Healthy living can mitigate chronic diseases Kelly Running Observer Staff

Being active during the winter months can be a struggle, but it’s important to find different ways to exercise. Whether you’re shovelling snow, cross-country skiing, or going for a short walk, exercise can oftentimes make people feel better and it promotes a healthy lifestyle.

With spring-like temperatures, however, getting exercise will become easier and making the change to one’s lifestyle now and carrying it through the winter can be simpler than attempting to become active during the cold, winter months.

According to Stats Canada, over half of the Canadian population, 54 percent, are overweight or obese (stats from 2014). In Saskatchewan Stats Canada reports 58.4 percent as of 2014 were overweight or obese.

Overweight is defined as having more body weight than is considered normal or healthy for one’s age or build and is determined through the Body Mass Index. Obesity is the condition of having a Body Mass Index of over 30.

Being overweight or obese increases the risk of chronic diseases, therefore being active and eating well reduces this risk and can help make one feel better.

Specifically looking at Saskatchewan, difficulties of maintaining a healthy lifestyle come with our extremely cold winters and our hot summers, while geography can also hinder people in being active as those who live in town can walk to work but many commute and do not have this option therefore finding it difficult to make time in their busy day to exercise.

According to the Conference Board of Canada’s annual report card, which looks at how Canada stacks up to the rest of the world. As of February 2015 Canada had earned a “B.” Health is defined by the World Health Organization as “the state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

The Health Report Card took life expectancy, premature mortality, infant mortality, self-reported health status, self-reported mental health status, mortality due to cancer, mortality due to heart disease and stroke, mortality due to respiratory disease, mortality due to diabetes, mortality due to diseases of the nervous system, and suicides, into account.

Saskatchewan’s Health Report Card read as follows: - Life expectancy: D - Premature mortality: D - Infant mortality: D- Self-reported health status: A - Self-reported health status: A - Mortality due to cancer: B - Mortality due to heart disease and stroke: B - Mortality due to respiratory disease: B - Mortality due to diabetes: D - Mortality due to diseases of the nervous system: B - Suicides: C In fact according to the study, Saskatchewan was found to be the second-to-last amongst the provinces regarding healthy living.

All of these can be mitigated through embracing a healthy lifestyle.

In fact the study states, “obesity is one of the most significant contributing factors to many chronic conditions, including heart disease, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes…”

“The rising obesity rates for Canadians of all ages clearly places them at risk for future chronic diseases.”

Additionally, such activities as alcohol and tobacco consumption can also increase one’s risks when it comes to chronic diseases.

Therefore, lifestyle choices such as physical activity and diet are key to prevention.

“Results suggest that even a modest improvement in physical activity can yield tangible benefits,” the Conference Board of Canada states. “Indeed, by simply getting 10 percent of Canadians with suboptimal levels of physical activity to reduce their sedentary behaviour and exercise more, the incidence rates for major chronic conditions like heart disease, cancer, hypertension, and diabetes would be reduced substantially. This would boost life expectancy and lessen the burden on the health care system.”

“Given the rising rates of chronic diseases and the impact that lifestyle choices have on these diseases, active participation of patients in setting their own health goals and management plans is

more relevant than ever before.”

Eating right includes following the Canadian Food Guide (http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/foodguide-aliment/maintain-adopt/index-eng.php), eliminating “screen time,” and being active.

According to the World Health Organization children aged 5-17 should be active for at least 60 minutes – moderate to vigorous – each day.

Further activity hours will provide added health benefits and it is suggested they focus on aerobic activities that strengthen muscle and bone at least three times per week.

For people aged 18-64, as the World Health Organization classifies, it is suggested that people participate in at least 150 minutes of moderate exercises throughout a week or 75 minutes of vigorous cardio in a week. This can also be a combination of moderate to vigorous exercise. Aerobic activity should last at least 10 minutes. For added health benefits an individual could engage in 300 minutes of moderate activity in a week or 150 minutes of vigorous intensity, or a combination. Additionally muscle-strengthening activities should be done involving major muscle groups at least two days or more in a week.

Adults 65 and older should participate in activities as those between 18 and 64, however, adults with poor mobility should perform physical activity to enhance balance and prevent falls three or more days a week. Additionally, if older adults are limited due to health conditions, they should be as physically active as their abilities allow.

Playing the Pipes: Bagpiper Regan Miller’s Music Lynne Bell

Regan Miller has been playing the bagpipes for over 25 years. The Carlyle resident began playing the pipes as an 11-year-old and since then, has played in pipe bands- and as an individual piper- in both Canada and New Zealand. And although he is not a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Miller was asked to join the RCMP Regina Pipes and Drums- where he has played during the RCMP’s iconic Sunset Ceremony and at Regina’s Brandt Centre in the presence of Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor, Vaughn Schofield.

“I’ve been with them for about four years,” says Miller. “I was asked to play with them. I knew an RCMP member who also played the pipes and he suggested it to me.”

“I try to get in to the RCMP Depot when I can. We practice once a week and we do all kinds of events. For me, one of the neatest ones was piping at the Sunset Ceremony. Our uniform is the red serge and a kilt and the Sunset Ceremony is one of those events you remember.”

“But we play all kinds of things. Our next one is an event on St. Patrick’s Day,” adds Miller.

Growing up in Harding, Manitoba, Miller’s interest in the bagpipes began early.

“There were a couple of pipers in my family,” he says. “My brother and brother-in-law now play the pipes, too.”

“I started playing with the Rivers and District Pipe Band in Rivers, Manitoba,” he adds. “They were a very well-established pipe band and they’ve been around since the 1950s- probably since right after World War II.” “We played a lot of fairs and parades throughout the years and I soon learned it takes a bit of air to play the bagpipes,” says Miller. “It also takes some coordination, but it’s like anything else- it has a lot to with practice.”

“I bought my first set of bagpipes when I was 17-years-old, when I graduated from high school,” he says.

“When I was 18, I took my pipes to New Zealand- where I went for a ninemonth agricultural exchange- and I joined the McKenzie Highland Pipe Band there.”

“It was a lot of fun,” says Miller. “If you don’t join pipe bands, you’re kind of limiting yourself. It’s hard to stay at home and only play solo. You might do the occasional funeral, ceremony or birthday, but it’s better if you can play

both in a group and as an individual.”

In addition to the RCMP Pipes and Drums and bands in Rivers, Manitoba and New Zealand, Miller has been a member of the Virden Army Cadet Pipe Band and the Royal Canadian Artillery Pipes and Drums, also in Manitoba.

Miller owns both a large and a small set of bagpipes. “The full set is what most people play,” he says. “Typically, you don’t see a smaller set. But the smaller set has a softer sound and it’s quieter, so it’s good for practicing at home.”

“Basically, they require typical maintenance,” adds Miller. “The reeds need to be replaced and there’s other basic upkeep. But really, the more you play a set of pipes, the better it is for the instrument.”

