The community of Redvers celebrated the arrival of a fully-outfitted pumper-rescue truck, donated by Carman Loraas of Loraas Disposal. Redvers Fire & Rescue Chief Brad Hutton says: “We’d like to say ‘Thank you’ to Carmen Loraas on behalf of Redvers Fire & Rescue and the communities and R.M.s we serve for this generous and much-needed donation.” Firefighter Brodie McColl adds: “It’s a remarkable gift...and it allows six firefighters to attend to a scene with this single unit, which is equipped with eveything we need to respond to an emergency.” (see story on page 4)

Carlyle Chamber of Commerce Awards Night Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle Chamber of Commerce met on Thursday, April 26, for their Annual General Meeting and Awards Night.

Chair of the Chamber, Nicole Currie, said, “I’d like to thank everyone for coming to our AGM and 2nd Annual Awards Evening to help us recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of our business

owners and volunteers.

I feel that each nomination is a win for that business as they have been acknowledged by their peers for their success.”

Awards this year were given to Southern Plains Co-op for their Community Involvement; Canadian Energy Services for Growth and Expansion; Dunn Transport for a Lifetime Achievement Award; Sydney Flynn for the 17 and under Volunteer of

the Year; Nicole Currie for the 18 and over Volunteer of the Year; Carlyle Home Hardware for Business of the Year; and Living Skies CrossFit for New Venture.

In addition to the awards given out, Verna O’Neill of Sunrise Community Futures presented to the group regarding the programs that they can offer the business community as well as the five key components to growing your business.

Dunn Transport was awarded the Carlyle and Area Chamber of Commerce 2017’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Canadian Energy Services was awarded the Carlyle and Area Chamber of Commerce 2017’s award for Growth and Expansion.

Redvers Fire & Rescue - along with the communities and rural municipalities it serves - recently celebrated the arrival of a fully-outfitted pumper-rescue truck, donated by Regina’s Carman Loraas of Loraas Disposal.

“Every year on behalf of the company, Carman gives back to the communities that support his company,” explains Brian Waynert of Loraas, who attended the Friday, April 20 celebration. “He wants to support them back. The community names are chosen by a draw each year and then it’s my job to assess what’s needed.

When I heard Redvers needed a new firetruck, I thought - we might just have a fix for that.”

The new truck has some impressive features.

Because the 24-strong firefighters in Redvers are a volunteer force, they race to the Fire Hall first - from wherever they are - to don their gear and then respond as quickly as possible to whatever emergency awaits them.

“If we’re shortstaffed, with this unit five or six of us can go to a vehicle accident with

one unit that has pretty much everything we need until the others arrive,” says Hutton. “And we cover a big area, so something like this will potentially benefit people from throughout this area. And we also have Mutual Aid agreements with other fire departments, so that makes this an even more significant contribution to our communities.”

Reeve Ron Henderson of Antler R.M. 61 agrees.

“The R.M. strives to give good equipment to our volunteer firefighters. This just adds to what we have and this is a very generous donation to our area.”

“We’d like to say ‘Thank you’ to Carman Loraas on behalf of Redvers Fire & Rescue and the communities we serve for this muchneeded and generous donation,” says Hutton.

“As I said, it allows us to do so much more for the communities we cover and we’re really grateful.”

Automobile collisions Two hit and runs were reported during this time. In the one file a vehicle was damaged by another vehicle hitting it – there are currently no suspects or clues.

The other hit and run resulted in damage to one vehicle, which the other vehicle may not have realized happened.

Fire There was a pasture fire reported near Stoughton.

Fraud An individual reported something they thought was a fraudulent transaction. They had purchased a washer and dryer on a buy and sell site. They were delivered, but the purchaser discovered they didn’t work. This is not a criminal matter, however, and is buyer beware.

Alcohol related offences An impaired driver was stopped and given a 72-hour suspension as well as a warning for an unregistered vehicle.

A caller identified a repeatedly impaired driver. RCMP will be doing frequent patrols to ensure road safety.

Alcohol consumption at a residence in Redvers contributed to a verbal altercation, which RCMP dealt with.

An individual was reported for leaving a residence while impaired. Patrols did not locate the driver.

Intoxicated individuals were causing problems at a residence in Redvers. The matter was resolved by talking it out.

There was an intoxicated male banging on an apartment door. He was arrested and lodged in cells until sober.

Mischief An individual reported ATVs and dirt bikes illegally driving through Redvers. This matter is under investigation.

Driving infractions A driver was given a warning for not having a renewed driver’s licence and for not having registration on their trailer.

Three people were stopped for not having their vehicles registered: two were fined $580 and the third was given a warning.

Inspection tickets: a couple of warnings were given for excessive damage to their windshield, inadequate headlamps, burnt out headlights, insufficient taillights, window tint, inadequate daylight running lights, and brake lights that weren’t working.

There were three intersection related offences: two were fined $230 while the third was given a warning.

Top speeders this week were a driver fined $360 and two different drivers were also fined $392 for travelling at excessive speeds.

A speeding ticket was issued to a driver as was a warning for not having their child properly restrained in a booster seat.

There was a ticket given to an individual for improper driver’s licence.

An investigation was conducted regarding a youth driving recklessly and charges are expected.

