NVGG successful in 2019

By Laura Kish The Kingswood Golf Course hosted the annual NVGG (Not Very Good Golfers) Tournament for 62 golf participants on Friday, June 21. Golfers engaged in fun and friendly competition for a variety of prizes and various winning titles of the tournament.

The Lowest Score Winner with a score of 43 went to Bernie Blackstock and the Most Honest Golfer with a score of ‘let’s just say she had a good time’ was golfer Krista Dufour.

Golfers were served their supper indoors and just in time too as the skies opened up resulting in a downpour of rain.

A variety of prizes were given out following the supper which brought the evening to a close.

Additionally, regularly feed your herbs nitrogen-rich fertilizer to encourage strong leaf growth. To remove salt residue caused by fertilizing, �lush the plants once a month by holding their pots over the sink and running water over them until it �lows from the bottom of the pot.

To keep your herbs in great shape, harvest the leaves regularly. To do this, simply pinch off the topmost ones as you need them. Just be sure not to pick the big lowermost leaves that provide plants with a sturdy base. Regular harvesting will ensure your plants thrive.

Weyburn, Saskatchewan Community Induction into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame, August 17, 2019 Weyburn is a community that has been deeply involved in the building of baseball players, teams and facilities since 1900. The love of baseball is prominent thanks to the support of local businesses, volunteers and organizations, including the Prairie Sky Coop, the City of Weyburn, Weyburn Rebekahs, Weyburn Young Fellows, Weyburn Legion Branch # 47, Weyburn Credit Union and more. Support is a two way street, as the Beavers Western Canada Baseball League [WCBL] team is often involved in helping other local organizations including the Weyburn Humane Society, the Silver Seals Swim Team and more. Most of the players and other people involved in Weyburn baseball went on to become prominent leaders in the community.

The �irst recorded baseball game in Weyburn was 1901 when citizens of Weyburn beat the Railroad team. The second game was on July 19, 1902 when Robert C. Sutherland pitched the �irst of two games for Weyburn vs. North Weyburn. Weyburn players of note included George Beischel, Dr. R M Mitchell, Joe Mergen’s SR. and Alf Woods. Rains forced withdrawal from the diamond but it did not withdraw the future of baseball in Weyburn.

Jack and Bill Mertz came to Weyburn before 1906, bringing with them a great interest in baseball. A team started and led by OS Mitchell, brought in a battery from Toronto which helped them to capture the Soo Line League Championship.

That moment laid the foundation for many years of top caliber and exciting baseball in Weyburn.

It is believed that in 1935, when the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro League barnstormed Saskatchewan, the team stopped in Weyburn on their way north.

The Weyburn Beavers played in the Southern Saskatchewan League from 1937 to 1964. In 1948, Joe Warren [Warren Drugs], donated a large score board for Harvey Field, named after Pop Harvey, [now named Tom Laing Park], and with many volunteer hours of work, it was made into a �irst class facility. Les Wilder hit the �irst home run out of the new park! Other notable Beaver players of the 19451954 era, included Keith Covert, Ralph Hogg, Dave Huff, Jim Burge along with Gaylr Shupe and his brothers Blaine, Doug and Jack.

Baseball diamonds and parks continue to be popular places in Weyburn, and

are used by both recreational and semi-pro sports teams, all of which are supported by local associations and volunteers. Tom Laing Park is the current home of the WCBL’s Weyburn Beavers.

With local and corporate community support, baseball remains a strong force in the community of Weyburn, and is proud of its strong minor league system and its facilities, with eyes on expansion in the future.

Weyburn is an excellent example of how a community has, and continues to contribute to the rich history baseball history of Saskatchewan!

Teeing up to support community Rescue Association

It’s a ladies’ day out, time for enjoying the camaraderie of good friends and sharing laughs on a spectacular golf course while supporting a lifesaving organization. On July 19th, White Bear Lake Golf Course will once again be bombarded with fun-loving women at the annual Drive for Lives Ladies Golf Tournament. Formerly known as the Shoot for STARs Tournament, this charity tournament is once again focusing on raising funds for an essential service, with this year’s recipient being Red Coat Mutual Aid. Red Coat Mutual Aid (RCMA) works in conjunction with the Redvers and Carlyle Fire Departments, covering over 2400 kms2 throughout the 3 RMs of Antler, Brock and Moose Mountain. When every second counts, Red Coat Mutual Aid is often the �irst to arrive at accident scenes with lifesaving rescue equipment such as the jaws of life, vehicle stabilizers and de�ibrillators. They partake in �ire, water, skidoo and grain bin rescues as well as establishing safe landings for the STARs Air Ambulance.

