Arcola historian’s first book studies Indigenous people of southern Saskatchewan

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury Adrian Paton has always taken a keen interest in history and in photographs of people.

The history of Indigenous people is of particular interest to him.

He has built up an impressive collection of pictures during his life.

Now, at age 85, the Arcola resident has compiled and released An Honest, Genial and Kindly People - A Private Collection of First Nations Photographs from the Turn of the Century in Southern Saskatchewan.

Released late last year, the book also features history and stories that Paton has gathered over the years.

The response has proven to be tremendous so far.

“We really didn’t have a network set up to distribute the books,” Paton said in an interview with Lifestyles.

“We thought that would happen in time. But we’re finding out we had to distribute them fairly quickly.”

There are about 200 photos, all of which are from his collection, in the book. They make up about half of the book’s content. Stories represent the other half.

Paton also shares how he obtained the photos

and the subject material.

The majority of the photos are of Indigenous people from southern Saskatchewan, but he has photos in his collection from throughout the Great Plains of North America that people have sent to him.

Paton believes he spent about three years working on the book.

“I would have to research, and in my collecting, I was remiss and did not put down everywhere that we had these pictures,” said Paton.

“We found out that we should have somewhere we could refer to where we found it, or how these came into my possession.”

The owner of the South Saskatchewan Photo Museum, Paton has been collecting photos for about 50 years.

The Saskatchewan History and Folklore Society took an interest in it, and one of the society’s members instructs Indigenous studies at the University of Saskatchewan.

“He suggested that I should put them in book form,” said Paton.

Paton says he has always liked old pictures. Born in the Great Depression, he grew up during challenging times, and he became interested in it quite a number of years ago.

Photos of Indigenous people from the era chronicled in his book are quite rare. But he pointed out that Arcola had a photographer in the town prior to 1900.

“He took pictures of everything, including Indigenous people, and that’s what I started from, one of his pictures, which was the most beautiful picture, and I really liked it, and so I started collecting as many as I could find.”

That photo is of a couple, and it appears in the book.

Then there’s the photo that is on the front cover of An Honest, Genial and Kindly People, an Indigenous man named Washegenesh, who was a chief in this area.

He noted that the names of the Indigenous people were often misspelled by non-Indigenous people, who would spell a name the way they thought it should be done, rather than the right way. It means there are several different spellings of Washegenesh’s name.

“I’ve had quite a few discussions with First Nations people with regard to these names, and they agreed I’m as close as anyone would come,” he said.

For someone with such a keen interest in

photos, it might be surprising to some that Paton isn’t a photographer. All of the photos in the book were taken by other people, including a couple in which he had someone take pictures of objects for the book.

Paton is well-known in Arcola for his love of history. A number of years ago, the community released a history book of the area, much like other Saskatchewan cities, towns and villages. Paton was the chairperson of that committee, so he learned a little bit about releasing a book.

His love of history started with people who homesteaded in the region, like his grandfather and his father, who was five years old when he immigrated to Canada from Scotland.

“I was quite interested in that, and First Nations people just fit into that era,” said Paton.

Many libraries and schools across the Prairie provinces are adding An Honest, Genial and Kindly People to their Indigenous resources and Prairie history sections. The feedback has been particularly favourable from Indigenous

tion.

Huawei role in rural Sask. shows complex relationship

By Murray Mandryk As a province dependent on trade, we learned long ago how that we are affected by what goes on elsewhere in the world.

When our cattle industry was finally showing signs of strength, a cow with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) shows up and we suddenly lose our foreign beef markets.

The U.S. elects a protectionist president and we suddenly have trouble selling our pipeline steel into American markets.

And we are all too familiar with tariffs on our wheat or potash or the problem with getting our crude oil to tidewater because of a lack of pipelines.

But sometimes it goes beyond international commodity trade. In a world where technology crosses borders faster than any commodity ever could, we are increasingly see foreign communication giants integrated into every aspect of our lives.

In fact, we often don’t know how integrated until there is a controversy, which very seems the case with SaskTel’s decade-long relationship with China’s Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. The U.S Department of Justice last week levied charges against Huawei chief financial office Meng Wanzhou, who had been detained in Vancouver for extradition.

Meng, her company and U.S. and Hong Kong subsidiaries have been charged by the Americans on 13 counts that included conspiracy, bank fraud, obstruction of justice and money laundering.

This all came three days after Canadian Ambassador to China, former federal Liberal cabinet minister John McCallum, was fired for suggesting Meng might have a good case against her extradition to the U.S. Allegations, so far, suggests otherwise.

The whole affair become a significant international incident with the Chinese accusing the Canadians of racism and detaining Canadian businessmen in what many see as a retaliatory measures.

