Southeast’s Tour of Terror

Palms sweaty. Surrounded by darkness, you can feel something watching you; waiting.

You feel your muscles tighten in anticipation of a spook jumping out to scare you.

As your eyes adjust to the light you wonder… was that something moving or was it just your mind playing a trick on you… as you question what you saw, you realize what you thought was a statue has moved and you let out a shriek of terror.

Many people love to be scared and Hallowe’en is an opportune time for this experience, especially when numerous communities in the area host fun, but terrifying haunted houses.

To make the rounds this year, you should make a few - sure to be - terrifying stops.

Alida The Alida Haunted Rink is returning for its 17th year and is finally back in the rink where it all started following needed construction af-

ter a flooding event.

It will be open Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20-21, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, Oct 27-28, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Oct. 29, the Fun Fair will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with games, treats, and a costume parade. A beer garden will be open Oct. 20-21 and Oct. 2728.

Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for those 12-years-old and younger.

Heward The Heward Haunted Rink is returning for its 13th year of spooks.

It is set to operate Friday to Sunday, Oct. 27-29. The Friday and Saturday events will be held from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. and are Rated R for scary; while the Sunday event is being held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and is Rated G. The kitchen and bar will be open Oct. 27-28, while the kitchen only will be open on Oct. 29.

Admission is $10 for anyone 13-years or older, while the cost is $5 for those 12-years and under. (Minors under 18-years must

be accompanied by a guardian on Oct. 2728.)

The Heward Rec Board plans to use the funds to continue upgrades to the rink as well as to go towards operational costs.

Wawota The second annual Wawota Haunted Hotel is here for two nights and will be held Friday, Oct. 20, and Saturday, Oct. 21.

The adult version (15-years and older, unless accompanied by an adult) is set for 8 p.m. to midnight both days.

Cost is $10 per person – and minors will be required to remain in particular section of the bar as they wait for their turn to go through the Haunted Hotel.

The kids version is set for Saturday, Oct. 21, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Cost is $5 per child and the accompanying adult is given free admission.

The bar will be serving a kids meal that evening as well.

Money raised will be going towards the Wawota Rink and a small portion of the proceeds will be given to Movember.

brating Thanksgiving Day. It’s an annual event, a day officially dedicated to remembering all the blessings that we enjoy as individuals and as a nation.

Yesterday morning as I sat in the car awaiting my husband’s return from the local mall, my heart was touched with three nearly identical incidents epitomizing my reasons for giving thanks in spite of all that’s going on in my life and in the lives of those around me.

Both these scenarios involved a father and a small child. In the first, a man held tightly to the hand of a small child as

they surveyed an area in the parking lot after checking for cars. When father determined that it was safe to do so, they crossed the sidewalk into the mall entrance. A picture of simple trust, I told myself.

In the second occasion the young lad let dad know he wanted to stop and check out something on the sidewalk. Releasing his hand, dad kept his eyes steadily on the boy and immediately returned when it appeared the little one was about to head across the parking lot. Although granted freedom to make choices, he was under

the constant care of his dad.

In the third instance, a young girl emerged from the passenger side of the car while dad exited from the driver’s side.

She checked around her than proceeded to join dad. Age and experience earned more freedom but never without dad’s supervision.

“We must put our hand in the hand of God like a little child, and let Him lead us out into the bright sunshine of His love.” Dr. Pardington May each day be your Thanksgiving, celebrated in the knowledge that we are never out of His care.

Weekly RCMP report Lynne Bell

The Carlyle RCMP detachment dealt with several calls from Thursday, Sept. 29 to Thursday, Oct. 5.

9 1 1 / F a l s e alarm(s) An area business called 911 in an effort to test the number. This is not recommended by RCMP. An alarm at a business in Carlyle went off in error.

Assault An individual in Kisbey was charged with assault regarding an altercation which involved two people. This individual was arrested and held in custody. Other charges include: uttering threats, possessing a firearm contrary to a prohibition order and breach of release conditions. This individual is still in custody.

