$4,000 raised for MMLC Green Space Submitted by Tami Dovell President, MMLC A member of the local Moose Mountain Lions club, Chris Byrne, a Newfoundlander, created an event for the Moose Mountain Lions Club Greenspace with the idea he wanted to celebrate Tibs Eve here in Saskatchewan.

Tibbs Eve is a tradition in Newfoundland where Dec. 23 they celebrate family and friends by going door to door, “Mummering (dressing up and caroling) through song and dance.

Chris decided as a musician he would bring song and dance to celebrate family and friends here at the lake with proceeds going to the greenspace!!

He was enthusiastically joined by the other local talents Eddie Fahlman and Mark Crawl of Kenosee Lake whom performed a few awesome sets as well as Chris.

Chris, Eddie and Mark, performed the final set and it was absolutely wonderful.

A huge thank-you to Daryl Safinuk and Eddie Fahlman of the Kenosee Inn whom generously offered their space and staff and helped find sponsors.

136 tickets were sold in two days filling the venue space.

Reagan Schobeter of Sysco Foods donated beef, Great Western donated draft beer, and each ticket came with beef on a bun and a draft.

McMillan Motor Products donated 4 Winnipeg Jets tickets which was a private raffle. The lions brought in $1000.00 won by Ivon Irwing of Wawota.

52 of the gathered crowd kissed a Kenosee perch, did a shot of screech and went home with a certificate!! 52 of the crowd left as “Kenosee Screachers!”

It was a wonderful evening had by all and a huge thank-you from the lions club to all who donated and supported this wonderful Tibbs Eve Event.

The MMLC brought in $4000.00 for this wonderful event. Thanks to these wonderful musicians for sharing their talent with us from their generous hearts.

GFK students and staff enjoy Mosaic meal

A school tradition, the students and staff of Gordon F. Kells High School in Carlyle held the annual Mosaic meal just before the school Christmas break.

Students had the opportunity to decorate cookies at the GFK Mosaic meal.

A musical chair tournament took place at the GFK High School Mosaic meal.

It was a race to see who could open gifts the fastest while wearing mittens at the GFK High Mosaic meal .

What will the agriculture world become?

By Calvin Daniels As we embark on a new year, it is always a time to contemplate what the world of agriculture may evolve to become?

One thing that does seem likely to occur moving forward is that big corporations will increasingly decide what farmers produce, and perhaps more concerning will increasingly be telling producers how to operate their farms.

The consumer has always had some level of control in regards to what producers purchase by their collective buying habits.

If consumers shy away from buying romaine lettuce for months after a food scare, farmers will get the message and reduce production.

On a larger scale supply-and-demand has always been a key factor in the cropping intentions of farmers, or on how many replacement heifers they decide to keep on the cattle side of things.

But for the most part business has had limited forays into telling producers how to operate their farms.

That is changing.

Recently, McDonald’s, the biggie in terms of fast food restaurants, released a new policy on antibiotics that will affect cattle producers in North America, Europe, Brazil and Australia.

The chain has always had the power to influence things on the farm. When they were selling the McRib, a pork-based sandwich, the demand for pork increased, and a corresponding price bump was often the result. That is the influence of a major chain using more of a particular product than they normally do.

The latest directive for the chain is not about influencing the supply/demand chain by altering its menu, but is about moving to a more defined and stringent set of regulations regarding how much beef they purchase has been raised on the farm.

The company’s new policy is supposed to be designed to encourage producers to adopt an approach to antibiotic use where critical antibiotics for human medicine are used as a last resort or never used at all. That means phasing out use of the highest priority critically important antimicrobials, as defined by the World Health Organization.

Given issues with bacterial resistance to certain drugs the policy has some obvious merits.

But back on the farm, producers are going to find they have to change their practices if they want to sell into the supply chain headed to McDonalds.

Whenever a tried and true regiment of antibiotics is changed, it leaves two questions for producers, are the alternatives as effective? And, equally important, will the use of alternative controls cost more?

The cost factor is certainly a valid concern because it is highly unlikely McDonalds, or any other company looking to impose new regulations on farm production have any interest in increasing what they pay for product to offset any added production costs.

