“Troubleshooting” brings laughter for G.F. Kells Senior Drama Club Kelly Running Observer Staff

Kells Senior Drama production “Troubleshooting” in Carlyle on Tuesday, March 28, before taking the play to Oxbow for the Region One Drama Festival.

The G.F. Kells High School Senior Drama is performing “Troubleshooting” by Bradley Hayward at this year’s Region One Drama Fest held in Oxbow March 31 and April 1.

In the performance cast are Shayna N., Madison H., Jillian H., Matthew F., Payton H., Kelly H., Kaelie B., Terran B., Kyle B., Janelle B., and Julyco O. While Julyco O., also joins Kiri B., Dennis B., Ethan B., and Brittany R. as crew. Darcy Howe and Kevin Dyck provided assistance to the students.

“Troubleshooting” is a one-act play, described as a look at the best way for teens to get out of trouble. In the play, Ken and Barbie – motivational speakers – answer these questions in a lecture series titled, “Troubleshooting for Teens.”

In the beginning a few harmless tips and tricks to help teenagers get out of trouble, including distraction from the event through tap dancing. Ken’s advice slowly becomes more and more ridiculous as the lecture continues; while Barbie’s troubleshooting skills become quintessential when Ken begins encouraging the audience to take the law into their own hands.

“Barbie soon discovers that trying to get out of trouble might be more trouble than it’s worth!” The play description reads.

The comedic act performance brought laughter to the audience as the various scenarios were acted out and Ken’s solutions became increasingly out there.

Also competing from the Observer’s coverage area in Oxbow is G.F. Kells Junior Drama club, Arcola School, and Lampman School.

From Ambassador to Athlete: Carlyle’s Carter Morrison to compete at World Dwarf Games Lynne Bell

Twelve-year-old Carter Morrison of Carlyle has helped lead Team Canada into the opening ceremonies at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil, led Saskatchewan’s Olympians into the province’s Legislature and has been both a representative and a resident of Ronald McDonald Houses throughout the three prairie provinces. Now Carter Morrison has embraced a new challenge- instead of acting as an ambassador on the world, national and provincial stages, he’ll compete in multiple athletic events as a member of Team Canada at the upcoming 7th World Dwarf Games, held August 5-12 in Guelph, Ontario.

“I really can’t wait to and be a part of Team Canada,” he says. “And compete against people like me and to see about my abilities.”

The games in Guelph will welcome competitors “from ages four to 99” from around the world. In addition to the Team Canada contingent- of which Carter is a member- teams from Australia, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, the Philippines, the UK, the USA, Spain and Switzerland and others will send teams to Canada for the event, which is held every four years.

The World Dwarf Games is the largest sport-

ing event in history exclusively for athletes with dwarfism, welcoming short-statured athletes with the condition to compete in events and categories within their own age groups and in open categories.

Carter- who was born with achondroplasia- is competing in both categories and in the following events: badminton (singles and doubles), boccia (team and singles), basketball, archery, Marksmanship, soccer, floor hockey, running (60 metres, individual and relay), discus, shot put, javelin, volleyball, table tennis and kurling (in which rocks with wheels are used).

“I know, it’s just crazy,” laughs Carter. “My mom was asking me what sports I was going to do and there’s 14 different sports!”

Although some of his fellow competitors are elite athletes who have competed in the Paralympic Games and the Parapan Am Games, Carter is relishing the chance to compete on a level playing field among his peers and is already training in preparation for the Games.

“I’m most excited about badminton, basketball and floor hockey,” he says. “I’m eating healthy and watching what I eat and I’ve started going to Mr. (Colin) Wilson’s fitness classes at school three times a week.”

“He has us doing burpees, push-ups, planking,

wall sits and a lot more stuff,” adds Carter. “He’s really got us working on our core and endurance.”

“It’s going to be all little people, so it’ll be fun, but I really want to see about my abilities.”

Carter first heard about the Games via a friendand now, fellow competitor.

“My friend Wyatt from Wilcox has the same condition as me,” he says. “He’s a little person and his mom told my mom about the Games.”

“As soon as I heard about it, I knew I wanted to go and compete,” says Carter. “It will be like the Olympics because there will be a lot of socializing- not just sports- and I want to meet some new friends. But it will be different this time, too. This time, I want to go there to have fun and to compete, but I also want to win.”

Three family members are confirmed as Carter’s cheering section in Guelph. His dad Trevor, mom Lisa and sister Makenna are going and have also all applied to be volunteers at the event. His brother Mitchell also hopes to attend.

“This will be a learning experience for all of us,” says Lisa. “For Carter, it will be a good experience.

