Friendly Visiting program comes to Carlyle

By Mary Moffat marymoffat@sasktel.net An introductory meeting of the Friendly Visiting program was held at the Carlyle Public Library on Thursday, June 13. During the Reducing Isolation in Seniors Coalition (RISC) meeting held at the Sustainability Centre earlier this year, Darlene Burnett was intrigued by the Friendly Visiting Program presented by Red Cross Program Co-ordinator, Shawna Green, and organized the informational meeting.

Already a Red Cross Volunteer, Burnett has been active as a part of the Disaster Management team. Megan Russell attended the informational meeting to explain more about her part in the Disaster Management Program. These are the people in red vests that you often see on television, working locally with small scale events involving 50 people or less, supporting them with food, clothing or shelter in the first 72 hours following a fire or flood. Large scale events involving mobilization across the country or even internationally for events such as the Fort MacMurray fires also require many volunteers. Burnett has worked during the flooding in Carnduff, filling out vouchers for food and shelter, signing in people, helping with health issues and with people evacuated to Prince Albert during the fires north of there, as well. Red Cross would ideally like to have two to three trained volunteers in each community and welcomes interested people to consider the many ways you might participate.

Since learning of the Friendly Visitors program, Burnett has been actively recruiting people she feels would enjoy visiting as well as seniors who might benefit and already has a few people on both sides of the program well on their way to being paired up .The program goal is to provide companionship for seniors aged 65+ who feel vulnerable and isolated due to geographical location, physical disabilities or impairments, health issues, lack of close support systems or inability to leave their home. The visits happen one-on-one with the senior either in their home or over the phone. Volunteers are recruited and

Volunteers for phone visits do not necessarily have to live in the same community as their senior, but for those doing face to face visits it may be simpler if the senior is in the same town. All volunteers must apply as a Red Cross Volunteer and successfully complete a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector check in order to qualify. The screening process has been put in place to ensure the volunteers are safe, competent individuals so no one needs to worry about their loved one’s safety. Volunteers do not do any chores, care or other services for their clients, they may simply chat, play a game,

do a craft, discuss news or interests or go on short walks in the community. It is interesting to note that students aged 16-18 are eligible to be a part of the program and while many start because they feel it will look good on their resume when applying for scholarships or for work experience, many find that they have been benefitting in personal growth as well.

Happy Little Hooves Sanctuary

When sisters Rhonda and Laura Stock got their first two donkeys in 2011, they quickly fell in love. While they have full-sized horses on the farm, there was something special about the donkeys and they quickly learned that they also had special needs.

Last year they were given Poker, a miniature Palomino horse, who needed to be rehabilitated because of hoof problems. Poker’s hooves had become overgrown and he could barely walk when he first arrived but is now happily running

and playing. Laura took her vet assistant certification from the Animal Behavioral College and Rhonda is a farrier, so they are uniquely qualified to provide rehabilitation to the littles, as they call their charges.

What began with one miniature horse has now become Happy Little Hooves Pony and Donkey Sanctuary. The sanctuary is located 10 miles west of Estevan, and was officially incorporated January 24, 2019.

horses and what began as a 2-year plan quickly evolved into a two-week plan. They have grown, with 4 ponies, 2 donkeys, a miniature mule and 8 miniature horses calling the sanctuary home. They are a registered non-profit and have been approved

by Animal Protection Services, so when animals are seized or surrendered, Happy Little Hooves becomes their new home.

The first stop for littles with bad hooves is the dry lot. This pen has no green grass, because it is not actually good for the littles. The spring grass and late afternoon grass on a hot day contain very high amounts of natural sugar, which can cause hoof issues if it is a steady part of their diet. The littles require hoof trimming every six to eight weeks. The sugar in a grass diet leads to inflammation of the hoof, and the flare-ups can double the growth, meaning trimming needs to be done every two to three weeks.

