Engines revved, cars crunched, and fans cheered as the action commenced. The car carnage attracted a full crowd at the Stoughton Fair Grounds where the seventh annual Stoughton Demolition Derby was hosted on Saturday, Aug. 13.

Four heats were held to determine the drivers

and cars, which would move on into the feature event. The top two from each heat was entered into the feature, leaving eight cars to provide total mayhem in the arena.

This year Kevin Dodd of Weyburn took home the first place accolades and a $1,500 prize, while Jarad Bourassa of Radville took home second place at the event and $500.

A total of 13 cars were out for the day and the

action was enjoyed by all, even though there were a few hiccoughs along the way.

“We were supposed to have an ‘80s ladies feature, but it didn’t quite turn out,” organizer Corey Bacon explained.

BACK TO SCHOOL LUNCH IDEAS

Ham & Cheese Muffins YIELD: 1 dozen

INGREDIENTS • 2 cups self-rising flour • 1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda • 1 cup milk • 1⁄2 cup mayonnaise

• 1⁄2 cup finely chopped, fully cooked ham • 1⁄2 cup shredded cheddar cheese shredded cheese (optional)

DIRECTIONS Note: As a substitute for each cup of self-rising flour, place 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a measuring cup.

Add enough all-purpose flour to equal 1 cup.

In a large bowl, combine flour and baking soda.

Combine remaining ingredients; stir into dry ingredients just until moistened.

Fill greased or paper-lined muffin cups two-thirds full.

Bake at 425 degrees for 16 to 18 minutes or until muffins test done.

Sprinkle with shredded cheese while still hot if desired.

A celebration 100 years in the making: Arcola Co-op marks centennial Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Arcola Co-op recently celebrated its 100th anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 13, where past and present board members, employees, regular members, and more came out to partake in the festivities.

The day marked a milestone for the Arcola Coop and in true Co-op fashion they focused on a way to involve the community. This included a Human Foosball tournament, bouncy castles and games for kids, as well as a dinner by Ryan Weir Catering, beer gardens operated by the Arcola/Kisbey Combines, and music following as instructors from “The Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party” played for the crowd.

Welcomed to the community was Clint “Dusty” MacDonald – President and Chair of the Board for the Federated Co-operatives Limited as well as the District Director for the area, spoke following the supper. Congratulating everyone involved with the Arcola Co-op he presented an Inuksuk statue from an Arctic Co-op, which symbolizes the investment individuals have in each other. Traditionally an Inuksuk was used to indicate the location of a cache of food, signify a change in direction, or a precautionary sign depending on the configuration of the Inuksuk; but, ultimately it was about a community come together.

The spirit of the Arcola Co-op can be traced back to the first settlers to the area in 1882. They quickly realized that surviving and thriving in this

The Arcola Co-op is celebrating 100 years as well as an 1,800 square foot addition to the C-Store which will include fried chicken and Vern’s Pizza – new programs being offered from Co-ops – and a Premium petrol tank. beautiful, yet harsh climate meant working together and supporting each other.

The basis for the present day Co-op store was developed in 1913 with Arcola farmers organizing the “Buffalo Head Grain Growers.” Their first recorded purchases included fence posts and 800 pounds of sugar. This laid the foundation for the 1916 emergence of “The South Arcola Grain Growers,” an association which had a small building on the Scarrow farm where members recorded their own transactions according to an honour system.

The 1916 original Board Members included W.W. Ottewell – President, W.G. Anderson, and W.A. Hislop.

In 1920, the business was moved from the small building on the Scarrow farm to the “Noble Building” in the town of Arcola; at this time they also realized a name change becoming known as the “Arcola Co-op.” The business had expanded and progressed to a full size retail operation which focused on commodities such as coal, twine, seasonal fresh fruit, winter apples in barrels, regular grocery products, produce and a limited selection of dry goods.

In 1951 the business moved to “Hemeline Block” – where the Credit Union now stands – and an expansion furthered the supplies available at the Arcola Co-op to include a line of dresses and a larger variety of dry goods.

The store would go through two more moves including a change in 1962 when the Arcola Co-op moved to the former “Clover Farm Store” (present day post office sits on this site) where they operated until 1981. In the early 1980s the Arcola Co-op was moved out to Hwy 13. At this time they discontinued groceries and began to concentrate on bulk

petroleum, hardware sales, and added a convenience store. Plans developed in 2008 to further expand and modernize the facility, which came in the form of a card lock and feed shed.

Today the Arcola Co-op operates as a C-Store and gas bar: Coffee bar, sandwiches, subs, salads, cold drinks, chips, and snacks of all kinds; it focuses on hardware including a variety of products including safety attire, automotive, electrical, tools, to seasonal selections; and it provides essentials for the agricultural community surrounding Arcola with an agro and petroleum. Feed to fencing and everything in between can be found in the Agro Department, while oil, slip tanks, a variety of fuel, card lock services, and daily fuel deliveries can be found in the Petroleum Department.

Currently underway is a 1,800 square foot addition which will finish this fall. The expansion will include new programs available to Co-ops including a fried chicken program and Vern’s Pizza program. Also being added is a Premium Gasoline tank, which is projected to be finished at the end of September – can offer premium and regular gasoline as well as diesel.

Being at the entrance of town, the Arcola Co-op also chose to beautify the area with a gazebo and walking path added to improve the look of a path used by bikes and people walking. The area also gives people travelling a place to sit and eat as they have quite a bit of road traffic coming through.

The Arcola Co-op has quickly grown over the years and currently the business employs 22 full and part time workers including General Manager – Cindy Kolenz, Agro/Petro Manager – Don Corrigan, C-Store Manager – Amber Metz, and Office Manager – Christie Schuett.

