Cougars 4th in 3A provincial volleyball Lynne Bell

The Carlyle Cougars 3A Girls volleyball team hosted the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association (SHSAA) 3A Girls Provincial Volleyball Championships on Friday, Nov. 17 and Saturday, Nov. 18, welcoming nine of Saskatchewan’s other top teams to join them in competing for the province’s top title.

In the final, four teams fought hard for the number-one spot, with the Wakaw Warriors emerging as provincial champions, the Foam Lake Panthers taking second place, the Wynyard Bears capturing third and the hometown Carlyle Cougars following in fourth place.

The gold medal was decided in three sets with Foam Lake winning the first set 25-22 and Waka winning the second and third sets 25-10 and 15-9.

In the bronze medal match, the Wynyard Bears defeated the Cougars in two sets, 25-22 and 25-14.

Throughout the weekend, games were played at both the Gordon F. Kells High School gym and at Oxbow’s Prairie Horizons School.

In addition to the top four teams, the Langenburg Screamin’ Eagles, the Rocanville Rara Avis, the St. Walburg Saints, the Stobart Rebels, the Watrous-Winston Wildcats and the Wilkie Broncs-McLurg also competed for the Saskatchewan championship.

Cougars Coach Trent Johnston said: “An incredible season has come to an end for the Senior Girls volleyball team at GFK. Although the finish wasn’t what the girls had hoped

for, it was a journey full of highs and great finishes - three first-place finishes, two thirds and an SHSAA Conference runner-up and SHSAA Regional Championship and a 4th place in a very competitive SHSAA 3A Girls Provincial Volleyball Championship.”

“A huge thanks goes out to the community of Carlyle and the local sponsors, each and every volunteer, the staff of GFK School, and the executive of the organizing committee in hosting an incredible provincial championship.”

“A special thanks to Colin Wilson and Clarke Tavanetz in looking after things at both (Carlyle and Oxbow) schools,” added Johnston.

“Congratulations to Wakaw, Foam Lake

and Wynyard for their top finishes as well as the rest of the teams for making the Provincials one of the best ever.”

“Last but not least, best of luck to our graduating teams members: Jorja Bendtsen, Taylor Sargent, Haylee Barta and Gracie Schutz. All the best to you in your future endeavors.”

Commisioner Colin Wilson added: “A lot of people don’t realize the effort and planning that goes into an event like this. We’d like to thank the yellow shirt crew the volunteers.”

“I grew up in rural Saskatchewan,” says the MLA for Saskatoon Willowgrove. “In the small town of Blaine Lake, north of Saskatoon - so I understand the many challenges and benefits of living in rural Saskatchewan.”

“I also represent a strong urban riding in Saskatoon,” adds Cheveldayoff. “I can win in rural Saskatchewan and in urban Saskatchewan.”

Previously a member of the Privileges committee and the House Services committee, Cheveldayoff describes himself as “A fiscal conservative.”

“I believe in balanced budgets and I believe at the end of the day, that’s what’s going to benefit us as a province.”

“Every family and every business should balance their books on a monthly basis,” he says. “So too should the Saskatchewan government.”

“We have a threeyear plan and with the budget, we have to recognize we don’t always get things right,” says Cheveldayoff. “I’m not passing the buck. When you’re facing a reduction in the budget of $1.3 billion, you have a pretty big hole to fill.”

“I believe investors will look at the NDP government in Alberta and the Conservatives in Manitoba and if we stick to our plan for a balanced budget, I think

they will want to invest here in Saskatchewan, because of the security it will offer them.”

Cheveldayoff says he aims to enhance rural internet and cell phone service throughout the entire province.

“SaskTel spends $300 million every year on capital expenditures,” he says. “I’m asking them to take 10 percent of that - $30 million - to enhance connectivity in every farm, hamlet, village and town in the province.”

Socially, Cheveldayoff says the legalization of marijuana in Canada is of “great concern” to him, and as a result, believes that the age of 25 is an appropriate legal age for the purchase and/or consumption of marijuana.

“The marijuana issue and drugs coming into our province is a great concern,” he says.

“The Canadian Medical Association states that the brain continues to develop until a person is 25 years-old. And Corey O’Soup - Saskatchewan’s Advocate for Children and Youth - agrees with the Canadian Medical Association on this issue.”

“I’ve spoken to people who are concerned about it from a workplace safety point of view, too,” adds Cheveldayoff. “One was a crane owner/operator who

was concerned about both worker and public safety and his liability as a business owner.”

“We do have this forced on us by the federal government, but as a province, we have choices, too.”

Regarding a carbon tax, Cheveldayoff says, “I’m totally against the carbon tax and will fight that tooth and nail.”

“A carbon tax is not going to do what it’s supposed to do and there are better ways to deal with carbon - through innovation and food security, to name two.”

Cheveldayoff says the province’s agriculture sector is often cited as a problem with regards to greenhouse gas emissions, but adds: “Agriculture isn’t the problem; agriculture is the solution to carbon sequestration.”

“We’ve got to do a better job of telling the Saskatchewan story.”

“I’ve served 10 years as a cabinet minister,” says Cheveldayoff. “And with not one problem, because I treat people with respect...I’m very proud of the 10-year career I’ve had as a cabinet minister.”

“Brad Wall will go down in history as one of Saskatchewan’s best premiers. Nobody has to fill his shoes, but instead, we must take the torch, run with it and make it shine again.”

