The 7 annual Bobby Vargo Memorial Slo-Pitch Tournament will be held on Saturday, June 29th and Sunday, June 30th at the Kipling sports grounds. th

as the locals and out-of-town visitors begin to �ill the grounds for the fun-�illed day.

The late morning and afternoon attractions have been lined up to keep the whole family entertained. From 11AM through to 3PM, the Royals Sr. Ball Team will be providing a few pitching tips for the Dunk Tank participants while the younger visitors are bouncing about in the bouncy houses. The carnival feel is not complete without the addition of a local petting zoo, face painting and balloon art by Street Culture Project. Visitors can test their accuracy with the new craze of Lumberjax Axe Throwing from 11AM to 2PM. As the day-time events come to a close, the local and visiting teams, their families and event attendees are invited to enjoy the Kipling Curling

Club Supper in the Kipling Arena from 5Pm to 8Pm. As the supper crowd wraps up, event goers will have just enough time to put on their dancing shoes for the Kipling Kid Care Canada Day Cabaret from 9:30PM to 2AM with entertainment by Ecstatic Entertainment.

The Kipling Lions Club food booth will be open to the public throughout the weekend event, the beer gardens will be stocked, countless silent auction prizes will be displayed for auction and the progressive 50/50 draw will be open all weekend (50/50 proceeds will go to the Kipling Skating Club).

By Darcie Khounnoraj The 7th annual Bobby Vargo Memorial Slo-Pitch Tournament is set to entertain families at the Kipling Ball Diamonds on Saturday, June 29th and Sunday, June 30th. The fun-�illed weekend is an annual attraction that invites baseball teams, from all areas of the province and out-of-province, to compete in a friendly slo-pitch competition and families to enjoy the on-site activities during the weekend-long event.

So far, approximately twenty teams are registered to compete in the slo-pitch tournament. Last year 18 teams took part in the memorial slo-pitch tournament, helping to raise money for the community with their $150 team entry fees. Beginning bright and early on Saturday morning, the ball teams will be in the �ield and the bleachers will be full of cheering spectators. Tamara Woroschuk from Blue Chair Massage and Wellness will be on hand to provide massage therapy to keep the players limber and their bodies in tune while they play ball.

On Saturday evening, as the older crowd is quenching their thirst and cheering on their team, the attending youngsters will have the opportunity to visit with Paw Patrol’s special guests Chase and Marshall from 6PM to 7PM. The Nutrien Ag Solutions Home Run Derby event will begin at 7:30PM – will the defending champion, Mike Meszaros, reign once more? Proceeds from the Home Run Derby, combined with the beer gardens pro�its and entry fees will help in funding for ball park improvement projects. Last year, the tournament brought in $22,000 to contribute to community needs and funding.

Sunday morning will start off with a delicious pancake breakfast provided by the Kipling Fire�ighters in the Kipling Arena from 7:30AM to 10:30AM. The players will once again �ill the bases at the ball diamonds

Mmmmm bacon and lots of it!

By Laura Kish Last Saturday the Kipling Community Center was once again the setting for a celebration of all things...BACON. O ve r 2 0 0 p e o p l e came out to enjoy the 18 different ‘Sweet’ and ‘Savory’ dishes containing bacon that were offered up at the nine stations.

So, what is it that draws people to the Great Saskatchewan Bacon Festival?

Theresa Abrahamson from Pelly heard about it on the radio and talked the rest of her gang to head to Kipling to check out the event. “What better way to celebrate a Father’s Day Brunch.”

Sean Duplessis, from New Brunswick and working around Esterhazy, heard about it on the radio and decided to come for the day. “It’s different… it’s awesome!”

Vendors have their own reasons for coming to the Great Saskatchewan Bacon Festival. For example, Louie Dumangas of Vaderstad, a �irst-timer who entered in the Chev Savory category, says “It’s fun! There’s a bit of pressure to do good. My entry (Bacon Wrapped Cauli-

�lower stuffed with bacon spinach pesto) was my own creation.”

Danny Roberts, owner of Big Daddy’s Cookie Jar Bakery in Mary�ield, a �irst-time vendor entered his dish (Sinful Indulgence Bacon Cookies) in the Chef Sweet category. “I came last year to see what it’s all about.” Roberts adds “Nothing was stopping me from coming and nothing was stopping me from entering! It’s an awesome way to spend a Saturday.”

Head Chef Jonathan Sison of The Of�ice Bar & Grill is a Bacon Festival veteran. This was his third time as a vendor because he says “I enjoy the competition and meeting new bacon lovers!” Sison adds “It’s entertaining and innovative to make a dish that’s all about taste and presentation.” Their entries were a Salacious B. Crumb and a Bacon Cotton Candy Lollipop.

