It’s travel season!

TurfMutt tips for pet parents who want to road trip with their furry kids Plan ahead. There are probably a few pet-friendly restaurant patios, hotels and even shops along your route, but they aren’t always easy to find. Sometimes you must call a business to find out if pets are allowed, and if so, if there are any size restrictions or fees associated with including them.

Ask for special pet treats. Some restaurants cater to pets on-the-go with treats like “pupuccinos,” plain hamburger patties and more. Just ask, you might be surprised by what’s out there! (Pro tip: be cautious with sensitive tummies and skip the treats if your dog is prone to car sickness!)

Pack some familiar dog items. Make your dog feel at home away from home by packing his favorite dog bed, blanket, chew bone, food/water bowls and toys.

Plan pet breaks. Remember, your pets need breaks from the car, too. Find a dog park along your route where your pet can play or take a walk around a public park during your pit stop to make long car rides more bearable. (Pro tip: keep the clean-up bags handy!)

Spend time in living landscapes with your pet.

Pets bene�it from time outside, just like people!

Getting your pet out of the car for a run, a walk, or a leg stretch in green space can really help keep spirits high.

Keep their meal schedule consistent. Even on the road, you’ll want to keep your pet’s feeding schedule consistent. That means packing a bag that’s easily accessible with food, water and bowls.

Pack paper towels & stain remover. Even the best-planned trips can have issues! Always travel with clean-up supplies in an easy-to-reach spot just in case.

Be respectful. Most hotels and restaurants have very specific rules about allowing pets, like not leaving them alone in the hotel room.

Sisters horseback ride across Canada

By Mary Moffat Saturday, June 1, two weary young women, their horses, dog and brother stopped on Railway Avenue East in Carlyle for a much needed break. They erected a portable pen and unsaddled their mounts and settled in for a rest. The van and the horses attracted some local attention, which is where I came into the picture.

As we watched the horses laying on the ground, one of them dreaming, they shared their story. Jewel, Katie and Joseph Keca are siblings, whose family began raising puppies for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides program. Since Jewel really didn’t want to head to university, she decided to ride horseback across Canada and raise money for the group. She and her sister Katie, began the �irst leg of their adventure in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia on May 4, 2017 and after 116 days they arrived in Sault Ste. Marie. They slept in tents, carrying packs and feed on horseback, and raised $7,000, which they used to sponsor their �irst Canine Vision dog, Kazi.

Exhausted they trailered the horses back to Grimsby, Ontario, where they rested and regrouped.

Almost two years later, in a van that Jewel modi�ied for the trip and with their brother Joseph along as their driver, support person, videographer and photographer, they set off from Kenora, Ontario to �inish their goal of being the �irst women to ride horseback across Canada.

They average between 30-50 kms per day riding. Ora, an Appaloosa mare, was part of the �irst leg of the trip and Phoenix, a Paint gelding, is new to this cross-country gig. Both horses are making the trip barefoot, but they have shoes for the times they can’t travel on the soft grass.

The ladies shared that Saskatchewan drivers have been the best so far, giving them wide berth and slowing down so they don’t spook the horses.

The goal for the siblings is to reach Vancouver in September, where they plan to �ind jobs and settle in. They are sponsored by Purina who supplies them with equine feed, and Neachai Equine Ayurveda, for equine supplements to aid in recovery, mood etc.

The saddles are supplied by Barefoot Saddles Canada and the girls rave about the comfort, which would be important if you planned to spend 116 days on one!

Since they seldom travel through towns close to the highway, the threesome was excited to discover Michael’s Coffee Shop and made their way by horseback and bike to the shop to partake in a soy latte, much to the delight of passersby.

• The surroundings. For many, the beauty of the course and its natural surroundings are essential to having a great golf holiday. Think about the particular type of weather and terrain you most appreciate and plan accordingly.

• The dif�iculty. Even if it’s the most stunning course you’ve ever played on, you probably won’t enjoy yourself if you need to take too many extra strokes. Look at the course and slope ratings to determine the level of dif�iculty.

The course rating is the score the average scratch golfer shoots on the course.

The course slope indicates a course’s dif�iculty for a bogey golfer. It ranges from 55 (very easy) to 155 (very dif�icult), with 113 representing a standard level of dif�iculty.

• The price point. A golf trip can be planned and executed on any budget. The most affordable options tend to be golf packages that include accommodations, green fees and sometimes club storage, cart rental, driving range access and deals on dining.

• The extras. Since you can’t spend the entire day gol�ing, it’s a good idea to �ind out what else the area has to offer. For instance, you might opt to stay at a resort with an outdoor swimming pool and spa. Or you might select a golf course near a town where there’s lots to do. These are especially important considerations if there are non-golfers among your travel companions.

Once you �ind the course you’re looking for, make sure to book your holiday well in advance. You aren’t the only one dreaming of a golf getaway!

How to reserve the perfect campsite Looking to snag a great campsite for the summer? Then consider pinning down the perfect place to pitch your tent by browsing online. Most campgrounds post all the information you need to select your campsite on their website. Here’s how to do it.