Skating for Sweden: Kruise Reddick signed to play pro hockey for HC Vita Hasten Lynne Bell

After five years at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Manor native Kruise Reddick is leaving the university with a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation and Leisure, as well as a successful tenure as captain of the school’s hockey team, the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Reddick has signed an eight-month contract with HC (Hockey Club) Vita Hasten in Norrkoping, Sweden. The team is part of the all-Swedish league, Allsvenskan, which is the second-highest hockey division in the country. “It’s great hockey,” says Reddick. “And I’m really looking forward to playing there. They’re even giving me my jersey number#11.”

“Vita Hasten means ‘White Horse,’” says Reddick. “The team is based in the city of Norrkoping, which is about two hours from Stockholm. It’s on the eastern side of the country, near the water. I don’t know if it’s sunk in yet, but I’m looking forward to throwing myself into the culture there and experiencing something new.”

Reddick’s resume is filled with university, junior, and pro hockey experience and accolades. “When I was 18, I attended a Chicago Black Hawks-Tampa Bay Lightning camp,” he says. “When I was 16, I started playing for the WHL’s Tri-City Americans in

Kennewick, Washington for five years. I wanted to get an education and further my hockey career, so I enrolled at the U of A and began my career with their team, the Golden Bears.”

Reddick captained the Tri-City team and the Golden Bears during those 10 years-leading both teams to numerous victories and garnering praise for both his personal and professional leadership. He was also named Team Canada’s captain at the 2015 Winter Universiade in Spain, where he led the Canadian squad to a bronze medal.

After graduating this spring and after leading the Golden Bears to their final national championship in Halifax, Reddick played professionally with the Eastern Hockey League’s Idaho Steelheads, based in Boise, before returning to Saskatchewan to see friends and family prior to his departure for Sweden.

The 26-year-old forward says the road to playing as a pro in Sweden began with the Golden Bears.

“Our (general manager) at the U of A had a connection through a friend of his with Vita Hasten,” he says. “Last winter, myself and one of our defencemen-a friend of mine named Jordan Rowley, who’s also going to be playing for Vita Hasten-were flown over there and it just snowballed from there.”

Although 26-year old forward and Manor native Kruise Reddick is off to Sweden to play professional hockey with HC (Hockey Club) Vita Hasten, this won’t be the first time he has competed on the ice in Europe. In 2015, he captained Team Canada’s top university players at the global Winter Universiade (University Games) in Granada, Spain, leading them to a bronze medal.

The Swedes not only looked at Reddick’s considerable talent on the ice-they were also impressed by his leadership skills.

“The GM told me Sweden expects big things from me,” says Reddick. “They’re looking to me to be kind of a leader. I don’t speak any Swedish-yet,” he smiles.

“So that part of it’s kind of intimidating, but it’s all part of the experience.”

“Of course, I plan to learn some Swedish and I’ve already researched the hockey part of it. The Europeans play on Olympic-size ice, so that’s noticeably different. I’ve played on that size of ice surface before, and it can only benefit my game.”

Another aspect of Reddick’s skill set that appealed to the Swedes was the fact that he has played both junior and college hockey in North America.

“The European teams generally play with more finesse,” he says. “They don’t play as physical a game as North American teams do. I can play a physical game, so I bring that too. But I’m also a smaller guy, so I work on my speed and skills.”

“I’m a forward, but I’ll play wherever the coach needs me.”

Reddick says that he and his friend and fellow Golden Bear, Rowley will share an apartment in Sweden. “We’ve seen some pictures of it and we’re great friends, so it’s a good situation for both us as newcomers to the team and to the country.”

“The team has already bought me skates and they look after all of our equipment,” he adds. “For example, I’m taking my own shinpads and I might wear their brand, but as a hockey player, I’m a creature of habit, so I’ll be taking some of my own equipment.”

Reddick says the prospect of playing professionally in Sweden is exciting rather than overwhelming.

“It’s not overwhelming because I’ve been preparing for it for so long. I knew I was going to play professionally.”

“My path as a player started in Manor, where I learned to skate. I played in Carlyle and then Yorkton. When I got a little bigger, I played for Tri-City and I learned how to be a pro there. That led me to the U of A and that turned me into the player I am today.”

“That, and my family,” he adds. “Without them, I wouldn’t have done any of this. They’re really my number one.”

“I’ve learned something from every team I’ve played on. And I’m looking forward to playing in Sweden.”

Teagan Littlechief “Brings the Party” to upcoming Carlyle concert Lynne Bell

Singer-songwriter Teagan Littlechief will return to the stage, Sat, Aug. 27 at Carlyle Memorial Hall. The writer of singles “I’ll Bring the Party” and Hell Bent and “Heaven Bound”which both reached number-one on the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Charts-is hosting a fundraising concert in order to raise funds to record another album at Calgary’s MCC Recording Studio.

“I’m fundraising to record again in Calgary at MCC,” says the singer who hails from White Bear First Nations. “I’ll be singing some new material, some country, some rock and roll.

There’s something for everybody and I’m really looking forward to seeing people from my home community and

performing for them.”

“I’ve got a new band-Vince Poorman is on drums, Fred Dustyhorn is on bass and Nathan Fisher plays lead guitar,” adds Littlechief.

“We’re also bringing country singer Orleen Saulteaux to the stage to open the show. She’s from Standing Buffalo First Nation and I’m really looking forward to her coming to Carlyle.”

The evening will also feature a concession stand, a cash bar, a 50/50 draw and a silent auction.

Recently, Littlechief made her second appearance at Regina’s Mosiac Stadium, once again singing the national anthem as the Saskatchewan Roughriders faced off against the B.C. Lions on July 16.

“It still gave me goosebumps,” she says.

“Even though it was the second time. It was nerve-wracking, exciting and a real honour.”

“Wherever I perform and whenever I perform, it’s an amazing feeling to know that I have an impact on people. I always set out to do my best and it’s always such an incredible feeling to know my performance has touched someone.”

