From Front page - Lions Supper and Auction

By Mary Moffat While Frank Faber took home an early prize of a coconut cream pie made by Carlyle’s very own PIEMAN, Dennis Feduk, the $43 he paid for each of the six delicious slices was just one of the many highlights of the 28th Annual Carlyle & District Lions Club Fundraising Supper on March 7 at the Carlyle Memorial Hall.

While the final total raised has not yet been announced for this year, the biggest piece of the pie over the years has been the impressive $700,000 collected by the Lions Club. While they do not benefit in any way from all of this work, the community sees every cent donated back in many ways.

Long time auctioneer Ward Cutler, while a little under the weather, did his usual excellent job as he managed to

both weave history and fun into his job of selling off the donated items.

This is Cutler’s 24th year.

To add to the flavour of the evening, the master of ceremony was Wayne Wilson who has held the job since 2002, and once again showed by his skills that practice makes perfect.

With about 193 people on hand to enjoy a roast turkey and pork dinner prepared by Eileen Corrigan and Linda Chapman, Cornerstone Theatre members were behind the bar serving drinks and raising money for their group. The Lions Club acknowledged Jack & Diane Wilson for donating the pork since 2002 as well as the two hardworking ladies for preparing the meals since 2005. They each received a gift certificate for a night off from cooking!

The evening provided many fun ways to participate in the fundraising, and each attendee enjoyed the wonderful meal along with a special door prize located conveniently at their seat. With over 250 items available to win by purchasing tokens, conceivably everyone had a chance to win all night long. Tokens for the Dutch auction, raffle tables, hunger games and a $1000 travel voucher were available for either 20/$20 or 100/$80.

Vermillion Energy sponsored the Hunger Games 2019 with the first prize of $700 in food coupons won by Murray Mills. Dwayne Bye and Don Corrigan each won $50 in coupons.

There was something to please everyone at the raffle tables. the $1000 travel voucher. Another popular item was the fifty surprise bags available for purchase at $10 each, and offering gift certificates and vouchers ranging from $10 to $100 from a variety of businesses.

While the winners of the live and silent auction items would be too long to list, we do have to mention that one lucky winner bid $650 to receive one pie a month for a year. Now this reporter will just need to investigate when the pies will be delivered and then plan for an impromptu visit for a slice of one of Feduk’s famous desserts, worth every penny!

So if you missed out on attending the event this year, make sure you plan to include a ticket in your budget for 2020 and leave some room for the pie.

Wilson-Raybould demands new accountability standard

By Murray Mandryk There are times in this business when it’s simply great to be wrong.

And being wrong about the low expectations of Jody Wilson-Raybould’s testimony before the House of Commons justice committee was one of those times.

The past couple weeks hasn’t just been about setting Canadian politics on its head and perhaps toppling the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government.

While that might very well be result and might very well be what a lot of Western Canadians, especially, rural Canadians, want to see, what WilsonRaybould has done may be more important than even that.

It could be that Wilson-Raybould has injected a new standard of public ministerial accountability for all governments.

Her forthright testimony wreaked of credibility in its detailed and note-backed assertions of multiple examples of Trudeau, his former principle secretary Gerald Butts and that even the privy council applying undue pressure on the former attorneygeneral to give SNC-Lavalin an out-of-court prosecution deal.

Wilson-Raybould’s testimony was unprecedented and it has forced others in the Liberal government to consider that there needs to be another way to do politics. This is demonstrated by Jane Philpott’s decision to follow suit and also resign from cabinet.

Of course, the federal Conservatives and several of their close allies those in the Saskatchewan Party giddy at the Liberal misfortunate… but maybe others in politics need to be careful here.

As unlikely as it may seem, there’s always the chance the federal Liberals will get their act together.

After all, what happens if Trudeau is forced out and replaced by someone like Wilson-Raybould as leader? What then happens to the Sask. Party’s entire political narrative that’s been all about opposing the Trudeau brand?

But here is a perhaps the most intriguing question: What happens to the other existing governments are now held to the same standard of credibility and accountability as the federal Liberals now are?

That thought is worth pondering if you compare what’s gone with the SNC-Lavalin file in Ottawa the Global Transportation Hub file here in this province.

For three years now, the Sask. Party government has been haunted by the Global Transportation Hub scandal in which former minister and Kindersley MLA Bill Boyd rented farmland from a businessman who made $6 million by buying 204 acres of land under government expropriation. That land was then sold to a Regina businessman who made $5 million when he sold it to the GTH for $103,000 an acre.

Notwithstanding an RCMP investigation that found no grounds for criminal charge and notwithstanding early attempts by the then Brad Wall-led Sask. Party to claim there was no wrong-doing here, the matter has been nothing short of a political scandal.

While running for the Sask. Party leadership last year, most of the six candidates raised this as a concern, the most critical being, former Saskatchewan attorney general Gord Wyant.

