This year, the Carlyle & District Food Bank provided a helping hand to clients from throughout this corner of Saskatchewan - an area of 3,200 square kilometres. This Christmas, the food bank sent out 117 hampers.

“We serve a large area,” says food bank Chairperson Theresa Leudtke. “ We provide hampers once a month to families and individuals needing some assistance in the Carlyle, Arcola, Manor, Redvers, Stoughton, Kisbey, Whitebear and Wawota areas.

And whether we receive contributions of cash, food or volunteer labour, it all helps us to give a helping hand to our clients.”

“This year, from January 1st until the end of October, we distributed 466 hampers,” says Luedtke.

“And in November, we sent out 63 hampers. For Christmas, 117 hampers went out.”

“Throughout the year, we average at least 50 hampers a month,” she says. “Those hampers support over 200 people and more than half of those people are under the age of 18.”

The contents of a regular - not Christmas - hamper is valued at about $75 and is estimated to last 10 days.

“We strive to keep nutrition a top priority,” says Luedtke. “Ususally, we provide eggs, bread, milk, apples, potatoes, onions, quick oatmeal, peanut butter, margarine and meat - such as hamburger. We also include dry and canned goods.”

Leudtke and her fellow volunteers at the Carlyle & District Food Bank say that they are grateful for the support the food bank has received throughout 2017.

“Once a month, we invite organizations and groups to help fill hampers before they’re picked up the following morning,” she says. “Local service groups, churches and schools have organized food drives and the food bank greatly appreciates the donations and support.”

And even though the 2017 Christmas hampers have been delivered, Leudtke says: “The need is ongoing and I’d like to add that it’s not too late to volunteer to pack hampers in 2018 or to donate to the Carlyle & District Food Bank. Cash donations are tax-deductible and are used to buy perishable items, such as eggs, milk and fresh produce. And this year, until December 31, Sask. Potash Corp. will match cash donations made to food banks throuout the province.”

“However, most of all, I’d like to thank everyone from our communities who supported the Food Bank this year,” she says.

“And on behalf of all of us here at the Carlyle & District Food Bank, I’d like to wish everyone a blessed holiday season and a prosperous New Year.”

“The scavenger hunt was a big hit – we had photos of 12 different locations in town and wonderful home owners who let us take photos of their decorations – so, kids and even some adults, went around and had to take a selfie with the decorations as they found them. When they returned the sheet they received a prize bag. It was a particular hit with the older kids, and we had over 50 out to participate in that.”

“Local businesses decided to participate in ‘Chase the Flake,’ which was similar to the scavenger hunt and a prize was given out with items from the participating businesses.”

Two youngsters enjoy the parade in Redvers after a big day of fun at Winterfest.

Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus were joined by “Ride with Santa winners”, Zailey and Kinsley, on a float during the parade. The event overall was a great success with community members and businesses ensuring a fun and busy Winterfest. from Redvers and the surrounding area are! I think people were really pleased with the lineup,” Birch stated. She added, “Skating was popular as well, but we don’t have the numbers in just yet.”

A very well attended Santa Parade made its way through town – Main Street was lined up. Many young kids were there excited to see all of the lights, but to also gather any candy the parade floats decided to toss to the crowd.

The parade had approximately 25 floats entered and each one was of high quality – many people marvelled at the Town of Redvers’ giant snowman.

As the day came to an end Twinkle Tours were set up with a 10-person bus taking people on a tour of the town. Here they could vote for the best Christmas Lights and enjoy an evening of Christmas spirit. Winners will be announced on the 21st.

The day ended with a Senior Men’s Hockey game where the Redvers Rockets took on the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings – free admission for all kids and students. It was an exciting match-up, which didn’t see either side score in the first period. Action ramped up in the second with a goal by

Craig Gaudet assisted by Braeden Magotiaux and a goal by Dakota Rose assisted by Craig Gaudet and Brady Gaudet.

The Rockets blasted off in the third earning another three goals: Kevin Mann off Drew Hoff and Ryan Yates, Jordon Miller from Drew Hoff and Francis Lamotte, and Sean Jonassen from Braeden Magotiaux and Dakota Rose. The Rockets won 5-2.

“Overall we were really happy with how the day went and we’re looking forward to next year,” Birch stated. “It’s amazing what kind of event you can put on when the community and organizations come together like this. The small event we originally thought we were planning just kept evolving; we are very thankful for all of the help in planning and organizing the event.”

Forget’s Gilbertsons new proprietors of The Happy Nun Lynne Bell

Forget residents Leon and Gayla Gilbertson are more aware than most of the heartfelt hold The Happy Nun Cafe has on the people in their community and beyond. As the Nun’s new owners, the couple aim to both uphold and build on the Forget institution’s reputation as what Gayla calls a place that offers “good food, good music and good times.”

“I worked front of house for Katie and Riley,” says the former insurance broker. “And Leon bartended occasionally. We know what Shannon and Don (Shakotko) built and we know what Katie (VingeRiddell) and Riley (Riddell) contributed to The Happy Nun, so it’s a special place, for sure.”

“And on a personal note, Leon and I had our first date there, when Shannon and Don first owned it,” says Gayla.

“And shortly after Katie took it over, I started working for her there, and I think I only missed three weekends, so we’re now both personally and professionally invested in The Happy Nun.” Along with many others, the Gilbertsons mourned the death of founder Don Shakotko shortly after he sold The Happy Nun Cafe and later, the untimely passing of owner and chef, Katie Vinge-Riddell.

