Generous donors “Fill a Fire Truck” What began as a plan to fill a sleigh full of toys for area kids in need resulted in a fire truck filled with Christmas gifts, thanks to local volunteers and donors - all of it in support of Carlyle’s Bargain Shop Toy Drive.

On Saturday, Dec. 9, the area in front of Carlyle’s The Bargain Shop was filled volunteers from Carlyle Fire and Rescue, Southern Plains Co-op, Bear Claw Casino and Hotel, Cornerstone Family and Youth and Carlyle’s The Bargain Shop. The street party complete with a fire pit for roasting marshmallows, music courtesy of DJ Trevor Gould, a fire truck and a visit from Santa Claus and his elves - resulted in donations of over $5,300 worth of toys and over $650 in cash for the CFY Toy Drive.

Bargain Shop manager Shannon MacLeod says, “It was an amazing day and we are so grateful to everyone who came out today to bring some Christmas joy to kids in this part of Saskatchewan.”

“We live in an amazing community and the list of generous people who came out to give today is inspiring and

overwhelming.”

“A huge thank you to all the volunteers today - from Carlyle Fire and Rescue - chief Don Van Meer, Travis Van Meer, Adam Bee, Kim Penny and the firefighter spouse support,” adds MacLeod. “ Debbie and her elves from Southern Plains Co-op were here, Armanda and Jonathon from Bear Claw Casino and Hotel, Jenn and her large group of elves from Cornerstone Family and Youth, Jim Merkel, DJ Trevor Gould and our staff here at the store, who are behind the toy drive every year in every way.”

Bargain Shop staffer Val Purser says of working in the store during the event: “It was just an awesome day. People are so generous.”

Purser’s co-worker Betty Jack had the day off, but attended the event in order to make her donation to the toy drive that day.

“It just warms my heart to see so many giving people,” says Jack.

“It really does. And it’s what the Christmas spirit is all about.”

Cowgirl Cassidy: Weber wows the rodeo world Lynne Bell

Fourteen-year-old Cassidy Weber has already amassed a long list of awards and accomplishments during her rodeo career, whch began when she was just 11. Weber, who balances her grade nine studies at Manor School with a busy training and competition schedule, recently won the breakaway and pole bending events during her first year of senior competition at Agribition in Regina, making her the only competitor in her class this year to win two events.

At the Canadian Finals in Nanton, Alberta, Weber won the Junior All Around Cowgirl title.

And in the Saskatchewan High School Rodeo standings, she made the top four in barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway and goat tying.

This propelled her into national competition, where she was crowned Canadian Junior All Around Champion.

“Before this, I did figure skating,” says Weber. “I was top in the province when I was 10, but it got to be too extreme. I didn’t like it anymore and my mom used to rodeo, so I tried that instead.”

“Both sports require mental focus and competitiveness, so in that way, it was a pretty smooth transition,” she says.

“I’ve actually ridden since I was about four years old,” says Weber.

“We had old horses that my mom grew up with and I always went to one local jackpot a year.

I think I rode at Manor Rodeo when I was about four.”

“After I finished skating, I competed in jackpots and local stuff and I found roping and barrels came really naturally to me. After jackpots, my first big non-local rodeo was the Manitoba High School Rodeo

in Pierson, Manitoba.”

“I won the barrel racing there and it was kind of a surprise - especially to me - because I won against the hometown favourite,” says Weber. “I was only 11 years-old and it was my first big win. I was really surprised and excited and after that, I knew rodeo was for me.”

“Then I started roping. I went to every clinic and rope school I could and I learned the techniques and the finer points. I loved it.”

Now Weber competes in breakaway, barrels, team-roping, goat tying and pole bending events and in just three years, has won numerous awards on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border.

Along with her national title, Weber has earned awards throughout Canada as well as in the United States, travelling to Arizona, Montana, North Dakota, Nevada, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Wyoming.

“It’s my whole summer,” she says. “In the off-season in the winter, I get up, do chores, go to school and then after school, I ride from about 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.”

“I have two horses,” she says. “Hickory is my main one and she does barrels, poles and goats.

Scarface is awesome he’s my rope horse and I ride him for breakaway and team roping.

So many people have offered to buy him, but he’s not for sale.”

At Regina’s Agribition SHSRA (Saskatchewan High School Rodeo Association) rodeo, Weber moved from junior competition to competing at the senior level with high school students up to age 18.

“This year, I was a rookie again,” she says.

“It was my third Agribition, but my first year as a senior. I was a 14-yearold competing against 18-year-olds, but it worked out really well for me.”

“I won first this year in pole bending and breakaway at Agribition.

I was the only one in my category to win two events and that’s huge, so I’m really happy that it went so well.”

Weber is also a four-time Junior All Around Champion and Junior Team Roping Champion, Junior Barrel Racing Champion, and Junior Trail Course Champion in the Northern Plains Little Britches Spring Series. She is the National Junior High School Rodeo Association’s World Finals qualifier in breakaway, roping, ribbon roping, barrel racing, pole bending and goat tying.