Weekly RCMP report Lynne Bell

The Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to several calls between Thursday, Nov. 9 through Thursday, Nov. 16.

911/Alarms Members of the Carlyle RCMP detachment are currently working with SaskTel to determine the source of several 911 calls originating from the same cell phone.

Members received three 911 calls which were determined to be non-emergencies.

One call to 911 was the result of a child playing with the telephone.

Three alarms went off in error at area businesses – two in Carlyle and one in Redvers.

Assault Police responded to a report of an assault within the detachment

area. As a result, charges of uttering threats were laid.

Assistance Carlyle RCMP assisted the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice by serving a subpoena.

Members responded to a Child Welfare matter.

Police conducted one well-being check this week.

Failure to attend court An individual failed to attend court.

Fire Carlyle RCMP assisted at a fire in Redvers. There were no deaths or injuries.

Fraud An individual reported an attempted fraud to Carlyle RCMP. This person was informed that they had won $2 million and a car. To claim this prize, they would have to pay the taxes owing with either cash or gift cards and they were instructed to deliver the cash or gift cards to an area WalMart.

Although this individual did not respond

to this attempted fraud, Staff Sgt. Darren Simons of the Carlyle RCMP detachment advises members of the public not to underestimate the persuasiveness of some fraudsters.

“If you’ve supposedly won something and you didn’t enter the contest, chances are that this could be an attempt at fraud,” says Staff Sgt. Simons. “But keep in mind, that often these individuals are very persuasive, persistent and polite. They will try and convince you without ever being threatening or rude.”

“And remember, if you legitimately win a contest or a prize, you don’t have to pay extra to receive it.”

Mental Health Act Members of the Carlyle RCMP detachment dealt with files under the province’s Mental Health Act. Theft RCMP are currently investigating a fuel theft in Manor.

In Kisbey, members are investigating a cattle theft.

Carlyle Town Council Lynne Bell

Carlyle Town Council held its regular bi-weekly meeting Wednesday, Nov. 15 at the Carlyle Civic Centre.

Council’s next meeting will take place at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 6 at the Civic Centre.

Property A residential property located at 202-5th Street West in Carlyle will be demolished and

the lot will be sold by the Town of Carlyle.

Carlyle welcomes Provincial Volleyball Championships Town Administrator Natalie Miller will extend an official welcome on behalf of the Town of Carlyle to senior girls volleyball competiors who will compete for the 3A Volleyball Girls Provincial Championship, Nov. 17-18 in Carlyle and Oxbow.

tival Council approved a partial street closure on Souris Avenue at the request of the Dickens Village Festival committee. This year’s Dickens Festival will be held in Carlyle, Dec. 1-2.

Building Permits Council received notice that the cost of a professional building inspection for residential and business construction will not increase for 2018.

Traffic Offences Carlyle RCMP have laid charges for a hit and run on the community’s Main Street in which a vehicle hit a lamp post.

According to Staff Sgt. Simons: “There are a lot of people out there with cameras and videos.

Two businesses in town assisted us with this investigation by providing us with videos.”

Members responded to a report of a possiblyimpaired driver on the highway between Carlyle and Arcola. Police caught up with the vehicle near Stoughton and found that the motorist was not impaired.

“Whether a driver is found to be intoxicated or not, we appreciate and will respond to calls reporting any unsafe drivers,” says Staff Sgt. Simons. “We are pleased to work with members of the public to keep our roads safe for everyone.”

Three motorists were found to be driving without vehicle insurance. The fine for this offence is $580.

An individual was fined $100 for not producing a driver’s licence when requested to do so by the RCMP. A motorist failed to produce a vehicle registration certificate and as a result, was fined $100.

RCMP members dealt with four intersection-related offences this week. The fine for this offence is $230.

An individual was fined $150 for driving without a valid driver’s

licence.

Several speeding tickets were issued within the detachment area, with fines reaching $210.

An individual was fined $280 for operating a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle.

Members also dealt with several individuals who were not wearing

seatbelts.

This week, members dealt with semi-trailer drivers who violated the following traffic laws: driving without a proper inspection certificate, driving a vehicle without daytime running lights, driving a vehicle with an obstructed licence plate and transporting an insecure load.

Redvers Agricultural Society Annual General Meeting In Review of the Year 2017 The Redvers Agricultural Society held meetings at Triple LB and at the Redvers Agricultural Society show office this past year. The show office was utilized by other clubs when using the arena, and it also served as a gathering place.

We fund raised this year by selling Saskatchewan Horse Federation tickets, hosting a hotdog sale at the Advantage Co-op in Redvers, and by selling tickets on a fire pit donated by D4 Services Ltd. We received many donations, both financial and product, from John Deere (Nelson Motors), Head

for the Hills Veterinary Services, Advantage Co-op Redvers, Gwen Knight, Redvers Pharmasave, Alida and Area 4H Beef Club, D4 Services Ltd, Redvers Wildlife and the R.M. #61. We had a wonderful support group to get ready for our safe horseshow in July, including our on-going first aid man John Wotta.

The Redvers Agricultural Society gave back to the community by financially donating to the Redvers Music Festival. The arena was available to community members to have a safe place to ride,

and this Is where the Alida and Area 4H Beef Club held their Achievement Day. Many exhibitors commented on the wonderful arena conditions and how well the show is run every year, with plans to come back next summer. The audience at the horseshow seemed to enjoy the friendly atmosphere, with family and people from Manitoba and Saskatchewan showing.

The 2018 year looks like it will be a good one with so many plans on the go!