“The Happy Nun is definitely more than a restaurant or a building,” says Gayla. “The food, the music and the community that can be found within the Nun creates a magical balance. It’s a place where the whole outside world

just falls away and people just relax and more often than not, meet new friends.”

“I’ve seen it there, myself,” she adds. “Not only have I seen diners form lasting friendships there, I’ve also seen people choose The Happy Nun as a place for engagements, birthdays, weddings anniversaries and celebrations that are meaningful to them.”

“So really, it had to be open,” says Gayla.

“We discussed taking over The Nun with Riley after some time had passed. We all discussed it together and I think Riley wanted to make sure The Happy Nun had a good home. And so did we. It means a lot to us that Riley wanted us and that he was so supportive.”

“It was a hard but easy decision. I have a full-time career as an insurance broker that I’ll be ending soon,” she says. “And we have five children between the two of us. But really, we feel this is where we need to be.”

Between the two of them, Gayla and Leon have roots in the Forget community and in the restaurant industry.

“Leon grew up in Forget and his mom, Sharon cooked at The Blue Spruce restaurant for years and she also did a lot of catering,” says Gayla, a Manitoba native. “And the restaurant industry has always been part of what I’ve done, even if it hasn’t always been full-time.”

“One of the things Katie and I bonded over was our mutual love of and passion for food,” she says. “And one of the things we talked about was the food we’d grown up with. One of my

grandmothers had Norwegian and Ukrainian roots and feeding people is what you did, according to her. Whether people were happy or celebrating or mourning - you fed them.”

“My other grandmother was all about farm food - and you cooked with any ingredients you grew or raised yourself.”

“Once when we talked, Katie burned everything - which is something she would never do - simply because we were talking about food and were so engrossed in our conversation.”

The Gilbertsons are committed to featuring Saskatchewan talent and products at The Happy Nun whenever possible.

“This currently includes food and drink from the Stoughton Meat Market, Last Mountain Distillery, Calibre Coffee and Bandit Distillery, to name just a few,” says Gayla. “And our list of Saskatchewan suppliers will grow as we continue to source.”

“And a lot of the artists we’ve booked into the new year are from the southeast corner of the province.”

Gilbertson says The Happy Nun’s menu will consist of “lots of my favourites - many of which I’ve made for my family. We’ll have supper seatings on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

We’ll be open for Sunday brunch and we’ll serve light lunches on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.”

“We’ll change the menu on a monthly basis,” says Gayla. “Because we want people to make The Happy Nun their date night destination. We’ll also offer live music once a month as

The last day of classes before the Christmas Break is Friday, December 22, 2017. The first day of classes in the New Year is Monday, January 8, 2018.

Band students of GFK are selling their usual fruit, cookie dough, desserts and others for their annual fundraiser. Feel free to support the band program of GFK and purchase some amazing yummies....;) The Mosaic Meal (Potluck) will again be held on the last day before the break, Friday, December 22nd. Each student is asked to bring enough food for 5 - 6 people according to the grade’s category.

The food is to be brought on the Wednesday, between 11:30 AM and 11:55 AM. Warming up the food at school is not possible, so please bring it ready to serve. The meal starts at noon. The categories are: Grade 7, Chinese food; Grade 8, Mexican food; Grade 9, Italian food; Grade 10, Ukrainian food; Grade 11, appetizers; Grade 12, desserts; Grade 7-12 Filipino students, Filipino food. Please remember to avoid nuts in your meal preparations.

Food Bank donations have also started to come in. The class which brings in the most food items, eats first at the Mosaic Meal. Last year, G.F. Kells High School donated over 5500 items to the Food

Bank through this campaign. This year’s goal is 6000 items. The most needed food items include: peanut butter, canned meats, canned fish, all kinds of beans, powdered or canned milk, and canned vegetables and fruits.

Fitness Club is Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, every week from 7:45 – 8:30AM. All fitness levels are welcome. Come out and get your day started with some fitness.

Weekly RCMP report Lynne Bell

The Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to several calls between Thursday, Dec. 7 and Thursday, Dec. 14.

911/False alarms A call to 911 originated from a payphone in Redvers.

A misdialled call to 911 originated in Carlyle.

Alcohol-related offences Police responded to the report of an intoxicated male on a road in the Carlyle area.

Assault RCMP responded to a report of an alleged assault in the Carlyle area involving two siblings.

No charges were laid.

Assistance RCMP responded to a call from Arcola which reported a vehicle that was running overnight.

The caller was concerned that an individual was in the vehicle, but upon investigation, police found no one in the vehicle.

Members of the Carlyle RCMP detachment assisted the Regina Police Service with a warrant.

Police responded to a report of several vehicles that were allegedly vandalized in Arcola. Upon investigation, RCMP members found that this was not the case.

RCMP responded to a report of a possible domestic disturbance within the detachment area, but upon investigation, police found that the alleged incident did not occur.

Breach of conditions An individual was found by RCMP to be in breach of the conditions of their conditional sentence order. This person also faces additional

charges.

Break and enter Several businesses in Carlyle were broken into during what is believed to be the early hours of Tuesday, Dec. 12. Carlyle RCMP is currently investigating with the RCMP’s Forensic Identification Unit from Yorkton assisting. Businesses in Redvers were also broken into and RCMP are trying to determine whether these crimes are linked to other break and enters within the detachment area.

“These crimes are not the fault of any business owner or homeowner,” says Staff Sgt. Darren Simons. “But I would suggest that businesses and individuals do as much as they can to make things as difficult as possible in order to frustrate would-be thieves.”

