Skating to success:

Carlyle Skating Club hosts Regional Competitions Lynne Bell

The Carlyle Skating Club showcased their onice talent, their hospitality and their community at the Region 1 and Region 6 Invitational Skating Competition held Saturday, Jan. 14 and Sunday, Jan. 15 at the Carlyle Sports Arena. The club welcomed over 100 competitors, their families and friends-as well as local skating fans- to the two-day event, which featured free performances from competitors of all ages.

Fourteen of the Carlyle Skating Club’s 27 skaters competed in the Region 1 competition. They were: Nolan Cameron, Ciara Corrigan, Tiana Delalleau, Maizy Delmaire, Katie Desjarlais, Anna Doty, Kyla Fischer, Victoria Flynn, Nikki Lamb, Jessica Moffat, Ruby Parker, Brittany Rowe, Makenna Slykhuis and Halle Schutz.

“Skaters from throughout the entire southeast corner of Saskatchewan came to compete in both the Region 1 and Region 6 competitions,” says Anita Delalleau, Region 1 and Region 6 Invitational Skating Competition chairperson and Carlyle Skating Club president. “In Region 1-where our local skaters competed- we also welcomed competitors from Alameda, Arcola, Bienfait, Carnduff, Kennedy, Kipling, Moosomin, Oxbow, Redvers and Wawota.”

“For our Region 6 competition, skaters came from Esterhazy, Melville, Whitewood and Yorkton.”

“All of them are StarSkate-level skaters, so they put on a great show. They competed in freeskate, spins, jumps, interpretive, adult freeskate and team events.”

From the event’s inception, Delalleau stressed that hosting a competition of this size and calibre simply would not be possible without the contributions from volunteers, businesses and organizations from throughout the area.

“I am almost overwhelmed when it comes to recognizing everyone who made the competition a reality for Carlyle- especially with the short timeline we worked with,” she says. “My biggest fear is that I’ll forget someone and if I do, it isn’t because they weren’t appreciated. It’s because we were so overwhelmed with community support, that the sheer numbers of people we have to recognize is huge.”

“From the skaters, the skaters’ parents, the club parents who volunteered, the Carlyle Sports Arena for allowing us to host this wonderful event, the Carlyle Curling Club for use of their facility for our Paint Nights fundraisers, to the kitchen staff, to my fellow board members- Karen (Fischer), Dawn (Brady), Nickie (Doty), Katy (Soroka) and Mary (Moffat)- who all went above and beyond.There are just so many people involved in making such a huge undertaking happen.”

“The Carlyle Skating Club is so grateful to everyone who helped make this competition such a success,” adds Delalleau. “The sponsors, local businesses and volunteers who supported us, the officials, coaches and of course our skaters who made it all happen on the ice, our visitors and all of the spectators who came out to watch over the weekend.”

“And from the Carlyle Hooters- Ryan Benjamin, Steve Schultz, Brian Isleifson and Clint Dunn

were our muscle when it came up to setting up the judges’ stand,” she says.

“Throughout the weekend, we heard repeated praise about what a well-organized and welcoming event this was. People, businesses and organizations from Carlyle and our Club area really did us proud.”

“Hosting Regionals was a once in every 30-years opportunity and our local area really made the most of it.”

Hosting the Region 1 and Region 6 Invitational Skating Competition was “a once every 30-years opportunity,” says Anita Delalleau, Region 1 and Region 6 Invitational Skating Chairperson and President of the Carlyle Skating Club.

“We had originally planned on hosting it in 2019, but in September 2016, we were given the chance to host this year. Launch of Acute Stroke Pathway improves patient care across Sask.

With Monday’s formal launch of the Saskatchewan Acute Stroke Pathway, patients showing signs of a stroke will benefit from standardized care during the first few hours after the onset

of symptoms, which can significantly improve outcomes for many patients.

The pathway establishes consistent protocols for rapid, coordinated, high-quality care of stroke patients

across the province, ensuring that best practice care is available from ambulance to emergency room to hospital admission.

“People who display symptoms of stroke, no matter where they live in Saskatchewan, now have access to more timely and appropriate care during the first crucial hours following a stroke,” MLA Gene Makowsky said on behalf of Health Minister Jim Reiter. “Through the Acute Stroke Pathway, health care teams are working together to identify, evaluate and treat patients as quickly as possible.”

“When dealing with stroke, we’re working against the clock,” Saskatoon Health Region cerebrovascular surgeon Dr. Michael Kelly said. “By arriving at an accurate diagnosis quickly, we increase the chances of reducing or eliminating the sometimes debilitating damage a stroke can cause.”

Since 2013, Dr. Kelly and a team of stroke experts have worked with health system partners to align local procedures with national standards for hyperacute stroke care. Physicians and health region staff were instrumental in the adoption of the Acute Stroke Pathway protocols, so more patients can receive early assessment and access to life-changing acute

stroke treatment.

Pathway-based hyperacute stroke care is offered in seven primary stroke centres across the province and two tertiary stroke centres in Regina and Saskatoon.

Dr. Kelly holds a Saskatchewan Research Chair in Clinical Stroke Research, with primary funding by the Heart & Stroke Foundation and the provincially-funded Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation. This research chair contributes to a number of improvements in stroke care provincially, nationally and internationally.

“We are pleased that this pathway allows provincial implementation of guidelines based on the Heart & Stroke Foundation’s best-practice recommendations for hyperacute stroke care, and that Dr. Kelly’s role as research chair supported the adoption of the pathway,” Heart & Stroke Saskatchewan CEO Allison Kesler said.

In 2015-16, 1,751 people in Saskatchewan were hospitalized for stroke. About half of all stroke patients experience some permanent or long-term disability.

Carlyle to host Robbie Burns Night Lynne Bell

A celebration of a venerated Scottish tradition is coming to Carlyle this year, as Robbie Burns Night moves from Alameda to Carlyle. The 2017 event marking the Scottish poet’s birthday will take place Saturday, Jan. 28 at Carlyle Memorial Hall and Jenn Sedor-one of the event’s organizerssays: “We’re adding our own twist to the evening this year. It will still follow the traditional Robbie Burns format- with pipes, toasts to lads and lassies and of course, the haggis. But after the supper and the Burns entertainment is over, we’re opening it up to a dance, with Katie Miller providing the music.”

“It’ll be a great night of entertainment.”

Sedor says that the upcoming Robbie Burns event is making the move to Carlyle “because we needed a bigger venue. People come back year after year... and we’re looking forward to seeing some new faces there, too.”

2017 will be the fifth year for the annual Robbie Burns celebration in this area and is organized by members of the local Freemasons. The Scottish poet and lyricist lived from 1759 to 1796 and his legacy is celebrated every year throughout the world and every year on or near his birthdateJanuary 25.

Burns suppers follow a format which typically include pipers, dancers, toasts to lads and lassies and of course, the piping in of the haggis.

Piper and event organizer Regan Miller laughingly says: “If people look up the ingredients in haggis, they’d probably be disgusted. But this one is from an abbatoir near Brandon.