Be Careful in the Kitchen

National Home Fire Safety Week 2017 With the holiday season quickly approaching, your mouth may be watering at the thought of turkey, apple pie and mashed potatoes. The season is usually accompanied by a variety of good foods, but it’s also too often marred by tragedy in the form of kitchen fires.

November 24-30 is National Home Fire Safety Week and the Canada Safety Council is reminding all Canadians to be extremely careful in the kitchen.

Cooking is the lead cause of home fires in Canada, and the holiday season tends to bring with it a significant amount more of baking, cooking, braising and general oven use.

It’s important when discussing this topic to make the first point abundantly clear: never leave food unattended on the stove. It doesn’t matter if it’s just for a minute, or for a quick phone call, or for a knock on the door, or even being caught up with children.

Here are some tips on how to handle a fire, should one occur: * If at any time you feel endangered or unable to control the fire, call the fire department and evacuate the house. Make sure your family knows the fire escape route and they’re able to get out safely. * In the event of a fire in your oven or microwave, close the door and turn it off. The lack of oxygen will eventually smother the flames and prevent them from feeding and growing. * Similarly, if your fire happens in a pan, use the oven mitt to clap on the lid then remove the pan

from the heat source. It, too, should fizzle out due to lack of oxygen. If you don’t have a lid for it or are unable to put it on safely, use a fire extinguisher and aim at the base of the fire. * Grease fires can be especially treacherous. Never use water to try and put one out, as the grease will get repelled and risk spreading the fire further. Instead, use baking soda or salt (but never flour,) and use a large wet cloth to smother the fire. * Never swat at or blow on a fire. Kitchen fires don’t necessarily behave like birthday candles - the air movement is far more likely to spread the fire than it is to put it out. * And, of course, make sure your hair is tied up and your clothing fits comfortably without being too loose. I’m coming to the Wonder Woman discussion a little bit late; but for those who like superhero movies in the past they’ve featured male characters. Movies like the Avengers features female characters, but they aren’t stories focused on them.

It’s odd because I don’t feel as though I had been missing a feKelly Running male superhero and I wouldn’t Observer Staff call myself a feminist. However, I found it odd that after the movie I felt powerful.

I’m 28 and that was the first time a film had that kind of impact. I’ve loved movies since I was young and have always enjoyed superhero movies: the convictions and decidedness to do what is right was inspiring.

In fact I have watched many superhero movies, Batman was big when I was little, there was a Superman remake when I was in high school, and the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy. Most recently Marvel and DC Comics have been making films based on their characters. Out of those, Wonder Woman, is I believe, the first feature length film featuring a female superhero lead.

With all of the male based superhero movies… do guys leave those shows feeling powerful? Because I honestly felt “tough” just from watching the film and seeing another woman kicking butt… and I had never felt that way before when watching a superhero movie.

So, is that a narrative based on seeing someone in the media portrayed by someone you can identify with in some way? Much like how dolls are now being represented by a wide variety of races and cultures. There’s something about watching movies or seeing diversity today, which used to be rare, and Hollywood is often accused of “white washing” films – among many other things recently.

But how does a Marvel film like Black Panther make people of African descent feel? I would imagine similar to how I felt watching Wonder Woman.

It’s so important for people to see themselves in the larger view of the world and media like books and movies can do that. You’re literally seeing someone out there that you can more easily identify with and that can make a huge impact in someone’s life.

Like I said, I wasn’t aware that I was missing out on anything. Batman had always been my favourite superhero: he was a regular guy who went through a life changing experience, he was in peak physical condition for his age, but he used his intelligence above all else. He thought scenarios through and figured out ways to succeed even if he was out numbered or things looked bleak; he would always find a way and in doing so it was always in a way that didn’t compromise his policy of never killing.

Although Wonder Woman didn’t have these qualities being that she’s a god, has superpowers, and I’m assuming the sword she uses likely has killed a few enemies… she was extremely intelligent as well although she didn’t always think her actions through like Batman seems to.

But, it was exciting for me to know that little girls were going to get to grow up with such a movie.

One that hopefully makes them feel powerful as well because when I was growing up women – despite their qualifications- were typically secondary characters… Maybe that’s why I enjoyed horror movies when I was younger as well – there always seemed to be a female main character that comes out on top and beats the killer.

I think it’s awesome to have such diversity shown in the media and shows young girls they can be powerful too.

Heart of the Moose Mountains

There is more to be seen When I went whitewater rafting I took the morning orientation session very seriously. I wanted to ensure I was clear on all the terminology so that when our guide called out instructions I would remain right side up in the water.

At one point, after our raft had just gone through some rather thrilling rapids, the guide yelled My Outlook out “To the left. Wave!” I preShelley Luedtke pared for another crash of water to hit us. The others in the boat held up their oars and waved for the photographer who was positioned to get the perfect shot of each raft as it travelled down the river. My family looks fantastic in the picture, as do the others in the raft with us--carefree, adventurous, with huge smiles on their faces. I am tucked to the side preparing to handle what I thought was an oncoming wave. You can’t see me, but I’m there.

A young lady asked if I had a moment to talk, her eyes never making contact with mine. I invited her into my office and with eyes still downcast, the 17year old revealed, “I’m so tired of never being seen.”

It wasn’t about people not noticing things she said or did. It wasn’t about feeling left out of activities others were doing. She was carrying around the pain of feeling invisible. That her presence was insignificant. No one saw her as important. Or at least that was how it felt. She needed people to understand-you don’t see me, but I’m here.