That will be the concern of producers moving forward. Even when the regulations appear strongly based on the goal of human health, should farm producers pay the added costs, or should business and consumers pay more to ensure the safety they seek?

If The Walls Could Speak There is a tourist attraction in San Jose, California, called the Winchester Mystery House. Its origins begin in 1884 when Sarah Winchester, heiress to millions from the Winchester rifle fortune, left Connecticut after the deaths of her husband and infant child, and bought real estate in California.

Her soul was troubled by the thought of all those who had Shelley Luedtke lost their lives due to the Winchester rifle, and the grief and torment consumed her. Her tortured soul began an endless quest for peace and she felt the road to that was in continuously remodelling and constructing on her house, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Construction never stopped. As one project neared completion, another would be started so that there was no interruption to the building process. There were times when an addition was completed, only to be torn down and rebuilt. It was construction for the sake of construction. The various projects didn’t need to necessarily serve a purpose, they just needed to be built. As a result there are stairways that lead nowhere, doors that open onto walls, chimneys that don’t reach the roof, a window built into the floor, and a grand ballroom that was never used. There are twisting hallways and secret passageways connecting 160 rooms in a sprawling labyrinth that saw continuous construction for 38 years at a cost of $5.5 million dollars. The quirks, characteristics and contents of the house tell a story, the story of its owner, Sarah Winchester.

I love real estate programs. I watch with great interest to see what kinds of kitchen cabinets, bathtubs, paint colours, windows and flooring people select for their homes. I enjoy seeing the before and after pictures which usually go something like this: Before - a blank canvas of walls, tile, windows and rooms; After - a house filled with furniture, photos and decorative accents that reflect the new tenants.

When you put your house on the real estate market you are often encouraged to remove pictures,

mementos and other items of a personal nature with the idea that you want potential buyers to see themselves living in the house, not you. So you strip the walls, mantels and shelves of what makes the house uniquely you to allow someone else to envision how they could make that same space uniquely theirs.

A house, in its most basic elements, is wood, concrete, drywall, pipes, electricity, glass, fixtures, flooring, and the like. That’s a house. But a home is more -- so much more. A home is made up of the things that make the space so personal and so special. It helps tell our story.

Walk into my kitchen and you will see what you’d expect: appliances, cupboards, countertops and a large dining room table. But I see a fridge that served double duty as an art gallery, counters where hundreds of meals have been prepared for holidays, holy days, and the everyday, and a table that has been the gathering point for celebrations, evenings of board games, hours of homework and countless cups of coffee.

In the living room you will find furniture, family pictures, books and wall art, but I see the spot where we spent precious hours rocking our babies to sleep, the faces of our families as we got ready to open Christmas gifts, and the place on the couch where I was sitting the first time I heard my daughters read.

Whether we live in a mystery house or mansion, tower or trailer, our houses tell the story of our likes, dislikes and personal preferences in the materials, colours and styles we choose to surround ourselves with. But our homes tell the stories of our lives and the experiences (happy, hurtful and everything in between) that make the space the place where we belong. Take a look around the space you call home.

Maybe it’s smaller than you wish. Maybe it’s bigger than you need. Maybe you feel it’s too cluttered or too empty, too contemporary or too dated. Whether you are tripping over toys or are an empty nester, alone or surrounded by people, in a new place or somewhere you have lived for years, take a look around and see what no one else will see. Think of all the ways you have written your stories on the space.

A house is a place to live; a home is where the pages of life get written. That’s my outlook.

Unfortunately, it can be difficult to find these animals new homes. Part of the problem is that people who adopt their pets tend to prefer younger animals over older ones, mistakenly believing that adults are more at risk of contracting illnesses. They may also worry that an older animal is more prone to experiencing difficulties in adapting to a new environment. But neither of these things are givens. In fact, there are numerous advantages of adopting an adult pet. Here are four of them.