There’s a Scottish Society there and the Welsh couple who own the abbatoir have made us a haggis that’s modified for modern tastes. It’s their own recipe and it’s not only palatable, it’s pretty good.”

“It comes to us already cooked and basically, we just warm it up in the oven. Our haggis is 15 pounds and if we get 120 peoplewhich is what we’re hoping for- to come out, that’s enough for about two ounces per person.”

Sedor says that her first taste of haggis was a pleasant surprise, adding: “It looks and tastes like crumbled-up sausage. And I’d like to add that there’s no pressure for anyone to partake of haggis. Our main course is a roast beef supper prepared by Shelley and David Slykhuis

and there will be plenty of toasts and some great entertainment, so it will be a delicious-and fun- meal, whether someone eats haggis or not.”

Sedor says the event’s dress code won’t be strictly upholding tradition, either. “The organizers have to dress up and if people want to dress up, we encourage them to do so. I always say if a guy has a kilt, this is the night to put it on,” she laughs. “But the idea is to celebrate and welcome the next generation to the celebration.”

“It is a family event,” she continues.

“But there won’t be kid-specific activities there and there will be a cash bar and some toasts, so I’d keep that-and your child’s comfort level in mind if you’re thinking of bringing them.”

“The first time I ever went to a Robbie Burns Night, it was in Alameda,” adds Sedor. “My husband Tim and I were the youngest people in the room, along with Natalie and Regan Miller.

We had a great time and we really enjoyed it.”

“I laugh, because I thought I had a Scottish background, but when I went looking for my tartan, it wasn’t there and I found out my heritage is actually English, not Scottish,” she says.

“But the whole point of Robbie Burns is that everybody can celebrate the heritage of a lot of people from this area who do have Scottish roots.”

“And so many towns in this part of Saskatchewan are named after poets- Carlyle is named in honour of Thomas Carlyle, to name one. So it’s an evening of entertainment and part of a lot of people’s heritage.”

“We already have people from different communities in our area who have purchased tickets and often people, buy tables,” adds Sedor. “But whether you come on your own or as part of a group, you’ll be joining a worlwide celebration right in this corner of the province.”

After 104 years in the community of Wawota, the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) has decided to close branch services in the town, a decision confirmed by Regional Vice President, Ed Kaulbach at a community information session held by RBC at the town hall in Wawota on Thursday, Jan. 12.

Good business in current economic times means being able to grow and thrive with the quickly changing world, this includes keeping up with technologies. According to Kaulbach, with the RBC this adaptability and ever evolving landscape of the digital age regarding business is why they’ve decided to close the doors to its branch in Wawota in May and is a decision he didn’t make lightly.

“When I first started banking, people would come in and they would bank with a branch, they’d be anchored to that branch and we had a bunch of services that would support it,” Kaulbach explained. “Now, what has happened, is the majority of our customers bank with Royal Bank and branches are one of those things that are important, but it’s not the only important thing they rely on to do their banking; there’s all these other ways that they bank. We have customers that move all over the country and they don’t change their home bank anymore because they are connected to the Royal Bank.”

“Now I understand that’s not everyone and people in this room have a great attachment to Wawota and with the team I have here, no wonder you do. I do appreciate that; but, banking is changing and it’s becoming more than just branches.

People aren’t coming into the bank as much as they used to and when they come in they come in for different reasons… they don’t come in on a regular basis.”

Kaulbach added, “What’s become clear to me in the last couple of years is that people aren’t coming in like they used to and they’re also banking outside of the community, and I respect their right to bank outside the community, but we also have to make changes because of that.”

“We are really a community-based bank and not a branchbased bank; I feel responsible for over 35 communities and not all of those communities have branches and that’s because people are connecting with us, and choose to connect with us, in different ways than they used to connect with us in the past.”

In Wawota, the branch, according to Kaulbach, has not been meeting its business plan for a number of years and although they’ve put effort into growing the business, it has declined due to peoples’ changing digital habits.

“When we adjust our branch network we’re doing so because we’re growing our business and putting more people in the field,” Kaulbach said, explaining that many employees now meet with clients outside of the bank and at their place of business.

Although Kaulbach says the branch is closing he wants to see a continued relationship between RBC and Wawota. He acknowledged their want to continue having a presence in the community and offer alternative ways to move forward without branch services in Wawota. This includes a Digital Advice Night to be held on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Wawota Community Hall.

“I would strongly recommend that if you don’t know how to do that, that you should come even if you make other [banking] decisions because it’s important you learn to do those things because the decisions we are making are a result of the digital economy and not just a result of what’s happening with banking,” Kaulbach stated. “We want to give you five dollars to deposit into your account, so you can turn around and donate it to the playground to show how easy it is and demonstrate our commitment to the community.”

“I understand that losing any business is tough; I understand the change to the landscape; but, we still need to make responsible business decisions and we really do want to help people.”

“The decision has been made to close the branch, so it’s about how we can move forward. The decision isn’t open for debate. We’re a business and we have to make business decisions; and sometimes those decisions aren’t easy, but we have stuck in the community for a long time – 104 years – and in the past five years the business here has been tough for us.

It predates the oil downturn… but we are still going to service the community, we just aren’t going to have a branch, and I know for some people that’s not going to be enough and I apologize if you feel that way; but, we at the Royal Bank will try to do the things that we can and support your community.”

However, the many community members of Wawota and the surrounding area were irate with the decision to close down the branch as they feel the branch is an integral part to the community.

Voicing their opinions included Shannon Houff, the President of the Wawota Business Enhancement Group and owner of Front Porch Interiors: “What happens when one of us is at the Big Way grocery store in town and have some trouble with our debit card? We have to drive to the Moosomin branch. We get a new Visa or Mastercard in the mail and we need to put a new pin in; we get to drive to the Moosomin branch.

Where do businesses go to get coins and cash, or your daughter that needs something for the garage sale we have in town? We have to drive to the Moosomin branch. We need to deposit cold, hard cash today? We need to make a trip to the Moosomin branch.”

“If you take these examples and consider that Moosomin is about 57.5 km, one-way, to Moosomin, so a round trip of 115 km, with a typical $0.52 a kilometre for mileage and wear and tear on your vehicle, each trip to Moosomin branch would cost us about $60. So, it’s not going to take much for most people in this room to spend about $1,000 a year, minimum. Not only is that a hard pill to swallow, when they leave the community they will likely do some other shopping at the grocery store, the green house, the hardware store, grab some gas in Moosomin; this really hurts the Wawota businesses, but what most people – including banks – do not realize is that it hurts each individual in this room.”

Do you want to know why? They care about our lifestyle. They choose to be part of our communities by having a physical face in our community.

A physical presence in our small towns. So, I stand here to tell you RBC, please don’t bother coming into my personal business to chat about your new services. As you have decided to remove services, I have decided to support my community by moving all of my investments to a bank that’s present in my community.”