“We need to shine a very, very bright light on this,” Wyant told the CBC at the time. “And the only way to do that is to give the commissioner the power that he needs not only to compel witnesses and compel documents and testimony but to make some findings and so that we can put this whole thing behind us as a party.”

Well, fast forward to today when Wyant is deputy premier and education minister … and suddenly sees no need for the examination into the matter.

On at least 30 occasions, Sask. Party government backbenchers blocked GTH or government employees from having to testify before legislative committees examining the GTH. Suffice to say, Saskatchewan taxpayers need more disclosure. This is also what Wyant once believed.

Right now, the contrast with Wilson-Raybould could not be more stark.

If Wilson-Raybould is the new standard, governments everywhere will struggle to step up to meet it.

Yes, it might be uphill all the way I just returned from eastern Europe having spent about a month in the country of Romania. I wasn’t there as a tourist yet I was able to see a lot. I wasn’t there as an employee yet I did a lot of work.

I wasn’t there to visit friends yet I came away with many.

I was on a mission trip in a country that was unfamiliar to me, yet one I hold close to my heart. Our two daughters were Shelley Luedtke born in Romania and through the path of adoption joined our family when they were little. It’s a country I know so little about but one that has played such a huge role in my life. So foreign…and so familiar…at the same time.

I have been home now for a few days. Physically my body is still recovering. Part of that likely comes from jet lag, but more so the walking, walking and more walking to get where we needed to be each day.

All the time seemingly going uphill. So I admit I am weary, and yet totally rejuvenated at the same time. I had a chance to immerse myself in new experiences, a change of context, and opportunities that I cherish. It excited and energized me in many ways. And it left me with much to reflect on.

I worked alongside those who don’t have very much but are pouring all they have into those who have less. I watched a team of deaf missionaries bring smiles to a group of children who have little to smile about. I shared conversations with people whose life experience is so vastly different from mine. I talked with some who see a future outside of their city and even their country, while others knew little of what was beyond their neighborhood.

I had moments when my heart soared and times when it simply broke. So many stories. So many experiences. Yet I am reluctant to share much--yet. I need time to think. Time to be still and reflect. Time to try and make sense of what I experienced without trying to make it fit into a cultural perspective it isn’t

So right now I find myself pondering a small event. One of the least significant encounters of all.

One that didn’t even happen in Romania, yet it is sitting with me.

On the flight home my daughter and I were stretching our legs and standing in an area of the plane next to the bathrooms. A mom carrying an infant handed her baby to my daughter and asked if she would hold him while she used the washroom.

What an act of trust. Of course there was no place my daughter could have gone with that child since we were contained within the confines of the plane, in addition to the fact that many eyes with little else to look at would be watching for potential problems.

Many people could have taken action if need be.

My daughter happily held and rocked the infant for the few minutes until it was back in its mother’s arms. It caused me to think about some of the children I had just spent time with. Some were abandoned. Many neglected. Children whose well-being is in jeopardy but who have few eyes on them today.

Yet change is possible. The handful of those who are trying to look out for them don’t do so with blinders, goggles or even rose-colored glasses. They are looking at the child and their situation realistically.

But running parallel with that realism is respect, affection and…hope. Let me correct that; they aren’t running exactly parallel, but coming alongside, and slightly ahead, leading with an unmistakable sense of optimism and dignity.

There are children where I was, where I returned to and in places I’ve never been who are in need; in need of food, clothing, shelter, education, and something as simple as a hug. Every child needs to hear they are loved. That they matter. That someone cares.

Yes, it is an uphill battle, a steep climb to be sure, but it is a climb we are called to take. We can take action. One of these children may never be put in our arms, but their future can most certainly be placed in our hands.

That’s my outlook.

How do interest rates influence your investment choices?

In our country, the Bank of Canada (BoC) sets the benchmark interest rate and raises or lowers it to steady or stimulate the Canadian economy and avoid inflation.

Although our economy has strengthened over the past few months, and moderate growth is expected to continue, the BoC has opted to keep its benchmark interest rate low.

Interest rates have a wide impact on the economy and a direct impact on your investments – and on your investment choices.

Lowering and low interest rates • Make it possible to borrow money at extremely attractive interest rates with the federal monetary objective of stimulating the economy by making more money easily available for purchases and investing.

• Means money in savings

accounts earns very low interest, which motivates investors to look elsewhere for better returns.

• Make conservative income-producing securities –Guaranteed Investment Certificates and direct investment in bonds– more attractive because the rate of interest may be higher and is locked-in for the duration of the investment.

Rising and higher interest rates • Generally reduces the amount of money in circulation which helps to keep inflation low.

• Make borrowing money more expensive and thus increases expenses for companies, which can lower stock prices (although interest rates are just one of many interrelated factors that affect stock valuations) and for consumers who are spending more to service debt.

