Brooke Apshkrum slides for Canada Lynne Bell

Team Canada’s Brooke Apshkrum is competing for Canada in the women’s luge competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The 18-year-old athlete’s exceptional performances have catapulted her to Team Canada in under a decade - and friends and fans from this corner of Saskatchewan will cheer her on, knowing she has a connection to Carlyle.

Brooke spent a few of her formative years in Saskatchewan and when her family moved to Calgary, attended the National Sport School at Calgary’s Canada Olympic Park, where she was an honours student. Her father, Mark Apshkrum grew up in Carlyle and says that the entire Apshkrum family is excited and touched by the interest in Brooke’s athletic career from people from his hometown.

“She is in Latvia right now and the luge team will travel to Seoul from there on February 4, so by the time this is in the paper, she’ll already be there,” says Mark. “Her mom (Sandy Apshkrum) was talking to her and told her we’d be talking to the newspaper in Carlyle.

(Brooke) was thrilled about it.”

“She loved coming to Carlyle when my mom was still alive and she still remembers the playground there.”

Although her playground days are in the past, Mark says his daughter had an affinity for the sport of luge from a young age.

“In 2010 she tried it,” says Mark. “And from day one we knew that that was what she was going to do.”

“As parents, you’re still kind of outsiders

looking in,” says Mark.

“Initially, we helped her financially, but we never had to tell her to get up and go - whether it was dry land training in the summer or during the season in the winter.

I never had to be that ‘pushy dad.’ “ “She enjoyed it and she had a talent for it from the outset, so we’ve always just supported her in what she wants to do.”

Brooke’s talent and work ethic has transformed that 10-year-old into an Olympian in an unusually short time.

After joining the Calgary Luge Club’s development squad, Brooke quickly progressed through Canada’s Junior and Senior National teams, joining the latter at the age of 17, which is considered a young age to do so.

“Our top luger, Alex Gough, the one who has the most medals in Canada for luge, also started at that age,” says Mark.

“But usually, they’re at least 20-years-old before they’re on the national team here in Canada.” Gough is now 30 and another of Brooke’s Olympic team mates, Kimberly McRae is 25, so the 18-year-old is going into the Games in Pyeongchang as a young - but not inexperienced - competitor.

In 2016, Brooke took top place at the podium when she captured the gold medal in the women’s singles luge at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway, clocking a top speed of 114.7 kmh (71.2 mph) with a time of just over 52 seconds.

The 12-corner track was the site of luge competition at the 1994 Winter Olympic Games. One European commentator described Brooke’s run as “flawless.”

to witness their daughter’s win over Germany’s former world champion Jessica Tiebel (who took home a silver medal) and bronze medallist Madeleine Egle of Austria. Brooke’s medal was her first international gold and was considered to be a surprise win by some because she came up from second place after the first run of the competition to win only six years after she first took up luge.

“It was quite something to be there in Lillehammer when she did that,” says Mark.

“And Sandy and I have also been to the World Junior Championships in Austria to watch her there.”

“That was a little different,” he laughs. “because we travelled all the way there to watch her crash on her second run, but that’s the sport.”

“Wherever and whenever we can, we watch her train and compete.”

Brooke’s family - her parents and her sister Layne (a University of Calgary student) - will travel to South Korea to share in Brooke’s Olympic experience.

“We arrive in Seoul on February 6,” says Mark. “On the day of the opening ceremonies, we’ll be at Canada House. Brooke starts sliding pretty early, so she’ll be finished competing by the 12th.”

“She’ll be there for both the opening and closing ceremonies.”

Brooke has said that because her 2010 start in luge coincided with the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, her passion for her chosen sport was intensified and her dream of becoming an Olympic competitor began.

Now with that goal coming to fruition, her dad says simply: “We wouldn’t miss it.”

Residents of the Redvers Long Term Care Centre enjoy afternoon learning about the Philippines Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Redvers Long Term Care Centre works hard to ensure residents are enjoying themselves.

On Monday, Jan. 29, one way to do this was to create a “stay”cation by turning the activity room into the Philippines. With fun facts and food from the Philippines served, it was like being there for an hour.

Rael and Annie Familaran were born and raised in Romblon before moving to Manila and eventually the long journey to Canada.

“Annie came over in December of 2007 and she sponsored me here in November of 2014,” Rael explained.

Together Annie and Rael presented photos and spoke of their lives in the Philippines before moving to Canada.

“We’ve really been enjoying Canada,” Rael said. “We miss our hometown, but we were able to go on vacation there last year.”

The residents were told about the unique cultural and environmental characteristics of the Philippines, while the Familarans were able to show photos of their recent trip and answer many questions about the Philippines as the residents had questions.

Annie and Rael Familaran presented residents of the Redvers Long Term Care Centre with stories of the Philippines and showed photos of their most recent trip home.

“There are many volcanoes because it is part of what they call the ‘Ring of Fire’ in the Pacific,” Rael said. “It’s an archipelago and although there are active volcanoes, they are quite quiet, although there is one erupting there now.”

“If you enjoy beaches then the Philippines are for you. There is about 1,200 miles of white sand beaches; and we only have two seasons rainy and dry.

The rainy season is from June to December.”

They are a tourist destination and a National Geological Monument.