“Please make sure you cash out everyday and leave the empty cash register open,” he says.

“Look into installing a security system with alarms as well as a video system.”

“A proper locking system for your doors is essential and anything that needs to remain inside the premises should be secured in something that can’t be carried away.”

“With this being the Christmas season, people travel and shop,” adds Simons. “If thieves can see it in a vehicle, chances are they’ll consider breaking a vehicle window to steal an item. So consider hiding things as well as locking vehicles and garages and making sure keys aren’t easily accessible.”

“It’s a simple thing, but an important thing.”

Fraud RCMP responded to a report of a possible fraud in Redvers. Police deemed this to be a civil matter.

RCMP dealt with one Mental Health Act file this week.

Theft Members are investigating the theft of an SUV in Manor.

RCMP are currently investigating the theft of fuel from a vehicle in Manor.

Two wallets were stolen from an inlocked vehicle in an unlocked garage in Carlyle.

Traffic offences/Collisions This week, Constables Al Garceau and Clarence Wagner joined Officer Greg Coleman from Saskatchewan’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit for one day on Hwy 604 and Hwy 13 near Arcola. Five out of eight semi-trailers were taken out of service due to safety concerns.

Three semi-trucks were found to have tires in need of repair and which rendered them a serious safety hazard and two were found to have no permits for loads which exceeded legal limits involving both height and width restrictions.

In addition to infractions involving log books and bills of ladings, serious safety concerns emerged, including: speeding, passing emergency vehicles with speeds in excess of 60 km per hour, travelling with insecure loads, inadaquate headlamps on vehicles, brake lights which failed to light up when brakes were applied, speeding, excessive windshield damage, licence violations and

cell phone use.

Other traffic offences this week included: A minor collision between a school bus and a vehicle occurred in the Carlyle area. There were no injuries.

Members issued several speeding tickets this week, with fines reaching $376.

One motorist was issued a ticket for driving a motor vehicle while suspended from doing so, while another driver was fined for failing to produce a valid drivers licence.

An individual was fined $580 for driving an uninsured vehicle.

The RCMP dealt with three intersectionrelated violations this week. The fine for this offence is $230.

A motorist was fined $150 for driving left of centre.

A driver received a warning from police for following another vehicle too closely.

Three motorists were fined $175 each for failing to wear seatbelts.

The importance of the newspaper

Recently there have been a number of newspaper closures; it both surprises me and makes me a little sad. I might just be a Millennial, so I’m supposed to enjoy my technology, but there’s something wonderful about grabbing a newspaper to read: the newsprint dying your fingers slightly and being able to physKelly Running ically turn the page.

Observer Staff News these days has become focused on either National or Provincial stories, which is great, but you can get that news almost anywhere… the pleasure of reading a local newspaper is in just that, reading local news. Here at The Observer, I know we don’t get to absolutely everything out there, but if someone has called us about an event or about submitting photos and stories we do our best to have a reporter make it out and run the submitted articles.

It’s the fun part of a local newspaper, seeing the local accomplishments of people we know, “Oh, that’s so and so’s granddaughter who won that!” It’s something that communities can be proud of and it acts as an archive for future generations.

In the nearly six years that I’ve been here we’ve had requests for old papers, people looking for obituaries or a story from years ago that they remember.

One of the most unique requests, which I absolutely loved, was someone asking for a copy of the front page from the day her husband was born. He was celebrating his 50th birthday I believe and it was a small keepsake from his hometown as they no longer live here – the big local news stories from the day he was born.

My affinity for newspapers likely lives in my love of history – I literally get to write Primary Sources of events for future people to look back on. If they want to know how people lived, what they did, how they celebrated, and life in general in Southeast Saskatchewan – you’d look to a local newspaper.

Sure, things might make the nightly news somewhere or end up online with a larger media outlet; but, local newspapers run local stories all of the time. You think of the kind of stories the larger outlets run as well and they’re few and far between of specifically local news or events, unless they’re particularly hard hitting. You won’t find the photos of your kid’s Christmas concert there, but if you see a local reporter around there’s a chance you’ll be cutting out a photo or article to put up on the fridge or into a keepsake book. (I have a bunch of articles that my parents saved of my accomplishments: volleyball tournament wins, my valedictorian speech, athlete of the month, 4-H achievements, etc…)

Local news is meaningful to local people, so when I’m asked if the newspaper is a dying industry I tell them it’s not – and no it’s not because I work in the industry – it’s because I see the need for local newspapers and the importance of them.

Some tinsel and wings and a whole lot to say Some tinsel and wings, and a whole lot to say I apologize in advance for what is about to happen. In just moments there is going to be a collective groan and eye rolling amongst my family and close friends as they read what I am about to share.

I never got to be Mary in My Outlook the Sunday School Christmas Shelley Luedtke pageant.

Those who are with me this time of year have had to endure the story too many times (cue the eye rolling). If you’ve been at a Christmas event where I was the speaker you have heard me talk about it. It left its mark.

Year after year I couldn’t wait for the day when we would begin working on the Christmas program because it was an absolute favorite part of Christmas. I can recall in vivid detail every part I had in every single concert. I really can. And…I remember the part I never got to play.

One year stung a bit more than others. I was in grade 8 and certain that our class was going to be asked to play the principle roles in the Nativity since the older classes had done so the year before.

Each Sunday in November I watched for tell-tale signs of papers to be handed out assigning our parts. Finally, the morning arrived. The morning I was sure it was going to be my turn. The teacher approached us, smiled, and said it was time to begin preparing for the Christmas concert and that our class had the honour of…drumroll, please…playing the choir of angels. Choir of angels! Again? Are you kidding me?