He’ll see and compete against athletes of all different levels and he’ll see where he fits in and it will help him see what he’s capable of.”

“I’m really excited,” says Carter. “And hopefully, I win!”

Carlyle’s Carter Morrison will attend another global athletic competition this summer, as he competes in the 7th World Dwarf Games, August 5-12 in Guelph, Ontario. After leading Team Canada into Rio de Janerio’s 80,000-seat Maracana Stadium in front of a global audience numbering in the billions, the 12-year-old athlete is looking forward to representing his country as a competitor. “I really can’t wait to go and be a part of Team Canada,” he says. “And compete against people like me and to see about my abilities.”

CFY Girls Group wowed by WE Day Saskatchewan Lynne Bell

Members of Cornerstone Family and Youth’s (CFY) Girls Mentoring Group were wowed by WE Day as they not only joined 15,000 of their peers at the event- held March 18 at Saskatoon’s SaskTel Centre- but also were placed in the front row- thanks to member Shayna Nicolay being named “Saskatchewan Changemaker.” Nicolay also took to the stage to accept a #Make150Count Award from the RBC Foundation.

“You can’t buy tickets to WE Day,” says CFY Coordinator, Jenn Sedor. “You have to earn your way there, which the girls did. They’ve done a lot, but locally, their involvement with the Christmas Toy Drive- in partnership with The Bargain Shop, Southern Plains Co-op grocery store in Carlyle and the RBC Foundation-as well as putting on a Valentine’s Day bake sale at the Carlyle librarywhich helped fund a girls group like ours in Kenya- were two projects that helped to get them there.”

“We owe the (Carlyle) Homespun Craft Show Committee a huge thank you,” adds Sedor.

“They sponsored the entire trip, which enabled the girls to attend this inspirational and exciting event.”

WE Charity was founded in 1995 by children’s rights advocate Craig Kielburger.

WE Day began with the intent to “empower, educate, and above all inspire.” Since 2007, participants have raised over $45 million, which has been distributed to over 1,000 charities.

To earn entry to WE Day, groups-usually a school- must pledge one local and one global “difference-making” effort to work on during the school year. Annually, WE Days take place in 14 cities throughout the world, with over 200,000 students in attendance each year.

The CFY girls were also invited to attend a WE Day pre-event at the University of Saskatchewan, says Sedor.

“It was billed as ‘An Evening of Inspiration,’ she says. “And it really was. First of all, it was exciting for the girls to be on campus. And there, they had the opportunity to hear Miss Universe Canada 2016, Siera Bearchell, who spoke about the importance of a healthy bodyand especially, a healthy body image.”

“That topic really resonated with them,” adds Sedor. “Because it’s something we’re focusing on this year in the Girls Group program. The girls really connected with Siera.

In fact, they invited her to come to Carlyle to speak.”

Sedor says that the CFY Girls’ invitations to the pre-event and WE Day’s backstage-as well as seats in the front row during the main eventwere due to member Shayna Nicolay, who was recognized for performing over 300 hours of volunteer work.

“They gave Shayna a shout-out at the ‘Evening of Inspiration,’” says Sedor. “And during WE Day itself, she was called onstage to accept her award. She was not only named a ‘Saskatchewan Changemaker,’ but she also received $150 from the RBC Foundation, as part of its #Make150Count program.”

“Because Shayna would be accepting that award onstage, we were really treated royally with all of that access,” says Sedor. “We were backstage and front row, so the girls saw a lot of impressive people and celebrities up-closepop singer Tyler Shaw, motivational speaker Spencer West, Margaret Trudeau-who did a big push for mental health awareness- and more.”

Break and enter There was a break and enter at Kenosee Lake, which is currently under investigation.

Driving infractions An individual was fined for driving without a licence. The individual was being belligerent, arguing, and swearing at officers. RCMP held the individual, but they were not charged.

There was an erratic driver reported. RCMP stopped the driver who explained it was due to it being windy out and the driver being tired.

RCMP encourages fatigued drivers to stop and rest; it’s better to be late than not make it to your destination at all.

An individual refused a breath sample, so was charged with impaired driving.

Two people were fined for not having motor vehicle insurance.

There were four intersection tickets within the coverage area of the Carlyle detachment.

This week speeders topping the scale were fined $328, $360, and $448.

RCMP fined two individuals for seatbelt violations - $175 each.

Two people were fined $150 for not driving as per their licence restrictions.

Various inspection tickets were issued during the week for mud flaps, vehicle conditions, windshields, headlights, taillights, and improperly secured licence plates.

An individual was fined for driving without a licence.

The stop sign affixed

to a light post at the intersection of Hwy 9 and 13 was knocked off.

