CFY Girls Group’s Carry Out at Co-op

Cornerstone Family and Youth’s Girls Group raised $1,300 for girls programming by partnering with Carlyle’s Southern Plains Co-op grocery store for their ‘Cash For Carry Out’ fundraiser. Girls Group members were on hand at Carlyle’s Co-op from March 24-30 to carry out customers’ purchases. Voluntary donations could be made via a tip jar or electronically, according to Carlyle Southern Plains Branch Manager, Derrick Edwards. “The idea originated with our grocery manager, Chris Kelloway,” says Edwards. “It’s been used as a successful method of fundraising in his hometown, Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Artemis Dance has successful weekend at Regina competition

By Kelly Running with information submitted by Artemis Dance Artemis Dance, based out of Redvers, had a very successful weekend (April 1st and 2nd) in Regina at Dance Extravaganza. This is their second year competing at the high caliber competition.

Each week approximately 150 dancers from Redvers and the surrounding area attend classes at the new-to-2017 Artemis Dance Studio located at 30 Souris Ave. Redvers. This dance family has been together since its humble beginnings of approximately 25 students in 2003.

Of these dancers, nearly 100 took part in the competition. Artemis owner/operator, Amber Sylvestre, along with her close friends and colleagues: Phoebe Douglas, Meg Brown, Jordon Colleaux and their ever important student helpers: Kelsey Van Sprundel, Madison Lovell and Bailey Garnier, were all pleased with the abilities the dancers displayed at the competition.

“They did not disappoint!” Sylvestre exclaimed.

“Many groups received a mark of Diamond, which is the highest honour possible and represents 90 to 100 per cent, with lots of Golds and a few Silvers scattered in there too. More important than just good marks though, all the dancers had improved and grown since the previous competition in Weyburn held in mid-May.” Their abilities caught the eye of the adjudicators as “the Senior Tap Group ‘Smooth Criminal’ winning not only the High Point Tap Trophy, but also the High Point Trophy for the entire competition with a mark of 92.5,” Sylvestre stated. “The Junior Jazz Dance ‘Do You Love Me’ won High Point Jazz Trophy closely following with a mark of 92, as well as the Choreography Award 5-11 Years, and Intermediate Jazz ‘Disturbia’ received the trophy for Adjudicator’s Choice.”

Sylvestre was also particularly excited about another award, which she describes as a “crowning achievement.” Artemis earned the Out of Town Sportsmanship Award, “something the entire studio can take pride in!”

“This award is given not by the adjudicator, but by the volunteers of the competition to the studio that they feel displays the most overall kindness, positivity and sportsmanlike behavior,” Sylvestre explains.

In addition to group awards there were also numerous individuals who earned recognition by the judge, Sylvestre added, “Jaycee Gervais and Kalysa Richardson both received a “Showmanship Award” which was a gift certificate to Dancers’s Den in Regina, Payton Hollinger won the ‘Sparkle Award’ and landed herself a shiny pair of Hillberg and Berk earrings, and first year dancer Shane Sanborn - you may have seen his mom’s post on Facebook as it’s almost gone viral - shone bright enough that the adjudicator gave him a CDTA Dance Jam Scholarship.”

The upcoming week for the Artemis Dance group includes preparation for the final competition of the year in Regina at the end of this month, where the senior group, as well as select solos and duos, will compete.

The following weekend and 7, will be the annual Solo/Duo/Trio Recital on Saturday, May 6, and the Group Recital of “New York, New York” will be held on Sunday, May 7.

Tanya Robertson’s Sesquicentennial Quilt Lynne Bell

Tanya Robertson is celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary with a sesquicentennial quilt - which she designed and created to pay homage to this country and its people.

The owner of Sew & Sews fabric store in Carlyle says the 64” by 74” quilt was “a labour of love - something I did for me, because I’m a proud Canadian.”

“It took me a lot longer (to make) than I wanted it to,” adds Robertson.

“I bought the fabric from a Canadian company in September 2016. I started blocking out the pattern, which took a while because I would do it between customers at Sew & Sews and I also have three kids I run with,” she laughs.

“The pattern is a mix of Canadian images and symbols which translate into something uniquely Canadian,” explains Robertson. “There’s an RCMP panel, a Canadian flag, a Saskatchewan flag and a few other things that are straightforward.”

“But there are also geometric symbols and quilting symbols which have special meanings inspired

by Canada.”

“There’s a friendship star, because Canadians are notorious around the world for their friendliness and generosity,” says Robertson. “And there’s flying geese blocks, a Canada block and a Saskatchewan flag.”

Robertson’s creation also pays tribute to Canada’s Indigenous peoples.

“There’s a medicine wheel - a symbol highly regarded in our First Nations’ culture - appliqued onto a snowball block,” she says. “And there’s also a Rail fence/Metis block, because both the railroad and the Metis people were integral parts of the formation of Canada.”

“The Metis flag that is used today has a lot of meaningful history behind it,” she adds. “The current - and most defining Metis flags consist of two variations - one is blue and one is red.”

“According to research I did, the Alberta Metis Historical Society states that the flag represents the Metis people with the infinity sign that symbolizes the coming together of the two cultures that came together to make up the Metis people.”

