A White Bear Education Complex Christmas Kelly Running Observer Staff

The White Bear Education Complex hosted a Christmas Concert and feast on Wednesday, Dec. 21.

First up were the Kindergarten’s with “Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer” in an adorable performance.

Next the grades seven, eight, and nine classes performed “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” which was followed by the grade two class singing “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and “Jingle Bells.”

Junior Chief and Council performed a short skit: “Santa, You Need a New Suit.” Reindeer were trying to convince Santa to go with a new look.

The reindeer encouraged him, “Santa please choose a new suit! Mrs. Claus will think you look cute!” But, Santa let them know Mrs. Claus already thinks he’s cute.

Grades three and four then took to the stage to sing along to “What Does the Reindeer Say?” The group then danced the “Crazy Christmas Santa Dance” inviting the audience – who were very supportive – to stand up and dance along as well.

Students from grade 10, 11, and 12, then took to the stage to recite a poem by Robert Frost.

Grades five and six performed “Must Be Santa” and “Shake It Up” for the amassed crowd.

Shelaine Pinacie-Littlechief and Callie Standingready then read the classic poem, “ ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” by Clement Clarke Moore.

The performance came to a close with the very cute grade one class performing “Reindeer Pokey” and “Luckiest Christmas Tree.”

WBEC then hosted a Christmas Feast following the Christmas Concert as a way to wish everyone well during the holidays.

Locks lopped off for love Lynne Bell

A Carlyle mother’s battle with cancer is a tough journey, but Jacquie McConnell won’t be walking alone.

Jacquie’s children-daughter Jossalyn, 24 and son Brett, 21-along with several of their friends have-or will be-shaving their heads in tribute to the woman they all call “Mom.” Twenty-year-old Kyle Gudmundson of Carlyle says, “I’ve known Jacquie for the entire time I’ve lived in Carlyle. Her son Brett is my best friend and she’s almost like a parent to me.”

“I didn’t think twice about shaving my head in support of Jacquie,” added Gudmundson. “She’s a great person and she’s been extremely strong through this and I love her.”

“Mom was diagnosed a while ago,” says Jossalyn. “She was in pain with what was thought to be a bulged disc in her back.

The pain had gotten really bad, so she was admitted to the hospital in Regina for an MRI, where she found out it wasn’t a back problem, but a tumour.”

“The tumour turned out to be cancerous, and so she has to have both radiation and chemo.”

“Mom was always getting her hair done,” adds Jossalyn.

“So I can relate to how hard it must be for her to lose her hair.

Shaving my head and collecting donations was just my way of helping out.”

Prior to shaving her head, Jossalyn collected donations totalling $3,410 for the purchase of her mother’s wig and for the “Look Good, Feel Better” Foundation, “which helps women look and feel their best during cancer treatment.”

“My mom is the kind of person who would do anything for anyone,” says Jossalyn. “She’s an amazing person who is always going out of her way to take care of other people. I just wanted to show her that other people-not just her familywanted to show her their support and to take care of her.”

“In fact, she was really worried about me and how I’d react to having my head shaved. I’m a hairstylist and a makeup artist and anyone who knows me knows that I’m always changing my hair. Once I got my hair cut pretty short and I wasn’t happy with it,” says Jossalyn. “My mom mentioned that and I told her this time would be completely different, because I’m doing this to support her.

“I told her: ‘It’s different this time. I’m not going to be upset because I’m shaving my head for you. It’s just hair.’”

On Monday, Dec. 21, the trio visited Carlyle’s New Dimension Hair Studio, where stylist Alicia Brown did their new ‘dos, while Facetiming Jacquie in Regina.

“It was definitely a very touching moment for me,” says Brown. “The McConnells are like a second family to me and Jacquie’s like my second mom.”

“It was an honour to do it.”

Jacquie’s son, Brett says of his time in the stylists’s chair: “It’s hard for a woman to lose her hair, and I would do anything just to support my mom.”

“We just want her to keep on fighting. I love her. We all do.”

Official Honour: Manor’s Kruz Wilson named Baseball Sask’s Top Junior Umpire Lynne Bell

Kruz Wilson recently took his place among the province’s top baseball officials when he was awarded the 2016 Lou Slotsve Junior Umpire of the Year Award by Baseball Sask at the Baseball Sask Awards in Regina. The grade 12 student and Manor resident says of the honour: “I couldn’t believe it actually.”

“But it was pretty sweet after all of the umpires congratulated me. Because I got the junior award, I was the youngest one there.”

The eighteen-year-old has already officiated at over 200 games during his career and was selected to umpire at the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games in Estevan. And on Dec. 9, 2016, he learned he is selected to umpire softball at the upcoming 16U Boys and Girls Western Canadian Championships in Brandon, MB. “”I feel very honoured to get this opportunity at the age of 18,” says Wilson. “I never thought I’d get selected for this at such a young age,” adding that being named Junior Umpire of the Year by Baseball Sask was equally surprising.

“Kevin Culy from Estevan nominated me for the Junior Umpire award,” says Wilson. “He was our crew chief during provincials and he was one of my instructors. This year, umpiring at the Summer Games in Estevan was one of my favourite baseball memories. I did three or four games a day and I got to do the plate during the bronze medal game, calling the balls and strikes.”

“I did the gold medal 10 and under game behind the plate there, too.”

“I look at those games and you have to be on your ‘A’ game,” he adds. “ You just have to make sure you do the right thing. I look at it the same way whether it’s a minor ball game or a provincial game. It’s the same mindset.You’ve got to go there, have the right mindset and talk about the game with your partner and be professional.”

One of Wilson’s co-umpires during the games in Estevan was his mother, Alana Wilson.

“We’ve done a couple of games together,” he says.

“It’s like umpiring with any other partner. We’re there to do our job.”

“But I do have to thank my parents,” adds Wilson.

“My mom is an umpire and my dad’s not as into baseball, but they’ve both really supported me.”

“At the awards ceremony in Regina, Bill Wyatt- who is my umpire chief and mentor- surprised me by being there,” says Wilson. “I didn’t know he was going to be at the awards. He does so much to mentor young umpires. If it wasn’t for him, we all wouldn’t be umpires.”

“And Craig Savill has helped me a lot, too. I also have him to thank. He’s a big part of my baseball and I do a lot of Saskota with him. He’s done a lot.”

“You pick up stuff like how to handle pressure and how confident they are out there.”

“And that’s the big thing,” adds Wilson. “They’re all older than me, so I’ve learned a lot from how they handle things and how calm they are.”