However, playing the pipes often holds its own set of challenges- especially weather-related ones. “There are definitely challenges,” he says. “I recently played at the Legion’s Bonspiel here in Carlyle. If you’re on the ice or outside on a cold day, that cold can freeze up the reeds. Rain isn’t good, either. If you can, the best thing to do is have someone hold an umbrella over you if you have to play in the rain.”

“Humidity is a real challenge in gen-

eral,” he adds. “If the humidity changes enough, over time it will change the tone of the pipes.”

“But as I said, the best thing you can do is play. The more you play, the better condition your pipes will be.”

To that end, Miller is also teaching a local teenager to play the pipes.

“I’ve taught a fair bit in Cadets,” he says. “I’m not a professional. There are five grades of piping. Grade one is a professional piper and grade five is a student. I’d say I’m midway in those rankings, but I’m happy to help someone who is interested in playing the bagpipes to get a start.”

“And for me, it’s another opportunity to play.”

As a solo piper, Miller has played competitively and at events ranging from the celebratory to the somber.

“I’ve played at Robbie Burns nights, at birthdays and anniversaries and I’ve also done Remembrance Day ceremonies and funerals,” he says. “Those happy events are a lot of fun and of course, funerals are kind of tough. But whatever the occasion is, there are a lot of people out there who get choked up by the sound of the bagpipes. It can be really emotional.”

“Anywhere I go to play, someone always says, ‘Oh, I love the bagpipes.’

And that’s really rewarding for me.”

Weekly RCMP report Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle detachment of the RCMP responded to a variety of calls between Friday, Feb. 17, and Thursday, Feb. 23.

911 calls Two 911 calls were deemed to be non-emergencies including a misdial. The third 911 call resulted in

charges for fraudulent use of the emergency line.

Assaults Four assaults were reported during this time. Two occurred in the Carlyle area and two in the Redvers area.

Three out of four of the reports were determined to be unfounded, while one of the reports from Redvers remains under investigation.

Break and enter Two break and enters occurred: one was determined to be unfounded in Redvers and

one is currently under investigation in the Carlyle area.

Fraud A report of fraud in the Carlyle area was reported and is currently under investigation.

Failure to comply Two individuals were discovered to have failed to comply with release conditions and were both charged.

RCMP stopped a 43-year-old male who was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content over 0.08.

Assistance RCMP assisted individuals in calls regarding mental health.

Mischief Five mischief calls were attended to during this time. Two were non-police matters.

One call involved an individual who thought

they heard glass breaking. RCMP investigated, but it was determined to be unfounded.

There was a call reporting an individual on foot, in the ditch along Hwy 9. RCMP attended and picked up the intoxicated individual, lodging them in cells until sober.

One call remains under investigation.

Theft A theft was reported in Carlyle of a licence plate, but it was determined to be unfounded.

Traffic collisions Three minor collisions were reported. No charges were laid in any of the instances.

Traffic safety offences A total of 32 traffic safety offences ranging from speeding to not stopping at a stop sign to inspection tickets were issued during this time.

The high speeder this week was ticketed $184 for travelling 32 km over the posted speed limit.

Rural Women’s Month celebrated The province proclaimed March as Rural Women’s Month in Saskatchewan.

“One quarter of farm operators in Saskatchewan are women, and rural women work in all areas of our agriculture industry,” Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart said. “Their expertise and leadership is vital to our communities and to agriculture, and helps drive continued growth in the sector.”

Rural Women’s Month is a time to recognize the contributions of rural women to their communities, the agriculture industry and to all sectors of the economy.

are vital to strengthening Saskatchewan communities and the provincial economy,” Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women Tina Beaudry-Mellor said. “They are equal partners within the family and its agri-food and agribusiness ventures and take on active leadership roles within their communities. Our government recognizes this important work which not only supports our growth plan objectives, but also benefits society as a whole.”

With Durant, Warriors have talent overload

By Bruce Penton What do you get when you have the National Basketball Association’s most perfect chocolate sundae, already topped with a bright red cherry, and then you add another bright red, fresh cherry just for good measure?

You have the Golden State Warriors. About as close to perfection as any team could possibly be.

The Warriors, led

by Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, were the dominant team in the NBA last season, losing only nine of 82 regularseason games. But that historic regular season meant nothing in the end, as LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers bounced back from a 3-1 series deficit to edge the Warriors four games to three in the NBA Finals.

Rather that simply vow to try harder next year, the Warriors went the roster excess route, signing 6-foot-9 free agent superstar Kevin Durant, who along with Russell Westbrook had kept the Oklahoma City Thunder as a respectable contender. No longer, unfortunately.

Adding Durant — a former MVP and four-time scoring champ — to the Warriors was like Bill Gates winning the Powerball lottery, like Hawaii getting bluer skies.

Instead of winning by 10 points, adding Durant meant the Warriors’ braintrust wanted to win games by 20.

So far, it’s working out. Durant, Curry, Thompson and Green

all made the West team in the recent NBA allstar game. Golden State, comfortably leading the Western Conference, is en route to losing more games than last year, but they seem to have learned a valuable lesson: Regular season is just a warmup. All that really counts is the playoffs.

Durant is not leading the NBA in a number of offensive categories, but he’s near the top in most of them.

Coach Steve Kerr has the luxury of giving his stars plenty of in-game rest, having two or three of them on the floor at all times while giving his thoroughbreds plenty of bench time.

Those basketball thoroughbreds having an extra gear in June will come in handy when the inevitable happens: The Warriors meet up with James and the Cavaliers in the NBA finals There will be a different result this time around, and the Warriors’ extra cherry on top will be the reason why.

Handling sloughs and wetlands

By Calvin Daniels There are always two sides to a given coin, and that is certainly the case when it comes to what to do with sloughs and wetlands in a farm field.

Producers of course want to cultivate every acre as a way to generate maximum dollars.

That is generally a simple approach which makes sense, at least to a point.

There are of course costs, and potential issues, associated with draining a wetland, and even once drained, the wettest years may well leave it impossible to seed, or harvest.

The issues are well-understood.

Land drainage has created many problems over the years, often pitting neighbour against neighbour.

It is of course a reality when a farmer ditches to drain a wetland on their farm that water must go somewhere, and while it may sometimes have been diverted into a natural waterway capable of handling the additional water, in other cases that water ended up on neighbouring land, not always a happy occurrence.

While there have been rules to follow for some time in terms of drainage, the interpretation of those rules by some farmers has been rather broad, and as a result the reality of drainage was haphazard.

Now to fulfil commitments in the 25-Year Saskatchewan Water Security Plan, the Water Security Agency (WAS) is moving ahead with a new approach to drainage management. The new approach will move Saskatchewan toward responsible agricultural water management by streamlining the regulatory system,

effectively addressing the risks associated with drainage in the approval process, and enabling development of sustainable drainage projects with more long-term certainty.