A warning was given for failing to produce their registration upon request by an officer.

Three different individuals were stopped and given a warning for obstructed licence plates.

Failure to display a licence plate led to the driver being stopped.

A vehicle was stopped for overcrowding the driver’s compartment.

There was an individual who failed to comply with their licence endorsement/restrictions and was also given inspection notices for inadequate fenders/ mud flaps as well as for their mufflers/exhaust.

Stolen property RCMP seized a stolen ATV. Charges are expected to be laid on the individual in possession of it.

Uttering threats Members are investigating the report of an individual uttering threats to another person.

Narcotics RCMP are currently involved in an ongoing drug investigation.

Saskatchewan residents continue to have improved health care access with nearly 900 more physicians providing service than in 2007, an increase of 51 per cent. In total, more than 2,600 physicians are licensed to practice in the province.

“The ability to see a doctor, whether they are a specialist or a general practitioner is one of the most important aspects of our health care system,” Health Minister Jim Reiter said. “Our government prioritized physician recruitment and retention upon coming to office in 2007, and since then we’ve seen a 51 per cent increase or nearly 900 more doctors available to provide high-quality, timely health care services to the people of Saskatchewan.”

Saskatchewan also continues to heavily recruit pediatricians in advance of the opening of the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital.

The number of pediatricians practicing in Saskatchewan has increased by 98 per cent (from 62 to 123) since 2007.

“We’ve made huge strides over the past decade, a 43 per cent increase in the number of general practitioners means better care that can be accessed closer

to home for many of our rural residents,” Rural and Remote Health Minister Greg Ottenbreit said. “While we are pleased with this level of growth, we continue to work with our health sector partners to recruit for vacant positions across Saskatchewan.”

The number of general practitioners has risen by 43 per cent, and the number of specialists has increased by 62 per cent. The number of psychiatrists has increased by 37 per cent.

A number of physician recruitment and retention initiatives have resulted in the increase of physicians in Saskatchewan, including: • one of the best physician compensation rates in the country; • training more doctors in Saskatchewan by increasing the College of Medicine’s undergraduate seats from 60 to 100, and doubling the number of medical residency positions to 120; • establishing more family medicine resident training sites outside of Regina and Saskatoon, including sites in Prince Albert, Swift Current, La Ronge, North Battleford and Moose Jaw, which has led to a 79 per cent retention rate for family physicians; and • recruiting more

than 200 internationally trained physicians, 77 per cent of whom are working in rural or regional communities.

“We are pleased to have 900 more physician colleagues working in the province,” Saskatchewan Medical Association President Dr. Joanne Sivertson said.

Managing Your Money: The ABCs of saving for a private education Have you considered a private school education for your children? If so, you are part of a nationwide trend. In nearly every province, private school enrollment is on the rise.

Over the past few years, private school enrolment in Canada has risen by almost 17% while public school enrolment has decreased by 8%.* While you’re debating whether or not to send your kids to a private school, here are a few things you should know – especially when it comes to saving for their private school education.

Know the cost The cost of private school varies based on factors like the type of school and program. Boarding programs, where tuition covers room and board, are the most expensive. According to the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC), private school tuition and boarding fees range from $30,000 to $60,000 per year, with schools in large

cities at the higher end of the price range. Generally, faith-based schools have the lowest fees and you’ll also likely pay less while your child is in the lower grades.

Keep in mind that tuition can increase annually and doesn’t always include such necessities as laptops, books, transportation, lunches and uniforms.

Many private schools offer programs to ease the financial burden, and be sure to find out if your child is eligible for a merit-based scholarship or a needs-based bursary. If you enroll more than one child, the school may offer a discount.

Know how to pay for it The best way to pay private school tuition is to plan ahead and save. A Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) is an excellent choice since any income earned isn’t taxed and there are no withdrawal restrictions – you can take out as much as you need, at any time, without tax or repayment

requirements. But to make the most of it, you must start early, even while your child is in diapers, and contribute the yearly maximum amount – that way, you’ll have much longer to save and get the biggest benefit from compound growth. It’s good to know you can also use financial gifts from family members – perhaps that wedding gift from your grandparents – as TFSA contributions.

There are plenty of options when it comes to selecting a TFSA investment type, including cash, mutual funds, individual securities, guaranteed investment certificates (GICs), bonds and even certain shares of small business corporations. Our skin — the largest organ in the human body — plays several crucial roles. It regulates our internal temperature, contributes to vitamin D production, protects us from the cold and eliminates waste (via the sweat glands), to name just a few.

Here are some tips to help protect your skin against dryness, irritation and premature aging.

• Shield it from the elements. Exposing your skin to the sun without proper UV protection (i.e. sunscreen) leads not only to sunburns but also to premature aging.

Conversely, wind and cold air have a drying effect, so it’s important to properly cover your skin, hands included, before going outside during winter.

• Stick to the shower. A nice long bath is fine every now and then, but choosing the tub over the shower too often will leave you with rough, dry skin. In any case, bathe in water that’s lukewarm, never hot.

• Use a mild soap. Some harsh soaps have a particularly damaging effect on the skin’s moisture barrier.

Choose a gentle alternative, such as a superfatted soap —

a vital ally for sensitive skin — to cleanse your skin without drying it out. Also, make sure to rinse off thoroughly to get rid of any potentially irritating residue.