NIGHT SKIES | JANUARY AN ASTRONOMY ARTICLE BY JAMES EDGAR The Moon begins this month at the waning gibbous phase, getting the name from “humpbacked,” like a camel. Of note, the Moon occults Saturn somewhere in the world (primarily tropical and Southern Hemisphere) each lunar month after January until November. Also, a partial solar eclipse occurs on January 6, visible from eastern Asia, extreme western North America, and the north Pacific Ocean; a total lunar eclipse happens on January 20, visible from Africa, Europe, South America, North America, extreme eastern Asia, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean. On the 1st, Venus is a little over a degree south of the Moon, followed by Jupiter on the 3rd, and Mercury on the 4th. By the 10th, Neptune is 3 degrees away, on the 12th, Mars is 5 degrees north, and on the 14th, Uranus is also 5 degrees north. On the 17th, the bright star in Taurus, Aldebaran, is less than 2 degrees from the Moon.

The 20th is the night of the full Moon, and the total lunar eclipse mentioned above. Because the Moon is at perigee (closest in its orbit), large tides follow the full phase. On the 21st, the Moon slides closely by

the Beehive Cluster (M44). At month-end, Jupiter is within 3 degrees and Venus is occulted for viewers in eastern Micronesia, Polynesia (except Hawaii), Galapagos Islands, southern Central America, and northwest South America.

Mercury is an eastern morning-sky object, brightening each day until late in the month. In conjunction with the Sun on the 30th.

Venus is prominent in the morning sky, especially early in the month. Look for a fine conjunction with the waning crescent Moon, which passes 1.3 degrees to the north on New Year’s Day. Reaches maximum western elongation on the 6th, when it is 47 degrees from the Sun and near dichotomy (50% illuminated). Passes 2 degrees north of Jupiter on the 22nd, and has a close conjunction with the waning crescent Moon on the 31st.

Mars begins at its largest and brightest for 2019, and well placed in the evening sky in the constellation of Pisces. The waxing crescent Moon passes 5 degrees to its south on the 9th.

Jupiter opens the year rising about 2 hours be-

fore dawn among the stars of Ophiuchus, very low in the southern sky, where it will spend all of 2019. The thin, waning crescent Moon passes 3 degrees to the north on the 3rd and again on the 31st. Jupiter will be 2 degrees south of Venus on the morning of the 22nd.

Saturn is in solar conjunction on the 2nd, and blotted out by the Sun until late in the month.

Uranus begins the year in eastern Pisces near the Aries border, high in the evening sky for North American observers. It can be detected by the unaided eye in dark, moonless skies.

Neptune is low in the southwest evening sky among the stars of Aquarius, where it will remain throughout the year.

James Edgar has had an interest in the night sky all his life. He joined The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada in 2000, was National President for two terms, is now the Editor of the renowned Observer’s Handbook, and Production Manager of the bi-monthly RASC Journal. The IAU named asteroid 1995 XC5 “(22421) Jamesedgar” in his honour.

Visiting with Pat Clements last Sunday were her son and granddaughter, Dale and Katlynn Dartige of Regina.

Congratulations to Andrew and Danielle on the birth of their daughter on Dec. 17. She weighed 7 lbs., 12 oz. and has been named Leah Avery.

Sympathy to Pat Clements and family on the passing of her brother, William Mulhall of Winnipeg. He passed away on Dec. 14 at the age of 91 years.

Sympathy also to the Metz and Lincoln families on the passing of Jason Metz of Weyburn. He passed away on Dec. 15 at the age of 42 years. He was the youngest son of Florence (and Larry) Metz of Regina.

The death of a young family is especially difficult and at this time of year seems even more so poignant.

Vonda Dunn Visited with her dad, George Easton recently. Jason Barnachea has travelled to the Philippines to spend Christmas with his family there. He and his wife Ransel and children will be immigrating here in the New Year. We are looking forward to meeting and having them part of our community.

The death of Joan Campbell occurred on Dec. 9 at Deerview Care Home. She was 77 years old and had made Deerview her home for the past 11 years.

Born in Moose Jaw, she lived in Maryfield and Redvers. She made many friends over the years who en-

joyed her sense of humour. She leaves siblings, Leonard Campbell, Richard Matte and Brenda Avlonitis.

A family gathering and interment are planned for later.

Paul and Tenille Ford enjoyed a trip to Jamaica recently.

Home for Christmas at the Doug and Carol Howarths were Wade and Shelley, Amy and Joel Howarth, Brent and Amanda, Noah and Emily Howarth, Brian and Darci Mills, James and Karissa, Jay Mills, Scotty Mills, Dylan Mills and Kelsey Wyatt, Ron and Sandi Meilitz and Dorothy Meilitz.