That all sounds smooth and simple, but the bottom line is farmers are going to be ditching to drain wetlands legally without a plan, which will have development costs associated with it, is in place and is approved by the appropriate authority.

The old systems never worked, so one hopes this latest incarnation works without being too onerous on those involved.

But a more basic question should be if there is a better option to draining every slough and pothole?

There is an obvious benefit to wetlands, from on-the-land storage capacity for spring and rain-event run-off, to habitat for a range of wetland critters. In both examples the benefits are far more ones of the greater public good than to a specific farmer who owns the land.

So there would seem merit in public support of maintenance of such wetlands.

Alternative Land Use Services (ALUS), a community-developed, farmer-delivered program that provides support to farmers and ranchers to enhance and maintain nature’s benefits, is a step in that direction.

It is not the complete answer for farmers maintaining fringe lands in a natural state, but it is a good program upon which to build to provide farmers a good reason not to worry about drainage regulations because they will have a better reason to maintain those lands.

It improves memory skills and problem solving as your baby figures out how to manipulate each piece to make it fit. It teaches patience and is rewarding when the final picture is put together. As babies re-do a previously put together puzzle, they learn to remember where the pieces went before. This all helps your baby build an understanding of the world around them.

When introducing a puzzle to your baby start with one with only 5-7 pieces. Put the puzzle piece in baby’s

hand. Then try: • 1st time = Guide baby’s hand with the piece into the right spot • 2nd time = Guide baby’s hand to almost to the right spot, and then allow baby to figure out where the piece goes • 3rd time = Point to the right spot, prompting baby to put the piece where it belongs Continue this way, only giving your baby as much help as you feel they need to succeed. Step back and watch them figure it out on their own.

Puzzles can be a great addition to your baby’s play time. When playing with your baby always remember to keep it brief, fun and stop before baby has had enough.

How do interest rates influence your investment choices?

In our country, the Bank of Canada (BoC) sets the benchmark interest rate and raises or lowers it to steady or stimulate the Canadian economy and avoid inflation. Although our economy has strengthened over the past few months, and moderate growth is expected to continue, the BoC has opted to keep its benchmark interest rate low.

Winter road restrictions and spring weights Milder winter weather will impact truck haul weights on some Saskatchewan highways, beginning this week. The increased winter weights will be removed in southwest Saskatchewan beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, February 24.

Truckers and shippers are advised to monitor their loads and watch for restrictions during what is a very sensitive period for some of our highways as the roadbed thaws and becomes weaker. The first spring weight restrictions will be published on www.highways.gov.sk.ca/restrictions (www.saskatchewan.ca/truckingweights). Regularly scheduled updates of the winter restriction orders will be provided every Tuesday and Friday by 12:30 p.m. until March 15 when winter weights are no longer in effect.

Since early December, colder weather has allowed trucks to carry heavier loads. The freeze period during the cold winter months strengthens the road bed which supports heavier truck loads. Typically, these winter weights run from mid-November through mid-March; however, milder winter weather can reduce the winter weights period.

Spring Road Bans Truckers also need to be aware of upcoming spring road bans and follow weight limits on secondary roads during this fragile six week thaw period.

Warmer weather on the horizon

With the temperatures buoying between warm and cold, I’m particularly getting excited for the summer months.

Personally I don’t mind winter, all of the seasons are beautiful in my opinion. Although I hate being cold… my mom did teach me to dress in layers, so Kelly Running it’s not a problem. And at the end Observer Staff of the day when I think of why I live somewhere the air hurts my face… I remember helping with some gardening in Australia, seeing a common garden spider the size of my hand… the cold air stops crazy bugs and arachnids from getting that big.

So, I’ll take the cold over those crazy things… like leeches that just live in the forests there because it’s wet enough. I mean they were tiny, just little squirmy black lines, until they latched on and started filling up on blood. But, it was weird that leeches were checked for after going for a hike. I mean here you might expect a tick, but leeches. It was tough to wrap my mind around.

However, despite the fact that I’ve come to appreciate the cold weather, I do love the summer. When I was little my family would go camping and I’d force them to set up the tent next to the camper, because let’s face it, tenting is the best. The best sleeps, the freshest air, it’s beautiful.

I must say it’s what I’m particularly looking forward to this year. Last year, I had a great experience as an assistant coach with Team Southeast, I mean the girls won gold and I don’t think I’ve ever been in a gym that loud before in my life. I met some truly wonderful people and very much enjoy running into them now… but, it did take up a lot of the summer and I actually haven’t had a break from coaching since the summer of 2015, so I’m looking forward to a bit of a slowdown. Just work and no other commitments.

So, as one of my favourite coaching books says, you’ve got to fill different pockets: family, friends, volleyball, camping, work, etc… Each one is a pocket and you have to fill them with time and although I love it and wouldn’t change a thing, my volleyball pocket has gotten pretty full recently. And for me, there’s not much to do in the winter anyways, but the summer brings camping. Campfires, kayaking, hiking, and just enjoying nature is so nice. The calmness of it all is beautiful: the wind rustling the leaves of the trees, a campfire crackling, and the sound of a babbling brook. It’s all just so calming and the scenic views of Saskatchewan are mesmerizing.

Although I enjoy all of the seasons and even with this winter being particularly cold, I’m quite happy to see the start of the changing to spring because it means I’ll soon be enjoying the warm tenting weather that comes for a few short months here and a little extra time to enjoy.

Protecting the panda… saving ourselves When it comes to irresistibly cute animals it’s hard to top the adorable panda. Striking colouring highlighted by distinctive black patches around their eyes make them irresistible, even more so when watching them play in freshly fallen snow as we saw in video released last month by zoos in Toronto and Washington.

Shelley Luedtke Since they are native to central China, agreements between governments allow for exchanges to take place which have given many people an opportunity to see these beauties up close. Scientists have collaborated in research projects concerning the protection of the giant panda, which is now considered a conservation reliant vulnerable species.

Animals carry a designation indicating the state of their current population: vulnerable, threatened, and sadly some critically endangered. Efforts around the world seek to save and protect many of these species. Some have been lost, but others have been protected to the point they are thriving again.

But it took work. It always does when something important is on the line.

Those who compile dictionaries announce each year what is being added to the collection of words based on new terms brought into common use. At the same time, and not nearly as widely noted, are words deemed irrelevant; words destined for the endangered list since they are considered archaic and obsolete. Words we don’t need anymore. Like snollygoster, a noun describing a shrewd or unprincipled person; or supererogate which means to do more than is required.

Jane Austen ranks as one of my favourite authors.

There is a flow to the sentence structure and a depth of vocabulary contained in the dialogue that is so rich and full. We don’t speak that way any longer.

True, some words simply go out of vogue, but when it comes to conversation we have become rather lazy.