The class four years younger was given the prime roles, and a friend of my sister was going to play Mary. What made that year noteworthy was that a family in our church with a new baby had agreed to

have their infant son be placed in the manger at the appropriate moment. Mary would get to gaze upon a real baby--not the doll that had played Jesus for years. As I stood with the other angels I felt a bit smug when the baby started fussing and his mom (who was standing just out of view of the scene) stepped into our pageant during the singing of one of the carols. There, I thought. So much for Mary’s time in the spotlight. The baby was heading to the cry room. But then the mother lifted her baby out of the manger and placed him in Mary’s arms. The smile on her face was huge, as was the collective ‘aah’ that moved across the congregation in witnessing such a tender moment. And it wasn’t my moment. Not that year, or any other year.

I’m not even sure what it was that made the role so appealing. Certainly the girl who played Mary usually got a pretty costume to wear, but when you get right down to it little can compete with the tinsel halo and large wings the angels were given. Perhaps it was the sense of being at the centre of the story--where we would get noticed--in the important scenes, as opposed to just…another…angel.

But wow, what a message we had as those angels! We spoke and we sang of the birth of a King, a Savior who came to bring hope and peace. The angels shared the news the world needed to hear then, and the news we need to hear now. Love.

Peace. Joy. We could sure use a whole lot of that today. And it’s there. It’s there for all of us. The message of the angels is as glorious today as it was when their song filled the night sky. That’s the miracle of Christmas. In a confused, bewildering and tumultuous world, we need to hear that announcement more than ever: “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.”

I never got to be Mary, but the words of the angel were on my tongue year after year. What a privilege that was, and continues to be.

That’s my outlook.

HEALTH HUB Arcola Family Health Clinic fundraising for panic button The Arcola Family Health Clinic is mounting a fundraising campaign and collecting donations to have a “panic” button installed at the nurses’ station in the Arcola Health Center. The Town of Arcola will issue tax-deductible receipts for donations of $21 and over.

There is increased violent behavior and a growing use of recreational drugs in

Saskatchewan and our communities. The state of patients that may attend the ER in our town has changed and there is a greater chance of a hostile situation arising. There is very little chance should such a situation occur, that the nurse(s) would have time to make a phone call to contact the RCMP for assistance.

The cost to have this equipment installed is ap-

Close games for the PureChem Cougars Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle PureChem Cougars took on the Redvers Rockets, Wednesday, Dec. 13. The away game was a close one for the Cougars, but they were unable to upset the Rockets who hold second place in league standings (information up-to-date as of Dec. 18).

The Rockets came out strong with a 3-1 lead after the first with Brett Turgeon scoring the lone goal for the Cougars assisted by Mark Shaw and Kelly Currie.

Heading into the second the Cougars attempted to claw back scoring two more: Brent McLean from Jordan Fox and Branden Lequyer followed by Ben Johnstone assisted by Brett Turgeon and Mark Shaw. However, the Rockets weren’t about to roll over gaining three goals in the second, leaving the score 6-3.

The Cougars rallied together in the final period with Cooper Fox scoring off an assist by Mark Shaw and Ben Johnstone, which was followed by a goal from Joel Mack from Jordan

Fox and Brayden Starr.

Bringing the score to 6-5, the Cougars pushed on but in the last five seconds of play, the Rockets’ Kevin Mann assisted by Drew Hoff and Jordan Miller clenched the win, ending in a 7-5 victory for the Rockets.

The PureChem Cougars then took on the Midale Mustangs on Saturday, Dec. 16, where they battled hard, looking for a win. Coming out strong the PureChem Cougars scored three goals in the first period: Mark Shaw assisted by Ben Johnstone and Blair Toms, Cooper Fox assisted by Brett Turgeon and Terrance Ross, and Cooper Fox off the sticks of Mark Shaw and Brett Turgeon. This left the Cougars up 3-0 after the first.

In the second the Mustangs came to play as they rang the bell four times, while keeping the PureChem Cougars scoreless in the second.

Atom Cougars hockey update Tammie Riddell Sports Contributor On December. 9, the Cougars hosted the Redvers Rockets. This was the first time playing this team and the game did not disappoint. Carlyle attacked early, mid point and with 17 seconds left in the first, to end the period with a 3-1 lead. Redvers came out with fire in their veins in the 2nd and scored 3 goals to our 1, to end the period in a 4-4 draw. The Cougars drew first blood in the 3rd with a goal at 16:06, but the Rockets answered back quickly at 14:44.

Redvers took the lead with only 8 minutes remaining. With time running out, the Cougars scored at 4:35. The buzzer rang, ending the roller coaster of emotions in a tie. This game was fast paced with some great shots and fantastic saves at both ends of the ice!

On December 10, the team travelled down highway 18 to Carievale. If you’ve never been to this rink, you should make the effort to go. They have great food, really comfy seats in the lobby & usually many of the locals are there to support the Storm. Now, on with the game…the Cougars came to play and scored 1st at 22:41, but the Storm answered back quickly at 21:50. There was 1 more goal by The Storm and 4 more by the Cougars, to end the period 5-2. The 2nd period was relatively quiet with lots of plays in the natural zone. The Cougars managed to score 2 goals, heading to the dressing room with a 7-2 lead.

The 3rd period saw lots of action! Carlyle scored 5 goals while Carievale scored 3. The fans hands and throats were numb and sore from cheering so much.