“I deal with a lot of First Nations people here at Sew & Sews, because we sell a lot of regalia supplies for their pow wow garments,” says Robertson.

“And I have First Nations connections with my own personal history.”

“And Saskatchewan is home,” she smiles. “So I paid tribute to this province in the quilt. To me, Saskatchewan people are very down-to-earth. I love this province, but as a whole, Canada has so much to offer and so much to celebrate and take pride in.”

Robertson says that the response to her creation has come from quilters beyond Saskatchewan.

“I’ve had a few offers to sell it,” she says. “But it’s not for sale; I’m keeping it.”

“I’ve had tons of compliments on it,” adds Robertson. “Quilters from all over have really responded positively to it, which is nice. A former teacher of mine - who now lives in Vulcan, Alberta - even got in touch, so that’s really gratifying. A few people have suggested that I enter it in quilt competitions, but I probably won’t, because that would mean sending it away.”

However, as a result of the interest in “Canada Celebrates!” Robertson sells both a quilt pattern and a kit – which includes a pattern and fabric needed to complete the quilt top.

“A lot of quilters are making their own ‘Canada Celebrates!’ quilt already,” she says. “It’s not a difficult pattern to complete. Some people are gifting them and some are keeping them as their own keepsake of this special year in our nation’s history.”

“I never started this project with the intent to sell it,” says Robertson. “It was something for me. But when you love what you do, you’re not looking for recognition for it; you just want to share it.”

“As Canadians, we should be proud of where we live and who we are. I was happy to do this project and proud to do it. We should all be proud of where we live and I hope the images in this quilt reflect that.”

“Click Before You Dig” and “Look Up and Live” the focus at SCGA annual Safety Breakfast Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance (SCGA) hosted its annual Safety Breakfast in Carlyle on Tuesday, April 4, in the morning at Carlyle Memorial Hall.

Attending the breakfast were construction workers, supervisors, business owners, rural municipalities, emergency responders, and anyone associated with any aspect of ground disturbance or working near overhead lines.

The Carlyle breakfast was one of 28 sessions held throughout the province and works to reduce accidental line hits throughout Saskatchewan promoting both phrases: “Click Before You Dig” and “Look Up and Live.”

Five steps to safer digging: 1. Always contact Sask 1st before digging: 1-866828-4888, sask1stcall.com, or download the Sask 1st Call app via the Apple Store or Google Play. Provide the exact location of the dig site, the type of work, and the start date. Also, remember not all facilities are registered with Sask 1st Call, so ensure you contact the proper channels.

2. Wait the required amount of time: develop both a work plan and perform a hazard/risk assessment including an emergency response plan.

3. Locate accurately: Confirm line locates and check the expiry date of the locates.

4. Respect the marks: ensure all previous steps have been taken, understand crossing agreements/ approvals, and conduct a tailgate safety meeting with workers prior to the start of work.

5. Dig carefully: if there’s been a change to the work plan, contact Sask 1st Call, ensure exposure of lines is done as required by facility owners, use safe excavation procedures in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety, ensure proper supervision, and in the event of damage contact the facility owner and call 911 in an emergency. Once the work is complete, clean up the site and ensure all is in order.

There are also both Provincial and Federal safety regulations, which employers are expected to know in regards to work. For more information on Provincial regulations call 1-800-567-7233 and for Federal call 1-800-641-4049.

In addition to this information presented at the breakfast in Carlyle, there was also a video which explained companies can register with STARS for $6 a day or $150 a year. The company would provide STARS with all information pertinent in case of an emergency as well as any available resources on site, from farms to corporations, so if an emergency does present itself STARS already has the information pertinent to that site including GPS coordinates of where it is.

Council considers property tax rates Lynne Bell

Carlyle Town Council met Wednesday, April 5 at The Carlyle Civic Centre, Council’s next-regularly-scheduled meeting will take place at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 10 at the Civic Centre Property taxes In order to meet budgetary requirements totalling $1,844,347, members of Town Council are currently considering four options regarding tax mill rates for properties within the Town of Carlyle.

Education property tax changes Council has received the Education Property Tax (EPT) mill rates for 2017, which are set by the Government of Saskatchewan. The new mill rates and estimated revenue from each property tax are as follows: For agricultural properties, the 2016 EPT mill rate was 2.67 with revenues of $39 million dollars.

The 2017 EPT mill rate for agricultural properties is now 1.43 with revenues projected to be $46.1 million dollars.

The 2016 EPT mill rate for residential properties was 5.03 with revenues of 324.7 million dollars.

The 2017 EPT mill rate for residential properties is 4.12 with projected revenues of 359.6 million dollars.

The 2016 EPT mill rate for commercial/industrial properties was 8.28 with revenues of 169.8 million dollars. The 2017 EPT mill rate for commercial/industrial properties is 6.27 with projected revenues of 193.8 million dollars.

The 2016 EPT mill rate for resource properties was 11.04 with revenues of 146.5 million dollars. In 2017, the EPT mill rate for resource properties is 9.68 with projected revenues of 147.4 million dollars.

Council renumeration Council renumeration rates have ben set until the end of the current council’s term in 2020. Renumeration per meeting for the mayor is $126.90 for 2017 from the previous rate of $120. For councillors, the 2017 rate is $93.50 from $85.

