Bears are coming out of the woods!

By Mary Moffat Hey, Boo Boo? What have you got in that pica-nic basket? While that may bring back fond memories of Yogi the Bear in the cartoons we all grew up with or watched with our children, picnic baskets were not the food of choice for local bears in recent weeks. Brian Meyers of Kenosee Lake

was the �irst to report a bear sighting and take photographs of a black bear snacking on the bird and squirrel feeders in their yard, during the wee hours of May 16, 2019. This was quickly followed by the sighting of a black bear in the early evening of May 18 on Okadoca St in the village of Kenosee.

While Conservation Of�icers attended, the fate of the bear has not been con�irmed at the time this paper went to press.

On May 22, Jack Toothill was watching the evening news when he spotted a bear wandering about the front yard of his cottage at Cannington Lake.

He quickly snapped some pictures and called the conservation of�icers to report the visitor. There is no doubt that this bear is not the same one spotted in Kenosee, given that it is a cinnamon colour, but it did to share the same taste for bird seed.

According to Toothill the bear has since been captured and transported to a less populated area.

There appears to be no doubt that there are bears in them thar hills, as yet another was spotted ln the ditch along the highway near White Bear Lake Resort Tuesday, before turning back into the woods. It would appear that either there is an abundance of wildlife this year, or people are just paying more attention, but either way, be careful out there as the warm weather brings out more than just people to enjoy the great outdoors.

Everyone benefits from a Second Chance

By Mary Moffat A stone home built in 1901 housed a family until the 1970’s, and then raccoons, bats and other critters made their way into its walls. The lathe and plaster were falling in, there was water in the basement and it smelled so bad, yet even this broken down, damaged and almost worthless property held a hidden purpose.

Donated to Choose Life Ministries, Shelley Boyes believed the 160acre property near Gainsborough had plenty of room to build another home, but the board and God disagreed with her.

The house was gutted right back to the stone walls and volunteers were thrilled to discover that the rafters and beams were built from cedar and were in excellent shape.

The ceiling was raised, plumbing and electrical installed, donated Bibles were placed inside the walls and scriptures were written on the beams and 2 x 4’s and door posts.

This building is now the Homestead for Hope, which offers a six month residential program for women 18 to 29 years

of age. The Christian 12-step program teaches life skills, �itness and nutrition and boundaries to women who are seeking freedom from life controlling issues such as drug and alcohol abuse, depression, eating disorders, unplanned pregnancy, physical and sexual abuse and self-harm.

The Homestead of Hope was born from a tragedy in the Boyes family. In 2006 their oldest daughter died in a rollover on May Long weekend. Their two younger daughters spiraled out of control after their sister’s death, seeking solace in drugs and alcohol.

Fearing the loss of one or both of the girls, Shelley searched for help, dragging them kicking and screaming into rehab.

They offered a clinical two-week or 30-day �ix, but didn’t deal with the heart issues, and no lasting changes occurred.

After �inding a ministry in the United States that was offering what she was seeking for her girls, Boyes founded Choose Life Ministry and chose similar programming to develop the Homestead

for Hope.

To help fund the ministry, Boyes opened Second Chance, which has grown into three thrift stores, located in Carlyle, Estevan and Fort Qu’Appelle. It is estimated that they cycle 200 to 300 items of clothing, household and jewelry per day through each store. Each store employs a full-time manager and 2 to 3 part time staff, along with many volunteers. They sort and display items donated to the store using six different colored tags. Every week a different colored tag goes on sale at half price and then any remaining items are pulled off the racks and donated to Community Living or the Canadian Diabetes Association, ensuring the stock remains fresh and new. The �lamboyance of Flamingos that have been found in yards around Carlyle, Redvers and Manor are a part of the fundraising efforts for Homestead for Hope as well.

It truly does appear that everything and everyone bene�its from a Second Chance!

Millions of people hit the links to play golf recreationally, and many young stars of the game are inspiring others to try their hand at this dif�icult sport.

In its “U.S. Golf Economy Report,” released in 2018, WE ARE GOLF, a coalition of golf’s governing bodies, found there was a 20 percent increase in junior golf participation in the �ive years between 2011 and 2016. Plus, there were 2.5 million golfers who played for the �irst time in 2016, up from 1.5 million in 2011. Even more exciting for the industry is non-golfers interested in playing golf doubled to 12.8 million.