Wilson started his baseball career as a second baseman, playing in Manor and later, in Carlyle.

“I started playing ball in Manor when I was pretty young,” he says. “Then later, I played in Carlyle. I started when I was five or six years old. I played until grade 11 and now I only umpire.”

Wilson says his interest in officiating started when he was very young.

“I just love it,” he says. “And actually, what made me take an interest in being an umpire was listening to them when I was young. I really liked listening to them yell strikes and stuff.”

“So I started taking courses and getting my levels and when I was 12-years-old, I umpired my first game,” adds Wilson. “It was a little kids’ game and Bill Wyatt was there. Bill would always be there and help us.”

“He was our mentor.”

Wyatt says: “Kruz is a great kid. He’s very confident and I appreciate working with him.”

Wilson says that his confidence- like anything else-

came with time, experience and practice.

“It all starts before you get to the diamond,” he says.

“If it’s a big game- like the playoffs- the intensity level is a lot higher.”

“When I was 16-years-old, I did my first senior game. It was nerve-wracking and I just didn’t want to make a wrong call. But after the first call, I settled right down and said ‘I can do this.’”

“Before that, when I was younger, you’re just nervous. But all of the parents around here are respectful, so that helped a lot. But in one city, during a Triple A game, the ball was more competitive and the parents are pretty into it. That showed me that sometimes, some parents think they know more than we do, but you can’t let it get to you.”

“When you hear someone talking to you as an umpire, you just have to tune it out,” continues Wilson.

“You just have to know the book and be confident. The older, I get, I realize I’m out here to do a job- and I do it.”

“Usually, I try to get to a game about 45 minutes before it starts,” says Wilson. “When my partner shows up, we go over the game plan and different situations that could possibly come up.”

“I want to be the best I can be and I actually like doing every age group. It’s all a blast.”

“My dream is to go as high as I can and I want to do Western Canada Baseball,” adds Wilson. “I want to be able to do that. I never thought I’d get this far as an umpire.”

“He’s got a great future,” says Wyatt.

“It’s a different year at the food bank,” says Carlyle & District Food Bank chairperson, Darlene Burnett.

“The number of requests we receive for food hampers has doubled since the fall,” she continues. “In November, we went from an average of 30 requests in the previous months to over 60 in November, and over 100 in December, with Christmas. This year, in both January and February, we’ve filled requests for over 60 hampers

Longtime volunteer and past chair of the food bank, Marg Krenz agrees. “This is the busiest it has ever been at the food bank, and I think it’s because so many people are out of work.”

The food bank-which has been in operation since 1989-serves communities throughout the area, with its headquarters located in the Carlyle United Church, which provides the registered charity space, rent-free.

Volunteers meet there on the third Wednesday of each month to assemble and distribute food hampers.

Recipients arrange to receive hampers through food bank volunteers, as well as through referrals from churches and social workers.

Hampers are filled with non-perishables. On the morning of pick-up day, Carlyle Food World employees deliver fresh food items such as milk, bread, and fresh vegetables.

“We have no storage for fresh food,” says volunteer Myrla Holland. “So we really appreciate Food World’s employees delivering our food order and donated food and carrying it in for us.

Arcola students bring cheer to the community Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Arcola School’s annual Christmas concert brought cheer and Christmas spirit to the community as they performed twice on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

They first took to the stage for an afternoon show at 1 p.m. and then at 7 p.m. that night.

The pre-Kindergarten class took to the stage performing “The Wheels on the Bus” and “Jingle Bells.”

Kindergartens performed “A Christmas Acrostic” and “10 Little Elves.”

Grade ones – all sporting long beards – performed “Santa’s Workshop” and “Hairy Christmas.”

Grade twos recited “The Grinch” and then performed “Welcome Christmas.”

Grade threes then took to the stage with a Christmas dance to “Jingle Bell Rock,” and the song “Old Toy Trains.”

Grades four/five had the crowd laughing along to their song and dance: “Santa’s Getting Fit for Christmas.”

Grades five/six performed the tune, “Feliz Navidad.”

And finally the Panther Reading Club took to the stage reciting a poem.

Both performances – the afternoon and evening – were packed with friends and family of the youth.

It was a fun way for the students to end the year and showcase the performances they had been working so hard on.

Principal Ron Wardrope thanked everyone for coming out and to the teachers and students for their efforts in preparing the Christmas concert.

An existential crisis

It’s a New Year again. When people say time flies, well… it definitely does. In 2007 I graduated high school and 10 years seems like a very long time ago, although at the same time it feels like just yesterday.

Memories are weird like that I suppose.

As time flies by… I recentKelly Running ly found myself wondering, Observer Staff “Why?” Haha, I’m fine I promise, but I found myself asking the questions of why we’re here and what is the point? I found myself having an existential crisis and with what I figured was good reason.

My friend, a science minded individual said that biologically we’re on Earth to ensure the human race continues, just like any other animal out there. To me, that didn’t feel like the “be all, end all” reason though; it was much too simple. You literally live and then die, then nothing.

She agreed with me, it didn’t actually give you a meaning of life that made you feel like your life was making a difference. So, she continued, saying that her purpose is to do something worthwhile, to be kind to people, and make a change in some form. Those efforts would be her legacy and the ripple effects would hopefully take hold in the world.

Again, this didn’t really answer anything, it just meant that while we’re here we might as well be good to each other.

As I spoke with her I realized that this question actually ties into religion. Religion actually offers an answer; the point of life is to live in such a way that your soul will find its way to Heaven or Enlightenment or any variation thereof.

Regardless what religion you look at, there is always something after death and it gives a person’s life purpose because they are living with a goal to achieve.

In turn though, like my friend explained, she set her own goals to achieve in her life and said to me that we can create our own purpose.

It’s difficult to do though, to give your life a worthwhile purpose, a goal of what you want to achieve because humans have a tough time holding themselves accountable. There always seems like there’s more accountability if you’re being held to standards that more people are in on. For example, support when going to the gym to lose weight becomes easier to do in the beginning when you have other people attempting to achieve the same goal. After awhile you find yourself able to go on your own, but there’s a bump in the road for people attempting to get themselves there to start with.

I feel like this is why, in life, you tend to gravitate to certain people. You find a commonality with someone based on their life views. You can disagree, but at the end of the day when you look at your life goals, they will be similar in some form.

