Former southeast Saskatchewan resident releases new book to help people going through a tough time

Denise Anderson hopes sharing her experiences about divorce in a small town can help people enduring a similar situation.

Anderson, a former Carlyle resident who now lives in Regina and works as a life coach, has released Small Town Divorce: A Road Map through Devastation, Despair and Drama. The book was available for download through amazon.ca on June 5.

A hard-copy version of her story will be available a short time after its release on Amazon. The publisher has yet to be determined.

“I just felt that by sharing my story and my experiences, I can help other people navigate their own way through a divorce,” said Anderson.

Going through a divorce is a challenging time, but it’s made even more difficult when it happens in a smaller community where everybody knows everybody and their personal situation.

“I just thought it was an important factor to talk about, and to address that dynamic when you’re going through a divorce,” said Anderson.

At times people going

through a divorce can feel like a fish out of water and gasping for air, she said, and they want clarity in times of uncertainty.

“The book is like a road map, kind of helping people to navigate their way down that road of divorce, whether they’re in the throes of it now or even being out of it for a little while, I find that people are still having a difficult time dealing with the emotional roller coaster that comes with going through a divorce.”

While the book talks about living in a small town when a marriage is falling apart, it can be directed to anyone experiencing a divorce. Someone might live in a big city, but they will still be part of a small community, such as a suburb, an apartment building or a sports team.

Anderson also draws on the experiences of other people she has encountered over the past 12 years when writing the book.

“I do use examples of other people I have worked with and their experiences as well, and how they were able to work through that process,” she said.

them to know that it will get better.

“Going through a challenging experience like this can be overwhelming, so I would hope they would know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, and it’s not always going to be like this,” she said.

“Reaching out for that extra support or tools or techniques to help navigate their way through it would actually create more grace and ease through their experience.”

Anderson started working on the book early this year. Her father had been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer, and in the final period of his life, Anderson asked him if there was anything he hadn’t done. He wished he had written a book.

“I made a promise to him that I would write at least one book before I passed away, or I was on my death bed,” she said.

As for the reading in Bienfait, Anderson said it was a good event despite only a handful of people turning out. But she is always willing to talk about her experiences no matter the size of the audience.

Riding for Ovarian Cancer Awareness

Six months ago, Thompson’s sister, Sheila Rae passed away at the tender age of 59 after three years, two surgeries and chemotherapy to treat her nonresponsive stage 3 ovarian cancer.

Research into this type of cancer is lagging about 50 years behind that of other cancers and Thompson wants to do everything she can to bring awareness to the need for more research to find a screening test to ensure early detection and alternate treatments.

Raising personal awareness and stimulating public action has led to talks in campgrounds and anywhere there is an interested audience.

When asked why a bike ride across Canada, Thompson stated that she loved to ride her bike and after a 30-year hiatus, she decided to get back in the saddle, so to speak, to raise funds for this valuable research. According to Ovarian Cancer Canada, no one has ridden across Canada for this cause, so Thompson undertook a month-long ride through the Pamir Mountains in Central Asia to gear up for the next adventure. After more than two months riding, she can safely say that the Rockies were not nearly the challenge of her previous route. A friend in the Bienfait area saw on Facebook that Anderson was releasing a book and was willing to participate in author readings to talk about her experiences.

Similar events have been held in Montmartre on Mother’s Day, and she has another reading booked for Regina on June 26.

Anderson has already started working on a follow-up book for Small Town Divorce. She doesn’t know if it will materialize as quickly as her debut release, but it won’t be too long before it is out.

And she’s also willing to provide a free copy of the book if they request it on her website at www.deniseanderson. net.

The stop in Carlyle has special meaning to the couple from Christina Lake BC. A friend of theirs, British Columbia artist Beverly Reid nee Williams, was raised here and they were collecting pictures and items to take back to her. The Williams family owned a hardware store and Carlyle resident, Wimp (Ralph) Lothian tells me it would have been located just north of the Observer building.

After a visit to the Rusty Relics Museum, an overnight stay in the Lions Park Campground and a stop at the Carlyle Bakery for some famous cinnamon buns the couple were on their way with a simple request - Print the signs of Ovarian cancer and the Facebook link.