We are the most photographed people of any time in history. Our most significant moments are captured and those pictures become our way of remembering the moment; our declaration that this moment matters; that we were part of it. See us-we’re here.

But there are times--perhaps too many times-

-when we don’t see what we need to. A teenager struggling to find his way in a school culture that he feels holds no place for him feels isolated. A woman whose career derailed said no one looks her way, perhaps, she wonders, “because they don’t know what to say so they act like they don’t see me.” A 49year old recently divorced woman, in a phone call admitting to a friend she had taken too many pills, described the painful loneliness she was feeling, “It’s as if I don’t exist anymore.” These people, like others, feel themselves to be invisible. Their reasons are different; their perception the same. They wonder, “I am here. But does anyone see me?”

I had a Sociology professor who was blind. The classes I took from him were far and away my favourites. He had a teaching style that invited comment and conversation and he would often direct ideas at individual students to get us to push ourselves to probe more deeply. He knew what worked for each person in his class because he took notice of each of us. He didn’t need to see…to see.

It’s not a question of visual acuity. It’s about being honest in what we notice versus what we may not want to accept. We turn a blind eye because it’s simply too hard to acknowledge. Like the hidden poor. The homeless. The marginalized. The mentally ill. Those who fall into multiple categories and for whom there are no simple solutions. But they deserve to be seen. Little can be done until we are willing to say, “I know you are there. I see you.”

That type of seeing is a choice. That’s the good news. It means we can change things. We can extend a hand of friendship to the lonely, we can feed the hungry, and we can draw in those whose circumstances have left them feeling like they are on the outside. We can reach out and let people know, “We know you are there and we see you.” Because not seeing is not an option.

That’s my outlook.

“Phishing” “smishing,” “vising” and “pharming” are just a few of the ways criminals can gain access to personal information through your computer or smartphone. Identity thieves can use harvested information to open fraudulent bank or credit card accounts, take out loans, or even rent apartments. Here are some fraud scams to watch out for: Phishing. This is where you receive an email, supposedly from a trusted source like a government agency, bank or

retailer, that asks you to supply or confirm account information, log-in IDs or passwords.

Theses imposters are “fishing” for your personal information.

Legitimate organizations never ask you to verify sensitive information through a nonsecure means, such as email.

There are two types of phishing: clone phishing (previously-delivered, legitimate email with a malicious attachment or link), and spear phishing (targets specific individuals or companies sent from a known user).

Smishing (for “Short Message Service”). Smishing is like phishing, only it uses text messages sent to your cellphone. If you’ve ever received texts from a random number asking you to be a “mystery shopper for $500 a week?” or telling you that you’ve “won a free vacation?”, chances are it could be a smishing scam. Even if you don’t share any information, just by responding you’re verifying that your phone number is valid, which means it could be sold to others who will try and trick you into their scams.

Vishing (Voice Phishing). In vishing scams, live or automated callers pose as your bank or credit card issuer and call under the guise of fixing a problem (like theft or overdrawn accounts), and attempt to extract personal or account information. Keep a list of tollfree service numbers for all financial companies you use so you can call them directly without fearing you’ve been given bogus information. If the person on the other end of the phone is attempting to coerce you into sharing your information, chances are they are fraudsters.

Vishing can include tax scams- a phone call claiming to be the Canada Revenue Agency. Many times they tell you that you owe “back taxes” as a result of an audit and that they must be paid immediately to avoid a fine or a warrant for your arrest. Often times fraudsters suggest payment through methods such as gift cards.

Another example of vishing is the lottery scam, where people are advised over the phone that they are the win-

ner of a large lottery or sweepstakes, but prior to receiving winnings, they must first pay an upfront fee (but no winnings are ever actually received). It’s a good rule of thumb to never give out credit card information over the phone unless you initiated the call.

Pharming. With Pharming, hackers redirect you from a legitimate website to an imposter site where your personal information is harvested (“farmed”). Social networking sites are increasingly being targeted, so always be wary of open links- even from trusted friends- because their accounts may have been hacked.

A few tips for spotting risky emails and texts: • Beware of subject lines and body copy that uses ominous

or threatening language (e.g., “your credit card has been suspended”).

• A lack of a personalized salutation or closing details (e.g.

“Dear Valued Customer”) may indicate a fraudulent message.

• Watch for typos, poor grammar, punctuation, capitalization consistency and other warning signs that it’s not legitimate.

• Scroll your mouse over any embedded links before clicking to check for suspicious domain ending like “.be.”

• Verify that an alert or request for information is legitimate by looking up the company’s phone number and calling it yourself.

• Make sure your anti-virus or anti-spyware product is updated.

Asthma is a chronic lung condition.

Inflammation, increased mucus, and muscle tightening cause the airways to narrow, and as a result, air can’t move through the lungs as well as it should, which makes it difficult to breath. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global Asthma Network, as many as 334 million people in the world may have asthma. Over 3 million Canadians suffer from this condition.

The cause of asthma is poorly understood, but it may be partly inherited. Everyone’s lungs are sensitive to different things such as pollen, air pollution, or strong chemicals. In simple terms, people with asthma have lungs that are more sensitive than average. There are 3 processes in the lungs that produce asthma symptoms. First, the inner linings of the airways become inflamed.

They swell up, leaving less room for air to pass through.

Second, the muscles around the airways can tighten, closing them further. Finally, the airways produce mucus in response to the inflammation, clogging the shrunken tubes.