There was a collision with a deer reported in the detachment area.

Fire There was a tractor fire north of Arcola.

Fraud An individual responded to an email allegedly from PayPal with information and then realized they shouldn’t have sent it.

Harassing communications There was a report of harassing communications in the Carlyle area.

Liquor Act An intoxicated woman was found in Carlyle and RCMP helped her home.

A person was fined $360 for having alcohol in their vehicle.

There was an intoxicated woman reportedly jumping in front of vehicles. RCMP attended and picked the woman up.

Narcotics An individual was reported in Arcola for being high on drugs.

Patrols were made, but the individual was not located.

Two other drug investigations took place.

Mischief An individual reported their hubcaps as stolen. RCMP found that the hubcaps had been removed from the vehicle and placed underneath the car.

Obstruction RCMP were searching for an individual wanted on warrant and charged a person in relation with obstruction.

Parenting Tips from Regional KidsFirst

- Teaching body parts to toddlers Receptive language is about understanding words and language.

One of its building blocks is for your toddler to know the different parts of their body.

It’s is a good idea to begin teaching body parts that your toddler can see. Start with tummy, then toes. Teach your toddler to point to parts on their own body rather than yours.

Practice and repetition are the best ways to learn. Start with ones of interest – if your child likes to hop, teach feet. If your child likes to mouth toys, teach mouth or teeth.

Make learning body parts as fun and interactive as you can!

• Teach eyes by blinking eyes and help your child learn how to blink their eyes.

• Pretend to snort, sneeze and snore when teaching nose.

• Sticker fun! Ask your toddler to put stickers on different body parts as you name them.

• Take a baby doll and have your child put Band-Aids on the body parts you name.

• Stand your child in front of a mirror and count the number of ears, nose, fingers, feet and arms.

• Bath fun! Have your toddler put coloured soap on parts as you name them.

• Make a dice from a square tissue box and label with pictures of body parts (eyes, feet, nose, mouth, hands, ears, etc.). Toss the dice and have your child point to that body part.

Mark your calendar: Redvers Ag Ex set for April 11 Kelly Running Observer Staff

Every other year, the Redvers Ag Ex Trade Show – touted as one of the best trade shows in southeast Saskatchewan – is set for Tuesday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This year they will feature agricultural displays, environmental information, and new/innovative crop technology; but, it also features home and leisure booths as well as lifestyle booths. There’s something to be found for everyone who attends at the Redvers Rec Centre.

Speaking this year includes Geoff Brown – an instructor at Lakeland College, in Vermillion, AB, and owner/operator of a small ranch – who will talk about livestock feed and cattle nutrition at 11 a.m.

Following Brown’s talk, Bruce Burnett will be

welcomed at 1 p.m. to speak. Burnett is a weather and crop specialist with G3 Canada, thus he will address current crop and weather information for Western Canada, as well as global crop conditions.

Reaching out and helping to engage youth in agriculture, the Redvers Ag Ex will host children’s activities including Brian Chicoine’s petting zoo, face painting, and OneChurch bouncers. Agriculture in the Classroom will have interactive displays set up for youth to discover.

Also attending will be the Alida 4H Beef Club, which will be demonstrating the care and grooming of calves.

The Carlyle RCMP have been slated to attend and bring with them the SGI Rollover demonstration.

Campsite reservation launch and Canada 150 celebrations The Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport will be launching its provincial park campsite reservation system for the 2017 summer season on Tuesday, April 4. The launch will be staggered, with different parks opening for reservations over a 10 day period.

Government promises

Promises. The government, regardless of who is in power, make empty promises; therefore, I’m a little leery looking at the Saskatchewan government’s promises regarding their budget. Apparently we have a $685 million deficit – which includes a “contingency allowance” of $300 million Kelly Running – while they say they hope to Observer Staff decrease the deficit by $304 million next year and return to a surplus in 2019-20. After all a budget is just a piece of paper, it’s what is intended to happen, but it may not work out that way in the end.

To “fix” their deficit they’ve now introduced a 6 percent provincial sales tax – up from five percent – but it will now be charged on children’s clothing, restaurant meals, snack foods, construction services, and more. A consumption tax is great for the government because they’re actually opening up a new taxation bracket within provincial sales tax, kids. Children’s clothing is a necessity, they grow quickly, and now the government is capitalizing on this; something they previously didn’t do.

And yet the government balks at a carbon tax, which goes to them to decide what to do with.

Would that not aid in such a deficit? People hate paying taxes. It’s the truth of it. But, taxes are what makes our world go round and are necessary to operate the province.

