Two members of the Carlyle Skating Club received provincial and national recognition from Skate Canada Saskatchewan at a Saturday, May 5 awards ceremony in Regina.

Coach Jenna Toms and her assistant, Tiana Delalleau received Skate Canada’s Volunteer Coach Award and the Section Program Assistant Award, respectively.

Delalleau knew the other was nominated. Toms nominated her 10-yearold assistant and Tiana’s mother, Anita Delalleau nominated Toms in her capacity as Carlyle Skating Club president.

“If I put on my president’s hat, I couldn’t have picked two more deserving people,” says Anita.

Toms was only one of 10 coaches to receive the award this season.

Skate Canada’s Volunteer Coach Award criteria states - in part - that in addition to having skating, teaching and coaching credentials, the recipient must be: “a professional coach who inspires others to embrace the joy of skating... who has demonstrated commitment to the sport of skating.”

As part of Tom’s nomination package, fellow CSC coach Dawn Brady writes: “(Toms) is approachable, encouraging and a positive role model to our Starskaters and their parents.”

Parent Britany Smoliak writes of Toms: “Jenna’s love and passion for skating, as well as children, radiates when she is on the ice...I can’t say enough good things about all she has done for my girls.”

Fellow parent Karen Fischer agrees, writing:

“Our club and each skater in it is truly blessed to have Jenna as one of our coaches. I feel she is very deserving of this award and I know she will continue to share her love, knowledge and passion for this sport.”

“Everyone had great things to say about Jenna when I was putting the nomination package together,” says Anita.

“But it really was down to this - Jenna is always there for our skaters and our club.”

Toms’ nomination of her assistant, Tiana is an example of her commitment to coaching and acting as a role model to younger skaters.

Toms summed up Tiana’s contribution to the CSC this way: “Our club is very fortunate to have Tiana Delalleau as one of our Program Assistants for our CanSkate program...Tiana’s knowledge and dependability makes her a valuable asset to our club.

She never hesitates to go the extra mile and is always smiling. Tiana has a very caring nature and is a natural leader. I am very appreciative of her hard work and dedication to our program.”

The Dance Zone Spring Showcase Submitted The Dance Zone celebrated another successful season with A Moment To Shine - Spring Showcase held this past Sunday in Arcola. With over 200 guests in attendance, the hall was full of smiles while dancers aged 2-18 performed different dances in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical and musical theater.

Stealing the show, the Tiny Tot Class boosted nine tiny ballerinas (three missing) as they danced their hearts out for their adoring audience.

For two hours, solos, duets, trios and groups captivated their audience while they showcased their love to dance. Several of these performers were able to travel to Regina & Yorkton to perform in competitions in April/May and brought home outstanding awards and trophies for their hard work. It was a great addition to have some senior level dancers guest perform.

Three local dancers from Arcola and Carlyle also dance with The Dance Zone in Weyburn and they all teamed up to put on a few amazing performances: Jenna McAuley, Emma Lees and Abigail Birch were among this team and their performances were exceptional. All three were highly spoken about as they were recognized for their contributions as assistant teachers this past season.

Abigail was also recognized as a Graduating dancer, who began dancing with The Dance Zone when she was only four-years-old and has achieved great success along the way.

The showcase finished with a wonderful tap solo entitled “My Mom,” performed by Becca Lees.

It was quite fitting considering it was Mother’s Day and brought a few tears as the dance season came to an end.

The parents & dancers of The Dance Zone called upon Miss Tammy and Miss Samantha and presented them with gifts and flowers as a thank you for their continued contribution & love to dance in Carlyle and area. Dance will resume after the summer with both Miss Samantha Manolescue and Tammy Bhimji returning to celebrate their 16th season in Carlyle & area.

The Dance Zone – Carlyle – hosted their Spring Showcase at Prairie Place Hall on Sunday, May 13 – Mother’s Day. Here the dancers along with their teachers smile to celebrate their season’s end.

The performances were energetic and engaging as the youth performed.

Christalee Froese’s ‘Journey to Joy’ Lynne Bell

Award-winning Saskatchewan journalist Christalee Froese has written - and lived - the roadmap to ‘A Journey to Joy’ and now, she’s ready to share it with readers.

The Montmartre-based writer says her recentlypublished memoir was six years in the making.

