Arcola Optimist Club hosts 26th Snowmobile Rally Submitted by Glen Lawson The Optimist Club of Arcola held its 26th Annual Snowmobile Rally on Saturday, January 26th 2019 with 256 riders registered for $10,000 in rider prizes.

The Optimist Trail was about 90 km long with the traditional check stop featuring smokies, hot dogs and hot chocolate sponsored

by Canadian Energy Services.

Riders returned to Prairie Place where they enjoyed beef on a bun at the concession sponsored by Ridgeline Agriservices and the Beer Gardens sponsored

by JJ Trucking.

The event started with breakfast be the Arcola Volunteer Fire Department.

The lottery for a choice of RVs from New Age Motorsports was drawn at 5:30 PM. First prizes was won by Chad Beattie from Carlyle.

Second and third prizes of $1000 were won by J Wiens from Lampman and Ryan Rutten from Carlyle.

Lifelong Kisbey-area farmer Hookenson to join the Saskatchewan Agriculture Hall of Fame

By David Willberg/ Estevan Mercury Agriculture has been a big part of Clarence Hookenson’s life since he was a baby.

He loves to farm, and agriculture has created opportunities for him that wouldn’t have otherwise existed.

Now the 98-yearold Kisbey resident is going to be inducted into the Saskatchewan Agriculture Hall of Fame.

The announcement was made earlier this month.

Hookenson grew up on the family farm near Kisbey, and has farmed on that parcel of land his entire life. They had horses at one time, and Hookenson was skilled with the animals.

He was starting to farm on his own when he joined the Canadian Army for the Second World War. When he returned from the war in 1945, he started farming again.

“It was a mixed farm.

We had cattle and grain,” Hookenson told Lifestyles. “At one time I had 400 cows, and we farmed about 4,000 acres, but eventually we cut the cow herd down.”

He still has around 25 pure-bread cattle in different locations.

Most of the farm was sold in 2004 after his son had a heart attack, but Hookenson still has around 700 acres.

“I just love farming. I love the outdoors,” said Hookenson, who experiences a lot of freedom when he’s out on the farm.

After the war, the family started using tractors, and the first combine he purchased was a Massey Ferguson for $2,813. The price of fuel back then was $0.18 per gallon, not per litre, he points out.

In the 1960s,

Hookeson started showing cattle at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair, including singles, groups of five and groups of 12. He won numerous awards at the event.

The Hookenson farm competed at the Royal cattle show in Toronto many times, starting in the 1960s.

Hookenson paid tribute to those who were on his crew at the Royal for the success he enjoyed.

“A lot of them were just guys who came to the farm and wanted a trip to the Royal,” said Hookenson. “Some of them went just the one year, but most of them went several years.”

And he became active in public life. In the 1950s, he became a councillor for the Rural Municipality of Brock, and became reeve in 1962.

“I spent 49 years in elected public office,” said Hookenson.

“I was a member of the Saskatchewan Federation of Agriculture and the Saskatchewan Municipal Hail Board for 27 years. I spent 11 years on the board of directors of the Veterinary College at Saskatoon (at the University of Saskatchewan). I was elected in 1978 as a (Canadian) Wheat Board advisor, and then elected again in 1982, and in 1986 I retired from that.”

He has been to meetings in every province, except NewfoundLabrador, and attended a World Agricultural Conference in Finlnd in 1979 and Norway in 1990. He was also part of a trade mission to Japan in 1990.

“We were fortunate over there, the hotel where we were staying in was advertising that the bread and buns came from No. 1 Cana-

dian wheat, and then on the other table, all their salad dressings came from Canadian canola.

About six years before that, I sold 25 purebread … heifers, and they went to Japan, so we had a chance to go on the mountainsides and have a look at their cattle.”

Hookenson said he is excited to be going into the Agriculture Hall of Fame. He was a founding member of the hall’s board, as it was secretary manager Gary Carlson who thought of starting a hall to recognize pioneers who came to the country in the 1880s, 1890s and early 1900s.

“They didn’t have anything to work with then,” said Hookenson.

“So the first group that was honoured was mostly from the 1800s.”

Five or six farmers have been inducted each year since then.

Hookenson knows many of those who have gone into the hall of fame already, and he believes he nominated six or seven of them.

And there are a lot of farmers, particularly the old-time farmers, who he believes would be worthy of the recognition.

Jack Wilson, a longtime friend of Hookenson’s, was the one who nominated Hookenson for the hall. In the nomination, he pointed out Hookenson’s many avenues of service, ranging from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan to his work as a member of the rural municipality council.

Wall’s PAC involvement raises questions

By Murray Mandryk When politicians are done being politicians, should they be done with politics?

The obvious answer would seem to be no. Once out of formal public life, they should be like anyone else and get to do whatever they want.

But it may be a bit more complicated than that.

The reason we have conflict of interest rules for politicians while they are in office is the prevent situations where those we elect start making decisions for their own benefit.

And we have determined, and rightly so, that such conflict rules should be extended to life immediately after politics.

After all, it would be wrong to have a prime minister, premier or high-ranking cabinet walk out of political life straight into a corporate office or union executive role and exercise on behalf of his or her new employer.

For that reason, we have a cooling off period of about a year for those leaving public office. The only question is whether the cooling off period should be longer.