In the Carlyle area, an individual was charged with assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm. This person also

faces other charges which include impaired driving.

Assistance RCMP assisted hunters who were stuck in Moose Mountain Provincial Park.

Carlyle RCMP received a report of a person who was walking on Hwy 9 holding what looked like a gun or a bottle. Police were called three hours after the individual was spotted, so although police made patrols, this person was not found. Staff Sgt. Darren Simons says: “Please bring your concerns to our attention as quickly as possible, so we can assist you as quickly as possible.”

An individual in Redvers called the RCMP as they were upset with regards to their neighbour’s Halloween decorations as well as the fact that the neighbour in question also owned a large dog. Police informed this person that this was not a police matter and therefore, there was nothing members could do.

An RCMP member changed a flat tire for a motorist on an area highway.

Members provided assistance at Carlyle’s

Terry Fox Run. Break and enter A break and enter which occurred at in a rural area is still under investigation by RCMP. Theft An incidence of theft under $5,000 was investigated by Carlyle RCMP. Traffic offences/ Collisions A vehicle rollover in the Redvers area resulted in an individual incurring injuries which resulted in this person being transported to hospital via STARS air ambulance. Lack of seatbelt use was a factor.

A collision between a semi and a tractor near Redvers did not result in any serious injuries.

In two separate incidents - one in the Kisbey area and one near Manor - vehicles collided with a deer and a horse, respectively.

RCMP received two reports of possiblyimpaired drivers from members of the public - one in the Carlyle area and one near Kisbey.

Members made patrols, but neither of these vehicles were located.

Police responded to one report of an erratic driver.

Poco a poco in the field of the Lord I recently received a thank you card for a wedding gift my wife and I gave a year ago.

Of all the wedding gift thank you cards I have received over the years this one was the most meaningful.

The newly weds took gifts and donations of money from their wedding and planned a winter trip to the Baja Mission Mexico. There they contributed to an orphanage project, built kitchen cupboards and picture frames. As well they worked in a nursery, a macademia nut orchard and a nut house (sorry, couldn’t resist).

In his homily “Little Seeds of Hope” Father Brendan McGuire describes a trip that his parishioners have made to Nicaragua over several years. On the first trip they spent time digging holes in an open field and placing rebar. Then they left.

Another missionary group did the cementing and continued the project. And so the construc-

tion continued with volunteers and benefactors from different churches and groups.

An open field is transformed into two buildings with 100 children in the school, all dressed up with proud clean uniforms, coming from homes with dirt floors, stick and stone roofs. “Poco a poco. Little by little we make a difference.”

“May we focus then on planting the little seeds or the little yeasts in our life,” McGuire says.

And we don’t have to fly around the world to change the world. “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family.” St Theresa of Calcutta Mother Theresa continues, “Stay where you are. Find your own Calcutta. Find the sick, the suffering, and the lonely right there where you are — in your own homes and in your own families, in your workplaces and in your schools.

“You can find Calcutta all over the world, if you have the eyes to see. Everywhere, wherever you go, you find people who are unwanted, unloved, uncared for, just rejected by society — completely forgotten, completely left alone.”

“Just do small things with great love.” Saint Theresa of Calcutta “In our lives,’ Father Brendan McGuire says, “it comes down to doing the little things well.

Making a proper u-turn on Main Street Kelly Running Observer Staff

Intersections along Main Street in Carlyle can be a point of contention. Last week an individual described an encounter with a vehicle that was attempting a u-turn. The person conducting the u-turn hugged the inside curb

placing a turning vehicle between them and oncoming traffic. Instead of waiting to be able to see if their route was clear the u-turner started going and nearly collided with the complainant - a vehicle with the right of way.

Last week an individual almost collided with another vehicle when the other vehicle attempted a U-Turn but failed to follow proper procedure. Be careful out there and follow the rules of the road to ensure everyone stays safe. it’s essential you remain in your proper lane when conducting a u-turn – the right-hand side of the road. This is because you don’t want anything passing between you and where vehicles are coming from, which becomes especially important when it comes to people attempting a u-turn on Main Street.