However, it isn’t the first time concerns have been raised about Huawei’s business practices.

Richard Fadden, former national security adviser to the prime minister, suggested in recent Globe and Mail article that “the evidence for banning Huawei from 5G continues to pile up.”

The article noted previous changes again Huawei in Poland while New Zealand, Australia and Britain were all experiencing reluctance at Huawei’s participation in either next-generation mobile data or core operations.

In Saskatchewan, SaskTel and Huawei have had significant business relations since 2010 when thenSaskTel president Ron Styles and then-premier Brad Wall travelled to China to sign an initial $28-million deal.

That deal has led to seven-year deal for the testing of next-generation wireless broadband technology in rural Saskatchewan.

In fact, the Chinese company has done approximately $200 million with SaskTel and the province since 2010, including a signed 2016 deal with the University of Regina to use the telecom’s technology.

SaskTel chief technology officer Darryl Godfrey has describe the relationship as a positive one and argues that ending the business relation would create a “significant competitive disadvantage” in rolling out SaskTel’s 5G networks.

This hasn’t placated the concerns of many, including NDP Opposition leader Ryan Meili.

Meili last month wrote to Premier Scott Moe demanding a review of Huawei dealings with SaskTel. “We (don’t) have enough scrutiny being paid towhat’s happening right here in Saskatchewan,” Meili said. “It’s important that we ask for a higher level of scrutiny on that relationship.”

Although political opposition is making hay off the Hauwei concerns, it won’t be all that easy for SaskTel to simply cut ties.

As small teleco in the highly competition world of telecommunication, SaskTel’s decade-long relationship with Huawei emerged out of a need to find a competitive advantage. It helped provide services in an area like rural Saskatchewan where others wouldn’t be eager to provider services.

What SaskTel is now left with is a complex mess.

Sometimes, this is simply the reality. We may seem isolated here in Saskatchewan, but it’s difficult to escape messy international trade and business relations.

What we weren’t meant to see In the latest go at bringing a Broadway musical to live TV, the producers of Fox’s “Rent” found themselves in a challenging situation when a lead actor was injured during rehearsal. Unable to move and dance the way the character needed to because of a cast on his foot, the decision was made to air a large portion of the dress rehearsal that had been taped the day before.

Shelley Luedtke Imagine having to use dress rehearsal footage as the real thing. Though each rehearsal is certainly taken seriously it still isn’t the same as being in front of a live audience. How many of the cast members held back a bit on their solos to protect their voices before the live event? How many may have altered a dance move to save a sore back or knee to ensure they could do every move fully the following day?

When they signed on for the project none of the cast could have predicted that the majority of what the audience would see would be a rehearsal.

In reading the reviews it seems some of the performers fared better than others, but the best article I saw asked the question: How do you review something the audience was never meant to see?

A rehearsal is preparation. It is practice for an event. It is understood to be a place where mistakes can happen and slip-ups occur. Actors and musicians are in rehearsals often. But we also rehearse for weddings, graduations and other special celebrations. A fourth year student where I went to university had to rehearse how to serve a meal to royalty when the Prince and Princess of Norway visited our campus.

I have rehearsed for theatre productions, concerts, worship services and, in what turned out to be a really good decision on the part of our teacher, my grade 3 class had to rehearse dealing with custom-

ers when we hosted a bake sale at our elementary school.

I have also been in many rehearsals that I wouldn’t have wanted an audience to see. It is the private space where you troubleshoot and come up with ideas to make things work. So to have to present a dress rehearsal to the audience as a finished product would be rather tough to swallow. So again, how do you rate something you were never supposed to see?

Yet how often do we hear people use similar sentiments? If we are crying or angry or ill we might have said to someone, “I don’t want you to see me this way.” If something has turned in a direction we didn’t expect we might implore, “I can’t have you see me like this.”

A friend of mine was asked to be a model for a fashion show in the city where we attended university. Her hair, make-up and nails were stunning and her wardrobe received a serious upgrade. But as soon as the show was over she couldn’t wait to wash off the makeup and get back into jeans and a t-shirt.

She smiled and, “I feel like me again.” A few weeks later the same friends who were cheering her on at the fashion show tried to be a comforting presence following a family crisis. We saw her at her stageready best…and…at her most vulnerable. The key was that she let us share in both.

When we might wish to duck and cover; to retreat to the safety of privacy; well, that is exactly the moment we need to let people in and see us as we are. People who want us to just be “me again.”

So how do we assess something others were never meant to see when things turn in unexpected or unimaginable directions? Far more important than the show going in is summoning the courage when life continues to move forward and we need help taking the next step. Perhaps the truth is that what we don’t think people should see in us…is exactly what we should let them see. That’s my outlook.

