Smiles galore at Spring Fling Family Dance

Kids and their families enjoyed an evening of entertainment in Redvers at the Spring Fling Family Dance. Here two youth dance together during the festivities.

It was an opportunity to dress up and have fun on Saturday, April 22, in Redvers as the Redvers Early Learning and Child Care Centre hosted their annual Spring Fling Family Dance.

It was a magical night in Redvers at the Rec Centre where the Redvers Early Learning and Child Care Centre presented their third annual Spring Fling Family Dance on Saturday, April 22, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

The evening’s theme was Mermaids and Mermen, so when families walked into the curling rink, they were pleasantly surprised to find they were transported under the sea with decorations.

Smiles spread across kids’ faces and off they went

to enjoy – dressed in their best – music and dancing, games and activities, a photobooth, candy bar, cupcake bar, healthy snacks, lego beaches, and more.

The event is one of the major fundraisers hosted each year by the Redvers Early Learning Centre.

“We’re still totalling how many people were there, but we estimate over 160 people attended,” Brandy George explained. “It went very well and we had an extremely good turnout. It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year and this is the third year we’ve done it.”

Dressed to the nines this young girl enjoyed the Spring Fling Family Dance in Redvers.

“We had a lot of support this year and strong sponsors that made the event possible.”

The evening had youth entertained and having fun, while they also had the opportunity to win raffle prizes including a kayak or a bike – the big prizes for youth – and a signed Riders jersey – for the adults. Additionally, there were other raffle prizes available and you could improve your chances of winning by purchasing extra tickets to participate in the raffles.

“It was great!” George added. “Each kid got to take home a goodie bag, they all had a lot of fun, and we’re already looking forward to next year.”

Path to the Podium:

Local athletes wrestle their way to the top Lynne Bell

Four area athletes brought home medals as they wrestled their way to the podium at the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association’s (SHSAA) Provincial Wrestling Championship.

Seventeen-year-old Nathen Schmidt of Carlyle’s Gordon F. Kells High School defended 2016’s top title, winning provincial gold again this year. Fellow GFK students Dennis Bridge, 17 and Jordan Patriquin, 18, were awarded silver and bronze in their classes. Sixteen-year-old Angela Aalbers from Manor School earned a silver medal. The team was led by Coach Monte McNaughton and Assistant Coach Wendy Marcotte.

“They did well because they listened and worked hard,” says McNaughton. “And having our assistant coach Wendy Marcotte with us this year made a huge difference to the club. It was a great way to end the high school wrestling season.” “ (Monte) teaches us to approach wrestling one move at a time,” says Angela Aalbers. “We were one of the smallest teams at Provincials and I feel pretty good about getting a banner.”

“I gave a speech at the beginning,” says McNaughton. “I huddled them up and told them: ‘Don’t think about banners, the podum, wins...

Instead, be specific and keep a really narrow focus.

You can’t get ahead of yourself; then the moment becomes too big.’”

“Every match is hard to win,” says two-time gold medallist Nathen Schmidt. “But Monte taught us that if you do the little things right, then you can start to win. With wrestling, you have no one to blame but yourself. Consistency and hard work will see you succeed. If you train hard and if you have good work habits, you’ll see success.”

“I’ve been here before,” says Schmidt. “So I knew how to handle it and I kept my head in it. But it was really different defending my title. There was a lot more pressure on me - everybody wants to beat the guy who’s already been there.”

Schmidt’s teammate and three-time Alberta provincial champion, Dennis Bridge earned a Saskatchewan silver medal and says: “I came to Carlyle from Grande Prairie, where I was part of a wrestling group my dad started,” says Bridge. “My dad was my coach and I’ve been wrestling for a long time. I was three times Alberta provincial champion and I’ve come in at fourth-place, third-place and last year, second-place at Nationals.”

“I quit wrestling and then we moved to Carlyle,” adds Bridge. “Then I met the group here and it reminded me of a family, so I started again. In Alberta, there’s a larger population, so you have more wrestlers at every level, but here it’s a different experience, but still really competitive.”

Unlike veterans Schmidt and Bridge, Jordan Patriquin brought home a bronze medal after a mere two months of wrestling.

“I saw wrestling posted on the bulletin board at school, so I thought I’d give it a try,” says Patriquin.

“I wanted to step outside my comfort zone – and

that meant not wearing a singlet and touching other people,” she laughs.

“So I personally accredit all of my skills to my coaches and my teammates. They help me a lot,” she says. “I wasn’t supposed to make it to Provincials, honestly. I’ve had four tournaments so far - and that includes Regionals and Provincials. The team really is like a family and (coaches) Monte and Wendy are great. Everything I know about wrestling, I owe to them.”

“Provincials were intense,” adds Patriquin. “I normally get nervous in front of a lot of people.

But the pressure to win all goes away once it starts.

Monte taught us to focus on small (wrestling) moves.”

“I was privileged just to be there. And honestly, I just think of doing the very best I can do.”

Aalbers agrees. The silver medallist says: “I joined the third year that wrestling was offered in Manor. I didn’t know if I’d be any good at it or not, but I thought I’d just try it out.”

“Last year, I got first at Regionals, but I didn’t place at Provincials,” she says. “At Nationals last year, I was in fifth-place. This year, I got gold at Regionals and at this year’s Provincials, I lost out on gold in the final round.”

“Monte taught us to concentrate on one move at a time,” adds Aalbers. “Last year, I think I got overwhelmed and was just focusing on the big picture at the end. But this year, I just broke it down, move by move and match by match.”

“I feel pretty good getting a banner,” she says.

“But I’m disappointed I didn’t get first. One match made the difference between silver and gold for me.”

“But wrestling has also given me confidence,” says Aalbers. “The first time I ever stepped on a wrestling mat, I had no moves and I was really shy.

Now, with more experience, I can walk on the mat confident that I’m ready to wrestle anybody and feel good.”

“Everyone worked hard this year,” says Schmidt.

“And our effort really paid off.”

Stoughton Co-op annual general meeting Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Stoughton Co-op hosted its Annual General Meeting on Thursday, April 20. The meeting began with a dinner held prior to the start of presentations and discussions.

Although overall the Stoughton Co-op reported that their 2016 year was down from that of 2017, it was still a very successful year for the Stoughton Co-op.

