Skating for the love of it at Wawota’s 4th Annual Fun Fest Kelly Running Observer Staff

The 4th Annual Wawota Winter FunFest was held on Sunday, Jan. 21, where young competitors attended to showcase their abilities from Wawota, Arcola, Carlyle, and Kennedy.

The day began with Individual Events for stage 4-6 skaters. Competing were Chesney Murray and Leighton Syslak in the Stage 4 category; which was followed by competitors Amara Lees, Ashlynn Ippolito, and Callie Weston of Arcola, Brynn Chapman of Carlyle, Emily Antonenko, Haley Debenham, and Sybil Brickley of Kennedy, as well as Gracie Rohatyn, Isabella Restau, and Willow Byrne of Wawota in the Stage 5 competition.

Stage 4 and 5 “Jump, Spin, Spiral” were then hosted before a short presentation was held before the youngest skaters came to the ice.

Stage 1 skaters registered included Adalee Westen and Jax Klebeck of Arcola as well as Kate Lobert, Jayda Carpenter, and Alexandra Jamieson of Wawota.

Hedy Pelletier of Wawota was the solo skater in the Stage 2 category.

A Scottish celebration at upcoming Robbie Burns Night Lynne Bell

“An Evening to Celebrate Robbie Burns” returns to Carlyle Saturday, Feb. 3, and organizer Tim Sedor says the event is steeped in history, sociability and all things Scottish.

This year’s Robbie Burns Night festivities will be the second Scottish-themed celebration in Carlyle. The event is a continuation of Alameda’s Robbie Burns Night. Organized by members of southeastern Saskatchewan’s ABBA 15 Masonic Lodge, the evening commemorates the life of Scottish poet and lyricist Robbie Burns (17591796), whose legacy is celebrated annually throughout the world on or near his January 25 birthday.

Robbie Burns Night celebrations follow a format which includes pipers, dancers, toasts to lads and lassies and the piping in of the iconic Scottish dish, haggis.

“It’s an event steeped in history,” says Tim, a member of the ABBA 15 Masonic Lodge and one of the evening’s organizers. “It’s good fun, there’s a lot of cultural and local history, great entertainment and of course, there’s a chance to try haggis and to enjoy a scotch-tasting.”

Tim stresses that although haggis-eating and scotch-tasting are important elements of he Scottish-themed celebration, they are strictly optional activities.

“They’re a big part of our Robbie Burns Night, but we’re serving a roast beef supper with all the trimmings that’s prepared by (Carlyle’s) David and Shelley Slykhuis, so the haggis isn’t the main course,” he says.

“It will be an excellent supper,” says Tim.

“And we get some pretty good bottles of scotch for the tasting. You can pay $5 to taste a scotch that costs $150, so it’s a chance to try something new for a pretty good price.”

“There will also be a cash bar, but there’s a lot more going on than just eating and drinking,” he adds. “There are presentations honouring Robbie Burns, some great music by The Katie Miller Band and later, we’ll open it up for a dance.”

“All ages are welcome and I’d say the atmosphere is similar to a wedding.”

Fellow organizer Jenn Sedor agrees, adding: “It’s a family event.

However, there won’t be activities just for kids.

There will be a cash bar and many toasts, so I’d keep that - and your child’s comfort level - in mind if you’re thinking of bringing them.”

Tim says that although many men wear kilts, “No one will kick you out if you wear a Tshirt and jeans.”

“We’re often asked about dress codes,” says Jenn. “The organizers will dress up and if people want to dress up, we encourage them to do so. And if a guy owns a kilt, it’s his night to put it on. But really, the intent is to celebrate Robbie Burns, to have fun and to welcome the next generation to the celebration.”

The Sedors were recently part of that “next generation.” Attending Alameda’s Robbie Burns Night inspired them and their friends, Natalie Miller and piper Regan Miller to bring the event to Carlyle for the first time last year.

“The first time I ever went to a Robbie Burns Night was in Alameda,” says Jenn. “My husband Tim and I were the youngest people in the room, along with our friends, Natalie and

Regan Miller. We had a great time. And eventually, the event was moved to Carlyle because we needed a bigger venue.”

“It’s the second year for Robbie Burns Night here in Carlyle,” says Tim. “People from the area come out to celebrate Robbie Burns year after year. Last year was a success, so I’d encourage people to get their tickets early.”

Both of the Sedors say anyone who is interested is welcome to attend, whether or not they have Scottish roots.

“I laugh about the idea that Robbie Burns Night is reserved for people of Scottish origin,” says Jenn. “Because when I was getting ready to attend my first Robbie Burns Night in Alameda, I went looking for my tartan, because I thought my background was Scottish.”

“There was no tartan,” she says. “Because my heritage is actually English, not Scottish.

But the whole point of Robbie Burns is that everyone who wants to can take part in an event that celebrates the heritage of a a lot of people from this area who do have Scottish roots.”

“So many Saskatchewan towns are named after poets,” explains Jenn. “Carlyle is named in honour of the Scottish poet Thomas Carlyle. So it’s celebrating Scottish heritage and history on a few levels.”

“We’d like to invite everyone to come out and enjoy a good time that’s steeped in Scottish history and tradition,” says Tim. “Tickets typically go quickly and a lot of people from communities throughout our local area attend every year and buy full tables,” says Jenn.

Living From The Inside Out Kenosee Lake resident William Sinclair’s inspirational story, “Living From The Inside Out” is featured in the January 2018 edition of Transformation Coaching magazine. This article is reprinted with the kind permission of the author.

By William Sinclair How do you sum up fifty-seven years of life in one article? I guess you don’t.

We all have a story and this is mine. I hope it will inspire you to also move into living your life to its fullest potential, humanly and spiritually, because really they are both one.