911 and an argument was overheard and the individual hung up. We had a description of the vehicle and it was identical to the vehicle from the morning. Patrols were again made and Members stopped at a business to ask if they had seen our suspect vehicle. A patron returned shortly afterward to advise us the vehicle had just passed them. Members quickly located the vehicle and pulled it over. Upon being approached by the Police Officer the driver started to utilize some profanity (understatement) and they were acting very agitated. This caused the Police concern being they now believed the other occupant was being held against their will. The driver was arrested and quickly found themselves in handcuffs in the back of a patrol vehicle. The investigation determined there had been arguments, however, there was no evidence of a Domestic Assault.

been no handcuffs and the time in the back of the patrol vehicle would have been much more comfortable and likely shorter. They were also advised if they had just agreed to meet with the Police after the 911 call the situation would have been resolved in a more comfortable manner.

The presence of the Police had a calming effect on the situation and they were permitted to carry on with their travels.

We would like to thank those that helped us locate this vehicle and resolve the matter.

Did you know the Police are mandated to follow up with all 911 calls? This usually requires a face-to-face meeting to ensure everyone is okay.

Carnduff brought us a guest to stay in the Crow Bar Hotel. He is facing many charges including impaired driving and assaulting a Police Officer. What is unfortunately not shocking to us is they do not know how they ended up in Carlyle or what happened.

Drugs are so scary.

If you are concerned about a loved one and you live too far away and don’t know anyone else to call please call the Police and we will check on your loved ones well-being. If you have not talked to them for about 8 hours and it is now close to midnight, well let us just say you should call us earlier. It is not good for one’s health to have the Police show up after midnight. It can really scare someone, which is not good for ones well being or their health.

Knock, knock, who’s there? Nobody, which has resulted in one individual being charged for breaching their release conditions. If you have a curfew condition we do occasionally go knocking and we will be doing more of that in the future.

breaching their conditions by driving near the other individual’s residence. We confirmed the alleged offender was tucked into bed and the vehicle was determined to be operated by some oilfield workers out for a drive. Now, if you are driving around and you are bored, please don’t drive into someone else’s driveway. If you do, please don’t do it more than once.

We are investigating another fraud, this time through the computer.

One individual is out a substantial amount of money. Our investigation is continuing.

Someone reported a fraudulent withdrawal from their account.

It appears that an old cheque book may have been thrown out and is now being utilized by someone who does not have lawful authority to use the cheque book.

There is an App for that. Ok, as much as I told the individuals we dealt with that they would not read about themselves in the paper, well I kind of have to. You see we were being provided directions to another residence, it was just a subpoena for court that we had to serve. The directions are those one often gets, down the highway take the first road south when you come to the corner on the highway, then continue until you cross the bridge, go up the hill, turn right, then your first left and it is the first house on the left. You get the idea. We have all heard directions like this before. Well I guess I am old school and I wrote down the directions. My partner, new generation Police Officer obtained the land location and stated he will use the APP. So down the highway we go and we go past the grid road at the corner where I thought we should turn and . . . the APP failed. It was telling us how to get there but we could not

go there. Although we had a four wheel drive truck I know it is non productive to cross fields and fence lines. Thus back to the directions in my notebook and my partner kept saying, “Yup, the APP says you can get there that way” Although there is always an APP, sometimes the spoken and written word is all we need.

So an individual gets pulled over for an offence and asks me, “Do you know who I am?”

My answer, “Of course I do, I have your drivers licence.”

The individual’s answer “Do you know what I do?

My answer “Yes, you break the law, thus the reason the reason I have your drivers licence.”

The individual’s response “I will make sure you regret this.”

My answer “I already do, however, it is my job and I often regret having to do it.”

The individual’s response “I will be calling your supervisor.”

My answer, “Great, he will then know I am out doing my job.”

We are investigating several different allegations of Uttering Threats. A promise is a promise but if it threatening you may find yourself charged.

If you do not have proper tires, if you can’t get traction because you are driving a two wheel drive pick up with no weight in box, or your car does not get good traction in inclement weather, you still have to stop at a stop sign. No ands, ifs or buts.

Members arrested on individual for impaired driving where samples of 150/160 mg% were obtained and the vehicle was seized for 30 days, while another driver received a 72 hour suspension and a threeday vehicle seizure.

Tickets were issued for Stop sign - $230, fail to wear seatbelt - $175, stunting - $150, drive without a valid licence $150 and speeding with most expensive being $200 Warnings were issued for stop sign, speeding, insecure load, fail to wear a helmet on an ATV, obstructed licence plate, inadequate windshield, fail to signal, inadequate signal light and inadequate licence plate light.

Inspection notices were issued for inadequate licence plate lights, inadequate mudflaps or fenders, window tint, inadequate windshield, and inadequate tail light.