With that statement, Houff then addressed the room of approximately 40 attendees, “I want to ask - who else in this room has either changed or is considering changing where they bank – to please stand up and show the RBC how this will affect them.”

The entire group in attendance stood in response.

Speaking to those with RBC, Houff finished by saying, “Just so you all know if you are from a rural community, we have quality service, we don’t have push button things happen.”

To this, Haulbach explained that they are looking at setting up a cash counter (ATM) and other options for the community, which although there will not be a branch, they will still provide services and support to the community. He also referenced the use of e-transfers which are becoming more popular.

A local resident, Jeff Howe, then took an opportunity to speak. He cited RBC’s ranking in Canadian Business, which included 7th in Canada for revenue and number one in Canada for profit, before saying, “You guys represent the most profitable company in our country, so let’s make that clear. I began by saying my knee jerk reaction to this was, ‘No big deal.’ I immediately understood that it was probably a business decision as you’ve said and that it’s not going to affect too many people; but, that was a selfish mind frame I was in because I was thinking about myself. And then, I started thinking about my 95-year-old grandmother. She doesn’t live in Wawota, but she likes to go to the branch where she does live and I see on your website that only 20 percent of people now like to use the branch – as a national statistic – well that 20 percent, it isn’t the people like me, it’s people like my 95-year-old grandmother. It’s vulnerable people. It’s disabled people. It’s the elderly.

It’s the 17-year-old high school student who isn’t supposed to be on the internet much. It’s any number of people that value branch service. What about them? The 20 percent that gets marginalized when decisions like this are made should not have to take a back seat to the business decision making, they are as much a part of this business as I am; they’re as much a part of this business as everyone is…”

a responsibility to have boots on the ground when and where you can; there’s a responsibility to lead by example.”

Howe added, “And I know that you’ve probably given thought to this, I’m not saying you haven’t. I was a little bit disconcerted when I came in tonight, I apologize for coming late, but I came in late and one of the first things I heard from you is the decision has already been made and we’re not here to debate it… But I don’t think the town is there yet frankly and I beg you to reconsider and I suggest, sir, that when you’re looking at all of this that your obligation to the people of this area is to fight for the branches staying open when and where you can.”

“Having RBC in these little towns lends an air of credibility to the town itself and it’s sad to say, it shouldn’t be like that, but it is.”

In response to Howe’s statements Haulbach replied, “I agree with almost everything you’re saying, except we’ve come to different conclusions. We are proud of being corporate citizens. Our purpose is to help clients thrive and communities prosper, and we do that. It doesn’t mean a branch on every street corner anymore unfortunately. And we have decided purposefully as an organization that we are not going to go and close a whole bunch of branches; we are going to take a very measured approach when it comes to what do our customers need and where do they need a branch.”

The final concerns that came up that evening were voiced by community member Shirley Corkish: “A lot of us here in town belong to community

groups; ok, I need to get a float… nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars. I’m not going to drive all the way to Moosomin to get a float, I need a branch. Then, ok, we have our event. I have the money, again, nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars and I can’t deposit it at the Royal Bank here, I have to drive to Moosomin again. So, I have to volunteer my time, my gas, why would I continue with you?”

Haulbach responded, “We’re looking at a cash machine, I know it doesn’t give you coin, but I can also tell you that the trend right now with events is etransfer.”

Many in the crowd were unsatisfied with this answer as they felt it was a sign the rural community has been misunderstood and overlooked by those making decisions regarding their community.

The town-wide garage sale, bake sales, the museum, etc… are not venues where etransfers will be used. They need a cash float and to be able to make change.

Corkish then asked about the digital advice night to be held in February referencing Wawota as a “senior community,” consisting of a population that may not be online or even have computers, which Haulbach said is why they’re looking to help with the Digital Advice Night and potentially donating computers to help provide access to individuals in the community.

At the end of the night, there was discontent: the branch will be closing in May as a business decision has been made, while many in the community were disappointed that a solution that could better fit their community couldn’t be ascertained.

How firm a foundation

By Linda Wegner Ever had a tune or the words to a song go round and round in your head, no matter what you do to drown them out? While some songs may be just what you need to brighten your day, at other times the experience is less than what you’d like.

Recently I found myself entertained (or more accurately, annoyed) by the lilt and lyrics of a real oldie, Big Rock Candy Mountain. Many of you readers probably never have heard of it but for us older-timers, it’s a familiar reminder of the “buzzin’ of the bees in the cigarette trees”. That’s the line I couldn’t get out of my mind.

I admit to smoking one cigarette when I was a kid. I’ll tell you, though, a single puff of the smoke generated by hay wrapped in toilet paper will cure you for life! Cigarette trees not only fail to inspire me, they remind me of that choking event.

The tune I’ve entertained all this week is far

more inspiring and associated with far more blessed memories. “How firm a foundation…is laid for your faith….” has permeated my mind and spirit for these past days. I thought a lot about last week’s article and the redemption of David after his horrific sins. Though not to be compared with his, at least in human eyes, I marvel at the faith he demonstrated in acknowledging the mercy and forgiveness of God when so often I have struggled with guilt and self-condemnation. You, too? How comforting, then, to be assured that whatever we have confessed to God, He not only forgives, He forgets and while we may suffer consequences, they will not be eternal.

“As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” And never those two shall meet!

Wickenheiser retires

Having grown up near Shaunavon I remember seeing the metal sign on the west side of town proudly stating they were the home of Hayley Wickenheiser. It was so cool to me that someone as high profile as that was from a small town where my family would go to run errands. She was just like everyone else, only she Kelly Running was Hayley Wickenheiser, so not Observer Staff really just like everyone else.

I remember watching the gold medal match on television when I was nine. It was the first time women’s hockey was in the Winter Olympics and even if I wasn’t a hockey player, I was so excited to get to watch the Canadian women’s team play. I didn’t understand why they weren’t allowed to play before, so it was exciting. Disappointed they lost in the final that year it was that feeling of excitement and hope, that you could do whatever you put your mind to, if you worked hard at it and never gave up.

Then at 13 I remember the gold medal game was in Salt Lake City and the Americans had allegedly stomped on our flag heading into the game. It was later proven to be false, but the rumour was out during the game and Canada was fired up.

The entire women’s team played phenomenally in that game and it was so much fun to watch and cheer for Hayley. I am in fact a terrible skater and although I could play floor hockey pretty well, playing on the ice is a no. It’s a fantastic game though and I’ve always enjoyed watching it. But, getting to cheer for someone from the town over who made it to the Olympics, even if I had never met her, was very exciting. Then at the end of the game she called the Americans on the flag incident saying, “The Americans had our flag on their floor in their dressing room and now I want to know if they want us to sign it.”

Although after it turned out to be false allegations, I do think she apologized for her statement. But, I just remember at the time she seemed like a defender of our nation in some way. It was really cool.