Finally, let us recognize that there also direct ties between right-wing parties and corporations and left-wing parties and labour. All one has to do is look at campaign donations to see that.

But neither business nor labour ever seems especially satisfied exercising their influence strictly through donations. (And that is something thats getting harder to do in most provinces other than Saskatchewan where there are no limits to campaign contributions.)

So one of the creative solutions are organizations that run parallel to parties that are known as Political Action Committees (PACs).

PACs, which have long-existed in U.S. politics, they dont exist to exercise direct influence for specific businesses. However, they do exist to play a big role in influencing government policy like lower taxes for businesses.

As such, they provide an added advantage to parties by doing things parties cant afford to do or dont strategically want to do.

This takes us to what former Saskatchewan premier Brad Wall has been up to since leaving politics a year go.

He has been travelling from Swift Current to Calgary to work as a special adviser at the law firm of Osler, Hoskins & Harcourt LLP. But Wall has also been giving public speeches opposing the federal carbon tax and Bill C-69 business says will impose strict environmental regulations on pipeline development. Such policies are justifying the feelings of western alienation, Wall is saying in his speeches.

Wall has also helped found and raise money for a Canadian PAC called the Buffalo Project “[Buffalo Project] was spawned from some thoughts of ex-premier Brad Wall, Calgary businessman Bill Turnbull, one of six businessmen who helped found Project Buffalo, told the CBCs Adam Hunter. There were a group of us in Calgary who were becoming very concerned.”

Turnbull went on to stress Project Buffalo is not a separatist group, but is concerned with the way the Liberal government was driving Western separatist sentiments, something Wall has addressed a lot in in his speeches.

“We all thought that the brightest tool in the shed was ex-premier [Wall] to talk about these issues, Turnbull told Hunter. We made overtures to him and the Buffalo Project was created “Brad’s involvement early on was to help us formulate this. To pull a larger group than the founding group together in hopes to raise some money so that we could make a difference.”

Many may find little wrong with this way of doing things and many will agree with the sentiments behind Project Buffalo.

But does it raise questions about PACs and what role ex-politicians should play in fronting them? Do we want this in our political system?

At the very least, Walls new lobbyist job gives us something to ponder.

When sharing was something special “Mom, look this way.” Ugh. My oldest daughter was getting set to take a family selfie on our summer holiday. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad we have the pictures, it’s just that the whole set up of getting a decent group selfie (correction: usie, wefie, or groufie) is…well, rather ridiculous.

You have to simultaneously lean/squat/stretch and strain to Shelley Luedtke get your heads positioned correctly all the while looking like the blissful and carefree vacationers you want to capture. Due to the closeness of the phone, limited by the arm length of the one taking the shot, noses and chins can look rather disproportionate, or the angle is decidedly unflattering which then sparks the call to immediately delete it.

Selfies are nothing new. The term can be traced back about 16 years but the practice goes back to the 1830’s. The first self-portrait required photographer Robert Cornelius to uncover the lens, run into the shot and hold a pose for three or more minutes. Yes, minutes.

In 1920 a photographer held a camera at arm’s length and gathered other men into the shot. The reason we know it happened in this manner is because another photographer took a picture of the group shot as it was occurring. There is photographic evidence to verify this group selfie. That picture is now part of a larger collection tracing the history of the genre—yes, genre. Selfies have been classified as a genre unto itself.

The picture taken 100 years ago required a tremendous amount of time and equipment. Today they are easy to create and share, and give us total control over the way we want to present ourselves to the world thanks to filters, editing, and of course the delete button.

Then again, perhaps this is what we do every day without being fully aware of it. We put on the public

face, present the image we believe is expected, and do our best to filter out what we think others won’t want to see, or know, or even…accept. If we have people in our lives willing to push past the image to find out what’s really going on, we can be particularly grateful. It means there are people wanting to invest in who we really are—not who we want others to think we are.

Some might find humor in remembering sitting through someone’s vacation slides or sifting through stacks of photos of the new baby, or the neighbor’s family reunion or a graduation. But something was going on beyond the sharing of images. It was people gathered together to hear stories, to ask questions and to share in something that was so meaningful they wanted to share it with others.

Sharing with someone is such a special activity. It is an act of giving. It involves taking something and dividing it among those you are with. It is including others and having them be a part of something with us. We learned to share as children.

It may have been hard at times but we reaped the joy in sharing our toys which made playing so much more fun. As we grew older we saw the blessing in taking what we have and making other people part of it. It bears little resemblance to what we do now; posting something on-line and waiting for the validation from others to come rolling in.

Repeated studies over the last five years indicate that an increasing number of photos being posted on-line is correlated with lower levels of social support and connectedness with friends. In an effort to let everyone know what we are doing we are spending less time doing anything with those very people.

Pictures can capture a moment and preserve it, and they can also convey a message, but we can’t let the pictures we post replace communication. Instead of asking people to observe our lives on a digital platform we also need to engage with others in a manner that lets us see what’s happening behind the smiles and between the shots. Rather than “I’m here, look at me,” it could be “I’m here, let’s share.”

That’s my outlook.

RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons A shout out to the plow operators and snow removal crews. Without them our roads would be less safe and due to their efforts our job as Police Officers is less difficult.