The Larry Hutchisons celebrated an early Christmas on Dec. 15. Those attending were Brent and Veronica Bartley and Amanda from Yorkton, Calvin and Leona Hutchison and Michael Hutchison. Larry and Helen returned the favour and spent Dec. 25 at the farm with Calvin and Leona.

Visiting with the Gordon Van Dressars and other family members for the holidays were Trevor and Leann Van Dressar, Jacob, Benjamin and Zachary.

Our holiday company included Justin Olson from Saskatoon, Stacey Heffernan, Kate and Sarah of Regina. Later Kenton and Stacey Olson, Carter and Emmett of Regina spent a couple of days. Every Christmas is a bit different but they are all good.

Carbon tax a political fight in 2019 Environment Minister was so determined to put a cost on polution, she might start with a federal levy on the city of Montreal for the sewage it is dumping into the St. Lawrence River.

But, at the risk of adding to the already-too-excessive cynicism out there, one doubts federal Liberals are as truly determined to make polluters as they claim.

If they were, logic dictates they wouldnt quite so eager to offer Canadian families rebate so they can simply keep their gas tanks filled and, thus, keep polluting.

At the very least, it suggests that Liberals true first priority is re-election. They know that taxing voters without a rebate would put their electoral chances somewhere at the NDPs unelectable level.

Sadly, they also know full well that sacrificing a few Western seats in Alberta and Saskatchewan where the bulk of oil-producing jobs are is likely to have little impact on Liberal chances of securing a second-term that will be determined by votes down east.

That said, is is any more cynical than what we have heard from Andrew Scheers Conservatives who have yet to put forward a discernible plan to combat GHGs because ignoring an issue is always easiest?

Yet it seems Conservatives have few problems playing footsy with the climate-change deniers who choose not to accept the the fact that GHGs are a major cause of manmade warming of the planet?

But, like McKenna, Scheer and the Conservatives have wrapped their carbon tax position around the notion of fighting for the little guy _ the people who control their politcians fate when they go the polls later this year.

Not even willing to take New Years Day off, Scheer and federal candidates and Senators held a Jan. 1 press conference at Reginas Giant Tiger discount grocer and took square aim at the extra 4.65 cents a litre we will be paying on gas when the carbon tax comes into effect in April.

It has just carried on from 2018 and years previous.

The difference now is 2019 is a federal election and the carbon tax is an issue that both of the major Liberal and Conservative combatants see as a winner for them.

So batten down the hatchets, folks. We are in for a lot of politicking on the carbon tax.

The nonsense started rather early on New Years Day, with federal Liberal Envrionment Minister Catherine McKenna tweeting the following: This year, it will no longer be free to pollute anywhere in Canada, as we put a price on pollution to cut emissions. Our resolution is to stay focused on you, and every Canadian who works hard to make tomorrow better than yesterday, and this year better than the last.

It was a message filled with as many halftruths as political sanctimony.

Maryfield Villa News Submitted by Janet Mark We wish a Happy Christmas to Marguerite Perreaux. She was able to move directly from the Villa to her home community in Redvers Health Centre. So often Saskatchewan Health shifts us from one care home to another, weakening us in the process.

We all want to spend our last days close to our families.

Here in the Villa we have had a wealth of children and carols.

The children of Kola School came for the first time to sing for us. The main choir of 25 were followed by the kindergarten, singing action songs, and there were as many babies and tod-

dlers. What a lively congregation! Next the Associated Gospel Church, all ages, treated us to their “Babe in the Barn”.

Jessie and Janet went to the main concert at the church, thanks to her family.

Kornelia Ens announced to us that there would be music at 4:15pm. She and Ervine, her youngest bother played violin, with brother Willi, a University student, and sister Evelina on piano. What a talented family.

Fred Krukoff celebrated his 97th birthday on Saturday, since he was born on Christmas Day. His daughers, Lydia Frazer and Theresa told

tales of Dad, and led in singing his favorite carols. He is now the oldest resident in the Villa.