Stock explains that flare-ups cause the hoof wall (like our finger nail) to become detached from the coffin bone (like our finger bone). Imagine if your fingernail were to come loose at the tip of your finger, not from the nail bed, but from the actual bone and you had to maintain pressure on the tip of that nail. Because the hoof wall grows so quickly, the weight distribution moves from the heel of the hoof to the front of the hoof, the pain causing their legs to become splayed as they struggle to keep weight of hoof wall. With proper diet, regular hoof trimming, and medication it can take eight months to a

year for the entire hoof capsule to grow out properly.

Stock says that many people don’t understand that donkeys and minis are not just smaller versions of a horse and the lack of knowledge leads to hoof and weight issues and also behavior problems. Like small dogs, littles have attitude, and without discipline can result in biting and kicking. Testosterone levels in mini’s lead to big issues if the animal isn’t gelded, something many people don’t take into consideration.

As you can imagine, with the need for a dry pen, quarantine pen, stud pen (all studs are gelded after surrender), a pregnant mare pen and a large pasture for the healthy animals, providing sanctuary isn’t cheap. There are reasons for Moe’s popularity

By Murray Mandryk Premier Scott Moe’s popularity has likely surprised many.

It is rather amazing that Moe now surpasses the charismatic and popular Brad Wall in popularity while overseeing a Saskatchewan Party government that has accumulated a dozen years of political baggage.

According to the June results of Angus Reid Institute’s quarterly survey of Premiers’ popularity, Moe is the most popular premier in the land with a 65-per-cent per cent approval rating.

That’s four percentage points higher than Alberta United Conservative Party Premier Jason Kenney (61 per cent) who is still riding a wave of popularity after defeating former NDP Premier Rachel Notley.

And it’s 30 percentage points higher than Ontario Progressive Conservative Premier Doug Ford who was elected just last year. This would suggest that Moe isn’t simply riding a wave of conservative popularity across the country.

Moe may have been somewhat helped by how unpopular federal Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in this part of the country.

Clearly, Moe has become the foil to Trudeau and his carbon tax, even more so than Wall was.

Although the latest Angus Reid polling took place about the time of the Sask. Party government’s unsuccessful Court of Appeal decision on the constitutionality of the carbon tax, that’s seems to have done little to detract from Moe’s popularity.

If anything, it added to his popularity, given that the four-cent-a-litre carbon tax also took effect during this period. (By way of information, the Angus Reid poll is an online, volunteer survey of 617 Saskatchewan people said to be scientifically accurate within plus or minus 3.9 per cent 19 times out of 20.)

However, you also get the impression that there’s more going on here than just the fact that Moe is riding a wave of support because he opposes the carbon tax and federal bill C-69 restricting pipeline development.

While Moe may have recently been defined by his battle against Trudeau and a couple federal issues, it would appear Moe’s popularity is rooted in a more solid foundation than that.

In fact, it all might have started during his run for the Sask. Party leadership that took many by surprise.

Moe only received 26.1 per cent of party support on the first ballot and didn’t take the lead until the fourth ballot.

That a majority of his party might have had their initially misgivings of Moe suggests Moe has flown under the radar.

But that more modest, low-key and steady approach in the Moe’s leadership run that eventually captured Sask. Party members may start to explain why he is now captivating more and more Saskatchewan voters a year and a half later.

While not exactly quick with quip or a spellbinding orator (characteristics Saskatchewan usually prefers in a premier), voters also do have a certain affection for big, straight-talking farm boys.

Of course, that applies more to those who agree with what Moe has to say than those who may disagree. The roughly 65- to 75 per cent of rural voters who support the Sask. Party obviously have reason to approve of their leader.

But given that Moe’s overall approval rating in 65 per cent in the Angus Reid survey, simply math suggests at last 50- to 55 per cent of city voters must also approve Moe’s leadership.

Why would a majority of city folks also approve of Moe’s leadership?

Perhaps it’s because most people, rural and urban, are troubled by the carbon tax, too.

Also, a growing province with a strong economy that’s creating jobs likely also helps Moe’s cause.

But most critical to Moe’s success is he has done a pretty good job of not irritating any particular voters many since becoming premier.