As it relates directly to the Town of Carlyle Crew we would like to thank them for keeping main street clear. It ensures drivers have visibility to see pedestrians and keeps things clear around the intersections which undoubtedly prevents collisions.

We always seem to have alarms, and this week was no different.

We had both residential and business alarms.

A Bobcat was vandalized in Moose Mountain Provincial Park. The owner has no suspects, however, feels it was because they locked the fuel tanks after they noticed some fuel missing and this annoyed a prospective theif. Another vehicle was vandalized inside a shop where a sewage truck normally parks on White Bear. No suspects in either case.

An individual chose to threaten and assault another individual which resulted in charges and they remained in custody for Court on Wednesday. This subject was released on conditions, however, the same meal twice a day for more than 2 days would be enough to make me to change my habits.

Members responded to another assault, however, there was no

cooperation from the victim. That said the accused was arrested and lodged for Mischief.

They denied being intoxicated and demanded a breathalyzer test.

Members refused, being we knew they were highly intoxicated. (Not our first rodeo) The individual was lodged and flushed their socks down the toilet. The remaining clothing was taken and they were provided what can be best described as a gown that can not be ripped and will not fit in the toilet. Thus we were able to ensure no more clothing went down the drain. They alleged the arresting Member injured them on arrest, however, did not realize the Supervisor they were complaining to was the Member that arrested them. Remember they were not “Intoxicated”???? The Supervisor called the subject a liar, which only confused the subject more, like how did the supervisor know they were a liar? They were provided a ride home , however, they were never told how the “wise” supervisor knew they were a liar.

Another conflict between two individuals resulted in one individual being lodged until sober in the Crow Bar Hotel. This is not the manner in which we like to resolve things, however, it was resolved for a few hours.

An argument between a couple resulted in one of the two going for a walk to cool off.

With this cold weather I don’t think they had to walk long. The individual that cooled off was confirmed to be safe.

We assisted other

Police agencies and Saskatchewan Justice serving subpoenas.

We investigated a complaint of harassment, which was just two people not getting along.

If someone is calling you and texting you and you don’t want it to continue there are some steps to take before you call the Police.

First ask them to stop, if it does not stop, or even if it does stop, block the number. If it continues, then call us. More often than not when we get involved we find out nobody has told anybody to stop.

A Diamond Tennis bracelet was lost at the Arcola Buck Night. If you found it please bring it to the RCMP so we can return it to the rightful owner.

If you know someone is doing something that they should not be doing, why not call the Police? We need the public to help us make our community a safer and more positive place to live.

There are people that do help and with the assistance of one of these people we were able to get a driver off the road that is Disqualified for medical reasons. Like really, do we want someone medically unfit to be driving? We did not charge the driver, we just towed the vehicle so they can’t continue driving.

We received an anonymous call of an impaired driver. We prefer not to get anonymous calls being it is hard to call back and get more info. We knew the information to be credible but could not find

We received another anonymous call of a single vehicle collision involving an impaired driver. Patrols were made by Carlyle Detachment, Carlyle Traffic Services and Moosomin Detachment to no avail.

Can you believe the caller was upset with us for asking for more information.

We had two more calls of possible impaired drivers, one went south at Stoughton but we could not find it and another resulted in a vehicle being found in the ditch, however, we were unable to identify the driver.

Members are investigating allegations of spousal sexual assault and assault. Remember folks “No means NO” If the other dance partner does not want to dance, then there is no dance.

If your friend “borrows” your vehicle and you don’t know where your friend is, or your vehicle, maybe choose your friends better.

That said we are somewhat knowledgeable and aware about who is who in the Zoo per say and we think drugs are involved in this incident.

If someone is in custody and a family member passes away and their is a funeral we assist Provincial Corrections and Federal Corrections by providing a facility to lodge any family members that are in custody. We did so the weekend after this report. We do so willingly being even though one is in custody they still

deserve the opportunity to attend a funeral for a loved one.

Slang we use: “Crow Bar Hotel” - Gaol or Jail depending on how you like to spell it, “Buffalo Cab” - Police Vehicle, “Unmarked, Ghost Car, Spook” - Fully equiped Police Vehicle without markings, DIPP - drunk in public place.

BOLO - be on the look out.

Slang the public uses: Police Officer - Po Po, Pigs, Bacon, Mounties, Queen’s Cowboys, Cop’s, Coppers, the five “O”, and in Quebec “Poulets” Not sure how we can be chickens and pigs, but what do I know? I am apparently “Stupid, dumb, and clueless” We had an individual break down on the highway and Members attended. Edgy who is always helping helped again. He is a benefit to our community.

A friendly reminder, if you don’t have a licence or you are a suspended driver don’t drive. If you choose to drive do not break a further law, like speed, fail to stop at a stop sign or drive an unregistered motor vehicle. It you then get caught don’t get mad at the Police Officer for giving you a ticket or towing your vehicle. We are just doing our job and it was not us that put you in the position you are in. Let us just say this has been happening a fair amount lately. For those that don’t know we have Automated Licence Plate Readers on our Traffic Vehicles and they

automatically run every licence plate through the computers in the vehicles.

We already know that “We have better things to do” , “We should be catching real Criminals” and “We should be arresting rapists and murders”, so you don’t have to remind us. That said, we also get to give out tickets. All part of the job.