It’s an interesting thing to think about and for me the question is open ended, I really don’t think there is a universal answer to the point of life. I think each person finds their way and develops their goals in life, whether based on religious teachings or moral teachings, etc…

For me, I’m not sure if I’m really making a difference in the world, but I think I will keep on trying because otherwise, really, what is the point?

So, for 2017, go out there and live your best life.

Be happy and aim to make a difference.

We aren’t like that in real life... are we We’ll hear it many times in the coming days: “Happy New Year!”. It’s a greeting, a wish, perhaps even a reflex, but nevertheless it is the words many will use in their encounters for a couple of weeks.

The idea of newness is so exciting. A new baby. A new car. A new job…and yes, a new year.

Not nearly as exciting as those events will be a crop of new Shelley Luedtke TV shows as networks roll out new concepts and mid-season replacements. I am not someone who gets terribly excited about new TV shows. I have my current favourites and unless a show is suggested to me by someone who knows me well, I generally don’t take the time to check out new programs.

Many are gone as quickly as they premiere. So I stick to my tried and true that are typically set in hospitals or courtrooms -- although I do harbour the guilty pleasure of a program I don’t like admitting to…but I watch…containing the tag line “Outwit, Outplay, Outlast.”

New TV shows are given a pretty small window of time in which to find an audience before the networks determine their fate. No sooner are new shows launched when word of their cancellation follows. If a program hasn’t garnered anticipated ratings within its first few weeks, its run comes to a quick conclusion. There’s no real time to build up an audience or test it in different time slots.

After two or three episodes a new show could very well be seen for the final time. Doesn’t really seem fair does it? Thank goodness we aren’t like that in real life.

someone new, our first impressions can be formed by merely a quick glance, perhaps as brief as three seconds. Can you imagine that? We determine our impression of someone in just a matter of seconds.

Surely we give people more time than that, don’t we?

Studies of our behavior indicate that a passing glance at someone’s physical features, their clothing, body language and their first few words to us will set the tone for our interaction with that individual. We integrate this information and in a matter of seconds we have formed our opinion of that person.

But how many times have our first impressions of someone turned out to be entirely true? How about entirely false? Many people claim as one of their positive qualities that they are a “good judge of people.” Hopefully those judgments have been formed based on multiple things and not simply the impressions of a singular encounter.

I will freely admit that there have been times my first impression of someone has turned out to be erroneous. And thank goodness that the friends I treasure today gave me more than three seconds to make a good impression on them.

As you pass people on the street this week, or attend a meeting, or encounter someone in customer service, consider what you are basing your impressions on, and what they in turn are surmising about you. In a rush-to-judgement culture in a fast-paced world we need to think about all the potential relationships we may be missing out on.

Your future favourite TV show needs more than three episodes to convince you to make time for it. Your future friends deserve more than three seconds to make a potential impact on your life.

Let’s be open to the new things that this new year might bring, and let’s be generous in our time to let their effect fully settle in. That’s my outlook.

Dancing with the wind

The day was done. The lights were out – except for the laser Christmas lights out on the lawn. Red and green dots shone in through the windows and adorned interior walls of the house; a new addition to my decorating scheme that doubles as a Christmassy night light for the month of DecemJocelyn Hainsworth ber.

I lay awake listening to the prairie wind roaring through the maples, pushing snow around the corner of the house where it would lets it sift to a stop in a bank under the bedroom window. If I got up I could watch it build in the light of the full moon but I snuggled down deeper in the covers and continued to listen to the lusty baritone voice of the wind singing his winter song.

Always on the lookout for subjects to write about, my mind turned to trying to describe this constant presence in our prairie life. The power it can convey, the destruction it can create, the softness of its caress: all aspects of a relationship we love to hate, and hate to love.

I found myself thinking of the wind outside my window as a masculine entity. With the power

that it yields the muscle structure of a male body comes to mind – brawny shoulders, thick neck, solid torso, and powerful legs. The timbre of its voice also lends itself to the lower tones of a male – the roar outside being just one example. But even when the sound reaches a scream-like pitch, as it can when it has the right conditions to play with, it’s not a frightened shriek but rather a battle cry that spreads fear and intimidation.

It wouldn’t be fair to only describe him as a beast, though. If he can be considered male, I thought to myself, let’s take it a step further; would he fit into a suitor’s clothing? The expression “dancing with the wind” came to my mind, closely followed with the words “romanced by the wind” and I knew I had hit on something. There was something in that admission of a physical bond with the wind that at least one prairie person felt rang true. I wondered; am I alone?

The prairie wind shapes our world. Our wild windswept landscape is dotted with older buildings ... all leaning east. Likewise the signposts and anything else we’ve tried to keep upright. We have learned not to leave fresh-tilled soil open to the wind or we will find it in powdery drifts along the fence lines.

Like a beach bully the wind will pick up sand and throw it in our faces, tangle and pull at our

hair, and steal any clothing or possessions not nailed down. It will take the tiny flame of a match and carry it off to wreak catastrophic destruction.

I can turn a simple little boat ride into a life and death situation in a matter of minutes.

But he’s not always the brute. Sometimes he shows his artistic side – forcing snow through trees and fences to form amazing sculptures, showing them off in galleries of brilliant sunshine and long blue shadows. He can sandblast weathered wood, polishing the natural grain to a high sheen, and he is also into dance – his own expression of ballet – stirring whole fields of grain to dip and toss, undulate and curtsey at his whim, never tiring of his wild music.

Our interaction with him is more personal though, or at least mine is. His breath can be so much gentler – cooling my skin on a hot summer’s day, lifting my hair away from my sweaty scalp, wrapping me in a firm hug of pressure against my clothing, even playfully nipping at my nose on a frosty day.

Did the natives of this land used to call him ‘Brother Wind’? Or was that just Hollywood’s invention? It doesn’t matter, I am born and bred Prairie – I feel a kinship with the wind.

And with that I rolled over one more time and let him lullaby me to sleep.

Happy New Year Can you believe that 2016 is over and 2017 is here! I can hardly believe that the last 365 days blew past as quickly as it did. The months were a blur but we enjoyed the year very much. It seems we do the same old thing every year but even if it is the same, the differences make it that much more fun.

It was especially fun because Krystyn Gillies at the start of the year, our baby became a toddler when she turned a whole year old. She was walking already but it was such a fun age. She loved to play with her dogs and cat in the house when it was still cold out but when things warmed up and we started calving, she LOVED being outside.

We planted our garden when it warmed up and that little piece of dirt kept us outside most of the summer. After calving was all finished up, it was time to get everything ready for our bull riding event and that made the time go by for sure. It was another huge success this year and we were able to make a great donation to the community.