Personally I accept that we have to pay taxes, the government needs to be able to operate; but, I do wish that they focused on different aspects of society when considering where to put that money. I personally believe in education and healthcare. Although they didn’t cut education as much as I thought they might and they actually increased spending on healthcare, however, a more educated population is typically a healthier population as they have knowledge of health.

I also understand that the Saskatchewan Transit Company wasn’t making enough to validate it being open… however, who were the people using it? I would like to know if it was mostly seniors actually, because we would have just taken away their main form of transportation. Was there a way to reform it – cut a few routes – or was cutting it out completely the best decision?

Either way it must be difficult for those working in the STC to be told that in a couple short months you no longer have a job.

I know the government is trying to do what’s best, it’s looking at their budget and saying this is what has to happen, but I wonder if there is a way to look at something in a different way.

They’re increasing the cost of a single cigarette by two cents and adding on four to six percent tax on alcohol… fine by me, neither are necessities. People buying those products will purchase them regardless of the increase. Now all they have to do is legalize marijuana and tax that too.

Although cutting spending is one way to stop the bleeding, adding new revenue streams is another. Which they’ve somewhat done by simply expanding what PST is added onto, however, I would argue that they need a completely new form of revenue as well – so I do think they should look at carbon tax, instead of saying it’s a terrible thing without really researching it, three quarters of Canada already has a form of Carbon Tax. Find out if it could benefit the province, because I think it might be an option. Or, push to have marijuana legalized and reap the benefits like Colorado does in the States.

However, I guess it’s just a matter of waiting to see if they can bounce back from such a deficit.

Looking for names among the numbers A great movie often begins before the first character makes an appearance. I’m not just talking about buttered popcorn or comfortable seats. There are creative artists who work hard to create the title sequence that works as a lead-in to the movie itself. They get our attention because they occur before the movie starts. We are in a state of anticipation for what we Shelley Luedtke are about to see. A good title sequence helps set a tone and build interest as we wait for the action to unfold.

At the end is a similar set of frames but these usually don’t get much attention. Once the movie ends and the credits start to roll it is a cue for the audience to begin picking up their belongings and preparing to exit the theatre. While the names start rolling of all those involved in the last two hours of work we just saw, we are getting up and leaving.

Rarely do we take notice of the steady stream of talent involved.

An animated short film called “Piper” received a great deal of attention this year. In it a too-cutefor-words baby sandpiper learns to navigate the shore to find food. It is only six minutes long but took three years--and hundreds of people--to make. Each member of the animation and story team was instrumental in ensuring every detail from the bird’s feathers to the movement of the ocean came together as imagined--painstakingly creating each frame of what became an Oscar winner. Their names rolled by quickly during a closing credit sequence that seemed to run almost as long as the animated feature itself. That’s the way it is when a large team of people come together to accomplish something.

It might be easy to name the three astronauts who first landed on the moon, but what about the software engineers, photo developers, seamstresses, suit testers and more who played a vital part.

Sometimes it’s easy to get lost in the numbers.

We get so accustomed to hearing the data we lose sight of the people. What are we supposed to think when we hear the numbers? 747,000 Canadians living with dementia. 400,000 children in Nigeria in critical need of assistance. 21.3 million refugees under the United Nations mandate. 11 Canadians ending their life today by suicide. Another 210 will try. 1, 500 children under the age of five dying today from malaria. 65.3 million people forcibly displaced from their homes. 783 million who don’t have access to clean water. It’s too big. Too much to comprehend. It’s too easy for the individual life to get lost in the mass of the numbers.

These are not problems. These are not social issues. These are not health issues. These are people.

People first. People who are faced with poverty, malnutrition, war, and disease, but people first.

They are not the stuff of statistics. They are individuals with beating hearts and hopes and dreams.

They need food, health care, shelter, and medicine but beyond that, they need us, people who are every bit like them to show up and show we care.

Visit someone in a nursing home. It doesn’t matter what you talk about. Read to them or simply answer their questions. Take a teenager out for a milkshake and listen to what they have to say. Give to a charity that feeds children. Or houses orphans.

Or digs wells. Or builds shelter.

We can’t let anyone slip by unnoticed as easily as we let the screen credits roll by. Each dying child, each scared teenager, each family forced from their home has to matter—or else none of us matter.

It takes many to tackle the big projects, but if each one does his or her portion--it can be done-no matter how big the challenge. We can make epic movies. Or launch a space shuttle. Or build a wall. Or visit with someone who could use the company. Or reach out a hand of love and resources to another. It takes one, and only one, to say you matter to me. Though our name won’t show up in the credits anywhere, we will know the role we played in ensuring someone, somewhere is more than the nameless among the numbers.