Tickets were issued for no insurance - $580, stop sign - $230, fail to produce drivers licence - $100, fail to wear seatbelt - $175, cell phone use - $280, window tint - $115, speeding with the most expensive being two for $584 and one for $854 (Ouch).

Inspection Notices were issued for inadequate windshields, day time running lights, remove window tint, inadequate mudflaps or fenders, replace rear lights for licence plate and calibrate speedometer.

Warnings were issued for fail to produce drivers licence, speeding, obstructed licence plate, tail light fail to emit red light, follow too close, inadequate headlamps, fail to have licence plate adequately secured, visible or legible, fail to use headlights at night or in poor visibility, and pass when unsafe.

Please take the time to occasionally check your tires for tread, day time running lights, head lights and tail lights. This ensures you are operating a vehicle that is safe for the roads.

From Page 3 - Clarence Hookenson “I remember Clarence achieved as reeve to allow all the ratepayers a voice in decision-making,” Wilson wrote in his nomination. “He started the first ratepayers’ supper in the area.”

He also pointed out that Hookenson worked with the forest industry at Indian Head, which allowed many farmers to get trees from there to start a lot of yard sites in the area.

Hookenson always kept up with the latest technology and equipment, and went all over the area to raise funds to build a community rink.

Even at the age of 98, Wilson pointed out that Hookenson volunteers

his time and machinery to cut grass around his community.

“He works hard at keeping the area growing with good ideas to motivate people to move into the area,” said Wilson.

And Hookenson was always taking many young and aspiring cattlemen under his wing to teach them showmanship skills, and even took some of them to the Toronto Royal Winter Fair.

Wilson was among those who attended the fair.

“These young adults saw what a world class show was like and went on to showing their own cattle. Many of them have careers in the cattle

industry.”

Hookenson also judged all breeds of cattle, bull sales, and market cattle across Western Canada, at 4H achievement days and at the Canadian Western Agribition in Regina.

He became an accomplished judge and evaluator of cattle.

“Clarence is an honest fair individual,” wrote Wilson. “He will always listen to both sides of the story.”

The SAHF held its first induction ceremony in 1972. Each year, the organization formally An induction ceremony will happen April 27 in Saskatoon.

It’s been a fairly quiet week in Alida this past week (January 21-26) – not too much activity happening around town or at the rink. The get-together on Fun Friday did see many out enjoying the skating ice as well as others enjoying a card game or two.

Parry and Lynette Peet were in Humboldt over the weekend (January 23-26) where they watched Lynette’s sister Amber Holland play in the Saskatchewan Women’s Provincial Playoffs. Unfortunately Amber did not make it to the finals on Sunday.

On Jan. 25 Tim Cowan accompanied his daughter Ainsley on a school skiing trip to Assissipi Ski Resort in Manitoba with other students from Redvers School.

The “Breakfast at the Rink” this past Sunday (January 27) had Kitchen group #4 serving up 37 breakfasts – good job done guys and gals. The total for the Breakfast Challenge remains at 54. The attendance was down again this week, which was probably due to the weather as it wasn’t very nice – snowing and windy another C.O.L.D. day. Next

week it is back to Kitchen group #1 at the helm – see you at the rink.

The Alida Curling Club is busy accepting names for the Oilmen’s Bonspiel. They now have four teams registered and are hoping for maybe a couple more if at all possible.

Just a reminder that we’ll likely see you at the rink on Friday – as it is Fun Friday again where one can enjoy skating, cards and watch a good game of curling as the bonspiel will be on., and of course there’s always good camaraderie among everyone there – see you at the rink.

I’m going to send out a distress call on of these days if I can’t finish up this “blinkity blankity” jigsaw puzzle soon. I’ve had it a couple of years and decided that I should do it – but I should have had my head examined instead, or at least paid attention when I was told it was hard. Started it Jan. 20 and I’m still at it. However, I will say on my behalf that I don’t sit at it from the moment I’m mobile in the morning to when I hit the pillow at night– I’d go cross-eyed

Visiting with Denis and Norma Lamontagne during the holidays were Dennis and Lea Kuchner of Swift Current, SK, Mike and Michele Taillon, Sam and Jake of Calgary, AB and Rennee Lamontagne and Emett of Canmore, AB. Also joining the festivities were Evan and Mac Lamontagne of Saskatoon, Paul Lamontagne and Lisa Hrabarchuk and Lisa’s daughter, Taylor. On Dec. 23 they had several outdoor family photos taken.

Doris Erickson continues to lead us in sitting exercises, crafts, card bingo and floor curling, and members of the staff call regualr Bingo. Cozy rooms and bundles of books from the town Library help to shut out the cold.

Charlotte Kovach, in the absense of Roy Bortolotto, brought us worship service from the United Church. Sunday evening the Kola Youth Group of 11 young people sang their favorite hymns. They are led by our caregiver Sandra Dick and her brother.

Last night the seniors of Kola Church were with us.

Mary Braun reminded us that ``Seniors are Priceless Antigues.`` ``Harold and Cheryl Friesen led the music. Viola, daughter of the late Nettie Klassen, sang beautiful solos, and her husband, Ron Kroeker, spoke of the Joy of God`s creation.

