A bike for Jayla

Mary Moffat marymoffat@sasktel.net Jayla, daughter of Travis and Amy Singleton, spends a lot of time at the rink, but on Friday, May 31 she was surprised and excited to see all her friends and the bouncers instead of a hockey game.

However, the biggest surprise was yet to come.

The look on Jayla’s face was priceless, as she held her hands to her face, while Shawna Cudmore rolled out the lime green bike, complete with a purple helmet and festooned with helium-filled balloons. With a wide smile, she climbed on the bike and was quickly riding around the rink as her family and friends watched, many with tears in their eyes.

You may wonder why is this bike such a big deal. Jayla, 13, was born with 1P36 Micro Deletion Syndrome and her disability makes riding a regular bike difficult. Jayla rode a bike for a period of time last year, provided by Wascana Rehabilitation Centre, but it was needed by others throughout the province. Shawna Cudmore, a playschool teacher in Wawota, shared how much she enjoyed watching Jayla on the bike last year and decided to see if she could start fundraising for a permanent solution.

She approached community groups and with the help of Wawota Lions ($1,000), Kenosee Lions ($250), Mountney Ladies ($200), OneChurch.ca (donating bouncers and food), Jayla’s grade 6 class bake sale ($689.05) and the supper Friday night ($1,472.75). They were able to cover the cost of the bike and have a little left over.

With the help of Wascana, PH Mobility and KNR courier, Cudmore ordered the bike and arranged to have it at the rink in time for the fundraiser Friday night. Kyla West, Jennifer Greenbank, Brandy Russill, Jenn Prince, Tami Dovell, Barb Swanson and Trevor Latham all helped with the supper, as well. The leftover funds will be put towards attending a 1P36 Micro Deletion conference in the United States.

Cudmore said the best part of the night for her was when the rink was empty and Jayla asked if she could ride the bike again. She had the whole rink to herself and her friends were in the stands cheering her on while she made lap after lap with the biggest smile on her face.OneChurch.ca at the Bike for Jayla Fundraiser.

KLKP Variety Night a success Mary Moffat marymoffat@sasktel.net Friday night, May 31, the Carlyle Memorial Theatre played host to the Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party Variety Show. The show was a fundraiser to help cover the wages of camp counsellors so working parents can send their children to camp to receive top quality music instruction. The evening featured guitar students Victoria Anderson, Kaleb Maxie, Tao Sedor, Morgan Bayliss (with Jillian Bayliss on the fiddle), Raine Lafiguera, Fin Eckersley and Jesse Macfarlane.

Following them were performance by Micah and Aaliyah, Donna and Morgan, Clare from Delisle, SK playing jigs and a dance by SASHA. After intermission and a chance to bid on silent auction items, Focal Point took the stage with both a vocal and a fiddle number. Jacquie Walbaum performed next followed by fiddle students Shayda King, Parker Stinson, Aurora and Natasha McMillan, Jillian Bayliss and Shasta Lemieux with Adrianna Junk on guitar. Simone Boutin shared a vocal number and the finale featured a reel set.

Trudeau aims north to pull out Sask. seat

By Murray Mandryk Can you imagine the federal Liberals emerging from this fall’s national election with more seats in Saskatchewan than they already have?

Admittedly, it takes a fair bit of imagination. And it will take more than a little luck on the Liberals’ part.

But it is possible … even though it’s likely a difficult to see from the vantage of rural Saskatchewan.

If you live anywhere in this province, you have had a pretty steady diet of frustrations with the federal Liberal government.

It started long-before the boisterous opposition from Premier Scott Moe and federal Opposition leader Andrew Scheer to the carbon tax imposed on April 1.

And it certainly won’t end until the federal ballots are in box this October.

One gets that there are elements of this debate driven by politics, the notion that no one likes paying more taxes for anything.

But what we can’t forget that we are a resourcebased economy, dependent on oil, gas, mining and, of course, agriculture. All of these things are large-scale greenhouse gas emitters. Our electrical needs are currently powered by burning coal.

For however much politics there has been in the opposition to the carbon tax, there is no doubt that it does disproportionally hammer a large GHG emitter like Saskatchewan.

Add in other problems like the inability to sell canola into China, arguably, a problem not of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, but one that the Liberals are struggling to solve _ and there’s more reason not to vote Liberal than there was four years ago.

And let us remember that Saskatchewan voters weren’t exactly eager to vote Liberal in 2015. Ralph Goodale in Regina Wascana was the Liberals only success.

Given the anger over both Trudeau and his government policies that we now see, there is no guarantee that even Goodale is safe this time.

But that Goodale has held on to a Saskatchewan seat nearly for three decades now reminds us that Saskatchewan voters are never completely uniform in their views.