Then I watched the battle in Torino on TV in 2006, she again dominated the ice. The following year she came to speak at my high school, bringing her two gold medals and her silver. Since then she’s claimed another two gold medals and has gone on to be the most decorated female hockey player ever and actually leads Hockey Canada in games played, goals, assists, and points over a total of 23 years on the Canadian women’s team.

She never broke into the NHL, but she did something that was unheard of, she played in the men’s professional league in Europe. Again, she proved that she was one of the best in the world. Just the other day she announced her retirement from the game and was honoured at the Battle of Alberta: a game between the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames.

Another hockey great was there, Wayne Gretzky, and he exclaimed: “You’ve touched so many lives.

You played with heart, desire, finesse, speed, skill.

You’re the female Gordie Howe.”

Although I’m not a hockey player, I do appreciate the sport and she was a hero of mine when I was younger. It started with finding out she was from a neighbouring town and I just wanted her to succeed simply for that reason to her being a great role model in general as her career unfolded and she became more and more high profile.

Now she’s headed into medicine and remains a great role model as she actively continues to pursue her dreams showing everyone that if you have the abilities and work hard that you can reach your dreams. Nothing is ever just given to you and even if you have all the ability in the world, people with better work ethics will pass you, so despite being naturally gifted – hard work is still everything.

Four score and seven years ago...

Have you had your fill of speeches lately? Provincial and federal elections, leadership campaigns, and of course the lengthy process south of the border has given us enough political speeches to keep pundits busy for rest of their natural lives.

As well, we’ve entered awards season in the entertainment industry ensuring the delivery of a steady stream of acceptance Shelley Luedtke speeches. We’re early into 2017 but cue the actresses, politicians and commentators that have already got us talking.

We have the ancient Greeks to thank for taking the task of oration and elevating it to an art form.

The effectiveness of using carefully crafted words and skillful delivery did not go unnoticed, and throughout history those wanting to affect change have turned to individuals gifted at presenting a spoken message. From Pericles to Abraham Lincoln; Winston Churchill to Martin Luther King Jr, creating a list of the greatest orators of all time sparks tremendous debate. Should Nelson Mandela make the list? Ronald Reagan?

Occasionally there is a portion of a speech that is so compelling in content and delivery it extends well beyond the moment and prepares to take its place in history. Like Patrick Henry in a 1775 speech urging Virginia delegates to join the American revolution: “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!” Or the words of New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig, who after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis stood in front of 60,000 fans and stated, “Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” And of course the words of John F. Kennedy in his inaugural address, “And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country.”

As Americans prepare for their 45th president, they had opportunity to listen to the farewell address of its outgoing one, an individual many add to that list of great orators. In the 50 minutes that

Barack Obama spoke he touched on many things, including a section on the importance of being an involved citizen. He remarked, “If you’re tired of arguing with strangers on the Internet, try talking with one of them in real life. If something needs fixing, then lace up your shoes and do some organizing. If you’re disappointed by your elected officials, grab a clip board, get some signatures, and run for office yourself.”

As historically important as these types of speeches are, and as much as we need those who can rally citizens and inspire action, they aren’t the words or interactions that have the greatest impact.

At the beginning of December my family had a very painful day which followed on the heels of a painful week. A phone call came from a gracious couple inviting us to join them for supper. We were very touched because we knew what sort of day they themselves were having.

A few days later there were a couple extra gifts put under the Christmas tree and when we opened them we were once again touched by their caring.

The gift for my husband was chosen because of something we laughed about while enjoying that meal together. The one for me was something I had talked about in this column in the weeks prior.

They were gifts so well suited because they took the time to listen…to take note of our favourite things…and to care enough to remember.

So put down the tech device and invite someone to join you for coffee. Get involved in a community project or offer help to someone who needs it. Get to know your neighbour and do something to show they matter.

The legacies of public figures are long debated and will change over time. And no doubt words they delivered publicly will play a role in determining their place in history. But as important as their speeches can be, they won’t leave the biggest mark on our lives. Those words belong to the people who see us not as part of the masses but as the individuals they want to share experiences with. So while I will take time to listen to speeches that set the course for nations, it is not the words delivered from a podium but the ones shared across the table that will do the most to shape my history.

That’s my outlook.

Snow

Finally! A small reprieve from the harsh cold winter. I didn’t really notice the cold because I have been too busy to get outside. When I had a few minutes in the last day or Krystyn Gillies two, I realized how long it had been, aside from running back and forth from the house to the vehicles.

It has been much to cold to take the toddler out because she doesn’t like getting stuck in the snow nor does she like the cold wind, which is relentless at the best of times. My husband has taken the outside chore duties on so I can stay inside with the kiddo.

I suppose I have had a few stints in the cold because it never fails for a vehicle or tractor to get stuck or refuse to start. My poor husband was tired of winter before it even started but since we got the snow dump at Christmas, his tolerance of the snow has vanished. Our trucks have been stuck more times than I can count and the tractor is just recently starting better after a small fortune was invested to better equip it for winter.

I can’t even count how many times I have ventured out in the cold to be the “key turner”, whilst

my husband sprayed the little can of miracles into the intake. It needed boosted almost every time and a few minutes in between each key turn before we would finally luck out and it would fire up.

When it would run, it would find itself stuck many, many times before the house yard and bale yard were cleaned out enough to navigate without incident. I have been pretty proud of our ¾ ton truck for being able to pop the tractor out of almost all the places it was planted. Except for at Christmas, those snow banks beat us all and swallowed up almost everything that tried to go through it.

I am not going to lie, I am a little worried about the potential for more snow. We are only in January and the nasty “wet, cold snowstorms” haven’t even happened yet! Where will we put the snow?

Will the power stay on? Will the plows be able to clear the roads? And most importantly, when it thaws, where will the moisture go?

Since being a “mildly affected”, 2014 flood survivor in the Gainsborough area, fall moisture levels along with huge snowfall amounts, it makes me wonder, what if we get rain during the thaw?

Will the farmers get out in time? Will the hay be

under water? Will the water table be super high again? Questions that we will not have answers to until it comes time for spring.

I know I am not the only nervous one, but I sure wish I had bought shares in sump pumps and rubber boots. I don’t think we will have to worry about a drought, but crazier things have happened. I know lots of farmers who have started calving this year are having issues already and it makes me nervous for those of us who wait until it’s “warmer ”, because it is bound to be wetter.

I really hope everyone has enjoyed this warmer weather stretch but I personally, find myself checking the weather for potential precipitation.

Although, the general rule of it not snowing when it is really cold, I witnessed that with a touch of freezing rain at -31 last week. I usually love winter, but this is a little out of my comfort zone as well.

I hope you’ve had more luck than us when it comes to cleaning out and being stuck, but if you haven’t and are feeling the end may never come, stick with it! Spring will be here before we know it and so will the mosquitos and rain and tornados.

We need to make the best of it because we choose to live here! Stay warm! And dry for that matter!

Gotcha Day When the occasion arises to describe the family I grew up in my standard line is usually “There were seven of us; six girls and one boy – and we had to cheat to get him!”