One of my favourite Austen quotes about friendship is found in Northanger Abbey: “There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. I have no notion of loving people by halves, it is not my nature.” Of course we may share a similar sentiment today but it would sound more like, “Relax, I got your back.”

But it’s not just the words or the cadence I lament.

It’s the wealth of shared experience that comes wrapped with those words. And while we can continue our interactions without words like snollygoster or supererogate, there are some words that appear to be endangered, or at the very least threatened, but ones we don’t want to live without. Like decorum: behaviour in keeping with good taste. Manners: acting according to polite standards. Civility: a polite action or expression. Truth: a statement of accuracy. These words are not just vocabulary; they are crucial ideas concerning how we are going to live and interact with one another. It seems these are ones we are seeing less and less of--in a time we desperately need to be seeing them more and more.

Instead we are witnessing spectators bullying coaches and officials, pundits shouting at each other on news programs, politicians fabricating statements, and citizens attempting to silence anyone who doesn’t agree with them. Have we become so accustomed to poor behaviour we have lowered our expectations? Of our leaders? Of others? Of ourselves?

Fashion and decor may go out of style and some species may become endangered, but we cannot let manners, civility, decorum and truth go the way of shoulder pads or the passenger pigeon. We have something to fight for, and it starts with us. The more we model this in ourselves and the more we expect it of others the more likely it is to propagate.

Diligence and higher expectations are necessary if we are to rescue how we speak and interact with one another. We’ve demonstrated we can rescue a species. Do we have the collective will to rescue ourselves?

That’s my outlook.

Grand Entrance

Remember that column I wrote about being too tired to function. It has since gotten better; although it may be a completely different story when this column gets to press. We had a couple more incidents in there, but for the most part, she is sleeping straight through until morning.

Krystyn Gillies Let me tell you what happened one of those nights, because it seems people think it is pretty funny, although we almost didn’t at the time. A few nights ago, we went through our bedtime routine with little to no fuss, which is very normal. We eat supper, play for a while then it is time for jammies.

When we say, it is times for jammies, she will run to our bedroom where we change her diaper, put her into her pajamas and then head to the bathroom to brush our teeth. She stands on the counter and the three of us brush our teeth in front of the mirror.

Pause. Just for a moment, in the time it has taken me to write those three above paragraphs, I could hear a small, distant noise. I automatically assume that the child is upstairs. Run upstairs, observe the child covered in paint. Paint. I climb the stairs and see small grey handprints on my freshly painted walls. Thankfully I have one more coat to

do; here’s hoping handprints cover easily. (This all took place in less than eight minutes).

Back to the story. After our teeth are freshly brushed, we snuggle on the couch for a few minutes, winding down from our busy day. Sometimes she falls asleep on one of us and sometimes we put her in her bed and she goes right to sleep.

From there, my husband and I crawl into bed and watch one of our shows then fall asleep roughly around 10:00 p.m. Most times, the next time we see her is when my husbands alarm goes off the next morning. Not this night though. At about 2:00 in the morning, I could hear rustling in her bed.

After a minute or three, she trots into our room mumbling something about Cheerios. I climb out of our bed and gather her up and explain to her that it isn’t time to wake up yet. She must sleep at least until daddy’s alarm goes off. She madly told me that she wasn’t into the idea, but I gave her a kiss and a hug and put her back in her bed.

She whined for a few minutes then it got quiet.

My husband had briefly woken but immediately went back to sleep as soon as I crawled back into bed. I personally cannot sleep while I know she is still awake. Never could, probably never will. So, I opened my phone and read my e-book and read for roughly a half an hour.

I hadn’t heard anything for quite a while, so I quietly set my phone down and closed my eyes. A

few minutes later I heard a noise. I assumed it was one of the dogs readjusting positions and tried to go back to sleep. A minute or two later, I heard another noise. Kind of a squeaking sound. I listened carefully, trying to figure out what the familiar noise was.

Pause again. In the time it has taken me to write those paragraphs, I hear a little splish, splash. Go out to the kitchen and find the toddler filling all her play pots and pans with dog water and “making chicken” she says. I ask her to dump all the water back into the dish and take her pots and pans back to her kitchen so I can finish my column.

Back to my story. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out the sound and just as I was about to go investigate, the toddler comes flying around the corner into the kitchen… on her tricycle… at nearly 3:00 in the morning. My husband wakes up and asks what happened and I explained to him the issue and he just laughed. A moment or two later, I joined him and we all laughed for a while then began the process of putting her back to bed again.

She did stay there that time, but who decides to make an entrance like that at 3:00 in the morning, on a tricycle no less? Our toddler does I suppose. From then on though, she has been sleeping through again, so I hope that keeps happening. I can’t say that I am looking forward to her imagination that early in the morning any time soon, but I might as well brace myself.

What’s a weekend?

“So! Whatcha got planned for the weekend?”

The question, posed in a chipper young voice and set between bits of soft, happy humming came from the other side of a computer monitor. The voice’s owner was waiting for her computer to do its thing and had some time for small talk. My Jocelyn Hainsworth mind had been on all the other things I had to do while I was in town so it kind of surprised me to be asked about plans for further down the road. Besides, I’m retired, I wasn’t even sure of what day it was.

I managed to come up with an answer for her. I have a bunch of things planned in the next week although only one of them was going to happen on the weekend, but it seemed to satisfy her. She went on with her work and I sat back and thought about how two people can use the same word but have such different perspectives on what it means.

While we were both speaking English and we had both said “weekend”, we weren’t on the same page.

She was in her early to mid twenties. She was thinking about fun stuff – maybe a hot date? A sporting event? A dance? A concert in the city?

Or, being as she was a working girl, did she just want to sleep in late and take it easy for a couple days? I reached way way way back into my memory banks and recalled what that felt like. Back then the word ‘weekend’ had the ring of magic to it. No wonder she was humming to herself.

Weekends are something that kind of fade in and out of significance as one goes through life.

When we are very young life is just a series of days. My dad was a farmer so every day was a work day; it wasn’t like he went to town to work at a job.

Besides, we had dairy cows – they had to be milked twice a day, every day. They didn’t take days off, so neither did we. Sundays stood out because we went to church, and in the summer time we spent Sunday afternoons at the lake, but ‘weekend?’ – what was that?

School life changed answered that question. We still had the cows that needed milking twice a day every day, but the understanding of five days of work and two days off took hold. Along with all the other things you learn in those early years is the concept of days, weeks, months, and years settle in; the rhythm of the classes, the power of the bell either calling you in or letting you go. Five days of

work, two days of play; the message is clear – play days are less frequent and therefore more precious.

Our teen years are spent trying to cram the most (usually the dumbest or most dangerous) stuff into those two days off. Miraculously most of us survive.

The word ‘weekend’ takes on a whole new meaning when we reach adulthood. The years of careers and kids means another adjustment. There are so many bases to cover free time becomes a most precious resource. Party time fades out and family time flows in. The closely monitored calendar marks off the days to camping trips and sports tournaments, family reunions and weekend getaways.