With a Twitter handle of @ECraigLothian, the managing partner with Lex Capital Management has gotten into more than a few Twitter wars over the years.

Asked about the recent rallies and convoys in oilpatch communities, he said, “I think it’s great. We’re finally waking up. We, as an industry, and CAPP (Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers), as our biggest representative of the industry, we’ve done a horrible job representing ourselves. We’ve given up the narrative to the ecoterrorists and the climate alarmists and we try to ignore it. I think, as an industry, we thought if they’re saying we’re dirty, and if I say anything, they’re going to target me, so we’ve been afraid to speak up.

explain how important it is that the energy sector be well capitalized, and that the industry cannot grow without that capital. He said, “The biggest impediment to that capital is government policy. It’s policy and the narrative around that, how they’re delivering it.

We wanted to be able to tell him that, in the hope he’d be able to exert some influence over the government as a cabinet minister.”

Lothian wasn’t successful at getting a meeting, but he has spoken to Goodale at a social event. Then, Lothian recalled, he warned Goodale of ignoring populist movements like the Yellow Vests in France, whom Lothian said of the French, “aren’t exactly warmongers.”

“You need to be a little bit wary of ignor-

ing the populist movement that could develop around this. It’s going to start with the industry, with convoys, with people speaking out against what they’ve done to the Canadian energy industry; the people out of work unemployed and under employed.

“It’s going to grow from there when people start to realize that the oil industry is more than 10 per cent of the GDP of the country. And if you start removing that, from the Canadian economy, it’s going to have an impact on everyone.

It’s going to hurt people everywhere.”

“It could be a very significant movement going forward, and I hope it steamrolls towards the 2019 federal election,” Lothian said.

Premier Scott Moe and Senator Denise Batters to join Federal Opposition Leader Andrew Scheer at Moosomin Resource Rally

By Kevin Weedmark World-Spectator Federal Opposition Leader Andrew Scheer, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, and Saskatchewan Senator Denise Batters will visit Moosomin on the February long weekend to speak at a pro-pipeline, pro-resource rally.

The rally will take place Saturday, February 16 at the new IJack assembly plant just north of Moosomin on Highway 8.

The rally will start at 11 am sharp, and will be followed by a barbecue.

Brandon-Souris MP Larry Maguire, Dauphin-Swan River MP Robert Sopuck and Saskatchewan MLAs Steven Bonk, Warren Steinley, and Warren Kaeding have all confirmed that they will attend the event as well.

The plan for the rally grew out of efforts by the town and RM of Moosomin to bring discussion of Energy East back to the national agenda.

The town and RM submitted parallel resolutions to SUMA and SARM last winter to ask

those organizations to raise the issue with higher levels of government.

The town and RM then appointed former SARM president Sinc Harrison to take the lead on the issue.

“The voice of the silent majority needs to be heard,” says Harrison.

“Polls that have been done across Canada show there is support for pipelines. To sit back and do nothing is unacceptable, so we will do what we can.

“We were very fortunate to have the Leader of the Opposition, and then Senator Batters, and then the Premier of Saskatchewan agree to come speak at the rally.

Hopefully that will help attract the national media, because we want to get our message out to the whole country.

“It took a lot of work by a few people to secure Andrew Scheer as a speaker, but because of his national profile, our event should get a lot of attention, and we want that attention because we have a message that we want to get out to the country—that for places like Moosomin, where

people are familiar with pipelines, where people know what pipelines are all about, there’s a lot of support for pipelines.”

Did he think the group would be able to attract such high-profile speakers?

“I’m an eternal optimist,” he says. “When we started on this, we were very hopeful that we could bring in some speakers of a very high calibre. To have Andrew Scheer here and Premier Moe and Senator Batters is what we hoped for.

We’re still hopeful the premiers of Manitoba and New Brunswick will be able to come as well.

When I found out Premier Moe was coming, I reached out to him and asked if he could speak with those two premiers, and he said he would.”

Invitations had been sent to the premiers of Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and New Brunswick to attend, but the Ontario and Alberta premiers have declined.

Harrison said planning for the rally has gone well so far. “The committee that’s been working on this has been wonderful to work with,” he said. “We have had lots of enthusiasm, we’ve had lots of people offer to help in the community and we’ve had financial contributions from outside the area.

It’s amazing how well this has come together.

He said he expects a large crowd for the rally, but how large is anyone’s guess.

“It could be 500 or it could be 5,000,” he said.

“If it’s 5,000, we’ll have to set up some speakers outside!”

What does he see as the ideal result of efforts to bring attention to the crisis in getting resources to market? “The first thing would be that the Senate would reject Bill C-69. The second would be that TransCanada would reconsider their application to the National Energy Board, and Energy East would get under way, and the Trans-Mountain Pipeline would get under way.”