Saskatchewan author Christalee Froese’s ‘Journey to Joy’ has been called: “‘Eat, Pray Love’ for the rest of us.” The book is available locally at Kings Department Store in Carlyle and at Wawota’s Front Porch Interiors. A Kindle version is also available via Amazon.ca.

In ‘Journey to Joy,’ Froese chronicles her recovery from depression and anxiety. She also takes readers through the trials of the adoption process, which eventually leads her to a Chinese orphanage, where she finds “her purpose.”

The mother of a teenage son and now, a daughter from China, Froese’s anxiety and depression began in earnest after she experienced a miscarriage and found she couldn’t have any more biological children.

After deciding to adopt a child, she spent six years on a wait list, having her hopes repeatedly dashed.

After experiencing increasingly severe anxiety and depression, Froese experienced a mental breakdown and spent three weeks in a psychiatric ward in 2011.

There, she realized that one of her biggest challenges was a relentless inner critic.

Even after the successful adoption of her daughter, Journey from China, Froese found that anxiety, depression and negative self-talk remained.

“I decided I had to

get unstuck,” she says.

“So I made a decision to begin a rewrite of everything I’d ever known or believed in.”

“I read that it takes 21 days to form a new habit, so I woke up one day and decided that for 21 days, ‘I’m just going to try joy.’”

“I focused on all of my favourite things and each month, I focused on just one. I just did it as I went along and I continued for about two years.”

Froese’s favourites include: Peace, Food, Music, Travel, Creativity, and more. It’s been called “‘Eat, Pray, Love’ for the rest of us.”

“But your favourite things might be entirely different,” she says. “And that’s okay. What the book is really all about is finding joy wherever you are.”

“I found joy in simple and slow and in the sanctuary of my family and good friends,”

says Froese. “Not on the streets of New York City or sitting at a banquet, although those can be fun, too.”

“What I really learned is that joy doesn’t have to be manufactured and it’s already there,” she says.

“Joy isn’t a management issue; it’s an observation issue.”

“Even though I wrote this (book) in the shelter of my relaxing office, writing it was still a very frightening process for me. But this project helped me and I hope it helps other people.”

“For anyone dealing with mental health issue, you are not alone.”

Parents of students in grades 11 and 12 (next school year) are welcome to come out to school at 7:00PM to go over student options and select courses for next year. Science teachers and math teachers will be there to talk to parents about course content and what it takes to be successful in topics dealing with things like quantum physics, genetics, or calculus. Finally, we’ll talk about the connection between the courses taken and the ability to get into post-secondary programs. Once again, the meeting will be held May 23 at 7:00PM in the high school library.

Many parents and students attended Student Led Conferences last month. Remember, if parents/caregivers ever have questions or concerns about their children’s progress at school, they are encouraged to contact their children’s teachers.

An intoxicated male in the Carlyle area was lodged in cells and charged.

Members responded to a report of an impaired driver on a highway within the detachment area.

RCMP responded to the report of an impaired driver in the Arcola area, who was not located.

Arson/Fire Carlyle RCMP investigated a total of 10 fires within this period. Two fires were deemed incidences of arson by negligence within the detachment area. One incident was cleared by officer discretion and one is still under investigation by police.

Assault An incident of assault causing bodily harm in Carlyle resulted in a police investigation.

Assistance RCMP responded to the report of a young man who incurred an injury while riding a dirt bike.

Break and enter Property was stolen from an unsecured garage in Carlyle.

A bicycle was stolen from a garage in Carlyle.

A reported break and enter at a Carlyle area cabin was proven to be unfounded.

Bylaw Enforcement RCMP investigated a noise complaint in Carlyle under local bylaws.

Mental Health Act RCMP members dealt with three files under the Mental Health Act during this period.

Theft RCMP received a report of a stolen phone in Wawota.

Traffic/Collisions Members dealt with two drivers for insur-

ance offences. The fine for this offence is $580.

One driver was also fined $100 for a trailer licencing offence. Another was issued a warning for muffler exhaust.

A motorist was was found to be driving while disqualified and was charged. This was detected via the automatic licence reader system.

RCMP responded to a report of a semi-trailer which was being driven in an erratic manner.

Members dealt with a driver whose truck did not have a proper gravel door.

Three individuals were found to be driving with undue care and attention. This offence carries a $280 fine.

RCMP responded to a report of an motorist driving while using a cell phone. The fine for this offence is $280.

An individual was found to be operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s licence.