Weekly RCMP report Lynne Bell

The Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to 97 files between Friday, Aug. 5 and Thursday, Aug.11.

911 calls/False alarms RCMP members received a call from individuals whose ATV had broken down in Moose Mountain Provincial Park. The call was passed on to conservation officers in the area.

Members received a call regarding a possible overdose by an individual in the Arcola area.

There were three false alarms during this period-one from Arcola and two from Kisbey.

Alcohol-related offences Carlyle Traffic Services responded to a report from Manor of a nude female and a clothed male lying on the ground. The female was unable to care for herself and refused to comply with direction from the officers. She was arrested, lodged in cells, and later released without charges.

A 34-year-old male from Regina was charged with impaired driving at Kenosee Lake.

A 45-year-old male was charged with impaired driving.

Members responded to the report of a possibly-impaired driver on Hwy 9, north of Carlyle. Patrols were made, but the vehicle was not located.

An intoxicated male was removed from a Carlyle area residence.

This individual was lodged in cells until sober and charged.

RCMP issued a ticket to an intoxicated

26-year-old male from Manor.

Assault A 38-year-old male was charged with assault in the Carlyle area.

This matter is still under investigation.

Assistance RCMP provided assistance to Envision Counselling and Support Centre and Victims Services.

Break and enter In Redvers, both the Redvers Golf Club and the Log Cabin reported break-ins. Both of these matters are still under investigation by police.

Breaching release conditions A 49-year-old male was found to be breaching the conditions of his release.

Bylaw complaint The report of a dog loose in Carlyle is still under investigation.

Disturbing the peace RCMP were called when an intoxicated individual refused to leave a Carlyle-area business.

Members responded to a call from an area hotel when an individual was disturbing guests.

Fire Carlyle Fire & Rescue and Carlyle RCMP responded to a fire north of Carlyle. Police found nothing suspicious about the fire.

Fraud An individual in the Wawota area was reported to be engaging in possibly fraudulent activity and as a suspicious person by members of the community after this individual went to a rural residence and offered the homeowner a $3,100 alarm system free of charge.

Harassing communications A report of harassing communications was found to be false after members investigated.

reports of a suspicious male at three Carlyle businesses.

Mischief RCMP received a report of mischief in which an individual was using Snapchat. This individual received a warning from police.

Members responded to three additional complaints of mischief originating from Carlyle.

Sexual assault A report of sexual assault from within the detachment area is still under investigation by the RCMP. Theft A 22-year-old Esterhazy male was arrested and charged with theft after allegedly stealing cash from an area business.

The theft of a truck in the Carlyle area is still under investigation

by RCMP. The theft of gas from a vehicle in Manor is still under investigation by police.

Traffic offences An individual was fined $580 for driving without a valid vehicle registration. Members also issued two warnings. In addition, police also issued several fines and warnings for: failure to stop at a posted stop sign, failure to wear a seatbelt, various inspection tickets, and speeding.

A 19-year-old male received a three-day driving suspension at Kenosee Lake.

An individual was fined for using a cell phone while driving,

and another driver received a warning for the same offence.

Uttering threats

Members responded to a report of an individual from the Carlyle area uttering

threats. However, the complainant declined to lay charges.

Reading can transport you to another world

Growing up my mom used to read to me every night.

When I got older and began being able to read by myself, I would read to her. Then older yet, I would read on my own before bed, begging to finish a chapter before lights out… because let’s face it you need to finish that chapter, you can’t Kelly Running let it sit there.

Observer Staff Ever since, I was hooked.

Reading was something fun to do that lets you see into a different world. I read a quote once that said, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.”

And it’s true, each page can transport you into the world that the author was creating when they wrote the book. One of my favourite books is “Shantaram,” by Gregory David Roberts. Reading it I felt as though I was walking beside him on his journey through India. It was extremely well written and I absolutely fell in love with the book which was nearly 1,000 pages long. I was travelling by train in Australia when I picked up the book and in a matter of a few days I had finished it.

I discovered, however, probably 10 years ago that not everyone reads in that fashion. When I read, whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, I allow my imagination to take the author’s words and turn those words into a world of its own. I found out from someone who doesn’t like reading that for them reading is simply words on a page. For them, they weren’t able to shift those words into a world to walk through. To me that seemed devastating because I had visited so many places between the pages of the books I read.

Although I absolutely love travelling and seeing things for myself, there are certain things a book can provide which real life cannot. I’m fascinated by history, so if I want to learn about the world during a certain time period there’s nothing better than walking through someone else’s shoes. A good author who has done their research can provide this. I was fascinated by the Soviet Union and thanks to Tom Rob Smith’s trilogy I was able to follow a former MGB agent through the country, experiencing what that world would have been like to live in.

Reading novels from earlier time periods can also provide insight into their world. I remember reading Erskine Childers’ “The Riddle of the Sands.” A spy novel written prior to World War I, the book carried with it a lot of sentiments of the time; mainly that war with Germany was on the horizon and that Britain should be prepared. It was in fact written in 1903 which was during the Anglo-German naval arms race (1898-1912), thus depicted society at the time it was written.

I find all of this to be quite fascinating and it’s part of the reason I enjoy reading. There can be so much in a book and I find it an interesting exercise of the imagination to learn through this means.

Sadly because of the work I do, I don’t read as much as I’d like to. I am always looking at words and writing, so reading isn’t my go to when I’m not working although I feel like this year I’ve been better than in years past to grab a book rather than turn on the television.

A matter of time makes it matter We were on day one--yes, day one--of coverage when my husband asked in earnest, “Have I put in enough time?”