Along with the tremendous food, this year’s Great Saskatchewan Bacon Festival also featured tattoos for the kids and entertainment by Eli Barsi and John Cunningham.

And of course, there was the chance to enjoy the afternoon visiting with

friends, neighbors and fellow bacon lovers. Emceeing the event was left in the very capable hands of Trevor Gowen.

He interviewed many of vendors throughout the afternoon and asked the crowd at one point “Have you reached your bacon potential yet?”

“We are grateful for those that worked together to make a successful Bacon Festival 2019,” comments Judy Larson, one of the organizers of the Festival, and adds “We were very pleased with the day.”

Unique ways to celebrate Canada Day inspired by our national icons There are many ways to celebrate Canada Day and �ireworks, community events and backyard barbecues are all commonly enjoyed on July 1. But if you’re looking to do something a little more unique, consider incorporating these national icons into your festivities.

6 things you probably didn’t know were invented in Canada 5. Garbage bags. They may not be glamorous, but it’s hard to imagine a time before plastic disposable bags were readily available. They’ve come a long way since their invention in 1950.

Garbage bags have become more environmentally friendly over the years, with recyclable and biodegradable versions now widely available.

Canadian people and their ideas have made a great impact on the world. These are just six of the many things that were invented right here at home.

1. Peanut butter. Originally invented as a source of protein and calories for people with no teeth, peanut butter was �irst patented in 1884 by a Montreal pharmacist.

6. The Caesar. Invented in Calgary in 1969, the Caesar has been a staple of the Canadian brunch scene ever since. This savoury mix of clam juice, tomato juice and vodka can be garnished with a stalk of celery, a pickled bean or a wedge of lime and is served over 350 million times a year.

The maple leaf While the red leaf on our �lag is that of the sugar maple, there are in fact 10 species of maple that grow across the country. This Canada Day, why not plant one of these trees in your yard? Alternatively, you could simply slather some pancakes with maple syrup and call it Canadian pride. Bonus points if you serve them with Canadian bacon.

Hockey While its exact origins are hotly debated, hockey as we know it today is �irmly rooted in Canadian history and culture. Since your neighbourhood rink is likely closed for the season, consider playing a game of street hockey to work up an appetite for your Canada Day barbecue.

The beaver While a number of animals serve as Canadian symbols, it’s the beaver that’s most recognized as a national icon.

This isn’t surprising given that our country was largely founded on trading beaver pelts. Since you probably won’t see a real beaver on Canada Day, why not indulge in a Beaver Tail pastry instead? This quintessential Canadian treat is a delicious way to celebrate our country.

2. Snowblower. You can thank Montreal’s Arthur Sicard the next time you clear your driveway with a snowblower. He was inspired by agricultural equipment when he invented this back-saving alternative to shovelling.

3. Instant replay. In 1955, Hockey Night in Canada changed forever when a CBC producer used a kinescope to replay parts of an NHL game a few minutes after they occurred.

4. Insulin. This hormone was discovered in 1922 by Canadians Frederick Banting and Charles H. Best. They found that insulin lowered a diabetic dog’s blood glucose to normal levels.

Within a year, they invented a way to purify insulin, and used it to successfully treat a boy suffering from severe diabetes.

The next time you enjoy a PB&J, watch a replay of a great hockey play or take your garbage to the curb, know that you have a fellow Canadian to thank for it.

NIGHT SKIES | JULY AN ASTRONOMY ARTICLE BY JAMES EDGAR

The Moon begins this month one day from new phase, which also happens to be the only total solar eclipse of 2019, beginning in the western South Pacific, cutting across Chile, and ending at Buenos Aires.

Two days later, July 4, sees three thin, waxing crescent lunar events: an occultation of Mars (for us, a close approach); another close approach of Mercury; and the Moon glides through the star �ield of the Beehive Cluster – these are listed as separate events, but all three occur together. On the 13th, Jupiter is a scant 2 degrees south of our satellite. The 16th has another grouping of events: Saturn is occulted for Southern Hemisphere viewers, a very close conjunction for us in the north; Pluto is also occulted, again in the south; and, following 2 weeks after a solar eclipse, of course, a partial lunar eclipse occurs, but this one will only be visible in the Southern Hemisphere. On the 25th, Uranus meets up with the Moon, 5 degrees north.

Mercury is seen only with dif�iculty low in the western horizon early in the month; gradually disappearing as it crosses in front of the Sun. Venus is disappearing into the morning eastern sky, as it rounds in its orbit behind the Sun. It won’t be visible again until September, in the western evening sky.

Mars is nearing superior conjunction, when it passes behind the Sun in early September. Catch a �leeting glimpse of it now while you can, like on the 4th, mentioned above.

