scare anyone. I just want to share some good news that is often forgotten as we grow and leave home. If you can, go back to your childhood Christmases and remember the simple joy of Faith and love you experienced.

I recently spent time with my grandchildren, and as I put my young grandson to sleep I was inspired with a metaphor worth sharing with my readers, especially the younger ones.

God is like a Grandparent looking after us. He bends over us, patting us on the shoulder and whispering support. We may resist and arch our backs, and restlessly toss and turn, but God has patience.

He knows that eventually we will come around to a more prodigal attitude.

Here is where earthly grandparents come in. In the faith they coddle their children and grandchildren, praying for them, sacrificing for them. Sometimes our parents are called home early, but they continue to lean from heaven with support and intercessory power.

When I tuck my grandson in at night I know that I can out wait him and that eventually he will fall asleep. I pat him gently, often with a light touch to let him know I am still near. If necessary I pick him up and rock him again.

Tell me, does God not care more for us than an earthly parent? Though a mother forget her child, God will not abandon you (Isaiah 49:15). And we are blessed with family and community members who continue to pray for us, and will continue to support us even after God calls them home from their service.

Even as flawed humans we can embrace rebellious children and surround them with love. How much more does God embrace us and wait for us to come back to that relationship of love that we sometimes abandon.

As seniors we more readily realize that the clock is ticking. The life expectancy of Saskatchewan seniors is 77 for men and 82 for women. A pastor recently asked, “How many more Sundays does that give you? How many more weeks to be faithful and to grow in Grace?”

This question is not just for seniors. We all have an expiry date. We should have a “best before” date as well. The great news is that we can still get better.

“Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, the last of life, for which the first was made. Our times are in his hand who saith, ‘A whole I planned, youth shows but half; Trust God: See all, nor be afraid!’ ” (Browning “Rabbi Ben Ezra”) I conclude with these thoughts: You are never too old to set a new goal or dream a new dream. (C.S. Lewis) Those who love deeply never grow old; they may die of old age, but they die young. (Benjamin Franklin)

Living with integrity

By Linda Wegner Over a quarter century ago I resolved to systematically read through the Old Testament books of wisdom, as they are known. Logistically it’s simple: there are 150 chapters in Psalms and 31 chapters in Proverbs so by reading five Psalms and the appropriately dated chapter in Proverbs every day, I am able to read through each book once a month and 12 times a year.

Do I ever tire of the portions or feel I’ve mastered the contents? Not at all because I know there are always lessons to be learned or reinforced; the words of David and his son, Solomon, have never become stale to me. This past week, for example, the topic uppermost in my mind and heart has been”integrity”.

As always I begin with a dictionary definition so here goes: the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles, the state of being whole

and undivided. In looking for examples I found it interesting that one of the first I found was that of employers looking to hire new employees. In that article the general consensus was that integrity is considered a fundamental value in the process. (Of course, that has to work both ways for a successful working relationship.) The more I researched the topic the more I realized how complex and often risky it is to demonstrate high moral values in life and in work.

There is no area of life, business or politics where integrity is out of place. While it may be considered out of style, its foundations are strong and blessed by God; while it may be costly, its rewards are incalculable.

“He who walks with integrity walks securely, but he who perverts his ways will become known.”

(Proverbs 10:9) Another thing: Integrity begins with I. As in me. And in you. As in every individual.

The Cornerstone Theatre will present their annual dinner theatre production on April 28 – 30. This year they will perform a murder mystery farce, “While the Lights Were Out,” by Jack Sharkey. This year 15 people are performing in the play including: Colleen Easton, David Slykhuis, Bertha Isleifson, Lane Easton, Denise Singleton, Sandra Campbell, Debbie Sorensen, Matt Gesell, Don Carter, Heather Vermeersch, Bryanne Forcier, Monte McNaughton, Jesse Twietmeyer, Mel Gesell, and Candy Bye.

The Cornerstone Theatre is hosting their annual dinner theatre on Friday, April 28, and Saturday, April 29, along with just the play on Sunday, April 30.