That’s my outlook.

Shedding Season

Do you remember Pig Pen? He was Charlie Brown’s friend in the Peanuts comic strip, the one who was always surrounded by a cloud of dirt: a neverending, swirling, active volcano of mess. Well, except for the name, and a few other changes, this story is kind of the same.

No, it’s not the man of the Jocelyn Hainsworth household that is the problem.

Well he is a contributing factor, but he tends to leave his cloud of dirt in the porch where it belongs. It’s his side-kick, the dog, who could use a personal, body-worn, permanently running, self-charging backpack vacuum cleaner.

It would make my life so much easier. Someone should invent one. And then convince the dog that vacuums aren’t evil. It’s such a small thing that I’m asking for.

Turbo is part Husky. He was made for winter weather and has several layers of hair coat that have come in handy over the eons for his species, living in Arctic habitat as they do. He appreciates the multi layered insulation just fine during the winter, but come spring he becomes very ambivalent about owning so much hair. It’s like he has no

emotional attachment to this thing that kept him warm and cozy all winter. He just lets it fall by the wayside ... and the kitchen floor ... and around his mat ... and in front of the picture window ... and the bedroom carpet if he gets that far into the house.

Actually, it falls everywhere, and then migrates to form rolls along the steps and eddies in the corners.

And, if it’s not falling out fast enough to suit him, he will take a notion to twist and scratch in the middle of the living room until there are tufts and clumps of gray/white fluff everywhere. I probably vacuum three times a day these days. Not that anyone could tell.

Looking at this from a scientific perspective a person has to acknowledge that if we said that he started out with a 100% coat and has been losing it steadily for a month, he must be down to a lesser coat by now. I suppose I could even empty the vacuum canister and measure how much I have stored in there at this point in time, just to prove that we are partially done the shedding season of 2017.

Would that feel like a “we’re getting there” win?

Or a “is that all there is” lose? I’m not willing to go that route just yet.

He has been subjected to a brush out session on the deck, but he really doesn’t like it. He prefers his personal hygiene to happen naturally. Comb-

ing through all that fluff just seems so pretentious, and non-macho. Much better to wander the countryside (and domicile) with a faint and continual cloud of fluff orbiting his body like some kind of weird halo, leaving his calling card everywhere he has been. It’s great way to lay claim to his humans too; there isn’t a piece of clothing I own that isn’t sprinkled with Turbo DNA at the moment.

And, if he doesn’t like being brushed all that much, his opinion of having to take a bath is a whole other experience of extreme reluctance. I discovered last year, though, that shampoo and a good scrubbing did wonders in displacing fur. I’m not sure if the stress of soap and water has him let go of his hair en masse, or if all that’s holding the old hair in place is dirt and sweat and oils (the smelly stuff that dogs pride themselves on) and the soap un-glues it and it washes away. I do know that his first bath last spring was a wonderful thing for me, and it will be happening again as soon as it’s warm enough for him to dry outside. I hope he’s had enough time to forget what his leash anchored to the iron boot scraper means.

But, meanwhile I will continue to vacuum multiple times a day. If I was any good at knitting I’m pretty sure there is enough raw material to whip up a whole new dog so far ... and it’s not even April yet.

On the up and up I do believe that Spring has sprung! I could go outside last weekend with just my short sleeves! I keep saying that winter went by quickly for me, but if you ask my husband, who spent his winter fighting with snow and feeding cows every day; he disagrees. I am sure the sun and every showing grass will brighten his outlook and soon, feeding Krystyn Gillies cows will be months away again.

I am happy to announce that the rooms upstairs are almost finished! We got the floor laid, the stairs painted, the trim is 95% finished and I can see an end! All we have left is the carpet runner on the stairs and a few more pieces of trim and maybe another coat of paint on some doors and casings. It feels so good to soon be able to move in furniture!

We have also had a lot better luck calving now that the storms seem to be over for another winter.

I can attest that we will NEVER be calving in March again, I promise! Normally, we hold out until a week or so into April, while there is no guarantee that the weather is nice during that month, so far we have had only good luck.

My husband and I bought a dozen heifers in February and they had a March 1st start date to calve.

On February 27th, our first calf was born dead.

March 1st, one of our cows due in April, aborted her calf. A couple of days later, the awful snow storm took another heifer’s calf. It was an awful start to the season, but since then, we have had five or six, (I can’t remember at the moment), healthy, live calves.

A few of them were born in lots of snow and cold, but the only thing lost were the tips of some ears.

I wish I could say the calves just popped up and started to suck right away, but that was only the case for a couple of them. The rest, we had to fight with. The cows were champs, thank goodness!