“I’m very proud to be standing up here,” Deric Reaney, General Manager, stated. “No one was immune to the struggles of the area, but we’ve weathered the storm thanks to the hard work and dedication of the staff.”

Reaney explained that the food store has been struggling due to ease of shopping at box stores when people travel to the city; but, that they have been able to obtain a liquor licence and have been selling liquor since March 6 of this year. They hope that with the added product that the down turn at the food store will stabilize. Décor and upgrades in the liquor section are being planned.

The service centre saw propane sales down, while dollars earned on petroleum were down it was due to the price of gas as consumption of petroleum was still quite high. Improvement to lighting is being planned for the service centre, while paving was supposed to take place at the card lock last fall; but, due to weather will now occur this spring.

Continued operation of the fuel truck will be seen, currently as part of a cooperation of Co-ops working together in this field.

The Benson Card Lock will have its annual BBQ this spring, applications for cards will be available there. Additionally there has been requests for dyed diesel at this location, which management is looking into.

Finally, the C-Store in Stoughton is looking at a possible expansion and while the card lock lot is being paved, they are planning on paving the C-Store parking lot as well.

According to President of the Stoughton Coop’s report, Ed Young, there were 87 new members to join the cooperative this year. Community is also very important to them, so a total of $8,000

was donated to charities throughout 2016. This includes a donation to Stoughton’s Royal Canadian Legion’s Roof Fundraiser.

Service Awards were also given out to staff including five year recognition to Tyson Wright and Chrissy McMaster; a 20-year service award to Leanne Brown; and a 30-year service award to Reaney. Two service awards were given to board members including a 15-year award to Gerald Knibbs and an 18-year award to Ed Young.

Training Awards were also given out including Excellence in Food Handling to Susan Russell; Multi-Generational Workplace and Leadership Secrets to Reaney; Increasing Personal Effectiveness to Sandra Fortune; Influencing Guest Service and Multi-Generational Workplace to Renea Folk; and Manager It’s More Than a Title and Food Manager One on One Training to Rod Folk.

Re-elected to the board were Darwin Fenn and Elwyn Helmuth. They rejoin President Ed Young (term until 2019), Vice President Tom Breault (term until 2018), Secretary Zandra Slater (term until 2018), and Gerald Knibbs (term until 2019).

TENDER

ROAD CONSTRUCTION - CLAY CAP Sealed tenders will be received at the office of the R.M. of Moose Mountain No. 63, in Carlyle, Saskatchewan until 4:00 p.m. C.S.T. on May 10th, 2017.

Tenders will be opened at 5:00 p.m. C.S.T., May 11th, 2017.

Tender is for the clay cap of 6.4 kms of Main Farm Access Road on Township Road 070, (South of Sections 04, 05, 06-07-01-W2 & South of 01-07-02-W2).

Preference will be given to contractors who have a head office within a 250 km radius of Carlyle, Saskatchewan.

Council passed two bylaws. The first bylaw No. 2017-02 authorizes the Town of Carlyle to enter into an agreement for the establishment of a Mutual Aid area and the second No. 2017-05 enters the Town of Carlyle into an Inter-Municipal Fire Protection Agreement. Safety and security of the town and surrounding communities/R.M.’s are important in ensuring a strong southeast.

Big Bike will tour Carlyle at 3:45 and a BBQ will be held in the wide pathway just south of the Civic Centre.

The Carlyle Town Council are nearly in agreement on setting a mill rate as well as mill rate factors for both residential and commercial properties.

Councillors are putting a lot of thought and consideration into the decision to ensure it is the best for the community overall.

The meeting was also the last one for Huguette Lutz as town administrator. She is retiring, but has offered to assist if needed moving forward. The Town would like to thank her for her years of service.

“We don’t mind acknowledging the local bylaw, but golf cart owners must be aware that in case of insurance and liability, provincial statutes override the municipal bylaw.”

“If we receive complaints of people abusing this bylaw, we will be obligated to enforce the provincial statutes,” adds Simons.

“Regarding safety, I would also like to remind members of the community that a valid driver’s licence is required to legally operate a golf cart. In addition, golf carts are designed to carry two people – and there should never be a child in a cart on someone’s lap.”

911 calls This week’s 911 calls were all of a non-emergency nature.

Alarm(s) One alarm within the detachment area originated from a business and was found to be a non-emergency.

Several false alarms

occurred at businesses in Carlyle and Redvers during this period.

Animal call(s) A caller reported a steer missing in the Redvers area.

Alcohol-related offence(s) An individual received a 21-day driving suspension and also had their vehicle seized for seven days for consuming alcohol while in a motor vehicle, as this was not their first offence.

On Hwy 13 near Manor, a motorist was fined $580 for not having vehicle insurance as well as for having open liquor in a vehicle. This individual was also issued an inspection notice regarding damage to their vehicle which needed repairing.

An individual was fined $360 for having open liquor in a vehicle.

Assault Members investigated the report of an assault in Arcola. No charges were laid at this time.

BB gun A youth with a BB gun in Carlyle was dealt with appropriately by members.

Breach of release conditions Two individuals breached their release conditions. Both were charged.

Break and enter RCMP members are investigating the theft of firearms in a rural area within the detachment area.

Child welfare Carlyle RCMP dealt with one file under the Child Welfare Act. Criminal harassment Members are investigating an incidence of criminal harassment in the Redvers area.

Drug investigation In the Carlyle area, an individual was charged with drug possession. This person also received a 72-hour driving suspension for driving under the influence.

Police are currently conducting an investigation within the detachment area regarding illegal drugs.

False pretences RCMP are currently investigating a case involving false pretences in the Manor area.

Fraud Members are currently investigating the fraudulent use of a credit card in the Wawota area.

Hit and run RCMP responded to a hit and run in Redvers.

Mischief A vehicle was smashed in the Arcola area. Police are investigating.

A disturbance at a business in Carlyle was dealt with by police. No charges were laid.

RCMP received a report of an individual who - while leaving a home in the Carlyle area - sprayed the residence with rocks.

Young people in Manor were spoken to

by RCMP after knocking on doors of homes and running away.

Gordon F. Kells High School Cougar Corner The SLT will be hosting a tropical-themed dance on Friday, April 28th. Doors open at 7:30. The dance goes until midnight. Students from other schools must be on the guest list to attend. (GFK students can place guests on the list any time prior to Friday at 3:30.)