In addition, she is the 2017 National Little Britches Rodeo Association World Finals qualifier in barrel racing, pole bending, trail course, team roping, ribbon roping and breakaway roping.

While this is not a full list of her many accomplishments witin the rodeo arena, Weber says the sport has also taught her a lot out of the ring.

“Rodeo has taught me that life is not perfect or even perfect every time I compete, but I’ve learned to keep going and to get back up and try harder the next time.”

“I’ve been at rodeos when I’ve been so sick that I make my run, throw up, make my run and come back again.” says Weber. “Those times, I’ve been so sick, but if I didn’t go and at least try and compete, I’d hate myself.’

“So I go and I’m always glad I did.”

Weber says this year’s performance at Agribition was especially sweet, because she overcame injuries and surgery in the run-up to this year’s rodeo in Regina.

“Last year was not my best year,” she says.

“So to come back this year was awesome.”

“My family and Manor School are so supportive of me and I’m really grateful to them,” she says. “My sister Ashley is 11 and she’s always there when I compete. She’s my biggest supporter but she always pushes me to go forward, so she’s my toughest competition, too.”

“Rodeo is part of who I am. My whole life is my horses and I love it.”

Cassidy Weber has earned several awards as a rodeo competitor at events on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border. The 14-year-old (pictured right) competes in breakaway, barrels, team roping, goat tying and pole bending and says, “ My whole life is just my horses and I love it.”

Sask ICE Unit presents in Carlyle: Importance of educating youth online Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Saskatchewan Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit presented in Carlyle at the Elementary School on Wednesday, Dec. 6, to conduct an informational session for parents and guardians regarding risks online.

The Unit includes a Sr. Crown Prosecutor dedicated to their efforts – Loreley Berra, and includes funding through the RCMP, Prince Albert Police Services, Regina Police Services, and Saskatoon Police Services.

Conducting the presentation was Cpl. Cory Patterson with the RCMP and Det. Cst. Peter Froh with Regina Police Services.

“In this day and age we are so reliant on technology and if your youth has unfettered access to the internet it does come with some bad,” Cpl. Patterson explained.

The Sask ICE Unit was created in 2009, which dedicates a total of eight investigators to the entire province of 1.56 million people. It was created to investigate child pornography, child exploitation, and luring over the internet, and practicing both Proactive and Reactive investigations.

“It’s so easy today to take a picture and share it,” Patterson stated, then defining the definition of child pornography under the Canadian Criminal Code Sec 163.1 (1): “a photographic, film, video, or other visual representation, whether or not it was made by electronic or mechanical means, (i) shows a person who is or is depicted as being under the age of 18 years and is engaged in or depicted as engaged in explicit

sexual activity, or (ii) the dominant characteristic of which is the depiction, for sexual purpose, of a sexual organ or the anal region of a person under the age of 18 years;” The Canadian Criminal Code goes on to include any written material or audio material of this kind as well.

Thus, if a youth takes a photo and shares it this is seen as three offences: making, distributing, and possessing child pornography.

“Can we charge kids for this? Yes. Do we want to?

No. But, we need kids to understand that this is black and white under the Criminal Code,” Patterson stated.

“They also have to understand that once something is sent out, it’s never really gone. Whether posted to the internet or sent through SnapChat – there’s a nifty feature on phones to take a picture of your screen. So, whatever your sending can’t be taken back. Once you send a picture you lose control of it.

You can do your best to get it back, but there’s always a copy somewhere.”

Children are willingly participating in online conversations as a way to explore their sexuality, romantic relationships, and as attention seeking behaviour.

“The problem is that on the internet people can be anybody and once they have an image they will say ‘Now I’ve got you,’ and request to be sent more photos or videos, or else they’ll post what you sent them,” Patterson stated. “Research is also showing that boys aged 14-18 are starting to show predatory behaviour in their interactions on the internet like that and if they’re never stopped and told that’s wrong, they will continue to do it.”

Not too late for influenza immunization

“Kids are naturally trusting and predators are master manipulators – it can literally be anyone on the other end. You can’t trust anybody online.”

Patterson and Froh then showed a video of a photo being shared on the internet in 90 seconds, the same amount of time it takes for a Polaroid photo (an “instant” photo) to develop. During the time it took for the Polaroid to develop, the photo online had reached 21 different countries.

What can parents do?

Take note of your child’s behaviour, interests, and friends.

“Also lead by example,” Patterson said. “I have a rule that they can look at my phone anytime and I can look at theirs. They are also not allowed to have their phones in the bathroom or bedroom and must be on the charging station at 9 p.m. Also, everyday at supper we ask the kids to tell us one good thing they’ve done today. Never be satisfied with ‘nothing’ or ‘everything’s fine.’”

“Have a conversation with them. Explain the risks and tell them what’s going on out there; be supportive and understanding.”