Populism has shift, expecially in rural Sask.

If you live in rural Saskatchewan, especially on the farms, they may be your neighbours. But your neighbours will be much further apart than your parents’ neighbours and certainly your grandparents’ neighbours.

Likely, more of your friends are not necessarily people in your community but people you are drawn to by shared values and beliefs.

Better roads, telephones and now social media means you may spend less time interacting with those people than those in your community, making the definition of “community” a lot different than in past generations.

This makes the modern-day politics slightly more challenging.

It’s now less about catering to specific communities than those specific beliefs. But, really, what it is good, old-fashion populism in a different form.

Back in the day, New Democrats and old CCFers politicians believed they met the very definition of a populist, “a political approach that strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups.”

An most on the farm or in small towns in Saskatchewan back then considered themselves disregarded by the establishment.

But such notions gave rise to community spirit of people pulling together. In turn, that gave rise to rural collectively concepts like the local Pool elevator, Co-op store and Credit Union that played into the NDP philosophy.

So along comes a leader like Tommy Douglas running under the banner that he and the CCF were all about the little guy.

We all are likely familiar with his Mouseland story which was all about black or white cats make rules and decisions to be benefit the rich, but really didn’t do much for the poor mice. This was the mantra of a populist.

And from the time of the first Douglas election win that occurred 75 years ago this week to the time of the election of Brad Wall’s Saskatchewan Party 12 years ago, the NDP ran on that populist message.

It was a successful formula, with governance in Saskatchewan uninterrupted except by the Ross Thatcher Liberals in the 1960s and the Grant Devine Conservatives in 1980s, it was a formula that was generally successful.

Unfortunately for the NDP, the massive changes in the last forty years seemed to escape the NDP. Especially over the last 10 to 20 years, Saskatchewan has become a place of growing affluence. Average weekly salary have done up and so have farm income receipts have also increased Farming became a more entrepreneurial, marketing business longer in need of the Wheat Pool or the Canadian Wheat Board, with less interest and certainly less need in having an local co-op or credit union in each and every small Saskatchewan now.

All that said, there nevertheless remains a strong feeling among many in Saskatchewan they. disregarded by the elite. For the most part, that means a distance elite federal government, especially the current Liberal government in Ottawa.

That’s a huge problem for the NDP that have always addressed disenfranchisement by vowing to provide services to those in need.

Today’s populist view is less about wanting or needing government services. And that feeling of dependence from government generally means less interest in paying taxes and less interest in a collective/co-operative approach to anything.

Today, it’s far more likely to see a populist notion catch fire on the internet than to see it spread from community to community.

So, for many, a four-cent-a-litre carbon tax on gas to collective deal with global warming now seems the ultimate case of the elite ignoring that ordinary people want.

Such an approach is a big problem for the NDP right now.

Populism is still going strong. But sure seems to have shifted to the right.

Treating our brains like a slot machine I didn’t get to know her very well prior to the accident. She was one of many new students that fall. We had two or three conversations at most before the weekend in September when the vehicle she was in flipped several times and left her with a brain injury.

Our brains are remarkable organs always at work sensing, processing, reasoning, learning, Shelley Luedtke thinking, moving and regulating.

I remember being given a rather bumpy-looking diagram of the brain in health class to color and label. I disliked doing tasks like that so much. But when our teacher began talking about how our brains worked I was hooked. To this day I remember a lot of what we studied—and years later recognizing what we didn’t study. We didn’t talk about how to take care of our brains.

The consequences of concussions in athletes is well documented. A U.S. federal judge approved a plan by the NFL to resolve thousands of concussion lawsuits that could cost the league $1 billion over 65 years. The settlement offers retired players coverage for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS and dementia. As of June 10, $659,505,421 in claims have been approved.

Multiple concussions may not be a risk factor for most of us but if we were warned about things that could be harmful to our brain would we take evasive action to be as protective as we could?