Like the constant movement of salt water that erodes entire rock faces by the ocean or the desert wind that shapes sand dunes and can fire sand particles into your face with the strength and speed of a bullet, I allowed the story of my childhood abuse and my own self-talk to both erode away my life and keep me hiding in the trenches.

I grew up in a house where love and abuse co-existed.

When she was a young adult, my mother had tried to kill her stepfather with a pair of scissors, while he slept, to eliminate his abuses on

her own life. Take that anger and now give her children and you get some very dysfunctional life experiences.

My dad, who had introduced me to pornography earlier in life, tried working away from home as often as possible. “I’m just waiting for your mother to die so I can start my life,” he once told me.

Don’t get me wrong.

I remember lots of loving things my parents did and sacrificed for me as a child. Dad sold his accordion to buy me my first drum set. Mom worked three jobs so she could send me and my brother on a holiday.

However, as I looked back on my life, whether perceived or real, there were many stories of abandonment, mind games, physical and emotional abuse, selfpunishment and a sense of not being worth anything. These stories resulted in my lack of selfconfidence, lack of selfworth and the unknown desire to keep abusing myself and sabotaging almost everything I put my hand to. Suicide was also a top thought in my consciousness.

The funny thing is, despite all these apparent setbacks, I always envisioned myself excelling at everything I did.

My faith base growing up was Roman Catholic. It was one of the things I seemed to cling to in my life. My mom’s answer to everything was, “Pray about it.”

Except when I was old enough to ask about sex.

Then her answer was, “Animals! Men are just animals!” I really didn’t

My God, at least the one I envisioned, was a punishing God on a distant throne that you had to journey to get to. If you were good, then you got closer. If you were bad you got punished, for your own good of course, and you started back at zero. It wasn’t until I was in my fifties I

realized that I had made my God a reflection of my mother.

As a teenager I dove into the music business realizing that when I strapped a guitar around my neck I got what I inwardly craved the most, attention and a form of love from others. Otherwise, I was a nobody to everyone. The more I

played the more attention I got. So I got good at playing.

I started playing in pubs when I was around fourteen years-old and in my late teens, I got into just about everything a travelling band could get into.

My turning point came after I had moved to Canada from Scotland. Yes, I know, I forgot to tell you I was raised in Scotland until I was twenty-one. Or that my mother was born in India and my dad in England.

To cut a long story short and compress some passage of time together, I had worked my way across Canada.

During that time I had a conversion experience, ended up attending a Catholic Bible School, then met my wife and started having kids. One summer, while the kids were little, we had flown to my parents’ house to visit with my mom and dad. A huge fight broke out between myself and my mother, followed by the usual “Nothing happened here so let’s stuff it” experience.

My wife said something when we flew home that changed everything. “That’s not normal life,” she said.

What? Up until that point I had assumed my entire upbringing was ‘normal life.’

From there, after almost curling up in a ball on the floor at work because a can of worms had been opened, I started going for counselling.

It helped somewhat. It gave me coping skills and moved me to look at my past more objectively. It also helped me stop punching holes in walls and toned down, to some degree, the mind games I was playng with my wife. In my childhood I had learned that love was not something you got freely but that it had to be ‘earned’ in one way or another. That’s another story though.

As much as the counselling helped, it was still surface stuff in comparison to what I’m going to share with you now.

I had shared that I grew up as a Roman Catholic and that I also seemed to cling to that faith.

What I didn’t share was how strong that ‘cling’ was.

Despite my skewed view of who God was, and how distant that God was, there was definitely a Divine Presence in my life that had kept me living and glued to my wife.

I found comfort in that presence and in return I wanted to serve this God with all my heart and soul.

There was a period of about ten years when I even served as sort of lay pastor in my church.

There was something inside of me that drove me, called me and pulled me to this God. I was in love with this God. At fifty-five years old my view of God would change.

It was 2013, about two months before my fifty-third December birthday.

My wife and I were running a kids’ summer camp facility in the bush by a lake. On the grounds there was also a year-round retreat house.

A meditation group met there every Wednesday evening.

As a Catholic I kept my distance. “Na. I have my own prayer stuff I do.

I’m good,” I would say, warding off every invite to attend.

I didn’t need meditation. I had developed a relationship with my Christian God and we would have ‘conversations’ regularly.

One morning, while sitting in a wilderness cabin with my prayer journal, I distinctly heard these words from the depths of my being, “ Your life is about to get messy. I want you to join the meditation group.” I just knew that God was speaking to me.

Yet, despite this apparent divine mandate, you could see the trail marks from my heels as I dragged myself to the next meditation meeting.

I think I carried a crucifix in my pocket, ready to pull out like a firearm at the first sign of trouble.

In hindsight, I may as well have taken some garlic and a vampire stake too. Silly thing.

Over the next two years we actually became close friends with Tami Dovell, who led the meditations. I remember constantly arguing with her over her teachings and beliefs compared to mine. Not that she ever argued back. Yet I kept going to meditation.

In 2015, cancer hit me hard.

After rounds of chemotherapy and twentyfive blasts of radiation, I received life-saving surgery. My esophahus was completely removed and my stomach was rolled into a tube and placed into my chest as a makeshift esophagus.

About a week after surgery, I was lying in my hospital bed and staring out of the window at the late evening sky. I asked my God, “So, now what?

Obviously I’m still alive.

So, now what?”

Again, from deep within I heard, “Get to know me.”

My immediate reply was, “But, I already know you.”

I had been studying for ordained ministry within the Catholic Church at that time. I had also attended Bible School, completed a three-year lay ministry leadership program and worked full-time within the Church.

God’s response was

NEWS simple. “Get to KNOW me.”

I didn’t quite understand.

After being released early from hospital, which was a miracle in itself, there began a long journey into my inner self.