• Dry off gently. When you get out of the shower, pat your skin dry rather than rubbing it.

• Moisturize. After your shower, apply a hydrating cream or serum to your skin to help maintain or restore

its moisture barrier. Make sure to drink enough water throughout the day.

Healthy lifestyle Stress, smoking (which degrades hyaluronic acid, a vital component of the skin’s moisture barrier) and lack of sleep all speed up the skin’s aging process. On the other hand, exercise and a healthy diet rich in antioxidants (eat your veggies!) help keep skin looking and feeling its best.

High school grads As grad comes up for Grade 12 students this May and June I always find myself thinking back to what my plans were and how things developed.

I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do out of school. I thought I had wanted to join the RCMP, but my parents encouraged me to get an education and Kelly Running life experience first – if it was Observer Staff something I still wanted to do later in life, then by all means, but until then I needed to learn more about myself and the world.

I ended up randomly choosing math teacher then as a profession… I did well in math in high school – had marks in the 90s… but I didn’t realize I had no idea how to study or learn at a university level. Math didn’t make sense to me there… I ended up failing a final, thankfully still passing my class, in my first semester. In my second semester I was close to failing both of my math courses… probably not the best for someone thinking they could be a math major.

In the end I decided to switch to History and focus on becoming a social studies teacher; but, then I completed an introductory teaching course that everyone had to pass before they could apply to Education. I really enjoyed the teaching side of things, but discovered that it just wasn’t for me.

So, I decided, two years in, to switch again and decided to just major in History.

So, within two years I had bounced around a little bit in what I was going to take for education.

Once deciding just to focus on History things became interesting as well because what can you do with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in History?

I entertained the idea of doing my Master’s, but decided that I should get out of the education realm and live a little before deciding if that was the avenue I should take or not.

I then found myself going from thinking I’d be a math teacher to applying to work here at The Observer. My degree had prepared me to research and write; while, I had read our local newspaper in Shaunavon quite often. It was really just a matter of learning on the job about the Canadian Press writing style and applying it.

My first interview was with Adam Swanson who had won a bodybuilding competition and I had to call him back after realizing I had forgotten to ask him a couple of questions… I was quite embarrassed about that fact; but, the only way to improve yourself is to learn from your mistakes.

For anyone graduating, striking out on your own is a lot of fun. You learn so much about who you are and what you’re capable of. One of the things I learned first-hand, however, which caused some trouble was that I wasn’t going to be good at university the same way I was at high school. There was way more work that had to go into it.

I also learned that although I had made my mind up on what I was going to do, I had to come to terms with life forcing me onto a different route.

I’ve very much enjoyed my experiences and have found myself here in Carlyle for six years as of April. Life doesn’t always go the way you plan, don’t get frustrated or discouraged, but just keep looking for the doors and windows that open if one of them shuts. You don’t always know what life will bring.

Not until you clean your room Our youngest daughter was about 8 or 9 when I went into her room looking for something as she was finishing breakfast. When I returned to the kitchen and was about to comment on the state of her room she beat me to the punch and declared, “I know, it’s quite the obstacle course, isn’t My Outlook Shelley Luedtke it.”

Keeping a child’s room clean isn’t the easiest of tasks. Overstuffed closets and overflowing toy boxes are just the beginning. Add electronics, sports equipment, collections and memorabilia as children grow and the situation becomes increasingly challenging. Then extend that to the rest of the household and we find ourselves in the situation of drowning in our stuff. Comedian George Carlin once remarked, “That’s the whole meaning of life, isn’t it? Trying to find a place for your stuff. That’s all your house is; a house is just a place for stuff.”

A recent piece on a news program pointed out that a drive across America now means that along with mountains and rivers, hills and valleys, increasingly dominant objects in the scenery are self-storage facilities. We have so much stuff it has out-paced the square footage in our rooms, closets, garages and basements and so now we are paying to store our things offsite. In fact, there are more self-storage facilities in the U.S. than Dunkin’ Donuts, Subways and McDonald’s combined.

Professional organizers work with homeowners helping them de-clutter and then suggest storage solutions to keep what remains organized. It is part of a $1 billion industry attempting to help us manage everything we own. Yet even with all the boxes, baskets, containers and systems imaginable, it seems many are still challenged to keep their stuff in a state of organization, and it’s costing us. Not just money--but time as well. There’s a statistic that suggests we spend a year of our life looking for lost and misplaced items. A year of our life.

Many cultures have a practice of spring cleaning, going back to a time when people lit

fires to keep warm during colder months. The first warm days of spring meant people could open their windows and doors and get rid of all the soot and ash that collected.

A 2018 survey found that 66% of adults participate in spring cleaning but 54% of them find it hard to get motivated or figure out where to begin while 40% say they simply can’t find the time to do all they wish to get their home organized and clean. Many respondents remarked they would love to do a more thorough cleaning but they know they need to deal with all their stuff first and they can’t seem to get started. Just think about that for a moment. People are struggling to take proper care of what they have because they simply have too much to take care of.