And not all Saskatchewan voters share the same level of disdain for the current federal administration.

This is something that Trudeau and his strategists obviously recognized prior to the Prime Minister’s trip to Saskatchewan late last month to exonerate the Cree leader Chief Poundmaker.

It wasn’t so much this ceremony in which Trudeau declared: “The Government of Canada recognizes that Chief Poundmaker was not a criminal, but someone who worked tirelessly to ensure the survival of his people.”

This did seem to be about righting a historical wrong.

Moreover, this is the Battlefords-Lloydminster federal riding that has been conservative for 30 years.

But after Trudeau left the Poundmaker ceremony, he headed to the spring assembly of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) at the Flying Dust First Nation north of Meadow Lake. Then it was off to a Liberal fundraiser in Meadow Lake for star Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River candidate Tammy Cook-Searson.

Clearly, Trudeau and the Liberals have identified a political opportunity in Saskatchewan that others might have overlooked.

Of course, there’s still the problem of Trudeau’s relationship with First Nations people that has been scarred by unfulfilled promises and the whole Jody Wilson-Raybould affair.

And it won’t make all that much difference to Saskatchewan’s representation in Ottawa that will still be dominated by a heavy Conservative presence.

But in what could be a very close election in which every seat may count, one can’t overlook a seat like Desnethe-Missinippi-Churchill River.

Nor should we forget that there still is a diversity of views in this province, even when what you mostly hear sounds like unanimity.

As we found out in 2015 when Trudeau came from third place to win, elections can be unpredictable affairs.

Just a handful of coins We know the procedure at airport security: grab a bin, take out our laptops and iPads, empty our pockets, send the bin down the conveyor belt and then retrieve our stuff at the other end. Amidst the frenzy of activity it’s easy to walk away without retrieving everything.

The most common item left behind? Loose change. As reportShelley Luedtke ed last week by the TSA, close to $1 million in loose change didn’t make it back into the pockets of travelers at major American airports. Those pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters can really add up. Yet the way we sometimes speak of coins denotes a certain dismissal: spare change. Not needed. Superfluous.

It’s been seven years since we stopped minting the penny in Canada. The decision was celebrated by many but I think my Uncle Joe was probably the happiest person at the time. He did not like pennies at all. For years he tossed them into big milk jars and carried them to the basement feeling he was doing his part in ridding the economy of what he felt was a nuisance. Uncle Joe died a couple of years ago and I can only imagine the task it was for my cousins to deal with all the pennies. I am curious to know what the grand total might have been for his years of penny hoarding.

Savings initiatives like the Penny Challenge certainly point to how effective a little bit of seemingly nothing can grow into a great big deal of something. The idea is to put one penny into a jar the first day, then on day 2 put in two pennies and so on for 365 days. At the end of the year you will have more than $660 in your hands. Trying the same thing in Canada but using the nickel instead could result in an extra $3,395. Not bad for something most Canadians no longer pick up off the sidewalk.

done with consistency. Those who have been successful say they don’t even miss the money--just like travelers who leave forgotten coins behind at security.

A bride shared a story of an unusual wedding gift from her aunt and uncle. On the day she announced her engagement they started saving dimes--just dimes--and put them into a pretty bottle. Those dimes, which would have gone mostly unnoticed over the course of the year, yielded $200 which was gifted to the couple on their wedding day. The bride commented not only on how unique it was but also that it started a practice for the newlyweds who continued to stash away coins to be used for special purposes; which is of course the next part of the equation--what to do with those coins that can now represent a significant amount of money.

There’s a lot that can be done with coins that get saved up. They can be put toward a vacation upgrade or added to a mortgage payment. Perhaps be the push for a splurge purchase. More responsibly of course, they could be put toward household debt which Canadians carry in the billions. Yes, billions.

There’s another option too. Despite our reliance on debit and credit cards, more than half of retail transactions in Canada are done using cash. That means there are a lot of coins floating around. Consider what could be done if we each selected one type of coin to set aside for a year.

Just one. At the end of the year there may not be much there--but then again--we might be surprised. We could take those earmarked dimes or quarters, or even loonies and toonies, and choose a charity we may have never given a gift to before.

Not spare change any longer, but major change for someone, somewhere. On their own the coins might not seem to be worth a whole lot, but throw in a handful of others, and with mine alongside yours, well…the potential is priceless. That’s my outlook.

HEALTH HUB Warning signs of Lyme disease: what to watch out for during tick season

Lyme disease is an inflammatory illness caused by bacteria transmitted via black-legged ticks (more commonly known as deer ticks).