He fully supports my sports viewing interests which reach their apex in an Olympic year, and he joins me for as much as he can stand before something more compelling draws his interest; paying bills, waiting for the lawn to grow so he Shelley Luedtke can mow again…anything that removes him from the hours of coverage I soak in. But he never complains about my interest in the Games or the endless updates I excitedly share when he returns to the dedicated Olympic viewing area.

Have I put in enough time? It’s a question athletes need to be able to answer in the affirmative as they step into a venue and head to their starting point. They have to be confident that the hours upon hours of preparation have been building to the point that they are ready to compete. When emotions threaten to overwhelm they can rely on the training they have put in.

There are times we may have found ourselves wondering if we have put in enough time; like waiting outside a classroom anticipating a final exam; standing at the end of the aisle about to join our life to the person waiting at the other end, or sending a child off to begin their independent life. Have we put in the hours to know the material well enough, to know our partner well enough, and to be confident in the knowledge that we put in the parenting time to help that child face what will come their way?

Politicians often cite their priorities as a way of helping us understand who they are. Perhaps we ascribe to a similar list: faith, family, friends, health…but we need to ask ourselves if it is all

talk or if we truly live in a way that reflects the list. What we put our time into should be an indication of what our true priorities are. But if we take an honest look at our day, does it?

Consider the hours spent reading fiction versus reading texts from our faith; or hours spent entertaining ourselves versus hours in worship. What about time spent at the dinner table compared to time spent at a desk? When it comes to friendship, how many status updates are shared on social media compared to cups of coffee shared in the company of a true friend?

What about our health? Do we do the things that we know contribute to better health or is it all too easy to let day by day and week by week pass without taking proper care of ourselves?

Many things make demands on our time.

But as we think about our obligations and responsibilities, our recreation and leisure, our dreams and goals we need to ensure the bulk of our time is dedicated to what matters most to us.

As we take to the starting line of all the new events life brings our way, emotions can easily threaten to overwhelm. Those are the moments we want to be able to take comfort in knowing the time we have devoted to our priorities has been well placed. Our faith will deepen, our children will find their wings, our friends will be there when we ask, and our bodies will be strong enough to do what we need. It doesn’t occur on its own. It happens because we have put the time into making it happen.

Minutes, hours, and days slip by quickly. It is an unstoppable force. Instead of misguided attempts to control it, we need to ensure we are the best possible investors of it. Perhaps the most necessary question to answer is: when it comes to what really matters, “have I put in enough time?”

That’s my outlook.

Seeing things differently . . .

Give my regrets to Rio: Pro athletes and the Olympics Lynne Bell

If you are an athlete who is selected to represent your country at the Olympic Games, you are automatically deemed to be among the best in the world (Eddie the Eagle notwithstanding, but I digress...). If you earn an Olympic medal, well, you’re off the charts as a winner in your sport. And you’ll always have that elite piece of hardware-your medal-to remind you of your achievement, one mere mortals could only imagine attaining.

While the Olympics aren’t without controversy regarding the authenticity of athletic achievement-(Hello, drug-testing, sketchy judging, etc.)-the Games are the closest thing we have to measuring and celebrating pure sporting achievement on a global scale.

But has the time come to let professional athletes off the hook when it comes to competing at the Olympic level?

This summer, golf’s much-anticipated return to the Games has pro golfers Jason Day (currently ranked number one in the world) and Rory Mcllroy (number four) giving their regrets to Rio. The duo have both cited concerns about the Zika virus regarding their reluctance to compete in Brazil, but perhaps for athletes of their calibre-and as professional golfers, to boot-an Olympic competition feels more like volunteer work than part of their real job.

An Olympic medal is, I suspect, a big part of any athlete’s bragging rights-no matter which sport they have excelled in. But I wonder if pro golfers (and hockey players and basketball players... ) have more concerns about the bottom line (i.e. payday) than yet another piece of bling, no matter how prestigious.

Aside from the threat of Zika, Day and Mcllroy also face certain logistical pressures surrounding the this year’s Olympics. Immediately prior to the Olympics, the pair will be playing in the PGA Championship, to name just one professional obligation.This-and other career-defining professional tournaments (all with potentially big paydays)-preceed a busy fall schedule for them.

Maybe squeezing in an Olympic Games thousands of miles away into an already-demanding schedule is just too much to risk, performance-wise, and ultimately, career-wise.

As in other sports-such as hockey and basketball-the priorities of a professional just aren’t a good fit for the amateur ideals that underpin Olympic competition.

I’m not suggesting that pro athletes don’t train hard for and sacrifice plenty in pursuit of reaching the pinnacle of their particular sport(s). But perhaps some sports place less importance than others on the chasing the Olympic dream.

Athletes at this level-whether amateur or professional-have all worked hard to reach the top of their respective games.

Maybe their achievements are just measured differently.

It’s a question that came up surrounding the Olympics… in what was an amateur event, should professional athletes be allowed to compete?

Back when the first Olympics was hosted the decision was for the games to be for amateur athletes… the issue between then and now?

They didn’t have professional athletes then. The amateur sporting event was originally developed as a high class sporting event because only those that could afford to train year round were those with enough money they could dedicate that time to training and not working.

Fast forward to today, why shouldn’t a professional athlete be allowed to compete? If the games were originally for those who could afford it, then a professional athlete would fall into that category. Besides when people tune into watch certain sports they’re looking for their athletic heroes, which let’s face it are typically a professional athlete of some sort.

When flipping on the winter games to watch hockey, everyone expects the biggest names in the business to be competing because they’re the top athletes. And the Olympics are supposed to be for the top athletes in the world. Even if we look to less high profile events like the Canadian women’s soccer team, Christine Sinclair, the Team Canada captain, plays professionally for the Portland Thorns FC in the National Women’s Soccer League. Other professional athletes

include Eugenie Bouchard in tennis and Gavin Schmitt in volleyball just to name a few.

