Container gardening Container gardening is a great art and can even make gardening easier. A number of years ago, I was spending a fair amount of time moving around, but I still wanted to garden. Hence, a necessity for a period of time soon developed into the regular way of gardening. Read on to learn just a little bit about why I am such a fan of containers in the landscape.

Anywhere in the landscape containers can have a place. We all cherish beauty in the landscape but convenience is also very important. Also, as life evolves we often have less space to garden in and time always seems to be in short supply. Containers can make life just a little bit easier....the catch is to learn how to garden in containers wisely.

Any container that holds soil or media and has drainage will work. However, if the container is in a full sun or a windy location, then bigger is always better. Bigger containers will not heat up as quickly and will not dry out so quickly when the hottest part of summer coincides with maximum growth of your plants.

What you �ill the container with is important as well when gardening in containers.The media used needs to be well-drained, be well aerated and yet still have the ability to retain moisture. It is not a good idea to just use regular soil you may have in your garden. A better choice is one part soil mixed with one part peat moss and one part vermiculate or perlite.

If your containers are very large and the plants you are growing do not need the entire container for their root mass, you can save money and media by �illing the bottom part of the container with some type of �iller instead of soil. If you happen to be placing containers in areas where they might be lifted and taken to a new location without permission then rocks as �iller are exceptional.

Where the containers are placed in the landscape will dictate what you can grow. Choosing plants that will do well in the location of the container is really key to success. This makes sense as also when planting plants in other parts of the landscape you also need to choose plants that will thrive in the location where they are planted. It is also important to place plants in the container that have similar cultural needs.

Once you have these simple guidelines in order, then the fun part of container gardening takes over.

Create interesting combination of colours and textures that will stay attractive throughout the growing season. Plant them attractively so that you show the plants off to their best advantage. Slightly over-

planting the container early in the growing season will ensure they look fabulous from day one. Simply remove some of the �iller plants as the season progresses to ensure all plants still have adequate space to grow right until freeze up.

Containers will need to be watered and fertilized a bit more often than those plants growing in the ground so ensure that you make this part of your maintenance easy. Prior to planting seed the media with osmocote (pelleted, slow release fertilizer) to ensure that plant has feed throughout the growing season. You will still have to fertilize in order to get the best show, but if you miss a time or two the plants will still �lourish. When fertilizing you can either feed once a week or each time you water use a dilute fertilizer solution.

By Chris L. Istace A single tie is the only result keeping the Carlyle Cardinals from a perfect start to their 2018 Saskota Baseball League campaign.

The Cardinals defeated the Kenosee Cubs 14-0 on June 5 to boost their record to �ive wins and one tie, giving them �irst place in the league standings. The Oxbow Chiefs have six wins and a loss, but Carlyle’s one game-in-hand as of press time had them in top spot with a .917 win percentage.

Carlyle tied the Carnduff Astros 1-1 to open the season on May 15.

The Estevan Tower Wolves followed in third with four wins and one loss. The Wolves defeated the winless Carnduff Astros 7-0 last Tuesday, boosting their road record to 2-1.

The remaining result from June 5 included Oxbow’s

14-0 annihilation of the Kipling Royals. The previous night, the Kenosee Cubs defeated the Windthorst Pirates 10-3.

Carlyle may have a grip on �irst place for the moment, but its run production falls short of both Oxbow’s and Estevan’s scoring abilities. Through seven games, the Chiefs have scored 78 runs (11.41 average per game) while holding their opponents to 3.29 runs per game.

Carlyle maintained a 2 runs-against average and 8.83 runs-for as of press time last week.

The Tower Wolves were second in scoring with 10.40 runs per game.

The rest of the league standings have the Arcola Threshers in fourth (three wins, one loss); the 2-3 Redvers A’s and Windthorst Pirates in �ifth; and the Kenosee Cubs in seventh with a 1-3 record. The Kipling Royals, the Carnduff Astros and the Southeast Fireballs are yet

to earn their �irst victory of the season.

