On Thursday, June 6 the parking lot of the Rusty Relics Museum was hopping as people gathered from all around to enjoy a BBQ hotdog or burger, fried onions, drink and an ice cream treat. Museum board members as well as a few members of the local RCMP manned the grill and served their guests, as everyone soaked up the sunshine and visited with people from far and wide. The annual BBQ is free to the public, with donations going to support programming and upkeep of the Museum and Tourist Information Centre.

Riding for Ovarian Cancer Awareness

By Mary Moffat On Wednesday June 5, Joan Thompson, 63, along with her partner and support person, Ken Flagel stopped by the Observer of�ice to share the story behind the Ride for Sheila Rae & You. 6 months ago, Thompson’s sister, Sheila Rae passed away at the tender age of 59 after 3 years, 2 surgeries and chemotherapy to treat her non responsive stage 3 ovarian cancer.

Ovarian Cancer is one of the below the belt cancers, and perhaps because of that, it is a silent killer.

Research into this type of cancer is lagging about 50 years behind that of other cancers and Thompson wants to do everything she can to bring awareness to the need for more research to �ind a screening test to ensure early detection and alternate treatments.

Raising personal awareness and stimulating public action has led to talks in campgrounds and anywhere there is an interested audience.

When asked why a bike ride across Canada, Thompson stated that she loved to ride her bike and after a 30-year hiatus, she decided to get back in the saddle, so to speak, to raise funds for this valuable research. According to Ovarian Cancer Canada, no one has ridden across Canada for this cause, so Thompson undertook a month-long ride through the Pamir Mountains in Central Asia to gear up for the next adventure. After more than two months riding, she can safely say that the Rockies were not nearly the challenge of her previous route. The trip originated in Vancouver, taking advantage of the prevailing winds, and they have followed the Red Coat Trail since Pincher Creek, heading for #2 highway in Manitoba and then along the TransCanada highway for the rest of the trip.

The Williams family owned a hardware store the Wimp Lothian tells me would have been located just north of the Observer building.

After a visit to the Rusty Relic Museum, an overnight stay in the Lions Park Campground and a stop at the Carlyle Bakery for some famous cinnamon buns the

couple were on their way with a simple request - Print the signs of Ovarian cancer and the Facebook link.

Signs of ovarian cancer include bloating; abdominal discomfort; dif�iculty eating and change in urinary habits. Speak to your doctor if you notice new symptoms that persist for three weeks or longer.

Oilmen’s golf tourney

Golf tournament raises funds for Wawota playground

The annual Oilmen’s golf tournament was held at Golf Kenosee on Friday, June 14. Here is just one of the foursomes ready to tee off. By all accounts the tourney was a success and enjoyed by all golfers.

Golf Kenosee was the scene for a golf tournament held on Saturday, June 15.

Funds raised from the tournament will go towards playground equipment for Wawota Daycare.

Around 80 golfers took part in the Wawota Daycare golf tournament and enjoyed a steak supper after golfing.

MM Lions hold clean-up day Submitted On Sunday, June 9 the Moose Mountain Lions Club held their annual Community Clean Up Day where residents gather and pick up garbage around the Village and cottage subdivisions. Lions members also put in the Lions dock on the village lake front.

After the work was done there was a free BBQ at the Kenosee Lake Greenspace for all who helped. During the BBQ, Velda Weatherald on behalf of the White Bear Community Development Corp presented the Moose Mountain Lions Club with a cheque for $7000.

The grant is to be used for the �loors in the new outdoor rink in the Greenspace. It is much appreciated by the Moose Mountain Lions to be able to take another step in completing the project.

Celebrating Indigenous peoples and cultures June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day and a time for all Canadians to honour and celebrate the diverse cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada.

The celebrations taking place across the country are varied. Some communities choose to mark the holiday with barbecues and dancing, others host large events with musical performances and activities for children.

Additionally, some bands choose to hold powwows to commemorate the event, complete with traditional dancing, drumming and food.

National Indigenous Peoples Day events are open to all Canadians who are interested in learning about and celebrating the unique cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Regardless of your ethnicity, on June 21 you’re invited to recognize the important role of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

So how will you celebrate this year?

If you have a summer-themed photo from the region that you feel might just be good enough to ‘WOW!’ email it to us at observer@sasktel.net with the subject line “Summer Times Photo Contest”. Photos should be transmitted via email in their highest resolution. Photos that do not meet resolution requirements will not be considered in the contest.

One winner will be chosen every week, and that photo will grace the front page of the Summer Times newspaper for that week.

In the final issue of the Summer Times, a winner will be chosen from all the weekly winners, and that lucky person will be given a grand prize!

8 steps for getting

PERFECTLY GRILLED BURGERS at home

To wow your guests with perfectly grilled burgers at your next cookout, follow these eight steps.

1. Use medium ground beef instead of lean for a tastier burger. You can also mix different meats like pork or lamb.

2. Season your meat with enough salt and pepper to give it some �lavour. Add other seasonings as desired.

3. Make your patties the same size to ensure they cook within an identical timeframe. Using a kitchen scale or measuring cup will help. A hundred grams (or approximately half a cup) is ideal for creating patties.

4. Flatten the patties before grilling them and use your �inger to make shallow divots in the middles.

This will prevent your burgers from becoming dome shaped.

5. Get a good sear on the outside of your patty by getting the grill very hot before putting the burgers on.

6. Only �lip them once. Rotating, squashing or moving them around will cause your meat to become tough.

7. Cook for three minutes on each side for medium rare (not recommended when using pork), four minutes a side for medium or �ive minutes a side for well-done burgers.

8. Allow your burgers to sit for �ive minutes before eating.

Toast some buns, garnish with your favourite toppings and enjoy!