Visitors this week included: Joan and Sherry Stewart and Merle Pittei from Redvers; Sasha, Ryon, and Melissa Toms, with Grace; Homer Ranson, Gus and Louise Burke with Ralph; Morley and Lisa Longman, Thunder Bay. Sherry Wilson picked up Mildred and Ruth Holmstrom for Christmas in Wawota. Dinner guests here included Philip Mark, Dale and Janet Thiessen.

PureChem Cougars end 2018 on a high

Nicole Currie Sports Contributor The Cougars ended 2018 with three Big 6 games on the road and one entertaining match with the Carlyle 6 & Under team before heading into the Christmas break.

On Dec. 18 the Cougars were off to battle the Coalers in a match that ended with a score of 3-2 for Carlyle.

Carlyle scored all three of their goals in the first period with Bienfait scoring in the first and the third making it a tense battle right to the end.

Kelly Currie, Ben Johnstone and Mitchel Morrison got the Cougars on the board with assists from Belanger, Turgeon, Geiger, Shaw and Fox. It was off to the Christmas games on the 21st and 22nd in Kipling and Arcola to end the year.

The Kipling dome was packed with fans to celebrate the season and they’re very happy to have joined the Big 6 League this year.

It was another close

battle and the Cougars were able to hold-on, sneaking out another win with a score of 5-4.

They’ve liked to keep things interesting by scoring their goals in the first and second periods, giving the opposition chances to get back in the game. Scoring for Carlyle were: Ben Johnstone, Kelly Currie, Brett Turgeon, Clayton Geiger and Cooper Fox. Helping these guys score were: Shaw, Belanger, Turgeon, Brown, Morrison and Deck.

The Cougars ended with a 7-4 against the Combines. It was a big night for Deck as he scored a hat-trick.

The Cougars also got goals from Turgeon, Greenwood, McLean and Morrison, with assists going to Morrison, Fox, Geiger, Turgeon and Currie.

The Cougars spread out their goals this time, with 2 goals being scored in the first and second and then both teams scoring three in the third.

Dec. 19 was a fun battle between the Cougars and the Cougar 6

& under team. It was hard to tell which group had more fun. The kids thought it was pretty awesome to score on the big guys and the big guys had a blast goofing around with them.

“There were looks of awe, excitement and lots of Christmas spirit.

The sheer love of a game we all share regardless of our age gap is what makes this country so special, especially this time of year,” said Coach Clayton Geiger.

‘Greek Freak’ the biggest breakout star of 2018

It’s a bit strange to say a five-year National Basketball Association veteran had a breakout season, but it was in 2017-18 that Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks suddenly thrust himself into the top tier of NBA players.

Of course. Kevin Durant?

Yep. James Harden?

Yes. But this giant from Milwaukee, Antetokounmpo, whose surname is the bane of headline writers and late-night sportscasters, is also among the most difficult to stop.

His 26.9 points-pergame average last season, along with his 10 rebounds a game suddenly had every basketball fan going to great pains to learn the proper pronunciation.

It turned out his nickname, Greek Freak, became his go-to monitor. This 6-foot-11 native of Athens, chosen 15th overall in the 2013 draft, was suddenly all over the evening highlights packages, slamming in dunks, grabbing rebounds at both ends of the floor and

dominating games as the Bucks became relevant, and a power, in the Eastern Conference.

For the average American sports fan, Antetokounmpo was one of last year’s breakout athletes, joining a handful of others: — Shohei Ohtani: The Japanese baseball star, the first player since Babe Ruth to be both a threat on the mound and at the plate, had a stream of press clippings prior to his arrival in Anaheim.

And even though he missed a good chunk of the season due to injury he lived up to those clippings, posting a 4-2 pitching record with a 3.31 ERA, and slamming 22 homers with 61 runs-batted-in and a .285 average.

Welcome to 2019 – hope everyone has a great year.

It’s great to see Linda back in the Post Office again. She and her husband Don Akins spent a couple of weeks (Dec. 3 to 16) in Nevada enjoying a restful holiday.

Tim and Shelly Cowan spent Dec. 17 in Regina where they visited with Jeff Cowan for a while, and wished him a Happy Birthday before heading home.

On Dec. 19 Redvers School held their annual Christmas Concert.