After that was all finished, we spent the summer in the garden as well as just playing outside as a family. The toddler spent the afternoons and evenings running through the corn stalks chasing her favourite kitty. If she wasn’t doing that, she was taming the chickens by feeding them blades of grass through the wire mesh of their outdoor run.

We spent a couple of weeks at the camp we volunteer at, finding it a different experience with a mobile child who didn’t want to get off any of the horses she was able to “ride”. I found myself leading in a cabin this summer which is something I wasn’t planning on doing, but enjoyed nonetheless. We were finally able to start haying after a very wet spring and early summer but that didn’t dampen our spirits.

This fall, which came so quickly it felt like, consisted of canning and freezing the bounty from the garden. When we weren’t doing that, we were baling hay, until November it seemed. My dad would cut it, I would rake it and my husband would roll it up in the baler. If it wasn’t rain slowing us down, it was a broken machine or it was just too tough and wouldn’t dry.

When that was all said, and done and brought into the hay yard finally, we seemed to have good enough weather to get the yard all cleaned up, the garden cleaned out and the chickens settled into the big coop. We lucked out with the weather but when the snow finally came, it came with a ven-

geance.

We have already had our fair share of frozen machines and snow drifts taller than many of the vehicles on the farm. Thankfully, spring is coming, even if it is quite a way off just yet.

The year 2016 was a lot of fun, even though it had its share of tricky spots, we conquered them all and even a little bit of sickness at the end of the year but came out the other side with smiles on our faces and love in our hearts.

I really hope you found the year to be a blessing; you were able to spend time with your loved ones

and enjoyed the things you like to do or see. This time of year, I know it is easy to carry on with life and not count your blessings or appreciate the things and people you do and see every day.

I urge you to really look around and spend time with loved ones you don’t get to see very often or don’t live close to. Even if you just pick up the phone, get in touch because you never know what next year will bring and regrets this time of year always seem to stand out that much more.

From my family to yours, I pray you have a lovefilled, happy and healthy 2017!

Redvers earns win in close game Gaudet would move into position at 13:41 to earn a goal off of an assist by Gavin Martel.

The Cougars went hard creating opportunities, but were unable to get past the Rockets’ goalie Thomas Bauche, while Carlyle’s Josh Hohn prevented any more goals ending with Redvers ahead 4-3.

It was a great game and drew out tons of fans who packed the rink in Redvers.

That night also saw Bienfait take on Wawota, with the Wawota Flyers winning over the Coalers 9-4; Oxbow also took down Carnduff with a 7-2 win.

The Carnduff Red Devils remain at the top of the East Division with 17 points, but the Redvers Rockets are closing in as they sit with 16 points. The Wawota Flyers are not far behind with 13 points and with Oxbow’s win on the Dec. 23, they now have 8 points.

In the West Division, the Bienfait Coalers are at the top with 17 points, while the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings sit in second with 15 points. The Midale Mustangs sit with seven points and the Carlyle Cougars trail with four points.

With a break for Christmas and New Years, the next action will be on Friday, Jan. 6, with Carnduff in Wawota, Yellow Grass in Redvers, and Carlyle in Midale.

The Carlyle PureChem Cougars met the Redvers Rockets in Redvers on Friday, Dec. 23.

The Cougars came out on fire as their quick movement of the puck led to three goals in the first period. The first was scored by Brett Turgeon who was assisted by Joel Mack. The second came from Mark Shaw, assisted by Ben Johnstone. The third goal was marked up on the board by Cooper Fox, assisted by Mark Shaw and Kelly Currie.

Up 3-0 in the first the Rockets earned their first goal with 1:07 up on the clock by captain Jordan Miller, assisted by Craig Gaudet and Koltyn Miller.

Gaining their first goal of the game and a little bit of momentum heading into the second period.

In the second period the teams battled. The Redvers Rockets scored a quick one about two minutes in as Koltyn Miller hit the net with a shot assisted by Jordan Miller and Kevin Mann. The Rockets kept the pressure on and capitalized on an opportunity late in the second to tie the game.

Francis Lamotte found the back of the net with an assist by Koltyn Miller and Devin Wolensky.

Heading into the third the teams were tied 3-3.

Carlyle & District Lions Club fundraiser celebrates 25 years, over $500,000 raised Lynne Bell

The Carlyle & District Lions Club held its 25th annual supper, raffle and auction Thursday, March 3 in the Carlyle Memorial Hall. This event has raised over $500,000 for local causes during the 25 years the Lions have hosted.

Pictured is event chairperson and Lions member, Wayne Wilson, with a new addition to the event, a balloon auction. “We always try to keep it fresh and we’re always on the look-out for new members,” says Wilson. “We had a few new faces attending this year and we’re always willing to welcome more.”

The Carlyle & District Lions Club celebrated 25 years and over $500,000 in funds raised at their annual supper, auction and raffle, held Thursday, March 3 at the Carlyle Memorial Hall.

Lions member and event chair, Wayne Wilson said this year’s event was a success before it started, due to the support of area communities.

“It’s our 25th and the donations came in fabulous,” says Wilson.

“We’ve got a full house with just a few shy of 200 tickets sold, and everybody is having a good time.”

“All of the money we raise with this event goes to local community causes and over our 25year history, we’ve raised over $500,000 total from this event alone.”

According to Wilson, the Carlyle Lions Club held the first fundraiser of this kind in 1992 in conjunction with the Estevan branch of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation. Four years later, the Lions became sole organizers of the event.

The Lions have also made changes in an effort to distribute funds more effectively and efficiently. Currently, they ask those seeking funding from the Club to submit an application form that states the amount of money they are seeking.

“Now, we ask organizations requesting funds to submit an application to the Lions,” says Wilson. “We ask them to tell us what they need and it’s a much better system, because they know what they need and how much it will cost, better than we do. That way, we’re not overfunding a worthy cause and underfunding another.”

Lions member Myrla Holland says that the club has also contributed in non-monetary ways throughout its history.

“I went through all of the old ledgers from our 50th anniversary a few years ago,” she says. “The Lions

have also done things like deliver Meals on Wheels, hold birthdays at Moose Mountain Lodge, collected used eyeglasses, lots of things like that.”

“Our motto is ‘We Serve’ and for 53 years, this club has done just that,” adds Holland.

This year’s fundraiser kicked off with a social hour, which gave attendees the opportunity to peruse the hundreds of auction, silent auction, raffle and door prizes on display.