Asthma is in part an allergic response. It may be triggered by some external substance that particularly irritates your lungs. These

triggers are often small protein particles called allergens.

Some people are sensitive to more than one trigger. Common allergens include: animal dander, cockroach particles, grass, tree, and ragweed pollen, house dust mites, and moulds. Other people can get an asthma attack from something they swallow rather than breathe. Examples of these triggers include: ASA* and other anti-inflammatory medications, nuts or shrimp, or preservatives found in some drinks or foods. Asthma attacks can also be triggered by non-allergic irritants, such as: laughing hard, crying, shouting, smog and smoke, breathing cold air, vigorous exercise, viral infections such as the common cold or the flu and smells (e.g., paint fumes, perfumes, and cleaning products).

While most people develop asthma as children, adults can become asthmatic by being exposed to allergens, irritants, or occupational sensitizers for a long time. People who work with the following products may be at increased risk: antibiotics, cotton and flax, detergents, foams and paints, grains and cereals, and insulation and packaging materials.

Symptoms and Complications Some children feel an itch on the back of the neck just pri-

Warning signs include sore throat, dark circles under the eyes, feeling tired or irritable, or a change in the colour of your face. Asthma varies in its severity. Regardless of the severity, typical asthma symptoms include: chest tightness, coughing, shortness of breath and wheezing. With more severe asthma, these symptoms may occur at night.

A really severe asthma attack is life-threatening. Even if some air is coming in, deadly carbon dioxide builds up in the blood.

If you or a family member can’t breathe and the normal medication isn’t working, call 911 or your local emergency number.

There’s no cure for asthma.

Its’ a chronic condition that can last a lifetime. The goal of asthma treatment is to keep you as symptom-free as possible. This includes being able to engage in normal activities, keeping the use of rescue medications down (less than 4 doses per week), having no daytime and night time symptoms, and eliminating school or work absenteeism due to asthma. Flyers retain top spot with 7-5 win over Cougars Lynne Bell

Current Big Six League champions - the Wawota Flyers - retained top spot in the league with a 7-5 win over the Carlyle Cougars at the Carlyle Sports Arena, Friday, Nov. 17.

Fans were treated

to a hard-hitting hockey game, as Wawota goalie Scott Knelson and Carlyle netminder Tyler Fehrenbach fended off strong offences from each team.

Wawota opened up scoring with a goal by Kent Sauter, assisted by Kevin Lincoln and Ryan Taylor.

The Flyers followed up that first-period goal when Riley Riddell scored a single, followed

by Kevin Lincoln. Both goals were assisted by Kent Sauter.

The Cougars’ Cooper Fox scored twice, with assists from Ben Johnstone and Brayden Librion.

Cooper Fox added a goal in the second period, assisted by Brandon Lequyer. Ben Johnstone also scored for the Cougars, with an assist by Cooper Fox. Wawota also added two goals in the second period, with Taylor Ernst scoring once, assisted by Dylan Lamontagne; followed by a goal from Riley Riddell, assisted by Justin Lamontagne.

During the third period, Ben Johnstone scored the final goal for the Cougars, assisted by Cooper Fox and Kelly Currie.

Wawota cinched the win with a goal from Justin Lamontagne, assisted by Ryan Taylor and Riley Riddell. The final goal for the Flyers came from Riley Riddell, assisted by Taylor Ernst and Kevin Lincoln.

The Cougars’ next home games are Friday, Nov. 24 against the the Midale Mustangs and Saturday, Nov. 25 when they host the Carnduff Red Devils. Both games take place at 8 p.m. at the Carlyle Sports Arena.

Tammie Riddell Sports Contributor Friday night’s game in Redvers was nothing less than magnificent. The Cougars attacked in the first 30 seconds of the period and held the Rockets scoreless until 11:55, when they got one by our players.

Redvers then scored a couple quick goals to end the period 3-1.

The second period saw the Cougars pouncing and gnawing on the Rockets. The Cougars scored 4 goals in the period, while Redvers scored 1, ending

the period 4-5 for the good guys. The third period saw lots of skating, passing and shots on goal.

Redvers scored at 8:24 to tie the game.

Carlyle answered back shortly after with a goal to take the lead. The Rockets still had some gas to burn and scored with 2:25 left in the third to end the game in a tie.

The Atoms are off to a tournament in Rocanville on Saturday and play Oxbow in Alameda at 12:00 on Sunday. Come out and support the local boys and community rinks!

Keller leads star-studded NHL rookie class

Again. No one knows if it will be a hobbling return or a heroic return, but Tiger Woods, he of the polarizing love-himor-hate-him persona, returns to action Nov. 30 at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. The tournament features a limited field (18 golfers) and it will be overcovered to the ex-

treme by Golf Channel, who know what golf fans want.

Many will hope he shoots lights out and shows signs of a return to greatness. Others — those who despise him, for a variety of reasons — will be hoping that, again, he falls flat on his face.

At age 42 (he’ll be 43 Dec. 30), the calendar is working against Woods.

His health is working against him. His recent idleness will work against him. Knowing the whole world is watching will work against him.

But the greatest (or maybe second-greatest) golfer of all time has faced mountains of pres-

sure in the past, and, until his last major title in 2008, passed almost all of them. But after numerous surgeries and personal problems, the dominating Woods of 1996-2008 is far in the rearview mirror. The Woods the world sees now is a broken-down has-been with perhaps unrealistic determination to get his game back toward the top of the competitive world.