We’ve been cautioned for years about what is happening to our necks, shoulders and eyes due to the amount of time we are hunched over staring at our devices, but are we listening to what it is doing to our brain? The individuals who engineer content delivery on our devices are working hard to get us feeling we need to constantly check in and see what’s there. A former product manager for the largest player in the game said it is like a slot machine. Each

time we check our phones we are anticipating what we might get: messages, likes, comments or new followers. There are millions of computer calculations being used every moment to constantly tweak our online experience to make us come back for more.

They know the best moments to give us those rewards which then trigger our brains to make us want more. Our limbic systems get fired up and the stress hormone cortisol is released. In the right amounts it helps regulate our bodily systems, but as it spikes it interferes with learning, memory and our ability to think abstractly. It’s affecting our brains.

There was tremendous excitement when scientists built the SpiNNaker, a computer that directly mimics the workings of the human brain. The supercomputer was ten years in the making and has the capacity to perform 200 quadrillion actions simultaneously. Yet as impressive as this might be it still can’t rival the human brain. “For now,” stated lead researcher Steve Furber, “exactly simulating a human brain is simply not possible. Even with a million processors, we can only approach 1 percent of the scale of the human brain, and that’s with a lot of simplifying assumptions.”

A team of people at the school where I worked were given background in brain injuries so we could better understand how to support our student as she continued her education. Many times I found myself wishing we could return to the day before everything changed for her.

More than half of traumatic brain injuries are caused by accidents. We can’t prevent everything that might happen to our brains but we need to do what we can while we still can.

This amazing organ, lumpy in appearance and extraordinary in function, deserves the best we can do for it. Slow down. Wear a helmet. Sleep. Exercise. Read. Talk to people. Put down the phone. We don’t need to be brain scientists to take care of our cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem. We just need to recognize how truly precious it is. That’s my outlook.

Financial Focus Managing Your Money

Why you need to report the sale of your home Most Canadians know they don’t usually have to pay tax on the capital gain on the sale of their principal residence and, until recently, you weren’t required to report the sale on your tax return. But while the capitals gains on your home may still be exempted from tax, there are new reporting requirements that, if not followed properly, could cause you some major tax-related headaches.

In October 2016, the Canadian government announced new administrative changes requiring everyone to report the sale of their home on their tax return. If the sale is not reported, you could be re-assessed and the new rules permit the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to review prop-

erty sales beyond the standard reassessment period. You may even be subject to a penalty in the future up to a maximum of $8,000. CRA has stated that it is unlikely a penalty will be issued if the sale occurred in 2016, given that the reporting requirement is brand new, but it may not be so lenient going forward.

The new rule is part of the government’s attempt to rein in potential abuses of the principal residence exemption (PRE), such as non-Canadian residents claiming the exemption and others claiming it on a second property in the same year. Usually, 50% of a capital gain on an asset will be included in income and taxed accordingly. But the PRE allows Canadian residents to

be exempt from paying tax on capital gains on their principal residence. Only one property can be designated per year as a principal residence, therefore capital gains may be taxable on the sale of a second property, like a cottage.

Going forward, in 2017 and later years, you will have to fill out both Schedule 3 of the T1 tax return, and also will have to complete form T2091 (or Form T1255). This applies if the property sold was your principal residence for all years of ownership or if you are designating a property as a principal residence for only some of the years it was owned, e.g. when a cottage will be designated for one or more of those years. Information required includes the date the

property was acquired, the address of the property, and the proceeds received.

Though the change has been public since October 2016, it hasn’t been widely publicized. The bottom line is this: if you sell your home in the 2016 tax year or later, there are additional requirements you have to follow to avoid any potential penalties for late filing. Most individuals previously eligible to claim the PRE will continue to remain eligible, but the CRA will now have a record of that

claim.

Preventing animal-borne illnesses

Zoonotic diseases, or zoonoses, are illnesses that are transmitted to humans by animals through scratches, bites or contact with infected feces. It’s also possible to become infected with a zoonotic disease after eating raw or undercooked meat.

Here are some tips for preventing animal-borne illnesses: • Wash your hands after contact with animals or their excrement.

• Clean scratches and bites from animals thoroughly with soap and water, and seek medical attention if the wound came from a wild animal.