Rael and Annie were very happy to share a piece of their home with the residence of the Redvers Long Term Care Centre. The residents were treated to the stories and photos from the Philippines, but also enjoyed an afternoon snack including Filipino desserts and native fruit.

Robbie Burns Night A Scottish success Lynne Bell

The 2018 edition of “An Evening to Celebrate Robbie Burns” was a Scottish success as 120 people attended the Saturday, Feb. 3 event at Carlyle Memorial Hall.

The evening is organized by members of southeastern Saskatchewan’s ABBA 15 Masonic Lodge and is a continuation of Alameda’s Robbie Burns Night. The festivities honour the life of Scottish poet and lyricist, Robbie Burns (1759-1796), whose legacy is celebrated every year throughout the world on or near his January 25 birthday.

“It’s a fantastic addition to Carlyle’s annual calendar of events,” says Jenn Sedor, one of the local organizers. “It’s the second year we’ve hosted ‘An Evening to Celebrate Robbie Burns’ in Carlyle and we’re thrilled with the turnout and the sup-

port of everyone from communities from not only this corner of Saskatchewan, but parts of Manitoba, too.”

Robbie Burns celebrations follow a format which includes all things Scottish - including pipers, dancers, numerous toasts, a Scottishthemed menu, scotch tastings and the piping in of the iconic Scottish delicacy, haggis.

Along with samples of haggis (from a supplier in Brandon), attendees dined on a roast beef supper prepared by David and Shelley Slykhuis of Carlyle.

“We’re serving tatties (potatoes) tonight,” explains Shelley with a smile. “And for dessert, we’re serving shortbread iced with tartan patterns with strawberry trifle.”

A fully-stocked bar staffed by “Men in Kilts” was complemented by a table dedicated to scotch-tasting.

derson of Carnduff says: “We really try to make our scotch-tasting an adventure, with a variety of scotches from around the world.”

Fellow Mason - Carlyle’s Tim Sedor - agrees, adding: “For five dollars, you can sample a scotch that might normally cost $150. We’ve got a great selection this year and it’s a chance to try something new for a great price.”

Master of Ceremonies Rolland Bouchard of Carlyle presided over a Scottish-themed program, which included The Selkirk Grace by Estevan’s Troy LeBlanc, followed by the piping in of the haggis by David Kyle of Brandon and Regan Miller of Carlyle.

Miller also gave the Address to the Haggis and the Toast to the Haggis.

As MC, Bouchard toasted Robbie Burns and emphasized that the evening was intended to celebrate the colourful

life of the Scottish poet, rather than commemorate his death.

Carlyle’s Crystal and Adam Bee gave the Toasts to the Lads and Lassies, followed by performances by Scottish dancer, Madison Zandee of Estevan’s Drewitcz School of Dance, pipe performances by David Kyle and Regan Miller and a poetry reading by Troy LeBlanc.

The evening ended with music by the Katie Miller Band, as dancers took to the floor.

Tim Sedor summed up the evening this way: “We wanted everyone to come out and enjoy a good time that’s steeped in Scottish history and tradition.”

“This year, we welcomed people from all over southeastern Saskatchewan - Carlyle, Manor, Kenosee Lake, Kisbey, Alida, Redvers, Estevan, Oxbow, Gainsborough, Carnduff, Oxbow, Moosomin, and as far away as Brandon,” adds Jenn Sedor..

“So for the second year, we’ve joined a global celebration right here in our corner of the prairies.”

Weekly RCMP report Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle detachment of the RCMP responded to a variety of calls between Thursday, Jan. 25, and the morning of Thursday, Feb. 1.

Animal calls Stray dogs were reported throughout the week.

Cattle were reported out between Redvers and Antler.

“The cattle were gone on arrival,” Staff Sergeant Darren Simons says, then smiled, “Members believe the cows determined the grass wasn’t greener on the other side of the fence.”

Assault There was an assault reported in the Carlyle area, but the complainant didn’t want to lay charges.

An individual was shot with a pellet gun in the Manor area. In response they took the pellet gun and beat the other person with it.

Both were charged with

assault with a weapon and both were charged with assault causing bodily harm.

Assistance Carlyle RCMP assisted BC RCMP with a subpoena.

They also assisted Estevan Police Services with a warrant.

Members assisted at a fire call to the R.M. of Brock where a residence was burnt down.

Break and enter There was a break and enter to a residence in Carlyle.

Failure to comply An individual was found to be failing to comply with the conditions of their release.

A youth was found to be failing to comply with their probation.

There is an ongoing investigation regarding someone possibly failing to comply with their release conditions.

Criminal harassment A report of criminal harassment was reported from Redvers.

False alarm There were two false alarms responded to during this time. One was in Carlyle and the other occurred in the Carlyle area.

Alcohol related of-

fences An impaired driver was stopped in Arcola. They tested 0.15 and 0.14, nearly twice the legal limit.

There is an investigation regarding liquor being given to a minor.

A 60-day suspension was given out by SGI for a roadside suspension of an intoxicated driver who was driving without a licence.

Property damage In the Carlyle area property damage was reported. RCMP were unable to locate the subjects involved.

Traffic offences Traffic members stopped someone with no registration for the trailer, no driver’s licence and with an obstructed licence plate.

For these offences the individual was given two tickets and a warning.

An individual was found to be driving with no insurance and with an obstructed licence plate.