It became apparent early on that this wasn’t a journey of he mind, like I had been used to, but instead a journey of the heart.

The late Dr. Wayne Dyer said that when the student is ready, the teachers will appear.

Meaning that when you’re ready to see and open to hear, you will see and hear what you’re meant to.

I was led to read and listen to great teachers like Dr. Wayne Dyer, Eckhart Tolle, Father Richard Rohr and Saint Francis of Assisi, to name a few. I was pulled into the inner journey of self-awareness and of inner transformation.

Learning to live from the inside out.

I discovered that I didn’t have to fight to become someone new, ‘someone better.’ All I needed to do was become the great Allower.

Allowing God to heal me, one layer, one spec, one self-defeating thought, one skewed view at a time.

I learned about ego and the True Self. I also learned that we have everything we need, everything that is great and beautiful, already inside of us. Divine and absolutely awesome. It was all there just waiting to be re-discovered.

Consider how pure a baby is after it is born.

That’s each one of us.

But, over time we cover that light up, that DNA of God within us, with the stories imposed upon us by ourselves and others. “I’m worthless. I’m no good. I’m ugly,” and a host of other things. I certainly did.

I learned from Joeel and Natalie Rivera that you can change your story, re-write what no longer serves you into something that does.

I learned from Eckhart Tolle how to become the silent observer of my thoughts, my emotions and my life. I actually became aware each time I got angry or felt lonely or was in a pity party. As soon as I observed that, rather than living inside the emotion like I used to do, being totally unaware and consumed by it, I discovered that it no longer had power over me. It was at that point a healing took place. Believe me, I probably had hundreds of those healing moments every day because I was extremely angry and had such a warped view of who I was.

I became aware

of how toxic and selfsabotaging my thoughts were. Think something long enough and you will begin to believe it as normal life. That’s why you have to be aware of the environment you place yourself in and the friends you keep.

Positive breeds positive. Negative breeds negative. I was allowing negative thoughts about myself to fester and breed more negative thoughts, without realizing it. My negative environment had become my own mind, which I took everywhere.

I don’t believe that everything around me has changed but instead it’s my view of everything around me, as well as what is within me, which has transformed. Father Richard Rohr says that you become what you already are. Beautiful and divine. Pretty deep and pretty real.

I’ve learned to live in the present moment, where God is. I’m no longer locked into the stress of a past that no longer exists or anxious about the future that also doesn’t exist. Only the present moment exists. The rest is all in your head.

I’m much ‘closer’ in awareness to the real

me, the true me, than I’ve ever been. Much more peaceful. Less and less tossed around emotionally like a ball on the surface of a stormy ocean. Much more living from the inside out.

My path was that of meditation, connecting to my Divine, silence, learning to at least slow down the multitude of thoughts in my mind from time to time and allowing myself to be healed.

It was, and still is at times, an emotionally painful journey but it is so worth it.

Whatever you allow yourself to be, that’s what you share with the world, including your own world. Hurt people hurt people. Healed people heal people.

Allow yourself to become healed and transformed. You’ll never regret it.

Members of the Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to several calls from Thursday, Jan. 4 to Thursday, Jan. 11.

911/False alarms A 911 call originating from the Carlyle area was a hang-up.

Two alarms went off in error.

Animal call(s) RCMP are investigating a case of possible animal abuse in the detachment area.

Assault A report of an assault with a weapon is currently under investigation by Carlyle RCMP. Assistance Carlyle RCMP assisted the Manitoba prosecutor’s office by serving a subpoena.

Members assisted the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice by serving subpoenas.

Police assisted local EMS with a patient.

Complying with an undertaking An individual was charged with not complying with an undertaking.

Fraud RCMP received a report of fraud involving

online activity from an individual in Arcola.

Harassing communications Carlyle RCMP are currently investigating a case of harassing communications involving youth in the detachment area. The messages involved are deemed to be sexual in nature. Staff Sgt. Darren Simons of the Carlyle RCMP detachment says: “I would like to remind youth that even a screen shot on a phone exists on the internet forever.”

Mischief In the Carlyle area, a property was damaged.

An intoxicated male was reported banging on doors in the Carlyle area.

RCMP received a report of individuals in Manor knocking on the doors of residences and running away.

Property dispute RCMP responded to a dispute over property involving a couple who were going through a break-up.

Theft An SUV was stolen in the Kisbey area. This vehicle was recovered by Carlyle RCMP. In Carlyle, a stolen truck was recovered by Carlyle RCMP. In Redvers, fuel was stolen from a vehicle.

RCMP received a report of theft from a business in Carlyle. No charges have been laid.

“We continue to urge people not to leave their keys in their vehicles and not to leave their vehicles unlocked,”

says Staff Sgt. Simons.

“If a vehicle is locked in a locked garage, these actions alone will prevent a lot of crime.”

Traffic offences/Collisions Carlyle RCMP are currently investigating two traffic collisions.

During one collision, the driver fled. The other collision involved an animal.

Two individuals were charged with using a cellphone while driving. The fine for this offence is $280.

A motorist received a warning regarding undue care and attention while driving.

Several motorists were found to be driving while suspended.

Carlyle RCMP issued five insurance violations during this period, including an uninsured vehicle which was abandoned on an area highway and towed. The fine for this offence is $580.

Members dealt with two intersection-related offences this week. The fine for this offence is $230. Staff Sgt. Simons says that individuals who refuse to stop when required to are a danger to themselves and others, saying: “Stop is stop. If your tires are still rolling, it’s not a stop. We have too many tragedies because people don’t come to a complete stop.”

Visiting with Clarence and Carol Westphal and other family and friends were Brett and Kim Westphal of Wrentham, AB. Ross and Joanne Corkish spent the holiday with their son, Troy and granddaughter Jaycee.