Life continues to unfold. Those busy years pass and you find your social calendar shrinking as the kids leave home. I have even gone one step further

and retired so that I could stay home and play in my gardens. I work when the sun shines and stay inside when it rains – Mother Nature sticks to no weekly schedule with her weather. And since she doesn’t acknowledge weekends, and my husband’s job has a similar attitude, I don’t pay much attention to them either There are weeks like this past one has been when I haven’t been on the right day once. I was going to go to the city on Monday, but it was a holiday so it felt like a weekend. We had company on Wednesday so it felt like a Sunday. I went to town on Friday but for some reason my brain took it as a Monday. Today is a Saturday but you couldn’t tell by me.

I’m going to church tomorrow hoping that it at least start me off on the right foot for this week – and it occurs to me that this is how it all started out.

Wawota leads Redvers; Yellow Grass up on Bienfait

The Big Six Playoffs are underway with the Wawota Flyers looking to defend last year’s championship. Wawota is currently in competition with the Redvers Rockets leading by one game at The Observer’s deadline; while the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings has earned a 8-6 win

over the Bienfait Coalers in the first of their best of five series.

Wawota faced off against the Rockets on Wednesday, Feb. 22, where Wawota earned a 4-3 win in Redvers.

With the game tied 2-2, it came down to the third period. Wawota found the net quickly with a goal two minutes in by Taylor Ernst assisted by Devin Stewart and Dylan Lamontagne.

Five minutes later Kent Sauter put away a goal with an assist by Rob West to take a two goal lead. Redvers put in the effort and scored a third goal with 5:43 left in the game by Craig Gaudet assisted by Brady Fidierchuk.

The teams battled, but the Wawota Flyers came out on top. They played on Tuesday, Feb. 28, and Wednesday, March 1, as well. If needed the other of the best of five matches will be decided, so check out next week’s Observer with updates on Big Six Action.

The Southeast Vipers 17U team attended their Sask Cup 2 on Feb. 25 and 26 in Weyburn by the Weyburn Volleyball Club and the Sask Volleyball Association.

The Vipers had a tough first day facing off against Weyburn who came out on fire in their home gym and the Huskies Volleyball Club from Saskatoon. They then battled against Muenster and Lloydminster, but came up short dropping to Tier 2.

The next day the girls took on Thundering Hills, winning in two sets. The Vipers then met Waldheim United next. United was up in the first 14-6, but with a momentum

change fought their way back into the match narrowly losing it by a couple of points. In the second and third sets the Vipers were smooth and deliberate in their actions, which led them to meet the Oxbow Black Knights in the Tier 2 final.

Congratulations to the Black Knights who earned gold in Tier 2 against the Vipers who earned silver in a three set match versus the Black Knights. The Vipers entered the Sask Cup sitting in 10th and finished overall in 10th again.

Congratulations as well to Weyburn’s 17U team who earned seventh in Tier 1 and thank you to the host community for a well run Sask Cup.

Lampman mixed curlers take home gold Kelly Running Observer Staff

Lampman School hosted the Southeast District Athletic Association (SEDAA) Playoffs, a 12 team Junior Mixed Curling event, on Feb. 3 and 4. The junior classification of the event means that typically grades seven to nine were eligible to compete although younger students could play if needed.

Attending the event was a team from Weyburn, Midale, Oxbow, Carievale, Gladmar, Estevan, Wawota, three teams from Alameda, and two teams from the host community of Lampman.

After the first day of tournament action Lampman #1, Weyburn, Oxbow, and Estevan teams were left to compete on day two of the event.

Weyburn faced Lampman on Saturday morning on the A-side, while Estevan faced Oxbow on the B-side.

Weyburn fell to Lampman and would take on Estevan in the B-side competition. Weyburn would advance to be B-side champions and were given another chance to take on Lampman. Lampman would once again earn the win over Weyburn and this time claim the gold medal within the SEDAA Playoffs.

Lampman #1 had a strong showing on the Friday and Saturday. The team went undefeated during playoff action to win gold on the A-side. This particular team consists entirely of grade seven students: Lindsay Johnson, Ryder Farnsworth, Kailey Dube, and Hayden Willock. They were coached by Dawn Willock.

Students competing during the Playoffs were praised for their excellent skills and sportsmanship during the two days of action according to attendees.

Basketball & Curling Playoffs Basketball season is well underway at GFK and both junior and senior teams have been busy with practices, exhibition games, and tournaments. GFK senior basketball will be hosting conference basketball at the GFK gym on Saturday, March.

The GFK senior boys’ curling team has been hard at it since after the break, practicing twice a week.

GFK badminton will be starting after the February school break.

Both junior and senior teams will be practicing twice a week and taking part in tournaments and exhibition games throughout the season. Fitness club has been running

since the beginning of September with many eager students coming out Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 7:45 – 8:30. All students and fitness levels are welcome to come at any time. Get your day started right with some exercise.

The nest School Community Council meeting is Wed. March 8 at 7:00 PM in the GFK library. All parents are welcome to attend.

Former Observer journalist publishes encouraging new book Kerr, a Wawota resident, reported for the Observer during most of 2011, during which time he also served its sister publication, The Kipling Citizen. He then went on to write for the Miner Journal newspaper in Esterhazy, before operating his own online news business for nearly four years. He closed that business in the fall of last year, moved back to Wawota, and has since re-focused his energies on writing spiritual and self-help material.

The new book was inspired by a series of encouraging quotes Kerr was writing on his facebook and Twitter accounts. Kerr explains, “The quotes had to be short because of the limitations of Twitter, but they were intended to enlighten, enrich and encourage people. They were well-received by readers, and somewhere along the line I decided to create a book with bite-sized vignettes that would similarly encourage folks whether they were down in the valley, up on the mountain tops, or emotionally somewhere in between!”

It would seem that Kerr has indeed fulfilled that intention with the resulting book. One published author wrote, “This beautiful book really is the perfect gift for anyone who needs a daily reminder to embrace life! Filled with daily affirmations and explanations to lift your spirit and change the perspective.” Another said, “The best gift we can receive or give is a gift that would in some way

improve or change our life for the better, and this book if used daily will do just that, for you!” Perhaps the highest accolade came from a very successful speaker who stated, “It falls into the same genre as the bestseller, Chicken Soup for the Soul, comparing very favorably with that classic title, and providing an authentic and inspirational read. Congratulations for producing something that will be of value to many, many people.”

Kerr spoke about the title of the book. “Not only do we all need to be encouraged now and again, but most of us also like to give or receive gifts. As the book evolved I realized it would be the perfect gift for a birthday, anniversary, graduation, retirement or even Christmas. It would be affordable, portable, suitable for all ages, and universal in its appeal.