Lyme disease can last for years and lead to arthritis and neurological and cardiac disorders.

An early sign of Lyme disease is a circular rash (Erythema migrans) that appears three to 30 days after getting a tick bite. It’s usually not itchy or painful but may feel warm to the touch.

Other early symptoms of Lyme disease include fever, body aches, headaches and swollen lymph nodes. Later symptoms may include severe

joint pain, heart palpitations, short-term memory loss and other cognitive problems or facial paralysis.

To guard against Lyme disease, make sure to take precautions when in grassy or heavily-wooded areas, including: • Wearing long sleeves, closed-toe shoes and long pants tucked into your socks.

• Using insect repellents with a DEET concentration of 20 per cent or higher.

• Checking your clothing, skin and pets carefully for ticks.

• Removing ticks as soon as possible using tweezers, making sure to remove the

insect’s entire body. Bacteria usually enters your bloodstream after the tick has been attached to your body for 36 to 48 hours.

If you notice symptoms of Lyme disease after a tick bite, contact your doctor. Treatments for Lyme disease are more effective when they’re given earlier rather than later.

Lyme disease is named after the town of Lyme, Connecticut, where an outbreak occurred in the early 1970s. Scientists studying the outbreak eventually discovered that the disease was caused by infected tick bites.

Weekly RCMP report Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons • 911 is for an emergency. Now we hate to get technical, however, just because an individual thinks it is an emergency does not mean it is an emergency. In addition, as amazing as we think we are, Police don’t do everything, well I guess we do, however, the results may not be what you expect.

• Where am I going with this? Well if you call 911 because you locked your keys in your vehicle and you want the RCMP to open it. Well, we are not locksmiths, but we could break a window. OK, we would not do that unless it was an emergency, such as infant is locked in the vehicle and it is too hot.

• OK, the moral of the story is it was not an emergency and not a good use of 911.

• We are still looking at having people join the Saskatchewan Crime Watch Advisory Net-

work. To sign up go to www.saskcrimewatch. ca. This is how you find out about crimes and criminals in the area. You don’t have to do anything but listen or read. You can get a text message, email, or if your only thing is a physical land line, you can get a voice recording of what our message is.

As my colleague in Moosomin stated “Knowledge is power. Choose to be powerful” • Be careful if you smoke. Make sure you know where your cigarette buyts end up. If the grass is dry it can catch fire, a plastic cup is not a good ashtray, nor is a garbage bag with garbage in it. Flower pots are also bad choices. The “soil” is very combustible, being it is not truly soil. .

• We have had quite a few child welfare calls as of late as well as mental health files. We understand parenting can be frustrating, however, your child refusing to listen to you is a parenting issue, not a policing issue.

• Some people wreck it for all people.

If you are operating an ATV or snowmobile, depending on the season do not be operating it on somebody else’s land without their knowledge or permission. Farmers particularly get upset when you drive across their freshly seeded crop. An $80 ticket was issued for operating an ATV on private land without permission.

• Now, if you happen to leave an outside door of an establishment open or unlocked, do not be surprised that someone may go in and damage or kick in an inside door. If you know who broke into the Memorial Hall in Carlyle please contact our Detachment.

Although it does not appear anything was stolen, there was damage.

• I know I trust my friends. That said I don’t trust them with my credit card or bank card information. Someone trusted the wrong “friend”. Thus we are investigating an incident involving a bank card and unlawful withdrawals.

• We assisted the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol with an impaired

driver they arrested.

Samples of 130 and 120 mg% were obtained. The driver did not have their licence seized, because they did not have one. tsk, tsk.

• We continue to investigate a Break and Enter which has resulted in a Search Warrant in the Fillmore Detachment area and two arrests. We are a long way from wrapping this up, however, we thank the public that assisted in

this matter.

• Members wrote approximately 20 tickets and 15 warnings over the last week.

• Tickets were issued for fail to produce registration certificate - $100, fail to stop at stop sign - $230, backing when unsafe - $125, insecure load - $175, fail to wear seatbelt - $175, fail to yield to on coming traffic when making left hand turn - $230, and fail to dim headlights when

approaching on coming traffic - $125 and most expensive speeding ticket was for $300.

• Warnings were issued for operate an unregistered trailer, disobey stop sign, speeding, excessive damage to windshield, fail to wear seatbelt, passing when unsafe, open liquor in a vehicle and use a cell phone.

• Inspection notices were issued for window tint.

Ending the stigma of Mental Health was the focus of the Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Night May 30 at the Happy Gang Club in Carlyle.