• Conservative incomeproducing securities with locked-in interest rates lose value. Although as fixed-rate investments mature, the proceeds can be reinvested at higher rates and higher bond rates tend to sway investors toward bonds (and other “low-risk” investments) and away from stocks.

Five types of birds that make great pets If you want a pet that will fill your house with song, or one you can teach to speak, get a bird. Here are five types that could make a great addition to your home.

1. Canaries: this type is best for people who want to watch and listen to their bird, but don’t want to handle it. Male canaries can mimic sounds it hears in your home and transform them into birdsong.

2. Lovebirds: you have a better chance of bonding with a single lovebird than a pair.

They need lots of social interaction, so be ready to spend time training and playing with them.

3. Budgies: sometimes called a parakeet, this small parrot is friendly, easy to take care of and some can be trained to speak better than larger parrots.

4. African grey parrots: this is the bird to get if you want one you can teach to talk.

Some have vocabularies of hundreds of words. If an African grey gets bored or neglected, they will voice their displeasure loudly.

5. Cockatiels: this medium sized parrot is very intelligent and when hand-raised, they’re affectionate pets. They don’t usually learn to talk but they can mimic household sounds like doorbells and ringing phones.

No matter what type of bird you get, make sure to

give it a cage big enough to fly around in with plenty of perches and toys. Lots of love and attention are also requisite.

Make sure your home is safe for your birds. Their re-

spiratory systems are much more delicate than ours, and they can’t handle things like cigarette smoke, the fumes that come from non-stick cookware or scented candles, and air fresheners.

Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons It is so easy to mistakenly dial 911. I know from my work phone I have to dial 9 to get out, then 1 if it is long distance and it can be so easy to hit 1 twice. I do not know why they make us dial 9 to get out when there are so many other numbers. That said, I am just a small cog in the wheel and will continue to investigate and monitor investigations involving 911 being called by accident. We had two such calls this week, one was caused by someone playing with a friend’s phone and the other was likely caused by children playing with the phone.

We also responded to two false alarms.

There are these medium size and large yellow vehicles on the road.

They are hard not to see, although, you will find out later in the report someone drove into one, thus the reason I did not say “hard not to miss” being someone hit one.

You see them mostly in the morning and afternoon. They transport our children and they have blinking lights on them, as well as stop arms that extend. It does not matter which side of the road you are on, if

you see the stop arm out, you stop!!. You wait, and if you have to wait too long for your liking, too bad. The reason we as a society have had to put the stop signs and stop arms on school busses is a lack of common sense. If you are not sure what to do, drive the other way, avoid the school bus and school bus zones totally. Whatever you do, do not pass a school bus with its stop arm out, in either lane.

We continue to do our condition checks on those that were released awaiting trial and those that are on conditions after a criminal conviction. Pretty simple, comply and you do not go back to gaol. (not a spelling mistake, I use the British / Canadian spelling of the word, not the American spelling) For those who travel to Winterpeg you will note you pass by Gaol Road so I am not alone.

We had an assault reported which was from a dispute between an individual and his landlord which appears to revolve around the fact the landlord does not like that the tenant may be selling illegal drugs.

No charges are warranted and we will continue to investigate all the allegations.

An individual showed up to the Detachment to surrender themselves on warrants from Regina. We cleared the warrants up and the individual was released.

An individual reported their common law attended their home and took some property. Apparently they are going through a break up. The individual also wanted us to apprehend the vehicle. Now here is what we can and can not do. OK, we can’t really do anything because the property in any common law, or marriage is mutual property. It does not matter who pays the bills, who registered the vehicle, who bought the property. It is mutual property. Thus, we can’t help, which in reality is a great thing being we don’t want someone to stay in a relationship because of a controlling spouse.

While clearing up a warrant, which we like to do the day before or the day of court, we found an individual breaching their release conditions.

We did not charge them for this, however, they did receive a 40 day sentence for their outstanding charges. Hopefully they can obtain some help for the addictions issues.

We are investigating a theft from outside a residence. Footprints in

the snow lead to a suspect and (refer to next paragraph) Traffic Members from Weyburn, Estevan, Carlyle and Carlyle Detachment Members did a search warrant. This was the result of much intelligence gathering to compile the warrant.

Some drugs and stolen property were located.

Charges under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act were laid and the individuals were released, as well as one individual received a charge of possession of stolen property. Apparently this was the last straw for the landlord and the tenants are looking for a new place to reside.

Members responded to a call of a white truck driving in an erratic manner. Unfortunately we did not find the white truck in question. Their time will come, hopefully it will not result in a fatality or injury.

Breakups can be nasty, especially when there is a family run business. Members investigated allegations of harassment. The dynamics of these files always amazes me. Blood may be thicker than water but sometimes it is the in law’s that are your ally when you least expect it. I personally think my mother in law would take my side....... well, I don’t think my wife reads these articles so I am pretty comfortable saying that.