May 10 is Clean Your Room Day, one of those unofficial designations encouraging us to eat, honour or buy something. But perhaps this is one day that we could pause and take a look, a real look, at the stuff we surround ourselves with. Maybe we won’t have time to do the cleaning itself, but just refraining from adding to the situation is an important step that needs to be considered. Because how did we get here? Simply by having access to too much. We already have more than we need but can’t seem to resist getting more, particularly if it’s a sale we don’t think we should pass up. But what sort of bargain is it if it adds to a stockpile of what we are already struggling to contain?

If we were to take some time and intentionally deal with what is in our possession we might see there are items we have in duplicate, things we discover we don’t need to buy, and likely an awful lot we could share with others. And maybe we will find something we would have spent too much time looking for.

A day or two…or more…getting serious dealing with our belongings could end up adding a year of doing what we enjoy--simply by knowing what we have and where it is. Imagine doing something that can save us money and give us more time. There’s not many activities we can say that about. So let’s dig in, and dig out from under all that stuff. It will free up more than just our space. That’s my outlook.

Barkley could be game-changer for N.Y. Giants

Bruce Penton Quarterbacks were all the rage and garnered most of the headlines, but the New York Giants wound up with arguably the best college player when the National Football League divvied up future professionals at late April’s annual draft.

Running back Saquon Barkley went No. 2 overall to the Giants, while quarterbacks were chosen at No. 1, No. 3, No. 7 and No. 10 — the first time in NFL history that four quarterbacks have been chosen in the top 10. Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma was the first choice, going to the Cleveland Browns.

New York Jets took Sam Darnold of USC at No. 3. Buffalo took Josh Allen of Wyoming at No. 7 and Arizona chose Josh Rosen of UCLA at 10. At one time or another, all four of those QBs had been pegged as potential No. 1 picks.

Lucky for the Giants that they weren’t quarterback needy.

They’ll eventually need an upgrade from the Eli Manning, but with an improved backfield with the addition of Barkley, and a couple of key offensive line additions, Manning may turn into the NFL’s comeback player of the year in 2018.

Barkley was the con-

sensus best player available, and many scouts suggest a Hall of Fame future for him. Said the Giants general manager, Dave Gettleman, of Barkley: “It’s like he was touched by the hand of God, frankly.’’ The topper? He’s a solid citizen, with no history of drugs, arrests or late-night ‘incidents’. He probably says please and thank you with regularity and helps old ladies across the street.

At Penn State, Barkley was Mr. Everything on offence. In three years, he ran for nearly 4,000 yards and was famous for his hurdling over defensive lines. He caught passes for about 1,200 yards and gave fans thrills with his punt and kickoff returns. He totalled a school record 53 touchdowns. Barkley is strong as an ox and fast as a cop eyeing a doughnut shop near closing time.

Barkley will likely be a first-week starter and give the Giants offence a big lift, similar to what third-round pick Alvin Kamara did for New Orleans last year.

Goodness knows the Giants need it; their 246 points scored last year was higher than only one team, the Browns.

It’s generally accepted that two-time Super Bowl champ Manning still has the skill to win in the NFL but that he has been surrounded recently by B- and C-grade players.

Barkley changes all that. The Giants could be one of the surprise teams of the NFL season and if they are, the No. 2 pick will be one of the

major reasons why.

The Stoughton Coop hosted their annual AGM on Wednesday, April 25, to a large crowd amassed to see how the 2017-year went.

The financial report read that the Stoughton Co-op had amassed sales of $14.5 million, which was up $2.2 million from 2016. The biggest increases being from the cardlock and the C-Store fuel.

Food store sales and C-store sales had both increased as well; these two assets also saw the largest growth from the year prior – cost of fuel and that the food store is now selling liquor were said to have contributed to this.

“It’s hard to believe that we’re 78 years young this year,” General Manager Deric Reaney said.

He then proceeded to outline any changes to the Stoughton Co-op locations, which occurred in 2017: Food store: the store began selling liquor in the spring of 2017, there has been a major overhaul to the entire store including updated security measures and gen-

eral renovations, as well as adding equipment to the store and converting cooler lighting to LED lighting. The store is also now open on Sundays, which has been very positive.

Service Centre: improved lighting, patched pavement on the south side, admin office conversion, and the addition of security cameras.

Cardlock/Bulk Petroleum: partnered with neighbouring Co-ops for fuel hauling and paved the cardlock, which was a major undertaking. There are no major changes planned for 2018.

Benson Cardlock: Dyed Diesel will be added. A used tank was found and will be placed here. A BBQ will be held out at the cardlock this spring.

C-Store: The lot was paved at the same time as the cardlock, a minor face lift will be coming for the new coffee program that was launched last year, and from the food store sushi, fruit cups, and healthy alternatives were added to

the inventory available at the C-Store.

Admin office: The admin office is now complete and there will be a come and go event on May 8-9 for people to stop in to see them as well as grabbing a coffee and doughnuts.

The President’s Report by Ed Young was read by Tom Breault: “In 2017 your Co-op had a good year. We had sales over $14 million… [there were] 118 new members this past year.”

“We’ve supported the swimming pool, horse club, rink, etc…”

“Thank you to our staff for their dedication and thank you for our members’ support and for shopping locally.”

Awards and acknowledgements for years worked for the Co-op were given out that evening as well. For staff: Colleen Andres and Sally Fortune celebrated five years with the Co-op, Alisa Mizell celebrated 10-years, and Derek Frederiksen celebrated 15-years. For the Board: Zandra Slater celebrated nine-years

and Tom Breault celebrated 12-years.

