The scoop on the poop

In today’s feature, I am going to really change things up and if you are reading this at the supper table, I suggest you put the paper down until after you have digested your meal.

Today’s theme is “The Scoop on Poop.”

The reason I picked this topic is because my wife and I like to take our kids on hikes in our great provincial parks and we are always �inding some sort of animal scat. Being a conservation of�icer, my kids think that I am the Professor of Poo, and they love to quiz me on everything they �ind from actual scat to

a chunk of rock or even a Pepsi can.

I dazzle them with my brilliance and I am sure that my wife has a migraine from the number of times she has rolled her eyes back in her head after listening to me describe in detail these turd tidbits. My grade 12 English teacher would be so proud to learn that I have put forth a literary gem like this.

All vertebrates, including �ish and wildlife, have the urge to go number two. When out in the wild, we often see various sizes and shapes of dung that come from different animals. In this feature, I will try and describe the shapes and sizes of scat from different Western Canadian wildlife, as well as provide a few neat facts about animal dung that you may not know.

We all know that different animals have different diets. Some are herbivores (plants only),

some are carnivores (meat only), and some are omnivores (plants and meat). Depending on what the animal eats, you will see that by-product in the animal’s stool.

As with humans, once the animal has eaten and fully digested its meal, the digestive system removes and absorbs any nutrients that are required. Then, the remaining material is expelled from its body as waste. Though scat is lower in energy than its original form (when it was food), the feces may still contain a large amount of energy.

As a result of the animal passing on food energy as dung, it is readily consumed by the decomposers within the ecosystem.

With the wide variety of wildlife that we have in Saskatchewan, you can appreciate the various sizes and shapes of the dropped dung. Most of the droppings have a shape to them which will

help identify what species produced it. The perfect poop, if there is such a thing, is about 75 per cent water. The remaining 25 per cent is comprised in pretty much equal amounts of �iber, bacteria, protein, fat, and mucous from the lining of the intestines.

There are a variety of shapes to animal poop, which can help you identify what may have stopped at that particular location for a minute.

Contents and size of dung can also be used as an identifying characteristic.

The size of the scat should correspond to the size of the animal that left it there. Cattle and buffalo normally pass a plop or a pie. These are normally �lat and actually plop and splat when they hit the ground.

Smooth round scat the size of marbles is often left by rabbits. Small tubular scat, depending on size, could have been left by an animal ranging from a mouse to a squirrel. The larger tubular-shaped scat that is rounded at one end and tapered at the other end probably would have come from a member of the cat family.

Bears are hard to characterize because its dung shape relates greatly to what it has eaten.

Bird poop does not really have a shape to it.

It is something that we really do not pay attention to until one of them decides to open the bomb bay doors and drop its waste on your newly washed truck. Birds do not urinate like mammals. Their kidneys extract wastes from the bloodstream in the form of uric acid, unlike humans and animals that will remove urea in the form of urine.

The bird’s uric output combines with material digested from the intestines and is deposited on the hood of your new Chevy. Birds have a cloaca, which is a multipurpose organ in birds used to get rid of waste, lay eggs, and is also used for reproduction. This same biology is true for reptiles and amphibians.

• In many species of wildlife, seeds are often found in scat. Once the animal has digested the useful product of a berry, they pass the seeds, dispersing them onto the ground where they will start to grow.

• Larger groups of animal or packs will often use their feces to mark an area, telling other animals of the same species to take a hike and �ind a new territory.

• Some animals eat their young’s droppings to prevent predators from �inding them.

• The turkey vulture often defecates on its own legs, using the evaporation of the water in the feces and/or urine to cool itself.

• The colour of poop is often determined by the animal’s diet. If a blue whale eats lots of shrimp, then expect the poop to be pink. If a black bear gets into the blueberries, then the poop will be blue.

• Rabbits can produce up to 300 poop pellets a day.

Tips for choosing the right golf bag

Golf bags come in a wide range of models, just like golf clubs. Weight, handling and storage compartments are the main criteria to consider when shopping for a bag. But above all, your choice depends on what type of golfer you are.

If you play most of your games on foot, you have two possible choices.

For golfers who prefer to carry their equipment on their backs, a bag with or without a tripod stand has the advantage of being lightweight and compact.

However, the number of compartments is limited, and you should always check the sturdiness of the

Fun, fundraising and fishing Submitted Alameda’s 22nd Annual Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, June 30! Mark your calendars and come join the festivities of this family-oriented day. The annual �ishing derby is a key fundraising event of the Alameda Community Rink. It’s fast becoming one of the biggest derbies in Saskatchewan.

In the past, there have been over 300 entries. There is an adult division paying out $5,000 in prize money. The youth division includes any �isherman twelve years and younger. This division has six different money winners. As well, youth get to pick a prize!