Patterson and Froh also added that DNA and fingerprints are unique to a person. Online, every single electronic file created has a digital fingerprint.

“This allows investigators to track a file with a ‘hash value,’” Froh explained. “While file sharing that hash value guarantees that file is the file they are downloading – whether it’s music, movies, or child pornography. More people are being charged and convicted for child pornography than drugs.”

“They can be anyone. There is no way to stereotype or pick them out of a crowd.”

The Math 9 students at Gordon F. Kells High School participated in an Hour of Code on Wednesday, Dec. 6. The directive was to help students learn the basics of coding in the field of Computer Science.

It is a worldwide effort which focuses on an hour of code one day out of Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 4-10).

“We’ve been coding and are familiar with it, but today is about them exploring something new and learning something

different,” teacher Amy Rutten says. “Their project outside of Hour of Code is do design a multilevel game for a grade 1 or 2 to play.”

“What’s cool about this Hour of Code is that it’s worldwide. There’s not enough kids and schools doing this, coding is everywhere now because everything is done on the computer.

So, I use it as an extension activity in Math 9, it’s the only class I have which applies to the curriculum, but it’s been a great thing. It motivates them, once they get their math done then they get to work on it or between

units I give them time to work on it. Coding is really algebraic thinking and reasoning.”

On the Hour of Code website it states that all students should have the opportunity to learn about computer science which is routed in problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st century career path.

In addition to the Grade 9 Math class, anyone interested in coding from grade 6 to 12 were encouraged to log on for an Hour of Code and learn what it is.

Weekly RCMP report Lynne Bell

The Carlyle RCMP detachment dealt with several files from Thursday, Nov. 30 to Thursday, Dec. 7.

“This week, we were pleased to welcome RCMP Corporal Cory Patterson and Detective Constable Peter Froh from Regina Police Services for an important presentation at Carlyle Elementary School,” says Corporal James Barnett of the Carlyle RCMP detachment.

“We’s also like to extend a thank you to CES Principal Tyler Fehrenbach for his involvement in bringing this presentation to Carlyle.”

“Both of these officers work in Saskatchewan’s Integrated Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit,” explains Barnett.

“As a police officer and a parent, I was impressed by the presentation and found it very informative. These officers discussed child safety, the dangers of social media and internet sites, the exploitation of children within our province and within Canada, and most importantly, what parents and community members need to know, especially with regards to the possible dangers to children that accompany technology.”

“This information is important for all parents, grandparents and caregivers. If anyone in the community was unable to attend and has any questions or concerns, please contact me at the Carlyle detachment.”

Two frivolous calls were made to the 911 emergency number this week. The RCMP reminds members of the public that 911 is to be used for emergency purposes only.

Alcohol-related offences An impaired individual in the Arcola area was arrested as a result of some suspicious activity. This person also obstructed the subsequent police investigation into this matter.

This week, members dealt with a significant increase in drivers travelling with open liquor in their vehicles.

A motorist received a three-day suspension.

Animal calls Police responded to a reported sighting of a large cat within the Village of Manor.

Arrests An individual was arrested by Carlyle RCMP after they escaped custody in Regina.

Assistance Carlyle RCMP provided assistance to both Calgary City Police and the Yorkton RCMP detachment regarding two separate matters.

Members assisted the Saskatchewan Crown Prosecutor’s Office by serving a subpoena.

Criminal harassment RCMP received a call regarding a possible case of criminal harass-

ment within the detachment area.

Failure to comply One individual failed to comply with their probation order.

Mental Health Act Police dealt with two files under the Mental Health Act this week.

Mischief Police received two calls reporting suspected acts of mischief in the detachment area.

Theft RCMP are currently investigating the theft of a weapon from a truck in a rural area near Arcola.

Traffic offences/Collisions A motorist collided with a dog on Hwy 9 near Carlyle. The driver was shaken, but sustained no major injuries.

RCMP responded to a report of an erratic driver near Kisbey. This individual was thought to be impaired, but instead was found to be texting while driving.

Members of the Carlyle detachment remind motorists that distracted driving of any kind and/ or driving with undue care and attention not only carries penalites, but can also lead to tragic outcomes.

This week, members dealt with motorists failing to stop at posted stop signs, motor vehicle insurance violations and licence and registration violations. Police also issued several speeding tickets throughout the detachment area. Carlyle RCMP members remind motorists to drive with road and weather conditions in mind at all times, but especially during winter.

Police issued several inspection tickets and/ or warnings, including: cracked windshields and burned out headlights and tail lights, the latter of which can often go out when outdoor temperatures change.

Alida News First off I’d like to apologize to the faithful readers of my column, you often do let me know that my column didn’t make into the paper and wonder why.

I too realized that once again my column wasn’t in the paper last week.