Members investigated a report of a disqualified driver.

Police dealt with four motorists for intersection-related offences, which can incur $230 fine. One of these drivers was also issued a warning for speeding.

RCMP members issued over a dozen speeding tickets this week, with the highest fine being $218.

A young man was fined $150 for stunting.

Members dealt with four motorists for seatbelt offences, one for a child who was not properly secured in a vehicle.

The fine for a seatbelt offence is $175.

RCMP responded to a report of an erratic driver, who was found to be an individual who was undergoing driver training.

A truck driver was fined $150 for not properly filling out a daily

log.

Two drivers were charged with failure to produce applicable inspection documents for tractor trailers. The fine for this offence is $160.

RCMP responded to the report of a possiblyimpaired driver. This individual was found to be sober. However, Staff Sgt. Simons says: “Please don’t hesitate to call us if you have a concern. If we work together, we can make our highways and roads safer for all of us.”

Two individuals were fined $100 each fo failing to produce a registration certificate.

A truck and trailer was blocking Main Street in Carlyle. The driver was warned by police and moved their vehicle.

Members issued several inspection tickets and/or warnings, including: inadequate headlights, tail lights and daytime running lights, obscured and/or damaged licence plates, exhaust and muffler issues, inadequate trailer lights, log book violations, improper signage and lighting on semitrailers and oversize loads.

Uttering threats Carlyle RCMP responded to three separate incidences of uttering threats. One individual involved was found to have eight outstanding warrants and is currently in custody. The other incident was dealt with without charges and the third remains unresolved.

Vandalism An unoccupied house in Manor was damaged. There are no suspects and no clues at this time.

Welfare check Members performed a welfare check in the Carlyle area. All was found to be well.

Calling all bacon lovers Kelly Running Observer Staff

Kipling, Saskatchewan is home to the Great Saskatchewan Bacon Festival, and is set to host its sixth annual event on June 16 at the Kipling Recreation Centre from noon to 4 p.m.

“In previous years we had a membership with Canadian Food Championships, which meant the winning vendors had the opportunity to move on to a national food competition,” Judy Larson explained.

“Unfortunately CFC is no longer available. The funds which were previously designated for CFC membership will

be used as prize money to be awarded to each of the four winners along with their trophy.”

In the past the bacon festival has seen almost anything you can make with bacon: bacon jam, candy bacon, bacon sushi, bacon crepes, bacon soup, maple bacon cookie dough truffles, bacon wrapped shrimp, bacon bruschetta, bacon crème brule, bacon stuffed mushroom caps, jalapeno wrapped bacon, sausage wrapped in bacon with raspberry sauce, peanut butter bacon cup cakes, bacon ice cream, bacon caramel rolls, asparagus wrapped in bacon, and much more.

“We have two new confirmed vendors this

year – Otis with TilliBeans Bakery & Coffee Shop in Wolseley and Heather Williamson with The Chaparral in Arcola,” Larson added.

“There’s a number of returning chefs and home cooks. It’s best to watch our Facebook where vendors and sponsors are updated regularly.”

“As for new items this year – I know we will be having bacon cabbage rolls from one of our returning home cooks, but generally most of the chefs like to keep us in suspense until the day of the event. We have never been disappointed and everyone brings their best game!”

The big city and litte things

This past weekend my sister and I took our mom out to Vancouver.

There were a couple of things that struck me about the big city…

Transportation: Although busy, we never hit the gridlock of rush hour while there.

Kelly Running But, something that always Observer Staff impresses me with cities is its ability to move people. The infrastructure is based on it. There’s the SkyTrain, numerous buses, the SeaBus, and more.

There’s bicycles sitting out and about to rent.

You ride them then drop them off at the nearest stand to where you are. And almost everyone is on foot.

We spent a little bit of time up at Whistler as well and there everyone is on their bicycle or are walking. There’s a few cars, but with the Lower Village only accessible by foot, a lot of people simply park and walk or ride their bikes.

From there buses are regularly scheduled between communities making it easy to commute from somewhere like Squamish to Whistler.

Although I’d love to be able to walk more places or ride my bike around here to different destinations… we don’t have the same infrastructure set up that facilitates the ease of movement. That and we don’t seem to really use the rules of the road for bicycles in the way that we should. Besides in Whistler anyways there were numerous walking/bike paths that meant you didn’t even have to be on the road with vehicles. In downtown Vancouver though they make it work between traffic, pedestrians, and bicycles.