The top teams, including the Estevan Tower Wolves, played a total of seven games after press time, including a match between Carlyle and Oxbow last evening.

Results for these and six other games were unavailable before publication.

This week’s Saskota Baseball League action includes four games on Thursday evening. All games start at 6:30 p.m. except the match between the Redvers A’s and the Tower Wolves in Estevan, which will begin at 7 p.m. Elsewhere, the Southeast Fireballs visit the Arcola Threshers; the Kenosee Cubs are in Oxbow to face the Chiefs; and the Carnduff Astros meet the Carlyle Cardinals.

On Friday, the Kipling Royals visit the Windthorst Pirates, while the Kenosee Cubs host the Southeast Fireballs on Sunday. Games in Carnduff, Redvers and Arcola are scheduled to occur Tuesday evening.

Welcome back burrowing owls After spending the winter in sunny Mexico and the Southwestern United States, one of Saskatchewan’s most iconic species at risk has returned to their breeding grounds for the season – welcome back Burrowing Owls! After migration, these endangered owls are busy! They are starting the mating process, �inding a home, and laying and incubating their eggs.

Burrowing Owls are identi�iable by their small size; they are only 9 inches tall! They have light and dark brown mottled plumage with white spots, a round head with large yellow eyes, and white ‘eyebrows’. One of their key features is their long featherless legs that gives the appearance of walking on stilts. Unlike some other owl species, Burrowing Owls are active during the day; especially in the spring and early summer when the male is busy gathering food for his family. During the nesting season, male Burrowing Owls can often be seen standing next to the burrow or on nearby fence posts while the female is in the burrow incubating the eggs. Burrowing owls make a few different chuckling or chattering calls and bob their heads to express excitement or distress.

To ensure the nesting success of Burrowing Owls, it is important to minimize human activity around the nests as much as possible. However, Burrowing Owls coexist with grazing very well. In fact, grazing is extremely bene�icial to the Burrowing Owl. Kaytlyn Burrows, Habitat Stewardship Coordinator at Nature Saskatchewan, explains why: “On grazed pastures, the shorter grass gives Burrowing Owls the chance to sight possible predators more effectively. Additionally, the owls use manure inside their nests to absorb excess moisture, regulate burrow temperature, attract insects for food, and hide their scent from predators.”

If you discover Burrowing Owls in your pasture, do not fear! There are many advantages to having these owls on your land, especially the free pest control. “Burrowing Owls eat huge numbers of insects, mice, voles, and grasshoppers,” says Burrows. “One nest of Burrowing Owls can consume over 1,000 or more rodents in a single season!”

Nature Saskatchewan’s stewardship program Operation Burrowing Owl works with landowners to conserve and enhance Burrowing Owl habitat, and

monitors Burrowing Owl numbers at participating sites. “We are very fortunate to have so many passionate landowners participating in the program and keeping a look-out for Burrowing Owls,” says Burrows.

Operation Burrowing Owl records sightings to help determine the population trend and distribution of the Burrowing Owl throughout Saskatchewan. The information can then be used towards efforts to restore the population of these amazing creatures.

“Without the voluntary efforts of landowners, land managers, and the general public, recovery of

3. Incorporate �lour and baking powder. Mix until batter is smooth.

Add the frozen raspberries.

4. Pour mixture into a greased loaf pan.

5. Bake for 60 minutes or until a fork inserted comes out clean.

6. While the loaf is baking, whip the cream and sugar. Set aside in the fridge.

7. Remove baked cake from the pan and let cool.

8. Before serving, garnish each slice of cake with whipped cream, fresh raspberries and mint leaves.

Carlyle Golf Club provides family-friendly day on the course

By Chris L. Istace With few water hazards; wide, forgiving fairways; no sand traps; and �irst-rate putting surfaces, the Carlyle Golf Club is one of the most easygoing golf facilities in the region.

Although �irst established in the early 1960s, the golf club was redesigned to incorporate grass greens in 1999.

Since then, the nine-hole track has been groomed to near perfection under the careful eye of greenskeeper Steve Polsom.