“Just as a tip, if the licence plate is obstructed police wonder why?” Staff Sgt. Simons explained. “Did you just not clean it off or are you trying to hide the licence plate for some reason.

A vehicle was stopped for not having insurance, an unsecure load, and failure to produce registration.

There was also a total of seven other vehicles driving with no insurance.

One intersection offence took place during this time. The individual was fined $230.

A speeder was stopped and fined as well as given an inspection notice for excessive damage to their windshield.

Warnings were given out to drivers for excessive damage to windshields, brake lights that were not red, inadequate mud flaps, obstructed licence plates, inadequate headlamps, signal lights, window tint, failing to dim their bright lights, the licence plate not properly lit, and speedometers being “out.”

An individual was stopped and given warnings for fenders/mud flaps, head lights, tail lights, and their muffler.

There was a semi driver that was given $455 in fines: failing to document trip inspection, no “wide load” sign, and no permit for a wide load.

The two highest speeding tickets this week included one for $195 and one for $184.

An individual was driving erratically on a grid road. The driver was stopped and given a warning.

There was an individual who passed ve-

hicles on a double solid line. An off-duty member witnessed the action and contacted an on-duty member. The fine for this offence is $125.

There was a report of an individual with a learner’s licence driving without a licenced driver in the vehicle with them.

An individual was given a warning for driving on the highway in a distracting manner. This is doing anything that may distract another driver or a pedestrian. It is commonly referred to as a stunting ticket.

Nuisance RCMP are assisting the Town of Redvers regarding municipal bylaws.

Theft A reported theft under $5,000 was determined to be unfounded.

RCMP remind individuals that if someone says they have forgotten their wallet and you reply that they can pay you later, this is extending credit and is not theft. If someone is unable to pay, do not extend credit, and deal with the matter at the time.

Theft from a residence in Carlyle was determined to be related to the Mental Health Act. There was a theft of an iPad from a business.

Theft of a truck was reported. It was determined that it hadn’t been stolen, but rather another driver with the company had used it.

There was an attempted theft of a vehicle outside of a residence. The vehicle had been warming up in the cold. An individual was identified and is facing

PUBLIC HEARING Council will hold a public hearing for the Zoning Bylaw amendment on February 20, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. at the RM of Brock No. 64 office located at 790 Railway Ave, Kisbey, SK. The purpose of the public hearing is to hear any person or group that wants to comment on the proposed bylaws.

Council will also consider written comments received at the hearing (or delivered to the undersigned at the municipal office before the hearing).

Motor vehicle collision There was a collision near Stoughton. A semi lost a tire, which hit another semi and caused a chain reaction including a pickup truck also being damaged. There were two injuries reported with one being more serious, which was sustained by the semi driver who failed to wear his seatbelt.

Submitted by Myrna Olson Congrats to Jason and Rebecca White of Manor on the birth of a son on Jan. 4. He weighed 9 lbs 8oz. and has been named Rhett James.

Morris, Heather and Lexi Draper spent a week at Grand Palladium White Sands Resort about an hour out of Cancun. They were there to attend the wedding of Heather’s niece, Theresa Goebel to Sam Kosolofski. Other family members attending were Glen, Susan and Brandon Goebel of Regina, Susan Goebel of Saskatoon. The wedding was on Jan. 16 on the beach. The Drapers spent a day in Playa Del Carmen and a day in Tulum before returning home on Jan. 22.

Family Literacy Day was held at the Wawota Library on Jan. 31. It was from 1:30 -6:00 and had five stations of games and activities. It was an enjoyable time.

Garry Dickson, Bob and Linda Birnie have returned home after spending 5 weeks in Palm Springs, California. This is an annual holiday for them. They are joined by Ron and Judy Gray of Regina.

Some news from the holidayers: Don and Judy Steinke enjoyed a 10 day stay in Mexico; Jamie and Sydney Shire are also in Mexico for a holiday; Gordon and Val Van Dresar have returned home after spending several days in the Dominican Republic.

Happy birthday to Neil Dennis who celebrated his birthday on Jan. 30. Family and friends were invited to help him celebrate in Redvers.

Lea Kushner of Swift Current has been visiting with her parents, Denis and Norma Lamontagne.

Roy Borolotto spent several days last week attending continuing education at Ancient Spirals Retreat in Saskatoon.

Free Fishing Weekend for Family Day Kelly Running Observer Staff

For Saskatchewan Family Day, the government has organized a free fishing weekend, which means no licence is needed to enjoy a weekend of fishing; however fishing regulations and rules still apply.

Free fishing is avail-

able in Saskatchewan for the entire family day weekend: Feb. 17-19.

If interested but do not have the equipment or have never ice fished before the Moose Mountain Wildlife Federation will be hosting a free fishing day on Sunday, Feb. 18, at Kenosee Lake.

They will have fishing rods, gear, bait, shacks,

food, and drinks from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. according to their Facebook event page.

The event is open to all ages as a way to experience the excitement of ice fishing this winter.

Town Council meets pre-SUMA Lynne Bell

Carlyle Town Council held their regular bi-weekly meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 31.

Council’s next meeting will take place at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21 at the Carlyle Civic Centre.

This meeting is scheduled later in the month

due to the annual SUMA (Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association) convention in Regina, which the Mayor, the Town Administrator and some members of council will attend.