That may be the biggest single reason for his popularity.

I love road trips. I get that from my dad. He was up for a road trip anytime…anywhere. When we headed out on vacations he would be sure to stop at points of interest or significant landmarks along the way. I’m sure part of it was to get us out of the car for a while, but the other was the history lesson represented by a marker of some kind.

Shelley Luedtke We’ve shared much laughter in the years since. How far would he drive so we could see a unique rock formation or an unusual waterfall; a solar energy station or a mud hut? We would sometimes leave the beaten path to find curious sights. I am so thankful for that.

It serves as a reminder to stop and see what else is on the way, not just getting to the destination.

How far would you travel to see a hockey tournament? Dinosaur bones? A castle? It’s unique to each of us. What about a book store? My sister told me about one located an hour and a half from where I live she thinks we should check out this summer.

Would you drive more than an hour to see a bookstore?

What if you change the question and ask instead, how far are you willing to walk to see what you want to see? Or, like millions around the world, how far are you willing to walk just to supply a basic need?

Like water.

The average distance people walk for water is 6 kilometers. In some countries it’s a shorter trek, other places much longer, averaging out to 6 km around the globe. Each day more than 200 million hours are spent walking to collect water. Each and every day. Just give that a moment to sink in. An equally sobering thought is that the water collected is often not clean.

There are a lot of people in our part of the world who set a goal of walking 10,000 steps each day. It’s

a great target for health and fitness, and those who hit the mark are likely walking 7 – 8 km. So I set out one evening thinking just about 6 km.

I put on my comfy walking shoes and headed out. I walked on a good surface carrying little more than the device tracking my steps, knowing I was on a safe route and that waiting for me back home was a plenteous supply of fresh water and a tray of ice cubes to quench the thirst I might work up.

My experience bears little resemblance to the 14 million women who head out to collect water for their families. Barefoot, or in some type of sandal, they climb up hills or over rocks, they have an eye out for dangerous creatures, and then when they arrive they fill their container and begin the trek back, but now carrying 20 liters of water. More than once a day.

My dad passed away when I was only 18 years old. I wish I could have had more time with him, learned more from him, and had him as part of my life as an adult. Instead I cherish the love, the lessons, the memories…and yes, the road trips…particularly to those places that at first aren’t easily noticed. The ones where you have to go looking to find what is unique or rare, or to see what was right in front of us that we might otherwise have just driven by and not taken a moment to look at.

Some sights are all too common, but if they are not the ones we want to see, it is easy to act as if they’re not there. If I don’t see them I don’t have to think about the 16,000 children that die every day from hunger-related causes. Or the three billion people who live on less than $2.50/day. Or the women who have to hike to find a source of water to care for their families.

We drove a lot of hours and walked a lot of steps in seeing interesting and fun places. For that I am very grateful. But perhaps it’s a walk to the tap that should give me even greater cause to stop and ask myself how far I’d be willing to walk for this.

That’s my outlook.

Weekly RCMP report No lights, no siren, no radio. They were looking for offenders. We do have an unmarked car, with lights, siren, and all the fixings, and it may have been out as well.

• We did catch approximately 6 seatbelt violators plus other offenders so I think the Members were productive in their efforts to make our roadways safer.

• One Member was referred to as “Young Punk”. The Member may be young, however, they are not worthless. (I looked up the definition of punk). It is expensive to train a Member. They are worth a lot.

• Now, if you are not doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about, however, we all make mistakes and sooner or later we all get a ticket or if lucky a warning.

• There was also a reference to a bad altercation with a Member on Main Street that was not even in uniform.

It was not an altercation per say, more like an interaction and the Member was in uniform, on their way home after completing a full shift.

The Member followed a vehicle that had a young child sitting in the open window with their hands on the roof. This is a dangerous and concerning situation and I am proud the Member took the time to rectify the situation. It did not go as smoothly as we would have liked, however, the Member did their job.