We had an individual call 911, worried being they did not know when they last saw their spouse. It did not take our Member long to bring this file to some resolution. Unfortunately the elderly caller is dealing with dementia and although we don’t know how long it has been since they saw their spouse we did talk with someone who helped the caller out.

Recently an individual received a ticket for having an obscured licence plate. That individual complained about it and it resulted in a Councillor complaining to a Police Officer. Yes, we agree it is a cheesy ticket. That said one must know there is a “Rest of the Story”. You see the violator was given the choice of a $360 open liquor ticket or the $100 obscured licence plate. They chose the cheaper ticket. Maybe we should not use as much discretion........ nah, we will keep giving out reduced tickets and give people fictitious things to complain about. The thing is we must give out tickets. It is our duty.

I know most people like the Police......OK, maybe I have a vivid imagination......however, what always amazes me is when people complain about us hiding in the parking lots of their place of business.

Would you not think having a patrol vehicle near your place of business would be a good thing? Recently one of our Members had found a good place to hide and conduct speed enforcement. After dealing with a violator they returned to find that a trailer had been moved to prevent the Police Officer from hiding their police car at the location. This happens more often that you would think. I even know of a situation where someone complained about a Member parking a patrol vehicle in front of the complainants residence. What is ironic was, yes it was in front of the complainants residence, however, it was across from the Police Officer’s residence, parked legally I might add.

It was a busy week for collisions for our Detachment. We had one with a moose which resulted in the death of the moose and extensive damage to the vehicle, one where a tire came off a vehicle (check your lug nuts), another where a vehicle lost control on icy roads, one with an empty school bus which was caused by someone driving too fast for road conditions and an unfortunate collision resulting in one fatality and two injuries which appears to have been the result of a vehicle hitting a snow drift and losing control.

Did you know it is illegal to chase wildlife.

We have had a report of snowmobilers chasing deer. The evidence is limited, however, it is worthy to remind everyone not to chase wildlife.

Tickets were issued for fail to produce registration - $100 (this was in lieu of a $150 fail to have registration on a trailer), no insurance $580, fail to wear a seatbelt - $175 exceed the speed limit in a school zone - $270 and the most expensive speeding ticket was for $570 (and it was reduced) Warnings were issued for speeding, unregistered trailer, fail to stop at a stop sign, and cell phone use (dealt with by off duty Member) Inspection notices were issued for windshields, repair licence plate lights, service dash airbag, window tint, daytime running lights and headlights.

1, 2, 3, and 4, 2019. All sessions will be held at Knox United Church in Redvers, with the exception of Full Band which will be hled in the

SEEDING

October of 2011 saw the release of a third CD of German Hymns sung by the acclaimed choral ensemble “Canzona” with Loren at the piano.

Loren and his wife Lori live in Altona. ewan as a trumpet major in 1995. His 21 years of teaching experience in Saskatchewan began in the towns of Grenfell, Wolseley, Balcarres, Lemberg, and Neudorf. From 1999 to 2005, he taught band at Weyburn Junior High School and in 2006, Scott moved to Regina to teach grades 6-12 band for the Regina Catholic School Division. In the Winter Semester of 2010, Scott was an interim-conductor of bands at the University of Regina. He was also an assistant conductor for the University of Victoria Wind Symphony, and completed his Masters in Education from the University of Victoria in 2006.

His Masters project focused on exemplary teaching in beginner band. Scott moved to Saudi Arabia in 2011 to teach music for Saudi Aramco, the world’s largest oil company. In 2012, he moved back to Regina and has taught grades 6-8 band for the Regina Public School Division.

Scott continues to adjudicate throughout Saskatchewan and will guest conduct the North Saskatchewan Intermediate Honour Band in March.

Meet the Adjudicators . . .

Loren Hiebert (right) grew up in rural Saskatchewan, Kansas, and Manitoba. His early musical influences were hymn-singing and southern gospel music. His piano teachers have included Glenn Loewen, Donald Henry, Jenny Regehr, and Joan Passey. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music, and A.R.C.T. diplomas in Piano Performance and Piano Teaching.

Since 1980, Loren has been a music teacher in the Altona/Morden/Winkler area, with a large and active studio. His students have excelled at local festivals, and have been awarded numerous scholarships at the provincial level.

Loren has adjudicated in music festivals across Manitoba and western Ontario. He is also a member of the International Music Camp piano faculty.

Loren has been the accompanist for numerous individuals and groups, including the Faith and Life Male Choir and Canzona. In addition, he is active as a chamber musician in various other classical and jazz combinations.

Loren has made four recordings with violinist Rosemary Siemens. In November of 2009, Loren and Rosemary performed in several concerts to release their most recent CD “Gospel” which raised over $33,000 for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

Gordon F. Kells High School Congratulations to Tucker Sharp who will be participating in the RCMP National Youth Engagement week at Depot at the end of March. Tucker is one of three Saskatchewan youth and one of only 32 in Canada, to be participating in the 2019 program.