Bus service After a presentation by Dave MacDonald of Regina’s Mi-Bus Service, council agreed to endorse a proposal by Mi-Bus to offer a seasonal weekend passenger bus service between Kenosee Lake, White Bear and Carlyle. Carlyle Public Works praise Carlyle Fire & Rescue praised the efforts of Carlyle Public Works staff, who worked diligently throughout the winter to keep the area around the Firehall clear of snow. Their efforts allowed emergency personnel to continue to respond to calls in a timely fashion, regardless of weather conditions.

Daycare Council reviewed and approved the application for a town-owned, licensed daycare. This future project is in the exploratory stage. Although the application will first be placed on a wait list with the Province of Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Early Learning, the Town is already researching provincial funding for the project.

Remembering Vimy Ridge

It doesn’t seem that long ago, but 10 years have passed since my visit to Vimy Ridge for its 90th anniversary.

We learned about armies dug into trenches and battling over the same area, taking and retaking it and trying to take it again.

Vimy Ridge, in France, was a strategic hold the Germans Kelly Running commanded. It’s an escarpment, Observer Staff high ground which would protect the southern flank of the advancing Allied Army. Others had attempted to take it from the Germans since the beginning of the war, but none had succeeded.

The Canadians moved on April 9, 1917. All four divisions of the Canadian Corps – the first time this had happened in WWI – were there. They used a new tactic: the creeping barrage. Troops slowly advanced - 100 yards at a time - behind a barrage of artillery, gaining ground as the land just before them exploded. The units leapfrogged each other as they moved; men held the line as the next unit advanced to hold a new line, they continued like this behind the barrage, creeping forward.

On that first day the Canadians nearly took the entire ridge and on April 12, 1917, the Germans retreated. The campaign was quick; it was a great victory. They now had the high ground and it was one of the first times an enemy was dislodged along the Western Front from a fortified position.

We learned about all of this before we arrived and I don’t know what I really expected to see when we did; but we were warmly welcomed to the 250 acres of the former battleground where the Canadian National Vimy Memorial was erected.

The site was green, lush with grass, and trees speckled the countryside. It was eerily beautiful as the battle scars were covered by this fresh, new life; but, the scars were still evident. The land was pockmarked by the explosions – craters that had once been smoking holes – the majority of the area was roped off for unexploded munitions and to preserve the battlefield, reminding you that the beautiful, peaceful place you stood was once the site of a raging battle.

The trenches and tunnels welcomed tourists to see what it was like to stand in them, bringing a pit to their stomachs as they saw the past come to life in front of them, as the ghosts of history roamed the grounds.

As we walked, we came to an open grassy area where, at the highest point of the ridge, the memorial towers over all else. It’s quite beautiful and much thought was put into the design by Walter Seymour Allward. A 24 ft wall - an impenetrable wall of defence – is held by “The Defenders:” “Breaking of the Sword” and “Sympathy of the Canadians for the Helpless,” the former a desire for peace and the latter Canada’s ideals: helping the weak.

Twin pillars rise behind her, the “Chorus” carved into them: Faith, Hope, Truth, Honour, Charity, and Knowledge. At the base of the pillars is the “Spirit of Sacrifice” – a young dying soldier gazes upward, having thrown his torch to a comrade who holds it behind him, referencing John McCrae’s famous poem, “In Flanders Fields.” On the backside of the memorial is “The Mourning Parents.”

It really is quite something to behold.

Change our appetite... change our options They would come in a colorful box with a border of pretty spring flowers printed on the cardboard surrounding the cellophane which revealed the perfectly formed chocolate bunny inside. Around it’s neck was a fabric ribbon, and above its delicately carved nose was a yellow and blue candy to form a perfect little eye.

Oh how I loved those chocoShelley Luedtke late bunnies as a child. Ok...I still do. But like everything else, they have changed since I was little when I couldn’t wait for Easter morning for my parents to present us with the eagerly anticipated treat.

We received one from our grandparents, too. One year they gave us ones made of white chocolate. It was so pretty. The little bow and candy eye looked striking against the pure white colour of the bunny, but when I bit into it…I was sorely disappointed.

It didn’t taste the way I was used to since I was far more familiar with the milk chocolate variety. I didn’t finish eating that bunny—likely the only time that ever happened. I just didn’t have an appetite for white chocolate then. Actually my appetite for several foods has changed over the years. I am a much bigger fan of rice than I ever used to be, I have developed a casual friendship with raw vegetables, and yes…now I love white chocolate.

Our appetite is based on our desire to eat. Even if we aren’t particularly hungry, foods that are appealing can stimulate our appetite to satisfy a need or craving. Our appetite can certainly change over time. Exposure to new flavors, different medical conditions, or different thoughts on health can impact our enjoyment of food and indeed what we will have an appetite for. Although there is specific physiology behind why and when we eat--including the role of hormones and the hypothalamus--a lot of it has to do with behavior. Which is why some of our food preferences change over time. And perhaps our appetite for other things changes as well.

Or at least there might be the potential to transform our appetite for some things, not just what we put into our bodies but also what we put into our minds.