Feb. 4-7 in Regina.

Public Works Report Town of Carlyle Public Works Superintendent Todd Thompson gave an informal report to members of council regarding needed repairs to equipment and upcoming issues concerning the community’s infrastructure.

By Linda Wegner Early in my Christian walk I decided not to pray for patience and here’s why: patience is mostly developed through hardship. Even the Apostle Paul agrees with me (or more accurately, I agree with him): “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also, knowing that tribulation worketh patience.”

Romans 5:3 (AKJV). More about the glorying later.

You may justifiably disagree with me that it takes hard times to develop patience, because it’s true, some folks are simply more patient by nature; that deep willingness to wait for good results in a difficult situation, however, rarely comes easily to most of us. An on-line definition of patience is “the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or

suffering without getting angry or upset.” Oops, I’m still learning.

In looking for an example of patience, I don’t need to look further than out my living room window; after all, this is pet country.

There seem to be fewer and fewer of us folk who don’t own and walk dogs on a regular basis but I’ve learned a lot from simply watching and listening. For example, “heel” is a word I hear regularly, then watch as owners teach their animals to keep their safe and useful place.

Back to the part about glorying in tribulation. That lesson has taken a lot longer to learn but it’s been a valuable one: an attitude of surrender to the will of God, even when it hurts, develops genuine patience and willingness to let Him work out His

plan in His time.

There are immediate benefits, as well. In the Bible version I use most often, Solomon doesn’t actually use the word but in a newer version, the New Living Translation, his words go like this: “Patience can persuade a prince, and soft speech can break bones.” (Proverbs 25:15) Amen!

Mental Health : Bell Let’s Talk Day

On Jan. 31, it was Bell’s Let’s Talk Day. When it comes to Mental Health a lot of people look to doing meditation, using essential oils, exercising, and getting out into nature; but, what works for one person may not work for another.

Mental Health, although it Kelly Running Observer Staff should be maintained by using different coping mechanisms, such as taking time to yourself, enjoying stress relieving scents like eucalyptus oil, or going for a walk out in nature. Those aren’t always the solutions, some people need more and I think it’s important to remember that.

One of the biggest things I think people often overlook is that medication is a necessary route for many people and should not be shamed.

Oftentimes feelings of despair and anxiety is actually the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain and it becomes necessary to level out these chemicals and maintain a healthy balance.

A few years ago, my friend told me she was going to the doctor, that she wasn’t well and hadn’t been for a while. It wasn’t a lack of Vitamin D from not going outside, it wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy smelling scents that are supposed to help with anxiety, it was something that needed more.

Finding the right medication is important and the side effects can be difficult, but having people you can trust and talk to makes a big difference. There was a lot of talking that year.

A lot of allowing them to express their feelings and being receptive to them because oftentimes they bottle those feelings up and think they’re being ridiculous for actually saying how they’re feeling. They’ll worry about annoying you with what they have to say, but encourage them to talk and make time for them.

So, if someone comes to you to talk… be open. Be kind. Be supportive. And most importantly just be there. You don’t have to solve problems for them, you don’t have to tell them they’re strong, etc… you just have to be available to listen and remind them that they can always talk to you; that they’re not going through this alone and that they can call you anytime. That they’re not annoying you with their problems, which is often something that goes through someone’s mind when they’re looking to reach out. They often don’t want to bother anyone.

If you’re struggling with mental illness, there is someone out there that is willing to listen, and they’re not going to feel as though you’re bothering them. They will want for you to be better and to help you in any ways they can… just remember to be patient with them as well because they won’t always know what to say and they may even say the wrong things at times; but, keep explaining what’s going on and tell them when they say something that makes you feel off because they were just trying to help. Tell them what you need from them and they will be there.

Can you believe it?

If you were among the 100+ million that watched the Super Bowl you might have enjoyed a buffet of snacks, perhaps even the king of all Super Bowl treats, guacamole, since more avocados are sold in the week leading up to the big game than at any other time of the year.

Except that’s not true. Only 3-5% of avocados consumed anMy Outlook nually are purchased prior to the Shelley Luedtke Super Bowl.

Perhaps you gave thought to the women who might be in danger because Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest day of the year for violence against women.

Except that’s not true, either. This goes back 25 years when a coalition of women’s groups cited studies and pointed to increased intakes at women’s shelters on Super Bowl Sunday. Appearances on morning shows by psychologists seemed to support this awful finding. Until a reporter began fact checking and contacted the authors cited who said their research indicated nothing of the kind. Domestic violence rose during major holidays, with the highest intakes at shelters coming, not during the Super Bowl, but breaks in the school calendar such as Christmas and summer vacation.

Volumes have been written about the things we believe that simply aren’t true. Like bats are blind.

(They’re not.) Or that lobsters mate for life. (They don’t. We have the NBC show “Friends” to thank for a lot of people believing that one.) But hearing something often enough makes it easier to believe it must be true. Which is a tactic that has been used by advertisers all along. But it gets trickier when it’s not products being sold, but ideas and agendas.

Previously, false accounts, hoaxes and conspiracy theories have existed primarily on the fringes.

But we now find ourselves with the capacity to access a limitless amount of information in a confusing context of what might be true, and what might be dressed up to look real, but is intentionally misleading. And it’s coming through mainstream sources.