Study the map Typically, campgrounds post a map of their grounds on their website. Use it to identify the campsites that are suited to your needs. For example, you may require a site with electric outlets or that can accommodate a motorhome.

Once you’ve narrowed down your options, further re�ine your choices by seeing where amenities such as the bathrooms, showers and recreational facilities are located. How close or far away you want them to be from where you sleep is up to you.

Finally, think about accessibility. Can the campsite be reached by car or will you have to park elsewhere and carry your camping equipment?

Look at the photos Some campgrounds provide photos of all the campsites they have, whereas others only share pictures of the different types of sites offered. Take the time to go through these photographs. In particular, you may want to study the condition of the terrain, especially if you’re going to be sleeping in a tent.

Read the comments Do some more digging online to see if you can �ind comments from campers recommending particular campsites. There may be a comment section on the campground’s website. 5 simple towing tips for novices Drivers may haul trailers for a variety of reasons.

Some may haul trailers on vacation, while others may do so when moving to a new home. Regardless of why drivers tow, it’s important to keep certain things in mind before hitching up, especially for those drivers will little or no experience towing.

1. Use the right hitch. Novices may not immediately recognize if they have purchased an incorrectly sized hitch, but that might become apparent when the trailer is detached during a ride. Your vehicle owner’s manual may suggest which size hitch to use. If not, consult with a representative at your local auto parts retailer to determine the correct size.

2. Make sure the trailer is level. When attached to a vehicle, trailers should be level. Trailers that do not appear level or those that seem to be rising up and down on otherwise �lat roadways should be inspected if not brought to the attention of a mechanic.

3. Drive more carefully. Discomfort or inexperience may propel many drivers to be extra careful when towing a trailer, but even drivers with signi�icant experience towing trailers should keep greater distance between their vehicles and other cars and trucks sharing the road. That’s because braking takes longer for heavier vehicles, such as those towing trailers.

4. Practice turns. Turning is complicated when towing a trailer. Beginning a turn later can help drivers avoid having their trailers clip curbs, a potentially sticky situation that can cause trailers to �lip over.

5. Avoid reversing when possible. Many people towing trailers for the �irst time and even some drivers with signi�icant experience towing have dif�iculty going in reverse. Avoiding situations that require putting

vehicles in reverse is ideal for novices. Those who think they cannot avoid going in reverse should practice their technique in empty parking lots before hitting the road,

Bringing home the bacon

By Darcie Khounnoraj It’s that time of year again. Time to loosen the belt and make room for everything that is bacon.

The 2019 Great Saskatchewan Bacon Festival will be taking place at the Kipling Community Centre on Saturday, June 15th from noon to 4PM to celebrate its seventh year highlighting the savoury bacon delicacies made by local and professional kitchen masters.

Last year’s event attracted more than 230 people from Alberta, Manitoba and all over Saskatchewan, putting Kipling on the map for another unique experience.

The 2018 Great Saskatchewan Bacon Festival displayed a variety of sweet and savoury bacon samples including some of the fan favourites like bacon salted caramel marshmallow cannoli, Bacon Crusted smoked pork belly burnt ends, Elvis Presley cupcake, Triple bacon cream puffs and cinnamon buns with bacon. “(The Great Saskatchewan Bacon Festival) brings people from all over to experience the joy of Bacon,” Bacon Festival Committee Member, Judy Larson exclaimed.

“It’s funny, but you just never know how far the memorabilia items will travel! The guests who come to Kipling’s Bacon Festival, and then wear our aprons and tshirts in their travels, have been known to attract new guests from as far

away as Alberta!

And social media has certainly expanded our reach as well!”

More than twenty vendors are expected to showcase their bacon creations for the V.I.P (Very Important Pork Lover), Future V.I.P.’s (teens) and the Bacon Bits (6 and under) as they visit each station to sample the various bacon treats and dishes.

PANNA COTTA with strawberry coulis

This classic Italian dessert looks impressive and is surprisingly simple to prepare.

It’s sweetly creamy and tart, and the perfect way to end a summertime meal.

Start to �inish: 6 hours 15 minutes (15minutes active) Servings: 6 Ingredients • 3 cups table cream • 1 cup sugar, divided • 3 teaspoons vanilla extract • 1 package powdered gelatin • 2-1/2 tablespoons cold water • Vegetable oil or cooking spray • 4 cups hulled strawberries • Fresh mint leaves

Directions 1. In a small pot, combine the cream and 1/2 cup of sugar. Simmer over low heat for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and add the vanilla extract.

2. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, sprinkle the gelatin over the cold water. Let sit for 5 minutes, and then add a spoonful of the hot cream mixture to make sure the gelatin has dissolved completely. Stir the gelatin mixture into the cream and sugar.

3. Using cooking spray, oil the inside of 6 small ramekins. Divide the panna cotta mixture evenly between the ramekins, and refrigerate for at least 6 hours or overnight.

4. To make the coulis, puree the strawberries and remaining sugar in a food processor.

Refrigerate.

5. Remove panna cotta from the ramekins by dipping the bottom in cold water for a few seconds, running a knife around the side and

inverting onto a plate.

6. Pour about 1/3 of a cup of the strawberry coulis on each panna cotta and garnish with a fresh mint leaf.