• Reduce your pet’s chance of carrying a zoonosis by keeping their vaccines up to date.

• Clean your cat’s litter box often. Pregnant women should delegate this task to someone else.

• When outdoors in the summer, protect yourself

from ticks, mosquitoes and other insects by using insect repellent, and keeping your skin covered.

• Avoid contact with wild animals.

While it’s possible to contract an illness from your pet, the benefits of living with an animal far outweigh the risks. Basic personal hygiene and keeping a clean home will prevent most zoonotic diseases.

• We had a report of a sign being shot. I would not want to live around any sign in rural Saskatchewan. I don’t get the novelty of shooting signs but it happens.

• If you are on conditions to not drink, be of good behaviour and reside at a certain place you should not attract attention to yourself.

Thus, when you are drunk and knocking on someone’s door they may call the Police and you may find yourself in the custody of the constabulary. Now if you also have warrants . . . yup, they had warrants as well. Not too smart.

• Arcola Agencies was broken into the evening of the 29th, morning of the 30th of May. Our Forensic Identification Section attended, however, at this time we have no suspects.

• We would like to remind students, and their teachers that if you are doing a video project you can not break the law in the process. The video may just become the evidence that will convict you. This relates directly to an investigation we have on going right now.

• The ALPRS (automated licence plate reading system) located a stolen vehicle, which resulted in an arrest of a driver for possessing stolen property, and a 72 hr suspension., which in reality is just a paperwork exercise being they were prohibited, and yes, they were charged

with that as well.

• Someone broke the window of a bunk house at the Resort. If you know who did it, or if you have also been a victim of vandalism please contact us.

• We are investigating incidents of youth on golf carts and a small tractor pulling other youth on skateboards.

This is against the law and we are looking into these incidents.

• One family member was upset that a sibling may have attended their property. They are OK with their parent attending, however, not the sibling. Basically, not our problem.

• An intoxicated individual was playing in the lake. They were subsequently lodged for their safety and the safety of others. They dried up and dried out and were released the following day.

• We were called to deal with another intoxicated individual and provided them a “Buffalo Cab” ride to a place where they were somewhat welcome.

• An intoxicated individual called to report another intoxicated individual threw water on them and drove away. It seems they were more upset about the water. Patrols were made, however, the alleged impaired driver was not located, however, they may have returned and slashed the tires of our complainant. We are not really sure being the complainant was not only intoxicated, they were also uncooperative.

• Members responded to a collision with a moose. There were no injuries, however, the calf did not survive and the vehicle had to be towed. We had another couple collisions with a deer where the vehicles also required a tow truck, however, the deer

• Members are looking into a injury collision involving an ATV and another injury collision involving a motorcycle.

• We had an individual report they were upset that another individual walking a dog on a grid road swore at them when they went past and got “dusted”.

The speeds were admittedly under 80 km/hr but over 50 km/hr. They felt it would have been safer for them to walk the dog on the highway.

Regardless, pedestrians are permitted to walk on our roadways. Generally, we expect drivers to slow down and show respect.

In reality it only delays you a few seconds.

• A rollover collision was reported which resulted in the sole occupant being injured and transported to Regina for treatment. Members believed alcohol to be a factor and a blood demand was made and samples of the individuals blood were obtained.

These samples will be analysed at an RCMP Laboratory so as we can determine the blood alcohol concentration.

• We had another individual that broke the mirror on another vehicle then got into their vehicle and drove away. When located by the Police they refused to provide a sample of their breath into an approved screening device.

They were subsequently charged with refusal, fingerprinted and had their vehicle seized.

• Members wrote approximately 20 tickets and 30 warning notices over the last week.

• Tickets were issued for no insurance - $580, fail to wear seatbelt $175, drive left of centre when unsafe to do so $150, cell phone - $280, drive without a licence - $150, window tint $115, fail to produce registration - $100, and most expensive speeding ticket was for $843 • Warnings were issued for no insurance, fail to stop at stop sign, speeding, drive left of centre when unsafe to do so, fail to produce drivers licence, fail to have licence plate properly secured, insecure load, and use licence plate on wrong vehicle.