As to why – well that I can’t answer, I do know that I did get it sent on Monday morning – thanks to a friend for doing it for me as my computer was out of data, (guess it’s still floating in cyberspace). The Mosaic Meal (Potluck) will again be held on the last day before the break, Friday, December 22nd. Each student is asked to bring enough food for 5 - 6 people according to the grade’s category.

The food is to be brought on the Wednesday, between 11:30 AM and 11:55 AM. Warming up the food at school is not possible, so please bring it ready to serve. The meal starts at noon. The categories are: Grade 7, Chinese food; Grade 8, Mexican food; Grade 9, Italian food; Grade 10, Ukrainian food; Grade 11, appetizers; Grade 12, desserts; Grade 7-12 Filipino students, Filipino food. Please remember to avoid nuts in your meal preparations. Food Bank donations have also started to come in. The class which brings in the most food items, eats first at the Mosaic Meal. Last year, G.F. Kells High School donated over 5500 items to the Food Bank through this campaign. This year’s goal is 6000 items. The most needed food items include: peanut butter, canned meats, canned fish, all kinds of beans, powdered or canned milk, and canned vegetables and fruits.

GFK Student Leadership Team is starting its annual 12 Days of Christmas! Students will be busy unwrapping presents, decorating cookies, naming that tune, building gingerbread houses, and much, much more. Be sure to mark Friday, December 15th, on your calendar; it is their pancake breakfast and P.J. day. The pancake breakfast is for students and their families.

Dale, Linda and Kris Potapinski spent the weekend in Winnipeg where they welcomed their new granddaughter, Evelyn Lorrae, who arrived safe and sound on Dec. 1, daughter of Barry and Tam and baby sisiter for Claire and Lyhla. They spent time visiting with the family and becoming acquainted with the new baby and enjoying special playtime with the big sisters. Congratulations and best wishes to everyone.

Attending the Redvers Drama Dinner Theater on Dec. 2 were Tim and Shelly Cowan, Neil and Melissa Gervais, Parry and Lynette Peet, Margaret Peet and Melynda Charles. They reported having a good time and enjoyed the play.

On Dec. 4 Edel Cowan accompanied Shelly and Ainsley Cowan to Estevan where they visited with Kelsey Rydberg and Lacie Nilsen and to help the girls set up and arrange things at Kelsey’s store “Soul Hideout” on 12th Avenue.

Alida is preparing for their annual Old Fashioned Christmas Concert again this year. There is always lots of beautiful music

and songs being sung by both adults and children of the community.

Puzzled

The other day I came across some detective riddles, which transported me back to elementary school. I remember trying to solve them on the bus rides home or at recesses with my friend, Kyle.

“Two women went to a restaurant. They both ordered ice tea. One of them was very thirsty and drank very fast. She had five Kelly Running glasses during the time that the Observer Staff other drank only one. Tragically the one drinking slowly died, while the other stayed alive. It turned out the drinks they were served contained poison. How is it possible the girl who drank more survived?” . . .

“The poison was contained in the ice. The ice in the tea of the girl who drank fast didn’t have time to melt. But the ice cubes in the other girl’s drink, melted, releasing the poison into her tea.”

OR “The detective was sitting at his fire place when a snowball was thrown, crashing through his window.

He ran to the window and saw three neighbourhood boys, brothers, running away: Sam Blacksmith, Peter Blacksmith, and Mark Blacksmith. The next day a paper note was left on the detective’s door.

There it was written: ‘? Blacksmith. He threw the snowball.’ The detective knew immediately which brother to question. Who threw the snowball?” . . .

“The symbol ‘?’ is a Question Mark, so ‘Question Mark Blacksmith. He threw the snowball.’”

I think I liked the riddles because they made you really pay attention and think. I liked trying to figure things out. I knew there would be some kind of trick in them and it was always entertaining, and sometimes frustrating, as I attempted to figure out the solutions to the riddles.

The other day, I went online and was looking for something to write on when I remembered these little riddles. I got lost on the internet for a little bit reading through and attempting to solve the riddles.

Some of them I remembered from those detective riddle books from elementary school while others were new.

There were other puzzles that I really liked when I was little as well, but I remembered them being extremely difficult.

“There are five houses in a row. Each is a different colour and has a different owner who has a different pet, drinks a different beverage, and plays a different instrument.”

It is a series of logical steps: 1. The Englishman lives in a red house. 2. The Spaniard owns a dog – which means the Englishman doesn’t own a dog and the Spaniard lives in a house that’s not red… Each line gives you just a little bit more information to figure out the final questions. 3. Coffee is drunk in the green house. 4. The Ukrainian drinks tea. 5. The green house is immediately to the right of the ivory house. 6. The harmonica player owns snails. 7. The trumpet is played in the yellow house. 8. Milk is drunk in the middle house. 9. The Norwegian lives in the first house. 10. The trumpet is played next to the house where the horse is kept. 11. The man who plays piano lives next to the man who owns a fox. 12. The tuba player drinks orange juice. 13. The Japanese man plays the banjo. 14. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house. Based on this information, determine: 1. In which house is water the beverage? 2. Who has a pet bear?