But the number of meetings on the agenda each year are certainly in decline.

It’s not a case where there is nothing new to tell farmers about. The use of robotic machinery, field mapping with aerial drones, new crops such as camelina, herbicide resistant weeds and changing markets are just some of the current areas where there are always new information being released.

The difference today is that a town hall meeting is falling out of favour.

There are several logical reasons for that, including producer time, the cost of touring expertise, weather threats to attendance in winter, and facility costs. Those are not new concerns, but today there is an alternative.

Farm producers, like most of us, have become much more comfortable using the computer, the

notebook, and the cellphone. These devices open the door to knowledge at your fingertips.

And it can be information specific to a particular interest.

To borrow from my own world, I am a huge fan of the Canadian Football League, but coverage in terms of news and league talk on even Canadian sports television is limited.

But tune into the Internet and search out CFL podcasts and you find shows such as ‘The Waggle’, ‘2 and Out’ and ‘For Your Earballs’.

There is a new Major League Rugby loop launching in 2018. I love rugby, and the podcast ‘Earful of Dirt’ has already begun providing insight into the new league.

Name your interest, and you are likely to find podcasts which fill the niche in terms of information.

And it goes farther as well.

Every once in a while I get a message coming across Facebook advertising a webinar hosted by the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers. This year such webinars have included’ Scouting for Disease in Pulse Crops, Soybean Agronomy, and Nutrient Requirements and Contribution of Pulse Crops. Such events are specific to the pulse producer, and specific to certain aspects of the broader pulse sector. Farmers don’t need to drive to Saskatoon for such events, but can sit at home and learn.

Certainly, the area of webinars, podcasts and other Internetbased programs are the future of farm producer information dissemination.

Lunch N’ Learn to be offered by Envision Counselling & Support Centre Carlyle, Saskatchewan – Envision Counselling and Support Centre is pleased to announce upcoming Lunch N’ Learns starting in October. These educational lunch sessions will teach parents how to choose happiness and parent with positivity. The Lunch N’ Learns are for adults who wish to focus on emotional well-being and finding new tools to improve their relationships.

“It takes courage for someone to sign up, but people who attend these sessions are able to implement these tools right away in their everyday life,” says Christa Daku, Executive Director of Envision.

Eric Corkish of Regina visited with his grandmother, Shirley last week. While here he helped with fall clean-up. Rick Corkish picked him up on Oct. 7.

Joe and Jean Brisbois travelled to Winnipeg where they celebrated Thanksgiving with Clinton Brisbois and Kelly Chuchmuch.

Our Thanksgiving company were Stacey Heffernan, Sarah and Kate, and Kenton and Stacey Olson, Carter and Emmett all of Regina. We were missing the Lamoureaux family as they spent several days in South Dakota visiting with Jake’s family and friends.

The Wawota Forum’s Sportsman evening held last Saturday was a great success! More than 200 attended and enjoyed the prime rib meal and the speakers who were Jeff Odgers, Mike McCullough, and Doug Sauter.

With so much fund raising happening in our community I think coming up with new ideas such as this fundraising evening was an excellent idea!!

I have been informed that I missed a few changes on Main Street. I missed the demolition of the Carscadden Funeral Home. It was the former building build and owned by Ray Snyder’s Photography in former years.

I also forgot to mention the demolition of the residence at 206 Main Street. This house was build in the 1940’s by Bob Bratten and had a sucession of these owners, Terry Hamilton, Chris Ehikhamen, Irene Goodwill, Len Flemington and Larry and Vicki Resko. The Resko’s have moved a house in from Calgary on this lot and when ready will be for sale.

One other improvement I want to mention is the refinished ramp at the Credit Union! What a great job done by Spray on Solutions.