The day starts at 6 a.m. rain or shine at the Alameda Dam with a pancake breakfast at the Moose Creek Golf Course Clubhouse. Fishing commences at 8 a.m. from land or water. Fishing from shore is absolutely permitted. If you are not an early riser, bring the family out for an after-

noon of fun and relaxation.

Northern Pike is the species of �ish everyone’s angling for. Any �ish brought to the of�icial scale will be weighed by our weighmaster on the commercial digital scale and then released. No �ish will be weighed after 4 p.m.

There have been fewer �ish weighed the last few years as most of the �ishermen have cellphones on the water and know the required weight a �ish must be to qualify for prize money.

With each year, the weighing and releasing of the �ish is being improved to aid the well being and conservation of the �ish.

Hooray! We’re off to the beach!

Soaring temperatures, sunny skies and a gentle breeze... Now’s the time to gather up the family or call your friends, because it’s a perfect day for a trip to the beach. Don’t forget your checklist: parasol, picnic, bathing suits, beach towels, sunscreen, sunglasses and �lip �lops. Ready to go?

The joys of the beach You love lazing in the sun, or in the shade of an umbrella (because the sun always makes you look like a lobster despite all the sunscreen in the world)? Is it your ultimate summer pleasure to work on your tan, relax with a good book or listen to some music? And what about the pleasures of sitting and chatting while you watch the kids wade and splash in the water?

Are you the type that can never sit still? There are endless possibilities for stretching your legs: you’re sure to have a great time playing a game of beach volleyball or Frisbee. ATV trails open June 15 The season for riding your ATV in Moose Mountain Provincial Park is June 15 – Labour Day! If you are planning to head out to Moose Mountain to ATV this season, please note: ATVs are to be washed prior to entering the park to avoid the spread of invasive species or noxious weeds and trailered to the unloading area west of the Kenosee Lake Riding Academy.

The designated trails are along Centre Road to the Bennett and Horse Lakes Trails (only).

These are the only allowable ATV trails.

Each ATV must display an ATV trail permit available at no charge from the campground of�ice.

Helmets must be worn while riding; boots, long pants and sleeves and eye protection are recommended.

You must have a valid driver’s license to operate an ATV and have third party liability insurance to ride on

Make the most of your BBQ Grilling mouth-watering meals on the barbeque is one of summer’s most enjoyable pleasures. It’s also a responsibility that should not be taken lightly. Here are a few safety tips to help you make the most of the joys of outdoor cooking.

First use Before lighting the barbecue for the �irst time after a long period of disuse or after �illing the propane tank, apply a solution of soapy water to the connections and hoses. Tiny air bubbles indicate leaks; if any appear, the connection must be tightened and any defective parts replaced.

Lighting procedure 1. Open the cover of your barbecue.

2. Make sure that the burner control knobs are set to “off”.

3. Open the propane cylinder valve slowly to the maximum.

4. Push the built-in starter button or insert a match or �lexible lighter into the opening at the bottom of the �irebox. If there is no opening, use a long match held close to the burner to be lit.

5. Slowly open one of the burner knobs to the “on” position.

6. If the barbecue doesn’t light with the �irst try, leave it to ventilate completely according to manufacturer’s instructions before trying again.

After use When shutting the grill down, it’s a good idea to close the propane cylinder valve �irst to ensure there is no gas left in the hoses. Once the �lame is extinguished, turn the burner grill knobs to the “off” position. That way, your grill will be all ready for your next meal.

Positioning your BBQ Be sure to put your barbecue in a stable and well ventilated spot. Don’t leave electrical wires lying around nearby, and don’t put it too close to walls, trees, or shrubs. Once lit, never leave your barbecue unattended, and never move it when it is lit.

Regular maintenance • Examine the state of the burners. If they are full of holes, have them checked by your retailer. If they are in a good state of repair, clean them gently with a wire brush.

• Clean the inside of the �irebox with an oven cleaner or a barbecue degreaser.

• Ensure that the burner grill knobs and the propane cylinder valve are working properly.

• Turn the lava rocks a few times over the summer.

A single layer of rocks is suf�icient for your barbecue to work ef�iciently.

• Soak the cooking grills in hot, soapy water after every use.

• Defective propane cylinders or those that are more than 10 years old should be returned to the propane supplier to be replaced. Never throw a cylinder in the garbage.

• During the transportation or storage of a propane cylinder, place the protective dust cap cover on the cylinder’s valve. The cap protects threads from damage and contaminants.

Propane is colourless and odourless. An odorant is added to propane for consumer safety; a propane leak smells like rotten eggs or boiled cabbage.