Training awards were also given out: Deric Reaney (three awards), Renea Folk (one award), Rob Stocker (one award), Rod Folk (10 awards), Andrea George (six awards), Christie McMaster (one award), Miranda Fiarchuk (one award), and Zandra Slater (one award).

Re-elected to the board were Zandra Slater and Tom Breault by acclimation.

During the question and answer portion, the crowd only wanted clarification on the introduction of bakery equipment in the food store. This is to be used only when product – which is locally acquired from Goodwill Bakery in Stoughton – has been bought out and additional product is needed.

They are not looking to compete with the bakery in town, but are looking to ensure there is enough product on their shelves if the goods from the bakery are no longer available.

The candle or the mirror “There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” Edith Wharton Brene Brown in Braving the Wilderness describes attending Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince with her daughters. In a scene where Dumbledore is dying Harry Potter has his hand on Dumbledore’s chest and weeps. In the dark sky above the one responsible for his death, Voldemort, appears.

Professor McGonagall points his wand into the sky. A beam of light appears. Each of the students gathered there point their wands into the sky. The constellation of lights disperses the dark cloud.

As Brown sees her two daughters with their fingers in the air, and she, herself, weeping with her finger in the air, she sees the other 200 theater goers with their fingers in the air.

I can recall a real experience of candle as light at an Easter Vigil service my family attended when our four were children. In the darkened church everyone had a lighted candle. When the priest asked us all to raise our light, a collective gasp was heard as the candle beams illuminated the church.

Though Harry Potter is fiction, “What is very real is that we have this innate desire to overcome darkness. We want to be part of some collective that can overpower the darkness in our lives,” says Father Brendan McGuire in “I want to be light”.

We can be the light in darkness others experience in this world. A smile or a greeting can lift someone’s spirit. I recall in junior high school when I was the victim of a bully and it seemed the whole world was against me, my cousin put an affirming hand on my shoulder and everything changed.

We can all do our small part as illustrated in the story of a man traveling on his donkey who came upon a small fuzzy object in the road. He dismounted and found a sparrow lying on its back with its scrawny legs thrust upward.

The man asked the sparrow if he was all right.

The sparrow replied, “Yes.” The man asked, “What are you doing lying on your back with your legs pointed towards the sky?”

The sparrow responded that he had heard a rumor that the sky was falling, and so he was holding

his legs up to catch it. The man retorted, “You surely don’t think that you’re going to hold it up with those two scrawny legs, do you?” The sparrow, with a very solemn look, replied, “One does the best he can.”

And always there is an upside to our darkest moments. Fred Rogers from Mr Rogers Neighborhood said, “When I was a boy my dad would see scary things on the news. My Mother would say, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”

When I was a child living ten miles from the hamlet of Cactus Lake I sometimes found everyday life boring. When a coyote came along, it was an event. So whenever company arrived, there was always joy.

You and I are “company is coming” to the world.

Others find joy in our presence and are happy when we drop around for a visit.

We are the light to the world. “Let your light shine before others in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

CFY’s Outdoor Exploration Club: A decade of growing young gardeners Lynne Bell

This year, Cornerstone Family and Youth will celebrate 10 years of growing young gardeners through their Outdoor Exploration Club.

“I think it’s really important for kids to know where their food comes from,” says CFY Corodinator Jenn Sedor. “We’ve tweaked the program over the years and depending on growing conditions, we’ve had varying results, but ultimately, that’s our goal.”

This year, the project encompasses eight garden beds and an Early Childhood Garden on the patio of the Carlyle Public Library.

“Our Early Childhood Garden on the library patio will be made up of a few decorative flower pots which will contain tomatoes, herbs and lettuce,” says Sedor.

“That garden is in place so families and some of our littlest people can tend it on a drop-in basis when they visit the library.”

“It’s there so kids can see how gardens grow from a young age.”

“We also work with Carlyle Elementary School,” adds Sedor.

“There’s a small ‘Lot of Hope’ behind the elementary school just off the playground. There are eight garden beds built there in partnership with the Carlyle and District Lions Club.”

“We work with CES students until the school year ends and then the project is overseen by us,” says Sedor. “We start the process with students from kindergarten to grade six as part of after-school programming.”

“During the summer, these beds become a component of CFY’s camp programming and in fall, the harvesting, the turning of the beds bring us back to working with CES students.”

The gardens are organic and pesticide-free with a rain catchment system, says Sedor. “ In an effort for our gardens to be sustainable and as healthy as possible, we do a pollinator garden to benefit bees. That particular plot includes lavender, bee balm, coneflower, echinacea and other plants,” says Sedor. “The pollinator gardens won’t look ‘kept.’ Instead, they’ll kind of look like a wild, English garden that is there for the bees.”

“We’ll also have our

first crop of caterpillars and Painted Lady butterflies - native to Saskatchewan - and we’ll be releasing them, too.”

“Through the years, our produce crop has met with varying degrees of success,” says Sedor with a smile. “In one instance, we found that a little gardner liked our pepper crop so much, that they consumed almost all of it.

But that’s okay.”