I am wondering where September went. I missed putting in my annual blurb about Terry Fox and his legacy More than 35 years ago this young man inspired the nation and then the world to raise money for cancer research. I support The Terry Fox Foundation as they do not spend money on free shirts, mail out address labels, cards etc. Over 83% of money donated goes to research!!

Discussion is good. If people are open to understand where another person is coming from then they can better understand why things are the way they are or why change is needed.

When it comes to firearms, I believe that people should be allowed to have them, but that they do need to be monitored.

Rifles and shotguns are used for Kelly Running hunting, which many people do, Observer Staff and handguns are more so used for target shooting here than they are protection.

(The rules surrounding how to store them means that they are not easily accessible as they must be locked away separate from its ammunition.)

I myself have both my non-restricted and restricted Possession and Acquisition Licence. When I was going through the process of obtaining the “restricted” PAL, I had to list references and the RCMP called those people inquiring if they were worried about me having a handgun and asking about my mental health. In addition to writing the exam and providing references, I also have to maintain a membership to a gun club if I were to purchase a handgun. (Although I have my licence, I do not own a firearm.)

I enjoy target shooting with handguns and rifles, and skeet shooting with shotguns is quite fun.

It’s a challenge and I like challenges which require precision.

However, because of the laws in Canada – we have had mass shootings and issues surrounding firearms – but not to the same extent as the United States has.

Many people say that in the United States it is their 2nd Amendment right – the right to bear arms.

That Amendment, however, was created at a time when one bullet could be loaded and fired… and it took a long time to reload the weapon. It was based on safety and protection being that they lived in a different time: think frontier and modes of transportation available.

The vast number of weapons in the United States makes them accessible, more accessible than Canada because of our laws surrounding firearms.

Many people over the last week have stated how that if someone wants to commit a mass shooting they’ll find a way… but will they? I wonder if there were fewer firearms (legal or illegal) in the United States would there be as many deaths. Just prior to the Las Vegas shooting there was an individual in Edmonton who was set on injuring and possibly killing people. Instead of a firearm he used vehicles and a knife. Both are easier to protect yourself against than a firearm.

Vehicles being driven into pedestrians is dangerous, but if you see it coming you can run into a building and potentially get out of its way. The knife is an intimate weapon as you have to be right next to someone to use it. Weapons that can be used from a distance are the dangerous ones.

Rifles and shotguns for example are dangerous, but in Canada they are mitigated by limits to the clip or how many shells can be loaded at a single time.

So although the argument is that people who are set to carry out something like a mass shooting will find a way to cause terror and kill… would it be to the same degree as being easily able to access firearms.

And for those that carry firearms… they didn’t help them at all. The gunman was on the 32nd floor, people wouldn’t have necessarily known where it was coming from, and had someone in the crowd pulled a weapon out the police likely would have identified them as hostile. So, is defending being able to have them as a 2nd Amendment right really for protection?

The giants on the mountain It was 90 years ago this month that work began on the U.S. national monument Mount Rushmore. In 2016 more than 2.4 million people visited the famous site to take in the granite likenesses of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

My Outlook Chief sculptor Gutzon BorShelley Luedtke glum selected four presidents he felt represented the most important events in the history of the United States. Discussions often question if these were the correct four and then asking, if the mountain were to be carved today, who would be included? For every suggestion there are others quick to point out why that choice would be wrong. The debate can get loud. Do the achievements of a President outweigh controversial things that also occurred? Who determines what should be considered accomplishments if others disagree? Whose opinions matter most?

Some monuments, parks, schools, and streets have come into question because of who they honour, and it is argued they should be modified, removed or have their names changed. Others, as we have witnessed, vehemently disagree. People are divided over the question of whether activity or association early in someone’s life negates anything else they might do later on, and who does or does not warrant permanent historical, cultural or political memorialization.