Heather and Dave and boys also spend time with her parents.

Skating, ice fishing and playing cards were the main activities for all.

Gloria Edwards motored to Regina to catch a flight to Edmonton where she spent the holidays with her son,

Greg and Lorianne Edwards and family.

Shirley Corkish returned home after spending a few days at Christmas with Rick and Michelle Corkish and their family. She then travelled to Cottage Grove, Minn. where she spent a couple of weeks with son Jeff and Laura Corkish and family.

She also had the pleasure of watching several of Owen, Addison and Mason’s hockey games and celebrated the New Year’s celebration.

Congratulations to Morgan Wasylyk and Ty Currie of Carlyle on the

birth of a son. He was born on Dec. 21 in Regina. He weighed 7 lbs. 6 oz. and has been named Kitt William Freeman.

John and Carol Husband travelled to South Glastenbury, Conn. where they spent Christmas with Jason and Pam Husband and family.

Mel and Vivian Vail enjoyed the Christmas season with Jerry and Lori Filteau and family in Regina.

Police issued several speeding tickets during this period, with fines reaching $440. This particular fine involved a vehicle reaching a speed of 135 km in an 80 km zone. Based on speed alone, this ticket would normally be $240. However, when speeding at a rate of over 35 km over the posted rate and again, over a posted rate of 50 km, fines increase.

Two individuals were fined $175 each for seatbelt violations.

RCMP members issued several warnings to motorists who were driving vehicles with obstructed license plates.

A motorist was found to be driving without a valid license as well as operating a vehicle with inadequate headlamps.

An individual received a warning from police for failing to produce vehicle registration.

RCMP also issued fines and/or warnings for: damaged windshields, window tint, inadequate fenders and mud flaps and a nonfunctioning vehicle speedometer.

Uttering threats A report of uttering threats was reported to the RCMP for information purposes.

Olympic countdown

The Winter Olympic Games are coming up Feb. 9 to Feb. 25 and are being hosted in Pyeongchang, in the Republic of Korea, this year.

What are some fun facts about South Korea heading in?

The number four is considered unlucky; much like our number 13 has a reputation of being unlucky. In the Korean language Kelly Running the word “four” sounds very Observer Staff similar to the word “died.” So, although we might skip a 13th floor at all in buildings with elevators, they will use the letter “F” as a place holder.

South Korea has developed its own sound with K-pop becoming a very popular music genre there.

The music is a mixture of hip-hop, pop, rock, and R&B sounds. Do you remember PSY’ s popular “Gangnam Style?” Well that catchy tune is his 18th K-pop single.

South Koreans use the alphabet “Hangul” for writing. It was created in the 15th century using 19 consonants and 21 vowels. In addition to this difference, the letters are grouped into blocks of syllables to form a word instead of in a straight line like English.

Personally I’ve always enjoyed the Olympics. I love watching the dedication and abilities of the top athletes in the world. What they can do is usually nothing less than amazing. Being that I’m Canadian, I enjoy the summer sports in the Olympics, but I love watching all of the winter sports.

The winter sports include Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Bobsleigh, Cross Country Skiing, Curling, Figure Skating, Freestyle Skiing, Hockey, Luge, Nordic Combined, Short Track Speed Skating, Skeleton, Ski Jumping, Snowboard, and Speed Skating.

My favourites definitely include hockey – which will be a little different this year since the NHL didn’t allow their athletes to compete – freestyle skiing, skeleton, snowboard, speed skating (mostly because I remember watching Catriona Le May Doan light it up when I was little), and figure skating… although I’m the type that if the Olympics are on, I’ll probably flip to the channel and let it play.

The Olympics bring people together – it promotes camaraderie amongst the nations partaking.

When a Canadian broke their ski pole, a Norwegian coach, gave her a spare in order to finish the race after Sara Renner made it midway through the team sprint event and thought all was lost.

In the past the Olympics have been integral in world events as well. Jesse Owens, African American, winning four gold medals during the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany. There was racial tension there considering Hitler was pushing for the Aryan race as the superior race; but, Owens completely crushed this belief of the time by winning those four gold medals.

So, the Olympics not only are a way to promote a world culture, but provides a venue for addressing world discussions.

Something that came up during the summer Olympics two years ago was the Egyptian Beach Volleyball Team competing. Beach Volleyball is traditionally played in bikinis, however, the Egyptian team wore a sports type hijab, long sleeves, and pants.

In the Egyptians first game, which was against Germany, the differing cultures were quite the discussion point. At the end of the day it allowed people from any religion or background that you can succeed and reach your goals.

So, once again I’m looking forward to watching the Olympics.

What we can’t risk losing After a day of sightseeing we returned to our campsite to the news that my grandfather was not doing well so we quickly packed up and headed home. The next morning I couldn’t find my wallet. We went through every bag and box, nook and cranny but couldn’t locate it. It was gone--along with medical cards, My Outlook credit cards, driver’s license and Shelley Luedtke mishmash of rewards programs, pictures, and cash that typically fill our wallets. We quickly made arrangements to replace necessary documents but even as we were doing that I was convinced we would someday find my wallet. We never did.

A man in Austria had a different ending. He dropped his wallet in Lake Attersee while fishing and a full twenty years later scooped it out again in one of his nets.

A woman pulling vegetables from her garden was shocked to find her wedding ring wrapped around the top of a carrot--16 years after losing it.

Insert carat joke here.

And lost pets…just try to swallow past the lump in your throat or keep the tears from spilling over when watching a video of a pet being reunited with its family.