The murder mystery farce, “While the Lights Were Out,” by Jack Sharkey is a classic whodunnit themed play with a twist.

Director, Dianne Twietmeyer, explained, “This is a different kind of comedy than we usually do. We typically have a million doors opening and closing, men dressed as women, and mistaken identities; but, this one isn’t like that.”

“We’re going to have to swear the audience to secrecy after they see it, part of the enjoyment of this particular play is attempting to figure out who did it. It’s set in Bermuda

Everyone on stage is a suspect. It’s a silly plot, yet quite intricate.”

“There’s a lot of over the top characters, especially the lead detective.”

Characters include an Alabama lady, a Frenchman, a fashion designer, a Jamaican maid, and a bumbling detective “who is totally incompetent and wouldn’t solve anything without his sergeant.”

Ultimately it’s a fun mystery, which will have the audience watching for clues; but, with the bumbling detective is it really a clue?

“The script we chose mainly because of the large cast; we wanted to get new people interested on stage and get them up there along with experienced ones.”

This year 15 people are involved in the play including: Colleen Easton, David Slykhuis, Bertha Isleifson, Lane Easton, Denise Singleton, Sandra Campbell, Debbie Sorensen, Matt Gesell, Don Carter, Heather Vermeersch, Bryanne Forcier, Monte McNaughton, Jesse Twietmeyer, Mel Gesell, and Candy Bye. Cornerstone first met on Feb. 22 to discuss the play and were

reading the script by Feb. 29.

“There were so many people interested that doing the casting was a challenge, but I think we’ve got the right people in the right spot,” Dianne said. “The cast is spot on with their lines and their delivery is great. People will have to laugh quietly though because it’s very funny, but you don’t want to miss anything while trying to figure out who did it.”

David and Shelley Slykhuis will be cooking the dinner for the dinner theatre. The always delicious meal starts at 7 p.m., cocktails are held at 6 p.m., and the performance on Friday and Saturday will be held at 8 p.m. The Sunday matinee is a 2 p.m. show.

Tickets to the play can be purchased at The Pearl Boutique.

One exciting addition to the theatre includes an extra cubicle in the ladies washroom upstairs.

“Ladies at intermission were always lined up and those that are able would go downstairs, but that was difficult for our older patrons sometimes and they’d be lined up for the one cubicle here. So, there will be two there now and one of them will be wheelchair accessible.”

National Immunization Awareness Week April 22-29 Vaccinations have been saving lives for more than two centuries and are generally considered the most successful public health intervention ever devised. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that vaccines prevent more than two million deaths worldwide every year. Immunization prevents many communicable diseases.

There have been a number of recent measles outbreaks in Canada. Many of these outbreaks are linked to a decrease in the number of children receiving vaccinations. Measles is a highly contagious virus that is spread through the air. The measles virus is so contagious that if one person has it, 90% of the people near that person, who are not immune, will also become infected. One in 10 people with measles develops pneumonia and/or ear infections. One in 10,000 people experiences an infection of the brain called encephalitis. One in 3,000 people who contracts measles will die.

Available information that is based in theory and not evidence has led to a significant amount of unwarranted worry about vaccine safety among parents. Theory-based information is not based on facts or credible research evidence. This type of information has led to myths surrounding the risk of immunizations. As a result, some parents are hesitant to immunize their children, or they may delay or refuse vaccinations for their children.

The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute encourages parents to use evidence-based information to learn about vaccine safety and effectiveness. Evidence-based information is supported by conclu-

Before becoming pregnant, women should be up to date on all vaccinations. A mother’s immunity is passed to her baby during pregnancy to provide protection until the baby can be vaccinated according to the Saskatchewan vaccination schedule.

Women should be aware of guidelines on vaccinations needed before, during, and after pregnancy.

The best way to stay protected is to talk to your healthcare provider.

Leora Thiessen, our new reporter, spent quality time with her families. She is off to Manitoba to visit her sister.

Appreciation to Mary Thiessen and Freda, who brought their guitars; and with Janet Mark at the piano, we had a lovely evening of singing.