The first calf, who was born in the wake of that nasty snow storm, has two moms even! The cow who lost her calf the night before has taken to coparenting the little lady who was the first live calf of the season. These heifers have really made me appreciate good cows who take care of their calves from the moment they are born.

The next couple were very quick to get up and get moving, which made our job easy, stand back and watch. The ones following that were a little bit tougher. They were born but it was cold and they used up all their strength just getting up and walking around. We had to take them into the warm barn room, get them warmed up and start all over again.

The second last calf that was born, my mom called me to let me know he was born. Her voice

sounded a little off, so when she said there was a problem, I held my breath. I was dreading the fact that he was dead, or almost dead, but she informed me that the problem was, he was the wrong colour.

We are a black angus herd here and much to our surprise, a tan/red calf with a big white face stood there in the mix of everything black.

Once the shock of the colour wore off, I found myself battling the big brute to get a drink from his momma. Of course, he just stood there. No suck reflex. No desire to get a drink. Just stood there.

We have a few bags of colostrum that we give these kinds of calves, so they get a bit of energy and can be warmed up from the inside out.

He would not drink. Not a single sip. It was beyond frustrating! Thankfully, we were able to tube

feed him, get him warmed up for a few hours and magically, he latched on the cow the following morning and hasn’t looked back since.

Fast forward to the last calf born. My dad called me and told me we had another one, but he had a weird tone to his voice as well. I asked what was wrong and he told me that our chocolate lab was bigger than the calf. Sure enough, there stood a TINY little black calf, almost twin sized, but no other twin could be found. Weird!

The forecast from here on out looks good, so I am not overly worried about the calves to come.

Wish us luck though! And good luck to everyone else who has started, are just getting started or are a few weeks out. May the calves be born healthy and strong!

GFK badminton has started. Both junior and senior teams will be practicing twice a week and taking part in tournaments and exhibition games throughout the season. Fitness club has been running since the beginning of September with many eager students coming out Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 7:45 – 8:30. All students and fitness levels are welcome to come at any time. Get your

Wrestlers sweep provincial championships 17035CC0

Both Carlyle’s Gordon F. Kells High School and Manor School welcomed home provincial wrestling champions, as members of their student bodies captured the podium at the SHSAA Provincial Wrestling Championships March 17 and 18 in Warman. 17U Vipers silver medal winners Submitted by the Southeast Vipers Volleyball Club The 17U Southeast Vipers attended Sask Cup 3 in Melfort/Tisdale on March 25 and 26. The girls were ranked first in their pool going in. Their first match they came up against Regina QCVC Blackout, which the girls came out strong against beating them in two straight sets. Next the girls faced Thundering Hills. The girls were down in the first 7-1, but came back to win the set 25-19; while they held the lead in the second set to win the match. The Vipers then took on the Northwest Diggers, winning the match.

Next up was Waldheim United, a team the Vipers have met before and is always a good battle.

The Vipers took the first set, then lost the second, and couldn’t quite gain an edge in the third losing 15-9. This placed the Vipers second in their pool

and they would play against third place in Pool A in their crossover match, which turned out to be the Oxbow Black Knights. The Black Knights took the match in two sets, but the Vipers battled through.

Congrats to the Black Knights who went on to win bronze in Div 1 against the Weyburn Volleyball Club.

The girls were repooled to battle out the top teams of Div 2 Tier 1. They took on Thundering Hills again with a win before coming up in a rematch against Waldheim United. The two teams battled hard and the match went to three, but this time the Vipers were able to take the win landing them in the gold medal match of Div 2 Tier 1. The Vipers took on Lanigan in a three set battle. Both teams played very well, but Lanigan earned the gold in the end.

The next action for the Southeast Vipers 17U team is at Provincials in Saskatoon, April 7-9.

The Alida community extends sincere sympathy to the Nissen and Chicoine families on the death of Margaret (Nissen) Chicoine of Calgary, who passed away Mar. 17 at the age of 85 years. She was predeceased by her husband Alcide Chicoine (formally of Storthoaks), her parents Hugo and Johanna Nissen (Nottingham), her siblings, Louise, Hugo, Johanna and Christina and daughter-in-law Rose Warnock.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Hal and Glenda Nielsen on the death of his Uncle Bill Watson who passed away Mar. 19 in Vancouver. The Watson family was raised near Auburnton.