There are many people who operate on the notion that what they read, watch or listen to has little affect on them. I certainly did. But my appetite for a lot of that has changed, and so have my excuses, because we know the images, language and speech we are exposed to have an impact on how we think and feel.

Consider how often we hear someone, or ourselves, excuse a book, website, twitter account or movie by remarking that it’s not as bad as some of the other stuff out there. Really? Is that going to be our moral defence? It’s not as bad as something else?

If people and language are being degraded for comic or dramatic effect we can’t simply brush it off as harmless entertainment. There is harm. Harm to our minds. Harm to our sensibilities. Harm to the well-being of a culture that won’t stand up for decency.

We likely would not consider ingesting a dozen donuts while watching a movie, yet all the while could be exposed to the assault of dozens of insulting images and a barrage of vulgarities. We would know at what point our stomachs couldn’t take anymore, but what about our brains? Where is the point at which we say ‘stop’? When do we say we can’t ingest anymore because of what it is doing to our mind, our temperament, and sense of wellbeing? We are fooling ourselves if we think what we put into our brains doesn’t have the same impact of what we put into our bodies.

We all have the power to make choices for ourselves. As long as there is support for entertainment that degrades adults, sexualizes children, and treats vulgarity as every-day language these will continue to proliferate and be normalized. The power of the dollar speaks. What we demonstrate we have an appetite for is what we will be given to feed on. It’s not censorship. It’s sensible.

That’s my outlook.

Turning the lights on

It all started innocently enough. The little guy in kindergarten was telling his grandma and grandpa all about the eggs they were hatching at school. In this new age world his teacher was sending the kids videos of the hatching progress because, of course, Mother Nature wasn’t Jocelyn Hainsworth keeping the action limited to the hours of 9:00 to 3:30 Monday to Friday. As of suppertime last night the video showed they had two fluffy babies to their name.

This news led to Grandpa asking what was going to happen to the chicks when they were all hatched. The grandson had thought that everyone in the class should take one home, and it had to be explained that not everyone would want one. Or know what to do with one. He lives on a farm and feeds chickens and gathers eggs every day; it hadn’t occurred to him that everyone else doesn’t do the same thing.

This took us to a discussion of how few people know about these things. If the food production and distribution systems were to suddenly disappear there wouldn’t be many folks who would even know where to start to feed themselves. Of course from there we went straight into hearing Grandpa wax poetic about “the good old days”.

Now, this is not a new subject for our supper

table conversations. When the kids were growing up there was many a night that we were all regaled with stories of him having to “walk to school – up hill, both ways, in a snow storm, riding his pet dinosaur because horses hadn’t been invented yet.” And so on. And so forth.

I give you this background to show that her father’s age and experience is something that the little boy’s mother is well aware of. Or should be, at least. But as we (Grandma and Grandpa) carried on with this topic of conversation she fell silent; amazed at the things we were saying.

I think it started out with how these little chicks at school were being hatched under a light, using electricity. Of course she knew that this was a job mother hens would have done naturally, it just hadn’t occurred to her that there was no other way when her dad was little – they didn’t have power until he was in his teens. It wasn’t that she didn’t understand that there hadn’t been a time when houses didn’t have lights at the flick of a switch; the hard to believe part was that this had happened in her parents’ life times.

For myself, I couldn’t be sure. I couldn’t remember a time that the house I grew up in didn’t have power but I knew my grandparents didn’t have it when I was very young – I could remember them lighting coal oil lamps. Out came the local history book: only to find that there really wasn’t a specific mention of when the rural power grid came into being. I was in on the planning and preparation of that book.

Why on earth hadn’t we thought to give that very important achievement a notable segment in our history book? Was it just a misstep of planning?

Or does it mirror our daughter’s reaction – that electricity is such a constant in our lives that we forget that it hasn’t always been there?

With both my parents unavailable for comment I called my sister who was pretty sure that by the time mom and dad were married there was power at the farm we grew up on – so that was 1946. It is highly likely that we were ahead of other households because we lived along the main highway making it on the main route of the power grid as it was established – the farther you lived from the main line, the longer it took to access power. This was something that made sense to us old people but kind of amazed the 30 something whose experience of Sask Power as a business entity is to tell them when she moves so they will change the billing.

Later on in the evening, after our daughter and her two non-stop energy sources had gone home, I got to thinking about our place in history. My grandfather lived past his 100th birthday and I don’t know how many times I heard people say about him that he had been born in the horse and buggy days and lived to see the moon landing, but it is almost as amazing that in a much shorter span my generation has gone from lighting coal oil lamps to complaining about our Internet speed. I wonder what the little guy in kindergarten will see in his lifetime.

Tractor please The grass is greening up!

Spring is here I think! I wouldn’t know because this family just barely survived another stomach bug. That’s the second one in four months. Talk about unlucky! It was a doozy but I think we are on the mend. We have been spending a lot of time outside in the last few weeks, mostly getting ready for calving Krystyn Gillies season, which is in full swing.