A group of concerned citizens, including counsellors, RCMP and EMS members joined Donna Bowyer, Director, Friends for Life, of the Canadian Mental Health Association. Bowyer shared how grief, loss, anxiety and depression can seriously disrupt the lives of 1 in 3 people during their lifetime.

While this number appears to be increasing, it could be simply due to the higher level of awareness of these mental health issues. Bowyer shared that even a good change is a loss, using the example of buying a new home. While a new home is exciting it means leaving the old home behind, along with all of its memories, and that in itself is a loss. She explained the construction of a loss line, beginning with your first memories and continuing until the present. In it you include all the chan-

ges that have shaped your life, and then you examine each change.

If you find yourself getting emotional about the change, it signifies that you may not have resolved the loss. Add on a few other losses that are unresolved and you may discover that you have made choices in your life based on fear and the need to be in control.

Statistics say that Anxiety Disorders are the most common of all mental health problems, affecting 1 in 10 people, more women than men, and affecting children as well. Treatment brings the level of anxiety down in order to work on it but is not a cure. It is treatable though. She explained anxiety disorders can include panic disorder; phobias; Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder; Agoraphobia and general Anxiety Disorder.

Depression occurs in the same part of the brain as dementia and in fact, out of 10 people who see a professional for dementia related symptoms, 9 of those will be suffering from depression. Depression looks different in women than in men. Women pull

in on themselves while men tend to push people away, often working on a project where they will work alone. She shared some saddening facts about suicides, including the rise in numbers of young people. Children do not realize the finality of death until the age of 10-15 but understand suicide at the age of 8. Some of this is due to the words used to describe death to children, such as passed away, in a better place, or just gone.

Also mentioned was cartoons such as Wily Coyote and of course video games, where the avatar dies and then comes back to life to compete again.

She spoke of the stigma of mental illness and how it translates into the prejudice that people are dangerous, unpredictable, selfish, weak, lazy or suicidal, to name just a few.

Throughout the presentation, the need to be well informed as to the signs of mental illness was obvious, but more so, the need to recognize that mental illness is just as much an illness as diabetes or cancer and that the sooner we, as a community, recognize it, the sooner it will be treated.

mented on the simplicity of life. Joyce remembered Sunday gatherings, with people dropping in. Clifford missed fishing and travelling with his wife. Gladys spoke of how we trusted people! As Ralph Burke said, “Today we lack the honesty and integrity in our society.”

The Associated Gospel Church brought us worship, led by Gordon and John Kliever, with Carol Veysey on piano.

Later in the week, Sandra Dick and her Berg cousins formed their family orchestra for our

entertainment.

They played flutes, clarinet, piano, mandolin, accordion and guitar. When Ralph Burke got his hands on the guitar, he found he hadn’t forgotten it.

We had touch of frost and an inch of rain.

Thank you to Dawn who put out oranges for the orioles, the first we have seen in the courtyard.

The hummingbirds are back too. Dawn also repaired the old rickety birdfeeder. Thank you, Francis Shaard and Alan Daku for bird feed and feeders.

Congratulations to Chase and Jaelene Boettcher on the safe arrival of their baby daughter, Karlee who was born May 24.

Roy and Bonnie Farr returned home on May 26 after enjoying a three-week holiday trip to Ireland.

On May 28 hubby and I had a quick trip to Regina where I had an appointment for my eyes – the results were good as they healed well and my eyesight has improved, but will still be wearing glasses I’m sure. That will be the next thing on the agenda – a visit to the optometrist.

Shelly Cowan spent a couple of days in Minot visiting her sisters Dicie and Karen, returning home on June 2.

The Alida Rec. Board held their annual Sports Day this past weekend – May 31 and June 1. These were the eight teams who registered for the Slowpitch event – Bin Muckers, Chicks Dig, Blue Ballaz,

John Beers, High Octane, Manor Mayhem, My Dixie Wrecked and 361 Café. Now with names such as that – the ball games should really be exciting to watch.

Which one will come out on top – only time will tell!

The event began on Friday evening with a couple of slow-pitch ball games. This was followed with a dance being held in the rink lobby. A Concession booth and bar was set up for both days and these two booths seemed to be very busy. The hamburgers and hot dogs proved to be deliciously barbecued and enjoyed throughout the weekend. On Saturday a Bouncy Castle was set up and the young folks really enjoyed their time spent in the castle while the adults either watched or continued to play their ball games. The results of the Slow-pitch tournament saw High Octane (Glen Ewen/Oxbow) coming out on top in first place followed by the Bin Muckers (Redvers) in second. The weekend proved to be a

very successful one for the Rec. Board and they do appreciate the great support given by the ball teams, volunteers, workers, spectators and everyone else – Another success! Hope to see you all again next year.