On June 20th, Colleen Brown and Jacky Lothian, tournament organizers, were invited to an informative tour of the equipment and vehicles used in RCMA rescues. Rob Klassen who has been with the department for 19 years and is a Deputy Chief, explained that they presently have 23 members with 15 active members who undertake ongoing, specialized training. The purchasing of reliable and effective equipment is also ongoing, with their next purchase being stabilization struts for large vehicle rescues like buses and semis. As Travis Van Meer, Deputy Chief explained “While we ensure we have enough people trained in the various rescues and own the essential live-saving equipment, we hope not to use this equipment as often as we do” Rob added that each year the number and type of calls the �ire�ighters respond to varies. Throughout 2011- 2014, approximately 80% of the calls were for car accidents with most involving travelers visiting the area or passing through the region. Some years the calls are about 50% �ire and 50% vehicle/victim rescues.

In 2018, they responded to over 60 calls.

This is the tournament’s 7th year and its continued success is due to the incredible generosity of sponsors, the keen golfers, the wonderful volunteers and the excellent service provided by the personnel at the Bear Claw Casino and the White Bear Lake Golf Course.

Colleen Brown commented on what a privilege it is to organize this golf event.

“This tournament emphasizes the enjoyment of spending time with friends outside in the fresh air while supporting the community at the same time. As we are hours away from a fully equipped hospital, there is an imperative need for Red Coat Mutual Aid” Once again, the Drive for Lives committee is working hard to ensure a fantastic day for all and invites anyone interesting in sponsoring to contact them. Monetary donations, gift certi�icates and prize donations are welcomed along with wine donations for their Wine Pull event.

8 ways to save money on your summer vacation Looking to take a summer vacation, but don’t want to spend too much? Stay within your budget by following these eight tips.

1. Travel locally. If you stay close to home, you’ll save money on transportation and accommodations. You might be surprised at what your area has to offer.

2. Find free activities. Many municipalities host summer events at no charge. Alternatively, take advantage of the bike paths, waterways and parks that are always free.

3. Time your trip right. Avoid vacationing during the high season when there will be more tourists and higher prices to pay.

4. Factor in exchange rates. The foreign exchange rate can make a seemingly good deal unaffordable, or a pricey trip surprisingly inexpensive.

5. Plan ahead. In general, the earlier you book your �light and hotel, the less you’ll pay. You’ll also pay less for �lights in the middle of the week as opposed to �lying on a weekend.

6. Avoid hotels. There are many cost-effective alternatives to hotels. Look for local campgrounds, youth hostels or vacation rentals instead.

7. Cook your own meals. Choose a vacation rental with a kitchen or a hotel room with a kitchenette. One trip to the grocery store may be all you need to feed you for a week.

Maple garlic KEFTA KEBAB Looking for something a bit different for your next barbecue? Try kefta, a type of Middle Eastern street food.

Start to �inish: 20 minutes Servings: 8

Ingredients • 500 grams ground pork • 500 grams ground veal • 2 green onions, �inely chopped • 1 egg • 3 tablespoons breadcrumbs • 3 tablespoons maple syrup • 1 teaspoon garlic salt • Salt and pepper to taste • Wood skewers, soaked in water for 30 minutes

Directions 1. In a bowl, thoroughly mix all ingredients.

2. Divide the mixture into 8 portions. Shape each portion into a tube around one of the skewers.

3. Preheat the barbecue to medium heat.

4. Grill the kefta for about 2 minutes on each side, until browned.

5. Transfer to top grill to �inish cooking. Serve either wrapped in pita bread with a yogurt dressing or on top of a salad.

If you don’t have wooden skewers on hand, you can form the mixture into burger patties instead!

2. Purple Cone�lower (Echinacea purpurea) This type of Echinacea is native to eastern and central North America, making it ideal for attracting local birds and insects. Deadheading, or removing �lowers as they fade or die, is necessary if you want to make sure your cone�lower continues to bloom through fall.

3. Autumn Joy Stonecrop (Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’) This plant is unassuming during the summer, but when other �lowers are fading away, these ones are just beginning to blossom. Its spiky �lowers change colour over time, starting out white and gradually turning pink and then copper red.

When planning your fall �lowers, make certain that they’ll bloom before the �irst frost. If you’re unsure what will work in your garden, check with your local nursery.