Any place children gather you will likely find a table or box containing an odd assortment of misplaced supplies, but lest we think children are the only ones to leave belongings behind we need only consider airports, train stations or hotels to get a sense of how easy it is to lose track of items--even ones we consider valuable. Feature articles, documentaries and entire art exhibits have been dedicated to the subject of what is sitting in lost and found departments around the world.

We can lose a lot of things: possessions, a game, weight, money, a job. These are also things we can find or add to our lives. But are we able to find things that we may not even know we should be looking for?

It is said one of the most over-used phrases currently in use is exclaiming someone has “found their

voice.” One analyst remarked this phrase was used in 19 different instances by major media outlets to describe moments in various Hillary Clinton campaigns. Can you really find your voice 19 different times? What happens in the interim that would cause a need to continually re-find it?

The idea of finding our voice references our being willing to talk. It also requires opportunity, preparedness, and an audience that determines its relevance to them, but our willingness to speak is crucial to the equation. Which makes me wonder if some of the most important things we have lost are directly tied to the fact that we have lost our voice.

Misplace a wallet or piece of jewelry and we can place notices hoping someone will have information that can assist in its return. If we lose a pet we can post pictures and call others for help. And there are those who would be delighted to share the news that they have lost weight. But when it comes to lost and broken relationships people become disconcertingly silent.

There is a reluctance to voice words such as “I’m sorry,” or “I was wrong” and consequently few opportunities to say “I forgive you” or “I miss you.” It’s not that we’ve misplaced the words--just too many people have forgotten how to say them. Why? Because little is our fault any longer. It isn’t necessary to accept responsibility because anything said or done can be blamed on somebody else or the situation. If someone gets bad mouthed it is easier to fight back rather than getting to the heart of the relationship and fix what needs fixing. Resentments are allowed to build because people aren’t willing to say what is needed--to say something that will be a starting point--to say anything that will help bring back what is lost.

The effort we put in looking for something is a function of the value we place on the missing item, but when it comes to relationships there doesn’t seem to be the same sense of urgency. People instead allow themselves to learn to live without the relationship and don’t take time to wonder what could have been. It needs to starts with someone saying something. Finding their voice could help them find what matters most.

That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money

Can you afford to build your dream home?

With house prices rising so rapidly over the last five years, many people are tearing down their homes to build new ones instead of purchasing a new place elsewhere. Starting from scratch will allow you to create your dream abode, but you need to know the costs.

Here’s what the experts tell us.

Find the right location In some major cities where the average price for a detached home is about $1 million, you may have to pay a lot to buy the perfect plot of land. In that case, it could be cheaper to build on an existing property and avoid real estate and land transfer fees.

Buying land in a rural area, or a smaller city, could also be cheaper. But, if your plot is in a more remote location, without existing infrastructure, there could be extra

costs. A septic system will cost $30,000 to $50,000, a well adds $10,000 to $20,000, and getting hydro connected over what may be a long run is also very expensive.

Find the right style of house Once you’ve acquired the land, the next step is finding the right style of house. Bylaws may limit how close you can build to the property line, the building’s height and where features like windows can be placed.

You can apply for a zoning variance through the city for some of these changes.

You may be able to purchase pre-drawn or stock plans for approximately $1.25 per square foot.

You can also hire an architect and work from scratch.

Architect’s fees for a project can vary from 7.5% to 15% of

construction costs.

Know your construction costs The average cost to build a new house in Canada is about $200 per square foot – meaning a 2,000 square foot home would come in at nearly $400,000.

Costs can increase to $300 or more per square foot depending on the lot location, type of materials used, and adding custom interior and exterior elements.

Bungalows are the most expensive to build on a persquare-foot basis. The excavation and foundation and the roof and rafters come with high costs, so low, spread-out homes run pricey.

Know your additional costs If you need a designer to select details such as faucets,

cabinetry, flooring, window coverings, furniture and so on, the fees vary from a flat feet to hourly, typically between $100 and $200 an hour.

The cost of your dream home really depends on what you want and what you can afford. Set a realistic budget, look ahead to possible extra costs and get firm, signed quotes. Expect some big decisions and a few delays before your dream home becomes a reality. And be sure you have the money you need by talking

to your professional advisor.

Tracing samples back to the farm

By Calvin Daniels The concept of being able to trace a sample of grain back to the farm long after it has been in the grain handling system is an intriguing one.

On the one hand such a system would seem to be something that once fully achieved will ensure a safer food supply, or at least there will be the ability to more directly assign blame.

It should be remembered that by the time you begin back tracking something to its farm of origin a problem has already cropped up. It is not preventing the incident that sparked the investigation, although it could prevent future issues from arising from a given grain bin if that was the initial source.

While certainly there is a health safety element to trace back systems, a greater motivator, even if those in the system don’t want to admit it, is who will be liable if the courts become involved.

I recently read about a mock scenario where a ship

filled with Canadian grain hits a foreign harbour where the grain is tested and the shipment rejected because the samples exceed the maximum residue limit for a particular pesticide.

There is a huge cost to such a scenario, and questions are going to fly regarding who is responsible.

Now some will suggest that is where tracing samples back to the farm comes into play. It might be argued if a company is loading a ship headed to a country with very specific tolerances for a particular pesticide they should have done sufficient sample testing when buying not to have to worry. Of course they might well argue the farmers selling them grain are supposed to have met label requirements on any crop protection product so they need not have worried.

Who should have carried out the due diligence to ensure the shipment was not rejected can quickly become a legal matter, and then it will

be up to lawyers and judges.

And that has to make farmers shudder just a little.

The grain handling system is a diverse one from the elevator to the rail lines to the ports, shipping companies, grain inspectors, and of course the company who made the pesticide. All are going to have deeper pockets in terms of any litigation than the farmer.

Certainly one can’t argue against anything that stands to make the food supply safer, but there is more at play here.