This award was based on academic achievement and community engagement. Way to go Tucker!

The Alida Rec. Board hosted their first Murder

Mystery Dinner Theater on Saturday, Mar. 9 at the Alida Rink with a full house of 150 in attendance. A great time was had by all who attended.

The “Breakfast at the Rink” on Mar. 10 had Kitchen group #2 back at the helm for the last time this year and they served up 50 breakfasts - another good job guys and gals. The Breakfast Challenge total remains at 54 – hey Group 2 you’re catching up.

It is always good to see all the familiar faces coming back for breakfast every week. Next week it is Kitchen group #3 at the helm – remember there are only TWO breakfasts left to enjoy – see you at the rink.

Once again I was in my glory as this past week and weekend was the Men’s Brier being held in Brandon so when it was televised it was at a good hour.

Yea I glued to the television and thoroughly enjoyed watching the great curling. The results were in my favor when Alberta’s Team Koe won the Brier when he defeated the Wild Card Team (Bottcher). It was

a very exciting and close game, which could have gone either way. One of these times it will probably the younger team winning and new names on the trophy. It’s a couple of days away from the curling scene and then on Thursday curling is back on the tv screen – with the World’s Women’s Curling beginning. This year it is being held in Denmark again, and that makes it difficult watching the games live, time difference is a bummer – so I’m hoping that they will be rerunning the games as I’m not getting up at 2:00 am to watch curling. I may like curling, but I like my sleep more. Go – Canada – Go! The Villa Guild challenged the residents to a curling bonspiel. They laid out two “houses” with the Floor Curling set they had donated and played against all residents who were able. Then they brought in pizza for supper. Joyce Kay from the Haven was able to join the party. Members of the Guild are: Freda Hill, Charlotte Kovack, Helen Aulie, Doris and Rhonda Erickson and Alana O’Greysik Welcome to Violet Daku from Kennedy. Roy Bortolotto, her neighbor, brought his digital piano, and

played for us after dinner with Violet. Two of four Daku sons visited her this week.

March ushered in TeleMiracle. We gathered to roll up all the money from Card Bingo, and package it for the bank. This year we had no regular Bingo callers until some of the staff volunteered lately; and some of our rooms were empty; so we were only a drop in the TeleMiracle bucket.

The youth group from the Associated Gospel Church brought new games to play with the

residents. John Kliever, Mary and Bob Thiessen are the leaders. They brought lunch and joined us for a visit. What a delightful crew: Dawson Naylen, Amelia Penner, Callie Naylen, Josie Waldner and Bryce Penner. Thank You. The German Mennonite Church of Maryfield led Hymnsing Sunday night. Louis Ens was the song leader, with Belinda at the piano. Jacob and Anna Tiesen sand a duet in Russian, and then he led the choir in German hymns. A recent resident said, “I don’t know when I have enjoyed an evening more.

More to 27 Dresses than meets the eye

By Mary Moffatt While 27 Dresses was the title of Arcola Daycare’s 5th Annual Ladies Night Out, and there were brides galore, not one single groom was to be found, despite the approximately 275 people in attendance.

However, rivalry did seem to be a continuous theme throughout the evening. Suiting up for the Carlyle Cougars, Braden Liboiron, Brandon Lequyer, Korby Boutin and AP Dustin Boutin held their own against the Arcola-Kisbey Combines. While Lucas Hislop, Walker Hengen, Jared Taylor and Matt Mutz battled mightily for the top dollars, it was not meant to be. Carlyle came out the winner for total bids, but unfortunately Korby Boutin was bested by brother Dustin, in a little sibling rivalry. Arcola Daycare finished on top with $2450 added to their coffers as ladies bid

for the chance to have their favourite player acting as their male server for the night! One table in particular came prepared with a garment specially designed for their server! Be sure to check out the Observed At page for a photo of the lucky man.

After a tasty meal catered by Eileen Corrigan and Linda Chapman, the evening became a little more heated.

Amazing Entertainment invited us to join them in a rousing game of Arcola Feud, similar to Family Feud, with competitors chosen from the audience. Using the latest technology, ie Facebook, 100 people were polled and the top answers to some pretty interesting questions were collated. I would love to share those questions with you but what happens at Ladies Night, stays at Ladies Night. Needless to say, a good time was had by all.

The Feud was followed by the West Jet draw. Tickets were sold out before the evening began and Shane Warner of Weyburn was the lucky winner. Crystal Yanyu held the lucky ticket for the 50/50 draw.

Thanks to the server auction, the many donations from vendors, local businesses and community members, the raffle and silent auction bids, over $10,000 was raised for the daycare.

All of these funds will be used for renovations and upkeep which in turn will allow the daycare to keep its rates as low as possible. With 30+ families filling 29 spaces per day, it is a vital part of the community. Plans are already underway for the next fundraiser, so make sure you block off some time and money for the 6th Annual Ladies Night Out in 2020.