It was a hard-fought battle by both teams, but the Cougars came out victorious with a 12-5 win.

December 16, the Cougars were in their own barn Vs. the Bienfait Coal Miners. This was the first game in a home and away series. This group of kids are an amazing bunch of players. There were some spectacular plays, some spiral turning passes

on stick, dangling from end to end and some great saves by our goalie between the pipes! The Cougars 1st period was fabulous! The fury fellows scored 4 goals and defended well in their end, not allowing a single goal. The 2nd period was very similar to the first, with the Cougars scoring 2 goals and the Miners being shut down. The 3rd period saw more net time for the Miners, they managed to score a pair on the Cougars 1. The final score was 7-2 for the hometown heroes. Now all these games can not happen without the people in the stripes on the ice. We had a very fair and well refed game by the three individuals on the ice. A huge Thank you goes out to all the local refs for helping keep hockey alive in Carlyle!

December 17, we were again heading down highway 18, but in the opposite direction from last weekend to finish up the away portion of this series against Bienfait. The boys (I can say that, our one and only girl was not in attendance today) were revved up and rippen around the ice! The Cougars had a strong 1st period with 6 goals and 1 penalty, to the Coalers 1 goal. They continued their attack in the 2nd with 4 more goals and only allowed Bienfait to score once. The boys went to the dressing room with a considerable lead of 10-2. The 3rd period saw some changes. There was a shuffle in the players positions with many forwards now playing “D” and many “D’s” now playing forward. Wow, the confusion in the stands for the first couple shifts as the parents were trying to figure out where everyone was. District Public Speaking and Regional Public Speaking will be hosted by Glen Ewen Mixed and it was discussed.

Maryfield Sunrise Villa News Submitted by Janet Marks Charlotte Kovach and the members of the St. Andrews United Church who hosted the traditional Christmas party at the Villa. The Kindergarten to Grade 5 school children came to sing, with their teachers, Jody Boutin and Sherry Retzlaff. This year they were accompanied by Freda Thiessen on guitar. Such good singing, and such action! Each of us residents had a small gift and card from Santa.

The same children sang at the Spirit of Christmas Concert on Sunday night. Freda brought her guitar students. The Vesey girls played piano, and Betsy’s Bountiful Beauties sang several lovely carols. Fred and Marianne Krukoff and Janet Marks attended. Cheryl Friesen and daughters Kim and Darlene sang lovely harmony. We are always glad when groups come to the Villa to practice, as so few of us go out to entertainment. Avid curlers watch for our own Val Sweeting.

Mary Thiessen brought her guitar last Saturday and we sang more than a dozen carols. She also brought the Retzlaff great grandchildren. It felt so good to hold a baby again. Grandmas took turns.

Ferne Mills birthday brought her grandchildren, Cole, Luke, and Blake Jensen and their parents Clayton and Raeleen Schultz. The two older ones played for Grandma, for the first time in public; Brooklyn on violin, and Carter on guitar.

Visitors during the week included; Leanne Jackson with Alice Chaput, Jean, Bonnie and Laurie Bogner with Ruth Dennis; Jean Vreys and Amelia Fewings, Barb and Thor Johnson, and Adrienne Vreys. Evelyn Downer visited many friends. Jonathan, Nikki Toews and Liam visited Grandma Jessie Thiessen. Wendy Turton and Jocelyn Haimsworth visited their great Aunt Janet Mark. Sherry Wilson, Rachel and Allysa visited with Ruth Holstrom.

Sandra Dick’s Youth Group have extended from her own family into two others; Andreese and Tanja Berg; Freddy Berg, Robin and Nathanael. Among them they played violin and flutes, trumpet, and mandolin, with Sandra on piano, and her brother Vladimar on accordion. They led us in singing some of our favourite carols. The men gave the Christmas message. They had tiny favors for the residents.

Did you get to watch the curling event over the last week – The Roar of the Rings – featuring the best curlers of each Canadian province? I was glued to the TV three times a day, if at all possible – I was in/on seventh heaven.

There was sure some excellent curling and nail biting as the games were played.

The winners of both the women and men are the

curlers who will represent Canada during the Olympic Winter Games to be held in March. The Rachelle Homan team and Kevin Koe team will represent Canada – Go Canada Go, bring home the gold medals.

Act One Productions held their second meeting on Dec. 12 at the Alida Hall with the usual very few members in attendance. Nevertheless the eager mem-

bers have committed themselves to another year of drama.

Dec. 17 was the evening of our annual Old Fashion Christmas Concert with our local young people and adults putting you into the Christmas spirit as they performed their renditions of some good old/ new Christmas songs and music.

Clinton Brisbois of Winnipeg spent a few days last week visiting with his parents, Joe and Jean Brisbois.

Visiting with Bob and Linda Birnie and Gordon and Sandra Murray was Diana Purdie of Regina.

Sympathy to the family and friends of the late Cheryl Winkler. She passed away on Dec. 6 at the age of 56 years. She was the daughter of Larry and Claire Rogers, wife of Duane Winkler and mother to Maegan Terry, Jesse and Tristen and grandmother to 8. Cheryl will be remember, especially for her fondness of animals.

She spent the last 14 years rehabilitating injured and sick wildlife.

What a wonderful legacy she has left.

Last Monday the Wawota Lions held their49th Senior’s Christmas Supper. Over 130 guests enjoyed the evening, from the decorated tables, the spiffy waiters, and the great meal. The entertainment provided by the L Tones was great. Some really enjoyed the free flowing wine. Each year the Lions raffle wine baskets and the winners were Wes Dennis and Mildred Wilson.

and Irene Dorrance.