The three speakers should have a lot to say about the oil and gas industry and pipelines.

In a 2018 interview with the World-Spectator, Andrew Scheer said he supports pipelines.

“There is still a market in eastern Canada for western energy,” he said.

“I don’t believe that motorists in Quebec or Ontario or Atlantic Canada are happy that they are importing oil from other

countries . . .

“I believe that by removing those conditions and by repealing C69 we could show the investors and companies that you have a government that is going to be a champion of the sector, and hopefully they would come back to the table, so I do think that is possible. Energy East was one of those grand nation building projects that would have brought our country closer together.

“It had support in Atlantic Canada, support in Quebec and Ontario outside of the political realm. Many people in the economy outside of government knew that would be great for the economy, and I think that we could create the conditions for a win on that in a Conservative government and not with the Trudeau Liberal government.”

Crossword puzzles. Life.

Let’s start with Leviticus. As part of my regular reading program, I’m going through that book of the Old Testament once again. For those who are familiar with it, I probably don’t have to say anything else; for those readers who aren’t, all I can say is that plowing through the litany of Old Testament expectations can be ponderous, to say the least. I have to admit that on too many occasions I’ve skimmed over the text but to my credit, however, I see that I’ve also underlined some passages, indicating that

I’ve garnered some nuggets of truth. This time, however, I determined to go deeper, to discover God’s purpose in all those rules and regulations and to my delight, I’ve discovered more about God’s grace than the imposition of laws.

Then, there are crossword puzzles. I read God’s Word each day, I enjoy my daily walks, I am faithful to perform my regular household duties but when I am free to sit and relax, out comes the puzzle book. (Kudos to our local bookstore for keeping a great selection of them on the shelves.)

levels of difficulty; what they all have in common, however, is a focus on word selection. While some answers are simple, occasionally I have to admit defeat and look up the solution.

Last, but actually first, there is life, filled with conundrums that no one escapes: Why the pain? Where’s the answer? How come this is happening to me/us?

When will it end? What good can possibly come out of it all?

How wonderful to know, when answers aren’t there, His grace remains.

Gordon F. Kells High School Curling Champs Congratulations to the District Junior Curling Champs, Tyrell Dixon, Mitchell Himmelspach, Jacob Kirk, Carter Morrison, and Logan Romaniuk, along with their coach Brian Romaniuk. Last weekend they became the champs of the southeast! Way to go guys!

The new semester is underway. Basketball, Fitness Club, curling, drama, SLT, and wrestling are all busy this month and badminton will be starting up soon.

The GFK Junior Boys Curling team won the District Championship in Maryfield on Feb 2. They competed in a bonspiel of eight other teams including two Weyburn and Moosomin teams, Lampman, Ogema and Stoughton. The junior team consists of Logan Romaniuk (skip), Mitch Himmelspach (third), Tyrell Dixon (second), Carter Morrison (lead), with Jacob Kirk & Everett Brown as alternates. Brian Romaniuk coaches the team. All six of the boys played over the weekend and did a great job. They were undefeated after Friday’s round robin. They lost one game to Weyburn on Saturday, but came back to beat them in the final and take home the District Championship title. Congratulations boys and great work!

Big Game Management licences available for elk in the Moose Mountain area The Ministry of Environment is issuing 100 Big Game Management Licences for elk in Wildlife Management Zone (WMZ) 33 that will be valid from February 4-25. This decision is in response to significant concerns about agricultural damage and will help reduce the elk population in the region.

Big Game Management Licences are issued by the ministry to address concerns about overabundant biggame populations.

The licences will be issued on a first come, first served basis

through the Saskatchewan Hunting, Angling and Trapping Licence system at 9 a.m. on Monday, February 4.

These licences are only valid for antlerless elk within the following area of WMZ 33: • Provincial Highway No. 9 between Grid Road No. 711 and Provincial Highway No. 13 (east boundary); • Grid Road No. 711 between Provincial Highway No. 9 and the west boundaries of the Rural Municipalities (RMs) of Brock No. 64 and Hazelwood No. 94 (north boundary); • West boundaries

of the RMs of Brock No. 64 and Hazelwood No. 94 between Grid Road No. 711 and Provincial Highway No. 13 (west boundary); and • Provincial Highway No. 13 between the west boundaries of the RMs of Brock No. 64 and Hazelwood No. 94 and Provincial Highway No. 9 (south boundary).

The primary tool to manage elk populations is hunting. Ensuring that licensed hunters have a reasonable opportunity to harvest elk is important in helping reduce populations in the region and attaining long-term elk management goals.

The first period was one the boys wish they could have re-started.