Jocelyn Hainsworth That’s right, after five little girls mom and dad were unwilling to roll the ‘let Nature take its course’ dice again and decided to adopt that little boy they wanted to round out their family. That little girl #6 happened very shortly afterward can be chalked up to Mother Nature showing them who was really in charge of such matters. She has a great sense of humour, Mother Nature does.

I was only nine years old the summer we started hearing this word “adoption”. Mom and dad had to go for meetings and they went to visit a family in town whose whole family was adopted, I imagine to talk to them about what to expect. From the fringes where I was observing all this, there was a lot to take in and as I remember it, by the way the grownups treated the word ‘adopted’ it seemed to be maybe something too far outside the box for our family. As an adult I now realize that this seriousness that my parents treated the process with was commitment, not anguish – although all parenting involves plenty of both.

I honestly couldn’t tell you how long it took between when they applied and the day when they announced that they were off to Regina to pick up a little boy who was going to be our brother. I wonder? Did I believe it was really happening?

How did my school day go? I can’t even recall if they were home before us, or the other way around, but I do remember how cute that darkhaired, brown-eyed boy was, and how all his new sisters all just fell in love with him.

On January 20th, 1965 – his Gotcha Day (the day we ‘got’ him) he was a chubby-faced, sturdy little boy with a little one-sided grin that we all marvelled was just like Elvis Presley’s. That mom and dad had chosen a name for him that gave him the same initials (E.P.) seemed like fate – he was just that darned cute. There were so many of us crowding in on him that day it’s a wonder he wasn’t traumatised, maybe mom held us all back, but he had us figured as his own personal groupie section in no time at all. He was spoiled shamelessly.

Until, of course, that little sister #6 came along, and he had to share the lime light.

For people who have no experience with adoption, who have never stretched their families in

such a way, it’s probably hard to understand how you can ‘graft’ a new branch on the family tree and have it bond so completely, but he is absolutely our brother; always has been, always will be.

With our gain though, it has to be acknowledged that someone else had to suffer his loss. I keep these unknown people – his mother especially – in the back of my mind. We know very little about them, but it’s not the financial or social facts that matter anyway. It’s the times we’ve shared that they didn’t. It’s the sense of humour they gave him but it’s us who get to laugh with him (or at him, as the case may be). When his birthday rolls around do they stop and wonder where he is; I know I would if I were them.

I’m not sure which came first – the chicken, or

the egg; are we the kind of family who are just open and therefore tend to adopt, or did my brother’s adoption open a door for us making it an easy decision to go ahead and adopt again? Regardless, two of our eight grandchildren are adopted as well, and with the arrival of the last one came the concept of having a Gotcha Day to celebrate when he joined the family.

It’s a lovely tradition and so simple an idea I don’t know why we didn’t think of it before. My brother is in his fifties now and as far as I can remember, has never had his big day acknowledged.

That will change this year as sister #6 is planning dinner and a cake and the rest of us will be there in spirit to celebrate too. We’re still glad we “gotcha”

The Carlyle Cougars met the Bienfait Coalers at home on Tuesday, Jan. 10, where they battled hard to hold Bienfait within two goals.

The Coalers won 6-4 in the match, which showcased talent and heart for the home team.

Bienfait was held back in the first half of the first period, but in short order they scored three goals: the first was earned by Tyson Price who was assisted

by Dylan Herzberg, the second was scored by Dallas Kickley and assisted by Dustin Stepp, while the third was scored by Matt Bourass assisted by Dustin Stepp and Dallas Kickley.

With Bienfait ahead 3-0, the Cougars capitalized on an opportunity at the end of the first with a goal by Brett Turgeon assisted

by Ben Johnstone and Kelly Currie. This goal gave them momentum heading into the second period.

The second period saw a lot of action as five goals in total were scored. The Cougars came out hot with Kelly Currie capitalizing on assists by Phil Doucet and Joel Mack, then Billy Greenwood saw an opportunity after being set up by the same duo (Doucet and Mack), and Ty Currie earned a goal with an assist by Cooper Fox and Brent McLean to take the lead.

Sitting at 4-3, the Cougars were unable to stop a final rush in the second period with two goals in the last two minutes of play.

Bienfait’s Dustin Stepp found the Cougars’ net with assists from Riley Tetreault and Dylan Herzberg and with less than a minute on the clock Preston Erickson scored a goal with assists by Payden Benning and Riley Tetreault.

The rest of the game saw both teams find opportunities, but neither were able to capitalize further and the score ended 6-4 in Bienfait’s favour.

The Cougars then took on the Oxbow Huskies on Friday, Jan. 13.

Carlyle came out to an early lead with Zach Brown scoring a goal with under three minutes to go in the first assisted by Phil Doucet.

The Cougars held the Huskies back, but in the last period

the Huskies pressed through the Cougars with Ryan Curzon scoring a goal assisted by Brody Haygarth and Brycen Odgers. Odgers then scored two other goals that period: the first was assisted by Haygarth and Blake Brooks, while his second was assisted by Haygarth.

The final score was 3-1 for the Huskies.

Upcoming matches for the Cougars includes games in town on Friday, Jan. 20, at 8 p.m. against Yellow Grass; Saturday, Jan. 21, at 8 p.m. against Midale in Carlyle; and Tuesday, Jan. 24, in Bienfait at 8 p.m.

Elsewhere in the league the Wawota

Flyers currently sit first (21 points) in the East Division followed by the Carnduff Red Devils (19 points) who are being closely pursued by the Redvers Rockets (18 points), while the Oxbow Huskies trail (14 points).

In the West Division the Bienfait Coalers remain on top (25 points) followed by the Yellow Grass What Kings (18 points), while the Midale Mustangs trail them (9 points), and the Carlyle PureChem Cougars behind them (4 points).

Top scorers in the division include Wawota players Justin Lamontagne (33 points), Brent Struble (30 points), and Riley Riddell (29 points).

Bantam Cougars back in action Marissa Logue Sports Contributor We are back after our Christmas break.

The Bantam Cougars faced off against the Estevan Flames on Jan. 9 in Bienfait. We only managed to put one past them in the second. The final score was 6-1.

The team then travelled to Milestone on Jan. 13 where they played a great game.

Milestone secured the first 2 goals in the first period. We came out strong in the second securing our first goal, to which Milestone answered back scoring one of their own. We were quick to secure another one leaving the score 3-2 for Milestone after the second. The third period saw Milestone earn their fourth goal,

the Cougars answered back with one of their own. The buzzer rang with a score of 4-3 for Milestone. The Cougars fought hard this game and played well together as team.

The Bantam Cougars will travel to Virden,MB this weekend for a tournament.

Next league game will be in Carlyle on Jan. 28 at 5:00 p.m. vs Radville.