Other visitors during the week included: Sherry Wilson, Andrea and Marek Koseier, visiting Ruth Holmstrom and Mildred; Morley Longman; Jean Bogner, visiting Ruth Dennis; Lorraine Dumaine, with Grace, Joe and Shirley Blaise. Irene Husband had a new great grandson, Kitt, from Brandon, with Kelly Nichols and Ty Taylor; plus Currie from Carlyle and Debbie Sorenson.

We are excited to welcome Jason Barnachea’s family to Wawota. Jason travelled to the Philippines at Christmas and returned to Wawota with his wife, Ransel, children, Sanjo (8), Sanneyah (6) and Sandrea (2). Jason has been here for three years and works at Moose Mountain Meats. We hope they will enjoy their new home.

Dale and Shelly Easton, Erika Easton and Peter and Vonda Dunn of Beaumont, AB enjoyed a holiday to Hawaii recently.

Amy Romeril from Lethbridge, AB is visiting with her sister, Sara and her aunt, Deb Saville.

Word has been received of the passing of The Rev. Ross McMurtry of Weyburn. He was 92 years old.

He was a newly ordained minister when he arrived at the Wawota United Church in 1951. He spent 5 years here then 4 in Humboldt and the last 30 years of his ministry at Grace United in Weyburn.

Ross and Frances had five children, Elaine, Marsha, Leslie, Kenneth and Bill. Ross kept in touch with Wawota residents and his last visit was last year when Lorne Calvert spent an afternoon of reminiscing with us and sharing a meal. Ross often commented of his fond memories of Wawota and Wawota had many fond memories of him.

There’s sooooo much yellow! But it is challenging – do wish me luck! Hubby isn’t much help, even if he does try to find the odd piece, he enjoys playing on his ham radios instead – and that’s good, keeps him out of my hair.

Did you watch curling on television this past week?? It’s interesting to see the excellent curling done by these women trying out for their Provincial title and we’ll see them again during the Tournament of Hearts. Sure do wish they’d show us the Saskatchewan playoffs sometime instead of the other provinces. Sorry to hear that Amber missed out this time, at least there’s always next year and I’m sure we’ll see her back at the top. I was hoping that Sherry Anderson would take the title, but it wasn’t to be – Robyn Silvernagle and her team (Stefanie Lawton, Jesse Hunkin, Kara Thevenot) won by 6-5 score – gee that would have been a great game to watch. Go Saskatchewan Go. God gets to have favorites As I was watching the January 19 World Financial Group Curling from Las Vegas I saw celebrity curlers the likes of Kaitlyn Law, Rachel Homan, Jennifer Jones and others sitting in the front row watching the men’s tournament. In the second row I saw an ordinary fan, a woman, looking unimportant.

And I thought to myself, “She is God’s favorite one.”

Like you and me, she is a favorite one of God. If you were the only person needing salvation, Jesus would have died for you. In fact, he did. We are God’s special saints in the making.

In our hearts we know this to be true.

God loves each of us the most. As parents, we love our children equally. As a teacher I could not allow myself to have “teacher’s pets”. But my understanding of all this changed when I became a grandfather.

Each of my grandchildren is my favorite.

I get to love them more as I get to know them better. I know some of them better because of

more time spent with them. It is not like that with God. He knew us before we were born.

“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you” Jeremiah 1:5.

And in Psalm 2:7 God speaks: “You are my son, this day I have begotten you.” As we become brothers and sisters of Christ, we become the children of God. Today, God has begotten us. This is a mystery to be appreciated. But oh, we are so human!

Lady “Jenny”, a local beauty, sits in the church being admired. Her lacy bonnet is being admired by those around her, she thinks. But Poet Robbie Burns sees a lowly louse is speeding across her bonnet. She tosses her head to her admirers.

“O wad some Power the giftie gie us To see oursels as ithers see us! It wad frae mony a blunder free us, An’ foolish notion: What airs in dress an’ gait wad lea’e us” Seeing ourselves as others see us might save us from some blunders but seeing ourselves as God sees us would make

all the difference. God loves us more because of our weaknesses. In much the same way a grandparent has to have more love and patience for an errant child.

And God has that unfailing love for each of us. In a Rich Mullins song “We Are Not As Strong As We Think We Are” we hear: We are frail We are fearfully and wonderfully made Forged in the fires of human passion Choking on the fumes of selfish rage And with these our hells and our heavens So few inches apart We must be awfully small And not as strong as we think we are When you love you walk on the water Just don’t stumble on the waves We all want to go there somethin’ awful But to stand there it takes some grace ‘Cause oh, we are not as strong As we think we are But with God’s Grace we will do wonderfully well.

Why do birds sing?

Such a simple question but as I’ve mulled over this query, the answer doesn’t seem as obvious as I thought it would be.

(Lest you wonder what other odd topics my mind seems to pursue, this one was prompted by a small poster that’s been hanging above my desk for several years).

This little piece of light cardboard, printed with a photo of a bird in song, is enhanced with these words: “A bird does not sing because it has an answer but because it has a song.”

(Chinese Proverb) I’d become so used to seeing those words in front

of me, I’d almost forgotten them. This week, however, they took on new and inspirational meaning.

But first, a bit of background. As I’m sure most, if not all my readers know, I reside on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. Right on the edge of the West Coast of British Columbia, to be exact. Within a few minutes walking distance from the Pacific, we are treated to early spring weather, following the fury of lashing torrents of wind and rain that characterize our winters. Right now, our local “music” is being provided by hundreds of California sea

lions lounging on a long breakwater of rocks. We hear them, many hours of the day, as they proclaim their enjoyment of an abundant crop of fish before they head south again.