Additionally things are so far apart here that if I wanted to take my bicycle up to Kenosee I better hope I don’t have troubles with my bike on the way or else I’m stranded and it’s not as easy as hopping on a bus like it would be there.

Dogs: I was so impressed with the dogs that we came across both in Whistler and in Vancouver. Typically when a dog is off its leash the first thought as it’s bounding towards you is if they’re friendly and if they jump. Although those two questions crossed my mind, I was pleasantly surprised to find they were so well trained that they wouldn’t even pay you any heed.

The dogs that were on the trail off leash weren’t too far from their owners, but they had run far enough along the trail that you couldn’t see where their owners were. They were quite happily playing and paid no mind to us. When their owners came around the bend they told the dogs to come. Off the dogs went to stand right beside their owners.

Even walking in downtown Vancouver I was impressed with dogs that weren’t on leashes. They simply stayed at their owners’ side and as they walked along the dog acted as though it was on a leash… that is on a leash and being behaved – no pulling.

I was quite impressed.

Even through sleepy eyes there’s often cause to celebrate What would you get up in the middle of the night to do? Attend to a crying child? Check on a startling noise? Search for an extra blanket? What about to watch a televised event?

I have gotten up at some pretty random hours to catch live coverage of the Olympics, to watch world championship hockey, to check on the rescue efforts of My Outlook Chilean miners, and to watch the Shelley Luedtke wedding of Prince William. Yes, my plan is to be up and alert to join a worldwide audience who will be watching the nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in a couple of days.

There are detractors with events such as these protesting the dollars being spent, pointing out where those resources could have been diverted, questioning the relevancy, and on it goes--as it always does with any large commemoration or celebration. It’s hard to defend against their perspective and yet…there is something rather wonderful about an event that draws people into a mood of joy and celebration.

I’ve shared before about my brush with a different royal family when my university campus hosted a visit from the then-Crown Prince and Princess of Norway. Preparing for their visit began months earlier with an assessment of needs and the implementation of a game plan. Exteriors of buildings were pressure washed, window frames received fresh paint, flower beds were expanded, and the lawn along the route of their walk-about was expertly manicured.

As a student employed by the university that summer I joined the team about two weeks before the visit. Our job was security, which we quickly learned wasn’t going to be as much about protecting people as it was containing them. My task was to be stationed at one of the cordoned off areas and keep visitors behind a rope while the royal couple passed by.

With all eyes on the guests and dignitaries it’s unlikely many people noticed the work that had been done on the campus grounds in preparation for the event, but in the end that mattered little.The work needed to be done regardless, but the visit was the impetus to get it on a list and earmark time and resources for its completion. The extra effort under-

taken had a timeline to coincide with the occasion, but the result of the work was really for the benefit of all those who would be on the campus in the weeks, months and years that followed.

We sometimes need a special event to spur us on to complete something we know needs to happen anyway. That room that needs painting, the kitchen that needs an upgrade, the deck that needs fixing. It may have been on the to-do list for quite some time but when something out of the ordinary is on the horizon we can more readily find the time and resources to get things done. Sometimes a celebration is what’s needed.

A girl I went to school with was planning to have a small, family wedding on Boxing Day. She asked her aunt and uncle, who lived in a beautiful home on an acreage, if she could get married in their living room. They readily agreed but then got thinking it might not provide enough space. They decided it was time to tackle their unfinished basement--a project they said they would “get to” when time allowed. Several years later the basement looked the same as it did when they bought the house. But with the prospect of hosting a wedding they busily got to work. Even though they were still adding touches late on Christmas Eve, they were so happy they tackled the challenge. Their living room would have sufficed but they were excited to have a finished basement and truly thrilled to see their niece get married in the new space.

Stadiums don’t need fireworks to erupt after a home run or touchdown but it sure adds to the fun.

The work of government is not defined by the role of ceremony but the formality is certainly welcome to balance the rather undignified we often see. A wedding is, at its core, the exchange of promises, but add a touch of pomp and pageantry and it is something that might make enough people pause and take a moment to simply enjoy being together.