Four members of our Student Leadership Team are fundraising to go to the National Student Leadership Conference in Waterloo, Ontario, this fall. They will be hosting a Paint Night on Monday, May 1st in the art room. The first session at 4:00 will be for youth, while the second session at 6:30 is for adults. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased in advance from Brittany Smoliak, Makenna Morrison, Gracie Schutz, or Sydney Flynn. They will also be hosting a Community BBQ on GFK’s front lawn on Friday, May 5th from noon until 1 pm. Hamburgers, hotdogs, cookies, and drinks will be for sale and all proceeds will go to their trip to Waterloo.

Committee members for 2017 are: Garry Dickson (Chair), John White (Vice Chair), Shirley Corkish (Secretary-Treasurer), Pat Clements, Cecile Cudmore, Bernie Williamson, Andrea Smith and Pauline White. Bob Birnie has submitted his resignation and a thank you expressed for his 9 years of service on the museum committee. There are still two vacancies on the museum committee and these need to be filled to form an effective committee to keep the museum open. To show my thanks

By Linda Wegner Seize the day! Take the opportunity before it’s too late! Never get too old to try something new!

All great slogans, if you decide to follow their advice. This week I did.

The story began about a year ago when one of my daughters-in-law gave me a beautiful long purple dress she’d been given. With the exception of a few minor tucks here and there it fit perfectly.

I excitedly took it home and hung it in my closet.

Nearly a year later the first opportunity to wear it presented itself. I called a skilled seamstress in town to make the necessary alterations and while she deftly pinned the location of new seams, her eyes lit up. “Just wait,” she said and scooted across the room to a stash of fabrics. Within a few minutes she’d visualized and laid out an original pattern for an over-jacket that upped the dress to near-celebrity status. I wore it to the event, received a number of compliments, and then put the outfit back in my closet, wondering when it would be worn again.

Fast forward to last month and a request from that skilled dressmaker: Would I appear in a local fashion show to display her handiwork? Me? A fashion show? That’s when seize the day, take the opportunity and do it now became relevant. Last evening, amid hearty applause and a number of loud whistles, I knew my fear-ridden trip down the ramp was a success. All this to say that while I did it to demonstrate my thanks to Guadalupe, it turned out to be a lot of fun as well as a thought-provoker.

How much more should our lives display our thanks to God for His great love. “…that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.” Ephesians 1:12

Cutting out sugar

It was kind of by accident, but at the end of September last year I cut out soda from my diet. It was kind of my sipping drink if I was out visiting anyone. My mom sent me this challenge thing where for one month you cut out pop, you don’t eat after 8 p.m., and you did push-ups and squats in the morning. I accepted the challenge and Kelly Running for that entire month I looked at Observer Staff the Vanilla Coke in my fridge, there’s still four sitting there if anyone wants them, but I was tempted to have a sip. Instead I’d grab a glass of water avoiding it, adding lemon to it for a little flavour. I had been drinking soda twice a week, so it was pretty much a staple in my diet and cutting it out completely was tough. Your body comes to crave the sugar and caffeine in the drink.

After that one month was up, I decided I would treat myself with a Coke. To my surprise it tasted terrible.

It was overly sweet and although I drank it all, came away with a headache. During this time I had also been reading about how bad sugar is for you, so had decided to avoid chocolates and sweets as well. Which meant this liquid sugar hit me pretty hard. At Christmastime I had a few cookies and that because mom made them special, but I couldn’t eat many because they were actually sickenly sweet.

The other day I had been invited out for dinner and they had dessert. I had some, asking for a very tiny amount, as I didn’t want to be rude; but, it went straight to my head. I had a sugar rush quickly followed by a headache.

On the positive side, fruit has never tasted so good, because it is naturally sweet and not overwhelmingly so like desserts and sweets are to me now.

Treats to me now includes fruit, naturally flavoured carbonated water, and old fashioned plain doughnuts.

Very little added sugar, only 7 grams in the old fashioned plain doughnut versus something like 23 grams in a honey cruller.

Reading about sugar I discovered it’s literally empty calories and is bad for your teeth, it’s bad for your liver in large quantities, it can cause insulin resistance and is a stepping stone towards diabetes, it actually has “fat-promoting” effects because calories from sugar aren’t fulfilling you might increase your intake of calories in a day, it’s quite addicting – which is why for that entire month I thought about soda a lot, and according to new studies it affects cholesterol and contributes to heart disease.

I’m not a health nut, but I just figured if I got rid of soda then it was logical to cut out all sugar because I didn’t eat a whole lot of it anyways. When it came to salty or sweet things, I was always more of a fan of the salty, which in large quantities isn’t the best for you either; so, I’ve at least kicked one of these two things to the curb, and I’ve been trying to kind of watch my intake of the other. However, some salt isn’t bad because your body actually uses it to absorb water; it’s one of those electrolytes that sports drinks have in them.

People always say, everything in moderation, and I think that’s really what being healthy comes down to.

Don’t make yourself unhappy to be healthy because you like certain foods; but, just be aware that certain foods aren’t the best for you and maybe look at limiting your intake.

I have noticed that by cutting out sugars, I have lost weight, and that is without making any other real changes to my lifestyle. I’ll still go eat a burger and fries (everything in moderation), but instead of having a soda to wash it down with I’ll ask for water, white milk (which does have some sugar in the form of lactose), or the other day at Taco Time there was an option of non-sweetened iced tea – just to have a little flavour.

Never... it’s not going to happen... not a chance I will never be mistaken for a gardener. I try to show an appropriate amount of enthusiasm for the different varieties of flowers for my husband’s sake but I will never be a gardener.

I will never be a proficient enough pianist to enter a Bach Competition. I could begin working on any of his 1100 compositions and know that I would Shelley Luedtke never fully master it or be on the leader board in any competition.

I will never be a contestant on Jeopardy. I have won thousands of imaginary dollars over the years sitting in my living room but even though Canadians can now be selected for the show, I will never be one of them.

The word never implies our belief that something most certainly will not take place--under any circumstances--ever. It is definitive. Absolute. Final.

It’s such a strong sentiment we are often warned to never say never because we simply don’t know what circumstances could come upon as that could change everything.

There are some things we might agree we’d like to keep permanently in the never category. To never again hear the word cancer. To never again see images of a war zone as civilians run to take cover.