A book, “Last Flight To Stuttgart” written by Lisa Jean Russ, has recently been published as an act of remembrance to lesser-known servicemen and women who risked their lives in World War ll. This book tells the true story of seven brave young men of EQ-P Goose Squadron who lost their lives in the flaming wreckage of a bomber on a dangerous mission over Germany on the night of March 15, 1944.

One of the crew members on that ill-fated mission was Pilot Officer, William (Bill) Taylor of Nottingham, Saskatchewan, an uncle of Kathy Anthony, of Alida.

Hey did you watch the Football game this past weekend Riders vs Calgary? Well it wasn’t the end result I was hoping for, but then it was only the first one to start the season off – we’ll just hope for better results to follow. Go Riders Go – Green is the Color – Football is the Game.

Oh boy, oh boy is it ever dry out there – please be careful with any outdoor fires you may want to enjoy, make sure they are contained and watched closely. My garden is sooooo dry I’m not sure if anything will come up without some moisture of some kind. My rain water barrel is also dry so even my flowers may start to suffer. The crops surely do need the moisture as well. Please oh please send us a nice 3-day rain soon, or at least a little shower to fill the rain barrels again.

The Wawota Drop in Centre was a very busy place on May 18 and 19. Betty Walker celebrated her 90th birthday those days.Four cousins came from Nanaimo and Courtney, BC, Betty’s three brother’s families were present coming from Vancouver. Interior BC, Calgary and Regina. There were 44 there to enjoy the beef supper prepared by Reg Wilson, with the RTR’s pies for dessert. Picture taking and getting acquainted with the rest of the Easton and Dorrance connection filled the evening. Sunday morning saw a carry over from Saturday night plus the Ketcheson family and close friendsnumbered about 70 enjoyed a brunch prepared by the Mountney Ladies Club.

Family visitors stayed several days, sight seeing and visiting familiar places.

Congratulations to Breck Van Meer who was named the top second year cadet and has been recently promoted to Flight Corporal.

A successful Sportsman’s Dinner was held on May 25 at the Forum. Guest speakers were Amber Holland, Doug Sauter and Don Koharski. They all brought different messages but one common thread throughout all of their speeches was the importance of our small communities and how we should be

proud of where we come from and give back as much as we can. The funds raised will allow an addition to be build on to the Forum.

Sympathy to the family and many friends of Fay (Chilton) Fox who passed away on May 23 at Deer View Lodge. She was 80 years old. She was a former teacher, prepared taxes and was the treasurer of the United Church for many years. She was involved in many community affairs. Her funeral service was held at the Wawota United Church on June 5.

The Wawota Museum held their annual spring tea and bake sale last Friday. Many came out to support the Museum for the event. Some out of town visitors were Merle Coleman and her daughter, Dreda Brayford from Virden. Dreda’s cousin, Terry Phenix also showed up.

Word has been received of the passing of Peter Charles of Regina. He passed away peacefully at his home on May 24 at the age of 78 years old. Sympathy to his children. Danielle, Deanne, Jana and Jared and his sisters, Mimi Bleich and Louise Lamontagne.

Peter lived life to the fullest, teaching, travelling and spending time with family and friends. His life will be celebrated at a garden party in Regina some time this summer.

Junior football coming in 2020 David Willberg Estevan Mercury The people trying to bring junior football to this region are excited to announce that the team, known as the Southeast Junior Roughnecks, is slated to begin play next year.

Jason Bresciani, who is at the helm of the initiative along with Frank DeBruyn, said they won’t be able to get the team off the ground in 2019, so they will begin play in 2020.

“It will give us a year to get our sponsorship in order and get the 19061SF0 19061SF1

operational costs in the bank. We should be officially going next year,” Bresciani told the Mercury.

The goal will be to have a fall camp later this year, then move into an offseason winter program to get ready for next year.

A meeting for prospective players will take place on June 22 at the Western Star Hotel in Estevan, starting at 7 p.m. The Roughnecks can accept players who are between the ages of 18 and 21 at the end of this year.

Coaches are also needed for the program.

“Right away we want to start reaching out to anybody who is

interested in coaching who wants to commit to the 2020 season,” said Bresciani.

Anyone interested in coaching can email southeast.jr.football@ gmail.com. Applications will be due by June 8.

Then they will make their selection.

Prospective players who can’t make it to the meeting are also encouraged to email DeBruyn and Bresciani.

The Roughnecks are also still looking for people to be on the board, and they are also in need of sponsors.

Operation costs would be the biggest needs, to cover busing, hotels, food, field rentals and other expenses.

“Our normal operational costs are going to be quite a bit. We’re doing our best with equipment to get as many hand-me downs as we can.”