Jupiter dominates the southern sky all through the summer. It’s high in the sky as twilight darkens into night, almost straight south at midnight, among the stars of western Sagittarius. This is a good time to use binoculars or a telescope to see the Galilean moons, which move rapidly, changing position each evening. These objects, all but one larger than our Moon, were �irst seen by Galileo in 1610, thus bearing his name. The two inner moons orbit very quickly, with periods of 1.7 and 3.5 days, respectively. Compare those orbital times with our Moon that takes 27.3 days to get around the Earth once. Watch for the nearby Moon in the 13th.

Saturn rises in the east in eastern Sagittarius, crossing the sky all night and bracketing The Archer with its partner gas-giant planet, Jupiter. The Moon is nearby on July 16. Saturn will be positioned well throughout the month and the rest of the summer.

Uranus is �leetingly visible in the morning sky, just before sunup.

No ice cream maker? No problem! Making this delicious frosted dessert requires no special equipment.

Start to �inish: 4.5 hours (20 minutes active) Servings: 10

Ingredients • 1-1/2 cups fresh raspberries • 1/4 cup sugar • 1 tablespoon cornstarch • 250 grams cream cheese, softened • 2/3 cup sweetened condensed milk • 1-1/2 cup heavy cream • 1-1/2 tablespoon

vanilla extract

Directions 1. In a pot, combine raspberries and sugar and cook over low heat until the raspberries release their juice.

2. Add cornstarch and continue to simmer for another 2 minutes, or until the mixture has thickened.

3. Using a stand mixer, beat the cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Add the sweetened condensed milk, cream and vanilla extract slowly. Continue to mix until the ingredients are well combined.

4. Pour about one-

third of the cream mixture into a bread pan and top with half the raspberry mixture. Repeat with the remaining cream and berries, ending with a layer of cream. With a butter knife, distribute raspberry mixture using circular motions to create swirls.

5. Cover with aluminum foil and freeze for at least 4 hours. Remove from freezer 20 minutes before serving.

Try substituting blueberries, blackberries or strawberries for the raspberries, or use store bought jam to make this recipe even easier.

Kennedy hosts 4th Annual Round Up Rodeo

By Darcie Khounnoraj Rodeo action began in the early morning hours as contestants prepared for the 4th Annual Round Up Rodeo in Kennedy on Sunday, June 9. Contestants of all ages were highlighted at the rodeo event throughout the day to present their showmanship and skill with the animals in the arena.

Impressive Pole Bending presentations opened the event at 9 AM with thirty-�ive contestants in the draw.

The horses were careful and quick as they completed the pole bending pattern, consisting of six poles. The top ten contestants went on to present their pattern in the afternoon session.

The Green as Grass event welcomed �ive contestants to share their new skills in barrel racing. The Pee Wee Barrel Racing was next in line for the thirty contestants, 9 and under, during the morning events. The youngsters impressed the spectators in the stands and the upcoming competitors waiting in the sidelines.

Twenty-�ive Youth Barrel contestants, 15 and under, performed their quick and steady skills in the arena with their beautiful horses.

The top �ive later competed for top score in the afternoon events.

Twenty-�ive Open Barrel contestants sped through the arena on their steeds taking tight turns around the barrels as they completed their performance. The top �ive went on to compete in the afternoon events to take home top score.

The Round Up Rodeo’s afternoon events started with speed and precision during the Open Breakaway Roping event. Thirteen riders quickly roped the calves as the gates �lew open, earning points for their participation and expertise.

Seven teams of three, ages 8 to 14, entertained the crowd with their strength and smarts as they worked together to ride the spunky ponies released from the chute during the Wild Pony Race. The little ponies made the young competitors work hard to earn their points, but the champs never gave up!

The rodeo events sped up again as the Youth Breakaway Roping competitors took over the arena stage. Twelve contestants, 15 and under, impressed the attendees with their quick roping action as they stopped the calves in their tracks.

Nineteen youngsters brought the crowd to smiles and sometimes laughter as the little riders achieved success in Goat Tying. The young competitors were deter-

mined to tie the goats, even If it meant chasing them down to do so. The goats continued to entertain the crowd, after the Pole Bending event, as thirty young contestants, 10 and under, competed in Goat Undecorating.

Speeding into the next events, twenty teams competed in the Team Roping portion of the rodeo. Just a few teams managed to complete the task, however, the teamwork was admirable.

Twelve teams, 7 and under, competed in the Sheep Riding event following a short intermission. The crowd of competitors seemed to enjoy corralling the sheep as the event came to an end, providing laughter as they did so.

The rodeo events came to an end with the high energy Steer Riding event. The six contestants, ages 8 to 14, held on strong to the bucking steers, some hanging on tight as the steer took them for a ride across the arena.

The family orientated rodeo event welcomed family teams to compete in various rodeo events, keeping the costs low and affordable for the contestants. The pay-out for prizes were 100% and the grand prize winners received a beautiful belt buckle following the day full events.