This puzzle was elusive to me for many years, but I recently solved it about six months ago… however, looking at it again I would need to sit down and go through it all for the answer. Maybe check back with me next week.

But, despite the puzzles taking up time and being challenging I’ve always really enjoyed doing them.

Heart of the Moose Mountains

The size of the season They are available all the time but I try to be very good and think about them only at this time of year. At the risk of sounding too much like a product promotion, I can’t wait to sink my teeth into a Toblerone, the delicious Swiss chocolate bar in its distinctive triangular peaks. It’s been around for more than 100 years and was ranked #3 in Time Magazine’s My Outlook “Most Influential Candy Bars of Shelley Luedtke All Time” story. (#1 was Kit Kat).

Toblerone was invented by Theodor Tobler and Emil Baumann who put nougat, almonds and honey inside their famous chocolate, making it the first chocolate bar to debut with a filling. Its unique triangle peaks was marketing genius since the treat stood taller than other chocolate bars and the thin, triangular tubes in which it was packaged were easily spotted. In later years a white chocolate version was introduced, as well as ones featuring fruit and nuts. I guess I am a purist--I love the original milk chocolate variety.

But something happened last year to the Toblerone: it was downsized. The triangles were reconfigured to make the peaks slimmer and the valleys in between wider. Same price. Less chocolate.

The manufacturer said they had no choice due to the rising costs of the ingredients, however many consumers were pretty upset and expressed their displeasure with the new design. It tasted the same, but its size and shape had changed. It was different, and people didn’t like it. They wanted what they were used to getting.

It opened the door, and a legal battle, to a competitor in Britain who attempted to lure disgruntled Toblerone fans over to their similarly shaped…but larger…Twin Peaks. Early indications suggest success.

Products are downsized all the time but when favourite holiday treats are affected it tends to spark quite the response. Like when it was announced

that the Chocolate Orange would be reduced from 175 grams to 157; or when the volume of the Quality Street tin shrunk by 40 grams. A furor arose. Over chocolate. And candy. Don’t mess with the products we associate with this time of year. We look forward to them and don’t want to be disappointed by getting less than we expect We were privileged to welcome a social worker named Sidonia into our home after we adopted our daughters from Romania. She was a warm, gracious woman who had lived through decades of difficulty and upheaval in the eastern European country.

Amongst the many conversations we had with her I am often reminded of one in particular when December rolls around. When her children were young she wanted to surprise them Christmas morning with a little bit of candy. Upon hearing there might be some arriving at a shop in her town of Timisoara she joined an ever-growing line-up of people willing to spend some of their limited income hoping to bring the rare treat home. Sidonia stood in line for several hours only to find out the supply of candy had run out before she was able to make a purchase.

When I see store aisles overflowing with Christmas candy, or hear our complaints at how treats have been downsized, my thoughts turn to Sidonia and her simple desire to buy a little treat for her children…and was denied.

The list of places that won’t have any Christmas candy--or anything else for that matter--is long. It’s not that we have to deny ourselves the things we enjoy this time of year, but it does mean we need to gather a little perspective. Perhaps the best way to counteract our feelings toward downsizing is to remind ourselves that in so many ways we are leading super sized lives. Not just because of what we can have, but by the very fact that we know it so well we can recognize when it has been changed.

As we enjoy our favourite treats…not to mention our daily bread…we must admit we first had to know what it was…to know what we might be missing.

That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money

More Canadians are retiring with debt Most people know that they should be debt free by the time they hit retirement, yet many still carry large mortgages, lines of credit and other kinds of leverage. According to Statistics Canada, 34% of retired people over 55 are still carrying debt*, while a 2017 Equifax Canada report found seniors are increasing their debt loads at a much faster pace than other Canadians.

“That’s a problem for people who can’t keep up with their debt load and are forced to curtail their retirement dreams,” says Duane Bentley, Investors Group Vice-President of Banking and Mortgage Distribution.

There are several reasons why seniors are in debt – here are a few, along with strategies for dealing with them.

Money pressures Many Boomers are still paying for their children, especially when it comes to housing. Ac-

cording to a 2015 survey**, 18% of first time homebuyers have their down payment paid through a gift from a relative — usually a parent.

Many young retirees are also caring for aging parents and that comes with both a financial cost and a time commitment.

Less aversion to debt According to an Investors Group survey, 27% of high net worth Canadians plan to have mortgages while retired — and 67% who have mortgages say they have the cash to pay them off in full***.

Part of the reason for this is that many Boomers are used to debt – they’ve been borrowing money for decades – and with low interest rates, they don’t’ see the need to pay off their house before they retire.

In some cases, they’re being strategic, says Bentley.

They may use a mortgage to acquire a second property

without drawing down on their retirement savings. That can be good strategy because withdrawing other assets, such as money from an RRSP, would trigger tax implications.