The tolerances from herbicide and pesticide residues can vary country to country and are often imposed more as a trade boundary than a food safety measure, but they still matter in terms of trade.

If that trade is impacted by samples missing the targets the system will look to protect itself from similar incidences as a minimum, and may eventually look to recoup costs if the system can find the smoking gun, even if that is at the farm level.

Cougars reaching final stretch of regular season Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle PureChem Cougars came up against the Wawota Flyers and the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings last week. Coming up they host three home games starting with a game versus the Bienfait Coalers on Sunday, Jan. 21, followed by one on Tuesday, Jan. 30, against the Redvers Rockets, and finally against the Arcola/Kisbey Combines on Friday, Feb. 2.

The PureChem Cougars battled in Wawota, but came up short on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Wawota earned a 5-2 win over Carlyle. Carlyle goals came from Brett Turgeon assisted by Cooper Fox in the first, while Clayton Geiger earned a goal in the second off an assist by Billy Greenwood.

The Flyers played strong through the three periods with Devin Stewart earning a goal, Justin Lamontagne scoring a hat trick, and Kayle Swanson lighting it up.

Competition in Yellow Grass saw the

PureChem Cougars take off to a slow start with the Wheat Kings controlling the first period on Saturday, Jan. 13.

They rallied together and went hard in the second and third periods. Cooper Fox earned the first goal of the night for the PureChem Cougars, while Branden Lequyer found the net off an assist from Ty Currie and Clayton Geiger.

Out of the second period the Wheat Kings led 4-2. Heading into the third the Wheat Kings took control early, but the PureChem Cougars battled to the end with two goals by Brett Turgeon: one unassisted and the other with help from Mark Shaw and Sam Matthewson.

The Estevan Bear Cats were back to their regular schedule this week with competition against the Regina Tigers on Jan. 14 in Carlyle.

The team is made up of youth and coaching staff from the southeast including: Missy Biermann, Julie Frostad, Kamri Olfert, Karissa Elliot, Corey Purves, Riley Klein, Hanna Jaworski, Emily Frostad, Caydence Chapman, Kaysha Turner, McKenna Walls, Kenna Hagel, Kassidy Johnson, Kylie Davis, and Jesa Colliness for athletes and Brian Hagel, Ashley Miller, and Troy Turner on the coaching staff.

In action on Sunday, the Bantam A Girls took on the Regina Tigers in a close battle. Both teams went scoreless in the first period – a testament to their abilities on the ice both offensively and defensively.

Brady and Brooke: some names to watch in 2018

Bruce Penton With 11 months and a week or so to go in 2018, let’s have a look at some athletes who will undoubtedly be part of the news cycle before the calendar flips to 2019.

We’ll do it alphabetically, so as to not offend a potential member of this list whose surname happens to start with X, Y or Z. — Tom Brady: The 40-year-old quarterbacking marvel of the New England Patriots continues to defy traditional aging norms to perform at the highest level possible on the NFL’s best team. His sixth Super Bowl crown, coming in February, will

never be surpassed.

— Josh Donaldson: Chances are this popular slugging third-baseman with the Blue Jays will be with another team come August, because the Jays are going nowhere and Donaldson’s diminishing skills and new large contract are helping them get there.

— Roger Federer: Another ageless wonder in the Brady mold, the Swiss tennis star continues to amaze in what is traditionally a young man’s sport. At age 36, his next Grand Slam title will be his 20th, cementing his title as his sport’s Greatest Of All Time.

— Brooke Henderson: There’s no slam-dunk No. 1 player in the women’s world of golf (a handful of golfers occupied the No. 1 position at various times in the past year alone), so there’s no reason why Canada’s sweetheart can’t rise to the peak of her sport this year.

— Kaillie Humphries of

Calgary, the best female bobsledder in the world, was a gold medal winner at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics and she’s still at the top of her sport, so why not a bobsled gold medal hat trick in February?

— Kevin Koe: Skipping Canada’s men’s curling team at the Winter Olympics brings with it the expectation of gold, and Koe will deliver.

He’s won two world titles, proving along the way that no one is more clutch with the game on the line than this guy.

— Johnny Manziel: The Kardashian of the football world brings his talents and playboy reputation to Hamilton to give the Canadian Football League some People Magazine-style attention. He’ll create positives in the media and at the gate, but the jury’s still out on how he’ll do on the field. And Manziel knows all about juries.

On Friday, Jan. 26, in the afternoon, the grade 12’s write Social 30, the grade 11’s write ELA 20, and the grade 10’s write ELA A10. Jarred Valentine Texas bound with Sask. Selects Kelly Running Observer Staff

At 16-years-old, Jarred Valentine, son of Steve and April Valentine, has earned an exciting opportunity to compete in San Antonio, Texas. Jarred’s hard work and perseverance has led to him being chosen for the Southeast Selects 16U Football Team which is based in Moose Jaw. The young man, a multi-sport athlete playing hockey and competing in golf as well, began playing in Grade 6 out of Estevan. When that league ended, Jarred had developed a great passion for the game and a new opportunity to play arose with the Moosomin Generals.

“He played with the

Estevan Steelers for two years and when that team folded, we found out there was a league in Moosomin,” April explained. “He’s been there ever since. It’s a really great program that they’ve built up there.”

Jarred added, “We’ve made it to the finals the last two years.”

(This included the opportunity to host the league final in 2017 as well.)

With the Moosomin Generals, Jarred earned the opportunity to play on the All-Star Team of the Rural South Manitoba Football League.

They competed against North Manitoba in Winnipeg last year in May. Over the past few years, Jarred is thankful for the support of his family and friends,

as well as his coaches, which includes Dexter Mondor and Jason Schenn with the Generals.