• The allegation was

I am not sure what is inferred by the “Bizarre” but I do know it is actually 3 and 9 where the hands are suppose to be. Thus I can somewhat age the writer being I was also taught 10 and 2. I believe this changed so as if we are in an accident we don’t get punched when the air bag goes off. Regardless, we do think two hands on the steering wheel is safer.

As for mouthwash, please use it. Brush your teeth as well. Make your dentist proud. That said, we are legally permitted to randomly test for sobriety and we do so quite frequently. Glad to hear the Members are doing their job.

• It is alleged that one of us “rear ends” (nicer than the term used) was in disguise in a black sports car. Another individual referred to the vehicle as a ghost car. The Member was not in disguise, just not in uniform. We don’t have a black sports car.

The Member was in our administration vehicle.

the Member was a real “rear end”. Such language. Just remember it takes two to tango.

• The suggestion is to call the Depot and report him. Please call the Detachment Commander or come visit. The individual in question came in the following day and talked to both the Detachment Commander and the Member and we clarified concerns. The individual still obtained the ticket and accepted it with respect and understanding. Good on this individual.

• Now I agree we can be better, do better and wait a minute, last I checked we too are human. Isn’t there something somewhere about “To err is human to forgive is divine?” You expect, and want us to use discretion, and compassion, yet you do not seem to want to provide us the same courtesy.

• As always we dealt with a “Static” 911 call and one false alarm.

• Due to alleged bad memories an individual chose to burn down an abandoned residence.

This residence was not theirs and they were therefore arrested and charged. I guess they now have new bad memories.

• We like to say we have a Legal System, rather than a Justice System. Recently we located an individual wanted out of Alberta, radius Alberta including the Saskatchewan side of Lloydminster. We don’t want him here, they don’t want him back. Unfor-

• Members responded to a domestic where one individual was arrested and charged.

There remains the possibility the other individual may be charged as well.

• A reported domestic was investigated and Members determined the couple just did not get along. This is not criminal, however, often our attendance and efforts result in calming a situation before it becomes criminal.

• One individual ended up spending some time in the hoosgow after getting in a fight and biting someone. They were released the following day with direction to not attend the residence where they apparently got hungry.

• Upon arriving at a residence where it was reported that intoxicated individuals were fighting Members determined it appeared the complainant was the instigator and all the others left which apparently further annoyed the intoxicated complainant.

• An intoxicated youth was causing problems and tried to run from the Police. He was

located and subsequently charged with causing a Disturbance and Obstruction.

• Members assisted in dealing with an individual that had been kicked out of a residence by a landlord and chose to return. This could have easily resulted in charges, however, discretion was utilized.

• A report of loud music resulted in foot

patrols, however, music was no longer being played.

• We assisted both Saskatoon Police Service and Regina Police Service in clearing up some warrants. Both individuals were cooperative and released for a new court date.

Emily excelled and won a gold medal in 50 metre backstroke and 100 metre backstroke. She will move on to the Championships held in Edmonton in July.

• Members stopped a vehicle they found operating in a manner that attracted their attention. We call it “spidey senses” Not that they have been bit by a radioactive spider, or any spider, rather, they just felt something was awry. This resulted in a 72 hour suspension for the driver and an open liquor ticket for the passenger.

• Approximately 35 tickets and 30 warnings were issued over the last week.

• I know we have provided tips before and here we go again. If you are talking on your cell phone while driving a vehicle, don’t go through the stop sign. If you don’t have a valid licence make sure everyone, especially children have a driver’s licence.

Remember those big yellow vehicles called school buses? Stay away from them. One individual drove through the extended stop sign and was ticketed.

The bus drivers are really getting tired of individuals that don’t respect this.

• Tickets were issued for no insurance - $580, owner permit unregistered vehicle to be operated - $140, fail to stop at stop sign - $230, operate a motor vehicle with a passenger under 7 unsecured - $175, passenger fail to wear seatbelt - $175, fail to wear seatbelt - $175, drive without a licence -$150, pass school bus when stop arm extended - $360, cell phone use - $280, create unnecessary noise with a motor vehicle - $100, fail to produce registration certificate - $100, liquor in a vehicle - $360 and most expensive speeding ticket was for $296 and for going over 60 km/hr when passing an emergency vehicle was for $708.