It is with sorrow that we learn that Pastor Hans and Wendy Elgby are moving on to further service for Christ. We at the Villa have appreciated their care and concern over the years they have spent here. They leave behind a well trained group of young people in the Associated Gospel Church; who will continue to comfort and inspire us. Our prayers go with them.

Gary and Lorne Junk accompanied their sister Rhonda and her husband Terry Morrow on a few days holiday before Easter to Los Vegas. Others enjoying a spring holiday in Los Vegas for a few days were Kris Potapinski, Ken and Diane Potapinski.

Faye Walker spent from April 12–16 in Saskatoon visiting with her daughter Deidra and Jeff Nickel and granddaughters Olivia, Abby, Claire and Piper. She attended the production of the Musical Lion King Junior, which was held at the girl’s school on Wednesday, April 12. Abby was one of 90 students who participated in the musical and Olivia assisted with the lights and sound.

On April 13 Shelly and Ainsley Cowan traveled to Minot where Ainsley had a dental appointment.

They then spent time visiting with the Nilsen family, enjoying a birthday celebration on Saturday before returning home.

Jeff Cowan (Regina) was home for the weekend (April 14–l6) visiting with his parents, Gray and Edel, as well as his brother Tim Cowan. He also

spent time visiting friends Grant Barber and Jenny Riersgaard.

Spending Easter Sunday at the Cowan farm with Gray and Edel were Joyce and Jackie George (Redvers), Jeff Cowan (Regina), Murray Cowan (Estevan), Dustin Cowan (Weyburn), Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan. They all enjoyed a delicious noon meal and visiting with one another before each returned to their homes.

Hope everyone had a very Happy Easter over the past weekend and that the Easter Bunny left lots of eggs and chocolate behind. The weather wasn’t that particularly nice, very cloudy and cool, however we were lucky to have missed the forecasted snow. We did get a little moisture though enough to wipe the dust off and damped things up.

The men are beginning to get antsy and wishing that they could soon get out in the field. It’s going to be quite some time yet as it is too wet out there and flooding in areas, also it hasn’t been warm enough to warm up the ground. Do believe that it will be at

Visiting with Pat Clements, Gordon and Marie Clements and other family members were Mark and Holly Clements, Emily, Sam and Max from Swift Current, Bill and Janette Bergen of Carlyle. The family enjoyed a great Easter meal together.

Travis and Shannon Houff enjoyed a 13-day trip to Portugal recently. They toured the Douro Valley where the Porto Wine is created. They also toured some of the beaches and spent a day in Spain before returning home.

Visiting with the Birnie families, Eileen Shatford, Bob and Linda, and Neil and Heather was Janice Birnie from Hawaii who will be staying for a month. Also visiting were Jack and Romona Birnie of Watrous, SK and Lyle and Gwen Birnie of Westlock, AB. Nadja Schlinger, Levin and Aiden travelled back to Switzerland from March 29th to April12th. They spent most of the two weeks visit-

ing with Nadja’s and Christian’s family.

I missed mentioning in last week’s news that Lakelynn, baby daughter of Talita and Garrett Mitchell is a sister for Lyla.

Our Easter visitors included Harry and Stacey Heffernan, Kate and Sarah of Regina, Justin Olson, Tamara Buckingham and daughter Callie of Saskatoon, Jake and Carey Lamoureaux , Jack and Will, Craig Olson of Pingtung, Taiwan and Bob Hofos of Kenosee Lake.

While he was here, Craig enjoyed seeing old friends and trying out some new challenges. The following is what he wrote about one of his adventures,” Hear ye, Hear ye! Two local men took the Pipestone Creek by storm this past week. Tuesday, April 11th is the day that many will never forget; Stephen Smulan and Craig Olson became the first in recent memory to kayak down the Pipestone Creek. Excelsior! Well done gentlemen!”

SUMA, SSBA bad enemies to have

By Murray Mandryk Keeping every stakeholder group happy is a virtual impossibility for any Saskatchewan government.

Sure, there are going to be certain stakeholders usually aligned with any governing parties particular philosophies.