Wawota dominated the period with Taylor Ernst scoring just five and half minutes in. They took advantage of a Cougar penalty when Dylan Lamontagne scored. It was a 2-0 lead at the halfway mark. Ben Johnstone got the boys on the board, taking advantage of a Cougar power play with help from Marc Shaw and Kelly Currie.

Wawota scored 2 more times with goals from Jordan Fox and Devin Stewart to end the first at 4-1.

Wawota struck first again in the second period, scoring at just a minute into the period.

Marc Shaw closed the gap, scoring 2 minutes later, with help from Ben Johnstone and Ty Currie. The Flyers, Tyler Matthewson, then made it a 6-2 game. The Cougars weren’t going to end the period without hammering another one in and that is just what Cooper Fox did

The PureChem Cougars hosted the Wawota Flyers on Feb. 1 and skated to an 8-6 victory, earning themselves home ice advantage in the first round of Big Six playoffs. with help from Mitchel Morrison and Braden Liboiron. The second ended in a score of 6-3.

The Cougars need a huge 3rd period if they want to stay in 4th. A tie would keep them there and a win would give them home ice in the play-offs. A huge third is just what they did! They shut down the Flyers and scored 5 goals. Brett Turgeon, Kelly Currie,

Ben Johnstone, Brent McLean and Brandon Lequyer made it a 8-6 final with helpers from Mitchell Morrison, Kelly Currie, Brett Turgeon, Brent McLean and Billy Greenwood. Brett’s goal off the hop was a great start to the period, followed by Currie’s backhand and Johnstone’s sniper.

The crowd was hopping as there was life

again for the Cougars.

McLean and Lequyer kept them on their feet celebrating, scoring the last two, to finish the game.

Alida News Submitted by Edel Cowan

The Alida community extends condolences to the Shaw/ Irwin and Young families on the passing of Faye (Irwin) Shaw (formally of Gainsborough) who passed away Jan. 29 at the age of 69 at the Redvers Special Care Home. Faye’s parents (Clarence and Ethel (Young) Irwin) farmed south of Alida in the Oakley district in the late 1940s. A celebration of her life was held February 4 in Gainsborough with interment at a later date at the Winlaw Cemetery.

The Alida community also extends condolences to the family of Rose (Scott) Hansen (formally of Glen Ewen) who passed away Jan. 30 at the age of 93 at the Sunset Haven Nursing Home, Carnduff.

She was predeceased by her husband Arne in 2010. He had done much road construction work in our area, and Rose enjoyed her horses and had participated at few times in our Ride-a-Long. Her funeral service will be held in the spring of 2019.

Did you know that it is supposed to be

an early spring this year? Because Willy, the groundhog did NOT see his shadow on Feb. 2. Gee I hope they’re correct, as I for one would sure like to see an early spring. It will soon be Valentine’ Day, make sure you remember your Sweety – maybe take her/him out to a Valentine’s meal at your nearest restaurant.

Visiting with Bob and Cecille Harrison over the weekend (Feb. 1-4) were daughter Betty-Jo and her husband Aaron DeJong (Lashburn).

They also participated in the Oilmen’s bonspiel.

Murray Cowan (Estevan) and Adam Cowan (Moose jaw) spent Feb. 2 at the Cowan farm snowmobiling around the area. They also visited with Gray, Edel, Tim, Shelly and Ainsley and enjoyed supper at the rink before returning back to Estevan.

Leonard and Lil Patton attended the Pee Wee Provincial Hockey game in Oxbow on Feb. 2 to watch their grandson Keagan who participates with the Oxbow Pee Wee Huskies.

They won this first

round of Provincials against Avonlea with a two-game total points of 17-10. Their second round will be against Carievale.

Madison Beriault and Thomas Harrison also participate with this team.

Way to go guys and Good luck in the next round.

It was another great weekend (Feb. 1-2) at the Alida Rink, with the Annual Oilmen’s Bonspiel. This year there was six teams that registered, all from the Alida area – Gold Star, ATeam, Vertex, Boutin Oilfield, Lemieux Oilfield and Alida Farm & Auto. The weekend began on Friday evening with one draw taking place at 7 o’clock. Following this a social evening was held ending in the wee early hours. Feb. 2 opened with breakfast that was served to 32 and the curling games were soon underway for the day. The results of the Bonspiel were as follows: A-Event had Lemieux Oilfield (Jaye Lemieux), team defeating the Vertex team (Justin Boettcher). B-Event final had the A-Team (Parry Peet) taking on the Gold Star Team

(Lloyd East) which resulted in Gold Star coming out on top.

Following the curling a delicious Roast Beef supper was served to 68 guests, including the curlers. Bringing the evening to a close the “Paper bag” draws were made and the winners announced – Congratulations to all winners. The Alida Curling Club appreciates everyone’s contributions and support towards their bonspiel and hope to see everyone will be back again at their next curling event coming up soon.