It may not be a big deal to believe something untrue about avocado consumption, but what about patterns of domestic violence? The groups involved in misinterpreting the data were accused of spreading the wrong message. It detracted attention away from the issue and the victims. Some groups became complicit in getting out an error-filled message--albeit for motives they saw as helping their cause.

We are now finding ourselves the targets of a digital flow of information that has proven less than accurate. Lawyers from three of the biggest inter-

net forces appeared before a Senate judiciary subcommittee to look at their role in the proliferation of false stories during the 2016 U.S. election. One acknowledged that more than 126 million of their users saw inflammatory ads paid for by a Kremlinlinked company, while the other two said more than 1,000 videos and 131,000 messages appeared on their sites uploaded by the same company.

Does it matter? Well, the more we see something the more likely we are to believe it. So if believability increases with exposure, we need to ask who is trying to win the day in forming our opinion of current issues…political parties…even governments? Then consider this. How likely are you to believe something if someone you know tells you it is so. 16% of Americans admitted to sharing a story on their social media they later realized was false. That’s the number that admitted it…and the number that realized at some point that the story was false. Most, it seems, don’t bother digging too deeply.

What is even more troubling is how young people are engaging with this information. A 2016 study found that students were ill equipped at evaluating the quality of online information. Researchers described their findings as “bleak” and “dismaying” and said most students had not been given any tools to examine the credibility of the information they were looking at. In fact, 80% of middle school students believed “sponsored content” was real.

Clearly we aren’t giving young people the assistance they need in navigating this--most likely because we struggle with it ourselves.

Brain scans show that when we understand or agree with a statement we get a hit of dopamine--a chemical released by the neurons that control the brain’s reward and pleasure centres. Conversely, trying to process a false or uncertain statement is linked to pain and disgust centres in the brain. Skepticism requires more work--and is simply harder for us to do. But it has to be done. We can no longer afford to take mental short cuts.

We can try and blame the internet giants for where we are but they are just one side of the equation. They provide the platform that dispenses the information but we are the ones who decide what we will look at, accept, and give credence to. The responsibility is ours to inquire and to challenge. To think. To reason. To put in the effort.

While believing incorrect data about the lifespan of a household fly won’t impact our lives tremendously, being swayed by intentionally misleading information about our political systems and social issues certainly can. It’s up to us to prove we are unwilling to be pawns in someone’s digital game, but instead are ready to step up and be the gatekeepers of the information that is going to drive our actions and shape our future. That’s my outlook.

Budget for devices Some of the costs for medical devices might be covered by provincial or private health insurance but you must apply and qualify. Canadian retailers sell walkers for starting at about $150 while mobility scooters sell for about $2,500**.

Wheelchairs range from a few hundred dollars to closer to $5,000 for motorized models. You can rent mobility devices as well***.

Also, when you care for an unwell person in their home, you may need to do some renovations to ensure safety and enable care.

You could spend $10,000 or more on a fully equipped hospital bed (they can be rented**** for $100 to $200 a month), bath lifts, ramps and other safety devices.

Cost of care Many government programs offer limited home care but you may need to pay privately to get all the help you need. Personal care workers cost upwards of $30 an hour while registered nurses charge up to $70 an hour. Getting a live-in caregiver is a big expense: expect to pay as much as $3,500 a month plus room and board.

Alternatively, your family member may need the kind of support available in long-term care. In Ontario ***** that runs about $1,800 to $2,600 a month. Many provinces offer subsidies for care, depending on your income.

Plan ahead Consider protecting yourself and fam-

ily members by getting longterm care insurance. It provides financial assistance to cover care – both at home or in a facility – and money for other costs related to care, including paying for caregiving by family members.

Always keep your receipts, as the cost of caregiving can be used for various income tax credits****** both federal and provincial.

Congratulations! If you’re worried about how your cat will react to the arrival of your new bundle of joy in the home, read on to find out how to prepare Mittens for her new family life.

First off, because cats are curious by nature, it’s important to let your feline companion explore the baby’s new bedroom in the weeks before the big arrival. Preventing her from entering now will just make her want to sneak in even more.

Once Baby is born, you may wish to ask someone you trust to bring home a blanket or item of clothing that’s been in contact with the child. This will get your cat used to the newcomer’s scent before they officially meet.

Finally, remember that the arrival of a new baby in the home will inevitably be stressful for your feline companion. Be patient, give her lots of affection,

and when Baby gets a bit bigger, let the two play to-

gether — under your close supervision, of course.

Carlyle Cougars clench important win and are in position to make playoffs Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle PureChem Cougars partnered with Carlyle Pharmasave on Friday, Feb. 2, with a chance to win $25,000.

A 50/50 draw was held at each home tournament prior to the Feb. 2 game to determine the contestants; Nathan Turko, Jake Big Eagle, and Darryl Sutherland took their turns attempting a shot on net, through the five hole, from the centre line. Big Eagle was the closest to making the shot, but in the end none of the contestants were able to win the big prize.

As a consolation Carlyle Pharmasave gave each contestant a $50 gift card.

“We were extremely happy to be able to do this with the Cougars for a second year,” Steve Schultz explained. “It’s a good way to get people talking about the Cougars and coming out to the games. We had a lot of people in the store, on Twitter all asking us when the chance to win was and they were all very excited about it.”