Too many strikeouts, as pitchers are becoming dominant and batters are more interested in — or forced to — swinging for the fences because defensive shifts have become the norm in major league parks. It’s all about “launch angle.”

Forbes Magazine reports Major League Baseball attendance dropped below 70 million in 2018 for the first time in 15 years. If that’s not enough to make Commissioner Rob Manfred and his owner bosses stand up and pay attention, what will?

Money talks, of course.

Perhaps when gate, TV and merchandise revenues start to dip, the powers-that-be will take some significant steps to create more action during a nine-inning game.

Broadcaster Bob Costas, whose first sporting love is baseball, said in a recent New Yorker interview that “baseball’s supposed to have a pleasing, leisurely pace. It’s not supposed to have a lethargic pace, and that’s what Manfred and company and the Players Association, if they’re enlightened about it, have to grapple with.”

Preventing scoring is becoming the way to win in all sports. Defence wins in the NFL. Coaches in the NHL use neutral-zone traps to stifle an opponent’s offensive efforts. In baseball, overpowering pitching and defensive shifts are taking over. Boring is winning out. Fans are zoning out.

Big changes are needed, or what used to be the national pastime will become more like naptime.

Vanessa Kirkpatrick Sports Contributor The weekend of Mar. 8 the Carlyle Novice 1 team travelled to Weyburn for their final tournament of the winter season.

The boys started the tournament Friday afternoon playing Weyburn Red Wings winning 4-10 and Knox Valentine winning the Heart and Hustle award.

Saturday was an early start to the day playing Moosomin Rangers

White winning 13-2 and Mason Hunt getting the Heart and Hustle award.

Saturday afternoon the boys played their second game of the day playing Moosomin Rangers Red, winning 10-0 and Rylan Levesque earned the Heart and Hustle award.

For their final game of the day they played Moosomin Rangers Blue and came out on top, 14-1 and Terran East earned the Heart and Hustle award.

Sunday they played

in the A Final against Weyburn Red Wings, winning 8-1 and earning themselves 1st place in the tournament. Hayden Puskas earned himself the final Heart and Hustle award of the weekend.

The boys had a great weekend and lots of fun making many memories.

Come cheer them at the Carlyle Sports Arena on Thursday night, Mar. 14 at 6:15 p.m. when they will be playing Estevan 2 in the second round of playoffs.

Report from the Legislature

Dan D’Autremont, MLA for Cannington The Saskatchewan Legislature is back in session.

We are on track to deliver a balanced budget and committed to keep standing up for Saskatchewan, defending jobs and families across our great province.

The economic outlook for Saskatchewan is strong. Jobs are up, unemployment is down and exports are expected to increase. Saskatchewan’s GDP growth is expected to be higher than the national average, and the highest in the prairies. The Conference Board of Canada believes our agriculture, oil, and potash sectors will drive this growth.

Saskatchewan is also the most attractive place in Canada for mining investment according to the

Fraser Institute’s Annual Survey of Mining Companies. The survey found that Saskatchewan is the world’s 3rd most attractive jurisdiction for mining investment and has moved into the top spot in terms of government policy.

We’re going to keep working to ensure our world class mining sector creates even more opportunity for generations to come.

Right now, much of Saskatchewan’s growth and opportunity is at risk with a forced federal carbon tax, Bill C-69, and a lack of market access for our export products. Bill C-69, for example, will not accomplish its stated goals of streamlining or efficiency in getting resource projects built. It will only add uncertainty and further delays.

Murder Mystery at Harrison House Bed & Breakfast Submitted by Edel Cowan Story Synopsis: ‘Tis the season for Drew Beasley to host the annual bash at the Harrison House. Excitement is hanging thickly in the air, as the VIPs of Pandora City gear up to mingle with friends, colleagues and of course – unavoidable foes. Drew Beasley, the CFO of the Harrison House, firmly believes that building community spirit around the Harrison House is the only way to keep the historical bed & breakfast alive. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the townspeople of Pandora City to remain harmonious in the same place for too long of a time. Drew and the staff of the Harrison House have taken extreme measures this year to divert the guests’ attention away from each other and toward the party’s festivities.

They have planned a delectable menu, fun party games and of course, spirited music for the guests to enjoy. This might be their last shot at hosting a successful shindig, as the heir to the Harrison estate is growing tired of the way the Harrison House is managed. Hopefully, the staff can prove that the annual bash is a necessity for the Harrison House’s ultimate success. Without the yearly buzz as a reminder, the townspeople could forget about the Harrison House even though it has been in Pandora City for over 100 years.