To never be accused of something hurtful. To never harbor hatred. To never feel pain.

Perhaps these realities will always be with us, but some of our ‘nevers’ don’t have to be---at least not in as definitive a way as we think. Maybe…just maybe…we are saying never to something when in fact we are actually unwittingly part of making it happen.

When I lived in Alberta my family attended a church about 10 minutes outside of Camrose.

church, yet she helped make other solos happen.

Her ‘never’ turned into “I’ll find a way.”

I won’t be a great gardener but I can enjoy the work of other gardeners. I can be inspired by the beauty and encouraging of those who love what they do. I don’t have to be a great gardener myself to contribute to the world of gardening.

I will never win that Bach competition but I can put in the work and learn what I can for my own musical enhancement and sense of accomplishment. I can develop a deeper appreciation for what great composers wrote by keeping their music in my life.

I will never be on stage for the final Jeopardy question but I can learn and deepen my knowledge of things that interest me, and explore topics that are new to me.

If we assume there are things we can never do, we may not make the attempt. That is a loss. If there are things we won’t start because we fear we won’t complete them, we are losing out. To say never to ourselves simply by being unwilling to try will rob us of good things. We may be tempted to say ‘I can’t’, or ‘there’s just no way’ because we believe we know what the outcome will be. And perhaps we would be right. But oh, how sad if we don’t step out and see… to just take a peek at what might happen.

Because if there weren’t people to enjoy flower gardens--the beauty would be left unappreciated. If there weren’t people to listen to the works of great composers--they would simply be notes on the page.

If there weren’t general knowledge enthusiasts wanting to to play along at home--there wouldn’t be a show to tune into each day.

It’s true, there are many things that we may rightly assume we will never do. But imagine being able to move items from the never column into the possible column; not on our own but with others who are pulling in that direction as well. Every time someone does something we don’t think we can do, we take away the power of never. Just think what that means we could possibly do tomorrow.

Older than dirt

With spring fever raging in my veins and Mother Nature cooperating in the weather department I moved beyond just staring out of my dirty windows wishing away the last snow banks and decided that it was finally time to hang laundry out on the line. There is nothing that smells better than sheets Jocelyn Hainsworth and pillow cases that smell like fresh air.

That’s how it all started. Bright and early one morning I took my basket of washing to hang out on the line and then took to meandering around the yard because the sunshine was warm, and who wanted to vacuum anyway?

My next favourite thing to do in the spring is to go and poke around in my flower beds to see if anything is coming up yet. Besides quack grass, that is; quack grass is always coming up.

I had an hour or so to play in the dirt so I grabbed a digging fork and started turning over the soil and weeding out the unwanteds. One such unwanted was the plastic border that was supposed to be keeping the grass out and had proved itself useless at the job for years. Sometime before the snow fell last fall I had begun ripping it out and now it lay across the lawn asking me “So now what are going to do?” It was either reinstall it, or grab it and keep pulling. I chose the latter.

Time flew by. Demolition can be so fulfilling. You

go into it knowing that you’re going to end up with a big mess but that it will lead to something new. You don’t let yourself think about the work involved: it’s really best that way.

I worked my way around the circumference of the garden and eventually came to a small pile of rocks left there last summer by some (un-named) crazy lady who thought the answer to this garden border quandary was to dig a trench all the way around, lay geo-teck along it so as to confuse the quack grass with something new, and then fit about 1000 multi shaped rocks into it like a gigantic jig saw puzzle I would make up as I went along.

“Easy peasey” you say? Of course you say that – you’re not the crazy lady who did all the work.

The first day, while my sheets dried on the line, the work was mostly digging – done in a standing position and using the standard muscles a person tends to use on a regular basis. It ended off with placing the few rocks already there – just enough to show the potential for how this was absolutely the right thing to be doing. It was approximately 10 feet out of 140, but I was energized with a taste of success.

And I slept well in those fresh aired sheets.

Day two dawned cool and cloudy but I had momentum on my side. Not only that, there was a whole rock pile behind the trees - suitable material at my favourite price from a time when the Farmer was going through his rock splitting phase. It was a mere 100 meter trek, round trip. Wheel barrow full by wheel barrow full I picked, loaded, transported and dumped rocks at my project site. I got another

14 feet done that day and I slept really well that night – it was getting out of bed the next morning that was challenging.

The days went on and the stones got scarce so I moved on to another pile even farther away. Braving ticks and burrs and smashed fingernails I would climb the pile and sort through – my building blocks had to be flat on one surface, about 4 inches thick, the bigger the better up to where they were too heavy for me to move them. Also, I was looking for unique colours and textures – if I was going to do this, I was going to make it interesting.

By day four my body was getting down right balky about moving but I was more than half way – there was no quitting now. My trips to the rock pile did slow up a bit and I found myself sitting down more often, and being philosophical about my place in the space/time continuum. At one point I found a particularly superb rock and was sure that it had been waiting decades in that pile for me to come and place it in my garden – because, you know, in the 4.5 billion years of its existence the blink of time it’s going to be in my garden will matter. I think maybe I was a little dizzy from pushing the wheel barrow. I can’t even remember which one it was now, but they’re all 4.5 billion years old and all just tickled to be chosen for my garden, of this I am sure.

The last day was done in slow motion – the only speed I had left – but I am done. In every sense of the word I. am. done. And I feel that the space/ time continuum has caught up with me ... I am now 4.5 billion years old too.

It was so nice out. Did spring come and go already? I just got in the house (on Monday morning), and there is a thick layer of snow blanketing our nice greenish grass. I suppose it is still April, but I was really hoping this little spring temper tantrum of a storm would skip us over.

Oh well! It is bound to warm up again before Christmas this year, so that is something to look for-

ward to.

We had an eventful weekend that just passed. My parents had a few replacement heifers they were willing to part with, just so calving next spring isn’t completely outnumbered by first time calvers. A few weeks ago, on the long weekend, our new dozen cows my husband and I bought, plus the 21 replacement heifers decided to unchain the gate and go for a stroll out with the herd sires in the pasture.

Thankfully, the bulls were uninterested in this development, so it was fairly easy to chase them all back in; we then proceed to load the thirty some odd cows and new baby calves, and haul them to our place for the rest of the spring. When doing so, my dad picked out the three heifers he planned to sell. Well, I suppose they chose themselves; meaning the ones who were a bit squirrelly got the cut.