Not only are the histories of the presidents on Mount Rushmore up for debate, so is the sculptor himself whose affiliation with particular groups has drawn into question his place in the historical record. Of course the very presence of the national park on the land it is located is also the object of divide. Nonetheless, as you gaze up at the carved faces you can’t help but marvel at the vision of the project, the complexity of the work, and the leadership of the individuals it honours. For better or for worse.

industry, league or nation provides a unique jumping off point for conversation. One sports writer came up with his Mount Rushmore of the NHL: Gretzky, Orr, Howe and Lemieux. Agree? Then there was the list created for the NBA: Jordan, Bird, Johnson and James. Debate flew over that one! What about the Rushmore of Hollywood actors: would it be Newman, Hanks, Nicholson and Eastwood? What about actresses, or tech titans, or captains of industry?

Think of all the talent and intellect those lists would overlook, since you can choose only four.

But perhaps there’s a different kind of list we could be making, and instead of considering the giants in everyone else’s lives, think about the giants in our own. Who would be on your Mount Rushmore?

For all the sports I watched with my dad, or the movies we enjoyed as a family or the conversations we had about politics, not once did my parents hold up any of those athletes, stars or politicians as someone they felt we should emulate. They didn’t look to those with fame or fortune to be role models for their children but instead exemplified and demonstrated the qualities and values they felt were most important. They also surrounded us with opportunities to be impacted by people of character and integrity: coaches, teachers, friends and extended family. It is from that pool of people that my Mount Rushmore is built.

None of the faces on the mountain are perfect.

They are people. They have done extraordinary things and they have also made mistakes. I may not have always agreed with their opinions or perspectives, but their desire to love, to serve and to guide can never be diminished. They inspired, motivated and provided the foundation from which I have made my way in the world.

But the people who most deserve to be up there are the very ones who don’t want to be there. They would rather keep doing what they’re doing--and they invite us to step alongside and join in. So let’s not stand back like tourists and simply look at our own Mount Rushmore, but instead let’s get our hands dirty and continue carving the course. Far more valuable than just gazing up in admiration is going forward in emulation. That’s my outlook.

For example, larger animal breeds may be more expensive to care for, partially because they simply eat more food. And if you’re taking in a dog you’ll want to consider the cost of training, which could set you back several hundred dollars.

Lifespan is another consideration. Hamsters, gerbils and some types of fish may only live a couple of years. A pet turtle, on the other hand, could live several decades.

Keep your pet healthy and happy. Health care can be one of the most expensive aspects of pet ownership. As with humans, it›s often best to invest in preventative care rather than treat emergencies.

Follow your pet’s recommended vaccination schedule and treatments, spay or neuter cats and dogs and visit the vet at least once a year for a checkup. Finding and dealing with health problems early on isn’t only less expensive, you may be able to prevent serious problems and improve your pet’s quality of life.

Diabetes is a condition where people don’t produce enough insulin to meet their body’s needs and/or their cells don’t respond properly to insulin. The food that people eat provides the body with glucose, which is used by the cells as a source of energy. If insulin isn’t available or doesn’t work correctly to move glucose from the blood into cells, glucose will stay in the blood. High blood glucose levels are toxic, and cells that don’t get glucose are lacking the fuel they need.

Diabetes is a major cause of heart disease, one of the leading causes of death in Canada.

It’s also the biggest cause of blindness and kidney failure in adults. Older adults with diabetes are twice as likely to develop high blood pressure as people without diabetes.

People with diabetes are also much more likely to undergo foot and other “lower extremity” amputations due to circulatory problems. Between onethird and one-half of men who have diabetes will experience erectile dysfunction at some point.

There are two main kinds of diabetes: type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. More than 90 percent of all people with diabetes have type 2. A 2015 Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) report estimated that about 3.4 million Canadians have diabetes. Only about two-thirds of people with type 2 diabetes are aware of it and are receiving treatment because, for many people, early symptoms are not noticeable without testing.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not make enough insulin or the body does not use insulin properly. It usually occurs in adults, although in some cases children may be affected.

People with type 2 diabetes usually have a family history of this condition and are most often overweight. This condition occurs most commonly in people of First Nations descent, Hispanics and North Americans of African descent.