• Warning notices were issued for fail to stop at stop sign, cell phone use, speeding, overcrowding passenger compartment, fail to wear seatbelt, follow too close, fail to produce registration, and unlawfully have auxiliary lamps mounted higher than headlamps.

• Inspection notices were issued for repair, replace or remove black film from brake light covers, mud flaps or fenders, and obtain cover for auxiliary light bar mounted above windshield when operating a vehicle.

• Tip of the week “Leaving your vehicle running with the air conditioning on may cool things down, however, they sure heat up when your vehicle is stolen.

• We attended a fire in Redvers which the volunteer firefighters were able to quickly bring under control. It appears to be accidental in nature.

• An oilfield trailer with a generator set inside was stolen from Redvers. Our investigation continues.

• An individual was caught shoplifting and there were further issues being the proprietors of the establishment took photos. Apologies were made, no charges laid, however, we can’t stop people from videoing, or photographing you. Many establishments have video which prevents crimes and assists in identifying suspects.

• So an individual allegedly owes another individual a substantial amount of money for damaging their crops. The individual that allegedly damaged the crops states the other individual is responsible for them losing three cattle and the other individual also stole hay. Enough said? It is civil.

• An individual reported their child was receiving messages that their sibling was going to get beat up. Upon commencing the investigation it appears the complainant was more concerned with who their child was hanging out with. The child then alleged that they did not want to go with the parent due to discipline issues. Everyone finally agreed as to where the child could stay and our job was done.

• We had a third hand report of an alleged sexual assault, the alleged victim is upset that we found out and is not cooperating. We provided Victim Services and we will follow up later to make sure the alleged victim is OK. • Some families get along, while others do not.

Unfortunately we don’t have the time or resources to spend all day monitoring the division of equipment and property and ensure one individual does not assault another. I am not sure why this is even an expectation, but it is. We know we will be back.

• Spouse says “Dear”, “Dear, “DEEEER” Other spouse says “Stop yelling”, then “THUMP” and second spouse says “Maybe if you called me honey instead of deer I would have reacted sooner?” Other spouse replies “Sorry Dear, I mean Honey” Poor deer, I mean dear, or is it both?

• Several ATVs and motorcycles were allegedly driving around with operators without helmets leaving a trail of beer cans behind. We think we found them but those who were responsible for the vehicles denied operating in such a manner. We are not

Approximately 40 ladies from Wawota travelled to The Boundary Lane Hutterite Colony last Tuesday. They were given a tour and a chicken dinner. This was followed by a question and answer period. I have heard some many positive comments about this venture! It is getting to know different religions, cultures and ways of life that we can live in harmony with all.

Sympathy to Ken and Monique Myers on the passing of her mother, Syliva Fournier of Aylmer, Quebec. She passed away on June 10th at the age of 93 years.

Sympathy to the Van Dresar family and friends on the passing of Doug on June 9 in his 78th year.

Doug was in the navy and was well known as a part owner of the Wawota Garage. He was a hard worker and always ready for visit. He will be missed.

Weather doesn’t dampen spirits for Manor Fire Dept. golf tournament

It was a dull, drizzly day on Saturday, June 15, but that didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of the golfers who came out to support the Manor Fire Department Fundraiser Golf Tournament at the Carlyle Golf Club.

Thirteen teams of four took part in the shotgun start, including a chance to win $5,000 at the 5th Hole.

The Fire Department quickly sold out of hamburgers and hotdogs, as golfers swallowed the BBQ delights,

along with their disappointment at the elusive hole in one. At the end of the day they were welcomed into the warmth of the clubhouse where a roast beef dinner was served and prizes were awarded from the many items donated to this worthy cause. Included in the donations were pies. Raspberry cheesecake pies made by Tori Poirier, an unnamed selection of pies made by the famous “Pieman”, Dennis Feduk, and homemade saskatoon pies and cherry pies made by Lucille Dunn with cherries picked from her own yard. Can you tell Craig Savill was the one passing along the highlights of the donations?