The had no problems clearing a five-foot panel when pursued, so it made perfect sense to get rid of them. Fast forward to last weekend; we had planned to take those heifers up to the auction mart near the town my husband grew up at. After unloading them, we would head to his parents place and have an Easter/birthday supper together. (Since my husband turned the big 3-0 last weekend!)

First thing Sunday morning, we headed over to my parents place with the stock trailer and I backed into the makeshift chute system we had loaded out from the week previous. Once everything was chained together and secure, my husband went into the pen and pushed the three calves towards the loading chute.

I am pretty sure that is when everything went up in smoke. The three calves came careening out of the shed, heads way up, snorting and just plain losing their marbles. We didn’t push them, heck we hardly took a step and they lost their fool minds. They slammed into the chute and spun around and took off back out of it before my husband could even catch up to them. After that attempt, my dad came down and held the trailer door while I went in to help.

From there, things went south. Well, north really, if you want to be directionally accurate. The crazy

heifers rounded the corner from the pen into the chute and proceeded to crash into the panels holding the alley together, knocking two of them almost over.

Two of the animals escaped while the third ran back into the pen, just vibrating with adrenaline.

From there, I phoned my brother and he offered to round them back up with his quad and we set things up to round them back into the pen. Of course, that absolutely didn’t work. After 45 minutes of around and around the field, the silly animals jumped through our fence and headed north. From there, they crossed about three and a half miles of neighbor’s fences and had fully lost their minds and their respect for humans, not to mention had split up and headed in two different directions.

Finally, my brother some how managed to get a rope on one and from there, she proceeded to beat up my brother, almost wipe my dad out twice, ram the quad with her head and dent in the side of my dad’s

truck. Thankfully, my husband and soon to be sisterin-law with the truck and trailer came into the field and we some how managed to get her chased into the stock trailer. We proceeded back to my parents place and spent 45 minutes trying to load the lone calf in the pen and she was equally as mean.

Five grown adults spontaneously grew feathers from there. We were just too scared to get close to her because she had every intention of killing you if she caught you. I have NEVER been that scared of a cow, let along a yearling, but I am beyond thrilled that she finally hopped onto the trailer and they are both someone else’s problem now.

I am sure you have noticed my math was a bit off, but if you are looking for a fairly athletic calf with some anger management issues, boy do I have a heifer in mind for sale. I can’t give you the exact location for a look-see just yet, but when we find her and get her back home, trust me, she’s for sale!

Leafs show promise while Jays falter

By Bruce Penton Emotions of sports fans who live and die with professional teams from Toronto were like a teeter-totter in April.

Teetering up…the forever sadsack Maple Leafs were energized, giving Presidents Cupwinning Washington Capitals everything they could handle and showing signs that if not this year, then they would certainly be legitimate Stanley Cup contenders next year or the year after.

Teetering down…

Canada’s team, the Blue Jays, had their worst April in team history, sagging to the bottom

of the American League East and not only staying there, but posting the worst record in all of Major League Baseball.

After 16 games, the Jays were 4-12 for a winning percentage of .250. By April 23, the Jays were seven games behind division-leading Baltimore.

It didn’t help that stopper Roberto Osuna started the season on the disabled list. It didn’t help that Edwin Encarnacion signed as a free agent with Cleveland in the offseason, reducing the protection his big bat used to provide other hitters in the lineup. It didn’t help that 36-year-old Jose Bautista was off to the worst start of his career, batting .130 after 16 games and whiffing about 40 per cent of the time. It didn’t help that 2015 American League Most Valuable Player Josh Donaldson went on the disabled list with

a recurrence of a calf injury. It didn’t help that pitchers Aaron Sanchez (15 wins last year) and J.A. Happ, a 20-game winner in 2016, missed starts due to ailments.

Happ and Sanchez are key pieces in the Jays’ starting rotation. In preseason, the Jays’ staff was the envy of most MLB teams. Happ, Sanchez, Marco Estrada, Marcus Stroman and Francisco Liriano is, on paper, about as solid as any team’s. In fact, Stroman was coming off a sensational World Baseball Championship series where he led the U.S. to the title and was named tournament MVP. Then he comes back to regular season play and loses two of his first three games with a 4.05 ERA. It’s almost guaranteed the Blue Jays will pick up the pace. They will not continue to play at a one-win-in-four pace. But falling eight to

10 games under .500 in April means they have to play close to .600 ball the rest of the season to have a hope to make the playoffs.

It may be a bad year for the Jays, but at least Toronto fans’ fortunes are being buoyed by the encouraging play of the Leafs.

Sexual assault A sexual assault is currently under investigaton by Carlyle RCMP. Theft A vehicle stolen from the Kisbey area was recovered.

An individual is facing charges for shoplifting at a Kenosee Lake business.

RCMP are investigating a theft at Kenosee Lake.

Upon investigation by RCMP, the report of a stolen vehicle in the Kisbey area was deemed to be unfounded Traffic offences Two non-injury collisions occurred this week.

A motorist was charged with crossing solid lines on Hwy 13 between Arcola and Carlyle.This driver did so while passing a school bus.

“Fortunately, the bus didn’t have any kids in it at the time,” says Staff Sgt. Simons. “However, the solid line is there for a reason and anyone passing on a solid line is not only putting themselves at risk, but also other members of the public. Please slow down and obey the rules of the road - so everyone can get to their destinations safely.”

In two separate incidents - one in Arcola and one in Carlyle - two individuals were charged with driving while suspended. Both will appear in court.

Members dealt with six cases of drivers operating vehicles without proper insurance. The fine for this offence is $580.

An individual received a warning for stunting.

Members issued several speeding tickets during this period as well as fines and/or warnings for not wearing seatbelts.

An individual received a warning from RCMP for having a red light in the front of their vehicle. This is against the law.

Members stopped a vehicle which had the wrong licence plates attached it it.

RCMP members issued several fines and warnings this week regarding vehicle repairs. “It’s the time of year where people are taking their trailers out on the road,” sats Staff Sgt. Simons. “In one case, we had a trailer where the lights weren’t working. We also had cases where licence plates on vehicles weren’t attached properly or otherwise unreadable.

Whether you’re hauling a trailer or whether it’s your everyday vehicle, we ask that people check to ensure their vehicles are in good repair and especially, that their vehicle’s headlights and tail lights are working.”