When a person gives this book to someone they are not just giving them a book, they are giving them the gift of encouragement itself, the gift of good ideas that can brighten their day and potentially change their life. I feel honoured to have written it.”

the epicentre of Swedish-Canadian life. The article pointed out that many of the earliest settlers in our country were farmers and loggers so it only makes sense that they migrated to the prairies; some of them travelled through North Dakota and Minnesota to get here.

As well, Winnipeg was home to Canada’s longest running and most influential Swedish language newspaper, Canada Tidningen (1892–1970); not only that, it was host to a nationwide Swedish cultural organization.

Swedes headed west to British Columbia as job opportunities opened up there. We owe these Swedish-Canadians great thanks for all they have contributed to our country.

Much closer to home, for me at least, is the part of our city where I live. Not that many years ago it was designated as a National Historic District of Canada and stands as a unique treasure on the West Coast. Built to house Powell River Company mill employees, several hundred buildings remain intact, including our house.

Adding to its charm is the fact that every street and avenue here is named for a tree.

We’re on Maple so all the planted trees are maples. The same goes for Oak Street, Arbutus Avenue and so on.

Early Christians were known as disciples of Jesus and His name embodied all that they had longed for.

“That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you and you in Him….” (1 Thessalonians 1:12) As song-writer Lanny Wolfe wrote: Cherish that wonderful name!

The boys participated in District play-downs in Weyburn on Friday Feb 24. They played a very close & tense game against Weyburn, both teams making some very difficult shots. The Carlyle boys came from behind to tie and force an extra end. They were able to steal a point in the extra end for the win. The team advances to Regionals, being held this coming weekend, March 3 & 4th in Estevan.

Consider the Chinese Bamboo Tree: You take a seed, plant it, water it, and fertilize it for a whole year, and nothing happens. You do this for five years.

The fifth year you continue to water and fertilize and the bamboo tree sprouts and grows ninety feet in six weeks.

Here is a lesson in patience. In God’s time we will receive blessings for our efforts.

Preacher Les Brown describes the lesson of growth from the bamboo tree. He pictures a neighbour dropping over to ask about the process: “What are you doing? Really?” And the years go by with nothing to show.

Some may ask Does the bamboo grow 90 feet in six weeks? No. It has been slowly growing underground and it has been carefully nourished.

Parents of children spend five or more years nurturing and caring for tender little seedlings.

Nothing much happens on a given day or even year. Some get discouraged. Then suddenly growth springs, literally, into a gangling teen who

knows everything and can reach the sky. Be ready!

The challenge I put out today is not just for the parents whose job it is to nurture the faith, but also to the children who can nourish the faith of their parents and others.

In a prayer reflection on the family the Knights of Columbus quote Saint John Paul II who said, “The family, like the Church, ought to be a place where the Gospel is transmitted and from which the Gospel radiates…the future of evangelization depends in great part on the Church of the home.”

Yes, “…from their children, they can themselves receive the same gospel as deeply lived by them.” This struck me with some impact when I considered my own family. Two brothers who are priests have left countless blessings and inspirations with my parents, siblings and extended families.

There are many ways even infants inspire faith in us. Take the example I shared with one weekly paper

last Christmas: A family in Italy used to dine at L’EauVive (Living Water).

After their meal they asked to thank all the cooks in person. Little Andrew was excited about the Baby Jesus in the Nativity set. The cooks gave him the Baby Jesus. Every evening Andrew asked the whole family to meet in his room around the Baby Jesus to sing the Ave Maria of Lourdes, “like we did at L’Eau-Vive” he said.

The parish priest came to bless the family’s mountain chalet.

Andrew led him to his Baby Jesus and they sang the Ave Maria.

COUNTDOWN TO CANADA’S 150TH

17 CANADA: NATURAL SOURCE OF PRIDE SINCE 1867

A flash of colour in the Canadian night THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

The swirling swathes of coloured light named Aurora borealis by Italian astronomer Galileo, but also frequently referred to as the Northern Lights, are one of Canada’s natural wonders. Each year from fall to spring, the hued beams of luminescence can be spotted in remote parts of virtually every Canadian province and territory. Colours can range from green to pink, violet, blue, yellow and even red. Witnessing this marvel is often considered a quintessential Canadian experience, and locals and tourists alike arrange excursions far away from city lights to watch the

skies.

Of course Canada isn’t the only place where the Northern Lights can be seen. Many countries in close proximity to the North Pole have access to this weather phenomenon, including Iceland, Finland, Sweden and Russia. Canadians can take pride in being a member of an exclusive club that’s privileged to be able to see the lights in their own backyards.

Varying First Nations and Inuit groups in Canada have their own unique legends and lore surrounding the Northern lights. The Cree and Ojibway, for example, both believe that the Northern Lights are the spirits of their ancestors, while the Algonquin speak of how their creator, Nanahbozho, built a fire that created the lights to remind people he was watching over them.

Further north, many Inuit groups consider the lights to be spirits of the dead playing a game of ball with a walrus skull.

Science, however, has its own explanation. When solar winds interact with the earth’s magnetosphere, charged particles collide with gases in the earth’s upper atmosphere, producing billions of tiny flashes that fill the sky with coloured lights that appear in motion. Different gases in the earth’s atmosphere emit different colours when they interact with solar particles. Oxygen produces green light, while nitrogen gives off a red or blue glow. The altitude of the gases also plays a part.

Since the Northern Lights are a weather phenomenon, their activity isn’t always easy to predict. However, one thing that scientists do know is that peaks occur every 11 years in conjunction with activity in the sun’s solar life cycle. The next peak is set to occur in 2025. CANADA’S RUSSIAN COMMUNITY Politician Michael Ignatieff, actress and director Sarah Polley, musician k.d. lang, and hockey player Andrei Markov are just a few of the prominent Russian Canadians who’ve made waves in recent years. According to the 2011 National Household Survey, there are more than 550,000 citizens of Canada who have full or partial Russian ancestry, with 164,330 reporting that Russian is their mother tongue.

The very first Russians on Canadian soil were fur trappers who hunted in the Haida Gwaii (formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands) and along the coast of British Columbia in the 1790s. However, it wasn’t until nearly a hundred years later that Russians started immigrating to Canada in substantial numbers.

During the last quarter of the 19th century, approximately 20,000 Russians immigrated to Canada. Many of these immigrants became farm labourers, loggers and miners who settled in small communities in Montreal, Toronto, Windsor, Timmins, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Victoria.

Professionals who pursued their careers in Canada were frequently able to do so successfully.

The Great Depression and the Second World War slowed down the influx of Russian immigration to Canada, but from 1948 to 1953 there was another substantial wave. Among this young and welleducated group were many individuals who had been displaced to Germany due to their opposition to Stalin. Immigration slowed again afterwards, but in recent years, due to Russia’s prohibitive stance against homosexuality, many LGBTQ Russians have entered Canada as refugees. However, exact numbers have yet to be tallied.