On the other hand, birds such as the one shown on that postcard, send out their messages of beauty quietly but eloquently. “I don’t know the answers,” they warble, “But God has given me a song that needs to be sung.”

Do you need some answers today? Has your song died?

I challenge us to change our questions from “Why?”, to “Thank You, Lord, for giving me a song to sing.”

Yellow Vest convoy to Ottawa organizer says it’s full steam ahead for February

By Brian Zinchuk Pipeline News While one of two planned convoys to Ottawa has been scrapped, the other is full steam ahead.

The two protest convoys started organizing close to the same time. One called itself the Yellow Vest (Official) Convoy to Ottawa, and the other was being organized by a coalition of groups including Canada Action and Rally 4 Resources. The second one bowed out on Jan. 14.

Glen Carritt, a member of the Innisfail town council, has taken up the reins on the Yellow Vest convoy. He also owns and operates OP Fire & Safety based in Innisfail, Alta, and operates in Grande Prairie, Airdrie/Calgary, Fort St. John and Estevan.

Asked what is going on, Carritt said, “Right from the get-go, before I even decided to really get on board with doing this, I reached out to all the groups that were involved, including Canada Action and R4R (Rally 4 Resources), which are, of course, the same, and I asked if we could work together. Let’s just work together, you can do your own thing, but let’s make sure the coordination is working. This is a big, huge logistical nightmare that we’re trying to work with. And right from the get-go, they really didn’t want to associate with the Yellow Vests. And I tried to convince them, saying you can do your own thing. You don’t have to fly the yellow vests, let’s just make sure we’re communicating and being on the same page.

“They went out of their way trying to discredit Yellow Vests, by portraying that we were radicals, et cetera, in some of their newscasts. We still maintained the high road here. We respect your decision not to fly the yellow vest, but they just didn’t want to work with us,” he said.

He said he and his team have been working on getting the logistics sorted out for making this protest convoy happen. Carritt also felt the other convoy was not as far along in their preparations, and suggested that may have been a reason for them bowing out.

“We’re full steam ahead. We’ve got all that stuff handled. We’re stopping in Regina,” Carritt said.

He also added the convoy will stay overnight in Regina the night of Feb. 14 and depart the morning of

“We went ahead and registered our protest.

We’re leaving a day early,” he said, noting that the departure date from Red Deer is now Feb. 14, not Feb. 15. It gives one to two days of contingency for bad weather. “We’re due to arrive Feb. 19, in Ottawa.” The rally is expected to be a three-day event, with trucks starting their way back on Feb. 22.

“There’s one highway, with 1,000 trucks, so there will be a convoy coming back,” he said. But the return will be somewhat more loosely coordinated, as some drivers may drive shifts on the way back with multiple drivers.

Letters have been sent to every premier in the

country, inviting them to speak. There’s a limit to how many units they’ll be able to get at Parliament Hill. Trucks will also have to park elsewhere.

They’re not going to be able to totally clog Ottawa.

“There’s going to be some congestion, that’s for sure,” he said.

And trucks won’t be parked on Parliament Hill for three days, either. He’s working with Ron Barr in Ottawa for organizing that portion.

“We want to make sure it’s peaceful, but also that we’re heard. This is about bringing Canadians together. It’s a way of demonstrating and getting attention, so we can voice our concerns on Parliament Hill, all of us,” Carritt said.

assisted goal to end the period. Yellow Grass made it a 5-1 game in the second with 3 goals being scored by their big guns.

It was a quick game to watch and the Cougars worked hard trying to get any chance they could to put one on net.

The game ended in an 8-2 victory for the Wheat Kings as they were able to net 3 more and Cooper Fox, with the assist from Ty Currie, got the lone Cougar goal in the third.

Saturday, Jan. 26, was a must win for the Cougars as they were on the road to Midale.

A win would keep them out of the bottom half of the standings and into a guaranteed play-off position.

The previous seven times that these two teams have met, the Cougars have lost by only one goal! It was also time to turn the tables on that record. Giving the Cougars the lead off the bat, with both goals being scored in the first 6 minutes were, Cooper Fox and Brett Turgeon. Assisting their goals were: Kelly Currie, Tyler Fleck (with assists on both goals) and Ty Currie. Midale wanted to keep their streak against the Cougars going and Burk got them on the board before the first ended.

Midale’s only goal that was scored in the second was on a penalty shot, as Burk scored again. Audet has had a number of penalty shots taken on him this year and has been a brick wall!

The PureChem Cougars suffered an 8-2 loss to the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings on Jan. 24.

On Jan. 26 the Cougars travelled to Midale for game action in a must win situation. They battled hard and earned the 6-4 win. each netting one in the second.

Morrision, McLean and Belanger got the helpers.

It was a 4-2 game heading into the third.

Both teams wanted this one bad and neither team was letting up. Midale made it 4-3, just two minutes into the third.

Belanger replied, sneaking one in with

help from Geiger and Lequyer. There were 5 minutes left, when Midale’s Lindenback, netted one, closing the gap to 1 goal.