But it’s a risky one. If you’re making less money in retirement, you could have trouble paying your debts back, especially as interest rates rise.

Pay attention to leverage Boomers need to manage their financial situation carefully, as debt problems could force you to sell your home or compromise other plans.

One way to alleviate some of the debt burden is to consolidate your leverage.

It won’t reduce your overall debt, but you’ll likely achieve a more attractive interest rate and free up more monthly cash flow. The money you save in interest can be used to more aggressively pay down your debts.

HEALTH HUB Health cards need to be updated with new stickers by December 31, 2017 Residents with provincial health coverage who have not received their health card renewal stickers in the mail are encouraged to contact eHealth Saskatchewan (eHealth) as soon as possible.

Most health cards expire on December 31, 2017.

If an individual’s health card expires, he or she could be billed for medical services.

This fall, eHealth mailed health card renewal packages to all residents with provincial health coverage. The packages included updated

stickers that will renew health cards for a three year period, until December 31, 2020.

Residents who have not received a package should call eHealth at 1-800-667-7551, email Change@eHealthSask. ca, or visit eHealth’s office located at 2130 - 11th Avenue in downtown Regina to receive their renewal sticker. eHealth’s office is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on statutory holidays, including December 25, 26 and January 1.

PureChem Cougars looking forward

The Carlyle PureChem Cougars put in a valiant effort on Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Bienfait against the Coalers; but despite a battle the Coalers came out

on top in a 9-5 win.

Scoring for the PureChem Cougars were Brett Turgeon with two – the goal in the first period was assisted by Cooper Fox and Turgeon’s goal in the second period was assisted by Billy Greenwood and

Jordan Fox. Mark Shaw also found the net in the second period with an assist by Brett Turgeon and Branden Lequyer.

In the third Cooper Fox earned a goal off assists

by Brett Turgeon and Mark Shaw. Mark Shaw rang in the fifth goal off assists by Jordan Fox and Brett Turgeon.

Despite the strong effort it wasn’t enough to stop the Coalers; but the PureChem Cougars rallied together to come back strong on Dec. 8 versus the Oxbow Huskies. The PureChem Cougars scored in the first with Brayden Starr finding the back of the net off an assist by Troy Morrisseau and Clayton Geiger.

Atom Cougars hockey update Tammie Riddell Sports Contributor The past couple weekends have been filled with tournaments and a league game. The weekend of Nov. 24, the team travelled to Rocanville for a few games. The Cougars first game was against Fox Warren. The Cougars came out on fire! The spectators witnessed some great passing, back checking and defensive plays. The Cougars won that game easily with a score of 11-1. The next game was against the Ochapowace Thunder, this game was a more physical game with lots of rubbing in the corners. After the first period, the Cougars were pup 4-2. The Cougars continued to pebble Ochaps goalie and after the second they still had the lead, 8-4. Ochap was not giving up and came back in the third scoring three goals to make the final 9-7 for the Cougars. This win put the beloved Cougars in the A side final Vs Fox Warren again. This game was a tighter game than the round robin game. The Cougars looked a little tired in the first period, but found their groove in the second and third, winning that game and the tournament 5-1. The team was ecstatic to bring home the trophy. Congrats Cougars!

On Sunday, the Cougars travelled to the newly renovated rink in Alameda to take on the Oxbow Huskies. This was a fast-paced thrilling game for all the parents and spectators in Alameda. The Cougars attacked first with a quick goal at 21:55, but the huskies answered back with their first goal at 21:07. The Cougars then evenly distributed the three remaining goals throughout the period, ending the first with a lead of 4-2. The second period saw 2 more goals being scored by both teams, ending the period 6-4.

The final period was packed with passing, shooting, scoring, glove saves, a penalty or two and goals. The

Dec. 2, saw the Cougars travel to Bienfait to participate in a tournament. The first game was against the Estevan Lightening. The Cougars pounced on the Lightening in the first period, they skated hard and riddled the lightening’s goalie with many shots, ending the period with a 6-1 lead. The second period saw a couple penalties by the cougars and two goals being scored. The Cougar defense was dynamite in the second, not allowing a goal! The third period was again outstanding for defense and offense. There were no goals scored by the Lightening and the cougars added to their lead, ending the game with a 10-1 victory. The Cougars second game would have them battling the Lampman Imperials.

The Cougars offensive lines were scoring machines, while the defense was rock solid & our goalie was fantastic between the pipes! Just to add some excitement to the game, there were three penalties that had to be killed. The Cougars defeated the Imperials 14 – 0. The third and final game to win the tournament was against the hometown Bienfait Coalers.

The house was packed to cheer on the hometown heroes and the out of towners. The Cougars came out strong and ready for a fight! They ripped up the ice and left for the dressing room with a considerable lead of 6-0. The second period saw three goals by the Cougars and one by the Coalers, ending the period 9-1. The third and final period of the game saw a penalty before an goal. The Cougars killed the penalty, but were scored on 19 seconds later. They answered back with a goal at 9:12. They were not finished there; two more goals were scored before the game was over. The Cougars won the tournament with a 12 – 3 win over the hometown Coalers.