There are several Russian-language newspapers published and distributed in Canada, and the Russian language is taught at many universities across the country. Russian food is served at eateries in most major Canadian cities.

Congratulations and Best wishes are extended to Stu and Laura McCreary who were married February 24, 2017 in Mexico. The happy couple will be residing in Alida.

Jeff Cowan (Regina) spent the weekend (February 24-26) visiting with his parents Gray and Edel, his brother Tim, Shelly and Ainsley, as well as with friends Grant Barber and Jenny Riersgard.

Attending the funeral at Cantal on Friday, February 24 for Marie Anna Boutin were her sons, Donald and Shelley and their family Aimee and Michele (Cody) Anderson; Raymond and Frances and their daughters Simone and Janelle; Normand; Albert and Sheila and their family Collin (Meghan and Bill), Renee (fiancé Levi), and Emma (fiancé Dakota); Bernard and Tracy and their family Carmelle, Dharma, and Abby; Fernand and Jennifer and their family Leo, Luc, Ben and Anna; daughter Rejeanne and Dallas Fraser and their daughters Josie and Adrie. Other family members included her sisters and brothers and many others as well as friends were also in attendance.

Visiting with Daryl, Cheryl and Thomas Harrison over the weekend (February 25-26) were Carla and Mark Lewis (Saskatoon) and Claire and Christian Bouchard (Carlyle).

On Sunday, February 26 saw Kitchen Group # 2 serving up 43 delicious breakfasts to those who were able to attend. It will now be Group #3 who is at the helm dishing up the breakfast next week.

WOW – what a final game of curling during the Scotties Tournament of Heart on Sunday – it went to an extra end which resulted in Team Ontario (Rachel Homan team) winning the tournament and becoming the new Team Canada for 2017, that also means they got the Gold, and will be representing Canada at the Worlds. Silver therefore went to Team Manitoba and the Bronze went to the former Team Canada (Chelsea Carry team). Kennedy/Langbank News Submitted by Doreen Cancade I had a phone call from a gentleman the other day and the following reminds me of him “ True happiness—arises, in the first place, from the enjoyment of one’s self, and in the next from the friendship and conversation of a few select companions” George Hodgins looks forward to the Citizen every week—therefore if we can make at least one person happy that’s GREAT! On Feb. 25 a great number of folks attended the fun day at the Kennedy Friendship Centre— the cards, pool, laughter, visiting and most of all the food for the whole day. Card players we have no idea who did the winning but the pool players were—A event Glen MCarthy and Stew Lawrence, B event—Calvin Perry and Clair Dorrance. A number of door prizes were won and the 50/50 winner was Bev Shire of Wawota. Every one is a winner just by attending these functions.

The monthly bingo was held at the Friendship Centre Feb. 23. Winners were Betty Penny of Arcola , Marcia Lowe, Dasnielle Bourhis, Sharon Potter, Stan Gurr, Marion Hourd, Jeanne Molnar, Lorraine Gurr, Sue Cummins donated the special prize and it was won by Marci Lowe. The 50/50 draw was taken home by Doreen Szilagyi.

Feb. 26 was a great afternoon when the figure skating club held their Sunday performance “A Night At The Movies” the attendance was great , so nice to see so many little folks on the ice (I think maybe Tucker Berglund was the youngest skater} Nolan Cameron and Jenna Toms the instructors were excellent ( they have so much patience— making the skaters feel at ease) The grand finale presenters were awesome---Some of us never realized the dads are such good skaters? A good way to end the evening A large crowd stayed for the supper.

This past week we have been entertained with some awesome curling—in a few more days we can watch the men.

Curtis Smyth spent a few days of Spruce Grove visiting with his parents Murray \and Leila Smyth and grandmother Iola Smyth—Iola accompanied Murray and Leila to Regina on Friday when they had a chance to visit with Jim and Amaret Smyth, and Lorraine Smyth.

Lorraine Smyth and Kathleen Istace were visitors at the Friendship Centre on a Thursday. Lorraine enjoyed her card game once again.

Word has been received that Jennie Kent of Grenfell passed away recently at the age of 105 years. Condolences to all her family members and friends.

Yvonne Beraton was pleased to have her Members of the Green family of Lampman home recentl0. They all attended birthday celebration for Karrissa Bertalon. Dorothy Domes also spent a day visiting with Yvonne.

Visiting over the weekend with Pat Clements were her son, Dale Dartige and his daughter, Katelynn from Regina, Pat’s daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Bill Bergen of Carlyle, Janet’s daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Derek and their son Andrew of Arcola.

Steve and Deanna Peddle spent several weeks visiting with family and friends in BC recently.

Gordon and Marie Clements, and Trevor and Cheryl Branvold, Brett and Carter enjoyed a vacation to Orlando, FL. They left on February from Bismarck. They visited the Epcot Centre, Disney World and also attended a hockey game with the Oilers and the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Telemiracle fund raisers last week included a continental breakfast hosted by the Drop In and a sub and soup luncheon hosted by the Legion.

Ken and Anne Wilson and Lois Greenbank travelled to St. Catherines, ON to attend the Scotties Curling Event. Ken and Anne’s daughter, Shannon was curling on the Marla Mallett Team out of BC. Shannon who plays third was named all-star to the second team.

Mitch Porter who is attending school in Lethbridge, AB was home last week.

Welcome to Jesse Winkler and family who are renting the United Church Manse. Welcome also to Garth and Lorraine Taylor who have moved into the former Ruth McMillan home on Walter St. They have switched homes with Ben and Christa Taylor and Emrie who have moved to the farm.

The Annual Meeting of Crossroads United Churches was held on Feb. 19. A joint church service was followed by a pot lunch, and then Wawota and Maryfield separate meetings. The afternoon finished with a Meeting of the two congregations.

Word has been received of the passing of Jean (Jeffries) Oliver of Regina. She passed away on Feb. 8 at the age of 88 years. Jean taught school in Wawota in 1949-50 where she met Dale Oliver who also a teacher. They married a few years later.

OBITUARIES Marie Anna Boutin 1931 - 2017 J’irai la voir un jour, au ciel! Surrounded by her children and grandchildren in prayer and song, Marie Anna Boutin passed away peacefully into eternal life on February 18, 2017 at Moose Mountain Lodge, Carlyle, SK. Mom was born on the family farm south of Antler, SK, the oldest child of Rosario and Marie Louise (Lemieux) Poirier.

She was predeceased by her husband Lionel; her parents and her brothers, Gérard, Marcel and Adrien.