Family members from Alida who attended this event to watch their child/children or grandchild/grandchildren preform were Gille and Cheryle Boutin, Tim and Shelly Cowan, Gray and Edel Cowan, Dean and

Katrina Ramsey, The Marsh Family, Amanda Mudliar and Damen Kahapeepatow, Brenda Lemieux and Blaine Labatt. Hopefully I didn’t miss anyone, but do know that these families have little ones attending Redvers School Awesome job done kids, really enjoyed the program.

Have a Merry Christmas and a great holiday.

On Dec. 20 Oxbow Prairie Horizon School held their annual Christmas concert in the afternoon as well as in the evening. Many family members also attended one or both performances. Some of these family members would include The Schulhausers, The Peets (Chad, Sam, Lincoln and Grandma Margaret), The Junks (Jason, April, Ayden,

Grandma Brenda), Allan and Jackie Krepakevich, Doug and Leanne Dubuc, Kaitlin Bonoski and Colin Wilcott, Clint Beriault, Mitch, Chris Beriault, Wes, Rachelle Smith as these families have children or grandchildren attending the Oxbow School. Once again I hope I didn’t miss too many names.

On Dec. 21 Alida Farm & Auto held a customer appreciation Christmas gathering at the garage with a good crowd in attendance.

Faye Walker left Dec. 22 for Saskatoon where she visited with her daughter Deidra, Jeff Nickel and granddaughters Olivia, Abby, Claire and Piper and spent the Christmas holidays with them, returning home Dec. 26.

Spending Christmas Day with Gary and Brenda Junk were Rose Junk (Oxbow), Dina and Hayden Junk (Regina), Carla Junk and Adam Swanson (Regina), Brody Swanson and his friend Ashlee (Kenosee Lake), Jason, April Junk and family Ethan, Adrianna and Ayden.

On Boxing Day granddaughters Lacie Nilsen and her friend Blaze and Kelsey Rydberg and her friend Steven stopped in at the Cowan farm to have a quick “Christmas” meal with Grandma Edel and Grandpa Gray, and exchanged Christmas gifts before they headed back to their homes in White Bear and Estevan.

There were many

families in the area that went on a holiday trip or went to spend Christmas with their other family members other than their family here in or around Alida. Do hope that everyone had a great Merry Christmas and holiday season. I do know that that fella with the red suit and big white beard was surely generous to our family.

One would think that he emptied his sleigh at our house so that Rudolph and the others would have an easier time heading North with an empty sleigh. Until next year Santa – have a good holiday. Hopefully 2019 will be a happy and prosperous year for you all.

Denis Lemieux 1968-9172 Athletic Accomplishments while at BSU: A four-year letter winner, Denis Lemieux played in 91 games for the Bemidji State men’s hockey team from 196871.

The centerman posted 129 points on 59 goals and 70 assists for an average of 1.47 points per game and remains 22nd on BSU’s all-time scoring lists. In 1970-71, he led the team in scoring (52 points) and goals scored (32) and remains tied for 10th on BSU’s single-season goal-scoring list.

Lemieux is one of just two players in Beaver Hockey history to register six goals in a single game. He accomplished the feat in an 11-1 victory over Wisconsin-Superior Feb. 13, 1071. Following the 1970-71 season, he was selected as the ICHA Most Valuable Player and was voted as a team captain in 1971-72.

Lemieux earned AllAmerica honors at the conclusion of the 1971 season and is one of BSU Hockey’s 50 Years. As a Beaver, he was a member of three ICHA championship teams (1969, 1970 and 2971).

Jeff Cowan, Regina arrived Dec. 23 at the Cowan farm where he spent a few days visiting family and friends during the Christmas season. He, Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan spent Christmas Eve at the farm with Gray and Edel. Spending Christmas Day at the Cowan farm on Dec. 25 were Joyce and Jackie George (Redvers), Jeff Cowan, Dustin Cowan (Weyburn) and his friend Mallory, Adam Cowan (Estevan) and his friend Chrissy, Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan. They all returned to their home later on that day.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan spent Christmas Day evening in Minot with her niece and sisters and families met up with daughters Lacie and Kelsey. They returned to Alida on Dec. 26.