Sponsors would be needed for equipment, jerseys and even travel.

Bresciani stressed the team has received some great support from the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Regina Thunder. The Roughriders provided equipment to the Thunder, who in turn supplied it to the Roughnecks. It’s still in good shape, and it’s still certified, or the Roughnecks wouldn’t have acquired it.

“If it wasn’t for the Riders donating along

the line, we wouldn’t have equipment already,” he said.

Bresciani and DeBruyn announced their intention earlier this year to bring junior football to the southeast, in an effort to give kids a chance to play football locally after high school.

They would be playing in the Manitoba Major Junior Football League, which has teams in Winnipeg and Brandon.

Communication is ongoing between the Roughnecks and the league, and Bresciani said the club would be welcome into the league next year.

Bresciani believes there is still a lot of interest in this team.

“I believe there is still a good buzz around there, and a buzz around the area,” said Bresciani.

“Myself and Frank DeBruyn, we’ve still been getting approached at the rinks. We do get some Facebook messages, and the interest is there. We just have to keep pushing and keep promoting it.

“That’s the biggest thing right now. We have to promote who we are and what we are, and why we’re doing this.”

This is not just an Estevan team. This is a regional initiative, and they have received interest from prospective players in Weyburn, Carlyle, Moosomin and other communities.

By Calvin Daniels In a year when summer weather forecasts at least hint at too hot and too dry a condition for crops and China has plunged the agriculture sector into a time of trade uncertainty, more bad news is hardly what producers want to hear.

But more bad news is what they have gotten.

Recent numbers released by Statistics Canada show net incomes on Canadian farms in 2018.

A decline is never positive news but it gets downright depressing and more than a little concerning when you read further and see the decline was 45 percent, which is the largest annual percentage decrease since 2006, according to Statistics Canada.

Realized net farm income — which is defined as the difference between farm cash receipts and operating expenses, minus depreciation plus income in kind — dropped 45.1 percent in 2018 to $3.9 billion, Statistics Canada numbers detailed in a recent Western Producer story.

The 2018 decline follows a 2.8 percent decrease in 2017.

Among the suggested reasons for the dramatic decline were rising feed, interest and labour costs together with little change in farm cash receipts.

The reasons are suggestive as to the root of the problem agriculture has long held, little control of the prices they receive for their commodities, giving them little ability to look to their market to offset rising prices on the other side of their ledger.

In most businesses there is at least some ability to pass off increasing business costs to their consumers. If it costs more to buy the ingredients for lasagna or a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich a restaurant can inch the cost up to the consumer to cover

the cost.

Farmers can’t turn to a canola oil crusher or oat processor and ask for more for their product, as farmers are price takers, not price setters.

Of course the question is now where net incomes from farmers may go in the next 12 months.

Even if the numbers are more theory than reality, as can be the case in terms of real dollars in the bank, a decline in 2019 is obvious.

Things currently are far from ideal in terms of prospects ahead already.

There is an almost uni-

versal need for moisture across the Canadian Prairies, and we are barely into June. Timely moisture will be critical moving forward.

The China situation, and the reactions of the already wild card American president Donald Trump simply muddy the waters in terms of trying to predict what might happen tomorrow, let alone by the time harvest 2019 is complete.

The Stats Canada numbers simply suggest farmers need a few things to fall their way soon or the situation could turn dire.

Re-dedication ceremony held Submitted The RCMP recently held a re-dedication ceremony in honour of former Arcola resident Cpl Donald (Archie) Harvey who died in the line of duty in Alberta in 1967.

Last year during the annual inspections of the RCMP/RNWP graves in our area Carlyle Detachment S/Sgt Darren Simons and retired S/Sgt George Anderson noted that Cpl. Harvey’s grave stone had cracked. They followed up and ensured the grave was repaired.

The two were also instrumental in planning and organizing a re-dedication ceremony in honour of Cpl Harvey.

It was held at the Arcola Cemetery on Friday, May 24.

The ceremony was attended by Cpl. Harvey’s widow Hilda and other family members, some of whom traveled from Ontario to be in attendance. Members of the public also attended, some of whom knew Cpl Harvey during his time in Arcola.

Participating in the ceremony were officers dressed in red serge from RCMP detach-

ments in Carlyle, Carnduff, Estevan and Weyburn, RCMP Veterans, members of the Royal Canadian Legion, the RCMP Chaplain, a piper from the RCMP pipe band and a bugler from the Royal Canadian Legion.

Cpl. Harvey’s family expressed sincere appreciation to the RCMP for both repairing the grave stone and organizing the ceremony.