She is survived by her daughter Réjeanne (Dallas – Josie and Adrie); her six sons, Donald (Shelley – Aimee and Michele (Cody)), Raymond (Frances – Simone and Janelle), Normand, Albert (Sheila – Collin (Meghan) and Bill, Renée (fiancé Levi), and Emma (fiancé Dakota)), Bernard (Tracy – Carmelle, Dharma, and Abby), and Fernand (Jennifer - Léo, Luc, Ben and Anna). She is also survived by her sisters, Priscille (Gilbert) and Anne Marie (Larry); her brothers, Henri (Elaine), Jean-Charles (Estelle), Joseph (Irène) and Paul (Claudia); her sister-in-law Jeannette, and Lionel’s siblings, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mom was a woman of faith, service, love, peace and family; she loved music, and was happiest when they all came together. She raised her children to be faithful and to pray for guidance whenever it was needed. When you do what is right, life isn’t complicated - Mom lived life this way. Mom was an optimist, looking at the brighter side of situations and hope for the future. If we needed rain for the crops, you just had to pray for it. God always provides, and when you needed the rain to stop during harvest, again, just pray. Mom enjoyed attending her kids’ and grandkids’ curling games and 4-H achievement days, and loved music festivals. Mom also loved family gatherings and used these opportunities to reconnect. In her later years, she became our reason to connect. Mom spent the last 11 ½ years at Moose Mountain Lodge and her love continued to shine through her beautiful smile and twinkle in her eye. She was appreciative of the staff and Sr. Lucille for their loving care. If the purpose of our life on earth is to live it according to Jesus’ word and example with the prize being eternal life in heaven, Mom earned it.

A Prayer Service was held on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. with Sr. Lucille Courcelles presiding and the Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. Melchor Samonte. Both services were held at St. Raphael R.C. Church, Cantal, SK. Interment took place at the parish cemetery, after which a luncheon was held in the Alida Memorial Hall, Alida, SK. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marie Anna’s memory may be made to the St. Raphael Parish Cemetery Fund, Box 124, Alida, SK, S0C 0B0 or the Friends of Moose Mountain Lodge, c/o Town of Carlyle, Box 10, Carlyle, SK, S0C 0R0 (cheque payable to “Town of Carlyle” with “Friends of MML” on the memo line).

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Hall Funeral Services, Redvers.

Thank You The family of Marie Anna Boutin would like thank you for the prayers, phone calls, text and email messages, cards, visits, food, flowers, and memorial donations made in honour of Mom. We thank all who travelled from near and far to attend Mom’s celebration of life. Thank you to Fr. Melchor Samonte and Soeur Lucille for your prayers and the wonderful services. Thank you to the Church and Alida Hall ladies for preparing and serving the lunches. A huge thank you to the Staff at the Moose Mountain Lodge and to Sr. Lucille for their kind and loving care provided to Mom for the past 11½ years. God Bless you all!

Irwin Hainsworth celebrated his 92nd birthday at the Condo.

Our Condo Family keeps busy regardless of the weather outside; this past week many of the residents have been glued to the television watching curling while some others do puzzles and read. Cards are held regularly; on Tuesday afternoon the women gather for the”Penny Game” , Wednesday is Crib and Thursday is Spades. But almost everyday there is a card game of some kind going. We welcome back Don and Lyla Carlsen who have just returned from the sunny south. Special events are always celebrated ; several times a week there is coffee and goodies but for birthdays it is always cake and ice-cream.

Recently Blanche Lamotte and Jen Belisle had their”special milestone birthday “with a large crowd of family and friends. This past week Irwin Hainsworth, one of our older residents , celebrated his 92nd birthday with a nice crowd to enjoy the festivities. We enjoy Potluck meals and will soon have our Irish Stew Supper on St Patrick’s day. In past we have had speakers on a variety of topics, often health related and they are well received.

We are a 55 plus facility but we do have a large age range of tenants.

individual to take on the Director role for the Wawota Daycare. This will be a term position as the position is filling in for a maternity leave. Candidate would begin training in March and maternity leave position would begin in June.

Qualifications: • Level 3 ECE would be an asset, but willingness to take training to obtain education while working is acceptable as well.

Job Description: • Supervise day-to-day operations in the centre.

• Liaison with the Board of Directors, prepare materials for and attend Board or related meetings.

• Establish positive professional working relationships with staff and families as well as being seen as a positive role model for children • Ensures the implementation of developmentally appropriate programs. Warranting that all programming is age appropriate, correct skill level for group etc. and schedule is followed by the group leaders.

• Ability to address parental concerns and comments in a timely profession manner.

• Supervise children and be counted in staff: child ratios • Attend and set agenda for monthly staff meetings and prepare monthly staff schedules.

• Oversee other administrative tasks shared among the staff team.

Act One Productions 2017 cast for “Desperate Ambrose” Submitted by Edel Cowan It’s Crunch Time for the cast and crew of Act One Productions Drama Club as there is only a few days left before the drama theaters begin (March 8-12 This is the club’s 25th year of drama – a great milestone for them. They are preforming “Desperate Ambrose” (by Donald Payton) a three-act 1880s western comedy farce. It involves two Eastern vaudeville comedians who were on their way to California. Their tickets and money has been stolen so they were kicked off the train and left in the desert. When they arrive in the town of Dead Man’s Gulch, a rough and tumble town in the West, a mistake in identity occurs. The hilarious antis of the performers will surely cause much laughter throughout the evening.

The 14 cast members taking to the stage this year involves: Dale Potapinski (Panhandle Jake) – is a 60 year old ex-prospector who is a grizzly, whiskered, easy-going bellhop/desk clerk.

Wes Smith (Ambrose Groves) – is a meek and mild-mannered young Easterner who is mistaken for Homer the Kid, the sure-shootin’ desperado of the West. Chad Peet (Bert Miller) – is Ambrose’s partner, also from the East. Tim Cowan (Sheriff Candel) – is the sheriff but alas and alack is the culprit who’s causin’ all the commotion. Parry Peet (Hoot Owl Pete) – is an old-time grizzly hombre. Dennis Joliceour (Stinkweed) – is Hoot Owl’s hireling who is a nonetoo-bright would-be rustler. Rachelle Smith (Nancy Martin) – is a pretty 21year old heroine. Diane Potapinski (Anne Martin) – is Nancy’s pretty 19-year old sister who has a mind of her own. Joey Mailhiot (Tillie) – is the sister’s loud and brusque chaperone and traveling companion who is in her mid-fifties, unmarried and has her eye set on Jake. Shanna Carriere (Beth) – is a matronly western-type woman who takes the girls under her wing. Margaret Peet (Mrs. Sprool) – is a middle-aged, gossipy gadabout. Linda Potapinski (Lena) – is Mrs. Sprool’s teen-aged daughter. Lil Patton (Judge) – is the newly-elected judge. Donna Fraser and Lorraine Ferriss (extras) – are the stage-coach handlers.

There are still tickets available for the Dessert Theater (Wednesday) and

Rockets-Flyers series tied

Fast hockey and a lot of action characterized the evening of Feb. 28 as the Redvers Rockets battled with the Wawota Flyers in Big Six playoff action. The Rockets won 3-2, which tied the series 1-1.