Retired tour player Lanny Wadkins is in the camp hoping Woods has a successful return, telling Jaime Diaz of golfdigest.com: “Frankly, it’s amazing to me how many people almost seem like they want him to be done. Why would

you want him gone? All he does if he comes back and plays is make our game better. Can you imagine if Tiger could come back … and win tournaments, competing with these kids today?

Carlyle’s Southern Plains Co-op gas station had the crowd cheering before the on-ice action got underway at the Carlyle Cougars - Wawota Flyers game, Friday, Nov. 17 in Carlyle.

As part of its “Fuel Good Day” promotion, the Coop donated $2,785 to the Carlyle Sports Arena.

Matt Smyth of Southern Plains Co-op said: “On September 15, the Southern Plains Coop and Federated Co-op - with the help of this

wonderful community - raised $2,785 during our ‘Fuel Good Day’ at our gas station.”

“For every litre purchased this day, 10 cents was donated to the Carlyle Sports Arena. Here at the Co-op, we are part of your community and giving back.”

Commissioner Colin Wilson said: “Trent Johnston put in a tremendous amount of effort, heart and soul into this competition. The planning for this weekend began a year and a half ago.”

The Carlyle Cougars Shane team coaches are: Shane Valentine, Evan Bloomfield and Scott Nicholson.

Gordon F. Kells High School Volleyball season comes to an end Well an unbelievable season ended in a 4th place finish for the GFK Sr. Girls’ Volleyball Team. Curling, wrestling, and basketball all start this month.

Fitness Club is Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, every week from 7:45 – 8:30AM. All fitness levels are welcome.

We currently have two parents on our School Community Council. We would like to have more parents on the council, so if you can spare one hour a month to support your school’s work on its school plan, it would be greatly appreciated.

The next meeting will include a review of this reporting period and the SCC will provide recommendations on how we will move forward from here. In this reporting period we’ve sent report cards home to grade 7 – 9 parents but we will not be sending report cards out to 10 – 12 parents because they can access student results and attendance on-line at any time. If you would like a printed copy, please phone the school and we’ll mail a report card out to you.

Don’t let the cold bit this winter

It’s the season for cold and snow. Although this can be a fun time of the year, there are certain safety precautions that should be taken to make sure that your family is safe from the cold.

It is important to dress properly for the weather. Here are some tips: • Dress your child in layers. This makes it is easy to add or take off a layer, depending on the temperature.

• Cover your child’s

head with a warm, close-fitting hat that protects the ear lobes.

• Neck tubes are safer than scarves. If a scarf must be used, make sure that it is tucked into the child’s jacket.

• Pay attention to wind chills. Wind speeds up heat loss in the body.

• Remove wet clothes immediately to avoid any additional chilling.

• Infants in car seats should not be dressed in layers or in thick clothes.

Instead, cover your baby with warm blankets af-

ter securing them in the car seat. This makes it easier for you to regulate their temperature so that they don’t get too hot. It also ensures that there is no extra padding between your baby and their harness. The extra padding under the straps could make them become loose in the event of an accident, possibly leading to injuries.

Restricting the use of neonicotinoids

By Calvin Daniels If you are a farmer you no doubt have been following the issues popping up around neonicotinoids.

Neonicotinoids (sometimes shortened to neonics) are a class of neuro-active insecticides chemically similar to nicotine, notes Wikepedia. In the late 1990s neonicotinoids came under increasing scrutiny over their environmental impact when their use was linked in a range of studies to adverse ecological effects, including honeybee colony collapse disorder (CCD) and loss of birds due to a reduction in insect populations.

In 2013, the European Union and a few non EU countries restricted the use of certain neonicotinoids.

The studies into the impact of Neonicotinoids on bees are not black and white, but the decision in the EU illustrates governments are at nervous.

That nervousness is created by realities.

The first is a concern by consumers, which as a group has become quite reactionary in terms of any hint of farm chemicals impacting the environment. Even when solid science suggests the threat is minimal consumers are largely unconvinced as the world tends to be leery of science these days.

Consumers are voters, so governments listen.

Then there is the suggestion neonicotinoids impact bee populations which are a key food plant pollinator.

Scientists have conducted dozens of studies on neonicotinoid seed treatments and the potential impact on bee health, but now new research from closer to home are suggesting neonicotinoids are having a negative impact in terms of our environment.

Reported by the Western Producer recently, researchers at the University of Saskatchewan have found that canola seed coated with imidacloprid, a type of neonicotinoid, can be toxic to songbirds.

“Imidacloprid dosed birds exhibited significant declines in fat stores and body mass and failed to orient correctly,” the scientists wrote in a study published Nov. 9 in the jour-

But, the weather sure makes it feel like we’re well into winter already.

Jim and Amaret Smyth had the opportunity to celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary with family and friends on Oct. 21. Approximately 50 people came to enjoy lunch and tea with the couple, who are now residing at “The Bentley” in Regina.

On Nov. 2, Kennedy Langbank School hosted their first Volleyball Tournament since 2014.

Teams from Grenfell and Broadview came to take part in the tournament. Our two teams

played very well. And as a result, the tournament concluded with a “dream game” that saw the two Kennedy Langbank teams playing each other.

So, we won!

To celebrate the tremendous effort that the kids put into the game this year, the volleyball season “officially” ended with a game against the parents on Nov. 14. I wasn’t able to be there to take part. But, from all reports, this was another “win-win” afternoon.

Nov. 2 was also the day when some of the ladies took advantage of an opportunity to enjoy a “Night Out”.