Generally, NDP governments could count on the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour and a series of other non-governmental organizations tasked with delivering social policies.

But when finances got tight, even NDP governments couldn’t exactly depend on these groups to silently sit by and say nothing.

Similarly, the former Progressive Conservative government and now the Saskatchewan Party government could generally lean on the Chambers of Commerce, most agriculture groups and the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities.

(SARM’s long-standing feud with left-wing government can be traced back 60 years to the CCF Tommy Douglas’s Royal Commission on Agriculture that suggested replacing the province’s RM system with a country system.)

But like the NDP, conservative-minded governments could not always rely on these stakeholders to be quiet when government policy was not in their interest.

In this vein, the most critical such stakeholders are the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) and the Saskatchewan School Board

Association (SSBA), largely because these organizations provide services to such a wide breadth of this province.

And while no Saskatchewan government is ever going to have a perfect relationship with SUMA and the SSBA, it is generally easier to keep a good, working relationship with these two key stakeholder groups that are viewed as neutral.

So the approach of Premier Brad Wall’s government to the concerns raised by SUMA and the SSBA has been more than a little strange.

It is, after all, SUMA and SSBA who will be responsible for doling the distasteful dose of bad medicine in the 2017-18 Saskatchewan budget.

Recently, the deputy minister of Education sent out letters to school boards re-affirming that the province expected them to negotiate a 3.5-percent wage decrease and no increases for next three years.

However, the letter stressed to the boards that these cuts “cannot be achieved through further reductions in staff levels, capturing attrition or other cost reductions beyond that which is required to meet operating grant targets.”

But no sooner was that letter made public than Finance Minister Kevin Doherty was telling reporters at the Saskatchewan legislature that layoffs might be needed in education to achieve this cut/ wage freeze.

This all came on the heels of this government’s on-going justification for eliminating SaskPower

and SaskEnergy grants-in-lieu to 109 specific cities and towns in this province.

It’s a move that the government has slightly amended so that communities likes Yorkton and North Battleford aren’t take quite the hit they would have taken.

But what seems clear is that SUMA and SSBA, normally, rather neutral, are very frustrated.

These organizations have seen their members’ budgets cut. They have been criticized for raising property taxes and cutting non-core services.

Is it any wonder we are hearing SUMA and SSBA now say they no long feel they have a partnership with the province?

In fairness to Wall’s government, it is taking the braver course of attempting to deal with the deficit and debt, head on.

As previously mentioned in this space, that seems more reasonable than the hope-and-prayer approach of Alberta’s NDP government that’s relying on oil price recovery to address its much bigger deficit.

Wall also is right that it has provided cities and towns with record revenue sharing in the past 10 years.

But the province’s suggestion that cities and towns (which can’t legally run deficits) should simply rely on their earmarked reserves to balance operational shortfalls isn’t exactly sage advice.

Moreover, it’s making enemies out of stakeholders that government need to at least remain neutral.

Arcola Easter Egg Hunt a hopping success The Arcola Fair and Stampede Society (Arcola Fair Board) was aided by the Arcola Girl Guides in hosting a free Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Arcola Fair Grounds.

There were a total of 500 eggs to find and three golden eggs within each age division (five and under, 6-10, and 11 and older) were hidden for bigger prizes. A total of 100 treat bags were given out during the day.

Chris Davis brought live bunnies which was extremely popular with all age groups. We had an adult dressed up as an Easter Bunny and they posed for many pictures.

Additionally the girl guides had a bake sale, raffle, cookies, and various carnival games set up for those attending to enjoy.

“It was awesome!” exclaimed Monika Galloway with the Arcola Fair Board. “It was so well attended and we’re very happy with how the day went.”

“The fair board had the newly updated exhibition fair book available for people to pick up,” Monika Galloway explained. “Our hope was they can see what exhibits are available to enter in (hoping that people will start make crafts, etc…) to enter in the fair.”

She encourages people to start thinking of what they can craft or bake this July long weekend during the Antique Ag Daze.

The Arcola Fair Board and the Arcola Girl Guides are appreciative of the community’s support in hosting the event.