Veteran, Kelly Currie, secured the win, scoring with under 2 minutes left. Josh Brown and Cooper Fox got the assists. The onegoal curse has ended!

The Cougars head back up in the standings with 22 points, along with Carnduff and Redvers.

Red-hot Flames eyeing Cup chase

Bruce Penton How dominant would the Calgary Flames be if James Neal wasn’t playing like Neal James, the 54-year-old overweight right-winger on an old-timers hockey team in Saskatoon who sometimes goes over on his ankles and has trouble raising the puck?

The Flames’ Neal was signed last summer to a five-year contract worth more than $5 million a year, decent money for a proven — at least 20 goals in each of the past 10 seasons — sniper.

Guided by a new coach, Bill Peters, and led by Johnny Gaudreau, who has blossomed into an NHL superstar, the Flames

are running away with the Western Conference and could be destined to bring a Stanley Cup to the Stampede City for the first time since 1989.

The Grey Cup already resides in Calgary; there’s room on the city’s trophy shelf for Stanley, too.

The Flames have been on fire all year, with 33 wins in 51 games at the all-star break.

They were the only team’to have five players with 50 or more points; the only one with four players with 20 or more goals. And if Neal was scoring at a standard James Neal pace instead of his pathetic five in 49 games, those team numbers would be even more impressive.

Calgary’s wide lead in the Western Conference standings has been led by the second-best offence in the league and a solid defence led by Norris Trophy contender Mark Giordano.

When Neal signed in the off-season, many

assumed he would flank the wing with Calgary’s top line of Gaudreau and Sean Monahan. Instead, Peters has linked those two stars with Elias Lindholm, a player Peters coached last year in Carolina. That Flames trio had 192 points at the all-star break, second only to Colorado’s red-hot Nathan McKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog, who had 199. Neal, coming off last year’s 25-goal season with Vegas Golden Knights, may be pouting about being taken off the Flames’ big line, and getting only secondary power play minutes. Or maybe at age 31 he’s just slowing down, content to collect his U.S. $28.75 million through 2023 as he goes through the motions.

Perhaps Neal will pick up the pace in the second half of the season. Or maybe he’s saving himself for a long playoff run, which the Flames are almost certain to have.

When the Stampeders begin defence of their grey Cup in June, the Flames might just be winding down their chase for Lord Stanley’s mug. It would be quite the Cowtown double play.

Agriculture diversity in Canada

By Calvin Daniels Even though I have covered agriculture as a significant part of my job for the past three decades, I am still at times surprised by the level of diversity in the sector in this country.

A case in point is the developing story of potatoes in Manitoba.

Like many, I have always thought of Prince Edward Island as the primary place in terms of the pro-

duction of spuds in this country.

And, for years and years that has been the case.

But like wheat, long the primary crop on the Canadian Prairies giving way to canola in recent years, it appears the potato crown is about to be moved from PEI to Manitoba.

Two things are converging to signal the change.

The first has Simplot spending $400 million to expand its french fry processing plant in Portage la

- Saskatchewan 4-H is once again offering a photo contest for all 4-H members. The categories are Nature, People, Animals, Action Shots and Hands to Larger Services. All 4-H members are eligible to

enter. Cloverbuds and Juniors are together in one class, Intermediate and Seniors in another class, and then Adults. Your photos have to be submitted electronically before April 30th, 2019.

- Challenges for the month of January/February is “Find Out More About 4-H”. There will be random Q & A sessions on social media in January/February.

- Myrna showed the members a flashback picture of 3 past Cloverbud members.

PROJECT REPORTS WERE GIVEN BY: Best of Bakery – Jill Bayliss, Outdoor Living – Dereck Nordin, Self Determined, Cloverbud 1 – Rayah Lovell, Babysitting, Sheep – Eli Bartlett, Be My Guest – Jill Bayliss, Sewing – Teanna Hubbard, Photography – McKenzie Lovell, and Cake Decorating Rayah Lovell showed the members a picture of the milking machine that Kenton Reischke uses that belonged to her grandfather.

The members enjoyed eating the pizzas that they made with Pamela Bartlett. They played Pictionary and Charades and had their Christmas gift exchange. The members then went to the Carnduff Curling Club and had fun curling.

Pee Wee Cougars gearing up for provincial play Danielle Benjamin Sports Contributor Our Peewee Cougars have had a busy few weeks.

We have been busy playing a lot of league games, an exhibition game, and practices. We are gearing up for our Provincial run where we will face off against Moosomin in the first round. Wish us luck!

Here’s a recap of games played:

Prairie. The larger factory, double the size of the existing plant, will be operational in early 2020, and that will signal a need for Manitoba producers to plant some 16,000 more acres of potatoes.

The additional acres won’t quite bring the overall Manitoba acreage to that on PEI where about 85,000 acres are planted, but since yields are generally better in Manitoba the production crown will shift.

While the passing of the torch in terms of potato production is probably not hugely impactful in term of overall Canadian farm production, it does again help to illustrate how crop production can change over time.

Such change is usually driven by advancements in crop genetics which allow crops to move into none traditional areas and be grown successfully.

That evolution of a crop is perhaps most dramatically seen in Western Canada in terms of canola, once thought of as a crop confined to northern areas of the Prairies, new varieties have expanded its potential growing area across almost all areas of the region, and into the northern United States.