Also being held on Saturday afternoon was a hockey game featuring the Alida Youth Rec Team and the Alexander Youth team. Both teams had a great time playing their game of hockey which ended with Alida being the winner – Way to go guys.

The Alida Youth team will host their next

games next weekend Feb. 9 when they take on another couple of Manitoba teams from Virden and Oak Lake.

The “Breakfast at the Rink” this past Sunday (February 3) had Kitchen group #1 serving up 44 breakfasts – good job done guys and gals. The Breakfast Challenge total remains at 54.

There were some new faces this morning, always good to see that you are back again for breakfast. Next week it is Kitchen group #2 at the helm – see you at the rink.

Just a reminder that we’ll likely see you at the rink on Friday – as it is Fun Friday again where one can enjoy skating, scrimmage curling, cards and of course there’s always good camaraderie among everyone there – see you at the rink.

A secret ballot will be taken to appoint new officers, since the late Freda Longman was vice chair. Whoever gets the most votes, if willing, will become head of the Tenants Association’ with the runner-up as Vice Chair. Angela Penner installed the new officers at the Annual Meeting on Feb 6.

Blaise, Wawota, made their Sunday visit, and Charlotte Kovach brought us a movie Friday night, and popcorn.

Circle of Friends remembered “ The Coldest you ever were.” Someone mentioned tenting at Banff, without sleeping bags. Thank goodness we adopted the, (and parkas) from the Eskimos! Margaret told of being bundled up to go on a stoneboat to see the grandparents. The truck heater had frozen up. Ralph Mills went to Brandon in his Austin and his feet were so frozen he couldn’t feel the heater. Ruth Holstrom’s Dad drove the school bus, which had a heater in it.

Leora walked to school often against the wind. They were told to alternate running and walking, as it kept you

warmer. Ruth Dennis ealked 1.5 miles, Grace 2 miles; so bundled up in scarves and woollen mitts that she feel the cold, even at 40 below.

Fred drove his sisters in the cutter. His nose froze so that it was white. He helped during chores until the well went dry, and then they had to haul water. Even the sparrows froze and fell from the sky. Janet, at a country school north of the Qu’Appelle Valley, boarded in a farm house with no insulation. The wife started the fire in a little upright round Quebec heat, with water to wash. Her bed had a cosy feather tick, but there was frost on the rafters.

Grandson Logan Weatherald had the lead part of Bert, the chimney sweep and had several solos.

Late in December, Barbara Dennis travelled to Paris, France where she met with her daughter, Neila.

From there they spent Christmas in Germany with the Ovali family. They also spent time in Austria and celebrated New Years in Dublin, Ireland.

Neila’s many world travels were helpful in planning this trip.

Trotz working magic for Islanders

Take Connor McDavid off the roster of the Edmonton Oilers and things could get uglier in Edmonton. Remove Nikita Kucherov from Tampa Bay and the Lightning might fall back into the pack in the National Hockey League. Make Sidney Crosby an ex-Penguin and Pittsburgh might not even make the playoffs.

So it’s somewhat astonishing that the New York Islanders, a team that didn’t even make the playoffs last year, are in first place in the Metropolitan Division after losing their (by far) best player, John Tavares, to free agency last summer.

On Groundhog Day they stood second overall in

the Eastern Conference after finishing 11th last season.

So let’s cut to the chase: Islanders’ bench boss Barry Trotz is this year’s Coach of the Year.

He also may be a miracle worker.

Trotz, a Dauphin, Man., native, is the rare coach who wins a Stanley Cup, as he did with Washington last season, and is not signed to a new contract. Trotz was making only $1.5 million with the Capitals and management there showed little interest in making him wealthier, Cup or no Cup. So he quit. Within four days he had signed with the Islanders for a reported $4 million per season.

So far, it appears to be money well spent. The Islanders’ performance this year stands as testimony to his skills as a coach.

Instead of the Islanders looking to Tavares to carry the team, Trotz has a committee of lesser stars banding together to handle

the offence. Last season’s rookie of the year Mathew Barzal had 45 points at the all-star break to lead the team, while Anders Lee, Josh Bailey, Brock Nelson and Jordan Eberle follow. Lee leads the team with eight power play goals and Eberle, the former Oiler, has five.

Thomas Griess and Robin Lehner, not exactly Marty Brodeur and Patrick Roy, have been stellar, splitting the goaltending chores and stopping shots at an average .925 clip.

“Every night we have a feeling that there’s not much to worry about,” Lee told Elliotte Friedman’s 31 Thoughts.