They’re supposed to be the top athletes and many of the world’s top athletes today are professionals, so why not let them compete? Additionally from the Olympic viewing standpoint, professional athletes bring some clout with them and the big names are the reason why a lot of people watch the games.

So, I guess what I’m saying is, give the people what they want. If the Olympics are for the top athletes in the world, the ultimate achievement, then it’s not fair to take that away from professional athletes, who are supposed to be the best at what they do.

In some sporting events of the Olympics, however, professionals are not playing. In golf and basketball, athletes are more focused on what their livelihood is based on. For NBA players they’ve opted to rest up and relax before their gruelling schedule begins. While golfers too are more focused on their personal circuit than on going to the Olympics…

So, if the Olympics are meant to showcase the greatest athletes in the world, but those great athletes are unwilling to attend, then is it really what the Olympics are supposed to be? Ultimately I think they deserve the option of attending, but if they refuse to go through with the Olympic qualifier then that was their choice.

What I’d really like to see is an average person competing amongst Olympians… let’s put into perspective just how phenomenal these athletes really are.

“Run on the wild side” with the Moose Mountain Marathon Kelly Running Observer Staff

It was a beautiful morning at Saskairie on Sunday, Aug. 14, a perfect day for a “run on the wild side” at the 8th annual Moose Mountain Marathon.

Once again the organizers – Cathy Burton, Eugene Brown, and Lucille Weber – decided to host the event to fundraise for the Arcola School Track team. Additionally, with Quinn Brown and Marlee Cormier volunteering at a water station for the morning a donation on behalf of the Moose Mountain Marathon will be given to them as they are fundraising for an international karate competition in Japan as part of the Shintani National Team.

Each year the Moose Mountain Marathon is enjoyed by running enthusiasts from across Saskatchewan and Manitoba. This year the event even drew a participant from Abbotsford, BC. The day saw two birthdays including six-year-old and youngest participatnt Korbin Hicks who finished a 5km run with a time of 1:27:81 and 25-year-old Carlie Tomac who travelled from Assiniboia to partake in the half marathon which she finished in 2:45:47.

Thelma Snow the eldest participant at 74-years-young finished a 10km walk/run in 1:42:08.

This year’s participant from furthest away was David Kells of Abbotsford, BC. Runners, walkers, and workers that have been out to each of the eight Moose Mountain Marathons include Cathy Burton, Nora Houston, Roxanne Moreau, Thelma Snow, Elizabeth Birch, Eugene Brown, and Lucille Weber.

“We’re ready to be back next year,” Burton says. “We’re looking at

extra running options for next year.”

Burton added that the event will be going into its ninth year and is always the second Sunday in August for those looking to “Run on the wild side” at the Moose Mountain Marathon.

At 18-years-old, Carson Harcourt of Kipling, has 14 years of golfing experience under his belt and has competed in a variety of highly skilled events including the Canadian Jr. Boys National Championship recently hosted in St. John’s, Newfoundland. “[I] started playing golf at the age of four, my parents always had me out on the course in my car seat and as soon as I could swing the club, I started playing,” Harcourt recalls. “I first became interested because it was an activity that I could spend time with my parents doing and I continued to be interested because I constantly improved.”

Harcourt continued to excel and at the age of 10 he took in his first tournament in Melville: “[I] became hooked when I entered my first junior tournament in Melville; I made some new friends and won a prize, and I thought that was the best thing ever and since then I have enjoyed competitive golf.”

Harcourt, whose home course is Golf Kenosee, has competed at challenging courses and enjoys the opportunities that golf has provided him.

“This year I’ve competed on the Maple Leaf Junior Tour in two events: one in Swift Current and one in Estevan,” Harcourt spoke of his busy schedule this summer. “I finished tied for 10th in Swift and won the Estevan tournament in a playoff hole. I competed in the RBC Open in Nipawin, a tournament with both pros and amateur golfers; I finished tied for 11th in that. I also competed in the Saskatch-

ewan Amateur where I finished T20 and the Saskatchewan Junior where I was T2.”

“I competed in two national events: one was the Canadian National Future Links in Neepawa, MB, and the other was the Canadian Junior Boys National Championship in St. John’s, Newfoundland.”

Harcourt earned his way onto the Canadian Junior Boys National Championship, Team Saskatchewan, earning one of the top three scores through three rounds of play at a provincial tournament.

“I never felt any pressure while playing, my dad always says ‘it’s just a game, so go have fun.’ So, whenever I get into a situation where I feel pressure or frustration I can just think back to that and I realize that what happens on the golf course doesn’t really matter at the end of the day and life goes on. There’s no point in being mad or disappointed, I’m just happy I’m out on the course.

Some people don’t have the opportunities that I do.”

Preparing for the tournaments came with dedication to the sport: “I prepared for the tournament by practicing and playing at Golf Kenosee and the Kingswood Golf Course in Kipling basically every day.”

“I’d like to thank all of the men at Golf Kenosee and Kingswood Golf Course for allowing me to play golf with them and always making me feel welcome around them,” Harcourt added. “Some clubs aren’t nearly as nice to juniors as they are and I wouldn’t be where I am today without their support.”

Golfing for the ages Kelly Running Observer Staff

Carlyle Golf Course’s 11th annual Junior Golf Tournament was hosted on Wednesday, Aug. 10, where young regulars to the club and new faces competed.

A total of 18 youth came out for a two-man best ball format. Playing 18-holes, the young golfers ranged in age from nine to 17-yearsold. A shot gun start at 11 a.m. began the round, one which was enjoyed by all.

Martin Tourand, General Manager of the Carlyle course, explained that it was important for the golf course to host this particular tournament: “Kids are the future of golf, so we’re accommodating for them and hoping they have fun, while teaching them along the way about golf etiquette. So they’re walking the course - except for the two captains who are riding to make sure everything goes smoothly out there – they’re learning to make sure they don’t get in front of someone hitting their ball, fixing their ball marks, and we’re helping make them into responsible golfers.”