Club volleyball season begins Submitted by the Southeast Vipers Volleyball Club The Southeast Vipers Volleyball Club’s 17U team competed on Saturday, Jan. 14, and Sunday, Jan. 15, in Yorkton in their first tournament of the season. The team consists of Zoe Dubois (Langbank), Hope Robertson (Carlyle), Sydney McKenzie (Midale), Kenna Harkness (Arcola), Madison Stinson (Lampman), Madison Riddell (Carlyle), Hailee Fleck (Lampman), Sadie Fichter (Lampman), Shae Johnston (Arcola), Katelyn Hutt (Lampman), and Kenzie Fleck (Lampman).

The girls played in a nine-team round robin amongst 17 and 18U teams. Although settling in the first couple of games they came out and found success. The team took on Fort Qu’appelle, Invermay, Carlyle, Lanigan, Muenster, Esterhazy, and Yorkton.

Only the top two teams from the round robin made playoffs and the Vipers would like to congratulate the Redcoat Rebels based in Carlyle on their efforts in making the final. It was a weekend of great volleyball.

The Southeast Vipers have expanded this year to include a 16U and a 15U team as well.

The 16U team this year is being coached by Amy Jackson and Tyson Hislop. Playing on this team is Abby Phair (Weyburn), Brooklyn Stinson (Lampman), Michelline Biermann (Manor), Makaila Mansfield (Wawota), Ciera Romanow (Corning), Dawson Fuller (Stoughton), Gracie Vogel (Stoughton), Sheredin Slykhuis (Carlyle), Katie Weinrauch (Lampman), Tristin Fleck (Lampman), and Morgan Robertson (Carlyle).

The 15U team is being coached by Shalane Haselhan. Playing for the 15U team is Micah Walbaum (Stoughton), Tori Chapman (Carlyle), Hailey Dahl (Arcola), Gracie James (Arcola), Lainey Dube (Lampman), Alicia Fleck (Arcola), Madison Cuddington (Manor), and Kennedy Laub (Lampman).

Falling asleep in church is good

By Ken Rolheiser If you are ever caught waking up on the job or elsewhere where it might be embarrassing, I recommend you strike a reverent pose and as you open your eyes say, “…we ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.”

I used to be lenient with students who fell asleep in my English class, especially if it was during a viewing of Hamlet or Macbeth.

I reasoned that in their high school and the world at the time the tensions and stress on a student could be severe.

If they found a place where they could relax from the “hounds”, so to speak, I should be understanding.

The Word Among Us January 2017 discusses ways to meditate in the Lord’s presence in church. St Teresa of Avila said that communion with God “is nothing more or less than a friendly encounter” with him.

The story of Ray illustrates this. With soft music in the background Ray took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and asked the Lord to touch his heart. “Ray felt a sense of peace come over him. It began in his heart and radi-

St Teresa of Lisieux once said that it didn’t bother her if she fell asleep while praying; she felt safe resting in the arms of her heavenly Father. In my New

Year’s article I said that sleep can be a prayer.

Just as trees change in the silence of the seasons, “Silence calls us out of our minds and guides us to our hearts.”

Silence permits the Holy Spirit greater room to transform us.

Sleep, like everything we enjoy in this world, is a prayer we offer to God in thanksgiving or even petition.

I remember offering up all the joy I received from a Thursday movie night in our parish when I was a child, and I offered that up for my mother who was suffering a gall bladder attack

that evening. And it worked.

I can not think of a more wonderful way of seeking God’s blessings than offering up our sleeping moments as prayer. Inspiration often comes to artists and the rest of us in our sleep.

Dreams can be a way for God to communicate with us, and there are many examples in the bible of how this happens, the most recent of which was the Gospel of the Epiphany about the Magi’s visit: “And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.”

Skating Competition

The Carlyle Skating Club hosted 2017’s Region 1 and Region 6 Invitational Skating Competition, Saturday, Jan. 14 and Sunday, Jan. 15 at the Carlyle Skating Arena. The weekend of high-calibre competition on the ice featured over 100 skaters from ages seven to adult. The event not only brought a weekend of spectacular skating to Carlyle but an influx of visitors from throughout the southeast corner of the province.

The two-day event not only provided a weekend of entertainment- free of charge- to spectators, it also provided an economic boost to the community and unique volunteering opportunities to area residents.

“This competition is a great opportunity to showcase our town,” says event chair and organizer Anita Delalleau. “The skaters all come from the

Not only of our board and our club, but of the rink, the volunteers, the businesses and the community. We had so many positive comments made about the weekend and everyone’s efforts made it an amazing weekend of skating competition.”

Weekly RCMP report Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle detachment of the RCMP responded to a variety of calls to service between Friday, Jan. 6, and Thursday, Jan. 12.

Animal complaint Loose dogs were reported in the Carlyle area.

Assault

There was an assault reported in the Carlyle area, but no one was charged.

Another assault was reported in the Carlyle area; there have been no charges at this time due to a lack of cooperation.

Assistance Someone reported concerns surrounding something on Facebook.

The Carlyle detachment has forwarded those concerns to another police force as it is from their jurisdiction.

Matters regarding child welfare and custody were addressed.

Members have

talked to senior groups and schools recently.

There were false alarms addressed.

Members attended calls regarding the Mental Health Act. Breach of release Two breach of release conditions were addressed: one is currently under investigation in the Carlyle area and the other – in Antler – was determined to be unfounded.

An individual is dealing with expenses on their credit card, which they didn’t have.

The RCMP and bank are working together.

Driving infractions Two separate incidents of people driving while impaired were reported, but the RCMP were unable to locate the individuals.

There were tickets issued for not having insurance - $580.

Intersection related tickets were issued, including not stopping at a stop sign - $230.

The speeding high this week was for $476.

Most of the remaining immediate Boutin family members were able to attend their father/ grandfather/great-grandfather Antonio’s funeral at Cantal on Friday, January 13. Following the internment there were many other family and friends, from near and far, who also attended the fellowship luncheon at Alida Hall.

Over the weekend I received word that Hazel (nee Kane) Jorgensen of Saskatoon (formally of Nottingham and Redvers) had passed away on January 13, 2017, at the age of 93 years. She is survived by her son, David, daughter Shannon, four grandchildren Jennifer, Carly, Erika and Conor, as well as two great-grandchildren. Internment will take place this coming spring at Dannevirke Cemetery.

Sincere sympathy is extended to all other family members as well.

Shelly Cowan and daughter Ainsley visited for a while in Estevan with Kelsey Rydberg on Saturday, January 14. They later met up at the Estevan Leisure Centre with Melynda Charles, her daughters Lily and Amy, and some other friends (all from Redvers) where they all helped Amy celebrate her 6th birthday. Happy Birthday Amy! This season’s second breakfast was held on Sunday, January 15 with Kitchen Group # 4 at the helm. They broke the total of 45 which was set last week – serving up 61 breakfasts – Way to go Guys and Gals.

Once again I spent most of last week watching curling – The Continental Cup was being played at Las Vegas. It’s a different format of curling, where North America (Canada/US) players go against

the World players in the different events, totalling up points for each win. They ended the week by playing skin games which finally ended with North America winning their 5th Continental Cup when they reached 31 points (World reached 19.5). The skin games were also won by Team North America.