With the Generals, Jarred plays as a fullback, but after try-outs for the Selects team were held in Moose Jaw, Nov. 18-19, he was asked back the first weekend in December for the coaching staff to see him in a different position.

“They couldn’t decide what position really fit him best,” April explained. “They decided that a D-Lineman was a better fit and offered him a place on the team.

We were told as we were leaving to expect a call within the week as they had others retrying out as well, but that same night he received the call saying he was on the

team.”

With football becoming ever more popular, Saskatchewan is sending a 12U, 14U, and 16U team, while Manitoba is sending an 18U team to San Antonio, Texas this February for the week long round robin tournament.

Jarred is particularly excited for the opportunity in Texas as the football program in the United States is very strong.

“I’m really looking forward to just the level of football,” he explained. “It’s pretty hard hitting.”

Which when his favourite part of the sport is the hard hitting contact, Jarred will do well and rise to the challenge.

“We’re very proud of him,” April stated on behalf of herself and

Steve. “It’s a big opportunity. Playing through the Sask Selects teams opens up potential offers to schooling in the future. If someone notices you they follow you.

There are always scouts out during their regular season as well.”

“I’m hopeful of being able to work towards schooling with football,” Jarred added.

This opportunity with the Selects offers another level of competition as well as an extra opportunity to be seen by scouts for his future.

It is the sixth year that the Selects have organized teams to attend the tournament and elite football in Saskatchewan has seen a dramatic rise over the years in skills and abilities.

Clifford Shepherd 1927 - 2017

Clifford Shepherd Of Alameda, SK., and Naples, Florida passed away on Nov 3, 2017 after a long battle with Heart Disease, Osteoporosis and Cancer.

Clifford was born in Alameda, SK., on Aug 3, 1927 to Victor and Irma (Knebush) Shepherd. He attended school in the Alameda area and University in Saskatoon. While working for Farm Credit Canada in Meadow Lake, SK., he met the love of his life. He married Marcile Wigton on July 15, 1963 in Meadow Lake, SK. They later moved back to Alameda and farmed, he working in Carnduff for CCIL and they moved there in 1975. In 1980 they moved to Florida with the three youngest children. Where they lived til 1992 when they retired and became snowbirds. Returning to the Prairies in summer and Florida in winter. They both loved the over twenty years journeying back and forth.

Cliff was a farmer at heart, and an avid woodworker, golfer, curler, expert snooker and bridge player. In his later years he drove a bus for the elderly and disabled while in Florida for the winter months.

Cliff lived a great long life �illed with love of his family and good times. He was always ready with a story of farm life or his adventures of his youth.

Cliff was preceded in death by his wife Marcile in 2016, his parents and sisters Doreen and Joyce. Cliff is survived by his brother Garth (Susan) Shepherd.

Daughters Evelyn (Bob) Lochart, Calla (Tom) Leon, sons Aaron (Karen) Shepherd, Mark (Ginger) Shepherd. Grandchildren, Tracey (Lindsay) Gibson, Becky Walker, Luke (Crystal) Lochart, Katy Shepherd, Christopher (Brittany) Shepherd, Gregory (Leah) Shepherd, Patrick, William, Carolyn and Michael Leon, Sean and Ian Shepherd and Great Grandchildren Danielle, Dawn, Bryce Gibson, Jordan and Baylee Walker, Megan and Kole Lochart, James and Blake Shepherd.

A graveside memorial service will be held July 7, 2018 at Alameda Cemetery at 2 p.m.

Carol (Carl) Rueben Franklin French Sept. 26, 1941 - Jan. 8, 2018

He was 77 years-old. He was born on Sec. 19, Tp. 40, Rge. 17, W.2, Saskatchewan, near Pleasantdale, Saskatchewan.

Lois, his “special friend” and Carl DONATED his body to the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, for the purpose of medical research.

Carl requested that there be no service. However, he asked that those who wish to donate in his memory do so to the College of Medicine, 107 Wiggins Road, Saskatoon, Sask. S7N 5E5. Phone (24 hour answering service): (306)-966-4075.

Doris Winnifred Stewart (nee Waddell) 1923 - 2018

Doris Stewart passed away peacefully at noon on January 5, 2018 at Tatagwa in Weyburn, Saskatchewan surrounded by her immediate family following a medical event the day following her 94th birthday which she celebrated on December 20th. Doris remained alert and was communicative to her �inal moments in which she expressed her joy to being re-established with her husband who passed away in the spring of 2010. Her arms and heart were open to her journey ahead. Doris was predeceased by her parents, Russell and Nellie Waddell; husband, Donald Smith Stewart; grandson, Jonathan Cooper and son-in-law, Bill Cooper. Doris was the youngest of a family of eight, four boys and four girls. They were raised on a mixed farm three miles from the community of McGee, where they all went to school from primary through to high school.

In winter they travelled to school in a wagon box with sad irons placed at their feet to stay warm. Bath night was Saturday night in the house and everyone took turns sharing the water that �inally ended up in the garden for the plants. Doris completed Grade 12 and was the Valedictorian for the graduating class.

Following graduation, Doris moved to Calgary in 1943 where some of her brothers and sisters were living. Doris met her husband Donald Smith Stewart, who was enlisted in the, Royal Canadian Air Force in 1944, in Calgary and was married December 1, 1944 at Hillhurst, United Church. Don and Doris had two children, Donna born in 1945 and Robert in 1948.

They were a military family and travelled extensively.

Their Canadian postings included Calgary, Alberta, Rivers, Manitoba, Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Edmonton, Alberta, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Trenton, Ontario, and lastly Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, where they retired from the military in 1972. In addition, they lived 3 years in Germany (1956-59) as part of their military service. They retired to Kenosee Lake, Saskatchewan, where they purchased a farm that they operated for 25 years. In 2000 they settled in Carlyle where Doris provided love and care to Don as he struggled with the onset of Alzheimer’s that eventually contributed to his passing in March 2010. Doris moved to Eden Homes in Weyburn where she resided until the spring of 2017 before settling in to Tatagwa.