The Kenosee Ladies Golf Tournament was hosted on Saturday, Aug. 13, with 144 golfers in attendance. The day began with a shotgun start at noon and continued throughout the day.

The best costume winners were Betty Drumm, Val Cawood, Sharon Sauter, and Jill Sauter.

Winners of the first flight and overall winners were Bev Grimes, Alison Dunning, Maggie Stephens, and Barb Weber.

Rider Insider

By Rod Pedersen Something really stinks.

And it’s not just the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ 1-6 record, but that’s putrid enough.

No, Saturday’s 19-10 Rider loss to the Calgary Stampeders at Mosaic Stadium capped one of the worst weeks in recent memory for this franchise. Now the 2016 Roughriders season is hanging in the balance and we’ve barely passed mid-August.

BUT! But, but, but, but, the current situ-

ation of the Saskatchewan Roughriders extends far past Saturday’s game, and maybe even beyond this current season.

Twice in the past two weeks, the Riders were slapped with fines for breaking CFL rules. $15,000 for a ratio infringement on August 3, and then $60,000 last Thursday for roster violations. For those who don’t understand these things (and apparently there are many), Rider Coach and GM Chris Jones got nailed for not playing the minimum amount of Canadians against B.C. on July 16, and further for having too many extra players around at practice who aren’t under contract or on the team’s roster.

Then, on Sunday,

TSN’s Gary Lawless reported the Riders were dinged with a $5,000 fine for prancing on the midfield logo in Calgary for too long two games ago. That’s about as ticky-tack as it gets. Can somebody say “Witch Hunt”?

Frankly, for what I’d heard about the roster situation over the past five weeks and the subsequent investigation by the CFL, I figured one of two things was going to happen: Jones would’ve talked his way out of it and walked away unscathed, OR Jones and the Riders would face the firing squad to the tune of a $250,000 fine and the loss of first round draft picks for a period of years. (A la the Portland Winterhawks or New England Patriots).

However when the investigation was completed and the fine was announced on Thursday, CFL Commissioner Jeffrey Orridge slapped Saskatchewan with a $60,000 penalty. He split the difference.

My first reaction? “I was expecting way worse”. And for fear of making the situation worse, I tempered my comments on-air about Orridge’s decision. That is, until I saw a Tweet from TSN’s Dave Naylor which said this was the maximum fine allowable

by CFL rules.

Was this the highest fine in CFL history? Nobody seems to know. And that’s the way things go in the CFL these days. You wouldn’t want to actually announce facts like these when issuing news releases of this magnitude.

But oh no, it’s the Roughriders whose conduct, behaviour and activities have compromised the reputation of the CFL as Orridge stated in his news release on Thursday.

The same 1-6 Saskatchewan Roughriders who are currently leading the league in attendance. The Gden Goose. The CFL has a problem alright, but it definitely ain’t us.

More on that in a moment. A lot more.

However first, in my opinion, the Roughriders did get off easy in the arena of public opinion on the roster fine. If the Riders were guilty of such a sophisticated scandal as reporters Justin Dunk and Scott Mitchell alleged (of housing, feeding and paying non-roster

players), they surely would’ve faced far more-significant sanctions.

However none of that was brought up by the CFL on Thursday in their decision.

The Roughriders could seriously look at action against Dunk and Mitchell if those cavalier accusations are proven to be false. Rider President Craig Reynold’s assertion on Friday that no non-roster players were being paid aligns with what I knew of the situation.

Another thought which bounced around my head was, “We’re sure lucky Arash Madani is at the Olympics in Brazil right now” because the Sportsnet reporter loves scandals like these and takes no prisoners when it comes to exposing the truth. But it’s Canada. The minimum effort will suffice.

If the Roughriders were an NFL team, ESPN would have a production truck parked outside Mosaic Stadium and they’d be broadcasting live for days. It would end up being a 30 for 30 documentary.

To me, if Jones really thought these tryouts were breaking the rules, he would’ve held them somewhere else in the city and no one would have even known it was going on. Instead, the tryouts were done in plain view at Mosaic Stadium and on July 15 when the B.C. Lions came into town, they saw it themselves.

But no, the Riders got off fairly easily but Orridge’s swipe at them in his news release is something I’m not yet

ready to let go of.

But the bigger situation here is where the Saskatchewan Roughriders are going under Chris Jones. Personally I like his direction, but others in the Rider Nation do not.

I’m not going to go back into my monologue on how I’m sick of playing by the rules and losing while watching other teams break the rules and win. (Go back to Friday’s SportsCage podcast if you want to hear that). But the fact is Chris Jones is the CFL’s answer to New England’s Bill Belichik. He’s always going to find a way to use his influence, bend the rules, find the loopholes, or occasionally break the rules in order to consistently win.

That’s what I want in a Head Coach and in a General Manager.

And as far as this organization goes, any businessman would spend tens of thousand of dollars in order to make millions. That’s what winning does.

But the Riders are 1-6 under Jones you say? To that I ask you who was last year’s Grey Cup-winning Head Coach?

I thought so.

Zip it.

When I heard Craig Reynolds was racing home across the prairies from a vacation in B.C. in order to address reporters on Friday, I thought to myself, “He’d best Google some quotes from Patriots owner Robert Kraft before he gets here”.

Here’s an excerpt from an ESPN.com column from April 1/2008 when Belichik and the Patriots were nailed for “SpyGate”, the scandal involving the videotaping of other teams’ sideline signals: - “New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and coach Bill Belichick made the rounds on Tuesday, apologizing for and explaining Spygate.

In an emotional speech before NFL owners, Kraft and coach Belichick apologized for the franchise’s involvement in the scandal.