“We’re also hoping to grow loads of tomatoes, beans, peas, pumpkins and squash - and if we do have a surplus, we plan on donating it to the food bank. That’s one of our ongoing goals, too.”

“However, right now, the relatively small amount of produce we grow, is served back to our programming for snacks.”

“When kids get the chance to participate in the entire process of producing food, it’s enriching for them, their families and the entire community,” says Sedor.

“I’d like to welcome families to contact us about our programs.”

“We’d love to give them the chance to get their hands dirty!”

enjoy is watching school children and teens walking to and from the two schools just down the street; the other, watching people walking their dogs.

Many people consider the Bible, including both Old and New Testaments, to be no more than a series of stringent rules or on the other extreme, mere, irrelevant theology but the pages of Scripture are teeming with practical advice. I didn’t find a lot of examples but these two references are examples of God’s instruction as to how our animal friends are to be treated.

The first, found in the Hebrew Bible known as the Torah, is Deuteronomy 25:4. Here’s how it reads in The Amplified Bible: “You shall not muzzle the ox when it treads out the grain.”

In other words, don’t be so cruel as to prevent the animal from enjoying a meal while it’s working.

The Apostle Paul mentions this admonition twice in the New Testament when referring to supporting someone doing the work of ministry.

Proverbs 12:10 takes another approach: “A righteous man regards the life of his animal but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.” In other words, don’t ever be guilty of cruelty to them!

I realize this is a somewhat different topic but to me it’s a confirmation of the practicality of the Bible and of what serving God is all about…living out one’s faith in every area of life.

Duties Provide support to the foreman in overall management of the town which would include transportation, landfill, assist with day-to-day operation, cleaning, maintenance and safety of all equipment and facilities.

The successful candidate must be self-motivated, work well with a team and independently, possess good communication skills and be community minded.

Alice May (Nicholl) Van Heukelom, born July 7, 1912, in a sod house south of Carlyle, Sask., she passed away at the Arcola Health Centre on April 17, 2018 with family at her side. She is predeceased by her husband, Louis Van Heukelom in May of 1995; parents Alice (Taylor) and George Nicholl; brothers and sisters-in-law, Hugh & Vivian (Soucy), George, Edwin, Robert & Gladys (Mills); nephew Don Nicholl. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry & Donna (Wahl); grandchildren Sarah (Morgan McMillan), Rae, Jeffrey (Rychelle Engele); great-grandchildren Cedra; Hayden & Elijah; Mason, Brody, Emery & Ava; sister-in-law Jean (Van Heukelom) Vreys; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Alice attended public school at Wildwood south of Carlyle. She boarded with her brothers, while attending high school in Carlyle. Alice furthered her education at Normal School in Regina where she obtained her Teacher Certi�icate. She taught at several country schools which included Carlton Junction south of Carlyle, Glen Morris northeast of Carlyle, Yale near Redvers, Golden Springs northwest of Kennedy, High View south of Kennedy and Moose Mountain north of Manor. Alice married Louis Van Heukelom in 1954 and farmed north of Manor. They retired into Manor in 1978. Alice remained in her house until the fall of 2014, at this time she became a resident at the Moose Mountain Lodge. Alice enjoyed scrap-booking, crosswords, bingo and blue grass/ country music. She belonged to the Manor UCW and Over 60 Club and served on a variety of boards in Manor. Alice volunteered her time in the making of the Manor History Book. Cherished memories were made with families and friends. Alice will be remembered for her good sense of humour, strong family ties and her unwavering mindset which she held til her passing. Alice will be laid next to late husband, Louis, in the Manor Cemetery during a private family ceremony, of�iciated by Rev. Michelle Moore. Alida News Submitted by Edel Cowan

On Apr. 25 Act One Productions held their last meeting at the Alida Hall with eight members in attendance. The results of this year’s drama days were reviewed and a committee will look into seeing and reading about a new play for the next season, as there still seems to be interest in the club. It was then decided to donate $12,500.00 of the proceeds to the Alida Rec Board to go towards their loan. It was another successful year for the Drama Club. Hope to see you later in the fall.

The Alida community extends sincere sympathy to Rosanne and Peter McClung on the sudden death of her sister Valerie Jurista

(Lumsden) on Apr. 28 at the age of 56 years.

Condolences are also extended to all of members of the Girard families.

Adam Cowan (Estevan) spent a couple of days (Apr. 29 to 30) at the Cowan farm to enjoy doing some quading as well as visiting with his grandparents Gray and Edel, Uncle Tim, Aunt Shelly and Ainsley Cowan.

Redvers Dance club presented the Artemis Dance – “Dancing through the Decades” on Apr. 29 at the Redvers High School. The student’s age ranges from the young beginners to the seniors (high school girls) and there was even a group of boys which was very nice to see. There were students from the Alida (or had family connected to the area) some of these included Ainsley Cowan, Harper and Kaycee Demas, Lily and Amy Allen, Elsie McIntyre, Paige Longphee and Sadie Potapinski. (Sorry if I missed anyone). The two hour show was great to watch with those amazing costumes as well as

the good old plan (blue jeans/plaid shirts or black and white shorts and tops) – it was great to see the achievements that the students had made. Kudos goes out to the teachers and helpers for another year of dedication to their dance students. A job well done everyone!