After a turkey and pork supper catered by Linda Chapman and Eileen Corrigan, the evening’s auction was once again conducted by world champion auctioneer and hometown boy, Ward Cutler, who has donated his time and talent to the fundraiser for 21 years.

“It’s always good to come home,” says Cutler. “Over the years, I’ve auctioned honey, gold and eggs here-just to name a few. And this year, I’m auctioning some balloons-so I’m ready to get started.”

After the hundreds of live auction, silent auction, raffle prizes and door prizes were distributed, event organizer Wilson declared the evening a success.

“Everyone really came through for us-with their donations, with their attendance, and in all the many, many ways they support us and their communities,” says Wilson. “And we saw some new faces here tonight, which is great. We couldn’t do any of it without their support and we’re very grateful to them all.”

Simonne Therrien of Carlyle attended the fundraiser for the first time and said, “I would definitely go again. It was wonderful to see all of the people there to support our community-things like the pool and the rink-especially during these difficult economic times.”

Dale Gudmundson, a veteran attendee, agrees, saying simply, “It was awesome.”

Dan D’Autremont remains Cannington’s provincial representative Dan D’Autremont has been re-elected to represent the voters of Cannington with a flood of support. D’Autremont with the Sask Party – which has formed a majority government for a third term under Premier Brad Wall – received 6,375 votes.

Nathaniel (J.D.) Cole ran for the NDP receiving 667 votes, Kurt Schmidt with the PC party received 248 votes, Tierra Lemieux with the Green Party and Patrick Dennie with the Liberal party each received 133 votes.

The Midget Cougars found themselves in an intense league final on Monday, April 4, against the Carnduff Red Devils. With the series tied going into the competition, the Cougars had home ice advantage.

In a close, high scoring battle, the Cougars came out on top during sudden death overtime winning 8-7 over the Red Devils.

Devin Stewart earned four goals, finding the back of the net for both the first one scored of the night and the last. Reaching the back of the net twice in the first period Stewart was assisted by Cooper Fox and Josh Brown for the first and Jett BigEagle put up an assist for the second.

The second period saw both teams score three goals each. For Carlyle, Dalton Loustel put two away with assists by Jacob Chalus and Jake MacLeod for one and then Macleod again and Jory Dyck. Cooper Fox posted a goal in the second as well with help from Devin Stewart and Jett BigEagle.

Heading into the third the score read 5-3. Carnduff came out on fire in the third scoring a total of four points, while Carlyle struggled to keep up. Cooper Fox found the back of the net again with help from Josh Brown. Then with less than two minutes left in the game, Carlyle pulled their goalie for a six on five opportunity, which paid off with Devin Stewart finding the back of the net with 1:09 left in the period tying up the game.

The last minute ran down and the teams headed into sudden death overtime. With 10 minutes on the clock, the teams faced off at centre ice. Quickly the Cougars took the puck into Carnduff’s end. With quick passing in the zone the puck landed on Josh Brown’s stick – a defenseman on the leftside - who took a shot, which was deflected in by Devin Stewart. Cougars win!

Both teams played extremely well and put on a fantastic game for those in attendance.

On Wednesday, May 4, Carlyle’s Steve Schultz received a phone call from Ryan Benjamin of Jewel Energy, who was trying to gather relief supplies to aid the displaced citizens of firestricken Fort McMurray, Alberta.

“Ryan was going to gather a load to take up to the company’s head office in Red Deer,” says Schultz. “From there, they’d get the supplies to wherever they were needed.”

“I put something out on Facebook and sent some emails. We weren’t able to reach everybody in such a short time, but really, the response was overwhelming.”

“Ryan asked me if local businesses could contribute,” says Schultz, who is president of the Carlyle Chamber of Commerce. “We had a tight timeline, but our community really stepped up to the plate, and by early Sunday morning, we had enough stuff to fill a 28-foot cargo trailer, ready to go.”

“There are just so many businesses and people to thank,” says Schultz. “But logistically, Carlyle RV & Leisure and Southern Plains Co-op in Carlyle stepped in as drop-off points and that was a huge help.”

“Our big back room here in the (Pharmasave) store was full in a very short timewith things like diapers, water, canned food, baby food, pet food, toothbrushes, toiletries and so much more.”

Although the drive for donations was pulled together in a very short period of time, local businesses, groups, and individuals responded generously. bottles of water, diapers, toiletries, pet food, clothing-really, anything people would need,” adds Schultz. “The Dickens committee contributed a bunch of clothing that was all cleaned, sorted and ready to go. Our customers heard about it and some gave us cash and said, ‘Here, buy anything you need.’ So we took the cash over to The Bargain Shop and bought towels and kids’ underwear.”

Derrick Edwards, Branch Manager of Southern Plains Co-op witnessed the same thing in his store. “When we were approached and asked if we could round up stuff to send and to be a drop-off point, we were happy to do it. Our customers made cash donations and most just told us to purchase what

was needed most. Our staff donated the funds from their can deposits and I think everyone just wishes the people of Fort McMurray all the best. It’s hard to imagine being in that situation and really, we were more than happy to help out. Anything we can do, we’re happy to do.”

Martin Tourand of Ron’s The Work Wear Store in Carlyle agrees and says of his contribution of cases of socks: “It’s a terrible situation and we’re just doing what we hope anyone would do for someone in this situation. We thought about what might really be needed, and I know everyone else did, too.”

Redvers Elementary School presents a musical Merry Christmas

A sea of Santa hats filled the Redvers School gymnasium as students from kindergarten to Grade 6 prepared to take the stage for their annual Christmas concert. Young performers delighted parents and friends with selections ranging from rhyme to rap. The show took place on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

We will be closed to celebrate Christmas and the New Year with our families from December 24 to January 3.

Bringing home the medals: local athletes find success at SHSAA Provincial Track and Field Kelly Running Observer Staff

It was an extremely successful showing for the South East within the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association (SHSAA) Provincial Track and Field meet in Regina on June 3 and 4. The district earned a ranking of 8th this year and earned the award of Most Improved. This title comes with the efforts of numerous youth from the area.

Congratulations to all the athletes who competed!

Arcola Athletes Shania Taylor, a Senior girl in grade 12, earned a gold medal in shot put (11.24m) and also finished 10th in javelin (28.73m).