This brought the final total points of 37 for NA and 23 for Worlds. What a great weekend of curling once again. Congratulations to all the curlers. Next event to be televised I believe is the Pinky’s All Star Skins games coming in February. Also keep a watch for some Provincial play-offs that should soon be happening in each of the provinces. Stay tuned to the television set.

Hopefully you have your ticket for the “Elegant Supper” which will soon be drawn (Jan. 25) as the supper is to be served by end of January (I believe).

The Alida Recreation Board will be busy serving your special supper choice to you and your quests.

Also on their agenda is the Annual Trivia Night and Supper to be held in February. Keep a watch out for ads and posters.

It was another week of miserably cold weather.

This sure has seemed like the longest winter we’ve seen in a long time where the cold spells have lasted week after week. The school buses didn’t run again for another couple of days this past week; hopefully they are able to run for a long stretch now with no more too cold days. Spring is coming!

A tireless champion for children NAOMI BRONSTEIN (1945-2010) Philanthropist

Naomi Bronstein believed one simple thing: every child has the right to live. She spent her entire life campaigning for orphaned and impoverished children in many places in the world and was instrumental in aiding numerous orphans improve their lives through facilitating adoptions, providing medical services and establishing orphanages. She dedicated herself entirely to her cause and ultimately died in Guatemala trying to bring much-needed medical services to impoverished children. Though she was sometimes called the “Canadian Mother Teresa,” she was much more militant and brazen than her saintly counterpart. File photo © CBC, author unknown. gration laws to ensure endangered children who needed urgent care didn’t die while slow-moving bureaucratic processes were carried out.

Born in Montreal, Canada, in 1945, Bronstein began her work with children by becoming a mother herself first. She married at 17 and had two of her own kids before she began adopting.

Over her lifetime she was the biological mother to four, and the adopted mother to eight internationally born children. Not content to tend only to her own family, she refused to limit herself when so many other orphaned children needed homes.

In 1970, Naomi travelled to Vietnam and Cambodia, where she opened orphanages and helped facilitate the adoption of hundreds of children to homes in North America. In 1975, a pivotal moment occurred in Vietnam when she saw a plane full of orphans crash shortly after takeoff, killing 140 of the passengers. Although she immediately dove into the wreckage in an attempt to help evacuate the survivors, the tragedy’s losses were arresting. Shaken but determined, Naomi was more resolved then ever to protect the children of the world.

Bronstein helped found charitable organizations like Heal the Children that provide medical care and homes to young orphans. She also worked in Guatemala on various projects, including the one she was in the midst of when she passed away at 65 years of age. This project consisted of revamping old buses and transforming them into mobile medic facilities to help poor children get much-needed health-care services.

During her lifetime, Naomi Bronstein received a number of honours and awards in recognition of her work, including the Order of Canada (1983) and the Royal Bank Award (1997). Any financial donation she received always went back into her causes, and this bravely determined Canadian lived and died modestly, without ever losing sight of her convictions.

CANADA’S SWEDISH COMMUNITY More than 175 place names in Canada are of Swedish origin, including Stockholm, Saskatchewan; Upsala, Ontario; and Malmo, Alberta. But this is not surprising given the important role Swedes played in our country from the very beginning.

The earliest Swedish immigrants were farmers and loggers who helped settle the Canadian West during the mid-to-late nineteenth century. Many came via the United States by way of North Dakota and Minnesota, eventually relocating to Winnipeg.

Saskatchewan, Alberta and eventually British Columbia were all settled by Swedes. Northwestern Ontario, primarily in and around Kenora, also became home to a large community.

After 1920 up until 1930, the majority of immigrants came directly to Canada from Sweden. This group was largely made up of industrial workers.

Before 1940, Winnipeg was the epicentre of Swedish-Canadian life. The city was host to a nationwide Swedish cultural organization, and Manitoba was the province that the majority of Swedes in Canada called home. The Swedish community in Winnipeg also produced the longest running and most influential Swedish language newspaper, the Canada-Tidningen, from 1892 to 1970. After the 1940s, many Swedes went to British Columbia in search of job opportunities—and warmer weather. Today, Canada’s westernmost province is home to the largest population of Swedish-Canadians.

According to the 2011 National Household Survey, 341,845 Canadians claim Swedish ancestry.

This large, vibrant group has infused its industrious spirit into nearly every sector of our nation.

Swedish-Canadians have made a positive impact in business, infrastructure, politics, the arts, music, science and much more.

Moose Mountain Lodge a year in review It was a busy 2016 at Moose Mountain Lodge.

The wonderful singing duet Leona and Shirley and Harvey have been here every Wednesday morning along with our other regulars in the afternoon, The Happy Wanderers, Sharps & Flats, and Fred’s Friends Band. We greatly appreciate all of them coming and putting smiles on the resident’s faces.

We are busy with the Student Placement program and general volunteers who play games, cards, decorate and make crafts with the residents.

We have had a great variety of musical entertainment that has come to visit throughout the year. Ellie Mae Foster played at our Volunteer Tea in April and the following May The Lodge had a lovely Mother’s Day Tea with the unforgettable Carragana Ramblers getting us tapping our toes to their beats. On occasion we were entertained by Marie Vail and Keith Olson.

Our local church groups come every Wednesday afternoon- Carlyle United church, Arcola United Church, Manor United Church, Onechurch, Roman Catholic Church, and Full Gospel ChurchMoose Mountain Lodge would like to thank you for all your dedication, it is greatly appreciated.

We would also like to take the time to thank all of the organizations in the community and outside area for hosting Birthday Parties once a month.

The lodge can also not forget the schools and their participation in making the year great. This year we had a visit from the Grade 5 & 6 classes.

They joined the residents in playing a large group game of Bingo. This paves the way for our regular Bingo volunteers- thank you for your weekly dedication to the game and our residents who can’t get enough of the activity.

Moving on from here, the Playschool kids came to visit our facility and sang for the residents at Halloween and Christmas along with the Dance Club that shared their performances for our gang.

What a sight to see!

Big shout outs to The Legion for hosting our Remembrance Day service, Friends of Moose Mountain Lodge in helping with the Chubby Chicken Dinner we had this year. Thank you to Caroline Shirley and friends that did the Teacups with candy. We can’t forget the Backyardigans who aided Activities with planting flowers, cleaning up the back patio and adding new tables and a carpet.

Thank you to Christy Jarvis, Jeanette Sedger and helpers for making Fruit Fridays possible and working so hard to keep it going every week. In August the Lodge hosted a Family BBQ ; thank you to Michelle Boutin and all of her helpers for making that happen.

Another shout out to all of our musical entertainment (you know who you are!) that came to perform for the Lodge this year. Just to name a few: Rory Allen, Boom Town Band, Lori Solomon, Eli Barsi, Walbaum Family Band, Fretless, Larry Kraus, Ryan Bender and the list goes on.