All proceeds from

the golf tournament and fundraiser will go to the purchase of new personal protection equipment for the Manor Fire Department. They have 13 volunteer firefighters and their old equipment is uninsurable, so it is very important that their volunteers are protected both physically and financially as they go out to protect their community.

While Craig Savill and Ray Knockaert checked in the teams, they agreed that the rainy weather was a win/win, because folks still came out to golf and the Fire Department was able to lift the fire ban. It is hoped that this will be the first of many annual golf tournaments for the Department.

There was a decent turnout despite the weather, for the Manor Fire Dept. golf tournament on June 15.

Daryl Harrison to represent Sask. Party in Cannington riding

Daryl Harrison won the contested nomination in Cannington to become the Saskatchewan Party’s candidate in that constituency for the 2020 provincial election.

Harrison, who resides in the Alida area, won a nomination meeting Thursday night at Prairie Place Hall in Arcola.

“It is an honour to stand before you tonight as your Saskatchewan Party nominated candidate for 2020.” Harrison said, “I’ve lived and worked in this constituency my entire life and I’m ready to stand up for and give back to the people of this area.”

Marilyn Simons of Alameda and Winston van Staveren from Creelman were also seeking the nomination.

Harrison has been working in the oil industry for over 30 years in various capacities, including his current role as account manager with Baker Hughes General Electric. In addition, he is a councillor for the local rural municipality, the director for Zone 1 of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers’ Association, a member of the area Lions Club, a volunteer firefighter and a cattle rancher.

Previously he has been a school division trustee for the Souris-Moose Mountain and the South East Cornerstone Public School Divisions.

When asked, Harrison said his motivation for running is to provide a strong voice for rural Saskatchewan and stand up for the oil industry.

“Oil and agriculture are two of the main industries in the southeast corner of this constituency,” Harrison stated, “The Saskatchewan Party government has made it clear that they are in favor of building the necessary pipelines.

Rural Municipality of Reciprocity No. 32 Annual Bursary The R.M. of Reciprocity No. 32 will annually offer a

$2000.00 bursary to eligible students upon the completion of the 1st year of post-secondary education and based on the following criteria: • Parent/legal guardian or applicant is a ratepayer of the R.M. of Reciprocity No. 32 and/or a resident within the boundaries of the R.M. of Reciprocity No. 32, including residents of the Village of Alida.

• Proof of enrollment in the second year of post-secondary studies (University, College, Trade).

• Submission of a one page essay outlining your chosen field of study, your reasons for choosing it, and what impact you hope to make by this choice.

• Submission of a completed application form.

• Two letters of reference, one of which much be from a school official like a teacher, principal, professor, dean, etc.

The application will be available on our website, www.rmofreciprocity.ca, or it can be picked up at the R.M. of Reciprocity No. 32 office located on PT SW 22-05-33-W1M. Application must be returned to the R.M. of Reciprocity No. 32 office on or before June 30, 2019.

The Circle of Friends this week centered on: “I wish I had.” “Gone places” Mary Thiessen wished to see BellaCoola, BC; where her nurse mother met her dad. Several had gone to Alaska, or wished they had.

(One had driven from Northern Saskatchewan).

Then we counted our blessings: Family especially. The biggest one was piano tuner Alex Thiessen from Oak Lake. We were glad to know our piano is still tunable. There is no market for big old pianos.

Roy Bortolotto brought his digital piano and gave a recital of songs from the 1920’s when many of us were born.

Visitors this week included Clinton Houston, Saskatoon, with his sister Janet and Philip Mark, who came for dinner. Other visitors included: Sherry Wilson, Wendy Greenbank, Tracy Niven with Irene Husband; Allan Daku: Sharon Beutler with Joyce Gillies, Roy Swanton with Marie Jensen.