“We’re poised on the bench. Calm. If you stick to the plan and play the right way, you’re in a good spot. Getting production from different guys every night is a huge part of the morale.

A lot of us believe in the guys in our room and who we have. The work we have done is validating that. It’s different.

Things are different.”

Can Trotz’s magic continue? A playoff spot for the Islanders is almost assured, and Trotz does have a proven, and recent, playoff track record. The ‘No Tavares, no chance’ thoughts at the start of this season are looking a little silly right now.

• Greg Cote of the Miami Herald: “CBS rejected a Super Bowl ad from a medical cannabis company. Sponsors of the ad threatened to sue, then lost track of what they were mad about, got the munchies and fell asleep listening to Pink Floyd.”

• Cote again, on the leadup to the Super Bowl: “The NFL held a Salute To Service on Tuesday, billed as a “military appreciation” event. Prohibited items included umbrellas, coolers and Colin Kaepernick.”

• Norman Chad of the Washington Post, on his distaste for the New England football club: “The Patriots and their fans are so loathsome,

I wish we could Brexit New England.”

• Chad again, on the Patriots’ QB: “(Tom) Brady is so unbeatable, when he had acne as a teenager, he sued Clearasil — and won.”

• Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle, about the Super Bowl ads: “Everyone watching the beer commercials will muse, ‘How come this stuff doesn’t make me young and beautiful and hip? I must not be drinking enough of it.’”

• Ostler again, reminiscing about the 1988 super Bowl halftime show: “The 1988 halftime show featured the Rockettes and Chubby Checker, a man with three career hits: ‘The Twist,’ ‘Let’s Twist Again,’ and ‘Let’s Twist One Last Time, I Swear, for My Retirement Fund.’”

• Comedy writer Brad Dickson: “Nebraska football has landed a four-star cornerback out of Hawaii. I’m going to guess he doesn’t watch the Weather Channel.”

• RJ Currie of sportsdeke.com: “The NY Post reports Alec Baldwin and Ben Stiller were the centre of attention at MSG during a recent NBA game. What do they expect people to do, watch the Knicks?”

• Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “There’s rumblings out of L.A. that the Lakers are itching to swing a three-city trade to land Pelicans big man Anthony Davis. In return, the Lakers would send Lonzo Ball to New Orleans, and LaVar Ball to Flin Flon.”

Another one from RJ Currie, after the NBA fined Pelicans star Anthony Davis $50,000 because his agent made his trade request public: “Tsk. There’s seven minutes salary he’ll never get back.”

Understanding economics of world trade

By Calvin Daniels Trying to fully understand the intricacies of the economics of world trade is not surprisingly like figuring out how to unravel the Gordian Knot.

So much of trade is influenced by other economic sectors which when looked at in isolation are good for a particular area of trade, but when you zoom out to look at the overall impact, it might not be as positive across a broader range of trade.

Of course there are university degree courses dedicated to understanding world economics, but for the layman, of which I am most admittedly one, the connections within the economy are fascinating.

For most of us, we look at the world economy in terms of how it directly impacts us on a

personal level.

For example, at a recent luncheon, a former staff associate was talking about their decision not to head south to spend a portion of the winter months in the warmer climate of the southern United States.

The reason was simply one of personal economics. They had looked at the state of the Canadian dollar versus its American counterpart, didn’t like that the Canuck buck was, at least in the early winter, rather low against the US dollar and so they decided to turn up the thermostat at home and stay here.

The same conversation did get around to my friend fondly recalling the days of the Canadian dollar being higher than the American one, and how that made a trip south highly advantageous.

That same scenario

is generally reversed if you are an agricultural producer. While a weaker Canadian dollar creates some challenges in terms of buying some things, the lower dollar is hugely advantageous when it comes to export sales. When you operate in a country which far over produces the domestic market for most farm products exports sales are crucial and a lower dollar opens doors to sales.

While no one would want the Canadian dollar to completely tank compared to the US currency, par value is certainly less conducive to export sales.

But the dollar tends to trend higher as oil prices rise given that this country sits on a significant reserve of oil.

In fact just last week the Canadian dollar was up at market close Friday, following the price of oil.

EARLY DEADLINE FOR: Feb. 22, 2019 issue

THURSDAY, FEB. 14 At NOON This is due to FAMILY DAY on Monday, Feb. 18

Reports showed oil was up on Friday as West Texas Intermediate crude oil gained US$1.54 to close at US$55.33 per barrel.

While the changes are modest, if it were to become a trend, Alberta and Saskatchewan could benefit significant on the oil side. We don’t seem to be on any path that will get us to $100/barrel oil, but even a jump of $10 would be big for the sector.

Of course if it drags the dollar higher it could impact export sales in some other sectors, and send more Canadians south on holidays next winter, which have economic impacts that are less desirable.