While genetics has pushed canola south, the same type of crop development efforts have expanded corn and soybeans north, the latter finding success into the area of eastern Saskatchewan up to the Yellowhead Highway.

At present, the crop expansion merely opens doors to greater crop diversification, but longer term, maybe not as long as most hope or imagine, it will be critical as the effects of climate change become more pronounced.

There are those who might want to argue the cause of climate change, and might even suggest it is natural as opposed to manmade, but the reasons won’t alter the impact of the changes as they occur.

Only changes in how we manage the new climate and what we grow where will matter.

Strong manufacturing and wholesale trade sales in November According to reports released by Statistics Canada today, Saskatchewan had strong manufacturing and wholesale trade sales in November 2018, both year-over-year and month-to-month.

Saskatchewan’s manufacturing sector sales were up 10.7 per cent (seasonally adjusted) from last November, the highest percentage rise among the provinces and well ahead of the 2.7 per cent posted nationally. Compared to October, manufacturing sales were up 3.3 per cent, the second best increase

when compared with other provinces, and above the 1.4 per cent decline for the national rate.

Manufacturing sales totalled $1.5 billion in November 2018.

Wholesale trade growth also ranked the highest in Canada in November, rising 4.5 per cent (seasonally adjusted) from the previous month, ahead of the -1.0 per cent decline recorded nationally. Year-overyear wholesale trade increased by 10.3 per cent, the second highest percentage increase among the prov-

inces.

Wholesale trade totalled $2.4 billion in November 2018.

“Nation leading growth in manufacturing sales and wholesale trade are indicators that Saskatchewan’s economy is remaining resilient in the face of headwinds,” Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “Coupled with recent strong job numbers, we are optimistic that in 2019 our economy will continue to grow and create opportunity for Saskatchewan people.”

How to keep warm in your home in extreme cold weather Have your furnace inspected before cold weather arrives. Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter, and check the thermostat to see if it’s working properly.

Inspect fireplaces, and chimneys before using, and have them cleaned if needed.

Keep drapes and blinds closed, except when windows are in direct sunlight.

Put up storm windows, or install sheet plas-

tic window insulation kits on the inside of windows.

Cover or remove any window air conditioners.

Insulate electrical outlets and switches on exterior walls with foam seals available at home centers.

Caulk any cracks or holes on the outside of your house.

Repair or replace weather stripping and thresh-

olds around doors and windows.

Run paddle ceiling fans on low in reverse (clockwise when looking up) to circulate warm air.

Put draft snakes on window sills, between window frames, and against doors.

If you heat with propane or fuel oil, make sure the tank is full.

If you heat with wood or coal, have plenty of fuel on hand.

The family of Al Heidinger sadly announces his passing at Moose Mountain Lodge, Carlyle, Sask. on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at the age of 80 years.

Al’s memory will be forever cherished by his wife Loretta Heidinger; daughter Wanda (Jean) Richaud; sons, Brent (Naomi) Heidinger and Michael (Kari) Heidinger; grandchildren, Jeryn (Cody) Tanner and their children, Aiden, Hannah and Brooke; Brettyn (Alex) Campbell and their daughter Aria; Brandon (Danya) Heidinger and their children, Peyton and baby Scarlet; Dalton Heidinger, Keegan Heidinger, Harley Heidinger and Heidi Heidinger.

Al will also be lovingly remembered by his brother Ray (Helen) Heidinger, sister Isabelle (Stan) Peter and sisters-in-law, Kathy Heidinger and Leona (Heidinger) Walters, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Katherine; brothers, John, Joe, Jake and Jerry; sisters, Rose (John) Milos and Irene (Will) Hilts; nephew Randy Heidinger; his in-laws, Joe and Jenny Kap�hamer; brothers-in-law Lewis Schopf, Albert Schopf, Richard Heidinger and Harvey Walters; sister-in-law Leona Kap�hamer, and his dear friends, Rev. Louis Kubash, Rev. David Banga and Rev. Gordon Rushka.

The Prayer Service was held on Friday, January 25, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. and the Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. Both services took place at the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady, Carlyle, Sask. The Celebrant was Rev. Joseph Comas Epifano. Interment followed at the Arcola Cemetery, Arcola, Sask. after which everyone was invited for a time of fellowship and refreshments at the home of Loretta Heidinger in Arcola.

Atom Cougars host annual tournament Danielle Benjamin Sports Contributor Our Atom Cougars have had a busy few weeks with lots of games and also hosted our home tournament.

We hosted Oxbow on Jan. 19 and played a real nail biter, we ended up winning 9-8.

Our next game was on Jan. 26 when we played against Lampman in our home tournament - we won 12-7!

Game 2 was against Balgonie and we beat them with a score of 7-6. These two wins put us into the A final which was held on Sunday at 11:30 - we were up against Carievale, who happens to be first in the league.

Our team tried hard but we fell to them 16-1.

We had a great tournament with 6 teams in total, Carlyle, Estevan, Lampman, Whitebear, Carievale, and Balgonie.

Thanks to all the tournament organizers, tournament sponsors, referees, Brent for all his time on the ice and Zamboni, Mary and the kitchen crews, and for all who came to support our team by watching the games, buying tickets on the raffle table, 50-50 tickets, etc. We appreciate you all.

Next Cougar action is in Oxbow on Feb. 3 at 2 pm.