Another less common form is gestational diabetes, a temporary condition that occurs during pregnancy. According to the CDA, depending on risk factors, between 3 percent to 20 percent of Canadian women will develop gestational diabetes. The problem usually clears up after delivery, but women who have had gestational diabetes have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder. It’s believed that a combination of genetic predisposition and additional (as yet unidentified) factors provoke the immune system into attacking and killing the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

Type 2 diabetes is caused by insulin resistance and inadequate production of insulin. Since the body cannot use the insulin as well as it should, or the pancreas fails to make enough insulin, glucose can’t be moved from the blood into

cells. Over time, the excess sugar in the blood gradually poisons the pancreas, causing it to make less insulin and making it even more difficult to keep blood glucose under control. Obesity is a leading cause of insulin resistance – at least 80 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight.

Genetic factors as well as environmental factors are likely to be involved in the cause of type 2 diabetes. A family history of the disease has been shown to increase the chances of getting it.

People with type 1 diabetes who are not being treated urinate frequently and feel excessively thirsty. They usually feel very tired and experience severe weight loss despite normal or excessive food intake.

The symptoms of type 2 diabetes usually appear more gradually. People with type 2 diabetes who do not have their blood glucose under control often have a persistent, mild thirst. They urinate frequently, and often feel mild fatigue and complain of blurred vision. Many women with the disease have recurring vaginal yeast infections. Some people may experience tingling in the hands or feet or cuts and wounds that heal slowly.

Diabetes is diagnosed with simple blood tests. Your doctor may diagnose diabetes if the level of glucose in your blood after eight hours of fasting is 7.0 mmol/L or higher. If your fasting blood glucose is between 6.1 mmol/L and 6.9 mmol/L, then you may have a condition known as impaired fasting glucose or prediabetes, which may later develop into diabetes.

Have a plan for when you’re unavailable. Another responsibility pet owners take on is making sure their pet is looked after while they›re away. The least expensive option may be to find a neighbor or friend who also has a pet and exchange free pet-sitting services.

Otherwise, you can look for a well-reviewed doggy daycare center or boarding service. You could try one of the several apps that connect you with someone who can feed, walk or play with your pet. If you’re away for several days, the apps can also help you find someone who will spend the night or take your pet to their home.

Bottom line: Taking a pet into your home and caring for them can be a rewarding and wonderful experience. It can also be life changing. Review the potential immediate and long-term costs to help ensure that you›ll be able to provide for a pet once they join your family.

If you’re looking to bring someone comfort in their time of need, follow these pieces of advice: • Always call before your visit, even if the rendezvous was planned. It’s possible that the person may not be well enough or in the mood for visitors. Should this be the case, don’t take offense and suggest another day for your visit instead.

• Always be willing to lend an attentive ear. Mute your cellphone and don’t interrupt. Let them talk freely and respect their moments of silence. Avoid giving medical advice or comparing their situation to someone else’s. And no matter what you do, don’t pretend to understand how they’re feeling (unless you’ve been diagnosed with cancer yourself) or say that everything will be alright. Instead, ask them how they’re feeling and let them know you’re there to help, however that may be.

How does breast cancer affect your bones?

Did you know that breast cancer treatments could affect patients’ bone density? Indeed, both chemotherapy and hormone therapy destabilize bone marrow and weaken bones in addition to reducing ovarian function and, consequently, levels of estrogen (a hormone that contributes to the development of healthy bones). It’s estimated that women who undergo breast cancer treatment lose between two and four per cent of their bones’ calcium within the rst year of treatment. (This loss is even more apparent in premenopausal women.) Furthermore, bone deterioration accelerates in women already experiencing osteoporosis.

Therefore, if you’re currently undergoing treatment or are about to start, make sure to adopt a well-balanced diet rich in calcium (milk, cheese, lentils, vegetables, etc.) and vitamin D (egg yolks, sh, liver meat, etc.). Calcium is essential for maintaining strong, healthy bones, while vitamin D allows your bones to better absorb calcium. It’s equally important to get enough exercise, as physical activity plays a vital role in maintaining healthy bones. To stay active without draining too much energy during treatment, prioritize low-impact activities such as walking.