• Inspection notices were issued for mudflaps, produce valid drivers licence, window tint, replace licence plates, replace mirror and replace windshield.

Having to go to the washroom is not an excuse to speed.

June is Lipedema Awareness Month

By Mary Moffat marymoffat@sasktel.net When Connie Young’s mother and aunt went to a Cardiologist appointment in Mesa Arizona in 2015, he made an offhand comment about something genetic going on with their legs. After hearing about the doctor’s comment, Connie began searching the internet using the key words ‘big legs, genetic’ and found answers to something that had weighed heavily on her for many years – both physically and mentally. Finally, there was a glimmer of enlightenment regarding her own health issues.

Young had been to the doctor many times throughout her life and many of them believed that she was unable to lose the weight on her legs because she wasn’t trying hard enough. One went so far as to recommend bariatric surgery. It was very freeing to finally have a diagnosis of lipedema, a chronic medical condition that affects approximately 11% of women. It is characterized by a symmetric buildup of adipose tissue (fat) in the legs and arms. A common but under recognized disorder, lipedema may cause pain, swelling and easy bruising. It may be accompanied by an unusual texture within the fat that can feel like rice, peas or walnuts beneath the surface of the skin. Lipedema is not rare, but a proper diagnosis is rarely made. Few physicians are comfortable diagnosing and treating lipedema because of the lack of diagnostic tests and research-backed treatments. Alongside the physical pain symptoms, it can impact mental health and quality of life, leading to lack of energy, low self-esteem, feelings of hopelessness or even eating disorders. Lipedema was first reported in literature at the Mayo Clinic in 1940, and knowledge in the area of lipedema spread across Europe, especially in Germany and Austria, and is slowly advancing in the US and Canada. Lipedema fat does not reduce through either diet or exercise but can managed once a person knows what it is.

Lipedema is often confused with Lymphedema,

which results from a failure to pump lymph fluid out of the limb or damaged lymphatic vessels that leak an abundance of lymph fluid resulting in pooling in the hand or foot, eventually spreading up the arm or leg. Advanced stages of Lipedema can, however, cause lymphedema as well. This is known as Lipolymphedema.

Young’s investigation led her to Dr. David Amron, in California, where she had Lymph sparing surgery, the removal of the abnormal fat cells between the skin and muscle. She had 2 separate surgeries, which are not covered by Canadian healthcare benefits. After the surgery, Young had manual lymph drainage therapy with a specialized therapist daily and once back in Canada drove to Weyburn a couple times a week for a few months for the therapy. She also had her legs wrapped with foam and bandages for three months and then compression daily for a few months. She now manages the inflammation by following a ketogenic way of eating and does not have to wear compression all the time.

Dianne Wilson was diagnosed with Lipedema 35 years ago by a South African doctor who recognized the disorder but didn’t know where to send her for treatment. She would go to her doctor and tell him all of her pain and symptoms but until she saw Connie’s story, she didn’t know treatment was available.

Last October Dianne had Lymphoscintigraphy – a nuclear test that shows how much lipedema/lymphedema the patient has.

Since there is so little information available, Young and Wilson are excited to be a part of the new Saskatchewan Lipedema Association, formed in April of this year. They are also wanting to start a support group in this area so that people have someone to share their experiences and feelings with.

Barry and Nicole Easton of New Castle, New South Wales, Australia visited with George Easton and several other family members and renewed acquaintances in this area.

They have returned home after being here for two weeks.

Wawota was a busy place this past weekend. Residents had lots of events to attend. The 19th Town Wide Garage Sale was held on Saturday. The weather was sort of “iffy” in the morning but it turned out fine. I didn’t make a fortune but enjoyed lots of visiting.

Fairmede Fair celebrating its 127th year was on Saturday and Sunday. This included 4-H Beef Club judging, a horse show, and domestic, fancy work and youth exhibits on Saturday. Sunday included a church service and lunch.

A bridal shower was held in Carnduff for Ellen Revet(a local school teacher) on June 8. She and Jordan Fox will be married on September 21 in Carnduff.