Uttering threats RCMP are currently investigating a case of uttering threats within the detachment area.

Laughter abounds as Wawota Acting Company takes the stage for a cause Kelly Running Observer Staff

For the past 11 years the Wawota Acting Company has hosted an evening of entertainment to fundraise in support of World Vision. This year they held their production on Sunday, April 23, and they were able to raise $2,073 for World Vision. Soon they will determine which gifts from the World Vision catalogue they will support with the funds raised. Last year they bought animals, agriculture support, healthcare, education, and food in a variety of ways.

The production opened with a short skit “Go Riders!” in which two Blue Bombers fans were sitting in the stands amongst a throng of Rider green. As fans cheered, annoyed each other, and supported their teams, laughter filled the Wawota Town Hall. Performing in the piece were all of the Wawota Acting Company members: Brynn Appell, Kelton Ford, Sierra Murray, Madison Wilson, Hannah Pilloud, Briana DeRoo, Makaila Mansfield, Kye-lynn VanMeer, Hannah Kormos, Reed VanDresar, Arielle Hientz, Taylene Bourgon, Skylar DeRoo, Lisa Morrissette, Lauren Wilson, Taylor Pilloud, Parker Weatherald, Marissa Charles, and Faith Heinrichs.

The next short play, “What Happened to Peace and Goodwill?” involved Brynn Appell, Kelton Ford, Hannah Pilloud, Sierra Murray, Madison Wilson, and Briana DeRoo. Appell and Pilloud play clerks at a check-out in a busy store, while Ford’s character, Henry, is attempting to make purchases. The clerks are going mighty slow to as not injure themselves and when requesting a price check on an item they are blown away that Henry wants them to ask a second time for the check because it was taking awhile. Henry finally decides that he doesn’t want to buy any of the gifts and will just give money because it’s easier.

The audience was then drawn to the other side of the stage where Sierra Murray was fielding complaints as a clerk at the Customer Complaint desk.

Two ladies, Millie (Madison Wilson) and Sarah (Briana DeRoo), come to make a complaint about each other, since it’s the “Customer Complaint” desk. It turns out the two women had fought over a dress, ripping it in two, and were upset with the turn out. As they attempt to get things sorted another sale is announced over the loud speaker and off they go to find a deal.

Very receptive of this piece the crowd chuckled and clapped throughout the performance.

Next up was a performance of “Three Right Smart Gals.” Makaila Mansfield played Clara, Kyelynn VanMeer played Phoebe, and Hannah Kormos played Maggie.

From Page 11 - Wawota Acting Company The three sisters live in a rural area, off the beaten path, where GPS and cell phones don’t work. Not wanting to give up perfectly good lumber, they need to fix their roof after all, the ladies keep stealing a wooden sign designating the two mile marker for the turnpike. Thus, people from the city – typically searching for antiques – continually get lost and end up in their yard.

This time Francis (Reed VanDresar), Harris (Kelton Ford), Carter (Sierra Murray), and Peggy (Arielle Hientz) arrive looking for the turnpike; purchasing a map from the women the visitors then realize that the rocking chair the cat is sitting on is worth a lot, so deciding to try and get it for a steal of a deal they ask about purchasing the cat, comically buying it for $24 after Clara quickly acts as an auctioneer having their visitors bid against each other in the heat of the moment.

After purchasing the cat for more than they originally offered, the four visitors then offer to buy the chair for a dollar. The sisters laugh at them and refuse to sell it… after all it’s their lucky chair; every visitor to their farm has purchased a cat off of the chair for at least $20. The sisters place another cat on the chair, explaining that the one they just sold the four visitors was their third one that day.

The comical scene had those in the audience in stitches. Laughing at the seemingly “simple,” yet ingenious way the sisters took advantage of the visiting city slickers who thought they were duping the sisters.

The final production of the even-

ing was a performance of “Way Way Down East.” This play saw a family Hepzibah Ludlow (Skylar DeRoo), Ezekiel Ludlow (Lisa Morrissette), and Lily Ludlaw (Lauren Wilson) fallen on hard times along with Henrietta (Taylor Pilloud), about to have their farm foreclosed on by Tedious J. Impossible (Marissa Charles). Although Impossible comes across as a decent person while interacting with the Ludlow’s he really has an evil plan of foreclosing and then selling the south pasture to Bertram Moneybags (Parker Weatherald).

Attempting to help save the family is Ronald Fitzwilliam (Reed VanDresar) who is courting Lily. His plan is to sell an invention to Moneybags and use that money to save the Ludlow’s farm.

Lily is out picking berries, however, when Impossible and his cohort, William P. McNasty (Faith Heinrichs), are out walking the south pasture and Impossible reveals to McNasty what his plan is. Lily comes out of hiding and exclaims that she will tell her family, but McNasty and Impossible tie her to the railroad tracks in hopes of getting rid of her. Thankfully Fitzwilliam comes across the tracks to find his beloved in danger.

He rescues her and together they foil Impossible’s nefarious plan.

Narrating is Taylene Bourgon who encouraged the audience to cheer for the heroes and boo at the villains throughout.

Overall the evening was thoroughly enjoyed by those in attendance and the productions were praised by many.

Leanne Porter, Lucas and Walker travelled to Lethbridge to celebrate Easter with Mitch Porter `Donna Schaffer and Ken Mayer of Regina Beach, Jenna Mayer and Shilo Newman of Regina visited with Joe and Jean Brisbois last week.

They also visited with Donna’s Aunt Shirley Campbell who is a patient in Moosomin Hospital.

Colleen Form, Ashten and Jesse from Paradise Hill, Sk. spent a few days in Wawota last week. They visited with Trevor and Christa Pryce and family and helped Norman Myers celebrate his 70th birthday with a family supper.

Congratulations to Kristen Lamontagne and Nathan Day of Estevan on the birth of

their son on Apr. 17. He weighed 9 lbs 8 oz. and has been named Kasen Robert Michael.

Tom and Cher Badger have returned home after spending a couple of months at their winter home in New Braunfels, Texas Bud and Bev King were home for the Easter weekend. Bud has one more week of rehab at Wascana.

Eric Corkish of Regina spent the weekend with his Grandma Shirley and helped with some yard work and readied the lily pond for the gold fish.