Ottawa seems to think so

By Bob Cox Hockey news, fashion tips, TV and movie listings, retirement strategies, updates on Celine Dion – all of this information now constitutes local media -- at least according to federal Heritage Minister Melanie Joly.

This week marked a black spot in the history of Canadian newspapers with the closure of three dozen papers, taking out of circulation three million copies of printed newspapers each week and eliminating more than 300 jobs.

Joly’s response in Ottawa was a refrain that she has been using more and more lately, saying the federal government is already helping news providers.

“We value the importance of journalism and that’s why we invest up to $75-million per year in local media,” she said.

This is true only if you use a definition of “local media” unlike any other ever attempted.

The minister was referring to the Aid to Publishers program, through which the federal government provides annual grants to printed publications – magazines and non-daily newspapers -- primarily to help with distribution costs.

Many Canadians will be surprised by who is getting this support for “local media.”

Figures from the 2014-15 fiscal year show: • The Hockey News, which primarily covers the NHL, got $1.3 million.

• TVHebdo got $1.5 million. It provides TV listings in French and is owned by the same company as the TVA television network in Quebec.

• TV Week, which provides TV listings in British Columbia, got $1 million.

SANTA DAY AT KENOSEE LAKE The snowball room in the upstairs of the church was a hit as youth battled it out with soft, homemade snowballs.

Fun was had outside and inside the Moose Mountain Church of Christ during the joint Santa Day event held by the Church of Christ and the Moose Mountain Lions.

It wouldn’t be fun at the lake without golfing, even on Santa Day. Here youngsters test out the putting game set up during the excitement at Kenosee Lake on Saturday, Dec. 9.

Cookie decorating was one of the big hits during the Santa Day at Kenosee Lake.

Sled rides were one of the great attractions held during the event from 1-4 p.m. at Kenosee Lake on Saturday, Dec. 9.

• Good Times, a magazine aimed at retirees, got $588,531.

• Flare magazine got $408,236; Chatelaine got $1.5 million for its English edition and $848,428 for its French one.

• Movie Entertainment got $1.5 million. It is produced for subscribers to the paid TV channel The Movie Network, owned by Bell Media.

This is a snapshot of one year. The same publications get large grants year after year.

Publications such as Macleans get the maximum $1.5 million annually. Chatelaine, which gets money for both its English and French editions, has received $19.3 million in the past eight years. Movie Entertainment has received $11.3 million in the same period.

The list goes on and on to hundreds of magazines that get federal funding. It raises all sorts of questions. Why does a TV book distributed by a broadcaster qualify for funding when a TV guide distributed in a daily newspaper does not? And how on earth does giving a subsidy to a promotional magazine for a TV channel qualify as support for local media?

The simple fact is that the Aid to Publishers program mostly supports magazines, an industry that for the most part does not have a viable business model without public subsidies.

Many community newspapers get money, but relatively little.

Those affiliated with NewsMedia Canada got between $3,301 and $124,252 in 2014-15, and averaged $25,831, less than two per cent of what The Hockey News received. Daily newspapers are not eligible.

Overall these community papers got about $7.8 million of the $68.9 million handed out.

Some went to ethnic, farm and religious publications. The Catholic Register got $403,355; The Western Producer got $1.2 million.

The bulk -- $53.4 million -- went to magazines. Some individual magazine companies get more per year than all community newspapers combined. TVA Publications got about $7.5 million this year, as did Transcontinental Media.

Rogers Media, publisher of Chatelaine , Macleans and other magazines, got $8.9 million in 2016.

Readers Digest got $3 million this year for its related publications.

The Aid to Publishers program is being revamped. It’s unclear

what the new qualification criteria will be or whether the program will get any more money.

However, the review is doomed to failure unless the federal government understands that it is not currently supporting local news media in any meaningful way and that the current

funding, even if redistributed, will do little to help reporting in local communities across Canada.

We have not heard this from Joly. In fact, her Tweeted response to this week’s closures suggested she still does not understand what is happening in local media,

where collapsing revenues are forcing cuts in reporting across all traditional news outlets.

“We know Canadians care about their local media and we will continue to support it,” Joly Tweeted.

Bill Hall, late of Kisbey, Sask. passed away at the Arcola Health Centre, Arcola, Sask. on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at the age of 80 years.

Bill was predeceased by his parents, Bruce and Mary Hall and siblings, James, Robert, Arthur and Ross Hall, Eileen Smith and Peggy Lake.

He is survived by his brother Morris Hall; sisterin-law Bonnie Hall and brothers-in-law, Art Smith and Cliff Lake; nieces and nephews, Geraldine, Wayne, Glenda, Christine, Bobby, Wytt and Jonathan, as well as many special friends and neighbours.