After a late ride home following competition athletes were exhausted, yet excited as they received a police escort to the school where a group of supportive family and friends were awaiting to congratulate the team. They found a lot of individual success at Provincials, but together accomplished a second place finish within the 2A classification of schools Combined Team Scores with 146 points. Abigail Birch finished seventh in the 80m hurdles (13.32s) as a Midget girl and contributed to the South East Midget girls 4*100m relay’s fourth place finish (54.04s).

She was joined on the relay team by Melissa Ellis who also placed sixth in Midget girls’ javelin (26.47m).

G.F.K. Athletes Gordon F. Kells students found a very successful provincial track competition with Karli Colpitts earning two gold medals, Taylor Sargent earning a silver and a bronze, Jorja Bendtsen earning a bronze, and the entire Carlyle team earning their school the 2A classification of schools Combined Team Scores with 146 points. Points for this are earned for placing in the top 16 in an event, which all of the G.F.K. athletes achieved.

Colpitts competed as a Junior girl, going home with a gold medal in discus (33.65m) and a gold medal in shot put (10.39m), as well as an 11th place finish in javelin (27.28m).

Sargent earned a silver medal in 80m hurdles (12.35s) as a Junior girl and contributed to a bronze medal in the 4*100m relay (52.67s). The relay also included fellow Carlyle athlete Jorja Bendtsen along with Bronwyn Douglas of Carnduff and Morgan

Fichter of Estevan.

In addition to Bendtsen helping earn the bronze in the 4*100m she placed 6th overall in junior girls hurdles (13.19s).

Gracie Schutz had a great showing in the Midget girls category. She earned 11th in the 200m dash (28.05s), seventh in the 400m dash (1:03.57s), ninth in the 100m dash (13.46s), and contributed to fourth place finishes for both the 4*100m relay (54.04s) and the 4*400m relay (4:20.60s).

Tucker Sharp in the Midget boys 3,000m run (11:21.21s) finished 16th.

Halen Duhaime finished fourth in shot put (11.85m) and 11th in discus (29.04m) as a Junior boy.

Sam Matthewson earned 13th in Junior boys discus (29.04m).

Kyle Sargent finished 10th in the 200m dash (24.21s) and eighth in the 400m dash (54.24s) in the Senior boys category.

Alex Messer finished 15th in triple jump (11.25m).

Schools held their elementary Christmas concert in the evening of December 20. There were many parents and grandparents from Alida whom attended a concert either in Redvers or Oxbow. It’s so nice to see these young people so excited to preform at their concerts and it defiantly helps put one in the Christmas spirit. Wednesday was then the last day of school for this year and the Christmas holidays are in full swing. Enjoy this holiday season and remember classes’ resumes on January 4, 2017.

Lacie Nilsen, Calgary arrived home on December 19 to visit and spend the holidays with her parents, Shelly and Tim Cowan and sister Ainsley. She attended Ainsley’s concert. Lacie also spent time with her sister Kelsey Rydberg in Estevan and with other friends in the area and later spent Christmas with family in Minot before returning to Estevan on December 24 with Kelsey.’

The Alida community extends sincere sympathy to Neil and Karol McIntyre and family on the death of his sister, Marlene Bayliss of Carnduff, who passed away on December 21, 2016, at the age of 73 years. Condolences are also extended to all members of the Bayliss and McIntyre families. A service to celebrate Marlene’s life was held December 27 at Carnduff United Church with interment at Carnduff Cemetery.

Jody, Jill Junk and boys Jaxon and Jace of Sylvan Lake arrived December 22 to spend the holidays with his parents Gary and Brenda Junk.

They also spent some time visiting the Bartolf family in Oxbow and they also spent time visiting with Grandma Dot Girard in Estevan before returning home.

Faye Walker spent from December 22-27 in Saskatoon enjoying Christmas with her daughter Deidra, Jeff Nickle and family Olivia, Abigail, Claire and Piper.

Jeff Cowan, Regina spent the Christmas holidays (December 23-27) visiting with his parents, Gray and Edel Cowan. He also spent time visiting with his brother Tim, Shelly and Ainsley as well as with friends in the area.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan travelled to

Minot December 23 to spend Christmas Eve with the Nilsen family before returning to Alida later that evening to beat the coming storm and to spend Christmas Day with the Cowan family.

Spending Christmas Day at the Cowan Farm with Gray and Edel were Jeff Cowan (Regina), Tim, Shelly and Ainsley. Because of the storm Joyce and Jackie George were unable to come to the farm.

Spending Christmas with Kris Potapinski were his parents Dale and Linda, Aunt Carol and Uncle Alvin Wegmann (Calgary), Aunt Elaine Potapinski and her son Kent Nagorski (Winnipeg), Uncle Allan Potapinski (Gainsborough) and his daughter Dionne and husband Frank Deere (Winnipeg), Ihor and Ynna Tkachenko (Carnduff).

Parry, Lynette Peet and boys Wendal and Thomas spent Christmas with her sister Amber Holland and Travis Brown at Loreburn, SK. Chad, Samatha Peet and boys Hudson and Lincoln spent Christmas with her parents Bryan and Lori Hull at Preecevile. On Monday, December 26 they all travelled to Saskatoon where they met up with their sister Joleen Hoffman and boys Conner and Cole (Viking, AB), and also with their sister Patti, Monty Monchenko and girls Claire and Alice (Estevan).

On December 27 Brian and Margaret Peet met in Saskatoon to spend time with the whole family before they all returned to their respective homes on Wednesday, December 28.

What a Christmas we had – a real down-toearth old fashioned snow blizzard hint our area sometime in the wee early hours on Christmas Day. It began with a little snow falling Christmas Eve and by Christmas morning it was a real snowstorm.

We ended up snowed in and had to wait for snow blower to come dig us out before we could move.

Missed some family members at the Christmas meal – oh well better safe than sorry, they’ll come on another day. However Old Santa made it okay, storm or not, nothing holds him back. He was extra generous to our family – he even left me a miserable cold (he could have taken it and left out there in cyber space somewhere) – oh well I’ll survive.

By Linda Wegner In I818, composer and organist, Franz Xaver Gruber, and lyricist, Father Joseph Mohr, worked together to produce what is probably one of the world’s most beloved Christmas carols. Part of the beautiful refrain we know as Silent Night goes like this, “Holy infant so tender and mild; Sleep in heavenly peace.”