On Mar. 23 the Alida Housing Authority held a meeting where they accepted the resignation of Chairperson Glenda Nielsen and welcomed Lillian Patton to become the board. Nominations of board members were as follows Chairperson – Brenda Junk, Secretary – Brenda Boutin, Vice-chair – Edel

Now the Men’s Worlds Curling Championship is about to begin this coming week (April 1 – 9) and it is being held in Edmonton so one will be able to watch the games at a decent hour (ha ha) and learn winners first hand (ha ha). Members of the Cornerstone Family and Youth (CFY) Girls Mentoring Group earned their way to spend an exciting and inspiring two days in Saskatoon at the province’s WE Day with good works which impacted both local communities and the wider world. WE Day is an annual event held worldwide which encourages young people to implement positive change in their communities, their countries and globally. The girls joined 15,000 peers from across Saskatchewan in Saskatoon’s SaskTel Centre March 17-18. In addition to earning their invitation to WE Day with their philanthropic activities, the girls also were rewarded with front row seats at the event, due in part to Girls Group member Shayna Nicolay’s receiving the RBC Foundation’s #Make150Count Award.

You have to earn your way there- and they did it!”

Thirsty

By Linda Wegner For us Wet Coast dwellers (no, that’s not a spelling error), today was a day to celebrate. It didn’t rain!

Not only that, the sun shone and the wind, gentle and warm, coddled the laundry; today I was finally reminded of the fragrance of bedding dried out on the line.

This winter has been one unlike any we’ve encountered since moving to this part of the country over thirteen years ago. It’s a good thing that I’m not superstitious or I’d have suspected this would happen and I might have fled the place for the last three months. Alas, there’s been no opportunity for British Columbians to smirk during this past winter and emerging spring.

But while we have been awash in rain and melted snow, parts of the prairies face the spectre of possible drought. The land cries out with

All this was made personal this week as I pulled a book from my shelf, a treasure that I’ve read several times but almost forgot about until I realized my need for some soul-refreshing rain from heaven. Come Thirsty by well known author, Max Lucado, discusses some of the symptoms of spiritual thirst, symptoms that are far too easily pushed aside, symptoms that too often are considered apart from their true origin, symptoms that cry out for acknowledgement and confession of need.

While each of us has responsibilities to tend to, in our attempts to carry on as if the strength to handle life’s challenges depended solely on us, we become parched and thirsty for the life-sustaining grace of God. He invites us to drink deeply. Freely.

Celebrating the cold in Québec City CARNAVAL DE QUÉBEC

================================================= It’s the ice-cold truth: Canadian winters aren’t for the faint of heart.

So instead of fighting the inevitable, residents of the great white north have long decided to embrace it by celebrating the season of snow and ice. Cities across the country host their own winter festivities, but the biggest by far—in fact, the biggest in the world—take place in Quebec City. For two and a half weeks each winter, the Belle Province’s capital city becomes a hub of snow-packed adventure and merriment as the Carnaval de Québec unfolds. From near and far, people are drawn to the festival by the shimmering Ice Palace (a hotel built entirely out of ice and snow, furnishings included), the jovial smile of Bonhomme Carnaval, and the promise of frosty fun with family and friends. Live outdoor entertainment, evening parades and an assortment of wintertime activities are all part of the festival culture. Staples include the International Ice Sculpture Contest, a hockey tournament, urban ice fishing, the crowning of a carnival queen (chosen from a selection of seven carnival duchesses), and an annual canoe race on the St. Lawrence River, ice floes and all.

But because 3.0. of the economic scarcity brought along by two world wars and a Great Depression, Carnaval didn’t become an annual event until 1955. Since then, the event hasn’t skipped a year, making it Canada’s longest-running winter festival. Each winter, the list of activities and entertainment grows to keep up with the times. More recently added activities include snowga (yoga in the snow), giant bowling and giant foosball.

But no matter what events are organized, a spirit of play and celebration is woven through every edition of the venerable festival.

Carnaval quick facts • Carnaval de Québec attracts more than 500,000 annual visitors, with approximately half coming from outside Quebec.

• The official drink of the carnival is Caribou, a heady cocktail made from red wine and hard liquor (usually whiskey, but may also be brandy, sherry or vodka). The soul-warming concoction is often drunk from plastic canes that are topped with the visage of the carnival’s mascot, Bonhomme.

• Carnaval de Québec is the only place in the world where you can attend an ice canoe race.

• Construction of the Ice Palace requires an estimated 9,000 tonnes of snow compacted into bricks that are then used to build the castle walls. A team of 15 workers works round-the-clock for two months each year to complete the project.

• The ceinture fléchée, or arrow sash—thought to be created around 1785—is a common accessory among festivalgoers. The garment was traditionally worn by early French-Canadians, who tied it around their waist to keep out the cold.