People diagnosed with breast cancer often nd it difcult to express how they’re feeling for several reasons: discomfort, fear of upsetting loved ones, anger, etc. However, keeping your emotions bottled up inside consumes a great deal of energy that would be better used to ght the illness. Sharing your feelings could help you manage stress and provide you comfort in a time of need. Therefore, whenever you’re ready: • Talk to someone with whom you feel comfortable. If it’s too difcult to speak to a loved one about your diagnosis, consider joining a support group.

• Don’t be afraid to cry or experience intense emotions like anger.

Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to feel following a cancer diagnosis.

Cougars to take on Combines in Big Six opener Nov. 3 Kelly Running Observer Staff

post-season, leaving team number nine without a run at the Big Six title. While, the playoff structure has also been adjusted to a quarterfinal best of three games, semifinals best of five, and finals a best of seven.

The quarterfinal match-ups will begin following the regular season with 1st versus 8th, 2nd versus 7th, 3rd versus 6th, and 4th versus 5th.

Last year the Wawota Flyers defended their Big Six title and will be looking for a third winning season this year.

In addition to the changes made, a potential rule change for the 2018-19 season was discussed regarding “Import Players” or players from outside the team’s community. Ideas moving forward will be discussed and brought to the table next year.

The regular season is set to begin on Friday, Nov. 3, which will see the returning Combines visit Carlyle to take on the Cougars. The evening is already set for big things with free admission to the game and a guaranteed 50/50 of $5,000.

The Cougars will be donating their proceeds from the game’s 50/50 to KidSport (www.kidsportcanada.ca).

The Arcola/Kisbey Combines are returning this season after a oneyear hiatus last season – a long standing team of the Big Six they filed a leave-of-absence in 2016 due to lack of interest. The Combines will join the Bienfait Coalers, Carlyle PureChem Cougars, Carnduff Red Devils, Midale Mustangs, Oxbow Huskies, Redvers Rockets, Wawota Flyers, and the

Yellow Grass Wheat Kings (the 2016-17 addition to the league).

The Big Six annual meeting in Oxbow was hosted on Sunday, Oct. 1, which saw the dissolution of last year’s divisions. The nine teams will all play each other three times in order to balance the schedule; within this there will be at least one home and one away game between each home team and their opponent. In addition to this each home team will host an additional home game against four of the Big Six teams.

After an automobile accident caused permanent spinal cord damage, Blake wondered what his future would hold now as a paraplegic. However, whatever worries he had were eased when Blake discovered the incredibly supportive and inclusive community waiting for him. Not only does Blake have a rewarding career supporting others with spinal cord injuries, but he is also an internationally-ranked adaptive water skier!

“The Council gave me a chance, and I’m glad they did,” Blake said.

“I didn’t have any work experience and next to no office skills, but they hired me anyway.

I learned a lot about responsibility and began to really understand abilities, both mine and the people I worked with.”

Most importantly, Blake got his confidence back.

He was ready to try new things again. It was the start of a new chapter in his life – a chapter full of purpose and meaning.

Warriors, Cavs living up to NBA powerhouse tradition

Bruce Penton The 82-game National Basketball Association tips off this week and if you know the basics of the game — the ball is round, the floor is hardwood, the baskets are 10 feet high — you can probably predict that after all 1,230 regular-season games have been played and the league finals start in June, that the Golden State Warriors will be facing the Cleveland Cavaliers for the title.

Just like in June 2017.

And 2016. And 2015, too.

Boring?

Survey says: No, not boring at all.

The NBA has long been a league of concentrated power. The 1980s were owned by Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, and their teams, Celtics and Lakers, were overpowering, winning eight titles in that decade. The 1990s were the domain of Michael Jordan and the Bulls, and Chicago won six championships in eight years.