In case you don’t already know the story, here’s a basic history of the carol: Gruber and Fr. Mohr collaborated to bring to the congregation a new song, one that could be sung at

Midnight Mass, accompanied by a guitar instead of the traditional church organ. According to various accounts, it had recently been discovered that the organ was not working - some accounts say that its innards had been eaten by rats –but whatever the cause, the men pooled their giftings and gave their congregation and the world this beautiful melodic version of the Christmas story. From the small Austrian town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg came what UNESCO declared in 2011 to be a tangible

cultural heritage.

The thought of peace, let alone heavenly peace, has captured my heart and mind during these final days of 2016. Given the atrocities of Syria, the scourge of drug overdose deaths, the explosion of road-rage and gun-related killings and even the trials of every day living, my heart cries for His reign in our lives and our world. If I have a prayer for 2017 it would be this: “Come Lord Jesus, instil your heavenly peace in our individual hearts so that we would be agents of

The proposed Zoning Bylaw will implement land use policies, establish zoning districts, prescribe permitted and discretionary uses within each zoning district, establish a development permit process, prescribe a process for appeals and provide a provision for amendments. The proposed fees bylaw will establish fees for municipal services, including planning and development services.

Affected Land: The proposed bylaws will affect all land within the incorporated area of the Village.

Reason: The Official Community Plan will provide the Village with direction on development decisions and municipal goals. The Zoning Bylaw will help direct and manage growth and development within the Village. The fees bylaw will provide a schedule of fees to be charged for services provided by the Village.

Public Inspection: Any person may inspect the proposed bylaws at the Village office during normal office hours. Copies of the bylaws are available at cost.

Public Hearing: Council will hold a public hearing on Monday January 23rd, 2017 at 7:00pm. The public hearing will be held at the Village office in Kenosee Lake, SK. Any person or group that wants to comment on the proposed bylaws is welcome to attend or to submit comments prior to the meeting. Council will consider all comments received.

Carlyle paid tribute to one of its own as the Carlyle Airport was officially renamed the E.J. (Ted) Brady Regional Airport on Saturday, June 25.

Brady was a longtime mayor of Carlyle and not only served 22 years on town council and 15 years as mayor; he also served as president of the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) and as president of the Canadian Federation of Municipalities.

“Look at this another way,” says Carlyle mayor Wayne Orsted. “A mayor from a small town of less than 1,200 people at that time, representing cities like Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal at the federal level. That’s an accomplishment.”

“The airport here with paved runway, landing lights and directional beacon which makes (the airport) useable 24 hours a day probably wouldn’t be here without Mr. Brady,” added Orsted.

“Mr. Brady sought and obtained grants so there could be a 24-hour airport in this corner of the province outside of Weyburn and Estevan. You just

Brady’s daughter, Sherry Klatt of Regina-one of many family members in attendance-explained: “He wanted to involve the surrounding communities, especially White Bear and the lakes. When we were approached to what the comunity could do to recognize Dad, Mom imediately said, ‘Name the airport in his honour.’”

“Mom and Dad were travelling to the Maritimes for a Canadian Federation of Municipalities convention. Dad was president at the time. Federal minister Eugene Whelan was travelling with them... Anyway, he asked Dad what the government could do for a ‘hot shot small-town mayor.’”

“Dad was often teased about being a smalltown mayor from a community of 1,100 people, but representing cities like Vancouver and Montreal as well,” added Klatt. “Mr. Whelan commented that Dad definitely deserved some favour. Immediately, Dad replied: ‘A paved runway for our airport.’

Carlyle’s-and Canada’s-Carter Morrison returned home from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro to a hometown welcome in his honourfrom the front seat of a fire truck and accompanied by an RCMP and Carlyle Fire & Rescue escort, as well wishers lined Carlyle’s Main Street on Tuesday, August 9, mere hours after Carter’s return from Brazil.

Twelve-year-old Carter-along with Team Canada flagbearer and Olympic gold medallist, Rosie MacLennanled Team Canada into the 80,000-seat Rio’s Maracana stadium for the Rio 2016 opening ceremony, watched by a global audience numbering in the billions.

Carter was only one of five Canadian ambassadors chosen to represent Ronald McDonald Houses in Rio and one of nearly 100 McDonald’s Olympic Kids who represented the charity at the Games of the XXXI Olympiad.

Carter, who was born with achondroplasia, has spent time in Ronald McDonald Houses in each of the three prairie provinces since he was a baby.

He was the only young person in Canada who was asked outright to represent the charity in Rio.

The Moose Mountain Wado-Kai Karate Club were pleased to host a black belt grading in Carlyle – a first for the community. In the past members from the area have travelled to Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia to have their pre-grading and grading completed.

“This has been held a lot of different places across Canada, but it’s the first time black belt grading has happened here,” Jayson Humphries, a sensei with the Moose Mountain Club, explained. “It’s exciting for those going for a black belt and a new degree, but it’s also really exciting because we have a large group of brown belts from our home club here going through their pre-grading.”

A clinic was hosted on the Friday, Oct. 21, and the grading took place on Saturday, Oct. 22. There was a total of 17 people participating in the grading, nine were going for a new belt or degree, while others were there for pre-grading or for the workout and feedback from the Joseki Board (the grading panel).

The Joseki Board included six senseis who each had participants to focus on for the day and grade. The panel was led by Sensei Ron Mattie, an eighth degree black belt and Chief Instructor for the Shintani Wado Kai Karate Federation.

The Saturday began with a series of basic techniques: stances, transitions, blocks, strikes, and kicks. The group then moved into advanced basics, which strings together different combinations of techniques.

Kevin Dyck, a second degree black belt with the Moose Mountain Club, explained, “The evaluation is really based on speed, power, and spirit; they’re evaluating your energy and your intent with each technique. So, they’re judging your spirit in addition to the proper technique of each skill.”

“They will also make sure skills are done at two different levels, low and high, to see that control as well.

And that doesn’t mean it has to be a high kick to the head, each person is different and some aren’t able to kick quite that high, but as long as you’re showing two different levels.”

There were brown belt participants looking to earn a first degree black belt, while others looked to earn their second degree, third degree, and fifth degree black belts.

Before the day got underway the Joseki Board made one statement, “Today you will either pass and be given things to work on or we may tell you that we’re sorry and don’t think you’re ready for the next grade, but here are some things to work on. Either way you will have things to work on to improve moving forward.”

In addition to those visiting Carlyle for grading, numerous Moose Mountain Wado-Kai Karate members with brown belts participated in their pre-grading.

Born in l’Islet, Quebec, in 1825, Joseph-Elzéar Bernier descended from a long line of captains and shipbuilders.