Word has been received of the passing of Peter Allan late of Watrous, SK. He was 74 years old. He and his wife Cheryl and family of Colin, Kara and Brooke lived here from 1975-1982. Peter

was the principal and popular teacher of Wawota Parkland High during these years.

The Twin-Valley Presbytery of the United Church held their annual meeting in Wawota last Friday.

It was also the day that Roy Bortolotto was ordained as a Designated Lay Minister of the United Church.

A special song that Roy had composed for the occasion was, “A Time to Celebrate”. A Time to Celebrate, indeed.

So many books, so little time. One of my favourite books is “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austin. I have read it several times and a few years ago read, “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” by Seth Grahame-Smith. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

Just recently I read,

“Eligible” by Curtis Sittenfeld, which is a modern re-telling of “Pride and Prejudice” and quite enjoyed it, too. I guess a great story line never gets old.

Positivity Camp Jackson Brady says of Cornerstone Family and Youth’s Positivity Day Camp: “It’s fun!”

The day-long event was held Thursday, April 20 at the Carlyle Elementary School gym and welcomed campers from kindergarten to grade 6.

Cornerstone Family and Youth Positivity Day Camp participants are pictured hard at work creating their “You Are My Sunshine” paintings. The CFY’s Jenn Sedor says: “We’re all about growth at CFY. It’s exciting to see Shayna grow as a leader and it’s equally exciting to offer something different for the kids. It’s not directly arts-orientated and it’s not only sports. It’s something new and unique that we can offer youth in our community.”

Alida

Submitted by Edel Cowan Word was received that Alice GemmellSmart had passed away April 14, at the Golden West Centennial Lodge in Winnipeg.

The Smarts lived in Alida from 1950-1956 before they moved to Souris. MB. Alice was predeceased by her 1st husband Allan Smart, second husband John Gemmell, parents Wilfred and Velida Reil, 5 brothers and 4 sisters (one being Yolande Potapinski). Sincere sympathy is extended to Ken, Diane Potapinski, as well as to his sisters, Agatha, Loretta, and Michelle, his brother Willie and their families on the death of Aunt Alice. Condolences are extended to all other family members as well.

Ernest and Dianne Lemieux left for Lloydminster April 12 to spend Easter week with son Michael, Lynsey and family. They also helped grandson Carter (who would be 5 on April 19) celebrate an early birthday before returning home on Monday, April 17. They were fortunate to arrive in Lloydminster the day before the snowstorm which dumped almost 12 inches of snow.

Gail McLachlin spent Easter in Calgary visiting with her daughter Grace, Luck Mckenna and granddaughter Thea. She also visited with son Mitch Cowie and Andrea Gohm.

Joe Harvey hosted Easter for his daughter Tania Raiwet and grandchildren Ashley, Jace and Kade (all from Weyburn).

Dave Ince were excited to hear that grandson Bennett Paul Bradshaw arrived save and sound on April 15. He is the son of Steven and Brandi Bradshaw of Calgary and Nora is his big sister. Gloria is spending a few days with the family and getting acquainted with the new baby.

Murray Cowan, Estevan spent a few days (April 19-20) visiting at the farm with his parents Gray and Edel, and also visited with his brother Tim, Shelly and Ainsley. He also renewed acquaintances with John Cowan, who had just arrived at the Cowan farm for a spring holiday.

John Cowan, Hillcrest Mines, AB arrived at the Cowan farm April 19 to spend a few days visiting with Gray, Edel, Tim, Shelly and Ainsley.

He was hoping to get to help with some seeding before returning back home – but not to be this time around, way too wet out there yet.

Act One Productions held their wind-up meeting on April 20 where it was decided that they would donate $15,000.00 of the proceeds from this year’s 25th production to the Alida Rec. Board for their loan payment. A new reading committee was also formed and they will be reading up on plays during the summer months in hopes of finding a couple of choices for the next season in March 2018.

So sorry we missed the Wauchope Brunch on April 23 – no good excuse just plan forgot about it until it was too late. I know that we missed a great feast as they always do an excellent job. Next time folks – I’ll put it on the calendar in big red letters.

Oh boy – hope you folks were able to miss this flu bug that seems to be going around. It hit our house and it’s not fun – it may only last about 24 hours (thank goodness) but it sure knocks you down.

Gee Whiz – that’s all I needed to wake up to Monday morning – ground covered in snow – oh well can’t do anything about it except accept it, like it or not. One thing though it should brighten and clean things up when it melts away, but first comes the muck, I know. Glad that I did do some yard work last week, noticed that some of the perennials are peeking through the ground. There was a nice bright yellow pansy blooming out by the back step (seeded itself last fall) – what a nice cheerful greeting to see. Also noticed lots of pussywillows, they are really out in full force.

9 CANADA: NATURAL SOURCE OF PRIDE SINCE 1867

Politician, Inuit rights activist and broadcaster Rosemarie Kuptana is an advocate for Inuit rights and has played an instrumental role in developing initiatives that protect and advance northern indigenous nations. She’s held various roles in both the media and not-for-profit organizations, always with an eye towards what might best serve the Canadian Inuit.

Kuptana grew up in Sachs Harbour, a hamlet in the Northwest Territories, where she learned the traditional role of Inuit women and spoke only Inuvialuit, the traditional language of the region. But at the age of seven, she was forcibly removed from her community and made to attend a residential school where speaking her language was a punishable offense. While this experience left its mark, it didn’t stop her from pursuing her vocation.

In 1979, Kuptana took a position as a radio broadcaster with CBC Northern Services, before moving on to the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation, where she became first production coordinator and, eventually, president. In all three positions, she ensured that broadcasts were delivered in Inuvialuit language and developed programming that would make a difference to Inuit communities. One of her Rosemarie Kuptana at the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on legacies is a children’s educational television program broadcast in Climate Change, The Hague, Netherlands, Inuvialuit.

Kuptana’s roles in broadcasting laid the foundation for her involvement with Inuit causes by exposing her to a wide spectrum of relevant issues, including those pertaining to culture, land claims, social issues and education. She was therefore well prepared when, in 1986, she was elected to a three-year term as vice-president of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference, an organization that addresses the common concerns of Inuit peoples worldwide.