With apparent tension in the meeting room, Kraft asked for time to speak and apologized for Spygate in which a videographer was caught taping signals of Jets defensive coaches. After an investigation, the Patriots lost a first-round draft choice and $250,000 and Belichick was fined $500,000.

Kraft spoke of the values of the partnership with the league and how disappointed he was that his team brought negative attention to the league.

Colts coach Tony Dungy described the speech as heartfelt and excellent, saying “I appreciated what he had to say.”

Others who listened believed Kraft was speaking from the heart. Once Kraft was done talking, the entire room broke into applause.

Belichick also requested time to speak. As he told reporters earlier in the day, he accepted the punishment and thought that action showed no gray area in regard to the rules involving spying.

Since the season opener against the Jets, Belichick said he has changed the entire operation and is now moving forward with no misunderstanding.”

Ahem.

That sounds exactly what went down here on Friday.

By the way the Patriots have appeared in two Super Bowls since Spygate, winning once in 2015. And now their quarterback Tom Brady will serve a four-game suspension to begin this season for his role in DeflateGate.

That’s about all I have to say on that other than I’m glad Chris Jones is in charge here and hope he is for many, many years to come. I’ve had only one five-minute, “off the record” discussion with the

man but it’s clear our philosophies mesh.

And regarding Jeffrey Orridge and his claim that the Riders damaged the reputation of the CFL, well, that’s a very disappointing statement for the Commissioner to make.

The CFL had better look in its own backyard when it comes to the Mickey Mouse nature of this league. I could go on for days citing examples but the first one that comes to mind is the mole in the CFL office who leaked all this year’s draft picks to Sportsnet’s Justin Dunk on 2016 Draft Day, completely ruining TSN’s live Draft coverage. Perhaps Dunk was sitting in the league office himself and had access to the picks. Either way, TSN was livid. Not good for the CFL and to our knowledge, nothing was done about it.

What about the leak of the Riders’ chats with Greg Hardy, or the worst logo launch in the history of pro sports at last year’s Grey Cup in Winnipeg?

Those are just the public instances you all know about. What about the ones you don’t?

A lot of the finger-pointing in the CFL right now is being directed at the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the heartbeat of the league. The marquee franchise.

People around here are still furious at the nonPass Interference call against Naaman Roosevelt on the final play of the third quarter Saturday night, and a missed facemasking penalty against Darian Durant in the game’s waning moments.

If Stampeders defensive back Jamar Wall had been called for Pass Interference on Naaman Roosevelt upon review - which he should have been - the Riders would’ve carried the lead into the fourth quarter and who knows how the game would have played out after that?

Some “fans” are pointing out that TSN’s Glen Suitor stated that it wasn’t Pass Interference.

So what? When did Glen Suitor become the CFL’s Director of Officiating?

Besides, Suitor even said, “There was shoulderto-shoulder contact on the play”. Wall didn’t go for the ball. He KNOCKED ROOSEVELT OVER before the ball arrived. That should’ve been a black and white call, not left up to judgment.

That potentially game-changing call was made

out of the Command Centre at CFL head office in Toronto.

After the game Chris Jones and Rider linebacker Greg Jones alluded to the fact that non-call was a major factor in the outcome of the game. However they were smart enough not to say anymore.

So the Riders are 1-6. It is what it is. The prospects for the playoffs do not look good. The Chris Jones-led Roughriders will survive and ultimately thrive, but it might not be in 2016. I sometimes wonder if that was even the plan all along anyway.

And most of the anti-Roughrider bias these days seems to be coming out of CFL headquarters in Toronto, the very office which is overseen by one Jeffrey Orridge.

On Friday, September 16 Orridge will be in town for Plaza of Honor festivities. On the agenda is a Q&A. It should be fun.

People of Serbian origin are part of a large and well-established group of Canadian citizens whose presence in Canada dates back to the 1850s. Many of these first Serbian immigrants came to work in BC’s then-booming mining industry, settling massively in towns like Prince Rupert, Kamloops and Dawson City. By 1900, their province of choice was mostly Alberta, where they helped build some of Canada’s first roads and railways.

Between the two World Wars there was an upsurge in Serbian immigration to Canada following the tumultuous breakup of the Habsburg Empire. This period marked the birth of Ontario’s Serbian community. Today, Toronto is home to the largest Serbian community in the country, and the third largest outside Serbia.

Tennis champion Milos Raonic and Stanley Cup winner Milan Lucic—two of the hottest names in sports right now—are both Canadians of Serbian origin. Other notable Serbian Canadians include Mila Mulroney, current director of the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and wife of Canada’s 18th Prime Minister, and Boris Malagurski, a television host, filmmaker and activist. “Serving agriculture, the basic industry, this is George Atkins.” For 25 years, these words marked the end of CBC radio’s regular farming show, hosted by a man known as “the commentator with a smile in his voice.” In the pre-internet era, George Atkins’ know-how helped countless Canadian farmers stay in the loop. Today, his legacy benefits rural communities worldwide thanks to the non-profit organization he founded, Farm Radio International.

George Atkins’ childhood on the family farm near Oakville, Ontario helped lay the foundations for a lifelong passion. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree from the Ontario Agricultural College, he operated a small farm for a few years before beginning his career in broadcasting at Hamilton’s CHCH-TV. The CBC recruited Atkins in 1955 and made him the network’s farm and gardening host, a title that he kept until retiring in 1979.

Atkins first came up with the idea for Farm Radio International in 1975 during a trip to Zambia with other journalists. At the time, agriculture-themed radio programs in the small African country covered many of the same topics as they did in Canada: tractor maintenance, commercial fertilizers and new-fangled techniques. The problem, Atkins realized, was that this information was of no use to the vast majority of listeners, who were too poor to actually follow the advice. Farmers in the developing world could, however, benefit greatly from radio broadcasts that focused on issues relevant to their working conditions. All that was missing was a way to get such information to those who needed it—and George Atkins, lifelong farm radio host, knew exactly how to do so.