It is so great to see the nice spring weather finally here to stay. Lots of birds have returned, the pussy willows are showing their soft little faces and I’ve heard that the crocuses are beginning to peak through the ground too. The discussion topic in Mary Thiessen’s Circle of Friends was “Money, what did you buy with your first money?” Freda Longman, in 1943, went to replace a teacher turned soldier. She bought a

wristwatch, because the school clock had disappeared over the holidays. “Teachers salary that year was $600 per year. Board in a family farm home was $25 a month. Ralph saved his farm wages to buy a $30 rifle, which he later sold for $150. Fred’s father finally gave the boy .25 cents for a box of popcorn with a prize in it; a mouth organ. He still plays for fun. Ice Cream cones, .05 cents, were a Fair Day treat. Jaw breakers, 3 for 5 cents.

Word has been received of the passing of Rose Hibbs in B.C. She was the oldest of the Delarue daughters and was married to Edward Hibbs. She was 94 years old. Sympathy to the family and friends in the Wawota area.

The Twin Valleys Presbytery met in Wawota on April 20th for their annual meeting.

Forty -three attended and RTR served the food for the day.

While in Texas, Tom and Cher Badger flew to Chicago in January to visit family there. Cher’s daughter Kelsey, children Alina and Fabian flew in from San Diego.

They enjoyed the time together. While visiting they were informed that Kelsey is expecting a baby in September.

While in Texas they hit all of their favourite restaurants and had lots of happy times with our neighbours. They enjoyed convertible drives down scenic River Road.

Looking to the farming future

By Calvin Daniels If one thing is clear looking toward the future, how farmers farm is going to change as we move forward.

That may sound like a statement of the obvious since more things we do evolve over time, and farming is no different.

Through the years since farming started on the Canadian Prairies we have moved from the horse to machinery that exceeds that in the earliest manned space rockets.

We have evolved from a largely cereal grain cropping base to one that today is much more diverse.

Cultivation has given way to reduced and zero tillage systems to preserve moisture and reduce erosion.

Farm size has exploded from 160-acre homesteads to operations covering thousands of acres.

The list could go on, but it suffices to illustrate the rather dramatic changes. However, in almost every case the changes have occurred because farmers have adapted new technologies with an eye to greater efficiencies, and greater yields, two complimentary aspects of a farm being profitable.

The changes that seem on the near horizon may be made for decidedly different reasons.

We are quite obviously in a time of significant climate change.

That does not mean global warming, although there are certainly indications that it is occurring. But, we are most certainly seeing more dramatic swings in weather, whether that is

rainstorms, tornadoes, or extended winters.

When it comes to farming weather is still the most critical aspect of production. Without timely rains, crops suffer. A late frost in the spring or an early one in the fall, and crops suffer.

Too much extreme heat and crops suffer.

Any change to weather that adds to the likelihood of extreme weather may well impact crop production.

There are all sorts of stories out these days

about what is happening in terms of weather, starting most often with increased greenhouse gases leading to polar ice melts which in turn are causing weather pattern shifts.

To fully understand the science of it all one would need more letters of science behind their name than this humble scribe, but I can recognize what farmers grow, where they grow it, and even how they do it, are likely to change in the years ahead.

Some see the change as a move to more fallseeded crops as a way to alleviate the uncertainty of potentially longer and more severe winters.

Others see potential for crops which require more heat, such as corn, in new areas as summers warm.

Whatever the exact answers prove to be, farmers are going to have to be adaptive to farming changes based on a new ‘norm’ in terms of weather, as that new ‘norm’ itself evolves.

A message from the Canadian Safe Boating Council on cold water The arrival of spring breezes and warmer temperatures is long awaited for boaters who have bided their time patiently through the long months of winter to get back out on the water in their power boats, sailboats, canoes, kayaks or stand-up paddleboards.

The Canadian Safe Boating Council and its many partners would like at this time to remind boaters of the dangers of cold water immersion. “Canadian waters are usually cold year round, coast to coast to coast, so we need to always be prepared and that means wearing your lifejacket when you are on the water” says John Gullick, Chair of the Canadian Safe Boating Council.

While never planned, incidents happen more frequently that anyone can imagine.

It starts with a cold shock; the gasp that can be deadly if the person’s head is underwater.

It’s followed by approximately a minute of hyperventi-

lation. During this period, many people panic thinking that hypothermia is imminent, and they drown. The main thing to remember is that, even in ice cold water, it takes at least 30 minutes for an adult to become even mildly hypothermic! After about a minute, breathing returns to near normal and it’s during the next 10 to 15 minutes, attempts to self-rescue are most important. As this time elapses, the nerves and muscles in the arms and legs cool to the point where they can’t keep the person afloat any longer. At this point, the person’s survival is dependent on their lifejacket or PFD to keep them afloat and their airway clear. It will take approximately one hour before the person loses consciousness due to hypothermia.

minutes of meaningful movement and 1 hour of consciousness as the “110-1 Principle”.

Having a way to climb back into the boat without assistance is the most effective plan for self-rescue. If this is impossible as the boat has overturned, getting as much of the person’s body out of the water by climbing onto the overturned hull (or anything else that’s floating such as a cooler) will reduce the rate of cooling.