I have attended 12 of these events and this was the best ever.

I have been enjoying singing Christmas Carols at church lately.

It brought back many memories of the 50’s when the school put on their annual Christmas Concert. All the grades from 1-8 were involved and I remember the many hours that we copied out the words for the many songs.

Perhaps that is partly why I know the words to so many carols. Good times.

I guess I’ll close and wish everyone a joyous and blessed holiday season.

An accident is defined as “an unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury.” It’s not an accident when someone chooses to drive while under the influence it’s completely preventable. As a local responder to a collision, we can’t leave work at work; we watch the community, family, and friends grieve.

At the end of the day someone would rather you phone them for a ride than to find out something happened.

Why does Saskatchewan have such a high rate of people who drink and drive? I think it’s a classic feeling of invincibility – the mentality that “oh, it won’t happen to me” – but we respond to collisions of all ages and genders; people making bad decisions.

At the end of the day I love my job, I love people; but, we’re the last people someone wants to see in their everyday life and we don’t want to be seeing people we know either. Drinking and driving affects everybody: first on scene, first responders, friends, family, and the community.

The choice to drink and drive doesn’t just affect one person.

My family was personally affected in 2004 and the senseless acts of driving while under the influence are frustrating both personally and professionally. And it’s not just during the holiday season; but all of the time.

Karen passed away peacefully at her residence on Friday, November 10, 2017 at the age of 53.

She was predeceased by her cousins, Betty Ann, Dale, Dwain and Jim; brother-in-law Jerry; grandparents Bill and Annie and Don and Kay; uncle Lawrence and aunt Lenora; uncle Claude and aunt Joanne; uncle Bud and aunt Dorthy; aunt Evelyn.

Karen is survived by her loving husband Allen; daughter Andrea; son Jason; granddaughter Rylee; parents Ralph and Mary Wang; sister Cindy and family; brother Greg (Janice) and family; in-laws Dwaine and Shirley Johnson; sister-in-law Susan (Stan) and family; sister-in-law Kim (Kurt) and family; aunt Lillian; Rose and family; Sharon and family; numerous cousins, great nieces and nephews, friends, and friends that have become like family.

Dorothy Mae Tonnellier late of Carlyle, Saskatchewan passed away December 10, 2017 at the age of 90 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Maud Jackson; �ive half-sisters and three half-brothers; one brother; granddaughter, Theresa and great granddaughter, Hannah. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Dick (Val) and Phil (Maretes) Maurice; granddaughters, Evelyn and Kassandra, grandsons, Ryan, Trent, Bryce, Chris, Jerek, Tristan and Clayton; six great granddaughters and four great grandsons. A graveside service will take place at a later date. In lieu of �lowers donations in memory of Dorothy can be made to Canadian National Institute for the Blind at 1929 Bayview Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, M4G 3E8.

The colours of Christmas Christmas is a very festive time of year for many. When someone thinks about Christmastime they think of the colours green, red, and gold. White is another rather common colour to be seen around this time, but did you know blue is also considered a Christmas colour?

Green: Evergreen plants like holly, mistletoe, and evergreen trees have been used to decorate during the holidays for many years as those greens were an easy way to brighten up buildings. Romans exchanged branches of evergreen trees throughout the winter for luck and Egyptians would use palm branches for winter festivals.

Red: The colour of holly berries and bish-

ops robes – like those worn by St. Nicholas, Santa Claus.

Gold: Representing light, it is the star that guided the three wise men to baby Jesus. It is also considered a warm colour in the cold, dark winter months.

White: Purity and

peace are both depicted by the colour white in western cultures. Also, Christmastime is often associated with snow, which is white.

Blue: Not the most well-known Christmas colour, but an important one. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is often de-

picted wearing blue. She is seen wearing blue to show her importance as in medieval times blue dye and paint was extremely expensive and only worn by royals and the very rich. Blue is also the colour representative of the sky and of heaven.

What I don’t deserve for Christmas

By Linda Wegner This afternoon, after thinking about the beautiful Christmas carols that have become such an integral part of my life, I began humming a crazy, totally unrelated but seasonal song. “I’m getting nothing for Christmas, Mommy and Daddy are mad; I’m getting nothing for Christmas ‘cause I ain’t been nothing but bad.”

Definitely not what I had in mind when I think of this very special time of year but having said that, the invasive melody and those negative lyrics made me realize there’s more truth in those words than I’d first thought. While I’m definitely not admitting to horrible behaviour and I really hope I do get something nice for Christmas, the ditty got my thought pattern changed from the usual to realizing the story of Christmas is the embodiment of things given and received, none of which I deserve.

First, I did nothing to deserve or earn the gift of

freedom that we enjoy here in North America. Refugee families in our little community remind me daily how privileged we are to live here. It’s not perfect but far from the chaos endured by millions around the world.

Then, there is the gift of beauty: even as I write I turn my head to gaze at snow-covered mountains seemingly rising from the shores of the Pacific Ocean but even that view does nothing to diminish my memories of the beauty of prairie landscapes.

Daily I give thanks for the gifts of family, friends, neighbours, readers from around the world and closer to home, members of a wonderful community.

Above all, however, I’ve gained a fresh understanding that Christmas really is all about a gift, a gift available to each of us, folks who like, the subject of that song, have been anything but perfect.

“But thanks be to God for His unspeakable Gift….” Amen.