Eager to follow in the footsteps of his seafaring family, the young Bernier took command of his own vessel at 17 and became the youngest captain to cross the Atlantic that same year.

At some point in his early career, the talented navigator fell in love with the idea of exploring the barren lands of Canada’s Far North. Bernier firmly believed that Canada needed to officially establish its sovereignty over the vast Arctic Archipelago. The British government had ceded this cluster of frozen islands to Canada in 1830, but Capt. Joseph-Elzéar Bernier on the bridge of the no measures were taken to secure Canadian ownership C.G.S. After unsuccessfully lobbying the government for years, he called upon Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier with the idea of a Canadian conquest of the North Pole—a more ostentatious plan that finally left Laurier convinced.

In 1904, the aspiring explorer purchased a German vessel with government funds. He then brought it to Quebec, renamed it the Arctic, filled it with supplies and got ready to embark on a historic voyage. At the last minute, however, there was a change of plans: instead of heading a glorious expedition to raise the Canadian flag at the North Pole, Bernier was sent to Hudson’s Bay on a yearlong patrol job.

At last, in 1906, Bernier left for the Arctic. His new mission, the one he’d hoped for from the start, was to claim Canadian ownership of the land above the North American continent. While Bernier’s arctic ambitions had long been viewed as trivial, recent talk south of the border about the United States’ northern boundaries certainly got the ball rolling in Ottawa.

Between 1906 and 1925, Joseph-Elzéar Bernier took 12 trips to the archipelago. From island to island, he and his crew catalogued topographical features, collected data, and held dozens of flagraising ceremonies to officialise Canadian ownership. Because establishing sovereignty meant implementing the law, Bernier also helped set up several RCMP posts in the region. He would go on to write in his memoirs that the northernmost of these posts, called Bache, was the true home of Santa Claus.

After dedicating nearly every one of his 82 years to conquering the whims of the seven seas, Joseph-Elzéar Bernier died peacefully in his Lévis, Quebec, home on Christmas Eve 1934. His strong will and meticulous work allowed Canada to claim ownership of some 740,000 square kilometres in the Far North. Today, what remains of the Arctic is on proud display in Bernier’s hometown of L’Islet, and the captain’s portrait accompanies a map of his expeditions on pages 12 and 13 of the Canadian passport.

That’s because the Vietnamese diaspora, including its Canadian segment, prefers to be represented by the South Vietnamese flag rather than by one reminiscent of the Communist Vietnam so many were forced to flee.

In 1975, after it became clear that South Vietnam would by taken over by Communist authorities, Canada admitted just over 5,600 Vietnamese people. Most of these first-wave immigrants were awarded entry based on socio-economic factors such as professional skills and fluency in English or French.

The second wave occurred after the harsh Communist regime took power. Between 1979 and 1981, residents of South Vietnam fled en masse to escape the violence and instability that plagued their home region. This wave of migrants was much more diverse than the first, comprising individuals from all walks of life. They are often called “boat people” in reference to the perilous journey taken by many aboard overcrowded vessels to reach foreign refugee camps from Vietnam. An estimated one-third of all refugees that attempted to escape by boat did not survive the trip. Canada, one of the main resettlement countries for Vietnamese refugees, welcomed more than 50,000 migrants during this phase. The United Nations awarded the Nansen Refugee Award to the people of Canada in 1986—the first and only time it was presented to citizens of a country—in recognition of efforts by the government and the people alike in helping Vietnamese refugees feel welcome in their new Canadian home.

Despite the tragic motives behind the arrival of many Vietnamese-Canadian families, the community has solid roots in Canada and contributes to our collective culture from coast to coast. Writer Kim Thúy, Actress Mayko Nguyen, activist and documentarian Paul Nguyen, and freestyle wrestling Olympic gold medallist Carol Huynh are just a few Canadians of Vietnamese heritage with their own chapter in our country’s great story.

The Carlyle PureChem Cougars’ home opener saw more than 500 people attend, which was a pleasant surprise as the Cougars had hoped to pack the rink prior to the doors opening. The rink was filled with fans on Friday, Nov. 4, and it was an exciting night of hockey.

“We just want to express our gratitude to the fans that came out,” Dallas Lequyer, President of the Cougars Board and player, stated. “It was overwhelming. We had in the neighbourhood of 500 people through the door and the 50/50 was $950!”

This week, Carlyle RCMP’s files-from Wednesday, Dec. 15 until Wednesday, Dec. 21included one in which a possibly-impaired driver was reported to police. Staff Sgt. Darren Simons says: “ We appreciate people letting us know about any impaired or otherwise dangerous drivers out there.”

911 Two 911 calls were received by RCMP and both were of a nonurgent nature. One was a misdial and one was a hang-up.

Alcohol-related offences Police received the report of a possibly-impaired driver. Members made patrols, but the driver was not located.

Assault RCMP are currently investigating an assault which occurred in the Carlyle area.

Assistance Members of the Carlyle detachment assisted Regina City Police with a fraud investigation in which an individual lost thousands of dollars in a scheme which involved a false claim that their grandchild had been injured in an accident and needed assistance.

Members from the Carlyle RCMP detachment advised regarding a civil suit involving a motor vehicle.

Break and enter A report of a break

and enter in Carlyle was investigated by police and was proven to be unfounded.

Criminal harassment RCMP provided guidance and support regarding the use of cellphones and texting to an area couple during a breakup.

Disturbing the peace Members responded to a disturbance at a facility in Arcola.

False alarms Three alarms were found to be of a nonemergency nature.

Failure to attend court

Two individuals failed to attend court.

Warrants were issued for their arrests.

Failure to comply with release conditions An individual failed to comply with their release conditions.

Harassing communications In Manor, detachment members assisted a couple in resolving a dispute and the matter was resolved.

Mental Health Act RCMP dealt with several files under the Mental Health Act. Mischief Police responded to

the report of an unwanted person in a house in the Manor area.

Property damage Members attended and investigated after receiving a report of property damage in Arcola.

Sexual assault RCMP are currently conducting an investigation of a historical sexual assault.

Theft Sask Energy reported possible theft of power and energy within the detachment area. RCMP are currently investigating.

Police responded to a report of stolen cattle

and found it to be a civil issue.

Traffic offences A vehicle hit a moose on Hwy #9 north. There were no injuries to the driver but the moose was killed.

RCMP responded to a report of a traffic colli-

sion.

Detachment members responded to several traffic violations this week, including speeding, seatbelt violations, a motor vehicle insurance violation and other non-moving traffic matters.