We have a dozen or so little calves running around, which is way better than what we started with. The toddler is loving them, from a distance of course; most days when we go check, she’s waving at each and every cow, saying “hello cow, hello cow!” I love this time of year, new life, new calves, less snow and warmer, longer days. It is a lot of fun because the toddler is seeing the world through two year old eyes. She is a lot quicker, meaning the cat outside has to work a little harder to not be caught. Mind you, when she does get caught, she flops onto the ground and the toddler gathers her up and carries her all over the yard. For being a stray, she has really grown into a sweet little cat. She patiently hangs from the toddlers arms, watching the world go by, willing to be carried wherever. The toddler notices everything now. The moon up in the clear blue sky; she asks what it is and we tell her and she repeats it back to us. An airplane will fly over and she will drop everything she is doing to yell airplane and point to it if she can see it. It is so much fun to watch. She was rummaging through our storage shed the other day, pointing to her battery powered tractor. She said please about 37 times, so I dug it out only to remember the batteries came in last fall. I didn’t know where they were, so I bargained with her that she could ride her tractor the following afternoon after her daddy charged the battery up. Of course, that wouldn’t do. I heard the word tractor about 639 times before bedtime that night and thankfully my husband clicked one of them onto the charger after she finally shut her eyes for the night. First thing out of her mouth in the morning was that pesky tractor word. It took me all day to distract her but finally when 4:00 p.m. rolled around, daddy rolled in from work. When the thing finally started to turn it’s wheels, she was busy for over an hour. Around and around the yard she went. It isn’t the most powerful beast, so it gets

stuck on every rut and uneven bit of grass so she has to be constantly pushed out. It keeps us on our toes for sure. The following day, she decided her cat needed to go for a tractor ride too. She gathered it up and dumped her into the trailer behind said tractor and by the time she climbed into the seat to take off, the cat was long gone. She didn’t understand why the cat didn’t want a ride, so the next time she climbed into the seat, cat in arms and tried to head out that way. Of course, as soon as the tractor lurched forward, the cat scrambled and jumped to freedom, leaving the toddler sad and alone in her

seat. That only phased her for about three seconds before she was trying to run over whoever got in her way. It’s a darn good thing that she is cute if you ask me, because I am not entirely sure how many times one can be knocked on the shins before the tractor gets retired. I am sure this spring and summer will be busy as usual, keeping the toddler entertained, planning and planting the garden and sinking our teeth into our newest volunteer adventures. Before we know it the summer will come and go and we will be back into snowy weather. Too soon? Just kidding, enjoy the beautiful weather!

To All Community Organizations: The Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Grant Program is again available to community organizations.

The purpose of the program is to provide funds to volunteer organizations that provide programs and services in sport, culture and recreation. Funds are provided through the Town of Carlyle to maintain, improve and expand on programs and opportunities for people of all ages to derive the benefits from involvement in sport, culture and recreation activities. For this reason, only those expenditures that can be directly related to programming will qualify for grant assistance.

Submitted by Mickey Adams (Rebels Coach) The Red Coat Rebels ended their 2017 volleyball season undefeated, winning Gold in Division Two at the Saskatchewan Provincial Volleyball Championships in Saskatoon on April 9th.

The Rebels attended nine tournaments throughout the 2016-2017 club season. I am proud to report that the team medaled in seven of these tournaments - a tough accomplishment as there are many strong teams in the province.

These athletes are talented, hardworking and they never give up. The girls are not only skillful volleyball players, but also well rounded people.

They are genuine, respectful, and they support each other through the challenges that team sports inevitably bring. We believe in using volleyball as a means to prepare for life. The skills they learn on the court such as commitment, hard work, sacrifice, and dedication will transfer to the real-world and ultimately benefit them in their future.

There are three girls graduating this year, two of which are going on to play college volleyball.

Kayla Verity (Carnduff) has signed with Minot State University and Janai Ricard (Oxbow) is in the process of signing with Lethbridge College. Cheyanne Doud (Kipling) will be attending University in Ottawa to get a degree in Medical Sonography.

Next year we will miss their positivity, leadership and spirit and we wish them the best of luck in the next stage of their volleyball careers.

I would like to thank the assistant coaches Jackie Verity (Carnduff) and Blake Slykhuis (Carlyle) for their hard work and contribution to the team’s success. I would also like to thank the players for working so hard and believing in what we do. Thanks to the parents for their support throughout the season, and to everyone who supported our fundraising efforts and also to those that donated to our club.

It has been a memorable season for me and I am very proud of the girls for their success both on and off the court. We are looking forward to our summer camps and training sessions that will be commencing soon. Bring on next season!

The Southeast Vipers 17U team attended their final tournament of the season in Saskatoon.

The Provincial competition saw a total of 21 teams. The girls worked hard all year and finished Div. 2 Tier 1 5th place, 13th in the province overall.

Congrats to Weyburn Volleyball Club for finishing Div 1 6th and to the Oxbow Black Knights Volleyball Club for finishing Div 1 7th. Congrats to the 18U Rebels who finished Div 2 Tier 1 1st in the 18U division. A lot of strong volleyball coming out of the southeast.

Redvers Wildlife Archery Club sees success at provincial competitions Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Redvers Wildlife Archery Club recently saw a lot of success on the weekend of April 1st and 2nd in Prince Albert. The club of approximately 100 people sent 14 archers to the Junior Olympic Program (JOP) Championship - hosted on April 1st - and 17 archers to the Saskatchewan Archery Association Indoor Championship hosted on April 2nd.