“The advantage of having someone like that is the course comes out from the tarps almost playable from day one in the spring,” says Carlyle Golf Club manager Martin Tourand. “He’s right on top of his stuff so well that the maintenance is done right down to a tee. The course stays in very, very good shape, even in trying times like we’ve had this spring (with dry weather conditions).”

The golf club, which entertains swingers of all levels, is an exemplary facility for developing players. Number two, the course’s longest hole, is a 490-yard, par-�ive that plays straight as an arrow.

Meanwhile, the next pin reaches just 168 yards for a par three.

The primary challenge on the course is

Hole 8, where its white tees measure 377 yards to the pin on a dog-leg right, par-four. The course, overall, plays at 2804 yards from the white tees and 2152 yards from the red tees. It has a par of 35, with one par-�ive, two par-three holes and six par-fours.

“It’s not a really tough course, but we’ve got some of the nicest greens in Southern Saskatchewan,” Tourand says. “Plus, there is no sand. All of our bunkers are grass, so it’s easier to play.”

Outside of a planned expansion of the tee box on Hole 4, the course is played as it has stood since 1999. However, Tourand noted that the facility budgets $2000 annually to plant more trees on a facility that is otherwise fairly wide open.

The club hosts a plethora of weekly events to keep area golfers involved. Men’s Night is held every Monday evening, while the women tee off Tuesdays and Pairs Night is held on Thursdays. All of these have a tee-time of 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, Senior Men’s division golfers gather every Tuesday and Friday at 9 a.m.

events throughout the playing season. This year, the Saskatchewan Elks Association will play their annual meet on the course in June, while a yearly fundraiser for the Carlyle Fire Department is scheduled to take place in August.

This summer, the Carlyle Golf Club is being sloped and rated by Golf Canada for more serious golfers who need to keep track of their handicaps.

“Quite a few of our members go south every year and some go to tournaments that require handicaps,” said Tourand. “Also, by joining Golf Canada and Golf Saskatchewan, we get extra insurance coverage as well.”

Once your round is completed, the full-service clubhouse serves soup, sandwiches, hot dogs and other treats in a fully-licensed gathering space that includes an outdoor seating area.

Four good reasons to work this summer (that aren’t the paycheque!)

Three tips for safe fishing Like to �ish? To enjoy the rivers and lakes safely this summer, be sure to follow these tips.

1. Bring the right gear Be sure to bring and wear your own lifejacket. You should also bring paddles, a bucket to bail out the boat, a whistle, a waterproof �lashlight and a �irst aid kit. This equipment is necessary for your safety.

Be sure to also bring a change of clothes, food, water (even if you’re only going to be gone for a few hours), sunglasses, sunscreen, and bug repellent.

2. Be smart about how you plan your trip Check the weather forecast regularly to be sure there are no dangers on the horizon (high winds, thunderstorms, etc.). This will also help you to choose the right clothing.Also inspect your equipment thoroughly to be sure you have enough gas for the trip. Let someone know where you’re planning to go and when you plan to be back.

3. Be careful at all times It’s best to avoid going �ishing by yourself. Be sure to follow all the rules of good navigation and always be aware of your boat’s capabilities. Don’t exceed the boat’s recommended weight limit, which applies to both passengers and equipment. You should also avoid making sudden movements or getting up quickly in a small boat so you don’t capsize. Finally, never drink alcohol on board a boat — or before you go out on the water!

Before going on your �ishing trip, be sure you have all the necessary permits and certi�ications. Also, check up on any quotas that might apply to your catch.

You can also explore unknown parts of a new country while doing the sport that you love. There are lots of companies that specialize in sports tourism (trips can last a day, a week, or longer) for athletes of all skill levels.

In short, sports tourism will allow you to visit fascinating new places and meet new people. It will also feed your passion for sport and keep you in shape during your vacation. What more could you ask for?

When we think about our country’s First Peoples, one image that often comes to mind is the totem pole. While you’re probably aware that these sculptures are rooted in First Nations culture, how much do you know about their history and signi�icance?