Submitted by Tyson McLaren Club Reporter The club held their demo day on Sunday June 9th, where Heather LeBlanc from Ogema came out and talked about fitting and showmanship.

The whole club really appreciates her coming out and I’m sure we all learnt something new.

The Club will be having their achievement day on June 29 at the Arcola fairgrounds. The show starts at 12:30 pm.

The club is also hosting a free BBQ sponsored by E Bourassa and Sons from 11:30 to 1:00pm. Hope to see you all there.

On Monday, July 1 and Tuesday, July 2 the club will be showing at the regional in Weyburn and then the sale will be on Wednesday July 3 at 2 pm.

We invite all buyers to swing by the stalls and come meet with some of the club members and their animals. Hope to see you there.

Congratulations to Daryl Harrison who became the winning candidate for the Saskatchewan Party in the Souris Cannington constituency on June 13 in Arcola. He will be replacing the former MLA Dan D’Autremont in the 2020 election.

Gray and Edel Cowan spent June 14 in Regina where they had a medical conciliation and then spent some time with son, Jeff before heading back home.

Dale and Holly Anthony spent a few days at Emmerson, MB where they visited with Holly’s sister and also helped her with some repairs around her place.

Alida had a huge surprise awaiting on the morning of June 14 morning when employee arrived at

work – the premises had been broken into sometime during the night/early morning. Needless to say the police were called, premises secured and taped and under investigation. Now my question – “Who would break-in to a post office”? All the valuables are placed into a safe upon closing up for the day, so they must of really known what that they where going to do and come prepared. Oh some people can be something else.

In the evening on Friday, June 14 there were many locals who attended the celebrations at Advantage Co-op in Redvers where they enjoyed good music, dancing and a free hamburger.

There was a bridal shower held on in Alida Hall on Friday, June 14 in honor of Celine Fouilard,

Glen Ewen Mixed 4-H news On June 8, 2019, Glen Ewen Mixed 4-H held the last meeting before Achievement Day. Mariah Warriner – President opened the last meeting and led the Pledge.

Roll Call was led by McKenzie Lovell – Club Secretary.

The children at Arcola Daycare had the pleasure of a visit from Amy Jackson from Living Skies CrossFit Arcola Daycare kids warm up for CrossFit with Amy on June 12. Jackson, who has a huge heart for kids Jackson of Living Skies CrossFit. of all ages, led the “kids’ workout”, teaching them to have fun while getting physical. The skills included burpees, air squats and situps.

The history of the graduation cap Graduation ceremonies are a tradition that dates back to the first high schools and universities. While many aspects of graduation ceremonies have evolved over the years, the graduation cap has remained a hallmark of such ceremonies.

Graduation caps are one of the most visible aspects of graduation dress.

Many scholars believe the mortarboard style cap graduates don was developed from the biretta, a similar-looking Italian hat worn by Roman Catholic clergy. In the 12th and 13th centuries, students and teachers typically wore clerical clothing because the church was highly influential at this time.

Medieval universities helped inspire academic dress, including the familiar graduation cap.

Mortarboards are shaped like a square, perhaps to give them a scholarly appearance like a book or to represent the shape of a quad on the campus of England’s Oxford University, where many graduation dress customs are believed to have originated. Others theorize that the mortarboard, which is named after the flat board used by bricklayers and masons, represents the skill of a master workman.

Many graduation caps were initially black or gray. According to the graduation information site Graduation Source, when color photography became the norm in the 20th century, schools began to use gowns and caps in different shades because they would show up in photographs. Schools often coordinate caps and gowns so their colors reflect their official school colors.

While certain degrees warrant different styles of gown, cowls and hoods, mortarboard caps are relatively standard. In addition to the cap, there is a single button at the top. Tassels hang from these buttons. At com-

mencement, tassels are traditionally worn on the right side of the cap and then moved to the left once graduates receive their diplomas.

Graduation caps are part of the larger scope of academic dress that comprises school traditions. Millions of graduates across the globe will don their caps and toss them into the air later in celebration of their hard work.