This year our residents had the fortunate opportunity to attend the Cornerstone theater productions so thank you to the theater group for the seats to the fall play and Dickens Festival Play.

The performance really made it memorable for the residents; as well as Teresa and helpers for taking our beloved residents in the town Handi-van.

Wouldn’t have been possible without you.

For Christmas, each resident received a blanket under the Christmas Tree on Christmas Day from Santa. Thank you to Dianne Wilson, the Carlyle High School, the Manor High School and Sew and

Sews for contributing fabric.

In December, Activities took a group of residents on two trips for our annual Twinkle Tour Ride. We would like the thank Christy Jarvis for driving the Handi-van for us this year. She made a really great tour guide.

In ending, big thank you to all our volunteers, helpers, groups, organizations, bands and all the members of Friends of Moose Mountain Lodge for all you do for the Lodge. Another big thank you to all the families for the treats, flowers, cards and goodies sent out to staff of our wonderful facility.

Evelyn and Michael Green spend the holiday season with family in Winnipeg, MB and Brantford and Waterloo, ON. Gloria McBride’s mother, Irene Schappert from BC is now living in Wawota with Neil and Gloria McBride.

Mark and Velda Weatherald enjoyed the Christmas holidays in Halifax with daughter Rayna and family.

Several people attended the RBC information session held on Thursday evening. I am not sure of the purpose of this meeting, but guess it was reassure us how important we are and how they are anxious to serve us. They apparently have had a 5% increase in money matters but a 10% decrease in people coming through the doors?? It was also brought to our attention that the RBC ranks as the 15th top company as for revenue and the top bank by profit in Canada. Amounts were quoted for these two statuses, but as they were so large and unfamiliar to me, I didn’t get them copied down.

The 10-12 representatives of RBC seemed unfazed when the public were asked how many of them had or were considering moving their accounts to a different

financial institution and almost all stood up (about 40 people)! I noticed three who didn’t, two were reporters and one hasn’t dealt with the bank in 20 years.

Sympathy to Tony, Terry and Lynda and their families on the passing of Lorraine Woroniak, their mother.

Lorraine, the widow of Ted Woroniak ,was a long time resident of Wawota. She worked as the town clerk. Her request was for a celebration of her life in Virden, MB in the early summer.

Gail Engle has returned home after an extended time spent visiting with family in

Calgary. She visited with the Stephen Eckarts and the Rob Watsons.

Word has been received of the passing of Myrtle Brehaut of Regina. She passed away on Jan. 2 at the age of 92 years. A private family burial has taken place. Myrtle was married to Bob Brehaut and they farmed 8 miles south of Wawota. Their family included, Garry, Karen, Carlie, Beverly and Brian. I have fond memories of Brehaut family get-togethers and socializing with this family.

Aunt Myrtle was the last of my aunts and/or uncles, on both sides of the family to pass away.

Regional Park Manager Moose Creek Regional Park (MCRP) is among Saskatchewan’s newest and fastest growing regional parks within the province. Located approximately 4 miles north of Oxbow, Saskatchewan adjacent to the Alameda Dam reservoir, this park offers some of Saskatchewan’s best recreational opportunities including great fishing and boating, what has been called the province’s best nine hole golf course, and over 200 full service campsites.

OBITUARIES Catherine (Kay) Barbara Raynard 1928 - 2017 Kay Raynard, late of Stoughton, SK, passed away at Newhope Pioneer Lodge, Stoughton, on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the age of 88 years.

Kay was predeceased by her husband Norval (Byng) Raynard; her parents, Henry and Barbara Didrick and her brothers Alex and John.

Communities benefit from Clean Water and Wastewater Fund Kelly Running Observer Staff

(Info from news release) The Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, and the Honourable Donna Harpauer, Minister of Government Relations and Minister Responsible for First Nations, Metis, and Northern Affairs, jointly announced that 28 new projects focused on water, wastewater, and transit infrastructure were approved for funding.

“The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to join with our federal and municipal partners to announce funding for 28 water, wastewater, and public transit projects across the province,” the Honourable Donna Harpauer stated. “These investments allow for continued growth in Saskatchewan communities and will improve quality of life for years to come.”

This includes projects in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan: Water Treatment Upgrade in the Village of Alida which is being funded through the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund (CWWF) with $160,125; the Town of Carlyle was approved for $447,500 through the CWWF for a Lagoon Aeration Upgrade; Water Treatment Plant Upgrades to the Town of Kipling was approved and is being funded through the CWWF for $2,230,000; and Sewer System Upgrades in the Town of Oxbow which are being funded through the CWWF for $156,000.

Ralph Goodale, federal Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness and Donna Harpauer, Saskatchewan Minister of Government Relations, which includes mayors and other representatives, attended the event in Regina.

These projects are being funded through the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund (CWWF) and the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund (PTIF), which will total over $38.6 million. The projects are part of a bilateral agreement between Canada and Saskatchewan, which was announced Sept.

16, 2016. This is in addition to the $56.8 million in federal funding announced that day for 10 water projects and 12 transit projects.

The federal government is providing up to 50 percent of funding for the newly announced projects – over $19.3 million – while the provincial government is investing over $8.9 million, and local municipalities will contribute the remaining balance.

“Infrastructure is the foundation of the Canada we all want to build for tomorrow,” the Honourable Ralph Goodale said on behalf of the Honourable

Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. “This latest round of water and wastewater projects will protect the environment and keep our communities healthy and liveable and will create well-paying jobs for the middle class.”

This funding comes through the first phase of the Investing in Canada initiative that the Government of Canada has put in place to support public infrastructure across the country. Over the next 12 years the Government of Canada will put more than $180 billion into infrastructure in – to be used towards public transit, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, transportation that supports trade, and to Canada’s rural and northern communities.

In total the Government of Canada is providing Saskatchewan with $89,342,112 through the CWWF and $29,000,000 through the PTIF – which will fund up to 50 percent of the new project costs.

George and Colleen McNeely had a very nice trip to Orlanda Florda recently. They enjoyed the relaxation very much.

Alameda 4-H report Submitted The Alameda 4-H Beef Club held their Dec meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 21. 27 members attended, Paige Freitag called the meeting to order with the pledge.

Grace Christensen read the minutes from the last meeting. She adopted the minutes as read. Janai Ricard seconded.

Fall rally report, members had fun and played games. Team grooming report: the members learnt lots and had fun at Agribition.

The intermediate team placed 3rd. And we had 3 junior teams enter, one also placing 3rd. Our field trip to Paton’s and Purpose Feed lot was postponed due to weather and will try again in February. Janai Ricard made a motion and Dylan Frey seconded.

Motion was carried. Our Christmas party will be on Dec 30 at 1:00 for tobogganing. Rate of gain date is set for Jan. 15 at 11. Out next meeting will be Jan. 10 at 7p.m. Dylan Frey adjourned the meeting.

Tobogganing was followed by hot chocolate and snacks at Silver goddess Boutique. Stacy allowed us to sit and have a warm up and refreshments.