“For us, a small community… with a club of 100, we took 14 archers to the JOP and 17 to the Sask Archery Association competitions, and that’s pretty big,” coach Tricia Pickard explained. “I was talking to someone from Swift Current, they’re a city, and they only had three competing. Then nine of ours made it into the final; it’s phenomenal.”

“We practice a lot,” Pickard added of those looking to compete. “They practice on regular days, then there’s Sunday practices, and they put in a lot of extra work; and that’s why we’re able to get into the top four, they’re prepared. We go over different skills and the way we practice lets those skills show through their nerves or equipment failures.”

Getting into the top four is a great accomplishment as the competition is tough with archers from across Saskatchewan shooting.

Pickard explained the JOP program is an incentive program directed at those 21-years and under.

Those competing earn badges, so they compete against others that are attempting to earn the same level of badge.

Archers in the JOP shoot 10 rounds of three arrows. The top four then make the finals and shoot another 30 arrows.

“The dedication, commitment and hard work each of these archers showed was phenomenal,” Pickard stated. “We worked very hard the last month to prepare and it paid off!”

“Almost everyone shot a personal best in competition… We had 9 of the 14 make it into the final round… To make it into the final round it is the top four archers in the category they are shooting in.

From there we brought home two first places, one second place, and five third places.”

Third place finishers: Kenneth Murray, Thomas LeNouail, Merrilee Murray, Brodi Fidelak, and Miles Nord “Behind the scenes we need to mention our coaches not only in their regular groups, but to Brian LeNouail and Ken Martel for numerous hours of extra practice, time spent figuring out equipment, and just the support given to these archers,” Pickard added.

On the Sunday, April 2, a total of 17 archers competed in the Saskatchewan Archery Association Indoor Championships: 12 youth and five adults.

This competition, instead of organized by badges as the JOP, it is set up through gender, age, and equipment.

This competition sees archers shoot two rounds back to back of 30 arrows each. Their score is then added up.

“We had some personal bests, challenges, and above all fun-filled moments,” Pickard said.

“The competition is fierce but we managed to bring home three gold and three bronze medals.”

Earning gold were Ken Martel, Merry Murray, and Daxson Pickard; while bronze was earned by David Murray, Hunter Rolufs, and Miranda Murray.

“As one of the coaches I am so proud of these archers,” Pickard exclaimed. “Our club is wonderful to see shoot on the line because they represent our club with such dignity and skill, it amazes me every time.”

The Redvers Wildlife Archery Club has been operating for many years, with 60 members being typical; but, over the past four years numbers have bolstered and it’s averaging 100 members each year. Their season is winding down now, but typically they operate from November to March or April.

Archers choose a time to shoot between Monday and Thursday, and stick to that throughout the season.

Each session has two coaches who assist.

“This year we decided to do a competitive group,” Pickard explained. “There’s some that just want to target shoot to practice for hunting or do some 3D shooting, but some of the kids were interested in competing, so we wanted to provide them that more competitive atmosphere.”

“I think that’s part of the reason our club has been doing so well, we don’t just target shoot or do 3D competitions, we kind of do it all depending what the person wants to get out of it,” Pickard said.

“It’s a sport for all ages, for families and friends, people can all

shoot together.”

They not only draw archers from Redvers, but from Carnduff to Arcola and everywhere between.

452 Fit welcomed to Redvers Kelly Running Observer Staff

For Krista Light, owning and operating a fitness facility has been a lifelong goal, which she has happily worked for and embraced with the opening of 452 Fit in Redvers.

452 Fit offers a variety of classes including yoga, children’s yoga, slow flow, circuit, kettle bell, and more.

Light is a yoga instructor and is currently training to be certified as a trainer, while other trainers also work out of the facility.

The gym has 24-hour access, which makes it a little bit easier to find time for fitness in a busy world.

Light credits her family with being able to accomplish this dream, thanking Jeremy Krainyk for all he’s done and continues to do.

Wanting to open a fitness facility was based on Light’s want to help people be comfortable with themselves.

“I hope to encourage people to find fitness early and to find a confidence in themselves,” Light stated. “I’m also big on positive body image. People can come here and feel comfortable when they’re working out.”

“I’m thrilled to be bringing a fitness facility to Redvers and I’m always happy to help with fitness and nutrition goals. I’m super pumped to be here.

Community support abounded in Redvers on Friday, April 7, as they celebrated a ribbon cutting at Silver Lotus Boutique.

Patricia Matthewson, along with her daughters Shayla and Makayla, have taken over from Patricia’s mother, Jocelyne Pedersen. Taking the former New Trend Clothing and turning it into Silver Lotus Boutique was a great experience as the family business grew now offering clothing, giftwear, home décor, jewellery, and refurbished furniture goods.

“We try to provide a unique shopping experience,” Patricia said.

“We have something for everyone and many unique items you can’t find just anywhere.”

“We have a lot of products that are give back programs and natural products, and we have many Canadian products as well.”

Silver Lotus Boutique officially opened on Friday, Sept.

23,2016, waiting to have their grand opening until April. Hosting snacks and beverages from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m., they made free draws every hour and for every $25 spent entered customers into a chance to win “an outfit of your choice.”

The ribbon cutting was held at 11 a.m. and customers were also

treated to cake.