A come-and-go gathering will be held in Bill’s honour on Monday, December 18, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Kisbey Recreation Centre. Interment will take place at Percy Cemetery, Kisbey.

If friends so desire, donations in Bill’s memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, #26 - 1738 Quebec Avenue, Saskatoon, Sask., S7K 1V9.

Cheryl Winkler

It is with great sadness that the family of Cheryl Winkler announces her passing after her strong battle with Lung Cancer, on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at the age of 56.

Cheryl will be lovingly remembered by her husband Duane Winkler, children Maegen Winkler, Terry (Christina) Eldstrom, Jesse Winkler and Tristan Valentine; grandchildren Tristan and Ashton Eldstrom, Hunter and Jensen Winkler and Cherise, Deacon, Keenan and Nova Winkler. She is also survived by her brother as well as brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and dear friends. She will be reunited with her beloved parents, Larry and Claire Rogers.

Cheryl touched the lives of everyone she crossed paths with. Through her many years working in the Provincial park to her last 14 years spent rehabilitating injured and sick wildlife, Cheryl gave every ounce of her soul to the Moose Mountain area and could be considered Saskatchewan’s very own Mother Nature.

She cherished spending time with her family near and far, meeting kindred spirits, and working on her art work, especially painting on feathers and selling them to raise money for Moose Mountain R & R resident animals. Cheryl was passionate about their care and had a special soft spot for the misunderstood raccoons of the world. She was always rooting for the underdog and never gave up on anything she believed in. She took on any new challenge with grace and in stride.

A feast was held at Cowessess on Dec. 8 for Haeden Duke-Spavier. He passed away at the age of just short of 2 years. He was Chantel Duke’s son and a great-nephew of Gail Knelsen.

Workers at Deer View Lodge were saddened to hear of the passing of their coworker Carol Glasser of Moosomin. She passed away on Dec. 5 at the age of 64. Her funeral service was at the Moosomin United Church on Dec. 9. Sympathy to husband, Don and family, Chad, Neil Ian, Quinn and Hilary.

Congratulations to the Wawota Senior Boys Volleyball who participated in the Provincials held in Moosomin and Rocanville on Nov. 24 and 25. They were awarded the silver medal and this is the first time any Wawota volleyball team has medalled in the finals. The team consisted of Lucas Porter, Tallyn Rowley, Quade Jackson, Nathan Bye, Cody Wasilinchuk, Jesse Hirtle, Mykel Bierman, Trevor Stewart, Billy Easton, Mac Nevin, Thomas Husband,Jose Vileta and Jesse Schill.

Coaches are Riley Riddell and Devin Stewart.

The Wawota United Church held its Annual White Gift Service

last Sunday. After a skit about the symbols of Christmas the many food items were put under the Christmas tree.

They will be donated to the Maryfield Food Bank.

Many years ago when we donated food items we were encouraged to wrap it in white paper or use a white grocery bag. The people making up the food hampers didn’t know what was in the wrapped items so had to open them.

After 17 years, Arcola volunteer extraordinaire Phyllis Cameron has served her final monthly meal at the community’s Golden West seniors apartment complex.

For nearly two decades, Cameron has provided a monthly meal at the residence and although she’s not stepping down from the myriad of other voluntary commitments she’s involved in, the 86-yearold former teacher says that it’s time to retire from this particular role.

“It’s time,” says Cameron with a smile.

“I just thought the time had come. And Linda Chapman and Eileen

Corrigan will be taking over, so I’m looking forward to coming for lunch - I just won’t be cooking it anymore.”

Golden West’s common room was filled with residents, their relatives, and many of Cameron’s friends for her final lunch at the facility. The menu at the Tuesday, Dec. 5 event was a Chinese buffet from Carlyle’s Canada Cafe, topped off with Cameron’s signature cinnamon buns for dessert.

“I decided that food from Jimmy (Chan) from the Canada Cafe would not only be a treat, but that I would take it easy and not cook this time,” laughs Cameron.

However, Cameron was well-qualified when she volunteered to provide a monthly meal at the Golden West 17 years ago.

In addition to baking hundreds of cinammon buns every year to donate to numerous good causes, Cameron was a volunteer cook “for 10 summers” at White Bear Lake’s Camp Wabimasquah.

“I’ve really enjoyed it,” she says. “Last month, I made ham and scalloped potatoes

A 2013 recipient of the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal, Cameron’s commitment to her community is legendary - and ongoing - but the former teacher says of retiring from this volunteer role: “It’s time. I just felt the time had come. for the people here and another winter meal is stew and dunplings. In the summer, it’s cold meats and salads.”

“It’s a happy-sad day for me,” says Cameron. “It’s been really rewarding and it’s kind of neat to come out once a

month. And with Linda and Eileen taking over, it will continue to be an opportunity for neighbours and friends to get together.”

“So I’m leaving with a happy heart - and I’m planning to come back for lunch.”