Poinsettias a symbol for Christmas In 1825 the American Ambassador, Roberts Poinsett, to Mexico was introduced to the flower “Taxco del Alarcon.” Poinsett became very interested in the plant and began growing them at his plantation in South Carolina, from there he sent the plant to friends and botanical gardens.

The ancient Aztecs used the flowers for making a dye for clothes and cosmetics, while they also used the white sap to make medicines.

It is a Christmas flower, however, because of its bright green and red leaves – which are Christmas colours. The leaves are also associated to the Star of Bethlehem.

Additionally there is an old Mexican tale of a young girl called Pepita. The girl did not have very much and was not able to give anything particularly beautiful to the baby Jesus at the Christmas Eve Service.

Her cousin, Pedro, tried to cheer her up saying that Jesus would love even the smallest of gifts.

Pepita still didn’t know what she could give to Jesus and began picking weeds from the roadside.

She made a small bouquet and presented them at the altar of the chapel where the Christmas Eve Service was being held. As she placed the bouquet at the bottom of the nativity scene the bouquet of weeds transformed into beautiful, bright red flowers.

Poinsettias became known as “Flores de Noche Buena” or “Flowers of the Holy Night.”

Lemon cranberry muffins Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Servings: 12 Ingredients • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar • 1/2 tsp. baking powder • 1/2 tsp. baking soda • 1/4 tsp. salt • 1/4 tsp. allspice • 1/8 tsp. ground cayenne pepper • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk • 1/4 cup butter, melted • 1 egg, yolk and white separated • Zest of 1 lemon • 1 cup fresh cranberries (washed) or frozen (thawed) Directions Heat oven to 205 °C (400 °F). Lightly

grease a 12-cup muffin pan that’s roughly 6 centimetres (2.5 inches) deep. In a large bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, allspice and cayenne pepper and mix until evenly blended.

In a small bowl, add buttermilk, butter, egg yolk and lemon zest, and beat until mixture is smooth. In a third bowl, whip up the egg white.

Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients. Pour in the buttermilk mixture and stir with a fork until all ingredients are mixed together. Add egg white and cranberries. Pour the mixture into the muffin pan, filling each cavity 3/4 full. Bake until a skewered tooth pick comes out clean, about 20 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Using a knife, unstick the sides of the muffins and remove from pan.

Revisit the delicious combination of lemon and cranberry with these delicious muffins — this time, with a spicy twist!

Holiday safety tips from CAA Saskatchewan Whether you are planning to be at home, away visiting family or taking a winter getaway during the holidays, it’s important to protect yourself and your home. Here are some holiday safety tips from CAA Saskatchewan.

Home for the holidays safety tips: Ensure artificial Christmas trees are “fire resistant” and that live trees are always fresh and moist.

Set up live and artificial trees away from fireplaces, heaters, and other heat sources.

Inspect holiday lights yearly for broken, frayed or loose connections and throw out damaged sets.

Turn off all holiday lights when going to bed or leaving the house. Outdoor electric lights and decorations should be plugged into ground fault circuit interrupters.

Keep decorations away from lights, candles, heaters, fireplaces, etc. Place candles in non-combustible containers and never leave burning candles unattended.

As you buy your gifts, it is a good idea to keep packaging of high priced items out of sight. Don’t give burglars a shopping list of what they might find in your home.

Keep matches and lighters out of sight and reach of children. Do not leave any cooking or baking unattended.

Have the chimney and furnace professionally cleaned and inspected. Ensure that smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working. Hide your valuables when you are out. Keep watch for any suspicious behaviour in your neighbourhood and report any questionable observations to the proper authorities.

Away from Home for the Holidays safety tips: Suspend newspaper delivery and arrange for someone to pick up your mail or contact your mail service to hold your mail until your return.

Show discretion on social media, never letting folks know your away from home whereabouts.

Ensure all doors and windows are locked.

Use timers to turn lights, and possibly the TV or radio, on/off during the day/night.

Turn off your water supply or have someone enter the home and check on things daily to ensure the pipes are not frozen. (This is a requirement of most insurance policies during the winter months).

Ask a neighbour to shovel snow around your driveway and sidewalks. Encourage neighbours to use your driveway so it looks like someone is coming and going on a regular basis.

Leave blinds or curtains in normal position – don’t close them completely.

Close and lock the garage door. Keep your vehicle locked, especially if it has an electric garage door opener.

Make sure your home insurance is up to date and that it will provide coverage for your belongings. Advise your insurance broker of any changes required for major purchases or renovations.

Jetting away for the holidays safety tips: Check your booked flights frequently. Flight cancellations and delays are likely during peak periods. Also check your flight status prior to driving to the airport.

Know your airline’s cancellation policy. Some airlines may be waiving fees and issuing changes due to possible rebooking policies.

Monitor weather conditions – both for the departure and destination cities.

Don’t forget your travel insurance.

Make sure your passport is up to date and is valid for time required by the country or countries visited.

Pack any medications in their original containers and store in your carry-on bags.

Make photocopies of your passport, credit cards, etc. and leave a copy at home with family or friends, and keep a photocopy with you along with the originals stored in a separate location.

Keep your passport secured in a safe place.

Weigh your packed luggage to avoid additional airline charges.

Holiday pet hazards to look out for Keep your fourlegged friend safe this holiday season by keeping hazardous products out of paw’s reach.

Many popular holiday foods are actually quite toxic for animals. Keep this list of dangerous ingredients handy while you cook for the humans around the table.