The “Ladies Night Out” is a fundraiser that this

year was held to benefit both the Kennedy Rink and the Moose Mountain Rodeo Association.

About 50 people took part in the event, which included supper, a number of games and prizes, and dancing.

Welcome home to Carrie Stevens. Carrie has returned to Kennedy and moved into the Leisure Lodge Plus here in town.

This is our ‘carry-out’ fundraiser that allows groups to carry out our customers’ groceries from our store for tips; all of which will be contributed to that particular group’s cause.

Alida News Submitted by Edel Cowan

The Alida community is sorry to bid farewell to some of our residents who have left our area to make their new home elsewhere. Arlene Mailhiot has moved to Alameda to be nearer to family members and we welcome her grandson who is staying at the farm. Bud Phenix moved to Carlyle to be closer to his family – we’ll miss seeing you around the coffee shop Bud. Don and Susan Fuller who have moved to take up residence in Wawota, their son Andrew remains living at the farm.

We wish you all the very best in your new homes.

The Alzheimer’s Coffee Break hosted at the Golden Age Centre on Nov. 9 by some of their senior members was another success again this year. A total of $334 was collected from the collection boxes which were set up among the business and from donations received at the coffee break. Appreciation goes out to all donors for their donations. We will always remember the moto – “Forget Me Not”.

There was a good crowd (62) who attended the Senior Supper at the Alida Hall on Nov. 9 which is hosted annually by the Alida Lions Club. They served a very delicious beef and ham supper with all the trimmings, salad and desserts. Great work guys.

Yvonne Dzuba and Glennis Peterson, both of Weyburn were guests at the Senior Supper on

Thursday and they also visited in the area for a couple of days.

Eleanor Harrison and Daryl Harrison had visited in Saskatoon with son/brother Dale and his wife Lorraine. Dale sent a message home to say “Hi” to everyone back in Alida. “Hi” right back to you Dale – take care.

Faye Walker spent the long weekend (Nov. 10-13) visiting in Saskatoon with her family, daughter Deidre, Jeff Nickel and granddaughters Olivia, Abby, Claire and Piper. She introduced her new little puppy ‘Moo’ to the granddaughters. Wonder if she’ll be able to bring puppy back home?

Gray and Edel Cowan attended the funeral of her uncle Arthur Nelson in Redvers on Nov. 11 at the Lutheran Church.

Following the service the internment was held at Dannevirke Cemetery and also at this time they had the internment of his wife Gerda Nelson, who had passed away in 2014. Luncheon was then enjoyed with everyone renewing friendships and visiting.

Jeff Cowan, Regina spent the long weekend (November 11-12) visiting with his parents, Gray and Edel, and with his brother, Tim, Shelly and Ainsley, as well as visiting with friends. He also attended the funeral in Redvers on Saturday.

Daniel Mailhiot was home from Thailand to visit with his parents

Prudent and Joey and siblings, Chelsey and Skylar for a few days. Tyler Mailhiot (Medicine Hat) was also home over the weekend to visit with the family. Both boys were here to attend their grandfather, Arthur Nelson’s funeral on Nov. 11.

Tim, Shelly Cowan and daughter Ainsley travelled to Minot on Nov. 12 where they visited with the Nilsen family and Ainsley had a dental appointment on Monday before they returned back home.

Word was received that Mary Laird had passed away Nov. 13 in North Battleford, SK. Her funeral was held Nov. 18. The Lairds lived in Alida from 1955 until they retired and moved to North Battleford in 1991. Condolences are extended to the Laird family and friends.

Gary and Brenda Junk spent a week visiting in Alberta with their family, Jody, Jill Junk and boys as well as with Kara Junk and her daughter Morgan. They enjoyed watching the grandsons play hockey before returning home on Nov. 13. They were accompanied by Kara who visited with other members of the family here in the Alida area, as well as Grandma Dot in Carnduff and Grandma Rose in Oxbow before returning to Sylvan Lake.

Congratulations to David and Shirley Brimner on their 50th anniversary. They celebrated at the Wawota Drop In last Saturday with a come and go tea in the afternoon and a social evening.

The businesses on Railway Ave. have been busy this last while hosting the bus ladies. The first bus arrived here on Sunday originating in Virden. There were 17 on the bus and they stopped in Elkhorn, Montmarte, Candiac, Kipling, Wawota and Fairlight. There were 2 buses on 17th and 18th coming from Regina. There will also be two buses on the 24th and 25th. This is a good opportunity for the city ladies to have a taste of small town shopping and hospitality.

On Nov. 7 several people gathered at the Free Methodist to help pack 87 Samaritan Purse Shoe Boxes this year. Evelyn Green and Deb Phillips organize this worthwhile venture each year.

A crowd of more than 120 people enjoyed the musical presentation by Country Blend. The five piece group performed at The United Church on Nov. 16. Proceeds are to help pay off the debt for the

enjoyed a three week trip to Switzerland. They visited with their many family members and renewed acquaintances with their friends. Several of their friends from here enjoyed a two week visit there also. Those travelling to Switzerland were Chris and Brandi Russill, Sheldon and Christine Wilson, and Earl and Danielle Bourhis from Kennedy.

Members of Maryfield St. Andrews United Church travelled to Wawxota last Sunday where they worshipped with the Wawota congregration, enjoyed a pot luck noon meal and then attended the Crossroads Board meeting.