In 1991, Kuptana became president of another organization: the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada (ITC), now called Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami. With the ITC she worked on negotiating with governments to secure the right for Aboriginal people to self-govern. Another important mission was obtaining acknowledgement of human rights abuses in the relocation of Inuit to the high Arctic during the 1950s. Kuptana also assisted in the settlement of Inuit land claims and has developed numerous programs for Inuit youth. In 1995, Kuptana returned to the Inuit Circumpolar Conference, this time elected as president. During her term she helped establish the Arctic Council and was involved with various environmental initiatives aimed at protecting Northern wildlife.

She also worked to secure compensation for Inuit who suffered at the hands of the residential school system.

Kuptana has received honorary degrees from Trent and York Universities as well as a number of awards, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. Currently, Rosemarie lives in Ottawa, where she continues her work fighting for human rights, developing youth programs and defending the North.

CANADA’S AMERICAN COMMUNITY Since the very beginning— American independence came about in 1776—our neighbours to the south have ventured past our shared border and come to settle on Canadian soil. At first, those who arrived were British Loyalists. Later, many were black Americans who came by way of the Underground Railroad or who fled during the War of 1812. But by the turn of the century, Americans that immigrated to Canada came in search of one thing: land. Prior to the First World War, approximately 750,000 Americans moved to the Prairie Provinces, where many acquired acreages and built farms.

In later decades, Americans came to Canada to work in sectors such as our booming oil industry and more recently, in the tech industry. Draft dodgers during the Vietnam War also commonly came to Canada. Of all immigrant groups that settle in Canada, Americans bring with them the largest amount of wealth—sometimes three times as much as other groups.

Perhaps because of the many similarities between the countries, American Canadians never formed as a self-conscious ethnic group. However, their influence is felt in every sector, and our general proximity to the U.S. has played a large role in shaping nearly every aspect of our cultural identity.

As of the 2011 census, 372,575 claimed full or partial American ancestry. Notable Canadians that trace their lineage back to the United States include filmmaker David Cronenberg; musician Neil Young; actor Keanu Reeves; Politician Bill White; journalist Patrick Lagacé; and poet George Elliott Clarke.

The one thing that can be said for the weather in our part of the world...we rarely have the opportunity to become bored with it.

Last week, I was joyfully listing off the various signs of spring that I had seen.

This week, I greeted Monday morning by looking out my window at a blanket of fresh snow...and one cranky-looking robin.

Well . . . (sigh) . . . I guess it COULD have been worse.

Let’s talk about something else.

One of the things that I was told when I started doing this; was that Sydney Duke (daughter of David and Kimberley Duke) had just come home from the fair in Brandon, MB with a ‘handful of ribbons’.

It took a few days for the two of us to get the chance to chat. But we finally connected and I found out that what I’d been told was absolutely true.

“I’ve been riding since I was four,” Sydney says.

“I started out riding ‘Western Style’. But I decided to move into ‘English Style’. It seemed to me that ‘English Style’ is more challenging and I like that!”

Although she’s been riding for some time, Sydney goes on to explain that: “I started training in Show Jumping about a year ago. And, I began working with my coach, Cassie Bolingbroke, (owner of Ace Equestrian Center in Qu’Appelle), in January of this year.”

Sydney tells me that she did compete as part of the Saskatchewan Team at the Summer Games held in Estevan last year. But, she says that: “The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair was the first real show that I’ve been in on my own. I was really happy with how it went. I did pretty well!”

She certainly did.

Sydney was the Reserve Champion in both the ‘Short/Long Hunter Stake’ and ‘.70 m Hunter’ categories; First Place in the ‘Evergreen Hunter Jumper’ and ‘Junior B Flat Hunter’ categories; Second Place in ‘Under Saddle Hunter’; Third Place in the ‘.70m Under Saddle Hunter’, ‘Short/Long Stirrup’ and ‘Hunter Challenge Team Straight Aces’.

She also earned 3 Fourth Place finishes in ‘Hunter’ and 2 Fifth Place finishes in ‘Short/Long Stirrup Hunter’ competitions.

Sydney notes that she will be competing in shows that will be organized through her coach this season. And, she says that she hopes to ìgo as far as I canî in Show Jumping.

If her performance in her “first real show” is any indication, we’ll be hearing more about Sydney again in the future.

On Saturday, April 22nd, a ‘Double Celebration’ (complete with two different cakes) was held at the Kennedy Friendship Center. About 30-35 people came together to congratulate Roy Bortolotto on his Recognition as a Designated Lay Minister in the United Church (at a ceremony held in Wawota on Friday, April 21st). Roy has been working towards this goal for the past six years.

At the same time, this celebration was a 90th Birthday Party for Barbara Wilkins good friend from Brockville, ON, Myra McWilliams. Myra came out for a visit, and to attend the ceremony in Wawota.

Students are back in school after the break last week. As well, the Softball season is set to begin for the Kennedy Langbank Girls Team. The girls are playing in the Borderline Softball League, and will play teams from: Carnduff, Oxbow, Lampman, Redvers and Carlyle. Given the number of teams, our girls will play two games per week (Mondays and Wednesdays) for the next few weeks. Several of those games will take place at the Ball Diamonds in Langbank...beginning with a game between Oxbow and Langbank on Monday, May 1st. (Games WERE set to begin this week...but will be rescheduled due to the weather.) So, anybody that would like to can come out watch some great softball and help cheer our girls on.

Big win for library funding but what does it mean for workers who were already laid off?

The Government of Saskatchewan has reversed the drastic funding cuts for public libraries, a move that is welcomed by the Canadians Union of Public Employees (CUPE).

However, there are still questions about what this means for the library workers who already received pink slips.

“Close to 15 library workers were laid off due to funding cuts.

Now that the funding is restored we hope the regional libraries will do the right thing and welcome these workers back to work,” said Tom Graham, president of CUPE Saskatchewan.

CUPE was one of the many organizations which joined the campaign to save libraries.

“This is a victory for the thousands of people across Saskatchewan who stood up for our libraries,” said Tom Graham, president of CUPE Saskatchewan. “We are glad that the provincial government recognized its mistakes, but there are a lot of mistakes in its budget that it still needs to account for.”

Fundraising events in May include a May 1 Paint Night at the High School and a May 5 Community BBQ on the school’s front lawn. Leadership Club member Makenna Morrison (pictured) says: “Both of these events are open to the entire community and we’d like to thank everyone for their support so far.