Doris had a variety of jobs throughout her life, mostly working as a book keeper for several businesses as they lived their nomadic military life. At Kenosee Lake she worked seasonally several years at Kenosee Gardens, a major tourist facility. Doris was heavily involved with Girl Guides during the Germany years and was dedicated to her children and grandchildren where she provided sel�less devotion to providing all with generous love and attention. Doris and Don’s doors were always open to family and friends. She and Don were heavily involved in the development of the resort village of Kenosee Lake where Don served in the role of mayor for several years providing leadership to the administrative independence of that community. Doris had an incredible mind and was an avid writer and she compiled extensive memoirs that will continue to serve as a powerful testament to a life lived full of love and kindness. She was the last surviving sibling of her family and of the family of her husband, but her memory and love resonate through her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, the latter of which are just starting their journeys, the youngest of which is 9. Doris expressed her love to her surviving family to her last mortal moment and always found a way to light up her eyes, to smile and put a smile on the faces of those close to her, she was a great lady. Doris will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Donna Cooper of Calgary, AB; son Bob and his wife (Marthika) Stewart of Calgary, AB; grandchildren, Terra and Jarrett and 4 great grandchildren. At the request of Doris there will be no formal service and interment will follow at a later date. Donations in the memory of Doris may be made to the Alzheimer Society.

Guests with Leonard and Lil Patton on January 5 were her brothers, Joe Mohnar and his wife Donna, Elmer Mohnar and his wife Jeanne (all of Kennedy), as well as Trevor, Sheri , Cordelia and Keagan Patton.

They all helped Joe celebrate his 70th birthday.

Margaret Peet spent a week (Jan. 4-10) in Estevan babysitting her granddaughters Claire and Alice Mowchenko while their parents were away on a holiday.

Congratulations to Travis Carriere and Lyndsey Sheldon who were married on Jan. 9 at the Azul Beach Sensatori Resort, Mexico.

Travis is the son of David and Shanna Carriere (Alida) and Lyndsey, the daughter of Mel and Todd Trytten (Regina).

There were 39 guests who shared in the marriage, reception and dance which were held on the beach on a beautiful breathtaking day. Attending from Alida were best man Murray Nelson, groomsmen Jesse Germain, Fraser Yates and Justin McNish.

guess we should be used to it as we do live in Saskatchewan and it is only January – but we can still hope for the balmy weather, which helps to shorten the winter.

Heard rumors that the temperatures are to be in the plus digits sometime this coming week – wouldn’t that be great?

No wonder there’s colds, flu bugs etc. going around these days with the ups and downs of the temperatures that one may forget to keep dressed warmly. Guess we are all anxious to have warmer weather, yet I don’t like to burst the bubbles, but we could still have a couple of months of miserable winter weather. Oh the joys of living in Canada – we’d be bored if we didn’t have weather to complain about (ha ha).

Did you get to watch curling this weekend – there was a number of different games on the telly? I really enjoyed watching the provincial ladies curling for the Tournament of Hearts – just wonder why they couldn’t show Saskatchewan games too. Big

question now is what Jennifer Jones will do as she will be missing a member of her team who is off to the Olympics. It will be interesting to hear. Whatever happens let’s hope that Saskatchewan’s team will come out on top – Go Saskatchewan go.

Speaking of curling – did you know that the men’s Tankard is to be held in Estevan this year? It will be a great time to be able to see some excellent curling and of course cheer for the Saskatchewan team do their best – winners from here play at the Brier later this spring.

Oh I’m beginning to enjoy this time of year, with all the curling happening. Enjoy – I surely will!

Kitchen Group #1 served up a total of 40 breakfasts on Jan. 14, which is held at the Alida Rink. They broke the record of 34 which was the total served last week by Group 2. Now the challenge is on for Kitchen Group # 2 who will be at the helm next Sunday.

Speaking of being at the rink, this coming weekend is our big event – the GRAND RE-OPENING of the Alida Rink. It’s a great time to come and see the new renovations – looks great. Hope to see you there.

We have been in the deep freeze later this past week again after we got comfy with the weather being in a respectful range of single minus digits. Oh well

The Associated Gospel Church brought us the first worship service of the year. It was lead by Bob Thiessen, with Ruth Kliever at the piano. Her brother john gave his first message, telling how the shepherd boy David calmed wicked King Saul with his music.

There were many visitors over the New Year weekend. Sarah Adair, Tony, James and Thomas Patoine, from Montreal, visited Poppa Alan Adair; Rene and Shannon Baudu and Kaitlyn came to visit Aunt Alice Chaput, as did Leanne Jackson.

Jack Lemoine visited Edith Gagnon. Harold and Cheryl Friesen visited the Grandmas Thiessen. Samantha and Brynn Downer visited Angela.

Eight residents attended the monthly meeting, and welcomed Ralph Mills. We now have only one empty room. Thank you to Doris Erickson and Gloria Oliver who have been calling Bingo for us. Come and join us half the proceeds will go to Telemiracle. Thank you to Francis Sheard for keeping our birds happy. And to Dawn for cord stretchers.

Today January 10 is International Day of nurses. I give thanks for my Aunt Mary Houston R.N., who nursed in the trenches in France in WW1, and latter with tubercular patients in Fort San. She brought me and my siblings into the world. As a teenager I watched her care for her mother with Alzheimer’s; in housing which was little better than their homestead shack. It had water, but no sewer, power or central heating. Small wonder that I appreciate Sunrise Villa! Or that I named my daughter Mary!