Saturday, March 9, 2019: Occurrences taking place: As the guests made their arrival at the “Harrison House Bed & Breakfast” they were instructed to choose a character from the cast list, find a table and take time to read and study their character. A very delicious roast beef supper, managed by members the Prairie Pride Credit Union, was then enjoyed by the 150 guests in attendance. When things were cleared away

Round 1 began – this was where the characters did their questioning and mingling “to get to know you”. When a reasonable amount of time had elapsed it was time for Round 2 – The Balloon Stomp Game – and the Purple team won. Then three “shots” were heard and the murder had occurred. The victim was character Tracy Howe which was

played by Chelsy Minshull. A few minutes were given to CSI of trying to figure out the fingerprint report and where everyone was at the time of the murder. It was now Round 3 for Confessions to be made by the main characters to reveal that the murderer was character Bronte Vance which was played by Quince Boutin. It was a great fun evening.

to be broken is political will and pride in the resource sector that Canada is known for.

While we await a decision on our government’s court challenge of the federal carbon tax, the Trudeau government will be forcing the tax on Saskatchewan.

The federal government should stop its forced carbon tax until the courts have had their say but they won’t. Starting April 1, the cost of the federal carbon tax is going to make it more expensive to gas up our vehicles, heat our homes and keep the lights on.

This is unfortunate for families and businesses across our province. SaskPower worked hard to ensure there would be no rate increase this year, and our government is currently reviewing a request by SaskEnergy to reduce natural gas commodity rates to their lowest level in 20 years, effective April 1.

These savings would be wiped out by the Trudeau carbon tax.

Our government has been clear from the start: our made-in-Saskatchewan plan will achieve real emissions reductions, while the Trudeau carbon tax, with its multi-year increases, will only impose costs on families with virtually no impact on emissions.

Meanwhile, the NDP continues to demonstrate how truly out of touch they are with the people of our province. On February 12, the Leader of the Opposition said “our position is very clear…we think that a price on pollution is a reasonable thing.”

This is a change in terminology for the NDP who are now shifting their language on a carbon tax to “a price on pollution”, just like Prime Minister Trudeau has.

The NDP is standing with Prime Minister Trudeau in support of a carbon tax that would be a hit to Saskatchewan jobs and a $16 billion hit to our GDP. This is clearly out of touch with Saskatchewan and its residents.

Our government will continue to stand up for Saskatchewan and stand up against the Trudeau carbon tax. We will continue voicing Saskatchewan’s concerns with this and other federal headwinds that would cause harm to our economic interests.

The five children, along with some spouses, some grandchildren (of the late Denis Lemieux) and several other family members attended induction ceremonies at Bemidji, Minnesota recently. Denis attended Bemidji State College in the 1970s. In 2008 he was post-humously inducted into the Bemidji University Hall of Fame. He was one of the 50 great hockey players of the last 50 years. He was also named most valuable players for three years in a row. His children are, Nicole Currie, Daniele Bourhis ,Collin Lemieux, Clarke Lemieux and Ashley Rutten.

Several residents travelled to Brandon last week to enjoy the Men’s Curling. Garry Dickson and Keith Olson were in Brandon where they enjoyed some curling and visited with Keith’s brother-in-law , Fred Steele from Kelowna, BC. Fred was there on behalf of the Ambrosia Fruit Growers who were one of the sponsors of the event.

Sympathy to the Lamontagne families on the passing of Brenda(Mederick’s wife) of Oxbow. She passed away on Feb. 28 at Lake Havasu, AZ at the age of 60 years.

Mary Pleckham is now a resident of Moose Mountain Lodge in Carlyle.

Congratulations to This ’N That Treasures (Thrift Store) on their 20th anniversary on Feb. 3.

Coffee and cookies were served on Mar. 5. In 1997 Meredith Swanson visited the Thrift Store in Rocanville and had the insight that Wawota would benefit from such a store. With the 4 churches joining together and the town offering the former bank building free the store was opened. In 2004 the store was moved to the former Health Care Foundation Building. this has truly been a success story. After paying expenses the profits are divided between the

churches. It is a win-win situation... a place to donate used or new items we don’t use and a place to purchase something we might use! Donations have been sent to Soul’s Harbour, Carmichael Outreach, Community Living and Women’s shelters.

Sympathy to Dee Brickley and other family members and friends of the late Marie Krauss of Kenosee Lake. Marie was involved in a tragic accident on Mar. 2 and passed away at the age of 69 years. Her funeral service was held in Assiniboia on Mar. 13.

Todd and Lesley Wilson have returned home from a 10-day holiday to Germany. While there February 22nd-March 4th they toured Munich, Nuremburg and Garmish-Partenkirchen, and Hilter’s rally grounds at Dachau concentration camp. They also visited Zugspetze, Germany’s highest mountain, did some sledging in the Alps and attended a couple of hockey games as Lesley’s cousin, Keith Aulie plays hockey for the Munich Red Bulls.

They also travelled to Feldkirch where Kelly Greenbank played hockey for a number of years. Then on to Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart and Hohensalzburg Fortress one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. Some of the travelling was with Lesley’s aunt and uncle and some of their friends.