When Atkins launched Farm Radio International in 1979, his first order of business was to send free radio scripts to broadcasters in 26 developing countries. Today, the Ottawa-based organization produces scripts in over 70 languages and provides them to broadcasters in more than 100 countries, reaching 150,000 farmers each month.

And it all started with one Canadian radio host with a passion for farming and a smile in his voice.

Canada’s Penny an Olympic superstar

By Bruce Penton Canada’s sports editors won’t have to wait until December to send in their votes for this country’s female athlete of the year.

The penny coin might be history, but our Penny is making history.

Penelope (Penny) Oleksiak of Toronto went from a virtual unknown on the Canadian sports scene to an athlete with immediate first-name status during the first week of the Summer Olympics at Rio. Tiger. LeBron.

Arnie. Now Penny. And she’s only 16.

From Vancouver Island to Cape Spear, Newfoundland, Penny Oleksiak became an overnight sensation when she was part of a relay swim team that won Canada’s first medal at the Olympics in Rio and then proceeded to win three more, in-

cluding a gold in the 100-metre freestyle, on her own. No Canadian athlete has won more medals in one Summer Olympics.

While Oleksiak and the Olympics is all about winning, there is one loser in all this.

Golfer Brooke Henderson may want to send a note to Oleksiak saying a sarcastic ‘thanks’ for stealing the athlete-ofthe-year award from her grasp. Until Penny’s performance at Rio, Henderson and her No. 2 world ranking in women’s golf, and her major victory at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in June, had given her a virtual lock on the award.

Henderson has 2017 through 2019 to try to win the national award, but when 2020 comes around, it will be another opportunity for Oleksiak to shine on an Olympic stage. And according to Mark Tewksbury, a former Canadian Olympian, Oleksiak will be stronger and better in four years.

Meanwhile, major colleges in the U.S. are salivating at the thought of getting Oleksiak to attend and compete

for their NCAA schools for the next four years.

Some observers are suggesting, however, that Oleksiak could eschew college and turn professional. One estimate had her possibly earning a minimum of $250,000 in her first year from endorsements contracts with swimming gear companies alone. In Canada, her smiling face would also likely show up in commercials for banks and major companies such as Canadian Tire, Tim Hortons and Sport Chek.

The most likely future for Oleksiak, however, is schooling at a U.S. college, with great coaching, great competition and great preparation for 2020 in Tokyo. And a whack of additional medals to hang around her neck.

Visiting with the Lamoureaux and Olson family last week was Jake’s mother Reg Lamoureaux. She spent part of the week here before traveling back home to Valentine, Neb. Joe and Jean Bribois spent part of last

week visiting with son, Clinton and his friends in Winnipeg.

Visiting at the Wawota Museum recently were Sarah and Simon Witcombe of Codsall, England. Sarah’s mother was Ellen Rushby who was born in the Highview area in 1922.

So many are connecting with their roots!!

The Smulan Family were recently recognized with a Century Farm Award. The farm has been owned and operated by family

members for a hundred years or more! Quite an accomplishment!

Neil and Barbara Dennis hosted an Open Gate Day at their farm, Sunnybrae Acres on July 15th. They practice the Holistic Movement on their land.

This means working with nature, moving fences often to provide fresh vegetation for the animals, plant diversity, integrating the water cycle and much more.

More than 40 interested farmers attended.

Visitors with Neil and Karol McIntyre for three weeks (July 29 – August 18) were Ronald and Alinka Spijkers from The Hague, Holland.

Ronald was an exchange student in 1991 and had stayed with the McIntyre family at that time.

Pierre and Brenda Boutin enjoyed a holiday to the Black Hills, SD from July 3-9. Joining them there were daughter, Kristy, her husband Bret Howes and family (of Regina).

Their grandchildren Jenson and Sage spent the weeks of July 18-23 and August 8-12 holidaying at the farm and while here took swimming lessons, enjoyed spending time at the swimming pool and taking rides in the swather, sprayer and combine.

On August 8 Gordon and Anita Orsted (Brandon) visited with their daughters Brenda Boutin and Marcia Gervais and watched their great-grandchildren Jenson and Sage Howes participate in swimming lesson. While here they all met at the café to celebrate Marcia’s birthday.

Claire and Alice Mowchenko (Estevan) are holidaying at their grandparents Margaret and Brian Peet for a week (August 7-12) while Claire is taking swimming lessons. The girls are also spending some quality time with their cousins Connor and Cole Hoffman (Viking, AB) who were also holidaying at the grandparents taking swimming lessons. They all are

enjoying time spent at the swimming pool and doing different activities which includes time spent with the Peet boys at the farm, going to the Kenosee Waterslides, the Carlyle drive-in, etc.

Jeff Cowan (Regina) spent a couple of days (August 12-13) visiting at the farm with his parents Gray and Edel as well as with friends in the area, and attended an event held in Oxbow on Saturday before heading back to Regina on Sunday.

Adam Cowan (Estevan) is spending some time at the farm with his grandparents Gray and Edel Cowan and also visiting with Uncle Tim, Aunt Shelly and Ainsley. He will be helping Tim and Grandpa out during the harvest season for a time being.

Oh those Olympic Games are sure something special to watch and very interesting too. Our Canadian women have done exceptional well winning a total of 12 medals (as of Sunday 14th) and finally on Sunday evening our first male won a medal (there’s a chance for that more medals could be brought home this last week). Oh well if not I guess Canada has done extremely well as it is and there’s always another year to come.

Harvest is definitely upon us now, many are combining but the guys here are finishing up with swathing canola and getting the spraying done.