We need to embrace the opportunities that give us a chance to celebrate, to pull together, and to work towards something we can look back on and smile. Sometimes those moments happen in our own homes and sometimes something special comes along that just might rouse us out of our slumber to join people around the world in experiencing a moment that simply draws us together. The very fact that we have events to celebrate is cause enough for celebration. That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money: Your post-grad financial checklist Congratulations – you’ve earned your degree or diploma! Now is the perfect time to take a few minutes to review this fivestep post-grad tutorial that will help you get a solid financial start on your new life.

1. Manage your student loan For the first six months after graduation, you don’t actually have to make a payment but interest will accrue. Find out what your payment will be and include it in your budget. More is better but make at least the minimum payment each month. If you are unable to make payments, contact the loan provider right away.

If you have a Canada Student Loan, you may qualify for the Repayment Assistance Plan. If yours is a bank loan, you may be able to negotiate temporarily lowered payments.

2. Save for tomorrow with an RRSP Consider putting the power of com-

pounding to work for you by contributing to investments held in a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) because investing even a small amount each month can build considerable wealth over the years.

Plus contributions to RRSPs are deductible from your total income in the year in which you chose to claim the deduction. Another RRSP plus: If you’re thinking about buying a home in the future, the federal Home Buyers’ Plan allows eligible individuals to withdraw up to $25,000 for a home purchase from their RRSP without any immediate tax consequences.

3. Save smart with a TFSA Start a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA).

It complements your RRSP because investments held in a TFSA grow tax-free.

Each year $5,500 of new TFSA contribution room is created and unused room carries forward. If you need access to your TFSA

balance, you can get your money back out at any time, for any purpose, taxfree. However, there is no reduction to your taxable income for TFSA contributions.

4. Avoid high credit card debt Credit card interest rates can be 20% or more so limit their use. Try to pay the balance in full each month, and pay on time to avoid late fees and additional interest charges.

5. Develop a budget – and stick to it Include all unavoidable expenses such as rent and utilities and be mindful of discretionary expenses, such as travel, that you can control.

1. Avoid tobacco and smoke. It goes without saying that smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke are terrible for your respiratory health.

2. Wash your hands.

Many types of bacteria, including those that cause respiratory tract infections such as the common cold, are spread mainly via people’s hands. Frequent hand washing with soap and water, especially before handling food and after going to the bathroom, is the best defense against germs.

3. Improve air quality.

Poor-quality air can irritate the lungs, so be sure to regularly dust your furniture and vacuum your carpets. It’s also a good idea to open your windows for a few minutes every day

and maintain your home’s ventilation system. Additionally, avoid introducing irritants such as fragrant air fresheners and strong pesticides indoors.

4. Exercise. Physical activity improves lung capacity and helps oxygen travel through your body more efficiently. Try to get some exercise every day, even if it’s just by choosing the stairs over the elevator.

Get vaccinated.

There’s no better way to prevent seasonal influenza than by getting your flu shot. Immunization against pneumonia is also recommended for some people — ask your doctor.

A passion for karate: Marlee Cormier training for success Kelly Running Observer Staff

Marlee Cormier of Carlyle has continued her success over the past year competing on the Shintani team – Shintani Wado Kai Karate’s Team Canada.

“I originally joined karate because my older cousin was doing it,” Cormier explained.

“When I was around 8-years-old I went to my first national tournament in Ontario. This was the first time I’d seen the Shintani national team. From then on the team members were people I looked up to and making the team became a goal and a dream of mine. As I got older these dreams became even more important to me.”

Cormier’s focus and drive landed her on the Shintani team in 2016.

She has continued to push and better herself.

“Over the past year I have been training and teaching karate,” Cormier explained. “Recently I moved to Calgary to continue training.”

She has seen much

success over the year having competed around the world. In September the team was in Dublin, Ireland where she finished 5th in kata and 7th in kumite. In October she competed in Winnipeg earning a 3rd place finish in kata and 2nd in kumite. November saw competition here in Carlyle where she took 1st in kata and 2nd in kumite.

January she spent time in Saskatoon earning a 3rd in kata and 1st in kumite. In Calgary this past March she finished 3rd in kata and 2nd in kumite as well as 2nd in the open kata and 1st in the open kumite. Competition in Halifax was tough, but she finished 9th in kata and 7th in kumite.

Internationally she then travelled to Las Vegas where she placed 3rd in the U21-61kg, 6th senior-61kg, and 2nd with team kumite. Then back in Canada she competed in Saskatoon placing 2nd in kata, 2nd in “role the dice” kata, and 2nd in kumite. Most recently she competed in Calgary where she earned 3rd in the U21-61kg kumite, 3rd in senior-61kg kumite,

3rd in the u21 open weight, and 2nd in the senior open weight.