Farmers reliant on Mother Nature

By Calvin Daniels Recently I had an opportunity to sit down over an early morning coffee with Jordan and Jennifer Lindgren who farm in the Norquay area.

Their name may be familiar to some since the couple were finalists for the Saskatchewan Outstanding Young Farmers Award for 2018 ending up with the top placing presented at the Farm Progress Show held in Regina last June.

As such awards often do, it has brought opportunities to the couple, including a chance to spend a couple of weeks in Australia earlier this year where they gave a short series, there were three stops on the itinerary, talking to farmers there about their operation.

At first it might seem that a farm couple from Norquay, SK. would have limited insights into agriculture which would transfer to a farmer in Australia, but the Lindgrens were quick to point out there

are far more similarities than you might expect.

The first is rather obvious once they mentioned it over that coffee, and it is how farmers, no matter where they are, are ultimately reliant on Mother Nature.

It did surprise the Lindgrens that there are areas of Australia where frost is a threat to crops, much as it can be here.

And, in some areas ‘down under’ canola is planted through what is essentially their winter season, so heat units are lower, and that extends the growing season, making that frost concern more dire.

Less of a surprise was the impact of heat in Australia. Large chunks of the country are arid, to the point they talked about one area where land is left idle for 18 months just to recharge the groundwater allowing farmers to then plant and harvest at least some crop based on in-soil moisture.

In another area harvest can be shut down because the temperature soars to 40 degrees Celsius,

so there is a ban on operations for fear of starting fires.

But the similarities go beyond keeping one eye on the sky, and tuning into the weather forecast daily.

The Lindgrens note much as here, farmers in Australia face issues when it comes to find workers, with a minimum wage they noted at $20/hour, and competition from the mining sector.

Increasingly, work on a farm is a high tech job, needing workers with skills that go well beyond the ability to drive a tractor. That is a situation which is not isolated to a single country or region.

While on the larger scale countries compete for markets when it comes to exporting farm production, at the farm level there is no doubt much producers can share in terms of information which cuts across international borders.

That commonality is something that producers should not forget.

CTSS have training in Carlyle Submitted On Thursday March 7th, multiple members of the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) were in Carlyle for some training. This included RCMP members from Broadview, Ft. Qu’ Appelle, Estevan, Weyburn and Carlyle.

Around the lunch hour CTSS members took advantage of being in the same area and went around town to do a blitz on traffic enforcement, particularly around the school zone in response to community requests complaining of erratic driving near the schools.

Several tickets and warnings were issued for

various moving violations and equipment regulations.

There were also 3 drug recognition experts working who can conduct field sobriety testing by directing an individual to perform a number of psycho-motor tests and measure involuntary responses to certain visual stimuli. It was also an opportunity for one of the traffic members who has been trained to operate and was carrying the new “DRAEGER 5000” oral swab drug recognition equipment an approve device under the Criminal Code for detecting impairment by drug.

Under the new cannabis laws, if charged for operating a conveyance (motor vehicle) with a THC

level from 2 nanograms but less than 5 nanograms per ml of blood is a straight summary offence. if charged for operating a conveyance (motor vehicle) with a THC level of 5 nanograms per ml of blood or more will be a hybrid offence. It is a criminal offence to refuse the demand made by a peace officer to provide a sample.

Two vehicles were stopped over the lunch hour and submitted oral samples, one driver passed, the other did not. The driver who failed was arrested and is now under investigation for drug impaired driving. The driver was later released and no charges have been laid yet as the matter is still under investigation.

25th annual K of C snowmobile derby Submitted by Ray Boutin The Moose Mountain Knights Of Columbus 25th annual Poker Derby was held Sunday, March 10 & hosted at Richard and Michael Weber’s family farm approximately 6 miles west of Carlyle.

This has become a local tradition and once again made a great family outing and gathering of friends.

As well as a great opportunity for fellowship, it fundraises for projects that we undertake like maintaining the Kenosee Boy’s and Girl’s Camp through funds and numerous volunteer hours, local food bank donations, other community donations and the last few years a Continuing Care Aid Scholarship for a student at Southeast College.

Upon reviewing our archives we see that it was actually our 26th year but since the 25th wasn’t celebrated last year we marked it this year.

We are thankful to all our prize sponsors and longtime participants and silent hand buyers.

National Youth Engagement Week at RCMP Depot Submitted by Staff Sgt. Darren Simons Thirty-two Students from across Canada (four from Saskatchewan) were chosen to attend the RCMP Training Academy (Depot) from March 25th to the 29th. These students were selected on their academic achievement, community engagement, and their interest in policing.

These students will interact with police officers from various units of the RCMP. Activities will include visits to police training classes, drill classes, police driver’s training classes, firearms simulators, tours of Depot and the RCMP Heritage Centre and much more.

This is a great experience and I am proud to announce that our Detachment area had two individuals selected to participate. Mykel BIERMANN from Manor and Tucker SHARP from Carlyle were se-