Dallas Lequyer with the PureChem Cougars added, “We really ap-

preciate the community support and it’s been great to be able to partner with Pharmasave this year and last year on something like this.”

Although those competing were disappointed to have missed, all three agreed that it was a fun experience to be able to try their hand at making such a difficult shot.

Vs Redvers Rockets recap The Carlyle PureChem Cougars hosted the Redvers Rockets on Tuesday, Jan. 30. The game was controlled early by the Rockets, while the PureChem Cougars pushed hard in the final period, but were unable to sway the momentum in their favour.

Redvers scored four goals in the first period, while Carlyle was only able to answer back with one by Branden Lequyer assisted by Tyler Fleck and Kelly Currie.

The second period saw both Redvers and Carlyle earn goals bringing the score to 2-5.

Brett Turgeon scored with seven seconds left in the second off assists

by Brent McLean and Nathan Heck.

The third period saw the PureChem Cougars battle hard with two more goals scored

to bring them up to 4 points for the night.

Goals were scored by Clayton Geiger off assists by Tyler Fleck and Blair Toms; and Brett Turgeon got his second of the night off assists by Zach Brown and Clayton Geiger. They were unable to stop the Rockets from scoring two goals in the third which resulted in a 4-7 loss for the PureChem Cougars.

Vs Arcola/Kisbey Combines recap The PureChem Cougars came out strong against the Arcola/Kisbey Combines on Friday, Feb. 2, however, with a 10-2 win.

The first period saw the PureChem Cougars continually find the net as 7 goals were posted.

Brent McLean started off the avalanche of goals off assists by Mark Shaw and Brett Turgeon.

Ben Johnstone earned the second off assists by Clayton Geiger and Tyler Fleck. Brett Turgeon scored one off Mark Shaw. Brayden Librion chalked up another goal off assists by Brent McLean and Joel Mack.

An evening to celebrate

Sociability and all things Scottish were celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 3 at Carlyle’s Robbie Burns Night festivities. A continuation of Alameda’s Robbie Burns Night, the event is organized by members of southeast Saskatchewan’s ABBA 15 Masonic Lodge. Robbie Burns Night celebrations usually follow a format which includes pipers, dancers, toasts to lads and lassies and the piping in of the iconic Scottish delicacy, haggis. In Carlyle, the iconic Scottish dish made its debut courtesy of Regan Miller (front) and piper David Kyle.

Piper David Kyle of Brandon made the trip to Carlyle to celebrate Robbie Burns Night.

Robbie Burns Night is a global celebration of the life of Scottish poet and lyricist, Robbie Burns (1759-1796). His legacy is usually commemorated on or near his January 25 birthday with an evening filled with all things Scottish. Here, dancer Madison Zandee of Estevan’s Drewitcz School of Dance entertains the 120 people in attendance.

Carlyle’s second annual Robbie Burns night celebration was held Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Carlyle Memorial Hall. Although attendees had the opportunity to sample haggis (pictured) the main meal was a roast beef supper prepared by David and Shelley Slykhuis.

Gray Cowan travelled to Estevan on Feb. 1 on business and he also attended the Saskatchewan Provincial Tankard where he enjoyed watching the some great curling, and visiting with some of the spectators.

On Feb. 2, Groundhog Day, it was reported that Willy DID NOT see his shadow. Thank goodness for that – this is supposed to mean that spring will soon be around the corner.

Leonard and Lil Patton attended the 15U Volleyball Tournament in Oxbow over the weekend (Feb.3-4) where they watched their granddaughter Cordelia Patton participate in the tournament.

Keagan Patton and his team the Oxbow Jr. Atom Huskies participated in the Melita Atom Hockey Tournament where they were successful in winning the event. Congratulations boys.

Edgar and Shirley Bendtsen spent the past weekend (Feb. 3 to 4) in Oxbow where they

watched their granddaughter Jorja (daughter of Lloyd and Tara Bendtsen) who plays volleyball with the Carlyle Red Coat Rebels compete in the 15U Tournament. They won the gold medal against the Oxbow Knights.

Congratulations Jorja and team.

Visiting with Bob and Cecille Harrison over the weekend (Feb. 2 to 4) was daughter Betty-Jo and her husband Aaron DeJong (Lashburn, SK). They all took in the activities at the Alida Rink and watched Aaron participate in the bonspiel.

Wow, another busy and successful time at the Alida Rink this past weekend (Feb. 2 to 3). It was the Alida Oilmen’s Bonspiel being held with only 7 teams participating. It may have been a low number of competitors, but they were a very enthusiastic bunch of curlers. Maybe next year we’ll see a larger number. I’m sure the cold weather had something to do with the numbers

being down as well as it being back after a couple years break, due to the 2014 flood damage done to the curling area.

The bonspiel began Friday evening with a draw at 6:00 pm. which was followed by two draws at 8:00 pm. The Evening entertainment was enjoyed by all who were present until well into the wee hours of the morning. Breakfast was served to over 30 on Saturday morning and curling was soon in full swing by 9:00 am. The rink was very active throughout the day where everyone enjoyed watching curling, the rink food, participating in a game or two of Bridge, entering the many raffle draws and even watching the younger ones on the skating ice. A delicious Beef/Ham supper was later served to approximately 80 which included the curlers, their family and others.