CANADA’S SYRIAN COMMUNITY Old-time crooner Paul Anka may be the most famous Canadian of Syrian descent, but many other members of this ethnic community have made their mark on our collective identity over the years. The late producer and manager René Angélil; Liberal MP Omar Alghabra; businessman and CEO Jack Kachkar; professional wrestler Rami Sebei; and film director Ruba Nadda are just a few Syrian Canadians who’ve made impressive strides in their respective spheres of influence.

Syrians first started to come to Canada near the end of the nineteenth century, and by 1912, over 5,000 had settled in various cities and towns across the country. This first group of immigrants was mainly made up of peddlers, but a substantial number also became active in the mining and lumber industries. However, a shift in Canada’s immigration policies slowed down the influx of new arrivals to a near halt until further changes were made in 1955. A second steady wave of immigration followed this mid-century policy change, and as of the 2011 National Household Survey, 40,840 Canadians of Syrian descent resided on Canadian soil. Six years later, this number has nearly doubled.

Beginning in 2015, a large number of Syrian refugees were brought to Canada in response to the war and devastation occurring in their home country. In early 2017, the total number of privately sponsored and government assisted Syrian refugees was 40,081. Though this new group of Syrian-Canadians has yet to fully acclimatize within their new home, many have already begun making a positive impact in their communities; for example, new Syrian Canadians came together in solidarity to raise funds and offer support during the Fort McMurray wildfire that forced thousands out of their homes in 2016.

$100,000 Extra win in Carievale Believe it or not, Paul Duperrier has 100,000 reasons to be thankful for an early March snow storm. The Carievale resident won $100,000 on the March 8 EXTRA draw.

Beauty is in the eye of the lover

“That’s a good idea,” the man said. “Here, let me hold your monkey.”

We know that God creates us as his beautiful creatures. But often after looking into the mirror, we feel we need to qualify that and we distrust our own beauty.

We look at couples in love and ask ourselves, “What can they possibly see in each other?”

Think of the most beautiful man and woman in the world. Likely they are in Hollywood,

in the media, or if we are really in love, much closer to home. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the lover.

Mark 8:22-26 relates the story of Jesus and the blind man he cured. Jesus does not just cure him He takes him aside and spends some time alone with him. Then Jesus prays with him, applies saliva to his eyes and asks him, “Can you see anything?”

“I see people; they look like trees to me.”

Jesus prays with him again and anoints his eyes a second time. This time the sight is completely restored.

To me it is a mystery how God can love us all individually. God wants to spend time with us in prayer. Whatever our illness or sin, it may take more than one encounter to effect a cure. Take the time to pray with Jesus, especially if the hurt is deep or the hold of sin strong.

It takes time to let go of what afflicts us.

With us it may not

be a one time cure. But if we stay in that relationship with Jesus we will prevail and we will have our spiritual sight restored completely.

It more than likely is a life-long process.

That’s why the church encourages us to worship weekly and to set time aside to pray daily, listening to the voice of God in the scriptures.

I can picture us at the end of life, alone with God who loves us and still wants to perfect us. More than likely this will be on a hospital

bed. Again, we will be alone with Jesus.

Jesus will ask us, “What do you see?”

We will say, “The people look like trees.”

Jesus will stay with us a little longer. And we know how the story ends. Our vision is completely restored. Then we see the image of Love itself, and we know that we are the beautiful object of that gaze of love.

“I have loved you with an everlasting love.” (Jeremiah 31:3)

Redvers Condo Chatter Submitted Officially spring is here although the huge piles of snow still remain.

Many of the residents have been glued to their televisions keeping up on the curling. In spite of this we have kept very busy. We had an Irish Stew supper on the 17th with a large crowd attending; many of the women wore their green clothing and one even had green hair.

We decided to purchase a memorial plaque to remember all the tenants who have been a part of

our “Condo Family” and have since passed away.

Doreen put on pie and coffee one afternoon and almost enough was donated to pay for the plaque.

We were saddened when Geraine Sheard passed away; a number of us attended the Memorial Tea at Maryfield to show our support for John and Family.

Then on Sunday, Helen Gervais, one of our older but busy residents celebrated her 92nd birthday with cake and coffee for family and friends. So who can say that old people sit around and do nothing!

applied for a grant through Tundra for a washroom renovation project to be completed this spring.

In response to the application, Tarin Nahachewsky Surface Land Representative with Tundra travelled to Redvers to present a cheque to the Redvers Rec Centre. Tundra donated $15,000 to the Redvers Rec Centre on Thursday, March 23.

Accepting the cheque on behalf of the Rec Centre were Krista Light, Alicia Stewart, and Brad Hutton.