If you grew up reading quintessential Canadian children’s books like Owls in the Family or The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be, you’re not alone.

Farley Mowat’s 40-plus books have been translated into 52 languages and have sold close to 17 million copies worldwide. But not all of this prolific author’s works were written for young readers. The vast majority of Mowat’s books were aimed towards adults and often broached the topic of the colonial impact on indigenous people and the natural world. Most of his works depicted Canadian landscapes and wildlife with vivid detail and a sympathetic eye.

Mowat spent parts of his childhood in Ontario and Saskatchewan and started writing before he hit his teens. As a young man he served overseas in the Second World War and was appalled by the horrors he witnessed. His time on the battlefield damaged his faith in mankind, and he turned to the natural world for solace. Back in Canada he enrolled at the University of Toronto and graduated in 1949 with a BA in zoology. Around this time, he took a job as a biologist for the government and travelled to the Northwest Territories with a team of scientists to monitor the declining caribou population. During his stay in Northern Canada, Mowat witnessed first-hand the poor living conditions of the Inuit. This experience inspired his first published novel, People of the Deer, released in 1952.

From the get-go of his literary career, Mowat was a polarizing figure. His non-fiction works were greatly embellished and he was accused of falsifying many of his autobiographical accounts. Despite the controversy, the impact of Mowat’s writing brought the issues he cared most about—destruction of the natural world and exploitation of indigenous nations by colonial forces—the attention he felt they deserved.

Of Mowat’s many works, Never Cry Wolf is perhaps the most well known. The 1963 novel played an important role in changing the public’s perception of wolves. The Canadian Wildlife Service received countless letters from the book’s readers, who implored the government to stop killing wolves. Twenty years after its publication, Never Cry Wolf was adapted for the screen and received widespread critical acclaim.

Despite the popular success that Mowat’s autobiographical works garnered, it’s his fiction for young readers that most impressed literary critics. The coming-of-age story Lost in the Barrens won a Governor’s General Award, and it too was later made into a movie.

After a writing career that spanned more than five decades, Farley Mowat passed away in 2014. He leaves us the legacy of his books and a better understanding of the value of Canada’s precious wilderness.

CANADA’S CHINESE COMMUNITY Chinese people first arrived in Canada in 1788 to help establish a trading post in Nootka Sound, near Vancouver Island, British Columbia. However, it was only in the 19th century that more substantial numbers of immigrants arrived from China. British Columbia was settled first, with many coming by way of San Francisco.

By the turn of the twentieth century, there were just over 17,000 Chinese immigrants in Canada; however, Chinese immigration was intentionally impeded by the Canadian government due to racist attitudes of the era.

A head tax was imposed that forced Chinese individuals coming into Canada to pay a fine, and the price was raised twice before the Chinese Immigration Act— known today as the more accurate Chinese Exclusion Act—of 1923 all but prohibited them from coming into Canada at all. These restrictions remained in place until 1947, and a formal apology was issued to the Chinese-Canadian community by then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper in 2006. The apology was accompanied by an announcement of financial compensation for survivors affected by the head tax.

Chinese Canadians faced discrimination in multiple ways, most significantly at the hands of employers, who paid them 50 per cent less than Caucasian workers. One of the biggest companies hiring them was the Canadian Pacific Railway. Working conditions were so abysmal that hundreds died as a result.

After 1947 things slowly began to change, and between 1999 and 2009, the Chinese were the largest group of immigrants coming to Canada. Today, Chinese Canadians represent one of the largest ethnic groups in Canada. They make up four per cent of our country’s population—over 80 per cent distributed in British Columbia and Ontario—and as of the 2011 National Household Survey, individuals who claimed full or partial Chinese heritage numbered close to 1.5 million. Chinese Canadians are an indispensable part of our cultural mosaic and have made notable contributions in science, the arts, academics, politics, entertainment and business.

There was a nice crowd that attended the RM of Reciprocity #32 annual ratepayers supper on Apr. 5 at the Alida Hall. Many ratepayers and invited guests enjoyed Marty Seymour, the guest speaker who spoke on the subject of Public Trust in Agriculture.

On Apr. 6 family and friends gathered at 361 Café to enjoy supper, camaraderie and help Dale Anthony celebrate his special birthday. Congratulations Dale, you are now officially on the government payroll.

Visiting with Dale and Holly Anthony on Apr. 6 and 7 was his brother Wayne Anthony from Moose Jaw. He also came to help celebrate Dale’s birthday.

Did you watch the curling this past week? Once again I was in my glory, watching the men show off their curling skill. Team Canada never completed 10-ends of curling during the round robin play (well maybe a couple of games out of 11), but boy during the Gold Medal game on Sunday it was a different story – nip and tuck to the very end.

Sweden surely did give them a game ending with Canada winning the Gold. Canada has really done well this year – both men and women winning World Gold – Hip Hip Hooray! We’re not done with curling just yet – the World Mixed Doubles are being held in Lethbridge and coverage starts on Wednesday on TSN. It’s a different style of curling with only two players per team, but should be interesting just the same – Go Canada Go. Speaking of sports – did you also watch the World Women’s Hockey Championship? That was another nail biting game to watch – Canada against USA – it even went into overtime. Great skilled hockey played by both teams – but unfortunately Canada lost bringing home the Silver medal. Oh well – we just have to wait until next year now. A game well played.