Band Trip The band students will be participating in a concert and workshop tour to Edmonton from February 8-11. They are joining with band students from Redvers, Oxbow, and Alameda.

They will be performing concerts in Edmonton schools, and West Edmonton Mall, and having a workshop at a high school in Namao, AB. They will also be attending an Edmonton Oil Kings hockey game at the new Rogers Centre Arena. They will have a great time.

The basketball season has now started and a busy season is ahead for the Sr. Boys. Practices run almost every Monday and Wednesday and tournaments are slotted in for Norquay, Stoughton, Estevan, Oxbow, Rocanville, Gravelbourg, and Davidson. The completion of the season will be the SHSAA playoffs starting with Conferences in March and concluding with Hoopla on March 23rd and 24th!

This past week I have spent glued to the TV watching the Tournament of Hearts as much as possible. In-between these scheduled games I found the different Provincial Tankards being televised – which again I also enjoyed watching.

I must say that not al-

ways did the team I was cheering for come out on top – but gosh the curling was interesting. Of course I also spent time at our local rink watching the Alida Oilmen’s bonspiel and there too enjoyed the games as much as I was able to

watch. Now the Winter Olympics will be in full swing starting this weekend (Feb. 9) and again I’ll enjoy watching more curling, as well as all the other winter sports.

Hope you are also enjoying these sports on television as much as I do.

Atom Cougars nearing end of regular season Tammie Riddell Sports Contributor On Tuesday, January 30, the Cougars traveled to Lampman to play the Imperials. The mid week evening game was a change for these boys.

They played well, skated hard and had some great shots on their goalie.

The final score was 18-0,

for the cats!

On Wednesday, January 31, the Wawota Flyers headed south on highway 9 to battle the Cougars in our barn.

This was a fantastic game with great shots, quick saves, fast skating and loud cheering. The Flyers were the first to hit the score board, end-

ing the first period with a 2-0 lead. The Flyers continued their attack on the Cougars in the second, scoring two more goals. The Cougars fought hard and continued to pebble the Flyers goalie, finally the rubber prickled past the netminder. The second period ended with a 4-1

lead by the Flyers. The Cougars scored quickly in the third to cut the lead in half. Wawota answered back to increase the lead. Carlyle then score two more goals to make this game a nail biter. With the last minute in the third and to make this game more entertaining, the Cougars pulled their goalie to add the extra attacker. The Cougars fought hard, but the Flyers managed to defend the lead and win the game

Angele Marie Augustine Gofflot 1933 - 2018

Angele Gof�lot beloved Sister and Aunt passed away at Redvers Haven in Redvers, SK. On Friday, January 19 at the age of 85.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her sister Lucienne Thomas, brother Albert Gof�lot, �ive nieces Loretta Toms, Marilyn Dangstrop, Stella Issac, Theresa Frison, Lynn Gof�lot and their families.

She grew up on the family farm north of Storthoaks, attended Bolton Country School from grades 1- 8. When her parents moved to town she moved with them and stayed there until her 80th year. While in Storthoaks she did a lot of babysitting for many families, she also had a big garden to tend to. She was a dedicated CWL member for years. She moved to the Sunset Haven in Carnduff then to the Redvers Haven until her passing.

Everyone will remember her for her Giggle and Big Smile. She will remain Forever in our Hearts.

Thank You The family of Angele Gof�lot wishes to extend their sincere Thank You and gratitude for the many acts of kindness at the time of her passing. Thank you to the Family and Friends who visited, sent �lowers, cards, messages, food, and masses, and to those who attended the Funeral. Heartfelt Thanks to Rev. Wilfred Calinawan for the beautiful service. Leta Brisbois for providing the organ accompaniment, Dustin Hall for singing and Hall Funeral Service for their assistance.

Pearl Wilson 1924 - 2018

Gladys Pearl Wilson passed away peacefully in her 94th year, on 18th of January ,2018 at Deer View Lodge Nursing Home in Wawota, Saskatchewan.

Pearl was born in Wolseley at her grandparents’ home, �irst child of Elizabeth and John Lawrysyn. Her home was in Kipling where she lived with her parents and three brothers.

After completing her schooling, she attended Normal School in Regina and pursued her dream of becoming a teacher. Her �irst teaching job was at a country school, Arundel. In 1945 she married Lloyd Wilson, a local farmer. She accepted a teaching position as Helping Teacher in the Arcola School Unit and later taught in Glen Adelaide and Wauchope schools. She spent the �inal years of her teaching career in Wawota High School where she was vice principal until her retirement.

Pearl and her husband, Lloyd raised their two children, John and Bonnie on their farm six miles south of Wawota and later moved to the town in 1970.

Pearl had a passion for Shakespeare and live theatre and enjoyed summer trips to Stratford, Ontario where she attended a marathon of plays. She enjoyed traveling and visited many countries. She was a devoted Blue Jays fan. Her �lower garden always looked immaculate in the summer with pansies, peonies and petunias in full bloom. Pearl loved to bake and made an exceptional apple pie. She enjoyed volunteering in her community.

Pearl entered Deer View Lodge in December of 2009 and was well cared for until her passing.

Pearl is predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth and John; in–laws (Grace & Andy) of Wawota; husband Lloyd (2006); son-in-law , Ken Ross (2017) of London, Ontario ; brothers: Bud (Edna) and John, all of Kipling.