Coming up she will be competing in the Shintani National tournament May 25-27 in Ontario.

“My favourite part about being on the team has been all of the experiences it has given me,” Cormier said. “I’ve been able to travel and meet people from different places in the world.

Being a part of the team has given me so many incredible opportunities.”

“The dojo is a place where I have always felt comfortable. I love being able to travel anywhere in Canada and have somewhere to go that feels like home.”

Quinn Brown of Arcola is also on the Shintani Team and has been hard at work both at the University of Regina as well as with training.

“I have been able to practice in Regina at the local Shintani Wado Kai Club (McLurg School) as well as many weekends up in Saskatoon training with the Prairie Karate Association (PKA) Team,” Brown said. “The weekend trainings were with a group of Shotokan practitioners which has helped me expand my karate knowledge and skill set.”

Brown has ensured the time to focus both on his schooling – a Bachelor of Science – and the Shintani Team.

“As of the end of April I have completed my fourth year of schooling,” he explained. “I have taken a reduced course-load throughout the last few semesters to accommodate for the busy schedule that I split between karate and school. It has made university far more manageable, while still fulfilling my desire to pursue karate.”

“As a member of the Shintani Team, I have been able to compete and train with some absolutely amazing people. I have been able to travel and compete all across Canada as well as internationally, which has led to meeting some incredible people.

All of these things have gone on to shape my karate experience the past two years.”

Notably over the last year, Brown says, “I have gone to quite a few tournaments this year, notably the Irish International Open, and Karate Canada Nationals. While I didn’t come out of these tournaments with any hardware they offered international and national experience, respectively. I felt that I competed well at both and they have definitely helped me grow as a karateka. I look forward to the Shintani National Tournament a little later on in the month.”

For Brown, who has achieved the rank of Nidan (second degree), he enjoys pushing himself in both the kata and the kumite.

“I achieved the rank of Nidan in May of 2017, it will be at least three more years until I can even attempt to get my Sandan (third degree) as there are both time requirements at the rank as well as minimum age requirements.”

Overall he says he enjoys karate for a few different reasons: “It has allowed me to meet and talk to many people in our organization who have been around

the SWKKF for far longer than myself allowing me to get an idea of the history of the organization.”

“Although real-world application of being able to defend yourself is important, karate has also taught me control and discipline which can be applied to so much more.” “[And] I think the focus to allow myself to get to this level of competition that I am at stems from a sheer passion for karate. The SWKKF as a while is an inviting, likable group of people who are almost like another family.”

Brown’s next competition is also coming up May

25-27 in Ontario at the Shintani National tournament.

“I would just like to thank all of the people who have taught me, trained with me, and taken me into their homes throughout my karate career as they are all an important part of who I am as a karateka.”

Roy Bortolotto attended Ancient Spirals Retreat near Saskatoon May 7 to 10. This is part of his continuing education for the ministry.

Wes and Sherri Nickel who moved here from Alberta last year have moved to Saskatoon. Wes was employed

by Hebert Farms. They have family there and we wish them well in their new location.

The annual Huntington Walk held on Apr. 26 raised $2724.00 which also included a coin box at the C-Store.

We understand that this amount will be doubled.

Marjorie’s daughters (Joanne, Marion, Barbara and Lynn) appreciated those who took part in the walk and those who donated. This is their way of honoring their mother, the late Marjorie McCaw. The funeral service for the late Rita Beauchesne was held at the Wawota Town Hall on May 11. She passed away earlier in the week.

Interment was in the Dumas Cemetery.

The former Colborn residence owned by Ernest Hourd has been sold. The new owners at 601 Hill Avenue are Alistair and Tamara Chalmers and family.

Word has been received of the passing of Darcy Pryce of Regina.

He passed away on May 5 and was 59 years old.

He was the oldest in Ellis and Gertie Pryce’s family. Sympathy goes to siblings, Brenda Hill and her family, Brent Pryce and his family members and family members of the late Barry Pryce.