We are already a good week into April – where does the time. Nice to see the bright sunshine, but temperature wise it’s still chilly, especially in the morning. A lot of yard work is still being done now,

so great to see that a new season is being. There’s some flooding happening in the area, surely hope that it has soon crested and one can relax and put the pumps away. Hope no serious flooding has happened in your area this spring. Easter and Spring break is just around the corner so things will be looking up, and lots of activity going on outside as

HORTNESS (NEE BURNS), Muriel Lorraine - September 26, 1929 to April 6, 2017 It is with sadness that we announce mom's peaceful passing (COPD) at Jubilee Lodge in Edmonton. She will be lovingly remembered by her children; Lorraine Hortness of Calgary, Jack (Doreen) of Rocky View, Harold (Eileen Bell) of Edmonton and Kevin (Debbie Richer) of Sherwood Park; her granddaughters Jessica Hortness of Edmonton, Sara (Chris) Buchanan of Airdrie and Megan Hortness of Airdrie; her great grandson Seth Buchanan of Airdrie and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mom was predeceased by her husband Harold Otto Hortness in 1997, an infant daughter Myrna Lee in 1954 and all of her siblings: Bill (Ilene) Burns, Bud (Thelma) Burns, Marianne (Jack) Bennett, Doris (Gordon) Campbell and Elsie Grey Wheeler (Bill Kilpatrick).

Thanks to the 1st floor staff at Jubilee who took such good care of her for the last 2 1/2 years.

Mom is being cremated and will be buried beside dad and Myrna in the Manor cemetery in June.

Sincere thanks for words of condolence and sharing memories in our recent loss.

Grandma Jarvis was our best cheerleader. At 101 years young, she continued to keep track of us all . . . remembering birthdays, following sports activities, seeing if we were safe in stormy weather, etc. Her smiles and hugs made each one feel special. We were so fortunate to have had her so long. We will miss her dearly, but know she deserves to be at rest. Through all the good and the bad times, we knew Christy, Gord and family would be there for Grandma.

We are forever grateful for all they have done. Special thanks to the staff at Moose Mountain Lodge for their excellent care. Carlyle will always be special to us.

Carlyle

Failure to comply A citizen dropped an intoxicated individual off at the Carlyle RCMP detachment, due to concerns the intoxicated person was failing to comply with the conditions of their probation. This person was lodged in cells until sober.

An individual from the Antler area is charged with failure to comply with an undertaking.

Fire Carlyle RCMP were called to a structure fire in Kisbey. Carlyle Fire & Rescue responded.

Fraud An individual reported a possible attempted telephone fraud to the RCMP. In addition, members were alerted to another possible incidence of fraud by mail.

Harassment RCMP are investigating an incidence of harrassment involving text messages in the Carlyle area.

Mental Health Act The Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to a request from the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon) Veterinary Clinic, regarding the health of some animals in the detachment area. Members investigated and found the animals to be fine.

Members dealt with several more files under the Mental Health Act this week.

Mischief Members are investigating an allegation of mischief in Kisbey, in which a vehicle’s tires were slashed and sugar was poured in the gas tank.

Road safety “We have received reports about motorists speeding through the school zone near Carlyle Elementary School, as well as reports that people are parking where they are not supposed to park. Both of these actions make the area around the school unsafe for children. Please obey the speed limit and be aware where you are parking, so that everybody can get to school safely.”

“And with spring, comes bike season,” adds Simons. “Anything that has wheels is considered a vehicle under the Traffic Safety Act and must follow the rules of the road – which includes obeying all traffic signs and driving or riding on the correct side

of the road.”

“Please talk to your children about road safety and bike safety and lead by example.”

Theft An incidence of theft under $5,000 from a business in Carlyle is currently under investigation by RCMP. Traffic offences Staff Sgt. Darren Simons says that members of the Carlyle RCMP detachment have recently witnessed erratic driving by motorists when police cruisers are nearby, with lights flashing. “I urge drivers to comply with the rules of the road and to use good driving practices such – as complying with posted speed limits and shoulder-checking – so that our roads will remain safe for everyone.”

Carlyle RCMP received a report of erratic driving. Although police did not locate the driver, the registered owner of the vehicle was advised by letter of the police and public’s concerns.

Two individuals will appear in court for driving while disqualified or suspended.

A motorist was fined $280 for operating a cell phone while driving.

An individual was fined $150 for driving without a license.

Six motorists were charged for not insuring their vehicles. The fine for this offence is $580.

Members issued fines for speeding, failing to stop at a posted interesction, failure to wear a seatbelt as well various fines for non-moving traffic violations, such as tint.

RCMP responded to the report of a vehicle making unnecessary noise.

Members dealt with vehicles regarding the transport of insecure loads.

RCMP delivered a warning to the driver of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) regarding the Off-Road Vehicle Act. Uttering threats A threat regarding injury to an animal resulted in charges against a person in the Carlyle area. ` A report of uttering threats which originated from the Kisbey area is currently under investigation by Carlyle RCMP. An incidence of uttering threats in the Carlyle area is under investigation.