The following is an article detailing the Call for Service that ultimately led to Cpl. Harvey dying in the line of duty: HARVEY, DONALD A. - CPL. Regimental No. 17129 June 23, 1967 Grande Prairie, Alberta Age: 34 Leonard Otto Borg was a 22 year old drifter who had settled in Grande Prairie, a small town in Alberta 250 miles northwest of Edmonton. A Canadian of Swedish decent, he was a man with a criminal history who had already spent six and a half years in prison. He claimed he got three of those years for something he didn’t

do. Borg hated prison and had no intention of going back there. He told his father, “There will be blood spilled before I ever go back to prison again.” He also hated the police and for a long time had harboured plans to kill a Mountie.

The police knew how twisted Borg was, but they didn’t realize the depth of his rage and how dangerous he had become. They didn’t know that six months before, Borg had murdered his girlfriend, Effy Reindeer. He had killed her in her cabin out in the wilds of Spencer’s Bridge and then had burned the place down to hide her body. They also didn’t know that he was planning to kill his new girlfriend, Georgina Roberts, who was having an affair with another man. Borg expected to be caught, but planned to wreak his revenge on a few policemen when they came to arrest him.

At 3:00am, Friday, June 23, 1967, Borg tried to stab Georgina Roberts to death.

From Page 10 - Re-dedication service She put up such a struggle that the only way he could kill her was to choke her to death with her own scarf. Then at 9:00 am when the stores opened, he went out and bought himself a single shot .22 calibre rifle. At 10:40 am, when he returned to his apartment over the garage, he phoned the RCMP Beaverlodge Detachment to report the murder. But he was so nervous and did it so quickly that he failed to tell them the address. He called a second time at 11:20 am, but bungled it again.

Finally, at 2:30 pm, he connected and induced

the police to respond.

Once he got off the phone, he set up his ambush. Borg opened the window that looked out on the driveway to the street. He piled his jacket on the floor beneath the window so that he could kneel on it. Then he gathered his rifle and ammunition and cigarettes and placed them on the bed beside him . . . and waited.

The two RCMP that responded to his latest call were Cpl. Bill Biggar and Cpl. Donald A. Harvey, who was known by his second name, Archie. Bill Biggar remembers what happened

when they arrived: “We got there at 2:40 pm and, as soon as we entered the yard at the end of the driveway, a shot rang out. It came from the window above the garage, over forty feet away. The bullet hit Archie in the chest.

I learned later that it hit him between the first and second ribs and severed the aorta. He died almost instantly.

I was lucky. Borg only had a single shot.22 and he had to take time to reload or he would have got me too. I took cover and waited for him to show himself in the window. The first thing I saw coming out was his rifle and then his head appeared. I was all set to shoot and got a round off right away. It nicked him on the left ear and he let out a howl. That seemed to take the fight out of him and the next thing you know, Borg threw his rifle out the window and surrendered.”

When backup officers arrived, Cpt. Harvey’s body was removed and taken to Grande Prairie Hospital. Georgina Robert’s body was found in the bedroom and it was also removed from the scene.

As Borg was led away, he told police: “I shot one in the chest... at least that’s where I aimed.” Borg also left a note that indicated he had planned to kill a policeman for a long time.

A plaque in his honour was raised at Depot Division in Regina. It stands on the wall of the Chapel not far from the gymnasium where the burly young recruit was known in training as the “best boxer in barracks.”

Harvey was buried at the United Church Cemetery in his hometown of Arcola, Saskatchewan. He was survived by his wife, Hilda, their two children, aged seven and five, and both of his parents.

At his trial in Edmonton in April 1968, Leonard Borg was sentenced to be hanged July

24, 1968. By an orderin-council, his execution was commuted to a term of life imprisonment.

He was sent to the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert where he died five years later from cancer.

Report from the Legislature Dan D’Autremont, MLA for Cannington Saskatchewan’s economy is improving and our province continues to grow after three years of low natural resource prices and fiscal challenges.

Despite the headwinds of a federal carbon tax and trade challenges, Saskatchewan has now seen nine consecutive months of strong job growth. Another sign of Saskatchewan’s resiliency and strength is our position as a leader in wholesale trade growth – second among the provinces and #1 in Western Canada. Canada and Saskatchewan can celebrate after attempts by the B.C. NDP government to block the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and future pipeline projects were recently struck down by the B.C. Court of Appeal. The unanimous 5-0 decision recognizes and makes clear that B.C. cannot limit oil from another province, and reaffirms that building pipelines and getting our sustainable energy to market is in the national interest. The B.C. NDP government says it plans to appeal to the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the Saskatchewan NDP are silent, as they always are when it comes to supporting Saskatchewan’s most important jobs and industries. The