The Perfect Christmas Turkey • 1 (18 pound) whole turkey, neck and giblets removed • 2 cups kosher salt • 1/2 cup butter, melted • 2 large onions, peeled and chopped • 4 carrots, peeled and chopped • 4 stalks celery, chopped • 2 sprigs fresh thyme • 1 bay leaf • 1 cup dry white wine Directions 1. Rub the turkey inside and out with the kosher salt. Place the bird in a large stock pot, and cover with cold water. Place in the refrigerator, and allow the turkey to soak in the salt and water mixture 12 hours, or overnight.

2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Thoroughly rinse the turkey, and discard the brine mixture.

3. Brush the turkey with 1/2 the melted butter.

Place breast side down on a roasting rack in a shallow roasting pan. Stuff the turkey cavity with 1 onion, 1/2 the carrots, 1/2 the celery, 1 sprig of thyme, and the bay leaf. Scatter the remaining vegetables and thyme around the bottom of the roasting pan, and cover with the white wine.

4. Roast uncovered 3 1/2 to 4 hours in the preheated oven, until the internal temperature of the thigh reaches 180 degrees F (85 degrees C). Carefully turn the turkey breast side up about 2/3 through the roasting time, and brush with the remaining butter. Allow the bird to stand about 30 minutes before carving.

What do food banks really need?

Would you like to give something back this holiday season? Donating money or items to a food bank (or other similar organization) is an excellent way to raise spirits and help those in need. So what should you give? Here are a few nutritious non-perishable grocery store items to consider. Note that breakable containers, such as glass bottles and jars, should be avoided.

• Canned beans • Canned fish and seafood • Breakfast cereals (varieties with whole grains and low sugar content are best) • Pasta (ideally whole wheat) • Pasta sauce • Peanut butter • Canned soup • Crackers (choose these carefully, because some crackers are devoid of any nutritional value) • Boxed milk and enriched soy milk • Canned fruit and sauces (with no added sugar) People also need staples like oil, spices, broth and flour. Moreover, though healthy foods are important, there’s nothing wrong with including a sweet treat or two with your donation. Items that families in need can’t usually afford, such as almond butter or mixed nuts, are much appreciated during the holiday season. Think of what you would like to receive!

Other than food, you can also donate personal hygiene products (soap, toothpaste, tampons, tissues), household cleaning items and over-thecounter medications (cough syrup, antihistamines, vitamins). Don’t forget about the little ones, whose needs are often abundant and expensive. Young families in need will definitely appreciate diapers, formula and baby clothes.

What can be recycled Almost everything can be recycled! That being said, just because an item can be recycled doesn’t mean it necessarily belongs in the recycling bin. Consult your municipality to find out which items go in the bin and which should be brought to a disposal facility. The following materials and products can usually be recycled: • Regular wrapping paper • Cardboard • Tissue paper • Batteries • Glass containers (e.g. wine bottles and salsa jars) • Electronic devices (e.g. TVs, computers and printers) • Cans • Plastic (with a few exceptions) What can’t be recycled The following items should

be thrown out: • Foil wrapping or other metallized paper • Ribbons and bows • Plastic utensils • Garlands and Christmas ornaments • Disposable tableware • Cork stoppers and Styrofoam (although certain places do recycle these — find out where!)

Since these materials can’t be recycled, try to avoid using them altogether. Opt instead for regular wrapping paper and utensils made of metal. Likewise, try to reuse items as much as possible. Keep bows and ribbons for next year’s gifts and use old cork stoppers in your DIY projects. Finally, donate old toys, clothes and Christmas decorations instead of throwing them out, and reduce food waste by freezing leftovers and sharing them with your family and friends.

Pear and cranberry quinoa salad Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Servings: 4 to 6 Ingredients • 1 cup quinoa • 2 cups water • 1/2 tsp. salt • 1/4 olive oil • Juice of 1 lemon • 1 garlic clove, finely chopped • Salt and pepper, to taste • 2 pears, unpeeled, cored and thinly sliced • 2 cups spinach, washed • 1 cup fresh cranberries (washed), or frozen (thawed) • 1/2 cup nuts, your choice (pecans, walnuts, etc.)

Directions Rinse the quinoa under cold water and drain well. In a frying pan, bring water and salt to a boil.

Add the quinoa. Cover and cook over low heat for 13 to 15 minutes, until the quinoa has absorbed the water and is transparent. Let sit, covered, for 5 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl and let cool to room temperature.

In a small bowl, whip oil, lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper to make the dressing. In a large salad bowl, gently mix the quinoa, pear slices, spinach leaves, cranberries and nuts. Add dressing, stir well and serve.

Now NORAD, a joint defense force made up of Canada and the United States continues this tradition. From young children to media networks around the world, NORAD is trusted with tracking Santa as he travels with his reindeer around the world each Christmas Eve. The radar system established along the Canadian and American border is tipped off when Santa leaves the North Pole on his yearly mission of reaching every youth around the world. Through a series of satellites NORAD then tracks Santa around the world. Based on heat signatures, the satellites are able to pinpoint Santa’s position due to the unique heat signature Rudolph’s nose gives off.

Another feature NORAD uses each year is the SantaCam, which began in 1998. Placed in strategic positions around the world these high-tech cameras, used specifically for tracking

Santa on Christmas Eve, are turned on and even catch images of Jolly Ol’ St. Nick and his team of reindeers while on his mission.

NORAD’s Santa Tracker can be found at www.noradsanta.org, where continual updates are found throughout Dec. 24, as currently Santa is hard at work at the North Pole where Santa lives.