Another bridal shower of interest was held at the home of Derek and Jen Bruce to honor bride-elect Deanna Bruce. She and Ryan Taylor will be married later this summer.

Regina man completes 18-hole, grass green Saskatchewan course crusade Written by Clark Stork The following article has been reprinted from Golf Saskatchewan website.

With what started as a casual golf conversation over coffee with a co-worker, Blair Lothian took it upon himself to get an eye-witness account of every 18-hole, grass green golf course in Saskatchewan, two decades later the bucket list is complete.

In late May, the retired 60-year-old SaskTel employee used the Saskatoon Golf and Country Club’s “member for a day” promotion to play his 60th course and wrap up his provincial tour. Growing up in Carlyle (the son of the late Ronald and Joan Lothian), Lothian has always been an avid golfer, as his life progressed he stopped short of saying the sport has become an addiction, he simply says he’s passionate. The first “qualifying” course he said he played was Golf Kenosee, which makes sense being a youngster from the region. Lothian explained that he can’t recall the first course he played regarding this task, if he had teed off at a course prior to his idea to play the courses he didn’t make a point to revisit the club. Of all the courses he’s visited, he said one private club in Saskatoon stood out.

“Riverside Country Club,” he said to Golf Saskatchewan via email. “The entire course is so meticulously maintained and includes spectacular views along the South Saskatchewan River.”

Although he pointed to the Bridge City club as his favourite he said the province boasts several amazing facilities.

“There are many fantastic courses in Saskatchewan, Golf Kenosee, White Bear, the Evergreen in Nipawin, and Dakota Dunes all come to mind. My home course of Deer Valley has one of the most beautiful natural layouts in the province as well and the rebuilt 12th green is only days away from being in play,” Lothian said.

The group of golf fanatics “christened” the event the “The Spackler,” named after Bill Murray’s famous character from Caddy Shack. The friends even got their own green jacket for the winner to proudly where. He said one trip took them to Blueberry Hill Golf Course near Livelong, SK. During the round a proud peacock strutted onto the course. One of the group quickly quipped, “I wonder what those taste like?”

“It’s a pet!” replied the course owner, much to the hilarity of the rest of their playing partners.

When asked about memorable shots or moments Lothian recounted a mid-week round at York Lake in Yorkton, which is now a 12-hole facility that wouldn’t make Lothian’s list today. He said he was close to that magical ace, but he was alone.

“I hit my tee ball solid and right at the flag, but then strangely as the ball was in mid-flight I had a brief anxiety attack as it occurred to me that as I was playing alone, what would I do if it went in?”

He did secure his first, and only hole-in-one on March 27, 2015 in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Aside from playing the many beautiful courses the province has to offer, Lothian said the people he’s met and just the roads leading far and wide across the province added to the value of his completed mission. He said many trips stand out for more than the golf.

“Perhaps most memorably was the trip on the July long weekend in 2014,” he recalled. “At this point I had four courses remaining to play, Riverside and Saskatoon Golf and Country Club, and two in the northwest, Meadow Lake Golf Club and Northern Meadows near Goodsoil. My wife (Val) and I drove up there for the singular purpose of playing these two golf courses. We stayed at a bed and breakfast in Pierceland that was spectacular in every way. One is very far north and west at this point in Saskatchewan, so we drove 50 minutes to Cold Lake, Alberta for dinner one evening.”

Lothian’s passion for the game continues and he is now spreading his golf experiences across North America and across the ocean. He recently attended a practice round at Augusta National during the Masters, he’s going to take in an Open practice round at Royal Portrush and in July he’s “fulfilling a lifelong dream” of playing the Old Course at St. Andrews.

Rusty Relics Museum serves up a taste of history

Thursday, June 6 the parking lot of the Rusty Relics Museum was hopping as people gathered from all around to enjoy a BBQ hotdog or burger, fried onions, drink and an ice cream treat. Museum board members as well as a few members of the local RCMP manned the grill and served their guests, as everyone soaked up the sunshine and visited with people from far and wide. We are excited for next year’s track season as everyone continues to improve each year as a result of their hard work!