Maryfield Villa News Submitted by Janet Mark Thank you to all gardeners, past and present, who have helped create the Villa courtyard. Freda Longman remembers being at a tree planting ceremony, when a 2 or 3 foot evergreen was planted outside the north window of the lounge. It is a haven for birds and a joy forever. June Thompson came to hose down the courtyard walls and give all the beds a thorough watering. Next day she brought pails of well rotted feedlot dirt to give the budding tulips a boost; and edged the ditch around each bed.

She has new pots of daisies to put in the tubs.

A coloured little shrub, Abelia, will change from green and yellow, to white and red in the fall, and more colour in the winter. This week we begin sitting under the trees out there.

Circle of Friends this week dealt with favourite pastimes: fishing, bird watching, riding, handicrafts such as knitting, crochet and quilting, which some of us still do.

Games still go on, with Ted Stremil teaching us Canasta.

It is a joy to be able to walk, and see the wonderful trees of Maryfield leaf out.

Visits included: Jack Lemoine, Wendy and Kelly Greenbank, Leanne Jackson, Samantha Penner and Greg and Dianne Darby.

Duties Provide support to the foreman in overall management of the town which would include transportation, landfill, assist with day-to-day operation, cleaning, maintenance and safety of all equipment and facilities.

Assist with operation of all water and sewer systems for the Town of Alameda including operation of the water treatment plant and sewer lift. Read meters quarterly. Complete daily water testing to ensure quality.

Operate and maintain equipment including grader, tractors, sweeper, and mowers.

Work with the Foreman on any street maintenance, water and sewer maintenance and property development.

Qualifications A criminal record check, minimum Grade 12 or GED, and class 5 driver’s license are required. The ideal candidate will already possess or be willing to obtain their Level 1 water and Level 1 wastewater certifications. Experience running a grader, mechanical aptitude, and management experience are beneficial. The successful candidate must be self-motivated, work well with a team and independently, possess good communication skills and be community minded.

Alida News Submitted by Edel Cowan

The Alida community wishes to welcome Amanda Mudliar and Damien Kahpeepatow to Alida. They have purchased a house (the former Reid/LeCamp one) to make their new home here. Welcome to Alida folks – hopefully you will enjoy our little town.

Faye Walker spent from May 8 – 13 in Saskatoon where she visited with her daughter Deidra, Jeff Nickle and granddaughters Olivia, Abby, Claire and Piper.

During the first couple of days Faye attended the Superannuated Teachers meeting, and then spent the reminder of the days visiting and celebrating Mother’s Day with her family.

Kelly Fowler (Carnduff) accompanied Faye to Saskatoon to attend the STS meeting.

Ainsley Cowan invited her mother, Shelly to attend a Mother’s Day Tea at Redvers School which was hosted by the Grade 3 class on Friday, May 11.

We received word of the resent death of Allan “Pat” Gatenby of Dodsland, SK. He passed away at the Kerrobert Hospital on Apr. 30 at the age of 90 years. Pat had lived in

Alida in the 1960s-70s when he worked for Imperial Oil Co. and was also involved with baseball while here. The Alida community extends their sincere sympathy the Gatenby family.

Marcy’s Diner held a Mother’s Day Breakfast Buffet on Sunday, May 13. There was a good come and go crowd who attended this buffet during the five hours of operation. It was delicious as always Marcy, keep up the good work. The winner of the Mother’s Day flower arrangement was Teresa Lemieux, Alida – Congratulations Teresa.

Shelly Cowan and daughter Ainsley spent a couple days in Minot where they visited with the Nilsen family and celebrated Mother’s Day with her mom/grandma Orlys later Sunday afternoon. Ainsley had a dental appointment on Monday before they returned home to Alida.

Summer activities are beginning to happen around Alida now – keep your eyes and ears open as to when things are happening and come out to enjoy them. Right now you will see the flower pots are set out on Centre Street again.

Boy, oh boy, this is

spring weather is surely something to be appreciated. It’s been a long stretch of warm dry weather with some very windy days. Just a reminder to everyone that there is a Fire Ban in effect both in the Village of Alida and in the R. M. of Reciprocity. Please pay attention to these bans (we don’t need any grass fires) – take care out there. The seeding is progressing by leaps and bounds. The farmers should be pleased that things seem to be moving right along with no hiccups (so far). Here at the Cowan farms the guys are definitely going strong and if all goes well another week should see the end of seeding that is if the weather holds out.

Then one will be wishing for some much needed rain – yes, hard to believe that we’re looking for moisture now – but it is really dry out there.