ball is now in the federal government’s court to get Trans Mountain approved right away and send a clear signal that other pipeline projects are possible. Changes to federal Advance Payment Program to help canola producers announced on May 1st are still not available and producers have been told by federal officials that they may not be in place until months from now. This is way too late for canola producers who are already close to completing seeding. The federal government needs to make the changes to the Advance Payment Program they committed to. This is critical to agricultural producers who are facing uncertainty in international markets. Your Saskatchewan Party government has reached out and is calling on the federal Agriculture Minister to get this fixed immediately. Recently, we learned Japan is reopening their doors to Canadian beef over 30 months of age. This restriction has been in place since 2005 with the border closed since 2003. I am pleased to see the government of Japan’s recognition of the quality and safety of Canadian beef of all ages. We continue to work to open up markets for Saskatchewan products, and will continue to advocate for our Sas-

katchewan industries at home and around the world. Here at home, our government has lifted restrictions on bringing alcohol to Saskatchewan for personal use.

This simple change is part of our commitment to freer trade within Canada and ending unnecessary trade barriers between provinces. In just over a decade, Saskatchewan has grown by 160,000 people and created 75,000 new jobs.

This kind of activity has allowed us to make strategic investments to: • strengthen health care, taking surgical wait times from the longest in Canada to now among the shortest; • improve education outcomes, with 46 new or replacement schools and 925 more teachers for our classrooms; and • invest in our most vulnerable people, making Saskatchewan the best place in Canada for someone with a disability.

Our government’s Growth Plan was a vision for a growing province, that built on the strength of our people, our resources and innovation, to make Saskatchewan an economic leader. New mediums for ALS fundraiser Mary Moffat

A very determined group of local people are working hard to earn money to help find a cure for ALS and to help support individuals and families affected by this disease.

In 2016, Gregg and Debbie Fischer, Mary McNair, daughter Sonia and other family members took part in the ALS walk in Winnipeg, dressed as the Care-aLot Team. It was a 5k walk and even though it was tough going for him, Gregg insisted on getting out of the wheelchair and push Sonia across the finish line in his chair. In 2017 the ALS Avengers wore green shirts with their favorite Avenger character on the front, as they walked in Regina where they donated $10,000 from their fundraising efforts. In 2018 they held a walk right here in Carlyle and along with all the other fundraisers held, they raised over $19,000!

July 27 is the date chosen this year for the 2nd Annual Carlyle ALS

Walk, and registration begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Carlyle Sports Arena. The walk can be 3k or 5k, and there will be transportation available should anyone be unable to complete the route. This year the Rapid Relief Squad from Oxbow is sending 25 people and a food truck to help out with the walk, something the organizers of the walk are very grateful for. It is a big undertaking and their support will make life much easier. Teams are invited to register online at www.WASLforALS.ca and Carlyle is aiming for bragging rights to the most teams registered.

You can sign your team up and share your link so people can donate directly, with receipts issued for donations of $20 and up. 40% of funds raised go to research and 60% stays in the province to help meet needs of clients.

Mary McNair has embraced this cause, and sits as the Vice Chair of ALS Board of Saskatchewan, is the Chair of the Provincial Walk committee and the Leader of ALS Aware-

ness & Education Pillar. She also sits on the equipment committee where she helps decide where the funds can best be used to help provide equipment to support families.

June 7 is the kick-off for the 2nd annual Walk to end ALS BBQ Brisket and Burger Sale from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Main Street Carlyle. Preorders will be taken, so please call or text Cara at 306-577-0426.

A watercolor paint night is being held at the Carlyle Legion Hall Monday, June 10 at 7 p.m. with local artist, Chylisse Marchand. The paintings will be tulips, already traced on the canvas so no one has to worry about their lack of skill, and watercolor is such a forgiving medium, anyone who chooses to support the fundraiser will be pleased with their creation. Marchand has donated her services for the evening because ALS has touched her life and she wants to help with the fundraising efforts.

ful companion, has certainly raised that awareness around the community.

The sun was shining, the beverages were chilled, and the food was perfect, all lending a perfect way to kickstart the week.

If so, why not take the plunge for the Summer Times’ annual photo contest!

If you have a summer-themed photo from the region that you feel might just be good enough to ‘WOW!’ email it to us at observer@sasktel.net with the subject line “Summer Times Photo Contest”. Photos should be transmitted via email in their highest resolution. Photos that do not meet resolution requirements will not be considered in the contest.

One winner will be chosen every week, and that photo will grace the front page of the Summer Times newspaper for that week.

In the final issue of the Summer Times, a winner will be chosen from all the weekly winners, and that lucky person will be given a grand prize!