Pearl out-lived all of Lloyd’s siblings and their spouses; Sister-in-law, Ruby (Norman) Jane of Wawota. Brothers-in-law, Henry (Marie) of Delta, B.C.; Rae (Jenny) of Port Moody, B.C., George (Vivian) of Wawota, Carl of Wawota.

She is lovingly survived by her son John (Joan) Wilson of Wawota , her daughter Bonnie Wilson – Ross of London ,Ontario. She loved her four grandchildren, Glenn ( Katie) Wilson of Wawota , Dennis Wilson of Regina ,Graham of Halifax, N.S., Elizabeth of London, Ontario . she was so proud to be great grandma to Gavin Wilson of Regina. Her brother, Dennis (Freda) of Regina and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Pearl’s life will be held on (Saturday), the 10th of February, 2018 at 2:00 at the Wawota Free Methodist Church with Pastors Kevin and Beverly Kay of�iciating .

A luncheon and time of fellowship will be held in the Cannington Wing, following the service.

Internment in the Cannington Community Cemetery.

In lieu of �lowers , donations in Pearl’s memory may be made to the Cannington Community Cemetery C/O Anita Cudmore, Box 247, Wawota , Sask. SOG 5AO Pearl’s family would like to thank all the Deer View Lodge staff for the wonderful care Pearl received on a daily basis.

Pee Wee Cougars up a goal in provincial play after game 1 Submitted The Cougars were on the ice January 14, the first time since their last game December 13th.

The team faced the Kipling Royals, a team that had beaten and tied the Cougars during their previous two meetings.

The extended break was exactly what the team needed as they came out flying scoring three first period goals by Tyrell Dixon, Blake Robertson

and Max Waugh (assists to Walker Porter, Blake Robertson, Max Waugh and Samantha Colpitts).

The Cougars outshot the Royals 18 to 3 in the first period. The second period was a little different as the Royals outshot the Cougars 17 to 11 but it was the Cougars that did all the scoring.

Mason Barta and Jakson Humphries (assist Chase Robertson) scored giving the Cougars a 5

to 0 lead heading into the third period of play.

The Cougars would score one more in the third (Max Waugh assists from Tyrell Dixon and Blake Robertson) and Ty Fehrenbach would stop all 28 shots he faced for the shut out. The win improved the Cougars to 8-1-1.

Next action for the Cougars was against Oxbow on January 18th.

game the Cougars put plenty of pressure on the Huskies net. The Oxbow goalie played very strong but Kale Arndt scored (assist to Mason Barta) to tie the game at one after the first period of play. The Cougars scored twice more in the second on goals by Chase Robertson (assist Walker Porter) and Jakson Humphries (assist Chase Robertson) and headed into the third with a 3 to 1 lead. It would be the Huskies that came out flying to start the third scoring two quick goals to tie the game.

But Max Waugh scored two quick goals (assist to Tyrell Dixon) and Mitch Himmelspeck would score one more (assist to Chase Robertson) to give them a three goal lead.

The Huskies would score one late but the Cougars would hold on for a 6 to 4 victory.

January 20th the Cougars were back in action facing a very tough Redvers Rockets team.

The Cougars ran into a very strong goaltender and the score was 0 to 0 even though the Cougars outshot them 14 to 2. The Cougars would be outshot in the second 1312 but were able to score three goals. Two goals by Chase Robertson (assist Mitch Himmelspeck)

and Max Waugh with the other (assists to Tyrell Dixon and Blake Robertson). Cougars would head into the third period with a 3-0 lead. The Cougars would throw 18 more shots on net and in return they got two goals by Mitch Himmelspeck (assists to Chase Robertson and Jakson Humphries) and Grady Benjamin (assist to Max Waugh). The final score would be 5-0 with Ty Fehrenbach only having to make 19 saves for the shutout. The Cougars record sits at 10-1-1.

The Cougars next league action would be January 25 as they faced the Arcola-Lampman Combines. The Cougars would control play from start to finish resulting in a 13-0 score. The Combines would only take 17 shots on the Cougars net, as the Cougar offensive and defense took total control of the game. With only five games remaining in the regular season, the Cougars sit in first place with a record of 11-1-1.

February 3 would see the Cougars once again host the Arcola- Lampman Combines and just like the last game the Cougars would dominate from start to finish. The Cougars would score 8 in the first, 6 in the second

and 5 more in the third.

They would go on to a 19 to 1 victory putting their record at 12-1-1.

February 4 saw the Cougars travel to Montmarte (Quad Town) to play their first game of a two game total point provincial series. The Cougars played a very dominate first period scoring four goals – Tyrell Dixon (assists to Kaden Piper and Max Waugh), Chase Robertson (assist Porter Barnett), Tyrell Dixon (assists to Blake Robertson and Turner Knockaert) and Turner Knockaert (assist Tyrell Dixon). The Cougars would come out flat in the second and the Quad Town squad would score 30 seconds into the period. The second period would end being 4-1 for the Cougars but the Quad Town squad would get all the bounces in the third. Quad Town would score two more and the game would end up being 4-3 in favor of the Cougars.

The Cougars threw lots of shots at the Quad Town net but didn’t get the bounces they were hoping for. The Cougars now head home with a one goal lead with the second game being played in Carlyle on February 18 at 5 pm.