Should there be no means to get out of the water, the best approach is to stay very still and adopt the H-E-L-P (Heat Escape Lessening Position) Position. If alone, the person should bring their knees up as close to their torso as possible and cross their arms over their chest. This will help protect vital organs.

If with others, huddle together interlocking arms and legs pressing torsos together to preserve heat.

The best approach, however, is taking preventative measures by dressing for the water temperature rather than the air. Thermal protective clothing, worn in layers, is extremely effective at staving off or at least delaying the onset of hypothermia until help arrives.

Politics shouldn’t detract from carbon tax court case

By Murray Mandryk Even those of us who despise the notion of seeing politics played out in the courts see the value of the province’s court challenge of the carbon tax.

The issue that Premier Scott is asking the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal to rule on is the right of the federal government to apply this tax _ something that some constitutional experts say Ottawa is likely to win.

“I suspect they will not succeed,” said John Whyte, a constitutional scholar at the University of Regina and former deputy minister to NDP premier Roy Romanow.

“They (the province) have got an argument that is intelligible, an argument that is plausible, but the federal arguments in each case are probably stronger.”

However, there are other reasons to pursue the case in the courts.

Certainly, it doesn’t hurt the Saskatchewan Party government’s political cause to be seen as going to battle with

the federal Liberals and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over the imposition of tax that could potentially hurt the Saskatchewan economy.

After all, even if the court determines that Trudeau has the right to apply the tax that doesn’t mean the public has to like it.

It wouldn’t be the first time the courts have been used to make a political point.

But there area also happen to be valid legal and jurisdictional questions for raising this case.

“A tax is simply a tax.

The GST has got a fixed rate all the way across Canada. It’s clear and unambiguous,” said Justice Minister Don Morgan when the legal challenge was unveiled late last month. “For them to do something where there are a variety of different things available for different provinces based on their approval of certain other methods, is something we do not think falls within the ability to tax and is not consistent with any form

of federalism.”

Ironically, the thrust of the challenge is that federal Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act is not a tax in the sense that it’s not being evenly applied to all Canadians.

It is instead a scheme to regulate natural resource that;s a matter of provincial jurisdiction.

It is here where Saskatchewan’s “sovereign jurisdiction” may be a winnable case.

However, any time you hear a Saskatchewan government getting on its high horse about “protecting” Saskatchewan’s natural and non-renewable resources, be suspicious that there is already a bit of politics in play. Or so history tells us.

It was then-opposition Sask. Party leader Brad Wall who, in 2005, stood with not only the federal Conservatives but also Lorne Calvert’s provincial New Democrats in arguing the federal Liberal government to exclude non-renewable resources from the equalization formula.

Party even supported a Calvert’s constitutional court challenge of the federal equalization formula, arguing it costs Saskatchewan $800 million a year.

Four years later, it was also premier Wall, who abandoned this court when it became abundantly clear that then-Stephen Conservative government had no interest in making good on its 2006 election promise to remove natural resources from equalization. Had the Harper Conservatives kept their promise, Saskatchewan would have reaped a minimum extra $800 million a year to in equalization payments.

But not wanting to offend potential voters in Quebec who would have been most affected by such a change in the formula, Harper and his Conservative MPs, including Saskatchewan MPs _ caved on the matter.

Perhaps this is why it is better to have such matters be decided in the court.

Whether Saskatchewan would have won its constitutional challenge on equalization a matter of debate. This was also questionable case.

But allowing political considerations to supersede the illegal challenge has forever blemished Wall’s record.

As such, maybe it’s best to have such matters settled in court.

Baby Boxes arrive in Carlyle Lynne Bell

Finnish-inspired baby boxes have arrived in Carlyle and expectant parents and parents of babies up to three months of age are eligi-

ble to receive one free of charge after registering online and completing the process outlined at: www.babyboxuniversity.com.

“Our (Cornerstone Family and Youth) office is the pick-up point

here in Carlyle,” says CFY Coordinator Jenn Sedor. “There are also Baby Boxes available for pick-up in Oxbow and Estevan.”

“To receive one, the parent or expectant parent has to go through a

few simple steps,” she explains. “First, they have to go online to www.babyboxuniversity.com. They’ll be asked to register and then they’ll take a little course about safe breastfeeding and safe sleeping.”

“The idea behind these boxes is that by promoting knowledge regarding safe breastfeeding and safe sleeping, hopefully, babies will be less likely to succumb to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).”

“After going through the material - which is Saskatchewan-specific - the participant will be

asked to take a pretty simple online quiz, which they can take until they pass,” says Sedor. “After they complete the quiz successfully, they can print out or grab a screenshot of their registration number and bring that in to claim their Baby Box.” “The box can be shipped, but shipping isn’t free,” she says. “But picking it up at our office is.”

“The boxes are a Finnish tradition and often, their Baby Boxes contain everything a new baby might need during it’s first few months,” she says. “Our

box can serve as a bed for baby - just like the ones in Finland. It also comes with a mattress, a waterproof-zippered bag and some baby items and coupons. Those are courtesy of Telus, which is a major sponsor of this program.”

“CFY has added a few extras - some books and other things for baby -whatever we have.”

“We’ve got the boxes, the mattresses and the samples, because we’re just starting out,” says Sedor.

“But I’m excited to see how this project will grow.”