David Hill read the Honor Roll of Maryfield dead; and Lyle Adair for Fairlight. The hymns were especially suited to our troubled world; O God Our Help In Ages Past, and Let There Be Peace On Earth. Sask Motor Vehicle theft statistics Kelly Running Observer Staff

RCMP Staff Sergeant Darren Simons released information regarding statistics from 2016 on motor vehicle thefts.

Simons explains that 50 percent of all vehicles stolen reportedly had the keys in them and another 22 percent were unsure if they keys were in them or not.

“In Southern Saskatchewan, which is our area, 53 percent of vehicles stolen had the keys in the vehicle,” he stated.

Trucks are the mostly commonly stolen vehicle and 80 percent of vehicles are stolen outside of Regina and Saskatoon areas.

Males, aged 20-29 years old are the most common group of people to be involved in a theft of a vehicle.

“We ask the public to assist us by securing your vehicle, not leaving keys inside of the vehicle or where they are easily accessible,” Simons stated.

“Many people will hang their keys inside of their garage where the vehicle is parked and we recommend moving them to a more secure location.”

Give wildlife a brake Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation launches Phase 2 of the 2017 Public Safety Campaign Saskatchewan’s deer are on the move, and the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) is appealing to motorists to be more alert while driving through areas that deer inhabit.

Whitetail and mule deer around the province are in the middle of the rut, a six week - long breeding season that peaks around the end of November which means that more and more deer will be crossing the roadways.

October, November and December account for the highest number of vehicular collisions with deer throughout the year. Deer/vehicle collisions can be both dangerous and costly (over $55 million in claims in 2016), including the potential for personal injury or fatality.

Over 10,000 deer were killed in 2016 as well.

mind motorists to pay attention to highway signs depicting deer crossings and also to just be more alert when driving through areas with higher deer populations, said SWF executive director Darrell Crabbe.

“Drivers should be especially vigilant at dawn, at dusk, and through the night when deer are more mobile and less visible”.

June 17, 1926 - November 10, 2017 It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Mother, Eva, 91 years young at Diamond House, Warman SK, formerly of Manor/Saskatoon, SK. Survived by her children: Ardelle (John) Entwistle, Caron (Randy) Seivewright, Sandra Geysen (Bob Hume), Brenda (Larry) Kazakoff, Brent (Gerri) Geysen, Kim (Dave) Kuyath, brother-in-law, Joe Marshall, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also cherished by her 17 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Predeceased by her loving husband (Louis) of 57 years, parents (Maren and Mads Jensen), mother and father-in-law (Catharina & Louis), four sisters, one brother, and numerous in-laws. Eva was born in Denmark in 1926 and immigrated to Canada in 1927. She grew up on her family farm near Walpole, SK, then taught grades 1-8 in a one-room school. She married Louis in 1947, spending the next 30 years farming south of Manor, retiring to Manor in 1977, and moving to Saskatoon in 2001. From a young age Mom was very artistic and musically talented. She excelled in everything she attempted, loved to travel, and had a great zest for life. Mom was known for her open-arms hospitality, her ready smile, her loving nature, and quick wit. She saw good in everyone and her positive outlook on life made her glass always “half full”, never “half empty”.

She was the very de�inition of love and kindness. She made many special friendships throughout the years because of her compassion, concern, and love for others. We have been so blessed and are grateful for all that she brought to our lives. She will be sadly missed and forever in our hearts. A very special Thank You to the Home Care/Palliative nurses, all the caring staff at Diamond House and her many friends at Chalet Gardens. In keeping with mom’s wishes, there will not be a funeral; rather, a private family interment at a later date. In lieu of �lowers, donations can be made to CNIB, SK. St Augustine said that “temporary punishments are suffered by some in this life only, by others after death, by others both now and then; but all of them before that last and strictest judgment”.

When we think about dying and judgement, are we afraid? In my front entrance I have a plaque that says Fürhte dich nicht, denn ich habe dich erlöst! Which means: Fear not, I have redeemed you. We want to become worthy of so great a love. Nothing unclean will be in the presence of God who is pure love.

Purgatory, the final purification, will not be a great surprise to us, especially if we have already begun the process on earth. I can picture the Father, waiting with his arms outstretched.

Pause for Reflection

Some will have difficulty with the very title of this column. Purgatory is an often misunderstood concept and can be troubling even to people of faith. Let me share some experiences, stories and truths that may help.

Saint Catherine of Genoa explains, “As for paradise, God has placed no doors there. Whoever wishes to enter, does so. An all-merciful God stands there with His arms open, waiting to receive us into His glory.”

Saint Catherine goes on to explain that the divine presence is so pure that any soul with still the least imperfection will seek purification before entering into God’s presence.

Which brings me to one of my favourite illustrations of purgatory I used in an earlier article: The story is told of a promiscuous young man, given to drugs and alcohol abuse, careless of personal hygiene and appearance. One day this youth sees a beautiful woman. His attraction to her is overwhelming, but he realizes he is totally unworthy of her. He decides then and there that he will change his life around. In anticipation of her love, he cleans up his appearance, goes on a rehabilitation program for his chemical dependencies, gets a job and cleans up his life.

When we meet the Lord, the mere presence of the God’s Goodness will make us want to become perfect, to be worthy of that eternal union, that eternal love. We know some of the absolute principles involved in God’s love for us. And that brings me to another great explanation of what purgatory is like.

Professor Johannes Quasten, Roman Catholic theologian of the last century, shared this explanation. The ancient churches of the Middle East said that when someone dies and they