There are lots of sport finals being held on television – now I’m not one to really enjoy the NHL hockey games, especially with no Canadian teams involved, so I just leave those for anyone who enjoys watching hockey. However the game that I’m really tied up in is the NBA – not that I ever played basketball, but hey there’s a Canadian team that’s really showing how the game should to be played – Go Raptors Go. There’s also a Canadian woman’s team which is among the top soccer teams – Go Canada Go. Hate to mention football at this time – Saskatchewan didn’t do too well in the pre-season games – guess we’ll just have to hope that when the season games begin that Saskatchewan will have their socks pulled up, kinks ironed out and be able to show us how the game should be played – Go Riders Go. It’s Father’s Day on Sunday, June 16 – hope all Dads have a great day and get to enjoy whatever it is that they wish to do – Happy Father’s Day fellas.

Margaret Peet spent June 6 in Regina and later accompanied Parry and Lynette Peet to the football game.

Lil Patton and Sheri Patton spent a few days (June 5-8) in Calgary where Sheri attended a business meeting and they both enjoyed a visit with Wendy, Rob Lutzer and girls Kayley and Reece.

Shelly Cowan drove her daughter Ainsley and other classmates on June 7 on a class field trip to Cannington Manor. There were other parents who also helped to provide transportation for the students on their field trip.

Tim, Shelly and Ainsley Cowan spent Saturday, June 8 in Minot visiting the Nilsen family.

We received very much needed moisture on June 8 – hoping it was an all-day shower, however we only received three-tenths but at this late date we will take and appreciate all moisture we can get.

This moisture at least filled my rain barrel and I also managed to fill three other five-gallon pails so I’ll have water to water my flowerpots again. Maybe now that some rain has fallen we will receive more later on. I’m hoping that this little moisture will help to start the small seeds to sprout in the garden.

I have noticed that my beans and the potatoes are coming up nicely – so fingers crossed more seeds will now come (I’m sure the weeds will – darn).

I understand that Redvers has held their graduation, not having anyone graduating from RHS I didn’t realize it was happening – anyway Congratulations Grads and best wishes in your future endeavour. This year Alida has only one graduate, and he’s attending Oxbow Prairie Horizons School – Christian Lemieux – Congratulations Christian and best of luck in the future.

Sincere Sympathy to the family of Marie Anne Lemieux who passed away at the age of 92 years on June 7/ at the Deer View Lodge, Wawota. She was born, raised and lived in the Cantal area until her health began to fail, she then moved to the Sunrise Villa, Maryfield and later to the Deer View Lodge. Marie Anne was predeceased by her parents Ernest and Marie Lemieux and her 14 siblings and their spouses.

She is survived by one sister-in-law Margaret (Boody) Lemieux and numerous nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be held June

Farm Credit donates to CES breakfast program Farm Credit Canada (FCC) is contributing $100,000 to school meal programs across Canada as part of FCC Drive Away Hunger.

For a third year in a row, FCC is supporting meal programs offered at 100 schools across Canada.

Recipient schools were selected based on need by local FCC offices.

This year, the FCC office in Carlyle gave $1,000 to (Carlyle Elementary School) to support its food program.

Maryfield is a Haven of Beauty, with lilac and chokecherry in full bloom. At last I found the name of the blooming tree in our courtyard. Alan Daku, Violet’s horticulturalist son, says it is a Manchurian Goldenbark Cherry.

Most of the village of Kennedy gathered for Violet’s 88th birthday.

The German Mennonite Church of Maryfield brought us worship last week with the family of Kornelia and Lucas Ens leading; her brother Willie and sisters Tina and Evelina on piano, Kornelia on violin.

Sandra Dick and her sisters also led us, with flutes and singing one evening.

Alas! For the yellow ladyslippers of Maryfield! Two years ago there were several blooming in the ditch north of the rink. This year only dandelions.

Small trees were menacing the foundation and a bulldozer went through. This year a rotory mower has cut back the grass around the tress where a few had survived. A handful have been transplanted to the courtyard. If you have this endangered species along your ditches, cherish them Saskatchewan.