The 2000s were the era of Kobe Bryant of the Lakers and Tim Duncan of San Antonio Spurs, and titles followed them around (eight in an 11year stretch).

Now, it’s Steph Curry and Kevin Durant leading the dominant Warriors and the game’s best player, LeBron James, steering his home-state team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, to NBA heights.

But fans don’t seem to be yawning at what is basically a foregone Finals conclusion, seven months away. Can

any other team possibly supplant either of the game’s two superpowers? Possible, but probably not, and league commissioner Adam Silver says that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Silver told SBNation.com that he doesn’t object to the dominance of the Warriors and Cavs.

“From a league standpoint, you always want to see great competition,” Silver said. “It’s what our fans want to see. It’s what we provide in this league. But having said that, this is real life. It’s not scripted, and it happens. So, sure, the fan in me would love to see more competition at times, but on the other hand, I’ve said it before, I think we should also celebrate excellence.”

Pittsburgh Penguins won the Stanley Cup two of the past three years, but four other teams have been finalists in that period. The World Series featured Kansas City Royals twice in the past three years, but just like the NHL, four other teams made it to the Fall Classic.

Basketball fans seem to love the dominance by the Warriors and Cavs. TV ratings say so, and there are few empty seats in NBA arenas. So it’s time to enjoy the next eight months of ‘exhibition hoops’ and wait with anticipation for the Cavs-Warriors showdown next June.

He discovered waterskiing, and from the moment he hit the water, he was hooked. A natural athlete, Blake took to the sport exceptionally fast, competing internationally within months of strapping into the skis!

“For the first time, I felt like I didn’t have a disability,” Blake said.

This combination of employment and recreation was paramount in developing a sense of belonging and purpose

in Blake’s life, as it is for many individuals who access Council programming. Whether it’s sharing coffee with a friend, attending a community event or even competing in a waterskiing competition, each of us prospers with connection.

“If I hadn’t tried waterskiing, I would have missed out on so much,” said Blake. “You never know when or where an opportunity is waiting. You have to try new things.”

Whether it’s employment support or recreational programming, the Council is dedicated

to helping participants reach their goals and deepen their sense of belonging in the community. The payoff: watching individuals like Blake gain independence, develop life skills and renew their self-confidence.

The Moose Mountain Pumpkin Patch has activities and atrractions for all ages and this year, the corn maze has doubled in size from its original four acres to nearly eight acres.

Shane and Ashley Valentine opened The Moose Mountain Pumpkin Patch in 2016 and welcomed over 500 visitors on opening weekend. Although this year’s weather has been less than ideal, Shane says: “There’s still lots to do for people of all ages to see and do. And weather permitting, we’d like to welcome everyone to The Moose Mountain Pumpkin Patch until the end of October.”

The Moose Mountain Pumpkin Patch is located two miles northeast of Carlyle’s Prairie Dog Drive-In (located on Hwy 9, north of Carlyle).

For directions and updates, check out ‘The Moose Mountain Pumpkin Patch’ on Facebook. This year, the MMPP’s new attractions include donkeys, ponies and horses as well as (pictured) a pumpkin-themed knockerball.

Shane Valentine of The Moose Mountain Pumpkin Patch says that even with over 2,500 pumpkins to choose from, a huge corn maze, a fully-stocked canteen and more - one of the most enjoyable things about a day at the MMPP is “the chance for kids to run and play and enjoy being outside in the fresh air.”

This year, the Moose Mountain Pumpkin Patch has just over 2,500 pumpkins - both edible and decorative - for visitors to choose from. And in addition to picking that perfect pumpkin, patrons can also enjoy outdoor activities - including tackling the zipline.

The Moose Mountain Pumpkin Patch has attracted visitors from near and far. “This year, the weather hasn’t been great for us,” says owner Shane Valentine. “But even then, we’ve had calls from Weyburn and Melville, to name two. They were just calling to see if we were open before they made the drive.