There has never been a better time to play golf. However, to the uninitiated, golf can be complicated. There are many different rules and all sorts of equipment to learn and lingo to follow. In fact, the experts at Golf Digest say that some people can be scared off even before they hit the green. Fortunately, all it takes is a little research to get started on learning about and ultimately embracing the game of golf.

Here are six ways to get started.

1. Start off on a practice range and not on the golf course. The range is a great place to acclimate oneself to the game and practice your swings.

2. Hook up with someone who can show you the ropes. Going it alone can tame feelings of embarrassment from being new to the game. However, having someone in your corner guiding you can make it easier to learn and love the game. Work with a local golf pro or enlist the help of a friend or family member with some gol�ing experience.

3. Learn all you can about the clubs, including which kinds are used for various types of shots. While a golfer is allowed to carry as many as 14 clubs in a bag, you will not need that many when �irst starting out, nor do you have to invest thousands of dollars in a set of clubs. It’s possible to �ind used clubs online if you want to try the sport before committing.

4. Lean toward more loft when selecting clubs. Look for drivers that have at least 10 degrees of loft and fairway woods that start at 17 degrees, offers Golf Digest. This will make it easier for beginners to get the ball into the air and can reduce sidespin so shots �ly more straight.

5. Pay attention to short shots as well as the long ones. Spend as much time practicing with wedges and the putter as the driver to really tighten up all of your shots.

6. Learn the proper grip and stance by working with a coach. Invest in a glove to avoid callused hands, as you’ll be spending signi�icant time practicing.

With these tips, novice golfers can get on the road to developing a great golf game relatively quickly.

Celebrating Brian Orsted

Family and friends gathered at the Moosehead in the Village of Kenosee on Sunday, May 26 to celebrate the 60th birthday of the late Brian Orsted.

Brian passed away unexpectedly in Mazatlan, Mexico on Feb. 15, 2019.

The Moosehead was a fitting venue for the occasion as Brian had been the general manager there for 20+ years. Brian played drums in his earlier years with a band named “Bordertown” and a few of the original members reunited and played at the celebration. Before his Moosehead days, Brian was a recording engineer, recording for the Johner Brothers first album, “Some Kind of Magic”. From January 1987 until April 1991 Brian was employed at the Studio West Canada, Ltd. Recording Studio in Saskatoon.

Not only did he record and mix music for C.D.’s and cassette tape releases, he mixed radio and television jingles. He also taught recording engineering in the Studio West Recording Arts Program. One of his proudest projects was recording and mixing of “The Northern Pikes - Snow in June” debut album which included “She Ain’t Pretty”. He proudly hung his platinum record in his office. Most of the day and evening were spent reminiscing through tears and laughter, the life of Brian Orsted, who is greatly missed and remembered fondly.

Spring rolls Let everyone in the family make their own fresh spring rolls. Simply assemble the ingredients you want to use including rice paper wrappers, vermicelli rice noodles, julienne style veggies and your choice of protein, then combine them to make your rolls.

If you �ind rice paper wrappers hard to work with, substitute them with lettuce leaves. Use a premade sweet chili sauce for dipping, or try your hand at a peanut sauce using natural peanut butter, soy sauce and garlic.

On hot summer days, the idea of turning on the stove or oven can be unpleasant. Here are a few meal ideas for times it’s too hot to cook.

Gazpacho There are many variations of this cold Spanish soup, but most include cucumber, tomato, bell pepper and garlic. To make your own, combine your choice of vegetables in the blender and season with some salt, pepper, a splash of red wine vinegar and olive oil. Top with toasted croutons for an authentic, traditional touch.

Salad There are almost in�inite ways to make a delicious salad, so let your imagination guide you. Start with a base of leafy greens, potatoes or pasta. Add seasonal

Crescent Point Leisure Complex staff members have been working tirelessly getting the pool ready for the upcoming season. It’s scheduled to open June 12 for school swims and open to the public on June 27. Swim lessons begin June 17 and all classes are full. Renae Fafard is returning as Manager.

Renae has been employed by the Leisure Complex for eight seasons, four of those as Manager. Brent Stillwell is once again the “maintenance guy”.

There are nine others on staff. The community and surrounding area are looking forward to another enjoyable pool season.
